Polytene chromosomes of Simulium arakawae, a pest species in the Simulium venustum group (Diptera: Simuliidae) from Japan

The chromosomal relationships of Simulium arakawae, a black fly of medical-veterinary importance, are resolved relative to other members of the Simulium venustum species group and to the standard reference map for the subgenus Simulium. Simulium arakawae differs from the subgeneric standard by eight fixed inversions, apparently none of which are shared with any of the other 17 chromosomally studied nominal members of the group. The chromosomal features that indicate group membership might have been lost in S. arakawae, particularly if they were polymorphic in an ancestor.

Infections caused by Gordonia species at a medical centre in Taiwan, 1997 to 2008

The inability of conventional identification systems to accurately identify Gordonia spp. often results in the misdiagnosis of infections by these rare pathogens, which require genomic sequencing for precise identification. In the present study, we describe nine cases of the various types of infection caused by Gordonia spp. From 1997 to 2008, 66 isolates (from 30 patients) initially identified as Rhodoccus spp. by conventional biochemical methods, by the Bacteriology Laboratory of National Taiwan University Hospital, were retrospectively analysed to assess the accuracy of species identification. Fifteen of these isolates (from nine patients) were later found to be Gordonia spp. by two molecular methods: PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism for heat shock protein gene (hsp65) and the 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. Gordonia sputi (n = 8) was the most common species, followed by Gordonia terrae (n = 7). Most of the isolates were isolated from blood (n = 11), followed by soft tissue (n = 2) and eye (n = 2). Five patients presented with bacteraemia and two of these had catheter-related bloodstream infection. Two patients had soft tissue infections and another two patients had infective keratitis and conjunctivitis. The random amplified polymorphic DNA patterns for isolates from different patients were different, indicating that they were genetically unrelated. Accurate identification with molecular methods is required if the role of Gordonia spp. in causing infection is to be recognized.

Clinical significance of nontuberculous mycobacteria isolates in elderly Taiwanese patients

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) isolates in elderly Taiwanese patients. From 2004 through 2008, patients >65 years old with NTM isolation were identified. The definitions of NTM disease followed the American Thoracic Society and Infectious Disease Society of America (ATS/IDSA) criteria. Among the 3,175 NTM isolates, Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC; n = 1,118, 35.2%) was the most prevalent species, followed by M. abscessus (n = 545, 17.2%). Among the 1,633 elderly patients with NTM isolates, the most prevalent NTM species were MAC (n = 592, 36.3%) and M. fortuitum complex (n = 311, 19.0%). NTM colonization was found in 1,339 (80.4%) patients and only 326 (19.6%) patients had NTM diseases. During the study period, the annual incidence rates (per 100,000 inpatients and outpatients) of NTM colonization and disease both increased significantly (p < 0.0001) from 10.5 to 15.8 and from 2.1 to 4.3, respectively. Isolated pulmonary NTM infections compromised 294 (90.2%) of the 326 elderly cases of NTM disease. In conclusion, this study found an increasing trend in the incidence of both NTM isolates and NTM diseases among elderly Taiwanese patients. MAC and M. abscessus were the most frequent species causing various types of NTM disease.

Diagnostic performance of an enzyme-linked immunospot assay for interferon-gamma in extrapulmonary tuberculosis varies between different sites of disease

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate diagnostic performance of an enzyme-linked immunospot assay for interferon-gamma (T SPOT-TB) in patients with suspected extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB).

METHODS

From January 2007 to December 2008, patients with suspected extrapulmonary TB were prospectively enrolled from 2 tertiary care hospitals.

RESULTS

A total of 138 patients with suspected extrapulmonary TB were enrolled; 50 patients had positive culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and 39 patients had probable TB. The sites of infection were lymph node (n = 20), pleura (n = 19), bone/joint (n = 15), urinary tract (n = 7), peritoneum (n = 7), meninges (n = 6), disseminated (n = 5), intestine (n = 3), pericardium (n = 2), skin (n = 2), throat (n = 1), neck (n = 1), and genitalia (n = 1). The overall sensitivity and specificity were 79.8% (71/89) and 81.6% (40/49). The sensitivity ranged from 100% for tuberculous meningitis, tuberculous pericarditis, and intestinal TB, 95% for lymphadenitis, to 42.9% for tuberculous peritonitis. The sensitivity of the T SPOT-TB assay was 70.6% in immunocompromised patients and 85.5% in immunocompetent patients (p = 0.09).

