Abstract
Climate dictates wildfire activity around the world. But East and Southeast Asia are an apparent exception as fire-activity variation there is unrelated to climatic variables. In subtropical China, fire activity decreased by 80% between 2003 and 2020 amid increased fire risks globally. Here, we assessed the fire regime, vegetation structure, fuel flammability and their interactions across subtropical Hubei, China. We show that tree basal area (TBA) and fuel flammability explained 60% of fire-frequency variance. Fire frequency and fuel flammability, in turn, explained 90% of TBA variance. These results reveal a novel system of scrubland-forest stabilized by vegetation-fire feedbacks. Frequent fires promote the persistence of derelict scrubland through positive vegetation-fire feedbacks; in forest, vegetation-fire feedbacks are negative and suppress fire. Thus, we attribute the decrease in wildfire activity to reforestation programs that concurrently increase forest coverage and foster negative vegetation-fire feedbacks that suppress wildfire.

Abstract
Objective To explore the clinical application of a new type of protective sputum suction device (PSSD) in patients with tracheotomy or tracheal intubation and to evaluate the protective effect of PSSD against cross-infection between medical staffs and patients. Methods A novel PSSD was designed which can assist closed sputum suction operation without disconnecting the ventilator. 32 patients with tracheotomy were included to study the protective effect and safety of this device. Patients' vital signs including heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, and blood oxygen saturation were recorded to compare the influence of open suction and closed suction (performed with this novel device). To verify the antisplash effect of this device on airway secretions, bacterial samples were collected from the hands of the suction operators and the environment near the endotracheal tube orifice before and after the two suction processes. In addition, the satisfaction of the two suction methods was compared through the questionnaire of suction staff. Finally, with the assistance of this device, an attempt was made to complete the bronchoscopy without weaning of ventilator. Results Compared with open sputum suction, closed sputum suction has a smaller decrease in patients' blood oxygen saturation (P < 0.05), and no significant differences in other vital signs. Compared with open sputum suction, bacteria from the hands of suction staffs and the surrounding environment of the endotracheal tube were barely detected in closed suction. A questionnaire survey of sputum suction nurses suggested that the satisfaction with use and protective effect of the closed suction were better than open suction. In addition, bronchoscopy can be successfully completed with the assistance of this device, which is not possible for other breathing tubes. Conclusion This closed sputum suction device has little effect on the oxygen saturation of patients but has excellent protective effects for medical staff against cross-infection. It has a unique advantage that can assist in completing the fiberoptic bronchoscopy with continuous ventilator-assisted breathing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adequate brain swelling resolution prior to cranioplasty (CP) is an important yet loosely defined issue. Despite efforts to balance timely CP and patient safety, heterogeneous study methodologies have led to conflicting results. This study aims to standardize this issue through quantifying degree of brain swelling resolution using a proposed Visual CP Scale. METHODS The proposed Visual CP Scale is validated through a 2-pronged approach. The first prong involves a national survey in Taiwan, where neurosurgeons were surveyed to determine what constitutes a patient's readiness for CP. The second prong involves a large retrospective cohort, where the correlations between timing, degree of brain swelling resolution, and post-CP complication rates, are evaluated. RESULTS In the national Taiwan CP Survey, 124 out of 772 neurosurgeons (17.2%) completed the survey. Respondents who chose higher grades on the Visual CP Scale preferred later CP timings. In the retrospective data, 378 out of 770 (49.1%) patients had pre-CP brain images, allowing for the utilization of the Visual CP Scale. A Visual CP Scale score of greater than or equal to 4 was associated with fewer complications after CP. CONCLUSIONS The timing of CP should be determined by the degree of brain swelling resolution, not vice versa. The proposed Visual CP Scale offers an objective method for assessing brain swelling resolution, making it an adjuvant tool for clinical decision-making and future research related to CP.

