Endoscopic Resection of Nasal Septal Chondroma

Chondromas are benign cartilaginous tumors and rarely develop in the nasal septum. Although it causes different symptoms depending on the location and size of the tumor, the most common complaints are nasal obstruction and epistaxis. A submucosal mass narrowing the nasal passage can be seen in the septum by an endoscope. Computed tomography gives information about the localization and size of the mass. A definitive diagnosis is made by histopathologic examination. Treatment is surgical excision. Endoscopic surgery provides a less invasive and successful treatment. This case series aims to share that 2 cases with a diagnosis of nasal septal chondroma were successfully treated with endoscopic surgery.

CT and MR imaging findings of head and neck chondrosarcoma

OBJECTIVES

This study investigated the imaging features of head and neck chondrosarcoma (HNCS) according to its origin and pathologic subtype.

METHODS

Patients who were pathologically diagnosed with HNCS between January 2000 and April 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Lesions were classified based on their origin and pathologic subtype. The size and margin were evaluated on the image. Internal calcification and the effects on adjacent bone were assessed using computed tomography (CT) images, while signal intensity and contrast enhancement patterns were analyzed using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.

RESULTS

Thirteen HNCSs were included in this study: 8 bone tumors (61.5%) and 5 soft tissue tumors (38.5%). The bone tumors were pathologically diagnosed as conventional (n = 5) and mesenchymal type (n = 3). Soft tissue tumors were defined as myxoid type. The main symptoms were swelling (90.9%) and pain (72.7%). The lesions measured 4.5 cm on average. The margins showed benign and well-defined except for the mesenchymal type. On CT, most bone tumors (75%) showed internal calcification with remodeling or destruction of the adjacent bone. No soft tissue tumors, except one case, showed internal calcification or destruction of the adjacent bone. MR imaging features were non-specific (T2 high signal intensity and contrast enhancement).

CONCLUSIONS

HCNS showed various imaging findings according to their origin and pathologic subtype. HNCS should be differentiated if a bone tumor shows internal calcification and affects the adjacent bone. When diagnosing slow-growing soft tissue tumors, even if low possibility, HNCS should be considered.

Sino-nasal low-grade chondrosarcoma revealed by isolated bilateral loss of sight: an unprecedented presentation of a rare tumour

Chondrosarcomas are malignant cartilage-forming tumors representing less than 0.1% of all head and neck malignancies, and nasal cavity is an exceptional location among them. Clinical presentation could be consisting of either rhinological signs or asymptomatic endonasal mass. None of the previous reports mentioned ophthalmological symptoms at the forefront of the initial presentation. We report a case of sino-nasal low-grade chondrosarcoma in a patient who presented initially with isolated bilateral subtotal blindness, managed by endoscopic resection and adjuvant radiotherapy.

Extensive Chondrosarcoma of the Nasal Septum: Endoscopic Resection and Long-Term Follow-Up

Chondrosarcoma of the nasal septum is extremely rare slow growing malignant tumor of nonepithelial origin. Preoperative differentiation between low-grade chondrosarcoma and benign cartilaginous tumors such as chondroma may be difficult. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Radiotherapy is reserved for residual or recurrent patients. Recent advance in endoscopic sinus surgery has allowed successful, noninvasive excision of many sinonasal tumors with low morbidity.The authors herein report, what we believe, the most extensive case of posterior nasal septal chondrosarcoma with the longest follow-up period that was completely excised endoscopically with no evidence of local or systemic recurrence after 5 years. The authors also discuss its relevant clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management.

Right atrial tumor embolism from thoracic chondrosarcoma: A case report

Chondrosarcoma accounts for ~15% of all primary malignant bone tumors. Chondrosarcoma of the spine is rare, while intra-atrial tumor embolisms as a result of chondrosarcoma are extremely rare. In the present study, the case of a 70-year-old male with thoracic chondrosarcoma, who presented with a fever and exertional dyspnea, is reported. Following anti-infection treatment with cefoperazone sodium and sulbactam sodium, the patient developed shock and a mass was identified in the right atrium by echocardiogram. The patient subsequently developed acute circular breathing failure and succumbed to the disease. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of thoracic chondrosarcoma with a tumor embolism in the right atrium to be reported in the literature.

Chondrosarcoma of the nasal cavity in a patient with Maffucci syndrome: case report and review of the literature

INTRODUCTION

Maffucci syndrome is a rare, congenital, non-hereditary mesodermal dysplasia, manifested by multiple enchondromas and hemangiomas. Malignant transformation of these lesions is seen in up to 40% of the cases.

CASE REPORT

We present a case of a patient with Maffucci syndrome and an associated chondrosarcoma of the nose. Treatment consisted of surgical resection. Because of the low grade of the tumor, additional treatment, such as radiotherapy, was not necessary.

CONCLUSION

Maffucci syndrome is an exceedingly rare mesodermal dysplasia. Its manifestation in the head and neck region is even less common. Malignant transformation of the associated enchondromas is common, and should be considered whenever a change of the clinical course occurs. Random, periodically performed X-ray examinations give little additional information on malignant transformation and are considered useless.
