Ionic liquids: environmentally sustainable materials for energy conversion and storage applications

Ionic liquids (ILs), often known as green designer solvents, have demonstrated immense application potential in numerous scientific and technological domains. ILs possess high boiling point and low volatility that make them suitable environmentally benign candidates for many potential applications. The more important aspect associated with ILs is that their physicochemical properties can be effectively changed for desired applications just by tuning the structure of the cationic and/or anionic part of ILs. Furthermore, these eco-friendly designer materials can function as electrolytes or solvents depending on the application. Owing to the distinctive properties such as low volatility, high thermal and electrochemical stability, and better ionic conductivity, ILs are nowadays immensely used in a variety of energy applications, particularly in the development of green and sustainable energy storage and conversion devices. Suitable ILs are designed for specific purposes to be used as electrolytes and/or solvents for fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors (SCs), and solar cells. Herein, we have highlighted the utilization of ILs as unique green designer materials in Li-batteries, fuel cells, SCs, and solar cells. This review will enlighten the promising prospects of these unique, environmentally sustainable materials for next-generation green energy conversion and storage devices. Ionic liquids have much to offer in the field of energy sciences regarding fixing some of the world's most serious issues. However, most of the discoveries discussed in this review article are still at the laboratory research scale for further development. This review article will inspire researchers and readers about how ILs can be effectively applied in energy sectors for various applications as mentioned above.

Multiple synergies on cobalt-based spinel oxide nanowires for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Cobalt-based spinel oxides have excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities and are cheap to produce; however, they have limited commercial applications due to their poor electrical conductivities and weak stabilities. Herein, we soaked Co3-xNixO4 nanowires in NaBH4 solutions, which endowed Co3-xNixO4 with significant oxygen vacancy content and decorated BOx motifs outside the Co3-xNixO4 nanowires. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman data suggest that these evolutions improved the conductivity, hydrophilicity, and increased active sites of the spinel oxides, which synergistically boosted their overall OER performances. This improved performance made the optimized BOx-covered Co2.1Ni0.9O4 nanowires generate a current density of 10 mA cm-2 when used for the OER at an overpotential of only 307 mV, maintaining excellent stability at 50 mA cm-2 for 24 h. This study provides a facile method for designing cobalt-based spinel oxide OER catalysts.

Anchoring π-d Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks with Dual-Active Centers on Carbon Nanotubes for Advanced Potassium-Ion Batteries

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are gradually gaining attention owing to their natural abundance, excellent security, and high energy density. However, developing excellent organic cathode materials for PIBs to overcome the poor cycling stability and slow kinetics caused by the large radii of K+ ions is challenging. This study demonstrates for the first time the application of a hexaazanonaphthalene (HATN)-based 2D π-d conjugated metal-organic framework (2D c-MOF) with dual-active centers (Cu-HATNH) and integrates Cu-HATNH with carbon nanotubes (Cu-HATNH@CNT) as the cathode material for PIBs. Owing to this systematic module integration and more exposed active sites with high utilization, Cu-HATNH@CNT exhibits a high initial capacity (317.5 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 ), excellent long-term cycling stability (capacity retention of 96.8% at 5 A g-1 after 2200 cycles), and outstanding rate capacity (147.1 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1 ). The reaction mechanism and performance are determined by combining experimental characterization and density functional theory calculations. This contribution provides new opportunities for designing high-performance 2D c-MOF cathodes with multiple active sites for PIBs.

Recent synthetic strategies of small heterocyclic organic molecules with optoelectronic applications: a review

Over the past few years, there have been tremendous developments in the design and synthesis of organic optoelectronic materials with appealing applications in device fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes, superconductors, organic lasers, organic field-effect transistors, clean energy-producing organic solar cells, etc. There is an increasing demand for the synthesis of green, highly efficient organic optoelectronic materials to cope with the issue of efficiency roll-off in organic semiconductor-based devices. This review systematically summarized the recent progress in the design and synthesis of small organic molecules having promising optoelectronic properties for their potential applications in optoelectronic devices during the last 10-year range (2010-early 2021).

Unraveling the Degradation Pathway of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells Based on ISOS-D-1 Protocol

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have shown rapid development recently, whereas nonideal stability remains the chief obstacle toward commercialization. Thus, it is of utmost importance to probe the degradation pathway for the entire device. Here, the extrinsic stability of inverted PSCs (IPSCs) is investigated by using standard shelf-life testing based on the International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability protocols (ISOS-D-1). During the long-term assessment of 1700 h, the degraded power conversion efficiency is mainly caused by the fill factor (53% retention) and short-circuit current density (71% retention), while the open-circuit voltage still maintains 97% of the initial values. Further absorbance evolution and density functional theory calculations disclose that the perovskite rear-contact side, in particular for the perovskite/fullerene interface, is the predominant degradation pathway. This study contributes to understanding the aging mechanism and enhancing the durability of IPSCs for future applications.

Recent Progress of Low-Toxicity Poor-Lead All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved an impressive certified efficiency of 25.7%, which is comparatively higher than that of commercial silicon solar cells (23.3%), showing great potential toward commercialization. However, the low stability and high toxicity due to the presence of volatile organic components and toxic metal lead in the perovskites pose significant challenges. To obtain robust and low-toxicity PSCs, substituting organic cations with pure inorganic cations, and partially or fully replacing the toxic Pb with environmentally benign metals, is one of the promising methods. To date, continuous efforts have been made toward the construction of highly performed low-toxicity inorganic PSCs with astonishing breakthroughs. This review article provides an overview of recent progress in inorganic PSCs in terms of lead-reduced and lead-free compositions. The physical properties of poor-lead all-inorganic perovskites are discussed to unveil the major challenges in this field. Then, it reports notable achievements for the experimental studies to date to figure out feasible methods for efficient and stable poor-lead all-inorganic PSCs. Finally, a discussion of the challenges and prospects for poor-lead all-inorganic PSCs in the future is presented.

Water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): rational construction and carbon dioxide capture

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be a promising porous material due to their excellent porosity and chemical tailorability. However, due to the relatively weak strength of coordination bonds, the stability (e.g., water stability) of MOFs is usually poor, which severely inhibits their practical applications. To prepare water-stable MOFs, several important strategies such as increasing the bonding strength of building units and introducing hydrophobic units have been proposed, and many MOFs with excellent water stability have been prepared. Carbon dioxide not only causes a range of climate and health problems but also is a by-product of some important chemicals (e.g., natural gas). Due to their excellent adsorption performances, MOFs are considered as a promising adsorbent that can capture carbon dioxide efficiently and energetically, and many water-stable MOFs have been used to capture carbon dioxide in various scenarios, including flue gas decarbonization, direct air capture, and purified crude natural gas. In this review, we first introduce the design and synthesis of water-stable MOFs and then describe their applications in carbon dioxide capture, and finally provide some personal comments on the challenges facing these areas.

