Conformational Sampling over Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Reaction Pathways: Toward Revealing Atroposelectivity

The Py-Conformational-Sampling (PyCoSa) technique is introduced as a systematic computational means to sample the configurational space of transition-metal-catalyzed stereoselective reactions. When applied to atroposelective Suzuki-Miyaura coupling to create axially chiral biaryl products, the results show a range of mechanistic possibilities that include multiple low-energy channels through which C-C bonds can be formed.

Kohn-Sham Density in a Slater Orbital Basis Set

Finite, atom-centered Slater basis sets are used to determine approximate Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals. This is achieved by minimizing the kinetic energy plus the sum-squared difference between the Kohn-Sham density and the full configuration interaction density. As a result of the finite basis, a weight factor is introduced to balance the two minimization components. Results herein show that this can be done systematically, without sensitive dependence on the choice of scaling factor. In addition, the algorithm is applied to the LiH diatomic for fractional electron counts, where stretching the bond introduces significant reorganization of the electron density. The analysis will show the correct KS orbital structure and reveal the effects of correlation and electron locality on the KS solutions.

Substrate-Selective Catalysis Enabled Synthesis of Azaphilone Natural Products

Achieving substrate-selectivity is a central element of nature's approach to synthesis. By relying on the ability of a catalyst to discriminate between components in a mixture, control can be exerted over which molecules will move forward in a synthesis. This approach can be powerful when realized but can be challenging to duplicate in the laboratory. In this work, substrate-selective catalysis is leveraged to discriminate between two intermediates that exist in equilibrium, subsequently directing the final cyclization to arrive at either the linear or angular tricyclic core common to subsets of azaphilone natural products. By using a flavin-dependent monooxygenase (FDMO) in sequence with an acyl transferase (AT), the conversion of several orcinaldehyde substrates directly to the corresponding linear tricyclic azaphilones in a single reaction vessel was achieved. Further, mechanistic studies support that a substrate equilibrium together with enzyme substrate selectivity play an import role in the selectivity of the final cyclization step. Using this strategy, five azaphilone natural products were synthesized for the first time as well as a number of unnatural derivatives thereof.

Green Light Promoted Iridium(III)/Copper(I)-Catalyzed Addition of Alkynes to Aziridinoquinoxalines Through the Intermediacy of Azomethine Ylides

This manuscript describes the development of alkyne addition to the aziridine moiety of aziridinoquinoxalines using dual Ir(III)/Cu(I) catalytic system under green light-emitting diode (LED) photolysis (λmax =525 nm). This mild method features high levels of chemo- and regioselectivity and was used to generate 30 highly functionalized substituted dihydroquinoxalines in 36-98 % yield. This transformation was also carried asymmetrically using phthalazinamine-based chiral ligand to provide 9 chiral addition products in 96 : 4 to 86 : 14 e.r. The experimental and quantum chemical explorations of this reaction suggest a mechanism that involves Ir(III)-catalyzed triplet energy transfer followed by a ring-opening reaction ultimately leading to the formation of azomethine ylide intermediates. These azomethine intermediates undergo sequential protonation/copper(I) acetylide addition to provide the products.

Simulating Electron Transfer Reactions in Solution: Radical-Polar Crossover

Single-electron transfer (SET) promotes a wide variety of interesting chemical transformations, but modeling of SET requires a careful treatment of electronic and solvent effects to give meaningful insight. Therefore, a combined constrained density functional theory and molecular mechanics (CDFT/MM) tool is introduced specifically for SET-initiated reactions. Mechanisms for two radical-polar crossover reactions involving the organic electron donors tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) were studied with the new tool. An unexpected tertiary radical intermediate within the TDAE system was identified, relationships between kinetics and substitution in the TTF system were explained, and the impact of the solvent environments on the TDAE and TTF reactions were examined. The results highlight the need for including solvent dynamics when quantifying SET kinetics and thermodynamics, as a free energy difference of >20 kcal/mol was observed. Overall, the new method informs mechanistic analysis of SET-initiated reactions and therefore is envisioned to be useful for studying reactions in the condensed phase.

Exact and Model Exchange-Correlation Potentials for Open-Shell Systems

The conventional approaches to the inverse density functional theory problem typically assume nondegeneracy of the Kohn-Sham (KS) eigenvalues, greatly hindering their use in open-shell systems. We present a generalization of the inverse density functional theory problem that can seamlessly admit degenerate KS eigenvalues. Additionally, we allow for fractional occupancy of the Kohn-Sham orbitals to also handle noninteracting ensemble-v-representable densities, as opposed to just noninteracting pure-v-representable densities. We present the exact exchange-correlation (XC) potentials for six open-shell systems─four atoms (Li, C, N, and O) and two molecules (CN and CH2)─using accurate ground-state densities from configuration interaction calculations. We compare these exact XC potentials with model XC potentials obtained using nonlocal (B3LYP, SCAN0) and local/semilocal (SCAN, PBE, PW92) XC functionals. Although the relative errors in the densities obtained from these DFT functionals are of O (10-3 to 10-2), the relative errors in the model XC potentials remain substantially large─O (10-1 to 100).

