Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the 20th century, pursuing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) has emerged as an important developmental objective in numerous countries and across the global health community. With the intricate ramifications of population mobility (PM), the government faces a mounting imperative to judiciously deploy health expenditure to realise UHC effectively. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to construct a comprehensive UHC index for China, assess the spatial effects of Government Health Expenditure (GHE) on UHC, and explore the moderating effects of PM on this association. METHOD A Dynamic Spatial Durbin Model (DSDM) was employed to investigate the influence of the GHE on UHC. Therefore, we tested the moderating effect of PM. RESULTS In the short-term, the GHE negatively impacted local UHC. However, it enhanced the UHC in neighbouring regions. Over the long term, GHE improved local UHC but decreased UHC in neighbouring regions. In the short-term, when the PM exceeded 1.42, the GHE increased the local UHC. Over the long term, when the PM exceeded 1.107, the GHE impeded local UHC. If the PM exceeded 0.91 in the long term, the GHE promoted UHC in neighbouring regions. The results of this study offer a partial explanation of GHE decisions and behaviours. CONCLUSIONS To enhance UHC, a viable strategy involves augmenting vertical transfer payments from the central government to local governments. Local governments should institute healthcare systems tailored to the urban scale and developmental stages, with due consideration for PM. Optimising the information disclosure mechanism is also a worthwhile endeavour.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective was to utilize a smartwatch sphygmomanometer to predict new-onset hypertension within a short-term follow-up among individuals with high-normal blood pressure (HNBP). METHODS This study consisted of 3180 participants in the training set and 1000 participants in the validation set. Participants underwent both ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) using a smartwatch sphygmomanometer. Multivariable Cox regressions were used to analyze cumulative events. A nomogram was constructed to predict new-onset hypertension. Discrimination and calibration were assessed using the C-index and calibration curve, respectively. RESULTS Among the 3180 individuals with HNBP in the training set, 693 (21.8%) developed new-onset hypertension within a 6-month period. The nomogram for predicting new-onset hypertension had a C-index of 0.854 (95% CI, 0.843-0.867). The calibration curve demonstrated good agreement between the nomogram's predicted probabilities and actual observations for short-term new-onset hypertension. In the validate dataset, during the 6-month follow-up, the nomogram had a good C-index of 0.917 (95% CI, 0.904-0.930) and a good calibration curve. As the score increased, the risk of new-onset hypertension significantly increased, with an HR of 8.415 (95% CI: 5.153-13.744, p = .000) for the middle-score vs. low-score groups and 86.824 (95% CI: 55.071-136.885, p = .000) for the high-score vs. low-score group. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence for the use of smartwatch sphygmomanometer to monitor blood pressure in individuals at high risk of developing new-onset hypertension in the near future. Abstract
Background This targeted and comprehensive policy scan examined how different levels of governments in Australia and Canada responded to the financial crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We mapped the types of early policy responses addressing financial strain and promoting financial wellbeing. We also examined their equity considerations. Methods Through a systematic search, snowballing, and manual search, we identified Canadian and Australian policies at all government levels related to financial strain or financial wellbeing enacted or amended in 2019-2020. Using a deductive-inductive approach, policies were categorized by jurisdiction level, focal areas, and target population groups. Results In total, 213 and 97 policies in Canada and Australia, respectively, were included. Comparisons between Canadian and Australian policies indicated a more diversified and equity-targeted policy landscape in Canada. In both countries, most policies focused on individual and family finances, followed by housing and employment areas. Conclusions The policy scan identified gaps and missed opportunities in the early policies related to financial strain and financial wellbeing. While fast, temporary actions addressed individuals' immediate needs, we recommend governments develop a longer-term action plan to tackle the root causes of financial strain and poor financial wellbeing for better health and non-health crisis preparedness. Statement on Ethics and Informed Consent This research reported in this paper did not require ethical clearance or patient informed consent as the data sources were published policy documents. This study did not involve data collection with humans (or animals), nor any secondary datasets involving data provided by humans (or from animal studies).

Abstract
Objectives: This cohort study aimed to investigate the potential interplay between systolic blood pressure (SBP), frequency of sauna bathing (FSB), and all-cause mortality risk among Caucasian men. Design: A prospective study was conducted, involving 2575 men aged 42 to 61 years. Baseline assessments included resting blood pressure measurements and self-reported sauna bathing habits. SBP levels were categorized as normal (<140 mmHg) or high (≥140 mmHg), while FSB was classified as low (≤2 sessions/week) or high (3-7 sessions/week). Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox regression analysis, while adjusting for lifestyle factors, lipids, inflammation, and comorbidities. Results: Over a median follow-up of 27.8 years, 1,618 deaths were recorded. In the adjusted analysis, individuals with high SBP versus low SBP showed a 29% increased all-cause mortality risk (HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.16-1.43). Similarly, those with low FSB versus high FSB exhibited a 16% elevated mortality risk (HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.02-1.31). When considering combined effects, participants with high SBP-low FSB had a 47% higher mortality risk (HR 1.47, 95% CI 1.24-1.74) compared to those with normal SBP-high FSB. However, no significant association was observed between individuals with high SBP-high FSB and mortality risk (HR 1.24, 95% CI 0.98-1.57). There were potential additive and multiplicative interactions between SBP and sauna bathing concerning mortality risk. Conclusions: This study reveals a potential interplay between SBP, sauna bathing, and mortality risk in Finnish men. Frequent sauna bathing may mitigate the increased mortality risk associated with elevated SBP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe and compare echocardiographic findings before renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) and 6 and 24 months after the procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with treatment resistant hypertension (TRH) were included in this non-randomised intervention study. RDN was performed by a single experienced operator using the Symplicity Catheter System. Echocardiographic measurements were performed at baseline, and after 6 and 24 months. RESULTS The cohort consisted of 21 patients with TRH, with a mean systolic office blood pressure (BP) of 163 mmHg and mean diastolic BP 109 mmHg. Mixed model analysis showed no significant change in left ventricular (LV) mass index (LVMI) or left atrium volume index (LAVI) after the RDN procedure. Higher LVMI at baseline was significantly associated with greater reduction in LVMI (p < 0.001). Relative wall thickness (RWT) increased over time (0.48 mm after two years) regardless of change in BP. There was a small but significant reduction in LV end-diastolic (LVIDd) and end-systolic (LVIDs) diameters after RDN, with a mean reduction of 2.6 and 2.4 mm, respectively, after two years. Progression to concentric hypertrophy was observed only in in patients who did not achieve normal BP values, despite BP reduction after RDN. CONCLUSION There was no reduction of LV mass after RDN. We found a small statistically significant reduction in LVIDd and LVIDs, which together with increase in RWT can indicate progression towards concentric hypertrophy. BP reduction after RDN on its own does not reverse concentric remodelling if target BP is not achieved.

Abstract
Chemical-nose strategy has achieved certain success in the discrimination and identification of pathogens. However, this strategy usually relies on non-specific interactions, which are prone to be significantly disturbed by the change of environment thus limiting its practical usefulness. Herein, we present a novel chemical-nose sensing approach leveraging the difference in the dynamic metabolic variation during peptidoglycan metabolism among different species for rapid pathogen discrimination. Pathogens were first tethered with clickable handles through metabolic labeling at two different acidities (pH = 5 and 7) for 20 and 60 min, respectively, followed by click reaction with fluorescence up-conversion nanoparticles to generate a four-dimensional signal output. This discriminative multi-dimensional signal allowed eight types of model bacteria to be successfully classified within the training set into strains, genera, and Gram phenotypes. As the difference in signals of the four sensing channels reflects the difference in the amount/activity of enzymes involved in metabolic labeling, this strategy has good anti-interference capability, which enables precise pathogen identification within 2 h with 100% accuracy in spiked urinary samples and allows classification of unknown species out of the training set into the right phenotype. The robustness of this approach holds significant promise for its widespread application in pathogen identification and surveillance.

Abstract
Background Insomnia and depression are prevalent mental disorders that are often comorbid among older adults. Lifestyle intervention strategies incorporating Tai Chi or conventional exercise have been shown to alleviate symptoms of insomnia and depression. However, the comparative efficacy of these exercise modalities in individuals with both disorders has yet to be determined. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the efficacy of Tai Chi and conventional exercise for reducing depressive symptoms in older adults with chronic insomnia and depressive symptoms, when compared to a health education control. Methods This study is a prospective, assessor-blinded, three-arm, parallel group, randomized controlled trial. Older adults aged ≥60 years with a diagnosis of chronic insomnia and depressive symptoms will be randomly assigned to a Tai Chi, conventional exercise or health education control condition on a 1:1:1 basis. Interventions will last for 3 months, with a 6-month follow-up period. The primary outcome is depressive symptoms, assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Secondary outcomes include subjective sleep quality, 7-day actigraphy, 7-day sleep diary, anxiety symptoms, quality of life, medication usage and physical function. All measurements will be conducted at baseline, 3 months and 9 months by outcome assessors who are blinded to group allocation. Discussion This study will compare the efficacy of Tai Chi and conventional exercise in improving depression outcomes in older adults with chronic insomnia and depressive symptoms. Our results will shed light on the clinical potential of these interventions for combating insomnia and depression in older adults.

