Interfacial Assembly of 2D Graphene-Derived Ion Channels for Water-Based Green Energy Conversion

The utilization of sustained and green energy is believed to alleviate increasing menace of global environmental concerns and energy dilemma. Interfacial assembly of 2D graphene-derived ion channels (2D-GDICs) with tunable ion/fluid transport behavior enables efficient harvesting of renewable green energy from ubiquitous water, especially for osmotic energy harvesting. In this review, various interfacial assembly strategies for fabricating diverse 2D-GDICs are summarized and their ion transport properties are discussed. This review analyzes how particular structure and charge density/distribution of 2D-GDIC can be modulated to minimize internal resistance of ion/fluid transport and enhance energy conversion efficiency, and highlights stimuli-responsive functions and stability of 2D-GDIC and further examines the possibility of integrating 2D-GDIC with other energy conversion systems. Notably, the presented preparation and applications of 2D-GDIC also inspire and guide other 2D materials to fabricate sophisticated ion channels for targeted applications. Finally, potential challenges in this field is analyzed and a prospect to future developments toward high-performance or large-scale real-word applications is offered.

2D Ordered Mesoporous Lamellar Hetero-Nanochannels with Asymmetric Wettability for Controllable Ion Transport

Heterogeneous membranes play a crucial role in osmotic energy conversion by effectively reducing concentration polarization. However, most heterogeneous membranes mitigate concentration polarization through an asymmetric charge distribution, resulting in compromised ion selectivity. Herein, hetero-nanochannels with asymmetric wettability composed of 2D mesoporous carbon and graphene oxide are constructed. The asymmetric wettability of the membrane endows it with the ability to suppress the concentration polarization without degrading the ion selectivity, as well as achieving a diode-like ion transport feature. As a result, enhanced osmotic energy harvesting is achieved with a power density of 6.41 W m-2 . This represents a substantial enhancement of 102.80-137.85% when compared to homogeneous 2D membranes, surpassing the performance of the majority of reported 2D membranes. Importantly, the membrane can be further used for high-performance ionic power harvesting by regulating ion transport, exceeding previously reported data by 89.1%.

Superassembled MXene-carboxymethyl chitosan nanochannels for the highly sensitive recognition and detection of copper ions

Copper ions (Cu2+), as a crucial trace element, play a vital role in living organisms. Thus, the detection of Cu2+ is of great significance for disease prevention and diagnosis. Nanochannel devices with an excellent nanoconfinement effect show great potential in recognizing and detecting Cu2+ ions. However, these devices often require complicated modification and treatment, which not only damages the membrane structure, but also induces nonspecific, low-sensitivity and non-repeatable detection. Herein, a 2D MXene-carboxymethyl chitosan (MXene/CMC) freestanding membrane with ordered lamellar channels was developed by a super-assembly strategy. The introduction of CMC provides abundant space charges, improving the nanoconfinement effect of the nanochannel. Importantly, the CMC can chelate with Cu2+ ions, endowing the MXene/CMC with the ability to detect Cu2+. The formation of CMC-Cu2+ complexes decreases the space charges, leading to a discernible variation in the current signal. Therefore, MXene/CMC can achieve highly sensitive and stable Cu2+ detection based on the characteristics of nanochannel composition. The linear response range for Cu2+ detection is 10-9 to 10-5 M with a low detection limit of 0.095 nM. Notably, MXene/CMC was successfully applied for Cu2+ detection in real water and fetal bovine serum samples. This work provides a simple, highly sensitive and stable detection platform based on the properties of the nanochannel composition.

Fluorogen-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Hybrid Sensing Materials: Applications in Cu2+ Detection

Since Cu2+ ions play a pivotal role in both ecosystems and human health, the development of a rapid and sensitive method for Cu2+ detection holds significant importance. Fluorescent mesoporous silica materials (FMSMs) have garnered considerable attention in the realm of chemical sensing, biosensing, and bioimaging due to their distinctive structure and easily functionalized surfaces. As a result, numerous Cu2+ sensors based on FMSMs have been devised and extensively applied in environmental and biological Cu2+ detection over the past few decades. This review centers on the recent advancements in the methodologies for preparing FMSMs, the mechanisms underlying sensing, and the applications of FMSMs-based sensors for Cu2+ detection. Lastly, we present and elucidate pertinent perspectives concerning FMSMs-based Cu2+ sensors.

Biocatalytic Buoyancy-Driven Nanobots for Autonomous Cell Recognition and Enrichment

Autonomously self-propelled nanoswimmers represent the next-generation nano-devices for bio- and environmental technology. However, current nanoswimmers generate limited energy output and can only move in short distances and duration, thus are struggling to be applied in practical challenges, such as living cell transportation. Here, we describe the construction of biodegradable metal-organic framework based nanobots with chemically driven buoyancy to achieve highly efficient, long-distance, directional vertical motion to "find-and-fetch" target cells. Nanobots surface-functionalized with antibodies against the cell surface marker carcinoembryonic antigen are exploited to impart the nanobots with specific cell targeting capacity to recognize and separate cancer cells. We demonstrate that the self-propelled motility of the nanobots can sufficiently transport the recognized cells autonomously, and the separated cells can be easily collected with a customized glass column, and finally regain their full metabolic potential after the separation. The utilization of nanobots with easy synthetic pathway shows considerable promise in cell recognition, separation, and enrichment.

Site-selective superassembly of biomimetic nanorobots enabling deep penetration into tumor with stiff stroma

Chemotherapy remains as the first-choice treatment option for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, the limited tumor penetration and low cellular internalization efficiency of current nanocarrier-based systems impede the access of anticancer drugs to TNBC with dense stroma and thereby greatly restricts clinical therapeutic efficacy, especially for TNBC bone metastasis. In this work, biomimetic head/hollow tail nanorobots were designed through a site-selective superassembly strategy. We show that nanorobots enable efficient remodeling of the dense tumor stromal microenvironments (TSM) for deep tumor penetration. Furthermore, the self-movement ability and spiky head markedly promote interfacial cellular uptake efficacy, transvascular extravasation, and intratumoral penetration. These nanorobots, which integrate deep tumor penetration, active cellular internalization, near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive release, and photothermal therapy capacities into a single nanodevice efficiently suppress tumor growth in a bone metastasis female mouse model of TNBC and also demonstrate potent antitumor efficacy in three different subcutaneous tumor models.