Defect passivation in methylammonium/bromine free inverted perovskite solar cells using charge-modulated molecular bonding

Molecular passivation is a prominent approach for improving the performance and operation stability of halide perovskite solar cells (HPSCs). Herein, we reveal discernible effects of diammonium molecules with either an aryl or alkyl core onto Methylammonium-free perovskites. Piperazine dihydriodide (PZDI), characterized by an alkyl core-electron cloud-rich-NH terminal, proves effective in mitigating surface and bulk defects and modifying surface chemistry or interfacial energy band, ultimately leading to improved carrier extraction. Benefiting from superior PZDI passivation, the device achieves an impressive efficiency of 23.17% (area ~1 cm2) (low open circuit voltage deficit ~0.327 V) along with superior operational stability. We achieve a certified efficiency of ~21.47% (area ~1.024 cm2) for inverted HPSC. PZDI strengthens adhesion to the perovskite via -NH2I and Mulliken charge distribution. Device analysis corroborates that stronger bonding interaction attenuates the defect densities and suppresses ion migration. This work underscores the crucial role of bifunctional molecules with stronger surface adsorption in defect mitigation, setting the stage for the design of charge-regulated molecular passivation to enhance the performance and stability of HPSC.

Catalytic carbon-carbon bond cleavage in lignin via manganese-zirconium-mediated autoxidation

Efforts to produce aromatic monomers through catalytic lignin depolymerization have historically focused on aryl-ether bond cleavage. A large fraction of aromatic monomers in lignin, however, are linked by various carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds that are more challenging to cleave and limit the yields of aromatic monomers from lignin depolymerization. Here, we report a catalytic autoxidation method to cleave C-C bonds in lignin-derived dimers and oligomers from pine and poplar. The method uses manganese and zirconium salts as catalysts in acetic acid and produces aromatic carboxylic acids as primary products. The mixtures of the oxygenated monomers are efficiently converted to cis,cis-muconic acid in an engineered strain of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 that conducts aromatic O-demethylation reactions at the 4-position. This work demonstrates that autoxidation of lignin with Mn and Zr offers a catalytic strategy to increase the yield of valuable aromatic monomers from lignin.

Boosting the Performances of Semitransparent Organic Photovoltaics via Synergetic Near-Infrared Light Management

Semitransparent organic photovoltaics (ST-OPVs) offer promising prospects for application in building-integrated photovoltaic systems and greenhouses, but further improvement of their performance faces a delicate trade-off between the two competing indexes of power conversion efficiency (PCE) and average visible transmittance (AVT). Herein, the authors take advantage of coupling plasmonics with the optical design of ST-OPVs to enhance near-infrared absorption and hence simultaneously improve efficiency and visible transparency to the maximum extent. By integrating core-bishell PdCu@Au@SiO2 nanotripods that act as optically isotropic Lambertian sources with near-infrared-customized localized surface plasmon resonance in an optimal ternary PM6:BTP-eC9:L8-BO-based ST-OPV, it is shown that their interplay with a multilayer optical coupling layer, consisting of ZnS(130 nm)/Na3 AlF6 (60 nm)/WO3 (100 nm)/LaF3 (50 nm) identified from high-throughput optical screening, leads to a record-high PCE of 16.14% (certified as 15.90%) along with an excellent AVT of 33.02%. The strong enhancement of the light utilization efficiency by ≈50% as compared to the counterpart device without optical engineering provides an encouraging and universal pathway for promoting breakthroughs in ST-OPVs from meticulous optical design.

Unraveling radiation damage and healing mechanisms in halide perovskites using energy-tuned dual irradiation dosing

Perovskite photovoltaics have been shown to recover, or heal, after radiation damage. Here, we deconvolve the effects of radiation based on different energy loss mechanisms from incident protons which induce defects or can promote efficiency recovery. We design a dual dose experiment first exposing devices to low-energy protons efficient in creating atomic displacements. Devices are then irradiated with high-energy protons that interact differently. Correlated with modeling, high-energy protons (with increased ionizing energy loss component) effectively anneal the initial radiation damage, and recover the device efficiency, thus directly detailing the different interactions of irradiation. We relate these differences to the energy loss (ionization or non-ionization) using simulation. Dual dose experiments provide insight into understanding the radiation response of perovskite solar cells and highlight that radiation-matter interactions in soft lattice materials are distinct from conventional semiconductors. These results present electronic ionization as a unique handle to remedying defects and trap states in perovskites.

Novel Strategy for High Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells through Atomic Layer Deposition

The perovskite material has demonstrated conceivable potential as an absorbing material of solar cells. Although the power conversion efficiency of the device based on perovskite has rapidly come to 26%, there are still many factors that affect the further improvement of the photoelectric conversion efficiency. Interface defects are the dominating concern that influence carrier transportation and stability. Here, we report a novel strategy where B2O3 is deposited on the fresh perovskite film by atomic layer deposition technology. The organic atmosphere during atomic layer deposition can effectively regulate the crystallization kinetics of perovskites and promote crystal growth. The B2O3 adsorbed on the perovskite light-absorption layer can effectively reduce the electropositive defects on the surface of the perovskite, such as uncoordinated Pb2+ and I vacancies due to the electron-donating properties of the side O atoms in B2O3. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency of the perovskite solar cell after B2O3 treatment increases to 21.78% from 18.89%. Simultaneously, B2O3 can improve the stability of devices.

Nanocatalysis MoS2/rGO: An Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

In this study, a systematic investigation of MoS2 nanostructure growth on a SiO2 substrate was conducted using a two-stage process. Initially, a thin layer of Mo was grown through sputtering, followed by a sulfurization process employing the CVD technique. This two-stage process enables the control of diverse nanostructure formations of both MoS2 and MoO3 on SiO2 substrates, as well as the formation of bulk-like grain structures. Subsequently, the addition of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was examined, resulting in MoS2/rGO(n), where graphene is uniformly deposited on the surface, exposing a higher number of active sites at the edges and consequently enhancing electroactivity in the HER. The influence of the synthesis time on the treated MoS2 and also MoS2/rGO(n) samples is evident in their excellent electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential.

Sequential catalytic lignin valorization and bioethanol production: an integrated biorefinery strategy

BACKGROUND

The effective valorization of lignin and carbohydrates in lignocellulose matrix under the concept of biorefinery is a primary strategy to produce sustainable chemicals and fuels. Based on the reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF), lignin in lignocelluloses can be depolymerized into viscous oils, while the highly delignified pulps with high polysaccharides retention can be transformed into various chemicals.