Abstract
Mood disorders have a genetic and environmental component and interactions (GxE) on the risk of psychiatric diseases have been investigated. The same GxE interactions may affect wellbeing measures, which go beyond categorical diagnoses and reflect the health-disease continuum. We evaluated GxE effects in the UK Biobank, considering as outcomes subjective wellbeing (feeling good and functioning well) and objective measures (education and income). We estimated the polygenic risk scores (PRSs) of major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Stressful/traumatic events during adulthood or childhood were considered as E variables, as well as social support. The addition of the PRSxE interaction to PRS and E variables was tested in linear or multinomial regression models, adjusting for confounders. We included 33 k-380 k participants, depending on the variables considered. Most PRSs and E factors showed additive effects on outcomes, with effect sizes generally 3-5 times larger for E variables than PRSs. We found some interaction effects, particularly when considering recent stress, history of a long illness/disability/infirmity, and social support. Higher PRSs increased the negative effects of stress on wellbeing, but they also increased the positive effects of social support, with interaction effects particularly for the outcomes health satisfaction, loneliness, and income (p < Bonferroni corrected threshold of 1.92e-4). PRSxE terms usually added ∼0.01-0.02% variance explained to the corresponding additive model. PRSxE effects on wellbeing involve both positive and negative E factors. Despite small variance explained at the population level, preventive/therapeutic interventions that modify E factors could be beneficial at the individual level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental health problems in people who use illicit stimulants. Improved understanding of the temporal relationship between methamphetamine, ecstasy/MDMA, or cocaine use with anxiety or depression informs public health interventions and treatment options for those experiencing this co-occurrence. This narrative systematic review sought to examine associations and temporality between the use of methamphetamine, ecstasy/MDMA, or cocaine, with anxiety or depressive symptoms. Method Systematic searches of 4 electronic databases were conducted up to August 2023. Study eligibility included the measurement of anxiety and/or depressive symptoms, and frequency of illicit stimulant use (methamphetamine, cocaine, or ecstasy/MDMA) at two separate time points, with data analysis of the association between these variables. The Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal Checklist was utilised to assess quality. Data was extracted, and a narrative synthesis incorporating an eight-criteria framework to assess associations was conducted. Results 4432 studies were screened for eligibility; 11 studies (3 RCTs and 8 prospective cohort studies) were included. Evidence for an association between depressive symptoms and methamphetamine use was demonstrated in six studies, with temporal evidence in three studies supporting methamphetamine use preceding depressive symptoms. Three studies reported an association between cocaine use and depressive symptoms. Evidence for associations with any of the illicit stimulants and anxiety symptoms was lacking. CONCLUSIONS There was some evidence to support a case for temporality, particularly for methamphetamine use and depressive symptoms. Investing in longitudinal studies is pivotal to understanding the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between illicit stimulant use and anxiety or depressive symptoms. A limitation of the study was the variation in the measurement and analysis of outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of weekend catch-up sleep (WCS) on depressive symptoms is inconsistent among different populations, with limited evidence in Americans. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between WCS and depressive symptoms in American adults. METHODS We recruited 7719 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2020. Information on sleep duration and depressive symptoms were assessed by several self-reported questions and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), respectively. Then, WCS duration was calculated as weekend sleep duration minus weekday sleep duration, and WCS was further defined as WCS duration >0 h. Survey designed regression analyses were used to assess the association of WCS and depressive symptoms. RESULTS In fully adjusted multivariate logistic regression models, the odds ratio (95 % confidence interval) for depressive symptoms and the β (95 % confidence interval) for PHQ-9 score in response to WCS were 0.746 (0.462, 1.204; P = 0.218) and -0.429 (-0.900, 0.042; P = 0.073), respectively. Besides, the smooth relationship presented L-shaped, and only WCS duration of 0-2 h was statistically significantly associated with depressive symptoms or PHQ-9 score. Subgroup analyses showed that the negative associations were stronger among men, adults younger than 65 years, and those with short weekday sleep duration (P for interaction <0.05). LIMITATIONS The cross-sectional design limits the capability for causal relationship between WCS and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that moderate WCS is associated with reduced odds of depressive symptoms, which provides additional epidemiological evidence for the effects of sleep on depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous epidemiological studies examining the prospective association between maternal prenatal tobacco smoking and offspring academic achievement have reported conflicting results. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to examine the magnitude and consistency of association reported by those studies. METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis was guided by the PRISMA protocol. Relevant epidemiological studies on the topic were extracted from four main databases (PubMed/Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, and Scopus). The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to appraise the methodological quality of the included studies. We conducted a narrative assessment of the studies that did not report effect estimates. Inverse variance-weighted random effect meta-analysis was used to combine studies reporting effect sizes to estimate pooled adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The review was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022350901). RESULTS Nineteen observational studies, published between 1973 and 2021 with a total of 1.25 million study participants were included in the final review. Of these, fifteen studies (79 %) reported reduced academic achievement in offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco smoking. The eight primary studies (sample size = 723,877) included in the meta-analysis together suggested a 49 % higher risk of reduced academic achievement in offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco smoking when compared to non-exposed offspring (Pooled odds ratio = 1.49, 95 % CI:1.17-1.91). CONCLUSION Our review found a positive association between maternal prenatal tobacco smoking and offspring reduced academic achievement. However, variation in the adjustment of potential confounders and significant heterogeneity across included studies limited more conclusive inference. Mechanistic studies to identify causal pathways and specific academic impacts are needed to inform targeted developmental programs to assist child learning and academic performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Genetic factors and night shift work both contribute to the risk of depression, but whether the association of night shift work with depression varies by genetic predisposition remains unclear. OBJECTIVES To assess whether night shift work is associated with a higher risk of depression regardless of genetic predisposition. METHODS We used data from the UK biobank of 247,828 adults aged 38-71 free of depression at baseline from March 13, 2006, to October 1, 2010. Genetic predisposition to depression was assessed using polygenic risk scores (PRS) weighted sums of genetic variant indicator variables and classified as low (lowest tertile), intermediate (tertile 2), and high (highest tertile). Night shift work exposures were collected using a touchscreen questionnaire and were divided into four categories. RESULTS After a median follow-up of 12.7 years, 7315 participants developed depression. Compared with day workers, HRs (95 % CIs) of depression were 1.28 (1.19-1.38) for shift work, but never or rarely night shifts, 1.32 (1.20-1.45) for irregular night shifts, and 1.20 (1.07-1.34) for permanent night shifts. Considering lifetime employment and compared with never shift workers, >8 nights/month (HR: 1.40; 95 % CI: 1.19-1.66) and <10 years (HR: 1.30; 95 % CI: 1.09-1.54) of night shift work were associated with a higher risk of depression. In joint effect analyses, compared to participants with low genetic predisposition and day workers, the HRs (95 % CIs) of depression were 1.49 (1.32-1.69) in those with high genetic predisposition and shift work, but never or rarely night shifts, and 1.36 (1.20-1.55) for those with high genetic predisposition and irregular/permanent night shifts. In addition, there was neither multiplicative nor additive interaction between genetic predisposition and night shift work on the risk of depression. CONCLUSIONS Night shift work was associated with an increased risk of depression regardless of genetic risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between physical multimorbidity and depression differs by populations. However, no direct inter- or intrapopulation comparison of the association has been conducted. Thus, this study aims to estimate the association in China and the United States and reveal inter- and intrapopulation differences in the association. METHODS Middle-aged and older adults from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and the Health and Retirement Study were included. Physical multimorbidity was defined as the simultaneous presence of two or more chronic physical conditions and depressive symptoms was measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Generalized estimating equation model and stratification multilevel method were the main statistical models. RESULTS The presence of physical multimorbidity was associated with a higher risk of depression in both China (RR = 1.360 [95 % CI: 1.325-1.395]) and the US (RR = 1.613 [95 % CI: 1.529-1.701]). For individuals at a low risk of multimorbidity, multimorbidity was associated with 47.4 % (95 % CI: 1.377-1.579) and 71.1 % (95 % CI: 1.412-2.074) increases in the likelihood of depression in China and the US. The effect size was smaller for individuals at a moderate or high risk. However, the cross-national differences were greater for those with a high risk of multimorbidity. LIMITATIONS The self-report measures, attribution bias. CONCLUSIONS Compared to Chinese adults, the presence of physical multimorbidity led to an additional increase in depressive symptoms for American counterparts. The association was stronger for individuals at a low risk of multimorbidity, but cross-national differences were observed mostly among individuals at a high risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the potential correlation between the amount and source of dietary protein and cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as the potential impact of genetic susceptibility on these connections. METHODS We performed a prospective analysis of 98,224 participants from the UK. We measured dietary protein intake using two 24-hour dietary recall interviews. To analyze the data, we used multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models and restricted cubic spline models. Additionally, we calculated weighted genetic risk scores. RESULTS A total of 8818 new cases of CVD were documented, which included 4076 cases of coronary artery disease (CAD) and 1126 cases of stroke. The study found a J-shaped association (p nonlinearity = 0.005) between CVD risk and the percentage of energy obtained from consuming plant protein. Higher intake of plant protein and whole protein was associated with a decreased risk of CVD. On the other hand, larger intakes of animal protein was linked to a higher occurrence of CAD. Additionally, increased intake of plant protein was also linked to a lower incidence of stroke. Replacing 5 % of animal protein-based energy intake with plant protein-based energy intake resulted in a 5 % decrease in CVD risk. LIMITATIONS There remains an effect of residual confounders. CONCLUSION The consumption of larger amounts of plant protein, whole protein, and nut protein was found to be associated with a lower risk of CVD events. Conversely, higher intakes of animal protein was associated with an increased risk of CAD events. Furthermore, replacing 5 % of energy intake from animal protein with energy intake from plant protein was found to reduce the risk of CVD by 5 %.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression, migraine, insomnia, and fibromyalgia are reportedly comorbidities. Nevertheless, no study has evaluated the comorbidity of all four of these disorders. This study aimed to investigate the comorbidity of these four disorders. METHODS Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data of the Circannual Change in Headache and Sleep study, an online nationwide population-based survey. Validated questionnaires were used to diagnose the disorders and measure quality of life. The change of clinical characteristics by addition of any comorbidity was analyzed using the Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test. RESULTS The prevalence rates of depression, migraine, insomnia, and fibromyalgia were 7.2 %, 5.6 %, 13.3 %, and 5.8 %, respectively. Among the 3030 included participants, 494 (16.3 %), 164 (5.4 %), 40 (1.3 %), and 6 (0.2 %) had one, two, three, and four of these conditions, respectively. The number of headache days per 30 days (Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test, p = 0.011) and migraine-related disability (migraine disability assessment score, p = 0.021) increased with an increase in the number of comorbidities but not with the intensity of headache (visual analog scale, p = 0.225) among participants with migraine. The severity of insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index, p < 0.001) and fibromyalgia (fibromyalgia severity score, p = 0.002) increased with additional comorbidities; however, depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9, p = 0.384) did not show such an increase. LIMITATIONS The diagnoses of conditions were based on self-reported questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS The findings confirmed significant comorbidity between depression, migraine, insomnia, and fibromyalgia. Health professionals should be aware of the probable comorbidity of depression, migraine, insomnia, and fibromyalgia when caring for individuals with any of these four disorders.