Tetrafluorenofulvalene as a sterically frustrated open-shell alkene

Electronic and steric effects are known to greatly influence the structure, characteristics and reactivity of organic compounds. A typical π bond is weakened by oxidation (corresponding to the removal of electrons from bonding orbitals), by reduction (through addition of electrons to antibonding orbitals) and by unpairing of the bonding electrons, such as in the triplet state. Here we describe tetrafluorenofulvalene (TFF), a twisted, open-shell alkene for which these general rules do not hold. Through the synthesis, experimental characterization and computational analysis of its charged species spanning seven redox states, the central alkene bond in TFF is shown to become substantially stronger in the tri- and tetraanion, generated by chemical reduction. Furthermore, although its triplet state contains a weaker alkene bond than the singlet, in the quintet state its bond order increases substantially, yielding a flatter structure. This behaviour originates from the doubly bifurcated topology of the underlying spin system and can be rationalized by the balancing effects of benzenoid aromaticity and spin pairing.

A Perspective on Sustainable Computational Chemistry Software Development and Integration

The power of quantum chemistry to predict the ground and excited state properties of complex chemical systems has driven the development of computational quantum chemistry software, integrating advances in theory, applied mathematics, and computer science. The emergence of new computational paradigms associated with exascale technologies also poses significant challenges that require a flexible forward strategy to take full advantage of existing and forthcoming computational resources. In this context, the sustainability and interoperability of computational chemistry software development are among the most pressing issues. In this perspective, we discuss software infrastructure needs and investments with an eye to fully utilize exascale resources and provide unique computational tools for next-generation science problems and scientific discoveries.

Oxidative Cross Dehydrogenative Coupling of N-Heterocycles with Aldehydes through C(sp3)-H Functionalization

Existing methodologies for metal-catalyzed cross-couplings typically rely on preinstallation of reactive functional groups on both reaction partners. In contrast, C-H functionalization approaches offer promise in simplification of the requisite substrates; however, challenges from low reactivity and similar reactivity of various C-H bonds introduce considerable complexity. Herein, the oxidative cross dehydrogenative coupling of α-amino C(sp3)-H bonds and aldehydes to produce ketone derivatives is described using an unusual reaction medium that incorporates the simultaneous use of di-tert-butyl peroxide as an oxidant and zinc metal as a reductant. The method proceeds with a broad substrate scope, representing an attractive approach for accessing α-amino ketones through the formal acylation of C-H bonds α to nitrogen in N-heterocycles. A combination of experimental investigation and computational modeling provides evidence for a mechanistic pathway involving cross-selective nickel-mediated cross-coupling of α-amino radicals and acyl radicals.

Exchange correlation potentials from full configuration interaction in a Slater orbital basis

Ryabinkin-Kohut-Staroverov (RKS) theory builds a bridge between wave function theory and density functional theory by using quantities from the former to produce accurate exchange-correlation potentials needed by the latter. In this work, the RKS method is developed and tested alongside Slater atomic orbital basis functions for the first time. To evaluate this approach, full configuration interaction computations in the Slater orbital basis are employed to give quality input to RKS, allowing full correlation to be present along with correct nuclei cusps and asymptotic decay of the wavefunction. SlaterRKS is shown to be an efficient algorithm to arrive at exchange-correlation potentials without unphysical artifacts in moderately-sized basis sets. Furthermore, enforcement of the nuclear cusp conditions will be shown to be vital for the success of the Slater-basis RKS method. Examples of weakly and strongly correlated molecular systems will demonstrate the main features of SlaterRKS.

Controlling Catalyst Behavior in Lewis Acid-Catalyzed Carbonyl-Olefin Metathesis

Lewis acid-catalyzed carbonyl-olefin metathesis has introduced a new means for revealing the behavior of Lewis acids. In particular, this reaction has led to the observation of new solution behaviors for FeCl3 that may qualitatively change how we think of Lewis acid activation. For example, catalytic metathesis reactions operate in the presence of superstoichiometric amounts of carbonyl, resulting in the formation of highly ligated (octahedral) iron geometries. These structures display reduced activity, decreasing catalyst turnover. As a result, it is necessary to steer the Fe-center away from inhibiting pathways to improve the reaction efficiency and augment yields for recalcitrant substrates. Herein, we examine the impact of the addition of TMSCl to FeCl3-catalyzed carbonyl-olefin metathesis, specifically for substrates that are prone to byproduct inhibition. Through kinetic, spectroscopic, and colligative experiments, significant deviations from the baseline metathesis reactivity are observed, including mitigation of byproduct inhibition as well as an increase in the reaction rate. Quantum chemical simulations are used to explain how TMSCl induces a change in catalyst structure that leads to these kinetic differences. Collectively, these data are consistent with the formation of a silylium catalyst, which induces the reaction through carbonyl binding. The FeCl3 activation of Si-Cl bonds to give the silylium active species is expected to have significant utility in enacting carbonyl-based transformations.

Machine Learning Strategies for Reaction Development: Toward the Low-Data Limit

Machine learning models are increasingly being utilized to predict outcomes of organic chemical reactions. A large amount of reaction data is used to train these models, which is in stark contrast to how expert chemists discover and develop new reactions by leveraging information from a small number of relevant transformations. Transfer learning and active learning are two strategies that can operate in low-data situations, which may help fill this gap and promote the use of machine learning for tackling real-world challenges in organic synthesis. This Perspective introduces active and transfer learning and connects these to potential opportunities and directions for further research, especially in the area of prospective development of chemical transformations.