CONCLUSIONS

The T SPOT-TB assay can be a useful tool for diagnosing extra-pulmonary TB in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients, particularly for tuberculous meningitis, pericarditis, lymphadenitis, and intestinal TB.

Supraclavicular lymph node metastases in cervical cancer

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION

To evaluate the outcome and prognostic factors of patients with supraclavicular lymph node (SCLN) involvement at primary diagnosis.

METHODS

We reviewed the medical records of cervical cancer patients primarily treated at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between 1987 and 2005. Thirty-three patients with histologically confirmed SCLN metastasis at primary diagnosis were eligible for analysis. Clinical and pathological features were analyzed for association with outcome.

RESULTS

The 3- and 5-year survival rates of patients with SCLN metastasis were 16.5% and 16.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed the serum level of squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag) < 15 ng/ml at initial diagnosis (p = 0.021) and staging/restaging including [18F] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) (p = 0.006) to be associated with a better prognosis.

CONCLUSION

Primary SCLN metastasis in cervical cancer is not incurable. The benefit from PET findings might help in selecting appropriate patients for curative primary and/or salvage treatment.

Congenital lumbosacral limb duplication: a case report

We report a case of congenital lumbosacral limb duplication at the pelvis, lower limb, and foot of a 4-year-old boy. The patient presented with a supernumerary lower limb joined at the lumbosacral region by a bony connection. A pseudo-navel and a pseudo-penis were found on the supernumerary limb and foot duplication was noted at the end. Radiography and a 3-dimensional computed-tomography reconstruction revealed duplication of an inversely oriented pelvis dorsal to the normal pelvis, semi-vertebrae in T7 to T9, thoracolumbar scoliosis, lumbosacral vertebral dysplasia, and dislocation of the left hip. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a tethered spinal cord and an adipoma in the sacral canal. Motor conduction velocity was reduced in the left peroneal nerve. Surgery to remove the supernumerary limb was successfully performed. The patient recovered well and further surgery is planned for functional reconstruction of the left lower limb.

Immunohistochemical diagnosis of mouse hepatitis virus and mycoplasma pulmonis infection with murine antiserum

This study established a modified alkaline phosphatase-labelled avidin-biotin-complex (ABC-AP) method for diagnosis of mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) and Mycoplasma pulmonis infection from formalin-fixed, paraffin wax-embedded sections, murine antibody-positive serum being used as the primary reagent. With this method, MHV antigen in cAnNCrj.Cg-Foxn1(nu)/Foxn1(nu) mice and M. pulmonis antigen in Wistar rats were immunolabelled in tissue sections. MHV antigen was clearly detected in samples of liver, stomach, caecal and colonic mucosa, and spleen. M. pulmonis antigen was demonstrated on the luminal surface of bronchiolar epithelial cells. This method may prove useful in diagnosis when commercial antisera are unavailable or when immunosuppression prevents serological diagnosis.

Sensitization of a tumor, but not normal tissue, to the cytotoxic effect of ionizing radiation using Panax notoginseng extract

The aim of the present study was to investigate any sensitization effect of the Panax notoginseng extract (PNE) and the purified Saponin (Rb1) on the radiation response of an experimental tumor (KHT sarcoma) in mice, in comparison with any effects on a normal tissue (bone marrow). PNE at a concentration of 0.1-100 mg/kg produced an increase in tumor radiosensitivity. The sensitization effect was maximal at 10 mg/kg and at 30 minutes after injection. Higher doses were toxic to the bone marrow stem cells. Similarly Rb1 at a concentration 0.001 to 1 mg/kg also produced an increase in tumor radiosensitivity, with maximum effect at 1 mg/kg. Higher doses were not toxic to the bone marrow stem cells in this case. Radiosensitization factors were calculated as ratios of D0 (the radiosensitivity parameter), and these were highly significant for the tumor and very similar for both compounds at the doses used, namely 1.18-1.19. There was no significant effect for bone marrow stem cells (sensitization factors of 0.99 +/- 0.01 for both compounds). The differential effect on tumor, and the magnitude of the radiosensitization, suggest that further purified or synthetic versions of this extract may be useful not only in vascular-related diseases but also in cancer therapy.

