Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis significantly increases the global disease burden and has become a major public health issue worldwide. China is a high-risk area for viral hepatitis, which is also a serious public health problem. METHODS The scaling relationship between various types of hepatitis and population size was explained by a scaling law. Fixed-effects and random-effects meta-analyses were used to calculate a combined index of β based on the single-scale index from 2004 to 2023. Furthermore, the X11 process was employed to identify the structural components of the time series of various types of hepatitis. RESULTS In the past 20 years, the proportion of patients with viral hepatitis in Zhejiang Province has changed significantly, and hepatitis B remains the main type of hepatitis, accounting for approximately 70% of all hepatitis cases. The proportion of hepatitis C and E cases has been increasing, whereas the proportion of hepatitis A cases has been decreasing since 2004 and has remained at a low level (approximately 3%) since 2010. The combined scaling exponents of hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis E and unclassified hepatitis based on the random effects model were 0.88 (95% confidence interval(CI): 0.78 to 0.98), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.70 to 0.86), 1.18 (95% CI: 1.11 to 1.26), 0.91 (95% CI: 0.86 to 0.97) and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.79 to 1.00), respectively. CONCLUSION In the past 20 years, the epidemic situation of hepatitis A, hepatitis B and unclassified hepatitis has shown a significant downward trend, whereas the proportions of hepatitis C and hepatitis E among those with viral hepatitis have increased annually. The combined scaling exponent and development trends of the five types of hepatitis show significant heterogeneity. Overall, hepatitis C exhibits superlinear characteristics, whereas other types of hepatitis exhibit sublinear characteristics. Different types of hepatitis exhibit distinct epidemic characteristics and require targeted prevention and control measures.

Abstract
Viral hepatitis, primarily caused by hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, is widely recognized for its impact on liver function, but emerging evidence suggests it also affects cognitive function. This review explores the causes, manifestations, and impact of cognitive impairments in patients with viral hepatitis, to better understand this often-overlooked aspect of the disease. A literature review was conducted, focusing on studies published in PubMed up to August 2024. Key areas covered include the pathophysiological mechanisms behind cognitive impairment in viral hepatitis, clinical manifestations observed in affected patients, the implications for their daily functioning and overall well-being, and the tools used in cognitive assessments. Common manifestations included deficits in attention, memory, executive function, and psychomotor speed. These cognitive challenges can significantly impact daily activities, occupational performance, and social interactions, contributing to reduced quality of life. Cognitive impairments in viral hepatitis patients represent a significant concern that extends beyond liver health. Recognizing and addressing these cognitive issues are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Enhanced diagnostic strategies and targeted interventions are needed to better manage cognitive symptoms and support affected individuals in maintaining their quality of life. This narrative review aims to enhance clinical practice and inform future research directions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at higher risk of contracting hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Currently, there is no estimate of pooled data on the prevalence of HBV and HCV infections among HCWs in the country. Thus, this review aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of hepatitis B and C infections among HCWs in Ethiopia. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Hinari, and African Journals Online to identify pertinent articles from the inception to April 2024. The protocol has been registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; CRD42024527940) and conducted per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Data were extracted independently by two authors and analyzed using STATA version 11 software. A random-effect model and Egger's test were computed to estimate the pooled prevalence and assess publication bias, respectively. RESULTS A total of 18 studies involving4,948 healthcare workers were included in this review to estimate the pooled prevalence of HBV and HCV infections among HCWs in Ethiopia. The overall prevalence of HBV was 5.93% (95% CI; 3.22-8.63). The sub-group analysis showed that the prevalence of HBV among medical waste handlers and health professionals was8.6% (95% CI; 3.01-14.13) and 4.98% (95% CI; 1.85-8.11), respectively. The combined prevalence of HCV was 1.12% (95% CI; -4.19-6.43). In the sub-group analysis, the prevalence of HCV among medical waste handlers and health professionals was1.44% (95% CI; -5.28-8.18) and 0.59% (95% CI; -8.09-9.27), respectively. CONCLUSION In this review, we found a higher (5.93%) and moderate (1.12%) prevalence of HBV and HCV infections, respectively among Ethiopian HCWs. Therefore, to reduce the infectious burden of HBV and HCV among HCWs; there is a need to strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures. In addition, adequate HBV vaccination coverage for HCWs is mandatory to reduce the burden of HBV infection in the country.