RESULTS

A biorefinery paradigm for sequentially valorization of the main components in poplar sawdust was constructed. In this process, the well-defined low-molecular-weight phenols and bioethanol were co-generated by tandem chemo-catalysis in the RCF stage and bio-catalysis in fermentation stage. In the RCF stage, hydrogen transfer reactions were conducted in one-pot process using Raney Ni as catalyst, while the isopropanol (2-PrOH) in the initial liquor was served as a hydrogen donor and the solvent for lignin dissolution. Results indicated the proportion of the 2-PrOH in the initial liquor of RCF influenced the chemical constitution and yield of the lignin oil, which also affected the characteristics of the pulps and the following bioethanol production. A 67.48 ± 0.44% delignification with 20.65 ± 0.31% of monolignols yield were realized when the 2-PrOH:H2O ratio in initial liquor was 7:3 (6.67 wt% of the catalyst loading, 200 °C for 3 h). The RCF pulp had higher carbohydrates retention (57.96 ± 2.78 wt%), which was converted to 21.61 ± 0.62 g/L of bioethanol with a yield of 0.429 ± 0.010 g/g in fermentation using an engineered S. cerevisiae strain. Based on the mass balance analysis, 104.4 g of ethanol and 206.5 g of lignin oil can be produced from 1000 g of the raw poplar sawdust.

CONCLUSIONS

The main chemical components in poplar sawdust can be effectively transformed into lignin oil and bioethanol. The attractive results from the biorefinery process exhibit great promise for the production of valuable biofuels and chemicals from abundant lignocellulosic materials.

A Critical Analysis of Chemical and Electrochemical Oxidation Mechanisms in Li-Ion Batteries

Electrolyte decomposition limits the lifetime of commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and slows the adoption of next-generation energy storage technologies. A fundamental understanding of electrolyte degradation is critical to rationally design stable and energy-dense LIBs. To date, most explanations for electrolyte decomposition at LIB positive electrodes have relied on ethylene carbonate (EC) being chemically oxidized by evolved singlet oxygen (1O2) or electrochemically oxidized. In this work, we apply density functional theory to assess the feasibility of these mechanisms. We find that electrochemical oxidation is unfavorable at any potential reached during normal LIB operation, and we predict that previously reported reactions between the EC and 1O2 are kinetically limited at room temperature. Our calculations suggest an alternative mechanism in which EC reacts with superoxide (O2-) and/or peroxide (O22-) anions. This work provides a new perspective on LIB electrolyte decomposition and motivates further studies to understand the reactivity at positive electrodes.

Uncovering the Dynamics of Urease and Carbonic Anhydrase Genes in Ureolysis, Carbon Dioxide Hydration, and Calcium Carbonate Precipitation

The hydration of CO2 suffers from kinetic inefficiencies that make its natural trapping impractically sluggish. However, CO2-fixing carbonic anhydrases (CAs) remarkably accelerate its equilibration by 6 orders of magnitude and are, therefore, "ideal" catalysts. Notably, CA has been detected in ureolytic bacteria, suggesting its potential involvement in microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), yet the dynamics of the urease (Ur) and CA genes remain poorly understood. Here, through the use of the ureolytic bacteriumSporosarcina pasteurii, we investigate the differing role of Ur and CA in ureolysis, CO2 hydration, and CaCO3 precipitation with increasing CO2(g) concentrations. We show that Ur gene up-regulation coincides with an increase in [HCO3-] following the hydration of CO2 to HCO3- by CA. Hence, CA physiologically promotes buffering, which enhances solubility trapping and affects the phase of the CaCO3 mineral formed. Understanding the role of CO2 hydration on the performance of ureolysis and CaCO3 precipitation provides essential new insights, required for the development of next-generation biocatalyzed CO2 trapping technologies.

Optoelectronic synapses based on a triple cation perovskite and Al/MoO3 interface for neuromorphic information processing

Optoelectronic synaptic transistors are attractive for applications in next-generation brain-like computation systems, especially for their visible-light operation and in-sensor computing capabilities. However, from a material perspective, it is difficult to build a device that meets expectations in terms of both its functions and power consumption, prompting the call for greater innovation in materials and device construction. In this study, we innovatively combined a novel perovskite carrier supply layer with an Al/MoO3 interface carrier regulatory layer to fabricate optoelectronic synaptic devices, namely Al/MoO3/CsFAMA/ITO transistors. The device could mimic a variety of biological synaptic functions and required ultralow-power consumption during operation with an ultrafast speed of >0.1 μs under an optical stimulus of about 3 fJ, which is equivalent to biological synapses. Moreover, Pavlovian conditioning and visual perception tasks could be implemented using the spike-number-dependent plasticity (SNDP) and spike-rate-dependent plasticity (SRDP). This study suggests that the proposed CsFAMA synapse with an Al/MoO3 interface has the potential for ultralow-power neuromorphic information processing.

Green Anisole as Antisolvent in Planar Triple-Cation Perovskite Solar Cells with Varying Cesium Concentrations

The feasibility of replacing toxic chlorobenzene antisolvents with environmentally friendly anisole in the fabrication of planar triple-cation perovskite solar cells was explored here. The successful integration of anisole not only ensures comparable device performance but also contributes to the development of more sustainable and green fabrication processes for next-generation photovoltaic technologies. Nevertheless, to ensure the possibility of achieving well-functioning unencapsulated devices whose working operation depends on outdoor atmospheric conditions, we found that adjusting the cesium concentrations in the perovskite layers enabled the electrical characterization of efficient devices even under high relative humidity conditions (more than 40%). We found that 10% of CsI in the precursor solution will make devices with low hysteresis indexes and sustained performance stability over a 90-day period both with cholorobenzene and anisole antisolvent. These results further confirm that green anisole can replace chlorobenzene as an antisolvent.

Thermal-hydraulic characteristics of nitric acid: An experimental and numerical analysis

Nitric acid is one of the most important products in the chemical industry, ranking third globally in terms of acid production. Although nitric acid has many industrial applications, its primary function is the production of ammonium nitrate, which is used in the fertilizer industry. In this report, we propose a plan for an Ostwald process plant that will produce 1000 metric tons of nitric acid per day. Based on an effective energy analysis, we have concluded that using a single pressure method provides optimal results. First, ammonia is vaporized using process heat at 1000 kPa and 35 °C before being superheated using steam to a temperature of 80 °C. Filtered air is compressed by an axial compressor to a discharge pressure of approximately 740 kPa and a temperature of 155 °C. After conducting a site evaluation, three existing manufacturing sites are being considered for the acid production plant: Ogun State (Nigeria), Gwadar Seaport (Pakistan), and Ras-Alkhair Seaport (Saudi Arabia). Based on the results of the site assessment, Ras-Alkhair has been selected as the most suitable location for the nitric acid plant. About 65 % of all nitric acid produced worldwide is used in the production of ammonium nitrate, which is in turn used in the fertilizer and explosives industries. The synthetic nitric acid that will be produced from this plant will be used in the production of fertilizers.