Hemodynamic effects of a combination of octreotide and terlipressin in patients with viral hepatitis related cirrhosis

BACKGROUND

Terlipressin or octreotide given alone has been used as the first-line pharmacological treatment for acute variceal bleeding. In portal hypertensive animals, pre-infusion of octreotide followed by the addition of terlipressin has an additive or complementary effect on splanchnic hemodynamics. The current study was aimed at evaluating such a combination treatment in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension.

METHODS

Patients were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo (n = 11) or an intravenous infusion of octreotide 100 microg/h after an initial bolus of 100 microg (n = 13). Thereafter, each patient received an intravenous injection of terlipressin 2 mg. Hemodynamic values were measured basally, 30 min after octreotide or placebo, and 60 min after terlipressin.

RESULTS

Placebo administration did not affect any of the hemodynamic values. Terlipressin administration resulted in expected changes in hepatic venous pressure gradient, hepatic blood flow and systemic hemodynamics. In contrast, octreotide administration significantly decreased hepatic blood flow but did not affect other hemodynamic values. After terlipressin administration, significant hemodynamic changes were observed that were similar to the hemodynamic changes with terlipressin alone. The magnitude of changes in hepatic venous pressure gradient, cardiac index and systemic vascular resistance were no different between the two groups of patients. The heart rate was significantly lower in patients receiving octreotide plus terlipressin than those receiving terlipressin alone.

CONCLUSION

The current study showed that a combination of octreotide and terlipressin did not exert an additive effect in reducing hepatic venous pressure gradient in patients with cirrhosis. In addition, the systemic hemodynamic changes were comparable between the two groups.

Tele-emergency medicine: the evaluation of Taipei Veterans General Hospital and Kinmen-Granite Hospital in Taiwan

BACKGROUND

The purpose of the project was to establish computer networks between selected hospitals through high-speed communication and high power computer processing to electronically exchange medical information and to conduct clinical examination and consultation. Quality medical services can thus be provided to patients in the remote rural areas such as villages and small towns in the mountains, on the coasts and islets away from Taiwan. It also intended to facilitate continuing education for doctors in those areas. This study evaluates telemedicine between Taipei-Veterans General Hospital and Kinmen-Granite Hospital.

METHODS

Patients were chosen from 1996-7 to 1997-6. The evaluation criteria included consulting quality, satisfaction of the doctors, benefits for the patients, and the charge being rendered.

RESULTS

The results of evaluation for telemedicine between Taipei-Veterans General Hospital (VGHTPE) and Kinmen-Granite hospital (GH) are as follows: 93.0% doctors used telemedicine to seek a second opinion. After teleconsultation, the ratio of the patients showing cooperation was over 80%. Over 98% doctors thought telemedicine system helpful. The doctors in VGHTPE are more satisfied with the facility than local doctors in Kinmen.

CONCLUSIONS

The clinical evaluation of the telemedicine showed positive results. It can be a useful tool to facilitate on-job training and education Tele-emergency medicine.

Adaptive vasodilatory response after octreotide treatment

Despite the suppression of glucagon release, an adaptive response aimed at maintaining vasodilatation after octreotide treatment may exist in portal hypertension. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the possible interaction between endothelium and non-endothelium-derived vasodilators after 1-wk octreotide administration in cirrhotic rats. Rats were allocated to receive either vehicle or octreotide (30 or 100 microg/kg every 12 h subcutaneously). Hemodynamic values, plasma glucagon levels, endothelium-related vasodilatory activities, and aortic endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression were determined after treatment. Octreotide administration decreased plasma glucagon and increased serum 6-keto-PGF(1 alpha) and NOx levels without affecting the hemodynamic values. In cirrhotic rats receiving octreotide, there was a blunt response to either L-NAME or indomethacin administration alone, but this blunt pressor response disappeared after simultaneous administration of the two drugs. Additionally, an increased aortic eNOS expression was observed in cirrhotic rats receiving 1-wk octreotide. It is concluded that 1-wk octreotide treatment did not correct the hemodynamic derangement in cirrhotic rats. The enhanced endothelium-related vasodilatory activity was noted after octreotide treatment that overcame the octreotide-induced hemodynamic effects in portal hypertension.

