A Janus carbaporphyrin pseudo-dimer

Carbaporphyrin dimers, investigated for their distinctive electronic structures and exceptional properties, have predominantly consisted of systems containing identical subunits. This study addresses the associated knowledge gap by focusing on asymmetric carbaporphyrin dimers with Janus-like characteristics. The synthesis of a Janus-type carbaporphyrin pseudo-dimer 5 is presented. It displays antiaromatic characteristics on the fused side and nonaromatic behavior on the unfused side. A newly synthesized tetraphenylene (TPE) linked bis-dibenzihomoporphyrin 8 and a previously reported dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC) linked bis-dicarbacorrole 9 were prepared as controls. Comprehensive analyses, including 1H NMR spectral studies, single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations, validate the mixed character of 5. A further feature of the Janus pseudo-dimer 5 is that it may be transformed into a heterometallic complex, with one side coordinating a Cu(III) center and the other stabilizing a BODIPY complex. This disparate regiochemical reactivity underscores the potential of carbaporphyrin dimers as versatile frameworks, with electronic features and site-specific coordination chemistry controlled through asymmetry. These findings position carbaporphyrin dimers as promising candidates for advances in electronic structure studies, coordination chemistry, materials science, and beyond.

Columnar liquid crystals based on antiaromatic expanded porphyrins

Three naphthorosarins, antiaromatic expanded porphyrins bearing different meso substituents (NRos 1-3), designed to self-assemble into columnar liquid crystalline (LC) structures, were synthesized and characterized using polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as supporting computational calculations. The substituents were found to play a crucial role in modulating the LC behaviour.

High-nuclearity Luminescent Lanthanide Nanocages for Tumor Drug Delivery

There is an unmet need for easy-to-visualize drug carriers that can deliver therapeutic cargoes deep into solid tumors. Herein, we report the preparation of ultrasmall luminescent imine-based lanthanide nanocages, Eu60 and Tb60 (collectively Ln60 ), designed to encapsulate anticancer chemotherapeutics for tumor therapy. The as-prepared nanocages possess large cavities suitable for the encapsulation of doxorubicin (DOX), yielding DOX@Ln60 nanocages with diameters around 5 nm. DOX@Ln60 are efficiently internalized by breast cancer cells, allowing the cells to be visualized via the intrinsic luminescent property of Ln(III). Once internalized, the acidic intracellular microenvironment promotes imine bond cleavage and the release of the loaded DOX. DOX@Ln60 inhibits DNA replication and triggers tumor cell apoptosis. In a murine triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) model, DOX@Ln60 was found to inhibit tumor growth with negligible side effects on normal tissues. It proved more effective than various controls, including DOX and Ln60 . The present nanocages thus point the way to the development of precise nanomedicines for tumor imaging and therapy.

Theranostic Fluorescent Probes

The ability to gain spatiotemporal information, and in some cases achieve spatiotemporal control, in the context of drug delivery makes theranostic fluorescent probes an attractive and intensely investigated research topic. This interest is reflected in the steep rise in publications on the topic that have appeared over the past decade. Theranostic fluorescent probes, in their various incarnations, generally comprise a fluorophore linked to a masked drug, in which the drug is released as the result of certain stimuli, with both intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli being reported. This release is then signaled by the emergence of a fluorescent signal. Importantly, the use of appropriate fluorophores has enabled not only this emerging fluorescence as a spatiotemporal marker for drug delivery but also has provided modalities useful in photodynamic, photothermal, and sonodynamic therapeutic applications. In this review we highlight recent work on theranostic fluorescent probes with a particular focus on probes that are activated in tumor microenvironments. We also summarize efforts to develop probes for other applications, such as neurodegenerative diseases and antibacterials. This review celebrates the diversity of designs reported to date, from discrete small-molecule systems to nanomaterials. Our aim is to provide insights into the potential clinical impact of this still-emerging research direction.

Fluorinated Nonporous Adaptive Cages for the Efficient Removal of Perfluorooctanoic Acid from Aqueous Source Phases

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) accumulate in water resources and pose serious environmental and health threats due to their nonbiodegradable nature and long environmental persistence times. Strategies for the efficient removal of PFAS from contaminated water are needed to address this concern. Here, we report a fluorinated nonporous adaptive crystalline cage (F-Cage 2) that exploits electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and F-F interactions to achieve the efficient removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from aqueous source phases. F-Cage 2 exhibits a high second-order kobs value of approximately 441,000 g mg-1 h-1 for PFOA and a maximum PFOA adsorption capacity of 45 mg g-1. F-Cage 2 can decrease PFOA concentrations from 1500 to 6 ng L-1 through three rounds of flow-through purification, conducted at a flow rate of 40 mL h-1. Elimination of PFOA from PFOA-loaded F-Cage 2 is readily achieved by rinsing with a mixture of MeOH and saturated NaCl. Heating at 80 °C under vacuum then makes F-Cage 2 ready for reuse, as demonstrated across five successive uptake and release cycles. This work thus highlights the potential utility of suitably designed nonporous adaptive crystals as platforms for PFAS remediation.

Lutetium texaphyrin: A photocatalyst that triggers pyroptosis via biomolecular photoredox catalysis

Photon-controlled pyroptosis activation (PhotoPyro) is a promising technique for cancer immunotherapy due to its noninvasive nature, precise control, and ease of operation. Here, we report that biomolecular photoredox catalysis in cells might be an important mechanism underlying PhotoPyro. Our findings reveal that the photocatalyst lutetium texaphyrin (MLu) facilitates rapid and direct photoredox oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, and various amino acids, thereby triggering pyroptosis through the caspase 3/GSDME pathway. This mechanism is distinct from the well-established role of MLu as a photodynamic therapy sensitizer in cells. Two analogs of MLu, bearing different coordinated central metal cations, were also explored as controls. The first control, gadolinium texaphyrin (MGd), is a weak photocatalyst but generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) efficiently. The second control, manganese texaphyrin (MMn), is ineffective as both a photocatalyst and a ROS generator. Neither MGd nor MMn was found to trigger pyroptosis under the conditions where MLu was active. Even in the presence of a ROS scavenger, treating MDA-MB-231 cells with MLu at concentrations as low as 50 nM still allows for pyroptosis photo-activation. The present findings highlight how biomolecular photoredox catalysis could contribute to pyroptosis activation by mechanisms largely independent of ROS.