Dual-Functional Super-Assembled Mesoporous Carbon-Titania/AAO Hetero-Channels for Bidirectionally Photo-Regulated Ion Transport

Photo-regulated nanofluidic devices have attracted great attention in recent years due to their adjustable ion transport in real time. However, most of the photo-responsive nanofluidic devices can only adjust the ionic current unidirectionally, and cannot simultaneously increase or decrease the current signal intelligently by one device. Herein, a mesoporous carbon-titania/ anodized aluminum hetero-channels (MCT/AAO) is constructed by super-assembly strategy, which exhibits dual-function of cation selectivity and photo response. The polymer and TiO2 nanocrystals jointly build the MCT framework. Polymer framework with abundant negatively charged sites endows MCT/AAO with excellent cation selectivity, and TiO2 nanocrystals are responsible for the photo-regulated ion transport. High photo current densities of 1.8 mA m-2 (increase) and 1.2 mA m-2 (decrease) are realized by MCT/AAO benefiting from the ordered hetero-channels. Significantly, MCT/AAO can also achieve the bidirectionally adjustable osmotic energy by alternating the configurations of concentration gradient. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that the superior photo-generated potential is responsible for the bidirectionally adjustable ion transport. Consequently, MCT/AAO performs the function of harvesting ionic energy from the equilibrium electrolyte solution, which greatly expands its practical application field. This work provides a new strategy in constructing dual-functional hetero-channels toward bidirectionally photo-regulated ionic transport and energy harvesting.

Biotransformation of carbendazim in cowpea pickling process

Carbendazim, a systemic fungicide, is one of the most commonly detected pesticides in cowpeas. Pickled cowpea is a fermented vegetable product with unique flavor favored in China. The dissipation and degradation of carbendazim were investigated in the pickled process. The degradation rate constant of carbendazim in pickled cowpeas was 0.9945 and the half-life of the carbendazim was 14.06 ± 0.82 d. Seven transformation products (TPs) were identified in the pickled process. Furthermore, the toxicity of some TPs show more harmful to three aquatic organisms (TP134) and rats (all the identified TPs) than carbendazim. And most of the TPs posed more development toxicity and mutagenicity than carbendazim. 4 out of 7 TPs were discovered in the real pickled cowpea samples. These results shed light on the degradation and biotransformation of the carbendazim in the pickled process, to better understand the potential health risk of pickled food and evaluate the environmental pollution.

Site-Selective Superassembly of a Multilevel Asymmetric Nanomotor with Wavelength-Modulated Propulsion Mechanisms

Micro-/nanomotors with advanced motion manipulation have recently received mounting interest; however, research focusing on the motion regulation strategies is still limited, as the simple construction and composition of micro-/nanomotors restrict the functionality. Herein, a multifunctional TiO₂-SiO₂-mesoporous carbon nanomotor is synthesized via an interfacial superassembly strategy. This nanomotor shows an asymmetric matchstick-like structure, with a head composed of TiO₂ and a tail composed of SiO₂. Mesoporous carbon is selectively grown on the surface of TiO₂ through surface-charge-mediated assembly. The spatially anisotropic distribution of the photocatalytic TiO₂ domain and photothermal carbon domain enables multichannel control of the motion, where the speed can be regulated by energy input and the directionality can be regulated by wavelength. Upon UV irradiation, the nanomotor exhibits a head-leading self-diffusiophoretic motion, while upon NIR irradiation, the nanomotor exhibits a tail-leading self-thermophoretic motion. As a proof-of-concept, this mechanism-switchable nanomotor is employed in wavelength-regulated targeted cargo delivery on a microfluidic chip. From an applied point of view, this nanomotor holds potential in biomedical applications such as active drug delivery and phototherapy. From a fundamental point of view, this research can provide insight into the relationship between the nanostructures, propulsion mechanisms, and motion performance.

Superassembly of 4-Aminothiophenol-Modified Mesoporous Titania-Alumina Oxide Heterochannels for Smart Ion Transport Based on the Photo-Induced Electron-Transfer Process

Light-responsive nanochannels have attracted extensive attention due to their noninvasive external field control and intelligent ion regulation. However, the limited photoresponsive current and the low photoelectric conversion efficiency still restrict their development. Here, a light-controlled nanochannel composed of 4-aminothiophenol and gold nanoparticles-modified mesoporous titania nanopillar arrays and alumina oxide (4-ATP-Au-MTI/AAO) is fabricated by the interfacial super-assembly strategy. Inspired by the process of electron transfer between photosystem I and photosystem II, the efficient electron transfer between TiO₂, AuNPs, and 4-ATP under light is achieved by coupling the photoresponsive materials and functional molecules. Under illumination, 4-ATP is oxidized to p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP), which brings about changes in the wettability of the nanochannel, resulting in significant improvement (252.8%) of photoresponsive current. In addition, under the action of the reductant, the nanochannels can be restored to the initial dark state, enabling multiple reversible cycles. This work opens a new route for the fabrication of high-performance light-controlled nanochannels by coupling light-responsive materials and light-responsive molecules, which may guide the development of photoelectric conversion nanochannel systems.

Balancing Mass Transfer and Active Sites to Improve Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction by B,N Codoped C Nanoreactors

Mass transfer is critical in catalytic processes, especially when the reactions are facilitated by nanostructured catalysts. Strong efforts have been devoted to improving the efficacy and quantity of active sites, but often, mass transfer has not been well studied. Herein, we demonstrate the importance of mass transfer in the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by tailoring the pore sizes. Using a confined-etching strategy, we fabricate boron- and nitrogen-doped carbon (B,N@C) electrocatalysts featuring abundant active sites but different porous structures. The ORR performance of these catalysts is found to correlate with diffusion of the reactant. The optimized B,N@C with trimodal-porous structures feature enhanced O₂ diffusion and better activity per heteroatomic site toward the ORR process. This work demonstrates the significance of the nanoarchitecture engineering of catalysts and sheds light on how to optimize structures featuring abundant active sites and enhanced mass transfer.

Surgical Precision and Efficiency of a Novel Electromagnetic System Compared to a Robot-Assisted System in Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Placement of Endo-LIF

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective database study.

OBJECTIVES

To compare the accuracy and safety of 2 types of a computer-assisted navigation system for percutaneous pedicle screw placement during endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion.

METHODS

From May 2019 to January 2020, data of 56 patients who underwent Endo-LIF with a robot-assisted system and with an electromagnetic navigation system were compared. The pedicles in all patients were subjected to postoperative CT scan to assess screw correction by measuring the perpendicular distance between the pedicle cortical wall and the screw surface. The registration and matching time, guide-wire insertion time, the entire surgery time, and X-ray exposure time were recorded.

