Abstract
Porphyrins are variously substituted tetrapyrrolic macrocycles, with wide-ranging biological and chemical applications derived from metal chelation in the core and the 18π aromatic surface. Under suitable conditions, the porphyrin framework can deform significantly from regular planar shape, owing to steric overload on the porphyrin periphery or steric repulsion in the core, among other structure modulation strategies. Adopting this nonplanar porphyrin architecture allows guest molecules to interact directly with an exposed core, with guest-responsive and photoactive electronic states of the porphyrin allowing energy, information, atom and electron transfer within and between these species. This functionality can be incorporated and tuned by decoration of functional groups and electronic modifications, with individual deformation profiles adapted to specific key sensing and catalysis applications. Nonplanar porphyrins are assisting breakthroughs in molecular recognition, organo- and photoredox catalysis; simultaneously bio-inspired and distinctly synthetic, these molecules offer a new dimension in shape-responsive host-guest chemistry. In this review, we have summarized the synthetic methods and design aspects of nonplanar porphyrin formation, key properties, structure and functionality of the nonplanar aromatic framework, and the scope and utility of this emerging class towards outstanding scientific, industrial and environmental issues.

Abstract
Two types of cobalt porphyrins, viz., meso-tetrakis(tolylporphyrinato)cobalt(II), (TTP)Co (1), and meso-tetrakis(triphenylamino porphyrinato)cobalt(II), [(TPA)4P]Co, (2) were self-assembled via metal-ligand axial coordination of phenyl imidazole functionalized fulleropyrrolidine, ImC[Formula: see text] to form a new series of donor–acceptor constructs. A 1:2 complex formation with ImC[Formula: see text] was established in the case of (TTP)Co while for [(TPA)4P]Co only a 1:1 complex was possible to positively identify. The binding constants [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for step-wise addition of ImC[Formula: see text] to (TTP)Co were found to be 1.07 × 105 and 3.20 × 104 M[Formula: see text], respectively. For [(TPA)4P]Co:ImC[Formula: see text], the measured [Formula: see text] values was found to be 6.48 × 104 M[Formula: see text], slightly smaller than that observed for (TTP)Co. Although both cobalt porphyrins were non-fluorescent, they were able to quench the fluorescence of ImC[Formula: see text] indicating occurrence of excited state events in the supramolecular donor-acceptor complexes. Electrochemistry coupled with spectroelectrochemistry, revealed the formation of cobalt(III) porphyrin cation instead of a cobalt(II) porphyrin radical cation, as the main product, during oxidation of phenyl imidazole coordinated cobalt porphyrin. With the help of computational and electrochemical results, an energy level diagram was constructed to witness excited state photo-events. Competitive energy and electron transfer from excited CoP to coordinated ImC[Formula: see text], and electron transfer from Im1C[Formula: see text]* to cobalt(II) porphyrin resulting into the formation of PCo[Formula: see text]:ImC[Formula: see text] charge separated state was possible to envision from the energy diagram. Finally, using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and data analysis by Glotaran, it was possible to establish sequential occurrence of energy transfer and charge separation processes. The lifetime of the final charge separated state was [Formula: see text] 2 ns. A slightly better charge stabilization was observed in the case of [(TPA)4P]Co:ImC[Formula: see text] due to the presence of electron rich, peripheral triphenylamine substituents on the cobalt porphyrin.

Abstract
A series of four arrays made of a central Sn(IV) porphyrin as scaffold axially connected, via carboxylate functions, to two free-base porphyrins has been prepared and fully characterized. Three arrays in the series feature the same free-base unit and alternative tin-porphyrin macrocycles, and one consists of a second type of free-base and one chosen metallo-porphyrin. A thorough photophysical investigation has been performed on all arrays by means of time-resolved emission and absorption techniques. Specific focus has been given at identifying how structural modifications of the free-base and tin-porphyrin partners and/or variation of the solvent polarity can effectively translate into distinct photophysical behaviors. In particular, for systems SnTPP(Fb)2 (1) and SnOEP(Fb)2 (2), an ultrafast energy transfer process from the excited Sn(IV) porphyrin to the free-base unit occurs with unitary efficiency. For derivative SnTPP(FbR)2 (3), the change of solvent from dichloromethane to toluene is accompanied by a neat change in the intercomponent quenching mechanism, from photoinduced electron transfer to energy transfer, upon excitation of the Sn(IV) porphyrin unit. Finally, for array SnTpFP(Fb)2 (4), an ultrafast electron transfer quenching of both chromophores is detected in all solvents. This work provides a general outline, accompanied by clear experimental support, on possible ways to achieve a systematic fine-tuning of the quenching mechanism (from energy to electron transfer) of Sn(IV) multiporphyrin arrays.