Formal Cross-Coupling of Amines and Carboxylic Acids to Form sp3-sp2 Carbon-Carbon Bonds

Amines and carboxylic acids are abundant synthetic building blocks that are classically united to form an amide bond. To access new pockets of chemical space, we are interested in the development of amine-acid coupling reactions that complement the amide coupling. In particular, the formation of carbon-carbon bonds by formal deamination and decarboxylation would be an impactful addition to the synthesis toolbox. Here, we report a formal cross-coupling of alkyl amines and aryl carboxylic acids to form C(sp³)-C(sp²) bonds following preactivation of the amine-acid building blocks as a pyridinium salt and N-acyl-glutarimide, respectively. Under nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling conditions, a diversity of simple and complex substrates are united in good to excellent yield, and numerous pharmaceuticals are successfully diversified. High-throughput experimentation was leveraged in the development of the reaction and the discovery of performance-enhancing additives such as phthalimide, RuCl₃, and GaCl₃. Mechanistic investigations suggest phthalimide may play a role in stabilizing productive Ni complexes rather than being involved in oxidative addition of the N-acyl-imide and that RuCl₃ supports the decarbonylation event, thereby improving reaction selectivity.

Advances in Parallel Heat Bath Configuration Interaction

Heat-bath configuration interaction (HCI) is a deterministic method that approaches the full CI limit at greatly reduced computational cost. In this work, computational improvements to the HCI algorithm are introduced targeting speed, parallel efficiency, and memory requirements. The new implementation introduces a hash function to distribute determinants and takes advantage of MPI and OpenMP for parallelism allowing for a (22e,168o) active space to be studied, which explicitly includes 2.39 × 10⁷ variational determinants and 8.95 × 10¹⁰ perturbative determinants. Benchmarks show up to 86% parallel efficiency of the perturbative step on 32 nodes (4096 cores) and a total efficiency of 74%. The new HCI implementation is benchmarked for accuracy against prior results and applied to study the triplet-quintet gap in the challenging [FeO(NH₃)₅]²⁺ complex.

Rethinking Catalyst Trapping in Ni-Catalyzed Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene Polymerization

Catalyst-transfer polymerization (CTP) is a chain-growth method used to synthesize conjugated polymers. Although CTP works well for most donor-type monomers, the polymerization stalls with thieno[3,2-b]thiophene when using Ni catalysts. Previous reports have rationalized this result by suggesting that the catalyst is trapped in a Ni0 π-complex with the highly electron-rich arene. In this study, evidence is provided that the catalyst trap is more likely a NiII complex that arises from oxidative insertion of Ni0 into the C-S bonds of thieno[3,2-b]thiophene. This result is consistent with the known reactivity of Ni0 complexes toward S-heteroarenes and is supported herein by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra acquired in situ, as well as data collected from small-molecule model reactions and density-functional theory simulations of the polymerization. We propose that this C-S insertion pathway and related off-cycle reactions may be relevant to understanding or enabling the CTP of other monomers with fused thiophenes.

Conformer-RL: A deep reinforcement learning library for conformer generation

Conformer‐RL is an open‐source Python package for applying deep reinforcement learning (RL) to the task of generating a diverse set of low‐energy conformations for a single molecule. The library features a simple interface to train a deep RL conformer generation model on any covalently bonded molecule or polymer, including most drug‐like molecules. Under the hood, it implements state‐of‐the‐art RL algorithms and graph neural network architectures tuned specifically for molecular structures. Conformer‐RL is also a platform for researching new algorithms and neural network architectures for conformer generation, as the library contains modular class interfaces for RL environments and agents, allowing users to easily swap components with their own implementations. Additionally, it comes with tools to visualize and save generated conformers for further analysis. Conformer‐RL is well‐tested and thoroughly documented with tutorials for each of the functionalities mentioned above, and is available on PyPi and Github: https://github.com/ZimmermanGroup/conformer-rl.

The numerical evaluation of Slater integrals on graphics processing units

This article presents SlaterGPU, a graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerated library that uses OpenACC to numerically compute Slater-type orbital (STO) integrals. The electron repulsion integrals (ERI) are computed under the RI approximation using the Coulomb potential of the Slater basis function. To fully realize the performance capabilities of modern GPUs, the Slater integrals are evaluated in mixed-precision, resulting in speedups for the ERIs of over 80×. Parallelization on multiple GPUs allows for integral throughput of over 3 million integrals per second. This places STO integral throughput within reach of single-threaded, conventional Gaussian integration schemes. To test the quality of the integrals, the fluorine exchange reaction barrier in fluoromethane was computed using heat-bath configuration interaction (HBCI). In addition, the singlet-triplet gap of cyclobutadiene was examined using HBCI in a triple- ζ $$ \zeta $$ , polarized basis set. These benchmarks demonstrate the library's ability to generate the full set of integrals necessary for configuration interaction with up to 6 h $$ 6h $$ functions in the auxiliary basis.

Predicting reaction conditions from limited data through active transfer learning

Transfer and active learning have the potential to accelerate the development of new chemical reactions, using prior data and new experiments to inform models that adapt to the target area of interest. This article shows how specifically tuned machine learning models, based on random forest classifiers, can expand the applicability of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions to types of nucleophiles unknown to the model. First, model transfer is shown to be effective when reaction mechanisms and substrates are closely related, even when models are trained on relatively small numbers of data points. Then, a model simplification scheme is tested and found to provide comparative predictivity on reactions of new nucleophiles that include unseen reagent combinations. Lastly, for a challenging target where model transfer only provides a modest benefit over random selection, an active transfer learning strategy is introduced to improve model predictions. Simple models, composed of a small number of decision trees with limited depths, are crucial for securing generalizability, interpretability, and performance of active transfer learning.