Abstract
CircRNAs are a class of single-stranded RNAs characterized by covalently looped structures. Emerging advances have promoted our understanding of circRNA biogenesis, nuclear export, biological functions, and functional mechanisms. Roles of circRNAs in diverse diseases have been increasingly recognized in the past decade, with novel approaches in bioinformatics analysis and new strategies in modulating circRNA levels, which have made circRNAs the hot spot for therapeutic applications. Moreover, due to the intrinsic features of circRNAs such as high stability, conservation, and tissue-/stage-specific expression, circRNAs are believed to be promising prognostic and diagnostic markers for diseases. Aiming cardiovascular disease (CVD), one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, we briefly summarize the current understanding of circRNAs, provide the recent progress in circRNA functions and functional mechanisms in CVD, and discuss the future perspectives both in circRNA research and therapeutics based on existing knowledge.

Abstract
Accurate prediction of biological age can inform public health measures to extend healthy lifespans and reduce chronic conditions. Multiple theoretical models and methods have been developed; however, their applicability and accuracy are still not extensive. Here, we report Differential Aging and Health Index (DAnHI), a novel measure of age deviation, developed using physical and serum biomarkers from four million individuals in Korea's National Health Screening Program. Participants were grouped into aging statuses (< 26 vs. ≥ 26, < 27 vs. ≥ 27, …, < 75 vs. ≥ 75 years) as response variables in a binary logistic regression model with thirteen biomarkers as independent variables. DAnHI for each individual was calculated as the weighted mean of their relative probabilities of being classified into each older age status, based on model ages ranging from 26 to 75. DAnHI in our large study population showed a steady increase with the increase in age and was positively associated with death after adjusting for chronological age. However, the effect size of DAnHI on the risk of death varied according to the age group and sex. The hazard ratio was highest in the 50-59-year age group and then decreased as the individuals aged. This study demonstrates that routine health check-up biomarkers can be integrated into a quantitative measure for predicting aging-related health status and death via appropriate statistical models and methodology. Our DAnHI-based results suggest that the same level of aging-related health status does not indicate the same degree of risk for death.

Abstract
Due to climate change, the air pollution problem has become more and more prominent [23]. Air pollution has impacts on people globally, and is considered one of the leading risk factors for premature death worldwide; it was ranked as number 4 according to the website [24]. A study, 'The Global Burden of Disease,' reported 4,506,193 deaths were caused by outdoor air pollution in 2019 [22,25]. The air pollution problem is become even more apparent when it comes to developing countries [22], including Thailand, which is considered one of the developing countries [26]. In this research, we focus and analyze the air pollution in Thailand, which has the annual average PM2.5 (particulate matter 2.5) concentration falls in between 15 and 25, classified as the interim target 2 by 2021's WHO AQG (World Health Organization's Air Quality Guidelines) [27]. (The interim targets refer to areas where the air pollutants concentration is high, with 1 being the highest concentration and decreasing down to 4 [27,28]). However, the methodology proposed here can also be adopted in other areas as well. During the winter in Thailand, Bangkok and its surrounding metroplex have been facing the issue of air pollution (e.g., PM2.5) every year. Currently, air quality measurement is done by simply implementing physical air quality measurement devices at designated-but limited number of locations. In this work, we propose a method that allows us to estimate the Air Quality Index (AQI) on a larger scale by utilizing Landsat 8 images with machine learning techniques. We propose and compare hybrid models with pure regression models to enhance AQI prediction based on satellite images. Our hybrid model consists of two parts as follows:•The classification part and the estimation part, whereas the pure regressor model consists of only one part, which is a pure regression model for AQI estimation.•The two parts of the hybrid model work hand in hand such that the classification part classifies data points into each class of air quality standard, which is then passed to the estimation part to estimate the final AQI. From our experiments, after considering all factors and comparing their performances, we conclude that the hybrid model has a slightly better performance than the pure regressor model, although both models can achieve a generally minimum R2 (R2 > 0.7). We also introduced and tested an additional factor, DOY (day of year), and incorporated it into our model. Additional experiments with similar approaches are also performed and compared. And, the results also show that our hybrid model outperform them. Abstract
This study investigates sex differences in the effects of macronutrient quantity, quality, and timing on mortality in metabolically unhealthy overweight/obesity (MUO) populations. The study included 18,345 participants, including 9204 men and 9141 women. The Cox proportional risk model and isocaloric substitution effects were used to examine the association of macronutrient intake and subtype with all-cause mortality in the MUO populations. After adjusting for the potential covariates, The risk of all-cause mortality was elevated in men in the highest 25% percentile of poor-quality carbohydrates compared with men in the lowest quartile (odds ratio [OR]: 2.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.40-2.98). Compared with women in the lowest quartile, the risk of all-cause mortality for women in the highest 25% percentile for high-quality carbohydrates (OR: 0.74; 95% CI, 0.55-0.99) and unsaturated fatty acids (OR: 0.54; 95% CI, 0.32-0.93) were decreased. In women, replacing low-quality carbohydrates with high-quality carbohydrates on an isocaloric basis reduces the risk of all-cause mortality by approximately 9%. We find that different macronutrient consumption subtypes are associated with all-cause mortality in MUO populations, with differential effects between men and women, and that the risk of all-cause mortality is influenced by macronutrient quality and meal timing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to ambient ozone pollution causes health loss and even death, and both are the main risk factors for the disease burden worldwide. We comprehensively evaluated the ozone pollution-related disease burden. METHODS First, numbers and age-standardized rates of deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were assessed globally and by sub-types in 2019. Furthermore, the temporal trend of the disease burden was explored by the linear regression model from 1990 to 2019. The cluster analysis was used to evaluate the changing pattern of related disease burden across Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) regions. Finally, the age-period-cohort (APC) model and the Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) model were used to predict the future disease burden in the next 25 years. RESULT Exposure to ozone pollution contributed to 365,222 deaths and 6,210,145 DALYs globally in 2019, which accounted for 0.65 % of deaths globally and 0.24 % of DALYs globally. The disease burden was consistently increasing with age. Males were high-risk populations and low-middle socio-demographic index (SDI) regions were high-risk areas. The disease burden of ozone pollution varied considerably across the GBD regions and the countries. In 2019, the number of deaths and DALYs cases increased by 76.11 % and 56.37 %, respectively compared to those in 1990. The predicted results showed that the number of deaths cases and DALYs cases for both genders would still increase from 2020 to 2044. CONCLUSION In conclusion, ambient ozone pollution has threatened public health globally. More proactive and effective strategic measures should be developed after considering global-specific circumstances.

