Convolutional LSTM-LSTM model for predicting the daily number of influenza patients in South Korea using satellite images

OBJECTIVES

Influenza affects a considerable proportion of the global population each year, and meteorological conditions may have a significant impact on its transmission. In this study, we aimed to develop a prediction model for the number of influenza patients at the national level using satellite images and provide a basis for predicting influenza through satellite image data.

STUDY DESIGN

We developed an influenza incidence prediction model using satellite images and influenza patient data.

METHODS

We collected satellite images and daily influenza patient data from July 2014 to June 2019 and developed a convolutional long short-term memory (LSTM)-LSTM neural network model. The model with the lowest average of mean absolute error (MAE) was selected.

RESULTS

The final model showed a high correlation between the predicted and actual number of influenza patients, with an average MAE of 5.9010 per million population. The model performed best with a 2-week time sequence.

CONCLUSIONS

We developed a national-level prediction model using satellite images to predict influenza incidence. The model offers the advantage of nationwide analysis. These results may reduce the burden of influenza by enabling timely public health interventions.

Activating plant immunity: the hidden dance of intracellular Ca2+ stores

Calcium ion (Ca2+) serves as a versatile and conserved second messenger in orchestrating immune responses. In plants, plasma membrane-localized Ca2+-permeable channels can be activated to induce Ca2+ influx from extracellular space to cytosol upon pathogen infection. Notably, different immune elicitors can induce dynamic Ca2+ signatures in the cytosol. During pattern-triggered immunity, there is a rapid and transient increase in cytosolic Ca2+, whereas in effector-triggered immunity, the elevation of cytosolic Ca2+ is strong and sustained. Numerous Ca2+ sensors are localized in the cytosol or different intracellular organelles, which are responsible for detecting and converting Ca2+ signals. In fact, Ca2+ signaling coordinated by cytosol and subcellular compartments plays a crucial role in activating plant immune responses. However, the complete Ca2+ signaling network in plant cells is still largely ambiguous. This review offers a comprehensive insight into the collaborative role of intracellular Ca2+ stores in shaping the Ca2+ signaling network during plant immunity, and several intriguing questions for future research are highlighted.

Long-term trajectory of ozone impact on maize and soybean yields in the United States: A 40-year spatial-temporal analysis

Understanding the long-term change trends of ozone-induced yield losses is crucial for formulating strategies to alleviate ozone damaging effects, aiming towards achieving the Zero Hunger Sustainable Development Goal. Despite a wealth of experimental research indicating that ozone's influence on agricultural production exhibits marked fluctuations and differs significantly across various geographical locations, previous studies using global statistical models often failed to capture this spatial-temporal variability, leading to uncertainties in ozone impact estimation. To address this issue, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of the spatial-temporal variability of ozone impacts on maize and soybean yields in the United States (1981-2021) using a geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model. Our results revealed that over the past four decades, ozone pollution has led to average yield losses of -3.5% for maize and -6.1% for soybean, translating into an annual economic loss of approximately $2.6 billion. Interestingly, despite an overall downward trend in ozone impacts on crop yields following the implementation of stringent ozone emission control measures in 1997, our study identified distinct peaks of abnormally high yield reduction rates in drought years. Significant spatial heterogeneity was detected in ozone impacts across the study area, with ozone damage hotspots located in the Southeast Region and the Mississippi River Basin for maize and soybean, respectively. Furthermore, we discovered that hydrothermal factors modulate crop responses to ozone, with maize showing an inverted U-shaped yield loss trend with temperature increases, while soybean demonstrated an upward trend. Both crops experienced amplified ozone-induced yield losses with rising precipitation. Overall, our study highlights the necessity of incorporating spatiotemporal variability into assessments of crop yield losses attributable to ozone pollution. The insights garnered from our findings can contribute to the formulation of region-specific pollutant emission policies, based on the distinct profiles of ozone-induced agricultural damage across different regions.

Quantified the influence of different synoptic weather patterns on the transport and local production processes of O3 events in Pearl River Delta, China

Regional ozone (O3) pollution in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region has become a topic of discussion in recent years. The occurrence of regional O3 pollution are influenced by local emissions and cross-regional transportation. In this study, we identified the predominant synoptic patterns that were associated with regional O3 pollution from August to November in 2015-2021 using the Lamb-Jenkinson classification technique. All synoptic types were divided into four major categories of NE-type, C-type, S-type and A-type, which accounted for 42 %, 25 %, 18 % and 15 % of the total number of regional O3 pollution days, respectively. The weather conditions for each synoptic pattern were described by using MERRA-2 datasets. Then a rapidly method was established to quantify the contribution of cross-regional processes to high O3 concentration in different synoptic patterns over the PRD through the WRF-Flexpart model. The NE-type weather condition was characterized by a relatively large wind speed with a significant cross-regional transport contribution of 35.8 %. The A-type weather condition had moderate surface wind speed with the stable weather condition, resulting in a lower cross-region transport contribution of 27.7 %. Under controlled by C-type, the stagnant weather condition caused by low-pressure systems on its periphery, would suppress diffusion of O3. As a result, the regional O3 pollution in the PRD were mostly attributed to locally (87.9 %) with minimal cross-regional transport (12.1 %). The S-type weather condition was mainly associated with the West Pacific Subtropical High and the surface equalization pressure field, accompanied by low wind speed. Therefore, the considerable (minor) contribution of local production (cross-regional transport) of 83.3 % (16.7 %) to O3 pollution in the PRD is a consequence of the stagnation weather condition.

Significant Increase in Ammonia Emissions in China: Considering Nonagricultural Sectors Based on Isotopic Source Apportionment

Isotopic source apportionment results revealed that nonagricultural sectors are significant sources of ammonia (NH3) emissions, particularly in urban areas. Unfortunately, nonagricultural sources have been substantially underrepresented in the current anthropogenic NH3 emission inventories (EIs). Here, we propose a novel approach to develop a gridded EI of nonagricultural NH3 in China for 2016 using a combination of isotopic source apportionment results and the emission ratios of carbon monoxide (CO) and NH3. We estimated that isotope-corrected nonagricultural NH3 emissions were 4370 Gg in China in 2016, accounting for an increase in the total NH3 emissions from 7 to 31%. As a result, compared to the original NH3 EI, the annual emissions of total NH3 increased by 35%. Thus, in comparison to the simulation driven by the original NH3 EI, the WRF-Chem model driven by the isotope-corrected NH3 EI has reduced the model biases in the surface concentrations and dry deposition flux of reduced nitrogen (NHx = gaseous NH3 + particulate NH4+) by 23 and 31%, respectively. This study may have wide-ranging implications for formulating targeted strategies for nonagricultural NH3 emissions controls, making it facilitate the achievement of simultaneously alleviating nitrogen deposition and atmospheric pollution in the future.

Acer truncatum Bunge seed oil ameliorated oxaliplatin-induced demyelination by improving mitochondrial dysfunction via the Pink1/Parkin mitophagy pathway

Dietary nutritional support for special populations is an effective and feasible method to improve the quality of life of patients and reduce medical pressure. Acer truncatum Bunge seed oil (ATSO) is widely recognized for its ability to promote nerve myelin regeneration. To evaluate the ameliorative effects of ATSO on chemotherapy-induced demyelination, a zebrafish model of chemotherapy-induced demyelination was established. The results showed that 100 μg mL-1 of ATSO reversed tail morphology damage, axon degeneration, touch response delay, ROS level upregulation and the expression of myelin basic protein decrease in chemotherapy-induced zebrafish. In addition, the expression of myelin markers (including sox10, krox20, and pmp22) in oxaliplatin-induced cells was markedly reversed by ATSO and its active components (gondoic acid, erucic acid, and nervonic acid). ATSO and its active components could reverse demyelination by ameliorating mitochondrial dysfunction. Conversely, linoleic acid and linolenic acid promoted demyelination by exacerbating mitochondrial dysfunction. Moreover, the Pink1/Parkin pathway was recognized as the main reason for ATSO and its active components improving mitochondrial function by activating mitophagy and restoring autophagic flow. Taken together, this study demonstrated that ATSO and its active components could be further developed as novel functional food ingredients to antagonize demyelination.

