Abstract
A new visible-light-mediated non-directed oxidative annulation between 2-arylindazoles and electron-deficient olefins using commercially available piperidine-1-sulfonyl chloride as the radical precursor to afford fused 5,6-dihydroindazolo[2,3-a]quinolines has been developed under mild reaction conditions. This transformation occurs via two consecutive C-H bond functionalizations. The mechanistic investigation results indicate that the reaction progresses through a radical pathway forming a 2-(2-aryl-2H-indazol-3-yl)-3-piperidin-1-ylsulfonyl derivative as an intermediate.

Abstract
C-H Functionalization of heteroarenes stands as a potent instrument in organic synthesis, and with the incorporation of visible light, it emerged as a transformative game-changer. In this domain, electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, formed through the pairing of an electron-rich substrate with an electron-accepting molecule, has garnered substantial consideration in recent years due to the related avoidance of the requirement of photocatalyst as well as oxidant. EDA complexes can undergo photoactivation under mild conditions and exhibit high functional group tolerance, making them potentially suitable for the functionalization of biologically relevant heteroarenes. This review article provides an overview of recent advancements in the field of C-H functionalization of heteroarenes via EDA complex photoactivation with literature coverage up to April, 2024.

Abstract
In this report, a tert-butyl nitrite (TBN)-mediated straightforward metal-free approach has been presented for the synthesis of a diverse range of C-3-substituted indazole-indole hybrids using readily accessible 2-(indolin-3-ylidenemethyl)aniline derivatives. This strategy is proposed to occur via a diazonium salt intermediate that is capable of cascade isomerization and intramolecular C-N bond formation through a 5-endo-dig cyclization to achieve a wide variety of indazole-indole hybrids in good yields.

Abstract
Comprehensive computational studies were carried out to explore the mechanisms and origin of regioselectivity in the Pd-catalyzed regiodivergent coupling reaction of indazoles and isoprene. Three different insertion models were investigated for regioselectivity 1,2- or 4,3-insertion with respect to the electrophilic sites on isoprene under two different ligands (L1 and L2) and acids ((PhO)2PO2H, (nBuO)2PO2H) via PdII-H species, allyl-π-PdII-O, and indazoles-acid-assisted PdII-π-allyl. The calculated results show that the PdII-π-allyl coordinated mechanism is the most preferred one. The noncovalent interactions between the less bulky ligand L1, substrates, and (PhO)2PO2- are found to be key factors for 1,2-insertion. The 4,3-insertion selectivity is primarily controlled by the steric repulsion of the t-Bu group of bulky ligand L2 and substrate, as well as the geometry distortion. Therefore, the regioselectivity difference of the 1,2- and 4,3-insertion on electrophilic sites is controlled by the synergistic effect of ligands and acids instead of the size of the ligand. Similarly, nucleophilic site selectivity at N1 or N2 of indazoles is governed by cooperative acid BF3 and solvent iPrOH rather than BF3 alone. Overall, our findings might open a new avenue for designing more efficient regioselective 1,2- or 4,3-addition or N1-/N2-selective nucleophilic reactions.

Abstract
Recently, visible-light-mediated photoredox catalysis has been emerging as one of the fastest growing fields in organic chemistry because of its low cost, easy availability and environmental benignness. In the past five years, a new yet challenging trend, visible-light-induced redox-neutral carbon-heteroatom bond formation reaction involving presumed radical intermediates, has been flourishing rapidly. Although mostly transition metal-based photoredox catalysts were reported, a few organophotoredox catalysts have also shown efficacy towards carbon-heteroatom bond formation reactions. This review intends to summarize the recent research progress in redox-neutral carbon-heteroatom bond formations based on active intermediate(s) involved under photoredox catalysis.

