A Weighted EFOR Algorithm for Dynamic Parametrical Model Identification of the Nonlinear System

In this paper, the Nonlinear Auto-Regressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) model with parameters of interest for design (NARX-M-for-D), where the design parameter of the system is connected to the coefficients of the NARX model by a predefined polynomial function is studied. For the NARX-M-for-D of nonlinear systems, in practice, to predict the output by design parameter values are often difficult due to the uncertain relationship between the design parameter and the coefficients of the NARX model. To solve this issue and conduct the analysis and design, an improved algorithm, defined as the Weighted Extended Forward Orthogonal Regression (WEFOR), is proposed. Firstly, the initial NARX-M-for-D is obtained through the traditional Extended Forward Orthogonal Regression (EFOR) algorithm. Then a weight matrix is introduced to modify the polynomial functions with respect to the design parameter, and then an improved model, which is referred to as the final NARX-M-for-D is established. The genetic algorithm (GA) is used for deriving the weight matrix by minimizing the normalized mean square error (NMSE) over the data sets corresponding to the design parameter values used for modeling and first prediction. Finally, both the numerical and experimental studies are conducted to demonstrate the application of the WEFOR algorithm. The results indicate that the final NARX-M-for-D can accurately predict the system output of a nonlinear system. The new algorithm is expected to provide a reliable model for dynamic analysis and design of the nonlinear system.

Identification of Linear and Nonlinear Sensory Processing Circuits from Spiking Neuron Data

Inferring mathematical models of sensory processing systems directly from input-output observations, while making the fewest assumptions about the model equations and the types of measurements available, is still a major issue in computational neuroscience. This letter introduces two new approaches for identifying sensory circuit models consisting of linear and nonlinear filters in series with spiking neuron models, based only on the sampled analog input to the filter and the recorded spike train output of the spiking neuron. For an ideal integrate-and-fire neuron model, the first algorithm can identify the spiking neuron parameters as well as the structure and parameters of an arbitrary nonlinear filter connected to it. The second algorithm can identify the parameters of the more general leaky integrate-and-fire spiking neuron model, as well as the parameters of an arbitrary linear filter connected to it. Numerical studies involving simulated and real experimental recordings are used to demonstrate the applicability and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms.

Sparse multivariate autoregressive modeling for mild cognitive impairment classification

Brain connectivity network derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in the researches related to cognitive and perceptual processes. The capability to detect causal or effective connectivity is highly desirable for understanding the cooperative nature of brain network, particularly when the ultimate goal is to obtain good performance of control-patient classification with biological meaningful interpretations. Understanding directed functional interactions between brain regions via brain connectivity network is a challenging task. Since many genetic and biomedical networks are intrinsically sparse, incorporating sparsity property into connectivity modeling can make the derived models more biologically plausible. Accordingly, we propose an effective connectivity modeling of resting-state fMRI data based on the multivariate autoregressive (MAR) modeling technique, which is widely used to characterize temporal information of dynamic systems. This MAR modeling technique allows for the identification of effective connectivity using the Granger causality concept and reducing the spurious causality connectivity in assessment of directed functional interaction from fMRI data. A forward orthogonal least squares (OLS) regression algorithm is further used to construct a sparse MAR model. By applying the proposed modeling to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) classification, we identify several most discriminative regions, including middle cingulate gyrus, posterior cingulate gyrus, lingual gyrus and caudate regions, in line with results reported in previous findings. A relatively high classification accuracy of 91.89 % is also achieved, with an increment of 5.4 % compared to the fully-connected, non-directional Pearson-correlation-based functional connectivity approach.

Application of L1-norm regularization to epicardial potential reconstruction based on gradient projection

The epicardial potential (EP)-targeted inverse problem of electrocardiography (ECG) has been widely investigated as it is demonstrated that EPs reflect underlying myocardial activity. It is a well-known ill-posed problem as small noises in input data may yield a highly unstable solution. Traditionally, L2-norm regularization methods have been proposed to solve this ill-posed problem. But the L2-norm penalty function inherently leads to considerable smoothing of the solution, which reduces the accuracy of distinguishing abnormalities and locating diseased regions. Directly using the L1-norm penalty function, however, may greatly increase computational complexity due to its non-differentiability. We propose an L1-norm regularization method in order to reduce the computational complexity and make rapid convergence possible. Variable splitting is employed to make the L1-norm penalty function differentiable based on the observation that both positive and negative potentials exist on the epicardial surface. Then, the inverse problem of ECG is further formulated as a bound-constrained quadratic problem, which can be efficiently solved by gradient projection in an iterative manner. Extensive experiments conducted on both synthetic data and real data demonstrate that the proposed method can handle both measurement noise and geometry noise and obtain more accurate results than previous L2- and L1-norm regularization methods, especially when the noises are large.

