Risk of gastric cancer and peptic ulcers in relation to ABO blood type: a cohort study

Gastric Cancer Survivorship: Multidisciplinary Management, Best Practices and Opportunities

PURPOSE

Gastric cancer is the 5th most common malignancy worldwide. As early detection increases and treatments for gastric cancer improve, the number of gastric cancer survivors grows.

METHODS

Here, we review the diagnosis and management of gastric cancer and discuss important considerations for gastric cancer survivorship including cancer surveillance, weight loss, malnutrition, fatigue, specific complications related to surgery and radiation, quality of life in gastric cancer survivorship, health behavior, and models of survivorship.

RESULTS

Multimodality therapy with chemotherapy and surgery can result in chronic toxicities in multiple organ systems. This emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary survivorship care model including cancer surveillance, management of chronic toxicities, and optimization of modifiable risk factors with long-term involvement of appropriate providers.

CONCLUSION

Adequately caring for gastric cancer survivors requires a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.

ABO, Lewis blood group systems and secretory status with H.pylori infection in yemeni dyspeptic patients: a cross- sectional study

BACKGROUND

The ABO and Lewis blood group antigens are potential factors in susceptibility to H. pylori infection. This research aimed to examine the prevalence of Helicobater pylori (H.pylori) infection and its association with ABO, Lewis blood group systems, and secretory status in Yemeni symptomatic patients.

METHODS

In a cross-sectional study, 103 patients referred for endoscopy due to dyspepsia were included. H pylori infection was assessed using stool antigen and serum antibody rapid tests. ABO and Lewis blood group systems were examined using hemagglutination assay. Saliva samples were investigated for identification of the secretory phenotype using hemagglutination inhibition test.

RESULTS

The prevalence of H. pylori infection was (80.6%), with a higher rate of infection in females than males. The ABO blood groups were found to be significantly different between males and females (p = 0.047). The O blood group was prevalent among H. pylori patients, especially secretors. There was a significant association between ABO blood groups and H. pylori infection (p = 0.001). The Le (a + b+) phenotype was the most common, followed by Le (a + b-), Le (a-b+), and Le (a-b-). Lewis blood group systems and secretory status of symptomatic patients were not associated with H. pylori infection. The results showed that serum Ab test for H. pylori achieved poor sensitivity (68%), specificity of 55%; positive predictive value (PPV) 86%, negative predictive value (NPV) 29% and accuracy 65.1%.

CONCLUSION

The prevalence of H. pylori infection was high in Yemeni patients. This infection was linked to the O and Le (a + b+) secretor phenotype. The H. pylori stool Ag test is the most reliable noninvasive diagnostic method for detecting H. pylori infection.

Association between ABO blood groups and mortality in upper gastrointestinal bleeding

OBJECTIVE

Gastrointestinal bleeding is an important part of gastrointestinal emergencies. This study aimed to examine the association between ABO blood groups and mortality in patients who were admitted to the emergency department and diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

METHODS

The patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Turkey and the data of healthy blood donors were studied. The data of these patients were analyzed, and it was determined that the primary outcome was in-hospital mortality.

RESULTS

The study was completed with 274 patients and 274 control group. The mean age of these patients was 65.1±18.2 years, and 64.2% of patients were males. It was found that the in-hospital mortality rate of patients with O blood group (16.2%) was statistically significantly higher than non-O blood group (7.5%) (p:0.032).

CONCLUSION

The study concluded that the mortality rate of gastrointestinal bleeding patients with O blood group was higher compared to patients with other blood groups. Physicians can use ABO blood groups to predict mortality risk in gastrointestinal bleeding.

Prognostic Relationship Between the ABO Blood Groups and Metastatic Gastric Cancer

AIM

 Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive system and has a poor prognosis. Since recurrence and distant metastasis are common in gastric cancer, it is important to use practical and reliable prognostic parameters. In this study, the prognostic relationship between the ABO blood groups and metastatic gastric cancer was investigated.

METHOD AND MATERIAL

 Data were collected by retrospectively scanning the files of 225 patients who were followed up with the diagnosis of metastatic gastric cancer in 2010-2022. The patients' demographic data (age, gender), tumor histopathology, tumor location, and ABO and Rh blood groups were evaluated.

RESULTS

 Of the patients, 138 (61.3%) were male and 87 (38.7%) were female. According to the distribution of the ABO system, blood group A was present in 109 (48.4%) patients, B in 33 (14.7%), AB in 20 (8.9%), and O in 63 (28%). Signet ring cell carcinoma, antrum tumor localization, and distant metastasis were more common in blood groups A and O. According to both the univariate and multivariate analyses, overall survival (OS) was statistically worse in patients with signet ring cell carcinoma and peritoneal metastasis (p < 0.05). The OS rate was the worst in blood group A and best in blood groups AB and B.

CONCLUSION

 In this study, blood group A presented as both a risk factor and a poor prognostic factor in the development of metastatic gastric cancer. In addition, signet ring cell histopathology and presence of metastasis were found to be more common in patients with blood group A and associated with a poor prognosis. Blood groups are inexpensive, easily available, and reliable parameters that can provide an idea about both prognosis and survival in gastric cancer. Therefore, they can serve as a guide for clinicians in the follow-up and evaluation of the prognosis of these patients.

ABO blood group antigens and differential glycan expression: Perspective on the evolution of common human enzyme deficiencies

Enzymes catalyze biochemical reactions and play critical roles in human health and disease. Enzyme variants and deficiencies can lead to variable expression of glycans, which can affect physiology, influence predilection for disease, and/or directly contribute to disease pathogenesis. Although certain well-characterized enzyme deficiencies result in overt disease, some of the most common enzyme deficiencies in humans form the basis of blood groups. These carbohydrate blood groups impact fundamental areas of clinical medicine, including the risk of infection and severity of infectious disease, bleeding risk, transfusion medicine, and tissue/organ transplantation. In this review, we examine the enzymes responsible for carbohydrate-based blood group antigen biosynthesis and their expression within the human population. We also consider the evolutionary selective pressures, e.g. malaria, that may account for the variation in carbohydrate structures and the implications of this biology for human disease.

Distributions and prognostic effects of ABO/Rh blood groups in patients with HER2/neu positive gastric and gastroesophageal junction cancer

BACKGROUND

The aim of study was to look at ABO/Rh blood types frequency and prognostic significance in patients with HER2/neu positive gastric cancer.

METHODS

The study was designed retrospectively. Clinicopathological characteristics, treatment approaches, and the ABO/Rh blood groups features were noted. The ABO/Rh blood types for patients and healthy donors were compared by the Chi-square method.

RESULTS

The average age was 61 years. The average survival time was 17.9 months (13.2-22.5). ABO blood types frequencies were not similar between patients (25.9% O, 6.3% AB, 57.1% A, and 10.7% B) and control group (34.9% O, 7.9% AB, 41.9% A, and 15.3% B) (P = 0.01). Patients and controls had the same Rh factor distribution (P = 0.07).

CONCLUSIONS

We showed that A blood group frequency was increased in patients with HER2/neu receptor-positive gastric cancer than in a healthy population. Also, we detected that the frequency of O blood type was decreased. ABO/Rh blood types were not linked with prognosis for overall survival.

