Comparison of virus-neutralizing and virus-specific ELISA antibody responses among bovine neonates differentially primed and boosted against bovine coronavirus

Objective

This study addressed the current gap in knowledge of neonatal prime-boost immune responses for the control of bovine coronavirus (BCoV) respiratory disease in weaning-age beef cattle.

Animals

Study 1 and Study 2 had 33 and 22 commercial cross neonatal beef calves, respectively.

Procedures

Study 1 compared BCoV-neutralizing antibody concentrations of control calves with 3 groups of calves differentially vaccinated with mucosal and/or systemic BCoV modified live virus (MLV) vaccines. Study 2 compared specific and neutralizing antibody concentrations among mucosally BCoV primed groups of calves that were differentially systemically boosted.

Results

In Study 1, calves that were mucosally primed and systemically boosted had higher BCoV-neutralizing antibody concentrations than the control group at weaning. In Study 2, boosting mucosally primed calves by injecting inactivated or MLV vaccine resulted in anamnestic BCoV-specific antibody responses at weaning.

Conclusion

Neonatal mucosal priming and systemic boosting resulted in anamnestic BCoV antibody responses at weaning.

Clinical relevance

Prime-boost vaccination should be considered for control of BCoV respiratory disease.

Inferring transmission routes for foot-and-mouth disease virus within a cattle herd using approximate Bayesian computation

To control an outbreak of an infectious disease it is essential to understand the different routes of transmission and how they contribute to the overall spread of the pathogen. With this information, policy makers can choose the most efficient methods of detection and control during an outbreak. Here we assess the contributions of direct contact and environmental contamination to the transmission of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in a cattle herd using an individual-based model that includes both routes. Model parameters are inferred using approximate Bayesian computation with sequential Monte Carlo sampling (ABC-SMC) applied to data from transmission experiments and the 2007 epidemic in Great Britain. This demonstrates that the parameters derived from transmission experiments are applicable to outbreaks in the field, at least for closely related strains. Under the assumptions made in the model we show that environmental transmission likely contributes a majority of infections within a herd during an outbreak, although there is a lot of variation between simulated outbreaks. The accumulation of environmental contamination not only causes infections within a farm, but also has the potential to spread between farms via fomites. We also demonstrate the importance and effectiveness of rapid detection of infected farms in reducing transmission between farms, whether via direct contact or the environment.

Hybrid Allosteric Modulators of M1 Muscarinic Receptors Enhance Acetylcholine Efficacy and Decrease Locomotor Activity and Turning Behaviors in Zebrafish

Allosteric modulation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChR) has been identified as a potential strategy for regulating cholinergic signaling in the treatment of various neurological disorders. Most positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of mAChR enhance agonist affinity and potency, while very few PAMs selectively enhance G-protein coupling efficacy (e.g., amiodarone). The key structural features of amiodarone responsible for enhancement of mAChR efficacy were examined in CHO cells expressing M1 receptors. Subsequent incorporation of these structural features into previously identified allosteric modulators of potency (i.e., n-benzyl isatins) generated hybrid ligands that demonstrated similar or better enhancement of mAChR efficacy, lower in vivo toxicity, and higher allosteric binding affinity relative to amiodarone. Notable hybrid ligands include 8a and 8b which respectively demonstrated the strongest binding affinity and the most robust enhancement of mAChR efficacy as calculated from an allosteric operational model. Amiodarone derivatives and hybrid ligands were additionally screened in wildtype zebrafish (Danio rerio) to provide preliminary in vivo toxicity data as well as to observe effects on locomotor and turning behaviors relative to other mAChR PAMs. Several compounds, including 8a and 8c, reduced locomotor activity and increased measures of turning behaviors in zebrafish, suggesting that allosteric modulation of muscarinic receptor efficacy might be useful in the treatment of repetitive behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neuropsychiatric disorders.

Single-molecular diffusivity and long jumps of large organic molecules: CoPc on Ag(100)

Energy dissipation and the transfer rate of adsorbed molecules do not only determine the rates of chemical reactions but are also a key factor that often dictates the growth of organic thin films. Here, we present a study of the surface dynamical motion of cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) on Ag(100) in reciprocal space based on the helium spin-echo technique in comparison with previous scanning tunnelling microscopy studies. It is found that the activation energy for lateral diffusion changes from 150 meV at 45-50 K to ≈100 meV at 250-350 K, and that the process goes from exclusively single jumps at low temperatures to predominantly long jumps at high temperatures. We thus illustrate that while the general diffusion mechanism remains similar, upon comparing the diffusion process over widely divergent time scales, indeed different jump distributions and a decrease of the effective diffusion barrier are found. Hence a precise molecular-level understanding of dynamical processes and thin film formation requires following the dynamics over the entire temperature scale relevant to the process. Furthermore, we determine the diffusion coefficient and the atomic-scale friction of CoPc and establish that the molecular motion on Ag(100) corresponds to a low friction scenario as a consequence of the additional molecular degrees of freedom.

Evaluating patient perspectives of endovascular created arteriovenous fistulas for dialysis access (EndoAVF)

BACKGROUND

Patient reported experience measures are contemporary quality indicators that focus on evaluation of healthcare delivery processes. While surgical arteriovenous fistulas (otherAVF) are preferred for haemodialysis vascular access, fears about surgery and complications often result in refusal/delays. A new technique of endovascular arteriovenous fistula creation (EndoAVF) has been developed and as part of it's ongoing introduction into our unit, the patient perspective was felt critical to its evaluation. The Vascular Access Questionnaire (VAQ) provides a mechanism for identifying and scoring perceptions in this setting.

METHOD

Patients who had previously undergone EndoAVF formation were approached to undertake the VAQ as part of a service evaluation of their experience. In addition to the components of the VAQ, data questions relating to the patient's perception of their access were gathered. Results were compared with a matched historical cohort of surgically created fistulas (otherAVF) patients.

RESULTS

Patient satisfaction and self-reported ease of use with EndoAVF were high. Overall VAQ scores were similar between the EndoAVF and the surgically created cohort. Functionally, there was no significant difference in perception of their fistula by patients, irrespective of them being created surgically or radiologically.

CONCLUSION

Although numbers in this report are small limiting exploration of preserved inherent heterogeneity, we provide a useful initial patient reported experience and perspectives on comparative functional use of radiologically and surgically created AVFs. As real world experience gathers, future larger cohorts with adequate sampling may allow exploration of patient reported experiences and outcome measures.

