Phosphate phosphors with anti-thermal quenching properties for urban ecological lighting

White light-emitting diode (LED) for night lighting disrupts photoperiod in plants, which affects the plant's photosynthesis. Therefore, it is necessary to find a new type of white LED with little effect on plant photosynthesis. In this study, a series of phosphate phosphors Ca9NaY2/3(PO4)7:Dy3+ (CNYP:Dy3+) were synthesized. Cation Li+ substitute Na+ were used to improve the luminescence properties of CNYP:Dy3+ phosphor. The CNYP:Dy3+ phosphor exhibits visible white light emission with emission peaks at 480 nm (blue light) and 570 nm (yellow light) excited by the near ultraviolet light 350 nm. The optimal concentration of Dy3+ was 0.10 mol, and the mechanism of concentration quenching was evaluated as energy migration among the nearest or next-nearest Dy3+. The substitution of Na+ by Li+ of CNYP:0.10Dy3+ improves the internal quantum efficiency from 30.24 % to 59.05 %, and presents good near-zero thermal quenching performance at 423 K. To assess the suitability of this phosphor for urban ecological lighting, the spectrum resemblance (SR) index between the electroluminescence spectrum of the prepared pc-LED and the absorption spectra of chlorophyll a and b was evaluated as 6.63 % and 18.61 %, respectively. This work exhibits a feasible scheme for the development of urban ecological lighting.

KMT2 Family of H3K4 Methyltransferases: Enzymatic Activity-dependent and -independent Functions

Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2 (KMT2) methyltransferases are critical for gene regulation, cell differentiation, animal development, and human diseases. KMT2 biological roles are often attributed to their methyltransferase activities on lysine 4 of histone H3 (H3K4). However, recent data indicate that KMT2 proteins also possess non-enzymatic functions. In this review, we discuss the current understanding of KMT2 family, with a focus on their enzymatic activity-dependent and -independent functions. Six mammalian KMT2 proteins of three subgroups, KMT2A/B (MLL1/2), KMT2C/D (MLL3/4), and KMT2F/G (SETD1A/B or SET1A/B), have shared and distinct protein domains, catalytic substrates, genomic localizations, and associated complex subunits. Recent studies have revealed the importance of KMT2C/D in enhancer regulation, differentiation, development, tumor suppression and highlighted KMT2C/D enzymatic activity-dependent and -independent roles in mouse embryonic development and cell differentiation. Catalytic dependent and independent functions for KMT2A/B and KMT2F/G in gene regulation, differentiation, and development are less understood. Finally, we provide our perspectives and lay out future research directions that may help advance the investigation on enzymatic activity-dependent and -independent biological roles and working mechanisms of KMT2 methyltransferases.

Leaching Li from mixed cathode materials of spent lithium-ion batteries via carbon thermal reduction

The use of a carbon thermal reduction roasting method to recover lithium resources from spent lithium-ion batteries (S-LIBs) provides an important opportunity for recycling S-LIBs. The preferential extraction of Li via reduction roasting has been widely studied; however, the extraction of Li from mixed cathode materials has been rarely reported. Herein, we propose a method based on carbon thermal reduction to preferentially extract Li from mixed cathode materials. It was confirmed that there are differences in carbon thermal reduction products at 700 °C-850 °C by the thermodynamic analysis of the carbon thermal reduction process. At the same time, the effects of factors such as roasting temperature, roasting time, and material ratio on Li leaching efficiency were investigated. The Li recovery rate reached 98.86% under the optimal conditions of holding at 750 °C for 4 h with a molar ratio of mixed cathode materials to graphite of 1 : 0.25. Recovered Li2CO3 can be directly used as a lithium source for the regeneration of cathode materials. This study will provide new opportunities for the efficient recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (S-LIB) mixtures.

Heterogeneous-Structured Molybdenum Diboride as a Novel and Promising Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

With the development of electric vehicles, exploiting anode materials with high capacity and fast charging capability is an urgent requirement for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Borophene, with the merits of high capacity, high electronic conductivity and fast diffusion kinetics, holds great potential as anode for LIBs. However, it is difficult to fabricate for the intrinsic electron-deficiency of boron atom. Herein, heterogeneous-structured MoB2 (h-MoB2 ) with amorphous shell and crystalline core, is prepared by solid phase molten salt method. As demonstrated, crystalline core can encapsulate the honeycomb borophene within two adjacent Mo atoms, and amorphous shell can accommodate more lithium ions to strengthen the lithium storage capacity and diffusion kinetics. According to theoretical calculations, the lithium adsorption energy in MoB2 is about -2.7 eV, and the lithium diffusion energy barrier in MoB2 is calculated to be 0.199 eV, guaranteeing the enhanced adsorption capability and fast diffusion kinetic behavior of Li+ ions. As a result, h-MoB2 anode presents high capacity of 798 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , excellent rate performance of 183 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 and long-term cyclic stability for 1200 cycles. This work may inspire ideas for the fabrication of borophene analogs and two-dimensional metal borides.

Nanobubble water promotes anaerobic digestion of high-solids cattle manure under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

The gradual increase in cattle farming has led to a huge production of cattle manure (CM), but the conventional treatment methods are less efficient. In this study, the treatment method of anaerobic digestion (AD) of high-solids CM by combining nanobubble water (NBW) with different gases was proposed to present a new idea for the reduction, harmlessness, and resourcefulness of CM. It was found that the performance of the digester with added NBW was better than the control. Among them, the cumulative methane yield T-Air: 227.09 mL g-1 VSadded and T-CO2: 226.12 mL g-1 VSadded increased by 17.72 % and 17.22 %, respectively, compared with the control T: 192.90 mL g-1 VSadded under thermophilic conditions. Under mesophilic conditions, M-Air: 162.39 mL g-1 VSadded increased by 9.68 % compared with control M: 148.05 mL g-1 VSadded. Microbial communities analyzed at the genus level revealed that the relative abundance of bacteria favorable to hydrolysis and acid-producing processes, such as Defluviitalea, Haloplasma, and Bacillus, increased to varying degrees. Moreover, the relative abundance of archaea favorable for methanogenesis, such as Methanoculleus, Methanobrevibacter, and Methanosarcina, also increased to varying degrees. Therefore, the addition of NBW promoted the hydrolysis of high-solids CM, enhanced the stability of the reaction, improved the methanogenic performance, and increased the RA of favorable genera, which ultimately led to a better performance of the AD of high-solids CM.

A dual-targeted Gd-based contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging in tumor diagnosis

Enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has important clinical value in the diagnosis of tumors. Much effort has been made to improve the relaxivity and specificity of contrast agents (CAs) in tumor diagnosis over the past few decades. However, there is still a lack of CAs which not only enhance the signal intensity of tumors rather than surrounding tissues in MRI but also maintain a high signal intensity prolonged for a long time. Herein, we synthesized a dual-targeted CA, RGD-(DOTA-Gd)-TPP (RDP), in which RGD is used to target the αvβ3 integrin receptor overexpressed in tumor cells and TPP is used to bind to a mitochondrion further. The structure of RDP was characterized and its properties, such as relaxivity and biosafety, were measured and in vitro and in vivo MRI assays were carried out. It has been proven that RDP has higher relaxivity of aqueous solution than Magnevist used in clinics. Moreover, RDP achieved higher signal intensity and a longer signal duration in tumor imaging. Therefore, RDP can be applied as the potential dual-targeted MRI CA for clinical tumor diagnosis.

Enhanced recovery after surgery from 1997 to 2022: a bibliometric and visual analysis

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative management concept, but there is no article to comprehensively review the collaboration and impact of countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords on ERAS from a bibliometric perspective. This study assessed the evolution of clustering of knowledge structures and identified hot trends and emerging topics. Articles and reviews related to ERAS were retrieved through subject search from the Web of Science Core Collection. We used the following strategy: "TS = Enhanced recovery after surgery" OR "Enhanced Postsurgical Recovery" OR "Postsurgical Recoveries, Enhanced" OR "Postsurgical Recovery, Enhanced" OR "Recovery, Enhanced Postsurgical" OR "Fast track surgery" OR "improve surgical outcome". Bibliometric analyses were conducted on Excel 365, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrics (R-Tool of R-Studio). Totally 3242 articles and reviews from 1997 to 2022 were included. These publications were mainly from 684 journals in 78 countries, led by the United States and China. Kehlet H published the most papers and had the largest number of co-citations. Analysis of the journals with the most outputs showed that most journals mainly cover Surgery and Oncology. The hottest keyword is "enhanced recovery after surgery". Later appearing topics and keywords indicate that the hotspots and future research trends include ERAS protocols for other types of surgery and improving perioperative status, including "bariatric surgery", "thoracic surgery", and "prehabilitation". This study reviewed the research on ERAS using bibliometric and visualization methods, which can help scholars better understand the dynamic evolution of ERAS and provide directions for future research.

