Chitosan/tannic acid/ZnFe layered double hydroxides and mixed metal oxides nanocomposite for the adsorption of reactive dyes

The fabrication of the environmentally friendly nanocomposite beads containing chitosan (Chi), tannic acid (TA), layered double hydroxides (LDH), and mixed metal oxides (MMO) was carried out. The synthesized ZnFe LDH, ZnFe MMO, and fabricated beads (Chi/TA@LDH and Chi/TA@MMO) were characterized using FESEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and TGA. The beads were applied for the simultaneous removal of three reactive dyes. The design of experiments was based on a full factorial design considering the effect of six independent variables (initial dye concentrations, adsorbent dosage, time, and adsorbent type) on the dye removal percentages (DR%) of each dye. Regression equations were extracted from the experimental results (R² > 0.983) and high obtained F-values from analysis of variance (ANOVA) proved the significance of the models. The maximum adsorption capacity of the dyes onto, Chi/TA@LDH and Chi/TA@MMO beads were between 257 and 483 mg g^-1. The spontaneity and exothermic nature of the adsorption processes were determined by thermodynamic studies (-8 < ΔH° (KJ mol^-1) < -1, -22 < ΔG° (KJ mol^-1) < -18). Reusability studies showed that the fabricated beads could be regenerated and applied several times.

Comparative study for removal of cationic and anionic dyes using alginate-based hydrogels filled with citric acid-sawdust/UiO-66-NH2 hybrid

Nowadays, a big challenge is developing a sustainable and effective method for removing contaminants like dyes from aqueous solutions. In this regard, Zr-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH₂) and sawdust as the ideal adsorbents were used. Due to their low separation in adsorption processes, embedding into alginate and obtaining composite beads are suggested as a suitable strategy. The achieved Ca-alginate/citric acid (CA)-sawdust/UiO-66-NH₂ hydrogel beads were used to compare cationic and anionic dyes removal. This sorbent indicated an excellent selectivity for removing methylene blue versus methyl orange in a binary system. pH = 6, adsorbent amount = 80 mg, methylene blue concentration = 10 mg/L, and contact time = 420 min were achieved as optimal parameters on methylene blue adsorption with an adsorption capacity of about 26 mg/g. The removal process of methylene blue followed linear Freundlich isotherm and nonlinear pseudo-2nd-order kinetic models. The regeneration test demonstrated methylene blue removal efficiency higher than about 89 % after 9 cycles. According to the outcomes, methylene blue could be attached to the adsorbent surface through the electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions of the aromatic rings. These results confirm the potential of Ca-alginate/CA-sawdust/UiO-66-NH₂ hydrogel beads as a selective bio-sorbent for cationic dye removal.

Amino-functionalized cross-linked cellulosic fabric with antibacterial, UV protection, and coloring effects using folic acid

The amino-functionalized cellulose with folic acid, via an esterification reaction between carboxylic acid of folic acid and hydroxyl groups of cellulose, can develop multifunctional products with new chemical and physical properties. Folic acid contains two carboxylic groups as well as an amine group that can be used as a coupling agent and provide suitable conditions for coupling hydroxyl-based compounds to cellulose. Also; the multi-functionalized cellulose with folic acid has no effects on the physical and mechanical properties and also has benefits such as antibacterial, UV protection, and wrinkle resistance. The FTIR-ATR and Raman analysis confirmed the amino functionalized-cellulosic fabric via an esterification reaction between cellulose and folic acid. The cell viability of L929 fibroblast (NCBI C161) and MCF-7 (NCBI C135) cancer cells indicated more effectiveness on MCF-7 cancer cells. Therefore; folic acid can be used as a biocompatible natural cross-linker to modify cellulose fabrics for apparel and medical applications.

Fabrication of air filters with advanced filtration performance for removal of viral aerosols and control the spread of COVID-19

COVID-19 is caused via the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a lipid-based enveloped virus with spike-like projections. At present, the global epidemic of COVID-19 continues and waves of SARS-CoV-2, the mutant Delta and Omicron variant which are associated with enhanced transmissibility and evasion to vaccine-induced immunity have increased hospitalization and mortality, the biggest challenge we face is whether we will be able to overcome this virus? On the other side, warm seasons and heat have increased the need for proper ventilation systems to trap contaminants containing the virus. Besides, heat and sweating accelerate the growth of microorganisms. For example, medical staff that is in the front line use masks for a long time, and their facial sweat causes microbes to grow on the mask. Nowadays, efficient air filters with anti-viral and antimicrobial properties have received a lot of attention, and are used to make ventilation systems or medical masks. A wide range of materials plays an important role in the production of efficient air filters. For example, metals, metal oxides, or antimicrobial metal species that have anti-viral and antimicrobial properties, including Ag, ZnO, TiO₂, CuO, and Cu played a role in this regard. Carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, or derivatives have also shown their role well. In addition, natural materials such as biopolymers such as alginate, and herbal extracts are employed to prepare effective air filters. In this review, we summarized the utilization of diverse materials in the preparation of efficient air filters to apply in the preparation of medical masks and ventilation systems. In the first part, the employing metal and metal oxides is examined, and the second part summarizes the application of carbon materials for the fabrication of air filters. After examination of the performance of natural materials, challenges and progress visions are discussed.