Optometrist to Operation: Patients' Perspective on the Innovative Use of Quick Response (QR) Code-Linked Patient Information Video on Cataract Surgery

Background This study aimed to explore patients' subjective utility for a patient information video (PIV) on cataract surgery and analyse the use of a quick response (QR) code as a mode of delivery of the PIV. Methods A total of 500 patients were included in the study. All patients were given a paper form of the patient information leaflet (PIL) as the standard of care (SoC) in addition to a digital QR code to access a supplementary PIV. The questionnaire explored the patients' understanding of cataracts, the risks and benefits of cataract surgery, and their experience accessing and using the QR code. Results A total of 321 responses were collected (64% response rate). The majority were female (55%), with a mean age of 75 years. Among these, 69% (n = 222/321) managed to watch the video. A statistically significant association was reported between prior experience with QR codes and the ability to watch the video (p<0.001). The most common reason for not watching the video was no device (n=54/99, 54%). Ninety-one percent of the patients who watched the video expressed a desire for additional healthcare videos in the future. Overall, most patients (n=170/222, 76%) acknowledged that the PIV was easier to understand when compared to paper-format information, with a minority of patients reporting the PIV missing information that was covered on paper (n=2/222). Conclusions The provision of PIV supplementation as a part of the cataract surgery referral pathway is an innovative method of providing patient information in a more interactive way, with positive feedback from patients.

Editorial: Clinical Education Research and Dental Public Health

The central premise of Dental Public Health (DPH) is striving to change the oral health of the nation for the better and as Leo Buscaglia, the 19th century historian, elegantly stated; 'Change is the end result of all true learning'. The two primary goals of DPH; promoting oral health and preventing oral disease, have at their very heart the education of the general public and patients. Similarly, in seeking to recruit, train and retain an effective dental workforce, with a focus on oral health-related quality of life improvements, close attention to the education of those practitioners is imperative.

SARS coronavirus 2-reactive antibodies in bovine colostrum

Objective

To determine if bovine colostrum and sera have antibodies that react with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Animals

Dairy and beef cattle from North America and Europe, sampled before and after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Procedures

Indirect ELISAs using whole bovine coronavirus (BCoV) and SARS-CoV-2; whole SARS-CoV-2 Spike 1, Spike 2, and nucleocapsid proteins; and SARS-CoV-2-specific nucleocapsid peptide as antigens. Virus neutralization assay for BCoV. Surrogate virus neutralization assay for SARS-CoV-2.

Results

Antibodies reactive to BCoV were highly prevalent in samples collected from cattle before and after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Antibodies reactive with SARS-CoV-2 were present in the same samples, and apparently increased in prevalence after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. These antibodies had variable reactivity with the spike and nucleocapsid proteins of SARS-CoV-2 but were apparently not specific for SARS-CoV-2.

Conclusions

Bovine coronavirus continues to be endemic in cattle populations, as indicated by the high prevalence of antibodies to the virus in colostrum and serum samples. Also, the prevalent antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in bovine samples, before and after the pandemic, are likely the result of responses to epitopes on the spike and nucleocapsid proteins that are shared between the 2 betacoronaviruses. Cross-reactive antibodies in bovine colostrum could be examined for prophylactic or therapeutic effects on SARS-CoV-2 infections in humans.

Comparative efficacy of modified-live and inactivated vaccines in boosting disease-sparing responses to bovine viral diarrhea virus challenge in neonatally mucosally primed weanling beef calves

Objective

This study compares immune and clinical responses of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV)-maternal antibody (MatAb)-positive beef calves primed with intranasal modified-live virus vaccine (MLV) and differentially boosted with a systemic MLV or an inactivated vaccine (KV).

Animal

Eighteen commercial Black Angus steers.

Procedure

Calves were mucosally primed at ~24 h of age with an MLV and boosted by injection of a MLV (IN-MLV) or inactivated vaccine (IN-KV) at an average age of 54 d. Challenge occurred at weaning with a virulent non-cytopathic BVDV-2 strain, 24515.

Results

Clinically, the IN-KV group had a longer duration of fever, leukopenia, and viremia, whereas the IN-MLV group had greater BVDV Types-1 and -2 heterospecific antibody responses.

Conclusion

Altogether, these data indicated that systemic MLV boosting resulted in a more robust protection to BVDV Type-2 challenge at weaning.

Clinical relevance

Mucosal prime-boosting of neonatal calves provided protection against BVDV Type-2 challenge at weaning.

Assessing the effectiveness of environmental sampling for surveillance of foot-and-mouth disease virus in a cattle herd

The survival of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in the environment provides an opportunity for indirect transmission, both within and between farms. However it also presents the possibility of surveillance and detection via environmental sampling. This study assesses the effectiveness of environmental sampling strategies in the event of an outbreak, using a previous model for transmission of FMDV in a cattle herd that had been parameterized using data from transmission experiments and outbreaks. We show that environmental sampling can be an effective means of detecting FMDV in a herd, but it requires multiple samples to be taken on multiple occasions. In addition, environmental sampling can potentially detect FMDV in a herd more quickly than clinical inspection. For example, taking 10 samples every 3 days results in a mean time to detection of 6 days, which is lower than the mean time to detection estimated for the 2001 UK epidemic (8 days). We also show how environmental sampling could be used in a herd considered to be at risk as an alternative to pre-emptive culling. However, because of the time taken for virus to accumulate at the start of an outbreak, a reasonable level of confidence (&gt; 99%) that an at-risk herd is indeed free from infection is unlikely to be achieved in less than 1 week.

Molecular Detection of Neglected Tropical Diseases: The Case for Automated Near-Point-of-Care Diagnosis of Leishmaniasis

Neglected tropical diseases affect those in poorer nations disproportionately across the globe. One example of these, leishmaniasis, is a debilitating and potentially fatal parasitic infection. Molecular detection of this disease can provide accurate and fast diagnosis, and with near point-of-care technologies, detection can be provided in many health-care settings. Traditionally, the perceived limitations to such detection methods have hindered their provision to resource-limited nations, but new technologies and techniques are helping to overcome these perceptions. The current pandemic offers an opportunity to maintain and develop further advances, ensuring molecular diagnostics are accessible to all.