Bacteriophages: Status quo and emerging trends toward one health approach

The alarming rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among the drug-resistant pathogens has been attributed to the ESKAPEE group (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter sp., and Escherichia coli). Recently, these AMR microbes have become difficult to treat, as they have rendered the existing therapeutics ineffective. Thus, there is an urgent need for effective alternatives to lessen or eliminate the current infections and limit the spread of emerging diseases under the "One Health" framework. Bacteriophages (phages) are naturally occurring biological resources with extraordinary potential for biomedical, agriculture/food safety, environmental protection, and energy production. Specific unique properties of phages, such as their bactericidal activity, host specificity, potency, and biocompatibility, make them desirable candidates in therapeutics. The recent biotechnological advancement has broadened the repertoire of phage applications in nanoscience, material science, physical chemistry, and soft-matter research. Herein, we present a comprehensive review, coupling the substantial aspects of phages with their applicability status and emerging opportunities in several interdependent areas under one health concept. Consolidating the recent state-of-the-art studies that integrate human, animal, plant, and environment health, the following points have been highlighted: (i) The biomedical and pharmacological advantages of phages and their antimicrobial derivatives with particular emphasis on in-vivo and clinical studies. (ii) The remarkable potential of phages to be altered, improved, and applied for drug delivery, biosensors, biomedical imaging, tissue engineering, energy, and catalysis. (iii) Resurgence of phages in biocontrol of plant, food, and animal-borne pathogens. (iv) Commercialization of phage-based products, current challenges, and perspectives.

Novel Heterostructure-Based CoFe and Cobalt Oxysulfide Nanocubes for Effective Bifunctional Electrocatalytic Water and Urea Oxidation

The development of effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) on heterostructure electrocatalysts with specific interfaces and characteristics provides a distinctive character. In this study, heterostructure nanocubes (NCs) comprising inner cobalt oxysulfide (CoOS) NCs and outer CoFe (CF) layered double hydroxide (LDH) are developed using a hydrothermal methodology. During the sulfidation process, the divalent sulfur ions (S2- ) are released from the breakdown of the sulfur source and react with the Co-precursors on the surface leading to the transformation of CoOH nanorods into CoOS nanocubes. Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses reveal that the interactions at the interface of the CF@CoOS NCs significantly altered the electronic structure, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. The optimal catalysts exhibited effective OER and UOR activities, the attained potentials are 1.51 and 1.36 V. This remarkable performance is attributable to the induction of electron transfer from the CoFe LDH to CoOS, which reduces the energy barrier of the intermediates for the OER and UOR. Furthermore, an alkaline water and urea two-cell electrolyzer assembled using CF@CoOS-2 NCs and Pt/C as the anode and cathode requires a cell voltage of 1.63 and 1.56 V along with a durability performance.

Mechanical Durability and Flexibility in Perovskite Photovoltaics: Advancements and Applications

The remarkable progress in perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology has witnessed a remarkable leap in efficiency within the past decade. As this technology continues to mature, flexible PSCs (F-PSCs) are emerging as pivotal components for a wide array of applications, spanning from powering portable electronics and wearable devices to integrating seamlessly into electronic textiles and large-scale industrial roofing. F-PSCs characterized by their lightweight, mechanical flexibility, and adaptability for cost-effective roll-to-roll manufacturing, hold immense commercial potential. However, the persistent concerns regarding the overall stability and mechanical robustness of these devices loom large. This comprehensive review delves into recent strides made in enhancing the mechanical stability of F-PSCs. It covers a spectrum of crucial aspects, encompassing perovskite material optimization, precise crystal grain regulation, film quality enhancement, strategic interface engineering, innovational developed flexible transparent electrodes, judicious substrate selection, and the integration of various functional layers. By collating and analyzing these dedicated research endeavors, this review illuminates the current landscape of progress in addressing the challenges surrounding mechanical stability. Furthermore, it provides valuable insights into the persistent obstacles and bottlenecks that demand attention and innovative solutions in the field of F-PSCs.

Iron oxide-promoted photochemical oxygen reduction to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a valuable green oxidant with a wide range of applications. Furthermore, it is recognized as a possible future energy carrier achieving safe operation, storage and transportation. The photochemical production of H2O2 serves as a promising alternative to the waste- and energy-intensive anthraquinone process. Following the 12 principles of Green Chemistry, we demonstrate a facile and general approach to sustainable catalyst development utilizing earth-abundant iron and biobased sources only. We developed several iron oxide (FeOx) nanoparticles (NPs) for successful photochemical oxygen reduction to H2O2 under visible light illumination (445 nm). Achieving a selectivity for H2O2 of >99%, the catalyst material could be recycled for up to four consecutive rounds. An apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 0.11% was achieved for the photochemical oxygen reduction to H2O2 with visible light (445 nm) at ambient temperatures and pressures (9.4-14.8 mmol g-1 L-1). Reaching productivities of H2O2 of at least 1.7 ± 0.3 mmol g-1 L-1 h-1, production of H2O2 was further possible via sunlight irradiation and in seawater. Finally, a detailed mechanism has been proposed on the basis of experimental investigation of the catalyst's properties and computational results.

Performance Optimization of Ionic Polymer Sensors through Characteristic Regulation of Chemically Prepared Interfacial Electrodes

Ionic polymer sensors (IPSs) have broad application prospects in health monitoring, environmental perception, and human-computer interaction. The performance of IPSs with chemically prepared electrodes is generally superior to that with physically prepared electrodes due to the area difference of the electric double layer (EDL), but the effects of the electrode characteristics prepared by chemical methods on the performance of IPSs have not been revealed. Therefore, in this paper, we studied the impact of the characteristics of chemically prepared electrodes on the performance of IPSs and realized the performance optimization of IPSs through electrode characteristic regulation. By controlling the matrix surface roughening, immersion reduction plating (IRP) cycles, and electroplating (EP) time, the sensing performances of IPS samples with different electrode interface roughnesses, electrode penetration depths, and surface resistances were investigated, respectively. The experimental results indicated that the response voltage of the IPS can be improved by increasing the electrode interface roughness and the electrode penetration depth and reducing the surface resistance. In addition, we have proven that the sensing performance of the IPS is determined by its intrinsic capacitance characteristics. Through coupling electrode characteristic regulations such as roughening and increasing IRP cycles and EP time, a high-performance IPS was obtained, and its response amplitude was improved by 237.8%. The obtained high-performance sensor has been applied in human motion detection, which has good potential to develop wearable devices with high stability for physiological activity monitoring.

Versatile Nitrogen-Centered Organic Redox-Active Materials for Alkali Metal-Ion Batteries

Versatile nitrogen-centered organic redox-active molecules have gained significant attention in alkali metal-ion batteries (AMIBs) due to their low cost, low toxicity, and ease of preparation. Specially, their multiple reaction categories (anion/cation insertion types of reaction) and higher operating voltage, when compared to traditional conjugated carbonyl materials, underscore their promising prospects. However, the high solubility of nitrogen-centered redox active materials in organic electrolyte and their low electronic conductivity contribute to inferior cycling performance, sluggish reaction kinetics, and limited rate capability. This review provides a detailed overview of nitrogen-centered redox-active materials, encompassing their redox chemistry, solutions to overcome shortcomings, characterization of charge storage mechanisms, and recent progress. Additionally, prospects and directions are proposed for future investigations. It is anticipated that this review will stimulate further exploration of underlying mechanisms and interface chemistry through in situ characterization techniques, thereby promoting the practical application of nitrogen-centered redox-active materials in AMIBs.

