Abstract
To study the changes of motor and cognitive function of pituitary tumor rats after the operation. Methods: The experiment was divided into three groups: control group, model group and operation group (30 animals for each group). Female Fischer344 rats were selected. Model group rats were subcutaneously embedded with 10 mg estrogen sustained-release pump to induce a pituitary tumor model, and control group rats were subcutaneously embedded with a normal saline sustained-release pump as control. The operation group was successfully treated by microsurgery after the model was established. The quantitative expressions of PTTG, FGF-2 and VEGF were detected by Western blot. Morris test was used to detect the spatial learning and memory ability of rats. Western blot results showed that compared with the model group, the expression of the operation group was decreased, but still higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). The water maze test results showed that the incubation period of searching the safe island in the model group was significantly longer than that in the control group on the 8th and 9th day after the injury, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The incubation period of searching the safe island on the 8th and 9th day after injury in the operation group was significantly shorter than that in the control group. Through the detection of behavioral-related experimental and protein, the motor memory of rats after pituitary tumor surgery can be improved to some extent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The expression of brain cytoplasmic RNA1 (BCYRN1) is linked to the clinicopathology and prognosis of several types of cancers, among which hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequent types of cancer worldwide.
AIM To explore the prognostic value and immunotherapeutic potential of BCYRN1 in HCC by bioinformatics and meta-analysis.
METHODS Information was obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas database. First, the correlation between BCYRN1 expression and prognosis and clinicopathologic characteristics of HCC patients was explored. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were employed to examine the relationship between BCYRN1 and HCC prognosis. Secondly, potential functions and pathways were explored by means of enrichment analysis of differentially-expressed genes. The relationships between BCYRN1 expression and tumor microenvironment, immune cell infiltration, immune checkpoint, drug sensitivity and immunotherapy effect were also investigated. Finally, three major databases were searched and used to conduct a meta-analysis on the relationship between BCYRN1 expression and patient prognosis.
RESULTS BCYRN1 expression was significantly higher in HCC compared to normal tissues and was linked to a poor prognosis and clinicopathological characteristics. Enrichment analysis showed that BCYRN1 regulates the extracellular matrix and transmission of signaling molecules, participates in the metabolism of nutrients, such as proteins, and participates in tumor-related pathways. BCYRN1 expression was linked to the tumor microenvironment, immune cell infiltration, drug sensitivity and the efficacy of immunotherapy. Furthermore, the meta-analysis in this study showed that BCYRN1 overexpression was related to a worse outcome in HCC patients.
CONCLUSION Overexpression of BCYRN1 relates to poor prognosis and may be a potential prognostic factor and immunotherapeutic target in HCC.

Abstract
The H9N2 subtype avian influenza virus can infect both chickens and humans. Previous studies have reported a role for erythrocytes in immunity. However, the role of H9N2 against chicken erythrocytes and the presence of complement-related genes in erythrocytes has not been studied. This research investigated the effect of H9N2 on complement-associated gene expression in chicken erythrocytes. The expression of complement-associated genes (C1s, C1q, C2, C3, C3ar1, C4, C4a, C5, C5ar1, C7, CD93 and CFD) was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to analyse the differential expression of complement-associated genes in chicken erythrocytes at 0 h, 2 h, 6 h and 10 h after the interaction between H9N2 virus and chicken erythrocytes in vitro and 3, 7 and 14 d after H9N2 virus nasal infection of chicks. Expression levels of C1q, C4, C1s, C2, C3, C5, C7 and CD93 were significantly up-regulated at 2 h and significantly down-regulated at 10 h. Gene expression levels of C1q, C3ar1, C4a, CFD and C5ar1 were seen to be different at each time point. The expression levels of C1q, C4, C1s, C2, C3, C5, C7, CFD, C3ar1, C4a and C5ar1 were significantly up-regulated at 7 d and the gene expression of levels of C3, CD93 and C5ar1 were seen to be different at each time point. The results confirmed that all the complement-associated genes were expressed in chicken erythrocytes and showed the H9N2 virus interaction with chicken erythrocytes and subsequent regulation of chicken erythrocyte complement-associated genes expression. This study reported, for the first time, the relationship between H9N2 and complement system of chicken erythrocytes, which will provide a foundation for further research into the prevention and control of H9N2 infection.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the characteristics and current situation of high risks related to cardiovascular disease among residents aged 35-75 in Beijing and to provide scientific reference for the formulation and improvement of cardiovascular disease prevention and control strategies and measures. Methods: According to the data of the Cardiovascular Disease Screening and Management Program in Beijing, 93 520 participants aged 35-75 in 8 districts of Beijing were selected for analysis. We used the χ2 test to compare the high-risk prevalence of cardiovascular disease in different population characteristics. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between population characteristics and the high risks of cardiovascular disease. Results: The prevalence of high-risk cardiovascular disease was 20.82% (19 471/93 520). The prevalence of high-risk population in the 65-75 years-old was significantly higher than those of other age groups [29.05% (5 151/17 733), χ2=3 359.37, P<0.001], and the prevalence increased with age (trend χ2=3 121.75, P<0.05). The prevalence of high risk in males was significantly higher than that of women (31.19%, 10 752/34 476 vs. 14.77%, 8 719/59 044, χ2=3 559.87, P<0.05). The most common clustered risk factors appeared as hypertension and diabetes (29.80%, 5 802/19 471), hypertension with smoking (37.84%, 4 069/10 752) in males, and hypertension with diabetes mellitus in females (49.32%, 4 300/8 719), in urban areas (33.62%, 2 571/7 647) and in suburbs (27.33%, 3 231/11 824). Lower education [high school (OR=1.56,95%CI:1.46-1.66), middle school (OR=1.99,95%CI:1.88-2.12), primary school and below (OR=2.28,95%CI:2.12-2.45)], non-Han ethnicity (OR=1.19, 95%CI: 1.07-1.33), unmarried (OR=1.16, 95%CI: 1.08-1.24), drinking alcohol (OR=3.06, 95%CI: 2.94-3.19), obesity (OR=1.85, 95%CI: 1.77-1.93), overweight (OR=1.41, 95%CI: 1.36-1.47), etc., were positively correlated with the high risk of cardiovascular disease. Conclusions: We noticed that the prevalence of high-risk groups of cardiovascular disease aged 35-75 years was around 20% in Beijing, and the proportion in males was higher than females. Low education, drinking, overweight, and obesity were positively correlated with the risks of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
1. Chicken erythrocytes in blood vessels are the most abundant circulating cells, which participate in the host's immune responses. The transcription factor nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) plays a vital role in the inflammatory response following viral infections. However, the expression of the NF-κB pathway, and other immune-related genes in chicken erythrocytes infected with low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV H9N2), has not been extensively studied.2. The following study determined the interaction of LPAIV H9N2 with chicken erythrocytes using indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. This was followed by investigating myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MyD88), C-C motif chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5), melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5), the inhibitor of nuclear factor-kappa B kinase subunit epsilon (IKBKE), NF-κB inhibitor alpha (NFKBIA), NF-κB inhibitor epsilon (NFKBIE), interferon-alpha (IFN-α), colony-stimulating factor 3 (CSF3) and tumour necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) by mRNA expression using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) at four different time intervals (0, 2, 6 and 10 h).3. There was a significant interaction between erythrocytes and LPAIV H9N2 virus. Furthermore, the mRNA expression of the NF-κB pathway and other immune-related genes were significantly up-regulated at 2 h post-infection in infected chicken erythrocytes, except for TRAF6, which were significantly downregulated. While at 0 h post-infection, IFN-α and CSF3 were significantly upregulated, whereas NFKBIA was significantly downregulated. Further expression of MDA5, CCL5 and NFKBIA was upregulated, while TRAF6 was downregulated at 6 h post-infection. In infected erythrocytes, expression of MyD88, CCL5 and IKBKE was upregulated. However, IFN-α and TRAF6 were downregulated at 10 h post-infection.4. These results give initial evidence that the NF-κB pathway, and other genes related to immunity, in chicken erythrocytes may contribute to LPAIV subtype H9N2 and induce host immune responses.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the associations of urinary retinol binding protein (RBP) and β2-microglobulin (β2-MG) with urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) and renal function in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A total of 1 030 Chinese patients with T2DM were included in this study. The subjects were divided into the UACR normal group (<30 mg/g), microalbuminuria group (30-300 mg/g) and macroalbuminuria group (>300 mg/g). Patients with normal UACR were further divided into two groups according to the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR): the eGFR low group (<90 ml·min-1·1.73m-2) and the normal eGFR group (≥90 ml·min-1·1.73m-2). Urine RBP and β2-MG levels among the groups were compared. Multiple linear regression analyses were applied to evaluate risk factors of urine RBP and β2-MG. Results: In all patients (n=1 030), urine RBP and β2-MG increased gradually with the increase of UACR across the three groups, the proportions of abnormal urine RBP (>0.7 mg/L) and β2-MG (>370 μg/L) in these groups were 3.8%, 8.5%, 39.0% (P<0.001), and 12.9%, 26.7%, 46.8% (P<0.001), respectively. In the UACR normal group (n=788), 12.2% of the patients were with eGFR<90 ml·min-1·1.73m-2. The proportion of abnormal β2-MG (>370 μg/L) was higher in the eGFR low group than that in the eGFR normal group (29.2% vs. 10.7%, P<0.001). Multivariate linear stepwise regression analyses were performed using natural logarithm of urine RBP or β2-MG as dependent variable, and showed that urine RBP was independently associated with UACR (β=0.0005, P<0.001), serum creatinine (β=0.006, P<0.001) and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (β=0.050, P=0.001), and β2-MG was independently correlated with UACR (β=0.000 4, P<0.001), serum creatinine (β=0.011, P<0.001), systolic blood pressure (β=0.005, P=0.031) and fasting blood-glucose (β=0.027, P=0.046). Conclusions: Urine RBP and β2-MG are positively associated with high UACR and impaired renal function in T2DM patients, and these changes could occur before UACR and eGFR turned out to be abnormal. It is recommended that urine RBP and β2-MG be detected as early as possible to identify diabetic kidney disease in patients with normal UACR and eGFR.

