Abstract
OBJECTIVE Few studies of prescription stimulant non-oral, non-medical use (NMU) (defined by use not as prescribed) have been conducted in adults beyond the college population. The purpose of this study was to characterize prescription stimulant non-oral use, specifically intranasal (IN) use (snorting) in young adults. METHOD Amazon's MTurk platform was used to recruit participants for an online survey. Data were collected from March to April 2020. RESULTS Thirty-two percent (n = 157) of survey respondents (N = 975), aged 18 to 30, reported IN prescription stimulant use (average of 32.1 episodes of lifetime IN use). Adderall was the most-reported prescription stimulant used intranasally (89.2%). Most IN users (82%; n = 68) reported spending no more than 5 minutes tampering with prescription stimulants. Intranasal users said they would take the medication orally if unable to tamper or manipulate medication for IN use. CONCLUSION These data help quantify a complex public health issue of ongoing IN use of prescription stimulants and suggest a potential role for manipulation-deterrent medications.

Abstract
Objective: Pilot study to assess the efficacy of a multidisciplinary educational training program (OverdosED) designed to increase college students' knowledge of and confidence in their ability to appropriately recognize and respond to suspected overdose on depressant substances. Participants: Undergraduate students (n = 92) with Greek life affiliations at a moderately-sized private liberal arts college in the southeastern USA. Methods: Electronic surveys were administered before and after delivery of the training program. Questions assessing knowledge of depressant substance overdose were compared to determine the impact of the educational intervention. Questions assessing participants' confidence in their ability to recognize and respond to overdose and their perceptions of campus culture were also compared. Results: Mean composite scores on knowledge-based questions were significantly higher for the post-intervention survey compared to the pre-intervention survey. Confidence in knowledge also significantly increased after the intervention. Mean scores for survey responses related to campus culture were high at baseline but significantly increased after the intervention. Conclusions: OverdosED successfully increased college students' knowledge of and confidence in their ability to appropriately recognize and respond to suspected overdose on depressant substances, and positively influenced perceptions on campus culture.

Abstract
Introduction: Two prominent motivation categories of college student nonmedical prescription stimulant use (NMUPS) are for academic and recreational purposes. However, little research focuses on these motivations' association with college students' NMUPS views. Further, limited research assesses if user gender influences views. Methods: The current online scenario study implemented a 2 × 2 factorial design assessing 148 college undergraduates' (75% females; Mage = 19.18; SDage = 1.30) NMUPS views based on user motivation and gender. Participants reported their drug use stigmatization, prescription stimulant expectancies (ie, anticipated drug use beliefs and outcomes), and personal substance use. Results and Discussion: Results showed that user gender did not influence participants' NMUPS views; however, participants viewed academic use less negatively compared to recreational use, thus highlighting the need to educate students on the negative consequences of NMUPS, even when use is for academically related tasks. Furthermore, exploratory analyses showed drug use stigmatization and prescription stimulant expectancies predicted participant NMUPS views.Supplemental data for this article can be accessed online at https://doi.org/10.1080/07448481.2021.1942005.

Abstract
Objective: The prevalence of stimulant medication misuse is rising in college students. Motivations to use stimulant medications differ from motivation to use other substances such as alcohol or cannabis. However, no previous research has examined the impact of achievement goal orientation on stimulant misuse in college students. Participants: 309 college students (mean age = 18.9; 117 males) without an ADHD diagnosis were invited to participate. Methods: Participants completed an online research questionnaire that assessed factors associated with stimulant medication misuse as well as achievement goal orientations (Learning and Performance Orientations). Results: Approximately 12% endorsed a history of stimulant misuse within the past year. More males (17.1%) than females (9.4%) reported stimulant misuse. Those with and without a history of stimulant misuse differed on Performance Orientation (misuse > no misuse) yet were comparable on Learning Orientation. Conclusions: Having a higher Performance Orientation independently predicted stimulant misuse.

Abstract
The misuse of prescription stimulants (e.g., Ritalin, Adderall) is a large and growing problem on college campuses. Emerging research examines not only the demographic predictors of stimulant misuse but also the potentially role that stimulant misuse plays in a college student's overall functioning and mental health. To better understand the experiences specifically linked with stimulant misuse rather than substance use more broadly, we tested whether psychosocial functioning differed across four groups of college students: those who do not misuse stimulants or other hard drugs; those who misuse both stimulants and other hard drugs; those who misuse stimulants but not other hard drugs; and those who misuse other hard drugs but not stimulants (N = 1534; 40.3% male; 33.9% ethnic minority). Those who misused stimulants reported higher levels of impulsivity, as well as substance use consequences, than those who did not use any hard drugs. However, these differences were exacerbated among those who misused stimulants and other hard drugs. Taken together, these findings suggest that stimulant misuse typically occurs in a broader pattern of substance use, and that stimulant misusers generally fall along a continuum of substance use severity in terms of psychosocial functioning.

