Abstract
Investigating and manipulating the ion-molecule reactions within the ionization source of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) or mass spectrometry can contribute to developing advanced ionization sources and novel analytical techniques. In this study, a pressure-tunable photoionization tandem ion mobility spectrometer (PI-tandem-IMS) was developed to investigate the ionization suppression caused by unusual proton transfer reactions in dual-analyte systems in which high proton affinity (PA) ions are deprotonated by low PA molecules. The proton transfer reaction mechanisms in the toluene-acetone and toluene-ethanol systems were studied. The experimental results showed the linear correlation between the ln(SX2H+·K0(T+)/ST+·K0(X2H+) + 1) and the square of the reactant concentration cX2, as well as the cubic power of the pressure p3. Based on this, the generation of the proton-bound dimers in the toluene-acetone and toluene-ethanol systems was assigned as a termolecular process. The reaction rate coefficients k of the toluene-acetone and toluene-ethanol systems were calculated at different temperatures, and the Arrhenius plot showed that rate coefficients were both negatively correlated with temperature, implying that elevated temperatures suppress the proton transfer reaction. At 313.15 K, the calculated k values for the toluene-acetone and the toluene-ethanol systems were 2.2 × 10-26 cm6/s and 5.2 × 10-28 cm6/s, respectively, suggesting a higher inhibitory effect of acetone on toluene ionization than that of ethanol. Besides, the suppressive effect of reducing the pressure or increasing the reaction region electric field strength on proton transfer reactions was shown, which demonstrated the PI-tandem IMS was a good tool for understanding ion-molecule reactions in the ionization source.

Abstract
Patulin, a toxic mycotoxin, can contaminate apple-derived products. The FDA has established an action level of 50 ppb (ng/g) for patulin in apple juice and apple juice products. To effectively monitor this mycotoxin, there is a need for adequate analytical methods that can reliably and efficiently determine patulin levels. In this work, we developed an automated sample preparation workflow followed by liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-APCI-MS/MS) detection to identify and quantify patulin in a single method, further expanding testing capabilities for monitoring patulin in foods compared to traditional optical methods. Using a robotic sample preparation system, apple juice, apple cider, apple puree, apple-based baby food, applesauce, fruit rolls, and fruit jam were fortified with 13C-patulin and extracted using dichloromethane (DCM) without human intervention, followed by an LC-APCI-MS/MS analysis in negative ionization mode. The method achieved a limit of quantification of 4.0 ng/g and linearity ranging from 2 to 1000 ng/mL (r2 > 0.99). Quantitation was performed with isotope dilution using 13C-patulin as an internal standard and solvent calibration standards. Average recoveries (relative standard deviations, RSD%) in seven spike matrices were 95% (9%) at 10 ng/g, 110% (5%) at 50 ng/g, 101% (7%) at 200 ng/g, and 104% (4%) at 1000 ng/g (n = 28). The ranges of within-matrix and between-matrix variability (RSD) were 3-8% and 4-9%, respectively. In incurred samples, the identity of patulin was further confirmed with a comparison of the information-dependent acquisition-enhanced product ion (IDA-EPI) MS/MS spectra to a reference standard. The metrological traceability of the patulin measurements in an incurred apple cider (21.1 ± 8.0 µg/g) and apple juice concentrate (56.6 ± 15.6 µg/g) was established using a certified reference material and calibration data to demonstrate data confidence intervals (k = 2, 95% confidence interval).

Abstract
Patulin contamination in fruits, vegetables, and their products is considered a serious health risk factor for food safety and human health. Thus, a rapid, simple detection method for patulin is becoming important, which could provide a tool for routine screening and food surveys. The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive aptamer-based lateral flow assay (FLA) using Streptavidin functionalized gold nanoparticles for sensitive patulin detection. An excellent dynamic range for patulin detection was obtained (2.7~139.8 ng/mL in the buffer and 7.07~359.5 ng/mL in the sample) with no affinity for other mycotoxins such as zearalenone (ZEN), ochratoxin A (OTA), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), citrinin or tenuazonic acid (TEA). The limit of detection was 0.19 ng/mL in the buffer and 0.36 ng/mL in the real sample. The recoveries were 83.3% to 107.1%, with a satisfactory RSD value from 6.5% to 7.5%. Hence the established LFA could be used as a rapid, simple, on-site screening tool for PAT determination in apple juice.

