Abstract
SETTING Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may impact tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis, clinical presentation and treatment outcomes in children as the signs and symptoms of both diseases overlap. OBJECTIVE To compare the sociodemographic and clinical profiles of childhood TB according to HIV status in Brazil. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of data on subjects aged <15 years retrieved from the Brazilian National Electronic Disease Registry (Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação) database on TB to compare TB-HIV coinfected patients and patients with TB only registered between 2007 and 2011. A hierarchical logistic regression model was applied. RESULTS Of 6091 cases analysed, 780 (12%) were TB-HIV patients, while 5311 (87%) presented with TB only. TB-HIV patients were more likely to be institutionalised (OR 2.22, 95%CI 1.43-3.46), to present with relapsed TB (OR 5.03, 95%CI 2.02-12.5) and be readmitted after treatment default (OR 16.7, 95%CI 4.34-64.46). They were also more likely to have unfavourable outcomes, including default (OR 2.85, 95%CI 1.81-4.49), death due to TB (OR 2.76, 95%CI 1.27-6.03) and death from other causes (OR 5.59, 95%CI 2.63-11.8). CONCLUSION Our study highlights the challenges of using national registers for research into childhood TB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insulin resistance is considered one of the major risk factors for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thus, early identification, preferably by using simple and inexpensive diagnostic tools, is essential for preventing T2DM. Triglyceride (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (TG/HDL-C) has been proposed as an inexpensive tool to identify individuals at high risk of T2DM. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between insulin resistance and TG/HDL-C in indigenous Argentinean children. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 501 (243 boys) indigenous school children aged 10.0 ± 2.4 yr were assessed for anthropometry, lipids, glucose, and insulin levels from November 2011 to November 2013. Insulin resistance was defined as the upper third quartile of homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). RESULTS The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 11.4% per Centers for Disease Control. Mean levels of various characteristics were: body mass index (BMI) 17.2 ± 2.6, HDL-C 39 ± 9 mg/dL, TGs 121 ± 58 mg/dL, TG/HDL-C 2.9 ± 1.8, glucose 77 ± 8 mg/dL, HOMA-IR 1.0 ± 0.8, and insulin 44 ± 9 mUI/L. Children in the higher quartiles of TG/HDL-C had significantly higher HOMA-IR values than children in the lower quartiles. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that TG/HDL-C was significantly associated with HOMA-IR (r² = 0.19) adjusted for age, gender, and BMI. Furthermore, for a 1-unit increase in log TG/HDL-C, the odds of being insulin resistant (HOMA-IR>III quartile) increased by 2.58 times [odds ratio (OR), 2.58 (1.63-4.05); p < 0.01], adjusted for age, gender, and BMI. CONCLUSION This study suggests that TG/HDL-C may be a good marker to identify insulin resistant indigenous Argentinean children.

Abstract
The ecology of seed dispersal is critical to understand the patterns of distribution and abundance of plant species. We investigated seed dispersal aspects associated with the high abundance of Buchenavia tomentosa in the Serra Azul State Park (PESA). We estimated fruit production and conducted fruit removal experiments. We carried out diurnal and nocturnal observations on frugivory as well as germination tests. Fruiting occurred in the dry season and totaled 1,365,015 ± 762,670 fruits.ha-1. B. tomentosa fruits were utilized by eight animal species. The lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) was considered the main seed disperser. Leafcutter ants (Atta laevigata and Atta sexdens) participated in the seed cleaning and occasionally dispersed seeds. The beetle Amblycerus insuturatus, blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) and red-and-green macaw (Ara chloropterus) were considered pre-dispersal seed predators. The seeds manually cleaned presented higher germination rate (100%) and speed index (4.2 seeds.d-1) than that of seeds with pulp. Germination of seeds found in tapirs'feces was 40%, while for the seeds without pulp it was 25%. The high abundance of B. tomentosa in the cerrado of PESA may be due to massive fruit production, low rates of seed predation, and efficient seed dispersal by tapirs, occurring before the rains which promote germination and recruitment of this species.