Abstract
In Great Britain, limited studies have employed machine learning methods to predict air pollution especially ozone (O3) with high spatiotemporal resolution. This study aimed to address this gap by developing random forest models for four key pollutants (fine and inhalable particulate matter [PM2.5 and PM10], nitrogen dioxide [NO2] and O3) by integrating multiple-source predictors at a daily level and 1-km resolution. The out-of-bag R2 (root mean squared error, RMSE) between predictions from models and measurements from monitoring stations in 2006-2013 was 0.85 (3.63 μg/m3) for PM2.5, 0.77 (6.00 μg/m3) for PM10, 0.85 (9.71 μg/m3) for NO2, and 0.85 (9.39 μg/m3) for maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) O3 at daily level, and the predicting accuracy was higher at monthly and annual level. The high-resolution predictions captured characterized spatiotemporal patterns of the four pollutants. Higher concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 were distributed in densely populated southern regions of Great Britain while O3 showed an inverse spatial pattern in general, which could not be fully depicted by monitoring stations. Therefore, predictions produced in this study could improve exposure assessment with less exposure misclassification and flexible exposure windows for future epidemiological studies to investigate the impact of air pollution across Great Britain.

Abstract
Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) posed injury for gastrointestinal and respiratory systems, ascribing with the lung-gut axis. However, the cross-talk mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we attempted to establish the response networks of lung-gut axis in mice exposed to PM2.5 at environmental levels. Male Balb/c mice were exposed to PM2.5 (dose of 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/kg) collected from Chengdu, China for 10 weeks, through intratracheally instillation, and examined the effect of PM2.5 on lung functions of mice. The changes of lung and gut microbiota and metabolic profiles of mice in different groups were determined. Furthermore, the results of multi-omics were conjointly analyzed to elucidate the primary microbes and the associated metabolites in lung and gut responsible for PM2.5 exposure. Accordingly, the cross-talk network and key pathways between lung-gut axis were established. The results indicated that exposed to PM2.5 0.1 mg/kg induced obvious inflammations in mice lung, while emphysema was observed at 1.0 mg/kg. The levels of metabolites guanosine, hypoxanthine, and hepoxilin B3 increased in the lung might contribute to lung inflammations in exposure groups. For microbiotas in lung, PM2.5 exposure significantly declined the proportions of Halomonas and Lactobacillus. Meanwhile, the metabolites in gut including L-tryptophan, serotonin, and spermidine were up-regulated in exposure groups, which were linked to the decreasing of Oscillospira and Helicobacter in gut. Via lung-gut axis, the activations of pathways including Tryptophan metabolism, ABC transporters, Serotonergic synapse, and Linoleic acid metabolism contributed to the cross-talk between lung and gut tissues of mice mediated by PM2.5. In summary, the microbes including Lactobacillus, Oscillospira, and Parabacteroides, and metabolites including hepoxilin B3, guanosine, hypoxanthine, L-tryptophan, and spermidine were the main drivers. In this lung-gut axis study, we elucidated some pro- and pre-biotics in lung and gut microenvironments contributed to the adverse effects on lung functions induced by PM2.5 exposure.

Abstract
Oxidative/nitrosative damage takes part in chronic disease development, which generates an urgent need for intervention and better therapies to manage them. The scientific community has demanded easy-to-run, cheap, and reliable methods for cellular antioxidant activity assays. This work standardised and validated an erythrocyte cellular antioxidant activity and membrane protection/injury (HERYCA-P) protocol to study food-derive extracts. The method measures intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, lipoperoxidation, and haemolysis induced by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride. Quercetin decreased ROS generation by 50.4% and haemolysis by 2.2%, while ascorbic acid inhibited lipid peroxidation by 40.1%. Total phenolic contents of teas were correlated with decreased ROS generation (r = -0.924), lipoperoxidation (r = -0.951), and haemolysis (r = -0.869). The erythrocyte ROS generation and lipoperoxidation were also associated with CUPRAC (r = -0.925; r = -0.951) and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (r = -0.936; r = -0.949). The precision rates of antioxidant standards and tea samples were below 15%. HERYCA-P is feasible as a complementary antioxidant assay for food matrices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have already confirmed the association between Dickkopf (Dkk) protein and the occurrence and progression of atherosclerosis. However, there is limited clinical evidence regarding the serum levels of Dickkopf-1 (Dkk1) and Dickkopf-3 (Dkk3) in relation to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), particularly acute coronary syndrome (ACS). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 88 healthy volunteers and 280 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing coronary angiography for angina between October 2021 and October 2022, including 96 cases of stable angina (SA), 96 of unstable angina (UA) and 88 of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were included finally. The serum concentrations of Dkk1 and Dkk3 were measured using electrochemiluminescence of Meso Scale Discovery. The predictive value of single or combined application of serum Dkk1 and Dkk3 in CAD and ACS were evaluated. RESULTS The serum levels of Dkk1 were significantly higher in the SA group, UA group, and AMI group compared to the control group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that elevated serum Dkk1 levels were independent predictive factors for increased risk of CAD and ACS (OR = 1.027, 95%CI = 1.019-1.034, p < 0.001; OR = 1.045, 95%CI = 1.028-1.053, p < 0.001, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed that the optimal cutoff value of serum Dkk1 for predicting ACS was 205 ng/dl, with a sensitivity of 82.6% and specificity of 96.6%. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.930 (95%CI: 0.899-0.961, p < 0.001). Regarding Dkk3, serum Dkk3 levels were elevated in CAD patients compared to the healthy control group, and significantly higher in ACS patients compared to SA patients. Serum Dkk3 was significantly associated with increased risk of CAD and ACS (OR = 1.131, 95%CI = 1.091-1.173, p < 0.001; OR = 1.201, 95%CI = 1.134-1.271, p < 0.001, respectively). ROC curve analysis showed that the optimal cutoff value of serum Dkk3 for predicting ACS was 50.82 ng/ml, with a sensitivity of 85.9% and specificity of 87.5%. The AUC was 0.925 (95%CI: 0.894-0.956, p < 0.001). When serum Dkk1 and Dkk3 are combined as predictive factors for ACS, the AUC was 0.975. CONCLUSION Serum levels of Dkk1 and Dkk3 are significantly associated with an increased risk of CAD and ACS, and they possess predictive value for CAD and ACS. The combination of serum Dkk1 and Dkk3 is a superior predictive factor for CAD and ACS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Stroke attributable to nonoptimal temperature needs more attention with dramatic climate change. The aim of this study was to estimate the global burden and distribution characteristics of the burden. METHODS In this ecological study, we collected data from the Climate Research Unit Gridded Time Series, the World Bank databases, and the Global Burden of Diseases study to estimate the distribution of burden. We used the joinpoint model, decomposition analysis, age-period-cohort model, panel data analysis, and health inequality analysis to assess the different types of stroke burden attributable to different climatic conditions. RESULTS The burden of stroke attributable to nonoptimal temperature continued to grow, and aging was a key factor in this increase. In 2019, 521,031 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 402,433-663,996) deaths and 9,423,649 (95% UI 7,207,660-12,055,172) disability-adjusted life years [DALYs] attributable to stroke due to nonoptimal temperature were recorded globally. Globally, men (age-standardized mortality rate [ASMR] 7.70, 95% UI 5.80-9.73; age-standardized DALY rate [ASDR] 139.69, 95% UI 102.96-178.54 in 2019) had a heavier burden than women (ASMR 5.89, 95% UI 4.50-7.60; ASDR 96.02, 95% UI 72.62-123.85 in 2019). Central Asia (ASMR 18.12, 95% UI 13.40-24.53; ASDR 327.35, 95% UI 240.24-440.61 in 2019) had the heaviest burden at the regional level. In the national level, North Macedonia (ASMR 32.97, 95% UI 20.57-47.44 in 2019) and Mongolia (ASDR 568.54, 95% UI 242.03-1,031.14 in 2019) had the highest ASMR/ASDR, respectively. Low temperature currently contributes to the main burden (deaths 474,002, 95% UI 355,077-606,537; DALYs 8,357,198, 95% UI 6,186,217-10,801,911 attributable to low temperature vs deaths 48,030, 95% UI 5,630-104,370; DALYs 1,089,329, 95% UI 112,690-2,375,345 attributable to high temperature in 2019). However, the burden due to high temperature has increased rapidly, especially among people aged older than 10 years, and was disproportionately concentrated in low sociodemographic index (SDI) regions such as Africa. In addition, the rapid increase in the stroke burden due to high temperature in Central Asia also requires special attention. DISCUSSION This is the first study to assess the global stroke burden attributed to nonoptimal temperature. The dramatic increase in the burden due to high temperature requires special attention, especially in low-SDI countries.

