Chemotherapy combined with target drugs in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer: a meta-analysis based on Chinese patients

BACKGROUND

Colorectal carcinoma is one of most diagnosed solid malignant carcinoma. The chemotherapy combined with target drugs in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer in not conclusive.

METHODS

The clinical studies reporting the activity and adverse events between chemotherapy alone versus chemotherapy combined with anti-epidermal growth factor receptor drugs were screened in the databases of Medline, the Cochrane Library, Wanfang and CNKI and included in this meta-analysis. The risk ratio (RR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) for treatment response and adverse events were pooled by random or fixed effect model.

RESULTS

A total of 10 clinical studies reporting chemotherapy combined with the target in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer were included in this study. The pooled RR was 3.26 (95% CI: 1.74-6.11, P < 0.05), 1.49 (95% CI: 1.23-1.80) and 1.65 (95% CI: 1.37-1.98) for complete response (CR), partial response and objective response rate, respectively. For nausea and vomiting events, the RR was 1.62 (95% CI: 1.33-1.97, P < 0.05) indicating higher incidence of nausea and vomiting was observed in the combined group compared with chemotherapy alone. However, the diarrhea (RR = 1.10, 95% CI: 0.86-1.42, P > 0.05), liver function damage (RR = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.74-1.42), myelosuppression (RR = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.83-1.31) and neurotoxicity (RR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.93-1.35) were not different between the two groups.

CONCLUSION

For Chinese patients with advanced colorectal cancer, chemotherapy combined with target drug can improve the response rate, but also increase the risk of nausea and vomiting.

KLF4 mediates the link between TGF-β1-induced gene transcription and H3 acetylation in vascular smooth muscle cells

Transcriptional activation by transcription factors is coupled with histone acetylation and chromatin remodeling. However, the relationship between TGF-β1-induced gene transcription by Krüppel-like factor (KLF)-4 and histone acetylation remains unknown. In our study, KLF4 overexpression or knockdown, respectively increased or decreased H3 acetylation and p300 occupancy, which is concentrated in the region containing TGF-β1 control elements (TCEs) of the genes by TGF-β1 regulation during vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) differentiation. Coimmunoprecipitation and glutathione S-transferase pull-down assays showed that phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) formed a complex with KLF4 to inhibit the phosphorylation of the latter in basal conditions. After TGF-β1 signaling activation, PTEN was phosphorylated by p38 MAPK or PI3K/Akt signaling, phosphorylated PTEN lost its ability to dephosphorylate KLF4, and the cofactors interacting with KLF4 switched from PTEN to p300. Then, KLF4-p300 complexes were recruited to KLF4-binding sites of the gene promoter of VSMCs, to acetylate histone H3 and activate transcription. In addition, phosphorylated KLF4 enhanced p300 histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity via the p38 MAPK pathway, which may be responsible for H3 acetylation. Taken together, the results of our study reveal a novel mechanism whereby KLF4 mediates the link between TGF-β1-induced gene transcription activation and H3 acetylation during VSMC differentiation.

Impact of enteral nutrition on postoperative immune function and nutritional status

We studied the effects of enteral nutrition (EN) support initiated 1 week before surgery on postoperative nutritional status, immune function, and inflammatory response in gastric cancer patients. A total of 200 gastric cancer patients were randomly divided into two groups: EN starting 1 week before surgery (study group) and EN starting early after surgery (control group). The two groups received EN support, following different therapeutic schedules, until the 9th day after operation. In the patients, body weight, skinfold thickness, upper-arm circumference, white blood cell count, albumin, prealbumin, C-reactive protein, peripheral immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, and IgM), T lymphocyte subsets, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α were measured 10 days before and after surgery and on the first day after surgery. There was no statistically significant difference in the results of recovery time of passage of gas by anus, abdominal distension, stomachache, blood glucose, hepatic and renal functions, and electrolytes between the two groups of patients (P > 0. 05). Adverse reactions occurred to both groups at 1 and 2 days after operation. Such conditions was improved after the intravenous drip rate was adjusted. The albumin and prealbumin levels of the patients in both groups decreased at 1 day after operation (P < 0. 05). The levels rose when the research was finished (P < 0. 05). The prealbumin level of the study group was higher than that of the control group at 10 days after operation (P < 0. 05). The IgG level of the study group was higher than that of the control group at 10 days after operation (P < 0. 05). The two groups of inflammatory reaction indicators of the study group were lower than those of the control group at 10 days after operation (P < 0. 05). This study indicates that appropriate preoperative EN support for gastric cancer patients can improve their postoperative nutritional status and immune function, can reduce inflammatory response, and is more conducive to the recovery of patients.