State-specific solvation for restricted active space spin-flip (RAS-SF) wave functions based on the polarizable continuum formalism

The restricted active space spin-flip (RAS-SF) formalism is a particular form of single-reference configuration interaction that can describe some forms of strong correlation at a relatively low cost and which has recently been formulated for the description of charge-transfer excited states. Here, we introduce both equilibrium and nonequilibrium versions of a state-specific solvation correction for vertical transition energies computed using RAS-SF wave functions, based on the framework of a polarizable continuum model (PCM). Ground-state polarization is described using the solvent's static dielectric constant and in the nonequilibrium solvation approach that polarization is modified upon vertical excitation using the solvent's optical dielectric constant. Benchmark calculations are reported for well-studied models of photo-induced charge transfer, including naphthalene dimer, C₂H₄⋯C₂F₄, pentacene dimer, and perylene diimide (PDI) dimer, several of which are important in organic photovoltaic applications. For the PDI dimer, we demonstrate that the charge-transfer character of the excited states is enhanced in the presence of a low-dielectric medium (static dielectric constant ɛ₀ = 3) as compared to a gas-phase calculation (ɛ₀ = 1). This stabilizes mechanistic traps for singlet fission and helps to explain experimental singlet fission rates. We also examine the effects of nonequilibrium solvation on charge-separated states in an intramolecular singlet fission chromophore, where we demonstrate that the energetic ordering of the states changes as a function of solvent polarity. The RAS-SF + PCM methodology that is reported here provides a framework to study charge-separated states in solution and in photovoltaic materials.

Glycosyl Exchange of Unactivated Glycosidic Bonds: Suppressing or Embracing Side Reactivity in Catalytic Glycosylations

While developing boron-catalyzed glycosylations using glycosyl fluoride donors and trialkylsilyl ether acceptors, competing pathways involving productive glycosylation or glycosyl exchange were observed. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies suggest a novel mode of reactivity where a dioxolenium ion is a key intermediate that promotes both pathways through addition to either a silyl ether or to the acetal of an existing glycosidic linkage. Modifications in catalyst structure enable either pathway to be favored, and with this understanding, improved multicomponent iterative couplings and glycosyl exchange processes were demonstrated.

Changes in ligand coordination mode induce bimetallic C-C coupling pathways

Carbon-carbon coupling is one of the most powerful tools in the organic synthesis arsenal. Known methodologies primarily exploit monometallic Pd⁰/Pd^II catalytic mechanisms to give new C-C bonds. Bimetallic C-C coupling mechanisms that involve a Pd^I/Pd^II redox cycle, remain underexplored. Thus, a detailed mechnaistic understanding is imperative for the development of new bimetallic catalysts. Previously, a Pd^II-Me dimer (1) supported by L1, which has phosphine and 1-azaallyl donor groups, underwent reductive elimination to give ethane, a Pd^I dimer, a Pd^II monometallic complex, and Pd black. Herein, a comprehensive experimental and computational study of the reactivity of 1 is presented, which reveals that the versatile coordination chemistry of L1 promotes bimetallic C-C bond formation. The phosphine 1-azaallyl ligand adopts various bridging modes to maintain the bimetallic structure throughout the C-C bond forming mechanism, which involves intramolecular methyl transfer and 1,1-reductive elimination from one of the palladium atoms. The minor byproduct, methane, likely forms through a monometallic intermediate that is sensitive to solvent C-H activation. Overall, the capacity of L1 to adopt different coordination modes promotes the bimetallic C-C coupling channel through pathways that are unattainable with statically-coordinated ligands.

Interplay Between Applied Force and Radical Attack in the Mechanochemical Chain Scission of Poly(acrylic acid)

Sonication and radical attack are both known to contribute to breaking down polymers. Quantum chemical models show how the two can operate together, where radical attack is shown to reduce the effective tensile strength of the material. Using poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a model, hydrogen atom abstraction in PAA was found to improve the thermodynamics and kinetics of bond scission. The force needed for bond rupture was estimated to decrease from 4.7 to 2.5 nN. This occurs because hydrogen atom abstraction drastically alters the potential energy surface of the scissile bond. Bond activation was also found to decrease the magnitude of the changes in bond scission geometries and energetics in response to the applied force. While radical abstraction is overall beneficial for mechanical bond scission, the polymer also becomes less responsive to force than the unactivated polymer. This finding places upper limits on the efficacy of the synergy between radical attack and applied force. In addition, the importance of reaction pathway optimization is also shown, where comparisons to the COGEF method show the latter to be qualitatively incapable of describing chain scission after radical activation.