RESULTS

In the robot-assisted group, 25 cases with 100 percutaneous pedicle screws were included, and the excellent and good rate was 95%. In the electromagnetic navigation group, 31 cases with 124 screws were included, and the excellent rate was 97.6%. There was no statistical difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). The registration time and the total time for the surgery also showed no statistical differences (P > 0.05). The main difference between the two groups was the guide-wire insertion time and the X-ray exposure time (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Both electromagnetic navigation and robot-assisted are safe and efficient for percutaneous pedicle screw placement. Electromagnetic navigation system has obvious advantages over robot-assisted in terms of faster guide-wire placement and less X-ray exposure. Robot-assisted for percutaneous pedicle screw placement offers a preoperative planning system and a stable registration system, with obvious drawbacks of a strict training curve.

Interfacial Super-Assembly of Intertwined Nanofibers toward Hybrid Nanochannels for Synergistic Salinity Gradient Power Conversion

Capturing the abundant salinity gradient power into electric power by nanofluidic systems has attracted increasing attention and has shown huge potential to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution problems. However, not only the imbalance between permeability and selectivity but also the poor stability and high cost of traditional membranes limit their scale-up realistic applications. Here, intertwined "soft-hard" nanofibers/tubes are densely super-assembled on the surface of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) to construct a heterogeneous nanochannel membrane, which exhibits smart ion transport and improved salinity gradient power conversion. In this process, one-dimensional (1D) "soft" TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are wrapped around "hard" carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form three-dimensional (3D) dense nanochannel networks, subsequently forming a CNF-CNT/AAO hybrid membrane. The 3D nanochannel networks constructed by this intertwined "soft-hard" nanofiber/tube method can significantly enhance the membrane stability while maintaining the ion selectivity and permeability. Furthermore, benefiting from the asymmetric structure and charge polarity, the hybrid nanofluidic membrane displays a low membrane inner resistance, directional ionic rectification characteristics, outstanding cation selectivity, and excellent salinity gradient power conversion performance with an output power density of 3.3 W/m². Besides, a pH sensitive property of the hybrid membrane is exhibited, and a higher power density of 4.2 W/m² can be achieved at a pH of 11, which is approximately 2 times more compared to that of pure 1D nanomaterial based homogeneous membranes. These results indicate that this interfacial super-assembly strategy can provide a way for large-scale production of nanofluidic devices for various fields including salinity gradient energy harvesting.

Study on the application of coal spontaneous combustion positive pressure beam tube classification monitoring and early warning

To improve the accuracy of early warning on coal spontaneous combustion (CSC), this paper, on the basis of the principle of preferential selection of index gases in CSC process, carries out fitting analysis of the variation curve of index gas data with coal temperature by combining logistic fitting model, then establishes a CSC graded warning system based on positive pressure beam tube monitoring, and determines CO, O₂, φ(CO)/φ(O₂), C₂H₄, C₂H₆, φ(C₂H₄)/φ(C₂H₆) as the index gases for predicting and forecasting CSC, and accurately divides the CSC process into seven levels of early warning: safe, gray, blue, yellow, orange, red, and black. Applying the CSC positive pressure beam tube monitoring system to Dongtan coal mine and analyzing the error by manual sampling and sampling by positive pressure beam tube system, we find that the error is less than 0.1%. Monitoring of several working faces, we get that the CO and CH₄ concentrations of 14,320 working face are higher than the normal level at the beginning of mining, and the 100 × CO/ΔO₂ value is higher than the gray warning threshold of 0.1, and the warning level is gray warning. After taking timely preventive measures against coal oxidation and warming, the CO and CH₄ concentrations return to the normal level and the warning level drops to the safe level. This paper improves the monitoring, identifying and early warning capabilities of underground CSC in its early stage.

Identification and molecular docking study of sugarcane leaf-derived compounds as potent dipeptidyl peptidase IV, α-glucosidase, and α-amylase inhibitors

BACKGROUND

Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV), α-glucosidase, and α-amylase play a prominent role in regulating postprandial blood sugar levels, which are regarded as key targets for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The present study aimed to characterize bioactive compounds as potent crucial sugar metabolism enzyme inhibitors from sugarcane leaves by virtual screening. In total, 41 sugarcane leaf-derived compounds were used for the screening of multiple targets. Subsequently, the molecular mechanism and activity validation in vitro of the interaction between enzymes and compound were carried out.

RESULTS

Flavonoid compound schaftoside was identified by molecular simulation and showed significant DPP-IV (0.1050 ± 1.22 mmol L^-1 ), α-glucosidase (0.078 ± 0.06 mmol L^-1 ), and α-amylase (0.3067 ± 0.35 mmol L^-1 ) inhibitory effects. The residues ARG125 and TYR662 of DPP-IV may play crucial roles in inhibiting the activity of DPP-IV. Multiple hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions were exhibited between schaftoside and α-glucosidase. Molecular modeling revealed that schaftoside displays strong binding with the catalytic triad (ASP197, ASP300, and GLU233) of α-amylase.

CONCLUSION

Our findings demonstrate that schaftoside from sugarcane leaves might be an edible for T2DM treatment." © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Multi-Wavelength Light-Responsive Metal-Phenolic Network-Based Microrobots for Reactive Species Scavenging

Light-driven microrobots with different propulsion mechanisms have attracted great attention in microrobot synthesis and applications. However, current systems rely heavily on precious metals, using a complex synthesis process and limited working wavelength. It is therefore of great interest to fabricate microrobots that can be driven by multi-wavelength irradiation and with simple components. Here, metal-phenolic network (MPN)-based microrobots are synthesized using a sacrificial polystyrene bead template and an extra capping is added to regulate their symmetry. The hollow MPN microrobots with different layers of capping are capable of moving under both near-infrared (NIR) irradiation and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, without fuel. The velocity of the microrobots under irradiation is altered by the thickness of the asymmetric capping and their motion could be manipulated remotely by switching the NIR or UV irradiation on and off. With light-driven mobility, the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) scavenging activity of the microrobots is significantly increased. Therefore, this proposed microrobot system provides a synthesis strategy to develop asymmetric light-navigated microrobots for future medical treatment with tunable structure, multi-wavelength light-responsive mobility, and great RONS scavenging capacity.

