Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this investigation was to conduct a thorough synthesis of the extant scholarly discourse and to delineate the prevailing global trends in the domain of burn pain, employing a bibliometric analysis. METHODS A bibliometric analysis was performed utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection database. Articles were selected based on titles or abstracts containing keywords associated with burns and pain. Both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were applied to examine the retrieved data, encompassing an analysis of publication trends, research themes, and collaboration networks. RESULTS The number of articles on this topic has been increasing, averaging an annual growth rate of 6.9 % from 1997 to 2023. Contributions have come from 645 institutions across 53 countries, resulting in 446 papers that span areas such as nursing, anesthesia, and immunology. Key journals include Burns, Journal of Burn Care & Research, and Pain. The United States has demonstrated a significant research output in this field, with active international collaboration, notably with Washington University leading in contributions. Patterson DR was the most prolific author in terms of published papers, while Choiniere M was the most frequently co-cited author. The focus of research has shifted from symptom management to exploring pain mechanisms. Current research priorities in burn pain include "quality of life," "music therapy," and "psychological state." Recent analysis has highlighted key areas in neuropathic pain mechanisms, novel analgesic therapies, and specific groups such as pediatric burn patients. Influential studies have advanced our understanding of pathophysiology, while psychological interventions and inflammation are increasingly receiving attention. Emerging topics include non-pharmacological interventions, psychological support, technology in pain assessment and management, quality of life, and personalized pain management. CONCLUSION Research on burn pain is advancing rapidly; however, collaboration among countries and institutions remains limited. Increased cooperation and communication across these entities could significantly advance the field in the future. Future research should prioritize placebo-controlled trials of targeted therapeutic drugs and innovative pain management approaches, with a strong emphasis on patient outcomes and quality of life.

Abstract
Controlling acute pain for individuals undergoing orthopedic surgery is highly desirable as it is related to various treatment outcomes. Immersive, virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) is one potential treatment modality to aid in pain management. This three-arm, randomized clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of two hypnosis interventions for reducing post-surgical pain and anxiety in addition to evaluating the effects on sleep quality, mental health, and physical functioning. Results indicated no statistically significant main effects associated with intervention groups for pre-post change scores of pain intensity (F(3, 177) = 0.35, p = .71, partial η2 = .004), anxiety (F(3, 177) = 0.20, p = .81, partial η2 = .002) or sleep quality (F(3, 175) = 0.81, p = .45, partial η2 = .009). Additionally, there were no statistically significant group effects of treatment condition on mental health (F(2, 162) = .71, p = .49, η2 = .009) or physical functioning (F(2, 165) = .43, p = .65, η2 = .005). Issues and future directions for this line of research are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Surgical procedures, even under local anesthesia, can induce significant stress and anxiety in patients. Innovative approaches to alleviate anxiety are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Sedatives and anxiolytics may alleviate this discomfort, but they can also subject patients to undesirable side effects, diminishing their overall effectiveness, and, finally, delaying discharge. We present the first case series of a patients underwent inguinal hernia surgical repair under local anesthesia using VRH (HypnoVR) to avoid use of sedatives and anxiolytics. METHODS 12 consecutive patients were enrolled to undergo elective monolateral inguinal hernia repair surgery via an open approach using HypnoVR, at Colorectal Surgery Unit of Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. Vital signs (heart rate, SpO2, blood pressure) were detected for all patients before surgery, during local anesthesia, during the whole intervention and after surgery. RESULTS No intraoperative or postoperative complications have been recorded and only one postoperative complication occurred (seroma), which not required invasive treatment but only drug administration. All patient's vital parameters were recorded during all operative and perioperative phasis. No use of intraoperative analgesic, sedative or anxiolytic were needed. All patients were discharged no later than 3 h after surgery. CONCLUSION Virtual Reality Hypnosis is a promising tool for anxiety management in surgical settings. Our series highlights the positive impact of HypnoVR in reduction and management of surgical patient anxiety and discomfort, allowing to perform inguinal hernia repair using only local anesthesia, with good patients' satisfaction.