Chinese medicine Tongxinluo reduces atherosclerotic lesion by attenuating oxidative stress and inflammation in microvascular endothelial cells

Oxidative stress and inflammation are the important pathological basis of atherogenesis. So, attenuating oxidative stress and inflammation has a very important significance in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. The aim of present study was to investigate whether anti-atherosclerotic effect of Tongxinluo (TXL), a compound traditional Chinese medicine, is related to its anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation in human cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (HCMEC). We found that TXL treatment significantly reduced serum lipid levels and atherosclerotic plaque formation of apoE-deficient mice, and improved endothelial cell function as evidenced by increased expression of CD31 and eNOS. TXL pretreatment could abrogate the up-regulation of ROS and MDA induced by C16. Further experiments showed that the anti-oxidative effect of TXL may be related to inhibiting the expression of p22(phox), p47(phox) and HO-1 in HCMECs. We also found that TXL could inhibit the release of IL-1β and TNFα induced by C16, which is mediated by inhibiting the expression and activation of NF-κB. In conclusion, TXL decreases atherosclerotic plaque formation and improves endothelial cell function by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation in HCMECs. This finding provides a new molecular mechanism for the anti-atherosclerotic effect of TXL.

Astrocytic Cx 43 and Cx 40 in the mouse hippocampus during and after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus

Astrocytes have now been well accepted to play important roles in epileptogenesis by controlling gliotransmitter release and neuronal excitability, contributing to blood-brain barrier dysfunction and involving in brain inflammation. Recent studies indicate that abnormal expression of gap junction protein connexin (Cx) may also be a contributing factor for seizure generation. To further address this issue, we investigated the progressive changes of Cx 43 and Cx 40 in the mouse hippocampus at 4 h, 1 day, 1 week and 2 months during and after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (PISE). The co-localization of Cx 43 and Cx 40 with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was also examined. We observed that Cx 43 and Cx 40 protein expression remained unaltered at 4 h during and at 1 day (acute stage) after PISE. However, their expression was significantly increased in CA1 and CA3 areas and in the dentate gyrus at 1 week (latent stage) and 2 months (chronic stage) after PISE. Double immunofluorescence labeling indicated the localization of Cx 43 and Cx 40 in astrocytes. Combined with progressive neuronal loss in the mouse hippocampus, our results suggest that the increase in gap junctions in the neuronoglial syncytium of reactive astrocytes may be implicated in synchronization of hippocampal hyperactivity leading to neuronal loss and epileptogenesis.

Biological evaluation and molecular docking of baicalin and scutellarin as Helicobacter pylori urease inhibitors

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Baicalin and scutellarin are the principal bioactive components of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi which has extensively been incorporated into heat-clearing and detoxification formulas for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori-related gastrointestinal disorders in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the mechanism of action remained to be defined.