Hemodynamic effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza on cirrhotic rats

Salvia miltiorrhiza (Sm) administration has been shown to reduce hepatic fibrosis in rats. We investigated the hemodynamic effects of Sm on bile duct ligated (BDL) rats. Hemodynamic, histological, and vascular contractile studies were conducted in rats 4 weeks after bile duct ligation. An aqueous extract of Sm (0.2 g twice per day) or vehicle was administered for 4 weeks to BDL rats. Sm treatment in BDL rats significantly reduced histological grades of fibrosis and ameliorated the portal hypertensive state (including portal venous pressure, superior mesenteric artery blood flow, cardiac index, and total peripheral resistance) as compared with vehicle treatment. Moreover, Sm treatment enhanced the vascular sensitivity of mesenteric arteries to phenylephrine in BDL rats. Sm treatment had no effect on plasma biochemical profiles of either BDL or normal rats. Our results suggest that 4-week Sm treatment ameliorates the portal hypertensive state in BDL rats.

TT virus infection in screened Taiwanese blood donors

OBJECTIVE

TT virus (TTV) is a newly discovered human DNA virus of uncertain clinical significance. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of TTV infection among blood donors in Taiwan.

METHODS

Viral DNA was studied in 224 healthy blood donors and 118 deferred donors. DNA was extracted from plasma and amplified by seminested polymerase chain reaction with reported primer sets from a conserved region of the TTV genome.

RESULTS

The prevalence of TTV DNA in the deferred donors was 24.6%, significantly higher than in the healthy donors (11.9%). TTV was also more prevalent in those with hepatitis B surface antigen than in those without it (p = 0.002).

CONCLUSION

In comparing normal with deferred Taiwanese blood donors, hepatitis B virus infection is linked to a higher prevalence of TTV infection.

Backbone dynamics of Escherichia coli thioesterase/protease I: evidence of a flexible active-site environment for a serine protease

Escherichia coli thioesterase/protease I (TEP-I) is a member of a novel subclass of the lipolytic enzymes with a distinctive GDSLS motif. In addition to possessing thioesterase and protease activities, TEP-I also exhibits arylesterase activity. We have determined the (15)N nuclear magnetic spin relaxation rates, R(1) and R(2), and the steady state (1)H-(15)N heteronuclear Overhauser effect, measured at both 11.74 T and 14.09 T, of (u-(15)N) TEP-I. These data were analyzed using model-free formalism (with axially symmetric rotational diffusion anisotropy) to extract the backbone dynamics of TEP-I. The results reveal that the core structure of the central beta-sheet and the long alpha-helices are rigid, while the binding pocket appears to be rather flexible. The rigid core serves as a scaffold to anchor the essential loops, which form the binding pocket. The most flexible residues display large amplitude fast (ps/ns time-scale) motion and lie on one stripe whose orientation is presumed to be the ligand-binding orientation. We also detected the presence of several residues displaying slow (microseconds/ms time-scale) conformational exchanging processes. These residues lie around the binding pocket and are oriented perpendicularly to the orientation of the flexible stripe. Two of the putative catalytic triads, Ser10 and His157, and their neighbors show motion on the microseconds/ms time-scale, suggesting that their slow motion may have a role in catalysis, in addition to their possible roles in ligand binding. The presence of a flexible substrate-binding pocket may also facilitate binding to a wide range of substrates and confer the versatile functional property of this protein.

Vascular release of nonheme iron in perfused rabbit lungs

In this study, we hypothesized that the lung actively releases excess iron into the circulation to regulate iron homeostasis. We measured nonheme iron (NHFe) in the perfusate of control isolated perfused rabbit lungs and lungs with ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) ventilated with normoxic (21% O(2)) or hypoxic (95% N(2)) gas mixtures. Some were perfused with bicarbonate-free (HEPES) buffer or treated with the anion exchange inhibitor DIDS. The control lungs released approximately 0.25 microg/ml of NHFe or 20% of the total lung NHFe into the vascular space that was not complexed with ferritin, transferrin, or lactoferrin or bleomycin reactive. The I/R lungs released a similar amount of NHFe during ischemia and some bleomycin-detectable iron during reperfusion. NHFe release was attenuated by approximately 50% in both control and ischemic lungs by hypoxia and by >90% in control lungs and approximately 60% in ischemic lungs by DIDS and HEPES. Reperfusion injury was not affected by DIDS or HEPES but was attenuated by hypoxia. These results indicate that biologically nonreactive nonheme iron is released rapidly by the lung into the vascular space via mechanisms that are linked to bicarbonate exchange. During prolonged ischemia, redox-active iron is also released into the vascular compartment by other mechanisms and may contribute to lung injury.