Engineering 2D Aligned Nanowires Assembled Porous Hetero-Membrane for Smart Ion Transport

Engineering 2D nanosheets with well-defined porous structures and their assembled heterostructure membrane is a promising method to improve osmotic energy conversion. However, it is still a great challenge to directly fabricate 2D nanosheets with regular parallel nanochannels in aqueous media. Here, the desired functional nanosheets and heterostructure membrane device are successfully prepared through a simple interfacial assembly strategy. In this method, monolayer cylindrical monomicelles closely arrange and assemble on the surfaces of graphene oxide, and the resulting nanosheets with monolayered aligned nanowire polymer arrays parallel to the substrate surfaces are then obtained. Subsequently, a heterostructured membrane is constructed by assembling these 2D nanosheets on macroporous alumina. The nanofluidic membrane device with asymmetric geometry and charge polarity exhibits smart ion transport properties, and the output osmotic power density is ≈1.22 and 1.63 times over the reported pure 2D graphene oxide and biomass-derived membranes, respectively. In addition, theoretical calculations are carried out to reveal the mechanisms for ion selectivity and salinity gradient energy conversion. This monolayered interfacial assembly approach can open up new avenues for the synthesis of functional porous low-dimensional nanomaterials and membrane devices, and expand the palette of materials selection for many applications.

Super-assembled mesoporous thin films with asymmetric nanofluidic channels for sensitive and reversible electrical sensing

Bioinspired artificial nanochannels have emerged as promising candidates for developing smart nanofluidic sensors due to their highly controllable size and surface functionality. However, little attention has been paid to the role of the outer surface of the nanochannels in enhancing the detection sensitivity. Herein, an asymmetric nanochannel-based responsive detection platform with ultrathin tannic acid modified mesoporous silica (TA-MS) layer and alumina oxide (AAO) thin film is prepared through super-assembly strategy. The functional TA-MS outer surface layer provides abundant phenolic groups on the nanochannels for ions and molecules transport, which paves the way for the development of heterochannels for label-free, reversible and highly sensitive dopamine (DA) detection based off of cation displacement effect. Notably, by engineering optimal thickness of the TA-MS, the sensing performance can be further improved. After optimization, the linear response ranges for DA detection are 0.001-1 μM, 1-10 μM and 10-200 μM with the detection limit of 0.1 nM. The prepared sensor exhibits stable reversibility after several detection cycles. In addition, this method was successfully applied for DA detection in fetal bovine serum sample. Theoretical calculations further prove the detection mechanism. This work opens a new horizon of using mesoporous materials to construct nanofluidic sensors for ultrasensitive small molecule detection and recognition.

In Situ Interfacial Super-Assembly of Nanobiohybrids through Plant for Food-Grade Oral Medicine

Developing a next-generation oral drug delivery system with enhanced efficacy and limited side effects is highly desired for refractory diseases treatment such as colitis. The bioinspired assembly of drugs within food-grade plants highlights its potential value of this unique hybrid material. Herein, we report the preparation of drug-encapsulated vegetable nanobiohybrid superassembled frameworks as an oral food-grade drug delivery system (SAF-FGDD). The in situ superassembly of SAF-FGDD driven by natural transpiration from living plants is carried out through a sustainable and low-carbon manner, allowing for the assembly of distinct precursors inside edible living plants. As an example, mesalazine, an anti-inflammatory drug, is encapsulated in the frameworks for colitis treatment. The cell activity and feeding experiments of zebrafish and mice demonstrate the excellent efficacy of this SAF-FGDD. Compared with those of the control groups, the disease activity index scores and histological scores of the SAF-FGDD group were significantly decreased by 80% and 98%, respectively. The improved performance is attributed to the biocompatibility and protective effect of SAF-FGDD, allowing for abundant mesalazine to be released and act at the site of the intestine during the process of food digestion. In combination with mature soilless cultivation technology, plant-based organisms with natural structure-forming abilities possess broad commercial prospects in large-scale production of various food-grade functional materials.

Analysis of the Safety and Pregnancy Outcomes of Fertility-sparing Surgery in Ovarian Malignant Sex Cord-stromal Tumours: A Multicentre Retrospective Study

AIMS

To assess the difference in survival between fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) and radical surgery and explore pregnancy outcomes after FSS in stage I malignant sex cord-stromal tumours (MSCSTs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We carried out a multicentre retrospective cohort study on patients who were diagnosed with MSCSTs and the tumour was confined to one ovary. The patients were divided into FSS and radical surgery groups. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was used to balance variables between the two groups. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare the difference in disease-free survival (DFS). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to find risk factors of DFS. Univariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess risk factors of pregnancy.

RESULTS

In total, 107 patients were included, of whom 54 (50.5%) women underwent FSS and 53 (49.5%) received radical surgery. After IPTW, a pseudo-population of 208 was determined and all of the covariates were well balanced. After a median follow-up time of 50 months (range 7-156 months), 10 patients experienced recurrence and two died. There was no significant difference in DFS between the two groups, both in unweighted (P = 0.969) or weighted cohorts (P = 0.792). In the weighted cohort, stage IC (P = 0.014), tumour diameter >8 cm (P = 0.003), incomplete staging surgery (P = 0.003) and no adjuvant chemotherapy (P < 0.001) were the four high-risk factors associated with a shorter DFS. Among 14 patients who had pregnancy desire, 11 (78.6%) women conceived successfully; the live birth rate was 76.9%. In univariate analysis, only adjuvant chemotherapy (P = 0.009) was associated with infertility.

CONCLUSIONS

On the premise of complete staging surgery, FSS is safe and feasible in early stage MSCSTs with satisfactory reproductive outcomes.

Super-Assembled Multi-Level Asymmetric Mesochannels for Coupled Accelerated Dual-Ion Selective Transport

Asymmetric nanofluidic devices hold great potential in energy conversion applications. However, most of the existing asymmetric nanofluidic devices remain a single-level asymmetric structure and a single-ion selective layer, which results in weak ion selectivity and limited energy conversion efficiency. Herein, a multi-level asymmetric mesoporous carbon/anodized aluminum/mesoporous silica (MC/AAO/MS) nanofluidic device with abundant and ordered mesochannels is constructed from super-assembly strategy. The resultant MC/AAO/MS exhibits diode-like ion transport and outstanding ion storage-release performance. Importantly, MC/AAO/MS couples the MC and MS dual-ion selective layers, which ensures a high ionic conductance and evidently enhances the cation selectivity. Thereby, the MC/AAO/MS demonstrates ascendant salinity gradient energy conversion performance. The power density and conversion efficiency can reach up to 5.37 W m^-2 and 32.79%, respectively. Noteworthy, a good energy conversion performance of 63 mW m^-2 can still be achieved upon high working area, outperforming 300% of the performance of MC/AAO and MS/AAO single-level asymmetric nanochannels. Theoretical calculation further verifies that the multi-level asymmetric structure and dual-ion selective transport are the reason for the enhanced cation selectivity and energy conversion efficiency. This work opens a new avenue for constructing multi-level asymmetric structured nanofluidic devices for various applications.