Abstract
目的 评估外周血细胞检测结果在以硼替佐米为一线治疗的多发性骨髓瘤(MM)患者中的预后作用。 方法 回顾性分析2014年1月至2016年12月浙江大学医学院附属第一医院和浙江省舟山医院收治的155例初诊MM患者的临床数据,患者均一线接受以硼替佐米为基础方案的治疗。分析外周血细胞检测结果,包括ANC、单核细胞计数(AMC)、HGB、红细胞平均体积(MCV)、PLT以及其他临床特征对MM患者的预后评估作用。 结果 AMC(>0.6×109/L)、MCV(>99.1fl)以及PLT(<150×109/L)明显影响MM患者无进展生存(PFS)和总生存(OS),以上3个因子分别赋值1分,形成血细胞积分。结果显示,64例(41.3%)积分0,57例(36.8%)积分1,32例(20.6%)积分2,2例(1.3%)积分3,4组患者中位PFS时间分别为42.8、26.5、15.8、6.4个月(P<0.001),中位OS时间分别为未达到和48.2、31.1、31.4个月(P=0.001)。多因素分析提示,血细胞积分(2~3对0~1)和骨髓浆细胞比例(>30%对≤30%)为PFS的独立预后因素(HR分别为1.95和1.76),而患者年龄(>65岁对≤65岁)、R-ISS分期(Ⅲ期对Ⅰ~Ⅱ期)和血细胞积分(2~3对0~1)是OS的独立预后因素(HR分别为2.08、2.13和2.12)。 结论 血细胞积分简单易得,可用于新药时代初治MM患者的预后评估,但仍需扩大病例并进行前瞻性研究进一步明确。

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the factors affecting olfactory disfunctions in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Methods: This was a retrospective analysis. Eighty-eight patients with CRSwNP who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery in Beijing Anzhen Hospital from 2014 to 2018 were enrolled, including 22 males and 66 females, with the age of (48.1±11.3) years old(Mean±SD). Sniffin' Sticks olfactory test, Lund-Mackay score and modified sinus CT olfactory cleft score, nasal resistance and acoustic reflex examination, blood routine and blood biochemistry test, serum specific IgE test were performed before surgery and nasal polyps of all patients were collected for eosinophil count during surgery. According to bilateral total TDI score, the patients were divided into normal olfactory function group and olfactory disfunction group. The clinical baseline data were compared between the two groups. According to the results of single factor analysis, factors which were significant different between the two groups and clinically useful indicators were further included in the multivariate Logistic regression model analysis, then a model predicting olfactory disfunction in patients with CRSwNP was initially established. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Among 88 patients with CRSwNP, 32 (36.4%) patients were with normal olfaction and 56 (63.6%) patients were with olfactory disfunction, including 40 (45.5%) of hyposmia and 16 (18.2%) of anosmia. Tissue eosinophil count, blood eosinophil percentage and blood urea concentration had significant difference between the two groups (12.7[2.0, 52.3]/HP (M[P(25), P(75)]) vs 38.6[16.2, 87.0]/HP, 2.75[1.60, 4.80]% vs 4.35[2.50, 6.60]%, (5.56±1.15) mmol/L vs (4.98±1.33) mmol/L, all P<0.05). Modified sinus CT olfactory cleft score and Lund-Mackay score except for ostiomeatal complex score were statistically significant between the two groups (all P<0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the bilateral and total olfactory cleft score and blood urea concentration were statistically significant, in addition, the bilateral and total olfactory cleft score was a risk factor (OR=2.108, 95%CI: 1.407-3.159, P<0.001) and blood urea within a certain concentration was a protective factor (OR=0.461, 95%CI: 0.240-0.884, P=0.020). Further studies found that the area under the ROC curve of the model with tissue eosinophil count, blood eosinophil percentage, bilateral and total olfactory cleft score, total inspiratory volume and blood urea concentration was 0.888 (P<0.01), which had good predictive value for olfactory disorders in CRSwNP. Conclusions: The modified sinus CT olfactory cleft score is closely related to the olfactory disorders in patients with CRSwNP. A certain degree of elevated blood urea concentration may have a protective effect on the olfactory function of patients with CRSwNP.