Abstract
10-Heterocorrole complexes with oxygen, sulfur, and selenium at position 10 of the macrocycle and with the divalent ions of nickel, copper, and palladium were prepared and investigated. The focus was set on the size adaptation and matching mechanisms of cavity size versus ionic radius in corrole-type macrocycles. A full set of single-crystal X-ray analytical data revealed that in all but one case the N4 binding site of the ring-contracted tetrapyrrole was larger than necessary to bind the metal ion without deformation. In-plane size adaptation through M-N bond-length elongation by 2.5-3.2 % was effective, as well as pronounced out-of-plane ruffling of the macrocycle for those compounds with a more severe size mismatch. Such ruffling had been excluded for corroles previously, but is apparently the most efficient mechanism to adapt to small central ions.

Abstract
Multiple photosynthetic reaction centres have been successfully constructed using strong supramolecular complexes of free base porphyrin polypeptides with lithium ion-encapsulated C60 (Li(+)@C60) as compared with those of C60. Efficient energy migration and electron transfer occur in the supramolecular complexes.

Abstract
The distance dependence of sequential electron transfer has been studied in six, vertical, linear supramolecular triads, (TTF-Ph(n)-py → AlPor-Ph(m)-C60, n = 0, 1 and m = 1, 2, 3), constructed using tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), aluminum(III) porphyrin (AlPor) and fullerene (C60) entities. The C60 and TTF units are bound to the Al center on opposite faces of the porphyrin; the C60 through a covalent axial bond using a benzoate spacer, and the TTF through a coordination bond via an appended pyridine. Time-resolved optical and EPR spectroscopic methods and computational studies are used to demonstrate that excitation of the porphyrin leads to step-wise, sequential electron transfer (ET) between TTF and C60, and to study the electron transfer rates and exchange coupling between the components of the triads as a function of the bridge lengths. Femtosecond transient absorption studies show that the rates of charge separation, k(CS) are in the range of 10(9)-10(11) s(-1), depending on the length of the bridges. The lifetimes of the charge-separated state TTF˙(+)-C₆₀˙⁻ obtained from transient absorbance experiments and the singlet lifetimes of the radical pairs obtained by time-resolved EPR are in good agreement with each other and range from 60-130 ns in the triads. The time-resolved EPR data also show that population of the triplet sublevels of the charge-separated state in the presence of a magnetic field leads to much longer lifetimes of >1 μs. The data show that a modest stabilization of the charge separation lifetime occurs in the triads. The attenuation factor β = 0.36 Å(-1) obtained from the exchange coupling values between TTF˙(+) and C₆₀˙⁻ is consistent with values reported in the literature for oligophenylene bridged TTF-C60 conjugates. The singlet charge recombination lifetime shows a much weaker dependence on the distance between the donor and acceptor, suggesting that a simple superexchange model is not sufficient to describe the back reaction.

Abstract
Charge-transfer (CT) π-complexes are formed between planar porphyrins and 1,4,5,8,9,12-hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) derivatives with large formation constants (e.g., 104 M-1), exhibiting broad CT absorption bands. The unusually large formation constants result from close face-to-face contact between two planar π-planes of porphyrins and HAT derivatives. The redox potentials of porphyrins and HAT derivatives measured by cyclic voltammetry indicate that porphyrins and HAT derivatives act as electron donors and acceptors, respectively. The formation of 1 : 1 CT complexes between porphyrins and HAT derivatives was examined by UV-vis, fluorescence and 1H NMR measurements in nonpolar solvents. The occurrence of unprecedented ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer from the porphyrin unit to the HAT unit in the CT π-complex was observed by femtosecond laser flash photolysis measurements. A highly linear aggregate composed of a planar porphyrin and an HAT derivative was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Abstract
In this mini-review, we have highlighted our works on metal complexes having saddle-distorted dodecaphenylporphyrin (DPP) and its derivative as ligands in the light of enhancement of the Lewis acidity of a metal center coordinated by the porphyrin. The important point through this mini-review is ill-overlap of the out-of-plane lone pairs of pyrrole nitrogen atoms with σ-orbitals of the metal center bound to the saddle-distorted porphyrin core. The enhanced Lewis acidity of the central metal ions enabled us to construct stable molecular complexes through axial coordination using metal–DPP (M(DPP)) moieties ( M = Mo V or Sn IV ) and molecular or ionic entities with Lewis-basic coordination sites, including Keggin-type polyoxometallates (POM), which are known to have weak Lewis basicity and thus hard to coordinate to metal ions. A discrete 1:2 complex with a Ru -substituted POM performs catalytic substrate oxidation reactions in organic solvents. A 1:1 complex between Sn IV ( DPP ) and a Keggin-type POM exhibited photoinduced electron transfer, in which the Sn IV ( DPP ) moiety acts as an electron donor and the POM as an electron acceptor. Besides POM, other electron acceptors, including μ3-oxo trinuclear Ru III clusters and anthraquinone, having carboxyl groups as a linker unit also formed stable complexes with DPP-metal complexes as axial ligands to perform photoinduced electron transfer. Successful photoreactions of the M(DPP)-acceptor complexes are mainly enabled by the enhanced Lewis acidity of the DPP-metal complexes for the stabilization of the assemblies and also by lowering the oxidation potential of the porphyrin ligand to gain larger driving force of electron transfer to form an electron-transfer state with avoiding intersystem crossing. The stability and photochemical behavior are in sharp contrast to those for metal complexes with planar porphyrins as ligands.

