Effectiveness of stress management interventions for nursing students: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Elevated stress levels are related to diminished mental health, potentially leading to decreased well-being and performance of nursing students. While researchers have focused on developing stress management interventions, there is a need to synthesize the evidence. A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to assess the evidence for the effectiveness of stress management interventions in nursing students. A systematic literature search identified controlled stress management interventions employing a validated psychological or physiological stress measure. Forty-one studies were included, with 36 forming a pool of 2715 participants in the meta-analysis. The overall effect on psychological stress was positive. Intervention type, delivery modality, intervention duration in weeks, and number of sessions were moderators of intervention effectiveness, with more significant effects for mind-body programs, on-site delivery methods, durations of 9-12 weeks, and 15-30 sessions. For physiological stress, the biomarkers of blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels decreased significantly. Future research is necessary for promising outcomes related to currently underrepresented indicators and to investigate the long-term effects of interventions.

Spatiotemporal variation, partitioning, and ecological risk assessment of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles, and benzotriazole UV absorbers in the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent area

The distributions and toxicities of the pollutants benzothiazoles (BTHs), benzotriazoles (BTRs), and benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVs) have attracted much attention, but most research has focused on freshwater environments and few have examined their levels in marine environments. This study, for the first time, investigated the spatial and temporal variability and ecological risks of BTHs, BTRs and BUVs in the Yangtze River estuary and its adjacent area, and further elucidated how environmental factors influence the transport of these contaminants. The concentrations of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in seawater showed significant seasonal variability, with the highest concentrations in summer, followed by autumn, and then winter-spring. The spatiotemporal variability in BTHs, BTRs and BUVs in the seawater and sediments samples showed decreasing trends from nearshore to offshore, reflecting the influence of river discharge. Marine debris and continuous discharge from cities were responsible for the high detection frequency of these contaminants in the YRE and its adjacent area. Furthermore, the moderate risk from the presence of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs as they accumulate in sediments should not be ignored. Our study provides new insights into the fate and ecological risk of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in the estuary.

Diagnostic value of dynamic contrast enhancement combined with conventional MRI in differentiating benign and malignant lacrimal gland epithelial tumours

AIM

To establish the diagnostic value of the quantitative parameters of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with conventional MRI in differentiating of benign and malignant lacrimal gland epithelial tumours.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis of primary lacrimal gland epithelial tumours confirmed by histopathology was conducted. Conventional MRI features and DCE-MRI quantitative parameters were collected and subjected to analysis. The diagnostic value was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 53 patients were enrolled of which 29 had malignant, whereas 24 had benign tumours. Conventional MRI revealed statistically significant differences between benign and malignant tumours regarding maximum tumour diameter, posterior margin characteristic, bone destruction, and erosion. The Ktrans and Kep values obtained by DCE-MRI were higher in malignant than in benign tumours, with a statistically significant (p<0.001 and p=0.022). A type I time-signal intensity (TIC) curve was more frequent in benign tumours, whereas a type II TIC curve was prevalent in malignant tumours (p=0.001). ROC analysis showed that Ktrans had the best diagnostic value of the DCE-MRI parameters (area under the ROC curve [AUC] of 0.822, 75.9% sensitivity, and 83.3% specificity, p<0.001). The combination of conventional MRI and DCE-MRI factors had the best diagnostic value and balanced sensitivity and specificity (AUC of 0.948, 93.1% sensitivity, and 91.7% specificity, p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The present findings indicate that the combination of quantitative parameters of DCE-MRI and image characteristics of conventional MRI have a high diagnostic value for the diagnosis of benign and malignant lacrimal gland epithelial tumours.

[Characteristics and clinical analysis of MLH1 c.463dupC gene mutation in a Lynch syndrome family]

In this study, a case of Lynch syndrome (LS) family line with a novel mutation site in the MLH1 c.463dupC gene was reported and the clinical and pathogenic genetic features of this family were analyzed. A 40-year-old female patient with colon cancer diagnosed at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University on October 2, 2020 was retrospectively included. The clinical data of the family were collected and the family lineage was drawn. The family tumor history met the Amsterdam Criteria Ⅱ and the diagnostic criteria of LS in Chinese, which was a typical LS family lineage. A germline code-shift missense mutation c.463dupC in the MLH1 gene located in exon 6, a possible pathogenic variant, was detected by second-generation sequencing (NGS) in the patient. Subsequently, Sanger sequencing was performed on a total of 20 direct lineage members of the family of the MLH1 gene, 7 cases were found to harbor the mutation and included in the LS high-risk control. Follow-up to October 2023 showed that the patient had endometrial and cervical polyps, one case had colorectal cancer, and two cases had intestinal polyps, all were treated with early intervention and therapy; two cases did not show any clinical symptoms. This study is the first to report a new mutation site for the potentially pathogenic MLH1 c.463dupC, providing a rationale for the pathogenicity of the mutation and standardized health management for familial carriers.

Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic integration of amphenmulin: a novel pleuromutilin derivative against Mycoplasma gallisepticum