Abstract
When used separately, virtual reality (VR) and mind-body therapies (MBTs) have the potential to reduce pain across various acute and chronic conditions. While their combination is increasingly used, no study offers a consolidated presentation of VR and MBTs. This study aims to propose an overview of the effectiveness of VR combined with MBTs (i.e., meditation, mindfulness, relaxation, and hypnosis) to decrease the pain experienced by healthy volunteers or patients. We conducted a scoping review of the literature using PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar and included 43 studies. Findings across studies support that VR combined with MBTs is a feasible, well-tolerated, and potentially useful to reduce pain. Their combination also had a positive effect on anxiety, mood, and relaxation. However, insufficient research on this VR/MBTs combination and the lack of multidimensional studies impede a comprehensive understanding of their full potential. More randomized controlled studies are thus needed, with usability evaluation protocols to better understand the effects of VR/MBTs on patients wellbeing and to incorporate them into routine clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effective pain control is crucial to optimise the success of medical procedures. Immersive virtual reality (VR) technology could offer an effective non-invasive, non-pharmacological option to distract patients and reduce their experience of pain. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Immersive virtual reality (VR) technology in reducing patient's pain perception during various medical procedures by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, and SIGLE until December 2022 for all randomised clinical trials (RCT) evaluating any type of VR in patients undergoing any medical procedure. We conducted a random effect meta-analysis summarising standardised mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). We evaluated heterogeneity using I 2 and explored it using subgroup and meta-regression analyses. RESULTS In total, we included 92 RCTs (n = 7133 participants). There was a significant reduction in pain scores with VR across all medical procedures (n = 83, SMD - 0.78, 95% CI - 1.00 to - 0.57, I 2 = 93%, p = < 0.01). Subgroup analysis showed varied reduction in pain scores across trial designs [crossover (n = 13, SMD - 0.86, 95% CI - 1.23 to - 0.49, I 2 = 72%, p = < 0.01) vs parallel RCTs (n = 70, SMD - 0.77, 95% CI - 1.01 to - 0.52, I 2 = 90%, p = < 0.01)]; participant age groups [paediatric (n = 43, SMD - 0.91, 95% CI - 1.26 to - 0.56, I 2 = 87%, p = < 0.01) vs adults (n = 40, SMD - 0.66, 95% CI - 0.94 to - 0.39, I 2 = 89%, p = < 0.01)] or procedures [venepuncture (n = 32, SMD - 0.99, 95% CI - 1.52 to - 0.46, I 2 = 90%, p = < 0.01) vs childbirth (n = 7, SMD - 0.99, 95% CI - 1.59 to - 0.38, I 2 = 88%, p = < 0.01) vs minimally invasive medical procedures (n = 25, SMD - 0.51, 95% CI - 0.79 to - 0.23, I 2 = 85%, p = < 0.01) vs dressing changes in burn patients (n = 19, SMD - 0.8, 95% CI - 1.16 to - 0.45, I 2 = 87%, p = < 0.01)]. We explored heterogeneity using meta-regression which showed no significant impact of different covariates including crossover trials (p = 0.53), minimally invasive procedures (p = 0.37), and among paediatric participants (p = 0.27). Cumulative meta-analysis showed no change in overall effect estimates with the additional RCTs since 2018. CONCLUSIONS Immersive VR technology offers effective pain control across various medical procedures, albeit statistical heterogeneity. Further research is needed to inform the safe adoption of this technology across different medical disciplines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Botulinum toxin injections are commonly used for the treatment of spasticity. However, injection procedures are associated with pain and procedural anxiety. While pharmacological approaches are commonly used to reduce these, innovative technology might be considered as a potential non-pharmacological alternative. Given this context, immersive virtual reality (VR) has shown effectiveness in the management of procedural pain. Our retrospective pilot study aimed to assess the potential added value of virtual reality in the management of pain and anxiety during intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventeen adult patients receiving botulinum toxin injections were included. A numerical rating scale was used to assess pain and anxiety during the injection procedure. The patients reported the pain experienced during previous injections without VR before injection and the pain experienced in the current procedure with VR after the end of the procedure. The level of satisfaction of VR experience, whether or not they agreed to reuse VR for the subsequent toxin botulinum injection, and whether or not they would recommend VR to other patients were assessed. RESULTS The use of virtual reality led to a decrease of 1.8 pain-related points compared to the procedure without technology. No significant improvement in the level of anxiety was reported. Patients were very satisfied with their VR experiences (7.9 out of 10), and many would agree to reuse VR in their next injection procedure (88%) and to recommend the use of VR in other patients (100%). CONCLUSION VR was useful for managing procedural pain related to botulinum toxin injection in adults, with a high level of satisfaction reported by the patients. VR should be considered as a valuable alternative to pharmacological approaches to manage procedural pain during botulinum toxin injection in adults.