Abstract
Recent advances in studies exploring the roles of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in viral transmission and replication have illuminated hepatotropic viruses, such as hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis D (HDV), and hepatitis E (HEV). While previous investigations have uncovered these viruses' ability to exploit cellular EV pathways for replication and transmission, most have focused on the impacts of exosomal pathways. With an improved understanding of EVs, four main subtypes, including exosomes, microvesicles, large oncosomes, and apoptotic bodies, have been categorized based on size and biogenic pathways. However, there remains a noticeable gap in comprehensive reviews summarizing recent findings and outlining future perspectives for EV studies related to hepatotropic viruses. This review aims to consolidate insights into EV pathways utilized by hepatotropic viruses, offering guidance for the future research direction in this field. By comprehending the diverse range of hepatotropic virus-associated EVs and their role in cellular communication during productive viral infections, this review may offer valuable insights for targeting therapeutics and devising strategies to combat virulent hepatotropic virus infections and the associated incidence of liver cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B and C viruses are the major public health concerns of the globe. The two hepatotropic viruses share common modes of transmission and their co-infection is common. Despite the provision of an effective prevention mechanism, the infections caused by these viruses remain a significant problem worldwide, particularly among developing countries like Ethiopia. METHODS This institutional-based retrospective study was conducted between January 2014 December and December 2019 from documented laboratory logbooks of Adigrat general hospital serology laboratory, Tigrai, Ethiopia. data were collected and checked for completeness on a daily based, coded, entered, and cleaned using Epinfo version 7.1, exported and analyzed using SPSS version 23. Binary logistic regression analysis and Chi-square test (X2) assessed the association between dependent and independent variables. The corresponding variables with a P-value (P < 0.05) and 95% confidence interval were considered statistically significant. RESULTS Out of 20,935 clinically suspected individuals, 20,622 were given specimens and tested for hepatitis B and C viruses with total completeness of 98.5%. The overall prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus was found to be 3.57% (689/19,273) and 2.13% (30/1,405), respectively. The positivity rate of the hepatitis B virus was 8.0% (106/1317) and 3.24% (583/17,956) among males and females, respectively. Additionally, 2.49%( 12/481) of males and 1.94% (18/924) of females were positive for hepatitis C virus infection. The overall prevalence of co-infection for both hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus was 7.4% (4/54). Sex and age were significantly associated with hepatitis B and C virus infection. CONCLUSIONS The overall prevalence of hepatitis B and C is low intermediate according to the WHO criteria. Although there was a fluctuating trend of hepatitis B and C through the years 2014-2019, the result shows moreover declining trend. Both hepatitis B and C share similar routes of transmission and affect all age categories but males were more highly affected than females. Therefore, awareness creation of the community about the methods of transmission, education about prevention, and control of hepatitis B and C virus infection, and improving coverage of youth-friendly services in health facilities should be strengthened.

Abstract
To achieve the World Health Organization's (WHO) goals of eradicating viral hepatitis globally by 2030, the regional prevalence and epidemiology of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) coinfection must be known in order to implement preventiveon and treatment strategies. HBV/HDV coinfection is considered the most severe form of vira l hepatitis due to it's rapid progression towards cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-related death. The role of simplified diagnosticsis tools for screening and monitoring HBV/HDV-coinfected patients is crucial. Many sophisticated tools for diagnoses have been developed for detection of HBV alone as well as HBV/HDV coinfection. However, these advanced techniques are not widely available in low-income countries and there is no standardization for HDV detection assays, which are used for monitoring the response to antiviral therapy. More accessible and affordable alternative methods, such as rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), are being developed and validated for equipment-free and specific detection of HBV and HDV. This review will provide some insight into both existing and diagnosis tools under development, their applicability in developing countries and how they could increase screening, patient monitoring and treatment eligibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Migrants represent a key target population for viral hepatitis micro-elimination programs and are important targets for specific prevention, screening and treatment programs. AIMS To raise awareness on viral hepatitis among migrants and key stakeholders, assess the prevalence of HBV and HCV among migrants, and determine an optimal and scalable viral hepatitis screening and treatment protocol. MATERIAL AND METHODS Unselected, consecutive migrants reaching the costs of Italy were screened for HBV, HCV, HDV and HIV markers. Anagraphic and anamnestic information were used to identify viral hepatitis endemic hotspots in the countries of birth or transit. Personal data, including migration route, test results and treatment, were collected and stored in a dedicated database RESULTS: 362 patients were recruited in 2019; median age was 28 years, 71% were male. Most of the patients were African (54%) or Asian (40%). 