Amphenmulin is a novel pleuromutilin derivative with great anti-mycoplasma potential. The present study evaluated the action characteristics of amphenmulin against Mycoplasma gallisepticum using pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling approaches. Following intravenous administration, amphenmulin exhibited an elimination half-life of 2.13 h and an apparent volume of distribution of 3.64 L/kg in healthy broiler chickens, demonstrating PK profiles of extensive distribution and rapid elimination. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of amphenmulin against M. gallisepticum was determined to be 0.0039 µg/mL using the broth microdilution method, and the analysis of the static time-kill curves through the sigmoid Emax model showed a highly correlated relationship (R ≥ 0.9649) between the kill rate and drug concentrations (1-64 MIC). A one-compartment open model with first-order elimination was implemented to simulate the in vivo anti-mycoplasma effect of amphenmulin, and it was found that bactericidal levels were reached with continuous administration for 3 days at doses exceeding 0.8 µg/mL. Furthermore, the area under the concentration-time curve divided by MIC (AUC/MIC) correlated well with the anti-mycoplasma effect of amphenmulin within 24 h after each administration, with a target value of 904.05 h for predicting a reduction of M. gallisepticum by 1 Log10CFU/mL. These investigations broadened the antibacterial spectrum of amphenmulin and revealed its characteristics of action against M. gallisepticum, providing a theoretical basis for further clinical development.IMPORTANCEMycoplasma has long been recognized as a significant pathogen causing global livestock production losses and public health concerns, and the use of antimicrobial agents is currently one of the mainstream strategies for its prevention and control. Amphenmulin is a promising candidate pleuromutilin derivative that was designed, synthesized, and screened by our laboratory in previous studies. Moreover, this study further confirms the excellent antibacterial activity of amphenmulin against Mycoplasma gallisepticum and reveals its action characteristics and model targets on M. gallisepticum by establishing an in vitro pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic synchronization model. These findings can further broaden the pharmacological theoretical basis of amphenmulin and serve as data support for its clinical development, which is of great significance for the discovery of new antimicrobial drugs and the control of bacterial diseases in humans and animals.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into νe^{+}e^{-} or νπ^{0} final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01×10^{20} protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter |U_{μ4}|^{2} in the mass ranges 10≤m_{HNL}≤150  MeV for the νe^{+}e^{-} channel and 150≤m_{HNL}≤245  MeV for the νπ^{0} channel, assuming |U_{e4}|^{2}=|U_{τ4}|^{2}=0. Spatial distribution, partitioning, and ecological risk assessment of benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and benzotriazole UV absorbers in the eastern shelf seas of China

Benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTHs), and benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BUVs) have attracted increasing attention due to their ubiquity in the environment, toxicity, and potential ecological risks. However, information on their distributions in the ocean is scarce. In this study, BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were firstly determined in the surface seawater, sea-surface microlayer (SML), suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediments of the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS). The spatial distributions of BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs in the YS and ECS showed offshore decreasing trend in their concentrations, indicating that terrestrial inputs from runoff and rivers had important influences on their distributions. The organic carbon normalized partition coefficients (log Koc) of target contaminants in surface seawater-SPM (3.06-4.16 L/g) and bottom seawater-sediment (2.55-4.82 L/kg) systems were determined. SPM showed greater sorption capacities for most target contaminants than the sediment. The burial capacities of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs from SPM to surface sediments were evaluated using their respective log Kow values and their sedimentary fluxes in the YS and ECS were quantified. BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were enriched in the SML, with the enrichment extents of the suspended particulate phase being obviously lower than those of the dissolved phase. The ecological risks of BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were evaluated using the risk quotient (RQ) method, which showed no toxic risk to aquatic organisms throughout the water phases, but high risk in nearshore sediments.

Removal of sulfonamide antibiotics by a sonocatalytic Fenton-like reaction: Efficiency and mechanisms

With the widespread use of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), SAs are detected as residues in aquatic environments, posing a serious threat to human life and safety. Because of their high water solubility, fast transmission rate, and strong antibacterial properties, the safe disposal of SAs has become a key constraint for water quality assurance. Therefore, an ultrasound (US)-assisted zero-valent iron (ZVI)/persulfate (PS) system was proposed to explore the rapid and effective degradation of SAs. Comparative experiments were performed to study the removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ) by US, ZVI, PS, US/ZVI, US/PS, ZVI/PS, and US-ZVI/PS systems, respectively. Experimental results indicated that the highest removal efficiency of SDZ was ahieved in US-ZVI/PS system (97.4%), which were 2-44 times higher than that in other systems. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of five typical SAs was achieved over 95%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the US ZVI/PS system for SAs removal. Also, quantum chemical computations for potential reactive sites of SAs and intermediate product detection by HPLC‒MS/MS were performed. The radical attack on active sites of SAs, such as N atom (number 7), was the main reason for SAs removal in US-ZVI/PS system. Besides, the common degradation pathways of six typical SAs were defined as S-N bond cleavage, C-N bond cleavage, benzene ring hydroxylation, aniline oxidation, and R substituent oxidation. Interestingly, the unique pathway of "SO2 group extraction" was observed in the degradation of six-membered ring SAs. Therefore, the US-ZVI/PS system is a promising and cost-effective method for the removal of SAs and other refractory pollutants.

Efficacy and safety of oral Chinese patent medicines in the treatment of coronary heart disease combined with hyperlipidemia: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of 78 trials

AIM OF THE STUDY

To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of commonly used oral Chinese patent medicines for the treatment of coronary heart disease combined with hyperlipidemia in clinical practice through a network meta-analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, and CNKI databases were searched for all published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the treatment of coronary heart disease combined with hyperlipidemia using Chinese patent medicines. NoteExpress software was used to screen the literature obtained from the databases according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. A network meta-analysis was performed using R 4.2.1. Subgroup analyses of outcome indicators were made based on conventional treatment (CT) methods. The incidence of adverse events in the included RCTs was statistically analyzed. A funnel plot was drawn using RevMan 5.4.1 software for the assessment of bias in the total clinical effectiveness rate. Finally, the quality of evidence for interventions with statistically significant differences was evaluated using the GRADE system.

RESULTS

A total of 78 RCTs were included, involving 7,955 cases and 8 types of Chinese patent medicines, which were Tongxinluo Capsule, Naoxintong Capsule, Compound Danshen Dripping Pill, Shexiangbaoxin Pill, Songling Xuemaikang Capsule, Xuezhikang Capsule, Yindan Xinnaotong Capsule, and Zhibitai Capsule. A total of 24 RCTs reported the incidence of adverse events, but no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse events was found between the experimental and control groups in each study (P > 0.05). There was no obvious publication bias in all studies, but the overall quality of evidence in the included RCTs was low. Comparison of different intervention measures showed that Naoxintong Capsule + CT improved the cardiac index and cardiac output, and lowered the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol levels. Tongxinluo Capsule + CT raised high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and reduced triglyceride levels. Xuezhikang Capsule + CT improved the total clinical effectiveness rate. Subgroup analyses showed that differences in CT did not cause heterogeneity in the results.

CONCLUSION

Compared with the use of CT alone, the combined use of Chinese patent medicines with CT can effectively improve the symptoms in patients with both coronary heart disease and hyperlipidemia.

