Towards preventing the false alarms in indoor physical intrusion detector system and the incorporation of intruder immobilizer system

Indoor physical intrusion detector systems are rendered ineffective and inefficient if the frequency of false alarms is high. The sensor technology deployed and the sensor architecture implemented determines the sensitivity of the intrusion alarm systems and the rate of false alarms. Here we report the development of an innovative smart reliable, easily deployable, indoor physical intrusion detector and intruder immobilizer system for security applications. The developed device implements two ultrasonic sensors positioned strategically apart and combined by AND logic gate to detect only intruders and preventing false triggers. A gas canister containing lachrymatory agents is connected to the circuit in such a manner that a solenoid switch activates the discharging of the gas upon the enabling of the circuit when an intruder is detected. Through this arrangement, the intruder is rendered immobile and harmless before apprehension. The device also activates an alarm simultaneously to alert the users. The developed device creates a secured environment and is suitable for homes, apartments, banks, warehouses, supermarkets especially in low income countries of Africa.

The development of a wearable goggle echolocation device to support people who are visually impaired with unhindered and unaided movement

The mobility of people with severe visual impairment is limited affecting their comfort and productivity. There are about 45 million people who are blind with global financial burden and annual global cost of productivity estimated to be USD411 billion according to World Health Organization report of 2024. The contributions of the people who are visually impaired to the gross domestic product (GDP) can be enhanced deploying technology. A novel sensory substitution device that enables people who are visually impaired or blind to fairly hear objects in place of seeing objects is proposed. The wearable echolocation device was developed using three ultrasonic sensors, one placed in the right, left, and middle of the goggle with each connected to a buzzer. Audible compass is implemented in the circuitry to guide the user on the direction while walking. In this configuration, the user is guided and alerted of any obstacle within the field of coverage and so can navigate to any desired destination unaided without relying on internet. The developed prototype is easy to use and does not require complex training. The echolocation device was tested by ten enrolled people that are visually impaired or blind who validated its effectiveness and efficiency. The device is comparatively low cost, noninvasive, energy efficient and mass producible.

Review of linear and circular approaches to on-site domestic wastewater treatment: Analysis of research achievements, trends and distance to target

This comprehensive review critically assesses traditional and emerging technologies for domestic wastewater treatment and reuse, focusing on the transition from conventional centralised systems to innovative decentralised approaches. Through an extensive literature search on domestic wastewater systems serving a population equivalent of less than or equal to 10, the study juxtaposes linear and circular methods and highlights their impact on urban water management and the environment. The papers reviewed were classified into five categories: Environmental studies, economic studies, social studies, technological studies, and reviews and policy papers. The analysis was carried out separately for linear and circular approaches within each category. In addition, the maturity of the technology (lab/pilot or full-scale application) was taken into account in the analysis. The research landscape is shown to be evolving towards circular methods that promise sustainability through resource recovery, despite the dominance of linear perspectives. The lack of clear progress in decentralised technologies, the scarcity of circularity assessments and the challenges of urban integration are highlighted. Operational reliability, regulatory compliance and policy support are identified as key barriers to the adoption of decentralised systems. While conventional pollutants and their environmental impacts are well addressed for linear systems, the study of emerging pollutants is in its infancy. Conclusions on the impact of these hazardous pollutants are tentative and cautious. Social and economic studies are mainly based on virtual scenarios, which are useful research tools for achieving sustainability goals. The conceptual frameworks for assessing the social dimension need further refinement to be effective. The paper argues for a balanced integration of centralisation and decentralisation, proposing a dual strategy that emphasizes the development of interoperable technologies. It calls for further research, policy development and widespread implementation to promote decentralised solutions in urban water management and pave the way for sustainable urban ecosystems.

Advancing sanitary surveillance: Innovating a live-feed sewer monitoring framework for effective water level and chamber cover detections

Efficient sanitation system management relies on vigilant sewage surveillance to uphold environmental hygiene. The absence of robust monitoring infrastructure jeopardizes unimpeded conduit flow, leading to floods and contamination. The accumulation of harmful gases in sewer chambers, coupled with tampered lids, compounds sewer network challenges, resulting in structural damage, disruptions, and safety risks from accidents and gas inhalation. Notably, even vehicular transit is vulnerable, facing collisions due to inadequately secured manholes. The core objective of this research was to deconstruct and synthesize a prototype blueprint for a live-feed sewer monitoring framework (LSMF). This involves creating a data gathering nexus (DGN) and empirically assessing diverse wireless sensing implements (WSI) for precision. Simultaneously, a geographic information matrix (GIM) was developed with algorithms to detect sewer surges, blockages, and missing manhole covers. Three scrutinized sensors-the LiDar TF-Luna, laser TOF400 VL53L1X, and ultrasonic JSN-SR04T-were evaluated for their ability to measure water levels in sewer vaults. The results showed that the TF-Luna LiDar sensor performed favorably within the 1.0-5.0 m range, with a standard deviation of 0.44-1.15. The TOF400 laser sensor ranked second, with a more variable standard deviation of up to 104 as obstacle distance increased. In contrast, the JSN-SR04T ultrasonic sensor exhibited lower standard deviation but lacked consistency, maintaining readings of 0.22-0.23 m within the 2.0-5.0 m span. The insights from this study provide valuable guidance for sustainable solutions to sewer surveillance challenges. Moreover, employing a logarithmic function, TF-Luna Benewake exhibited reliability at approximately 84.5%, while TOF400 VL53L1X adopted an exponential equation, boasting reliability approaching approximately 89.6%. With this navigational tool, TF-Luna Benewake maintained accuracy within ±10 cm for distances ranging from 8 to 10 m, showcasing its exceptional performance.