Abstract
Obtaining clean energy is of prime importance for planetary health and sustainable development. We aimed to assess the association between residential energy transition and the risk of chronic respiratory diseases. Using data from the Global Health Observatory and Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study, we delineated the spatial distribution and temporal trends of the population using clean fuels for cooking at a global scale. In the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, we performed rigorous and well-structured multistage analyses incorporating both cross-sectional and prospective data analyses to examine the associations between solid fuel use, residential energy transition, duration of solid fuel use, and the risk of chronic respiratory diseases. Despite great progress, huge disparities in access to clean energy persist globally. Residential energy transition was associated with a lower risk of chronic respiratory diseases. In the period of 2011-2013, compared with persistent solid fuel users, both participants who switched from solid to clean fuels (adjusted risk ratio [RR] 0.78, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.62-0.98) and persistent clean fuel users (adjusted RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.57-0.89) had significantly lower risk of chronic respiratory diseases (p < 0.001 for trend). Consistent associations were observed in the period of 2011-2015 and 2011-2018. Household energy transition from solid to clean fuels could reduce the risk of chronic respiratory diseases. This is a valuable lesson for policy-makers and the general public to accelerate energy switching to alleviate the burden of chronic respiratory diseases and achieve health benefits, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract
Insulin resistance (IR), linked to air pollution, is an initial stage of early-onset Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). While ceramide metabolism plays an important role in IR pathogenesis, the effects of air pollution on this process and its mechanisms remain unclear. We recruited young adults aged 18-30 years to a panel study in Wuhan, China. Using personal portable devices and stationary monitoring stations, we tracked particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and Ozone (O3) levels. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based metabolomics quantified ceramide metabolism, and Illumina Infinium Human Methylation 850 kBeadChip assay measured deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation. Linear mixed-effects models assessed relationships of air pollution with i) IR indexes, ii) ceramide metabolism, and iii) DNA methylation. Mediation analysis was subsequently performed to evaluate the potential mediating effect of DNA methylation in the association between air pollution and ceramide metabolism. PM2.5 and O3 were associated with elevated IR. Specifically, each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and O3 at lag0-12 h significantly increased triglyceride‑glucose index (TyG index) and TyG-BMI (TyG - Body mass index) by 0.88%, 0.89% and 0.26%, 0.26%, respectively. Furthermore, levels of eight ceramides were altered by air pollution exposure, and nine methylated CpG sites in inflammation genes mediated the effects of air pollution on ceramide metabolism. Our findings imply the existence of a novel mechanism connecting air pollution to IR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A recently discovered risk factor for chronic liver disease is ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Our research aims to elucidate the effects of PM2.5 on liver injury and the potential molecular mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS A population-based longitudinal study involving 102,918 participants from 15 Chinese cities, using linear mixed-effect models, found that abnormal alterations in liver function were significantly associated with long-term exposure to PM2.5. The serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, direct bilirubin, and triglyceride increased by 2.05%, 2.04%, 0.58%, 2.99%, and 1.46% with each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5. In contrast, the serum levels of total protein, albumin, and prealbumin decreased by 0.27%, 0.48%, and 2.42%, respectively. Mice underwent chronic inhalation exposure to PM2.5 experienced hepatic inflammation, steatosis and fibrosis. In vitro experiments found that hepatocytes experienced an inflammatory response and lipid metabolic dysregulation due to PM2.5, which also activated hepatic stellate cells. The down-regulation and mis-localization of polarity protein Par3 mediated PM2.5-induced liver injury. CONCLUSIONS PM2.5 exposure induced liver injury, mainly characterized by steatosis and fibrosis. The down-regulation and mis-localization of Par3 were important mechanisms of liver injury induced by PM2.5.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to analyze long-term trends of cervical cancer (CC) burden in China based on the GBD 2019 data and provide information and data support for formulating corresponding policies to control CC. METHODS Incidence and mortality rate data of CC in China were described using GBD 2019 data. The Joinpoint regression analysis and age-period-cohort model were implemented to describe temporal trends of CC in China over the past 30 years. ARIMA model was used to predict trends of disease burden of CC in China for the next 15 years. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, the relative percentage change in age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of CC in Chinese women was 30.91 (95% UI: -50.13 to 96.78), and the relative percentage change in age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) was -12.37 (95% UI: -63.54 to 28.52). The age-period-cohort model had different impacts on incidence and mortality rates. Overall annual percentage change (APC) (net drift) in incidence risk was 1.22 (95% CI: 0.87-1.57), and the overall APC (net drift) in mortality risk was -0.143 (95% CI: -0.38 to 0.09). The ARIMA model predicted ASIR and ASMR trends of CC for the next 15 years. CONCLUSION From 1990 to 2019, the overall incidence risk of CC in Chinese has shown an upward trend, with an earlier occurrence in the high-incidence age groups, while mortality risk showed a downward trend. It is anticipated that over the next 15 years, the incidence rate will decrease, while the mortality rate will initially rise before decreasing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, now constitute a major proportion of ill-health across most adult and older populations including in people with intellectual disability. The current paper is a comparative analysis of prevalence of NCDs across mid-aged and older-aged people with mild intellectual disability. METHOD Comparative data comes from two cross-sectional surveys using similar methodology and timeframes. The analysis sample comprises mid-aged group (30-50 years, N = 291) and older-aged group (≥60 years, N = 391). RESULTS People with mild intellectual disability start developing NCDs in early to mid-adulthood and increases with age. The mean number of NCDs in mid-aged group was 0.86 (SD, 0.84) compared to 3.82 in older group (SD, 2.67). CONCLUSION There needs to be early identification and management of NCDs using relevant health promotion and preventative measures at optimal intervention points. The training of healthcare professionals needs improvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The potential impact of environmental cadmium exposure on the prognosis of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unclear, despite its known association with various adverse health outcomes. METHODS In this study, a total of 1285 RA patients were included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2003 and 2016. The Cox regression model was employed to investigate the relationship between blood cadmium levels and the risk of all-cause mortality in RA patients. RESULTS During a mean follow-up duration of 105.9 months, 341 patient deaths were recorded. After adjusting for multiple factors, elevated blood cadmium was strongly correlated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with RA. With one unit rise in natural logarithm-transformed blood cadmium concentrations, the risk of patient death increased by 107%. The adjusted hazard ratios for each quartile of blood cadmium demonstrated a significant upward trend (P < 0.001). A linear dose-response relationship of blood cadmium concentrations with all-cause mortality was also distinctive (P < 0.001). Consistent findings were ascertained when conducting stratified analyses by age, gender, race, education level, body mass index, smoking status, and drinking status. CONCLUSIONS Elevated blood cadmium levels may serve as a risk factor for increased death risk in RA patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Migraine and severe headaches are extremely prevalent neurological disorders that plague humans and society. Prior research has revealed that DII may affect the occurrence of migraines, but there are too few relevant studies and more are required. This study aimed to determine the association between severe headache or migraine and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), with particular attention to age and gender differences. METHODS Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we performed a cross-sectional study. In addition, we investigated the association between DII and severe headache or migraine using weighted multivariate logistic regression models, and restricted cubic splines models were plotted to explore their linear correlation. RESULTS There were a total of 13,439 people participating in the study, and of those, 2745 experienced a severe headache or migraine within the previous three months. The DII was linearly and positively correlated with severe headache or migraine (odds ratio [OR] = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01-1.08, p = 0.0051). Stratified analysis showed that this relationship persisted among women and those aged < 60 years, with ORs of 1.08 (95% CI = 1.04-1.13, p = 0.0004) and 1.05 (95% CI = 1.01-1.09, p = 0.0071), respectively. CONCLUSIONS We found that greater levels of DII were significantly related to an increased likelihood of migraine onset, especially among women and young and middle-aged populations. Further research is required to validate and expand upon our results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are conflicting data on the risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Only a few previous reports include patients diagnosed during the last decade. AIM To assess and compare the risk of ACS between patients with IBD and the general population. METHODS In this cohort study, we used nationwide registers to identify patients diagnosed with IBD in Sweden 2003-2021. Every patient was matched by birth year, sex, calendar year and area of residence with up to 10 general population comparators. The primary outcome was incident ACS. We used semi-parametric Cox proportional hazard models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs). RESULTS We identified 76,517 patients with IBD (Crohn's disease [CD], N = 22,732; ulcerative colitis [UC], N = 42,194 and IBD-unclassified, N = 11,591) and 757,141 comparators. During a median follow-up of 8 years, 2546 patients with IBD (37.5/10,000 person-years) were diagnosed with ACS compared with 19,598 (28.0/10,000 person-years) among comparators (HR 1.30; 95% confidence interval 1.24-1.35) after adjustments for confounding factors, and approximately one extra case of ACS in 100 IBD patients followed for 10 years. The highest HRs for ACS were in patients with elderly onset IBD (≥60 years) and among patients with CD or UC with extra-intestinal manifestations. No increased HRs were observed in patients diagnosed with IBD before the age of 40. CONCLUSION In this contemporary cohort of patients with IBD, exposed to modern IBD care, there was an increased risk for ACS compared with individuals from the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND WHO has proposed elimination of transmission of onchocerciasis (river blindness) by 2030. More than 99% of cases of onchocerciasis are in sub-Saharan Africa. Vector control and mass drug administration of ivermectin have been the main interventions for many years, with varying success. We aimed to identify factors associated with elimination of onchocerciasis transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS For this systematic review and meta-analysis we searched for published articles reporting epidemiological or entomological