Role of Femtosecond Pulsed Laser-Induced Atomic Redistribution in Bimetallic Au-Pd Nanorods on Optoelectronic and Catalytic Properties

Construction of Au-modified CN-based donor-acceptor system coupled with dual photothermal effects for efficient photoreduction of carbon dioxide

Conversion of CO2 into high value-added fuels through the photothermal effect is an effective approach for utilizing solar energy. In this study, we prepared the CN-based photocatalyst Py-CTN-Au with both donor-acceptor (D-A) system and dual photothermal effects using a simple two-step method involving calcination and photo-deposition. Real-time monitoring with a thermal imaging camera revealed that Py-CTN-Au0.5 achieved a maximum stable temperature of 180 °C, which was approximately 1.2 times higher than that of Py-CTN (155 °C) and 1.9 times higher than that of g-CN (95 °C) under the same reaction conditions. Under the optimized reaction conditions, Py-CTN-Au0.5 exhibited a CO release rate of 30.59 umol g-1 after 4 h of reaction, which was 7.3 times higher than that of pure g-CN (4.18 umol g-1). The D-A system not only facilitated the separation and transformation of charge carriers but also induced a photothermal effect to accelerate the photoreduction of CO2. Additionally, the cocatalyst Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) further enhanced the charge carrier dynamics and photothermal effect by increasing the built-in electric field intensity and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, respectively. The dual photothermal effects resulting from the non-radiative photon conversion of the D-A structure and the Au NPs LSPR effect, along with the enhanced charge carrier dynamics, catalyzed the efficient photoreduction of CO2. DFT simulations were used to confirm the effect of D-A system and Au NPs. In-situ FTIR results demonstrated that the synergistic photothermal effect promoted the formation of the key intermediate species COOH*, which is beneficial for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. This study provides valuable insights into the multiple photothermal synergistic effects in photocatalytic reactions.

Merging gold plasmonic nanoparticles and L-proline inside a MOF for plasmon-induced visible light chiral organocatalysis at low temperature

Light-driven asymmetric photocatalysis represents a straightforward approach in modern organic chemistry. In comparison to the homogeneous one, heterogeneous asymmetric photocatalysis has the advantages of easy catalyst separation, recovery, and reuse, thus being cost- and time-effective. Here, we demonstrate how plasmon-active centers (gold nanoparticles - AuNPs) allow visible light triggering of chiral catalyst (proline) in model aldol reaction between acetone and benzaldehyde. The metal-organic framework UiO-66-NH2 was used as an advanced host platform for the loading of proline and AuNPs and their stabilization in spatial proximity. Aldol reactions were carried out at a low temperature (-20 °C) under light illumination which resulted in 91% ee with a closed-to-quantitative yield, 4.5 times higher than that without light (i.e. in the absence of plasmon triggering). A set of control experiments and quantum chemical modeling revealed that the plasmon assistance proceeds through hot electron excitation followed by an interaction with an enamine with the formation of anion radical species. We also demonstrated the high stability of the proposed system in multiple catalytic cycles without leaching metal ions, which makes our approach especially promising for heterogeneous asymmetric photocatalysis.

From Multi- to Single-Hollow Trimetallic Nanocrystals by Ultrafast Heating

Metal nanocrystals (NCs) display unique physicochemical features that are highly dependent on nanoparticle dimensions, anisotropy, structure, and composition. The development of synthesis methodologies that allow us to tune such parameters finely emerges as crucial for the application of metal NCs in catalysis, optical materials, or biomedicine. Here, we describe a synthetic methodology to fabricate hollow multimetallic heterostructures using a combination of seed-mediated growth routes and femtosecond-pulsed laser irradiation. The envisaged methodology relies on the coreduction of Ag and Pd ions on gold nanorods (Au NRs) to form Au@PdAg core-shell nanostructures containing small cavities at the Au-PdAg interface. The excitation of Au@PdAg NRs with low fluence femtosecond pulses was employed to induce the coalescence and growth of large cavities, forming multihollow anisotropic Au@PdAg nanostructures. Moreover, single-hollow alloy AuPdAg could be achieved in high yield by increasing the irradiation energy. Advanced electron microscopy techniques, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) tomography, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and finite differences in the time domain (FDTD) simulations allowed us to characterize the morphology, structure, and elemental distribution of the irradiated NCs in detail. The ability of the reported synthesis route to fabricate multimetallic NCs with unprecedented hollow nanostructures offers attractive prospects for the fabrication of tailored high-entropy alloy nanoparticles.