A Comprehensive Prognostic Analysis of Tumor-Related Blood Group Antigens in Pan-Cancers Suggests That SEMA7A as a Novel Biomarker in Kidney Renal Clear Cell Carcinoma

Blood group antigen is a class of heritable antigenic substances present on the erythrocyte membrane. However, the role of blood group antigens in cancer prognosis is still largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the expression of 33 blood group antigen genes and their association with the prognosis of 30 types of cancers in 31,870 tumor tissue samples. Our results revealed that blood group antigens are abnormally expressed in a variety of cancers. The high expression of these antigen genes was mainly related to the activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) pathway. High expression of seven antigen genes, i.e., FUT7, AQP1, P1, C4A, AQP3, KEL and DARC, were significantly associated with good OS (Overall Survival) in six types of cancers, while ten genes, i.e., AQP1, P1, C4A, AQP3, BSG, CD44, CD151, LU, FUT2, and SEMA7A, were associated with poor OS in three types of cancers. Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) is associated with the largest number (14 genes) of prognostic antigen genes, i.e., CD44, CD151, SEMA7A, FUT7, CR1, AQP1, GYPA, FUT3, FUT6, FUT1, SLC14A1, ERMAP, C4A, and B3GALT3. High expression of SEMA7A gene was significantly correlated with a poor prognosis of KIRC in this analysis but has not been reported previously. SEMA7A might be a putative biomarker for poor prognosis in KIRC. In conclusion, our analysis indicates that blood group antigens may play functional important roles in tumorigenesis, progression, and especially prognosis. These results provide data to support prognostic marker development and future clinical management.

The Clinical Utility of ABO and RHD Systems as Potential Indicators of Health Status, a Preliminary Study in Greek Population

Objective: The objective of this study is to further highlight the differences between different ABO blood groups and Rhesus types with health biomarkers. Methods: In total 150 active healthy blood donors participated in our study comprising of 80 males from 19–61 years and 70 females aged from 21 to 64. Participants carrying blood group A were 55 individuals, blood group B 32, blood group O 51, and blood group AB 12, RHD+ 132, and RHD- 18. All the volunteer regular blood donors were selected recognizing them as a healthy population excluding drug and supplements intake. Their blood samples were analyzed just before blood donation for biochemical, hematological, and antioxidant markers. Statistical computations were performed using the SPSS tool, specifically, the one-way ANOVA test, Chi-square statistics, and logistic regression were used as statistical models. Results: O blood donors presented better iron absorption and the worst lipid profile. Indeed, a significant trend of high atheromatic index values revealed an increased risk for hyperlipidemia, in contrast with blood group A presenting a better lipid profile with lower atheromatic index values. There was also a gender related association for blood group A compared with O that was further highlighted using binary logistic regression. Conclusion: In this study, a significant difference was observed among the ABO blood groups in several of the examined biochemical and hematological biomarkers. O blood group appeared different behavior in comparison to all the tested blood groups and furthermore the RHD-group presented a better lipid profile in comparison to the RHD+ group. In order to obtain a more comprehensive view of the correlation between the ABO blood group and biochemical markers, further studies are required.

Environmental and genetic risk factors for gastric cancer

Gastric cancer is a heterogeneous and prevalent disease. The traditional environmental exposures associated with an elevated risk of gastric cancer are less prevalent in the United States today. Genetic risks and risks associated with inflammation remain. Most cases are sporadic and familial clustering is observed in about 10% of the cases. Hereditary gastric cancer accounts for a very low percentage of cases. Here we review the genetic and environmental risk factors associated with the disease.

The Intriguing Connections between von Willebrand Factor, ADAMTS13 and Cancer

von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a complex and large protein that is cleaved by ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13), and together they serve important roles in normal hemostasis. Malignancy can result in both a deficiency or excess of VWF, leading to aberrant hemostasis with either increased bleeding or thrombotic complications, as respectively seen with acquired von Willebrand syndrome and cancer-associated venous thromboembolism. There is emerging evidence to suggest VWF also plays a role in inflammation, angiogenesis and tumor biology, and it is likely that VWF promotes tumor metastasis. High VWF levels have been documented in a number of malignancies and in some cases correlate with more advanced disease and poor prognosis. Tumor cells can induce endothelial cells to release VWF and certain tumor cells have the capacity for de novo expression of VWF, leading to a proinflammatory microenvironment that is likely conducive to tumor progression, metastasis and micro-thrombosis. VWF can facilitate tumor cell adhesion to endothelial cells and aids with the recruitment of platelets into the tumor microenvironment, where tumor/platelet aggregates are able to form and facilitate hematogenous spread of cancer. As ADAMTS13 moderates VWF level and activity, it too is potentially involved in the pathophysiology of these events. VWF and ADAMTS13 have been explored as tumor biomarkers for the detection and prognostication of certain malignancies; however, the results are underdeveloped and so currently not utilized for clinical use. Further studies addressing the basic science mechanisms and real word epidemiology are required to better appreciate the intriguing connections between VWF, ADAMTS13 and malignancy. A better understanding of the role VWF and ADAMTS13 play in the promotion and inhibition of cancer and its metastasis will help direct further translational studies to aid with the development of novel cancer prognostic tools and treatment modalities.

ABO blood group and skin cancers

Beside the role of ABO group in immunohaematology, there is accumulating evidence that the ABO blood group also plays a key role in various human disorders. The interest in blood groups and their association with disease stems from the awareness that blood group antigens are incredibly important components in the process of cell maturation and control. Studies have indicated a link between cancer and the ABO blood group. The appearance or disappearance of blood type antigens is now considered a hallmark of malignancy in many common cancers. Several tumour markers are in fact known blood group antigens. The aim of this review is to describe the history and possible functions of the ABO group and then summarize the association between blood groups and skin cancers.

Risk Prediction for Gastric Cancer Using GWAS-Identifie Polymorphisms, Helicobacter pylori Infection and Lifestyle-Related Risk Factors in a Japanese Population

Simple Summary

Gastric cancer remains the major cancer in Japan and worldwide. It is expected that practical intervention strategies for prevention, such as personalized approaches based on genetic risk models, will be developed. Here, we developed and validated a risk prediction model for gastric cancer using genetic, biological, and lifestyle-related risk factors. Results showed that the combination of selected GWAS-identified SNP polymorphisms and other predictors provided high discriminatory accuracy and good calibration in both the derivation and validation studies; however, the contribution of genetic factors to risk prediction was limited. The greatest contributor to risk prediction was ABCD classification (Helicobacter pylori infection-related factor).

Abstract

Background: As part of our efforts to develop practical intervention applications for cancer prevention, we investigated a risk prediction model for gastric cancer based on genetic, biological, and lifestyle-related risk factors. Methods: We conducted two independent age- and sex-matched case–control studies, the first for model derivation (696 cases and 1392 controls) and the second (795 and 795) for external validation. Using the derivation study data, we developed a prediction model by fitting a conditional logistic regression model using the predictors age, ABCD classification defined by H. pylori infection and gastric atrophy, smoking, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable intake, and 3 GWAS-identified polymorphisms. Performance was assessed with regard to discrimination (area under the curve (AUC)) and calibration (calibration plots and Hosmer–Lemeshow test). Results: A combination of selected GWAS-identified polymorphisms and the other predictors provided high discriminatory accuracy and good calibration in both the derivation and validation studies, with AUCs of 0.77 (95% confidence intervals: 0.75–0.79) and 0.78 (0.77–0.81), respectively. The calibration plots of both studies stayed close to the ideal calibration line. In the validation study, the environmental model (nongenetic model) was significantly more discriminative than the inclusive model, with an AUC value of 0.80 (0.77–0.82). Conclusion: The contribution of genetic factors to risk prediction was limited, and the ABCD classification (H. pylori infection-related factor) contributes most to risk prediction of gastric cancer.