Treatment of auricular pseudocysts using enhanced negative drainage: a prospective study of 21 cases

OBJECTIVE

Auricular pseudocysts are rare, painless, benign intracartilaginous cysts of the auricle that are not lined by epithelium and have no known aetiology.

METHOD

This was a prospective study conducted in an ENT department from January 2020 to June 2022. In 21 patients, complete aspiration of the pseudocyst with enhanced negative drainage was performed. They were followed for a minimum of six months.

RESULTS

All patients completely responded to the negative drainage treatment. No cases of recurrence or obvious deformities were observed.

CONCLUSION

Aspiration with intensified negative drainage was associated with a positive response in patients with auricular pseudocysts. Complete resolution of the swelling can be achieved without any serious complications. Thus, it appears to be a simple and effective method for managing the condition.

Constructing Hollow Microcubes SnS2 as Negative electrode for Sodium-ion and Potassium-ion Batteries

Sodium/potassium-ion batteries (NIBs and KIBs) are considered the most promising candidates for lithium-ion batteries in energy storage fields. Tin sulfide (SnS2 ) is regarded as an attractive negative candidate for NIBs and KIBs thanks to its superior power density, high-rate performance and natural richness. Nevertheless, the slow dynamics, the enormous volume change and the decomposition of polysulfide intermediates limit its practical application. Herein, microcubes SnS2 were prepared through sacrificial MnCO3 template-assisted and a facile solvothermal reaction strategy and their performance was investigated in Na and K-based cells. The unique hollow cubic structure and well-confined SnS2 nanosheets play an important role in Na+ /K+ rapid kinetic and alleviating volume change. The effect of the carbon additives (Super P/C65) on the electrochemical properties were investigated thoroughly. The in operando and ex-situ characterization provide a piece of direct evidence to clarify the storage mechanism of such conversion-alloying type negative electrode materials.

CT whole lung radiomic nomogram: a potential biomarker for lung function evaluation and identification of COPD

BACKGROUND

Computed tomography (CT) plays a great role in characterizing and quantifying changes in lung structure and function of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to explore the performance of CT-based whole lung radiomic in discriminating COPD patients and non-COPD patients.

METHODS

This retrospective study was performed on 2785 patients who underwent pulmonary function examination in 5 hospitals and were divided into non-COPD group and COPD group. The radiomic features of the whole lung volume were extracted. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression was applied for feature selection and radiomic signature construction. A radiomic nomogram was established by combining the radiomic score and clinical factors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the predictive performance of the radiomic nomogram in the training, internal validation, and independent external validation cohorts.

RESULTS

Eighteen radiomic features were collected from the whole lung volume to construct a radiomic model. The area under the curve (AUC) of the radiomic model in the training, internal, and independent external validation cohorts were 0.888 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.869-0.906], 0.874 (95%CI 0.844-0.904) and 0.846 (95%CI 0.822-0.870), respectively. All were higher than the clinical model (AUC were 0.732, 0.714, and 0.777, respectively, P < 0.001). DCA demonstrated that the nomogram constructed by combining radiomic score, age, sex, height, and smoking status was superior to the clinical factor model.

CONCLUSIONS

The intuitive nomogram constructed by CT-based whole-lung radiomic has shown good performance and high accuracy in identifying COPD in this multicenter study.

Efficacy and safety of olmesartan medoxomil‑amlodipine besylate tablets (Sevikar®) in older patients with essential hypertension: Subgroup analysis from the Sevikar study

Essential hypertension is a notable threat for the older (age, ≥65 years) population. However, to the best of our knowledge, a real-world study assessing olmesartan medoxomil-amlodipine besylate (OM-AML) tablets in older Chinese patients with essential hypertension has not been performed. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of OM-AML tablets in these patients. A total of 463 older Chinese patients with essential hypertension treated with OM-AML (20/5 mg) tablets (Sevikar®) were analyzed in a prospective, single-arm, multi-center, real-world study. Seated systolic blood pressure (SeSBP) and seated diastolic blood pressure (SeDBP) at baseline, and at week (W)4 and W8 after OM-AML tablet administration were measured. The mean ± standard error change of SeSBP/SeDBP was -10.3±0.8/-4.6±0.5 and -12.5±0.8/-5.6±0.5 mmHg at W4 and W8, respectively. At W4, 74.1 and 26.8% of patients achieved BP target according to the China and American Heart Association (AHA) criteria, while at W8, 78.0 and 38.7% of patients reached these BP targets accordingly. Finally, 76.5 and 80.5% of patients achieved BP response at W4 and W8, respectively. Furthermore, home-measured SeSBP and SeDBP were significantly decreased from W1 to W8 (both P<0.001). Additionally, the satisfaction of both patients and physicians was elevated at W8 compared with at W0 (both P<0.001). The medication possession rate from baseline to W4 and W8 was 95.5 and 92.5%. The most common drug-associated adverse events by system organ classes were nervous system disorder (4.5%), vascular disorder (2.8%), and general disorder and administration site conditions (2.6%), which were generally mild. In conclusion, OM-AML tablets may be considered effective and safe in lowering BP, enabling the achievement of guideline-recommended BP targets in older Chinese patients with essential hypertension.

Bioremediation of acid mine drainage using sulfate-reducing wetland bioreactor: Filling substrates influence, sulfide oxidation and microbial community

Two sulfate-reducing wetland bioreactors (SRB-1 filled with lignocellulosic wastes and SRB-2 with river sand) were applied for synthetic acid mine drainage treatment with bio-waste fermentation liquid as electron donor, and the influence of filling substrates on sulfate reduction, sulfur transformation and microbial community was studied. The presence of lignocellulosic wastes (mixture of cow manure, bark, sawdust, peanut shell and straw) in SRB-1 promoted sulfate reduction efficiency (68.9%), sulfate reduction rate (42.1 ± 11 mg S/(L·d)), dissolved sulfide production rate (27.4 ± 7 mg S/(L·d)), and particularly caused high conversion ratio of sulfate reduction into dissolved sulfide (66.4%). In comparison, the relatively low sulfate reduction efficiency (42.9%), sulfate reduction rate (27.0 ± 10 mg S/(L·d)), dissolved sulfide production rate (5.6 ± 3 mg S/(L·d)) and low dissolved sulfide conversion efficiency (21.2%) occurred in SRB-2. Mixed organic substrates including easily assimilated electron donors (in manure) and lignocellulosic matter were effective to promote quick start and long-term microbial sulfate reduction. More than 98% of produced dissolved sulfide was oxidized dominantly by photoautotrophic green sulfur bacteria (genera Chlorobium and Chlorobaculum), of which 64.6% and 54.5% was converted into elemental sulfur for SRB-1 and SRB-2. The oxidation of sulfide into elemental sulfur for potential recovery rather than sulfate is preferred. Diverse sulfate reducing bacteria and sulfide oxidizing bacteria co-existed in the treatment system, which led to a sustainable sulfur transformation. High metal removal efficiency for Fe (99.6%, 92.5%), Cd (99.9%, 99.9%), Zn (99.4%, 98.5%), Cu (94.5%, 94.6%) except for Mn (9.3%, 3.6%) was achieved, and effluent pH increased to 6.5-7.7 and 6.7-7.7 for SRB-1 and SRB-2, respectively. Microbial community was regulated by filling substrates. Synergism between lignocellulosic decomposing bacteria and sulfate reducing bacteria played a vital role in lignocellulosic bioreactor treating AMD, in addition to fermentation liquid serving as effective electron donor.

Study on mechanical properties and acoustic emission characteristics of deep diorite under uniaxial compression

The research object is diorite in the Lingbei TBM section of the Hanjiang-To-Weihe River Qinling tunnel, with a buried depth of over 1 km. Using MTS-2000 microcomputer-controlled electro-hydraulic servo universal testing machine and DS5-16b acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system, uniaxial compression and acoustic emission monitoring tests were carried out on rock samples, to study the uniaxial compression mechanical properties and acoustic emission characteristics of the deep diorite. The results of the study indicate that: (1) During uniaxial compression, diorite undergoes four stages: initial compaction, elasticity, yield and failure, in which the curve of the initial compaction stage is significantly smoother. The uniaxial compressive strength is 41.95 MPã102.42 MPa, with an average of 74.07 Mpa; The axial peak strain ranges from 1 % to 1.4 %, and the failure mode belongs to brittle ductile splitting failure. (2) The cumulative ringing count and energy showed a very slow increase trend during the calm period; After entering a surge period (with the appearance of Kaiser points), both show a significant transition state; During the slow increase period, the overall growth rate of the two slowed down and remained almost silent. (3) On the basis of the analysis of RA-AF values during the deformation and rupture process of diorite, it can be seen that the damage type of diorite is tensile damage by the significant low RA value and high AF value characteristics, which coincides with the actual damage fracture characteristics of the rocks in the sample. (4) During the compaction stage, there are few acoustic emission location points, which correspond to low energy and are mainly distributed at the higher and lower ends of the sample; After entering the elasticity stage, the number of positioning points significantly increases and gradually expands towards the middle; Near Kaiser point, the number of location points and corresponding energy are both in a sharp increase state, and this trend is in good agreement with the changes in the ringing count-time and energy-time curves. (5) The damage time mainly starts at the end of the calm period, and the pattern of change in the damage curve coincides with the localization point and energy evolution. The results of the research can be used as a referential basis for the development of the excavation, protection and other construction plans for the Lingbei TBM section of the Hanjiang-To-Weihe River Qinling tunnel or similar surrounding rock tunnels, as well as for further conducting triaxial unloading tests on diorite.