Abstract
Background: Research has shown that prescription stimulant misuse (PSM) is prevalent among college students and that full-time college attendance is associated with PSM following graduation. Few studies, however, have examined predictors of PSM in college graduates. Objectives: We examined constructs from the Theory of Triadic Influence (TTI) to determine predictors of PSM in this population. Methods: We utilized Amazon's Mechanical Turk and snowball sampling in 2018-2019 to anonymously survey 219 adults in the United States (56% male, Mage = 32.5) with a college degree and history of college PSM. We assessed sensation seeking, ADHD symptoms, negative affect, social norms, workload, positive beliefs and perceived safety, other substance use, PSM motivations, and source(s) of prescription stimulants. Measures were administered online. Results: Over half (55%) of participants reported PSM after college; 36% used in the previous year. Ordinal logistic regressions for each domain of the TTI (i.e. intrapersonal, social/normative, cultural/attitudinal) showed that college graduates engaging in PSM in the previous year were younger and reported higher sensation seeking, more friends/coworkers who engaged in PSM, a heavier workload, and more positive beliefs about PSM. Chi-square analyses showed that college graduates engaging in PSM in the previous year also were more likely to use other substances (e.g. prescription opioids, tobacco/nicotine, cocaine) and to have misused stimulants in college to socialize or to get high. Conclusions: Preventive interventions could target college students and recent graduates who engage in PSM and who demonstrate the aforementioned risk factors, with the goal of curbing PSM and possibly other substance use.

Abstract
Background Understanding motivations behind non-medical use of prescription stimulants (NMUPS) is important to prevent such use. Methods Adult participants from St. Louis, MO, who endorsed NMUPS on 5 or more days in the past 12 months (n=60) were asked about their motivations for use. Associations between motives for use and patterns of non-medical use in the past 12 months were assessed using multivariable logistic regression, controlling for demographic factors and non-medical use of other prescription drugs. Results On average, 5.5 different motives for stimulant use were endorsed. Compared to those who only used someone else's stimulants, adults who only used stimulants other than prescribed were less likely to endorse use "to get high" (aOR=0.48, 95%CI 0.26-0.90) and more likely to endorse use "to function" (aOR=1.97, 95%CI 1.04-3.75); adults who were engaged in both patterns of NMUPS were more likely to endorse use "to function" (aOR=4.12, 95%CI 1.56-10.88) and "to modify the effects of other drugs" (aOR=2.29, 95%CI 1.13-4.61). Conclusion Although using stimulants for performance enhancement is common, most people who used diverted stimulants reported using stimulants to get high. Prevention and harm reduction strategies should consider these differences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prescription use of the stimulants methylphenidate and amphetamine for the treatment of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been increasing. In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration mandated changes to drug labels for stimulants on the basis of findings of new-onset psychosis. Whether the risk of psychosis in adolescents and young adults with ADHD differs among various stimulants has not been extensively studied. METHODS We used data from two commercial insurance claims databases to assess patients 13 to 25 years of age who had received a diagnosis of ADHD and who started taking methylphenidate or amphetamine between January 1, 2004, and September 30, 2015. The outcome was a new diagnosis of psychosis for which an antipsychotic medication was prescribed during the first 60 days after the date of the onset of psychosis. To estimate hazard ratios for psychosis, we used propensity scores to match patients who received methylphenidate with patients who received amphetamine in each database, compared the incidence of psychosis between the two stimulant groups, and then pooled the results across the two databases. RESULTS We assessed 337,919 adolescents and young adults who received a prescription for a stimulant for ADHD. The study population consisted of 221,846 patients with 143,286 person-years of follow up; 110,923 patients taking methylphenidate were matched with 110,923 patients taking amphetamines. There were 343 episodes of psychosis (with an episode defined as a new diagnosis code for psychosis and a prescription for an antipsychotic medication) in the matched populations (2.4 per 1000 person-years): 106 episodes (0.10%) in the methylphenidate group and 237 episodes (0.21%) in the amphetamine group (hazard ratio with amphetamine use, 1.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.31 to 2.09). CONCLUSIONS Among adolescents and young adults with ADHD who were receiving prescription stimulants, new-onset psychosis occurred in approximately 1 in 660 patients. Amphetamine use was associated with a greater risk of psychosis than methylphenidate. (Funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and others.).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The nonmedical use of prescription stimulants (NMUPS) is one of the most prevalent illicit behaviors on college campuses. While numerous risk factors for NMUPS have been identified, it is unknown how nonusing students who meet several risk factors for NMUPS differ from those who have used, which may inform intervention efforts. We expected that users would evidence greater cognitive enhancement and anxiety/arousal expectancies and intentions to use, and lower guilt/dependence expectancies, perceptions of NMUPS-related harm, and academic self-efficacy. METHODS Between 2014 and 2016, students (N = 121; 65% female) at two demographically dissimilar colleges in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States who reported lifetime NMUPS or endorsed two or more NMUPS risk factors (i.e., recent marijuana use, recent binge drinking, grade point average <3.5, Greek-life involvement, male gender) reported on their prescription stimulant expectancies; academic self-efficacy; perceived harm of NMUPS; lifetime NMUPS; and intentions for NMUPS in the next six months. RESULTS A MANCOVA showed that at-risk nonusers had lower cognitive expectancies, higher guilt/dependence expectancies, and higher anxiety/arousal expectancies compared to users. ANCOVAs and Chi-square tests showed that nonusers also perceived NMUPS to be more harmful and were less likely to divert their medication if prescribed. The groups did not differ on academic self-efficacy or total number of risk factors endorsed. However, recent marijuana use was more prevalent in users. CONCLUSIONS Targeted preventive interventions for NMUPS should focus on students who are using marijuana and should aim to maintain lower positive and higher negative stimulant expectancies and reaffirm potential NMUPS-related harms.

