High Efficiency Water Splitting using Ultrasound Coupled to a BaTiO3 Nanofluid

Piezoelectric Catalysis Induces Tumor Cell Senescence to Boost Chemo-Immunotherapy

Cellular senescence, a vulnerable state of growth arrest, has been regarded as a potential strategy to weaken the resistance of tumor cells, leading to dramatic improvements in treatment efficacy. However, a selective and efficient strategy for inducing local tumor cellular senescence has not yet been reported. Herein, piezoelectric catalysis is utilized to reduce intracellular NAD+ to NADH for local tumor cell senescence for the first time. In detail, a biocompatible nanomedicine (BTO/Rh-D@M) is constructed by wrapping the piezoelectric BaTiO3/(Cp*RhCl2)2 (BTO/Rh) and doxorubicin (DOX) in the homologous cytomembrane with tumor target. After tumors are stimulated by ultrasound, negative and positive charges are generated on the BTO/Rh by piezoelectric catalysis, which reduce the intracellular NAD+ to NADH for cellular senescence and oxidize H2O to reactive oxygen species (ROS) for mitochondrial damage. Thus, the therapeutic efficacy of tumor immunogenic cell death-induced chemo-immunotherapy is boosted by combining cellular senescence, DOX, and ROS. The results indicate that 23.9% of the piezoelectric catalysis-treated tumor cells senesced, and solid tumors in mice disappeared completely after therapy. Collectively, this study highlights a novel strategy to realize cellular senescence utilizing piezoelectric catalysis and the significance of inducing tumor cellular senescence to improve therapeutic efficacy.

Piezo-catalysis in BiFeO3@In2Se3 Heterojunction for High-Efficiency Uranium Removal

Piezo-catalysis emerges as an efficient, safe, and affordable strategy for removing hazardous substances from aquatic environments. Here, the BiFeO3@In2Se3 heterojunction demonstrates remarkable prowess as a piezo-catalyst, enabling the high-efficiency removal of uranium (U) from U(VI)-containing water. A total U(VI) removal efficiency of 94.6% can be achieved under ultrasonic vibration without any sacrificial agents. During the entire catalytic process, piezo-induced electrons, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide radicals play important roles in U(VI) removal, while the generated H2O2 is responsive to the transformation of soluble U(VI) into insoluble (UO2)O2•2H2O and UO3. Furthermore, auxiliary illumination can accelerate the increase of free charges, enabling the piezo-catalyst to retain more charges. This leads to an improved U(VI) removal efficiency of 98.8% and a significantly increased reaction rate constant. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the fabrication of high-efficiency piezo-catalysts in the removal or extraction of U(VI) from U(VI)-containing water.

Orderly Arranged Dipoles Regulate Anion-Derived Solid-Electrolyte Interphase for Stable Lithium Metal Chemistry

Lithium (Li) metal batteries are considered the most promising high-energy-density electrochemical energy storage devices of the next generation. However, the unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) derived from electrolytes usually leads to high impedance, Li dendrites growth, and poor cyclability. Herein, the ferroelectric BaTiO3 with orderly arranged dipoles (BTOV) is integrated into the polypropylene separator as a functional layer. Detailed characterizations and theoretical calculations indicate that surface oxygen vacancies drive the phase transition of BaTiO3 materials and promote the ordered arrangement of dipoles. The strong dipole moments in BTOV can adsorb TFSI- and NO3 - anions selectively and promote their preferential reduction to form a SEI film enriched with inorganic LiF and LiNxOy species, thus facilitating the rapid transfer of Li+ and restraining the growth of Li dendrites. As a result, the Li-Li cell with the BTOV functional layer exhibits enhanced Li plating/stripping cycling with an ultra-long life of over 7000 h at 0.5 mA cm-2/1.0 mAh cm-2. The LiFePO4 || Li (50 µm) full cells display excellent cycling performance exceeding 1760 cycles and superior rate performance. This work provides a new perspective for regulating SEI chemistry by introducing ordered dipoles to control the distribution and reaction of anions.

Strategies to Reverse Hypoxic Tumor Microenvironment for Enhanced Sonodynamic Therapy

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has emerged as a highly effective modality for the treatment of malignant tumors owing to its powerful penetration ability, noninvasiveness, site-confined irradiation, and excellent therapeutic efficacy. However, the traditional SDT, which relies on oxygen availability, often fails to generate a satisfactory level of reactive oxygen species because of the widespread issue of hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment of solid tumors. To address this challenge, various approaches are developed to alleviate hypoxia and improve the efficiency of SDT. These strategies aim to either increase oxygen supply or prevent hypoxia exacerbation, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of SDT. In view of this, the current review provides an overview of these strategies and their underlying principles, focusing on the circulation of oxygen from consumption to external supply. The detailed research examples conducted using these strategies in combination with SDT are also discussed. Additionally, this review highlights the future prospects and challenges of the hypoxia-alleviated SDT, along with the key considerations for future clinical applications. These considerations include the development of efficient oxygen delivery systems, the accurate methods for hypoxia detection, and the exploration of combination therapies to optimize SDT outcomes.