AIM OF THE STUDY

To explore the inhibitory effect, kinetics and mechanism of Helicobacter pylori urease (the vital pathogenetic factor for Helicobacter pylori infection) inhibition by baicalin and scutellarin, for their therapeutic potential.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The ammonia formations, indicator of urease activity, were examined using modified spectrophotometric Berthelot (phenol-hypochlorite) method. The inhibitory effect of baicalin and scutellarin was characterized with IC50 values, compared to acetohydroxamic acid (AHA), a well known Helicobacter pylori urease inhibitor. Lineweaver-Burk and Dixon plots for the Helicobacter pylori urease inhibition of baicalin and scutellarin was constructed from the kinetic data. SH-blocking reagents and competitive active site Ni(2+) binding inhibitors were employed for mechanism study. Molecular docking technique was used to provide some information on binding conformations as well as confirm the inhibition mode. Moreover, cytotoxicity experiment using Gastric Epithelial Cells (GES-1) was evaluated.

RESULTS

Baicalin and scutellarin effectively suppressed Helicobacter pylori urease in dose-dependent and time-independent manner with IC50 of 0.82±0.07 mM and 0.47±0.04 mM, respectively, compared to AHA (IC50=0.14±0.05 mM). Structure-activity relationship disclosed 4'-hydroxyl gave flavones an advantage to binding with Helicobacter pylori urease. Kinetic analysis revealed that the types of inhibition were non-competitive and reversible with inhibition constant Ki of 0.14±0.01 mM and 0.18±0.02 mM for baicalin and scutellarin, respectively. The mechanism of urease inhibition was considered to be blockage of the SH groups of Helicobacter pylori urease, since thiol reagents (L,D-dithiothreitol, L-cysteine and glutathione) abolished the inhibitory action and competitive active site Ni(2+) binding inhibitors (boric acid and sodium fluoride) carried invalid effect. Molecular docking study further supported the structure-activity analysis and indicated that baicalin and scutellarin interacted with the key residues Cys321 located on the mobile flap through S-H·π interaction, but did not interact with active site Ni(2+). Moreover, Baicalin (at 0.59-1.05 mM concentrations) and scutellarin (at 0.23-0.71 mM concentrations) did not exhibit significant cytotoxicity to GES-1.

CONCLUSIONS

Baicalin and scutellarin were non-competitive inhibitors targeting sulfhydryl groups especially Cys321 around the active site of Helicobacter pylori urease, representing potential to be good candidate for future research as urease inhibitor for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection. Furthermore, our work gave additional scientific support to the use of Scutellaria baicalensis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat gastrointestinal disorders.

[Effect of kinetin on immunity and splenic lymphocyte proliferation in vitro in D-galactose-induced aging rats]

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of kinetin (Kn) on immunity and splenic lymphocyte proliferation in vitro of aging rats induced by D-galactose (D-gal). Fifty SD rats were randomly divided into five groups: control group, aging model group, Kn low dose group, Kn middle dose group and Kn high dose group. The aging model group was proposed by napes subcutaneous injection of D-gal (125 mg/kg) for 45 d, and anti-aging groups were intragastrically administered with 5, 10, 20 mg/kg of Kn respectively from day 11. IgG, IgA, IgM contents of serum, the apoptosis percentage, stimulation index (SI) and proliferation index (PI) of splenic lymphocyte in vitro were evaluated. The results showed that the apoptosis percentage of splenic lymphocyte in aging model rats was higher, the serum IgG, IgA and IgM contents, SI and PI were lower than control group. Kn significantly decreased the apoptosis percentage of splenic lymphocyte, while increased the serum IgG, IgA and IgM contents, SI and PI in aging model group. These results suggest that Kn could inhibit the apoptosis, while promote the proliferation of splenic lymphocyte, and then effectively enhance the immune power of the aging rats and slow down the aging process.

A compact two-way high-power microwave combiner

A compact 2-way high-power microwave (HPM) waveguide combiner as an important equipment to realize the coherent microwave combination was theoretically designed, built, and proof-of-principle experimentally tested. The theoretical and experimental S-parameters are basically consistent with each other: return loss <-25 dB, and the isolation degree between 2-channels of the HPM combiner >25 dB to avoid the inter-modulating between the HPM sources. The C-band HPM experiment was carried out, and the power capacity of the HPM combiner was demonstrated to reach multi-gigawatts.