assessments of onchocerciasis transmission status in sub-Saharan Africa, with or without vector control. We searched MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, African Index Medicus, and Google Scholar databases for all articles published from database inception to Aug 19, 2023, without language restrictions. The search terms used were "onchocerciasis" AND "ivermectin" AND "mass drug administration". The three inclusion criteria were (1) focus or foci located in Africa, (2) reporting of elimination of transmission or at least 10 years of ivermectin mass drug administration in the focus or foci, and (3) inclusion of at least one of the following assessments: microfilarial prevalence, nodule prevalence, Ov16 antibody seroprevalence, and blackfly infectivity prevalence. Epidemiological modelling studies and reviews were excluded. Four reviewers (NM, AJ, AM, and TNK) extracted data in duplicate from the full-text articles using a data extraction tool developed in Excel with columns recording the data of interest to be extracted, and a column where important comments for each study could be highlighted. We did not request any individual-level data from authors. Foci were classified as achieving elimination of transmission, being close to elimination of transmission, or with ongoing transmission. We used mixed-effects meta-regression models to identify factors associated with transmission status. This study is registered in PROSPERO, CRD42022338986. FINDINGS Of 1525 articles screened after the removal of duplicates, 75 provided 282 records from 238 distinct foci in 19 (70%) of the 27 onchocerciasis-endemic countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Elimination of transmission was reported in 24 (9%) records, being close to elimination of transmission in 86 (30%) records, and ongoing transmission in 172 (61%) records. I2 was 83·3% (95% CI 79·7 to 86·3). Records reporting 10 or more years of continuous mass drug administration with 80% or more therapeutic coverage of the eligible population yielded significantly higher odds of achieving elimination of transmission (log-odds 8·5 [95% CI 3·5 to 13·5]) or elimination and being close to elimination of transmission (42·4 [18·7 to 66·1]) than those with no years achieving 80% coverage or more. Reporting 15-19 years of ivermectin mass drug administration (22·7 [17·2 to 28·2]) and biannual treatment (43·3 [27·2 to 59·3]) were positively associated with elimination and being close to elimination of transmission compared with less than 15 years and no biannual mass drug administration, respectively. Having had vector control without vector elimination (-42·8 [-59·1 to -26·5]) and baseline holoendemicity (-41·97 [-60·6 to -23·2]) were associated with increased risk of ongoing transmission compared with no vector control and hypoendemicity, respectively. Blackfly disappearance due to vector control or environmental change contributed to elimination of transmission. INTERPRETATION Mass drug administration duration, frequency, and coverage; baseline endemicity; and vector elimination or disappearance are important determinants of elimination of onchocerciasis transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. Our findings underscore the importance of improving and sustaining high therapeutic coverage and increasing treatment frequency if countries are to achieve elimination of onchocerciasis transmission. Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS As the prevalence of insulin resistance and glucose intolerance is increasing throughout the world, diabetes-induced eye diseases are a global health burden. We aim to identify distinct optical bands which are closely related to insulin and glucose metabolism, using non-invasive, high-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in a large, population-based dataset. METHODS The LIFE-Adult-Study randomly selected 10,000 participants from the population registry of Leipzig, Germany. Cross-sectional, standardised phenotyping included the assessment of various metabolic risk markers and ocular imaging, such as SD-OCT-derived thicknesses of ten optical bands of the retina. Global and Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) subfield-specific optical retinal layer thicknesses were investigated in 7384 healthy eyes of 7384 participants from the LIFE-Adult-Study stratified by normal glucose tolerance, prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance and/or HbA1c 5.7-6.4% [39-47 mmol/mol]) and diabetes. The association of optical retinal band characteristics with different indices of glucose tolerance (e.g. fasting glucose, area under the glucose curve), insulin resistance (e.g. HOMA2-IR, triglyceride glucose index), or insulin sensitivity (e.g. estimated glucose disposal rate [eGDR], Stumvoll metabolic clearance rate) was determined using multivariable linear regression analyses for the individual markers adjusted for age, sex and refraction. Various sensitivity analyses were performed to validate the observed findings. RESULTS In the study cohort, nine out of ten optical bands of the retina showed significant sex- and glucose tolerance-dependent differences in band thicknesses. Multivariable linear regression analyses revealed a significant, independent, and inverse association between markers of glucose intolerance and insulin resistance (e.g. HOMA2-IR) with the thickness of the optical bands representing the anatomical retinal outer nuclear layer (ONL, standardised β=-0.096; p<0.001 for HOMA2-IR) and myoid zone (MZ; β=-0.096; p<0.001 for HOMA2-IR) of the photoreceptors. Conversely, markers of insulin sensitivity (e.g. eGDR) positively and independently associated with ONL (β=0.090; p<0.001 for eGDR) and MZ (β=0.133; p<0.001 for eGDR) band thicknesses. These global associations were confirmed in ETDRS subfield-specific analyses. Sensitivity analyses further validated our findings when physical activity, neuroanatomical cell/tissue types and ETDRS subfield categories were investigated after stratifying the cohort by glucose homeostasis. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION An impaired glucose homeostasis associates with a thinning of the optical bands of retinal ONL and photoreceptor MZ. Changes in ONL and MZ thicknesses might predict early metabolic retinal alterations in diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Otitis media is one of the most important causes of hearing loss at an early age. Effective vaccination with the routine 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) was introduced in 2000. It has been gradually replaced by the pneumococcal nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate vaccine or the higher-valent 13-valent PCV (PCV-13) since 2010. Data on the change in otitis media burden in recent years are sparse at the global, regional, and national levels. DESIGN The Global Burden of Disease 2019 study was used to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates, and the average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) in otitis media in geographic populations worldwide from 1990 to 2019. These global trends were further analyzed by subgroup (age, sex, and sociodemographic index [SDI]). RESULTS Globally, the all-age rate of prevalence (AAPC = -0.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.7 to -0.8), DALYs (AAPC = -1.0, 95% CI = -1.1 to -1.0), and mortality (AAPC = -6.8, 95% CI = -7.3 to -6.4) from otitis media decreased constantly between 1990 and 2019. The all-age rate of incidence decreased sharply between 2000 and 2009 with an AAPC of -1.2 (95% CI = -1.4 to -0.9) and continued the downward trend between 2010 and 2019 (AAPC = -0.2, 95% CI = -0.3 to -0.1). In 2019, children aged 1 to 4 years old had the highest incidence at 29,127.3 per 100,000 population, while young adults under 30 years old accounted for 91.3% of the incident cases. Individuals living in middle-SDI countries had the largest increase in the incidence of otitis media, with an AAPC of 0.3 (95% CI = 0.3 to 0.3) between 1990 and 2019. The incidence and DALYs from otitis media decreased with increasing SDI. Regionally, the largest increase in incidence was observed in high-income Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Western Sub-Saharan Africa between 1990 and 2019. Nationally, the largest increase in the incidence of otitis media was observed in the Republic of Korea, with an AAPC of 0.8 (95% CI = 0.6 to 1.1) in the same time period. CONCLUSIONS There have been successful previous endeavors to reduce DALYs and mortality attributed to otitis media on a global scale. The worldwide incidence of otitis media experienced a sharp decline following the introduction of PCV-7 in 2000, and this downward trend persisted in subsequent years with the adoption of PCV-13/pneumococcal nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate vaccine. Continual epidemiological surveillance of otitis media's global trends, pathogen distribution, and resistance patterns remains imperative.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality has declined substantially in the United Kingdom (UK) in recent decades, but the continued relevance of conventional risk factors for prediction of CVD mortality throughout the life-course is uncertain. We compared the 10-year risks and lifetime risks of CVD mortality associated with conventional risk factors recorded in middle and old age. METHODS The Whitehall study was a prospective study of 19,019 male London civil servants (mean age 52 years) when enrolled in 1967-1970 and followed-up for 50 years for cause-specific mortality. In 1997, 7044 (83%) survivors (mean age 77 years) were re-surveyed. The 10-year and lifetime risks of CVD mortality were estimated by levels of CVD risk factors recorded in middle-age and old-age, respectively. RESULTS By July 2020, 97% had died (22%, 51% and 80% before age 70, 80 and 90 years, respectively) and 7944 of 17,673 deaths (45%) were from CVD. The 10-year and lifetime risks of CVD death increased linearly with higher levels of CVD risk factors recorded in middle-age and in old-age. Individuals in the top versus bottom 5% of CVD risk scores in middle age had a 10.3% (95% CI:7.2-13.4) vs 0.6% (0.1-1.2) 10-year risk of CVD mortality, a 61.4% (59.4-65.3) vs 31.3% (24.1-34.5) lifetime risk of CVD mortality and a 12-year difference in life expectancy from age 50 years. The corresponding differences using a CVD risk score in old-age were 11.0% (4.4-17.5) vs 0.8% (0.0-2.2) for 10-year risk and 42.1% (28.2-50.0) vs 30.3% (6.0-38.0) for lifetime risk of CVD mortality and a 6-year difference in life expectancy from age 70 years. CONCLUSIONS Conventional risk factors remained highly predictive of CVD mortality and life expectancy through the life-course. The findings highlight the relevance of estimation of both lifetime risks of CVD and 10-year risks of CVD for primary prevention of CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance is one of the most frequent somatic symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD), but the neural mechanisms behind it are not well understood. Sleep efficiency (SE) is a good indicator of early awakening and difficulty falling asleep in MDD patients. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep efficiency and brain function in MDD patients. METHODS We recruited 131 MDD patients from the Fourth People's Hospital in Hefei, and 71 well-matched healthy controls who were enrolled from the community. All subjects underwent resting-state functional MRI. Brain function was measured using the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), sleep efficiency was objectively measured by polysomnography (PSG), and clinical scales were used to evaluate depressive symptoms and sleep status. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between the amplitude of the low frequency fluctuation fraction and sleep efficiency. RESULT Three brain regions with relevance to sleep efficiency in MDD patients were found: inferior occipital gyrus (Number of voxels = 25, peak MNI coordinate x/y/z = -42/-81/-6, Peak intensity = 4.3148), middle occipital gyrus (Number of voxels = 55, peak MNI coordinate x/y/z = -30/-78/18, Peak intensity = 5.111), and postcentral gyrus (Number of voxels = 26, peak MNI coordinate x/y/z = -27/-33/60, Peak intensity = 4.1263). But there was no significant relationship between fALFF and SE in the healthy controls. CONCLUSION The reduced sleep efficiency in MDD may be related to their lower neural activity in the inferior occipital gyrus, middle occipital gyrus, and postcentral gyrus. The findings may provide a potential neuroimaging basis for the clinical intervention in patients with major depressive disorder with sleep disturbances.