Abstract
Objective: To examine the characteristics and trends regarding the 30-day coronary heart disease (CHD) readmission rates in patients discharged for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Beijing, during 2007-2012. Methods: Patients hospitalized for AMI in Beijing from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2012 were identified from "The Cardiovascular Disease Surveillance System in Beijing". In total, 64 355 patients aged 25 years and over with permanent Beijing residency survived and discharged for AMI in Beijing during the above-said six years. After excluding duplicate and validation for the completeness and accuracy of the records, clinical features and 30-day CHD readmission rates for those AMI discharged patients were analyzed. Trends regarding the 30-day CHD readmission rates in patients discharged for AMI were analyzed by Poisson regression models. Results: The overall age-standardized average 30-day CHD readmission rate for AMI discharged patients was 7.7% in patients aged 25 years and over in Beijing. During the six years under study, an increasing trend was observed on the 30-day CHD readmission rates for AMI discharged patients after adjusting the age and gender (P<0.001). The age-standardized 30-day CHD readmission rates for AMI discharged patients increased by 21.3% in the past six years, from 7.0% in 2007 to 8.5% in 2012. The increase of 30-day CHD readmission rates was noted in both men and women during the six years, whereas it appeared higher in women (8.4%) than in men (7.4%), after adjusting for age. Among the AMI discharged patients, the 30-day CHD readmission rates were higher in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) than those with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients (P<0.01), and higher in discharged patients with multiple comorbidities than those without multiple comorbidities (P<0.01). Conclusions: An increasing trend in the 30-day CHD readmission rates for AMI discharged patients was observed during 2007-2012 among Beijing residents aged 25 years and over. It called for an urgent need in improving the secondary prevention of AMI discharged patients, particularly in women, with NSTEMI and those with multiple comorbidities. Findings from these unselected "real-world" data in Beijing may help to guide the management of AMI in the country as well as in other developing countries.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the clinical value of the superior thyroid artery peak systolic velocity (STA-PSV) for the differential diagnosis of autoimmune thyrotoxicosis. Methods: A total of 301 patients with newly diagnosed thyrotoxicosis and without any anti-thyroid drug intervention were collected from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Peking University People's Hospital from Jan. 2015 to Oct. 2018. Among them, 241 patients were with Graves' disease (GD) and 60 patients were with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). STA-PSV, thyroid function and thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb) were determined. A multiple linear regression was used to identify factors associated with STA-PSV. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the discriminating ability of STA-PSV to GD. Results: STA-PSV leves in GD group were significantly higher than those in AIT group [61.00 (41.00, 86.50) cm/s vs. 34.50 (25.25, 46.00) cm/s, P<0.001]. The ROC curve analysis showed that the AUC was 0.790 (95%CI 0.734-0.845), and 49.5cm/s was the optimal cutoff point for the diagnosis of GD, in which the sensitivity was 64.3% and the specificity was 83.3%. In all patients with thyrotoxicosis, multiple linear regression analyses showed free thyroxine (FT(4)) (β=0.371, 95%CI 0.005-0.010, P<0.001) and TRAb (β=0.138, 95%CI 0.001-0.014, P=0.035) were positively associated with STA-PSV. Conclusions: The STA-PSV is positively associated with FT(4) and TRAb levels, and it is a helpful marker in differential diagnosis between GD and AIT.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the effect of tissue eosinophil count on olfactory function in patients with chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps(CRSwNP). Method:We prospectively selected 59 patients with CRSwNP. All the patients were not treated with oral or topical glucocorticoids for at least 1 month at the time of enrollment. All the nasal polyps were taken under local anesthesia in the outpatient department for eosinophil count and percentage calculation. The patients were divided into eosinophilic CRSwNP(ECRS group) and non-eosinophilic CRSwNP(non-ECRS group). Baseline data was compared between the two groups. Spearman correlation analysis was performed on tissue eosinophil count and Lund-Mackay score, modified olfactory cleft scores, Sniffin' Sticks olfactory test, olfactory evoked potential peak latency and amplitude respectively. Result:Thirty-five of 59 patients with CRSwNP completed olfactory evoked potential test, from whom we collected stable waveforms. The ECRS group had a higher olfactory cleft area CT score, ethmoid sinus CT score and blood eosinophil count and percentage; there was a significant difference between the ECRS group and the non-ECRS group in single and bilateral odor test threshold(T value)(P=0.017). There was no significant correlation between tissue eosinophil count and subjective olfactory VAS score(P>0.05). Tissue eosinophil count was related to the bilateral T value in Sniffin' Sticks olfactory test(r=-0.322, P=0.013), anterior and posterior olfactory cleft area scores(r=0.431 and 0.415, respectively, P=0.001) and olfactory evoked potential N1 latency(r=0.504, P=0.001) and P2 latency(r=0.374, P=0.020), but not related to Lund-Mackay scores. In addition, there was a significant correlation between the unilateral T score in Sniffin' Sticks test and the unilateral olfactory evoked potential N1 latency(r=-0.505, P=0.002). Conclusion:The increase of tissue eosinophilia was closely related to olfactory disfunctions in CRSwNP. It could be reflected by modified CT olfactory cleft score, Sniffin' Sticks olfactory test T value and oERP peak latency. In addition, T value was negatively consistent with latency of oERP N1 peak.

Abstract
Objective:To evaluate the effect of surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps(CRSwNP) by subjective and objective olfactory tests. Method:This was a retrospective study. Forty patients with CRSwNP who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS) from 2015 to 2017 in Beijing Anzhen Hospital were enrolled. Postoperative time was 6-46 months. The patients were followed up in October 2018 and examined using Sniffin' sticks olfactory test and olfactory event-related potentials (oERP). The polyps collected during surgery were performed to eosinophil count and percentage calculation. They were divided into eosinophilic CRSwNP(ECRS) and non-eosinophilic CRSwNP(NECRS). The subjective and objective olfactory functions between the two groups were compared before and after surgery respectively and the paired T test was performed between the postoperative and the preoperative Sniffin' sticks olfactory test. Covariance analysis was used to adjust the effect of different postoperative time on postoperative olfactory recovery. Result:There were 21(52.5%) ECRS and 19(47.5%) NECRS patients of the 40 patients with nasal polyps. There was statistical difference in the posterior ethmoid score and the posterior olfactory cleft score of CT. According to the criterion of total TDI increased more than 5.5, olfactory function in 21(52.5%) patients had improved. In addition, there was a significant improvement in olfactory function in ECRS group either in unilateral T/TDI or bilateral T/D/TDI, but only unilateral T/TDI increased in NECRS group. There was no significant difference in Sniffin' sticks olfactory test between the two groups, but there was a statistically significant difference in the latency of oERP after surgery. Conclusion:ESS could improve olfactory function in patients with CRSwNP by more than 50%. Bilateral olfactory improvement in ECRS was better than that in NECRS, but olfactory function in postoperative ECRS was still lower than that in NECRS. oERP can more objectively and accurately reflect the severity of olfactory disorders associated with eosinophilic inflammation.