Abstract
Immersive virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool to reduce pain in clinical setting. Digital scripts displayed by VR disposals can be enriched by several analgesic interventions, which are widely used to reduce pain. One of these techniques is hypnosis induced through the VR script (VRH) which is facilitated by immersive environment and particularly efficient even for low hypnotizable patients. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of a VRH script on experimentally induced cold pain perception (intensity and unpleasantness) and physiological expression. 41 healthy volunteers had been recruited in this within-subjects study. They received 9 stimulations of 20 s (3 non-nociceptive cold; 3 low nociceptive cold and 3 highly nociceptive cold) during a VRH session of 20 min (VRH condition) or without VRH (noVRH condition). Physiological monitoring during the cold pain stimulation protocol consisted of recording heart rate, heart rate variability and respiratory frequency. Maximum cold pain intensity perception, measured through the visual analog scale (VAS) on 10, was of 3.66 ± 1.84 (VAS score/10) in noVRH condition and 2.46 ± 1.54 in VRH (Wilcoxon, p < 0.0001). Considering pain unpleasantness perception, 3.68 ± 2.06 in noVRH and 2.21 ± 1.63 in VRH (Wilcoxon, p < 0.0001). Hypnotizability negatively correlated with the decrease in VAS intensity from noVRH to VRH (Spearman r = -0.45; p = 0.0038). In our sample, we found that 31/41 volunteers (75.6%) displayed a reduction of more than 10% of their VAS pain intensity and unpleasantness scores. Trait anxiety was the best predictor of the VRH responders, as well as heart rate variability. In addition, respiratory rate was diminished under VRH in every subgroup. VRH is an effective tool to reduced pain intensity and unpleasantness in a vast majority of healthy subjects. We further indicate in this study that heart rate variability parameter RMSSD (root mean square of successive differences) is a good predictor of this effect, as well as anxiety as a personality trait (but not state anxiety). Further studies are expected to determine more precisely to whom it will be the most useful to offer tailored, non-pharmacological pain management solutions to patients.