Targeted Cyclo[8]pyrrole-Based NIR-II Photoacoustic Tomography Probe for Suppression of Orthotopic Pancreatic Tumor Growth and Intra-abdominal Metastases

Pancreatic cancer is highly lethal. New diagnostic and treatment modalities are desperately needed. We report here that an expanded porphyrin, cyclo[8]pyrrole (CP), with a high extinction coefficient (89.16 L/g·cm) within the second near-infrared window (NIR-II), may be formulated with an αvβ3-specific targeting peptide, cyclic-Arg-Gly-Asp (cRGD), to form cRGD-CP nanoparticles (cRGD-CPNPs) with promising NIR-II photothermal (PT) therapeutic and photoacoustic (PA) imaging properties. Studies with a ring-array PA tomography system, coupled with analysis of control nanoparticles lacking a targeting element (CPNPs), revealed that cRGD conjugation promoted the delivery of the NPs through abnormal vessels around the tumor to the solid tumor core. This proved true in both subcutaneous and orthotopic pancreatic tumor mice models, as confirmed by immunofluorescent studies. In combination with NIR-II laser photoirradiation, the cRGD-CPNPs provided near-baseline tumor growth inhibition through PTT both in vitro and in vivo. Notably, the combination of the present cRGD-CPNPs and photoirradiation was found to inhibit intra-abdominal metastases in an orthotopic pancreatic tumor mouse model. The cRGD-CPNPs also displayed good biosafety profiles, as inferred from PA tomography, blood analyses, and H&E staining. They thus appear promising for use in combined PA imaging and PT therapeutic treatment of pancreatic cancer.

3D-Printed Porous Supramolecular Sorbents for Cobalt Recycling

Electronic waste recycling is a recognized global challenge that requires new strategies to bind and release critical materials selectively, such as cobalt present in lithium-ion batteries. To address this challenge, hierarchical 3D-printed porous polymer scaffolds bearing supramolecular receptors were prepared using vat photopolymerization and their cobalt binding profiles were examined as a function of matrix polarity. By combining high-resolution digital light processing (DLP) with polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS), functional acrylic copolymer networks with micrometer-level precision of geometry and nanometer-level pores were generated. Covalent integration of a methacrylate-functionalized bisdicyclohexyl acetamide (BDCA-MA) receptor enabled binding and release of cobalt(II) chloride (CoCl2) via a solvent polarity switch mechanism involving a change in solvent from ethanol to water. The present structures proved reusable as shown by sustained high binding efficiency over five bind and release cycles. This platform represents a "green" and energy conscious method for future electronic waste recycling.

Cyclo[2]pyridine[8]pyrrole: An Expanded Porphyrinoid with Three Closed-Shell Oxidation States

We report here an expanded porphyrinoid, cyclo[2]pyridine[8]pyrrole, 1, that can exist at three closed-shell oxidation levels. Macrocycle 1 was synthesized via the oxidative coupling of two open chain precursors and fully characterized by means of NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, MS, and X-ray crystallography. Reduction of the fully oxidized form (1, blue) with NaBH4 produced either the half-oxidized (2, teal) or fully reduced forms (3, pale yellow), depending on the amount of reducing agent used and the presence or absence of air. Reduced products 2 or 3 can be oxidized to 1 by various oxidants (quinones, FeCl3, and AgPF6). Macrocycle 1 also undergoes proton-coupled reductions with I-, Br-, Cl-, SO32-, or S2O32- in the presence of an acid. Certain thiol-containing compounds likewise reduce 1 to 2 or 3. This conversion is accompanied by a readily discernible color change, making cyclo[2]pyridine[8]pyrrole 1 able to differentiate biothiols, such as cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), and glutathione (GSH).

Phenylboronic Acid Functionalized Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Solid-State Supramolecular Electrolyte

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) suffer from the low ionic conductivity and poor capability of suppressing lithium (Li) dendrites, which limits their utility in the preparation of all solid-state Li-metal batteries (LMBs). It is reported here a flexible solid supramolecular electrolyte that incorporates a new anion capture agent, namely a phenylboronic acid functionalized calix[4]pyrrole (C4P), into a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix. The resulting solid-state supramolecular electrolyte demonstrates high ionic conductivity (1.9 × 10-3  S cm-1 at 60 °C) and a high Li+ transference number (t Li + ${t}_{{\mathrm{Li}}^{\mathrm{ + }}}$  = 0.70). Furthermore, the assembled Li|C4P-PEO-LiTFSI|LiFePO4 cell allows for stable cycling over 1200 cycles at 1 C at 60 °C, as well as good rate performance. The favorable performance of the C4P-PEO-LiTFSI SPE leads to suggest it can prove useful in the creation of high energy density solid-state LMBs.

Cyclopentadienyl capped thorium(IV) porphyrinoid complex

The reaction between Th(IV) dipyriamethyrin dichloride and sodium cyclopentadienyl (Cp) results in the formation of a cyclopentadienyl capped thorium dipyriamethyrin complex, which to our knowledge represents the first expanded porphyrin f-element Cp complex.

Nanographene-Fused Expanded Carbaporphyrin Tweezers

A nanographene-fused expanded carbaporphyrin (5) and its BF2 complex (6) were synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray structures revealed that 5 and 6 are connected by two hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) units and two dipyrromethene or BODIPY units, respectively. As prepared, 5 and 6 both show nonaromatic character with figure-of-eight carbaoctaphyrin (1.1.1.0.1.1.1.0) cores and adopt tweezers-like conformations characterized by a partially confined space between the two constituent HBC units. The distance between the HBC centers is >10 Å, while the dihedral angles between the two HBC planes are 30.5 and 35.2° for 5 and 6, respectively. The interactions between 5 and 6 and fullerene C60 were studied both in organic media and in the solid state. Proton NMR spectral titrations of 5 and 6 with C60 revealed a 1:1 binding mode for both macrocycles. In toluene-d8, the corresponding binding constants were determined to be 1141 ± 17 and 994 ± 10 M-1 for 5 and 6, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural analyses confirmed the formation of 1:1 fullerene inclusion complexes in the solid state. The C60 guests in both complexes are found within triangular pockets composed of two HBC units from the tweezers-like receptor most closely associated with the bound fullerene, as well as an HBC unit from an adjacent host. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements revealed subpicosecond ultrafast charge separation between 5 (and 6) and C60 in the complexes. To the best of our knowledge, the present report provides the first example wherein a nanographene building block is incorporated into the core of a porphyrinic framework.