Abstract
Data show that the prevalence of non-medical use of prescription stimulants is higher among college students than their same-age peers who do not attend college. Because of this, most of the research in this area focuses on data from samples of college students and on use motivated by academic demands. There is little research that examines whether attending college increases the odds of non-medical use of prescription stimulants while including important covariates in the analytical models. The current research addresses this gap in the literature using data from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health for respondents aged 18 to 25 years old. We estimate a multivariate logistic regression model to determine whether college attendance increased the odds of non-medical use of prescription stimulants. The analysis showed that young adults who enrolled in college full-time were more likely to report non-medical use of prescription stimulants than their same-age peers who did not attend college. There was no significant difference between part-time college students and non-college students. Future research should focus on how specific aspects of the college environment, other than academic stress, may increase the risk of non-medical use of prescription stimulants.

The present study measured the effect a placebo stimulant and personal expectancies have on subjective physiological changes and cognitive enhancement. Undergraduate college students participated in a two-phase study. Phase 1 (n = 305) involved completing an online survey to gather distal study variables and individual stimulant expectancy data. Phase 2 (n = 166) required students to attend an in-person session where they completed physiological and neuropsychological measures (e.g., Physical Symptom Checklist, Digit Span, Passage Comprehension). Students were randomized to receive a placebo stimulant medication (experimental) or no medication (control). Following a 30-minute absorption period, participants completed another set of physiological and neuropsychological measures. Experimental participants reported significant increases in positive symptoms resulting from the placebo stimulant. Expectancies moderated the impact of the placebo stimulant on Passage Comprehension performance; no other neuropsychological task performance was impacted. Despite subjective reports of feeling the effects of stimulants, task performance was unaffected. Moreover, expectancies may play a small role in perceptions of the effects of stimulants.

