Trends and differences in homicide mortality in Colombia and Mexico, 1990-2016: Two Realities, One Problem

Objective

To document trends in inequity in homicide rates in Mexico for the period 2000-2021, at the state and national levels.

Methods

An observational, longitudinal ecological study was conducted in which standardized homicide mortality rates were estimated, by municipality and sex. Municipalities were classified in five groups, according to the Social Lag Index. The absolute inequality gap was obtained, as well as differences between groups with very high and very low social lag, for each year of the study period.

Results

In the 32 states, an increase was observed in the rate of death by homicide, with higher rates among men but a greater relative increase among women (+127.86% vs. +110.03%). The absolute gap between municipalities with very high and very low social lag narrowed in the period, due to higher homicide rates in municipalities with low social lag and a modest reduction in municipalities with very high social lag.

Conclusions

In Mexico, between 2000 and 2021, the absolute gap in deaths by homicide between municipalities with very high and very low social lag declined due to higher homicide rates in municipalities with lower social lag. It is necessary to strengthen policies and actions aimed at addressing the social determinants of interpersonal violence.

Trend Analysis of Homicide Mortality and Years of Life Lost in the South of Iran, 2004-2019

BACKGROUND

This study was conducted to determine the mortality rate and years of life lost (YLL) due to homicide in Fars province.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a cross-sectional study.

METHODS

All data related to deaths due to homicide in Fars province were obtained from the Populationbased Electronic Death Registration System. Crude and age-standardized mortality rate, YLL, and YLL rate data were calculated and joinpoint regression was used to examine the trend.

RESULTS

During 2004-2019, 2148 deaths due to homicide occurred in Fars province, and (1782 cases (83.0%) were men. The crude mortality rate in men decreased by 44.0% from 2004 to 2019, but a stable trend was observed in women. The total YLL due to homicide during these 16 years was 43230 (1.37 per 1000 people) in men and 8931 (0.29 per 1000 people) in women. According to the joinpoint regression analysis, the 16-year trend of the YLL rate due to premature mortality in men was decreasing, and the annual percent change (APC) was -4.00% (95% confidence interval [CI]: -6.60 to -1.20, P=0.008). However, women demonstrated stable trends in this respect, and APC was -0.50% (95% CI: -3.10 to 2.20, P=0.704).

CONCLUSION

The crude and standardized mortality rates and the number of YLL due to homicide in the study period had a significant decreasing trend in men but a stable trend in women. To control this issue, officials and policymakers should identify the areas of homicide and control its risk factors such as economic and social issues, drug addiction, and the state of violence.

The burden of injuries in Mexico: Secondary data analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study, 1990 to 2019

IMPORTANCE

Injuries have been a major cause of premature mortality and short-term and long-term disability in Mexico.

OBJECTIVE

To report the findings from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study on injuries in Mexico at a national and subnational scale from 1990 to 2019.

METHODS

Following the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study we examined injury mortality, premature mortality, years lived with disability and disability-adjusted life-years according to 14 subcategories. We calculated the Pearson correlation coefficient between the injury burden and the socio-demographic index.

RESULTS

While the number of deaths from injuries increased significantly, the changes in the age-standardized mortality rates trended towards declines. Interpersonal violence, road injuries, falls and self-harm accounted for 8 of every 10 deaths from injury in 2019. Injury mortality and the disability-adjusted life-years rates decreased nationally and in most states in the period as a whole, but have increased since 2007. The injury burden was higher for men in all age groups. Interpersonal violence caused the highest disability-adjusted life-years rate in males and road injuries in females. The socio-demographic index increased in all states, while the injury age-standardized disability-adjusted life-years rates between 1990 and 2019 decreased, but there was no statistical association between both indicators.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

This study represents a comprehensive review of injury burden of disease in Mexico. The injury burden decreased, but improved heterogeneously among states. To further reduce the injury burden of disease, it's necessary for federal, state and local governments to prioritize safety promotion and injury prevention programs, infrastructure improvements, legislation, and enforcement at a national and subnational level. Mexico's injury prevention efforts should also be tailored for specific age groups, such as males aged 20-49 years or females in the younger and older age groups, and high-burden areas.