Abstract
Needle-related procedures can cause pain and fear in children and may lead to avoidance of future medical care. The aim of this study is to investigate whether virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) is non-inferior to medical hypnosis (MH) by a trained healthcare provider in reducing pain in children. This non-inferiority randomized trial was conducted at a teaching hospital in the Netherlands. Children aged 6 to 18 years were randomized to treatment with VRH or MH. The primary outcome was self-reported pain, using the Wong-Baker FACES Scale (WBFS) with the non-inferiority margin defined as a difference of 1.5 points. Secondary outcomes included observer-reported pain (Numeric Rating Scale), fear (scored by children and observers with the Children's Fear Scale), blood pressure, heart rate, treatment satisfaction, and adverse effects. We randomized 138 children to VRH or MH treatment and included 114 children in the analyses (VRH n = 60, MH n = 54). We found non-inferiority for VRH compared to MH on patient-reported pain (mean difference = - 0.17, 95%CI - 1.01;0.66). Secondary outcomes were comparable between VRH and MH groups. Both treatments scored high on patient satisfaction (VRH median = 9.0, MH median = 10.0, p = 0.512). CONCLUSION VRH may be an effective and safe treatment option besides MH for reducing patient-reported pain in children during a needle-related procedure. VRH was non-inferior to MH in patient-reported fear and both treatments were comparable in terms of patient-reported fear, observer-reported pain and fear, physical distress, and patient satisfaction. Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) has emerged as a new and promising option for pain management. Nonetheless, neural dynamics of pain modulation during VRH have not been investigated yet. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of VRH on pain, combining neurophysiological and self-reported measurements. METHODS Eighteen healthy subjects underwent noxious electrical stimulations in both normal wakefulness and VRH conditions. Dissociation, absorption, time perception, anxiety, pain intensity and unpleasantness, heart rate variability and breathing were reported for each condition. EEG signals were analysed using event-related potentials (ERP) and time-frequency response (TFR) time-locked to stimuli. Neurophysiological features were correlated with self-reported data. RESULTS VRH condition was associated with lower pain and higher dissociation. VRH significantly decreased amplitudes of N100 and P200 ERP components, reduced EEG power between 1 and 5 Hz from 100 to 560 ms, and increased EEG power from 5 to 11 Hz from 340 to 800 ms. These findings were observed at frontal, central and posterior electrodes. Heart rate variability was significantly higher and breathing frequency reduced with VRH. Correlations were found between the self-reported level of pain and ERP components. CONCLUSION VRH modulates cerebral pain processes and body physiology, leading to reduced pain levels. These findings offer a first insight on the analgesic mechanisms of VRH and suggest that VRH is an effective approach to reduce experimental pain. SIGNIFICANCE VRH decreases experimental pain perception, increases subject level of dissociation and modulates cerebral pain processing mechanisms. Pain can be managed with analgesic medication but also through complementary interventions. Among these, hypnosis and virtual reality (VR) are known to reduce pain for patients and healthy individuals. In recent years, an innovative technique combining hypnosis and VR has been proposed to help patients in managing pain. However, to our knowledge, no study has focused on the underlying mechanisms of this VR/hypnosis combination. We showed that VR combined with hypnosis decreases experimental pain, increases dissociation and influences EEG modulation.

Abstract
Background The application of virtual reality (VR) in clinical settings is growing rapidly, with encouraging results. As VR has been introduced into complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), a systematic review must be undertaken to understand its current status. Aim This review aims to evaluate and summarize the current applications of VR in CAM, as well as to explore potential directions for future research and development. Methods After a brief description of VR technology, we discuss the past 20 years of clinical VR applications in the medical field. Then, we discuss the theoretical basis of the combination of VR technology and CAM, the research thus far, and practical factors regarding usability, etc., from the following three main aspects: clinical application, teaching, and scientific research. Finally, we summarize and propose hypotheses on the application of VR in CAM and its limitations. Results Our review of the theoretical underpinnings and research findings to date leads to the prediction that VR and CAM will have a significant impact on future research and practice. Conclusion Although there is still much research needed to advance the science in this area, we strongly believe that VR applications will become indispensable tools in the toolbox of CAM researchers and practitioners and will only grow in relevance and popularity in the era of digital health.

Abstract
The unique challenges burn patients face along the trajectory of recovery necessitate an interdisciplinary team approach to care. As much as providers rely on care-team members for delivery of optimal treatment, the patient must be an active collaborator in their care. Optimal burn recovery outcomes hinge on treatment adherence. In addition to general challenges faced in ubiquity by burn patients, there are specific patient populations for whom treatment adherence is particularly challenging. Although psychological interventions have been used successfully with burn patients, very few are appropriate for both inpatient and outpatient care environments and most do not focus on treatment adherence. This paper reviews unique facets of Motivational Interviewing (MI) that may be applicable in interdisciplinary burn treatment teams across inpatient and outpatient settings to optimize treatment adherence.

Abstract
This issue of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (IJCEH) further expands our understanding of hypnosis and use in health care. Results from a randomized clinical trial on the efficacy of a hypnosis intervention to reduce pain and improve quality of life in patients undergoing mastectomy for breast cancer provides encouraging support for the integration of hypnosis in health care. Additionally, research on the feasibility of a brief hypnosis intervention delivered via audio recording for stress reduction and effect on hypertension is presented. However, more needs to be done to educate health care providers, including nurses, on the benefits of clinical hypnosis in patient care. Hypnotizability and scales that may be associated with response to hypnosis interventions are also an important area of research. Additional articles examine the Thought Impact Scale; dispositional self-consciousness; and hypnotizability. Taken together these articles provide important findings on clinical hypnosis research.