Comparative evaluation of a new frugal binocular indirect ophthalmoscope

OBJECTIVES

We compare the optical quality and design characteristic a new low cost solar powered binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO), Holo, to Keeler BIO.

METHODS

Twenty-four participants each examined 10 simulation eyes using both the Holo and the Keeler BIO with a 30-diopter condensing lens. Number of Lea symbols printed on the retina of simulation eyes seen and time taken to identify them was recorded. Stereoacuity of 12 participants was tested while using the BIOs. Using 7-point Likert scale, participants gave feedback on design characteristic of both BIOs.

RESULTS

There was no statistical difference in number of Lea symbols correctly identified (15.63/20 for Holo vs. 15/20 for Keeler BIO, p = 0.366, paired t test) or time taken to correctly identify each symbol (Holo 0.39 s faster; 95% confidence interval -2.24 to 3.03 s, p = 0.763) using each device. 12 out of 12 participants achieved stereoacuity of 60 arcsec using the Holo while with the Keeler BIO 11 achieved 60 arcsec and one 90 arcsec. There was no statistically significant difference in the scores for clarity of view, quality of illumination, field of view, binocularity, eye strain and robustness between the two devices. The Holo, scored higher for ease of use (6.5 vs. 6, p = 0.00488, Wilcoxon signed-rank test), comfort of wear (6 vs. 5, p = 0.000337) and portability (7 vs. 6, p = 0.000148).

CONCLUSION

The Holo has the potential to be a clinically useful yet affordable diagnostic tool suitable for the first time of equipping eye care workers in low resource settings with a BIO at volume.

The immediate effect of water treadmill walking exercise on overground in-hand walking locomotion in the horse

Water treadmill (WT) exercise is frequently used for training/rehabilitation of horses but the effect of WT exercise on short-term movement patterns is yet to be investigated. The objective of this study was to determine the immediate effect of WT exercise on overground limb and back kinematics. Six horses (mean ± standard deviation., age 15±6.5 years, height 164±2 cm and weight 539±37 kg) walked twice in a straight line, led from both sides, before and after a standardised WT exercise session (19 min duration; speed 1.6 m/s; water depths: 0.0/7.5/21.0/32.0/47.0 cm) on a flat concrete surface. Horses wore five inertial-measurement-units to determine poll/wither/pelvic displacement, and 10 anatomical markers to determine fetlock/carpal/tarsal joint angles at specific stride points. Degree of mediolateral tarsal oscillation during stance was graded. Wilcoxon-signed-rank tests were used to investigate differences between pre- and post-WT exercise for each variable. Post-WT exercise, there was a significant decrease in hindlimb fetlock extension at mid-stance compared with pre-WT exercise. No significant changes in movement patterns of the poll/withers/pelvis were detected post-WT exercise. In all horses there was greater mediolateral tarsal oscillation during the stance phase of the stride post-WT exercise, which could relate to muscle fatigue. The results suggest that a 19-min WT session has an effect on immediately-following overground in-hand walking locomotion patterns. Further work is required to determine the duration of this effect, and how different WT speeds and water depths affect locomotion patterns.

2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines

These guidelines are an update and extension of previous AAHA peer-reviewed canine vaccination guidelines published in 2017. Vaccination is a cornerstone of canine preventive healthcare and one of the most cost-effective ways of maintaining a dog's health, longevity, and quality of life. Canine vaccination also serves a public health function by forming a barrier against several zoonotic diseases affecting dogs and humans. Canine vaccines are broadly categorized as containing core and noncore immunizing antigens, with administration recommendations based on assessment of individual patient risk factors. The guidelines include a comprehensive table listing canine core and noncore vaccines and a recommended vaccination and revaccination schedule for each vaccine. The guidelines explain the relevance of different vaccine formulations, including those containing modified-live virus, inactivated, and recombinant immunizing agents. Factors that potentially affect vaccine efficacy are addressed, including the patient's prevaccination immune status and vaccine duration of immunity. Because animal shelters are one of the most challenging environments for prevention and control of infectious diseases, the guidelines also provide recommendations for vaccination of dogs presented at or housed in animal shelters, including the appropriate response to an infectious disease outbreak in the shelter setting. The guidelines explain how practitioners can interpret a patient's serological status, including maternally derived antibody titers, as indicators of immune status and suitability for vaccination. Other topics covered include factors associated with postvaccination adverse events, vaccine storage and handling to preserve product efficacy, interpreting product labeling to ensure proper vaccine use, and using client education and healthcare team training to raise awareness of the importance of vaccinations.

Evaluate the safety and efficacy of dura sealant patch in reducing cerebrospinal fluid leakage following elective cranial surgery (ENCASE II): study protocol for a randomized, two-arm, multicenter trial

BACKGROUND

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage is a frequent and challenging complication in neurosurgery, especially in the posterior fossa, with a prevalence of 8%. It is associated with substantial morbidity and increased healthcare costs. A novel dural sealant patch (LIQOSEAL) was developed for watertight dural closure. The objective of this study is to clinically assess the safety and effectiveness of LIQOSEAL as a means of reducing intra- as well as postoperative CSF leakage in patients undergoing elective posterior fossa intradural surgery with a dural closure procedure compared to the best currently available dural sealants.

METHODS

We will conduct a two-arm, randomized controlled, multicenter study with a 90-day follow-up. A total of 228 patients will be enrolled in 19 sites, of which 114 will receive LIQOSEAL and 114 an FDA-approved PEG sealant. The composite primary endpoint is defined as intraoperative CSF leakage at PEEP 20 cm H₂O, percutaneous CSF leakage within 90 days of, wound infection within 90 days of or pseudomeningocele of more than 20cc on MRI or requiring intervention. We hypothesize that the primary endpoint will not be reached by more than 10 patients (9%) in the investigational arm, which will demonstrate non-inferiority of LIQOSEAL compared to control.

DISCUSSION

This trial will evaluate whether LIQOSEAL is non-inferior to control as a means of reducing CSF leakage and safety TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04086550 . Registered on 11 September 2019.

Genealogy of an in-vivo passaged isolate of western Canadian bovine respiratory syncytial virus

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is a primary respiratory pathogen in calves. Clinical infection with this pathogen has been experimentally modelled to assess vaccine efficacy using a field isolate (Asquith) of BRSV that has been sequentially passaged in vivo in neonatal calves to maintain virulence. The objective of this retrospective cumulative analysis of passages over approximately 20 years was to determine if there have been any changes in the viral genome of this isolate because of this process. Sequence analyses indicated that the Asquith isolate placed genetically in a clade comprising US and some European isolates and a recently described Chinese BRSV isolate (DQ). Furthermore, there were rare changes in bases over time in the N, G, and F gene segments examined when comparing among different passages ranging from 1996 to 2019. These results indicated the absence of significant mutations in the absence of significant adaptive immunological pressure.