Abstract
A copper-promoted regiodivergent, AcOH-switchable, distal and proximal direct cyanation of N-aryl-(1H/2H)-indazoles via aerobic oxidative C(sp2)-H bond activation has been developed. The inclusion or exclusion of AcOH as an additive is the foremost cause for the positional switch in the C-CN bond formation method that results in (C-2')-cyanated 2-aryl-2H-indazoles 3a-j, (C-2')-cyanated 1-aryl-1H-indazoles 4a-j [distal], or C-3 cyanated 2-aryl-2H-indazoles 5a-i [proximal] products in good to excellent yields and showed various functional group tolerance. The cyanide (CN-) ion surrogate was generated via the unification of dimethylformamide and ammonium iodide (NH4I). The utilization of molecular oxygen (aerobic oxidative strategy) as a clean and safe oxidant is liable for generous value addition. The further pertinence of the developed protocol has been demonstrated by transforming the synthesized cyanated product into numerous other functional groups, which will, undoubtedly, accomplish utilization in the synthetic area of biologically important compounds and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
A novel electrochemical cross-dehydrogenative C-S bond coupling of aryl thiols with 2H-indazole is reported. Thiol-functionalized 2H-indazoles were synthesized under catalyst-, oxidant-, and metal-free conditions with innocuous hydrogen as the sole byproduct at ambient temperature. Furthermore, continuous electrochemical flow conditions using a graphite/Ni flow cell were used to obtained 3-(arylthio)-2H-indazole compounds on a gram scale within the residence time of 39 min. Detailed mechanistic studies including control experiments and cyclic voltammetry are provided to support the radical-radical cross-coupling pathway.

Abstract
2H-Indazoles are one class of the most important nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. The 2H-indazole motif is widely present in bioactive natural products and drug molecules that exhibit distinctive bioactivities. Therefore, much attention has been paid to access diverse 2H-indazole derivatives. Among them, the late-stage functionalization of 2H-indazoles via C-H activation is recognized as an efficient approach for increasing the complexity and diversity of 2H-indazole derivatives. In this review, we summarized recent achievements in the late-stage functionalization of 2H-indazoles, including the C3-functionalization of 2H-indazoles through transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation or a radical pathway, transition metal-catalyzed ortho C2'-H functionalization of 2H-indazoles and remote C-H functionalization at the benzene ring in 2H-indazoles.

Abstract
Recently, direct C-H bond activation and functionalization has become a prodigious and hot topic among synthetic organic chemists due to its step-economic nature and substantial synthetic versatility. On the other hand, quinoxaline, a fused bicycle of benzene and pyrazine, has omnipresent applications in medicinal-, industrial- and materials chemistry. The presence of the N-1 atom in 2-arylquinoxaline enables chelation formation with a metal catalyst leading to the formation of ortho-substituted products. In this review, all articles related to the ortho C-H bond functionalization of 2-arylquinoxalines published up to May 2022 are highlighted.

Abstract
Earth-abundant and water-tolerant manganese(i) catalyzed alkenylation of 2-arylindazole with alkyl and aryl alkynes through C–H bond activation is described with a unique level of E-selectivity. The reaction proceeds through the control of C3 nucleophilicity of 2-aryl indazoles. This method is applied to the late-stage functionalization of complex molecules including ethinylestradiol, norethisterone, and N-protected amino acid derivatives. The kinetic isotope studies suggest that the C–H bond activation step may not be the rate-determining step. Earth-abundant and water-tolerant manganese(i) catalyzed alkenylation of 2-arylindazole with alkyl and aryl alkynes through C–H bond activation is described with a unique level of E-selectivity.![]()

Abstract
Indoles and indazoles are common moieties in pharmaceuticals and naturally occurring bioactive compounds. The development of light-driven methods using earth-abundant transition-metal catalysts offers an attractive route for functionalization of such compounds. Herein, we report a visible-light-induced method for the C3- and N-alkylation of indoles and indazoles with styrenes, catalyzed by Co complexes based on the macrocyclic Mabiq ligand (Mabiq = 2-4:6-8-bis(3,3,4,4-tetramethyldihydropyrrolo)-10-15-(2,2'-biquinazolino)-[15]-1,3,5,8,10,14-hexaene-1,3,7,9,11,14-N6). The photochemical behavior of two CoIII catalysts was examined: Co(Mabiq)Cl2 and the newly synthesized Co(MabiqBr)Cl2, which contains the Br-modified ligand. Both complexes undergo visible-light-induced homolysis that is significant to their activity but exhibit differences in reactivity. The alkylation reactions are regioselective, furnishing the alkylated indole and indazole products in a Markovnikov fashion with excellent yields of up to 96% across a broad range of substrates. Notably, in contrast to dual-transition-metal and photoredox-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, our studies reveal that the Co complex plays a dual role─as a photosensitizer and catalytically active metal center with the Mabiq ligand offering regiocontrol.