An Integrated Multi-Channel Deep Neural Network for Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Identification Using Multi-Modal Medical Data

Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease with recurrent seizures. Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is the most common pathological cause of epilepsy. With the development of computer-aided diagnosis technology, there are many auxiliary diagnostic approaches based on deep learning algorithms. However, the causes of epilepsy are complex, and distinguishing different types of epilepsy accurately is challenging with a single mode of examination. In this study, our aim is to assess the combination of multi-modal epilepsy medical information from structural MRI, PET image, typical clinical symptoms and personal demographic and cognitive data (PDC) by adopting a multi-channel 3D deep convolutional neural network and pre-training PET images. The results show better diagnosis accuracy than using one single type of medical data alone. These findings reveal the potential of a deep neural network in multi-modal medical data fusion.

PK-PD integration of enrofloxacin and cefquinome alone and in combination against Klebsiella pneumoniae using an in vitro dynamic model

Introduction: Klebsiella pneumoniae is classified as a critical pathogen in both animals and humans and infections can be fatal in chickens resulting in substantial economic losses. However, the misuse of antibiotics can also lead to drug resistance and a potential transmission chain between animals and humans. Three K. pneumoniae strains with different susceptibility phenotypes were chosen to study the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) integration of enrofloxacin (ENR) and cefquinome (CEQ) alone and in combination. Results: Checkerboard assay results indicated that the combination treatment for type strain ATCC 700603 was synergistic effect with a fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) of ≤0.5. The other two clinical strains demonstrated an additive effect (FICI >0.5 to ≤1). Furthermore, static time-kill curves indicated that enrofloxacin and cefquinome added singly were effective in killing K. pneumoniae at concentrations of >2 MIC and ≥1 MIC, respectively. Additionally, the combination of enrofloxacin and cefquinome led to an enhanced antibacterial activity of cefquinome. The dynamic time-kill curves indicated that enrofloxacin and cefquinome had bactericidal and bacteriostatic activities, respectively at ≥1.5 mg/L (single-dose) and 4 mg/L (8 h split-dose) causing a decrease in bacterial counts of ≥4.45 and >2 log10 CFU/mL. Enrofloxacin possessed no bacteriostatic effects against K. pneumoniae at a constant concentration of 1× MIC. Cefquinome used in combination with 1× MIC enrofloxacin exhibited bactericidal activity at ≥4 mg/L (12 h split-dose) with reductions of ≥3.65 log10 CFU/mL. The PK/PD parameters were also analyzed to determine the concentration and duration of the drugs needed to reduce bacteria by 3 log10 CFU/mL. For enrofloxacin alone, the AUC24h/MIC was 23.29 h and the Cmax/MIC was 3.18. For cefquinome alone, the %T > MIC was 48.66 and when used in combination with enrofloxacin was 18.04. The combined use of cefquinome and enrofloxacin can increase the antibacterial activity of cefquinome against K. pneumoniae under a 12-h split-dose regimen regardless of individual drug susceptibility. Discussion: The static and dynamic time-kill curves indicated that enrofloxacin exhibited concentration-dependent activity, while cefquinome exhibited time-dependent activity. In the in vitro dynamic model, enrofloxacin alone exhibited better antimicrobial effects against K. pneumoniae compared to cefquinome alone. However, the antibacterial effect of cefquinome can be enhanced by combining it with enrofloxacin. These findings suggest a potentially effective approach for combating K. pneumoniae infections.

Association between gut microbiota and endometriosis: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Background

Recent studies have shown that an imbalance in gut microbiota (GM) may not always be associated with endometriosis (EMS). To investigate this further, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Methods

MR analysis was performed on genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of GM and EMS. Specifically, the MiBioGen microbiota GWAS (N = 18,340) was used as exposure. The FinnGen study GWAS (8,288 EMS cases and 68,969 controls) was used as outcome. We primarily used the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method to analyze the correlation and conducted a sensitivity analysis to verify its reliability.

Results

(1) MR analysis: The results of the IVW method confirmed that a total of 8 GM taxa were related to the risk of EMS. Class-Melainabacteria (p = 0.036), family-Ruminococcaceae (p = 0.037), and genus-Eubacteriumruminantium (p = 0.015) had a protective effect on EMS, whereas order-Bacillales (p = 0.046), family-Prevotellaceae (p = 0.027), genus-Anaerotruncus (p = 0.025), genus-Olsenella (p = 0.036) and genus-RuminococcaceaeUCG002 (p = 0.035) could increase the risk of EMS. (2) Sensitivity analysis: Cochrane's Q test (p > 0.05), MR-Egger intercept method (p > 0.05), and leave-one-out method confirmed the robustness of MR results.

Conclusion

This study performed a MR analysis on two large national databases and identified the association between 8 GM taxa and EMS. These taxa could potentially be utilized for indirectly diagnosing EMS and could lead to novel perspectives in research regarding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of EMS.

First Double-Differential Measurement of Kinematic Imbalance in Neutrino Interactions with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated double-differential quasielasticlike neutrino-argon cross sections, which have been made using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data are presented as a function of kinematic imbalance variables which are sensitive to nuclear ground-state distributions and hadronic reinteraction processes. We find that the measured cross sections in different phase-space regions are sensitive to different nuclear effects. Therefore, they enable the impact of specific nuclear effects on the neutrino-nucleus interaction to be isolated more completely than was possible using previous single-differential cross section measurements. Our results provide precision data to help test and improve neutrino-nucleus interaction models. They further support ongoing neutrino-oscillation studies by establishing phase-space regions where precise reaction modeling has already been achieved.

Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic integration of tilmicosin against Pasteurella multocida in a piglet tissue cage model

Tilmicosin is a semi-synthetic macrolide for veterinary use with strong antibacterial effect on respiratory bacteria. In this study, the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) integration of tilmicosin against Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) was evaluated by establishing a piglet tissue cage infection model. Concentration of tilmicosin and bacterial numbers of P. multocida in the tissue-cage fluid were monitered. After the population of P. multocida was equal to or greater than 107 CFU/mL in a tissue cage, piglets received an oral administration of tilmicosin at a dose of 30, 40, 50, and 60 mg/kg b.w., once daily for 3 days, respectively. Bacteria were counted every 24 h after drug administration and at 48 and 72 h after the last administration. A sigmoidal Emax model was used to fit the relationship between PK/PD parameters and the antibacterial effect. AUC24h/MIC was the best PK/PD index that correlated with effectiveness of tilmicosin against P. multocida. The magnitude of AUC24h/MIC required for continuous 1/3-log, 1/2-log, and 3/4-log reductions were 19.65 h, 23.86 h, and 35.77 h, respectively, during each 24 h treatment period. In this study, when the dosage was >50 mg/kg, the AUC24h/MIC was still >35.77 h in the period of 24-48 h after the last administration due to the slow elimination, that is, tilmicosin exhibited a potent antibacterial effect against P. multocida after three successive daily administrations. The data provide meaningful guidance to optimize regimens of tilmicosin to treat respiratory tract infections caused by P. multocida.

Prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a hospitalized lung cancer population: a single center study

Background

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often coexists with lung cancer (LC) and has a detrimental effect on the prognosis of LC patients. Presently, there is a lack of adequate assessment regarding the management of COPD in LC patients. This study assessed the screening, prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of COPD in hospitalized LC patients and compared the management practices between two departments at our hospital.

Methods

We retrospectively assessed the data of 3,578 patients diagnosed with primary LC in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and the Department of Thoracic Surgery from January 2019 to December 2020. We also compared the rate of spirometry, COPD diagnosis and COPD inhalation treatment between the LC patients from both departments, the proportion of patients aware of their COPD diagnosis and adhered to inhaled therapy, and analyzed factors influencing COPD diagnosis and inhalation treatment.

Results

A total of 2,762 (77.2%) LC patients underwent spirometry, and the observed spirometry-defined COPD prevalence was 25.0% (690/2,762). The proportion of spirometry performed in the Department of Thoracic Surgery was significantly higher than in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (90.5% vs. 62.9%; P<0.001). The overall COPD diagnosis rate recorded in the discharge diagnosis in the 690 spirometry-defined COPD patients was 46.5% (321/690), and the COPD treatment rate during hospitalization was 45.2% (312/690). In addition, physicians from the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine had a higher diagnostic rate than surgeons from the Department of Thoracic Surgery (69.1% vs. 7.5%; P<0.001), as well as a better-standardized COPD treatment rate (60.6% vs. 18.6%; P<0.001). Further, the proportion of COPD inhalation treatment was higher among LC patients with COPD recorded in discharge diagnosis (74.8% vs. 19.5%; P<0.001), and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that COPD recorded in discharge diagnosis significantly increased the proportion of COPD awareness post-hospitalization (P<0.001).

Conclusions

This study showed that COPD could be a frequently undiagnosed and undertreated condition among LC patients, especially those hospitalized in a surgical ward. Additionally, a discharge diagnosis of COPD may increase the rate of inhalation treatment and awareness of the condition in LC patients.

Effect of dietary lutein on the egg production, fertility, and oxidative injury indexes of aged hens

OBJECTIVE

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary lutein on egg production, follicles, reproductive hormones, fertility, hatchability, and oxidative injury indexes of hens.

METHODS

Treatments consisted of a control diet (CON) and three lutein-supplementing diets at 25 (L1), 50 (L2), or 75 (L3) mg/kg of diet. Egg production was measured using 576 Arbor Acres breeder hens at 61 to 65 wk and follicles grades, reproductive hormones, fertility, hatchability, tissue lutein contents, and oxidative injury indexes were determined at 65 wk.

RESULTS

The results showed that at 65 wk, lutein- supplementing diets increased (p<0.05) egg production, follicular grades, fertility, hatchability, estradiol (E2), luteinizing hormone, progesterone (PROG), lutein content in the serum and yolk, compared to CON. L2 and L3 showed more pronounced (p<0.05) effects on egg production, PROG, and yolk lutein content than L1. With the increase of lutein doses from 25 to 75 mg/kg, there were linear increases (p<0.05) in egg production, lutein content, and PROG, and a quadratic trend (p<0.05) in E2. For the oxidative injury products, lutein-supplementing diets decreased (p<0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) in the serum, MDA and 8-hydroxy 2 deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in the yolk. There were linear decreases (p<0.05) in 8-OHdG in the serum, MDA, PCO, and 8-OHdG in the yolk, a quadratic trend (p<0.05) on serum 8-OHdG.

CONCLUSION

It is concluded that lutein supplementation can improve egg production and fertility by beneficially regulating reproductive hormones and oxidative status in aged hens.

[Expression changes of NaV channel subunits correlate with developmental maturation of electrophysiological characteristics of rat cerebellar Purkinje neurons]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the variations in the expression of voltage-gated sodium (Na_v) channel subunits during development of rat cerebellar Purkinje neurons and their correlation with maturation of electrophysiological characteristics of the neurons.

METHODS

We observed the changes in the expression levels of Na_V1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.6 during the development of Purkinje neurons using immunohistochemistry in neonatal (5-7 days after birth), juvenile (12-14 days), adolescent (21-24 days), and adult (42-60 days) SD rats. Using whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we recorded the spontaneous electrical activity of the neurons in ex vivo brain slices of rats of different ages to analyze the changes of electrophysiological characteristics of these neurons during development.

RESULTS

The expression of Na_V subunits in rat cerebellar Purkinje neurons showed significant variations during development. Na_V1.1 subunit was highly expressed throughout the developmental stages and increased progressively with age (P < 0.05). Na_V1.2 expression was not detected in the neurons in any of the developmental stages (P > 0.05). The expression level of Na_V1.3 decreased with development and became undetectable after adolescence (P < 0.05). Na_V1.6 expression was not detected during infancy, but increased with further development (P < 0.05). Na_V1.1 and Na_V1.3 were mainly expressed in the early stages of development. With the maturation of the rats, Na_V1.3 expression disappeared and Na_V1.6 expression increased in the neurons. Na_V1.1 and Na_V1.6 were mainly expressed after adolescence. The total Na_V protein level increased gradually with development (P < 0.05) and tended to stabilize after adolescence. The spontaneous frequency and excitability of the Purkinje neurons increased gradually with development and reached the mature levels in adolescence. The developmental expression of Na_V subunits was positively correlated with discharge frequency (r=0.9942, P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with the excitatory threshold of the neurons (r=0.9891, P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The changes in the expression levels of Na_V subunits are correlated with the maturation of high frequency electrophysiological properties of the neurons, suggesting thatmature Na_V subunit expressions is the basis of maturation of electrophysiological characteristics of the neurons.