Abstract
The nonmedical use of prescription stimulants (NMUPS) is a prevalent issue among college students. The primary reason college students report NMUPS is for academic enhancement i.e., to perform better on schoolwork/tests and focus better in class. Executive functioning (EF), which includes abilities that allow for planning, cognitive flexibility, self-regulation, and goal-directed behavior, are potential mechanisms underlying academic performance. Preliminary research has revealed that college students with EF deficits are more likely to have educational difficulties and take part in risky behavior. Based on the literature, it is possible that students with EF deficits are engaging in NMUPS to help them overcome these deficits to succeed academically. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between NMUPS and EF among a sample of college students. The sample included 308 students from six public universities located in various regions of the United States. Measures used in this study were the SSQ, BDEFS and GPA. Results revealed 18.8% of the general sample reported NMUPS. Participants with clinically significant EF deficits reported significantly higher rates of NMUPS, compared to those without deficits in EF. NMUPS, however, did not moderate the relationship between EF and GPA. The present findings have implications for identifying sub-populations of college students who might be at risk for engaging in NMUPS and to improve prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing NMUPS. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite decreases in the use of illicit drugs in the United States, prescription medications have become a major category of substances used by young adults. OBJECTIVE This study examines the relationship between the socioeconomic status (SES) of young adult respondents (ages 24-32) and their history of nonmedical use of prescription medications (NUPM). METHOD A secondary analysis was conducted with nationally representative data gathered from several waves (n = 15 701) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Four categories of NUPM were examined: (i) sedatives; (ii) tranquilizers; (iii) stimulants; and (iv) pain killers. SES was defined by several measures in the Add Health survey. Given the complex sampling plan of the Add Health, all analyses were weighted appropriately. RESULTS Results indicated higher levels of personal SES, such as having health insurance or not experiencing a financial hardship in the past year, decreased the likelihood of reporting lifetime NUPM. In contrast higher levels of parent SES (e.g. parental education) were associated with an increased likelihood of reporting lifetime use of NUPM tranquilizers and stimulants. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest parental SES may have a stronger influence over NUPM than personal levels of SES, particularly for the categories of tranquilizers and stimulants. Furthermore, these findings indicate more research is needed on this subject to better understand the NUPM epidemic in order to effectively develop comprehensive clinical, public health, and policy-related intervention and prevention approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Young adults (18-25) are most at-risk for the non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD). Understanding this population's motivations for use can help inform efforts to reduce NMUPD. Therefore, this systematic review synthesizes the findings from research on young adults' motivations to engage in NMUPD. METHODS Based on PRISMA guidelines, relevant databases were systematically searched for articles that assessed the motivations for NMUPD in young adults and college-aged students. Search strings included a range of prescription drug classes and terms to ensure an exhaustive review. RESULTS The search resulted in identifying 353 potential articles after duplicates were removed, and 37 articles were included in the final qualitative synthesis. Of the final articles, the majority investigated the non-medical use of prescription stimulants in U.S. student populations cross-sectionally. Seven studies, either exclusively or in combination with other medications, researched prescription opioids, and five investigated central nervous system depressants. Only one study investigated motivations over time. CONCLUSION There are many ways in which the current literature can be expanded, including researching other populations and focusing on prescriptions other than stimulants. Using the medications for their prescribed properties and known side effects emerged as a consistent theme. It was also fairly common for young adults to report recreational motives. Issues with measurement and definitions of key terms (e.g., non-medical) would benefit from consistency in future work. Research on motivations should continue and be incorporated into the larger drug use context, as well as existing prevention and intervention strategies.

Abstract
Nonmedical use of cough syrup (NUCS) among secondary vocational school (SVS) students has been an increasing concern for public health in China, but no data were available. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characters of NUCS as well as its risk factors among SVS students in China.From September 2013 to December 2014, a total of 13,614 SVS students were purposively selected through multistage sampling in 6 cities of China. Information on NUCS, demographics, family background, smoking and alcohol consumption, impulsiveness, sensation seeking, and parental monitoring were collected. Logistic regression was used to explore factors related to NUCS.The 12,923 (94.9%) valid responses (16.3 ± 1.0 years old, and 52.6% men) reported 3.47% (95% confidence interval: 3.15-3.79%) lifetime NUCS. Logistic regression indicated that smoking, part-time job experience, high level of impulsiveness, and sensation seeking were risk factors for NUCS, whereas urban living and high parental monitoring were protective ones.NUCS was prevalent among SVS students. Interventions that target on smoking, impulsiveness and sensation seeking control, improvement on parental monitoring may have considerable impact on NUCS among SVS students.