Abstract
Maggot therapy is a kind of biological therapy that uses maggot to eat and remove the necrotic tissue of wounds, while it has no adverse effect on living tissue with blood supply. Besides, maggot therapy can promote wound healing through various mechanisms, which has been used for debridement and treatment of wounds as early as hundreds of years ago. With the discovery and application of antibiotics, maggot therapy faded out of the medical field once. However, with the abuse of antibiotics and increasing drug resistance of bacteria in recent years, maggot therapy attracts widespread attention of clinicians again. This article reviews the advances in the application of maggot therapy in chronic wounds.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the association between long-term changes in blood pressure (BP) levels and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Methods: A total of 5 752 participants, who participated baseline examination in 1992-1993 and re-examination in 2007, were followed up till December 31, 2013 according to the study protocol of the Chinese Multi-provincial Cohort Study. Participants were stratified by baseline BP and re-examination BP and cross-combined into 9 subgroups. The 20-year incidence of acute cardiovascular events, acute coronary heart disease (CHD) and acute stroke events were analyzed and association between disease incidence and 15-year changes in BP were determined using the competing risk regression model. Results: (1) There were 523 CVD events (170 CHD, 373 stroke) during the 20 years follow up. The number of participants with baseline systolic blood pressure (SBP)/diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of <130/80 mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa), 130-139/80-89 mmHg, and hypertension were 2 892 (50.3%), 1 328 (23.1%) and 1 532 (26.6%), respectively. (2) Among participants with baseline SBP of 130-139 mmHg or DBP of 80-89 mmHg, 870 (65.5%) progressed to hypertension and 279 (21.0%) maintained at the same stratum over a 15-year follow up period. (3) After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, diabetes, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol at baseline, participants maintained SBP/DBP at 130-139/80-89 mmHg had a higher risk of developing acute cardiovascular events, CHD and stroke with the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of 2.04 (1.16, 3.57), 3.29 (1.30, 8.35) and 1.63 (0.80, 3.33), compared with those who maintained their SBP < 130 mmHg and DBP <80 mmHg. Participants whose BP increased from 130-139/80-89 mmHg to hypertension over the follow up period had 2.81-fold (1.84, 4.29), 3.17-fold (1.43, 7.03) and 2.71-fold (1.65, 4.44) higher risk for the incidence of acute cardiovascular events, CHD, and stroke, respectively, compared with participants who maintained their SBP <130 mmHg and DBP <80 mmHg. Conclusions: Participants with SBP/DBP of 130-139/80-89 mmHg have a high long-term risk for progression to hypertension. Sustained exposure to SBP/DBP of 130-139/80-89 mmHg or higher increases the risk of CVD incidence, and our results highlight the importance of early prevention for participants with this BP stratum.

Abstract
Objective:To discuss the correlation between adenoid hypertrophy and laryngopharyngeal reflux in children, and to determine the accuracy of reflux symptom index(RSI) and reflux finding score(RFS) in predicting adenoid hypertrophy and laryngopharyngeal reflux(LPR). Method:Assessment of RSI and RFS was performed in 71 children with adenoid hypertrophy who underwent surgery.The adenoid biopsy specimens were examined by pepsin immunohistochemical staining. According to the positive results of pepsin staining to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of RSI and RFS to predict LPR. Result:Among the 71 children with adenoid hypertrophy, RSI was greater than 13 points in 4 cases (5.63%), RFS was greater than 7 points in 26 cases (36.62%), and 1(1.41%) was positive in both scores. Pepsin expression was detected in 52 cases of adenoid hypertrophy tissues, with a total positive rate of 73.24% (52/71),most were strong positive(15/71,21.13%)and positive(23/71,32.39%). The higher the adenoid hypertrophy grade, the higher the expression level of pepsin (r=0.476, P<0.01).Define the positive rate of pepsin as the gold standard for the diagnosis of LPR, the sensitivity and specificity of RSI and RFS were 5.77%,34.62% and 94.74%,57.89% respectively. Pepsin staining intensity was positively correlated with troublesome or annoying cough(r=0.356, P=0.002)and was negatively correlated with ventricular obliteration(r=-0.212,P=0.038). Conclusion:There is a correlation between adenoid hypertrophy and LPR in children,LPR plays an important role in the development of adenoid and the role and mechanism of pepsin in adenoid hypertrophy needs further studyAs the low sensitivity of RSI and RFS, it is not suitable for the screening of adenoid hypertrophy in children with LPR. Children with adenoid hypertrophy cough for a long time and the laryngoscopy shows the ventricular obliteration, the presence of LPR should be warned.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the distribution and trends in 30-day coronary heart disease (CHD) case fatality rate in patients hospitalized due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Beijing during 2007-2012. Methods: The clinical data of patients hospitalized due to AMI in Beijing from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2012 were collected from "The Cardiovascular Disease Surveillance System in Beijing" . A total of 77 943 local patients aged ≥25 years were hospitalized due to AMI in Beijing during the this period. After excluding duplicate records and validation for the completeness and accuracy of the records, the clinical characteristics of the patients and 30-day CHD case fatality rate in the patients were analyzed. Trends in 30-day CHD case fatality rate in the patients were analyzed with Poisson regression models. Results: The age-standardized average 30-day CHD case fatality rate was 9.7% in the 77 943 patients. During this period, a decreasing trend was observed in 30-day CHD case fatality rate after adjusting for age and gender (P<0.001). The age-standardized 30-day CHD case fatality rate decreased by 16.0%, from 10.8% in 2007 to 9.0% in 2012. The decreases of 30-day CHD case fatality rates were noted in both men and women, whereas 30-day CHD case fatality rate was higher in women (14.1%) than in men (7.6%) after adjusting for age. During this period, the proportion of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) decreased, while the proportion of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) increased with year. A significant decline (20.1%) in 30-day case fatality rate of STEMI was found, but no decline was found for 30-day mortality rate of NSTEMI. Conclusion: A decreasing trend in 30-day CHD case fatality rate was observed in the patients aged ≥25 years and hospitalized due to AMI in Beijing during 2007-2012, indicating the improvement in short-term prognosis of patients hospitalized due to AMI. Our findings highlight the urgent need to improve the treatment for woman and NSTEMI patients.