Final Measurement of the ^{235}U Antineutrino Energy Spectrum with the PROSPECT-I Detector at HFIR

This Letter reports one of the most precise measurements to date of the antineutrino spectrum from a purely ^{235}U-fueled reactor, made with the final dataset from the PROSPECT-I detector at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. By extracting information from previously unused detector segments, this analysis effectively doubles the statistics of the previous PROSPECT measurement. The reconstructed energy spectrum is unfolded into antineutrino energy and compared with both the Huber-Mueller model and a spectrum from a commercial reactor burning multiple fuel isotopes. A local excess over the model is observed in the 5-7 MeV energy region. Comparison of the PROSPECT results with those from commercial reactors provides new constraints on the origin of this excess, disfavoring at 2.0 and 3.7 standard deviations the hypotheses that antineutrinos from ^{235}U are solely responsible and noncontributors to the excess observed at commercial reactors, respectively.

Generic dynamic molecular devices by quantitative non-steady-state proton/water-coupled electron transport kinetics

Dynamic molecular devices operating with time- and history-dependent performance raised new challenges for the fundamental study of microscopic non-steady-state charge transport as well as functionalities that are not achievable by steady-state devices. In this study, we reported a generic dynamic mode of molecular devices by addressing the transient redox state of ubiquitous quinone molecules in the junction by proton/water transfer. The diffusion limited slow proton/water transfer-modulated fast electron transport, leading to a non-steady-state transport process, as manifested by the negative differential resistance, dynamic hysteresis, and memory-like behavior. A quantitative paradigm for the study of the non-steady-state charge transport kinetics was further developed by combining the theoretical model and transient state characterization, and the principle of the dynamic device can be revealed by the numerical simulator. On applying pulse stimulation, the dynamic device emulated the neuron synaptic response with frequency-dependent depression and facilitation, implying a great potential for future nonlinear and brain-inspired devices.

Quantitative cardiac MRI parameters for assessment of myocarditis in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

To evaluate the role of quantitative cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) parameters in myocarditis, including acute and chronic myocarditis (AM and CM), for children and adolescents.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PRISMA principles were followed. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and grey literature were searched. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) checklist were utilised for quality assessment. Quantitative CMRI parameters were extracted and a meta-analysis was performed in comparison with healthy controls. The overall effect size was measured as the weighted mean difference (WMD).

RESULTS

Ten quantitative CMRI parameters of seven studies were analysed. Compared with the control group, the myocarditis group reported longer native T1 relaxation time (WMD=54.00, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 33.21,74.79, p<0.001), longer T2 relaxation time (WMD=2.13, 95% CI: 0.98, 3.28, p<0.001), increased extracellular volume (ECV; WMD=3.13, 95% CI: 1.34,4.91, p=0.001), elevated early gadolinium enhancement (EGE) ratio (WMD=1.47, 95% CI: 0.65,2.28, p<0.001), and increased T2-weighted ratio (WMD=0.43, 95% CI: 0.21,0.64, p<0.001). The AM group had longer native T1 relaxation times (WMD=72.02, 95% CI: 32.78,111.27, p<0.001), increased T2-weighted ratios (WMD=0.52, 95% CI: 0.21,0.84 p=0.001), and impaired left ventricular ejection fractions (LVEF; WMD=-5.84, 95% CI: -9.69, -1.99, p=0.003). Impaired LVEF (WMD=-2.24, 95% CI: -3.32, -1.17, p<0.001) was observed in the CM group.

CONCLUSION

Statistical differences can be observed in some CMRI parameters between patients with myocarditis and healthy controls; however, apart from native T1 mapping, there were no large differences in other parameters between two groups, which may reveal the limited benefit of CMRI in assessing myocarditis in children and adolescents.

First Measurement of Quasielastic Λ Baryon Production in Muon Antineutrino Interactions in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first measurement of the cross section of Cabibbo-suppressed Λ baryon production, using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector when exposed to the neutrinos from the main injector beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data analyzed correspond to 2.2×10^{20} protons on target running in neutrino mode, and 4.9×10^{20} protons on target running in anti-neutrino mode. An automated selection is combined with hand scanning, with the former identifying five candidate Λ production events when the signal was unblinded, consistent with the GENIE prediction of 5.3±1.1 events. Several scanners were employed, selecting between three and five events, compared with a prediction from a blinded Monte Carlo simulation study of 3.7±1.0 events. Restricting the phase space to only include Λ baryons that decay above MicroBooNE's detection thresholds, we obtain a flux averaged cross section of 2.0_{-1.7}^{+2.2}×10^{-40}  cm^{2}/Ar, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined.

Whole-genome sequencing of Paracoccus species isolated from the healthy human eye and description of Paracoccus shanxieyensis sp. nov

Currently, the genus Paracoccus comprises 76 recognized species. Members of Paracoccus are mostly isolated from environmental, animal, and plant sources. This report describes and proposes a novel species of Paracoccus isolated from clinical specimens of the human ocular surface. We isolated two aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, coccoid or short rod-shaped, and non-motile strains (designated DK398^T and DK608) from conjunctival sac swabs of two healthy volunteers. The results showed that the strains grew best under the conditions of 28°C, pH 7.0, and 1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Sequence analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene showed that strains DK398^T and DK608 were members of Paracoccus, most similar to Paracoccus laeviglucosivorans 43P^T (98.54 and 98.62 %), Paracoccus litorisediminis GHD-05^T (98.34 and 98.41 %), and Paracoccus limmosus NB88^T (98.21 and 98.29 %). Phenotypic analysis showed that DK398^T and DK608 were positive for catalase and oxidase, negative for producing N-acetyl-β-glucosaminic acid, arginine dihydrolase, and β-glucuronidase but positive for leucine arylamidase. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was Q-10, and the major polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, and an unidentified glycolipid. The major fatty acids (>10%) were summed feature 8 (C_18 : 1 ω7c and/or C_18 : 1 ω6c) and C_16 : 0. The meso-diaminopimelic acid was found in the cell wall peptidoglycan of DK398^T. The major cell wall sugars were ribose and galactose. Based on the results of phylogenetic analyses, low (<83.22%) average nucleotide identity, digital DNA-DNA hybridization (<26.0%), chemotaxonomic analysis, and physiological properties, strain DK398^T represents a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus shanxieyensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DK398^T (=CGMCC 1.17227^T=JCM 33719^T).