49% positive for at least one HBV marker: 2.2% HBsAg (asymptomatic carriers with low viremia); 10.6% anti-HBs; 28.5% anti-HBs and anti-HBc, 1.7% anti-HCV, 0.6% anti-HIV, with low or undetectable viral load. Libya was the nexus shared by most of the positive, reactive cases. HCV and HIV markers were only found in migrants already resident in Italy for more than 6-12 months. CONCLUSION Low to moderate prevalence of hepatitis B markers were observed in African and Asian first arrival migrants. Migrants positive for HCV and HIV likely acquired the infection after arrival in Italy, suggesting migrants are at risk of contracting viral infections once in Italy, highlighting the importance of ensuring access to prevention for migrant communities.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection accelerates liver fibrosis progression compared with HBV or HCV monoinfection. Octamer binding transcription factor 4 (OCT4) and Nanog are direct targets of the profibrogenic TGF-β1 signaling cascade. We leveraged a coculture model to monitor the effects of HBV and HCV coinfection on fibrogenesis in both sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide-transfected Huh7.5.1 hepatoma cells and LX2 hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). We used CRISPR-Cas9 to knock out OCT4 and Nanog to evaluate their effects on HBV-, HCV-, or TGF-β1-induced liver fibrogenesis. HBV/HCV coinfection and HBx, HBV preS2, HCV Core, and HCV NS2/3 overexpression increased TGF-β1 mRNA levels in sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide-Huh7.5.1 cells compared with controls. HBV/HCV coinfection further enhanced profibrogenic gene expression relative to HBV or HCV monoinfection. Coculture of HBV and HCV monoinfected or HBV/HCV coinfected hepatocytes with LX2 cells significantly increased profibrotic gene expression and LX2 cell invasion and migration. OCT4 and Nanog guide RNA independently suppressed HBV-, HCV-, HBV/HCV-, and TGF-β1-induced α-SMA, TIMP-1, and Col1A1 expression and reduced Huh7.5.1, LX2, primary hepatocyte, and primary human HSC migratory capacity. OCT4/Nanog protein expression also correlated positively with fibrosis stage in liver biopsies from patients with chronic HBV or HCV infection. In conclusion, HBV and HCV independently and cooperatively promote liver fibrogenesis through a TGF-β1-induced OCT4/Nanog-dependent pathway.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) come with the promise to be highly versatile, useful artificial receptors for sensing a wide variety of analytes. Despite a very large body of literature on imprinting, the number of papers addressing real-life biological samples and analytes is somewhat limited. Furthermore, the topic of MIP-based sensor design is still, rather, in the research stage and lacks wide-spread commercialization. This review summarizes recent advances of MIP-based sensors targeting biological species. It covers systems that are potentially interesting in medical applications/diagnostics, in detecting illicit substances, environmental analysis, and in the quality control of food. The main emphasis is placed on work that demonstrates application in real-life matrices, including those that are diluted in a reasonable manner. Hence, it does not restrict itself to the transducer type, but focusses on both materials and analytical tasks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People living in settlement projects represent an emergent rural population in Brazil. Data on their health is scarce and there are no data on viral hepatitis in this population. This study investigated the epidemiology of viral hepatitis A-E in residents of settlement projects in central Brazil. METHODS During 2011 and 2012, 923 people living in rural settlements in central Brazil were interviewed and tested to estimate the prevalence of exposure to viral hepatitis A-E, to identify the circulating hepatitis B virus (HBV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes and risk factors for HBV exposure and to evaluate adherence to the hepatitis B vaccination series. RESULTS Overall, 85.9, 3.9, 0.4 and 17.3% of individuals showed evidence of exposure to hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis E virus, HCV and HBV, respectively. Among HBV-DNA positive samples (n=8), subgenotypes A1 (n=3) and A2 (n=1) and genotype D/subgenotype D3 (n=4) were identified. Hepatitis D virus superinfection was detected in 0/16 HBsAg-positive participants. A total of 229 individuals showed serological evidence of HBV vaccination. In total, 442 settlers were eligible for vaccination, but only 150 individuals completed the vaccine series. All anti-HCV-positive samples (n=4) were also HCV-RNA positive and identified as subtype 1a. CONCLUSIONS The intermediate endemicity of HAV, the higher prevalence of HBV exposure compared with urban areas and the low compliance with HBV vaccination requires preventive measures focused on rural populations, emphasizing the need for HAV and HBV vaccination.