Alginate Oligosaccharides Prevent Dextran-Sulfate-Sodium-Induced Ulcerative Colitis via Enhancing Intestinal Barrier Function and Modulating Gut Microbiota

Alginate oligosaccharides are degradation products of alginate and have attracted increasing attention due to their versatile biological functions. In the present study, C57BL/6 mice were used to assess the ameliorative effects and mechanisms of guluronate oligosaccharides (GAOS), mannuronic oligosaccharides (MAOS), and heterozygous alginate oligosaccharides (HAOS), which are the three alginate oligosaccharides of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis. The study showed that alginate oligosaccharides alleviated pathological histological damage by slowing down weight loss, inhibiting colonic length shortening, and reducing disease activity index (DAI) and histopathological scores. Alginate oligosaccharides modulated the colonic inflammatory response by reducing colonic MPO levels and downregulating the expression of IL-6 and IL-1β. Alginate oligosaccharides reduced intestinal permeability and reversed intestinal barrier damage by increasing the number of goblet cells, decreasing LPS levels, downregulating Bax protein levels, upregulating Bcl-2 protein levels, and enhancing the expression of the E-cadherin. Furthermore, alginate oligosaccharides modulated the composition of the gut microbiota and restored the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially acetate and butyrate. In conclusion, our study provides a scientific basis for the role of alginate oligosaccharides in relieving ulcerative colitis.

Controlled propulsion of micro/nanomotors: operational mechanisms, motion manipulation and potential biomedical applications

Inspired by natural mobile microorganisms, researchers have developed micro/nanomotors (MNMs) that can autonomously move by transducing different kinds of energies into kinetic energy. The rapid development of MNMs has created tremendous opportunities for biomedical fields including diagnostics, therapeutics, and theranostics. Although the great progress has been made in MNM research, at a fundamental level, the accepted propulsion mechanisms are still a controversial matter. In practical applications such as precision nanomedicine, the precise control of the motion, including the speed and directionality, of MNMs is also important, which makes advanced motion manipulation desirable. Very recently, diverse MNMs with different propulsion strategies, morphologies, sizes, porosities and chemical structures have been fabricated and applied for various uses. Herein, we thoroughly summarize the physical principles behind propulsion strategies, as well as the recent advances in motion manipulation methods and relevant biomedical applications of these MNMs. The current challenges in MNM research are also discussed. We hope this review can provide a bird's eye overview of the MNM research and inspire researchers to create novel and more powerful MNMs.

Temperature-Regulated Core Swelling and Asymmetric Shrinkage for Tunable Yolk@Shell Polydopamine@Mesoporous Silica Nanostructures

Facile and controllable synthesis of functional yolk@shell structured nanospheres with a tunable inner core ('yolk') and mesoporous shell is highly desirable, yet it remains a great challenge. Herein, xx developed a strategy based on temperature-regulated swelling and restricted asymmetric shrinkage of polydopamine (PDA) nanospheres, combined with heterogeneous interface self-assembly growth. This method allows a simple and versatile preparation of PDA@mesoporous silica (MS) nanospheres exhibiting tunable yolk@shell architectures and shell pore sizes. Through reaction temperature-regulated swelling degree and confined shrinkage of PDA nanospheres, the volume ratio of the hollow cavity that the PDA core occupies can easily be tuned from ca. 2/3 to ca. 1/2, then to ca. 2/5, finally to ca. 1/3. Owing to the presence of PDA with excellent photothermal conversion capacity, the PDA@MS nanocomposites with asymmetric yolk distributions can become a colloidal nanomotor propelled by near-infrared (NIR) light. Noteworthily, the PDA@MS with half PDA yolk and microcracks in silica shell reaches 2.18 µm² s^-1 of effective diffusion coefficient (De) in the presence of 1.0 W cm^-2 NIR light. This temperature-controlled swelling approach may provide new insight into the design and facile preparation of functional PDA-based yolk@shell structured nanocomposites for wide applications in biology and medicine.

Regulating the Coordination Environment of Mesopore-Confined Single Atoms from Metalloprotein-MOFs for Highly Efficient Biocatalysis

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit unparalleled atomic utilization and catalytic efficiency, yet it is challenging to modulate SACs with highly dispersed single-atoms, mesopores, and well-regulated coordination environment simultaneously and ultimately maximize their catalytic efficiency. Here, a generalized strategy to construct highly active ferric-centered SACs (Fe-SACs) is developed successfully via a biomineralization strategy that enables the homogeneous encapsulation of metalloproteins within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) followed by pyrolysis. The results demonstrate that the constructed metalloprotein-MOF-templated Fe-SACs achieve up to 23-fold and 47-fold higher activity compared to those using metal ions as the single-atom source and those with large mesopores induced by Zn evaporation, respectively, as well as up to a 25-fold and 1900-fold higher catalytic efficiency compared to natural enzymes and natural-enzyme-immobilized MOFs. Furthermore, this strategy can be generalized to a variety of metal-containing metalloproteins and enzymes. The enhanced catalytic activity of Fe-SACs benefits from the highly dispersed atoms, mesopores, as well as the regulated coordination environment of single-atom active sites induced by metalloproteins. Furthermore, the developed Fe-SACs act as an excellent and effective therapeutic platform for suppressing tumor cell growth. This work advances the development of highly efficient SACs using metalloproteins-MOFs as a template with diverse biotechnological applications.

Super-assembly of integrated gold magnetic assay with loop-mediated isothermal amplification for point-of-care testing

With the increasing global threat of various diseases and infections, it is essential to develop a fast, low-cost, and easy-to-use point-of-care testing (POCT) system for inspections at all levels of medical institutions and self-examination at home. In this work, gold magnetic nanoparticles (GMNPs) are used as the key material, and a rapid visual detection method is designed through integrating loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and lateral flow assay (LFA) biosensor for detecting a variety of analytes which includes whole blood, buccal swabs, and DNA. It is worth to note that the proposed method does not need DNA extraction. Furthermore, uracil DNA glycosylase (UDG) is employed to eliminate carrier contamination for preventing false positive results. The whole detection process can be finished within 25 min. The accuracy of detection is measured by assessing the polymorphisms of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T. The detection limit of the newly developed extraction-free detection system for MTHFR C677T is 0.16 ng/μL. A preliminary clinical study of the proposed method is carried out by analyzing 600 clinical samples (including 200 whole blood samples, 100 buccal swabs, and 300 genomic DNA samples). The results indicate that the proposed method is 100% consistent with the sequencing results which provides a new choice for POCT and shows a broad application prospect in all levels of medical clinics and at home.

