Abstract
Previous studies have reported that different blood groups are associated with the risk of chronic degenerative diseases that mainly involve inflammation and neoplastic processes. We investigate the relationship between blood groups and the erythroprotective effect of extracts from Navicula incerta against oxidative damage as a proposal to develop drugs designed for people with a specific blood type related to chronic pathology. The study was carried out through the elucidation of the erythroprotective potential, anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activity of Navicula incerta. Research suggests that the presence or absence of certain blood groups increases or decreases the abilities of certain phytochemicals to inhibit oxidative stress, which is related to the systemic inflammatory response involved in the development of different types of cancer. The pigment-rich extracts from Navicula incerta inhibit ROO•- induced oxidative stress in human erythrocytes on the A RhD+ve antigen without compromising the structure of the cell membrane. This result is very important, since the A antigen is related to the susceptibility of contracting prostate cancer. Similarly, it was possible to inhibit the proliferation of cervical (HeLa) and prostate (PC-3) carcinoma. The combinatorial analysis of different biological activities can help design phytochemicals as new candidates for preventive drugs treating the chronic degenerative diseases associated with a specific blood group.

Abstract
Background The prognostic value of ABO blood types is not well clarified for esophageal carcinoma (EC). This study attempted to elucidate the associations between different ABO blood types and disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) of EC. Methods This study was a retrospective review of the records of 2179 patients with EC who received surgery from December 2000 to December 2008. The prognostic impact of ABO blood group on DFS and OS were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and cox proportional hazard models. Results Univariate analyses found significant differences in DFS and OS among the four blood types. Multivariate analyses showed ABO blood type independently predicted DFS (P=0.001) and OS (P=0.002). Furthermore, patients with non-B blood types had a significantly shorter DFS (HR=1.22, 95%CI:1.07–1.38, P=0.002) and OS (HR=1.22, 95%CI:1.07–1.38, P=0.003) than patients with blood type B, and patients with non-O blood types had a significantly better DFS (HR=0.86, 95%CI:0.77–0.96, P=0.006) and OS (HR=0.86, 95%CI:0.77–0.96, P=0.007) than patients with blood type O. Subgroup analyses found that blood type B had a better DFS and OS than non-B in patients who were male, younger, early pathological stages and had squamous-cell carcinomas (ESCC). Blood type O had a worse DFS and OS than non-O in patients who were male, younger, and had ESCC (P<0.05). Conclusions The results demonstrate that ABO blood group is an independent prognostic factor of survival, and that type B predicts a favorable prognosis, whereas type O predicts an unfavorable prognosis for survival in patients with EC, especially those with ESCC.

Abstract
A positive association between the ABO blood types and survival has been suggested in several malignancies. However, little is known about the relationship between ABO blood group and survival in rectal cancer patients. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the ABO blood types in predicting the prognosis of a Chinese population in Northwest China region with curatively resected rectal cancer. We retrospectively analyzed 1613 consecutive patients who underwent curative surgery for rectal cancer between June, 2011 and December, 2016. The relationship between the ABO blood types and overall survival (OS) was analyzed. The median follow-up period of the 1613 rectal cancer patients was 69.6 months with 1427 alive. There was a significance difference of survival among ABO blood groups (P=0.007). The mean overall survival (OS) of the blood type B patients was 70.8 months, O was 64.3, whereas the mean OS of the AB and A blood type patients was significantly lower, 58.4 months and 59.7 months respectively (P=0.007, log-rank test). Compared with patients with A and AB blood types, patients with blood type B and O were more likely to have better survival(P=0.001). A blood groups were associated with significantly decreased overall survival in rectal cancer patients (hazard ratio = 1.263; 95% confidence interval = 0.776-2.054, P =0.010). In order to confirm our above results, we performed the same investigation in an independent cohort from another hospital of 505 Chinese patients and get the similar results. Our study showed that ABO blood group is associated with survival in Northwest Chinese patients with rectal cancer and the blood type B and O were favourable prognostic factors for patients with rectal cancer.

