Caloric curves of classical self-gravitating systems in general relativity

Random Transitions of a Binary Star in the Canonical Ensemble

After reviewing the peculiar thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of self-gravitating systems, we consider the case of a "binary star" consisting of two particles of size a in gravitational interaction in a box of radius R. The caloric curve of this system displays a region of negative specific heat in the microcanonical ensemble, which is replaced by a first-order phase transition in the canonical ensemble. The free energy viewed as a thermodynamic potential exhibits two local minima that correspond to two metastable states separated by an unstable maximum forming a barrier of potential. By introducing a Langevin equation to model the interaction of the particles with the thermal bath, we study the random transitions of the system between a "dilute" state, where the particles are well separated, and a "condensed" state, where the particles are bound together. We show that the evolution of the system is given by a Fokker-Planck equation in energy space and that the lifetime of a metastable state is given by the Kramers formula involving the barrier of free energy. This is a particular case of the theory developed in a previous paper (Chavanis, 2005) for N Brownian particles in gravitational interaction associated with the canonical ensemble. In the case of a binary star (N=2), all the quantities can be calculated exactly analytically. We compare these results with those obtained in the mean field limit N→+∞.

Scale-free chaos in the confined Vicsek flocking model

The Vicsek model encompasses the paradigm of active dry matter. Motivated by collective behavior of insects in swarms, we have studied finite-size effects and criticality in the three-dimensional, harmonically confined Vicsek model. We have discovered a phase transition that exists for appropriate noise and small confinement strength. On the critical line of confinement versus noise, swarms are in a state of scale-free chaos characterized by minimal correlation time, correlation length proportional to swarm size and topological data analysis. The critical line separates dispersed single clusters from confined multicluster swarms. Scale-free chaotic swarms occupy a compact region of space and comprise a recognizable "condensed" nucleus and particles leaving and entering it. Susceptibility, correlation length, dynamic correlation function, and largest Lyapunov exponent obey power laws. The critical line and a narrow criticality region close to it move simultaneously to zero confinement strength for infinitely many particles. At the end of the first chaotic window of confinement, there is another phase transition to infinitely dense clusters of finite size that may be termed flocking black holes.

New Bounds for the Mass of Warm Dark Matter Particles Using Results from Fermionic King Model

After reviewing several aspects about the thermodynamics of self-gravitating systems that undergo the evaporation (escape) of their constituents, some recent results obtained in the framework of fermionic King model are applied here to the analysis of galactic halos considering warm dark matter (WDM) particles. According to the present approach, the reported structural parameters of dwarf galaxies are consistent with the existence of a WDM particle with mass in the keV scale. Assuming that the dwarf galaxy Willman 1 belongs to the region III of fermionic King model (whose gravothermal collapse is a continuous phase transition), one obtains the interval 1.2 keV ≤ m ≤ 2.6 keV for the mass of WDM particle. This analysis improves previous estimates by de Vega and co-workers [Astropart. Phys. 46 (2013) 14–22] considering both the quantum degeneration and the incidence of the constituents evaporation. This same analysis evidences that most of galaxies are massive enough to undergo a violent gravothermal collapse (a discontinuous microcanonical phase transition) that leads to the formation of a degenerate core of WDM particles. It is also suggested that quantum-relativistic processes governing the cores of large galaxies (e.g., the formation of supermassive black holes) are somehow related to the gravothermal collapse of the WDM degenerate cores when the total mass of these systems are comparable to the quantum-relativistic characteristic mass Mc=ℏc/G3/2m−2≃1012M⊙ obtained for WDM particles with mass m in the keV scale. The fact that a WDM particle with mass in the keV scale seems to be consistent with the observed properties of dwarf and large galaxies provides a strong support to this dark matter candidate.