Heavy atom oriented orbital angular momentum manipulation in metal-free organic phosphors

Metal-free purely organic phosphors (POPs) are emerging materials for display technologies, solid-state lighting, and chemical sensors. However, due to limitations in contemporary design strategies, the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) efficiency of POPs remains low and their emission lifetime is pinned in the millisecond regime. Here, we present a design concept for POPs where the two main factors that control SOC-the heavy atom effect and orbital angular momentum-are tightly coupled to maximize SOC. This strategy is bolstered by novel natural-transition-orbital-based computational methods to visualize and quantify angular momentum descriptors for molecular design. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy, prototype POPs were created having efficient room-temperature phosphorescence with lifetimes pushed below the millisecond regime, which were enabled by boosted SOC efficiencies beyond 102 cm-1 and achieved record-high efficiencies in POPs. Electronic structure analysis shows how discrete tuning of heavy atom effects and orbital angular momentum is possible within the proposed design strategy, leading to a strong degree of control over the resulting POP properties.

A Comparison of Exact and Model Exchange-Correlation Potentials for Molecules

Accurate exchange-correlation (XC) potentials for three-dimensional systems─via solution of the inverse density functional theory (DFT) problem─are now available to test the quality of DFT approximations. Herein, the exact XC potential for seven molecules─dihydrogen at four different bond-lengths, lithium hydride, water, and ortho-benzyne─are computed from full configuration interaction reference densities. These are compared to model XC potentials from nonlocal (B3LYP, HSE06, SCAN0, and M08-HX) and semilocal/local (SCAN, PBE, and PW92) XC functionals. Whereas for most systems, relative errors in the ground-state densities are O(10-3-10-2), the model XC potentials have much higher errors of O(10-1-100). Among the model XC functionals, SCAN0 offers the best agreement with the exact XC potential, underlining the significance of satisfying exact conditions as well as including nonlocal effects in XC functionals. This work indicates that tests against the exact XC potential will provide a promising new direction for building more accurate XC functionals for DFT.

Studies of Catalyst-Controlled Regioselective Acetalization and Its Application to Single-Pot Synthesis of Differentially Protected Saccharides

This article describes studies on the regioselective acetal protection of monosaccharide-based diols using chiral phosphoric acids (CPAs) and their immobilized polymeric variants, (R)-Ad-TRIP-PS and (S)-SPINOL-PS, as the catalysts. These catalyst-controlled regioselective acetalizations were found to proceed with high regioselectivities (up to >25:1 rr) on various d-glucose-, d-galactose-, d-mannose-, and l-fucose-derived 1,2-diols and could be carried out in a regiodivergent fashion depending on the choice of chiral catalyst. The polymeric catalysts were conveniently recycled and reused multiple times for gram-scale functionalizations with catalytic loadings as low as 0.1 mol %, and their performance was often found to be superior to the performance of their monomeric variants. These regioselective CPA-catalyzed acetalizations were successfully combined with common hydroxyl group functionalizations as single-pot telescoped procedures to produce 32 regioisomerically pure differentially protected mono- and disaccharide derivatives. To further demonstrate the utility of the polymeric catalysts, the same batch of (R)-Ad-TRIP-PS catalyst was recycled and reused to accomplish single-pot gram-scale syntheses of 6 differentially protected d-glucose derivatives. The subsequent exploration of the reaction mechanism using NMR studies of deuterated and nondeuterated substrates revealed that low-temperature acetalizations happen via a syn-addition mechanism and that the reaction regioselectivity exhibits strong dependence on the temperature. The computational studies indicate a complex temperature-dependent interplay of two reaction mechanisms, one involving an anomeric phosphate intermediate and another via concerted asynchronous formation of an acetal, that results in syn-addition products. The computational models also explain the steric factors responsible for the observed C2 selectivities and are consistent with experimentally observed selectivity trends.

Using JPP to Identify Ni Bidentate Phosphine Complexes In Situ

Identifying intermediates of Ni-containing reactions can be challenging due to the high reactivity of Ni complexes and their sensitivity toward air and moisture. Many Ni bidentate phosphine complexes are diamagnetic and can be analyzed in situ via ³¹P NMR spectroscopy, but the oxidation state of Ni is difficult to determine using ³¹P chemical shift analysis alone. The J-coupling between P atoms, J_PP, has been proposed to correlate with oxidation state, but few investigations have looked at how J_PP is affected by parameters such as length of the linker or identity of the phosphine or other ligands. The present investigation into the J_PP values of Ni bidentate phosphine complexes with two-carbon and three-carbon linkers shows that the J_PP values observed in ³¹P NMR spectra, |J_PP|, are competent indicators of the oxidation state at Ni. For complexes with two-carbon linkers, |J_PP| > 40 Hz is typical of Ni⁰ while |J_PP| < 30 Hz is typical of Ni^II; this trend is reversed for complexes with three-carbon linkers. Additionally, the Lewis acidity of the Ni and Lewis basicity of the phosphine ligand affect J_PP predictably. For example, increased P-to-Ni donation arising from more-donating phosphines or more-withdrawing ligands trans to the P atoms causes a more negative J_PP. These results should enable the oxidation state of Ni and properties of ligands in Ni bidentate phosphine complexes to be determined in situ during reactions containing these species.