Super-Assembled Chiral Mesostructured Heteromembranes for Smart and Sensitive Couple-Accelerated Enantioseparation

In the context of sustainable development, chirality, especially chiral drugs, has attracted great interest in the pharmaceutical industry, yet the smart and sensitive separation of enantiomers still presents a major scientific challenge. Herein, inspired by supramolecular templating via chiral transcription nanoparticles, an artificial chiral nanochannel membrane with asymmetric structure, porosity, and abundant chiral surface is fabricated for smart and sensitive enantiomer recognition and separation. Constructed from chiral transcript mesoporous silica (CMS) super-assembled on a porous anode alumina oxide (AAO) support, the obtained heterostructured chiral membrane (CMS/AAO) exhibits enhanced enantioseparation (approximately 170% compared to the supramolecular-templated nanoparticles) among a series of amino acids with various isoelectric points (PIs). Especially for amino acids with a PI greater than 7, the couple-accelerated enantioseparation (CAE) can be achieved for the first time. Further analysis using an osmotic energy conversion test and simulations based on the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations confirm that the heterostructure and charge polarity are the key to achieve chiral amino acids and ion separation. We expect this work will inspire the development of multifunctional membrane systems for more sustainable and energy-efficient enantioseparation.

The compound enzymatic hydrolysate of Neoporphyra haitanensis improved hyperglycemia and regulated the gut microbiome in high-fat diet-fed mice

We previously found that the combination of protease and a novel β-porphyranase Por16A_Wf may contribute to the deep-processing of laver. The purpose of the present study is to assess the hypoglycemic effect of the compound enzymatic hydrolysate (CEH) of Neoporphyra haitanensis. Thus, biochemical indexes related to diet-induced hyperglycemia were mainly detected using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, fluorescence quantitative PCR, and ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS). Then 16s rRNA gene sequencing was performed to analyze the effects of CEH on the gut microbiome in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. The results suggested that CEH reduced the blood glucose level and alleviated insulin resistance. Possibly because CEH repressed intestinal α-glucosidase activity, inhibiting key enzymes (G6Pase and PEPCK) related to hepatic gluconeogenesis, and increased the expression of the enzyme (GLUT4) involved in peripheral glucose uptake. As potential indicators of hyperglycemia, total bile acids in the feces were reversed to the control levels after CEH intervention. Particularly, CEH decreased the content of tauro-α-muricholic acid (TαMCA) and ω-muricholic acid (ωMCA). Furthermore, CEH promoted the proliferation of beneficial bacteria (e.g. Parabacteroides), which may play a role in glycemic control. CEH also regulated the KEGG pathways associated with glycometabolism, such as "fructose and mannose metabolism". In summary, CEH supplementation has favorable effects on improving glucose metabolism and regulating the gut microbiome in HFD-fed mice. CEH has potential to be applied in the development of functional foods.

Patient-Derived Organoid Model in the Prediction of Chemotherapeutic Drug Response in Colorectal Cancer

As an emerging technology in precision medicine, the patient-derived organoid (PDO) technology has been indicated to provide novel modalities to judge the sensitivity of individual tumors to cancer drugs. In this work, an in vitro model of colorectal cancer (CRC) was established using the PDO culture, and it is demonstrated that the PDO samples preserved, to a great extent, the histologic features and marker expression of the original tumor tissues. Subsequently, cancer drugs 5-FU, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan were selected and screened on five CRC PDO samples, while the patient-derived organoid xenograft (PDOX) model was applied for comparison. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn according to the IC₅₀ data from the PDO model and the relative tumor proliferation rate (T/C%) from PDOX. Interestingly, the area under the ROC curve was 0.84 (95% CI, 0.64-1.04, P value = 0.028), which suggested that the IC₅₀ of cancer drugs from the PDO model was strongly correlated with PDOX responses. In addition, the optimal sensitivity cutoff value for drug screening in CRC PDOs was identified at 10.35 μM, which could act as a reference value for efficacy evaluation of 5-FU, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan in the colorectal cancer drug screening. Since there are no unified criteria to judge the sensitivity of drugs in vitro, our work provides a method for establishing in vitro evaluation criteria via PDO and PDOX model using the patient tissues received from local hospitals, exhibiting potential in clinical cancer therapy and precision medicine.

Superassembly of Surface-Enriched Ru Nanoclusters from Trapping-Bonding Strategy for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through water splitting is a potential technology to realize the sustainable production of hydrogen, yet the tardy water dissociation and costly Pt-based catalysts inhibit its development. Here, a trapping-bonding strategy is proposed to realize the superassembly of surface-enriched Ru nanoclusters on a phytic acid modified nitrogen-doped carbon framework (denoted as NCPO-Ru NCs). The modified framework has a high affinity to metal cations and can trap plenty of Ru ions. The trapped Ru ions are mainly distributed on the surface of the framework and can form Ru nanoclusters at 50 °C with the synergistic effect of vacancies and phosphate groups. By adjusting the content of phytic acid, surface-enriched Ru nanoclusters with adjustable distribution and densities can be obtained. Benefiting from the adequate exposure of the active sites and dense distribution of ultrasmall Ru nanoclusters, the obtained NCPO-Ru NCs catalyst can effectively drive HER in alkaline electrolytes and show an activity (at overpotential of 50 mV) about 14.3 and 9.6 times higher than that of commercial Ru/C and Pt/C catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, the great performance in solar to hydrogen generation through water splitting provides more flexibility for wide applications of NCPO-Ru NCs.

General Synergistic Capture-Bonding Superassembly of Atomically Dispersed Catalysts on Micropore-Vacancy Frameworks

Atomically dispersed catalysts are a new type of material in the field of catalysis science, yet their large-scale synthesis under mild conditions remains challenging. Here, a general synergistic capture-bonding superassembly strategy to obtain atomically dispersed Pt (Ru, Au, Pd, Ir, and Rh)-based catalysts on micropore-vacancy frameworks at a mild temperature of 60 °C is reported. The precise capture via narrow pores and the stable bonding of vacancies not only simplify the synthesis process of atomically dispersed catalysts but also realize their large-scale preparation at mild temperature. The prepared atomically dispersed Pt-based catalyst possesses a promising electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution, showing an activity (at overpotential of 50 mV) about 21.4 and 20.8 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H₂SO₄, respectively. Besides, the extremely long operational stability of more than 100 h provides more potential for its practical application.