A cross-population atlas of genetic associations for 220 human phenotypes

Current genome-wide association studies do not yet capture sufficient diversity in populations and scope of phenotypes. To expand an atlas of genetic associations in non-European populations, we conducted 220 deep-phenotype genome-wide association studies (diseases, biomarkers and medication usage) in BioBank Japan (n = 179,000), by incorporating past medical history and text-mining of electronic medical records. Meta-analyses with the UK Biobank and FinnGen (n_total = 628,000) identified ~5,000 new loci, which improved the resolution of the genomic map of human traits. This atlas elucidated the landscape of pleiotropy as represented by the major histocompatibility complex locus, where we conducted HLA fine-mapping. Finally, we performed statistical decomposition of matrices of phenome-wide summary statistics, and identified latent genetic components, which pinpointed responsible variants and biological mechanisms underlying current disease classifications across populations. The decomposed components enabled genetically informed subtyping of similar diseases (for example, allergic diseases). Our study suggests a potential avenue for hypothesis-free re-investigation of human diseases through genetics.

Are People With Blood Group O More Susceptible to Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and Have Worse Survival Rates? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common malignant tumour in Southeast Asia, especially in southern China. ABO blood groups have been proven to play an important role in many cancers. However, it is still controversial whether the ABO blood group has a definite relationship to susceptibility to NPC and the prognosis of NPC patients. This meta-analysis was performed to elucidate the correlation between ABO blood group and NPC to provide more data for clinical practice.

Methods

A systematic search was performed of the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, Web of Science, EMBASE, and PubMed databases up to December 31, 2020. Stata 11.0 statistical software was used for this meta-analysis.

Results

According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 6 studies including 6938 patients with NPC were selected. Blood group O was relevant to Chinese NPC patients, and patients with blood group O had a significantly lower incidence of NPC, while blood group A had no correlation with susceptibility to NPC. There was no difference in the 3-year overall survival (OS), locoregional relapse-free survival (LRRFS) or distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) rates between patients with blood group O and those with non-O blood groups; worse 5-year OS, LRRFS and DMFS rates were found in patients with blood group O, whereas blood group A was not related to prognosis.

Conclusion

Blood group O in Chinese patients with NPC seems to be a protective factor for morbidity. However, once patients with blood group O are diagnosed with NPC, this blood group often indicates unfavourable OS, LRRFS and DMFS rates. It is recommended that more attention should be paid to the influence of blood group factor on patients in the treatment of NPC.

Association of blood groups with hepatitis C viremia

Hepatitis C virus remained a public health problem with approximately half of the patients untreated and undiagnosed. Chronic HCV is a leading cause of cirrhosis, fibrosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and other hepatic morbidities. Active HCV has a prevalence rate of about 1% (71 million). By July, 2019, 10 million population of Pakistan was declared to have active HCV infection. According to World Health Organization, 23,720 people died of hepatitis-related complexities in Pakistan in 2016. Individuals with certain types of ABO blood groups were more susceptible to diverse kinds of infections. For instance, blood types A and AB predisposed individuals to severe malaria, while type O conferred resistance to the many of the protozoan agent.

This study was designed to explore the association of hepatitis C viremia to blood groups, Rh factors, age and gender distribution among Pakistani population. Total 246 participants were screened for HCV in Taqwa diagnostics laboratory, Multan and 200 were found positive. They were divided into 4 groups on the basis of their age. First group included patients ranging from 17 to 25 (52), second, third and fourth group included patients from 26 to 34 (92), 35 to 43 (42) and 44 to above (14) respectively. Confirmed Hepatitis C patients were subjected to analysis of blood group, Rh factor and viral load. Results demonstrated that patients having ‘O’ blood group (60.37%) were reported for high viral load than any of the other blood groups in the patients of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. Furthermore, Rh-negative factor (26.42) was associated with high viral load than that of the Rh-positive factor (73.58). Disclosure practiced that age group (26–34) was reported for the high viral load than that of the any other group of this study. Females were more aggressively affected by HCV Viremia than male because the mean viral load among the females was higher than that of the males. Greater social awareness and gender-sensitive healthcare is necessary to improve the experiences of patients with HCV.

The association of ABO blood groups and trauma outcomes: A retrospective analysis of 3779 patients

Background:

There is currently a lack of understanding regarding the link between ABO blood types with outcomes of traumatically injured patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of ABO blood types with outcomes in traumatically injured patients separated by injury type.

Methods:

This retrospective study evaluated trauma patients at an urban, Level 1 trauma center from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2017. Patients were excluded if they were pregnant or <16 years old. Recorded outcomes included: ABO blood group, mortality, Injury Severity Score (ISS), race, injury type, mechanism of injury, and complications. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics including Chi-squared, Kruskal–Wallis, and F-test calculations.

Results:

A total of 3779 patients were included in this study. No significant differences were present in mean age or ISS between blood types. In patients with penetrating injuries, blood type O was associated with a significant increase in mortality (P = 0.017), red blood cell transfusion (P = 0.027), and massive transfusion protocol (MTP) (P = 0.026) compared to non-O blood types. In patients with blunt injuries, blood type AB was associated with a significant increase in mortality rate compared to non-AB blood types (P = 0.03).

Conclusion:

ABO blood type is connected with an underlying process which affects trauma outcomes, including mortality. Blood type O is associated with increased blood transfusion, MTP, and mortality during the initial hospitalization following a traumatic penetrating injury, while blood type AB is associated with increased mortality during the initial hospitalization following a blunt traumatic injury.

ABO genotypes and the risk of esophageal and gastric cancers

Background

Blood type has been associated with the risk of gastric cancer, but few studies have examined the association with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

Methods

We conducted a case-control study using genotyping data of Chinese individuals, including cases of 2022 ESCC, 1189 gastric cardia adenocarcinoma, 1161 gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma, and 2696 controls. Genetic blood type was imputed using three single nucleotide polymorphisms. We used logistic regression to examine the association between blood type and the risk of each cancer.

Results

Compared to blood type O, the risk of ESCC was significantly elevated for blood type B and AB, with the highest risk for type AB (OR, 95%CI: 1.34, 1.07–1.67). Analysis of genotype suggested that the association of ESCC was from carrying the B allele. Similarly, blood type was significantly associated with gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma (P < 0.001) with risk significantly elevated in type A (1.37, 1.14–1.65) and AB (1.44, 1.10–1.89) compared to type O. Blood type was not associated with gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (P = 0.13).

Conclusions

This study provides novel insights into the association between blood type and the risk of ESCC and restricted previously observed association to only gastric noncardia cancer, providing important evidence to clarify the pattern of association and suggesting mechanisms of action.