Software for the frontiers of quantum chemistry: An overview of developments in the Q-Chem 5 package

This article summarizes technical advances contained in the fifth major release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry program package, covering developments since 2015. A comprehensive library of exchange-correlation functionals, along with a suite of correlated many-body methods, continues to be a hallmark of the Q-Chem software. The many-body methods include novel variants of both coupled-cluster and configuration-interaction approaches along with methods based on the algebraic diagrammatic construction and variational reduced density-matrix methods. Methods highlighted in Q-Chem 5 include a suite of tools for modeling core-level spectroscopy, methods for describing metastable resonances, methods for computing vibronic spectra, the nuclear-electronic orbital method, and several different energy decomposition analysis techniques. High-performance capabilities including multithreaded parallelism and support for calculations on graphics processing units are described. Q-Chem boasts a community of well over 100 active academic developers, and the continuing evolution of the software is supported by an "open teamware" model and an increasingly modular design.

An Open-Shell Coronoid with Hybrid Chichibabin-Schlenk Conjugation

A hexaradicaloid molecule with alternating Kekulé and non-Kekulé connectivities between adjacent spin centers was obtained by fusing two classic conjugation motifs, found respectively in the Chichibabin and Schlenk hydrocarbons, into a coronoid structure. 1 H NMR, ESR and SQUID experiments, combined with computational analyses reveal that the system has a singlet ground state, characterized by a significant hexaradicaloid character ( γ 0 = 0.826, γ 1 = γ 2 = 0.773). It possesses multiple thermally accessible high-spin states (up to the septet), with uniform energy gaps of ca 1.0 kcal/mol between consecutive multiplicities. In line with its open-shell character, the coronoid has a small electronic bandgap of ca. 0.8 eV and undergoes two consecutive one-electron oxidations at low potentials, yielding cationic forms with extended near-infrared absorption. The hexaradicaloid, which combines open-shell and macrocyclic contributions to its π conjugation, provides an example of a design strategy for multistate spin switches and redox-amphoteric NIR dyes.

Giving superabsorbent polymers a second life as pressure-sensitive adhesives

An estimated 6.3 billion metric tons of post-consumer polymer waste has been produced, with the majority (79%) in landfills or the environment. Recycling methods that utilize these waste polymers could attenuate their environmental impact. For many polymers, recycling via mechanical processes is not feasible and these materials are destined for landfills or incineration. One salient example is the superabsorbent material used in diapers and feminine hygiene products, which contain crosslinked sodium polyacrylates. Here we report an open-loop recycling method for these materials that involves (i) decrosslinking via hydrolysis, (ii) an optional chain-shortening via sonication, and (iii) functionalizing via Fischer esterification. The resulting materials exhibit low-to-medium storage and loss moduli, and as such, are applicable as general-purpose adhesives. A life cycle assessment demonstrates that the adhesives synthesized via this approach outcompete the same materials derived from petroleum feedstocks on nearly every metric, including carbon dioxide emissions and cumulative energy demand.

An Ion-Pairing Approach to Stereoselective Metal-Free Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Stereochemistry can have a profound impact on polymer and materials properties. Unfortunately, straightforward methods for realizing high levels of stereocontrolled polymerizations are often challenging to achieve. In a departure from traditional metal-mediated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), we discovered a remarkably simple method for controlling alkene stereochemistry in photoredox mediated metal-free ROMP. Ion-pairing, initiator sterics, and solvation effects each had profound impact on the stereochemistry of polynorbornene (PNB). Simple modifications to the reaction conditions produced PNB with trans alkene content of 25 to >98 %. High cis content was obtained from relatively larger counterions, toluene as solvent, low temperatures (-78 °C), and initiators with low Charton values. Conversely, smaller counterions, dichloromethane as solvent, and enol ethers with higher Charton values enabled production of PNB with high trans content. Data from a combined experimental and computational investigation are consistent with the stereocontrolling step of the radical cationic mechanism proceeding under thermodynamic control.

Mechanochemical Release of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes from Flex-Activated Mechanophores

We have discovered a new flex-activated mechanophore that releases an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) under mechanical load. The mechanophore design is based upon NHC-carbodiimide (NHC-CDI) adducts and demonstrates an important first step toward flex-activated designs capable of further downstream reactivities. Since the flex-activation is non-destructive to the main polymer chains, the material can be subjected to multiple compression cycles to achieve iterative increases in the activation percentage of mechanophores. Two different NHC structures were demonstrated, signifying the potential modularity of the mechanophore design.

The Role of the Core Attachment Positioning in Triggering Intramolecular Singlet Exciton Fission in Perylene Diimide Tetramers

Previous studies have proposed that the presence of a flexible π-bridge linker is crucial in activating intramolecular singlet exciton fission (iSEF) in multichromophoric systems. In this study, we report the photophysical properties of three analogous perylene diimide (PDI) dendritic tetramers showing flexible/twisted π-bridged structures with α- and β-substitutions and a rigid/planar structure with a β-fused ring (βC) connection to a benzodithiophene-thiophene (BDT-Th) core. The rigidity and enhanced planarity of βC lead to significant intramolecular charge transfer and triplet formation via an intersystem crossing pathway. Steady-state spectroscopic measurements reveal similar absorption and emission spectra for the α-tetramer and the parent PDI monomer. However, their fluorescence quantum yield is significantly different. The negligible fluorescence yield of the α-tetramer (0.04%) is associated with a competitive nonradiative decay pathway. Indeed, for this twisted compound in a high polar environment, a fast and efficient iSEF with a triplet quantum yield of 124% is observed. Our results show that the α-single-bond connections in the α compound are capable of interrupting the coupling among the PDI units, favoring iSEF. We propose that the formation of the double triplet (¹[TT]) state is through a superposition of singlet states known as [S₁S₀]_[TT]CT, which has been suggested previously for pentacene derivatives. Using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic experiments, we demonstrate that the conformational flexibility of the linker itself is necessary but not sufficient to allow iSEF. For the case of the other twisted tetramer, β, the strong π-π co-facial interactions between the adjacent PDI units in its structure lead to excimer formation. These excimer states trap the singlet excitons preventing the formation of the ¹[TT] state, thus inhibiting iSEF.