Enhancing the Toughness and Strength of Polymers Using Mechanically Interlocked Hydrogen Bonds

The energy dissipative features of hydrogen bonds under conditions of mechanical strain have provided an ongoing incentive to explore hydrogen bonding units for the purpose of controlling and customizing the mechanical properties of polymeric materials. However, there remains a need for hydrogen bond units that (1) possess directionality, (2) provide selectivity, (3) dissipate energy effectively, and (4) can be incorporated readily into polymeric materials to regulate their mechanical properties. Here, we report mechanically interlocked hydrogen bond units that incorporate multiple hydrogen bonds within a [2]catenane structure. The conformational flexibility and associated spatial folding characteristics of the [2]catenane units allow for molecular scale motion under external stress, while the interlocked structure serves as a pivot that maintains the directionality and selectivity of the resultant hydrogen bonding units. When incorporated into polymers, these interlocked hydrogen bond motifs serve to strengthen and toughen the resulting materials. This study not only presents a novel hydrogen bond unit for creating polymeric materials with improved mechanical properties but also underscores the unique opportunities that mechanically interlocked hydrogen bond structures may provide across a diverse range of applications.

Resolution of Expanded Porphyrinoids: A Path to Persistent Chirality and Appealing Chiroptical Properties

Chirality is a fundamental characteristic of nature. Expanded porphyrinoids and their analogues offer an attractive platform for delving into the intricacies of chirality. Expanded porphyrinoids comprise pyrrolic macrocycles and related heterocyclic systems. As a class, expanded porphyrinoids are widely recognized for their flexible structural features, nontrivial coordination capabilities, and intriguing optical and electronic properties. With limited exceptions, their inherent conformational flexibility coupled with a low racemization barrier allows for the facile interchange between enantiomers. As a result, achieving the effective chiral resolution of individual enantiomers and the subsequent exploration of their chiroptical properties represents a significant challenge. This review summarizes strategies used to realize the chiral resolution of expanded porphyrinoids and the understanding of intrinsic chiroptical properties that has emerged from these separation efforts. It is our hope that this review will serve not only to codify our current understanding of chiral expanded porphyrinoids, but also inspire advances in the generalized area of chiral functional materials.

Diphenylpyrrole-Strapped Calix[4]pyrrole Extractant for the Fluoride and Chloride Anions

The anion binding features of diphenylpyrrole-strapped calix[4]pyrrole 1 have been investigated by means of 1 H NMR spectroscopy and ITC (isothermal titration calorimetry), as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Receptor 1 bearing an auxiliary pyrrolic NH donor and solubilizing phenyl groups on the strap was found to bind F- , Cl- , and Br- as their tetrabutylammonium salts with high affinity in DMSO-d6 . In addition, receptor 1 was found to extract the fluoride anion (as both its tetraethylammonium (TEA+ ) and tetrabutylammonium (TBA+ ) salts), as well as the chloride anion into chloroform-d from an aqueous source phase. Cation metathesis using TBAI or the use of a dual host approach involving crown ethers enabled receptor 1 to extract simple alkali metal fluoride or chloride salts from water. Quantitative binding of NaF by receptor 1 was observed in 20 % D2 O-DMSO-d6 allowing for the direct determination of the NaF concentration in an unknown sample.

Texaphyrin-Based Calcium Sensor for Multimodal Imaging

The ability to monitor intracellular calcium concentrations using fluorescent probes has led to important insights into biological signaling processes at the cellular level. An important challenge is to relate such measurements to broader patterns of signaling across fields of view that are inaccessible to optical techniques. To meet this need, we synthesized molecular probes that couple calcium-binding moieties to lanthanide texaphyrins, resulting in complexes endowed with a diverse complement of magnetic and photophysical properties. We show that the probes permit intracellular calcium levels to be assessed by fluorescence, photoacoustic, and magnetic resonance imaging modalities and that they are detectable by multimodal imaging in brain tissue. This work thus establishes a route for monitoring signaling processes over a range of spatial and temporal scales.

Hypoxia-Directed and Self-Immolative Theranostic Agent: Imaging and Treatment of Cancer and Bacterial Infections

The impact of bacteria on cancer progression and treatment is becoming increasingly recognized. Cancer-associated bacteria are linked to metastases, reduced efficacy, and survival challenges. In this study, we present a sensitive hypoxia-activated prodrug, NR-NO2, which comprises an antibiotic combined with a chemotherapeutic. This prodrug demonstrates rapid and robust fluorescence enhancement and exhibits potent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as tumor cells. Upon activation, NR-NO2 produces a distinct "fluorescence-on" signal, enabling real-time drug release monitoring. By leveraging elevated nitroreductase in cancer cells, NR-NO2 gives rise to heightened bacterial cytotoxicity while sparing normal cells. In A549 solid tumor-bearing mice, NR-NO2 selectively accumulated at tumor sites, displaying fluorescence signals under hypoxia superior to those of a corresponding prodrug-like control. These findings highlight the potential of NR-NO2 as a promising cancer therapy prodrug that benefits from targeted release, antibacterial impact, and imaging-based guidance.

Nickel(II) Phototheranostics: A Case Study in Photoactivated H2O2-Enhanced Immunotherapy

Phototheranostics have emerged as a promising subset of cancer theranostics owing to their potential to provide precise photoinduced diagnoses and therapeutic outcomes. However, the design of phototheranostics remains challenging due to the nature of tumors and their microenvironment, including limitations to the oxygen supply, high rates of recurrence and metastasis, and the immunosuppressive state of cancer cells. Here we report a dual-functional oxygen-independent phototheranostic agent, Ni-2, rationally designed to provide a near-infrared (NIR) photoactivated thermal- and hydroxyl radical (•OH)-enhanced photoimmunotherapeutic anticancer response. Under 880 nm laser irradiation, Ni-2 exhibited high photostability and excellent photoacoustic and photothermal effects with a photothermal conversion efficacy of 58.0%, as well as novel photoredox features that allowed the catalytic conversion of H2O2 to •OH upon photooxidation of Ni(II) to Ni(III). As a multifunctional photoagent, Ni-2 was found not only to inhibit tumor growth in a CT26 tumor-bearing mouse model but also to activate an immune response via a combination of photothermal- and H2O2-induced effects. When combined with an antiprogrammed death-ligand 1 (aPD-L1), Ni-2 treatment allowed for the suppression of distant tumor growth and cancer metastasis. Collectively, the present results provide support for the proposition that Ni-2 or its analogues could emerge as useful tools for photoimmunotherapy. They also highlight the potential of appropriately designed 3d transition metal complexes as "all- in-one" phototheranostics.

