Abstract
Microbial transformation is extensively utilized to generate new metabolites in bulk amounts with more specificity and improved activity. As cinnamic acid was reported to exhibit several important pharmacological properties, microbial transformation was used to obtain its new derivatives with enhanced biological activities. By manipulating the 2-stage fermentation protocol of biotransformation, five metabolites were produced from cinnamic acid. Two of them were new derivatives; N-propyl cinnamamide 2̲ and 2-methyl heptyl benzoate 3̲ produced by Alternaria alternata. The other 3 metabolites, p-hydroxy benzoic acid 4̲, cinnamyl alcohol 5̲ and methyl cinnamate 6̲, were produced by Rhodotorula rubra, Rhizopus species and Penicillium chrysogeneum, respectively. Cinnamic acid and its metabolites were evaluated for their cyclooxygenase (COX) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities. Protection against H2O2 and Aβ1-42 induced-neurotoxicity in human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells was also monitored. Metabolite 4̲ was more potent as a COX-2 inhibitor than the parent compound with an IC50 value of 1.85 ± 0.07 μM. Out of the tested compounds, only metabolite 2̲ showed AChE inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 8.27 μM. These results were further correlated with an in silico study of the binding interactions of the active metabolites with the active sites of the studied enzymes. Metabolite 3̲ was more potent as a neuroprotective agent against H2O2 and Aβ1-42 induced-neurotoxicity than catechin and epigallocatechin-3-gallate as positive controls. This study suggested the two new metabolites 2̲ and 3̲ along with metabolite 4̲ as potential leads for neurodegenerative diseases associated with cholinergic deficiency, neurotoxicity or neuroinflammation.

Abstract
CONTEXT Date palm waste is an agricultural waste that accumulates in massive amounts causing serious pollution and environmental problems. OBJECTIVES Date palm trees, Phoenix dactylifera Linn CV 'Zaghloul' (Arecaceae) grown in Egypt, leave behind waste products that were investigated to produce compounds with anti-Helicobacter pylori and anti-inflammatory activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chromatographic workup of P. dactylifera aqueous methanol extract derived from fibrous mesh and fruit bunch (without fruit) afforded a new sesquiterpene lactone derivative, phodactolide A (1), along with ten known compounds (2-11), primarily identified as polyphenols. Chemical structures were unambiguously elucidated based on mass and 1D/2D NMR spectroscopy. All isolated compounds were assessed for their activities against H. pylori using broth micro-well dilution method and clarithromycin as a positive control. The anti-inflammatory response of isolated compounds was evaluated by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme using TMPD Assay followed by an in silico study to validate their mechanism of action using celecoxib as a standard drug. RESULTS Compounds 4, 6 and 8-10 exhibited potent anti-H. pylori activity with MIC values ranging from 0.48 to 1.95 µg/mL that were comparable to or more potent than clarithromycin. For COX-2 inhibitory assay, 4, 7 and 8 revealed promising activities with IC50 values of 1.04, 0.65 and 0.45 μg/mL, respectively. These results were verified by molecular docking studies, where 4, 7 and 8 showed the best interactions with key amino acid residues of COX-2 active site. CONCLUSION The present study characterizes a new sesquiterpene lactone and recommends 4 and 8 for future in vivo studies as plausible anti-ulcer remedies.

Abstract
The absolute full energy peak efficiency values have been obtained by Monte Carlo MCNP5 code and semi-empirical ANGLE3 calibration software for a coaxial HPGe detector. The two calibration methods were combined to build a hybrid MCNP5/ANGLE3 model. The hybrid model can give efficiency calibrations values for various gamma-ray source shapes and geometries and then generate efficiency calibrations for new geometries instantly without needing new standards. The model has been checked experimentally and theoretically and then approved to cover the various gamma detection measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is one of the most common causes of neonatal respiratory distress (RD). However, distinguishing TTN from other causes of RD may be difficult during the first 12:24 h after birth. Lung ultrasonography (LUS) has been successfully utilized in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of neonatal RD. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of LUS for early diagnosis of TTN as well as differentiate it from other causes of neonatal RD in near and full term Egyptian neonates. METHODS LUS was performed in 65 near and full term neonates presented with RD within the first 12:24 hours of admission in NICU of Suez Canal University, Ismailia, Egypt. RESULTS Among the 65 neonates included in the study, 73.8% were diagnosed to have TTN, 18.5% were diagnosed to have pneumonia, 4.6% had meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) and 3.1% had respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The Double lung point has 69.6% sensitivity, 100% specificity, 100% PPV and 39.1% NPV for detecting TTN. We have novel data showing a positive correlation between the degree of alveolar-interstitial syndrome (AIS) and the type of oxygen support offered to neonates diagnosed with TTN. CONCLUSION We found LUS to be a reliable and non-invasive tool for the early diagnosis of TTN and its differentiation from other causes of neonatal RD in near and full term Egyptian neonates.

Abstract
Phytochemical examination of corncob extracts led to the isolation of a new lignan identified as 7,7'-dihydroxy-3'-O-demethyl-4-methoxymatairesinol, together with seven known compounds, identified as β-sitosterol, β-sitosteryl-β-d-glucoside, 6β-hydroxy-campest-4-en-3-one, 5α,8α-epidioxyergosta-6,22-dien-3β-ol, tricin, kaempferol and p-coumaric acid. The isolated compounds were identified by one and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Of the twenty microorganisms screened for metabolism of goniothalamin only Streptomyces aurofaciens ATCC 10762 and Nocardia species NRRL 5646 produced two metabolites, 3,4-dihydrogoniothalamin and 3,4,7,8 tetrahydrogoniothalamin. The identity of the isolated metabolites were established using TLC, HPLC, MS, IR, and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the substrate had been transformed into two unknown metabolites by Aspergillus niger ATCC 11394 and Septomyxa affinis ATCC 6737 in low yield. Three of the metabolites were also detected and identified in the urine and blood samples of the goniothalamin-treated Sprague-Dawley rats. The obtained results are in agreement with and support the principle of microbial models of mammalian metabolism.

Abstract
Fifteen children, 6-14 years old, who were heavily exposed to pigeon droppings, presented with cough, chills and breathlessnes on mild exertion. Twelve gave immediate positive skin test reactions to pigeon droppings. Ten of the fifteen also gave a late (Arthus) reaction, and seven gave a positive delayed reaction which was maximal at 24--72 hr. Nine children had precipitins against avian droppings. In ten patients who were tested for lymphocyte transformation, five gave positive responses to both serum and pigeon droppings. Radiological findings of the chest showed parenchymatous infiltrations and diffuse interstitial reticulations, suggestive of extrinsic allergic alveolitis. In a control group of fifteen heavily-exposed children who had no symptoms, immediate and late skin reactions occurred respectively in five and two. One only had a positive precipitin test, and one of five tested had a positive lymphoblastic transformation. In a non-exposed comparable group of children, all tests were negative except for one immediate positive skin response. Children heavily exposed to the inhalation of avian antigens can develop extrinsic allergic bronchiolo-alveolitis.