Abstract
This study involving 674 elderly osteoporotic fracture (OPF) patients undergoing orthopedic surgery investigated the long-term outcomes of acute phase reaction (APR) after initial zoledronic acid (ZOL). Those who had an APR had a 97% higher risk of mortality and a 73% lower rate of re-fracture than patients who did not. INTRODUCTION Annual infusion of ZOL efficiently decreases the risk of fracture. A temporary APR, consisting of flu-like symptoms, myalgia, and fever, is frequently observed within 3 days after the first dose. This work aimed to identify whether the occurrence of APR after initial ZOL infusion is a reliable indicator of drug efficacy for mortality and re-fracture in elderly OPF patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. METHODS This retrospectively observed work was constructed on a database prospectively collected from the Osteoporotic Fracture Registry System of a tertiary level A hospital in China. Six hundred seventy-four patients 50 years old or older with newly identified hip/morphological vertebral OPF who received ZOL for the first time after orthopedic surgery were included in the final analysis. APR was identified as a maximum axillary body temperature greater than 37.3 °C for the first 3 days after ZOL infusion. We utilized models of multivariate Cox proportional hazards to compare the risk of all-cause mortality in OPF patients with APR (APR+) and without APR (APR-). Competing risks regression analysis was used to examine the association between the occurrence of APR and re-fracture when mortality was taken into account. RESULTS In a fully adjusted Cox proportional hazards model, APR+ patients had a significantly higher risk of death than APR- patients with a hazard ratio [HR] 1.97 (95% CI, 1.09-3.56; P-value = 0.02). Furthermore, in an adjusted competing risk regression analysis, APR+ patients had a significantly reduced risk of re-fracture compared with APR- patients with a sub-distribution HR, 0.27 (95% CI, 0.11-0.70; P-value = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested a potential association between the occurrence of APR and increased mortality risk. An initial dose of ZOL following orthopedic surgery was found to be protective against re-fracture in older patients with OPFs.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of bendamustine in combination with rituximab (BR regimen) for the treatment of newly diagnosed indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-iNHL) and elderly mantle cell lymphoma (eMCL) . Methods: From December 1, 2020 to September 10, 2022, a multi-center prospective study was conducted across ten Grade A tertiary hospitals in Shandong Province, China. The BR regimen was administered to evaluate its efficacy and safety in newly diagnosed B-iNHL and eMCL patients, and all completed at least four cycles of induction therapy. Results: The 72 enrolled patients with B-iNHL or MCL were aged 24-74 years, with a median age of 55 years. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status scores of 0-1 were observed in 76.4% of patients, while 23.6% had scores of 2. Disease distribution included follicular lymphoma (FL) (51.4% ), marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) (33.3% ), eMCL (11.1% ), and the unknown subtype (4.2% ). According to the Ann Arbor staging system, 16.7% and 65.3% of patients were diagnosed with stage Ⅲ and stage Ⅳ lymphomas, respectively. Following four cycles of BR induction therapy, the overall response rate was 98.6%, with a complete response (CR) rate of 83.3% and a partial response (PR) rate of 15.3%. Only one eMCL patient experienced disease progression during treatment, and only one FL patient experienced a relapse. Even when evaluated using CT alone, the CR rate was 63.9%, considering the differences between PET/CT and CT assessments. The median follow-up duration was 11 months (range: 4-22), with a PFS rate of 96.8% and an OS rate of 100.0%. The main hematologic adverse reactions included grade 3-4 leukopenia (27.8%, with febrile neutropenia observed in 8.3% of patients), grade 3-4 lymphopenia (23.6% ), grade 3-4 anemia (5.6% ), and grade 3-4 thrombocytopenia (4.2% ). The main non-hematologic adverse reactions such as fatigue, nausea/vomiting, rash, and infections occurred in less than 20.0% of patients. Conclusion: Within the scope of this clinical trial conducted in China, the BR regimen demonstrated efficacy and safety in treating newly diagnosed B-iNHL and eMCL patients.

Abstract
Aim: To explore the potential role of hsa_circ_0005480 as a marker for gastric cancer (GC). Methods: GSE83521, GSE93541 and GSE131414 were combined to screen the most potential circRNAs in GC. The expression of hsa_circ_0005480 was verified in clinical plasma samples and its diagnostic performance was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: Hsa_circ_0005480 was upregulated in newly diagnosed GC patients, and performed well in distinguishing GC patients from healthy donors. Combination of hsa_circ_0005480 with traditional laboratory metrics showed increased sensitivity and accuracy than standalone application. In addition, hsa_circ_0005480 expression was low in GC patients treated with chemoradiotherapy or surgery, and decreased dynamically about 1 week postoperatively. Conclusion: Hsa_circ_0005480 may prove to be a marker for auxiliary diagnosis and prognostic evaluation of GC.