Determination of Pentraxin-3, Interleukin-8 and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Levels in Patients with Gastric Adenocarcinoma

INTRODUCTION AND AIM

The purpose of this study was to determine the value, in terms of diagnosis, resectability and prognosis of pentraxin-3 (PTX3), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in cases of gastric adenocarcinoma, an important condition both worldwide and in Turkey, and to determine their levels in order to contribute to elucidating the pathogenesis of the disease.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Serum was separated from blood specimens collected from 45 patients diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma and from a 30-member healthy control group. Serum PTX3, IL-8 and VEGF levels were studied by ELISA method.

RESULTS

Serum PTX3 values differed significantly between the patient group and the control group (p <0.05). Serum IL-8 values also differed significantly between the patient group and the control group (p <0.05). A significant difference was also observed between serum VEGF values in the patient group and the control group (p <0.05). Significant correlation was determined between serum PTX3 and VEGF (p <0.01; r=0.833), between serum PTX3 and IL-8 (p <0.01; r=0.818), and between serum VEGF and IL-8 (p <0.01; r=0.803), measurements when the entire study population was evaluated irrespectively of groups.

CONCLUSION

Serum PTX3, IL-8 and VEGF levels decreased in cases of gastric adenocarcinoma compared to the control group, and their levels affected one another.<br />.

An agnostic study of associations between ABO and RhD blood group and phenome-wide disease risk

Background

There are multiple known associations between the ABO and RhD blood groups and disease. No systematic population-based studies elucidating associations between a large number of disease categories and blood group have been conducted.

Methods

Using SCANDAT3-S, a comprehensive nationwide blood donation-transfusion database, we modeled outcomes for 1217 disease categories including 70 million person-years of follow-up, accruing from 5.1 million individuals.

Results

We discovered 49 and 1 associations between a disease and ABO and RhD blood groups, respectively, after adjustment for multiple testing. We identified new associations such as a decreased risk of kidney stones and blood group B as compared to blood group O. We also expanded previous knowledge on other associations such as pregnancy-induced hypertension and blood groups A and AB as compared to blood group O and RhD positive as compared to negative.

Conclusions

Our findings generate strong further support for previously known associations, but also indicate new interesting relations.

Microbiome Dysbiosis and Predominant Bacterial Species as Human Cancer Biomarkers

PURPOSE

To evaluate bacterial agents as cancer biomarkers.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Various bacterial species have been demonstrated to involve in human cancers. However, the data is not enough for better understanding of predominant specific species. Application of a rapid and early-diagnostic, cost-effective, non-invasive, and inclusive method is a crucial approach for obtaining valid results. The role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in gastric and duodenal cancer has been confirmed. From investigation among previous publications, we attempted to make it clear which bacterial species significantly and specifically increase in various cancer types. It was unraveled that there is significant change in Granulicatella adiacens (G. adiacens) in lung cancer (LC), Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) in colorectal cancer (CRC), H. pylori and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) in pancreatic cancer, and Streptococcus spp. in oral cancer.

CONCLUSION

Alteration in the cell cycle by means of different mechanisms such as inflammation, alteration in cell signaling, invasion and immune evasion, specific niche colonization, induction of DNA damage and mutation, expression of some microRNAs, and enhancing epigenetic effects are the most common mechanisms employed by bacterial species.

GWAS of peptic ulcer disease implicates Helicobacter pylori infection, other gastrointestinal disorders and depression

Genetic factors are recognized to contribute to peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and other gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Here, genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses based on 456,327 UK Biobank (UKB) individuals identify 8 independent and significant loci for PUD at, or near, genes MUC1, MUC6, FUT2, PSCA, ABO, CDX2, GAST and CCKBR. There are previously established roles in susceptibility to Helicobacter pylori infection, response to counteract infection-related damage, gastric acid secretion or gastrointestinal motility for these genes. Only two associations have been previously reported for duodenal ulcer, here replicated trans-ancestrally. The results highlight the role of host genetic susceptibility to infection. Post-GWAS analyses for PUD, GORD, IBS and IBD add insights into relationships between these gastrointestinal diseases and their relationships with depression, a commonly comorbid disorder.

Association of ABO and Rh Blood Group Phenotypes with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus at Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Referral Hospital Bahir Dar, Northwest Ethiopia

BACKGROUND

ABO and Rh blood group antigens are thought to be among genetic determinants of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Identification of blood group phenotypes are more associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It will be helpful for individuals who are susceptible blood groups to take care of themselves by avoiding other predisposing factors and taking preventive measures.

METHODS

Hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was carried out from February to April 2019 at Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Referral Hospital. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected with a semistructured pretested questionnaire. ABO and Rh Blood group were determined by slide and test tube methods. Biochemical parameters were determined with Mindray BS-200E fully automated clinical chemistry analyzer. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS version 20 statistical software. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were employed for data analysis. A P value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

From a total of 424 participants included for this study, blood group O was found higher in frequency with 74 (34.9%) and 97 (45.75%) for cases and healthy controls, respectively. ABO blood groups showed significant association with T2DM, a chi-square value of 12.163 and P value of 0.007. However, the Rh blood group was not associated with T2DM. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that blood group B had a higher risk (OR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.33-3.32) and blood group O had decreased risk (OR: 0.636, 95% CI: 0.43-0.94) of T2DM as compared to other blood groups.

CONCLUSION

ABO blood group antigens showed significant association with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Blood group B was associated with an increased risk and O blood group with decreased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Allelic distribution of ABO gene in Chinese centenarians

Objective

Human ABO blood groups are determined by the alleles A, B, and O (O01 and O02) of the ABO gene and have been linked to the risks for cardiovascular diseases and cancers that affect lifespan.

We examined the genetic associations of the ABO gene and blood groups with longevity.

Methods

We inspected the frequencies of the A, B, O, and O02 alleles in a large Chinese centenarian population (n = 2201) and in middle‐aged controls (n = 2330). The single nucleotide polymorphisms were selected as allele A (rs507666), B (rs8176743, rs8176746, and rs8176749), O (rs687289), and O02 (rs688976, rs549446, and rs512770).

Results

Supported by allelic and genotypic association studies, the frequencies of blood types A, B, O, and AB in centenarian versus control participants were not statistically different: 0.2821 versus 0.2781 (χ² = 0.09, P = 0.76), 0.2867 versus 0.3060 (χ² = 2.03, P = 0.15), 0.3380 versus 0.3159 (χ² = 2.52, P = 0.11), and 0.0859 versus 0.0910 (χ² = 0.37, P = 0.54), respectively. Sex had little effect on these distributions.

Conclusion

Integrated with other previous reports, we conclude from this large Chinese cohort that genetic variants of the ABO gene and blood groups are not associated with longevity.