First Constraints on Light Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Combined Appearance and Disappearance Searches with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for eV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations in the MicroBooNE liquid argon detector, simultaneously considering all possible appearance and disappearance effects within the 3+1 active-to-sterile neutrino oscillation framework. We analyze the neutrino candidate events for the recent measurements of charged-current ν_{e} and ν_{μ} interactions in the MicroBooNE detector, using data corresponding to an exposure of 6.37×10^{20} protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam. We observe no evidence of light sterile neutrino oscillations and derive exclusion contours at the 95% confidence level in the plane of the mass-squared splitting Δm_{41}^{2} and the sterile neutrino mixing angles θ_{μe} and θ_{ee}, excluding part of the parameter space allowed by experimental anomalies. Cancellation of ν_{e} appearance and ν_{e} disappearance effects due to the full 3+1 treatment of the analysis leads to a degeneracy when determining the oscillation parameters, which is discussed in this Letter and will be addressed by future analyses.

Red blood cell distribution width and all-cause mortality in congestive heart failure patients: a retrospective cohort study based on the Mimic-III database

Background

The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a metric that measures the variation in the size of red blood cells and is presented as the red blood cell volume coefficient of variation. Increased RDW levels are closely linked to an elevated risk of death from congestive heart failure (CHF) and might be a new risk marker for cardiovascular disease. This research sought to evaluate the possible link between RDW levels and all-cause mortality in CHF patients after controlling for other covariates.

Methods

The publicly accessible Mimic-III database served as the source of data for our research. We employed ICU admission scoring systems to gather information on each patient's demographical data, laboratory test results, comorbid conditions, vital signs, and scores. Among CHF patients, the link between baseline RDW levels and short-, medium-, and long-term all-cause mortality was evaluated by Cox proportional hazard analysis, smooth curve fitting, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves.

Results

In total, 4,955 participants were selected for the study with an average age of 72.3 ± 13.5 years (old) and with males accounting for 53.1%. The findings recorded from the fully adjusted Cox proportional hazard model showed that higher RDW was associated with a greater risk of 30-day, 90-day, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause death; the HRs and 95% confidence intervals were 1.11 (1.05, 1.16), 1.09 (1.04, 1.13), 1.10 (1.06, 1.14), and 1.10 (1.06, 1.13), respectively. The results were stable and reliable using subgroup analysis. Smooth curve fitting and the K-M survival curve method further validated our results.

Conclusion

The RDW levels had a u-shaped connection with 30-day mortality. The RDW level was linked to an elevated risk of short-, medium-, and long-term all-cause death among CHF patients.

The association between serum anion gap and all-cause mortality of unselected adult patients: A retrospective cohort study of >20,000 patients

BACKGROUND

Even though the serum anion gap (AG) is frequently measured in clinical practice, there is not much research that has examined long-term mortality in unselected adult patients. Our study's objective was to investigate how serum anion gap levels could be used to predict death in unselected participants.

METHODS

The relationship between baseline serum AG levels and short-, intermediate-, and long-term all-cause mortality in unselected adult patients is examined using the Cox proportional risk analysis, smoothed curve fitting, subgroup analysis, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves.

RESULTS

After screening the database using the appropriate method, a total of 26,270 patients were enrolled in our study for the final data analysis. Our study used smoothed curve fit plots and COX proportional risk regression models incorporating cubic spline functions to evaluate the association between AG levels and all-cause mortality in a non-selected population, and the results indicated a non-linear relationship. In the fully adjusted model, we found that AG levels were positively associated with 30-day, 90-day, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause mortality in unselected adult patients with HRs of 1.08 95% CIs (1.06, 1.09); 1.08 95% CIs (1.06, 1.09); 1.08 95% CIs (1.07, 1.08); 1.07 95% CIs (1.06, 1.07).

CONCLUSION

Serum anion gap levels were positively correlated with all-cause mortality in unselected adult patients, with increasing levels of serum anion gap increasing patient mortality.

Characteristics and associations of microbial community in the eye, anterior nares, and oropharynx of healthy adults: eye-nose microbiota transmission

PURPOSE

We compared the microbial communities of the eye, anterior nares (ANs) and oropharynx (OP) of healthy adults to provide a basic understanding of the microbial associations among the three sites.

METHODS

The name of the registry of our prospective study was "Study on the diversity of microbial flora in the eye, nose and oropharynx of healthy people". The trial number is ChiCTR2300067724 (https://www.chictr.org.cn/index.aspx). Swabs were collected from the eye, ANs and OP of 48 healthy adult participants for 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The bacterial community profiles and their functional associations were compared among the three sites.

RESULTS

At a phylum level, the basic bacterial compositions in the eye and ANs were generally similar, and the predominant phyla were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. In contrast, the OP microbiota was characterized by an increased abundance of Bacteroidetes. At a genus level, Corynebacterium, Cutibacterium and Staphylococcus were the most abundant in the eye and ANs. Prevotella-7, Alloprevatella, Haemophilus and Streptococcus were more abundant in the OP. Correlation analysis of the eye and ANs microbiota suggested that Cutibacterium and Micrococcus may migrate from the eye to nose (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The bacterial flora composition and function predictions of eye and ANs were similar, but differed from those of the OP in healthy adults. The OP bacterial flora distribution was markedly different, showing characteristics similar to that of the digestive tract flora. Thus, the eye and ANs microorganisms may be related in healthy individuals. Cutibacterium and Micrococcus may migrate from the eye to the nose.