EUS and EUS-FNA for diagnosis of esophageal tuberculosis

AIM: To summarize the endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) characteristics of esophageal tuberculosis and evaluate the role of EUS and EUS guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of esophageal tuberculosis.

METHODS: The clinical data, EUS and EUS-FNA data for 11 patients with esophageal tuberculosis were collected and analyzed retrospectively.

RESULTS: Eight lesions were found in the middle part of the esophagus and 3 in the upper part. The lesions demonstrated as protrusion in 7 cases and ulceration in 4 cases. The layers of the esophageal wall were unclear or disappeared in some cases, and in some patients low echo occupying lesions inside or outside the esophageal wall were showed by EUS. The internal echo of the lesions was heterogeneous, and strong echo spots could be observed. In most cases, enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes were observed. EUS-FNA was used to take biopsy specimens in 7 cases: caseouse necrosis was found in 2 cases; 3 biopsy specimens suggested tuberculosis; no cancer cells were observed in 2 biopsy specimens.

CONCLUSION: EUS can not only show the morphology and internal echo of the lesions, as well as the relationship between the lesions and esophageal wall, but also allow to observe the lymph nodes outside the esophageal wall. Biopsy specimens can be taken by EUS-FNA. EUS and EUS-FNA have high value in the diagnosis of esophageal tuberculosis.

Diagnostic value of electronic enteroscopy in small bowel diseases

AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic value of electronic enteroscopy in small bowel diseases by comparing with enterocolonic double phase computed tomography (CT).

METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 273 electronic enteroscopy procedures were carried out in 170 patients with suspected small bowel diseases, 129 of whom received enterocolonic double phase CT scan at the same time. The indications, detection rate, positive findings, and diagnostic yield of electronic enteroscopy were compared with those of CT. The diagnostic accuracy of electronic enteroscopy and CT was determined by comparing with pathological diagnosis.

RESULTS: Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) was the most common indication (60.6%, 103/170) for electronic enteroscopy. Inflammatory lesions, polyposis or tumors, and vascular lesions made up the first three positive findings of electronic enteroscopy in patients with suspected small bowel diseases. The detection rate and diagnostic yield of electronic enteroscopy were higher than those of CT [89.4% (152/170) vs 63.6% (82/129), 67.6% (115/170) vs 34.1% (44/129), both P < 0.05]. In patients with OGIB, the detection rate and diagnostic yield of electronic enteroscopy were also higher than those of CT [95.1% (98/103) vs 52.6% (41/78), 68.9% (71/103) vs 21.8% (17/78), both P < 0.05].

CONCLUSION: The diagnostic capacity of electronic enteroscopy is better than that of CT. Suspected OGIB is the most common indication for electronic enteroscopy, which has a relatively high detection rate and diagnostic yield. Electronic enteroscopy is a safe and effective diagnostic modality for small bowel diseases.

Protocol for callus induction and somatic embryogenesis in Moso Bamboo

Moso bamboo [Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens (Mazel ex J. Houz.) Ohwi] is one of the most important forest crops in China and the rest of Asia. Although many sympodial bamboo tissue culture protocols have been established, there is no protocol available for plantlet regeneration as indicated by callus induction for monopodial bamboos, such as Moso bamboo. In the present report, embryogenic callus induction, embryoid development, and germination were established for Moso bamboo from zygotic seed embryos. Callus was initiated from zygotic embryos after 10-20 d culture on MS media supplemented with 4.0 mg/L 2, 4-D and 0.1 mg/L zeatin (ZT). About 50% of the explants produced calli, and nearly 15% of the calli were found to be embryogenic in nature. These embryogenic calli can be subcultured for proliferation in the Murashige and Skoog media (MS) supplemented with 0.5-2.0 mg/L 2, 4-D. These calli were found to have maintained their capacity for regeneration even after one year of subculture. The viable somatic embryoids regenerated in medium containing 5.0-7.0 mg/L ZT. Nearly 5% of the calli were found capable of regenerating into plantlets directly in MS medium containing 5.0-7.0 mg/L ZT. Root growth was more pronounced when the plantlets were transferred to medium containing 2.0 mg/L NAA. After 30 days of subculture, the plantlets were transferred to a greenhouse.