Pathways of Gastric Carcinogenesis, Helicobacter pylori Virulence and Interactions with Antioxidant Systems, Vitamin C and Phytochemicals

Helicobacter pylori is a class one carcinogen which causes chronic atrophic gastritis, gastric intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia and adenocarcinoma. The mechanisms by which H. pylori interacts with other risk and protective factors, particularly vitamin C in gastric carcinogenesis are complex. Gastric carcinogenesis includes metabolic, environmental, epigenetic, genomic, infective, inflammatory and oncogenic pathways. The molecular classification of gastric cancer subtypes has revolutionized the understanding of gastric carcinogenesis. This includes the tumour microenvironment, germline mutations, and the role of Helicobacter pylori bacteria, Epstein Barr virus and epigenetics in somatic mutations. There is evidence that ascorbic acid, phytochemicals and endogenous antioxidant systems can modify the risk of gastric cancer. Gastric juice ascorbate levels depend on dietary intake of ascorbic acid but can also be decreased by H. pylori infection, H. pylori CagA secretion, tobacco smoking, achlorhydria and chronic atrophic gastritis. Ascorbic acid may be protective against gastric cancer by its antioxidant effect in gastric cytoprotection, regenerating active vitamin E and glutathione, inhibiting endogenous N-nitrosation, reducing toxic effects of ingested nitrosodimethylamines and heterocyclic amines, and preventing H. pylori infection. The effectiveness of such cytoprotection is related to H. pylori strain virulence, particularly CagA expression. The role of vitamin C in epigenetic reprogramming in gastric cancer is still evolving. Other factors in conjunction with vitamin C also play a role in gastric carcinogenesis. Eradication of H. pylori may lead to recovery of vitamin C secretion by gastric epithelium and enable regression of premalignant gastric lesions, thereby interrupting the Correa cascade of gastric carcinogenesis.

The Swedish Scandinavian donations and transfusions database (SCANDAT3-S) - 50 years of donor and recipient follow-up

Background

The two previous versions of the Scandinavian donations and transfusions (SCANDAT) databases, encompassing data on blood donors, blood components, transfusions, and transfused patients linked to national health registers in Sweden and Denmark up until 2012, have been used to study donor health, disease transmission, the role of donor characteristics, and more.

Study Design and Methods

Here we describe the creation of the Swedish portion of the third iteration of SCANDAT – SCANDAT3‐S – with follow‐up from 1968 to the end of 2017, resulting in up to 50 years of uninterrupted follow‐up for donors and recipients. The database now also includes non‐transfused non‐donors with a blood typing result, increased temporal resolution for transfusions, and linkages to laboratory and drug prescription data.

Results

After data cleaning, the database contained 23 579 863 donation records, 21 383 317 transfusion records, and 8 071 066 unique persons with valid identification. In total, the database offers 28 638 436 person‐years of follow‐up for donors, 13 582 350 person‐years of follow‐up for transfusion recipients, and 65 613 639 person‐years of follow‐up for non‐recipient non‐donors, with possibility for future extension. Additionally, the database includes 167 820 412 dispense records for prescribed drugs and 316,338,442 laboratory test results. Since the latest update in 2012, >99.9% of all donations were traceable to a donor with valid identification, and >97% of all transfusions to a recipient with valid identification.

Conclusion

With extended follow‐up and more clinical detail, the Swedish portion of the third and latest iteration of the SCANDAT database should allow for more comprehensive analysis of donation and transfusion‐related research questions.

Effect of different blood groups on tympanometric findings and acoustic reflex thresholds

PURPOSE

The blood group can have an effect on the auditory system, and it is suggested that it could be an indicator of noise-induced hearing loss. There could be changes in the immittance findings, too, in adults having different blood groups. The present study attempted to determine if there are any differences in tympanometric results (admittance, peak pressure, gradient, resonance frequency, and ear canal volume) and acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) at 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz between individuals with different blood groups (A positive, B positive, O positive and AB positive).

METHODS

Eighty normal hearing adults between the age of 18 and 27 years were considered for the study. They were divided into 20 participants, each with blood groups A, B, AB, and O. The immittance findings were recorded from all the participants of the study.

RESULTS

The results showed that the resonance frequency was slightly higher in blood group O compared to other blood groups. Also, the acoustic reflex thresholds were slightly elevated at all frequencies (ipsilateral and contralateral) for individuals with blood group O.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of the study suggest possible reduced outer hair cells in persons with blood group O. This could have resulted in elevated acoustic reflex thresholds.

The Clinicopathological Features and Staging at Presentation of Gastric Cancer: A Single-Center Retrospective Study

Introduction Gastric cancer (GC) is the third leading cause of cancer death, with most patients diagnosed at a later stage, with distant metastasis at the time of presentation, contributing to poor prognosis. GC has been associated with nonspecific clinical presentations, which cause a time delay for patients to seek for medical advice. This study aims to identify the clinicopathological features of GC patients and correlate time delay of the diagnosis to the staging of the disease.

Materials and Methods This is a single-center retrospective study of GC patients diagnosed from January 2012 to December 2018. All relevant data of GC patient diagnosed during this time period were extracted from the patients’ case notes.

Results A total of 69 GC patients were included in this study, with male preponderance and mean age of 62 years old. The top three symptoms presented are dyspepsia or ingestion (47.8%), weight loss (43.5%), and nausea or vomiting (33.3%). The mean time delay was 3.7 months. Patients presented with weight loss have a significantly longer average time delay of 4.88 months. Most tumor lesion was found at the distal stomach (43.5%), while 74.5% tested negative for Helicobacter pylori. Most patients were diagnosed at Stage IV (52.6%) and Stage III (36.8%) of the disease, with poorly differentiated (67.7%) histological features which have poor prognosis.

Discussion and Conclusion No evidence of specific symptom or combination of symptoms predicts higher risk of GC. Regardless of the number of symptoms presented or the time delay, most GC patients were diagnosed at later stage of the disease. The study shows the importance of GC screening in Malaysia to ensure early detection, even before a symptom presented.

[General and particular issues of etiopathogenesis of peptic ulcer and gastric cancer: current status of the problem]

The development of peptic ulcer (PU) and gastric cancer (GC) is the result of the interaction of various internal and external factors. Moreover, if the role ofHelicobacter pylori(H. pylori) in the development of diseases of the stomach is fully established, the significance of many other factors continues to be discussed. Serious controversy is caused by the participation of various strains ofH. pyloriin the development of PU and GC. First of all, these are Vac- and Cag-positive strains ofH. pylori. The role of genetic human polymorphism in the development of this pathology is debatable. Especially the interleukin genes and necrotizing tumor factor alpha. The role of environmental factors in the formation of PU and GC is not fully understood. So, the role of alcohol, occupational hazards and drugs in the development of these diseases continues to be discussed. Further study of risk factors for various diseases of the stomach will optimize their prevention and treatment. The review presents a modern view of individual issues in the pathogenesis of PU and GC.

Association of ABO blood groups with allergic diseases: a scoping review

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to map evidence of the association of ABO blood groups with allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis (AR), atopic dermatitis (AD) and asthma.

DESIGN

A scoping review.

DATA SOURCES

PubMed, Scopus, Direct Open Access Journal, Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, ScienceDirect and SpringerLink were searched from October 2017 until May 2018.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES

We selected all types of studies including case-control studies, prospective or retrospective cohort studies, cross-sectional studies and experimental studies, and we included reviews such as literature reviews, systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis and scoping reviews that were published in English and associated the ABO blood group with the three allergic diseases (asthma, AR and AD) in humans of all age groups.

DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS

Two reviewers independently screened the titles and abstracts and assessed the full-text articles of the abstracts that met the eligibility requirements. Data from the included studies were extracted, evaluated and reported in the form of narrative synthesis.

RESULTS

Of the 10 246 retrieved titles, only 14 articles were selected for a scoping review based on the eligibility criteria. The majority of the studies demonstrated a significant association between ABO blood groups and allergic diseases. We found that blood group O is prominent in patients with AR and asthma, while a non-O blood group is common in patients with AD.

CONCLUSION

This scoping review serves as preliminary evidence for the association of ABO blood groups with allergic diseases. Further studies need to be conducted so that the relationship between ABO blood groups and allergic diseases can be fully established. This could be helpful for clinicians and health professionals in consulting and managing patients who suffer from allergic diseases in the future.

ABO Blood Groups, Rh Factor, and Thyroid Cancer Risk: To 'B' or Not to 'B'

Purpose: In this study, we aimed to evaluate ABO blood groups and Rh factor in patients with thyroid cancer.Methods: Demographical and clinical features, cytological results, ABO blood groups, and Rh factor status of patients with benign and malignant thyroid disease were evaluated. Histopathological features of thyroid cancer were compared in Rh positive and negative patients, and patients with different ABO blood groups.Results: Histopathological diagnosis was benign in 1,299 (63.5%) and malignant in 744 (36.5%) patients. There was no significant difference between benign and malignant patients in terms of age, sex, thyroid autoantibody positivity, and ABO blood groups (p > .05 for each). A significantly higher rate of patients with malignant disease were Rh positive compared to patients with benign disease (91.8% vs. 88.1%, p = .046). In thyroid cancer patients, extrathyroidal extension and advanced stage (3-4) were observed more frequently in patients with B compared to non-B blood groups (p = .028 and 0.042, respectively). The likelihood of the extrathyroidal extension was 4.272 (95%: 1.816-10.049) times higher in B blood group compared to non-B blood groups in patients with multifocal disease (p < .001). Patients with O blood group had lower rate of capsular invasion than patients with non-O blood groups (p = .018).Conclusion: Patients with B blood group had higher risk of extrathyroidal extension and advanced stage compared to patients with non-B blood group.

Prognostic value of ABO blood group in a Chinese population in Northwest China region with curatively resected rectal cancer

A positive association between the ABO blood types and survival has been suggested in several malignancies. However, little is known about the relationship between ABO blood group and survival in rectal cancer patients. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the ABO blood types in predicting the prognosis of a Chinese population in Northwest China region with curatively resected rectal cancer. We retrospectively analyzed 1613 consecutive patients who underwent curative surgery for rectal cancer between June, 2011 and December, 2016. The relationship between the ABO blood types and overall survival (OS) was analyzed. The median follow-up period of the 1613 rectal cancer patients was 69.6 months with 1427 alive. There was a significance difference of survival among ABO blood groups (P=0.007). The mean overall survival (OS) of the blood type B patients was 70.8 months, O was 64.3, whereas the mean OS of the AB and A blood type patients was significantly lower, 58.4 months and 59.7 months respectively (P=0.007, log-rank test). Compared with patients with A and AB blood types, patients with blood type B and O were more likely to have better survival(P=0.001). A blood groups were associated with significantly decreased overall survival in rectal cancer patients (hazard ratio = 1.263; 95% confidence interval = 0.776-2.054, P =0.010). In order to confirm our above results, we performed the same investigation in an independent cohort from another hospital of 505 Chinese patients and get the similar results. Our study showed that ABO blood group is associated with survival in Northwest Chinese patients with rectal cancer and the blood type B and O were favourable prognostic factors for patients with rectal cancer.

The association between ABO blood group distribution and peptic ulcer disease: a cross-sectional study from Ethiopia

BACKGROUND

Studies have shown that ABO blood group antigens are associated with peptic ulcer disease (PUD). There are limited sources regarding the association of blood groups with PUD patients in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to assess the association between ABO blood group distribution, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), smoking, alcohol, coffee, and PUD at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was undertaken, and a total of 63 endoscopically confirmed PUD patients and 63 healthy controls were screened for ABO blood grouping using the standard slide agglutination reaction. Stool antigens were checked to determine Helicobacter pylori status of PUD patients. Chi-square and logistic regression were used for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

The ABO blood group distribution of PUD patients was 19.04% (12/63), 19.04% (12/63), 11.11% (7/63), 50.79% (32/63) for blood group A, B, AB, and O, respectively, while among control groups it was 25.39% (16/63), 23.80% (15/63), 12.69% (8/63), and 38.09% (24/63) for blood group A, B, AB, and O, respectively. 34.1% (22/63) of PUD patients had gastric ulcer and 65.9% (41/63) had duodenal ulcer. There was statistically a significant association between sex (p=0.001), use of NSAIDs (p=0.001), smoking cigarette (p=0.014), alcohol consumption (p=0.028), and PUD.

CONCLUSION

Although PUD trended as more prevalent among patients with blood group O than other blood group types their association was not statistically significant.

Coronary Heart Disease and ABO Blood Group in Diabetic Women: A Case-Control Study

Numerous investigations conducted in general population have reported that certain ABO blood group may increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, this association has not been yet well established and even is less clear in diabetic patients. Considering that women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at greater risk to develop CHD and have higher cardiovascular mortality, this study aimed to evaluate the association between CHD and ABO blood group in women with T2DM. A case control study of eight hundred eighty-one (881) diabetic women was enrolled in this study. Among them, two hundred thirty eight (238) patients were identified to have CHD (CHD+) and two hundred eighty two (282) of them were identified without CHD but matched with the first group for other CHD risk factors (CHD-). ABO blood type (A, B, AB, O, and Rhesus factor) for both groups were determined. To compare the magnitude of the correlation between various blood groups with CHD development, odd ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was calculated. Our results demonstrates that the percentage of AB blood group was significantly higher in the diabetic women with concurrent CHD than in those without CHD [30 (12.7%) vs. 13 (4.6%), Odd ratio: 2.9 (95%CI: 1.5-5.7), P = 0.001]. The results of the present study clearly demonstrate that the AB blood group has a higher odd ratio for the development of CHD and can be considered as a risk factor for the development of CHD in females with T2DM. More comprehensive studies are required to confirm these results.

Blood Type as a Predictor of High-Grade Dysplasia and Associated Malignancy in Patients with Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms

BACKGROUND

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are precursor lesions to the development of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. We determined if non-O blood groups are more common in patients with IPMN and if blood group is a risk factor for progression to invasive pancreatic cancer among patients with IPMN.

METHODS

The medical records were reviewed of all patients undergoing resection of an IPMN at Johns Hopkins Hospital from June 1997 to August 2016. Potential risk factors of high-grade dysplasia and associated adenocarcinoma were identified through a multivariate logistic regression model.

RESULTS

Seven hundred and seventy-seven patients underwent surgical resection of an IPMN in which preoperative blood type was known. Sixty-two percent of IPMN patients had non-O blood groups (vs. 57% in two large US reference cohorts, P = 0.002). The association between non-O blood group was significant for patients with IPMN with low- or intermediate-grade dysplasia (P < 0.001), not for those with high-grade dysplasia (P = 0.68). Low- and intermediate-grade IPMNs were more likely to have non-type O blood compared to those with high-grade IPMN and/or associated invasive adenocarcinoma (P = 0.045). Blood type O was an independent predictor of having high-grade dysplasia without associated adenocarcinoma (P = 0.02), but not having associated invasive cancer (P = 0.72). The main risk factor for progression to invasive cancer after surgical resection was IPMN with high-grade dysplasia (P = 0.002).