Abstract
Objectives: We here attempted to evaluate the prediction of different “ABO” blood groups for postsurgical gastric cancer-specific mortality by using data from the ongoing Fujian prospective investigation of cancer (FIESTA) study. Methods: Initially, a total of 3413 patients with gastric cancer were consecutively enrolled between January 2000 and December 2010 to receive radical gastrectomy, and they were followed up until December 2015. Study patients were divided into the “O+” group and the blood type “O-” group. Results: Of 2781 eligible patients, 1116 (40.1%) were in the “O+” group and 1665 (59.9%) in the “O-” group, with mortality rate of being 45.0% (n = 502) and 45.3% (n = 755), respectively. A 1:1 propensity score match between the “O+” and the “O-” groups was used. After adjustment, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), high total cholesterol and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, had non-overlapping 95% confidence intervals between the “O+” and the “O-” groups and simultaneously had detectable statistical significance in either group only. A forward method in the multivariate-adjusted COX model was employed and there were five shared risk factors between both groups, including diabetes mellitus, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, regional lymph node metastasis, tumor size and TNM stage. Further nomogram plot revealed that presurgical risk factors selected can better predict the risk of early gastric cancer-specific mortality (C-index: 0.737 for the “O-” group and 0.751 for the “O+” group). Conclusions: Our findings indicated that the prognostic factors differed between postsurgical gastric cancer patients with “O+” and “O-” blood types.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have evaluated the association between ABO blood group and the prognosis of various types of cancer; however, little is known about the relationship between ABO blood group and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We investigated how ABO blood group and clinicopathological characteristics are related to the survival of Japanese patients with esophageal SCC. METHODS We reviewed the medical records of 181 patients who underwent surgery for esophageal SCC between June, 2004 and December, 2015 and analyzed the association between ABO blood group and clinicopathological factors. Clinicopathological factors were also evaluated by univariate and multivariate analyses for possible association with survival. RESULTS The prevalence of each blood group was as follows: A, 35.5%; B, 22.4%; O, 32.8%; and AB, 8.2%. The 5-year overall survival of all patients was 37.1%. Patients with non-type B blood had significantly worse 5-year overall survival than those with type B blood (30.2 vs. 58.8%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS ABO blood groups were associated with the survival of Japanese patients with esophageal SCC. Patients with non-B blood groups had significantly worse overall survival than those with the B blood group.

Abstract
The antigens of the ABO system are expressed on red blood cell membranes as well as on the surface of several other normal and pathological cells and tissues. Following the first clinical observations more than 60 years ago, the role of ABO blood group in cancer biology has been intensely studied by several investigators, and it is now widely recognised that ABO antigens are associated with the risk of developing several types of tumours, namely pancreatic and gastric cancers. However, whether this association also affects the clinical outcome of cancer patients is less certain. In this narrative review, based on literature data, we discuss the role of ABO blood types as prognostic biomarkers in different types of cancers. The current knowledge of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of the association is also analysed.

Abstract
Background A positive association between the ABO blood types and survival has been suggested in several malignancies. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the ABO blood types in predicting the prognosis of Chinese patients with curatively resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods We retrospectively analyzed 1601 consecutive Chinese patients who underwent curative surgery for NSCLC between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2009. The relationship between the ABO blood types and survival was investigated. In addition, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results Group 1 (patients with the blood type O or B) had significantly prolonged overall survival (OS) compared with group 2 (patients with the blood type A or AB), with a median OS of 74.9 months versus 61.5 months [hazard ratio (HR) 0.83; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.72–0.96; P = 0.015]. Additionally, group 1 had significantly longer disease-free survival (DFS; HR 0.86; 95% CI 0.76–0.98; P = 0.022) and locoregional relapse-free survival (LRFS; HR 0.79; 95% CI 0.64–0.98; P = 0.024) than group 2. The association was not significantly modified by other risk factors for NSCLC, including smoking status, pathologic tumor-node-metastasis stage, pT category, pN category, and chemotherapy. Conclusions There is an association between the ABO blood types and the survival of Chinese patients with resected NSCLC. Patients with the blood type O or B had significantly prolonged OS, DFS, and LRFS compared with those with the blood type A or AB.