Optimization of chitosan/tannic acid@ ZnFe layered double hydroxide bionanocomposite film for removal of reactive blue 4 using a response surface methodology

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are great adsorbents for anionic pollutants, but are in a powder form that leads to challenges in solid-liquid separation, low hydraulic conductivity, and handling. Herein, novel bionanocomposite films containing chitosan (Cs), tannic acid (TA), and LDH were fabricated and applied for the removal of reactive blue 4 (RB4). A response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design was applied to study the effect of operating parameters (TA%: 0-20, LDH%: 0-20, pH: 5-9, adsorbent dosage: 0.5-1.5 g L^-1, time: 30-90 min) on RB4 dye removal (DR%). A quadratic regression equation was successfully developed to predict the response (R²: 0.95). The obtained optimized condition was TA%: 10, LDH%: 20, pH: 5, adsorbent dosage: 1.5 g L^-1, and time: 71 min that resulted in DR%: 98.2. The best-fitted adsorption isotherm and kinetic models were linear Langmuir and nonlinear pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The maximum capacity of adsorption for the optimized film was 406 mg g^-1. The obtained thermodynamic parameters implied that the process of adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous. The reusability studies showed that the DR% was decreased from 93% for the first cycle to 69%, 57%, and 56% for the second, third and fourth cycle, respectively.

Removal of the Anionic Dye Congo Red from an Aqueous Solution Using a Crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol)-ZnO-Vitamin M Nanocomposite Film: A Study of the Recent Concerns about Nonlinear and Linear Forms of Isotherms and Kinetics

This paper deals with the preparation, characterization, and application of a crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol)/ZnO-vitamin M (PVA/ZnO-VM) nanocomposite film for the removal of Congo red (CR) from an aqueous solution. The characterization of a crosslinked PVA/ZnO-VM nanocomposite film showed that the structure became more regular and also the surface morphology appeared smooth in comparison with pure PVA. The obtained data from Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) proved the mesoporous structure for this nanocomposite film. Several effective factors were examined for the adsorption ability of the nanocomposite film, including solution pH (2-10), sorbent amount (0.02-0.08 g), contact time (3-240 min), initial concentration of the adsorbate (30-300 mg·L^-1), and temperature (318-358 K). The optimal conditions are as follows: pH = 10, adsorbent amount = 0.06 g, and C₀ = 200 mg·L^-1. The removal efficiency of the nanocomposite film was 92% after 4 h at the ambient temperature. To interpret the adsorption process, nonlinear and linear forms of kinetic and isotherm models were considered. The obtained data followed nonlinear pseudo-second-order and linear Langmuir isotherm models, which indicated the monolayer formation of CR over the crosslinked PVA/ZnO-VM nanocomposite film with the maximum adsorption capacity of about 56.49 mg·g^-1. Also, the adsorption process of CR by the crosslinked PVA/ZnO-VM nanocomposite film is a spontaneous and exothermic reaction.

The main reasons for PVA's increased interest in 3D/4D printing technologies are suitable flowability, stimuli-responsivity, extrudability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, and other features. This review aims to introduce the 3D/4D printing technologies' knowledge and then the applications of PVA as a feed in these novel technologies.

Recent advancements in synthesis and drug delivery utilization of polysaccharides-based nanocomposites: The important role of nanoparticles and layered double hydroxides

Drug delivery systems are explained as methods to deliver a specific drug to desired organs, tissues, and cells for drug release to diseases treatment. Recently, considerable development has been interested in stimuli-responsive nano-systems, which respond to the essential pathological and physicochemical issues in diseased sites. On the other side, nanoparticles including metals (Au, Ag), metal oxides (Fe₃O₄, ZnO, CuO), or non-metal oxides (SiO₂) and also, layered double hydroxides nanostructures have appealed significant consideration in the fields of biomedical therapeutics and cancer therapy owing to the bio-compatibility, great surface area, good chemical and mechanical features, and also proper magnetic characteristics. This comprehensive review provides an overview of current advancements in drug delivery strategies, and manufacturing methods using chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, gums, and also, metals, metal oxides, non-metal oxides, and LDHs for delivery system uses.