Abstract
Supersaturated solid solutions can be formed in alloys from various non-equilibrium processes, but stabilizing the metastable phases against decomposition is challenging, particularly the spinodal decomposition which occurs via chemical fluctuations without energy barriers to nucleation. Herein, we found that spinodal decomposition in supersaturated Al(Zn) solid solutions can be inhibited with straining-induced extreme grain refinement. For the refined supersaturated grains in the nano-scale, their spinodal decomposition is obviously resisted by the relaxed grain boundaries and reduced lattice defects. As grains are refined below 10 nm the decomposition is completely inhibited, in which atomic diffusion are blocked by the stable Schwarz crystal structure with vacancy-free grains. The extreme grain refinement offers a general approach to stabilize supersaturated phases with broadened compositional windows for property modulation of alloys. Abstract
Background The incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has increased steadily over the past few decades. Elucidating its global burden will facilitate more effective disease management and improve patient outcomes. We explored the disease burden, risk factors, and trends in incidence and mortality in NHL globally. Methods The up-to-date data on age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of NHL were retrieved from the GLOBOCAN 2020, CI5 volumes I-XI, WHO mortality database, and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, focusing on geographic disparities worldwide. We reported incidence and mortality by sex and age, along with corresponding age-standardized rates (ASRs), the average annual percentage change (AAPC), and future burden estimates to 2040. Results In 2020, there were an estimated 545,000 new cases and 260,000 deaths of NHL globally. In addition, NHL resulted in 8,650,352 age-standardized DALYs in 2019 worldwide. The age-specific incidence rates varied drastically across world areas, at least 10-fold in both sexes, with the most pronounced increase trend found in Australia and New Zealand. By contrast, North African countries faced a more significant mortality burden (ASR, 3.7 per 100,000) than highly developed countries. In the past decades, the pace of increase in incidence and mortality accelerated, with the highest AAPC of 4.9 (95%CI: 3.6-6.2) and 6.8 (95%CI: 4.3-9.2) in the elderly population, respectively. Considering risk factors, obesity was positively correlated with age-standardized incidence rates (P< 0.001). And North America was the high-risk region for DALYs due to the high body mass index in 2019. Regarding demographic change, NHL incident cases are projected to rise to approximately 778,000 by 2040. Conclusion In this pooled analysis, we provided evidence for the growing incidence trends in NHL, particularly among women, older adults, obese populations, and HIV-infected people. And the marked increase in the older population is still a public health issue that requires more attention. Future efforts should be directed at cultivating health awareness and formulating effective and locally tailored cancer prevention strategies, especially in most developing countries.

Abstract
As a ubiquitous signal molecule in biosystems, nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in many physiological and pathological processes. Therefore, it is of great significance to detect NO in organisms for the study of related diseases. Currently, a variety of NO fluorescent probes have been developed based on several types of reaction mechanisms. However, due to the inherent disadvantages of these reactions, like potential interference by biologically related species, there is a great need to develop NO probes based on the new reactions. Herein, we report our discovery of the unprecedented reaction between a widely used fluorophore of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-(dimethylamino)styryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) and NO under mild conditions with fluorescence changes. By the analysis of the structure of the product, we proved that DCM undergoes a particular nitration process and proposed a mechanism for fluorescence changes due to the interruption of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process of DCM by the nitrated product of DCM-NO2. Based on the understanding of this specific reaction, we then easily constructed our lysosomal-localized NO fluorescent probe LysoNO-DCM by linking DCM and a morpholine group, a lysosomal-targeting functional group. LysoNO-DCM exhibits excellent selectivity, sensitivity, pH stability, and outstanding lysosome localization ability with Pearson's colocalization coefficient of up to 0.92 and is successfully applied to the imaging of exogenous and endogenous NO in cells and zebrafish. Our studies expand design methods for NO fluorescence probes based on the novel reaction mechanism and will benefit the studies of this signaling molecule.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is a common complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). The interaction between post-transplant hyperlipidemia and acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is uncertain. In this study, we performed a retrospective study to explore the relationship between dyslipidemia and aGVHD and the potential mechanism of aGVHD on dyslipidemia in 147 recipients who underwent allo-HSCT. The lipid profiles, transplantation details, and other laboratory data of the subjects were collected in the first 100 days post-transplantation. Our results indicated 63 patients with new-onset hypertriglyceridemia and 39 patients with new-onset hypercholesterolemia. A total of 57 (38.8%) patients developed aGVHD after transplantation. In a multifactorial analysis, aGVHD was an independent factor in the development of dyslipidemia in recipients (P < 0.05). After transplantation, the median LDL-C level of patients with aGVHD was 3.04 mmol/L (standard deviation value (SD): 1.36 mmol/L, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.62, 3.45 mmol/L), and the LDL-C level in patients without aGVHD was 2.51 mmol/L (SD: 1.38 mmol/L, CI: 2.67, 3.40 mmol/L) (P < 0.05). Female recipients had higher lipid levels than males (P < 0.05). LDL levels (≥ 3.4 mmol/L) post-transplant were an independent risk factor for the development of aGVHD (OR = 0.311, P < 0.05). In conclusion, larger sample studies are anticipated to confirm our preliminary result, and an accurate mechanism between lipid metabolism and aGVHD needs to be determined in the future.

Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurological disorders, and its mainly clinical symptoms, including patient hand's kinetic tremor, dystonia, ataxia, etc., would influence the daily life of patients inordinately. Current ET diagnosis highly replies on the clinical evaluation and neurological examination, so the objective measurement indicators are particularly important in the auxiliary diagnosis of ET. In this research, the Archimedes spiral line freehand sketching samples without template assistance is collected and the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model of optimized structure is adopted to fully analyze the tremor, spacing of turns, shape, etc. shown in the handwriting samples of patients with ET, including the following main process: characteristics extraction, model visualization and subregional relevance evaluation. Dropout is used as a regularization technique in the network structure. The test group consisted of 50 patients with confirmed ET and the control group consisted of 40 healthy individuals. The main research objectives of this paper comprise two points: on the one hand, to achieve effective automatic classification of patients with ET and healthy controls using a scheme combining deep learning and simple hand mapping for the purpose of primary disease screening; on the other hand, to design sub-regional automatic classification experiments to demonstrate that Archimedean spiral hand drawings of patients with ET do have distinct local features, and to lay the experimental foundation for future hand drawing-based automatic aid for the identification of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases. Our model's average accuracy rate in test set reaches 89.3%, and average AUC is 0.972, with favorable stability and generalization performance. Besides, subregional characteristics recognition proofs that the spiral line samples of most of the patients with ET show more category-related characteristics in the local area of upper right, which provides evidences and theory update for predecessors' medical research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tendon injury is associated with oxidative stress, leading to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and inflammation. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a potent antioxidant. However, how NAC affects the biological functions of tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSPCs) and tendon repair has not been clarified. METHOD: The impacts of NAC on the viability, ROS production, and differentiation of TSPCs were determined with the cell counting kit-8, fluorescence staining, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence. The effect of NAC on gene transcription in TSPCs was analyzed by transcriptomes and bioinformatics and validated by Western blotting. The potential therapeutic effect of NAC on tendon repair was tested in a rat model of Achilles tendon injury. RESULTS Compared with the untreated control, treatment with 500 µM NAC greatly promoted the proliferation of TSPCs and significantly mitigated hydrogen peroxide-induced ROS production and cytotoxicity in vitro. NAC treatment significantly increased the relative protein expression of collagen type 1 alpha 1 (COL1A1), tenascin C (TNC), scleraxis (SCX), and tenomodulin (TNMD) in TPSCs. Bioinformatics analyses revealed that NAC modulated transcriptomes, particularly in the integrin-related phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling, and Western blotting revealed that NAC enhanced integrin α5β1 expression and PI3K/AKT activation in TSPCs. Finally, NAC treatment mitigated the tendon injury, but enhanced the protein expression of SCX, TNC, TNMD, and COLIA1 in the injured tissue regions of the rats. CONCLUSION NAC treatment promoted the survival and differentiation of TSPCs to facilitate tendon repair after tendon injury in rats. Thus, NAC may be valuable for the treatment of tendon injury.

Abstract
AIM To provide quality care to older adults, healthcare professionals should be aware that osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) might occur sequentially in the same patient, involving different vertebral bodies, each separated by short intervals. This situation is called chronologically clustered OVCFs (CCOVCF). METHODS A total of 40 patients with CCOVCFs (index cohort) were retrospectively analyzed, and compared with 40 patients having only one OVCF (comparison cohort). All fractures were treated with percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty. RESULTS In the index cohort, the number of patients having the second, third, fourth and fifth OVCF events within 3 months were 40, 15, five and two, respectively. Recurring pain or seemingly non-stop pain were the major reasons why new OCVFs were found. The average interval between pain relief provided by percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty and radiographic diagnosis of new OVCFs was significantly longer than that between pain relief and a new episode of disabling pain (26.7 ± 16.8 vs 16.4 ± 15.8 days, P < 0.0001), reflecting how shortly new OCVFs occurred after successful surgery, and how often they were neglected. The mean T-score of the index cohort was significantly lower than that of the comparison cohort (-3.66 ± 0.79 vs -3.17 ± 0.80, P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS CCOVCFs make a patient seem constantly in pain, despite repeated admissions and operations. Recurrent symptoms after an effective procedure should be taken as a warning that a new OCVF might have occurred, even if only a few days apart. Advanced osteoporosis is a significant risk factor for CCOVCFs. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2023; 23: 44-49.