Antioxidant interaction between α-tocopherol and γ-oryzanol in HepG2 cells

Minor constituents exhibit certain antioxidant interactions in vitro, and the effects in different media are different. However, it is not clear whether there are antioxidant interactions in cells after digestion and absorption. We utilized the cellular antioxidant evaluation model in HepG2 cells to study the antioxidant interaction between α-tocopherol and γ-oryzanol, and the interaction mechanism of a binary mixture was also illustrated. A cellular antioxidant assay (CAA) model and a combined index (CI) method were firstly used to explore the antioxidant activity and interaction of the binary mixture in HepG2 cells. The CAA value was positively correlated with the single addition concentration, while the results displayed a biphasic tendency with increasing concentrations of the binary mixture. The combination of TO11 (1 μg mL-1 α-tocopherol and 10 μg mL-1 γ-oryzanol) showed the greatest antioxidant activity and synergistic effect, and the maximum CAA value reached up to 94.84 ± 4.2. Then the mechanism of the synergistic antioxidant effect of the binary mixture was explained from three aspects including cellular uptake, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and endogenous enzyme activity. The results demonstrated that the antioxidant interaction of the binary mixture in cells was related to cellular uptake of minor constituents, and the combination of TO11 exerted a synergistic effect by scavenging ROS and up-regulating glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, resulting in the strongest cellular antioxidant activity. This study throws light on the nature of antioxidant interaction between minor constituents, which may contribute to the development of related functional foods and rational dietary collocation.

Gamma music: a new acoustic stimulus for gamma-frequency auditory steady-state response

A frequency range exceeding approximately 30 Hz, denoted as the gamma frequency range, is associated with various cognitive functions, consciousness, sensory integration, short-term memory, working memory, encoding and maintenance of episodic memory, and retrieval processes. In this study, we proposed a new form of gamma stimulation, called gamma music, combining 40 Hz auditory stimuli and music. This gamma music consists of drums, bass, and keyboard sounds, each containing a 40 Hz frequency oscillation. Since 40 Hz stimuli are known to induce an auditory steady-state response (ASSR), we used the 40 Hz power and phase locking index (PLI) as indices of neural activity during sound stimulation. We also recorded subjective ratings of each sound through a questionnaire using a visual analog scale. The gamma music, gamma drums, gamma bass, and gamma keyboard sounds showed significantly higher values in 40 Hz power and PLI compared to the control music without a 40 Hz oscillation. Particularly, the gamma keyboard sound showed a potential to induce strong ASSR, showing high values in these indices. In the subjective ratings, the gamma music, especially the gamma keyboard sound, received more relaxed, comfortable, preferred, pleasant, and natural impressions compared to the control music with conventional gamma stimulation. These results indicate that our proposed gamma music has potential as a new method for inducing ASSR. Particularly, the gamma keyboard sound proved to be an effective acoustic source for inducing a strong ASSR while preserving the comfortable and pleasant sensation of listening to music. Our developed gamma music, characterized by its pleasantness to the human ear, offers a significant advantage for the long-term use of gamma stimulation. The utilization of this music could potentially reduce the physical and psychological burden on participants compared to conventional 40 Hz stimuli. This music is not only expected to contribute to fundamental neuroscience research utilizing ASSR but also to facilitate the implementation of gamma music-based interventions aimed at enhancing human cognitive functions in everyday life.

Influence of monaural auditory stimulation combined with music on brain activity

Introduction

Recently, the increasing attention to mental states and psychophysical health has fueled the research into methods that can aid in relaxation and recovery. Traditional methods like meditation and sauna, while effective, have their limitations; thus, the need for more accessible and convenient alternatives.

Methods

Our innovative approach combines monaural beats with music, attempting to replicate the relaxing effects of a sauna in the auditory domain.

Results

In comparison to normal music and silent condition, the power of the theta active band significantly increased when listening to our modified music. Furthermore, after listening to modified music, there was a significant increase in mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude in the oddball task. Additionally, participants' subjective responses to a questionnaire indicated significant changes in body relaxation and other metrics after listening to the processed music.

Discussion

This state is considered similar to the "totonou" state, which manifests in physical and mental feelings of relaxation, pleasure, and mental clarity in the sauna. Thus, the present research proposes a convenient method for achieving relaxation, opening an avenue for individuals to customize their "totonou" music based on personal preferences.

Assessing the daily natural history of asymptomatic Plasmodium infections in adults and older children in Katakwi, Uganda: a longitudinal cohort study

BACKGROUND

Low-density asymptomatic Plasmodium infections are prevalent in endemic areas, but little is known about their natural history. The trajectories of these infections and their propensity to fluctuate to undetectable densities can affect detection in clinical trials and field studies. We aimed to classify the natural history of these infections in a high transmission area over 29 days.

METHODS

In this longitudinal cohort study, we enrolled healthy, malaria-asymptomatic, afebrile, adults (age 18-59 years) and older children (age 8-17 years) in Katakwi District, Uganda, who were negative for Plasmodium infection on rapid diagnostic tests. Participants were instructed to self-collect one dried blood spot (DBS) per day for a maximum of 29 days. We excluded people if they were pregnant or taking antimalarials. During weekly clinic visits, staff collected a DBS and a 4 mL sample of venous blood. We analysed DBSs by Plasmodium 18S rRNA quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). We classified DBS by infection type as negative, P falciparum, non-P falciparum, or mixed. We plotted infection type over time for each participant and categorised trajectories as negative, new, cleared, chronic, or indeterminate infections. To estimate the effect of single timepoint sampling, we calculated the daily prevalence for each study day and estimated the number of infections that would have been detected in our population if sampling frequency was reduced.

FINDINGS

Between April 9 and May 20, 2021, 3577 DBSs were collected by 128 (40 male adults, 60 female adults, 12 male children, and 16 female children) study participants. 2287 (64%) DBSs were categorised as negative, 751 (21%) as positive for P falciparum, 507 (14%) as positive for non-P falciparum, and 32 (1%) as mixed infections. Daily Plasmodium prevalence in the population ranged from 45·3% (95% CI 36·6-54·1) at baseline to 30·3% (21·9-38·6) on day 24. 37 (95%) of 39 P falciparum and 35 (85%) of 41 non-P falciparum infections would have been detected with every other day sampling, whereas, with weekly sampling, 35 (90%) P falciparum infections and 31 (76%) non-P falciparum infections would have been detected.

INTERPRETATION

Parasite dynamics and species are highly variable among low-density asymptomatic Plasmodium infections. Sampling every other day or every 3 days detected a similar proportion of infections as daily sampling, whereas testing once per week or even less frequently could misclassify up to a third of the infections. Even using highly sensitive diagnostics, single timepoint testing might misclassify the true infection status of an individual.

Molecular detection of pre-ribosomal RNAs of Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin and Mycobacterium tuberculosis to enhance pre-clinical tuberculosis drug and vaccine development

Efforts are underway globally to develop effective vaccines and drugs against M. tuberculosis (Mtb) to reduce the morbidity and mortality of tuberculosis. Improving detection of slow-growing mycobacteria could simplify and accelerate efficacy studies of vaccines and drugs in animal models and human clinical trials. Here, a real-time reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) assay was developed to detect pre-ribosomal RNA (pre-rRNA) of Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and Mtb. This pre-rRNA biomarker is indicative of bacterial viability. In two different mouse models, the presence of pre-rRNA from BCG and Mtb in ex vivo tissues showed excellent agreement with slower culture-based colony-forming unit assays. The addition of a brief nutritional stimulation prior to molecular viability testing further differentiated viable but dormant mycobacteria from dead mycobacteria. This research has set the stage to evaluate pre-rRNA as a BCG and/or Mtb infection biomarker in future drug and vaccine clinical studies.