Soft Patch Interface-Oriented Superassembly of Complex Hollow Nanoarchitectures for Smart Dual-Responsive Nanospacecrafts

Meticulous surface patterning of nanoparticles with anisotropic patches as analogs of functional groups offers fascinating potential in many fields, particularly in controllable materials assembly. However, patchy colloids generally evolve into high-symmetry solid structures, mainly because the assembly interactions arise between patches via patch-to-patch recognition. Here, we report an assembly concept, that is, a soft patch, which enables selective and directional fusion of liquid droplets for producing highly asymmetrical hollow nanospacecrafts. Our approach enables precise control of hollow nanoparticle diameters by manipulating droplet fusion regions. By controlling the patch number, more orientations are accessible to droplet fusion, allowing for increased degrees of complexity of hollow self-assemblies. The versatility and curvature-selective growth of this strategy are demonstrated on three nonspherical nanoparticles, enabling the creation of highly asymmetric nanospacecrafts. By patterning Au-core Ag-shell nanorods, the nanospacecraft can be programmed in response to either H₂O₂ or near-infrared light, exhibiting dual-mode response behavior with a 208% increase in the diffusion coefficient in both modes compared with other nanoscale low-asymmetry active materials. Overall, these findings are a significant step toward designing new patch interactions for materials self-assembly for creating complex hollow colloids and functional nanodevices that are otherwise inaccessible.

Interfacial Superassembly of Light-Responsive Mechanism-Switchable Nanomotors with Tunable Mobility and Directionality

Mechanism-switchable nanomotors are expected to exhibit high adaptability and wide applicability. Herein, for the first time, we report a flask-shaped carbon@Pt@fatty-acid nanomotor with a light-induced switch between nonionic self-diffusiophoresis and bubble propulsion. This nanomotor is fabricated through superassembly of platinum nanoparticles on the surface of carbon nanobottles, and fatty acids are infused into the cavity of carbon nanobottles to serve as a light-sensitive switch. Such a nanomotor can be propelled via catalytic decomposition of H₂O₂ by platinum nanoparticles, exhibiting self-diffusiophoresis with opening-forward migration. Upon 980 nm laser irradiation, the fatty acids melt due to the photothermal effect and are released from the cavity, switching the dominant operational mechanism to bubble propulsion with bottom-forward migration. Compared with self-diffusiophoresis, bubble propulsion shows higher mobility and better directionality due to the hindered self-rotation. Simulation results further reveal that the confinement effect of the cavity, which facilitates the nucleation of nanobubbles, leads to the switch to bubble propulsion. This study offers an insight into the relationship between nanostructures, fundamental nanomotor operational mechanisms, and apparent propulsion performance, as well as provides a novel strategy for the regulation of movement, which is instructive for both the design and applications of nanomotors.

Interfacial Superassembly of Mesoporous Titania Nanopillar-Arrays/Alumina Oxide Heterochannels for Light- and pH-Responsive Smart Ion Transport

Stimuli-responsive nanochannels have attracted extensive attention in various fields owing to their precise regulation ability of ionic transportation. However, the poor controllability and functionality as well as responding to only one type of external stimulus still impede the development of the smart nanochannels. Here, we demonstrate a novel heterogeneous membrane composed of ordered mesoporous titania nanopillar-arrays/anodic aluminum oxide (MTI/AAO) using an interfacial superassembly strategy, which can achieve intelligent light and pH multimodulation ion transport. The MTI/AAO membranes are generated through the self-assembly of templates, followed by interfacial superassembly of micelles on AAO, and then the nanostructure and phase transformation of titania. The presence of the MTI layer with anatase crystal endows the heterogeneous membrane with an excellent light-responsive current density of 219.2 μA·cm^-2, which is much higher than that of a reported traditional light-responsive nanofluidic device. Furthermore, the MTI/AAO heterogeneous membranes with an asymmetric structure exhibit excellent rectification performance. Moreover, pH-regulated surface charge polarity leads to a reversal of current rectification polarity. This light and pH multiresponsive membrane realizes efficient, sensitive, and stable ion regulation, extending the traditional nanochannel from single modulation to smart multimodulation.

Super-assembly of freestanding graphene oxide-aramid fiber membrane with T-mode subnanochannels for sensitive ion transport

Biomimetic nacre-like membranes composed of two-dimensional lamellar sheets and one-dimensional nanofibers exhibit high mechanical strength and excellent stability. Thus, they show substantial application in the field of membrane science and water purification. However, the limited techniques for the assembly of two-dimensional lamellar membranes and one-dimensional nanofibers hamper their development and application. Herein, we developed a nacre-like and freestanding graphene oxide/aramid fiber membrane with abundant T-mode subnanochannels by introducing aramid fibers into graphene oxide interlamination via the super-assembly interaction between graphene oxide and aramid fibers. Benefiting from the presence of stable and adjustable sub-nanometer-size ion transport channels, the graphene oxide/aramid fiber composite membrane exhibited excellent mono/divalent ion selectivity of 3.51 (K⁺/Mg²⁺), which is superior to that of the pure graphene oxide membrane. The experimental results suggest that the mono/divalent ion selectivity is ascribed to the subnanochannels in the graphene oxide/aramid fiber composite membrane, electrostatic repulsion interaction and strong interaction between the divalent metal ion and carboxyl groups. Moreover, the composite membrane exhibited remarkable charge selectivity with a K⁺/Cl^- ratio of up to ∼158, indicating that this graphene oxide/aramid fiber composite membrane has great potential for application in energy conversion. This study provides an avenue to prepare freestanding and nacre-like composite membranes with abundant T-mode ion transport channels for ion recognition and energy conversion, which also shows great application prospects in the field of membrane science and water purification.

Kinetics-Controlled Super-Assembly of Asymmetric Porous and Hollow Carbon Nanoparticles as Light-Sensitive Smart Nanovehicles

The rational design and controllable synthesis of hollow nanoparticles with both a mesoporous shell and an asymmetric architecture are crucially desired yet still significant challenges. In this work, a kinetics-controlled interfacial super-assembly strategy is developed, which is capable of preparing asymmetric porous and hollow carbon (APHC) nanoparticles through the precise regulation of polymerization and assembly rates of two kinds of precursors. In this method, Janus resin and silica hybrid (RSH) nanoparticles are first fabricated through the kinetics-controlled competitive nucleation and assembly of two precursors. Specifically, silica nanoparticles are initially formed, and the resin nanoparticles are subsequently formed on one side of the silica nanoparticles, followed by the co-assembly of silica and resin on the other side of the silica nanoparticles. The APHC nanoparticles are finally obtained via high-temperature carbonization of RSH nanoparticles and elimination of silica. The erratic asymmetrical, hierarchical porous and hollow structure and excellent photothermal performance under 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) light endow the APHC nanoparticles with the ability to serve as fuel-free nanomotors with NIR-light-driven propulsion. Upon illumination by NIR light, the photothermal effect of the APHC shell causes both self-thermophoresis and jet driving forces, which propel the APHC nanomotor. Furthermore, with the assistance of phase change materials, such APHC nanoparticles can be employed as smart vehicles that can achieve on-demand release of drugs with a 980 nm NIR laser. As a proof of concept, we apply this APHC-based therapeutic system in cancer treatment, which shows improved anticancer performance due to the synergy of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy. In brief, this kinetics-controlled approach may put forward new insight into the design and synthesis of functional materials with unique structures, properties, and applications by adjusting the assembly rates of multiple precursors in a reaction system.