Abstract
Objective: To discuss the relationship between lingual tonsil hypertrophy and laryngopharyngeal reflux. Methods: Ninety-two patients who received throat surgery in Nanfang Hospital between October 2015 and October 2016 were enrolled. Twenty-six healthy volunteers were recruited as normal controls. All participants were assessed with the reflux finding score(RFS) and the size of lingual tonsils were evaluated using a clinical grading system proposed by Friedman under electronic laryngoscope. The score of reflux symptom index(RSI), personal history and medical history were gathered. Biopsy specimens of lingual tonsils were taken from all participants for the immunohistochemical stain of pepsin.SPSS 19.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: There were 46.2% (12/26) pepsin-positive and 53.8% (14/26) pepsin-negative volunteers in normal controls. There were 87.0% (80/92) pepsin-positive and 13.0% (12/92) pepsin-negative patients in study group. The severity of lingual tonsil hypertrophy and expression intensity of pepsin in patients were significantly higher in volunteers (Z=-3.636, Z=-5.273, P<0.01). The severity of lingual tonsil hypertrophy was positively associated with the pepsin level in patients (r=0.556, P<0.01). The patients with pepsin-positive expression showed significant correlation between lingual tonsil hypertrophy and the positive rate of RSI and RFS (r=0.258, r=0.225, P<0.05). Analysis of correlated factors indicated that lingual tonsil hypertrophy was associated with smoking (χ(2)=8.502, P<0.05). Conclusions: The expression of pepsin can be detected in lingual tonsil tissues. The lingual tonsil hypertrophy is closely related to laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Abstract
PURPOSE Various genetic variants have been reported to be linked to an increased risk of meningioma. However, no confirmed conclusion has been obtained. The purpose of the study was to investigate potential meningioma-associated gene polymorphisms, based on published evidence. MATERIALS AND METHODS An updated meta-analysis was performed in September 2016. After electronic database searching and study screening, we selected eligible case-control studies and extracted data for meta-analysis, using Mantel-Haenszel statistics. P-values, pooled odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS We finally selected eight genes with ten polymorphisms: MLLT10 rs12770228, CASP8 rs1045485, XRCC1 rs1799782, rs25487, MTHFR rs1801133, rs1801131, MTRR rs1801394, MTR rs1805087, GSTM1 null/present, and GSTT1 null/present. Results of meta-analyses showed that there was increased meningioma risk in case groups under all models of MLLT10 rs12770228 (all OR >1, P<0.001), compared with control groups. Similar results were observed under the allele, homozygote, dominant, and recessive models of MTRR rs1801394 (all OR >1, P<0.05), and the heterozygote and dominant models of MTHFR rs1801131 in the Caucasian population (all OR >1, P<0.05). However, no significantly increased meningioma risks were observed for CASP8 rs1045485, XRCC1 rs25487, rs1799782, MTHFR rs1801133, MTR rs1805087, or GSTM1/GSTT1 null mutations. CONCLUSION Our updated meta-analysis provided statistical evidence for the role of MLLT10 rs12770228, MTRR rs1801394, and MTHFR rs1801131 in increased susceptibility to meningioma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of anemia in urban community dwelling elderly population. METHODS This study was a cross-sectional survey of prevalence of anemia in randomly selected community dwelling residents aged over 65 years in Beijing. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin concentration less than 130 g/L in men and 120 g/L in women. RESULTS The hemoglobin concentration was (135.65±14.48) g/L in total of 1 947 eligible participants and was much higher in men than in women [(142.56±15.56) g/L vs (130.95±11.53) g/L, P<0.001]. There were 288 (14.8%) patients with anemia, including 16.3%(129/789) in men and 13.7%(159/1 158) in women. The prevalence of anemia increased significantly with age, which was 7.6% in 65-69 years, 10.8% in 70-74 years, 18.8% in 75-79 years and 24.1% over 80 years (P<0.001). Two hundred and seventy-nine (96.9%) subjects were mild anemia, 8 (2.8%) moderate, only 1 subject (0.3%) severe. Unexplained anemia was predominant, which accounted for 63.2%. Only 16.7% people were diagnosed as nutritional anemia, renal anemia 5.2%, anemia of chronic disease (ACD) 12.2%. There were 2.4% people with overlapped renal anemia and ACD. Compared with non-anemic subjects, more subjects with unexplained anemia represented macrocytosis (7.1% vs 3.2%, P=0.007). CONCLUSIONS Anemia is a common health problem in urban community dwelling elderly population. Most subjects have anemia with unknown origin. Further investigation is needed to explore the mechanism and related factors of elderly anemia.

Abstract
To elucidate the dynamic characteristics of cotton growth and development after soil salt content reduction (SD) at bud stage and its effect on yield formation, a pot experiment was conducted in which soil salt content was declined from 5 per thousand level to 2 per thousand level at cotton bud stage. The results showed that the plant height, biomass, total fruit branch and fruit node number, boll number, boll mass of cotton plants increased after soil salt content reduction at bud stage. The distribution proportions of biomass in root and boll decreased after soil salt content reduction, however, the distribution proportions of biomass in leaf, main stem and fruit branch were on the rise. The growth rate of cotton plant increased after soil salt content reduction. Plant dry matter accumulation rate of SD cotton exceeded CK cotton at 22 days after soil salt content reduction. The response of different organs of cotton plant were different to soil salt content reduction, the plant height was the earliest, followed by the fruit branch and fruit node formation, and the bud and boll were the latest, which indicated that the compensation effect of cotton growth and development after soil salt content reduction at bud stage firstly appeared on the formation and growth of new leaf, fruit branch and fruit node, and on this basis, gradually brought out yield compensation.

Abstract
AIM Aim of the study was to summarize the types and quantities of peripheral hematocytopenia in the patients of hypersplenism caused by cirrhotic portal hypertension and investigate the effect of surgery, including splenectomy on the patient's peripheral blood cells and liver function. METHODS The quantities of peripheral blood cells in the 322 patients of hypersplenism, caused by cirrhotic portal hypertension, were retrospectively studied. Then, the preoperative and postoperative values of peripheral blood cells and liver function were compared in 266 patients who were followed up. The liver function was scored and graded according to Child-Pugh scoring system. RESULTS The study enrolled 322 patients who showed hematocytopenia, including multi-hemocyte decrease in 206 patients (64%) and simple hemocyte decrease in 116 patients (36%). After surgical treatment in the 226 patients who were followed up, the quantities of peripheral blood cells significantly increased (P<0.01), Child-Pugh grade A increased by 32 patients (14.2%), while Child-Pugh grade C increased only by 2 patients (0.9%), the liver function scores decreased (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Hypersplenism caused by cirrhotic portal hypertension mainly manifests as a multi-hemocyte decrease and rarely shows single types of hematocytopenia. Surgical intervention including splenectomy can increase the reduction of hemocytes and promote the recovery of liver function.

Abstract
Disseminated adenoviral infection (AI) is associated with profound immunosuppression and poor outcome after allogeneic hematopoietic SCT (allo-HSCT). A better understanding of AI in allo-HSCT recipients can serve as a basis to develop more effective management strategies. We evaluated all adult patients who received allo-HSCT at MD Anderson Cancer Center between 1999 and 2008. Among the 2879 allo-HSCT patients, 73 (2.5%) were diagnosed with AI. Enteritis (26%) and pneumonia (24%) were the most common clinical manifestations; pneumonia was the most common cause of adenovirus-associated death. A multivariable Bayesian logistic regression showed that when the joint effects of all covariates were accounted for, cord blood transplant, absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) ≤ 200/mm(3) and male gender were associated with a higher probability of disseminated AI. The OS was significantly worse for patients with AI that was disseminated rather than localized (median of 5 months vs median of 28 months, P<0.001) and for patients with ALC ≤ 200/mm(3) (P<0.001). Disseminated AI, in patients who received allo-HSCT, is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Strategies for early diagnosis and intervention are essential, especially for high-risk patients.