The impact of COVID-19 on the hot food takeaway planning regulatory environment: perspectives of local authority professionals in the North East of England

AIMS

Planning regulations have been used to prevent the over-proliferation of hot food takeaways, minimising the impact of local obesogenic environments. To help mitigate the effects of lockdown, the UK government introduced temporary changes in March 2020 to Planning Regulations for England, allowing food retailers to open for takeaway services beyond 'ancillary' level without needing to apply for planning permission through permitted development rights (PDR). Businesses are required to notify their local authority (LA) when they implement PDRs. To better understand the impact of regulations on the policy and practice of key professional groups, Public Health England commissioned Teesside University to undertake scoping research in the North East of England.

METHODS

A focus group and interviews were conducted with 15 professionals from 7 of 12 North East LAs. Professions included Planners, Public Health Leads, Environmental Health Officers and Town Centre Managers. Data were analysed using a codebook thematic analysis approach. An interpretation meeting with some participants was conducted.

RESULTS

LAs were not aware of most businesses notifying them of new regulation adherence despite taking up PDRs, but were considered low-priority with many lacking formal recording procedures. There were concerns about health consequences of the changes, and consensus relating to ongoing issues with capacity across all professional groups, largely due to the continuing pandemic and absence of a strategy out of temporary measures. Concerns existed around ensuring cessation of restaurants trading as takeaways, and hygiene inspections backlog. Many (personally) saw new takeaways as a lifeline, offering broader menus and preserving local economies.

CONCLUSION

Lack of information around the number of restaurants/pubs using PDR to trade as takeaway services, ongoing capacity issues of LAs and, at the time, the absence of a strategy post regulation changes, meant there were high levels of uncertainty regarding the impacts of these temporary measures.

Regulate structure and properties of κ-carrageenan/konjac glucomannan composite hydrogel by filling effects of Quillaja saponin-stabilized solid lipid nanostructure

κ-Carrageenan/konjac glucomannan (κ-CA/KGM) composite hydrogels often fail to meet industrial requirements due to their low gel strength and poor mechanical properties, while solid lipid nanoparticles are potential materials to address this challenge due to their good biocompatibility. In the study, we propose using Quillaja saponin-stabilized solid lipid nanoparticle (QSLN) as nanofillers to enhance properties of κ-carrageenan/konjac glucan (κ-CA/KGM) composite hydrogels, and with emphasis on the effect of QSLN filling concentration on the structure and properties of composite hydrogels and the possible mechanisms were investigated. The best performance of QSLN-filled composite hydrogels was achieved at the QSLN concentration of 2.4 %. QSLN was uniformly distributed in the hydrogel matrix and formed electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions with the matrix at an appropriate filling level, which enhanced the textural and rheological properties of the hydrogel greatly. In addition, the results of low-field NMR experiments showed that the filling of QSLN reduced the water mobility by enhancing the entanglement of polymer chains in the hydrogel matrix, which improved the freeze-thaw stability and regulated the swelling and deswelling behavior of the composite hydrogel. However, with the increasing of QSLN filling concentration, the above improvements were weakened by the depletion of van der Waals interactions due to the large amount of QSLN aggregation and the weakening of electrostatic interaction. In turn, the hydrogel was found to modulate the crystalline behavior of QSLN by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter monitoring. Overall, the optimal synergistic effect between structure and properties could be achieved when the QSLN filling concentration was 2.4 %. These results provide a basis for the development of products that require excellent gel properties and structure.

Gemcitabine enhances pharmacokinetic exposure of the major components of Danggui Buxue Decoction in rat via the promotion of intestinal permeability and down-regulation of CYP3A for combination treatment of non-small cell lung cancer

CONTEXT

Danggui Buxue Decoction (DBD), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, has the potential to enhance the antitumor effect of gemcitabine in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment by increasing gemcitabine's active metabolites. However, whether gemcitabine affects the pharmacokinetics of DBD's major components remains unclear.

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluates the herb-drug interaction between DBD's major components and gemcitabine and validates the underlying pharmacokinetic mechanism.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The pharmacokinetics of 3.6 g/kg DBD with and without a single-dose administration of 50 mg/kg gemcitabine was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats. The effects of gemcitabine on intestinal permeability, hepatic microsomal enzymes in rat tissues, and CYP3A overexpressing HepG2 cells were determined using western blot analysis.

RESULTS

The combination of gemcitabine significantly altered the pharmacokinetic profiles of DBD's major components in rats. The Cmax and AUC of calycosin-7-O-β-d-glucoside notably increased through sodium-glucose transporter 1 (SGLT-1) expression promotion. The AUC of ligustilide and ferulic acid was also significantly elevated with the elimination half-life (t1/2) prolonged by 2.4-fold and 7.8-fold, respectively, by down-regulating hepatic CYP3A, tight junction proteins zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin expression.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

Gemcitabine could modulate the pharmacokinetics of DBD's major components by increasing intestinal permeability, enhancing transporter expression, and down-regulating CYP3A. These findings provide critical information for clinical research on DBD as an adjuvant for NSCLC with gemcitabine and help make potential dosage adjustments more scientifically and rationally.

Preventing Teen Pregnancy: A Qualitative Study of the Perspectives of Parenting and Expecting Latino Adolescents

STUDY OBJECTIVE

Latino youths in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of teen pregnancy. The aim of this study was to obtain expecting and parenting Latino adolescents' perspectives regarding factors contributing to teen pregnancy and pregnancy prevention.

METHODS

Expecting/parenting Latino adolescents were recruited from high schools with high proportions of Latino youths and teen pregnancy. Participants completed a questionnaire on sociodemographic and background characteristics. Focus groups were stratified by age and gender and audio recorded. Grounded theory was used to identify themes from the transcribed audio recordings.

RESULTS

Thirty-two expecting/parenting Latino adolescents (20 females, 12 males) 14-19 years old participated in four focus groups. Quantitative results revealed that two-thirds of participants at birth had adolescent mothers. Over three-quarters of participants reported that their pregnancies had occurred too soon. Qualitative themes for factors contributing to teen pregnancy included lack of contraceptive knowledge/access, belief of invincibility, influence within relationships, male decisions on contraceptive use, desire to belong among peers, lack of parental support for contraceptive use, lack of parental attention, rebellion, normalization of adolescent parenthood in Latino culture, and media. Themes for pregnancy prevention included time alone with physicians, parenting teens as mentors, reproductive health education, and community pregnancy-prevention programs.

CONCLUSION

Multiple factors contribute to teen pregnancy in Latino youth, including influences from Latino culture, family, peers, partners, and social determinants of health. Pregnancy prevention should incorporate interventions to address these aspects, including disseminating culturally sensitive education materials, providing parenting teens as peer mentors, encouraging time alone with health care providers, and addressing various social determinants of health.

Application of small angle X-ray scattering in exploring the effect of edible oils with different unsaturation FAs on bioaccessibility of stigmasterol oleate

BACKGROUND

Phytosterol can improve its lipid solubility, lipophilic/hydrophilic balance and bioaccessibility by esterification with fatty acids, which increases its practical application range in the food industry. In the present study, small angle X-ray scattering combined with the pH-stat in vitro digestion model was applied to continuously monitor the molecular structure evolution of mixed micelles during digestion and investigate the effect of three edible oils (olive oil with 72.41 ± 0.57% oleic, sunflower seed oil with 63.45 ± 0.78% linoleic, refined linseed oil with 51.74 ± 0.34% linolenic) on bioaccessibility of stigmasterol oleate in vitro.

RESULTS

The release degree and rate of fatty acids in the three edible oil systems (kOO+ST-OA  = 0.0501, kSO+ ST-OA  = 0.0357, kLO+ST-OA  = 0.0323) was compared. The three different edible oils had similar impact on the formation of dietary mixed micelles during the simulatedin vitro digestion of stigmasterol oleate, although there were significant differences in molecular morphology and composition of mixed micelles. The results showed that the vesicles formed by linoleic oil (SO system) or linolenic oil (LO system) were easy to dissociate. The largest average number and diameter of vesicles (5.55 × 1016  cm-3 and 2230.75 Å), the most stable vesicle structure and the fastest fatty acid release rate were observed in the OO system.