Interfacial Assembly of Nanowire Arrays toward Carbonaceous Mesoporous Nanorods and Superstructures

Synthesis of anisotropic carbonaceous nano- and micro-materials with well-ordered mesoporous structures has attracted increasing attention for a broad scope of applications. Although hard-templating method has been widely employed, overcoming the viscous forces to prepare anisotropic mesoporous materials is particularly challenging via the universal soft-templating method, especially from sustainable biomass as a carbon resource. Herein, the synthesis of biomass-derived nanowire-arrays based mesoporous nanorods and teeth-like superstructures is reported, through a simple and straightforward polyelectrolyte assisted soft-templating hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) approach. A surface energy induced interfacial assembly mechanism with the synergetic interactions between micelles, nanowire, nanorods, and polyelectrolyte is proposed. The polyelectrolyte acts not only as a stabilizer to decrease the surface energy of cylindrical micelles, nanowires and nanorods, but also as a structure-directing agent to regulate the oriented attachment and anisotropic assembly of micelles, nanowires, and nanorods. After a calcination treatment, the carbon nanorod and teeth-like superstructure are successfully coupled with Ru to directly produce supported catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction, exhibiting much better performance than the isotropic nanospheres based catalyst. This HTC approach will open up new avenues for the synthesis of anisotropic materials with various morphologies and dimensions, expanding the palette of materials selection for many applications.

Core-Shell Structured Micro-Nanomotors: Construction, Shell Functionalization, Applications, and Perspectives

The successful integration of well-designed micro-nanomotors (MNMs) with diverse functional systems, such as, living systems, remote actuation systems, intelligent sensors, and sensing systems, offers many opportunities to not only endow them with diverse functionalization interfaces but also bring augmented or new properties in a wide variety of applications. Core-shell structured MNM systems have been considered to play an important role in a wide range of applications as they provide a platform to integrate multiple complementary components via decoration, encapsulation, or functionalization into a single functional system, being able to protect the active species from harsh environments, and bring improved propulsion performance, stability, non-toxicity, multi-functionality, and dispersibility, etc., which are not easily available from the isolated components. More importantly, the hetero-interfaces between individual components within a core-shell structure might give rise to boosted or new physiochemical properties. This review will bring together these key aspects of the core-shell structured MNMs, ranging from advanced protocols, enhanced/novel functionalities arising from diverse functional shells, to integrated core-shell structured MNMs for diverse applications. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of core-shell structured MNMs are discussed in term of synthesis, functions, propulsions, and applications.

Interfacially Super-Assembled Tyramine-Modified Mesoporous Silica-Alumina Oxide Heterochannels for Label-Free Tyrosinase Detection

Tyrosinase (TYR) is a multifunctional copper-containing enzyme that plays a critical role in the biosynthetic pathway of melanin. Thus, the detection of TYR activity possesses vast importance from clinical diagnosis to the food industry. However, most TYR detection methods are expensive, complicated, and time-consuming. Herein, a functional nanofluidic heterochannel composed of an ultrathin tyramine-modified mesoporous silica layer (Tyr-MS) and alumina oxide (AAO) arrays is constructed by an interfacial super-assembly method. The heterochannel with plenty of enzyme catalytic sites for TYR provides the response of the ion current signal against TYR concentrations. Introducing enzymatic reaction paves the way for the heterochannel to achieve label-free, selective, specific detection of TYR. Notably, a highly sensitive detection of TYR with a limit of 2 U mL^-1 was obtained by optimizing the modified conditions. Detailed investigations and theoretical calculations further reveal the mechanism for the detection performance. This work provides a simple, low-cost, quick response, and label-free platform based on functional nanofluidic devices for enzyme-sensing technologies.

Interfacially Super-Assembled Benzimidazole Derivative-Based Mesoporous Silica Nanoprobe for Sensitive Copper (II) Detection and Biosensing in Living Cells

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) functionalized with benzimidazole-derived fluorescent molecules (DHBM) are fabricated via a feasible interfacial superassembly strategy for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Cu²⁺ . DHBM-MSN exhibits an obvious quenching effect on Cu²⁺ in aqueous solutions, and the detection limit can be as low as 7.69×10^-8  M. The DHBM-MSN solid-state sensor has good recyclability, and the silica framework can simultaneously improve the photostability of DHBM. Two mesoporous silica nanoparticles with different morphologies were specially designed to verify that nanocarriers with different morphologies do not affect the specific detectionability. The detection mechanism of the fluorescent probe was systematically elucidated by combining experimental results and density function theory calculations. Moreover, the detection system was successfully applied to detect Cu²⁺ in bovine serum, juice, and live cells. These results indicate that the DHBM-MSN fluorescent sensor holds great potential in practical and biomedical applications.

Super-assembled silica nanoprobes for intracellular Zn(II) sensing and reperfusion injury treatment through in situ MOF crystallization

The production of excess free zinc ions (Zn²⁺) in cells has been identified as an important cause of cell injury or apoptosis after ischemia reperfusion. Thus, developing a nanosystem with multiple therapeutic functions to significantly eliminate multiple cell injury factors is of great interest. Here, a super-assembled nanosystem consisting of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) surface-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) encapsulating 2-methylimidazole (2MI) and a Zn²⁺ probe (PZn) was fabricated. The 2MI-P@MSN nanoassemblies showed a "turn-on" fluorescence signal at 476 nm toward zinc ions due to the presence of PZn. Besides, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) could be assembled on the site intracellularly after 2MI chelating with free zinc ions. The experimental results revealed that 2MI-P@MSN exhibited excellent biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity, and was able to provide satisfactory protection to OGD/R-treated cells based on zinc ion adsorption and the antioxidant effect of ZIF-8, which could effectively improve the survival rate of reperfusion injury cells from 52% to 73%. Notably, selective and quantitative sensing of Zn²⁺ was successfully carried out in the cells. This strategy highlights the potential of the detection, absorption and assembly of excess zinc ions simultaneously for cell therapy, which provides a promising therapeutic method for ischemic stroke, oxidative damage and diseases associated with zinc ion accumulation.