Experimental and Theoretical Characterization of Ultrafast Water-Soluble Photochromic Photoacids

UV-visible transient absorption spectroscopy and quantum mechanical simulations are combined to elucidate the photochemical mechanism of two metastable merocyanine/spiropyran photoacids, 2-[(E)-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]-3,3-dimethyl-1-(3-sulfopropyl)-3H-indol-1-ium (phenylhydroxy-MCH) and 2-[(E)-2-(1H-indazol-7-yl)ethenyl]-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-1,3-benzothiazol-3-ium (indazole-MCH). Transient absorption spectra demonstrate that trans-acid isomerization to the cis form results in deprotonation on a picosecond time scale. Ring closure to form spiropyran follows promptly from the appropriate conformation or follows at longer time delays (≫3.5 ns) following a barrier crossing for single-bond isomerization to the appropriate conformation. Consistent with the results of Berton et al. [ Chem. Sci. 2020, 11, 8457-8468] , we find that cis-phenylhydroxy-MCH is a stronger acid than trans-phenylhydroxy-MCH. The decrease in pK_a upon isomerization is further investigated to benchmark quantum chemical methods for their accuracy. Calculations were performed with nine levels of theory including continuum solvent models and explicit water. The calculations are not sufficient to describe the ΔpK_a following isomerization of these photoacids, and more work is necessary to properly evaluate the physical basis for the acidity of the cis photoacids.

Combined Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Lewis Acid-Carbonyl Interactions for Metathesis

The coordination of a carbonyl to a Lewis acid represents the first step in a wide range of catalytic transformations. In many reactions it is necessary for the Lewis acid to discriminate between starting material and product, and as a result, how these structures behave in solution must be characterized. Herein, we report the application of computational modeling to calculate properties of the solution interactions of acetone and benzaldehyde with FeCl₃. Using these chemical models, we can predict spectral features in the carbonyl region of infrared (IR) spectroscopy. These simulated spectra are then directly compared to experimental spectra generated via titration-IR. We observe good agreement between theory and experiment, in that, between 0 and 1 equiv carbonyl with respect to FeCl₃, a pairwise interaction dominates the spectra. When >1 equiv carbonyl is present, our theoretical model predicts two possible structures composed of 4:1 carbonyl to FeCl₃, for acetone as well as benzaldehyde. When these predicted spectra are compared with titration-IR data, both structures contribute to the observed solution interactions. These findings suggest that the resting state of FeCl₃-catalyzed carbonyl-based reactions employing simple substrates starts as a Lewis pair, but this structure is gradually consumed and becomes a highly ligated, catalytically less active Fe-centered complex as the reaction proceeds. An analytical model is proposed to quantify catalyst inhibition due to equilibrium between 1:1 and 4:1 carbonyl:Fe complexes.

Brønsted-Acid-Catalyzed Intramolecular Carbonyl-Olefin Reactions: Interrupted Metathesis vs Carbonyl-Ene Reaction

Lewis acid catalysts have been shown to promote carbonyl-olefin metathesis through a critical four-membered-ring oxetane intermediate. Recently, Brønsted-acid catalysis of related substrates was similarly proposed to result in a transient oxetane, which fragments within a single elementary step via a postulated oxygen-atom transfer mechanism. Herein, careful quantum chemical investigations show that Brønsted acid (triflic acid, TfOH) instead invokes a mechanistic switch to a carbonyl-ene reaction, and oxygen-atom transfer is uncompetitive. TfOH's conjugate base is also found to rearrange H atoms and allow isomerization of the carbocations that appear after the carbonyl-ene reaction. The mechanism explains available experimental information, including the skipped diene species that appear transiently before product formation. The present study clarifies the mechanism for activation of intramolecular carbonyl-olefin substrates by Brønsted acids and provides important insights that will help develop this exciting class of catalysts.

The Mechanics of the Bicycle Pedal Photoisomerization in Crystalline cis,cis-1,4-Diphenyl-1,3-butadiene

Direct irradiation of crystalline cis,cis-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene (cc-DPB) forms trans,trans-1,4-diphenyl-1,3,-butadiene via a concerted two-bond isomerization called the bicycle pedal (BP) mechanism. However, little is known about photoisomerization pathways in the solid state and there has been much debate surrounding the interpretation of volume-conserving isomerization mechanisms. The bicycle pedal photoisomerization is investigated using the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics complete active space self-consistent field/Amber force-field method. Important details about how the steric environment influences isomerization mechanisms are revealed including how the one-bond flip and hula-twist mechanisms are suppressed by the crystal cavity, the nature of the seam space in steric environments, and the features of the bicycle pedal mechanism. Specifically, in the bicycle pedal, the phenyl rings of cc-DPB are locked in place and the intermolecular packing allows a passageway for rotation of the central diene in a volume-conserving manner. In contrast, the bicycle pedal rotation in the gas phase is not a stable pathway, so single-bond rotation mechanisms become operative instead. Furthermore, the crystal BP mechanism is an activated process that occurs completely on the excited state; the photoproduct can decay to the ground state through radiative and non-radiative pathways. The present models, however, do not capture the quantitative activation barriers, and more work is needed to better model reactions in crystals. Last, the reaction barriers of the different crystalline conformations within the unit cell of cc-DPB are compared to investigate the possibility for conformation-dependent isomerization. Although some difference in reaction barriers is observed, the difference is most likely not responsible for the experimentally observed periods of fast and slow conversion.