Evaluation of prognostic risk models for postoperative pulmonary complications in adult patients undergoing major abdominal surgery: a systematic review and international external validation cohort study

BACKGROUND

Stratifying risk of postoperative pulmonary complications after major abdominal surgery allows clinicians to modify risk through targeted interventions and enhanced monitoring. In this study, we aimed to identify and validate prognostic models against a new consensus definition of postoperative pulmonary complications.

METHODS

We did a systematic review and international external validation cohort study. The systematic review was done in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We searched MEDLINE and Embase on March 1, 2020, for articles published in English that reported on risk prediction models for postoperative pulmonary complications following abdominal surgery. External validation of existing models was done within a prospective international cohort study of adult patients (≥18 years) undergoing major abdominal surgery. Data were collected between Jan 1, 2019, and April 30, 2019, in the UK, Ireland, and Australia. Discriminative ability and prognostic accuracy summary statistics were compared between models for the 30-day postoperative pulmonary complication rate as defined by the Standardised Endpoints in Perioperative Medicine Core Outcome Measures in Perioperative and Anaesthetic Care (StEP-COMPAC). Model performance was compared using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROCC).

FINDINGS

In total, we identified 2903 records from our literature search; of which, 2514 (86·6%) unique records were screened, 121 (4·8%) of 2514 full texts were assessed for eligibility, and 29 unique prognostic models were identified. Nine (31·0%) of 29 models had score development reported only, 19 (65·5%) had undergone internal validation, and only four (13·8%) had been externally validated. Data to validate six eligible models were collected in the international external validation cohort study. Data from 11 591 patients were available, with an overall postoperative pulmonary complication rate of 7·8% (n=903). None of the six models showed good discrimination (defined as AUROCC ≥0·70) for identifying postoperative pulmonary complications, with the Assess Respiratory Risk in Surgical Patients in Catalonia score showing the best discrimination (AUROCC 0·700 [95% CI 0·683-0·717]).

INTERPRETATION

In the pre-COVID-19 pandemic data, variability in the risk of pulmonary complications (StEP-COMPAC definition) following major abdominal surgery was poorly described by existing prognostication tools. To improve surgical safety during the COVID-19 pandemic recovery and beyond, novel risk stratification tools are required.

POS1510-HPR IDENTIFYING THEORY-DRIVEN THERAPEUTIC CONTENT FOR A SMARTPHONE APP FOR THE SELF-MANAGEMENT OF SJOGREN’S SYNDROME

Background

Technology-supported self-management of long-term conditions (e.g., through the use of smartphone apps) provides easily accessible support. However, currently there are no systematically developed, evidence-based smartphone apps for Sjogren’s Syndrome. We took an agile approach to developing such an app: instead of starting “from scratch” we deemed it more efficient and scientifically sound to digitalise relevant components from existing, evidence-based interventions for the symptoms of SS.

Objectives

The present study was desk research, which aimed to deconstruct interventions and resources down to units of theory-driven therapeutic content, to then select from, for the inclusion in an app for the self-management of SS.

Methods

We used deductive and inductive content analysis, to identify behaviour change techniques (BCTs)[1] and behaviour change methods (BCMs)[2]. The materials consisted of published fatigue, pain and sleep interventions (e.g. [3] and [4]), as well as private-facing clinician notes and public facing resources on self-management from Versus Arthritis and the UK NHS’s CRESTA fatigue clinic.

Results

We found 38 active ingredients from the BCT Taxonomy and the BCM intervention mapping approach frameworks, of which at least 14 were overlapping in function. Importantly we noted that BCTs and BCMs were formulated in various ways pertaining to how the interventions should be delivered (form of delivery-FoD) [5]. Further qualitative analysis revealed 6 themes relating to FoD. The theme Interactivity involved presenting information in ways that would involve the reader in actively responding to it in various ways. The theme Reflection was about engaging the recipient in in-depth consideration of their own experience with symptoms and self-management processes. The theme Validation encompassed all the ways in which the illness and management experience was socialised and normalised to remove stigma and sense of isolation. The theme Treatment Rationale was about providing an a-priory transparent, sound, and compelling justification for the self-management actions required from recipients. The theme Discourse pertained to how information was being communicated, e.g., with language that is warm, simple, assertive, etc. Finally, the theme Approaches was about the therapeutic origins of the active ingredients, e.g. Second and Third Wave CBT. These themes indicate that meaningful therapeutic content is missing from commonly used theoretical frameworks for the development of interventions.

Conclusion

Our findings indicate that meaningful therapeutic content is missing from commonly used theoretical frameworks for the development of interventions.

Interventions should not just include BCTs and methods, but also active ingredients pertaining to how these techniques and methods are delivered, i.e., active ingredients relating to FoD. Reflection deserves particular attention in self-management, as it is unclear empirically in apps what is the most effective way to produce the most useful psychological and behavioural insight, and for whom. FoD is a component of intervention development that requires systematising and the present findings can contribute to such efforts.

Remotely delivered cognitive-behavioural and personalized exercise interventions to lessen the impact of fatigue: a qualitative evaluation

Objectives

Fatigue can be a disabling symptom of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. LIFT (Lessening the Impact of Fatigue in inflammatory rheumatic diseases: a randomized Trial) is a randomized trial of remotely delivered cognitive-behavioural approach or personalized exercise programme interventions, compared with usual care. The aim of this nested qualitative study was to evaluate participants’ experiences of taking part in the intervention, including their ideas about future service delivery.

Methods

Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with a subgroup of LIFT participants to discuss their views and experiences of the interventions.

Results

Forty-three participants (30 women) from six sites who had participated in the cognitive-behavioural approach (n = 22) or personalized exercise programme (n = 21) interventions took part. Five themes were identified in the thematic analysis. In the theme ‘not a miracle cure, but a way to better manage fatigue’, LIFT could not cure fatigue; however, most felt better able to manage after participating. Participants valued ‘building a therapeutic relationship’ with the same therapist throughout the intervention. In ‘structure, self-monitoring and being accountable’, participants liked the inclusion of goal-setting techniques and were motivated by reporting back to the therapist.