Multifunctional sulfonium-based treatment for perovskite solar cells with less than 1% efficiency loss over 4,500-h operational stability tests

The stabilization of grain boundaries and surfaces of the perovskite layer is critical to extend the durability of perovskite solar cells. Here we introduced a sulfonium-based molecule, dimethylphenethylsulfonium iodide (DMPESI), for the post-deposition treatment of formamidinium lead iodide perovskite films. The treated films show improved stability upon light soaking and remains in the black α phase after two years ageing under ambient condition without encapsulation. The DMPESI-treated perovskite solar cells show less than 1% performance loss after more than 4,500 h at maximum power point tracking, yielding a theoretical T80 of over nine years under continuous 1-sun illumination. The solar cells also display less than 5% power conversion efficiency drops under various ageing conditions, including 100 thermal cycles between 25 °C and 85 °C and an 1,050-h damp heat test.

Towards the 4 V-class n-type organic lithium-ion positive electrode materials: the case of conjugated triflimides and cyanamides

Organic electrode materials have garnered a great deal of interest owing to their sustainability, cost-efficiency, and design flexibility metrics. Despite numerous endeavors to fine-tune their redox potential, the pool of organic positive electrode materials with a redox potential above 3 V versus Li+/Li0, and maintaining air stability in the Li-reservoir configuration remains limited. This study expands the chemical landscape of organic Li-ion positive electrode chemistries towards the 4 V-class through molecular design based on electron density depletion within the redox center via the mesomeric effect of electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs). This results in the development of novel families of conjugated triflimides and cyanamides as high-voltage electrode materials for organic lithium-ion batteries. These are found to exhibit ambient air stability and demonstrate reversible electrochemistry with redox potentials spanning the range of 3.1 V to 3.8 V (versus Li+/Li0), marking the highest reported values so far within the realm of n-type organic chemistries. Through comprehensive structural analysis and extensive electrochemical studies, we elucidate the relationship between the molecular structure and the ability to fine-tune the redox potential. These findings offer promising opportunities to customize the redox properties of organic electrodes, bridging the gap with their inorganic counterparts for application in sustainable and eco-friendly electrochemical energy storage devices.

Vanadium-Based Cathodic Materials of Aqueous Zn-Ion Battery for Superior-Performance with Prolonged-Life Cycle

Aqueous Zn-ion battery systems (AZIBs) have emerged as the most dependable solution, as demonstrated by successful systematic growth over the past few years. Cost effectivity, high performance and power density with prolonged life cycle are some major reason of the recent progress in AZIBs. Development of vanadium-based cathodic materials for AZIBs has appeared widely. This review contains a brief display of the basic facts and history of AZIBs. An insight section on zinc storage mechanism ramifications is given. A detailed discussion is conducted on features of high-performance and long life-time cathodes. Such features include design, modifications, electrochemical and cyclic performance, along with stability and zinc storage pathway of vanadium based cathodes from 2018 to 2022. Finally, this review outlines obstacles and opportunities with encouragement for gathering a strong conviction for future advancement in vanadium-based cathodes for AZIBs.

Inorganic All-Solid-State Sodium Batteries: Electrolyte Designing and Interface Engineering

Inorganic all-solid-state sodium batteries (IASSSBs) are emerged as promising candidates to replace commercial lithium-ion batteries in large-scale energy storage systems due to their potential advantages, such as abundant raw materials, robust safety, low price, high-energy density, favorable reliability and stability. Inorganic sodium solid electrolytes (ISSEs) are an indispensable component of IASSSBs, gaining significant attention. Herein, this review begins by discussing the fundamentals of ISSEs, including their ionic conductivity, mechanical property, chemical and electrochemical stabilities. It then presents the crystal structures of advanced ISSEs (e.g., β/β''-alumina, NASICON, sulfides, complex hydride and halide electrolytes) and the related issues, along with corresponding modification strategies. The review also outlines effective approaches for forming intimate interfaces between ISSEs and working electrodes. Finally, current challenges and critical perspectives for the potential developments and possible directions to improve interfacial contacts for future practical applications of ISSEs are highlighted. This comprehensive review aims to advance the understanding and development of next-generation rechargeable IASSSBs.

The Electrical Behaviors of Grain Boundaries in Polycrystalline Optoelectronic Materials

Polycrystalline optoelectronic materials are widely used for photoelectric signal conversion and energy harvesting and play an irreplaceable role in the semiconductor field. As an important factor in determining the optoelectronic properties of polycrystalline materials, grain boundaries (GBs) are the focus of research. Particular emphases are placed on the generation and height of GB barriers, how carriers move at GBs, whether GBs act as carrier transport channels or recombination sites, and how to change the device performance by altering the electrical behaviors of GBs. This review introduces the evolution of GB theory and experimental observation history, classifies GB electrical behaviors from the perspective of carrier dynamics, and summarizes carrier transport state under external conditions such as bias and illumination and the related band bending. Then the carrier scattering at GBs and the electrical differences between GBs and twin boundaries are discussed. Last, the review describes how the electrical behaviors of GBs can be influenced and modified by treatments such as passivation or by consciously adjusting the distribution of grain boundary elements. By studying the carrier dynamics and the relevant electrical behaviors of GBs in polycrystalline materials, researchers can develop optoelectronics with higher performance.

A Practical Approach Toward Highly Reproducible and High-Quality Perovskite Films Based on an Aging Treatment

Solution processing of hybrid perovskite semiconductors is a highly promising approach for the fabrication of cost-effective electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, challenges with this approach lie in overcoming the controllability of the perovskite film morphology and the reproducibility of device efficiencies. Here, a facile and practical aging treatment (AT) strategy is reported to modulate the perovskite crystal growth to produce sufficiently high-quality perovskite thin films with improved homogeneity and full-coverage morphology. The resulting AT-films exhibit fewer defects, faster charge carrier transfer/extraction, and suppressed non-radiative recombination compared with reference. The AT-devices achieve a noticeable improvement in the reproducibility, operational stability, and photovoltaic performance of devices, with the average efficiency increased by 16%. It also demonstrates the feasibility and scalability of AT strategy in optimizing the film morphology and device performance for other perovskite components including MAPbI3 , (MAPbBr3 )15 (FAPbI3 )85 , and Cs0.05 (MAPbBr3 )0.17 (FAPbI3 )0.83 . This method opens an effective avenue to improve the quality of perovskite films and photovoltaic devices in a scalable and reproducible manner.