CONCLUSION

IPMN patients are more likely to have non-O blood groups than controls, but type O blood group carriers had higher odds of having high-grade dysplasia in their IPMN. These results indicate blood group status may have different effects on the risk and progression of IPMNs.

Blood groups A and AB are associated with increased gastric cancer risk: evidence from a large genetic study and systematic review

Background

The association of ABO blood groups with gastric cancer risk was proposed decades ago, but the results have been inconsistent.

Methods

We used two single nucleotide polymorphisms to determine ABO genotype in 4932 gastric cancer cases and 6158 controls of Chinese descent, and evaluated the associations of ABO blood groups and genotypes with risk of gastric cancer using multivariable logistic regression models. We also systematically reviewed published literature and performed a meta-analysis of all relevant studies.

Results

In the case-control study, compared with blood group O, both blood group A and AB were associated with increased gastric cancer risk (for group A, odds ratio (OR) = 1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02–1.24; for group AB, OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02–1.36, respectively). Analyses of ABO genotypes revealed associations of AO and AB with risk of gastric cancer compared with OO genotype. Consistent with the case-control study, meta-analysis of 40 studies including 33,613 cases and 2,431,327 controls demonstrated that blood group A (OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.13–1.25) and AB (OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.03–1.16) were associated with increased risk of gastric cancer.

Conclusions

Our analyses validated the association of blood group A with risk of gastric cancer, and suggested that blood group AB was also associated with gastric cancer risk. Functional investigations are warranted to elucidate the exact mechanism of ABO blood groups in gastric carcinogenesis.

O Blood Type Is Associated with Unfavorable Distant-metastasis-free Survival in Female Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: A Retrospective Study of 2439 Patients from Epidemic Area

Purpose: To identify the association between ABO blood type and the survivals in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.

Patients and methods: We retrospectively analyzed 2439 consecutive non-metastasis nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients between January 2001 and December 2004 at the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. Survival outcomes were compared using Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed by Cox regression model. Chi-square test was performed to compare categorical variables.

Results: In the whole patients, compared with non-O blood type (A, B, and AB) patients, O blood type patients had significantly lower 5-year distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR)= 1.268, 95% CI 1.010-1.592, P=0.041). Moreover, we observed in female patients, O blood type patients had significantly lower 5-year overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS) and DMFS than those with non-O blood type (aHR=1.495, 95% CI 1.032-2.165, P=0.034 for OS; aHR=1.566, 95% CI 1.054-2.328, P=0.026 for DSS; aHR=1.779, 95% CI 1.056-2.998, P=0.030 for DMFS). In male patients, there was no significant difference observed between O blood type patients and non-O blood type patients in any survival endpoints.

Conclusion: O blood type was associated with an unfavorable DMFS in female patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in epidemic area, which might contribute to unfavorable OS and DSS in female patients, even contribute to a lower DMFS in the whole patients. It might be beneficial to predict metastasis so as to guide the treatment in female patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in epidemic area.

ABO Blood Group and Diabetes Mellitus Influence the Risk for Pancreatic Cancer in a Population from China

Background

The mechanism by which diabetes mellitus (DM) impacts the association between ABO blood types and pancreatic cancer is unclear.

Material/Methods

A retrospective case-control study of 264 patients with pancreatic cancer and 423 age- and sex-matched individuals with nonmalignant diseases was performed to assess whether ABO blood group and DM jointly contribute to pancreatic cancer risk.

Results

A multivariate analysis with adjustments for risk factors revealed that blood type, chronic pancreatitis, and DM were significantly associated with increased pancreatic cancer risk. The estimated adjusted odds ratios (AORs with 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) were 2.130 (1.409–3.220) for blood type A, 2.383 (1.313–4.325) for blood type AB, 1.518 (1.012–2.276) for DM, and 10.930 (1.202–99.405) for chronic pancreatitis. Blood type A significantly modified the risk for pancreatic cancer in individuals with DM (AOR, 3.506; 95% CI, 1.659–7.409).

Conclusions

The risk for pancreatic cancer was associated with ABO blood type, DM, and chronic pancreatitis in a Chinese population. The risk was greatest for individuals with blood type A and DM.

Gastric cancer remains one of the most common and deadly cancers worldwide, especially among older males. Based on GLOBOCAN 2018 data, stomach cancer is the 5^th most common neoplasm and the 3^rd most deadly cancer, with an estimated 783,000 deaths in 2018. Gastric cancer incidence and mortality are highly variable by region and highly dependent on diet and Helicobacter pylori infection. While strides in preventing and treating H. pylori infection have decreased the overall incidence of gastric cancer, they have also contributed to an increase in the incidence of cardia gastric cancer, a rare subtype of the neoplasm that has grown 7-fold in the past decades. A better understanding of the etiology and risk factors of the disease can help reach a consensus in approaching H. pylori infection. Dietary modification, smoking cessation, and exercise hold promise in preventing gastric cancer, while genetic testing is enabling earlier diagnosis and thus greater survival.

Different Risk Profiles for the Postsurgical Prognosis of Gastric Cancer Patients with Different Blood Types: The FIESTA Study

Objectives: We here attempted to evaluate the prediction of different “ABO” blood groups for postsurgical gastric cancer-specific mortality by using data from the ongoing Fujian prospective investigation of cancer (FIESTA) study.

Methods: Initially, a total of 3413 patients with gastric cancer were consecutively enrolled between January 2000 and December 2010 to receive radical gastrectomy, and they were followed up until December 2015. Study patients were divided into the “O+” group and the blood type “O-” group.

Results: Of 2781 eligible patients, 1116 (40.1%) were in the “O+” group and 1665 (59.9%) in the “O-” group, with mortality rate of being 45.0% (n = 502) and 45.3% (n = 755), respectively. A 1:1 propensity score match between the “O+” and the “O-” groups was used. After adjustment, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), high total cholesterol and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, had non-overlapping 95% confidence intervals between the “O+” and the “O-” groups and simultaneously had detectable statistical significance in either group only. A forward method in the multivariate-adjusted COX model was employed and there were five shared risk factors between both groups, including diabetes mellitus, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, regional lymph node metastasis, tumor size and TNM stage. Further nomogram plot revealed that presurgical risk factors selected can better predict the risk of early gastric cancer-specific mortality (C-index: 0.737 for the “O-” group and 0.751 for the “O+” group).

Conclusions: Our findings indicated that the prognostic factors differed between postsurgical gastric cancer patients with “O+” and “O-” blood types.