Deferasirox Derivatives: Ligands for the Lanthanide Series

Deferasirox is an FDA-approved iron chelator used in the treatment of iron toxicity. In this work, we report the use of several deferasirox derivatives as lanthanide chelators. Solid-state structural studies of three representative trivalent lanthanide cations, La(III), Eu(III), and Lu(III), revealed the formation of 2:2 complexes in the solid state. A 1:1 stoichiometry dominates in DMSO solution, with Ka values of 472 ± 14, 477 ± 11, and 496 ± 15 M-1 being obtained in the case of these three cations, respectively. Under the conditions of competitive precipitation in the presence of triethylamine, high selectivity (up to 80%) for lutetium(III) was observed in competition with La(III), Ce(III), and Eu(III). Theoretical calculations provided support for the observed selective crystallization.

Pillararene incorporated metal-organic frameworks for supramolecular recognition and selective separation

Crystalline frameworks containing incorporated flexible macrocycle units can afford new opportunities in molecular recognition and selective separation. However, such functionalized frameworks are difficult to prepare and challenging to characterize due to the flexible nature of macrocycles, which limits the development of macrocycle-based crystalline frameworks. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a set of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing pillar[5]arene units. The pillar[5]arene units were uniformly embedded in the periodic frameworks. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed an interpenetrated network that appears to hinder the rotation of the pillar[5]arene repeating units in the frameworks, and it therefore resulted in the successful determination of the precise pillar[5]arene host structure in a MOF crystal. These MOFs can recognize paraquat and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene in solution and selectively remove trace pyridine from toluene with relative ease. The work presented here represents a critical step towards the synthesis of macrocycle-incorporated crystalline frameworks with well-defined structures and functional utility.

Xanthene-Separated 24 π-Electron Antiaromatic Rosarin Dimer

Antiaromatic molecules have recently received attention because of their intrinsic properties, such as high reactivity and their narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps. Stacking of antiaromatic molecules has been predicted to induce three-dimensional aromaticity via frontier orbital interactions. Here, we report a covalently linked π-π stacked rosarin dimer that has been examined experimentally by steady-state absorption and transient absorption measurements and theoretically by quantum chemical calculations, including time-dependent density functional theory, anisotropy of induced current density, and nucleus-independent chemical shift calculations. Relative to the corresponding monomer, the dimer exhibits diminished antiaromaticity upon lowering the temperature to 77 K, a finding ascribed to intramolecular interactions between the macrocyclic rosarin subunits.

Orthogonally Engineered Albumin with Attenuated Macrophage Phagocytosis for the Targeted Visualization and Phototherapy of Liver Cancer

The five-year survival rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unsatisfactory. This reflects, in part, the paucity of effective methods that allow the target-specific diagnosis and therapy of HCC. Here, we report a strategy based on engineered human serum albumin (HSA) that permits the HCC-targeted delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic agents. Covalent cysteine conjugation combined with the exploitation of host-guest chemistry was used to effect the orthogonal functionalization of HSA with two functionally independent peptides. One of these peptides targets glypican-3 (GPC-3), an HCC-specific biomarker, while the second reduces macrophage phagocytosis through immune-checkpoint stimulation. This orthogonally engineered HSA proved effective for the GPC-3-targeted delivery of near-infrared fluorescent and phototherapeutic agents, thus permitting target-specific optical visualization and photodynamic ablation of HCC in vivo. This study thus offers new insights into specificity-enhanced fluorescence-guided surgery and phototherapy of HCC through the orthogonal engineering of biocompatible proteins.

Formation of polyrotaxane crystals driven by dative boron-nitrogen bonds

The integration of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) into purely organic crystalline materials is expected to produce materials with properties that are not accessible using more classic approaches. To date, this integration has proved elusive. We present a dative boron-nitrogen bond-driven self-assembly strategy that allows for the preparation of polyrotaxane crystals. The polyrotaxane nature of the crystalline material was confirmed by both single-crystal x-ray diffraction analysis and cryogenic high-resolution low-dose transmission electron microscopy. Enhanced softness and greater elasticity are seen for the polyrotaxane crystals than for nonrotaxane polymer controls. This finding is rationalized in terms of the synergetic microscopic motion of the rotaxane subunits. The present work thus highlights the benefits of integrating MIMs into crystalline materials.

Direct Extraction of Sodium Hydroxide by Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Ion-Pair Receptors

Described in this work are calix[4]pyrrole-based ion-pair receptors, cis/trans-1 and cis/trans-2, designed for the extraction of sodium hydroxide. An X-ray diffraction analysis of a single crystal of the cis-1·NaOH isomer isolated from a mixture of cis/trans-1 revealed a unique dimeric supramolecular structure. An average dimer in toluene-d₈ solution was inferred on the basis of diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY). Support for the proposed stoichiometry came from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The structural stability of the dimeric cis-1·NaOH complex in toluene solution was further confirmed by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation with explicit representation of solvent. Under conditions of liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), purified receptors cis- and trans-2 were both found to remove NaOH from a pH 11.01 aqueous source phase into toluene with extraction efficiencies (E%) of 50-60% when used equimolar to NaOH. However, in all cases, precipitation was observed. Complexities associated with precipitation could be avoided by immobilization of the receptors onto a chemically inert poly(styrene) resin by means of solvent impregnation. The use of solvent-impregnated resins (SIRs) eliminated precipitation in solution while retaining the extraction efficiency toward NaOH. This allowed both the pH and salinity of the alkaline source phase to be lowered.

