Abstract
Theileria spp. are a group of hemoprotozoal parasites pose a significant threat to small ruminants in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Because of that and due to the limited data on the genetic diversity of Theileria species in Erbil Governorate, northern Iraq, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Theileria spp. in sheep and goats using both Giemsa-stained blood smears and PCR methods as a diagnostic criterion. The overall infection rate detected by blood smears was 26.2% in sheep and 18.3% in goats, while PCR showed higher infection rates, 47.7% in sheep and 38.3% in goats. PCR analysis identified various Theileria species, including T. ovis, T. lestoquardi, T. uilenbergi, and T. annulata, each displaying different prevalence rates. Significantly, T. lestoquardi had the highest rate of single infections, especially in goats, with an infection rate of 34.8%. Mixed infections were prevalent, occurring in 22.6% of sheep and 26.1% of goats, primarily involving T. ovis and T. lestoquardi. An assessment of factors influencing infection rates revealed that tick infestation and irregular use of acaricides were significant risk factors. Sheep with tick infestations exhibited a 59% infection rate, while goats had an infection rate of 44.25%. Regular use of acaricides was associated with a reduction in prevalence in both species. Additionally, animals with a history of tick infestations and those in communal grazing systems demonstrated higher infection rates. The sequence analysis of isolates from sheep and goats, based on the 18S rRNA gene, identified several species. The identified species have been deposited in the NCBI with the following accession numbers: T. ovis (PQ325696, PQ325698), T. lestoquardi (PQ325701, PQ325702), T. uilenbergi (PQ325706, PQ325707), and T. annulata (PQ325699, PQ325700). The findings from this investigation offer valuable insights into the genetic diversity and epidemiology of Theileria species in sheep and goats. It can be concluded that periodically controlling vector ticks and arthropods is an important factor in controlling and reducing the spread of theileriosis in targeted domestic animals.

Abstract
Species of the family Prosthogonimidae are considered the most pathogenic trematodes of poultry and wild birds worldwide, causing heavy economic losses in many countries. Prosthogonimosis was a common parasitic disease of Grus japonensis (Müller, 1776) which caused inflammation of the cloaca and bursa of Fabricius and even death. Morphological identifications of Prosthogonimus species are easily confusing; therefore, molecular characterization is used for discrimination. The present study was conducted to identify Prosthogonimus species at Zhalong National Nature Reserve, northeast of China. Considering the morphological variability and wide host range of individual Prosthogonimus species, a combination of both morphological and molecular analyses is indispensable for the valid identification of this parasite and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was amplified for the sequence analysis and phylogenetic analysis. The results of molecular analysis together with phylogenetic reconstruction indicated that the Prosthogonimus pellucidus (von Linstow, 1873) in this study form a single cluster with P. pellucidus, revealing potentially high diversity within the genus Prosthogonimus. Classification of Prosthogonimus species seems to be unrelated to the host and may be related to geographical location. These data provide a significant resource of molecular markers for studying the taxonomy, population genetics, and systematics of Prosthogonimidae.

Abstract
This study investigates the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic characteristics of two prominent blood-borne pathogens, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and Plasmodium spp., in common quails (Coturnix coturnix) sampled from both wild (N = 236) and farmed (N = 197) populations across four districts (Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Lahore, and Multan) in Punjab, Pakistan, during the hunting seasons from 2021 to 2023. Additionally, the impact of these pathogens on the complete blood count (CBC) of the hosts is examined. Out of 433 quails tested, 25 (5.8%) exhibited amplification of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) gene for T. gondii, while 15 (3.5%) showed amplification of the Cytochrome b gene for Plasmodium spp. A risk factor analysis indicated that the prevalence of both pathogens was not confined to specific sampling sites or bird sexes (P > 0.05). District-wise analysis highlighted that hens were more susceptible to both T. gondii and Plasmodium spp. infections than cocks. Wild quails exhibited a higher susceptibility to T. gondii compared to farmed birds. Significant CBC variations were recorded in infected birds as compared to uninfected ones. BLAST analysis of generated sequences has confirmed the identity of recovered PCR amplicons as T. gondii and Plasmodium relictum. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Pakistani isolates clustered with those reported from various countries globally. This study provides the first documentation of T. gondii and Plasmodium sp. infections in Pakistani quails, underscoring the need for detailed investigations across different regions to enhance our understanding of infection rates and the zoonotic potential of these parasites.