ABO histo-blood group and risk of respiratory atopy in children: a review of published evidence

Besides their fundamental role in transfusion medicine, ABO and other histo-blood group antigens are associated with the pathogenesis of some human diseases such as malignancy and thrombosis. Reports also show a possible relationship with the risk of asthma and other forms of respiratory atopy. This paper aims to critically review the current evidence linking ABO histo-blood group with the risk of respiratory atopy in children and adults. A literature search was conducted with PubMed to gather baseline data about this relationship. The search extended to studies published within the past 45 years. First, the molecular mechanism underpinning the role of ABO antigenic system in human diseases comprises a fascinating relationship with von Willebrand factor and several pro-inflammatory and adhesion molecules. Second, specific blood group types vary with asthma phenotypes; severe asthma is associated with B phenotype, while mild and moderate asthma is associated with O and A phenotypes. Third, O phenotype has been linked to allergic rhinitis but only in males. Furthermore, asthma risk is related to O/Lewis negative/secretor phenotypes, while a significant relationship has also been established with B phenotype but not with A and O phenotypes. However, one study failed to establish a significant relationship with any of the ABO blood group antigens. In conclusion, there is no unanimity on the specific histo-blood groups linked to respiratory atopy risk, although asthma phenotypes are associated with specific blood groups. Despite the prospect that this relationship holds for the use of blood-group typing in evaluating respiratory atopy risk in children, more evidence-based studies are still required for its validation.

Clinical Associations with ABO Blood Group and Rhesus Blood Group Status in Patients with Breast Cancer: A Nationwide Retrospective Study of 3,944 Breast Cancer Patients in Turkey

Background

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between A, B, O, Rhesus (Rh)-positive and Rh-negative blood groups and breast cancer in a nationwide cohort of 3,944 patients in Turkey.

Material/Methods

A retrospective study included 3,944 patients diagnosed with breast cancer between 2004 and 2015 and with known blood type. Clinical and demographic patient data included age, sex, body mass index (BMI), menopausal status. The breast tumor type, size, grade, TNM stage, and the presence of lymph node and distant metastases were noted. Histopathology of the breast tumors had included routine detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and estrogen receptor (ER) levels.

Results

The 3,944 patients with breast cancer were blood group, type A, B, O, and Rh-positive or Rh-negative; the median age was 47.9 years (range, 18.2–89.6 years); 99.5% (3923/3,844) were women, and 0.5% (21/3944) were men. Patients with blood type 0 had a significantly smaller tumor size compared with patients with blood types A or B. There were no significant differences between blood groups and patient age, BMI, menopausal status, tumor histology, ER status, HER2 status, lymph node and distant metastasis. However, there was a significant difference in the prevalence of lobular breast cancer, levels of ER-positive tumor cells, and prevalence of cases with tumor metastases in Rh-positive patients compared with Rh-negative patients.

Conclusions

The findings of this retrospective study showed that the type, grade, stage, and hormonal status of breast cancer showed no significant associations with ABO blood grouping.

Gastric cancer in Alaska Native people: A cancer health disparity

AIM

To evaluate recent trends in gastric cancer incidence, response to treatment, and overall survival among Alaska Native (AN) people.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis of the Alaska Native Medical Center patient database was performed. Patient history, clinical, pathological, response to treatment and patient outcomes were collected from one-hundred and thirty-two AN gastric cancer patients. The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result database 18 was used to collect comparison United States non-Hispanic White (NHW) and AN gastric cancer patient data between 2006-2014.

RESULTS

AN gastric cancer patients have a higher incidence rate, a poorer overall survival, and are diagnosed at a significantly younger age compared to NHW patients. AN patients differ from NHW patients in greater prevalence of non-cardia, diffuse subtype, and signet ring cell carcinomas. AN females were more likely to be diagnosed with later stage cancer, stage IV, compared to AN males. Diminished overall survival was observed among AN patients with increasing stage, O+ blood type, < 15 lymph nodes examined at resection, and no treatment. This study is the first report detailing the clinicopathologic features of gastric cancer in AN people with outcome data.

CONCLUSION

Our findings confirm the importance of early detection, treatment, and surgical resection for optimizing AN patient outcomes. Further research on early detection markers are warranted.

Biological functions of fucose in mammals

Fucose is a 6-deoxy hexose in the l-configuration found in a large variety of different organisms. In mammals, fucose is incorporated into N-glycans, O-glycans and glycolipids by 13 fucosyltransferases, all of which utilize the nucleotide-charged form, GDP-fucose, to modify targets. Three of the fucosyltransferases, FUT8, FUT12/POFUT1 and FUT13/POFUT2, are essential for proper development in mice. Fucose modifications have also been implicated in many other biological functions including immunity and cancer. Congenital mutations of a Golgi apparatus localized GDP-fucose transporter causes leukocyte adhesion deficiency type II, which results in severe developmental and immune deficiencies, highlighting the important role fucose plays in these processes. Additionally, changes in levels of fucosylated proteins have proven as useful tools for determining cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Chemically modified fucose analogs can be used to alter many of these fucose dependent processes or as tools to better understand them. In this review, we summarize the known roles of fucose in mammalian physiology and pathophysiology. Additionally, we discuss recent therapeutic advances for cancer and other diseases that are a direct result of our improved understanding of the role that fucose plays in these systems.

How good is the obesity associated with blood groups in a cohort of female university going students?

Objective:

To find out frequency of obesity in female University students in Faisalabad and to investigate its association with blood groups of ABO system.

Methods:

A cross sectional study was conducted with a sample size of 200 female University students, recruited from the Faisalabad based institutes from May 2017 to July 2017. Relevant information was taken by administering questionnaire. Height in meters and weight in kg were taken by stadiometer. BMI was calculated using formula BMI=weight in kg/height m². Blood groups were determined by classic (antigen-antibody agglutination test). The data was analyzed through SPSS 20. Descriptive were presented as mean± SD and association of BMI with blood groups was assessed by regression analysis. P value ≤0.05 deemed statistically significant.

Results:

Out of students, 192 attempted the questionnaire and participated in study (96% response rate), 30% of the 192 females were obese, distribution of ABO blood group showed 43%, followed by O, A and AB. 90% were Rh positive and 10% were Rh negative. Blood group O showed a trend towards obesity and blood group AB showed a trend towards lean body.

Conclusion:

The blood group O showed the significant positive association with obesity. Population with blood group O showed greatest susceptibility to be overweight and obese.

Risk Factors for Gastric Cancer: A Systematic Review

Objective: Gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with many influences contributing to the disease. The aim of this study was to identify the most important risk factors. Methods: This study was conducted in 2017 with a structured overview in the Science Directe, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science (ISI) databases. In the first step, articles were extracted based on their titles and abstracts; the quality of 43 articles was evaluated using the STORBE tool. Inclusion criteria were studies carried out on human, English language (first step), year of the study and the study type (second step). Results: Finally, 1,381 articles were found, of which 1,269 were excluded in primary and secondary screening. In reviewing the references of the remaining 44 papers, 4 studies were added. Finally, 43 articles were selected for the quality assessment process. A total of 52 risk factors for gastric cancer were identified and classified into nine important categories: diet, lifestyle, genetic predisposition, family history, treatment and medical conditions, infections, demographic characteristics, occupational exposures and ionizing radiation’. Conclusion: Several environmental and genetic factors are involved in the development of gastric cancer. Regarding the role of changes in ‘diet and lifestyle’, considering appropriate nutrition and improving the level of education and awareness of people is vital for early diagnosis and timely treatment of this disease, especially in people with a family history and genetic predisposition.