Time-Dependent Solvent-Driven Solid-State Fluorescence-based Numeric Coding

Controllable solid-state transformations can provide a basis for novel functional materials. Herein, we report a series of solid-state systems that can be readily transformed between amorphous, co-crystalline, and mixed crystalline states via grinding or exposure to solvent vapors. The present solid materials were constructed using an all-hydrocarbon macrocycle, cyclo[8](1,3-(4,6-dimethyl)benzene) (D_4d-CDMB-8) (host), and neutral aggregation-caused quenching dyes (guests), including 9,10-dibromoanthracene (1), 1,8-naphtholactam (2), diisobutyl perylene-3,9-dicarboxylate (3), 4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (4), 4,7-di(2-thienyl)-benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole (5), and 4-imino-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-4H-quinolizine-1-carbonitrile (6). Seven co-crystals and six amorphous materials were obtained via host-guest complexation. Most of these materials displayed turn-on fluorescence emission (up to 20-fold enhancement relative to the corresponding solid-state guests). The interconversion between amorphous, co-crystalline states, and crystalline mixtures could be induced by exposure to solvent vapors or by subjecting to grinding. The transformations could be monitored readily by means of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses, as well as solid-state fluorescent emission spectroscopy. The externally induced structural interconversions resulted in time-dependent fluorescence changes. This allowed sets of privileged number array codes to be generated.

Caging the Hofmeister Effect by a Biomimetic Supramolecular Receptor

The effect of anions on the solubility and function of proteins was recognized in 1888 and is now termed the Hofmeister effect. Numerous synthetic receptors are known that overcome the associated anion recognition bias. However, we are unaware of a synthetic host being used to overcome Hofmeister effect perturbations to natural proteins. Here, we report a protonated small molecule cage complex that acts as an exo-receptor and displays non-Hofmeister solubility behavior, with only the chloride complex remaining soluble in aqueous media. This cage allows for the activity of lysozyme to be retained under conditions where anion-induced precipitation would otherwise cause it to be lost. To our knowledge, this is the first time a synthetic anion receptor is used to overcome the Hofmeister effect in a biological system.

A dual-action niclosamide-based prodrug that targets cancer stem cells and inhibits TNBC metastasis

Chemotherapy typically destroys the tumor mass but rarely eradicates the cancer stem cells (CSCs) that can drive metastatic recurrence. A key current challenge is finding ways to eradicate CSCs and suppress their characteristics. Here, we report a prodrug, Nic-A, created by combining a carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) inhibitor, acetazolamide, with a signal transducer and transcriptional activator 3 (STAT3) inhibitor, niclosamide. Nic-A was designed to target triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) CSCs and was found to inhibit both proliferating TNBC cells and CSCs via STAT3 dysregulation and suppression of CSC-like properties. Its use leads to a decrease in aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 activity, CD44high/CD24low stem-like subpopulations, and tumor spheroid-forming ability. TNBC xenograft tumors treated with Nic-A exhibited decreased angiogenesis and tumor growth, as well as decreased Ki-67 expression and increased apoptosis. In addition, distant metastases were suppressed in TNBC allografts derived from a CSC-enriched population. This study thus highlights a potential strategy for addressing CSC-based cancer recurrence.

Reversible Macrocycle-to-Macrocycle Interconversion Driven by Solvent Selection

Macrocycle-to-macrocycle interconversions are of interest because they can allow access to a variety of structures. However, reversible interconversion between different sized macrocycles remains challenging to control. Herein, we report a facile one-pot synthesis of a series of self-assembled macrocycles from readily prepared α,α'-linked oligopyrrolic dialdehydes and various alkyl diamines. The condensation of pyridine-bridged oligopyrrolic dialdehyde 3 and simple alkyl diamines proved independent of solvent, always yielding the [2 + 2] macrocyclic products. However, when 3 was condensed with 2,2'-oxybis(ethylamine) 14, either ([1 + 1] or [2 + 2]) products are obtained depending on the choice of solvent. Reaction of 3 and 14 in methanol, ethanol, or chloroform gave the [1 + 1] macrocycle as the sole product. In contrast, condensation of 3 and 14 in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), or acetonitrile (MeCN) yielded the [2 + 2] macrocycle as the major product in the form of a precipitate. Reversible interconversion between the [1 + 1] and [2 + 2] macrocycles could be achieved by tuning the solvent, with the ratio driven by thermodynamic and solubility considerations.

Substrate-Responsive Pillar[5]arene-Based Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is a photophysical phenomenon typically associated with a long-lived emission that can be detected by the unaided eye. Several natural proteins display RTP, as do certain artificial polymers. In both cases, the RTP is ascribed to effective intramolecular through-space electronic communication. However, small molecules with internal electronic communication that enable RTP are relatively rare. Herein, we describe an alkyl halide-responsive RTP system consisting of a meta-formylphenyl-bearing pillar[5]arene derivative that supports effective through-space charge transfer (TSCT) within the pillararene cavity. Treatment with bromoethane, a heavy atom-containing guest for the pillar[5]arene host, serves to enhance the emission. An isomeric para-formylphenyl-bearing pillar[5]arene system proved ineffective in producing an RTP effect. Quantum chemical calculations based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses provided insights into the structural determinants governing TSCT between the 1,4-dimethoxybenzene donor units and the formylphenyl groups of the pillar[5]arene, as well as the associated energy gaps and intersystem crossing channels. We believe that the present system and the associated mechanistic analysis provide the foundation for design of new small molecule with tunable RTP features.

Room temperature phosphorescence from natural wood activated by external chloride anion treatment

Producing afterglow room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from natural sources is an attractive approach to sustainable RTP materials. However, converting natural resources to RTP materials often requires toxic reagents or complex processing. Here we report that natural wood may be converted into a viable RTP material by treating with magnesium chloride. Specifically, immersing natural wood into an aqueous MgCl₂ solution at room temperature produces so-called C-wood containing chloride anions that act to promote spin orbit coupling (SOC) and increase the RTP lifetime. Produced in this manner, C-wood exhibits an intense RTP emission with a lifetime of ~ 297 ms (vs. the ca. 17.5 ms seen for natural wood). As a demonstration of potential utility, an afterglow wood sculpture is prepared in situ by simply spraying the original sculpture with a MgCl₂ solution. C-wood was also mixed with polypropylene (PP) to generate printable afterglow fibers suitable for the fabrication of luminescent plastics via 3D printing. We anticipate that the present study will facilitate the development of sustainable RTP materials.