Abstract
SnO2 zigzag nanobelts were successfully Sb-doped by a simple vapor deposition method. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize these Sb-doped nanobelts. The Sb doping in SnO2 nanobelts was confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is found that there is no apparent lattice distance difference between the pure SnO2 and the 0.705 at% Sb doped SnO2 nanobelts. A slight blue-shift in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra was shown with the increase of Sb doping concentration and a reasonable explanation was given.

Abstract
AIM To determine the performance of glycated haemoglobin (HbA(1c)) as a screening tool for detecting newly diagnosed diabetes (NDM) and pre-diabetes. METHODS A diabetes survey was conducted in Beijing among community dwellers who were willing to participate in the survey. Included in the survey were 903 individuals aged 21-79 years without previously diagnosed diabetes and in whom HbA(1c) and other required covariates had been measured. NDM and pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance + impaired fasting glucose) were defined according to the World Health Organization 1999 criteria based on 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was plotted to determine the performance of HbA(1c). RESULTS The prevalence of NDM and pre-diabetes was 11.1% and 22.4%, respectively. At an optimal HbA(1c) cut-off point of > or = 6.0%, the test gave a sensitivity of 80.0% and a specificity of 89.8% for diagnosing NDM; at an optimal cut-off point of > or = 5.7%, the sensitivity was 59.4% and specificity 73.9% for diagnosing pre-diabetes. Individuals with HbA(1c)> or = 6.0% tended to be more obese than those with HbA(1c) < 6.0%, but blood pressure and lipid profiles did not differ between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS HbA(1c) as a single screening test is adequate to detect newly diagnosed diabetes but is not able to identify pre-diabetes in this obese Chinese population.

Abstract
The effects of supplementing a barley-based diet for weaned piglets withexogenous beta-glucanase and xylanase on gastrointestinal digestiveenzyme activities were investigated. Thirty-six cross-bred weaned pigletswere randomly assigned to two groups with three pens based on sexand mass. Each group was fed on the diet based on barley with or withoutadded beta-glucanase and xylanase (0.15%) for a 4-week period. Theresults showed that enzyme supplementation improved growth performanceof piglets significantly (p < 0.05), but had no effect (p = 0.091)on average daily feed intake. The results also showed that supplementationof beta-glucanase and xylanase had no effect on pepsin activity in gastriccontents but slightly decreased (p = 0.092) the pepsin activity ingastric mucosa. Meanwhile, no effect of enzyme supplementation ontrypsin activity in duodenal contents was observed. However, the activitiesof amylase and lipase in duodenal contents were significantly(p < 0.05) decreased, whereas the activities of maltase, sucrase andgamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GT) in jejunal and ileal mucosa wereenhanced significantly (p < 0.05). The improvement of disaccharidaseand gamma-GT activity may be attributed to the positive impacts of exogenousenzymes on digestion and absorption of the nutrients. In conclusion,the current results indicated that supplementation with enzymes in barley-based diets could improve the growth performance of piglets,decrease the activities of amylase and lipase in duodenal contents andincrease the activities of disaccharidase and gamma-GT in jejunal and ilealmucosa.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Recently, variants in the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene have been found to be consistently associated with type 2 diabetes in different populations. In this study, we hypothesized that TCF7L2 also contributed to genetic susceptibility for type 2 diabetes in a Chinese population. METHODS We looked for new variants by direct sequencing of all exons and intron-exon junctions of TCF7L2 in 100 Chinese type 2 diabetic patients, and then we genotyped five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by Snapshot technology in 1,000 Chinese individuals. RESULTS By sequencing, we identified six SNPs (c.1,637C>A; c.1,674C>G; c.1,709G>A; c.1,846C>G; c.1,888C>T; and c.1,876T>G), and three of them led to non-synonymous polymorphisms (c.1,637C>A, His-->Gln or Pro-->Thr; c.1,674C>G, Pro-->Arg; and c.1,709G>A, Ala-->Thr). All of them are rare except c.1,637C>A, which had a frequency of 0.23 for the minor A allele in 98 sequenced individuals. In a case-control study, one of the newly discovered SNPs (c.1,637C>A), together with four reported ones (rs7903146, rs12255372, rs290487 and rs3814573) were genotyped. Comparison between allele and genotype frequencies of these SNPs in patients and controls showed marginal association for rs7903146 and rs290487 with type 2 diabetes (p = 0.063, OR 1.982, 95% CI 1.128-3.485; p = 0.071, OR 1.237, 95% CI 0.983-1.557, respectively). No association was found for rs12255372, rs3814573, c.1,637C>A and type 2 diabetes (p = 0.278-1.000). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION With the current sample size, we did not find any mutation in the coding sequence of TCF7L2 that confers a genetic risk for type 2 diabetes in a Chinese population, and did not replicate some of the major positive results obtained in other populations.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate strains of lactobacilli for their ability to persist and secrete heterologous protein in the oral cavity. METHODS AND RESULTS Four different strains of common oral lactobacilli, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus johnsonii, Lactobacillus murinus and Lactobacillus plantarum, were transformed with the plasmid pKTH2121, which contains a secretion cassette for beta-lactamase. Lactobacilli isolated from the mouth of host mice were also transformed with pKTH2121 for later feeding. Lactococcus lactis, transformed with pKTH2121, was also fed to mice as a negative control. All transformed isolates were fed to C57Black mice in varying schedules. The number of transformed bacteria persisting in the mouth was reported as a percentage of total oral bacteria recovered by swabbing. CONCLUSIONS The transformed L. lactis, L. brevis, L. johnsonii, L. murinus, and the endogenous murine lactobacillus strain failed to persist in the mouth. Transformed L. plantarum, however, persisted in the mouth and comprised up to 25% of the total lactobacilli at 18 h and 10% at 24 h after feeding. L. plantarum recovered after feeding retained its ability to secrete beta-lactamase into culture medium efficiently. Beta-lactamase activity could be detected in oral secretions at 8 h after feedings. After repeated feedings, however, the L. plantarum containing pKTH2121 gradually lost its ability to persist after feedings. This experiment demonstrates that L. plantarum can transiently colonize the oral mucosa in large numbers, while continuously secreting foreign proteins, raising the possibility of using lactobacilli as a vector for delivery of oral mucosal peptides.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary arsenic (As) levels on growth performance, serum biochemistry, and the retention of iron, copper, and zinc in tissues of growing and finishing pigs. Ninety-six crossbred pigs were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments. The corn-soybean basal diets were supplemented with 0, 10, 20, and 30 mg As/kg. Arsenic trioxide was used as the arsenic source. The feeding experiment lasted for 78 d. The results showed that the high arsenic diet decreased average daily gain (ADG) (p<0.05) and increased feed gain ratio (F/G) (p<0.05). Arsenic intake significantly increased (p<0.05) serum gamma-gultamyltransferase (GGT), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities, and decreased (p<0.05) total protein, urea nitrogen, creatinine, and triglycerides. Glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) activity, albumin, and cholesterol were not affected (p>0.05). Arsenic feeding elevated (p<0.05) liver and kidney copper concentration, but reduced (p<0.05) copper concentration in heart, bile, and lymphaden of intestine mesentery. There were increases in iron levels in liver, bile, spleen, thymus, and pancreas in pigs fed the high As diets (p<0.05), but iron contents in kidney, heart, and serum were decreased by the arsenic treatment (p<0.05). Zinc concentrations were increased (p<0.05) in liver, kidney, and thymus of pigs with arsenic treatment, but decreased (p<0.05) in bile and lymphaden of intestine mesentery. This study suggested that high dietary As levels could alter serum biochemical parameters and the retention of copper, iron, and zinc in the viscera of growing and finishing pigs.