γδ T cells: Major advances in basic and clinical research in tumor immunotherapy

ABSTRACT

γδ T cells are a kind of innate immune T cell. They have not attracted sufficient attention because they account for only a small proportion of all immune cells, and many basic factors related to these cells remain unclear. However, in recent years, with the rapid development of tumor immunotherapy, γδ T cells have attracted increasing attention because of their ability to exert cytotoxic effects on most tumor cells without major histocompatibility complex (MHC) restriction. An increasing number of basic studies have focused on the development, antigen recognition, activation, and antitumor immune response of γδ T cells. Additionally, γδ T cell-based immunotherapeutic strategies are being developed, and the number of clinical trials investigating such strategies is increasing. This review mainly summarizes the progress of basic research and the clinical application of γδ T cells in tumor immunotherapy to provide a theoretical basis for further the development of γδ T cell-based strategies in the future.

CircMETTL14(11)S upregulated METTL14 and induced CXCR4 to aggravate endothelial inflammation and atherosclerosis

Endothelial inflammatory response can induce a variety of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis (AS). As a member of the m6A methyltransferase family, methyltransferase like 14 (METTL14) was reported to propel endothelial inflammation and aggravate AS. In this study, qRT-PCR and western blot analyses were performed to detect the RNA and protein levels of genes. To analyze the cyclic structure and localization of circMETTL14(11)S, agarose gel electrophoresis, subcellular fractionation and FISH assays were conducted. The role of circMETTL14(11)S on endothelial inflammation was exposed by monocyte adhesion assay. Luciferase reporter, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), pull-down and RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays were conducted to explore the mechanism of circMETTL14(11)S on endothelial inflammation and AS. We found that circMETTL14(11)S (hsa_circ_0125169) expressed highly in TNF-α-induced endothelial inflammation and positively regulated the expression of METTL14 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). CircMETTL14(11)S facilitated endothelial inflammation of HUVECs by METTL14. Based on the nuclear location, circMETTL14(11)S was found to activate METTL14 transcription via cooperating with SRY-box transcription factor 2 (SOX2). METTL14 accelerated the m6A methylation and stabilization of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) mRNA. Further, the facilitation of circMETTL14(11)S/METTL14/CXCR4 on TNF-α-induced endothelial inflammation of HUVECs was verified. Collectively, circMETTL14(11)S/METTL14/CXCR4 axis aggravated endothelial inflammation and AS.

Improved Antitumor Efficacy of a Dextran-based Docetaxel-coupled Conjugate against Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

BACKGROUND

Most chemotherapeutic agents are characterized by poor water solubility and non-specific distribution. Polymer-based conjugates are promising strategies for overcoming these limitations.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to fabricate a polysaccharide, dextran-based, dual-drug conjugate by covalently grafting docetaxel (DTX) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) onto the bifunctionalized dextran through a long linker, and to investigate the antitumor efficacy of this conjugate against breast cancer.

METHODS

DTX was firstly coupled with DHA and covalently bounded with the bifunctionalized dextran (100 kDa) through a long linker to produce a conjugate dextran-DHA-DTX (termed C-DDD). Cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of this conjugate were measured in vitro. Drug biodistribution and pharmacokinetics were investigated through liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. The inhibitory effects on tumor growth were evaluated in MCF-7- and 4T1-tumor-bearing mice.

RESULTS

The loading capacity of the C-DDD for DTX was 15.90 (weight/weight). The C-DDD possessed good water solubility and was able to self-assemble into nanoparticles measuring 76.8 ± 5.5 nm. The maximum plasma concentration and area under the curve (0-∞) for the released DTX and total DTX from the C-DDD were significantly enhanced compared with the conventional DTX formulation. The C-DDD selectively accumulated in the tumor, with limited distribution was observed in normal tissues. The C-DDD exhibited greater antitumor activity than the conventional DTX in the triplenegative breast cancer model. Furthermore, the C-DDD nearly eliminated all MCF-7 tumors in nude mice without leading to systemic adverse effects.

CONCLUSION

This dual-drug C-DDD has the potential to become a candidate for clinical application through the optimization of the linker.

Efficacy and safety of olmesartan medoxomil-amlodipine besylate tablet in Chinese patients with essential hypertension: A prospective, single-arm, multi-center, real-world study

There lacks real-world study with a large sample size assessing olmesartan medoxomil-amlodipine besylate (OM-AML) tablet. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of OM-AML tablet in patients with essential hypertension. Totally, 1341 patients from 36 medical centers with essential hypertension who took OM-AML (20/5 mg) tablet were analyzed in the current prospective, single-arm, multi-center, real-world study (SVK study). Seated systolic blood pressure (SeSBP) and seated diastolic blood pressure (SeDBP) at baseline, week (W)4 and W8 were measured. The mean (±SE) change of SeSBP/SeDBP was -10.8 ± 0.4/-6.6 ± 0.3 mmHg at W4 and -12.7 ± 0.5/-7.6 ± 0.3 mmHg at W8, respectively. At W4, 78.8% and 29.0% patients achieved BP target by China and American Heart Association (AHA) criteria; at W8, 84.7% and 36.5% patients reached blood pressure (BP) target by China and AHA criteria, accordingly. Meanwhile, 80.2% and 86.4% patients achieved BP response at W4 and W8, respectively. Home-measured SeSBP and SeDBP decreased from W1 to W8 (both p < .001). Besides, patients' and physicians' satisfaction were elevated at W8 compared with W0 (both p < .001). The medication possession rate was 94.8% from baseline to W4 and 91.3% from baseline to W8. The most common drug-related adverse events were nervous system disorders (4.6%), vascular disorders (2.6%), and general disorders and administration site conditions (2.3%) by system organ class, which were generally mild and manageable. In conclusion, OM-AML tablet is one of the best antihypertensive agents in patients with essential hypertension.

Long-term efficacy of microwave ablation for multifocal papillary thyroid microcarcinoma: a 5-year follow-up study

OBJECTIVES

Microwave ablation (MWA) has achieved excellent long-term efficacy in treating unifocal papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (UPTMC). The therapeutic effect of this treatment on multifocal papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (MPTMC) is unknown. Therefore, we evaluated the long-term efficacy of MWA for low-risk MPTMC and to provide evidence-based medicine for the revision of clinical guidelines.

METHODS

This study included 66 MPTMC patients with a total of 158 lesions, all of whom received MWA. We collected and retrospectively analyzed the patients' follow-up data before MWA, at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months posttreatment and every 6 months thereafter until 5 years posttreatment. We evaluated the MWA complication rate, technical success rate (TSR), lesion volume reduction rate (VRR), and complete disappearance rate (CDR) during follow-up and in those patients with tumor progression and delayed surgery.

RESULTS

After 60 months of follow-up, all 158 lesions disappeared in 66 patients, and the volume was reduced from 43.82 mm3 to 0.00 mm3. The TSR and VRR were both 100%. The CDRs at 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years were 57.59%, 93.67%, and 100%, respectively. The complication rate was 3.03% (2/66), and the incidence of tumor progression was 3.03% (2/66), including one new intrathyroidal lesion and one cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM). These lesions were retreated with MWA, and the lesions disappeared during the follow-up period.

CONCLUSIONS

Ultrasound-guided MWA for low-risk MPTMC is safe and effective and may serve as an alternative option for patients who refuse surgery or active surveillance (AS).