CONCLUSION

Compared to linoleic (SO system) or linolenic (LO system), the oleic (OO system) could facilitate the transformation of micelles to vesicles and maintain the stability of its membrane, significantly promotin the dissolution of stigmasterol and improving bioaccessibility. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

A study on neural changes induced by sauna bathing: Neural basis of the "totonou" state

Saunas are becoming increasingly popular worldwide, being an activity that promotes relaxation and health. Intense feelings of happiness have been reported shortly after enjoying a hot sauna and cold water, what is known in Japan as the "totonou" state. However, no research has investigated what occurs in the brain during the "totonou" state. In the present study, participants underwent a sauna phase, consisting of three sets of alternating hot sauna, cold water, and rest. We elucidated changes in brain activity and mood in the "totonou" state by measuring and comparing brain activity and emotional scales before and after the sauna phase and during the rest phase in each set. We found significant increases in theta and alpha power during rest and after the sauna phase compared to before the sauna phase. Moreover, in an auditory oddball task, the p300 amplitude decreased significantly and MMN amplitude increased significantly after the sauna phase. The increase in MMN indicates higher activation of the pre-attentional auditory process, leading to a decrease in attention-related brain activity P300. Hence, the brain reaches in a more efficient state. Further, the response time in behavioral tasks decreased significantly. In addition, the participants' subjective responses to the questionnaire showed significant changes in physical relaxation and other indicators after being in the sauna. Finally, we developed an artificial intelligence classifier, obtaining an average accuracy of brain state classification of 88.34%. The results have potential for future application.

From association to gist: Some critical tests

We report the first evidence that the gist mechanism of fuzzy-trace theory and the associative mechanism of activation monitoring theory operate in parallel, in the recall version of the Deese/Roediger/McDermott illusion. In three experiments, we implemented a new methodology that allows their respective empirical indexes, gist strength (GS) and backward associative strength (BAS), to each be manipulated while the other is held constant. In Experiment 1, increasing GS increased false recall of missing words, but increasing BAS did not. In Experiments 2 and 3, however, increasing GS and increasing BAS both increased recall of missing words, and those effects were independent and additive. In all three experiments, GS and BAS affected true recall of list words in qualitatively different ways: (a) Increasing GS always improved true recall, regardless of whether BAS was high or low, but (b) increasing BAS impaired true recall when GS was high and improved true recall when GS was low. To pinpoint the retrieval loci of the two variables' effects, we analyzed the data of all experiments with the dual-retrieval model. The Interplay of Permeability, Metabolism, Transporters, and Dosing in Determining the Dynamics of the Tissue/Plasma Partition Coefficient and Volume of Distribution-A Theoretical Investigation Using Permeability-Limited, Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling

A permeability-limited physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model featuring four subcompartments (corresponding to the intracellular and extracellular water of the tissue, the residual plasma, and blood cells) for each tissue has been developed in MATLAB/SimBiology and applied to various what-if scenario simulations. This model allowed us to explore the complex interplay of passive permeability, metabolism in tissue or residual blood, active uptake or efflux transporters, and different dosing routes (intravenous (IV) or oral (PO)) in determining the dynamics of the tissue/plasma partition coefficient (Kp) and volume of distribution (Vd) within a realistic pseudo-steady state. Based on the modeling exercise, the permeability, metabolism, and transporters demonstrated significant effects on the dynamics of the Kp and Vd for IV bolus administration and PO fast absorption, but these effects were not as pronounced for IV infusion or PO slow absorption. Especially for low-permeability compounds, uptake transporters were found to increase both the Kp and Vd at the pseudo-steady state (Vdss), while efflux transporters had the opposite effect of decreasing the Kp and Vdss. For IV bolus administration and PO fast absorption, increasing tissue metabolism was predicted to elevate the Kp and Vdss, which contrasted with the traditional derivation from the steady-state perfusion-limited PBPK model. Moreover, metabolism in the residual blood had more impact on the Kp and Vdss compared to metabolism in tissue. Due to its ability to offer a more realistic description of tissue dynamics, the permeability-limited PBPK model is expected to gain broader acceptance in describing clinical PK and observed Kp and Vdss, even for certain small molecules like cyclosporine, which are currently treated as perfusion-limited in commercial PBPK platforms.

How the black hole illusion environment affects operational performance at different flight phases in aviation

The black hole illusion (BHI) is a subtype of spatial disorientation that can result in fatal consequences in aviation. Research on the BHI has generally focused on altitude deviation, and few studies have examined the effect across different flight phases. In a simulation-based experiment, 18 participants performed 12 simulated approach and landing tasks in normal and BHI environments. Flight performance was analyzed with 14 flight parameters and was compared across five points and three phases, which were referenced from a National Transportation Safety Board report and other previous studies. Results showed that multiple flight parameters were significantly impaired and that their influences varied from the initial approach to the final touchdown. In the BHI environment, participants tended to descend aggressively during the approach phase and flew a lower but similar glidepath during the last approach phase. They might have realized the abnormal situation induced by the BHI but usually were unable to recover from the dangerous maneuver in time. Additionally, the result of glide path error, one of the most commonly used variables in previous BHI research, was only significant during the last approach phase. Flight stability was also impaired in the BHI environment. This is the first study to systematically analyze the BHI effects on multiple flight parameters at different flight phases. The use of this experimental paradigm could facilitate future research to evaluate and prevent the BHI in a more comprehensive way.

Regulatory mechanisms to create healthier environments: planning appeals and hot food takeaways in England

AIMS

To explore existing regulatory mechanisms to restrict hot food takeaway (HFT) outlets through further understanding processes at local and national levels.

METHODS

The Planning Appeals Portal was utilised to identify recent HFT appeal cases across England between December 2016 and March 2020. Eight case study sites were identified using a purposive sampling technique and interviews carried out with 12 professionals involved in planning and health to explore perceptions of and including factors that may impact on the HFT appeal process. Additionally, documents applicable to each case were analysed and a survey completed by seven Local Authority (LA) health professionals. To confirm findings, interpretation meetings were conducted with participants and a wider group of planning and public health professionals, including a representative from the Planning Inspectorate.

RESULTS

Eight case study sites were identified, and 12 interviews conducted. Participants perceived that LAs would be better able to work on HFT appeal cases if professionals had a good understanding of the planning process/the application of local planning policy and supplementary planning documents; adequate time and capacity to deal with appeals cases; access to accurate, robust, and up to date information; support and commitment from elected members and senior management; good lines of communication with local groups/communities interested in the appeal; information and resources that are accessible and easy to interpret across professional groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Communication across professional groups appeared to be a key factor in successfully defending decisions. Understanding the impact of takeaway outlets on health and communities in the long term was also important. To create a more robust appeals case and facilitate responsiveness, professionals involved in an appeal should know where to locate current records and statistical data. The enthusiasm of staff and support from senior management/elected officials will play a significant role in driving these agendas forward.

Protective Effect of Orbitides from Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) against Ultraviolet B-induced Photoaging in Zebrafish

Excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure is the primary environmental factor that contributes to skin aging. Orbitides have been considered as important functional components in linseed, and they are complex and multiple. In this study, linseed orbitides (LOs) were divided into oxidized linseed orbitides (OLOs) and reduced linseed orbitides (RLOs) and used to investigate protection against ultraviolet B-induced photoaging in zebrafish. First, the results of the zebrafish embryo acute toxicity test showed that the OLOs had obvious embryo toxicity compared with RLOs. And RLOs had better effect in ultraviolet B-treated zebrafish, which may significantly reduce the reactive oxygen species levels and inhibit the degradation of collagen. Besides, we also found that RLOs could effectively inhibit the oxidation of proteins and lipids and regulate the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, neutrophil recruitment to the dorsal and caudal fin regions was observed in UVB-treated zebrafish, and RLOs effectively alleviated this migration. In conclusion, RLOs have strong photoprotective effects and potential to be used as antiphotoaging ingredients.

