Abstract
Modification of light-harvesting units with anchoring groups for surface attachment often compromises light-harnessing properties. Herein, a series of [donor-acceptor-anchor] platinum(II) diimine (bis-)acetylides was developed in order to systematically compare the effect of conjugated versus electronically decoupled modes of attachment of protected anchoring groups on the photophysical properties of light-harvesting units. The first examples of "decoupled" phosphonate diimine PtII complexes are reported, and their properties are compared and contrasted to those of carboxylate analogues studied by a diversity of methods. Ultrafast time-resolved IR and transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that all complexes have a charge-transfer (CT) lowest excited state with lifetimes between 2 and 14 ns. Vibrational signatures and dynamics of CT states were identified; the assignment of electronic states and their vibrational origin was aided by TDDFT calculations. Ultrafast energy redistribution accompanied by structural changes was directly captured in the CT states. A significant difference between the structures of the electronic ground and CT excited states, as well as differences in the structural reorganisation in the complexes bearing directly attached or electronically decoupled anchoring groups, was discovered. This work demonstrates that decoupling of the anchoring group from the light-harvesting core by a saturated spacer is an easy approach to combine surface attachment with high reduction potential and ten times longer lifetime of the CT excited state of the light-absorbing unit, and retain electron-transfer photoreactivity essential for light-harvesting applications.

Abstract
Selective, robust and cost-effective chemical sensors for detecting small volatile-organic compounds (VOCs) have widespread applications in industry, healthcare and environmental monitoring. Here we design a Pt(II) pincer-type material with selective absorptive and emissive responses to methanol and water. The yellow anhydrous form converts reversibly on a subsecond timescale to a red hydrate in the presence of parts-per-thousand levels of atmospheric water vapour. Exposure to methanol induces a similarly-rapid and reversible colour change to a blue methanol solvate. Stable smart coatings on glass demonstrate robust switching over 104 cycles, and flexible microporous polymer membranes incorporating microcrystals of the complex show identical vapochromic behaviour. The rapid vapochromic response can be rationalised from the crystal structure, and in combination with quantum-chemical modelling, we provide a complete microscopic picture of the switching mechanism. We discuss how this multiscale design approach can be used to obtain new compounds with tailored VOC selectivity and spectral responses.

Abstract
The silylated organochalcogen reagents 1,2-(Me3SiSCH2)2C6H4, and 1,2-(Me3SiSeCH2)2C6H4, were prepared from the corresponding organobromides and lithium trimethylsilanechalcogenolate Li[ESiMe3] (E = S, Se). They have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, (77)Se) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. and react under mild conditions with (1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane)palladium(ii) chloride, [PdCl2(dppp)], to provide the dinuclear organochalcogenolate-bridged complexes [(dppp)2Pd2-μ-κ(2)S-{1,2-(SCH2)2C6H4}]X2, []X2 and [(dppp)2Pd2-μ-κ(2)Se-{1,2-(SeCH2)2C6H4}]X2, []X2 (X = Cl, Br) in good yield, respectively. Furthermore, the tetranuclear palladium complex [(dppp)4Pd4-μ-κ(4)S-{1,2,4,5-(SCH2)4C6H2}]X4, []X4 (X = Cl, Br) can be synthesized from the reaction of the tetrathiotetrasilane 1,2,4,5-(Me3SiSCH2)4C6H2, and [PdCl2(dppp)]. The structures of []X2, []X2 and []X4 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. A variety of NMR experiments including two-dimensional homonuclear and heteronuclear correlated spectra were used to probe the solution behaviour of the dinuclear complexes in more detail. These complexes were further characterized by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, and for []X2 and []X2, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy.

Abstract
The reaction of the cyclometallated complex [PtCl(N^C)(dmso)], 1 (N^C represents the cyclometallated Schiff base, benzylidene-2,6-diisopropylphenylamine), with 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene, dppf, bis(diphenylphosphino)methane, dppm, or 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, dppe, in a 2 : 1 ratio or an equimolar ratio using acetone as the solvent produced the corresponding binuclear or mononuclear diphosphine platinum complexes. In the case of the mononuclear complexes, the diphosphines act as either a bidentate ligand or a monodentate ligand depending on the size of the bite angle of the diphosphines, while in the case of the binuclear complexes, the diphosphines act as a bridging ligand between the two metal centres. The solid state structures of some of the binuclear as well as mononuclear species are reported. The mononuclear derivatives were found to show different behaviour in solution and in the solid state when compared to the binuclear analogues. This behaviour is also influenced by the nature of the diphosphine ligands employed.

Abstract
A series of tridentate cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes (C(∧)N*N)PtL (L = Cl or acetylide) featuring a fused five-six-membered metallacycle were synthesized. The structure of the complexes was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. In contrast to the C(∧)N(∧)N platinum complexes with a fused five-five-membered metallacycle, the platinum coordination in C(∧)N*N complexes is much closer to a square planar geometry. The photophysical properties of the complexes were studied. The geometrical change from C(∧)N(∧)N to C(∧)N*N led to a substantial improvement in phosphorescence efficiency of the complexes with an acetylide ligand in solution at room temperature. For example, the quantum yield of (C(∧)N*N)PtCCPh was measured to be 56%, demonstrating a big jump from 4% reported for (C(∧)N(∧)N)PtCCPh.