Abstract
Purpose: The impact of ABO blood group on the survival of patients with ovarian cancer remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of the ABO blood group in ovarian cancer patients. Methods: 256 ovarian cancer patients who received a cytoreductive surgery were retrospectively reviewed. The prognostic impact of the ABO blood group with respect to overall survival (OS) was analyzed. Results: The median follow-up time was 57 months and the 5-year OS was 70.1%. The 5-year OS were 55.0%, 83.3%, 82.5%, and 70.0% in patients with A, B, AB, and O blood type, respectively (p = 0.003). Patients with blood type A had a poorer 5-year OS than patients with blood type non-A (55.0% vs. 75.0%, p = 0.001), especially in patients with age > 50 years (40.0% vs. 62.5%, p = 0.004). Univariate Cox analyses showed that blood type A was significantly associated with OS than those with non-A types (hazard ratio (HR) 2.210, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.373-3.557, p = 0.001). Blood type A remained an independent prognostic factor for OS than those with non-A blood types in multivariate analyses (HR 2.235, 95% CI 1.360-3.674, p = 0.002). Conclusion: ABO blood group is associated with survival in patients with ovarian cancer, patients with blood type A had a significantly worse OS than patients with non-A blood types, especially in patients with age > 50 years.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of ABO blood group in Chinese patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) after esophagectomy. Methods This study was a retrospective review of the records of 548 patients with ESCC who received cytoreductive surgery between October 2002 and March 2007. The prognostic impact of ABO blood group on overall survival (OS) was analyzed. Results The median follow-up time was 37 months, and the 5-year OS was 43.3%. The overall 5-year OS was 41.2%, 49.7%, 44.0%, and 29.8% for the A, B, O, and AB groups, respectively (P=0.038). Among patients with negative lymph nodes (LNs), the 5-year OS was 59.0%, 68.2%, 57.9%, and 28.6% for the A, B, O, and AB groups, respectively (P<0.001), but blood type had no value in predicting the OS of patients with positive LNs (P=0.524). In multivariate Cox regression analysis of all patients, ABO blood group was not an independent prognostic factor of OS. However, in patients with negative LNs, blood type was an independent prognostic factor of OS, and the higher risk of death for patients of type AB versus non-AB significant in multivariate analyses (hazard ratio [HR], 2.576; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.349–4.919; P=0.004). Conclusion ABO blood group is associated with survival in Chinese patients with ESCC. Patients with blood type AB had a significantly worse OS than patients with non-AB type, especially in patients with negative LNs.

Abstract
Background: Previous studies supported a link between the ABO blood type and survival for several types of malignancies. Nonetheless, the relationship between ABO blood type and survival in colon cancer patients has not been rigorously evaluated. The goal of this retrospective analysis was to discern the correlations between ABO blood group and colon cancer survival. Methods: A total of 1555 colon cancer patients that underwent curative-intent surgery between October 1995 and June 2002 were eligible for this study. The primary outcomes measured were the association between ABO blood group and patient survival. Results: Compared with patients with non-AB blood types (blood types A, B, and O), patients with blood type AB were more likely to have better survival. The mean overall survival (OS) of the blood type AB patients was 113.9 months, whereas the mean OS of the non-AB blood type patients was significantly lower, 106.1 months (P<0.001, log-rank test). Compared with patients with blood type AB, the hazard ratios for patients with A, B, and O were 4.37 (95% confidence interval (95% CI), 2.65–7.20), 2.99 (95% CI, 1.81–4.96), and 2.78 (95% CI, 1.69–4.56), respectively. Conclusions: Blood type AB is a favourable prognostic factor for patients with colon cancer.

Abstract
The association between clinical characteristics, prognosis, and the ABO blood group of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is rarely discussed. The aims of the current study were to investigate the correlation of the ABO blood group with the clinicopathological characteristics in a consecutive cohort of patients with ESCC and to assess whether the ABO blood group was associated with prognosis. A total of 511 patients with locoregional ESCC who underwent curative treatment were retrospectively analyzed at a single institution between January 2007 and December 2008. The relationship between the ABO blood group and clinicopathological variables was assessed by chi-squared analysis. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the 5-year overall survival (OS). The Cox proportional hazards model was used in univariate and multivariate analyses of OS. There were no significant differences in the clinicopathological characteristics among patients with different ABO blood groups. The 5-year OS rates were 50.0 % for patients with blood type A, 45.4 % for type B, 50.8 % for type O, and 60.7 % for type AB. In a subgroup analysis of 321 patients who ever smoked, the B/O group had a poorer OS compared with the A/AB group (p = 0.0245). Multivariate analysis revealed an unfavorable and independent impact of the B/O group on patient survival with ESCC who ever smoked (p = 0.011). Findings suggest the B/O blood type as a predictor of mortality in ESCC patients who ever smoked. Future studies conducted prospectively are warranted to confirm this work and to better understand the underlying biological mechanisms.