Phenotyping of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Using a Ratiometric Sensor Array

Chemical tools capable of classifying multidrug-resistant bacteria (superbugs) can facilitate early-stage disease diagnosis and help guide precision therapy. Here, we report a sensor array that permits the facile phenotyping of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a clinically common superbug. The array consists of a panel of eight separate ratiometric fluorescent probes that provide characteristic vibration-induced emission (VIE) profiles. These probes bear a pair of quaternary ammonium salts in different substitution positions around a known VIEgen core. The differences in the substituents result in varying interactions with the negatively charged cell walls of bacteria. This, in turn, dictates the molecular conformation of the probes and affects their blue-to-red fluorescence intensity ratios (ratiometric changes). Within the sensor array, the differences in the ratiometric changes for the probes result in "fingerprints" for MRSA of different genotypes. This allows them to be identified using principal component analysis (PCA) without the need for cell lysis and nucleic acid isolation. The results obtained with the present sensor array agree well with those obtained using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis.

Photon-Controlled Pyroptosis Activation (PhotoPyro): An Emerging Trigger for Antitumor Immune Response

Pyroptosis refers to the process of gasdermin-mediated lytic programmed cell death (PCD) characterized by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Our knowledge of pyroptosis has expanded beyond the cellular level and now includes extracellular responses. In recent years, pyroptosis has attracted considerable attention due to its potential to induce host immunity. For instance, at the 2022 International Medicinal Chemistry of Natural Active Ligand Metal-Based Drugs (MCNALMD) conference, numerous researchers demonstrated an interest in photon-controlled pyroptosis activation ("PhotoPyro"), an emerging pyroptosis-engineered approach for activating systemic immunity via photoirradiation. Given this enthusiasm, we share in this Perspective our views on this emerging area and expound on how and why "PhotoPyro" could trigger antitumor immunity (i.e., turning so-called "cold" tumors "hot"). In doing so, we have tried to highlight cutting-edge breakthroughs in PhotoPyro while suggesting areas for future contributions. By providing insights into the current state of the art and serving as a resource for individuals interested in working in this area, it is hoped that this Perspective will set the stage for PhotoPyro to evolve into a broadly applicable cancer treatment strategy.

One Carbon Ring Expansion of Bipyrrole to Bipyridine Enables Access to a π-Extended, Non-innocent, Corrole-like Ligand

A π-extended, diaza-triphenylene embedded, mono-anionic corrole analogue and its Ni^II complex were synthesized from a diaza-triphenylene precursor, which was obtained from a double one-carbon insertion into a naphthobipyrrole diester. Following conversion to the corresponding activated diol and acid-catalyzed condensation with pyrrole, subsequent reaction with pentafluorobenzaldehyde afforded mono-anionic, π-extended bipyricorrole-like macrocycle. Attempted Ni^II insertion with Ni(OAc)₂  ⋅ 4H₂ O resulted an ESR active, Ni^II bipyricorrole radical complex, which was converted to a stable cationic Ni^II complex upon treatment with [(Et₃ O)⁺ (SbCl₆ )^- ]. Both complexes were characterized by ¹ H and ¹³ C NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Ni^II bipyricorrole radical complex is converted to a cationic Ni^II complex by single-electron reduction using cobaltocene. Both the cationic Ni^II complex and the radical Ni^II complex exhibited ligand-centered redox behavior, whereas the Ni^II remains in the +2 oxidation state.

Cu(ii)-BODIPY photosensitizer for CAIX overexpressed cancer stem cell therapy

Chemoresistance originating from cancer stem cells (CSCs) is a major cause of cancer treatment failure and highlights the need to develop CSC-targeting therapies. Although enormous progress in both photodynamic therapy (PDT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has been made in recent decades, the efficacy of these modalities against CSC remains limited. Here, we report a new generation photosensitizer, CA9-BPS-Cu(ii), a system that combines three subunits within a single molecule, namely a copper catalyst for CDT, a boron dipyrromethene photosensitizer for PDT, and acetazolamide for CSC targeting via carbonic anhydrase-9 (CA9) binding. A therapeutic effect in MDA-MB-231 cells was observed that is ascribed to elevated oxidative stress mediated by a combined CDT/PDT effect, as well as through copper-catalysed glutathione oxidation. The CSC targeting ability of CA9-BPS-Cu(ii) was evident from the enhanced affinity of CA9-BPS-Cu(ii) towards CD133-positive MDA-MB-231 cells where CA9 is overexpressed vs. CD133-negative cells. Moreover, the efficacy of CA9-BPS-Cu(ii) was successfully demonstrated in a xenograft mouse tumour model.

Chiral Calix[3]pyrrole Derivatives: Synthesis, Racemization Kinetics, and Ring Expansion to Calix[9]- and Calix[12]pyrrole Analogues

Chiral pyrrolic macrocycles continue to attract interest. However, their molecular design remains challenging. Here, we report a calixpyrrole-based chiral macrocyclic system, calix[1]furan[1]pyrrole[1]thiophene (1), synthesized from an oligoketone. Macrocycle 1 adopts a partial cone conformation in the solid state, and undergoes racemization via ring inversion. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that inversion of the thiophene is the rate determining step. Pyrrole N-methylation suppressed racemization and permitted chiral resolution. Enantioselective N-methylation also occurred in the presence of a chiral ammonium salt, although the stereoselectivity is modest. A unique feature of 1 is that it acts as a useful synthetic precursor to yield several calix[n]furan[n]pyrrole[n]thiophene products (n=2-4), including a calix[12]pyrrole analogue that to our knowledge constitutes the largest calix[n]pyrrole-like species to be structurally characterized.

Cyclic Carbaporphyrin Arrays

Two cyclic carbaporphyrin arrays (trimer 6 and tetramer 7) were synthesized from a dibrominated carbaporphyrin precursor (5) via a one-pot Yamamoto-type coupling. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that 6 and 7 contain three and four covalently linked carbaporphyrin (formally dicarbacorrole) units, respectively. Trimer 6 adopts a roughly planar conformation and tetramer 7 adopts an up-and-down zig-zag conformation. Both 6 and 7 contain a [n]cyclo-meta-phenylene ([n]CMP) core, namely, [6]- and [8]CMP for 6 and 7, respectively. Transient absorption (TA) anisotropy and pump-power-dependent excited-state decay studies provided evidence for excitation energy transfer (EET) within both trimer 6 and tetramer 7. The exciton energy hopping (EEH) times were estimated to be 18 and 35 ps for 6 and 7, respectively, as inferred from pump-power-dependent TA measurements. Since the center-to-center distances between adjacent carbaporphyrin units are similar in 6 and 7, the different EEH times are attributed to differences in the orientation of the transition dipoles in these two congeneric arrays. The orientation factor κ₂, the key parameter defining the Förster resonance energy transfer efficiency, was calculated to be 2.15 and 1.03 for 6 and 7, respectively, a finding that supports the shorter excitation energy hopping time seen in the case of trimer 6. To our knowledge, this is the first time that covalently linked cyclic carbaporphyrin arrays were synthesized using a single carbaporphyrin as the starting point and that EET between carbaporphyrin subunits constrained within a well-defined polycyclic framework has been correlated with structural differences.