After taking part in the interventions, participants felt ‘better equipped to cope with fatigue’; more confident and empowered. Lastly, participants shared ideas for ‘a tailored programme delivered remotely’, including follow-up sessions, video calling, and group-based sessions for social support.

Conclusion

Many participants engaged with the LIFT interventions and reported benefits of taking part. This suggests an important future role for the remote delivery of fatigue self-management.

Simple and statistically sound recommendations for analysing physical theories

Physical theories that depend on many parameters or are tested against data from many different experiments pose unique challenges to statistical inference. Many models in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology fall into one or both of these categories. These issues are often sidestepped with statistically unsound ad hoc methods, involving intersection of parameter intervals estimated by multiple experiments, and random or grid sampling of model parameters. Whilst these methods are easy to apply, they exhibit pathologies even in low-dimensional parameter spaces, and quickly become problematic to use and interpret in higher dimensions. In this article we give clear guidance for going beyond these procedures, suggesting where possible simple methods for performing statistically sound inference, and recommendations of readily-available software tools and standards that can assist in doing so. Our aim is to provide any physicists lacking comprehensive statistical training with recommendations for reaching correct scientific conclusions, with only a modest increase in analysis burden. Our examples can be reproduced with the code publicly available at Zenodo.

Recent trends in the use of social media in parasitology and the application of alternative metrics

In recent times, the use of social media for the dissemination of “news and views” in parasitology has increased in popularity. News, Twitter and Blogs have emerged as commonplace vehicles in the knowledge dissemination and transfer process. Alternative metrics (“altmetrics”), based on social media mentions have been proposed as a measure of societal impact, although firm evidence for this relationship is yet to be found. Nevertheless, increasing amounts of data on “altmetrics” are being analysed to identify the nature of the unknown impact that social media is generating. Here, we examine the recent, and increasing use of social media in the field of parasitology and the relationship of “altmetrics” with more traditional bibliometric indicators, such as article citations and journal metrics. The analyses document the rise and dominance of Twitter as the main form of social media occurring in the discipline of parasitology and note the contribution to this trend of Twitter bots that automatically tweet about publications. We also report on the use of the social referencing platform Mendeley and its correlation to article citations; Mendeley reader numbers are now considered to provide firm evidence on the early impact of research. Finally, we consider the Twitter profile of 31 journals publishing parasitology research articles (by volume of papers published); we show that 13 journals are associated with prolific Twitter activity about parasitology. We hope this study will stimulate not only the continued and responsible use of social media to disseminate knowledge about parasitology for the greater good, but also encourage others to further investigate the impact and benefits that altmetrics may bring to this discipline.

Axion dark matter: What is it and why now?

The axion has emerged in recent years as a leading particle candidate to provide the mysterious dark matter in the cosmos, as we review here for a general scientific audience. We describe first the historical roots of the axion in the Standard Model of particle physics and the problem of charge-parity invariance of the strong nuclear force. We then discuss how the axion emerges as a dark matter candidate and how it is produced in the early universe. The symmetry properties of the axion dictate the form of its interactions with ordinary matter. Astrophysical considerations restrict the particle mass and interaction strengths to a limited range, which facilitates the planning of experiments to detect the axion. A companion review discusses the exciting prospect that the axion could be detected in the near term in the laboratory.

A predictive model and a field study on heterogeneous slug distribution in arable fields arising from density dependent movement

Factors and processes determining heterogeneous (‘patchy’) population distributions in natural environments have long been a major focus in ecology. Existing theoretical approaches proved to be successful in explaining vegetation patterns. In the case of animal populations, existing theories are at most conceptual: they may suggest a qualitative explanation but largely fail to explain patchiness quantitatively. We aim to bridge this knowledge gap. We present a new mechanism of self-organized formation of a patchy spatial population distribution. A factor that was under-appreciated by pattern formation theories is animal sociability, which may result in density dependent movement behaviour. Our approach was inspired by a recent project on movement and distribution of slugs in arable fields. The project discovered a strongly heterogeneous slug distribution and a specific density dependent individual movement. In this paper, we bring these two findings together. We develop a model of density dependent animal movement to account for the switch in the movement behaviour when the local population density exceeds a certain threshold. The model is fully parameterized using the field data. We then show that the model produces spatial patterns with properties closely resembling those observed in the field, in particular to exhibit similar values of the aggregation index.

Prospective sensitivities of atom interferometers to gravitational waves and ultralight dark matter

We survey the prospective sensitivities of terrestrial and space-borne atom interferometers to gravitational waves generated by cosmological and astrophysical sources, and to ultralight dark matter. We discuss the backgrounds from gravitational gradient noise in terrestrial detectors, and also binary pulsar and asteroid backgrounds in space-borne detectors. We compare the sensitivities of LIGO and LISA with those of the 100 m and 1 km stages of the AION terrestrial AI project, as well as two options for the proposed AEDGE AI space mission with cold atom clouds either inside or outside the spacecraft, considering as possible sources the mergers of black holes and neutron stars, supernovae, phase transitions in the early Universe, cosmic strings and quantum fluctuations in the early Universe that could have generated primordial black holes. We also review the capabilities of AION and AEDGE for detecting coherent waves of ultralight scalar dark matter. A mathematical determination of foveal attachment in primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment when obscured by bullous retina

In primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), the foveal attachment is an important prognostic factors for post-operative vision. When the fovea is obscured by the RRD, its attachment status is considered uncertain. Using a model of the reduced emmetropic and − 10 dioptre myopic eye and the physical properties of the detached retina, we aimed to mathematically ascertain if it is clinically possible for the fovea to be attached while it is obscured by the primary RRD. With the patient upright, a primary RRD due to a 12 o’clock break directly above the fovea was considered. However, in vivo the RRD makes an acute angle with the retinal pigment epithelium and the corrugation of the retina in RRD shortens the retina. When these in vivo constraints are considered, in both of the above situations the fovea will be detached. If the fovea is obscured by an RRD, the fovea is very likely to be detached. In idiomatic terms, if the fovea cannot be seen, the fovea cannot see. This is an important clinical diagnosis for appropriate triage of the patient.

Observation of diffuse scattering in scanning helium microscopy

By studying well defined geometries (microspheres) in scanning helium microscopy (SHeM) the default scattering distribution for technological surfaces in SHeM is found to be diffuse and approximately cosine.