Abstract
Kodamaea ohmeri is a yeast that rarely causes human infections. The first case of K. ohmeri fungaemia in a premature neonate is reported; it was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B. Biochemical identification of the yeast was performed by Vitek II and API and was confirmed by rRNA gene sequencing. K. ohmeri as a human pathogenic yeast is uncommon to hospitalized neonates and immunocompromised individuals.

Abstract
The clinical significance of Mycobacterium lentiflavum, a recently identified nontuberculous mycobacterium, remains uncertain, especially in immunosuppressed cancer patients. The records of all patients in whom M. lentiflavum was identified using a gene sequencing technique between January 2001 and December 2003 were reviewed. The mean age among 12 patients was 51+/-20 years, and 11 (92%) patients had a hematologic malignancy. Six of seven (86%) hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients had received allogeneic donor grafts. Nine (75%) patients had predisposing risk factors for infection, seven (58%) had severe lymphocytopenia (<400 cells/microl), five (42%) were receiving systemic corticosteroid therapy, and three (25%) had acute graft-versus-host disease. Only 1 of the 12 (8%) patients had evidence of probable pulmonary M. lentiflavum infection. Six M. lentiflavum strains were initially misidentified as Mycobacterium simiae and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex using traditional biochemical tests. Four M. lentiflavum isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility; they were susceptible to isoniazid, ethambutol, clarithromycin, and amikacin, and resistant to rifampin. M. lentiflavum was not clinically significant, even in these severely immunosuppressed cancer patients.

Abstract
One hundred and ninety-two crossbred pigs (barrows, Duroc x Landrace x Yorkshine, initial weight 27.6 kg) were used to evaluate the effects of montmorillonite nanocomposite (MNC) on cadmium (Cd) retention in tissues of growing pigs. The animals were randomly assigned to 2 supplementations of Cd (0 or 10 mg/kg) and 2 levels of MNC (0 or 0.5%) in a 2x2 factorial arrangement. Each group was fed corn-soybean basal diets and consisted of 3 replications of 16 pigs. The feeding experiment lasted 83 d. Pig growth performances decreased significantly by addition of 10 mg Cd/kg (p<0.05) and improved with supplementation of MNC (p<0.05). Addition of MNC with Cd decreased Cd retentions in muscle, liver, kidney, spleen, thymus and lymphaden of pigs (p<0.05). MNC also decreased tissue Cd residues of pigs fed the diet without added Cd (p>0.05). There were decreased iron levels and increased copper levels in serum and liver of 10 mg Cd/kg treatment (p<0.05). Zinc content in serum and liver was not affected by the addition of Cd (p>0.05). Serum and liver iron, copper and zinc concentrations of pigs fed MNC without added Cd were unaffected by MNC (p>0.05).

Abstract
A 14-year-old boy who was neutropenic following chemotherapy for leukemia developed fungemia caused by the yeast Kodomaea ohmeri ( Pichia ohmeri). The infection was cured by catheter removal and the use of fluconazole. A 74-year-old man who had undergone surgeries for a subcutaneous tumor developed polymicrobic cellulitis involving Kodomaea ohmeri. Despite surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy, the patient died of complications. Including these 2 cases, there have been 10 Kodomaea ohmeri infections reported thus far, all occurring in patients with pre-existing conditions. There have been seven cases of fungemia and one case each of peritonitis, funguria, and cellulitis. The treatment employed varied depending on the site/source of infection. Seven patients recovered and three died. The microbiological data available suggest that Kodomaea ohmeri can be identified definitively by biochemical tests and is susceptible to amphotericin B and either susceptible to or dose dependently susceptible to itraconazole and fluconazole.

Abstract
Preceding mental sweating response (MSR) during mental stress, small wavelets and large waves are observed on EEG. In the present study, locations of current sources of the large waves were estimated. The results revealed that the current dipole was estimated around the orbits, reflecting activity of the eyelid or eye muscles.

Abstract
Pulmonary granuloma is a common lesion for which gram-negative bacteria are rarely implicated as a cause. Hence, most physicians are unaware of this etiology. We isolated a gram-negative bacterium from a surgically resected pulmonary granuloma in a 42-year-old, nonimmunocompromised woman. Within the necrotizing granuloma, numerous organisms also were demonstrated by Gram stain, suggesting a cause-disease relationship. Characterization of the bacterium by sequence analysis of the 16S ribosomal gene, cellular fatty acid profiling, and microbiologic studies revealed a novel bacterium with a close relationship to Pseudomonas. We propose a new species for the bacterium, Pseudomonas andersonii. These results suggest that the differential diagnosis of a lung granuloma also should include this gram-negative bacterium as a potential causative agent, in addition to the more common infections caused by acid-fast bacilli and fungi. This bacterium was shown to be susceptible to most antibiotics that are active against gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract
Mental-sweating response (MSR) was observed in the palm when the subject was asked to perform a mentally stressful task such as memory recall or mental calculation. About 4 s before the development of MSR, small MSR-related wavelets (MSR wavelets) and large waves were randomly generated on electroencephalograph. After differentiating the two types of waves, we calculated locations of the current dipole of MSR wavelets using the two-dipole model of the SSB/dipole tracing method. The result showed that one current dipole of MSR wavelets was consistently located in the hippocampus while the other dipole was widely dispersed in the cortex during memory recall and mental calculation.