A new variational method for erythrocyte velocity estimation in wide-field imaging in vivo

Measuring erythrocyte velocity in individual microvessels has important applications for biomedical and functional imaging. Recent multiphoton fluorescence microscopy approaches require injecting fluorescent tracers; moreover, only one or few vessels can be imaged at a time. To overcome these shortcomings, we used CCD-based optical imaging of intrinsic absorption changes in macroscopic vascular networks to record erythrocytes' trajectories over several mm (2) of cortical surface. We then demonstrate the feasibility of erythrocyte velocity estimation from such wide-field data, using two robust, independent, algorithms. The first one is a recently published Radon transform-based algorithm that estimates erythrocyte velocity locally. We adapt it to data obtained in wide-field imaging and show, for the first time, its performance on such datasets. The second ("fasttrack") algorithm is novel. It is based on global energy minimization techniques to estimate the full spatiotemporal erythrocytes' trajectories inside vessels. We test the two algorithms on both simulated and biological data, obtained in rat cerebral cortex in a spreading depression experiment. On vessels with medium-slow erythrocyte velocities both algorithms performed well, allowing their usage as benchmark one for another. However, our novel fasttrack algorithm outperformed the other one for higher velocities, as encountered in the arterial network.

Optimisation on the least squares identification of dynamical systems with application to hemodynamic modelling

Dynamic modelling using the traditional least squares method with noisy input/output data can yield biased and sometimes unstable model predictions. This is largely because the cost function employed by the traditional least squares method is based on the one-step-ahead prediction errors. In this paper, the model-predicted-output errors are used in estimating the model parameters. As the cost function is highly nonlinear in terms of the model parameters, the particle swarm optimisation method is used to search for the optimal parameters. We will show that compared with model predictions using the traditional least squares method, the model-predicted-output approach is more robust at dealing with noisy input/output data. The algorithm is applied to identify the dynamic relationship between changes in cerebral blood flow and volume due to evoked changes in neural activity and is shown to produce better predictions than that using the least squares method.

A time-invariant visco-elastic windkessel model relating blood flow and blood volume

The difference between the rate of change of cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) following stimulation is thought to be due to circumferential stress relaxation in veins (Mandeville, J.B., Marota, J.J.A., Ayata, C., Zaharchuk, G., Moskowitz, M.A., Rosen, B.R., Weisskoff, R.M., 1999. Evidence of a cerebrovascular postarteriole windkessel with delayed compliance. J. Cereb. Blood Flow Metab. 19, 679-689). In this paper we explore the visco-elastic properties of blood vessels, and present a dynamic model relating changes in CBF to changes in CBV. We refer to this model as the visco-elastic windkessel (VW) model. A novel feature of this model is that the parameter characterising the pressure-volume relationship of blood vessels is treated as a state variable dependent on the rate of change of CBV, producing hysteresis in the pressure-volume space during vessel dilation and contraction. The VW model is nonlinear time-invariant, and is able to predict the observed differences between the time series of CBV and that of CBF measurements following changes in neural activity. Like the windkessel model derived by Mandeville, J.B., Marota, J.J.A., Ayata, C., Zaharchuk, G., Moskowitz, M.A., Rosen, B.R., Weisskoff, R.M., 1999. Evidence of a cerebrovascular postarteriole windkessel with delayed compliance. J. Cereb. Blood Flow Metab. 19, 679-689, the VW model is primarily a model of haemodynamic changes in the venous compartment. The VW model is demonstrated to have the following characteristics typical of visco-elastic materials: (1) hysteresis, (2) creep, and (3) stress relaxation, hence it provides a unified model of the visco-elastic properties of the vasculature. The model will not only contribute to the interpretation of the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signals from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) experiments, but also find applications in the study and modelling of the brain vasculature and the haemodynamics of circulatory and cardiovascular systems.