Vascular smooth muscle cell signaling in cirrhosis and portal hypertension

Abnormal vascular responsiveness to ligands has been frequently observed in cirrhosis and portal hypertension, but its existence is not proven. The signaling pathways in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) have been studied only in animal models of cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Emerging evidence suggests that active relaxation, expressed as augmented content or activity of effectors within the cyclic AMP signaling pathway and suppressed content or activity of effectors in the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate/1,2-diacylglycerol signaling pathway, may be occurring in VSMCs of the splanchnic circulation in portal hypertension. The evidence supporting the existence of this phenomenon in the VSMCs of extrasplanchnic circulations in portal hypertension, as well as in the splanchnic circulation when chronic cellular damage is present, is very limited. The status of the other signaling pathways associated with contractile functions of the VSMCs, viz., cyclic GMP and tyrosine kinase-linked pathways, is unknown. The status of all the signaling pathways in non-contractile functions of VSMCs, such as growth and remodeling, has not been studied. As our overall understanding on the signaling pathways in VSMCs is only emerging, it is premature to implicate altered activity of the signaling pathways as the underlying basis of vascular hyporesponsiveness in cirrhosis and portal hypertension, and to extrapolate these limited observations to the human condition.

Hemodynamic effects of synephrine treatment in portal hypertensive rats

Synephrine, a sympathomimetic alpha1-adrenoceptor agonist, has been shown to induce dose-dependent portal hypotensive effects after acute intravenous infusion. The present study was undertaken to investigate the hemodynamic effects of 8-day administration of synephrine in portal hypertensive rats. Portal hypertension was induced by either partial portal vein ligation (PVL) or bile duct ligation (BDL). Portal hypertensive rats were allocated into one of two groups: vehicle group (0.1 N HCl, 0.5 ml/12 h) or synephrine group (1 mg/kg per 12 h), with 7 rats in each group. Synephrine or vehicle was administered by gavage into PVL and BDL rats for 8 consecutive days. Systemic as well as splanchnic hemodynamic parameters were measured thereafter. Synephrine significantly ameliorated the hyperdynamic state in both PVL and BDL rats. The portal venous pressure in PVL and BDL rats (-13.5% and -10.1%, respectively), portal tributary blood flow (-19.5% and -20.4%) and cardiac index (-12.1% and -18.8%) were significantly reduced, while mean arterial pressure (10.4% and 23.4%) and systemic (26.3% and 51.0%) as well as portal territory (47.1% and 67.7%) vascular resistance were enhanced by treatment of synephrine as compared with vehicle treatment. Our results showed that eight-day administration of synephrine exerted beneficial hemodynamic effects in two models of portal hypertensive rats.

[Bone and joint revision surgery after limb salvage procedure of malignant bone tumor]

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the indications for revision surgery after limb salvage procedure of malignant bone tumor and summarize the experiences in revision surgery.

METHODS

From January 1994 to December 1997, 8 cases were re-operated after primary limb salvage procedure. The average survival period with no-tumor occurrence was 8 years. The common causes for the revision were traumatic osteoarthritis, fracture, and bone resorption. The main difficulties in revision were soft tissue contracture and limb discrepancy from limb shortening.

RESULTS

In this study, there was total hip replacement in 1 case, large segmental allograft for reconstruction of distal femur in 3 cases, total knee replacement upon composite of previously transplanted allograft in 3 cases, removing of intramedullary nail and re-internally fixed with intramedullary nail in 1 cases. The isotopic bone scan before the revision showed active bone metabolism in all 4 transplanted segmental allograft. The pathologic study of the transplanted allograft after revision confirmed new bone formation in allograft. The revision procedure reduced the pain, and improved the limb function.