Tragacanth gum mediated green fabrication of mesoporous titania nanomaterials: Application in photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet

Water remediation is a crucial subject in present century. Hence, several processes have been used for this aim, which the photodegradation method with high activity, cost-effectiveness, and durability has been remarkable. In this project, the various novel mesoporous Titania nanomaterials (MTN) were green synthesized using Tragacanth gum as coupling agent. The effect of calcination times on the crystalline structure of the resulted MTNs was examined. MTNs displayed the dramatically specific surface area with negative surface charge and nano-sheet structure, and they applied for photodegradation of crystal violet under ultraviolet irradiation due to proper band gaps energy. The obtained MTN in 8 h calcination time (MTN-8) showed the best photoreduction activity. Also, the superoxide radicals, electrons, and hole pairs represented the main degradation agents as the reduction rate of crystal violet. Next, the transformation pathways were proposed, which could be transformation singlet oxygen addition, hydroxyl addition, and N-demethylation reactions.

Recent breakthroughs of antibacterial and antiviral protective polymeric materials during COVID-19 pandemic and after pandemic: Coating, packaging, and textile applications

The global epidemic owing to COVID-19 has generated awareness to ensuring best practices for avoiding the microorganism spread. Indeed, because of the increase in infections caused by bacteria and viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the global demand for antimicrobial materials is growing. New technologies by using polymeric systems are of great interest. Virus transmission by contaminated surfaces leads to the spread of infectious diseases, so antimicrobial coatings are significant in this regard. Moreover, antimicrobial food packaging is beneficial to prevent the spread of microorganisms during food processing and transportation. Furthermore, antimicrobial textiles show an effective role. We aim to provide a review of prepared antimicrobial polymeric materials for use in coating, food packaging, and textile during the COVID-19 pandemic and after pandemic.

Recent advancements in 3D bioprinting technology of carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogels: Utilization in tissue engineering

3D printing technology has grown exponentially since its introduction due to its ability to print complex structures quickly and simply. The ink used in 3D printers is one of the most discussed areas and a variety of hydrogel-based inks were developed. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is derived from cellulose, which is a natural, biocompatible, biodegradable, and wildly abounded biopolymer. CMC is a very qualified candidate in the preparation of hydrogels because it has good solubility in water with multiple carboxyl groups. Various physical and chemical cross-linking methods and mechanisms have been used by researchers to prepare CMC-based hydrogels. Bioprinting is a powerful technology for tissue engineering applications that have been able to design and simulate different tissue and organs with digital control. Among many advantages, which were reported for bioprinting, its high throughput, as well as precise control of scaffolding and cells, is very valuable. Considering all these tips and capabilities, in this study, the methods of preparation and improvement of CMC-based hydrogels, applied 3D printer, and the latest inks designed using this biopolymer in terms of combination, features, and performance in tissue engineering are reported.

Chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, gums, and β-glucan as potent adjuvants and vaccine delivery systems for viral threats including SARS-CoV-2: A review

Pathogen transmission is a widespread threat to global human health. Vaccines are very important during the outbreak of a pandemic. Destructive fractures caused by a sudden outbreak of COVID-19 have spurred vaccine production at an unprecedented rate. The strategy of an effective vaccine delivery system is opening up novel probabilities to make more immunization. Indeed, vaccination is the most successful way to prevent deaths from infectious diseases. In order to optimal immune response production or improvement in the effectiveness of vaccines, delivery systems or adjuvants are required. Natural polymers such as chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, gums, and β-glucan with antiviral activity have good potential as adjuvant or delivery systems for vaccine formulation development and design vaccine delivery devices. According to the antiviral performance and immunomodulation of these biopolymers, they will play significant characters in the anti-COVID-19 field. In this mini-review, the recent progress in vaccine development by using biopolymers is presented which, provides a reference for their research on anti-COVID-19 drugs and vaccines.

Adsorption of Methyl Orange from Aqueous Solution Using PVOH Composite Films Cross-Linked by Glutaraldehyde and Reinforced with Modified α-MnO2

A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) composite cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (GL) containing α-MnO₂ modified with stearic acid (ST) was fabricated as an efficient sorbent for capturing methyl orange (MO) dye from the water system. We investigated the factors affecting MO adsorption in detail. The adsorption process showed a high dependence on the pH value. The highest removal efficiency (96.5%) was obtained at pH 2. The adsorption isotherm study indicated that the linear Freundlich isotherm was a more appropriate model for the adsorption process. The adsorption kinetics study revealed that the adsorption data matched with a nonlinear pseudo-first-order model. Physical adsorption interactions, including electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, and dipole-dipole forces, play dominant roles in this process. Thermodynamic investigations confirmed that MO adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic with physical interactions. The outcomes demonstrated that the cross-linked PVOH-GL/α-MnO₂-ST composite could be a hopeful sorbent for the efficient uptake of MO molecules from polluted waters.