Memory effects of semantic attributes: A method of controlling attribute contamination

Rating norms for semantic attributes (e.g., concreteness, familiarity, valence) are widely used to study the content that people process as they encode meaningful material. Intensity ratings of individual attributes have been manipulated in numerous experiments with a range of memory paradigms, but those manipulations are contaminated by substantial correlations with the intensity ratings of other attributes. A method of controlling such contamination is needed, which requires a determination of how many distinct attributes there are among the large collection of attributes for which published norms are available. Identification of overlapping words in multiple rating projects yielded a data base containing normed values for each word's perceived intensity (M rating) and ambiguity (rating SD) on 20 different attributes. Principal component analyses then revealed that the intensity space was spanned by just three latent semantic attributes, and the ambiguity space was spanned by five. Psychologically, the big three intensity factors (emotional valence, size, age) were highly interpretable, as were the big five ambiguity factors (discrete emotion, emotional valence, age, meaningfulness, and verbatim memory). We provide a data base of intensity and ambiguity factor scores that can be used to conduct uncontaminated studies of the memory effects of the intensity and ambiguity of latent semantic attributes.

Genomic features of recombinant CHO clones arising from transposon-based and randomized integration

The use of transposase in cell line development (CLD) programs has experienced increased popularity over the past decade. However, few studies have described the mechanism of action and the genomic and phenotypic characteristics of clones derived from transposase. Additionally, how these traits impact long-term bioproduction is unknown. Here, we use chromosome painting, deep sequencing, and ddPCR to characterize the unique fingerprints associated with transposase-derived clones. Transposase reduces the cellular pool of transient vector as early as three days post transfection following transfection and expedites stable pool establishment by up to two weeks. Furthermore, recombinant DNA expression is significantly improved up to ∼3 fold along with a greater balance of antibody heavy and light chain transcripts, resulting in higher titers in transposase generated pools. Transposase derived pools contained an often innumerable number of integration sites, representing a vast increase in integration site diversity over randomly generated pools, which were bottlenecked at 1-3 integration sites per pool. These transposase mediated integrations typically occurred in clean singlets, free of genomic scars such as deletions, inversions, and other modifications associated with legacy transfection methods which exhibited higher copy numbers per integration site. Relative declines in gene expression occur with copy number increase in the randomly generated, but not the transposase derived clones. Furthermore, transposase-derived clones were more likely to exhibit enhanced a long term stability profile, including product quality attributes such as mannose-5. This improved stability may result from circumventing mechanisms associated with the silencing of tandem repeats. Thus, transposase-mediated approaches can provide multifaceted molecular and phenotypic advantages in cell line development when compared to legacy random-integration methods.

Evaluation on coupling coordinated development of population economy and eco-geological environment in the twin-city economic circle of Chengdu-Chongqing region

Using the CRITIC method, comprehensive index evaluation method, VAR model, coupling coordination model and other methods, this paper evaluates the comprehensive development of the population economy and eco-geological environment composite system in the twin-city economic circle of Chengdu-Chongqing region from 2000 to 2020, verifies the dynamic coupling relationship between subsystems and measures the coupling coordination degree of complex system. Meanwhile, the differences in the development process of each subsystem are discussed and the spatial-temporal evolution characteristics and laws of coupling coordination of the composite system during the research period are analyzed. The results reveal the following: (1) There is a long-term coordinated relationship between population, economy and eco-geological environment in Chengdu-Chongqing region, which have the conditions for emergence and generation. (2) The subsystems of population, economy and eco-geological environment in Chengdu-Chongqing region show an overall upward trend, among which the Sichuan part obviously outperforms the Chongqing part. Besides, the growth rate of the economy subsystem is significantly higher than that of the population, eco-geological environment subsystem. (3) The coupling coordinated development of the composite system has shown a benign upward development trend, gradually changing from "composite spiral structure" to "two cores outstanding, peripheral collapse, the west superior to the east", while the main coordination state has developed from "Basic synergy-Economic lag" in 2000 to "Basic synergy-Population lag" in 2022. In addition, Cheng-De-Mian and Yuzhong districts with the better level of economic development have shown "Advanced synergy-Ecological lag".

Synthesis of eicosapentaenoic acid-enriched medium- and long-chain triglyceride by lipase-catalyzed transesterification: a novel strategy for clinical nutrition intervention

BACKGROUND

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been recognized as a promising nutrient to improve therapeutic efficacy for cancer patients. Nevertheless, there are certain limitations to the application of EPA due to its structural characteristics. To maximize the nutritive value of EPA, a type of medium- and long-chain triacylglycerol (MLCT) enriched with EPA was designed and synthesized using the lipase-catalyzed transesterification of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) and EPA-enriched fish oil (FO).

RESULTS

The optimum synthesis conditions for EPA-enriched MLCT used Lipozyme RM as catalyst, and had a substrate mass ratio (MCT/EPA-enriched FO) of 3:1, lipase loading of 80 g kg^-1 , a reaction temperature of 60 °C, and a reaction time of 6 h. The MLCT content was as high as 80.79% after the transesterification reaction and the purification, and the content of MLCT containing EPA accounted for 70.21%. The distribution of EPA at the sn-2 position showed a significant increase in MLCT compared with the original substrate, from 18.89% to 26.93%. The in vitro digestion results demonstrated that MLCT had a significantly higher EPA bioaccessibility than the original substrate.

CONCLUSION

Eicosapentaenoic acid-enriched MLCT was developed. This may provide a novel strategy for clinical nutritional intervention. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

[Quantification of Ozone Pollution Transport Based on Four-dimensional Flux Method in Foshan, China]

Quantifying the contribution of transport processes to air pollution events has been a prominent challenge and an important need in regional air pollution prevention and control. The WRF-Chem model was used to simulate a typical regional ozone (O3) pollution event in Foshan, and the four-dimensional flux method was applied to quantify the transport fluxes of ozone and its precursors from the surrounding areas to Foshan and to clarify the contributions of the direct transport of ozone and transport of precursors. The average ozone flux from the surrounding areas to Foshan was 120.3 t·h-1, the volatile organic compound (VOCs) flux was 30.2 t·h-1, and the corresponding ozone formation potential (OFP) was 114.8 t·h-1. By counting the transport fluxes of each ozone pollution event, it was found that the city with the largest ozone flux into Foshan during the pollution period was Guangzhou (contributed 44%); the city with the largest input VOCs flux was Zhaoqing (contributed 48%). The analysis of ozone generation potential due to transported VOCs emissions found that oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) contributed the most to OFP, accounting for 47% of the "maximum input events." OVOCs and aromatic hydrocarbons such as formaldehyde, xylenes, aldehydes, acetone, and phenols were the top five species contributing to the OFP, contributing more than 50% of the total OFP, mainly from industrial solvent sources.

Structural Characterization and Molecular Model Construction of High-Ash Coal from Northern China

High-ash coal, also known as low-grade coal, has becomes a viable alternative in recent years to high-quality coal because available resources have become increasingly scarce due to extensive mining activity. This work aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structural characteristics of high-ash coal and construct a plausible molecular structure to elucidate its chemical reactivity in future applications. Its properties were investigated using Solid-state ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (¹³C NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The molecular structure was constructed and validated using Material Studio, LAMMPS Software Package, and MATLAB program. The characterization results revealed that high-ash coal contains 72.15% aromatic carbon, significantly surpassing the percentage of aliphatic carbon (27.85%). The ratio of bridgehead carbon to peripheral aromatic carbon was calculated as 0.67, indicating that the pentacene is the main carbon skeleton form in the high-ash coal structure. Furthermore, oxygen-containing functional groups presented as C=O/O-C-O, C-O, and COO- within the structure along with pyridine and pyrrolic structures. Consequently, the molecular structure comprises pentacene with aliphatic carbon chains, such as methylene, that connect the benzene rings and form a three-dimensional network. The results of a simulated IR spectrum and contact angle simulation aligned with the experimental results, validating the molecular structure of high-ash coal. The chemical formula for the high-ash coal model was determined as C₂₀₃H₁₈₉N₇O₆₁S with a molecular weight of 3734.79.