Abstract
Supramolecular integration of a saddle-distorted zinc(II) porphyrin complex, which has hydroxyl groups at the para-position of the four meso-aryl groups, has been demonstrated on the basis of hydrogen bonding among the peripheral hydroxyl groups. The hydrogen-bonding patterns were controlled by the recrystallization solvents and additives, and particularly, addition of a bifunctional ligand such as 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy). The coordination of bpy to form dinuclear Zn(II)-porphyrin complexes causes a conformational difference: the dimeric complex with four hydroxyl groups is in an eclipsed form, however, a derivative without hydroxyl groups is in a staggered form due to the presence or absence of the intermolecular hydrogen bonding. In addition, the dimerization by the bpy coordination resulted in the expansion of the intermolecular space formed in the porphyrin networks, suggesting the potential to be applied for inclusion of guest molecules.

Abstract
Green tea polyphenols, (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), all showed antioxidative effect in liposomes for lipid oxidation initiated in the lipid phase (antioxidant efficiency EC > EGCG > ECG > EGC) or in the aqueous phase (EC ≫ EGC > EGCG > ECG) as monitored by the formation of conjugated dienes. For initiation in the lipid phase, β-carotene, itself active as an antioxidant, showed antagonism with the polyphenols (EC > ECG > EGCG > EGC). The Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC EGC > EGCG > ECG > EC) correlates with the lowest phenol O-H bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) as calculated by density functional theory (DFT). Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to assess the reducing power of the phenolic hydroxyls in corroboration with DFT calculations. For homogeneous (1:9 v/v methanol/chloroform) solution, the β-carotene radical cation reacted readily with each of the polyphenol monoanions (but not with the neutral polyphenols) with a rate approaching the diffusion limit for EC as studied by laser flash photolysis at 25 °C monitoring the radical cation at 950 nm. The rate constant did not correlate with polyphenol HOMO/LUMO energy gap (DFT calculations), and β-carotene was not regenerated by an electron transfer reaction (monitored at 500 nm). It is suggested that the β-carotene radical cation is rather reacting with the tea polyphenols through addition, as further evidenced by steady-state absorption spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS), in effect preventing regeneration of β-carotene as an active lipid phase antioxidant and leading to the observed antagonism.

Abstract
Nonplanar Sn(IV)-porphyrin complexes, [Sn(TMPP(Ph)(8))-Cl(2)] (1) and [Sn(TMPP(Ph)(8))(OMe)(2)] (2) (TMPP(Ph)(8): 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaphenylporphyrinato), were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods together with X-ray crystallography. Variable-temperature (1)H NMR study revealed that the coordination of the methoxo ligand of 2 is weak enough in solution to enhance the axial ligand exchange with a Keggin-type phosphotungstate (α-[PW(12)O(40)](3-)) due to the steric stress between the axial methoxo ligand and the peripheral phenyl groups of the porphyrin ligand. The formation of a novel 1:1 donor-acceptor complex, [Sn(TMPP(Ph)(8))(OMe)(α-[PW(12)O(40)])](2-) (4) was confirmed by (1)H NMR and UV-vis spectral titrations, and also by MALDI-TOF-MS measurements. Electrochemical measurements for the donor-acceptor complex in PhCN revealed that the Sn(IV)-TMPP(Ph)(8) moiety acts as an electron donor and the α-[PW(12)O(40)](3-) moiety acts as an electron acceptor and that the energy level of the electron-transfer (ET) state of the 1:1 complex (1.17 eV) is lower than that of the triplet excited states of the SnTMPP(Ph)(8) complex (1.31 eV). Femtosecond and nanosecond laser flash photolysis measurements indicate that intersystem crossing from the singlet excited sate to the triplet excited state occurs followed by intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer from the triplet excited state of the Sn(IV)-TMPP(Ph)(8) moiety to the α-[PW(12)O(40)](3-) moiety in the 1:1 complex in benzonitrile.