Abstract
Falls from height pose a significant public health concern in urban regions, including the highly urbanized Greater Tokyo Area. The Japanese population is characterized by high rates of suicide and psychoactive drug usage, underscoring the importance of investigating these attributes in falls from height. This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the alcohol and toxicological aspects influencing falls from height in the Greater Tokyo Area between 2014 and 2022 and compare the findings with existing reports on other populations. In total, 75 cases of falls from height and 159 cases of natural deaths were included. Consistent with previous findings, Fisher's exact test revealed a predominance of males (66.67%, 50/75) and young adults (57.33%, 43/75) in falls from height. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified antidepressant usage as the most significant risk factor within the target population, while younger individuals under alcohol influence constituted another high-risk group. Notably, contradictory to other populations, female individuals involved in fatal falls in the Greater Tokyo Area exhibited a higher frequency of alcohol consumption than males (48.00%, 12/25 vs. 26.00%, 13/50), and most of them were associated with suicide (83.33%, 10/12). These findings elucidate the population characteristics that pose a high risk for fatal falls from height in Japan and can serve as a reference for other Asian populations residing in similar megacities.

Abstract
Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Exposure to allergens produced by a variety of otherwise harmless microbes, including fungi, predisposes individuals to immunopathologic disease upon subsequent encounters with allergen. We developed a mouse model that employs a purified protease produced by Aspergillus (Asp f 13) to investigate the contributions of CD4+ Th cells to recurrent lung inflammation. Notably, memory CD4+ T cells enhanced the eosinophil response of sensitized/rechallenged animals. In addition, memory CD4+ T cells maintained allergenic features, including expression of GATA-binding protein 3 and IL-5. Th2 memory T cells persisted in the peribronchiolar interstitium of the lung and expressed markers of tissue residence, such as CD69, CCR8, and IL-33R. Lastly, we identified a peptide epitope contained within Asp f 13 and generated a peptide-MHC class II tetramer. Using these tools, we further demonstrated the durability and exquisite sensitivity of memory T cells in promoting lung eosinophilia. Our data highlight important features of memory T cells that strengthen the notion that memory T cells are principal drivers of eosinophilic disease in murine models of allergic sensitization and episodic airway inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of our study was to assess the multiscalar changes in leprosy burden and its associated risk factors over the last three decades. STUDY DESIGN We conducted an in-depth examination of leprosy's spatial-temporal trends at multiple geographical scale (global, regional, and national), utilizing information from Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD 2019). METHODS Incidence and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) in age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of leprosy were determined, with countries categorized based on leprosy incidence changes. We examined socioeconomic and physical geography influences on leprosy incidence via Spearman correlation analysis, using ternary phase diagrams to reveal the synergetic effects on leprosy occurrence. RESULTS Globally, incident cases of leprosy decreased by 27.86% from 1990 to 2019, with a reduction in ASIR (EAPC = -2.53), yet trends were not homogeneous across regions. ASIR and EAPC correlated positively with sociodemographic index (SDI), and an ASIR growth appeared in high SDI region (EAPC = 3.07). Leprosy burden was chiefly distributed in Tropical Latin America, Oceania, Central Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia. Negative correlations were detected between the incidence of leprosy and factors of SDI, GDP per capita, urban population to total population, and precipitation, whereas the number of refugee population, temperature, and elevation showed opposite positive results. CONCLUSIONS Despite a global decline in leprosy over the past three decades, the disparities of disease occurrence at regional and national scales still persisted. Socioeconomic and physical geographic factors posed an obvious influence on the transmission risk of leprosy. The persistence and regional fluctuations of leprosy incidence necessitate the ongoing dynamic and multilayered control strategies worldwide in combating this ancient disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ambient particulate matter (PM) has been recognized as inducing oxidative stress, which could contribute to mitochondrial damage and dysfunction. However, studies investigating the association between ambient PM and mitochondria, particularly mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN), have yielded inconsistent results. METHODS We conducted comprehensive literature searches to identify observational studies published before July 17, 2023, examining the association between ambient PM exposure and mtDNA-CN. Meta-analysis using random effects model was employed to calculate the pooled effect estimates for general individual exposures, as well as for prenatal exposure with specific trimester. Additionally, the quality and level of evidence for each exposure-outcome pair was evaluated. RESULTS A total of 10 studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The results indicated that general individual exposure to PM2.5 (β = -0.084, 95 % CI: -0.521, 0.353; I2 = 93 %) and PM10 (β = 0.035, 95 % CI: -0.129, 0.199; I2 = 95 %) did not significantly affect mtDNA-CN. Prenatal exposure to PM2.5 (β = 0.023, 95 % CI: -0.087, 0.133; I2 = 0 %) and PM10 (β = 0.006, 95 % CI: -0.135; 0.147; I2 = 51 %) were also not significantly associated with mtDNA-CN in offspring. The level of evidence for each tested exposure-outcome pair was assessed as "inadequate." CONCLUSIONS The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis indicate that there is an "inadequate" strength of evidence for the association between general individual or prenatal exposure to ambient PM and mtDNA-CN. Future research necessitates studies with more rigorous design, enhanced control of confounding factors, and improved measures of exposure to substantiate our findings.

Abstract
Hypertension and dyslipidemia are 2 highly prevalent and modifiable risk factors in patients with stable ischemic heart disease. Multiple lines of evidence demonstrate that lowering blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol improves clinical outcomes in patients with ischemic heart disease. Accordingly, clinical guidelines recommend intensive treatment targets for these high-risk patients. This article summarizes the pathophysiology, supporting evidence, and treatment recommendations for management of hypertension and dyslipidemia among patients with manifest ischemic heart disease and points to future research and unmet clinical needs.