Arrhythmia patterns in patients with COVID-19 infection during and post hospitalization detected via a patch-based mobile cardiac telemetry system

Background

Coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is the cause of the current world-wide pandemic. Cardiovascular complications occur in 20–30% of patients with COVID-19 infection including myocardial injury and arrhythmias. Current understanding of specific arrhythmia type and frequency is limited. In response to COVID-19 pandemic and overwhelmed hospital critical care and telemetry recourses, patch-based cardiac monitoring system received emergency Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for inpatient monitoring. A patch-based cardiac telemetry system has been shown to be useful for patient management during the COVID-19 pandemic and provides detailed analysis of cardiac rhythms.

Purpose

To analyze arrhythmia type and frequency in patients with COVID-19 infection, identifying arrhythmia patterns over time during hospitalization and after discharge.

Methods

A prospective cohort study during the COVID-19 pandemic was performed. We included patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection who had a patch-based mobile telemetry device placed for cardiac monitoring. A quantitative analysis including type, frequency and duration of detected arrhythmias was performed at the end of the monitoring period.

Results

A total of 103 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 diagnosis underwent monitoring. Quantitative reports for 59 patients were available for analysis, among those 59% were males, median age 65 (IQR 56–76) yrs. Mean wear time was 6.8±5.0 days. Arrhythmias were detected in 72.9% of patients. Majority of arrhythmias were SVT (59.3% of patients) and AF (22.0%). Episodes of AF duration >30 min were detected in 12 patients. New onset AF was noted in 15.0% of patients and was significantly associated with age (OR 1.4 for 5 yrs difference; 95% CI 1.01–2.05). Brady arrhythmias (2nd degree, 3rd degree AV bock, pause≥3 seconds) were seen in 18.7% of patients. Arrhythmias were consistently detected throughout the monitoring period in 52.9%-89.5% of patients daily (Figure 1). In 9 patients who were discharged with continued patch monitoring, 3 patients (33.3%) had arrhythmic events during their outpatient monitoring period.

Conclusion

A majority of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection had arrhythmias detected by patch cardiac monitor. Arrhythmias were observed throughout hospitalization with a consistent daily frequency. Patients continued to exhibit cardiac arrhythmias after hospital discharge of a type similar to that seen during hospitalization. New onset AF often occurred and was associated with older age. Inpatient application of a patch cardiac telemetry with continued monitoring as outpatient is feasible and effective in detecting occult arrhythmias in patients with COVID-19 infection.

Long-term increases in pathogen seroprevalence in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) influenced by climate change

The influence of climate change on wildlife disease dynamics is a burgeoning conservation and human health issue, but few long-term studies empirically link climate to pathogen prevalence. Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are vulnerable to the negative impacts of sea ice loss as a result of accelerated Arctic warming. While studies have associated changes in polar bear body condition, reproductive output, survival, and abundance to reductions in sea ice, no long-term studies have documented the impact of climate change on pathogen exposure. We examined 425 serum samples from 381 adult polar bears, collected in western Hudson Bay (WH), Canada, for antibodies to selected pathogens across three time periods: 1986-1989 (n = 157), 1995-1998 (n = 159) and 2015-2017 (n = 109). We ran serological assays for antibodies to seven pathogens: Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Trichinella spp., Francisella tularensis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, canine morbillivirus (CDV) and canine parvovirus (CPV). Seroprevalence of zoonotic parasites (T. gondii, Trichinella spp.) and bacterial pathogens (F. tularensis, B. bronchiseptica) increased significantly between 1986-1989 and 1995-1998, ranging from +6.2% to +20.8%, with T. gondii continuing to increase into 2015-2017 (+25.8% overall). Seroprevalence of viral pathogens (CDV, CPV) and N. caninum did not change with time. Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence was higher following wetter summers, while seroprevalences of Trichinella spp. and B. bronchiseptica were positively correlated with hotter summers. Seroprevalence of antibodies to F. tularensis increased following years polar bears spent more days on land, and polar bears previously captured in human settlements were more likely to be seropositive for Trichinella spp. As the Arctic has warmed due to climate change, zoonotic pathogen exposure in WH polar bears has increased, driven by numerous altered ecosystem pathways.

Acute eosinophilic pneumonia: a fatal reaction to ado-trastuzumab

Ado-trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) is a monoclonal antibody drug conjugate approved for the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancers. Presented here is a case report of a patient who developed fatal pulmonary toxicity in the form of acute eosinophilic pneumonia while undergoing treatment with T-DM1. Prior to beginning T-DM1 therapy, this patient had been treated with two HER2-targeted agents (trastuzumab, pertuzumab) per National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. This case represents a novel presentation of toxicity associated with T-DM1 while perhaps demonstrating additive toxicity associated with multiple lines of HER2 targeted therapies.

An online Sexual Health and Rehabilitation eClinic (TrueNTH SHAReClinic) for prostate cancer patients: a feasibility study

Purpose

The primary objective was to determine the feasibility of implementing the TrueNTH SHAReClinic as a pan-Canadian sexual health and rehabilitation intervention for patients treated for localized prostate cancer.

Methods

The feasibility study was designed to evaluate the accessibility and acceptability of the intervention. Participants from five institutions across Canada were enrolled to attend one pre-treatment and five follow-up online clinic visits over 1 year following their prostate cancer (PC) treatment.

Results

Sixty-five patients were enrolled in the intervention. Website analytics revealed that 71% completed the intervention in its entirety, including the educational modules, with an additional 10% completing more than half of the intervention. Five thousand eighty-three views of the educational modules were made along with 654 views of the health library items. Over 1500 messages were exchanged between participants and their sexual health coaches. At 12 months, the intervention received an overall average participant rating of 4.1 out of 5 on a single item satisfaction measure.

Conclusion

Results support the TrueNTH SHAReClinic as highly acceptable to participants as defined by intervention adherence and engagement. The TrueNTH SHAReClinic demonstrated promise for being a feasible and potentially resource-efficient approach to effectively improving the sexual well-being of patients after PC treatment.