Plasmonic and catalytic Au NBP@AgPd nanoframes for highly efficient photocatalytic reactions

Heterogeneous metal nanostructures with excellent plasmonic performance and catalytic activity are urgently needed to realize efficient light-driven catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate the preparation of hollow Au nanobipyramid (NBP)@AgPd nanostructures by employing Au NBP@Ag nanorods as templates. The products could transform from Au NBP@AgPd nanoframes to nanocages, along with the redshift and broadening of the plasmon wavelength. Particularly, the plasmon intensity of these nanostructures remained considerable among the shape evolution process. Based on the selective absorption of CTAB, the Ag atoms on the side surfaces of the Au NBP@Ag nanorods were employed as the sacrificial templates to reduce Pd atoms through galvanic replacement. The reduced Pd and Ag atoms produced through the reduction reaction were preferably co-deposited on the corners and edges at the early stage and later deposited directly on the defect sites of the side facets, as more Ag atoms were released. The discontinued distribution of the Pd atoms gives an opportunity to etch away the Ag atoms in the cores, leading to the formation of hollow Au NBP@AgPd nanostructures after the etching process. It is worth noting that the deposition of the ultrathin AgPd nanoframe had little influence on the plasmonic properties of Au NBPs, as verified by electrodynamic simulations. The Au NBP@AgPd nanoframe showed great photocatalytic activity toward Suzuki coupling reactions under laser irradiation. Taken together, these results suggest that the hot electrons successfully transfer from Au NBP to the AgPd nanoframes to participate in the photocatalytic reactions. This study affords a promising route for the synthesis of anisotropic bimetallic nanostructures with excellent plasmonic performances.

Moving beyond Ti2C3Tx MXene to Pt-Decorated TiO2@TiC Core-Shell via Pulsed Laser in Reshaping Modification for Accelerating Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics

Phase engineering of nanocatalysts on specific facets is critical not only for enhancing catalytic activity but also for intensely understanding the impact of facet-based phase engineering on electrocatalytic reactions. In this study, we successfully reshaped a two-dimensional (2D) MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) obtained by etching Ti₃AlC₂ MAX via a pulsed laser irradiation in liquid (PLIL) process. We produced a TiO₂@TiC core-shell structure in spheres with sizes of 200-350 nm, and then ∼2 nm ultrasmall Pt NPs were decorated on the surface of the TiO₂@TiC core-shell using the single-step PLIL method. These advances allow for a significant increase in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity under visible light illumination. The effect of optimal Pt loading on PLIL time was identified, and the resulting Pt/TiO₂@TiC/Pt-5 min sample demonstrated outstanding electrochemical and photoelectrochemical performance. The photoelectrochemical HER activity over Pt/TiO₂@TiC/Pt-5 min catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 48 mV at 10 mA/cm² and an ultralow Tafel slope of 54.03 mV/dec with excellent stability of over 50 h, which is hydrogen production activity even superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalysts (55 mV, 62.45 mV/dec). This investigation not only serves as a potential for laser-dependent phase engineering but also provides a reliable strategy for the rational design and fabrication of highly effective nanocatalysts.

Photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol on trimetallic PdAgCu nanospheres enhanced by surface plasmon resonance

The notable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of some metals has been applied to improve the efficiency of alcohol oxidation reactions, whereas the comprehensive investigation of Cu-assisted photoelectrocatalysis remains challenging. We herein successfully prepared trimetallic PdAgCu nanospheres (NSs) with abundant surface bulges for the advanced ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and compared them with bimetallic PdAg NSs to investigate the performance enhancement mechanism. Impressively, the as-optimized PdAgCu NSs exhibited superb mass activity and electrochemical stability. Moreover, under visible light illumination, the mass activity of PdAgCu NSs increased to 1.62 times compared to that in the dark, and in contrast, the mass activity of PdAg NSs only increased to 1.48 times that in the dark. A mechanistic study indicated that the incorporation of Cu not only strengthens the whole SPR effect of PdAgCu NSs but also further modifies the electronic structure of Pd. This work highlighted that the incorporation of Cu into PdAg NSs further enhanced the photoelectrocatalytic performance and increased noble metal atom utilization, which may provide guidance to fabricate novel and promising nanocatalysts in the field of photoelectrocatalysis.