Activating intramolecular singlet exciton fission by altering π-bridge flexibility in perylene diimide trimers for organic solar cells

In this study, two analogous perylene diimide (PDI) trimers, whose structures show rotatable single bond π-bridge connection (twisted) vs. rigid/fused π-bridge connection (planar), were synthesized and investigated. We show via time resolved spectroscopic measurements how the π-bridge connections in A-π-D-π-A-π-D-π-A multichromophoric PDI systems strongly affect the triplet yield and triplet formation rate. In the planar compound, with stronger intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character, triplet formation occurs via conventional intersystem crossing. However, clear evidence of efficient and fast intramolecular singlet exciton fission (iSEF) is observed in the twisted trimer compound with weaker ICT character. Multiexciton triplet generation and separation occur in the twisted (flexible-bridged) PDI trimer, where weak coupling among the units is observed as a result of the degenerate double triplet and quintet states, obtained by quantum chemical calculations. The high triplet yield and fast iSEF observed in the twisted compound are due not only to enthalpic viability but also to the significant entropic gain allowed by its trimeric structure. Our results represent a significant step forward in structure-property understanding, and may direct the design of new efficient iSEF materials.

Mechanistic Study of Isotactic Poly(propylene oxide) Synthesis using a Tethered Bimetallic Chromium Salen Catalyst

Initial catalyst dormancy has been mitigated for the enantioselective polymerization of propylene oxide using a tethered bimetallic chromium(III) salen complex. A detailed mechanistic study provided insight into the species responsible for this induction period and guided efforts to remove them. High-resolution electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry and density functional theory computations revealed that a μ-hydroxide and a bridged 1,2-hydroxypropanolate complex are present during the induction period. Kinetic studies and additional computation indicated that the μ-hydroxide complex is a short-lived catalyst arrest state, where hydroxide dissociation from one metal allows for epoxide enchainment to form the 1,2-hydroxypropanolate arrest state. While investigating anion dependence on the induction period, it became apparent that catalyst activation was the main contributor for dormancy. Using a 1,2-diol or water as chain transfer agents (CTAs) led to longer induction periods as a result of increased 1,2-hydroxyalkanolate complex formation. With a minor catalyst modification, rigorous drying conditions, and avoiding 1,2-diols as CTAs, the induction period was essentially removed.

Mercury Magnetic Isotope Effect: A Plausible Photochemical Mechanism

Large mass-independent fractionation signatures in Hg have been observed in the laboratory and the environment, prompting deep questions about the chemical reasons behind these signatures. Since the relative lack of mechanistic information about Hg chemistry in the environment has precluded explanations of these isotope effects, the present study uses high-level electronic structure methods to evaluate the possible photochemical mechanisms of mass-independent isotope effects (MIEs) in HgX₂ and CH₃HgX (X = Cl, Br, I, and SCH₃). The results show that spin-orbit coupling wipes out the potential of MIEs for Hg bound to Br or I, but that complexes involving lighter elements, HgX₂ and CH₃HgX (X = Cl and SCH₃), have relatively small spin-orbit couplings upon photolysis. This unexpected finding shows that magnetic isotope fractionation due to hyperfine coupling is possible, depending on the identity of the Hg complex. By examination of the photolysis potential energy profiles, this study shows that HgX₂ complexes can have a positive or a negative MIE (depending on reaction conditions), while CH₃HgX complexes exclusively result in a positive MIE. These findings agree with MIE recorded in natural samples, demonstrating a plausible mechanism for the surprising mass-independent fractionation of Hg in the environment.

Experimental and Computational Studies on Regiodivergent Chiral Phosphoric Acid Catalyzed Cycloisomerization of Mupirocin Methyl Ester

This article presents a new strategy for achieving regiocontrol over the endo versus exo modes of cycloisomerizations of epoxide-containing alcohols, which leads to the formation of five- or six-membered cyclic ethers. Unlike traditional methods relying on achiral reagents or enzymes, this approach utilizes chiral phosphoric acids to catalyze the regiodivergent selective formations of either tetrahydrofuran- or tetrahydropyran-containing products. By using methyl ester of epoxide-containing antibiotic mupirocin as the substrate, it is demonstrated that catalytic chiral phosphoric acids (R)-TCYP and (S)-TIPSY could be used to achieve the selective formation of either the six-membered endo product (95:5 r.r.) or the five-membered exo product (77:23 r.r.), correspondingly. This cyclization was found to be unselective under the standard conditions involving various achiral acids, bases, or buffers. The subsequent mechanistic studies using state-of-the-art quantum chemical solutions provided the description of the potential energy surface, which is fully consistent with the experimental observations. Based on these results, highly detailed reaction paths are obtained and a concerted and highly synchronous mechanism is proposed for the formation of both exo and endo products.