[Clinical observation of bow-tie adjustable suture technique for overcorrection in intermittent exotropia]

Objective: To investigate the clinical effects of the bow-tie adjustable suture technique in managing overcorrection in patients with intermittent exotropia after surgery. Methods: This was a retrospective case series study. Clinical data were collected from children with intermittent exotropia who underwent strabismus correction surgery, including the bow-tie adjustable suture technique and conventional techniques, at the Department of Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology, Shanxi Eye Hospital, from January 2020 to September 2021. Children with postoperative esodeviation≥15 prism diopters (PD) within the first 6 days were treated differently based on the surgical technique and their individual conditions, including suture adjustment and conservative treatment. The overcorrection rate and its changes among different surgical groups, the recovery of ocular alignment and binocular visual function after different treatment methods in children with overcorrection on the sixth postoperative day, and the postoperative complications in different surgical groups were observed. Statistical analysis was performed using independent samples t-test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, repeated-measures analysis of variance, Bonferroni test, chi-square test, or Fisher's exact probability test, as appropriate. Results: A total of 643 children who underwent intermittent exotropia correction surgery were included in the study. Among them, 325 children underwent the bow-tie adjustable suture technique, with 185 males and 140 females, and the mean age was (9.50±2.69) years. The remaining 318 children underwent conventional techniques, with 176 males and 142 females, and the mean age was (9.90±2.67) years. There were no statistically significant differences in age and gender distribution between the two surgical groups (all P>0.05). On the first postoperative day, among children who underwent the bow-tie adjustable suture technique, 40 had an esodeviation of≥10 PD, resulting in an overcorrection rate of 12.3% (40/325), while among children who underwent conventional techniques, 32 had an esodeviation of≥10 PD, resulting in an overcorrection rate of 10.1% (32/318). On the sixth postoperative day, these rates decreased to 5.5% (18/325) and 3.1% (10/318) in the two groups, respectively. At 1, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, the overcorrection rate in children who underwent the bow-tie adjustable suture technique was 0, while in children who underwent conventional techniques, the overcorrection rate did not show a significant decrease compared to before surgery. The differences between the two surgical groups were statistically significant (all P<0.05). On the sixth postoperative day, among children with an esodeviation of≥15 PD, 13 underwent suture adjustment and 7 received conservative treatment. The results of repeated-measures analysis of variance showed statistically significant differences in near and distance esodeviation angles among children who received different treatment methods (F=145.20, 106.87, both P<0.001), as well as statistically significant differences in near and distance esodeviation angles at different time points within each group of children (F=81.67, 35.09, both P<0.001). There were also significant differences in the trends of change in near and distance esodeviation angles at different time points among children who received different treatment methods (F=79.90, 36.73, both P<0.001). Further pairwise comparisons showed significant differences in near and distance esodeviation angles between the sixth postoperative day and 1, 6, and 12 months postoperatively in children who underwent suture adjustment (all P<0.05), while no statistically significant differences were observed in children who received conservative treatment (all P>0.05). At 12 months postoperatively, among the 13 children who underwent suture adjustment, 12 achieved stereopsis, while among the 7 children who received conservative treatment, all became stereo-blind after removing the prismatic correction. No serious complications occurred in any of the children postoperatively. Conclusion: The proportion of children with intermittent exotropia who achieved orthotropic alignment one year after surgery was relatively low among those who had an overcorrection of≥15 PD on the sixth postoperative day. The bow-tie adjustable suture technique is a simple and effective approach for managing overcorrection in patients with intermittent exotropia. Adjusting the sutures on the sixth postoperative day can reduce the overcorrection rate and is considered a safe and effective method.

Adsorption of Different Ionic Types of Polyacrylamide on Montmorillonite Surface: Insight from QCM-D and Molecular Dynamic Simulation

This study investigates the interaction between montmorillonite and polyacrylamide (PAM) with different ionic types using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The goal was to understand the effect of ionicity and ionic type on polymer deposition on montmorillonite surfaces. The results of the QCM-D analysis showed that a decrease in pH led to an increase in the adsorption of montmorillonite on the alumina surface. The ranking of adsorption mass on alumina and pre-adsorbed montmorillonite alumina surfaces was found to be cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) > polyacrylamide (NPAM) > anionic polyacrylamide (APAM). The study also found that CPAM had the strongest bridging effect on montmorillonite nanoparticles, followed by NPAM, while APAM had a negligible bridging effect. The MD simulations showed that ionicity had a significant influence on the adsorption of polyacrylamides. The cationic functional group N(CH₃)³⁺ had the strongest attraction interaction with the montmorillonite surface, followed by the hydrogen bonding interaction of the amide functional group CONH₂, and the anionic functional group COO- had a repulsive interaction. The results suggest that at high ionicity levels, CPAM can be adsorbed on the montmorillonite surface, while at low ionicity levels, APAM may still be adsorbed with a strong coordination trend.

Enzymatic enrichment of acylglycerols rich in n - 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids by selective methanolysis: Optimization and kinetic studies

n - 3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids (n - 3 PUFA) have special physiological effect, but their contents in natural oils may not meet the growing demand. Lipase-catalyzed selective methanolysis could be used to produce acylglycerols rich in n - 3 PUFA. To explore the kinetics of enzymatic methanolysis, factors affecting the reaction, including reaction system, water content, substrate molar ratio, temperature, lipase loading, and reaction time, were first investigated in the view of optimizing the reaction. Then the effects of triacylglycerol concentrations and methanol concentrations on initial reaction rate were studied. Finally, the key kinetic parameters of methanolysis were determined subsequently. The results showed that under optimal conditions, the n - 3 PUFA content in acylglycerols increased from 39.88% to 71.41%, and the n - 3 PUFA yield was 73.67%. The reaction followed a Ping-Pong Bi Bi mechanism with inhibition by methanol. The kinetic analysis indicated the lipase could selectively remove saturated fatty acids (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in acylglycerols. The inhibition constant of methanol to the n - 3 PUFA (K_iM , 0.30 mmol/L) was lower than that to the SFA and MUFA (219.64 and 79.71 mmol/L). The combined effects of the fatty acid selectivity of Candida antarctica lipase A and methanol inhibition resulted in an enrichment of n - 3 PUFA in acylglycerols. Overall, the methanolysis reaction catalyzed by the lipase A is a prospective enrichment method. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study demonstrated that enzymatic selective methanolysis is a prospective enrichment method to produce acylglycerols rich in n - 3 PUFA. This method is highly efficient, environment-friendly, and simple. n - 3 PUFA concentrates have been widely applied in the food, health-care food, and pharmaceutical industries.

Modeling regional nitrogen cycle in the atmosphere: Present situation and its response to the future emissions control strategy

Reactive nitrogen (Nr) cycle in the atmosphere has an important affection on terrestrial ecosystems, which has not been fully understood and its response to the future emissions control strategy is not clear. Taking the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) as an example, we explored the regional Nr cycle (emissions, concentrations, and depositions) and its source apportionment in the atmosphere in January (winter) and July (summer) 2015 and projected its changes under emissions control by 2030 using the CMAQ model. We examined the characteristics of Nr cycle and found that Nr suspends in the air mainly as NO, NO₂, and NH₃ gases and deposits to the earth's surface mainly as HNO₃, NH₃, NO₃^-, and NH₄⁺. Due to the higher NO_x than NH₃ emissions, oxidized nitrogen (OXN) but not reduced nitrogen (RDN) is the major component in Nr concentration and deposition, especially in January. Nr concentration and deposition show an inverse correlation, with a high concentration in January and low in July but the opposite for deposition. We further apportioned the regional Nr sources for both concentration and deposition using the Integrated Source Apportionment Method (ISAM) incorporated in the CMAQ model. It shows that local emissions are the major contributors and this characteristic is more significant in concentration than deposition, for RDN than OXN species, and in July than in January. The contribution from North China (NC) is important for Nr in YRD, especially in January. In addition, we revealed the response of Nr concentration and deposition to the emission control to achieve the target of carbon peak in the year 2030. After the emission reduction, the relative responses of OXN concentration and deposition are generally about 100 % to the reduction of NO_x emissions (~50 %), while the relative responses of RDN concentration are higher than 100 % and the relative responses of RDN deposition are significantly lower than 100 % to the reduction of NH₃ emissions (~22 %). Consequently, RDN will become the major component in Nr deposition. The smaller reduction of RDN wet deposition than sulfur wet deposition and OXN wet deposition will raise the pH of precipitation and help alleviate the acid rain problem, especially in July.