Results of flow cytometric detection of gamma-deltaT cells in peripheral blood of patients with ankylosing spondylitis: a pilot study

Previous studies have suggested that gamma-delta T cells play an important role in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). In this pilot study, the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and healthy volunteers were stained and analyzed by flow cytometry to distinguish gamma-delta T cells and its subtypes, and then to report the distribution of gamma-delta T cells and iyts subtypes and their correlation with ankylosing spondylitis. A total of 17 patients with active AS and 10 age- and gender- matched healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study, and their peripheral blood were drawn to collect mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Flow cytometry was used to analyze gamma-delta T cell subpopulations by measuring the surface and intracellular expressions of phenotypic markers. Serum levels of inflammatory and bone turnover markers were measured, and their correlations with subpopulations of gamma-delta T cells were evaluated. In patients with AS, the Vdelta2 fractions within gamma-delta T cells and CD3+ T cells decreased significantly, in particular, the proportions of CD27+ Vdelta2 T cells, CD86+CD80+ Vdelta1 T cells, and IL17A-secreting and TNFalpha-secreting Vdelta1 T cells within the parental cells decreased significantly. gamma-delta T cells/PBMCs, Vdelta2 cells/gamma-delta T cells, and Vdelta2 cells/CD3+ T cells were negatively correlated with CRP, whereas Vdelta1 cells/CD3+ T cells were negatively correlated with ESR. Vdelta1 cells/gamma-delta T cells were positively correlated with CRP, gamma-deltaT cells/PBMCs were positively correlated with beta-CTx, CD69+CD25+ and IL-17A-secreting Vdelta1 cells were positively correlated with TP1NP, and CD69+CD25+ Vdelta1 and Vdelta2 cells were positively correlated with osteocalcin. Decreases in peripheral Vdelta2, CD27+ Vdelta2, CD86+CD80+ Vdelta1, and IL17A or TNFalpha-secreting Vdelta1 T cells are associated with AS. The correlations between gamma-delta T cell subpopulations and CRP and the CD69+CD25+ subpopulation with TP1NP or osteocalcin suggest that an imbalance in peripheral gamma-delta T cell subpopulations contributes to the pathogenesis of AS.

Influence of unsaturated fatty acids on the antitumor activity of polymeric conjugates grafted with cabazitaxel against prostate cancer

Cabazitaxel (CTX) is a medication used for treating metastatic prostate cancer. However, its effectiveness is majorly limited by its poor water solubility and lack of tumor targeting. In this study, three unsaturated fatty acids, GLA, ALA and DHA, were separately connected with CTX and then covalently attached to bifunctionalized dextran through a linker to produce three dual drug conjugates named dextran-GLA-CTX, dextran-ALA-CTX and dextran-DHA-CTX. The three conjugates displayed enhanced solubility of CTX in water and improved antitumor effects compared to the conventional CTX formulation. The results also confirmed that dextran-GLA-CTX exhibited the strongest antitumor activity, while dextran-DHA-CTX displayed less efficacy, as evaluated through xenografted nude mice bearing PC-3 and DU145 prostate cancer cells. Additionally, dextran-GLA-CTX showed greater inhibition of tumor growth than dextran-CTX. Moreover, the dextran-GLA-CTX conjugate was found to prolong the half-life of CTX in plasma and selectively accumulate in tumors. This study revealed that unsaturated fatty acids can enhance the antitumor activity of dextran-based conjugates grafted with CTX.

A new species and new records of Hymenopellis and Xerula (Agaricales, Physalacriaceae) from China

Hymenopellis is the genus that exhibits the highest number of species within the Xerula/Oudemansiella complex. Numerous species of Hymenopellis demonstrate edibility, and some of these species have been domesticated and cultivated. During an extensive survey carried out in Henan and Jilin Provinces, China, a substantial quantity of Hymenopellis specimens was gathered as a component of the macrofungal resource inventory. Based on the findings of morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies, a new species, Hymenopellis biyangensis, has been identified. A new record species, Hymenopellis altissima, has been discovered in China. Additionally, two new record species, Hymenopellis raphanipes and Xerula strigosa, have been found in Henan Province. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit ribosomal (nrLSU) were used to establish a phylogeny for species identification. Detailed descriptions, field habitat maps and line drawings of these species are presented. The discussion focuses on the relationships between newly discovered species and other related taxa. Additionally, this study provides and a key to the documented species of Hymenopellis and Xerula found in China.

Short-Process Regeneration of Highly Stable Spherical LiCoO2 Cathode Materials from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries through Carbonate Precipitation

High-efficacy recycling of spent lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2 ) batteries is one of the key tasks in realizing a global resource security strategy due to the rareness of lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co) resources. However, it is of great significance to develop the innovative recycle methods for spent LiCoO2 , simultaneously realizing the efficient recovery of valuable elements and the regeneration of high-performance LiCoO2 . Herein, a novel strategy of regenerating LiCoO2 cathode is proposed, which involves the preparation of micro-spherical aluminum (Al)-doped lithium-lacked precursor (Li2x Co1-x-y Al2/3y CO3, remarked as "PLCAC") via ammonium bicarbonate coprecipitation. The comprehensive conditions affecting particle growth kinetics, morphology and particle size the has been investigated in detail by physical characterizations and electrochemical measurements. And the optimized Al-doped LiCoO2 materials with high-density sphericity (LiCo1-z Alz O2 , remarked as "LCAO") shows a high initial specific capacity of 161 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and excellent capacity retention of 99.5 % within 100 cycles at 1 C in the voltage range of 2.8 to 4.3 V. Our work provides valuable insights into the featured design of LiCoO2 precursors and cathode materials from spent LiCoO2 batteries, potentially guaranteeing the high-efficacy recycling and utilization of strategic resources.

Direct regeneration of spent LiFePO4 materials via a green and economical one-step hydrothermal process

The rapid development of electronic devices, electric vehicles and mobile energy storage devices, has increasingly emphasized the shortage of lithium resources for us in lithium-ion batteries are developing rapidly. The key to the disposal of spent lithium-ion batteries is to carry out green and efficient regeneration. Herein, we propose a one-step hydrothermal process for the direct regeneration of spent LiFePO4. To reduce the Fe3+ in the spent LiFePO4, the hydroxyl group was oxidized to an aldehyde group via a decarburization reaction, with DL-malic acid utilized as a low-cost and environmentally friendly reducing agent. The effects of various different Li concentrations, hydrothermal times and hydrothermal temperatures on the performance of regenerated LiFePO4 were investigated. The results revealed optimal electrochemical performance under a Li concentration of 1.2 mol L-1, a hydrothermal time of 6 h, and a hydrothermal temperature of 100 °C. The cycling stability of LiFePO4 regenerated under these conditions considerably improved. The initial discharge specific capacity and the discharge specific capacity of the regenerated LFP after 200 cycles were 138.4 mAh g-1 and 136.6 mAh g-1. All coulomb efficiencies of the regenerated LFP were above 97.2 %, and the capacity retention rate was 98.7%. This developed method can therefore be considered a green and feasible means for regeneration of LiFePO4.

Obacunone alleviates chronic pelvic pain and pro-inflammatory depolarization of macrophage induced by experimental autoimmune prostatitis in mice

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is a common complication of prostatitis, which was associated with the pathological depolarization of macrophage and the neuroinflammation. However, its underlying reason is far from clear and few effective treatments is applicable. In this study, we tested the effect of obacunone (Oba), a highly oxygenated triterpenoid, on CPPS. The experimental autoimmune prostatitis (EAP) was induced by subcutaneous injection of heterologous prostate homogenate in mice. We found that EAP led to prostatodynia, neuronal activation of spinal dorsal horn, and the pro-inflammatory depolarization of macrophage within prostate, which was significantly alleviated by oral administration of Oba in a dose-dependent manner. Mechanistically, EAP-induced production of IL-6 on prostatic macrophage was suppressed by Oba. Moreover, co-administration of Oba and MIF inhibitor ISO-1 did not lead to additive effect when compared with either alone. In summary, we conclude that Oba prevents the production of macrophage-derived pro-inflammatory factors by inhibiting MIF, which eventually alleviates CPPS after prostatitis.

Atypical location of lipoblastoma in a 5-year-old girl

We reported a perineal lipoblastoma in a 5-year-old girl located in the right labia mayor. The lesion gradually increased within 6 months. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a limited solid heterogenous tumor with fatty component. After it had been surgically removed, the anatomopathological examination confirmed that it was a lipoblastoma. Lipoblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of infancy and early childhood. Symptoms vary depending on localization; signs of compression of adjacent organs may be seen. This type of unusual soft tissue tumors occurred most often in under 3 years old. The localization of lipoblastomas is predominantly in the extremities but may be also found in other sites including the head and neck, trunk, mediastinum, kidney, mesentery, retropritoneum and perineum. The suspicion should be considered according to ultrasound and MRI findings.

CT-Based Radiomic Nomogram for the Prediction of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Patients with Lung cancer

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

To develop and validate a model for predicting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in patients with lung cancer based on computed tomography (CT) radiomic signatures and clinical and imaging features.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We retrospectively enrolled 443 patients with lung cancer who underwent pulmonary function test as the primary cohort. They were randomly assigned to the training (n = 311) or validation (n = 132) set in a 7:3 ratio. Additionally, an independent external cohort of 54 patients was evaluated. The radiomic lung nodule signature was constructed using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm, while key variables were selected using logistic regression to develop the clinical and combined models presented as a nomogram.

RESULTS

COPD was significantly related to the radiomics signature in both cohorts. Moreover, the signature served as an independent predictor of COPD in the multivariate regression analysis. For the training, internal, and external cohorts, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC, AUC) values of our radiomics signature for COPD prediction were 0.85, 0.85, and 0.76, respectively. Additionally, the AUC values of the radiomic nomogram for COPD prediction were 0.927, 0.879, and 0.762 for the three cohorts, respectively, which outperformed the other two models.