Abstract
Hepatitis viruses are chief pathogens of hepatitis and end-stage liver diseases. Their replication and related pathogenic process highly rely on the host micro-environment and multiple cellular elements, including exosomes. Representing with a sort of cell-derived vesicle structure, exosomes were considered to be dispensable cellular components, even wastes. Along with advancing investigation, a specific profile of exosome in driving hepatitis viruses' infection and hepatic disease progression is revealed. Exosomes greatly affect the pathogenesis of hepatitis viruses by mediating their replication and modulating the host immune responses. The characteristics of host exosomes are markedly changed after infection with hepatitis viruses. Exosomes released from hepatitis virus-infected cells can carry viral nucleic or protein components, thereby acting as an effective subterfuge for hepatitis viruses by participating in viral transportation and immune escape. On the contrary, immune cell-derived exosomes contribute toward the innate antiviral immune defense and virus eradication. There is growing evidence supporting the application of exosomal biomarkers for predicting disease progress or therapeutic outcome, while exosomal nanoshuttles are regarded as promising therapeutic options based on their delivery properties and immune compatibility. In this review, we summarize the biogenesis and secretion mechanism of exosomes, review the recent findings pertaining to the role of exosomes in the interplay between hepatitis viruses and innate immune responses, and conclude their potential in further therapeutic application.

Abstract
The study aimed to describe the epidemiological, virological and clinical features of sporadic HEV infection in eastern China. A total of 6112 patient sera were tested for anti-HEV IgG or anti-HEV IgM during one consecutive year (between August 2018 and July 2019). HEV RNA presence was evaluated by RT-PCR and HEV sequences were phylogenetically analyzed. Clinical features of confirmed HEV-infected patients were delineated. The sero-positivity rate of anti-HEV IgG maintained stable around 40%, while an obvious winter spike of anti-HEV IgM prevalence was observed. A total of 111 patients were confirmed of HEV viremia by molecular diagnosis. Subtype 4d was predominant. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that certain strains circulate across species and around the country. Subjects with confirmed current HEV infection had a high median age (58 years) and males were predominant (62.2%). Most patients presented with jaundice (75.7%) and anorexia (68.0%). Significantly elevated levels of liver enzymes and bilirubin were observed. Remarkably, the baseline bilirubin level was positively correlated with illness severity. Pre-existing HBV carriage may deteriorate illness. The clinical burden caused by locally acquired HEV infection is increasing. Surveillance should be enforced especially during the transition period from winter to spring. Patients with higher level of bilirubin at disease onset had slower recovery from HEV infection.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study is to quantify the burden caused by viral hepatitis in China from 1990 to 2016. Methods Data from the GBD 2016 study were extracted to calculate incidence, prevalence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Trends in DALYs were assessed in 33 provinces/regions. Results From 1990 to 2016, the total incidence of hepatitis decreased by 88.5%. However, the prevalence of hepatitis (counts in thousands), increased by 37.6% from 153,856 (95% UI: 136,047-172,319) in 1990 to 211,721 (95% UI: 179,776-240,981) in 2016, with age-standardized prevalence rates changing slightly. The number and age-standardized rates of prevalence increased by 35.9 and 1.6% for hepatitis B, respectively, and by 81.8 and 30.4% for hepatitis C. Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan had the highest age-standardized prevalence rates (≥16,500 per 100,000). Tibet, Qinghai and Gansu had the highest age-standardized DALYs rates (≥40 per 100,000). The largest absolute number of DALYs was observed in the 15–49 year age group in 2016. The highest rate of DALYs occurred in males aged 50–69 years and in females aged ≧70 years. Conclusion The incidence and DALYs of viral hepatitis decreased dramatically from 1990 to 2016. However, the prevalence still remains at a high level, which may result in heavy burdens in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We describe a patient who was planned to receive a kidney transplant from his wife. Both were infected with Hepatitis A virus (HAV) two weeks prior to the planned transplantation. Due to prolonged shedding of HAV (up until 126 days) we decided to postpone the kidney transplant in order to prevent long term complications. OBJECTIVES The main question in this case was is there a higher risk of a complicated course of HAV-infection after kidney transplantation? We discuss the need for upscale of preventative measures of HAV infections in solid organ transplant candidates. STUDY DESIGN We performed a literature study on risks of a complicated course of HAV in solid organ transplant recipients and performed a seroprevalence study on anti-HAV in a cohort of 106 hemodialysis patients. RESULTS Little is known whether HAV infection in solid organ transplant patients causes a more aggressive course of diseases. However, HAV infections in these populations are associated with increased risk of liver failure. Abstract