Abstract
A highly efficient oxidant-switched palladium-catalyzed regioselective C(sp2)-H/C(sp2)-H cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) for direct mono/bis-ortho-aroylation of substituted 1-phenyl-1H-indazoles 1a-j with various substituted aldehydes 3a-t via C(sp2)-H bond activation has been developed. In this study, Pd-catalyzed chelation-assisted mono- or bis-aroylation of substituted 1-phenyl-1H-indazoles depends on the type of oxidant being used for the CDC reaction. While mono-ortho-aroylation of substituted 1-phenyl-1H-indazole was obtained using dicumylperoxide (DCP) as the oxidant, the bis-ortho-aroylation product has been afforded by the use of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). Regardless of the greater activity at the C-3 position of 1H-indazoles, the greater coordinating capacity of the N atom directed the aroylating group to the ortho position, leaving behind the nondirected metalation pathway. The Pd-catalyzed operationally simplified methodology proceeded in the presence of oxidants with either DCP or TBHP in dichloroethane as the solvent at 110 °C for 16 h, which generated a miscellaneous variety of monosubstituted o-benzoyl/acyl-1-aryl-1H-indazoles 4a-t/5a-i and bis-substituted o-benzoyl-1-aryl-1H-indazoles 6a-j in ≤88% yields. The probable mechanistic pathway involves a free radical chelation-assisted approach that could be accomplished by the addition of an in situ-generated oxidant-promoted benzoyl/acyl radical to the ortho position of 1-phenyl-1H-indazoles. A wide range of substrates, a high functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, control/competitive experiments, and a variety of synthetic applications further exemplify the versatility of the developed methodology.

Abstract
A new, efficient, and metal-free protocol has been developed for remote difunctionalization of unreactive C-H bonds at the benzene core of 2H-indazole by employing Koser's reagents, which act as both sulfonyloxylating and iodinating agents under ambient air. The present methodology represents facile access to C-4-sulfonyloxylated and C-7-iodinated 2H-indazole derivatives with high regioselectivity, wide functional group tolerance, and broad substrate scope in good to excellent yields. The formed 4,7 disubstituted 2H-indazoles are the precursors of various C-4,7-functionalized 2H-indazoles through simple transformations.

Abstract
Ring substitution reactions of nitroarenes remain an under-developed area of organic synthesis, confined to the narrow domains of SNAr and SNArH reactions. While searching for alternative methodologies, we took stock of the C-H activation reactions of nitroarenes which unearthed a variety of examples of nitro directed regioselective C-H functionalization reactions such as ortho-arylation, -benzylation/alkylation, and -allylation, oxidative Heck and C-H arylation reactions on (hetero)aromatic rings. A collective account of these reactions is presented in this review to showcase the existing landscape of C-H activation reactions of nitroarenes, to create interest in this field for further development and propagate this strategy as a superior alternative for ring substitution reactions of nitroarenes. The prospect of merging the C-H activation of nitroarenes with C-NO2 activation, thereby harnessing NO2 as a transformable multitasking directing group, is also illustrated.

Abstract
A facile, efficient, and transition-metal-free chemodivergent C-3 functionalization of 2H-indazoles was developed under aerobic conditions using carboxylic acid and DMSO as the combined source of the carboxylic acid ester group and DMSO as the formylating agent. A series of formylated indazoles and carboxylic acid esters of indazole derivatives were produced in moderate to excellent yields. The mechanistic studies suggest that the reactions probably proceed through a radical pathway.

Abstract
An efficient, simple, and metal-free fluorination of 2H-indazoles has been developed using N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) in water under ambient air. This transformation provides direct access to fluorinated indazole derivatives with broad functionalities in satisfactory yields. The experimental results suggest a radical mechanistic pathway of this protocol.

Abstract
A novel approach for the asymmetric construction of polycyclic indazole skeletons via enamine-imine activation and PCET activation was developed by merging organocatalysis with photocatalysis through an asymmetric triple-reaction sequence. In this process, five C-X bonds and five consecutive chiral centers were efficiently constructed. Differently substituted polycyclic indazole deriatives were successfully constructed with satisfactory results under mild conditions.

Abstract
Highly regioselective organo photocatalysis of 4CzIPN (1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene) for the arylation of 2H-indazole is demonstrated. The present synthetic route provides a highly safe and easily accessible aniline precursor as an arylation reagent. The photoactivated 4CzIPN organocatalyst is found to be more efficient for single electron transfer without any organic base for the radical reaction. The carbazole-based photocatalyst (4CzIPN) with wide redox potential is stable and recyclable for further reaction transformations. Many indazole and aniline derivatives were used in the reaction and provided the arylated indazole derivatives in good to excellent yield. Highly regioselective organo photocatalysis of 4CzIPN (1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene) for the arylation of 2H-indazole is demonstrated.![]()