Abstract
Introduction Haemosporidian parasites are prevalent worldwide and can cause economic losses in poultry production. These parasites are arousing interest in Thailand and are found in many avian species. There is insufficient information on the genetic diversity of these alveolates from the largest families - Plasmodidae, Haemoprotidae and Leucocytozoidae - specifically parasitising ducks, turkeys, and geese. Material and Methods Blood samples from 116 backyard poultry (60 ducks, 36 turkeys and 20 geese) in northeastern Thailand were investigated for Plasmodium spp., Haemoproteus spp. and Leucocytozoon spp. infections using microscopic examination and molecular approaches. Results A total of 37/116 birds (31.9%) had confirmed Plasmodium infections. The prevalence was 69.4% (25/36) in turkeys, 18.3% (11/60) in ducks, and 5.0% (1/20) in geese. Of these 37 positives, 86.5% were Plasmodium sp., 10.8% were P. gallinaceum and 2.7% were P. juxtanucleare. Sequence analysis based on the cytochrome b gene identified seven lineages, of which two were new lineages in backyard poultry. Conclusion This is the first report on the prevalence of haemosporidian parasites in backyard poultry in northeastern Thailand. The results provide important data for better understanding the molecular epidemiology of haemosporidian parasites infection in poultry in this region, which will be helpful in controlling these blood parasites.

Abstract
Prosthogonimiasis poses a threat to the reproductive system of poultry and wild birds, which are the definitive hosts of the parasite causing this disease. However, the parasite infection of the second intermediate host (dragonfly), the primary vector of this pathogen, is rarely reported. In this study, the prevalence of Prosthogonimus infection in dragonflies was investigated from June 2019 to October 2022 in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. The species of metacercariae isolated from dragonfly were identified by morphological characteristics, molecular biology techniques, and animal infection experiments. The results showed that 11 species of dragonflies and one damselfly were identified and among six of the dragonflies infected by Prosthogonimus metacercariae, Sympetrum depressiusculum (28.53%) had the highest infection rate among all positive dragonflies, followed by Sympetrum vulgatum (27.86%) and Sympetrum frequens (20.99%), which are preferred hosts, and the total prevalence was 20.39% (2061/10,110) in Heilongjiang Province. Three species of Prosthogoniumus metacercariae were isolated, including Prosthogonimus cuneatus, Prosthogonimus pullucidus, and Prosthogonimus sp., among which P. cuneatus was the dominant species in dragonflies in Heilongjiang Province. This is the first report on the prevalence of Prosthogonimus in dragonflies in China, which provides baseline data for the control of prosthogonimiasis in Heilongjiang Province and a reference for the prevention of prosthogonimiasis in other areas of China.

Morphological and molecular characterization of Prosthogonimus falconis n. sp. Abstract
At a routine health check of a female peregrine falcon, 23 trematodes preliminary identified as Prosthogonimus sp. were removed from the bursa of Fabricius. Based on morphological and molecular examination, a new species, Prosthogonimus falconis, was described. The pear-shaped flukes were 4.3-6.9 mm long, with greatest width posterior to testes. Tegumental spines measuring between 17 and 21 μm long covered the whole body. Length and width ratio of oral to ventral suckers were 1:1.3. Extracaecal, multifollicular vitelline glands commenced prior to acetabulum and terminated posterior to testes. Eggs in the distal uterus measured 21 × 12 μm. Molecular analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 gene regions revealed that the new species described here is phylogenetically closest to Prosthogonimus cuneatus and Prosthogonimus pellucidus clusters.