All in the family: A comparative look at coronaviruses

Coronaviruses, members of the order Nidovirales, the largest and most complex of the positive-stranded RNA viruses, have been recognized as important causes of disease in veterinary medicine for nearly a century. In contrast, in human medicine, especially until the recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, they were unimportant viruses associated with the common cold. This is a brief comparative review of the biology of coronaviral infections emphasizing the commonalities among the various members of the family and considering how the veterinary experience with coronaviruses can inform the response to SARS-CoV-2. Coronaviruses are perhaps best viewed as mutation machines whose genetic sequences can readily change through genetic drift, recombination, and deletions from a large genome. However, to be of clinical concern, variants must have the perfect set of amino acids in the S protein receptor binding domain and in their replication-mediating nonstructural proteins. Extensive experience with veterinary coronaviral vaccines suggests that optimal clinical immunity is a tandem of mucosal and systemic responses induced by a combination of mucosal and parenteral vaccines.

Bordetella bronchiseptica-reactive antibodies in Canadian polar bears

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a promiscuous bacterium that infects a variety of species but has not been reported in free-ranging polar bears (Ursus maritimus). Sera from 385 polar bears from the western Hudson Bay region, 1986 to 2017, were tested for reactivity to B. bronchiseptica with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays using anti-canine IgG and Streptococcus protein G as secondary reagents. Sera from bears had variable reactivity to B. bronchiseptica antigens, and there was no difference among bears that had a history of coming near the town of Churchill, Manitoba, and bears that did not. Although the sources of exposure were not determined, equivalent results in both groups suggest that potential exposure to humans (aside from handling during sampling) and their animals (dogs) was not an important co-factor in sero-positivity to B. bronchiseptica.

Low-energy electron ionization mass spectrometer for efficient detection of low mass species

The design of a high-efficiency mass spectrometer is described, aimed at residual gas detection of low mass species using low-energy electron impact, with particular applications in helium atom microscopy and atomic or molecular scattering. The instrument consists of an extended ionization volume, where electrons emitted from a hot filament are confined using a solenoidal magnetic field to give a high ionization probability. Electron space charge is used to confine and extract the gas ions formed, which are then passed through a magnetic sector mass filter before reaching an ion counter. The design and implementation of each of the major components are described in turn, followed by the overall performance of the detector in terms of mass separation, detection efficiency, time response, and background count rates. The linearity of response with emission current and magnetic field is discussed. The detection efficiency for helium is very high, reaching as much as 0.5%, with a time constant of (198 ± 6) ms and a background signal equivalent to an incoming helium flux of (8.7 ± 0.2) × 10⁶ s^-1.

Plasmodium falciparum Histidine-Rich Protein 2 and 3 Gene Deletions in Strains from Nigeria, Sudan, and South Sudan

Deletion of histidine-rich protein genes pfhrp2/3 in Plasmodium falciparum causes infections to go undetected by HRP2-based malaria rapid diagnostic tests. We analyzed P. falciparum malaria cases imported to Australia (n = 210, collected 2010–2018) for their pfhrp2/3 status. We detected gene deletions in patients from 12 of 25 countries. We found >10% pfhrp2-deletion levels in those from Nigeria (13.3%, n = 30), Sudan (11.2%, n = 39), and South Sudan (17.7%, n = 17) and low levels of pfhrp3 deletion from Sudan (3.6%) and South Sudan (5.9%). No parasites with pfhrp2/3 double deletions were detected. Microsatellite typing of parasites from Nigeria, Sudan, and South Sudan revealed low relatedness among gene-deleted parasites, indicating independent emergences. The gene deletion proportions signify a risk of false-negative HRP2-RDT results. This study’s findings warrant surveillance to determine whether the prevalence of gene-deleted parasites justifies switching malaria rapid diagnostic tests in Nigeria, Sudan, and South Sudan.

OP0281 EXCESS GIANT CELL ARTERITIS CASES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH PEAKS IN COVID-19 PREVALENCE

Background:

Immediately following the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of giant cell arteritis (GCA) diagnoses noticeably increased at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, UK. Furthermore, there was an increase in the proportion of patients with visual complications [1]. The finding supports the viral hypothesis of GCA aetiopathogenesis as previously described [2]. This not only has ramifications for understanding the underlying disease mechanisms in GCA but also has implications for the provision of local GCA services which may have already be affected by the pandemic.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to estimate the incidence of giant cell arteritis during the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 – 2021 and compare it to 2019 data. Given that there have now been two distinct peaks of COVID-19 as reflected by hospital admissions of COVID-19-positive patients this has allowed us to investigate if there is a temporal relationship between the prevalence of COVID-19 and the incidence of GCA.

Methods:

The incidence of GCA was calculated by assessing emailed referrals to the GCA service and the hospital electronic medical records to identity positive cases from 2019 to the current date. Local COVID-19 prevalence was estimated by measuring the number of hospital beds taken up by COVID-19 positive patients, available publicly in a UK Government COVID-19 dataset [3].

Results:

There were 61 (95% Poisson distribution confidence interval [CI] 47 - 78) probable or definite GCA diagnoses made in 2020 compared to 28 (CI 19 – 40) in 2019 (Figure 1). This is an excess of 33 cases in 2020, or an increase in 118%. Given that 41% of the hospital’s catchment population is over 50, this equates to an annual incidence rate of 13.7 per 100,000 in 2019 and 29.8 per 100,000 in 2020. This compares to a previously estimated regional incidence rate of 21.6 per 100,000 for the South West of the UK [4].

A peak in COVID-19-positive inpatients was seen on 10th April 2020 with a corresponding peak of GCA diagnoses on 29th May 2020, giving a lag period of approximately 6 weeks between these peaks (Figure 1).

Conclusion:

The incidence of GCA in Bath was significantly increased in 2020 compared to 2019. This may be the result of the widespread infection of the local population with the COVID-19 virus as a precipitating factor. Possible mechanisms include, but are not limited to, endothelial disruption by the virus, immune system priming towards T helper cell type 1 (Th1) cellular immunity and/or activation of the monocyte-macrophage system. More work is currently underway to assess the causal relationship between the two diseases.

There was a lag period of 6 weeks between the peak during the first wave of the pandemic and the rise in GCA cases. We shall be closely monitoring the number of referrals that follow the current wave of the pandemic.

Meta-epidemiological study of publication integrity, and quality of conduct and reporting of randomized trials included in a systematic review of low back pain

OBJECTIVE

To comprehensively describe the quality of conduct, reporting, and publication integrity characteristics for all trials included in a large Cochrane review, comparing those published by presumed predatory publishers with those published by nonpredatory publishers.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional meta-epidemiological study.