Background The relationships between polymorphisms in interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene and the risk of viral hepatitis remain inconclusive. Therefore, the authors conducted so far the very first meta-analysis to robustly assess the relationships between polymorphisms in IL-10 gene and the risk of viral hepatitis by integrating the results of previous works. Methods Medline, Embase, Wanfang, VIP and CNKI were searched throughly for eligible studies, and 76 genetic association studies were finally included in this meta-analysis. Results We noticed that rs1800871 (− 819 C/T), rs1800872 (− 592 C/A) and rs1800896 (− 1082 G/A) polymorphisms were all significantly associated with the risk of viral hepatitis in Asians, whereas only rs1800896 (− 1082 G/A) polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of viral hepatitis in Caucasians. In further analyses by disease subtypes, we noticed that the three investigated polymorphisms were all significantly associated with the risk of both HBV and HCV. Conclusions This meta-analysis demonstrates that rs1800871 (− 819 C/T), rs1800872 (− 592 C/A) and rs1800896 (− 1082 G/A) polymorphisms may influence the risk of viral hepatitis in Asians, while only rs1800896 (− 1082 G/A) polymorphism may influence the risk of viral hepatitis in Caucasians. In further analyses by disease subtypes, we noticed that the three investigated polymorphisms may influence the risk of both HBV and HCV.

Abstract
Liver cancer is the third most common cause of cancer related death in the World. From an epidemiological point of view the risk factors associated to primary liver cancer are mainly viral hepatitis infection and alcohol consumption. Even though there is a clear correlation between liver inflammation, cirrhosis and cancer, other emerging liver diseases (like fatty liver) could also lead to liver cancer. Moreover, the liver is the major site of metastasis from colon, breast, ovarian and other cancers. In this review we will address the peculiar status of the liver as organ that has to balance between tolerance and immune activation. We will focus on macrophages and other key cellular components of the liver microenvironment that play a central role during tumor progression. We will also discuss how current and future therapies may affect the balance toward immune activation.

Relationship of genetic polymorphisms in CTLA-4 and IL-18 with viral hepatitis: evidence from a meta-analysis. Epidemiol Infect 2019; 147:e313. Abstract
Relationship of genetic polymorphisms in cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) with susceptibility to viral hepatitis was already investigated by many association studies. The aim of this study was to more comprehensively analyse associations between genetic polymorphisms in CTLA-4/IL-18 and viral hepatitis by combing the results of all relevant association studies. We searched Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science and CNKI for eligible studies. We used Review Manager to combine the results of eligible studies. Thirty-seven studies were finally included in this meta-analysis. Combined results demonstrated that CTLA-4 rs231775 (recessive comparison: OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.11-1.55), IL-18 rs1946518 (dominant comparison: OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.75-0.90; recessive comparison: OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.11-1.50; allele comparison: OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.68-0.86) and IL-18 rs187238 (dominant comparison: OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.03-1.52; allele comparison: OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.05-1.37) polymorphisms were all significantly associated with viral hepatitis in the general population. Further subgroup analyses revealed that CTLA-4 rs231775, IL-18 rs1946518 and IL-18 rs187238 polymorphisms were significantly associated with susceptibility to hepatitis B virus (HBV), especially among East Asians. Moreover, CTLA-4 rs5742909, IL-18 rs1946518 and IL-18 rs187238 polymorphisms were also significantly associated with susceptibility to hepatitis C virus (HCV), especially among South Asians. So to conclude, this meta-analysis demonstrated that CTLA-4 rs231775, IL-18 rs1946518 and IL-18 rs187238 polymorphisms may confer susceptibility to HBV in East Asians, while CTLA-4 rs5742909, IL-18 rs1946518 and IL-18 rs187238 polymorphisms may confer susceptibility to HCV in South Asians.