CONCLUSION

The present study presents a nomogram that incorporates radiomics signatures and clinical and radiological features, which could be used to predict the risk of COPD in patients with lung cancer with one-stop chest CT scanning.

[Relation factor analysis for the short-term preservation of ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy]

Objectives: To analyze the factors relative to the short-term preservation of ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy. Methods: The clinical data of 83 patients who were treated with partial nephrectomy from December 2014 to December 2019 in the Department of Urology, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center were retrospectively analyzed. There were 54 males and 29 females, aging (M (IQR)) 49 (17) years (range: 27 to 74 years). The ischemia time in operation was 25 (18) minutes (range: 10 to 67 minutes). Emission computed tomography scan and CT scan were performed before (within 1 month) and after (3 to 12 months) surgery. The volume of the ipsilateral and contralateral kidney was measured on the basis of preoperative and postoperative CT scans. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) specifically in each kidney was estimated by emission computed tomography. Recovery from ischemia is determined by the formula: GFR preservation/volume saved×100%. Linear regression was used to explore the factors ralative to the short-term preservation of ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy. Results: The GFR preservation of the ipsilateral kidney was 80.9 (25.2) % (range: 31.0% to 109.4%). The volume loss of the kidney resulted in a decrease of 12.0% (5.8 ml/(min×1.96 m2)) of GFR, while the ischemic injury resulted in a decrease of 6.5% (2.5 ml/(min×1.96 m2)) of GFR. The volume saved from the ipsilateral kidney was 87.1 (12.9) % (range: 27.0% to 131.7%). Recovery from ischemia was 93.5 (17.5) % (range:44.3% to 178.3%). In multivariate analysis, GFR preservation of the ipsilateral kidney was significantly correlated with the volume saved of the ipsilateral kidney (β=0.383, 95%CI: 0.144 to 0.622, P=0.002). It was not related to the ischemia time (β=0.046, 95%CI:-0.383 to 0.475, P=0.831). Conclusion: In the condition of limited ischemic time, in the short term ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy is mainly determined by the loss of kidney volume, while ischemic injury only plays a minor role.

Materials Design and System Innovation for Direct and Indirect Seawater Electrolysis

Green hydrogen production from renewably powered water electrolysis is considered as an ideal approach to decarbonizing the energy and industry sectors. Given the high-cost supply of ultra-high-purity water, as well as the mismatched distribution of water sources and renewable energies, combining seawater electrolysis with coastal solar/offshore wind power is attracting increasing interest for large-scale green hydrogen production. However, various impurities in seawater lead to corrosive and toxic halides, hydroxide precipitation, and physical blocking, which will significantly degrade catalysts, electrodes, and membranes, thus shortening the stable service life of electrolyzers. To accelerate the development of seawater electrolysis, it is crucial to widen the working potential gap between oxygen evolution and chlorine evolution reactions and develop flexible and highly efficient seawater purification technologies. In this review, we comprehensively discuss present challenges, research efforts, and design principles for direct/indirect seawater electrolysis from the aspects of materials engineering and system innovation. Further opportunities in developing efficient and stable catalysts, advanced membranes, and integrated electrolyzers are highlighted for green hydrogen production from both seawater and low-grade water sources.

[Long-term survival analysis of 1 367 patients treated with radical nephrectomy from a single center]

Objective: To report the long-term survival of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients treated with radical nephrectomy in Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, pathological and follow-up records of 1 367 non-metastatic RCC patients treated with radical nephrectomy from 1999 to 2020 in this center. The primary endpoint of this study was overall survival rate. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and group differences were compared through Log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate Cox analysis were fit to determine the clinical and pathological features associated with overall survival rate. Results: A total of 1 367 patients treated with radical nephrectomy with complete follow-up data were included in the study. The median follow-up time was 52.6 months, and 1 100 patients survived and 267 died, with the median time to overall survival not yet reached. The 5-year and 10-year overall survival rates were 82.8% and 74.9%, respectively. The 5-year and 10-year overall survival rates of Leibovich low-risk patients were 93.3% and 88.2%, respectively; of Leibovich intermediate-risk patients were 82.2% and 72.3%, respectively; and of Leibovich high-risk patients were 50.5% and 30.2%, respectively. There were significant differences in the long-term survival among the three groups (P<0.001). The 10-year overall survival rates for patients with pT1, pT2, pT3 and pT4 RCC were 83.2%, 73.6%, 55.0% and 31.4%, respectively. There were significant differences among pT1, pT2, pT3 and pT4 patients(P<0.001). The 5-year and 10-year overall survival rates of patients with lymph node metastasis were 48.5% and 35.6%, respectively, and those of patients without lymph node metastasis were 85.1% and 77.5%, respectively. There was significant difference in the long-term survival between patients with lymph node metastasis and without lymph node metastasis. The 10-year overall survival rate was 96.2% for nuclear Grade 1, 81.6% for nuclear Grade 2, 60.5% for nuclear Grade 3, and 43.4% for nuclear Grade 4 patients. The difference was statistically significant. There was no significant difference in the long-term survival between patients with localized renal cancer (pT1-2N0M0) who underwent open surgery and minimally invasive surgery (10-year overall survival rate 80.5% vs 85.6%, P=0.160). Multivariate Cox analysis showed that age≥55 years (HR=2.11, 95% CI: 1.50-2.96, P<0.001), T stage(T3+ T4 vs T1a: HR=2.37, 95% CI: 1.26-4.46, P=0.008), local lymph node metastasis (HR=3.04, 95%CI: 1.81-5.09, P<0.001), nuclear grade (G3-G4 vs G1: HR=4.21, 95%CI: 1.51-11.75, P=0.006), tumor necrosis (HR=1.66, 95% CI: 1.17-2.37, P=0.005), sarcomatoid differentiation (HR=2.39, 95% CI: 1.31-4.35, P=0.005) and BMI≥24kg/m(2) (HR=0.56, 95%CI: 0.39-0.80, P=0.001) were independent factors affecting long-term survival after radical nephrectomy. Conclusions: The long-term survival of radical nephrectomy in patients with renal cell carcinoma is satisfactory. Advanced age, higher pathological stage and grade, tumor necrosis and sarcomatoid differentiation were the main adverse factors affecting the prognosis of patients. Higher body mass index was a protective factor for the prognosis of patients.

Multifunctional transmission-type microwave metadevice based on spin-decoupled and linear-to-circular metasurfaces

Metasurfaces have enabled precise electromagnetic (EM) wave manipulation with strong potential to obtain unprecedented functionalities and multifunctional behavior in flat optical devices. One promising aspect to achieve multifunction is polarization-dependent metadevices enabled by simultaneous phase control over orthogonally polarized waves. Among these, metasurfaces with geometric phase shows their natural and robust phase control ability over different circularly polarized waves. However, the phase responses under the circularly polarized incidence are locked to be opposite with each other, resulting in limited multifunctionality. In this study, we propose what we believe to be a novel transmission-type microwave metadevice constructed by linear-to-circular metasurface and spin-decoupled metasurface. By endowing independent phase adjustment capability to each unit structure in a spin-decoupled metasurface, the metadevice can reconfigure arbitrary phase wavefronts under orthogonal polarization state incidence, thereby achieving flexible multifunctionality. As a proof-of-concept, the feasibility and reliability of proposed metasurfaces were verified by simulating multifunctional directional deflection, off-axis focusing, and focused vortex beam generation. Finally, the multifunctional manipulation capability of the metadevice is successfully demonstrated by actually measuring the generation of orbital angular momentum modes. This work is expected to drive the application development of metasurface devices in wireless communication.

Endogenous H2O2 Self-Replenishment and Sustainable Cascades Enhance the Efficacy of Sonodynamic Therapy

Purpose

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), with its high tissue penetration and noninvasive advantages, represents an emerging approach to eradicating solid tumors. However, the outcomes of SDT are typically hampered by the low oxygen content and immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Accordingly, we constructed a cascade nanoplatform to regulate the TME and improve the anti-tumor efficiency of SDT.

Methods

In this study, we rationally design cascade nanoplatform by incorporating immunostimulant hyaluronic acid (HA) and sonosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) on the polydopamine nanocarrier that is pre-doped with platinum nanozymes (designated Ce6/Pt@PDA-HA, PPCH).

Results

The cascade reactions of PPCH are evidenced by the results that HA exhibits reversing immunosuppressive that converts M2 macrophages into M1 macrophages in situ, while producing H2O2, and then platinum nanozymes further catalyze the H2O2 to produce O2, and O2 produces abundant singlet oxygen (1O2) under the action of Ce6 and low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU), resulting in a domino effect and further amplifying the efficacy of SDT. Due to its pH responsiveness and mitochondrial targeting, PPCH effectively accumulates in tumor cells. Under LIFU irradiation, PPCH effectively reverses immunosuppression, alleviates hypoxia in the TME, enhances reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and enhances SDT efficacy for eliminating tumor cells in vivo and in vitro. Meanwhile, an in vivo dual-modal imaging including fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging achieves precise tumor diagnosis.