MicroRNA-143 suppresses gastric cancer cell growth and induces apoptosis by targeting COX-2

AIM: To investigate the function of microRNA-143 (miR-143) in gastric cancer and explore the target genes of miR-143.

METHODS: A quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis was performed to evaluate miR-143 expression in gastric cancer cell lines. After transfecting gastric cancer cells with miR-143-5p and miR-143-3p precursors, Alamar blue and apoptosis assays were used to measure the respective proliferation and apoptosis rates. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression was determined by real-time RT-PCR and Western blot assays after miR-143 transfection. Reporter plasmids were constructed, and a luciferase reporter assay was used to identify the miR-143 binding site on COX-2.

RESULTS: Both miR-143-5p and miR-143-3p were significantly downregulated in multiple gastric cancer cell lines. Forced miR-143-5p and miR-143-3p expression in gastric cancer cells produced a profound cytotoxic effect. MiR-145-5p transfection into gastric cancer cells resulted in a greater growth inhibitory effect (61.23% ± 3.16% vs 46.58% ± 4.28%, P < 0.05 in the MKN-1 cell line) and a higher apoptosis rate (28.74% ± 1.93% vs 22.13% ± 3.31%, P < 0.05 in the MKN-1 cell line) than miR-143-3p transfection. Further analysis indicated that COX-2 expression was potently suppressed by miR-143-5p but not by miR-143-3p. The activity of a luciferase reporter construct that contained the 3’-untranslated region (UTR) of COX-2 was downregulated by miR-143-5p (43.6% ± 4.86%, P < 0.01) but not by miR-143-3p. A mutation in the miR-145-5p binding site completely ablated the regulatory effect on luciferase activity, which suggests that there is a direct miR-145-5p binding site in the 3’-UTR of COX-2.

CONCLUSION: Both miR-143-5p and miR-143-3p function as anti-oncomirs in gastric cancer. However, miR-143-5p alone directly targets COX-2, and it exhibits a stronger tumor suppressive effect than miR-143-3p.

Upregulation of OX40 ligand on monocytes contributes to early virological control in patients with chronic hepatitis C

Dysfunctional hepatitis C virus (HCV) specific CD4(+) T cells are known to contribute to inadequate adaptive immunity in chronic hepatitis C (CHC), although the underlying mechanisms remain largely undefined. In this study, OX40 ligand (OX40L) expression was investigated in 41 treatment-naïve CHC patients, 20 sustained virological responders and 36 healthy subjects. We observed that OX40L expression was significantly upregulated in peripheral monocytes in CHC patients compared with sustained virological responders and healthy subjects. OX40L upregulation correlated significantly with plasma viral load rather than serum alanine aminotransaminase levels. Furthermore, longitudinal analyses indicated that upregulated OX40L expression on monocytes is closely associated with rapid or early virological responses in patients receiving pegylated IFN-α/ribavirin treatment. In vitro, HCV core antigen strongly stimulated monocyte expression of OX40L and blockade of TLR2 signaling significantly downregulated OX40L expression. More importantly, elevated OX40L expression was also shown to be closely associated with elevation of the HCV-specific CD4(+) T-cell response and in vitro blockade of OX40L expressed on monocytes led to impaired CD4(+) T-cell function. These findings, therefore, implicate OX40L expression can be used as a marker to evaluate antiviral treatment efficacy and extend the notion that enhancement of OX40L expression could be a good way for immunotherapy in CHC patients.