Abstract
Creep, the time-dependent deformation of materials stressed below the yield strength, is responsible for a great number of component failures at high temperatures. Because grain boundaries (GBs) in materials usually facilitate diffusional processes in creep, eliminating GBs is a primary approach to resisting high-temperature creep in metals, such as in single-crystal superalloy turbo blades. We report a different strategy to inhibiting creep by use of stable GB networks. Plastic deformation triggered structural relaxation of high-density GBs in nanograined single-phased nickel-cobalt-chromium alloys, forming networks of stable GBs interlocked with abundant twin boundaries. The stable GB networks effectively inhibit diffusional creep processes at high temperatures. We obtained an unprecedented creep resistance, with creep rates of ~10
–7
per second under gigapascal stress at 700°C (~61% melting point), outperforming that of conventional superalloys.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Insulin resistance and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) both relate to cardiovascular mortality. Using a mouse model of chronic lipid overload and secondary-NAFLD-induced insulin resistance (SEC-NAFLD-IR), we recently deciphered that SEC-NAFLD-IR already at young age provoked myocardial lipotoxicity with reduced mitochondrial efficiency and increased vulnerability to cardiac ischemia. However, long-term consequences of SEC-NAFLD-IR remain elusive.
Purpose
Here we aimed to elucidate the impact of long-term SEC-NAFLD-IR on multiple mitochondrial quality control (mQC) mechanisms in the heart and its consequences for cardiac function.
Methods
We studied 36 SEC-NAFLD-IR mice (72-week-old). For mechanistic experiments, we applied palmitate-induced insulin resistant murine HL-1 cells. Cardiac mitochondrial dynamics were measured via quantification of mitochondrial morphology and expression of mitochondrial fusion and fission factors (Opa1, Drp1, Fis1, Mfn 1 & 2). Mitophagy level was evaluated via immunofluorescence and protein expression of key mitophagy-related genes (Parkin, NIX, LC3). Mitochondrial biogenesis and mass were examined via quantitation of PGC-1α expression, mtDNA and citrate synthase activity.
Results
72-week-old SEC-NAFLD-IR mice exhibited 21% (p=0.001) and 32% (p<0.001) higher body weight and heart weight compared with controls. Along with elevated oxidative stress, hepatic lipid accumulation and inflammation, 6h-fasted SEC-NAFLD-IR mice were characterized by increased plasma glucose, insulin and cholesterol. SEC-NAFLD-IR mice displayed a cardiac phenotype with 21% higher left ventricular mass (normalized to body weight, p<0.001) and 6% lower ejection fraction compared to controls (73.5% SEM 0.90 vs 69.4% SEM 1.65, p=0.04). We found several advantageous mQC mechanisms suppressed in aged SEC-NAFLD-IR mice including long form OPA1-mediated mitochondrial fusion, Parkin- and NIX-mediated mitophagy. Likewise, mitochondrial biogenesis was suppressed in the aged insulin-resistant heart, which was connected to a 65% downregulation of PGC-1α1 expression (p=0.01). Interestingly, downregulation of cardiac PGC-1α1 in aged SEC-NAFLD-IR mice coincided with upregulation of PARIS, indicating the crucial participation of the Parkin/PARIS pathway in mQC of the insulin-resistant heart. In addition, induction of insulin resistance in murine HL-1 cardiomyocytes also led to increased mitochondrial fragmentation and decreased PGC-1α1 expression.
Conclusion
This study demonstrated that regulation of mitochondrial network and turnover is hampered by SEC-NAFLD-IR in the hearts of aged mice, which may contribute to hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction in insulin resistance.

Abstract
Oxidative damage caused by upregulated nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Currently, stimulus-triggered theranostic agents have received much attention due to benefits on disease imaging and targeted therapeutic effects. However, the development of a theranostic agent triggered by NO for AD remains unexplored. Herein, through the mechanism analysis of the reaction between a fluorophore of 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) and NO, which we occasionally found and thereafter structure optimization of DPAC, a theranostic agent DPAC-(peg)4-memantine was fabricated. In an AD cellular model, DPAC-(peg)4-memantine exhibits NO sensing ability for AD imaging. Meanwhile, DPAC-(peg)4-memantine shows improved therapeutic by targeted drug release triggered by NO and sustained therapeutic effects owing to the synergetic antioxidative abilities via the anti-AD drug and NO scavenging. This work provides an unprecedented avenue for the studies on not only AD but also other diseases with NO upregulation.