Cyclo[2]carbazole[2]pyrrole: a preorganized calix[4]pyrrole analogue

A cyclo[2]carbazole[2]pyrrole (2) consisting of two carbazoles and two pyrroles has been synthesized by directly linking the carbazole 1- and 8-carbon atoms to the pyrrole α-carbon atoms. Macrocycle 2 is an extensively conjugated 16-membered macrocyclic ring that is fixed in a pseudo-1,3-alternate conformation. This provides a preorganized anion binding site consisting of two pyrrole subunits. ¹H NMR spectroscopic analysis revealed that only the two diagonally opposed pyrrole NH protons, as opposed to the carbazole protons, take part in anion binding. Nevertheless, cyclo[2]carbazole[2]pyrrole 2 binds representative anions with higher affinity in CD₂Cl₂ than calix[4]pyrrole (1), a well-studied non-conjugated tetrapyrrole macrocycle that binds anions via four pyrrolic NH hydrogen bond interactions. On the basis of computational studies, the higher chloride anion affinity of receptor 2 relative to 1 is rationalized in terms of a larger binding energy and a lower host strain energy associated with anion complexation. In the presence of excess fluoride or bicarbonate anions, compound 2 loses two pyrrolic NH protons to produce a stable dianionic macrocycle [2-2H]^2- displaying a quenched fluorescence.

Supramolecular Recognition within a Nanosized "Buckytrap" That Exhibits Substantial Photoconductivity

We report here a nanosized "buckytrap", 1, constructed from two bis-zinc(II) expanded-TTF (exTTF) porphyrin subunits. Two forms, 1a and 1b, differing in the axial ligands, H₂O vs tetrahydrofuran (THF), were isolated and characterized. Discrete host-guest inclusion complexes are formed upon treatment with fullerenes as inferred from a single-crystal X-ray structural analyses of 1a with C₇₀. The fullerene is found to be encapsulated within the inner pseudohexagonal cavity of 1a. In contrast, the corresponding free-base derivative (2) was found to form infinite ball-and-socket type supramolecular organic frameworks (3D-SOFs) with fullerenes, (2•C₆₀)_n or (2•C₇₀)_n. This difference is ascribed to the fact that in 1a and 1b the axial positions are blocked by a H₂O or THF ligand. Emission spectroscopic studies supported a 1:1 host-guest binding stoichiometry, allowing association constants of (2.0 ± 0.5) × 10⁴ M^-1 and (4.3 ± 0.9) × 10⁴ M^-1 to be calculated for C₆₀ and C₇₀, respectively. Flash-photolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity (FP-TRMC) studies of solid films of the Zn-complex 1a revealed that the intrinsic charge carrier transport, i.e., pseudo-photoconductivity (ϕ∑μ), increases upon fullerene inclusion (e.g., ϕ∑μ = 1.53 × 10^-4 cm² V^-1 s^-1 for C₆₀⊂(1a)₂ and ϕ∑μ = 1.45 × 10^-4 cm² V^-1 s^-1 for C₇₀⊂(1a)₂ vs ϕ∑μ = 2.49 × 10^-5 cm² V^-1 s^-1 for 1a) at 298 K. These findings provide support for the notion that controlling the nature of self-assembly supramolecular constructs formed from exTTF-porphyrin dimers through metalation or choice of fullerene can be used to regulate key functional features, including photoconductivity.

Quinoxaline-fused octaphyrin(2.0.0.0.2.0.0.0). A rudimentary chemosensor

A quinoxaline-fused octaphyrin(2.0.0.0.2.0.0.0) was synthesized by the FeCl₃-induced oxidative coupling of an α-free quinoxaline-fused tetrapyrrole. This macrocycle adopts a figure-of-eight conformation in the solid state and acts as a rudimentary chemosensor in solution. The Lewis basic anions fluoride and hydroxide induce a colour change via a deprotonation mechanism.

Di-2,7-pyrenidecaphyrin(1.1.0.0.0.1.1.0.0.0) and Its Bis-Organopalladium Complexes: Synthesis and Chiroptical Properties

A non-aromatic expanded carbaporphyrinoid, incorporating two built-in 2,7-pyrenylene moieties was synthesized. The intrinsically labile structure was demonstrated by proton-triggered conformational changes between the figure-of-eight and quasi-Möbius conformers. Upon treatment with Pd(OAc)₂ , the reaction produces two bis-Pd^II complexes with distinct coordination modes. Metal coordination serves to fix the macrocyclic frameworks with the net result that both bis-Pd^II complexes could be resolved by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a chiral stationary phase. The isolated enantiomers showed persistent chiroptical properties as evidenced by the intense response in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra and the record high absorption dissymmetry factors (g_abs of up to 0.038) seen in the near-infrared spectral region. Moreover, the mutual interconversion of these two Pd^II complexes was found to be stereospecific and to favor the more stable isomers under weakly acidic conditions.

Pillararene-Based Variable Stoichiometry Co-Crystallization: A Versatile Approach to Diversified Solid-State Superstructures

Variable stoichiometry co-crystals are important in solid-state supramolecular chemistry as they allow studies of structure-property relationships while permitting the synthesis of new scaffolds using identical synthons. In this work, we extend the concept of variable stoichiometry co-crystals into the realm of pillararene chemistry and show that this permits the rational construction of a diverse set of supramolecular structures in the solid state. Specifically, we report a series of variable stoichiometry co-crystals based on pillar[n]arenes and tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) and show that the combination of in-cavity complexation by pillar[n]arenes (n = 5,6) and outside binding with TCNB allows several types of co-crystals with different self-assembled superstructures to be isolated. The variable stoichiometry co-crystals of this study display different solid-state physicochemical properties, including colors and luminescence features. Among these pillar[n]arene-based co-crystals, we discovered unique crystallographic architectures wherein two sets of individual host-guest complexes co-exist in the solid state. These mixed co-crystal systems allow for vapochromic-based detection of n-bromoalkanes. This work highlights a new strategy for the construction of self-assembled superstructures in the solid state and for tuning their intrinsic characteristics, including their luminescent and substrate-responsive features.