[FTIR analysis of Sr2+ biosorption by Bacillus spp. strains isolated from soil treated with gamma-ray radiation]

One strain bacterium was isolated from purple soil of Sichuan basin. It was subject to Bacillus according to analysis results of 16S rDNA. The effect of its biosorption to Sr2+ under gamma-ray radiation was studied in this paper. As for the whole kinetic biosorption curves, the results show that bacterial growth rates of test groups have retardation phenomena compared to the control groups without radiation. Such as the appearance of biosorption equilibrium retarded 1.5 d while the max growth rate retarded 0.5 d after the radiation SEM analysis showed that the bacterial cells had abnormity distortion after radiation. This proved that gamma-ray radiation can bring obvious damage to experimental bacterial cells. FTIR analysis results indicated that bacteria cells were damaged by radiation and Sr2+ has cooperation damage effects with radiation in aqueous condition, and the bacterial cells of log phase are easier to be damaged by coming forth radiation than those of lag phase. This radiation damage under different radiation condition mainly leads to that the characteristic peaks of amylase, protein amide and lipids on bacterial cells are slightly shifted.

[The comparison between HIV-infected patients' Vdelta2 T cells expansion efficiencies by zoledronic acid and gammadelta TCR monoclonal antibody in vitro]

OBJECTIVE

To find out the more efficient induction method through investigating the expansion efficiencies of HIV-infected patients' Vdelta2 T cells induced by zoledronic acid (Zol) or gammadelta TCR monoclonal antibody (mAb).

METHODS

38 healthy control subjects (HC group) and 65 HIV infected patients (HIV group) were enrolled in this research. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of individuals were stimulated by Zol or gammadelta TCR mAb respectively for 14 days at 2.0 x 10(7) cells/ well, and then gammadelta T cells and Vdelta2 subsets frequencies were measured by flow cytometry (FCM) on 0, 7 and 14 day. The absolute numbers of Vdelta2 T cells were calculated and the Vdelta2 T cell expansion efficiencies by these two methods were compared.

RESULTS

The absolute numbers and frequencies of Vdelta2 T cell of HIV groups were lower than those of HC groups significantly on 0 day. After 14 days, the frequencies of Vdelta2 T cell of HIV group and HC group were(17.6 +/- 19.8)% and(64.3 +/- 4.5)% respectively, and the expansion indexes of Vdelta2 T cell were 54 +/- 40 and 74 +/- 29 respectively by induction of gammadelta TCR mAb. However, the frequencies of Vgammadelta2 T cell of HIV group and HC group were (69.6 +/- 21.2)% and (97.3 +/- 1.7)% respectively, and the Vgammadelta2 T cell expansion indexes were 538 +/- 11 and 5984 +/- 721 respectively by induction of Zol.

CONCLUSION

Zol could induce the vast expansion of Vgammadelta2 T cells of HIV infected patients. The expansion efficiency by Zol was better than that by the gammadelta TCR mAb.

Serum prolactin levels and the acute-phase efficacy in drug-naïve schizophrenia treated with ziprasidone and olanzapine (translated version)