Boosting Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Activity of Ru Single-Atom Through Promoting Hydroxyl Adsorption on Ru/WC1- x Interfaces

The sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in alkaline conditions continue to pose a significant challenge for the practical implementation of anion-exchange membrane fuel cells. Developing single-atom catalysts can accelerate the pace of new HOR catalyst discovery for highly cost-effective and active HOR performance. However, single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the alkaline HOR have rarely been reported, and fundamental studies on the rational design of SACs are still required. Herein, the design of Ru SAC supported on the tungsten carbide (Ru SA/WC1- x ) via in situ high-temperature annealing strategy is reported. The resulting Ru SA/WC1- x catalyst exhibits remarkably enhanced HOR performance in alkaline media, a level of activity that can not be achieved with carbon-supported Ru SAC. Electrochemical results and density functional theory demonstrate that promoting the hydroxyl adsorption on Ru SA/WC1- x interfaces, which is derived from the low potential of zero charge of WC1- x support, has a significant effect on enhancing the HOR performance of SACs. This enhancement leads to 5.8 and 60.1 times higher Ru mass activity of Ru SA/WC1- x than Ru nanoparticles on carbon and Ru single-atom on N-doped carbon, respectively. This work provides new insights into the design of highly active SACs for alkaline HOR.

Halogenated Nonfused Ring Electron Acceptor for Organic Solar Cells with a Record Efficiency of over 17

Three nonfused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs), namely, 3TT-C2-F, 3TT-C2-Cl, and 3TT-C2, are purposefully designed and synthesized with the concept of halogenation. The incorporation of F or/and Cl atoms into the molecular structure (3TT-C2-F and 3TT-C2-Cl) enhances the π-π stacking, improves electron mobility, and regulates the nanofiber morphology of blend films, thus facilitating the exciton dissociation and charge transport. In particular, blend films based on D18:3TT-C2-F demonstrate a high charge mobility, an extended exciton diffusion distance, and a well-formed nanofiber network. These factors contribute to devices with a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 17.19%, surpassing that of 3TT-C2-Cl (16.17%) and 3TT-C2 (15.42%). To the best of knowledge, this represents the highest efficiency achieved in NFREA-based devices up to now. These results highlight the potential of halogenation in NFREAs as a promising approach to enhance the performance of organic solar cells.

Effects of tracker location on the accuracy and precision of the Gazepoint GP3 HD for spectacle wearers

Remote view eye-tracking systems are prone to errors when used on spectacle wearers due to reflections from the lenses and frame that result in inaccurate tracking. Traditionally, these trackers are situated below a computer monitor and the viewer's eye moments are recorded while they view the screen. Reflections may be influenced by the pantoscopic tilt of the spectacles, whereby the tilt angle causes incident light to be reflected to the camera. To overcome this problem, we propose mounting the tracker above the monitor to avoid these reflections and test the accuracy and precision of subjects with single vision spectacles, multifocals, and no correction, using both mounting positions. Experimental results showed that this alternate position had overall worse accuracy (4.06° ± 0.13) and precision (0.67° ± 0.05) compared to the standard configuration (2.15° ± 0.06 vs. 0.50° ± 0.03), with more invalid readings (5.91 vs. 19.19%) for single vision lens wearers. Multifocals performed better for the top-mounting position for the top portion of the monitor, suggesting higher-order aberrations from the bottom portion of the lens negatively impact data quality. Higher pantoscopic tilt angles displayed an improved accuracy for this alternate position (r(9) = - 0.69, p = 0.02), with superior accuracy for tilt angles greater than 14° compared to the standard configuration. This study quantifies the impact of spectacle wear on eye-tracking performance and suggests other alternate mounting positions may be viable in certain situations.

An Amiable Design of Cobalt Single Atoms as the Active Sites for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Desalinated Seawater

Green fuel from water splitting is hardcore for future generations, and the limited source of fresh water (<1%) is a bottleneck. Seawater cannot be used directly as a feedstock in current electrolyzer techniques. Until now single atom catalysts were reported by many synthetic strategies using notorious chemicals and harsh conditions. A cobalt single-atom (CoSA) intruding cobalt oxide ultrasmall nanoparticle (Co3 O4 USNP)-intercalated porous carbon (PC) (CoSA-Co3 O4 @PC) electrocatalyst was synthesized from the waste orange peel as a single feedstock (solvent/template). The extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and theoretical fitting reveal a clear picture of the coordination environment of the CoSA sites (CoSA-Co3 O4 and CoSA-N4 in PC). To impede the direct seawater corrosion and chlorine evolution the seawater has been desalinated (Dseawater) with minimal cost and the obtained PC is used as an adsorbent in this process. CoSA-Co3 O4 @PC shows high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in transitional metal impurity-free (TMIF) 1 M KOH and alkaline Dseawater. CoSA-Co3 O4 @PC exhibits mass activity that is 15 times higher than the commercial RuO2 . Theoretical interpretations suggest that the optimized CoSA sites in Co3 O4 USNPs reduce the energy barrier for alkaline water dissociation and simultaneously trigger an excellent OER followed by an adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM).

Unleashing the capacity of Rhodococcus for converting lignin into lipids

Bioconversion of bioresources/wastes (e.g., lignin, chemical pulping byproducts) represents a promising approach for developing a bioeconomy to help address growing energy and materials demands. Rhodococcus, a promising microbial strain, utilizes numerous carbon sources to produce lipids, which are precursors for synthesizing biodiesel and aviation fuels. However, compared to chemical conversion, bioconversion involves living cells, which is a more complex system that needs further understanding and upgrading. Various wastes amenable to bioconversion are reviewed herein to highlight the potential of Rhodococci for producing lipid-derived bioproducts. In light of the abundant availability of these substrates, Rhodococcus' metabolic pathways converting them to lipids are analyzed from a "beginning-to-end" view. Based on an in-depth understanding of microbial metabolic routes, genetic modifications of Rhodococcus by employing emerging tools (e.g., multiplex genome editing, biosensors, and genome-scale metabolic models) are presented for promoting the bioconversion. Co-solvent enhanced lignocellulose fractionation (CELF) strategy facilitates the generation of a lignin-derived aromatic stream suitable for the Rhodococcus' utilization. Novel alkali sterilization (AS) and elimination of thermal sterilization (ETS) approaches can significantly enhance the bioaccessibility of lignin and its derived aromatics in aqueous fermentation media, which promotes lipid titer significantly. In order to achieve value-added utilization of lignin, biodiesel and aviation fuel synthesis from lignin and lipids are further discussed. The possible directions for unleashing the capacity of Rhodococcus through synergistically modifying microbial strains, substrates, and fermentation processes are proposed toward a sustainable biological lignin valorization.

Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells-compositions for improved stability and power conversion efficiency

Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells (PSTSCs) represent an emerging opportunity to compete with industry-standard single junction crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. The maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of single junction cells is set by the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit (33.7%). However, tandem cells can expand this value to ~ 45% by utilising two stacked solar cells to harvest the solar spectrum more efficiently. 33.9% PCE has already been achieved with PSTSCs. This perspective analyses recent advances in PSTSC technology, with an emphasis on optimal perovskite composition, the problem and mitigation of light-induced halide phase segregation, self-assembled hole transporting monolayers and additives that can improve and stabilise the perovskite. Top-performing compositions show three cationic components (Cs+, FA+, Pb2+) and three anionic (I-, Br-, Cl-) with a bandgap between 1.55 and 1.77 eV and a theoretical maximum of 1.73 eV (717 nm). Anionic additives such as (Br3)- and SCN- reduce trap states and segregation. 2D-perovskite grain boundary interfaces are created with cationic alkylammonium additives such as methyl-phenethylammonium (MPEA) and result in improved performance. 2-, 3- or 4-terminal devices with a (partly) textured silicon heterojunction (SHJ) bottom cell are ideal. An ultra-thin interfacial recombination layer (~ 5 nm) of indium tin oxide (ITO) or indium zinc oxide (IZO) containing a carbazole-based hole transporting self-assembled monolayer (Me-4PACz) is used for optimal 2-terminal tandem devices.