Impact of α-tocopherol and EGCG on the oxidative stability of margarine: Exploring the possible synergistic effect mechanism

Margarine is a typical water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion fat product. Due to the presence of a water-oil interface, the oil oxidation in the emulsion system is the interface reaction, which is much faster than that in bulk oil and shows different oxidation mechanisms. The analysis of Rancimat and electron spin resonance indicated that α-tocopherol and EGCG show synergistic antioxidant effects in the margarine. After 20 days of accelerated oxidation storage, the antioxidant effect of the compound antioxidant (50 mg/kg α-tocopherol + 350 mg/kg EGCG) on the margarine was significantly higher than that of the single antioxidant α-tocopherol and EGCG. Based on the results of antioxidants partitioning, electrochemistry, fluorescence spectroscopy, and the oxidative decomposition of antioxidants, the possible mechanisms of interaction were the promotion of α-tocopherol regeneration by EGCG, and the fact that α-tocopherol and EGCG could act at different stages and positions of oxidation. This work will contribute to studying antioxidant interactions and can provide valuable suggestions for practical production. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study aims to improve the oxidative stability of margarine by adding α-tocopherol and epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) individually and in blends. The mechanism of compound antioxidant synergistic inhibition of margarine oxidation was analyzed, providing theoretical basis and scientific basis for the research and practical application of natural antioxidant synergistic mechanism.

Plasmodium 18S Ribosomal RNA Biomarker Clearance After Food and Drug Administration-Approved Antimalarial Treatment in Controlled Human Malaria Infection Trials

Background

Sensitive molecular assays, such as quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) of Plasmodium 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), are increasingly the primary method of detecting infections in controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) trials. However, thick blood smears (TBSs) remain the main method for confirming clearance of parasites after curative treatment, in part owing to uncertainty regarding biomarker clearance rates.

Methods

For this analysis, 18S rRNA qRT-PCR data were compiled from 127 Plasmodium falciparum-infected participants treated with chloroquine or atovaquone-proguanil in 6 CHMI studies conducted in Seattle, Washington, over the past decade. A survival analysis approach was used to compare biomarker and TBS clearance times among studies. The effect of the parasite density at which treatment was initiated on clearance time was estimated using linear regression.

Results

The median time to biomarker clearance was 3 days (interquartile range, 3-5 days), while the median time to TBS clearance was 1 day (1-2 days). Time to biomarker clearance increased with the parasite density at which treatment was initiated. Parasite density did not have a significant effect on TBS clearance.

Conclusions

The Plasmodium 18S rRNA biomarker clears quickly and can be relied on to confirm the adequacy of Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments in CHMI studies at nonendemic sites.

How does agricultural industrial structure upgrading affect agricultural carbon emissions? Threshold effects analysis for China

China continues to emphasize the importance of reducing agricultural carbon emissions and promoting the upgrading of its agricultural industry structure. However, the relationship between the two is rarely examined. This study aims to investigate the impact of upgrading the agricultural industry structure on agricultural carbon emissions. A two-stage instrumental technique and a threshold regression model are used in this study's analysis. The results indicate that agricultural industrial structure upgrading reduces agricultural carbon emissions by a statistically significant amount above the threshold of 0.378. The examination of the underlying mechanism shows agricultural energy efficiency and off-farm work as mediators of the nonlinear relationship between agricultural industrial structure upgrading and agricultural carbon emissions. Only when the agricultural energy efficiency and off-farm work thresholds are surpassed can improving the structure of the agricultural industry minimize agricultural carbon emissions. Analysis of heterogeneity indicates that the threshold for lowering agricultural carbon emissions is greater in northern China, but the potential for reduction is greater.

Effects of Medium- and Long-Chain Structured Triacylglycerol on the Therapeutic Efficacy of Vitamin D on Ulcerative Colitis: A Consideration for Efficient Lipid Delivery Systems

Due to intestinal malabsorption and poor water solubility, vitamin D (VitD) deficiency in ulcerative colitis (UC) continues to increase. Medium- and long-chain triacylglycerols (MLCT), as novel lipids, have been widely applied in the field of functional food and medicine nutrition. Our previous studies showed that the difference in MLCT structure could affect VitD bioaccessibility in vitro. In this study, our results further indicate that, although identical in fatty acid composition, structured triacylglycerol (STG) had a higher VitD bioavailability (AUC = 15470.81 μg/L × h) and metabolism efficacy [s-25(OH)D, p < 0.05] than physical mixtures of triacylglycerol (PM), which further affect the amelioration efficiency in UC mice. Compared with PM, the damage of colonic tissues, intestinal barrier proteins, and inflammatory cytokines in STG showed better amelioration at the same dose of VitD. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of nutrients in different carriers and a solution for developing nutrients with high absorption efficiency.

The Evolution of Landscape Patterns and Its Ecological Effects of Open-Pit Mining: A Case Study in the Heidaigou Mining Area, China

This paper investigates the impact of land use/cover type changes in the Haideigou open-pit coal mine on the evolution of the landscape patterns and ecological and environmental quality in the mine area, based on medium- and high-resolution remote sensing images in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021 using ArcGIS 10.5, Fragstats 4.2, and the Google Earth Engine platform. The results show that: (1) From 2006 to 2021, the area of cropland and waste dumps in the Heidaigou mining area changed significantly, the land use shifted in a single direction, and the overall land use change was unbalanced. (2) Through the analysis of landscape indicators, it was shown that the diversity of the landscape patches in the study area increased, connectivity decreased, and the patches became more fragmented. (3) Based on the changes in the mean value of the RSEI over the past 15 years, the ecological environment quality of the mining area deteriorated first and then improved. The quality of the ecological environment in the mining area was significantly affected by human activities. This study provides an important basis for achieving the sustainability and stability of ecological environmental development in mining areas.

Identification and deformation analysis of potential landslides after the Jiuzhaigou earthquake by SBAS-InSAR

A World Natural Heritage Site, Jiuzhaigou, is the first nature reserve in China whose primary purpose is to protect natural scenery. On August 8, 2017, a M_s 7.0 earthquake caused many unstable slopes in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan Province, China. In the extreme storm conditions that follow, the unstable slopes tend to develop into potential landslides, which can cause many casualties and property losses in scenic areas. Sentinel-1A ascending orbit data were obtained in this paper to establish a SAR database. The large-scale deformation rate map of the study area was obtained using a small baseline set InSAR technology. The potential landslides in the deformation area are preliminarily confirmed with remote sensing interpretation. The field verification is further carried out by studying the deformation information of the characteristic points on the potential landslides. The results show that 13 deformation zones were preliminarily identified, and three typical deformation zones were selected for coupling verification and identified as potential landslides. At the same time, further analysis shows that the four potential landslides have been in continuous linear deformation for a long time since the earthquake, posing a severe threat to the safety of local people's lives and property. The research results provide a reference for the early identification and warning of potential landslides in earthquake-prone regions.