Abstract
The illicit use of prescription stimulants (IUPS) is a substance use behavior that remains prevalent on college campuses. As theory can guide research and practice, we provide a systematic review of the college-based IUPS epidemiological literature guided by one ecological framework, the theory of triadic influence (TTI). We aim to assess prevalence, elucidate the behavior's multietiological nature, and discuss prevention implications. Peer-reviewed studies were located through key phrase searches (prescription stimulant misuse and college, "prescription stimulant misuse" and "college," illicit use of prescription stimulants in college, and nonmedical prescription stimulant use in college students) in electronic databases (PubMed, PubMed Central, and EBSCO Host) for the period 2000 to 2013. Studies meeting inclusion criteria had their references reviewed for additional eligible literature. Statistically significant correlates of IUPS in the 62 retrieved studies were organized using the three streams of influence and four levels of causation specified in the TTI. Results show that the prevalence of IUPS varies across campuses. Additionally, findings suggest the behavior is multifaceted, as correlates were observed within each stream of influence and level of causation specified by the TTI. We conclude that IUPS is prevalent in, but varies across, colleges and is influenced by intrapersonal and broader social and societal factors. We discuss implications for prevention and directions for future research.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that cause functional impairment. Recent research indicates that symptoms persist into adulthood in the majority of cases, with prevalence estimates of approximately 5% in the school age population and 2.5%–4% in the adult population. Although students with ADHD are at greater risk for academic underachievement and psychosocial problems, increasing numbers of students with ADHD are graduating from high school and pursuing higher education. Stimulant medications are considered the first line of pharmacotherapy for individuals with ADHD, including college students. Although preliminary evidence indicates that prescription stimulants are safe and effective for college students with ADHD when used as prescribed, very few controlled studies have been conducted concerning the efficacy of prescription stimulants with college students. In addition, misuse of prescription stimulants has become a serious problem on college campuses across the US and has been recently documented in other countries as well. The purpose of the present systematic review was to investigate the efficacy of prescription stimulants for adolescents and young adults with ADHD and the nonmedical use and misuse of prescription stimulants. Results revealed that both prostimulant and stimulant medications, including lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, methylphenidate, amphetamines, and mixed-amphetamine salts, are effective at reducing ADHD symptoms in adolescents and adults with ADHD. Findings also suggest that individuals with ADHD may have higher rates of stimulant misuse than individuals without the disorder, and characteristics such as sex, race, use of illicit drugs, and academic performance are associated with misuse of stimulant medications. Results also indicate that individuals both with and without ADHD are more likely to misuse short-acting agents than long-acting agents. These findings have implications for intervention, prevention, and future research.

Abstract
Chronic sleep loss and associated sleepiness and daytime impairments in adolescence are a serious threat to the academic success, health, and safety of our nation's youth and an important public health issue. Understanding the extent and potential short- and long-term repercussions of sleep restriction, as well as the unhealthy sleep practices and environmental factors that contribute to sleep loss in adolescents, is key in setting public policies to mitigate these effects and in counseling patients and families in the clinical setting. This report reviews the current literature on sleep patterns in adolescents, factors contributing to chronic sleep loss (ie, electronic media use, caffeine consumption), and health-related consequences, such as depression, increased obesity risk, and higher rates of drowsy driving accidents. The report also discusses the potential role of later school start times as a means of reducing adolescent sleepiness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) is a hazardous health behavior popular among young adults and college students. Past research has documented prevalence rates and risk factors associated with NMUPD, while little research has addressed protective factors. OBJECTIVE The present study examined the associations of religiosity and NMUPD in a sample of college students. METHODS Young adult (ages 18-25) college students (n = 767) completed an anonymous online survey assessing demographic variables, NMUPD, personality factors, perceptions of risk, mental health, and religiosity. RESULTS Results showed that greater religiosity scores were consistently associated with lower odds of engaging in NMUPD in the past 3 months. These associations were partially mediated by the personality characteristics of conscientiousness and openness to experience as well as perceived risk of NMUPD. The effect of religiosity on NMUPD was moderated by Greek (i.e., fraternity or sorority) membership, such that those in a Greek organization showed no relation between religiosity and NMUPD, while religiosity served as a protective factor for NMUPD among those who did not have Greek membership. CONCLUSION These results extend past research demonstrating that religiosity is protective against substance abuse/misuse. Greek status appears to negate the protective influence of religiosity on NMUPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the impact on college students' perceptions of nonmedical use of prescription stimulants (NMUPS) of motivation for use and gender. PARTICIPANTS Participants were college students (N=695) from 2 universities in different regions of the United States. METHODS Participants read a vignette describing a college student who used a prescription stimulant for a nonmedical purpose and rated their perception of that individual using a semantic differential. A 2 (participant gender) by 2 (gender of the individual described in the vignette) by 3 (motive for use: get high, study, lose weight) design was used. RESULTS The male who used a stimulant to study was rated significantly less negatively than if he used the stimulant to get high. NMUPS as a study aid was viewed the least negatively overall. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that gender does not, whereas motivation for use does, impact students' perceptions of NMUPS.