Abstract
Purpose The reconstruction of a tendon insertion on metal prostheses is a challenge in orthopedics. Of the available metal prostheses, porous metal prostheses have been shown to have better biocompatibility for tissue integration. Therefore, this study is aimed at identifying an appropriate porous structure for the reconstruction of a tendon insertion on metal prostheses. Methods Ti6Al4V specimens with a diamond-like porous structure with triply periodic minimal surface pore sizes of 300, 500, and 700 μm and a porosity of 58% (designated Ti300, Ti500, and Ti700, respectively) were manufactured by selective laser melting and were characterized with micro-CT and scanning electron microscopy for their porosity, pore size, and surface topography. The porous specimens were implanted into the patellar tendon of rabbits. Tendon integration was evaluated after implantation into the tendon at 4, 8, and 12 weeks by histology, and the fixation strength was evaluated with a pull-out test at week 12. Results The average pore sizes of the Ti300, Ti500, and Ti700 implants were 261, 480, and 668 μm, respectively. The Ti500 and Ti700 implants demonstrated better tissue growth than the Ti300 implant at weeks 4, 8, and 12. At week 12, the histological score of the Ti500 implant was 13.67 ± 0.58, and it had an area percentage of type I collagen of 63.90% ± 3.41%; both of these results were significantly higher than those for the Ti300 and Ti700 implants. The pull-out load at week 12 was also the highest in the Ti500 group. Conclusion Ti6Al4V implants with a diamond-like porous structure with triply periodic minimal surface pore size of 500 μm are suitable for tendon integration.

Abstract
Nanozymes with excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial properties offers an alternative strategy for food preservation. This review comprehensively summarized the antibacterial mechanisms of nanozymes, including the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the destruction of biofilms. Besides, the primary factors (size, morphology, hybridization, light, etc.) regulating the antibacterial activity of different types of nanozymes were highlighted in detail, which provided effective guidance on how to design highly efficient antibacterial nanozymes. Moreover, this review presented elaborated viewpoints on the unique applications of nanozymes in food preservation, including the selection of nanozymes loading matrix, fabrication techniques of nanozymes-based antibacterial films/coatings, and the recent advances in the application of nanozymes-based antibacterial films/coatings in food preservation. In the end, the safety issues of nanozymes have also been mentioned. Overall, this review provided new avenues in the field of food preservation and displayed great prospects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The goal of this study is to explore the clinical value of routine tests in multiple myeloma (MM). METHODS A total of 179 MM patients, newly diagnosed in our hospital from January 2010 to December 2018 (case group), as well as 352 cases of healthy individuals (control group) were evaluated. Albumin (Alb), globulin (Glb), albumin/globulin (A/G), creatinine (Cr), calcium (Ca), hemoglobin (Hb), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), platelet count (Plt), and platelet distribution width (PDW) were compared between the analyzed groups. Respective tests were screened by forward selection. Thereafter, screened out indicators were identified through logistic regression analysis. Risk prediction nomogram, area under curve (AUC), calibration, decision curve analysis (DCA), and clinical impact curve (CIC) were further performed. At the same time, routine test indicators of MM patients for stage and subtype diagnosis, were compared. A correlation analysis between these test indicators and respective disease stages was performed. High stage group and low stage groups were subsequently compared to define the predictive value of single and combined indicators of disease severity. RESULTS Except for Ca, the difference between the case and control groups for all other blood indicators was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Moreover, the difference in positive rate(s) was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of Alb, Hb, and PDW harbored robust discrimination (AUC = 0.960) and appropriate calibration. The DCA and CIC showed that the resulting nomogram had a superior net benefit in predicting MM. Among all indicators, only LDH was statistically reduced in MM patients at ISS stages I, II, and III (p < 0.05). Interestingly, the ISS stage of respective MM patients was positively correlated with Cr (τ = 0.392), while it was negatively correlated with Hb (τ = -0.364). Alb, Glo, A/G, and Hb were significantly distinct between heavy chain (IgG, IgA) and LC, while few significant differences were found between the ISS stages. Lastly, the AUC (0.828) for Cr was greater than that for all other single and combined indicators. CONCLUSIONS The effective application of major indicators measured in routine blood tests can provide important clues for the diagnosis and prognosis of MM.

Abstract
High-β_{θe} (a ratio of the electron thermal pressure to the poloidal magnetic pressure) steady-state long-pulse plasmas with steep central electron temperature gradient are achieved in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. An intrinsic current is observed to be modulated by turbulence driven by the electron temperature gradient. This turbulent current is generated in the countercurrent direction and can reach a maximum ratio of 25% of the bootstrap current. Gyrokinetic simulations and experimental observations indicate that the turbulence is the electron temperature gradient mode (ETG). The dominant mechanism for the turbulent current generation is due to the divergence of ETG-driven residual flux of current. Good agreement has been found between experiments and theory for the critical value of the electron temperature gradient triggering ETG and for the level of the turbulent current. The maximum values of turbulent current and electron temperature gradient lead to the destabilization of an m/n=1/1 kink mode, which by counteraction reduces the turbulence level (m and n are the poloidal and toroidal mode number, respectively). These observations suggest that the self-regulation system including turbulence, turbulent current, and kink mode is a contributing mechanism for sustaining the steady-state long-pulse high-β_{θe} regime.

