A comparative evaluation of equivalent circuit and finite element electrical skin modelling techniques

Mathematical models are essential to our understanding of the electrical properties of the skin. In this paper, two types of simulation model, an equivalent circuit and a finite element simulation were investigated and compared to evaluate their accuracy. Impedance spectra were measured, between 100 Hz and 50 MHz, (the limits of the available spectrum analyser) of a pair of electrodes placed on skin and these spectra used to find the parameters of a standard equivalent circuit model. The resulting indicated that the components of the equivalent circuit may represent different parts of the skin physiology that indicated by the literature. A simulation model was constructed in COMSOL, with the dimensions, permittivity and conductivity of each skin layer taken from across the published literature. This model was tested for sensitivity to the thicknesses of tissue layers as well as the shape of the boundary between layers. It was found that changing the layer thicknesses only had a significant effect for thestratum corneumand dermis, and that changing the shape of the boundary between layers created an impedance change of up to two times at certain higher frequencies (>1 kHz). While the impedance curves generated by the two models had the same overall profile, there was a difference of up to 100 times in their DC impedance values. This indicated that the broad understanding of how electrical signals of different frequencies pass through the skin is correct, but that significant insufficiencies exist in the published properties of the skin layers, particularly thestratum corneumand that finding more accurate values for these properties is necessary for the development of better models.

Multiscale Model Development for Electrical Properties of Thyroid and Parathyroid Tissues

Goal: Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been suggested as a possible technique to differentiate between thyroid and parathyroid tissue during surgery. This study aims to explore this potential using computational models to simulate the impedance spectra of these tissues, and examine how they are influenced by specific differences in tissue composition and morphology. Materials and methods: Finite element models of thyroid and parathyroid tissues at multiple scales were created, and simulated spectra were compared to existing data collected using ZedScanTM probe during surgery. Geometrical and material properties were varied in a local sensitivity study to assess their relative influence. Results: Both simulated and measured EIS parathyroid spectra show a higher [Formula: see text] dispersion frequency relative to thyroid. However, impedances exhibit overlap at frequencies below 100 kHz. A computational sensitivity study identified uncertainties in extracellular space dimensions, and properties of colloid and fascia compartments as having a significant effect on simulated impedance spectra characteristics. Conclusions: We have demonstrated the utility of our multiscale model in simulating impedance spectra and providing insight into their sensitivity to variations in tissue features. Our results suggest that distinguishing between the thyroid and parathyroid spectra is challenging, but could be improved by constraining the properties of colloid and fascia through further computational or experimental research.

Mechanistic Multilayer Model for Non-invasive Bioimpedance of Intact Skin

An approximate semi-analytical solution based on a Hankel transform of a mechanistic model for electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is derived for a non-invasive axisymmetric concentric probe with m electrodes measuring the response of n layers of human skin. We validate the semi-analytical solution for the case when the skin is treated as a three-layer entity - (i) stratum corneum, (ii) viable skin comprising living epidermis and dermis and (iii) adipose tissue - on the volar forearm in the frequency range 1 kHz to 1 MHz with experimental EIS measurements of 120 young subjects. Overall, we find good agreement for both the mean magnitude and phase of the impedance as well as the natural variability between subjects. Finally, the semi-analytical solution is verified with the full set of equations solved numerically: Good agreement is found for the point-wise potential distribution in the three skin layers.

Volume conductor model of transcutaneous electrical stimulation with kilohertz signals

OBJECTIVE

Incorporating high-frequency components in transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) waveforms may make it possible to stimulate deeper nerve fibers since the impedance of tissue declines with increasing frequency. However, the mechanisms of high-frequency TES remain largely unexplored. We investigated the properties of TES with frequencies beyond those typically used in neural stimulation.

APPROACH

We implemented a multilayer volume conductor model including dispersion and capacitive effects, coupled to a cable model of a nerve fiber. We simulated voltage- and current-controlled transcutaneous stimulation, and quantified the effects of frequency on the distribution of potentials and fiber excitation. We also quantified the effects of a novel transdermal amplitude modulated signal (TAMS) consisting of a non-zero offset sinusoidal carrier modulated by a square-pulse train.

MAIN RESULTS

The model revealed that high-frequency signals generated larger potentials at depth than did low frequencies, but this did not translate into lower stimulation thresholds. Both TAMS and conventional rectangular pulses activated more superficial fibers in addition to the deeper, target fibers, and at no frequency did we observe an inversion of the strength-distance relationship. Current regulated stimulation was more strongly influenced by fiber depth, whereas voltage regulated stimulation was more strongly influenced by skin thickness. Finally, our model reproduced the threshold-frequency relationship of experimentally measured motor thresholds.

SIGNIFICANCE

The model may be used for prediction of motor thresholds in TES, and contributes to the understanding of high-frequency TES.

Electrical impedance spectroscopy and the diagnostic accuracy for malignant melanoma

BACKGROUND

The accuracy of diagnosis of skin cancer and especially of early malignant melanoma is most important to reduce its morbidity and mortality. Previous pilot studies using electrical impedance measurements indicate statistically significant accuracies for the detection of skin cancer.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to investigate the accuracy of electrical impedance spectra to distinguish between malignant melanoma and benign skin lesions using an automated classification algorithm.

PATIENTS/METHODS

Electrical impedance spectra were measured in a multi-centre study at 12 clinics around Europe. Data from 285 histologically analysed lesions were used to train an algorithm to sort out lesions for automatic detection of melanoma. Another data cohort of 210 blinded lesions (148 various benign lesions and 62 malignant melanomas where 38 being from Breslow thickness ≤1 mm) from 183 patients was thereafter used to estimate the accuracy of the technique.

RESULTS

Observed sensitivity to malignant melanoma is 95% (59/62) and observed specificity 49% (72/148).

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggest that electrical impedance spectra can distinguish between malignant melanoma and benign skin lesions. Although it is indicated that the accuracy of the device is clinically promising, the overall performance, and the sensitivity to thin malignant melanomas, must be improved and thoroughly validated before the instrument can be used as a routine stand-alone diagnostic decision support tool. The technique is under revision to further improve the reproducibility, specificity and sensitivity.

Electric-field intrabody communication channel modeling with finite-element method

Electric-field intrabody communication (EF-IBC) is a promising new scheme for the data exchange among wearable biomedical sensors. It uses the body as the signal transmission media. Compared with existing body area network (BAN) schemes, EF-IBC can achieve higher data rate with less transmission power. Until now, the detailed EF-IBC channel mechanism is not well understood. In this work, finite-element method (FEM) is utilized for the first time to investigate the EF-IBC channel. A circuit-coupled FEM model is established for the EF-IBC channel. The FEM model is extensively verified by experimental measurements. The new physical model enables the revelation of characteristics and effects of different components in the EF-IBC channel. The FEM investigation finds that the capacitive return path is critical to the characteristics of the EF-IBC channel. Parameters of the capacitive return path are quantitatively measured. The investigation also finds that the body plays an important role to the return path capacitance. The forward body path can be well modeled by a cascade of π-shaped circuits. Based on the FEM model of the EF-IBC channel, a simplified circuit model is derived to provide an efficient tool for the transceiver design.