Methylene blue contaminated water sanitization with alginate/compact discs waste-derived activated carbon composite beads: Adsorption studies

The adsorption behavior of different adsorbents has been studied by various research works. But few studies have compared linear and non-linear isotherm and kinetic models alongside phenomenological coefficients. Here, the effect of activated carbon black (ACB) on the methylene blue adsorption behavior of alginate was examined. A low-cost and green adsorbent was fabricated to can easily be detached from water. For this aim waste compact discs were recycled for the preparation of ACB. Loading of 15 wt% ACB related to pure alginate increased removal yield of alginate significantly. Isotherms and kinetic models in linear and non-linear forms were studied and the results were examined by comparing R² along with different error function values to find the best fitting. The results were well matched with non-linear pseudo-second-order and linear Langmuir. Intraparticle diffusion model and phenomenological coefficients represented control of adsorption by film diffusion and its limiting by pore diffusion.

Sustainable plant and microbes-mediated preparation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and industrial application of its chitosan, starch, cellulose, and dextrin-based nanocomposites as catalysts

Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ NPs) attracted significant scientific interest, considering their immense diversity of usage and biocompatibility. Perceiving the growing importance of sustainable chemistry, many efforts have been made to prepare these NPs using naturally occurring materials mostly plant extracts and microbes. Magnetic NPs (MNPs) are commonly used as composites and are considered in two matters: synthesis and modification of their functional groups. Biopolymeric nanocomposites are a group of hybrid materials composed of natural polymers and inorganic nanomaterials. Biopolymers such as alginate, cellulose, starch, gelatin, chitosan, etc. have been considered extensively and provided composites with better electrical and mechanical thermal properties. Fe₃O₄ NPs incorporated in a polymer and biopolymer matrix is a good instance of the functional nanostructure, which has been able to enhance the properties of both ingredients. These hybrids can have impressive applications in various scopes such as magneto-optical storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, catalyst, water remediation, biomedical sensing, and so on. In this study, we have tried to briefly introduce Fe₃O₄ NPs, investigate the green and sustainable methods that have been suggested for its synthesis and review recent utilization of their biopolymeric nanocomposite (NC) including starch, chitosan, dextrin, etc. as catalysts and photocatalysts.

Hydroxyapatite mineralization of chitosan-tragacanth blend/ZnO/Ag nanocomposite films with enhanced antibacterial activity

Biocompatible nanocomposites (NCs) with antibacterial activity containing organic matrix and inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are vital for providing a suitable substrate for hydroxyapatite (HA) formation. Therefore, we fabricated a series of biocompatible NCs of chitosan (CS) and tragacanth gum (TG) and different percentages of ZnO NPs and ZnO@Ag NPs as fillers into the CS-TG blend. The characteristics of the NCs were distinguished with the field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-Ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CS-TG/ZnO@Ag(1:0.500) NC 8 wt% showed a rough surface according to FE-SEM. Moreover, the TEM image of CS-TG/ZnO NC 8 wt% depicted a uniform dispersion of NPs into the matrix. The biocompatibility of these NCs was evaluated by the formation of HA on their surfaces. The outcomes depicted the deposition of HA on the surface of all NCs. Also, CS-TG/ZnO@Ag(1:0.500) NC 8 wt% exhibited the most HA deposition on its surface. The antibacterial activity of these NCs toward Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria was evaluated. The CS-TG/ZnO@Ag(1:0.500) NC 8 wt% exhibited a higher inhibition zone diameter in comparison to the ZnO@Ag (1:0.500) NPs for the S. aureus bacteria. Generally, antibacterial activity of the NCs containing ZnO@Ag NPs are more than NCs containing ZnO NPs.