High-Performance Indoor Perovskite Solar Cells by Self-Suppression of Intrinsic Defects via a Facile Solvent-Engineering Strategy

Lead halide perovskite solar cells have been emerging as very promising candidates for applications in indoor photovoltaics. To maximize their indoor performance, it is of critical importance to suppress intrinsic defects of the perovskite active layer. Herein, a facile solvent-engineering strategy is developed for effective suppression of both surface and bulk defects in lead halide perovskite indoor solar cells, leading to a high efficiency of 35.99% under the indoor illumination of 1000 lux Cool-white light-emitting diodes. Replacing dimethylformamide (DMF) with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) in the perovskite precursor solvent significantly passivates the intrinsic defects within the thus-prepared perovskite films, prolongs the charge carrier lifetimes and reduces non-radiative charge recombination of the devices. Compared to the DMF, the much higher interaction energy between NMP and formamidinium iodide/lead halide contributes to the markedly improved quality of the perovskite thin films with reduced interfacial halide deficiency and non-radiative charge recombination, which in turn enhances the device performance. This work paves the way for developing efficient indoor perovskite solar cells for the increasing demand for power supplies of Internet-of-Things devices.

Selective butyric acid production from CO2 and its upgrade to butanol in microbial electrosynthesis cells

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising carbon utilization technology, but the low-value products (i.e., acetate or methane) and the high electric power demand hinder its industrial adoption. In this study, electrically efficient MES cells with a low ohmic resistance of 15.7 mΩ m2 were operated galvanostatically in fed-batch mode, alternating periods of high CO2 and H2 availability. This promoted acetic acid and ethanol production, ultimately triggering selective (78% on a carbon basis) butyric acid production via chain elongation. An average production rate of 14.5 g m-2 d-1 was obtained at an applied current of 1.0 or 1.5 mA cm-2, being Megasphaera sp. the key chain elongating player. Inoculating a second cell with the catholyte containing the enriched community resulted in butyric acid production at the same rate as the previous cell, but the lag phase was reduced by 82%. Furthermore, interrupting the CO2 feeding and setting a constant pH2 of 1.7-1.8 atm in the cathode compartment triggered solventogenic butanol production at a pH below 4.8. The efficient cell design resulted in average cell voltages of 2.6-2.8 V and a remarkably low electric energy requirement of 34.6 kWhel kg-1 of butyric acid produced, despite coulombic efficiencies being restricted to 45% due to the cross-over of O2 and H2 through the membrane. In conclusion, this study revealed the optimal operating conditions to achieve energy-efficient butyric acid production from CO2 and suggested a strategy to further upgrade it to valuable butanol.

Efficient Cu2O Photocathodes for Aqueous Photoelectrochemical CO2 Reduction to Formate and Syngas

Photoelectrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (PEC-CO2R) represents a promising approach for producing renewable fuels and chemicals using solar energy. However, attaining even modest solar-to-fuel (STF) conversion efficiency often necessitates the use of costly semiconductors and noble-metal catalysts. Herein, we present a Cu2O/Ga2O3/TiO2 photocathode modified with Sn/SnOx catalysts through a simple photoelectrodeposition method. It achieves a remarkable half-cell STF efficiency of ∼0.31% for the CO2R in aqueous KHCO3 electrolyte, under AM 1.5 G illumination. The system enables efficient production of syngas (FE: ∼62%, CO/H2 ≈ 1:2) and formate (FE: ∼38%) with a consistent selectivity over a wide potential range, from +0.34 to -0.16 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode. We ascribe the observed performance to the favorable optoelectronic characteristics of our Cu2O heterostructure and the efficient Sn/SnOx catalysts incorporated in the PEC-CO2R reactions. Through comprehensive experimental investigations, we elucidate the indispensable role of Cu2O buried p-n junctions in generating a high photovoltage (∼1 V) and enabling efficient bulk charge separation (up to ∼70% efficiency). Meanwhile, we discover that the deposited Sn/SnOx catalysts have critical dual effects on the overall performance of the PEC devices, serving as active CO2R catalysts as well as the semiconductor front contact. It could facilitate interfacial electron transfer between the catalysts and the semiconductor device for CO2R by establishing a barrier-free ohmic contact.

A Conductive 3D Dual-Metal π-d Conjugated Metal-Organic Framework Fe3 (HITP)2 /bpm@Co for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Although 2D π-d conjugated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit high in-plane conductivity, the closely stacked layers result in low specific surface area and difficulty in mass transfer and diffusion. Hence, a conductive 3D MOF Fe3 (HITP)2 /bpm@Co (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene) is reported through inserting bpm (4,4'-bipyrimidine) ligands and Co2+ into the interlayers of 2D MOF Fe3 (HITP)2 . Compared to 2D Fe3 (HITP)2 (37.23 m2  g-1 ), 3D Fe3 (HITP)2 /bpm@Co displays a huge improvement in the specific surface area (373.82 m2  g-1 ). Furthermore, the combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations demonstrate the metallic behavior of Fe3 (HITP)2 /bpm@Co, which will benefit to the electrocatalytic activity of it. Impressively, Fe3 (HITP)2 /bpm@Co exhibits prominent and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance (an overpotential of 299 mV vs RHE at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 37.14 mV dec-1 ), which is superior to 2D Fe3 (HITP)2 and comparable to commercial IrO2 . DFT theoretical calculation reveals that the combined action of the Fe and Co sites in Fe3 (HITP)2 /bpm@Co is responsible for the enhanced electrocatalytic activity. This work provides an alternative approach to develop conductive 3D MOFs as efficient electrocatalysts.

Enhancing the Efficiency and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells through Defect Passivation and Controlled Crystal Growth Using Allantoin

In this study, we present a robust approach that concurrently manages crystal growth and defect passivation within the perovskite layer through the introduction of a small molecule additive─allantoin. The precise regulation of crystal growth in the presence of allantoin yields perovskite films characterized by enhanced morphology, larger grain size, and improved grain orientation. Notably, the carbonyl and amino groups present in allantoin passivate under-coordinated Pb2+ and I- defects, respectively, through molecular interactions. Trap density in the perovskite layer is measured, and it is 0.39 × 1016 cm-3 for the allantoin-incorporated device and 0.83 × 1016 cm-3 for the pristine device. This reduction in defects leads to reduced trap-assisted nonradiative recombination, as confirmed by the photoluminescence, transient photo voltage, and impedance measurements. As a result, when these allantoin-incorporated perovskite films are implemented as the active layer in solar cells, a noteworthy efficiency enhancement to 20.63% is attained, surpassing the 18.04% of their pristine counterparts. Furthermore, devices with allantoin exhibit remarkable operational stability, maintaining 80% of their efficiency even after 500 h of continuous illumination, whereas the pristine device degraded to 65% of its initial efficiency in 400 h. Also, allantoin-incorporated devices exhibited exceptional stability against high humidity and elevated temperatures.