STUDY SELECTION

Two hundred seventy-nine studies (25,704 participants) eligible for the recent update of the "Exercise therapy for chronic low back pain" Cochrane review were included.

DATA EXTRACTION

Study and manuscript characteristics, including predatory publication status and other quality and integrity characteristics were extracted along with treatment effect.

RESULTS

Nine percent of trials included were in presumed predatory publications; 12% in the period since 2010. We found frequency of other concerning characteristics to range from low (eg, plagiarism, 5%) to common (eg, lack of evidence of trial registration or protocol publication [75%]; insufficient sample size [84%]) in included studies. Studies published by presumed predatory publishers consistently had inferior conduct, reporting and publication integrity characteristics. Presumed predatory publication was associated with missing conflict of interest statement (OR 7.6, 95% CI 3.0-19.1), inadequate follow-up duration (OR 11.2, 95% CI 3.7-33.7), incomplete study methods (OR 12.1, 95% CI 2.8-52.2) and baseline reporting (OR 4.3, 95% CI 1.6-11.7), and high risk of bias (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.2-6.3). All (100%) presumed predatory publications were missing trial registrations (vs. 72%) and had inadequate sample sizes (vs. 82%). Trials published in presumed predatory journals did not appear to have inflated effect sizes.

CONCLUSIONS

Predatory publishers pose a distinct challenge to the consumption and synthesis of randomized controlled trials. More work is needed in other clinical areas to understand the potential impact of randomized controlled trials published in predatory publications, and as a result, the potential impact on evidence from systematic reviews that include these studies.

Motion of water monomers reveals a kinetic barrier to ice nucleation on graphene

The interfacial behaviour of water remains a central question to fields as diverse as protein folding, friction and ice formation. While the properties of water at interfaces differ from those in the bulk, major gaps in our knowledge limit our understanding at the molecular level. Information concerning the microscopic motion of water comes mostly from computation and, on an atomic scale, is largely unexplored by experiment. Here, we provide a detailed insight into the behaviour of water monomers on a graphene surface. The motion displays remarkably strong signatures of cooperative behaviour due to repulsive forces between the monomers, enhancing the monomer lifetime ( ≈ 3 s at 125 K) in a free-gas phase that precedes the nucleation of ice islands and, in turn, provides the opportunity for our experiments to be performed. Our results give a molecular perspective on a kinetic barrier to ice nucleation, providing routes to understand and control the processes involved in ice formation.

Ultrafast Diffusion at the Onset of Growth: O/Ru(0001)

Nanoscopic clustering in a 2D disordered phase is observed for oxygen on Ru(0001) at low coverages and high temperatures. We study the coexistence of quasistatic clusters (with a characteristic length of ∼9  Å) and highly mobile atomic oxygen which diffuses between the energy-inequivalent, threefold hollow sites of the substrate. We determine a surprisingly low activation energy for diffusion of 385±20  meV. The minimum of the O-O interadsorbate potential appears to be at lower separations than previously reported.

Alkali metal adsorption on metal surfaces: new insights from new tools

The adsorption of sodium on Ru(0001) is studied using ³He spin-echo spectroscopy (HeSE), molecular dynamics simulations (MD) and density functional theory (DFT). In the multi-layer regime, an analysis of helium reflectivity, gives an electron-phonon coupling constant of λ = 0.64 ± 0.06. At sub-monolayer coverage, DFT calculations show that the preferred adsorption site changes from hollow site to top site as the supercell increases and the effective coverage, θ, is reduced from 0.25 to 0.0625 adsorbates per substrate atom. Energy barriers and adsorption geometries taken from DFT are used in molecular dynamics calculations to generate simulated data sets for comparison with measurements. We introduce a new Bayesian method of analysis that compares measurement and model directly, without assuming analytic lineshapes. The value of adsorbate-substrate energy exchange rate (friction) in the MD simulation is the sole variable parameter. Experimental data at a coverage θ = 0.028 compares well with the low-coverage DFT result, giving an effective activation barrier E_eff = 46 ± 4 meV with a friction γ = 0.3 ps^-1. Better fits to the data can be achieved by including additional variable parameters, but in all cases, the mechanism of diffusion is predominantly on a Bravais lattice, suggesting a single adsorption site in the unit cell, despite the close packed geometry.

Inter-adsorbate forces and coherent scattering in helium spin-echo experiments

In studies of dynamical systems, helium atoms scatter coherently from an ensemble of adsorbates as they diffuse on the surface. The results give information on the co-operative behaviour of interacting adsorbates and thus include the effects of both adsorbate-substrate and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions. Here, we discuss a method to disentangle the effects of interactions between adsorbates from those with the substrate. The result gives an approximation to observations that would be obtained if the scattering was incoherent. Information from the experiment can therefore be used to distinguish more clearly between long-range inter-adsorbate forces and the short range effects arising from the local lattice potential and associated thermal excitations. The method is discussed in the context of a system with strong inter-adsorbate interactions, sodium atoms diffusing on a copper (111) surface.

Passive transfer of colostral leukocytes: A benefit/risk analysis

Passive immunity is a requirement for survival of conventionally reared domestic animals. Maternal antibody is recognized as the primary effector mechanism of protection of the neonate. There is interest, especially in bovine medicine, in the maternal leukocytes that are also transferred in colostrum. These leukocytes are thought to somehow aid in the development of the neonatal immune system and participate in cellular immune reactions in the neonate, although the means by which this is accomplished is unknown. The purpose of this article is to review the immunology of this maternal/neonatal interaction, and on that basis, evaluate the practical benefits and risks of assuring passive transfer of colostral leukocytes.

Cosmic String Interpretation of NANOGrav Pulsar Timing Data

Pulsar timing data used to provide upper limits on a possible stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). However, the NANOGrav Collaboration has recently reported strong evidence for a stochastic common-spectrum process, which we interpret as a SGWB in the framework of cosmic strings. The possible NANOGrav signal would correspond to a string tension Gμ∈(4×10^{-11},10^{-10}) at the 68% confidence level, with a different frequency dependence from supermassive black hole mergers. The SGWB produced by cosmic strings with such values of Gμ would be beyond the reach of LIGO, but could be measured by other planned and proposed detectors such as SKA, LISA, TianQin, AION-1 km, AEDGE, Einstein Telescope, and Cosmic Explorer.