Active Site Engineering on Plasmonic Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalysis

Plasmonic nanostructures have shown immense potential in photocatalysis because of their distinct photochemical properties associated with tunable photoresponses and strong light-matter interactions. The introduction of highly active sites is essential to fully exploit the potential of plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis, considering the inferior intrinsic activities of typical plasmonic metals. This review focuses on active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance, wherein the active sites are classified into four types (i.e., metallic sites, defect sites, ligand-grafted sites, and interface sites). The synergy between active sites and plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis is discussed in detail after briefly introducing the material synthesis and characterization methods. Active sites can promote the coupling of solar energy harvested by plasmonic metal to catalytic reactions in the form of local electromagnetic fields, hot carriers, and photothermal heating. Moreover, efficient energy coupling potentially regulates the reaction pathway by facilitating the excited state formation of reactants, changing the status of active sites, and creating additional active sites using photoexcited plasmonic metals. Afterward, the application of active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures in emerging photocatalytic reactions is summarized. Finally, a summary and perspective of the existing challenges and future opportunities are presented. This review aims to deliver some insights into plasmonic photocatalysis from the perspective of active sites, expediting the discovery of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.

Zero Energy Heating of Solvent with Network-Structured Solar-Thermal Material: Eco-Friendly Palladium Catalysis of the Suzuki Reaction

Solar-thermal materials absorb sunlight and convert it into heat, which is released into the surrounding medium. Utilization of solar energy for solvent heating can be a potential method of eco-friendly organic reactions. However, to date, significant heating of the entire volume of a solvent by 1 sun illumination has not been reported. In the present work, a network structure of solar-thermal materials has been proposed for zero energy heating of a solvent under 1 sun illumination. A network-structured solar-thermal material with an additional catalytic function was fabricated by sputtering palladium into a melamine sponge. The nanocrystalline palladium-decorated melamine sponge (Pd-sponge) has excellent sunlight absorption properties in the entire wavelength range that enable efficient solar-thermal conversion. The Pd-sponge can reduce heat loss to the surroundings by effectively blocking thermal radiation from the heated solvent. The temperature of the reaction solution with the ethanol-water mixture filled in the Pd-sponge increased from 23 to 59 °C under 1 sun illumination. The elevated temperature of the reaction solutions by solar-thermal conversion successfully accelerated the heterogeneous Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reactions with high conversions. Easy and low-energy-consuming multicycle use of the solar-thermal and catalytic properties of the Pd-sponge has also been demonstrated.

Single-Particle Insights into Plasmonic Hot Carrier Separation Augmenting Photoelectrochemical Ethanol Oxidation with Photocatalytically Synthesized Pd-Au Bimetallic Nanorods

Understanding the nature of hot carrier pathways following surface plasmon excitation of heterometallic nanostructures and their mechanistic prevalence during photoelectrochemical oxidation of complex hydrocarbons, such as ethanol, remains challenging. This work studies the fate of carriers from Au nanorods before and after the presence of reductively photodeposited Pd at the single-particle level using scattering and emission spectroscopy, along with ensemble photoelectrochemical methods. A sub-2 nm epitaxial Pd⁰ shell was reductively grown onto colloidal Au nanorods via hot carriers generated from surface plasmon resonance excitation in the presence of [PdCl₄]^2-. These bimetallic Pd-Au nanorod architectures exhibited 14% quenched emission quantum yields and 9% augmented plasmon damping determined from their scattering spectra compared to the bare Au nanorods, consistent with injection/separation of intraband hot carriers into the Pd. Absorbed photon-to-current efficiency in photoelectrochemical ethanol oxidation was enhanced 50× from 0.00034% to 0.017% due to the photodeposited Pd. Photocurrent during ethanol oxidation improved 13× under solar-simulated AM1.5G and 40× for surface plasmon resonance-targeted irradiation conditions after photodepositing Pd, consistent with enhanced participation of intraband-excited sp-band holes and desorption of ethanol oxidation reaction intermediates owing to photothermal effects.

Toroidal dipole-modulated dipole-dipole double-resonance in colloidal gold rod-cup nanocrystals for improved SERS and second-harmonic generation

Colloidal metal nanocrystals (NCs) show great potential in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy owing to their attractive and structure-depended plasmonic properties. Herein, unique Au rod-cup NCs, where Au nanocups are embedded on the one or two ends of Au nanorods (NRs), are successfully prepared for the first time via a controllable wet-chemistry strategy. The Au rod-cup NCs possess multiple plasmon modes including transverse and longitudinal electric dipole (TED and LED), magnetic dipole (MD), and toroidal dipole (TD) modulated LED resonances, producing large extinction cross-section and huge near-field enhancements for plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy. Particularly, Au rod-cup NCs with two embedded cups show excellent surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performance than Au NRs (75.6-fold enhancement excited at 633 nm) on detecting crystal violet owing to the strong electromagnetic hotspots synergistically induced by MD, LED, and TED-based plasmon coupling between Au cup and rod. Moreover, the strong TD-modulated dipole-dipole double-resonance and MD modes in Au rod-cup NCs bring a 37.3-fold enhancement of second-harmonic generation intensity compared with bare Au NRs, because they can efficiently harvest photoenergy at fundamental frequency and generate large near-field enhancements at second-harmonic wavelength. These findings provide a strategy for designing optical nanoantennas for plasmon-enhanced applications based on multiple plasmon modes.