Abstract
Objectives Abdominal obesity is recognized as a significant determinant of Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), with sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) being considered a more precise indicator of visceral fat. Nevertheless, the association between SAD and ASCVD remains unexplored in large-scale general-population studies. Methods The study included 11,211 participants aged 20 to 80 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Logistic regression models were utilized to evaluate the association between the SAD-to-height ratio (SADHtR) and ASCVD. Subgroup analyses based on age categories, sex, diabetes, and hypertension were conducted to assess result robustness. Results The median SADHtR value was 0.13 (0.12-0.15), and 1,006 cases (7.46 %) of ASCVD were recorded. Multivariable models showed that each standard deviation increase in SADHtR was positively associated with higher odds of ASCVD (OR 1.48, 95 % CI 1.36-1.62 in model 1; OR 1.41, 95 % CI 1.28-1.54 in model 2; OR 1.18, 95 % CI 1.08-1.30 in model 3). Comparing the first quartile of SADHtR to the second to fourth quartiles, positive associations with ASCVD were observed in models 1 and 2. However, in model 3, only the fourth quartile of SADHtR remained statistically significant (OR 1.58, 95 % CI 1.17-2.15), with all p-values for the trend being less than 0.05. No interactions were found in the subgroup analyses. Conclusion This study demonstrates a positive association between SADHtR and ASCVD in the general adult population of the United States. Our findings indicate that SADHtR, especially when ≥ 0.155, could be a valuable metric for assessing the risk of ASCVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive disorder is a severe global public health problem. It is crucial to evaluate the global incidence trends of depressive disorder. METHODS The incidence data were drawn from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019. Estimates were presented by global and sociodemographic index (SDI) quintiles, and the age-period-cohort (APC) model was used to estimate the incidence trends. RESULTS APC analysis indicated a decline in depressive disorder incidence globally (net drift = -0.24%, 95%CI: -0.29, -0.18), except for an increase in SDI regions (net drift = 0.07, 95%CI:0, 0.14). In high SDI regions, depressive disorder incidence increased among the younger and declined among the elder population, whereas the opposite trend was observed in middle and low-middle SDI regions. The depressive disorder incidence increased significantly among people aged 15 to 24 years after adjusting for age effects, decreased since 2000 after adjusting for period effects and increased rapidly in the birth cohort after 1990 in high SDI by adjusting for cohort effects. CONCLUSION Globally, there was a declining trend of depressive disorder incidence in 1990-2019. Specifically, the incidence was declining globally in younger populations, while increasing in older populations. However, this trend differed depending on the SDI of the region.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study employed time series data to assess long-term changes in the burden of lung cancer (LC) caused by residential radon exposure, an important environmental risk factor, so as to develop evidence-based strategies for future public health management. METHODS Based on the open data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD 2019) database, we conducted an analysis of the residential radon exposure-caused LC mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and corresponding crude rates and age-standardized rates (ASRs) for various age groups. We employed the employed age-period-cohort (APC) model to investigate the age, period, and cohort effects of the data, allowing us to discern the trends in LC disease burden attributable to radon exposure in residential settings over time. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and age-standardized DALYs rates of LC caused by residential radon exposure in China demonstrated an overall increasing trend, with males higher than females. The CMR and crude DALYs rate for males were higher than those for females across all age groups. The APC analysis revealed that the local drift of LC death and DALYs rates in males and females showed a decreasing trend before 60 and an increasing trend after 60. CONCLUSION The persistent presence of residential radon exposure as a crucial risk factor for LC underscores the need for public health authorities and policymakers to take more proactive measures to reduce radon exposure. Particularly, attention should be paid on the elderly population and male patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Expanding universal health coverage (UHC) might not be inherently beneficial to poorer populations without the explicit targeting and prioritising of low-income populations. This study examines whether the expansion of UHC between 2000 and 2019 is associated with reduced socioeconomic inequalities in infant mortality in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS We did a retrospective analysis of birth data compiled from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs). We analysed all births between 2000 and 2019 from all DHSs available for this period. The primary outcome was infant mortality, defined as death within 1 year of birth. Logistic regression models with country and year fixed effects assessed associations between country-level progress to UHC (using WHO's UHC service coverage index) and infant mortality (overall and by wealth quintile), adjusting for infant-level, mother-level, and country-level variables. FINDINGS A total of 4 065 868 births to 1 833 011 mothers were analysed from 177 DHSs covering 60 LMICs between 2000 and 2019. A one unit increase in the UHC index was associated with a 1·2% reduction in the risk of infant death (AOR 0·988, 95% CI 0·981-0·995; absolute measure of association, 0·57 deaths per 1000 livebirths). An estimated 15·5 million infant deaths were averted between 2000 and 2019 because of increases in UHC. However, richer wealth quintiles had larger associated reductions in infant mortality from UHC (quintile 5 AOR 0·983, 95% CI 0·973-0·993) than poorer quintiles (quintile 1 0·991, 0·985-0·998). In the early stages of UHC, UHC expansion was generally beneficial to poorer populations (ie, larger reductions in infant mortality for poorer households [infant deaths per 1000 per one unit increase in UHC coverage: quintile 1 0·84 vs quintile 5 0·59]), but became less so as overall coverage increased (quintile 1 0·64 vs quintile 5 0·57). INTERPRETATION Since UHC expansion in LMICs appears to become less beneficial to poorer populations as coverage increases, UHC policies should be explicitly designed to ensure lower income groups continue to benefit as coverage expands. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Heart failure (HF) is on the rise as a global health problem, but information on its burden in Asia is limited. This study aimed to assess the burden, trends, and underlying causes of HF in the Asian region. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Data on HF in Asia from 1990 to 2019, including prevalence, years lived with disability (YLD), and underlying causes, were extracted from the Global Burden of Diseases 2019. The cases, the age-standardized prevalence, and the YLD were compared between the age groups, the sexes, the sociodemographic index, and the locations. The proportion of age-standardized prevalence rates of HF attributable to 16 underlying causes was also analyzed. RESULTS In 2019, the age-standardized prevalence rate of HF per 100,000 persons in Asia was 722.45 (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 591.97-891.64), with an estimated 31.89 million cases (95% UI: 25.94-39.25). From 1990 to 2019, the prevalence of age-standardized HF in Asia decreased by 4.51%, reflecting the global trend (-7.06%). Age-standardized YLD rates of HF exhibited patterns similar to prevalence rates. Among Asian countries, China had the highest age-standardized prevalence rate, followed by Kuwait and Jordan. Hypertensive heart disease was the leading cause of HF, followed by ischemic heart disease and rheumatic heart disease. CONCLUSIONS Although the burden of HF in Asia showed a gradual decline between 1990 and 2019, it remains a significant health challenge that requires increased attention. Regional disparities in HF burden are evident, emphasizing the need for urgent prevention and control measures at the regional and national levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS The study aimed to analyze epidemiology burden of male prostate cancer across the BRICS-plus, and identify potential risk factors by assessing the associations with age, period, birth cohorts and sociodemographic index (SDI). METHODS Data were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) was calculated to assess long-term trends, and age-period-cohort analysis was used to analyze these three effects on prostate cancer burden. Quantile regression was used to investigate the association between SDI and health outcomes. RESULTS The higher incidence and mortality were observed in Mercosur and SACU regions, increasing trends were observed in prostate cancer incidence in almost all BRICS-plus countries (AAPC > 0), and EEU's grew by 24.31% (%AAPC range: -0.13-3.03). Mortality had increased in more than half of countries (AAPC > 0), and SACU grew by 1.82% (%AAPC range: 0.62-1.75). Incidence and mortality risk sharply increased with age across all BRICS-plus countries and globally, and the peak was reached in the age group 80-84 years. Rate ratio (RR) of incidence increased with birth cohorts in all BRICS-plus countries except for Kazakhstan where slightly decrease, while mortality RR decreased with birth cohort in most of BRICS-plus countries. SDI presented significantly positive associations with incidence in 50 percentiles. The deaths attributable to smoking declined in most of BRICS-plus nations, and many countries in China-ASEAN-FTA and EEU had higher values. CONCLUSION Prostate cancer posed a serious public health challenge with an increasing burden among most of BRICS-plus countries. Age had significant effects on prostate cancer burden, and recent birth cohorts suffered from higher incidence risk. SDI presented a positive relationship with incidence, and the smoking-attributable burden was tremendous in China-ASEAN-FTA and EEU region. Secondary prevention should be prioritized in BRICS-plus nations, and health policies targeting important populations should be strengthened based on their characteristics and adaptability.
