Abstract
We report field-dependent magnetization measurements on monolayers of [Dy(Pc)2] on quartz, prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The films are thoroughly characterized by means of X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. The magnetisation of the sample is measured through the magnetic circular dichroism of a ligand-based electronic transition.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and magnetic and photomagnetic behaviour of a novel valence tautomeric cobalt complex, [Co(3,5-dbbq)2(μ-bpym)] (1) (3,5-dbbq = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone and μ-bpym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine). The synthesis is performed by reacting Co2(CO)8 and μ-bpym in the presence of the ligand 3,5-dbbq in a mixed solvent under inert atmosphere. The magnetic behavior clearly shows the presence of electron transfer from the catecholate ligand to the cobalt center, producing valence tautomers of [CoII(SQ)2] with a transition temperature (T1/2) of 215 K. Photomagnetic studies, performed via both SQUID magnetometry and X-band electron paramagnetic resonance, show the clear presence of photoinduced valence tautomerism, at temperatures considerably higher than previous systems. A metastable charge distribution is observed, strengthening previous investigations on the character of mixed valence ligands. Entropy-driven valence tautomeric interconversion is observed, and drives the transition to the most stable charge distribution. The complex has the ability to coordinate and can be used as a photoswitchable building block, with the photomagnetic characterisation evidencing a metastable state lifetime of the photo-induced valence tautomeric process of ca. 2.9 × 104 s below 20 K. The observed yields are higher than ones in similar systems, showing that tiny changes in the molecular structures may have a huge impact.

Abstract
We present measurements of the magnetic properties of thin film TbPc(2) single-molecule magnets evaporated on a gold substrate and compare them to those in bulk. Zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements were used to determine the molecular spin fluctuation rate of TbPc(2) as a function of temperature. At low temperature, we find that the fluctuations in films are much faster than in bulk and depend strongly on the distance between the molecules and the Au substrate. We measure a molecular spin correlation time that varies between 1.4 μs near the substrate and 6.6 μs far away from it. We attribute this behavior to differences in the packing of the magnetic cores, which change gradually on the scale of ~10-20 nm away from the TbPc(2)/Au interface.

Abstract
Single molecule magnets based on the dodecamanganese (III, IV) cluster with two different types of ligand (acetate and benzoate) have been studied on the Au(111) surface. Due to the non-volatile and fragile nature of the molecules, we have used ultra-high vacuum electrospray deposition to produce a series of surface coverages from a fraction of a monolayer to multilayer films in both cases. Synchrotron radiation based electron spectroscopy has been used to study the adsorption of the molecules on the Au(111) surface and the effect that this has on the oxidation states of the manganese atoms in the core. In both cases, reduction of the core is observed due to the interaction with the surface, to essentially the same extent despite substantial differences in the size and nature of the ligand shell.

Abstract
A tetrairon(III) single-molecule magnet is deposited using a thermal evaporation technique in high vacuum. The chemical integrity is demonstrated by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry on a film deposited on Al foil, while superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and alternating current susceptometry of a film deposited on a kapton substrate show magnetic properties identical to the pristine powder. High-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance spectra confirm the characteristic behavior for a system with S = 5 and a large Ising-type magnetic anisotropy. All these results indicate that the molecules are not damaged during the deposition procedure keeping intact the single-molecule magnet behavior.

Abstract
This review describes advances made in three areas of molecular magnetic materials of the types A: extended frameworks (coordination polymers) showing long-range magnetic order, B: spin-coupled clusters with emphasis on single molecule magnets and (n × n) grid species, C: polynuclear spin-switching (spin crossover) compounds of FeII with emphasis on dinuclear compounds and one-dimensional (1D) and three-dimensional (3D) (framework) materials, including porous ‘hybrid’ systems. The work of the author and his group is largely used to provide examples, together with results from other groups and collaborators that are included for comparison and completeness. Supramolecular aspects such as cluster–cluster and chain–chain interactions are discussed where relevant. A brief discussion is also given of the recent studies, carried out elsewhere, dealing with aspects of spintronics and the possible future relevance to molecular computers (type B materials) and with memory and other device possibilities (type C materials)
