The impact of higher-order aberrations on the strength of directional signals produced by accommodative microfluctuations

Temporal fluctuations in defocus may reverse the acuity loss encountered with induced refractive errors

A recent template-matching model hypothesized that simulated visual acuity loss with uncorrected refractive errors may be recovered by adding temporal defocus fluctuations up to the magnitude of the refractive error. Acuity recovery saturates or gets attenuated beyond this magnitude. These predictions were confirmed for monocular high-contrast visual acuity of 10 young, cyclopleged adults with 0.5-2.0D of induced myopia combined with the same range of temporal defocus fluctuations at 4.0 Hz frequency. The outcomes reinforce that spatial resolution may be optimized by averaging time-varying defocus over the entire stimulus presentation epoch or around the point of least defocus within this epoch.

Cognitive Demand and Accommodative Microfluctuations

Previous studies have shown cognition to have an influence on accommodation. Temporal variation in the accommodative response occurs during the fixation on a stationary target. This constantly shifting response has been called accommodative micro-fluctuations (AMFs). The aim of this study is to determine the effects of increasing task cognitive demand on the ocular accommodation response. AMFs for 12 myopes and 12 emmetropes were measured under three conditions of varying cognitive demand and comprising reading of numbers (Num), simple arithmetic (SA), and complex arithmetic (CA). Fast Fourier transforms were used to analyze the different frequency band components of the AMFs. Other aspects of AMFs including root mean square accommodation values and chaos analysis was applied. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant main effect of cognition in the mean power of the high frequency component (HFC) (F_2,44 = 10.03, p < 0.005). Pairwise analyses revealed that these differences exist between SA and CA tasks (p < 0.005) and the Num and CA (p < 0.005) tasks with the HFC power being the highest for the CA condition. It appears that the difficulty of a task does affect active accommodation but to a lesser extent than other factors affecting accommodation.

Dynamic accommodation without feedback does not respond to isolated blur cues

The aim of this study was to determine whether dynamic accommodation responds to isolated blur cues without feedback, and without changes in the distance of the object. Nine healthy subjects aged 21-40years were recruited. Four different aberration patterns were used as stimuli to induce blur with (1) the eye's natural, uncorrected, optical aberrations, (2) all aberrations corrected, (3) spherical aberration only, or (4) astigmatism only. The stimulus was a video animation based on computer-generated images of a monochromatic Maltese cross. Each individual video was generated for each subject off-line, after measuring individual aberrations at different accommodation levels. The video simulated sinusoidal changes in defocus at 0.2Hz. Dynamic images were observed through a 0.8mm pinhole placed at a plane conjugated with the eye's pupil, thus effectively removing potential feedback stemming from accommodation changes. Accommodation responses were measured with a Hartmann-Shack aberrometer for the four different aberration patterns. The results showed that seven out of nine subjects did not respond to any stimuli, whereas the response of the other two subjects was erratic and they seemed to be searching rather than following the stimulus. A significant reduction in average accommodative gain (from 0.52 to 0.11) was obtained when the dioptric demand cue was removed. No statistically significant differences were found among the experimental conditions used. We conclude that aberration related blur does not drive the accommodation response in the absence of feedback from accommodation.

Effect of even and odd-order aberrations on the accommodation response

AIM

To investigate the potential effect that odd and even-order monochromatic aberrations may have on the accommodation response of the human eye.

METHODS

Eight healthy subjects with astigmatism below 1 D, best corrected visual acuity 20/20 or better and normal findings in an ophthalmic examination were enrolled. An adaptive optics system was used in order to measure the accommodation response of the subjects' eyes under different conditions: with the natural aberrations being present, and with the odd and even-order aberrations being corrected. Three measurements of accommodation response were monocularly acquired at accommodation demands ranging from 0 to 4 D (0.5 D step).

RESULTS

The accommodative lag was greater for the accommodative demands of 1.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 D for the condition in which the even-order aberrations were corrected, in comparison to that obtained for the natural aberrations and corrected odd-order aberrations for the same accommodation demands. No statistically significant differences were found between the accommodation responses under the three conditions.

CONCLUSION

The odd and even-order aberrations are not helping the visual system to accommodate, because their partial correction do not affect the accommodation performance.

Potential role for microfluctuations as a temporal directional cue to accommodation

The goal was to revisit an important, yet unproven notion that accommodative microfluctuations facilitate the determination of direction (sign) of abrupt focus changes in the stimulus to accommodation. We contaminated the potential temporal cues from natural accommodative microfluctuations by presenting uncorrelated external (screen) temporal defocus noise that combined with the retinal image effects of natural microfluctuations. A polychromatic Maltese spoke pattern thus either modulated defocus at a combination of two temporal frequencies (on-screen noise condition) or was static (control condition). The on-screen conditions were combined with step changes in optical vergence that were randomized in direction and magnitude. Five subjects monocularly viewed stimuli through a Badal optical system in a Maxwellian view. An artificial 4-mm aperture was imaged at the entrance pupil of the eye. Wavefront aberrations were measured dynamically at 50 Hz using a custom Shack–Hartmann aberrometer. Dynamic changes in the Zernike defocus term with step changes in optical vergence were analyzed. We calculated the percentage of correct directional responses for 1, 2, and 3 D accommodative and disaccommodative step stimuli using preset criteria for latency, velocity, and persistence of the response. The on-screen noise condition reduced the percent-correct responses compared to the static stimulus, suggesting that this manipulation affected the detectability of the sign of the accommodative stimulus. Several possible reasons and implications of this result are discussed.