Absolute Sustainability Assessment of Flue Gas Valorization to Ammonia and Synthetic Natural Gas

Carbon capture and utilization has gained attention to potentially curb CO2 emissions while generating valuable chemicals. These technologies will coexist with fossil analogs, creating synergies to leverage circular economy principles. In this context, flue gas valorization from power plants can assist in the transition. Here, we assessed the absolute sustainability of a simulated integrated facility producing ammonia and synthetic natural gas from flue gas from a combined-cycle natural gas power plant based in Germany, using hydrogen from three water electrolysis technologies (proton exchange membrane, alkaline, and solid oxide cells), nitrogen, and CO2. For the first time, we applied the planetary boundaries (PBs) framework to a circular integrated system, evaluating its performance relative to the safe operating space. The PB-LCA assessment showed that the alternative technologies could significantly reduce, among others, the impact on climate change and biosphere integrity when compared to their fossil counterparts, which could be deemed unsustainable in climate change. Nevertheless, these alternative technologies could also lead to burden shifting and are not yet economically viable. Overall, the investigated process could smoothen the transition toward low-carbon technologies, but its potential collateral damages should be carefully considered. Furthermore, the application of the PBs provides an appealing framework to quantify the absolute sustainability level of integrated circular systems.

Interphase Regulation by Multifunctional Additive Empowering High Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries with Enhanced Cycle Life and Thermal Safety

High energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) adopting high-nickel layered oxide cathodes and silicon-based composite anodes always suffer from unsatisfied cycle life and poor safety performance, especially at elevated temperatures. Electrode /electrolyte interphase regulation by functional additives is one of the most economic and efficacious strategies to overcome this shortcoming. Herein, cyano-groups (-CN) are introduced into lithium fluorinated phosphate to synthesize a novel multifunctional additive of lithium tetrafluoro (1,2-dihydroxyethane-1,1,2,2-tetracarbonitrile) phosphate (LiTFTCP), which endows high nickel LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 /SiOx -graphite composite full cell with an ultrahigh cycle life and superior safety characteristics, by adding only 0.5 wt % LiTFTCP into a LiPF6 -carbonate baseline electrolyte. It is revealed that LiTFTCP additive effectively suppresses the HF generation and facilitates the formation of a robust and heat-resistant cyano-enriched CEI layer as well as a stable LiF-enriched SEI layer. The favorable SEI/CEI layers greatly lessen the electrode degradation, electrolyte consumption, thermal-induced gassing and total heat-releasing. This work illuminates the importance of additive molecular engineering and interphase regulation in simultaneously promoting the cycling and thermal safety of LIBs with high-nickel NCMxyz cathode and silicon-based composite anode.

Unraveling the Role of Perovskite in Buried Interface Passivation

Interfaces in perovskite solar cells play a crucial role in their overall performance, and therefore, detailed fundamental studies are needed for a better understanding. In the case of the classical n-i-p architecture, TiO2 is one of the most used electron-selective layers and can induce chemical reactions that influence the performance of the overall device stack. The interfacial properties at the TiO2/perovskite interface are often neglected, owing to the difficulty in accessing this interface. Here, we use X-rays of variable energies to study the interface of (compact and mesoporous) TiO2/perovskite in such a n-i-p architecture. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy methods show that the defect states present in the TiO2 layer are passivated by a chemical interaction of the perovskite precursor solution during the formation of the perovskite layer and form an organic layer at the interface. Such passivation of intrinsic defects in TiO2 removes charge recombination centers and shifts the bands upward. Therefore, interface defect passivation by oxidation of Ti3+ states, the organic cation layer, and an upward band bending at the TiO2/perovskite interface explain the origin of an improved electron extraction and hole-blocking nature of TiO2 in the n-i-p perovskite solar cells.

Clustering Six Electrons within "Dawson-Like" Polyoxometalate: An Open Route toward Its Post-functionalization

Super-reduction of polyoxometalates (POMs) in solution is of fundamental interest for designing innovative energy storage systems. In this article, we show that the "Dawson-like" POM can undergo a disproportionation process during its massive electron uptake, leading to species containing three metal-metal bonds as evidenced by X-ray diffraction, multi-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1 H and 183 W NMR), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), UV/Vis, and voltammetry techniques. This result indicates that electron storing within metal-metal bonds is not a unique property of Keggin-type POM as postulated since the 70s. Besides, we demonstrate that the presence of an electron-rich triad in the "Dawson-like" POM allows its post-functionalization with additional tungstate ions, generating a chiral molecule that is also the largest WIV -containing POMs known to date.

Ground-State Orbital Analysis Predicts S1 Charge Transfer in Donor-Acceptor Materials

Donor-acceptor (D-A) materials can exhibit a wide range of unique photophysical properties with applications in next-generation optoelectronics. Electronic structure calculations of D-A dimers are often employed to predict the properties of D-A materials. One of the most important D-A dimer quantities is the degree of charge transfer (DCT) in the S1 state, which correlates with properties such as fluorescence lifetimes and intersystem crossing rates in D-A materials. While predictive metrics of the S1 DCT generally require an excited-state quantum chemistry calculation, presented here is a novel metric that predicts S1 DCT solely with ground-state orbital analysis. This metric quantifies the similarity of the orbitals between a dimer complex and its monomer components. A linear relationship is found between this similarity metric and the S1 DCT, calculated using a data set of 31 D-A dimers. Best practices for integrating this novel orbital structure-function relationship into high-throughput screening methods are discussed.

High-Throughput Deposition of Recyclable SnO2 Electrodes toward Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Chemical bath deposited (CBD) SnO2 is one of the most prevailing electron transport layers for realizing high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) so far. However, the state-of-the-art CBD SnO2 process is time-consuming, contradictory to its prospect in industrialization. Herein, a simplified yet efficient method is developed for the fast deposition of SnO2 electrodes by incorporating a concentrated Sn source stabilized by the ethanol ligand with antimony (Sb) doping. The higher concentration of Sn source promotes the deposition rate, and Sb doping improves the hole-blocking capability of the CBD SnO2 layer so that its target thickness can be reduced to further save the deposition time. As a result, the deposition time can be appreciably reduced from 3-4 h to only 5 min while maintaining 95% of the maximum efficiency, indicating the power of the method toward high-throughput production of efficient PSCs. Additionally, the CBD SnO2 substrates are recyclable after removing the upper layers of complete PSCs, and the refurbished PSCs can maintain ≈98% of their initial efficiency after three recycling-and-fabrication processes.