CONCLUSION

The main causes of revision surgery after limb salvage procedure of malignant bone tumor are fracture of transplanted allograft segment or devitalized tumor segment, and poor function of the affected joint. Constrained knee prostheses with rotating hinges or semi-constrained ball-axis resurfacing knee prostheses improve the function of knee joint postoperatively.

Two-Dimensional Electric-Field Vector Measurement by a LiTaO(3) electro-optic probe tip

An electro-optic probe tip that is made from LiTaO crystal to make tangentially two-dimensional electric-field (E-field) vector measurements is presented. We combine a new electro-optic modulation technique and a conventional one to resolve the two E-field components. The new modulation effect on the optical probing beam is caused by rotation of the principal axis the electro-optic crystal, which is proportional to the E-field. Inasmuch as there is no free charge involved in the axis rotation, rotation modulation of the axis can be as fast as conventional modulation. The principles are carefully derived, and an experimental system constructed, to measure two-dimensional E-field vectors on a test pattern. The results are in good agreement with those obtained with commercial software for electromagnetic simulation. The sensitivities of two tangential E-field components are 76 (mV/cm)/ radicalHz and 0.8 (V/cm)/ radicalHz, respectively. The root-mean-square error of an E-field directional measurement is 1.5 degrees .

Upregulation of tyrosine kinase TKT by the Epstein-Barr virus transactivator Zta

The Zta protein is a key transactivator involved in initiating the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) lytic cascade. In addition to transactivating many viral genes, Zta has the capacity to influence host cellular signals by binding to promoter regions or by interacting with several important cellular factors. Based on the observation that tyrosine kinases play central roles in determining the fate of cells, a kinase display assay was used to investigate whether cells expressing Zta have an altered pattern of kinase expression. The assay revealed that TRK-related tyrosine kinase (TKT) is expressed at significant levels in Zta transfectants but not in control cells. Additional evidence was obtained from Northern and Western blotting. Importantly, the upregulation of phosphorylated TKT and TKT downstream effector matrix metalloproteinase 1 in Zta transfectants hinted that TKT might initiate a signaling cascade in Zta-expressing cells. In addition, deletion analysis of the Zta protein revealed that the transactivation and dimerization domains were both essential for the upregulation of TKT transcription. Moreover, correlation of expression levels of Zta and TKT transcripts in nasopharyngeal carcinoma biopsy specimens was clearly demonstrated by quantitative PCR (Q-PCR), which provides the first evidence for an effect of Zta on cellular gene expression in vivo. These findings offer insight into the virus-cell interactions and may help us elucidate the role of EBV in tumorigenesis.

[Longitudinal biomechanical effect on repair options of artery injury]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the relationship between the different defect length of vessels and the options of vascular repair, and to compare the different options of repair because of the longitudinal biomechanical effect.

METHODS

A clinical analysis was undertaken to evaluate the major arterial and venous injuries in human extremities repaired by end-to-end anastomoses or venous autograft(177 cases, 185 vessels). Compared the defect length of the same kind of vessels repaired by different options (Student-t test). Evaluated the defect length to repair arterial injuries between by end-to-end anastomoses and by vein graft by means of 95% confidence interval.

RESULTS

There was significant difference between the defect length of brachial artery repaired by end-to-end anastomosis and femoral artery and popliteal artery repaired by autogenous vein graft (P < 0.01). The upper limit of confidence interval in the defect length of brachial artery, femoral artery and popliteal artery was 3.17 cm, 2.81 cm and 2.44 cm respectively by end-to-end anastomosis by means of 95% confidence interval. The lower limit of confidence interval in the defect length of brachial artery, femoral artery and popliteal artery was 2.82 cm, 2.41 cm and 2.17 cm respectively by vein graft by means of 95% confidence interval. The defect length of brachial artery, femoral artery and popliteal artery repaired by vein graft was linear correlation with the length of graft.

CONCLUSION

Because of the longitudinal biomechanical difference of arteries and veins in human extremities, different options of repair are necessary to different arterial injuries.

Mink lung cells and mixed mink lung and A549 cells for rapid detection of influenza virus and other respiratory viruses

Mink lung cells were more sensitive than the commonly used MDCK or pRhMK cells for rapid detection of influenza virus A from clinical specimens. Mixed Mv1Lu and A549 cells in a single shell vial were synergistic for detection of influenza virus A and were as sensitive as individual cells for detection of other respiratory viruses.