Abstract
Background Sequential treatment with different generations of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors have been widely applied to ALK-positive lung cancer; however, resistance mutations inevitably developed. Further characterization of ALK resistance mutations may provide key guidance to subsequent therapies. Here we explored the emergence of secondary ALK mutations during sequential ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment in a real-world study of Chinese lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) patients. Methods A clinical-genomic database was queried for lung ADC patients with at least one ALK inhibitor treatment and at least one plasma sample collected following ALK inhibitor treatment. Targeted genome profiling was performed with a 139-gene panel in baseline tumor tissue and serial plasma samples of patients. Results A total of 116 patients met inclusion criteria. ALK G1202R was more common in patients with echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 (EML4)-ALK v3 fusion, whereas ALK L1196M was more common in v1. TP53 mutant patients were significantly associated with harboring multiple ALK resistance mutations (P = 0.03) and v3+/TP53 mutant patients had the highest rate of multiple ALK resistance mutations. The sequential use of ALK TKI led to an increased incidence of concurrent ALK mutations along the lines of therapies. Alectinib had a lower rate (9%) harboring ALK resistance mutation as first-line ALK TKI compared with crizotinib (36%). ALK compound mutations identified included ALK D1203N/L1196M, ALK G1202R/L1196M, and ALK G1202R/F1174C, which may be lorlatinib resistant. Using paired pretreatment and post-treatment samples, we identified several ALK-independent resistance-related genetic alterations, including PTPRD and CNKN2A/B loss, MYC, MYCN and KRAS amplification, and EGFR19del. Conclusions Sequential postprogression plasma profiling revealed that increased lines of ALK inhibitors can accelerate the accumulation of ALK resistance mutations and may lead to treatment-refractory compound ALK mutations. The selection for optimal first-line TKI is very important to achieve a more efficacious long-term strategy and prevent the emergence of on-target resistance, which may provide guidance for clinical decision making. ALK resistance mutations were differentially enriched in the setting of EML4-ALK v1/v3 and TP53 status. Serial liquid biopsies NGS depicted accumulation of multiple ALK secondary mutations during sequential ALK treatments. Several lorlatinib-resistant ALK compound mutations and ALK-independent resistance genetic alterations were identified.

Abstract
Xiaoyao Powder (XYP) has been widely applied in China to treat stress-related illnesses, such as migraine, depression, Parkinson’s disease, insomnia, and hypertension. Herein, this study aims to explore the effect of XYP on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression and its underlying mechanisms. CUMS-induced depression rat models were established, they were subsequently randomly divided and treated with various conditions. Results of this study indicated that supplementation of XYP observably abolished CUMS-induced hippocampal damage and serum corticosterone (CORT) elevation. In mechanism, we discovered that CUMS induction could cause a prominent downregulation in glucocorticoid receptor (GR), phosphorylated-GR (p-GR), connexin 43 (Cx43), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a remarkable upregulation in c-Src. While the introduction of XYP could reverse the changes in all of these indicators mediated by CUMS. Furthermore, we proved that Cx43 could interact with GR, and the protective effect of XYP on hippocampal neurons is realized by up-regulating GR. Summarized, this study indicated that XYP could ameliorate hippocampal neuron damage in CUMS-induced depression model rats through acting on Cx43/GR/BDNF axis.

Abstract
A prototype Schwarz crystal (SC) structure of dividing-space minimal grain boundaries (GBs) constrained by coherent twin boundaries (CTBs) was recently discovered in extremely fine-grained polycrystalline Cu. In this Letter, constraining effects of 3D CTB network on the formation and thermostability of SC are addressed via atomistic simulations. GB migration and evolution of CTB network trigger formation of SC diamond. CTB constraints are critical to generate GBs of zero mean curvature underlying vanishing capillary pressure, and to counterbalance the elastic driving forces of lattice. GB motion can be suppressed at temperatures close to the melting point with GB aperture down to 3 nm.