Abstract
Allelic loss on chromosome 13 occurs frequently in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. However, studies of the two known tumor suppressor genes located on 13q, RB1 and BRCA2, have shown few mutations, suggesting that other genes are likely to be involved in the development of this tumor type. To identify a minimal deletion interval, we first analyzed 42 microsatellite markers spanning chromosome bands 13q11-q13 in 56 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients, including 34 with a family history of upper gastrointestinal cancer and 22 without a family history of cancer. Lifestyle risk factors and clinical/pathologic characteristics were also collected. Two commonly deleted regions were identified: one was located on band 13q12.11, between markers D13S787 and D13S221; the other was located on bands 13q12.3-q13.1 from markers D13S267 to D13S219. We observed higher allelic loss frequencies for eight of the microsatellite markers in those patients with a family history of upper gastrointestinal cancer compared to patients without such a history. This study suggests that one or more unidentified tumor suppressor genes are located on chromosome arm 13q that play a role in the development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
Records of 31 patients with cancer who did not have known human immunodeficiency virus infection and who developed culture-proven cryptococcosis during the period of 1989-1999 (incidence of 18 cases per 100,000 admissions) were retrospectively reviewed. Several presentations of cryptococcosis were seen, including pulmonary in 19 patients (13 of which were symptomatic), disseminated in 6, meningeal in 3, and other, less common manifestations in 3. Hematologic malignancy (in 20 patients [65%]) was the most common underlying disease. Lymphopenia was present in 19 patients (61%). Previous steroid use was noted in 16 patients (51%). The diagnosis of cryptococcosis was rarely suspected; lung and brain malignancy were frequent initial impressions. Cryptococcosis was diagnosed postmortem in only 2 cases (6%). In cases of both pulmonary and meningeal cryptococcosis, the yield of invasive diagnostic procedures was good. Antifungal treatment was heterogeneous, but only 18% of patients who received it had treatment failure. Fluconazole monotherapy was successful in 92% of patients. In conclusion, cryptococcosis is rare in patients with cancer and appears to have a relatively good diagnostic yield and therapeutic outcome.

Abstract
This experiment tested the hypothesis that running-induced damage to rat skeletal muscle causes changes in synthesis and degradation of basement membrane type IV collagen and to proteins regulating its degradation. Samples from soleus muscle and red and white parts of quadriceps femoris muscle (MQF) were collected 6 h or 1, 2, 4, or 7 days after downhill running. Increased muscle beta-glucuronidase activity indicated greater muscle damage in the red part of MQF than in the white part of MQF or soleus. In the red part of MQF, type IV collagen expression was upregulated at the pretranslational level and the protein concentration decreased, whereas matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), a protein that degrades type IV collagen, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2), a protein that inhibits degradation, were increased in parallel both at mRNA and protein levels. Type IV collagen mRNA level increased in the white part of MQF and soleus muscle. The protein concentration increased in the white part of MQF and was unchanged in soleus muscle. MMP-2 and TIMP-2 changed only slightly in the white part of MQF and soleus muscle. The changes seem to depend on the severity of myofiber injury and thus probably reflect reorganization of basement membrane compounds.

Abstract
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most common fatal cancers worldwide, and north central China has some of the highest rates in the world. Previous studies from tumors in this area of China have shown high frequencies of allelic loss on chromosome 17p13-11, which includes the region where the TP53 gene is found. We examined 56 ESCC patients using single-strand conformation polymorphism and DNA sequencing to assess the frequency and spectrum of TP53 mutation and the association between allelic loss at microsatellite marker TP53 and TP53 mutations. Ninety-six % of cases were found to have at least one genetic alteration, including TP53 mutation (77%), allelic loss within the TP53 gene (73%), and/or loss of heterozygosity at the TP53 microsatellite marker (80%); 75% had two or more such alterations, including 59% with both a point mutation and an intragenic allelic loss ("two hits"). The majority of mutations observed were in exon 5, where the most common type of nucleotide substitution was a G:C-->A:T or C:G-->T:A transition, including half that occurred at CpG sites. Allelic loss was most commonly found in exon 4 but was very common in exon 5 as well. Taken together, the multiple genetic alterations of TP53 in this population at high risk for ESCC indicate that there is a very high degree of genetic instability in these tumors, that TP53 is a primary target for inactivation, and that this tumor suppressor gene plays a critical role in the carcinogenesis process for ESCC.

Abstract
To explore the expression of the autoantibodies to ICA512 and GAD65 in the sera of diabetic patients who will be diagnosed as Type 1 diabetes, autoantibody assays were carried out in 15 diabetic patients complicated with ketonemia or ketoacidosis and in 19 healthy controls. The results were that the positive ratios of these autoantibodies were higher in the patient's sera than in the control's, and were higher in patients with shorter disease duration than those with longer disease duration. It is suggested that detecting these autoantibodies is helpful to the classification of diabetes and the disease duration affects the antibody's positive ratio.

Abstract
Allelic loss on chromosome 17p has been reported frequently in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and generally encompasses the p53 locus at 17p13.1. However, a good correlation between allelic loss on 17p and mutation of p53 has not been found. This suggests the possibility that unknown tumor suppressor genes near p53 may be involved in the development of ESCC. To evaluate this possibility, we analyzed 30 microsatellite markers covering the entire short arm of chromosome 17 in 56 ESCC patients from a high risk population in northern China, including 34 with a family history of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancer and 22 without a family history of any cancer. Cancer lifestyle risk factors and clinical/pathological characteristics were also collected. We found frequent allelic loss (>/=65%) at 28 of the 30 markers evaluated in these ESCC patients. The highest frequencies of allelic loss (> or =80%) were found in three smaller regions: deletion region I located at 17p13.3-p13.2 (between D17S849 and D17S1828); deletion region II located at 17p13.2-p13.1 (between D13S938 and TP53); deletion region III located at 17p13.1-p12 (between D17S804 and D17S799). A number of genes have already been identified in these deleted regions, including: OVCA1, OVCA2 and HIC-1 in deletion region I; p53 in deletion region II; ZNF18, ZNF29, ALDH3 and ALDH10 in deletion region III. These results will help us direct future testing of candidate genes and narrow the search region for major new tumor suppressor genes that may play a role in the pathogenesis of ESCC.

Abstract
In order to determine whether Ala-Pro-Gly-Try-NH2 (APGW-amide) could affect mammalian excitable cells, we investigated the effect of APGW-amide in PC12 cells. APGW-amide caused a rapid [Ca2+]i elevation, which was completely prevented by elimination of extracellular Ca2+ with EGTA and inhibited by two L-type Ca2+ channel blockers. [Ca2+]i elevation was also blocked by a specific PKC inhibitor and prolonged pretreatment of cells with PMA. These results indicate that APGW-amide elevates [Ca2+]i in PC12 cells, possibly by Ca2+ influx via L-type Ca2+ channel activated by PKC.

Abstract
The responses of neck muscle to sudden transit from one 'g' to hyper 'g', work to support the head and remain the relative position of head on trunk as common observed: i.e. in sudden acceleration or deceleration by car or ejection of pilot from aircraft. Accordingly it is highly possible that the neck muscle responses to moving up may be important to prevent the neck injury due to sudden linear acceleration such as moving up against gravity. However little is known about the evaluation of mechanism of this reflex. Therefore the present study was conducted with two aims. The first aim was to investigate the neck muscle responses to vertical linear acceleration bv 0.4 g produced with an electro-hydraulic servo-system. We chose the vertical linear acceleration because it activates mainly sacculus, from which afferents have been demonstrated to be connected directly to sternocleidomastoid muscle in animals and human. The second aim was to determine whether there is a difference of neck muscle response to moving down and moving up.