Abstract
Patulin (PAT) is a potent mycotoxin commonly found in apples and apple-based products such as juice, thus affecting global food safety. Therefore, development of fast and simple analytical methods to effectively control its contamination is of great importance. This study developed and validated a technique for the analysis of PAT in samples of industrialized apple juice based on liquid-liquid extraction and using acetonitrile as the extraction solvent. Detection via mass spectrometry was performed after Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI). Mean recoveries of 97.5, 92.49 and 96.92% were reached for 4, 8 and 20 μg/L of PAT, respectively. The analyte was monitored with an APCI source in negative ion mode to identify its fragments. The 24 analyzed samples presented PAT levels below the limit of quantification. It may be concluded that the method fulfilled all of the validation criteria, thus being appropriate for routine surveillance of PAT in apple juice.

Abstract
Patulin and Trichothecene as the main groups of mycotoxins in significant quantities can cause health risks from allergic reactions to death on both humans and animals. Accordingly, rapid and highly sensitive determination of these toxics agents is of great importance. This review starts with a comprehensive outlook regarding the characteristics, occurrence and toxic effects of Patulin and Trichothecene. In the following, numerous clinical and analytical approaches have been extensively discussed. The main emphasis of this review is placed on the utilization of novel nanomaterial based electrochemical sensing/biosensing tools for highly sensitive determination of Patulin and Trichothecene. Furthermore, a detailed and comprehensive comparison has been performed between clinical, analytical and sensing methods. Subsequently, the nanomaterial based electrochemical sensing platforms have been approved as reliable tools for on-site analysis of Patulin and Trichothecene in food processing and manufacturing industries. Different nanomaterials in improving the performance of detecting assays were investigated and have various benefits toward clinical and analytical methods. This paper would address the limitations in the current developments as well as the future challenges involved in the successful construction of sensing approaches with the functionalized nanomaterials and also allow exploring into core-research works regarding this area.

Abstract
Natural products are sources of inspiration and reservoir of high valuable molecules. Recently, analytical tools based on liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry to generate molecular network became widely employed for dereplication. This strategy greatly accelerates the identification of known and structural hypothesis of unknown. Despite the availability of different ionization sources, alternatives to classical electrospray ionization (ESI), such as atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) or photoionization (APPI), have been neglected. In particular, APPI has been described for its ionization efficiency on non-polar molecules bearing no acid or basic groups. For that reason, we investigated APPI potential to generate molecular network and compare it to ESI on several criteria that are generation of ion species, sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for different extracts rich in highly conjugated natural products. We first optimized APPI experimental conditions on crude extract from a fungus, Penicillium sclerotiorum, producing polyketones belonging to the azaphilone family. Then we compared APPI and ESI on different fractions of the fungus and on two plant extracts, French Guyanese Swartzia panacoco (Aubl.) R.S. Cowan (arial parts) and Indian Cassia auriculata L. (leaves) containing phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids. While ESI generated more ion species and displayed a better sensitivity, APPI generated only protonated adduct and better SNR. Comparing ESI and APPI generated species on molecular network reveal that both strategies overlap for the majority of protonated ions.

Abstract
Recent developments in atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI), which is one of the three most important ionization techniques in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, are reviewed. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of APPI analysis, its combination with different separation techniques, novel instrumental developments - especially in gas chromatography and ambient mass spectrometry - and the applications that have appeared in 2009-2014. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
Patulin is a toxic metabolite of a number of fungi; its toxicity is serious and its contamination in food is a worldwide problem, especially in apple-based food. Effective control of patulin contamination strongly depends on reliable analytical methods. In this review, various analytical methods, especially those that have appeared in the last ten years, are summarized, including the highly reproducible chromatography and mass-spectrometry-based methods, highly selective sensor-based methods and indirect quantitative PCR methods. This review also summarizes the promising features of novel materials in sample preparation for patulin determination.

Abstract
This review highlights developments in the determination of mycotoxins over a period between mid-2013 and mid-2014. It continues in the format of the previous articles of this series, emphasising on analytical methods to determine aflatoxins, Alternaria toxins, ergot alkaloids, fumonisins, ochratoxins, patulin, trichothecenes and zearalenone. The importance of proper sampling and sample preparation is briefly addressed in a dedicated section, while another chapter summarises new methods used to analyse botanicals and spices. As LC-MS/MS instruments are becoming more and more widespread in the determination of multiple classes of mycotoxins, another section is focusing on such newly developed multi-mycotoxin methods. While the wealth of published methods during the 12 month time span makes it impossible to cover every single one, this exhaustive review nevertheless aims to address and briefly discuss the most important developments and trends.