The big three: Accuracy, organization, and retrieval effects of latent semantic attributes

Rating norms for semantic attributes (e.g., concreteness, dominance, familiarity, and valence) are widely used in many psychological literatures to study the effects of processing specific types of semantic content. Word and picture norms for many attributes are available for thousands of items, but there is a contamination problem in experimentation. When an attribute's ratings are varied, how the semantic content that people process changes is unclear because ratings of individual attributes are correlated with ratings of so many other attributes. To solve this problem, the psychological space that 20 attributes occupy has been mapped, and factor score norms have been published for the latent attributes that generate that space (emotional valence, age-of-acquisition, and symbolic size). These latent attributes have yet to be manipulated in experimentation, and hence, their effects are unknown. We conducted a series of experiments that focused on whether they affect accuracy, memory organization, and specific retrieval processes. We found that (a) all three latent attributes affected recall accuracy, (b) all three affected memory organization in recall protocols, and (c) all three affected direct verbatim access, rather than reconstruction or familiarity. The memory effects of two of them (valence and age-of-acquisition) were unconditional, but memory effects were only detected for the third at particular levels of the other two. The key implications are that semantic attributes can now be cleanly manipulated, and when they are, they have broad downstream effects on memory. Linolenic acid ameliorates sarcopenia in C. elegans by promoting mitophagy and fighting oxidative stress

Sarcopenia is a syndrome of age-related loss of muscle mass and strength that seriously affects human health, and there are currently no effective drugs to treat the disease. Linolenic acid as a common n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) is known to have many beneficial functions. Some studies have found that n-3 PUFA might have the potential to improve sarcopenia. In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) was used as a model animal to investigate the effects of linolenic acid on C. elegans muscles. The results showed that 50 μg mL^-1 linolenic acid significantly improved sarcopenia by repairing mitochondrial function by promoting mitophagy and fighting oxidative stress (p < 0.05). This included the increase of the expression of the mitophagy gene pink-1 and DAF-16/FOXO transcription factors, respectively, by linolenic acid. This study could provide some evidence for the application of n-3 PUFA in improving sarcopenia.

Efficient activation of peroxodisulfate by novel bionic iron-encapsulated biochar: The key roles of electron transfer pathway and reactive oxygen species evolution

In this study, a novel iron-encapsulated biochar (Fe@BC) was prepared using the biomass cultivated with an iron-containing solution. The iron in Fe@BC showed the phase change from Fe₃O₄ to α-Fe, and to CFe_15.1, with the increase of pyrolysis temperature (500-900 °C), and a graphene shell formed on the surface of Fe@BC. In addition, the signals assigned to the π-π* shake up, pyridinic N, graphitic N, and defects of Fe@BC were found to be stronger as the pyrolysis temperature increased. The F4@B9 sample, which was prepared at 900 °C, exhibited an excellent performance (98.01 %) to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol. Electron paramagnetic resonanceand chemical quenching experiments revealed that reactive oxygen radicals (ROS) including sulfate radical (•SO₄^-), hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide radical (•O₂^-), and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) existed in the F4@B9/PDS system. Furthermore, the micro-electrolysis process facilitated the generation of •O₂^- (12.35 %) and ¹O₂ (6.49 %) compared with the pure PDS system. Density functional theory revealed that, for the F4@B9-activated PDS process, the graphene shell of F4@B9 served as catalytic active sites as well. According to the correlation analysis, the iron specie of CFe_15.1 was more favorable for the generation of ROS than α-Fe. Also, π-π* shake up, pyridinic N, graphitic N, and defects participated in the PDS activation. This study provides a new method for the preparation of high-performance catalysts from naturally grown biomass with high iron contents.

PBS3: a versatile player in and beyond salicylic acid biosynthesis in Arabidopsis

AVRPPHB SUSCEPTIBLE 3 (PBS3) belongs to the GH3 family of acyl acid amido synthetases, which conjugates amino acids to diverse acyl acid substrates. Recent studies demonstrate that PBS3 in Arabidopsis plays a key role in the biosynthesis of plant defense hormone salicylic acid (SA) by catalyzing the conjugation of glutamate to isochorismate to form isochorismate-9-glutamate, which is then used to produce SA through spontaneous decay or ENHANCED PSEUDOMONAS SUSCEPTIBILITY (EPS1) catalysis. Consistent with its function as an essential enzyme for SA biosynthesis, PBS3 is well known to be a positive regulator of plant immunity in Arabidopsis. Additionally, PBS3 is also involved in the trade-off between abiotic and biotic stress responses in Arabidopsis by suppressing the inhibitory effect of abscisic acid on SA-mediated plant immunity. Besides stress responses, PBS3 also plays a role in plant development. Under long-day conditions, PBS3 influences Arabidopsis flowering time by regulating the expression of flowering regulators FLOWERING LOCUS C and FLOWERING LOCUS T. Taken together, PBS3 functions in the signaling network of plant development and responses to biotic and/or abiotic stresses, but the molecular mechanisms underlying its diverse roles remain obscure.

Potential impact of industrial transfer on PM2.5 and economic development under scenarios oriented by different objectives in Guangdong, China

For sustainable regional development, industrial transfer is an important trend that will potentially change the spatial and temporal pattern of air pollution and economic development. Aiming to better regulate industrial transfer and guide policy-making, this study proposes an assessment framework for industrial transfer that combines precise enterprise data, GIS technology and a 3-D air quality model. Taking Guangdong Province as an example, this study simulates the redistribution of 4015 high-pollution and high-energy-consumption (double-high) enterprises in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) to surrounding areas, and the potential impact on air quality is further evaluated. Three mutually independent transfer scenarios with different objectives are designed-ENV (ENVironment), ENT (ENTerprise), and GOV (GOVernment)-which aim to maximize benefits from the standpoint of the residents of Guangdong, the enterprises themselves, and local governments, respectively. Results show that Western Guangdong (WG), Northern Guangdong (NG), and Eastern Guangdong (EG) would be the primary transfer-in regions under the ENV, ENT, and GOV scenarios due to different resource endowment. Controlled by the different scenarios, the redistribution of enterprises presented different characteristics regarding the transport of pollutant emissions and economic added value between the PRD and surrounding areas. The average concentration of PM_2.5 and the related population-weighted concentrations (PWC) showed a slight decrease over the PRD (-0.75 to -0.62 μg/m³ and -0.35 to -0.49 μg/m³ per person) but increased dramatically in surrounding areas under the three scenarios (0.46-7.68 μg/m³ and 0.07-4.44 μg/m³ per person). The transfer of double-high enterprises could potentially decrease the industrial fossil fuel consumption intensity (fossil energy consumption per unit of industrial GDP) of most of the cities while exacerbating pollution intensity (concentration of PM_2.5 per unit of industrial GDP), reflecting the huge gap in the regional industrial development pattern in Guangdong Province at this stage, and illustrating the importance of emission control of these enterprises for improvement of regional air quality in the future. The research perspective on industrial transfer proposed in this study could provide a reference for future studies.

Expression pattern of peritoneum IL-6 is associated with baseline peritoneal transport function in uremic patients before dialysis

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate the biological factors associated with baseline peritoneal transport in uremic patients before dialysis.

METHODS

Thirty patients with uremia were grouped according to their peritoneal dialysate creatinine/serum creatinine ratio (D/P) as high-transport (H, 16 cases) with D/P>0.65 and low-transport (L, 14 cases) with D/P≤0.65 one month after continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis treatment. Multi-inflammatory levels such as serum IL-6 and albumin, peritoneal IL-6 level, and microvessel density (MVD) of visceral peritoneal were compared and correlated between the two groups to determine the associated factors.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in clinical parameters between the two groups (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in serum IL-6 and albumin between the two groups. However, peritoneal IL-6 and MVD in group H were significantly higher than group L (p=0.012, p=0.044), and they were positively correlated (r=0.368, p=0.045). Furthermore, baseline D/P was positively correlated with IL-6 expressions (r=0.640, p=0.000) and peritoneal MVD (r=0.476, p=0.008), and independently associated with peritoneal IL-6 expression (p=0.004).

CONCLUSIONS

The baseline peritoneal transport performance is associated with peritoneal IL-6 expression and MVD but not circulatory IL-6.
