Protective Effects of Ferulic Acid on Metabolic Syndrome: A Comprehensive Review

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex disease in which protein, fat, carbohydrates and other substances are metabolized in a disorderly way. Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic acid found in many vegetables, fruits, cereals and Chinese herbs that has a strong effect on ameliorating MetS. However, no review has summarized the mechanisms of FA in treating MetS. This review collected articles related to the effects of FA on ameliorating the common symptoms of MetS, such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and obesity, from different sources involving Web of Science, PubMed and Google Scholar, etc. This review summarizes the potential mechanisms of FA in improving various metabolic disorders according to the collected articles. FA ameliorates diabetes via the inhibition of the expressions of PEPCK, G6Pase and GP, the upregulation of the expressions of GK and GS, and the activation of the PI3K/Akt/GLUT4 signaling pathway. The decrease of blood pressure is related to the endothelial function of the aortas and RAAS. The improvement of the lipid spectrum is mediated via the suppression of the HMG-Co A reductase, by promoting the ACSL1 expression and by the regulation of the factors associated with lipid metabolism. Furthermore, FA inhibits obesity by upregulating the MEK/ERK pathway, the MAPK pathway and the AMPK signaling pathway and by inhibiting SREBP-1 expression. This review can be helpful for the development of FA as an appreciable agent for MetS treatment.

Nutritional quality and health benefits of chickpea (Cicer arietinumL.): a review

Chickpea (Cicer arietinumL.) is an important pulse crop grown and consumed all over the world, especially in the Afro-Asian countries. It is a good source of carbohydrates and protein, and protein quality is considered to be better than other pulses. Chickpea has significant amounts of all the essential amino acids except sulphur-containing amino acids, which can be complemented by adding cereals to the daily diet. Starch is the major storage carbohydrate followed by dietary fibre, oligosaccharides and simple sugars such as glucose and sucrose. Although lipids are present in low amounts, chickpea is rich in nutritionally important unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic and oleic acids. β-Sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol are important sterols present in chickpea oil. Ca, Mg, P and, especially, K are also present in chickpea seeds. Chickpea is a good source of important vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, folate and the vitamin A precursor β-carotene. As with other pulses, chickpea seeds also contain anti-nutritional factors which can be reduced or eliminated by different cooking techniques. Chickpea has several potential health benefits, and, in combination with other pulses and cereals, it could have beneficial effects on some of the important human diseases such as CVD, type 2 diabetes, digestive diseases and some cancers. Overall, chickpea is an important pulse crop with a diverse array of potential nutritional and health benefits.

Antihypercholesterolaemic effect of ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) in rats

INTRODUCTION

Many herbal medicinal products have potential hypocholesterolaemic activity and encouraging safety profiles. However, only a limited amount of clinical research exists to support their efficacy.

AIM OF THE WORK

The present study was designed to evaluate the antihypercholesterolaemic effects of aqueous ginger (Zingiber officinale) infusion in hypercholesterolaemic rat models.

METHODS

48 rats were used throughout the experiment, which were divided into six groups, eight animals each as follows: normal control group (normal rats which fed with standard diet). After induction of hypercholesterolaemia by feeding rats with high cholesterol diet, the remaining rats were divided into five groups: group 1, hypercholesterolaemic control group (hypercholesterolaemic rats group); groups 2, 3 and 4, rats were given aqueous infusion of ginger (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, respectively) orally; and group 5, rats were given atorvastatin (0.18 mg/kg) orally as a reference antihypercholesterolaemic drug. The blood was obtained from all groups of rats after being lightly anaesthetized with ether and the following lipid profile [serum total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-C and triglyceride levels] was measured at zero time and 2 and 4 weeks after ginger and atorvastatin treatment, and the risk ratio (TC/HDL-cholesterol) was assessed.

RESULTS

The results revealed that the hypercholesterolaemic rats treated with aqueous ginger infusion in the three doses used after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment induce significant decrease in all lipid profile parameters which were measured and improved the risk ratio.

Ferulic acid prevents pathological and functional abnormalities of the kidney in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty diabetic rats

We investigated the preventive effects of ferulic acid (FA) and alpha-tocopherol (AT) on the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) and Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats were used as type 2 diabetes and non-diabetes models, respectively. Two-thirds of the OLETF rats were fed 0.2% FA-containing or 0.5% AT-containing chow. Diabetic nephropathy was assessed based on urinary protein excretion and pathological changes which were scored based on the percentages of extracellular matrix area in the glomerular area. Furthermore, renal messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) was quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. After 12 weeks of FA- or AT-supplementation, urinary protein in untreated-OLETF group was significantly higher than that in LETO group, thus FA-supplementation significantly decreased urinary protein excretion. Pathological scores in FA-supplemented group were significantly lower than those in untreated OLETF group. Supplementation with either FA or AT significantly prevented the elevation of TGF-beta1 mRNA expression caused by diabetes. Treatment with neither FA nor AT had a significant effect on COX-2 or ICAM-1 mRNA expressions. We have demonstrated the preventative effects of FA on diabetic nephropathy via suppression of TGF-beta1 upregulation, furthermore FA may be more potent than AT.

Non-nutrient bioactive substances of pulses

Pulses supply many bioactive substances found in minor amounts in food, but which may have significant metabolic and/or physiological effects. These compounds have long been classified as antinutritional factors, but many studies have reconsidered their impact on health. Some could play a role in the prevention of the major diseases of affluent societies. As these compounds can be beneficial or adverse, depending on conditions, an assessment of their various physiological effects is necessary to determine whether they should be preserved or eliminated in each main nutritional situation.

Rice bran oil and gamma-oryzanol in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinaemias and other conditions

Diet is the first (and sometimes the only) therapeutic approach to hyperlipoproteinaemias. Rice bran oil and its main components (unsaturated fatty acids, triterpene alcohols, phytosterols, tocotrienols, alpha-tocopherol) have demonstrated an ability to improve the plasma lipid pattern of rodents, rabbits, non-human primates and humans, reducing total plasma cholesterol and triglyceride concentration and increasing the high density lipoprotein cholesterol level. Other potential properties of rice bran oil and gamma-oryzanol, studied both in vitro and in animal models, include modulation of pituitary secretion, inhibition of gastric acid secretion, antioxidant action and inhibition of platelet aggregation. This paper reviews the available data on the pharmacology and toxicology of rice bran oil and its main components with particular attention to those studies relating to plasma lipid altering effects.