Fluorescent copolymer aggregate sensor for lithium chloride

We report a copolymeric lithium chloride selective fluorescent sensor. No fluorescence change is seen upon the addition of NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, or CaCl2, while a fluorescence decrease is seen upon the addition of LiCl.

Sheet-like 2D Manganese(IV) Complex with High Photothermal Conversion Efficiency

We report a stable, water-soluble, mononuclear manganese(IV) complex [Mn^IV(H₂L)]·5H₂O (Mn-HDCL) that acts as an efficient photothermal material. This system is based on a hexahydrazide clathrochelate ligand (L/HDCL) and is obtained via an efficient one-pot templated synthesis that avoids the need for harsh reaction conditions. Scanning tunneling microscopy images reveal that Mn-HDCL exists as a 2D sheet-like structure. In Mn-HDCL, the manganese(IV) ion is trapped within the cavity of the cage-like ligand. This effectively shields the Mn(IV) ion from the external environment while providing adequate water solubility. As a result of orbital transitions involving the coordinated manganese(IV) ion, as well as metal-to-ligand charge transfer effects, Mn-HDCL possesses a large extinction coefficient and displays a photothermal performance comparable to single-wall carbon nanotubes in the solid state. A high photothermal conversion efficiency (ca. 71%) was achieved in aqueous solution when subjected to near-infrared 730 nm laser photo-irradiation. Mn-HDCL is paramagnetic and provides a modest increase in the T₁-weighted contrast of magnetic resonance images both in vitro and in vivo. Mn-HDCL was found to target tumors passively and allow tumor margins to be distinguished in vivo in a mouse model. In addition, it also exhibited an efficient laser-triggered photothermal therapy effect in vitro and in vivo. We thus propose that Mn-HDCL could have a role to play as a tumor-targeting photothermal sensitizer.

Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Azo-Bridged Porous Organic Polymer for Bromine Capture

The toxicity, corrosiveness, and volatility of elemental bromine presents challenges for its safe storage and transportation. Purification from other halogens is also difficult. Here, we report an easy-to-prepare calix[4]pyrrole-based azo-bridged porous organic polymer (C4P-POP) that supports efficient bromine capture. C4P-POP was found to capture bromine as a vapor and from a cyclohexane source phase with maximum uptake capacities of 3.6 and 3.4 g·g^-1, respectively. Flow-through adsorption experiments revealed that C4P-POP removes 80% of the bromine from a 4.0 mM cyclohexane solution at a flow rate of 45 mL·h^-1. C4P-POP also allowed the selective capture of bromine from a 1:1 mixture of bromine and iodine in cyclohexane.

Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Molecular Capsule: Dihydrogen Phosphate-Promoted 1:2 Fluoride Anion Complexation

A molecular capsule (1) consisting of two calix[4]pyrroles connected via ethylene diamide linkers has been prepared as an anion receptor. ¹H NMR spectroscopic studies carried out in CD₂Cl₂ revealed that receptor 1 recognizes a variety of anions with different binding modes and stoichiometries. For instance, receptor 1 binds fluoride and acetate with 1:2 receptor/anion stoichiometry and other test anions with 1:1 stoichiometry in solution when their respective tetrabutylammonium (TBA⁺) salts were used. In contrast, with tetraethylammnium (TEA⁺) salts, receptor 1 forms 1:2 complexes with chloride and bromide in addition to fluoride, overcoming expected Columbic repulsions between the anions co-bound in close proximity. Receptor 1 is also able to bind oxoanions, such as oxalate (C₂O₄^2-), dihydrogen phosphate (H₂PO₄^-), sulfate (SO₄^2-), and hydrogen pyrophosphate (HP₂O₇^3-), in the form of 1:1 complexes as the result of presumed cooperation between the two calix[4]pyrrole subunits. The selectivity of receptor 1 for fluoride versus dihydrogen phosphate varies depending on their relative concentrations. For instance, in the presence of less than 1.0 equiv of an equimolar mixture of fluoride and dihydrogen phosphate, receptor 1 shows high selectivity for dihydrogen phosphate. In contrast, in the presence of ≥2.0 anion equiv, receptor 1 binds fluoride preferentially, forming a 1:2 complex. Moreover, when treated with F^-, the preformed 1:1 H₂PO₄^- complex of receptor 1 is converted to the corresponding 1:2 receptor/fluoride complex with the release of the prebound dihydrogen phosphate anion. As inferred from gas-phase computations, this seemingly counterintuitive behavior is rationalized in terms of the precomplexed dihydrogen phosphate serving to reduce the reorganization energy required to bind two fluoride anions. The presence of a water molecule in addition to the bound fluoride anions may also favor the formation of the 1:2 F^- complex. The present study provides a new approach for fine-tuning the binding selectivity of polytopic anion receptors.

Exhausted Cr(VI) Sensing/Removal Aerogels Are Recycled for Water Purification and Solar-Thermal Energy Generation

Heavy metal pollution has resulted in numerous environmental challenges. However, classic approaches, involving the use of solid adsorbents are subject to limitations, including the high energy consumption required for processing before and after use. Accordingly, strategies that facilitate the use of metal capture media that extends beyond waste remediation are attractive. Herein, a porous fluorescent aerogel (CPC aerogel) is constructed by immersing amino-based carbon dots (CDs-NH₂ ) into a polyethyleneimine (PEI)/carboxymethylated cellulose (CMC) aerogel network for the simultaneous detection and adsorption of Cr(VI). Adsorption experiments confirm that the CMC/PEI containing CDs-NH₂ aerogel (CPC aerogel) exhibits good Cr(VI) extraction capacity, and can reach a level that conforms with industrial water safety standards. In addition, the CPC aerogel can continuously detect and remove Cr(VI) at high flux. Following Cr(VI) absorption, the CPC aerogel may be vulcanized (MS_x -CPC gel) and used for solar thermoelectric generation resulting in power generation. Additionally, the MS_x -CPC gel can be used for solar steam generation and exhibits excellent evaporation rates of ≈1.31 kg m^-2 h^-1 under one sun irradiation. The results serve to underscore how materials designed for metal ion recognition and adsorption once exhausted can be exploited to provide materials for solar thermoelectric power generation and seawater desalination.