Conclusion

This cascade nanoplatform will provide a promising strategy for enhancing SDT eradication against tumors by modulating immunosuppression and relieving hypoxia.

Genotype 4 HEV infection triggers the initiation and development of acute pancreatitis

The role of HEV infection in AP remains unclear. 1000 patients with AP and 1000 HCs were enrolled, and pancreatitis was evaluated in HEV-infected rhesus macaques. The positive rates of anti-HEV IgG, IgM, and HEV RNA in the AP patients were significantly higher than HCs. With the increase in the severity of AP, the percentage of HEV infection increased. AP patients were divided into AP- and AP + AHE groups. The percentage of severe AP in the AP + AHE group was significantly higher than in the AP- group. HEV infection was one of the main independent risk factors and had high predictive power for AP outcomes. A high level of HEV titer would prolong the recovery time and increase the risk of recurrent AP. Moreover, AP + AHE patients receiving conservative treatment showed a better prognosis. Furthermore, HEV can replicate in the pancreas of rhesus macaques. The pancreatic islet structure was damaged, the tissue was loose after 272 dpi, and a large amount of hyperemia appeared after 770 dpi. HEV infection also caused a large number of inflammatory cells in the pancreas. The pancreas and liver had a comparable viral load. HEV infection affects AP's occurrence, development, and prognosis.

Optimized Red-Absorbing Dyes for Imaging and Sensing

Rhodamine dyes are excellent scaffolds for developing a broad range of fluorescent probes. A key property of rhodamines is their equilibrium between a colorless lactone and fluorescent zwitterion. Tuning the lactone-zwitterion equilibrium constant (KL-Z) can optimize dye properties for specific biological applications. Here, we use known and novel organic chemistry to prepare a comprehensive collection of rhodamine dyes to elucidate the structure-activity relationships that govern KL-Z. We discovered that the auxochrome substituent strongly affects the lactone-zwitterion equilibrium, providing a roadmap for the rational design of improved rhodamine dyes. Electron-donating auxochromes, such as julolidine, work in tandem with fluorinated pendant phenyl rings to yield bright, red-shifted fluorophores for live-cell single-particle tracking (SPT) and multicolor imaging. The N-aryl auxochrome combined with fluorination yields red-shifted Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) quencher dyes useful for creating a new semisynthetic indicator to sense cAMP using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Together, this work expands the synthetic methods available for rhodamine synthesis, generates new reagents for advanced fluorescence imaging experiments, and describes structure-activity relationships that will guide the design of future probes.

Photonic spin Hall effect in a graphene-incorporated quasi-PT symmetric system and the miniaturization of nanophotonic devices

By inserting the monolayer graphene between the balanced gain and loss layers, the graphene-incorporated quasi-parity-time (PT) symmetric structure is established. In this contribution, the introduction of graphene provides a new degree of freedom to manipulate the optical performance as well as the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE). The coherent perfect absorption (CPA)-laser mode still remains in the graphene-incorporated quasi-PT symmetric system, and the spin shift of transmitted light can be significantly enhanced (i.e., up to its upper limitation) in the vicinity of CPA-laser mode, which is 18 times larger than the value of a simple PT symmetric structure. In addition, the excitation of the CPA-laser mode and the huge spin shift of transmitted light can be achieved with the thin gain/loss layers, which will be conducive to the miniaturization of nanophotonic devices based on the photonic SHE in the future.

Carrier lifetime modulation on current capability of SiC PiN diodes in a pulsed system

Silicon carbide (SiC) PiN diode has shown substantial promise as the freewheel diode for switch protection in a pulsed system. In this paper, we investigate the carrier lifetime (τ) modulation on pulsed current capability of SiC PiN diodes. The carrier lifetime in 4H-SiC is modulated by the generation of the Z1/2 center through neutron irradiation. Surprisingly, we found that the pulsed current of SiC PiN diodes shows a limited improvement when the carrier lifetime (τ) increases from 0.22 to 1.3 μs, while is significantly promoted as the carrier lifetime increases from 0.03 to 0.22 μs. This changing trend is obviously different from the on-state resistance, which decreases with the increased carrier lifetime. The simulation result indicates that the heat generation (i.e., maximum temperature rise) inside the PiN diodes, especially in the drift layer, is remarkably aggravated in the pulse tests for τ < 0.1 μs, but which is significantly suppressed as carrier lifetime rises to 0.2 μs and above. Therefore, the dependence of pulsed current on carrier lifetime is ascribed to the heat generation resulting from the carrier lifetime controlled conductivity modulation effect, which hence affects the temperature rise and brings about the failure of SiC PiN diodes under high pulsed current.

Joint duration-cost-quality optimization model for complex product supply chains under contingency conditions

The Graphical Evaluation and Review Technique (GERT) and complex networks are used to simulate and analyse complex product supply chain networks based on the characteristics of complex product supply chain networks. And the traditional GERT is improved by constructing a grey parametric GERT network with restricted output results, taking into account the fact that the duration, product quality and product cost of each supplier in a complex product supply chain are interval values rather than definite values, and that customers have restrictions on the duration, product quality and product cost of the final product. The functional relationship between product quality, product cost and duration is analysed, and two satisfaction functions for duration and cost are constructed in order to quantify the multi-objective requirements of shortening duration, saving product cost and guaranteeing product quality for complex products under emergency situations. Then, a duration-cost-quality model for complex product supply chains in contingency situations is constructed to obtain the better duration, product cost and product quality of each supplier by optimising the indicator parameters in the network. Finally, the scientific validity and effectiveness of the model and method are verified by means of arithmetic example. The results show that the method is able to analyse the optimal duration, product quality and product cost of each supplier, and the main manufacturer can obtain an optimised combination of duration, cost and quality for a complex product supply chain in different contingency situation. To further promote the sustainable and secure development of complex product supply chains, this paper also suggests the integration of data sharing and blockchain technology with complex product supply chains to develop dynamic supply chain feedback management systems.

Clinical Implementation of an Automated IMRT/VMAT Treatment Planning Tool

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

To create an in-house automated treatment planning tool for IMRT/VMAT treatments and evaluate the dosimetric plan quality against manually generated plans.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A scripting application programming interface is employed to interact with a commercial treatment planning system (TPS) to implement automatic plan evaluation and update optimization parameters by mimicking the human planning process. The automated planning performs in an iterative fashion until reaching an acceptable tradeoff among target coverage/dose homogeneity and sparing of critical organs at risk. In each iteration, the dose constraints, priorities, and optimization structures for are automatically updated based on the results of the current iteration. Twenty previously treated plans (10 prostate and 10 head and neck), were preliminarily used to evaluate the performance of the automated planning tool. The differences in target and organ-at-risk metrics from the manually generated clinical plans were analyzed using paired t-test to evaluate clinical acceptability of tour automated planning tool. The current in-house-developed automated planning solution is able to create plans for different disease sites, including head & neck, prostate, pelvis, and lung. So far, the VMAT plans for more than 150 different cases have been generated with the tool. The results for these were also evaluated.

RESULTS

Compared to the manually generated clinical head and neck plans, all auto plans achieved PTV D95% coverage and critical organs at risk sparing without statistically significant change in average global Dmax (107.4% for manual vs 107.3% for automated plans). The auto-planning solution provided reduced maximum doses to brainstem and spinal cord (average reductions with standard deviations of 5.1 ± 2.6 Gy and 2.9 ± 1.4 Gy, respectively, all p <0.03), reduced average mean doses to contralateral parotid, ipsilateral parotid, contralateral submandibular gland, pharynx, esophagus, cochleae (reductions of 2.2 ± 2.9 Gy, 4.8 ± 4.7 Gy, 3.6 ± 5.2 Gy, 2.0 ± 7.1 Gy, 3.9 ± 2.6 Gy, 3.8 ± 5.0 Gy, respectively, all p < 0.045). Similar results were observed for the prostate plans. With the same PTV coverage and without statistically significant change in average global Dmax (106.5% for manual vs 106.8% for automated plans), the automated solution provided superior sparing for both bladder and rectum. Bladder V75, V70, V65 were reduced by 0.6% ± 2.1%, 0.8% ± 2.5%, and 0.9% ± 2.9% (all p <0.04), respectively. Rectum V75, V70, V65, V60 were reduced by 1.0% ± 2.3%, 1.2% ± 2.8%, 1.3% ± 3.2%, 1.6% ± 3.6% (all p < 0.01), respectively.

CONCLUSION

Our automated treatment planning solution is capable of efficiently generating VMAT plans for different disease sites with superior dosimetric indices compared to manually generated plans. Our tool is integrated within a commercial TPS platform, so it has the advantage of seamless adoption into the standard workflow to improve plan quality and treatment planning efficiency in our clinic.