Abstract
Some previous genetic association studies have tried to investigate potential associations between mannose-binding lectin (MBL) polymorphisms and viral hepatitis. However, the results of those studies were not consistent. Therefore, we performed the current meta-analysis to explore associations between MBL polymorphisms and viral hepatitis in a large pooled population. A systematic literature research of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and CNKI was performed to identify eligible studies for pooled analyses. We used Review Manager version 5.3.3 to conduct statistical analyses. In total, 27 studies were included for analysis (4840 cases and 5729 controls). The pooled analyses showed that MBL promoter (-211C/G, dominant model: P = 0.0002, I2 = 40%; over-dominant model: P = 0.0001, I2 = 22%) and exon 1 (codon 52, 54 and 57, dominant model: P = 0.04, I2 = 49%; allele model: P = 0.01, I2 = 48%) polymorphisms were both significantly associated with viral hepatitis in the overall population. Further subgroup analyses revealed similarly significant findings for MBL promoter polymorphism in HBV and HCV, but no positive results were detected in subgroup analyses for MBL exon 1 polymorphism. These results suggested that MBL promoter and exon 1 polymorphisms could be used to identify individuals at higher susceptibility to HBV and HCV.

Abstract
This is a brief summary of the prevalence on Hepatitis C (HCV) and Hepatitis B (HBV) viral infections and associated risk factors in Type 2 diabetes subjects. Prevalence of HBV (9%) was higher compared to HCV (2%) infection in the screened 388 subjects. Results showed that these infections are independent of the liver damage. Risk factors prominently observed among positive HCV and HBV cases were longer duration of diabetes, hospital admission, history of jaundice and history of surgeries which enlightened the importance of hepatitis vaccination once the subject is diagnosed with diabetes.

Abstract
A major outbreak of Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) has swept through Europe between mid-2016 and 2017, mainly within the community of men who have sex with men (MSM). Over the same period, about 1000 outbreak-related cases of acute Hepatitis A (AHA) were recorded in Lazio region, Italy. We calibrated a Bayesian model to reconstruct likely transmission events within all 44 households where multiple infections were recorded, representing a total of 103 cases from the HAV outbreak in Lazio. Based on information on the observed times of symptom onset, we estimated the probability distribution function of the HAV generation time and used it to compute the effective and instantaneous reproduction numbers for the considered outbreak from the overall epidemic curve (N = 998 cases). We estimated a mean generation time of 30.2 days (95%CI: 25.2-33.0) and an effective reproduction number of about 1.63 (95% CI: 1.35-1.94). Transmissibility peaked in January 2017, shortly before targeted awareness and vaccination campaigns were put in place by health authorities; however, transmission remained above the epidemic threshold until June 2017. Within households, children (0-15) and young adults (16-30) infected preferentially individuals of the same age class, whereas transmission within older age groups was substantially homogeneous. These results suggest that the implemented interventions were able to slow down HAV transmission, but not to bring it rapidly to a halt. According to our estimates of the HAV transmissibility, about 50% of the at-risk persons should be immunized to prevent similar outbreaks in the future. Our results also indicate spillover from community transmission to household members, suggesting the opportunity of vaccinating household contacts of cases to prevent further spread of the epidemics.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic disease affecting humans globally. During the last few years, the incidence of diabetes has increased and has received more attention. In addition to growing DM populations, DM complications are involving injuries to more organs, such as the heart and cerebral vessel damage. DM complications can reduce quality of life and shorten life spans and eventually also impede social and economic development. Therefore, effective measures to curb the occurrence and development of diabetes assist in improving patients' quality of life, delay the progression of DM in the population, and ease a social burden. The liver is regarded as an important link in the management and control of DM, including the alleviation of glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism and others via glucose storage and endogenous glucose generation from glycogen stored in the liver. Liver cirrhosis is a very common chronic disease, which often lowers the quality of life and decreases life expectancy. According to a growing body of research, diabetes shows a close correlation with hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Moreover, coexistence of liver complications would accelerate the deterioration of patients with diabetes. Liver cirrhosis and diabetes influence each other. Thus, in addition to pharmacological treatments and lifestyle interventions, effective control of cirrhosis might assist in a better management of diabetes. When it comes to different etiologies of liver cirrhosis, different therapeutic methods, such as antiviral treatment, may be more effective. Effective control of cirrhosis might be a strategy for better management of diabetes.