Abstract
Background: ABO blood group is associated with aetiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC); however, the effect of it on survival of patients diagnosed with NPC has not been explored. Methods: We retrospectively analysed two cohorts of southern Chinese patients with WHO histological type III: intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) cohort, 924 patients; and conventional radiotherapy (CRT) cohort, 1193 patients. Associations of ABO blood group with survival were estimated using Cox regression. Results: In IMRT cohort, we observed significant associations of blood type A with overall survival (OS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), compared with type O, after adjusting for prognostic factors. Compared with non-A blood types (B, AB, and O), type A patients had significantly lower OS and DMFS (adjusted hazard ratio (HR)=1.49, 95% CI 1.03–2.17, P=0.036; HR=1.68, 95% CI 1.13–2.51, P=0.011, respectively); similar results were obtained in CRT cohort. Subgroup analyses of the entire population showed that lower OS conferred by blood type A was not significantly modified by age, smoking status, drinking status, immunoglobulin A against Epstein–Barr virus viral capsid antigen (VCA-IgA) titre, or chemotherapy; however, lower OS was not observed in female patients or patients with early clinical stage disease. Conclusion: ABO blood group is associated with survival in NPC; patients with blood type A had significantly lower OS and DMFS than patients with non-A blood types.

Abstract
AIM: To explore the potential risk factors related to gastrointestinal cancer in northern China.
METHODS: A total of 3314 cases of gastrointestinal cancer (esophageal, gastric, pancreatic and biliary) and 2223 controls (including healthy individuals, glioma and thyroid cancer) were analyzed by case-control study. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to evaluate the association between different cancers and hepatitis B surface antigen, sex, age, blood type, diabetes, or family history of cancer.
RESULTS: Type 2 diabetes was significantly associated with gastric, biliary and pancreatic cancer with an OR of 2.0-3.0. Blood type B was significantly associated with esophageal cancer [odd ratio (OR) = 1.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.10-2.14] and biliary cancer (OR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.09-2.05). The prevalence of type 2 diabetes was significantly higher in gastric, biliary and pancreatic cancers compared with other groups, with ORs ranging between 2.0 and 3.0. Family history of cancer was strongly associated with gastrointestinal compared with other cancers.
CONCLUSION: Blood type B individuals are susceptible to esophageal and biliary cancer. Type 2 diabetes is significantly associated with gastric, biliary and especially pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to determine the association between ABO blood group and the risk and progression of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) in the Han Chinese ethnic group. During the period of 2000-2009, 1,431 patients with PDAC and 1,449 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited in two university-affiliated hospitals. An unconditional multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs). The relationship between patient ABO blood group and clinicopathologic features was also analyzed. Compared with subjects having blood group O, a modestly higher risk was observed among cases with blood group A or AB with adjusted ORs (95% confidence interval) of 1.368 (1.127-1.661) and 1.391 (1.053-1.838), respectively. The TNM stages of tumors in patients with non-O blood groups (A, B or AB) were more highly advanced than in patients with blood group O (p < 0.001). Among patients who underwent a potentially curative operation, the median survival time of patients with blood group O was significantly longer than that of patients with non-O blood groups (16.0 months vs. 11.0 months, p = 0.001, log-rank test). This study shows evidence of an association between blood group type and risk for development and progression of PDAC. These findings merit further confirmation in a large population-based prospective study in patients of the Han Chinese ethnic group.