Alleviating effect of mulberry leaf 1-deoxynojirimycin on resistin-induced hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance in mice

Resistin is upregulated in obese humans and mice, and elevated serum resistin induces insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. Previous studies have revealed that mulberry 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) is important for a variety of physiological processes, especially carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. However, it remains unclear whether DNJ has a positive effect on insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis, and what the exact mechanism is. Male C57BL/6J mice were treated with resistin with or without DNJ. DNJ reversed the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)-induced by resistin and significantly decreased triglyceride levels both in the serum and liver. A histological analysis demonstrated that lipid accumulation significantly decreased in the DNJ group compared to the resistin group. A mechanistic analysis showed that DNJ significantly inhibited the resistin-induced decline in enzyme activities of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and hepatic lipase (HL) in serum and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in liver. FAS and Acox13α were significantly altered by resistin but restored by DNJ. Furthermore, DNJ partially but significantly restored insulin-stimulated glucose uptake compared with the resistin group, suggesting that DNJ reversed the insulin sensitivity impaired by hyperresistinemia. Treatment of AML12 cells with DNJ significantly restored the expression level and phosphorylation of Akt. The transcriptional levels of InsR and IRS1, as well as the protein levels of InsR and Glut4 and phosphorylation of PI3K and GSK3β, were also normalized in the DNJ-treated group. In conclusion: mulberry DNJ significantly alleviated liver steatosis and insulin resistance in hyperresistinemia.

Research on the temporal evolution track and influence of green development from 2010 to 2019

This study aims to analyze the balance and coordination during green and sustainable development and estimates the evolution track of the green development system from 2010-2019. The projection pursuit model (PPM), as well as the system gray prediction model GM (1, N) and other measurement methods, were used to construct an evaluation system accounting for green fortune, growth, and benefits to analyze the temporal evolution, developmental trends, and influencing factors of the ecological engineering construction area in Baoshan, Yunnan Province. The results revealed a relatively good green development system, with an upward trend, an average growth rate of 18.3%, and a synergistic coupling effect among the three subsystems. Regional green development has achieved remarkable progress, but challenges and pressure among the three subsystems remain. The prediction analysis also showed that the green development index in Baoshan will continue to increase over the next two years, suggesting that the regional green development system is effective. Green development is primarily affected by environmental pollution, industrial structure, urbanization, population, market, and other factors from the three subsystems of ecology, economy, and social benefits. This study provides practical reference values for prompting regional ecological advancement and green development, along with regional support for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Porphyrin COF and its mechanical pressing-prepared carbon fiber hybrid membrane for ratiometric detection, removal and enrichment of Cd2

A nitrogen (N), oxygen (O)-rich porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF), in which interlayer porphyrin molecules are vertically stacked, is prepared and characterized. As-prepared N,O-rich TpTph COF shows a high adsorption capacity for Cd²⁺ due to the abundant coordination sites. More interesting, it is found that the formation of COF enlarges the porphyrin ring center space, thus facilitating the Cd²⁺coordination, and the resulting optical signal changes make the ratiometric detection of Cd²⁺ possible. Furthermore, using carbon fiber (CF) filaments, which are obtained from low cost and easy-to-obtain actived carbon mask, as support, porphyrin COF-based CF@TpTph membrane is prepared through in-situ growth of COF on the support followed by simple mechanical pressing. The CF@TpTph membrane is demonstrated to work well for both Cd²⁺ removal and enrichment from soil and water samples, and shows the advantages of ease of handling, robust stability, reduced secondary pollution risk to samples, and good reusability. This work provides a powerful tool for Cd²⁺ removal and enrichment, exhibits that preparing porphyrin-based COFs is a feasible way to promote the interactions between porphyrin ring and Cd²⁺, and demonstrates that mechanical pressing is a promising strategy for the design of COF-based monolithic materials to promote the practical applications of COFs.

The species-level microbiota of healthy eyes revealed by the integration of metataxonomics with culturomics and genome analysis

Objectives

To characterize the healthy ocular surface microbiota at the species level, including cultured and uncultured taxa.

Methods

We integrated the metataxonomic method with culturomics and genome sequencing analysis of selected isolated strains to better illustrate the taxonomic structure of the ocular surface microbiota. The metataxonomics used the full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences and the operational phylogenetic unit strategy, which can precisely identify the cultured and uncultured or potentially new taxa to species level based on the phylogenetic tree constructed.

Results

We detected 1,731 operational phylogenetic units (OPUs) in 196 healthy eyes from 128 people, affiliated to 796 cultured species, 784 potentially new species, and 151 potentially new higher taxa. The microbiota for each eye had 49.17 ± 35.66 OPUs. Of the 796 cultured species, 170 (21.36%) had previously caused clinical infections. Based on where they were initially isolated, the ocular surface microbiota mainly came from human body sites (34.55%), the environment (36.93%), plants (9.05%), animals (4.90%), and others; 428 strains were isolated from 20 eyes, affiliated to 42 species, and had come from the environment (33.33%) and the skin (16.67%). Of these, 47.62% had previously caused clinical infections. Genome analysis of 73 isolators revealed that 68.5% of them carried antibiotic resistance genes. The most frequently isolated genera, namely Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Moraxella, had an average of 5.30, four, and three resistance genes per strain, respectively.

Discussion

The study found that the ocular surface microbiota mainly came from the environment, plants, animals, food, and human body sites such as the skin, oral cavity, upper respiratory tract, etc. No core member of ocular surface microbiota was detected at the species level. The human eyes were invaded and colonized by bacteria from the exposed environment, some of which were capable of causing infections in humans and carried antibiotic resistance genes. Preventive measures should be developed to protect our eyes from danger.

Comparison of the ocular surface microbiota between thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy patients and healthy subjects

Purpose

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is a chronic autoimmune disease. In this study, high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the diversity and composition of the ocular microbiota in patients with TAO.

Methods

Patients with TAO did not receive treatment for the disease and did not have exposed keratitis. Patients with TAO (TAO group) and healthy individuals (control group) were compared. All samples were swabbed at the conjunctival vault of the lower eyelid. The V3 to V4 region of the 16S rDNA was amplified using polymerase chain reaction and sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq 2500 Sequencing Platform. Statistical analysis was performed to analyze the differences between the groups and the correlation between ocular surface microbiota and the disease. The ocular surface microbiota of patients and healthy individuals were cultured.