Green and plant-based adsorbent from tragacanth gum and carboxyl-functionalized carbon nanotube hydrogel bionanocomposite for the super removal of methylene blue dye

This study aims to prepare a hydrogel bionanocomposite (HBNC) as an efficient adsorbent and introduce it as a suitable replacement for petroleum-based adsorbents. Thus, tragacanth gum (TG), and carboxyl-functionalized carbon nanotube (CFCNT) were used as raw materials. HBNCs were prepared with the aid of ultrasonication, and different methods were employed to characterize them. The surface structures of the HBNCs were altered after the addition CFCNT into TG and exposure to ultrasound, as well. Transmission electron microscopy images showed CFCNTs were well dispersed in TG. Then, the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) was performed using these HBNCs. The removal efficiency was over 80% at optimized conditions. Nonlinear and linear forms of Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Sips, and Redlich-Peterson (R-P) were applied to find the proper arrangement of MB onto the adsorbent. Using statistical equations, it was revealed that the process obeyed the linear R-P model, indicating a mixture of mono- and multilayer adsorption (but mostly monolayer). Also, pseudo-second-order was the appropriate kinetic model and suggested chemical adsorption. According to the thermodynamic calculations, this process was exothermic and spontaneous, and the type of interactions between HBNC and MB was physicochemical. Also, the diffusion study indicated that film diffusion is the primary mechanism.

Applications of Selectfluor for the oxidation of Sulfides, urazoles and alcohols under the solvent-free conditions

Selectfluor acts as a safe and efficient reagent for the oxidation of urazoles, alcohols and also sulfides via releasing the electrophile F under the solvent-free conditions. In room temperature, this reagent cannot oxidize the substrates alone and requires KBr as the catalyst. In the proposed mechanism, Selectfluor converts the Br- to the Br-F and the lone-pair electron of substrates attack to Br-F to perform the oxidation reaction. This procedure offers some advantages; for example short reaction time, simple work-up, good yield and matching with some green chemistry approaches.

Recent innovations in functionalized layered double hydroxides: Fabrication, characterization, and industrial applications

Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) are a group of hydrotalcite-like nano-sized materials with cationic layers and exchangeable interlayer anions. The wide range of divalent and trivalent cationic metals and anionic compounds are employed in the synthesis of LDH materials, which have improved their importance among the researchers. Because of their high anion exchange property, memory effect, tunable behavior, bio-friendly, simple preparation, and their affordability, these nano-materials are essentially interested today. Modification of LDHs improves their behaviours to make them appropriate in industrial fields, including biological, adsorbent, mechanical, optical, thermal, electrical fields, etc. This review has critically discussed the structural features, main properties, and also clarified the most important methods of modification and intercalation of LDH nano-materials. Moreover, some novel reported researches related to the successful modification of LDH materials have been characterized and briefly the advantages, disadvantages, and applications are presented in the industrial fields.

A green strategy toward the preparation of poly(vinyl chloride) nanocomposites reinforced with MnO2@layered double hydroxide nanohybrids as efficient UV shielding materials

Linear and nonlinear behavior of crosslinked chitosan/N-doped graphene quantum dot nanocomposite films in cadmium cation uptake

In this research, crosslinked nanocomposite (NC) films involving chitosan (CS) and various percentages of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dot (NGQD) were prepared via ultrasonic acoustic accompanied by adding glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent (henceforth nominated as CCS/NGQD NC). The objective of this study is the design of a safe adsorbent of CCS/NGQD NC under easy and low-cost conditions to investigate the mechanisms of Cd(II) ion sorption and find an appropriate model for the kinetics of removal. By comparing adsorption ability of CCS/NGQD NC films 2, 5 and 8 wt% under the same conditions, the CCS NC film with 5 wt% of NGQD was selected as the best mass ratio to investigate the adsorption process. To understand the nature of the sorption behavior, the experimental data were used to calculate pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion kinetic models, and various isotherm models in linear and nonlinear regression. In addition, some error functions were applied to detect, either linear or nonlinear model is suitable to examine the experimental data and prevent any huge mistakes. The linear Freundlich equation well describes the uptake of Cd(II) ion by CCS film and CCS/NGQD NC film 5 wt%. Based on linear Langmuir, the maximum adsorption capacities of CCS film and CCS/NGQD NC film 5 wt% were 34.46 and 35.00 mg·g^-1, respectively. Kinetic analysis indicates that the mechanism of removal is described by nonlinear pseudo-second order model for CCS film and linear pseudo-second order model for the CCS/NGQD NC film 5 wt%. Also, thermodynamic parameters were analyzed in different temperatures. The obtained thermodynamic values prove that Cd(II) ion adsorption on both adsorbents is feasible, spontaneous and endothermic.

Sulfate catalysed multicomponent cyclisation reaction of aryl isocyanates under green conditions

Sulfate anion, as a novel anionic catalyst, promotes the multicomponent cyclisation of aryl isocyantes to give heterocyclic symmetrical isocyanurates selectively under solvent-free conditions. The use of phase transfer catalysts reduces reaction times by 4-16 times.