Effect of Multiple Structural Parameters on the Performance of a Micromixer with Baffles, Obstacles, and Gaps

As an essential component of chip laboratories and microfluidic systems, micromixers are widely used in fields such as chemical and biological analysis. In this work, a square cavity micromixer with multiple structural parameters (baffles, obstacles, and gaps) has been proposed to further improve the mixing performance of micromixers. This study examines the comprehensive effects of various structural parameters on mixing performance. The impact of baffle length, obstacle length-to-width ratio, gap width, and obstacle shape on the mixing index and pressure drop were numerically studied at different Reynolds numbers (Re). The results show that the mixing index increases with baffle length and obstacle length-to-width ratio and decreases with gap width at Re = 0.1, 1, 10, 20, 40, and 60. The mixing index can reach more than 0.98 in the range of Re ≥ 20 when the baffle length is 150 μm, the obstacle length-to-width ratio is 600/100, and the gap width is 200 μm. The pressure drop of the microchannel is proportional to baffle length and obstacle length-to-width ratio. Combining baffles and obstacles can further improve the mixing performance of square cavity micromixers. A longer baffle length, larger obstacle length-to-width ratio, narrower gap width, and a more symmetrical structure are conducive to improving the mixing index. However, the impact of pressure drop must also be considered comprehensively. The research results provide references and new ideas for passive micromixer structural design.

Ultra-low-dose spectral-detector computed tomography for the accurate quantification of pulmonary nodules: an anthropomorphic chest phantom study

PURPOSE

To assess the quantification accuracy of pulmonary nodules using virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) derived from spectral-detector computed tomography (CT) under an ultra-low-dose scan protocol.

METHODS

A chest phantom consisting of 12 pulmonary nodules was scanned using spectral-detector CT at 100 kVp/10 mAs, 100 kVp/20 mAs, 120 kVp/10 mAs, and 120 kVp/30 mAs. Each scanning protocol was repeated three times. Each CT scan was reconstructed utilizing filtered back projection, hybrid iterative reconstruction, iterative model reconstruction (IMR), and VMIs of 40-100 keV. The signal-to-noise ratio and air noise of images, absolute differences, and absolute percentage measurement errors (APEs) of the diameter, density, and volume of the four scan protocols and ten reconstruction images were compared.

RESULTS

With each fixed reconstruction image, the four scanning protocols exhibited no significant differences in APEs for diameter and density (all P > 0.05). Of the four scan protocols and ten reconstruction images, APEs for nodule volume had no significant differences (all P > 0.05). At 100 kVp/10 mAs, APEs for density using IMR were the lowest (APE-mean: 6.69), but no significant difference was detected between VMIs at 50 keV (APE-mean: 11.69) and IMR (P = 0.666). In the subgroup analysis, at 100 kVp/10 mAs, there were no significant differences between VMIs at 50 keV and IMR in diameter and density (all P > 0.05). The radiation dose at 100 kVp/10 mAs was reduced by 77.8% compared with that at 120 kVp/30 mAs.

CONCLUSION

Compared with IMR, reconstruction at 100 kVp/10 mAs and 50 keV provides a more accurate quantification of pulmonary nodules, and the radiation dose is reduced by 77.8% compared with that at 120 kVp/30 mAs, demonstrating great potential for ultra-low-dose spectral-detector CT.

Insight into Accelerating Polysulfides Redox Kinetics by BN@MXene Heterostructure for Li-S Batteries

Sluggish redox kinetics and shuttle effect of polysulfides hinder the extensive application of the lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein a functional heterostructure of boron nitride (BN) and MXene with an alternately layered structure (BN@MXene) is designed as separator interlayer. High efficiency Li+ transmission, uniform lithium deposition, strong adsorption, and efficient catalytic conversion activities of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) realized by this heterostructure are confirmed by experiments and theoretical calculations. The alternately layered structure provides unblocked ion transmission channels and abundant active sites to accelerate the polysulfides redox kinetics with reduced energy barriers of oxidation and reduction reactions. As a result, the LSBs deliver an initial discharge capacity of up to 1273.9 mAh g-1 at 0.2 °C and a low decay of 0.058% per cycle in long-term cycling up to 700 cycles at 1 °C. This work provides an effective designing strategy to accelerate the polysulfides redox kinetics for advanced Li-S electrochemical system.

Radiomics-based Machine Learning Methods for Volume Doubling Time Prediction of Pulmonary Ground-glass Nodules With Baseline Chest Computed Tomography

PURPOSE

Reliable prediction of volume doubling time (VDT) is essential for the personalized management of pulmonary ground-glass nodules (GGNs). We aimed to determine the optimal VDT prediction method by comparing different machine learning methods only based on the baseline chest computed tomography (CT) images.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Seven classical machine learning methods were evaluated in terms of their stability and performance for VDT prediction. The VDT, calculated by the preoperative and baseline CT, was divided into 2 groups with a cutoff value of 400 days. A total of 90 GGNs from 3 hospitals constituted the training set, and 86 GGNs from the fourth hospital served as the external validation set. The training set was used for feature selection and model training, and the validation set was used to evaluate the predictive performance of the model independently.

RESULTS

The eXtreme Gradient Boosting showed the highest predictive performance (accuracy: 0.890±0.128 and area under the ROC curve (AUC): 0.896±0.134), followed by the neural network (NNet) (accuracy: 0.865±0.103 and AUC: 0.886±0.097). While regarding stability, the NNet showed the highest robustness against data perturbation (relative SDs [%] of mean AUC: 10.9%). Therefore, the NNet was chosen as the final model, achieving high accuracy of 0.756 in the external validation set.

CONCLUSION

The NNet is a promising machine learning method to predict the VDT of GGNs, which would assist in the personalized follow-up and treatment strategies for GGNs reducing unnecessary follow-up and radiation dose.

Fe-Intercalation Dominated Ferromagnetism of van der Waals Fe3 GeTe2

Fe3 GeTe2 have proven to be of greatly intrigue. However, the underlying mechanism behind the varying Curie temperature (Tc ) values remains a puzzle. This study explores the atomic structure of Fe3 GeTe2 crystals exhibiting Tc values of 160, 210, and 230 K. The elemental mapping reveals a Fe-intercalation on the interstitial sites within the van der Waals gap of the high-Tc (210 and 230 K) samples, which are observed to have an exchange bias effect by electrical transport measurements, while Fe intercalation or the bias effect is absent in the low-Tc (160 K) samples. First-principles calculations further suggest that the Fe-intercalation layer may be responsible for the local antiferromagnetic coupling that gives rise to the exchange bias effect, and that the interlayer exchange paths greatly contribute to the enhancement of Tc . This discovery of the Fe-intercalation layer elucidates the mechanism behind the hidden antiferromagnetic ordering that underlies the enhancement of Tc in Fe3 GeTe2 .

Design of an Ultra-Wideband Transparent Wave Absorber

In this paper, a multilayer ultra-wideband transparent metamaterial wave absorber is proposed, which has the characteristics of ultra-wideband wave absorption, light transmission and flexible bending; in addition, due to the complete symmetry of the structure, the absorber has polarization insensitivity to incident electromagnetic waves. Both simulation and experimental results show that the frequency range of the microwave absorption rate is higher than 90% between 8.7 GHz and 38.9 GHz (between which most of the absorption rate can reach more than 95%), the total bandwidth is 30.2 GHz, and the relative bandwidth is 126.9%, realizing microwave broadband absorption and covering commonly used communication frequency bands such as X-band, Ku-band, and K-band. A sample was processed and tested. The test results are in good agreement with the results of the theoretical analysis, which proves the correctness of the theoretical analysis. In addition, through the selection and oxidation of indium tin (ITO) materials, the metamaterial also has the characteristics of optical transparency and flexibility, so it has potential application value in the window radar stealth and conformal radar stealth of weapons and equipment.

[Efficacy and safety evaluation of immunotherapy combined with targeted therapy as second-line treatment in patients with metastatic non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma]

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitor combined tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy versus TKI monotherapy as the second-line regimen for patients with metastatic non-clear cell renal carcinoma (nccRCC) who failed first-line TKI therapy. Methods: The clinicopathological data of 67 patients with metastatic nccRCC who failed first-line TKI therapy between October 2011 and September 2020 were retrospectively analyzed, including 22 patients who received TKI monotherapy and 45 patients who received TKI plus PD-1 inhibitor as the second-line therapy. The efficacy was assessed according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors version 1.0/1.1 (RECIST 1.0/1.1), the Kaplan-Meier method was used to plot the survival curves, and the Log rank test was used to analyze the differences in the survival between the two groups. Treatment-related adverse events (AEs) after treatment were observed in both groups. Results: The overall objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR) were 37.3% (25/67) and 56.7% (38/67), respectively. The overall second-line progression-free survival (PFS) was 7.7 months and Overall Survival (OS) was 25.2 months. The ORR and DCR of patients in the combination therapy group were 48.9% (22/45) and 71.1% (32/45), respectively, which were significantly improved compared with the TKI monotherapy group [13.6% (3/22) and 27.3% (6/22), respectively] (P=0.007 and P=0.001, respectively). The median PFS of 9.2 months for second-line treatment was longer in patients in the combination therapy group than in the TKI monotherapy group (5.2 months, P=0.001), but the median OS was not statistically different between the two groups (28.2 months vs 20.8 months, P=0.068). Common treatment-related AEs included hypertension, diarrhea, fatigue, stomatitis, hand-foot syndrome, and hypothyroidism. The incidence of hypothyroidism was higher in the combination therapy group [40.0% (18/45)] than in the TKI monotherapy group [22.7% (5/22), P=0.044]; the incidence of other treatment-related AEs between the two groups were not statistically significant (all P>0.05). Conclusion: Immune-targeted combination therapy was more effective than TKI monotherapy alone and was well tolerated in the treatment of metastatic nccRCC patients who failed first-line TKIs.