Abstract
Little is known about the relationship between ABO blood groups and the clinicopathologic features in gastric adenocarcinoma patients of China. Whether the distribution of ABO blood groups in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma differs from that with benign diseases is also unknown. A total of 474 gastric adenocarcinoma patients and 404 with benign diseases were enrolled for the study. The relationship between patients' ABO blood groups and the clinicopathologic features was analyzed. The percentage of blood group AB was more common in men of gastric cancer than in benign diseases. The proportion of angiolymphatic invasion among patients with blood group O was significantly lower than those with other blood groups (P = 0.034). Proportion of tumors associated with estrogen receptor (ER), progestogen receptor (PR) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) expression in blood type A was significantly higher than in other blood types (P = 0.002 for ER expression, 0.009 for PR expression, 0.003 for CEA expression). Proportion of tumors associated with serum CEA and CA19-9 elevation in blood type AB was significantly lower than in other blood types (P < 0.001 for serum CEA elevation, 0.005 for CA19-9 elevation). Though there was no significant difference between ABO blood groups and survival of the patients, patients with blood group B had a trend to show superiority in the survival. The significance of ABO blood group distribution might be associated with biological behavior of gastric adenocarcinoma patients. However, it was found not to be a prognosis factor for patients with gastric adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
ABH and Lewis antigen expression has been associated with cancer development and prognosis, tumor differentiation, and metastasis. Considering that invasive ductal breast carcinoma (IDC) presents multiple molecular alterations, the aim of the present study was to determine whether the polymorphism of ABO, Lewis, and Secretor genes, as well as ABO phenotyping, could be associated with tumor differentiation and lymph nodes metastasis. Seventy-six women with IDC and 78 healthy female blood donors were submitted to ABO phenotyping/genotyping and Lewis and Secretor genotyping. Phenotyping was performed by hemagglutination and genotyping by the polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers. ABO, Lewis, and Secretor genes were classified by individual single nucleotide polymorphism at sites 59, 1067, 202, and 314 of the Lewis gene, 428 of the Secretor gene, and 261 (O1 allele), 526 (O2 and B allele), and 703 (B allele). No association was found between breast cancer and ABO antigen expression (P = 0.9323) or genotype (P = 0.9356). Lewis-negative genotype was associated with IDC (P = 0.0126) but not with anatomoclinical parameters. Nonsecretor genotype was associated with axillary lymph node metastasis (P = 0.0149). In conclusion, Lewis and Secretor genotyping could be useful to predict respectively breast cancer susceptibility and axillary lymph nodes metastasis.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have examined the association between ABO blood group and the risk of some malignancies. However, no prospective cohort study to date has examined the association between ABO blood group and the risk of skin cancer. Methodology/Principal Findings Using two large cohorts in the US, we examined ABO blood type and incidence of skin cancer, including melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We followed up study participants (70,650 female nurses and 24,820 male health professionals) on their diagnosis of incident skin cancer from cohort baseline (1976 in women and 1986 in men) until 2006. Study participants reported their blood type in 1996 in both cohorts. During the follow-up, 685 participants developed melanoma, 1,533 developed SCC and 19,860 developed BCC. We used Cox proportional hazards models to calculate the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of each type of skin cancer. We observed that non-O blood group (A, AB, and B combined) was significantly associated with a decreased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer overall. Compared to participants with blood group O, participants with non-O blood group had a 14% decreased risk of developing SCC (multivariable HR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.95) and a 4% decreased risk of developing BCC (multivariable HR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.93, 0.99). The decreased risk of melanoma for non-O blood group was not statistically significant (multivariable HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.78, 1.05). Conclusion/Significance In two large independent populations, non-O blood group was associated with a decreased risk of skin cancer. The association was statistically significant for non-melanoma skin cancer. Additional studies are needed to confirm these associations and to define the mechanisms by which ABO blood type or closely linked genetic variants may influence skin cancer risk.

Abstract
The distribution of ABO and Rhesus blood group types was investigated in 984 randomly selected human T lymphotropic virus-1(HTLV-1)-infected blood donors from April 2004 to March 2007. A total of 1081 healthy controls admitted for blood donation in this period were enrolled in this study. Infected and control individuals were from the same region and their ABO/Rhesus blood group types were determined by the standard tube test technique. All blood samples were screened for HTLV-1 using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and positive samples were confirmed by Western blot (WB). The unmatched analyses showed significant differences in frequency of the A+ blood group between healthy controls and HTLV-1-infected individuals (OR = 0.8, 95% CI = 0.66-0.97) and also a significant association was observed between these two groups(OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.1-1.99, p = 0.021). No significant difference in blood group (A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, and AB-) was observed between cases and controls. It is the first report of an association between HTLV-1-infected patients and ABO/Rh blood groups in our literature review. Our results might suggest that the A+ blood group decrease the risk of HTLV-1 infection in healthy controls, while the AB+ blood group is more frequent in HTLV-1 carriers and increases the risk of HTLV-1 infection.