Serum Metabolic Fingerprints on Bowl-Shaped Submicroreactor Chip for Chemotherapy Monitoring

Chemotherapy is a primary cancer treatment strategy, the monitoring of which is critical to enhancing the survival rate and quality of life of cancer patients. However, current chemotherapy monitoring mainly relies on imaging tools with inefficient sensitivity and radiation invasiveness. Herein, we develop the bowl-shaped submicroreactor chip of Au-loaded 3-aminophenol formaldehyde resin (denoted as APF-bowl&Au) with a specifically designed structure and Au loading content. The obtained APF-bowl&Au, used as the matrix of laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS), possesses an enhanced localized electromagnetic field for strengthened small metabolite detection. The APF-bowl&Au enables the extraction of serum metabolic fingerprints (SMFs), and machine learning of the SMFs achieves chemotherapy monitoring of ovarian cancer with area-under-the-curve (AUC) of 0.81-0.98. Furthermore, a serum metabolic biomarker panel is preliminarily identified, exhibiting gradual changes as the chemotherapy cycles proceed. This work provides insights into the development of nanochips and contributes to a universal detection platform for chemotherapy monitoring.

Managing the Nitrogen Cycle via Plasmonic (Photo)Electrocatalysis: Toward Circular Economy

As renewable energy sources are either intermittent in nature or remote in location, developing cost-effective, sustainable, modular systems and technologies to store and transport renewables at an industrial scale is imperative. Storing cheap renewable electricity into chemical bonds (i.e., chemical energy storage) could be a transformative opportunity for reliable and resilient grid energy storage. This approach enables renewables to be stored and shipped similarly to fossil fuels. Currently, the chemical industry primarily consumes fossil feedstock as an energy source, which has been the standard for over a century. A paradigm shift is required to move toward a more sustainable route for chemical synthesis by electrifying and decarbonizing the modern chemical industry. As renewable electricity costs decrease, (photo)electrosynthesis is gaining interest for synthesizing high-value and high-energy fuels and molecules in a clean, sustainable, and decentralized manner.The nitrogen cycle is one of the Earth's most critical biogeochemical cycles since nitrogen is a vital element for all living organisms. Artificial nitrogen fixation via a (photo)electrochemical system powered by renewables provides an alternative route to resource- and carbon-intensive thermochemical processes. (Photo)electrochemical nitrogen fixation at a large scale necessitates the discovery of active, selective, and stable heterogeneous (photo)electrocatalysts. In addition, the use of advanced in situ and operando spectroscopic techniques is needed to pinpoint the underlying reaction mechanisms. The selectivity of nitrogen (N₂) molecules on the catalyst surface and suppressing thermodynamically favorable side reactions (e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction) are the main bottlenecks in improving the rate of (photo)electrochemical nitrogen fixation in aqueous solutions. The rational design of electrode, electrolyte, and reactors is required to weaken the strong nitrogen-nitrogen triple bond (N≡N) at or near ambient conditions. This Account covers our group's recent advances in synthesizing shape-controlled hybrid plasmonic nanoparticles, including plasmonic-semiconductor and plasmonic-transition metal nanostructures with increased surface areas. The nanocatalysts' selectivity and activity toward nitrogen conversion are benchmarked in liquid- and gas-phase electrochemical systems. We leverage operando vibrational-type spectroscopy (i.e., surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)) to identify intermediate species relevant to nitrogen fixation at the electrode-electrolyte interface to gain mechanistic insights into reaction mechanisms, leading to the discovery of more efficient catalysts. Operando SERS revealed that the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to ammonia on hybrid plasmonic-transition metal nanoparticle surfaces (e.g., Pd-Ag) occurs through an associative mechanism. In the NRR process, hydrazine (N₂H₄) is consumed as an intermediate species. A femtosecond pulsed laser is used to synthesize hybrid plasmonic photocatalysts with homogeneously distributed Pd atoms on a Au nanorod surface, resulting in enhanced optoelectronic and catalytic properties. The overarching goal is to develop modular photoelectrochemical systems for long-duration renewable energy storage. In the context of nitrogen fixation, we aim to propose strategies to manage the nitrogen cycle through the interconversion of N₂ and active nitrogen-containing compounds (e.g., NH₃, NO_x), enabling a circular nitrogen economy with sustainable and positive social and economic outcomes. The versatile approaches presented in this Account can inform future opportunities in (photo)electrochemical energy conversion systems and solar fuel-based applications.