[Establishment and validation of a novel nomogram to predict overall survival after radical nephrectomy]

Objective: To establish a nomogram prognostic model for predicting the 5-, 10-, and 15-year overall survival (OS) of non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients managed with radical nephrectomy (RN), compare the modelled results with the results of pure pathologic staging, the Karakiewicz nomogram and the Mayo Clinic Stage, Size, Grade, and Necrosis (SSIGN) score commonly used in foreign countries, and stratify the patients into different prognostic risk subgroups. Methods: A total of 1 246 non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients managed with RN in Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) from 1999 to 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to screen the variables that influence the prognosis for nomogram establishment, and the bootstrap random sampling was used for internal validation. The time-receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), the calibration curve and the clinical decision curve analysis (DCA) were applied to evaluate the nomogram. The prediction efficacy of the nomogram and that of the pure pathologic staging, the Karakiewicz nomogram and the SSIGN score was compared through the area under the curve (AUC). Finally, patients were stratified into different risk subgroups according to our nomogram scores. Results: A total of 1 246 patients managed with RN were enrolled in this study. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that age, smoking history, pathological nuclear grade, sarcomatoid differentiation, tumor necrosis and pathological T and N stages were independent prognostic factors for RN patients (all P<0.05). A nomogram model named SYSUCC based on these factors was built to predict the 5-, 10-, and 15-year survival rate of the participating patients. In the bootstrap random sampling with 1 000 iterations, all these factors occurred for more than 800 times as independent predictors. The Harrell's concordance index (C-index) of SYSUCC was higher compared with pure pathological staging [0.770 (95% CI: 0.716-0.823) vs 0.674 (95% CI: 0.621-0.728)]. The calibration curve showed that the survival rate as predicted by the SYSUCC model simulated the actual rate, while the clinical DCA showed that the SYSUCC nomogram has a benefit in certain probability ranges. In the ROC analysis that included 857 patients with detailed pathological nuclear stages, the nomogram had a larger AUC (5-/10-year AUC: 0.823/0.804) and better discriminating ability than pure pathological staging (5-/10-year AUC: 0.701/0.658), Karakiewicz nomogram (5-/10-year AUC: 0.772/0.734) and SSIGN score (5-/10-year AUC: 0.792/0.750) in predicting the 5-/10-year OS of RN patients (all P<0.05). In addition, the AUC of the SYSUCC nomogram for predicting the 15-year OS (0.820) was larger than that of the SSIGN score (0.709), and there was no statistical difference (P<0.05) between the SYSUCC nomogram, pure pathological staging (0.773) and the Karakiewicz nomogram (0.826). The calibration curve was close to the standard curve, which indicated that the model has good predictive performance. Finally, patients were stratified into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk subgroups (738, 379 and 129, respectively) according to the SYSUCC nomogram scores, among whom patients in intermediate- and high-risk subgroups had a worse OS than patients in the low-risk subgroup (intermediate-risk group vs. low-risk group: HR=4.33, 95% CI: 3.22-5.81, P<0.001; high-risk group vs low-risk group: HR=11.95, 95% CI: 8.29-17.24, P<0.001), and the high-risk subgroup had a worse OS than the intermediate-risk group (HR=2.63, 95% CI: 1.88-3.68, P<0.001). Conclusions: Age, smoking history, pathological nuclear grade, sarcomatoid differentiation, tumor necrosis and pathological stage were independent prognostic factors for non-metastasis renal cell carcinoma patients after RN. The SYSUCC nomogram based on these independent prognostic factors can better predict the 5-, 10-, and 15-year OS than pure pathological staging, the Karakiewicz nomogram and the SSIGN score of patients after RN. In addition, the SYSUCC nomogram has good discrimination, agreement, risk stratification and clinical application potential.

Baseline whole-lung CT features deriving from deep learning and radiomics: prediction of benign and malignant pulmonary ground-glass nodules

Objective

To develop and validate the model for predicting benign and malignant ground-glass nodules (GGNs) based on the whole-lung baseline CT features deriving from deep learning and radiomics.

Methods

This retrospective study included 385 GGNs from 3 hospitals, confirmed by pathology. We used 239 GGNs from Hospital 1 as the training and internal validation set; 115 and 31 GGNs from Hospital 2 and Hospital 3 as the external test sets 1 and 2, respectively. An additional 32 stable GGNs from Hospital 3 with more than five years of follow-up were used as the external test set 3. We evaluated clinical and morphological features of GGNs at baseline chest CT and extracted the whole-lung radiomics features simultaneously. Besides, baseline whole-lung CT image features are further assisted and extracted using the convolutional neural network. We used the back-propagation neural network to construct five prediction models based on different collocations of the features used for training. The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) was used to compare the prediction performance among the five models. The Delong test was used to compare the differences in AUC between models pairwise.

Results

The model integrated clinical-morphological features, whole-lung radiomic features, and whole-lung image features (CMRI) performed best among the five models, and achieved the highest AUC in the internal validation set, external test set 1, and external test set 2, which were 0.886 (95% CI: 0.841-0.921), 0.830 (95%CI: 0.749-0.893) and 0.879 (95%CI: 0.712-0.968), respectively. In the above three sets, the differences in AUC between the CMRI model and other models were significant (all P < 0.05). Moreover, the accuracy of the CMRI model in the external test set 3 was 96.88%.

Conclusion

The baseline whole-lung CT features were feasible to predict the benign and malignant of GGNs, which is helpful for more refined management of GGNs.

Grafting zwitterionic brushes from the surface of an epoxy-based transparent hydrogel for antifouling performance

Non-specific biofilm formation (biofouling) commonly occurs to the surface of biomedical devices, which causes infection to the human tissues and function loss after implantation. To enhance the antifouling properties on the bioinert hydrogel-based biomaterials, a novel surface grafting approach was developed using surface radical chain-transfer reaction mediated by DL-dithiothreitol (DTT), rather than catalyzed by cytotoxic metal ions. Zwitterionic poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) brushes were grafted on the surface of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PHG) to obtain PHG-graft-PMPC (PHG-g-PMPC) hydrogel, which were shown to have tunable surface hydrophilicity while maintaining high water content and transparency. Elemental composition analysis and micromorphology demonstrated the success of surface grafting. Protein adhesion assays were carried out, showing the reduction of bovine serum albumin, lactoferrin, and lysozyme adhesion by ~ 90%, 80%, and 70%, respectively, compared to the pristine hydrogel. Significant resistance of bacterial attachment was observed on surface-modified hydrogel using gram-negative Escherichia coli and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. The PHG-g-PMPC hydrogel are potentially feasible in various biomedical applications, especially for preventing surface biofouling of ophthalmic implants and devices. Furthermore, this de novo approach provides a universal platform for surface functionalization via thiol-epoxy click chemistry and surface radical chain-transfer reaction.

Blocking Pannexin-1 Channels Alleviates Thalamic Hemorrhage-Induced Pain and Inflammatory Depolarization of Microglia in Mice

Central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is a neuropathic pain syndrome that frequently occurs following cerebral stroke. The pathogenesis of CPSP is mainly due to thalamic injury caused by ischemia and hemorrhage. However, its underlying mechanism is far from clear. In the present study, a thalamic hemorrhage (TH) model was established in young male mice by microinjection of 0.075 U of type IV collagenase into the unilateral ventral posterior lateral nucleus and ventral posterior medial nucleus of the thalamus. We found that TH led to microglial pannexin (Panx)-1, a large-pore ion channel, opening within the thalamus accompanied with thalamic tissue injury, pain sensitivities, and neurological deficit, which were significantly prevented by either intraperitoneal injection of the Panx1 blocker carbenoxolone or intracerebroventricular perfusion of the inhibitory mimetic peptide 10Panx. However, inhibition of Panx1 has no additive effect on pain sensitivities upon pharmacological depletion of microglia. Mechanistically, we found that carbenoxolone alleviated TH-induced proinflammatory factors transcription, neuronal apoptosis, and neurite disassembly within the thalamus. In summary, we conclude that blocking of microglial Panx1 channels alleviates CPSP and neurological deficit through, at least in part, reducing neural damage mediated by the inflammatory response of thalamic microglia after TH.
