Cellulose-Based Microparticles for Magnetically Controlled Optical Modulation and Sensing

Responsive Regulation of Energy Transfer in Lanthanide-Doped Nanomaterials Dispersed in Chiral Nematic Structure

The responsive control of energy transfer (ET) plays a key role in the broad applications of lanthanide-doped nanomaterials. Photonic crystals (PCs) are excellent materials for ET regulation. Among the numerous materials that can be used to fabricate PCs, chiral nematic liquid crystals are highly attractive due to their good photoelectric responsiveness and biocompatibility. Here, the mechanisms of ET and the photonic effect of chiral nematic structures on ET are introduced; the regulation methods of chiral nematic structures and the resulting changes in ET of lanthanide-doped nanomaterials are highlighted; and the challenges and promising opportunities for ET in chiral nematic structures are discussed.

Tuning Sugar-Based Chiral and Flower-Like Microparticles

Unique supermolecular structures as chiral and flower-like microparticles and the precise tuning of the morphologies hold immense promise for a variety of applications. Examples of such structures deriving from monosaccharides are still rare, and a general understanding is also lacking. Herein, it is shown that chiral, flower-like, or solid microparticles can be tuned by only using monosaccharide esters without external stimuli. Chiral "left-handed" (counterclockwise) and "right-handed" (clockwise) morphologies can be induced by d- and l-glucose stearoyl esters. In comparison, other monosaccharides, i.e., galactose, mannose, and xylose, cannot formed chiral particles and generated diverse other morphologies of the supermolecular microparticles based on their distinct molecular configurations. Due to the numbers of side chains and the bond orientations, microparticles with solid and porous flower-like morphologies can be obtained. While glucose and xylose esters only lead to solid microparticles, mannose and galactose generate porous flower-like particles. These findings suggest a general method to design and control the superstructures by using monosaccharide backbones with diverse molecular configurations.

Continuous microfluidic fabrication of anisotropic microparticles for enhanced wastewater purification

Anisotropic microparticles containing functional nanomaterials have attracted growing interest due to their enhanced performance in diverse applications ranging from catalysts to environmental remediation. However, the preparation of anisotropic microparticles with highly controlled morphologies and dimensions usually suffers from a limited material choice. Here, we develop a facile strategy to continuously prepare anisotropic microparticles with their shapes changing from spherical to pear-like, maraca-like and rod-like for enhanced water decontamination. Anisotropic microparticles are produced by deforming oil-droplet templates within microfibers and then locking their shapes via thermo/photo-polymerization. The sizes and geometries of the oil-droplet templates are precisely controlled by varying the fluid flow conditions. In addition, porous spherical and rod-like microparticles are functionalized for photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants by incorporating functional TiO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Compared to spherical microparticles with equal volume, functionalized rod-like microparticles exhibit better performance in removal of contaminants due to their larger specific surface area, which facilitates the contact between the loaded catalysts and organic pollutants. Moreover, the magnetic rod-like microparticles can be easily recovered and reused without deterioration of catalytic performance. The proposed strategy in this study is useful for producing anisotropic microparticles with well-tailored shapes via different polymerization methods and extending their potential applications.

Applications of Cellulose Nanomaterials in Stimuli-Responsive Optics

As one of the most abundant biopolymers, cellulose has been a basic but essential building block of human society, with its use dating back thousands of years. With recent developments in nanotechnology and increasing environmental concerns, cellulose-based nanomaterials are now gaining attention as promising green material candidates for many high-value applications as a result of their biocompatibility and advantageous physical and chemical properties. In particular, cellulose nanocrystals are notable for their optical properties that can respond to various environmental stimuli as a result of the unique chiral nematic structure of the material. Compositing cellulosic materials with functional polymers, small molecules, and other nanomaterials can further stabilize and amplify these responsive optical signals and introduce multiple new functionalities. On the basis of these capabilities, many advanced applications of cellulose nanomaterials have been proposed, including chemical sensors, photonic papers, decorative coatings, data security, and smart textiles. In this review, we discuss and summarize recent advances in this emerging field of stimuli-responsive optics based on cellulose nanomaterials.