OBJECTIVES. To study the efficacy and associated serum prolactin levels of ziprasidone and olanzapine treatment in drug-naïve schizophrenia patients. METHODS. All 78 inpatients with drug-naïve schizophrenia were recruited from the Department of Psychology, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. They were divided into either olanzapine group (n = 49 [24 men, 25 women]; mean [standard deviation] age, 24 [6] years) or ziprasidone group (n = 29 [14 men, 15 women]; mean [standard deviation] age, 23 [7] years), all of whom were treated for 4 weeks. The serum prolactin level, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S), and Clinical Global Impression-Improvement scores were measured before and at the end of treatment. RESULTS. In the olanzapine group, the respective mean (standard deviation) PANSS and CGI-S scores after the treatment (62 ± 15 and 3 ± 1) were significantly lower than those before the treatment (104 ± 14 and 6 ± 1) [p < 0.01]. In the ziprasidone group, the corresponding scores after the treatment (75 ± 20 and 4 ± 1) were also significantly lower than those before the treatment (104 ± 17 and 6 ± 1) [p < 0.01]. The decreases in mean (standard deviation) PANSS total (42 ± 17) and PANSS positive scores (12 ± 6) in the olanzapine group were significantly higher than those in the ziprasidone group (29 ± 12 and 6 ± 4, respectively) [p < 0.01]. The increase of serum prolactin in the ziprasidone female group (47 ± 51 µg/L) was significantly higher than that in the ziprasidone male group (17 ± 11 µg/L), the olanzapine male group (5 ± 16 µg/L), and the olanzapine female group (21 ± 34 µg/L) [p < 0.05]. CONCLUSIONS. Both ziprasidone and olanzapine are effective for treating drug-naïve acute schizophrenia, but olanzapine was superior to ziprasidone in terms of positive and general psychopathological symptoms. In women, ziprasidone was associated with greater changes in prolactin level than olanzapine.

Origin of strong white electroluminescence from dense Si nanodots embedded in silicon nitride

Strong white electroluminescence (EL) from SiN-based devices containing Si nanodots with a density of more than 4.6×10(12)cm(2) was investigated. The white EL illustrates enhanced light emission with increasing applied voltage and can be divided into two components, a dominant peak at ~710 nm and weak one at ~550 nm, which are close to those of the PL spectra optically pumped by the 325 and 488 nm lines, respectively. Based on the PL characteristics, we propose that the dominant EL band arises from the band-to-band recombination in the dense Si nanodots where quantum confinement plays a decisive role in the light emission, whereas the weak EL band originates from the radiative Si dangling bond (K⁰) centers in the silicon nitride matrix.

Synthesis of crystalline beta-FeSi2 under high-temperature and high-pressure

In this paper, we report the synthesis of crystalline beta-FeSi2 via the reaction of Si and Fe powders under high-temperature and high-pressure. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering results confirm formation of the beta-FeSi2 phase. Scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and selected-area electron diffraction patterns show that the beta-FeSi2 phase coexists with Si phase with small nanocrystal sizes. The formation of the beta-FeSi2 phase is a result of Si diffusion into Fe region. The obtained results suggest that the removal of Si phase can be reached through increasing Fe content and prolonging the duration of high-pressure thermal treatment.

Oxygen vacancy density-dependent transformation from infrared to Raman active vibration mode in SnO2 nanostructures

Raman spectra acquired from spherical, cubic, and cuboid SnO2 nanocrystals (NCs) reveal a morphologically independent Raman mode at ∼302 cm(-1). The frequency of this mode is slightly affected by the NC size, but the intensity increases obviously with decreasing NC size. By considering the dipole changes induced by oxygen vacancies and derivation based on the density functional theory and phonon confinement model, an oxygen vacancy density larger than 6% is shown to be responsible for the transformation of the IR to Raman active vibration mode, and the intensity enhancement is due to strong phonon confinement.

Mn²+-bonded reduced graphene oxide with strong radiative recombination in broad visible range caused by resonant energy transfer

The photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of Mn(2+)-bonded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are studied in details. The Mn(2+)-bonded rGO is synthesized using MnO(2)-decorated GO as the intermediate products and ideal tunable PL is obtained by enhancing the long-wavelength (450-550 nm) emission. The PL spectra excited by different wavelengths are analyzed to elucidate the mechanism, and the resonant energy transfer between Mn(2+) and sp(2) clusters of the rGO appears to be responsible for the enhanced long-wavelength emission. To examine the effect of Mn(2+) on the long-wavelength emission from the Mn(2+)-bonded rGO, the PL characteristics of Mn(2+)-bonded rGO with smaller Mn concentrations are studied and weaker emission is observed. Our theoretical calculation corroborates the experimental results.