Abstract
Designing metal sulfides with unique configurations and exploring their electrochemical activities for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydrazine (N2H4) is challenging and desirable for various fields. Herein, hollow microflower-like CuS@C hybrids were successfully assembled and further exploited as a versatile electrochemical sensing platform for H2O2 reduction and N2H4 oxidation, of which the elaborate strategies make the perfect formation of hollow architecture, providing considerable electrocatalytic sites and fast charge transfer rate, while the appropriate introduction polydopamine-derived carbon skeleton facilitates the electronic conductivity and boosts structural robustness, thus generating wide linear range (0.05-14 and 0.01-10 mM), low detection limit (0.22 μM and 0.07 μM), and a rather low overpotential (-0.15 and -0.05 V) toward H2O2 and N2H4, as well as good selectivity, excellent reproducibility, and admirable long-term stability. It should be highlighted that the operating potentials can compare favorably with those of some reported H2O2 and N2H4 sensors based on noble metals. In addition, good recoveries and acceptable relative standard deviations (RSDs) attained in serum and water samples fully verify the accuracy and anti-interference capability of our proposed sensor systems. These results not only elucidate an effective structural nanoengineering strategy for electroanalytical science but also advance the rational utilization of H2O2 and N2H4 in practicability.

Abstract
High atomic diffusivity in metals enables substantial tuneability of their structure and properties by tailoring the diffusional processes, but this causes their customized properties to be unstable at elevated temperatures. Eliminating diffusive interfaces by fabricating single crystals or heavily alloying helps to address this issue but does not inhibit atomic diffusion at high homologous temperatures. We discovered that the Schwarz crystal structure was effective at suppressing atomic diffusion in a supersaturated aluminum-magnesium alloy with extremely fine grains. By forming these stable structures, diffusion-controlled intermetallic precipitation from the nanosized grains and their coarsening were inhibited up to the equilibrium melting temperature, around which the apparent across-boundary diffusivity was reduced by about seven orders of magnitude. Developing advanced engineering alloys using the Schwarz crystal structure may lead to useful properties for high-temperature applications.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study investigated the efficacy of annual zoledronic acid (ZOL) administration against previously treated recompression vertebral fractures (RVF) and new vertebral fractures (NVF) in initial percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) over a 3-year follow-up period. INTRODUCTION Although PKP achieves a satisfactory outcome, previously treated RVF and NVF can limit its effectiveness. The annual infusion of ZOL over 3 years can improve fracture protection, particularly in the vertebrae. We hypothesized that ZOL can reduce the incidence of RVFs and/or NVFs, and improve the clinical outcomes of PKP. METHODS This was a placebo-controlled, double-blind prospective trial of 154 PKP patients (mean age: 70 years) with OVCFs. Patients were randomly assigned to receive a single infusion of ZOL (5 mg) or placebo (78 ZOL vs. 76 placebo) at 1 week, 12 months, and 24 months after surgery. Patients were followed-up for 36 months. RESULTS ZOL treatment lowered the risk of RVF by ~ 65% over the 36-month period when compared to placebo controls (6.41% in ZOL vs. 18.42% in placebo groups; relative risk, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.13 to 0.92). ZOL also reduced the risk of NVF by ~ 73% (3.85% in ZOL vs. 14.47% in placebo groups; relative risk, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.08 to 0.92). ZOL also significantly reduced the vertebral height lost rate (HLR) at 12, 24, and 36 months. ZOL also improved the visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores, and bone mineral density (BMD). CONCLUSION Annual ZOL administration significantly lowers the risk of RVFs and NVFs, improving the clinical outcome of initial PKP in patients with OVCFs over a 3-year follow-up period. Abstract
Background: Post-stroke dementia may affect up to one-third of stroke survivors. Acupuncture as a complementary treatment for stroke has been shown to be beneficial for subsequent post-stroke rehabilitation. The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the potential effect of acupuncture to protect stroke patients from dementia. Methods: We included 9,547 patients receiving ambulatory or hospital care for stroke and 9.547 non-stroke patients; patients were matched for sex, age, and Charlson Comorbidity Index. Each individual was traced for the subsequent development of dementia. Two thousand four hundred and forty-nine stroke patients received acupuncture treatment and 7,098 residue stroke patients without acupuncture treatment served as control groups. This is a 3-year follow-up cohorts study: the incidence and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of post- stroke dementia in the Cox proportional hazard regression. Results: During the 3-year follow-up, 1,403 patients with stroke (14.70%) and 427 patients without stroke (4.47%) developed dementia. The adjusted HRs of development of dementia among stroke patients were 3.64-times (range, 3.27–4.06), and the incidence of dementia was higher in male. Stroke patients receiving acupuncture treatment had a lower probability of dementia than those without acupuncture during the follow-up period, the adjusted HRs was 0.49 (95% CI, 0.42–0.58; p < 0.001). Conclusions: The association between stroke and dementia existed in both sexes, more prominent in male. Patients with stroke receiving acupuncture treatments showed decreased risk of dementia. Care must be taken evaluating these results because this study was limited to lack of information regarding lifestyles, stroke severities, and acupuncture methods that were used in treatments.