Results

The ocular surface microbiota structure of TAO patients changed significantly. The average relative abundance of Bacillus and Brevundimonas increased significantly in the TAO group. Corynebacterium had a significantly decreased relative abundance (P<0.05). Paracoccus, Haemophilus, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium were positively correlated with the severity of clinical manifestations or disease activity (P<0.05). Bacillus cereus and other opportunistic pathogens were obtained by culture from TAO patients.

Conclusions

This study found that the composition of ocular microbiota in patients with TAO was significantly different from that in healthy individuals. The ocular surface opportunistic pathogens, such as Bacillus, Brevundimonas, Paracoccus, and Haemophilus in TAO patients, increase the potential risk of ocular surface infection. The findings of this study provide a new avenue of research into the mechanism of ocular surface in TAO patients.

Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6  ×  6  ×  6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Sleep Disturbances During the Menopausal Transition: The Role of Sleep Reactivity and Arousal Predisposition

BACKGROUND

Sleep disturbances are common during the menopausal transition and several factors can contribute to this increased incidence. This study examined the association between sleep reactivity, arousal predisposition, sleep disturbances, and menopause.

METHODS

Data for this study were derived from a longitudinal, population-based study on the natural history of insomnia. A total of 873 women (40-60 years) were divided into two groups according to their menopausal status at baseline: reproductive (n = 408) and postmenopausal (n = 465). Participants were evaluated annually throughout the five-year follow-up period. Four questionnaires were used to examine sleep quality, insomnia severity, sleep reactivity, and arousal predisposition. The data were analyzed using two approaches: cross-sectional with a multivariate analysis and binary regression, and longitudinal with a linear mixed models using menopausal groups (3) x time (5) design.

RESULTS

Cross-sectional analyses showed that postmenopausal women reported significantly more severe insomnia and poorer sleep quality than reproductive women. Sleep reactivity and arousal predisposition were significant predictors of sleep disturbances. Longitudinal analyses revealed increased sleep disturbances in the two years before and after the menopausal transition. Sleep reactivity and arousal predisposition did not moderate the temporal relationship between menopausal transition and sleep disturbances.

CONCLUSION

More sleep disturbances were reported during the menopausal transition, but those difficulties were not explained by sleep reactivity and arousal predisposition. These results suggest the involvement of other psychophysiological factors in the development of sleep disturbances during the menopause.

Search for an Excess of Electron Neutrino Interactions in MicroBooNE Using Multiple Final-State Topologies

We present a measurement of ν_{e} interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Three independent ν_{e} searches are performed across multiple single electron final states, including an exclusive search for two-body scattering events with a single proton, a semi-inclusive search for pionless events, and a fully inclusive search for events containing all hadronic final states. With differing signal topologies, statistics, backgrounds, reconstruction algorithms, and analysis approaches, the results are found to be either consistent with or modestly lower than the nominal ν_{e} rate expectations from the Booster Neutrino Beam and no excess of ν_{e} events is observed.

A NAC Transcription Factor from 'Sea Rice 86' Enhances Salt Tolerance by Promoting Hydrogen Sulfide Production in Rice Seedlings

Soil salinity severely threatens plant growth and crop performance. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a plant signal molecule, has been implicated in the regulation of plant responses to salinity stress. However, it is unclear how the transcriptional network regulates H₂S biosynthesis during salt stress response. In this study, we identify a rice NAC (NAM, ATAF and CUC) transcription factor, OsNAC35-like (OsNACL35), from a salt-tolerant cultivar ‘Sea Rice 86′ (SR86) and further show that it may have improved salt tolerance via enhanced H₂S production. The expression of OsNACL35 was significantly upregulated by high salinity and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The OsNACL35 protein was localized predominantly in the nucleus and was found to have transactivation activity in yeast. The overexpression of OsNACL35 (OsNACL35-OE) in japonica cultivar Nipponbare ramatically increased resistance to salinity stress, whereas its dominant-negative constructs (SUPERMAN repression domain, SRDX) conferred hypersensitivity to salt stress in the transgenic lines at the vegetative stage. Moreover, the quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that many stress-associated genes were differentially expressed in the OsNACL35-OE and OsNACL35-SRDX lines. Interestingly, the ectopic expression of OsNACL35 triggered a sharp increase in H₂S content by upregulating the expression of a H₂S biosynthetic gene, OsDCD1, upon salinity stress. Furthermore, the dual luciferase and yeast one-hybrid assays indicated that OsNACL35 directly upregulated the expression of OsDCD1 by binding to the promoter sequence of OsDCD1. Taken together, our observations illustrate that OsNACL35 acts as a positive regulator that links H₂S production to salt stress tolerance, which may hold promising utility in breeding salt-tolerant rice cultivar.

AB0784 Symptoms compatible with Rome IV functional bowel disorder in patients with ankylosing spondylitis

Background

Clinical manifestations of gut problems except for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have not been well-established in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). One study investigated that 30% patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms meeting Rome III criteria.[1]

Objectives

To determine the frequency of symptoms meeting Rome IV functional bowel disorder (FBD) in patients with AS, investigate factors associated with FBD symptoms, and assess whether having FBD symptoms might influence AS disease activity.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, we consecutively enrolled 153 AS patients without known colonic ulcer and 56 sex- and age-matched controls to evaluate FBD (or its subtypes) symptoms.[2] In AS group, logistic regression models were used to explore whether demographic data, disease activity, level of gut inflammation, drug use, and fibromyalgia [3] were associated with presence of gut symptoms. Finally, potential impacts of gut symptoms on AS disease status were assessed in linear regression models.

Results

Sixty (39.2%) of 153 AS patients had FBD symptoms, which was more prevalent than controls (23.2%). Besides, symptoms compatible with IBS and chronic diarrhea were detected in 18 and 43 AS patients respectively. For AS group, multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that symptoms of FBD, IBS, and chronic diarrhea were negatively associated with using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and positively associated with comorbid fibromyalgia, respectively. In exploration about effects of FBD (or its subtypes) symptoms on AS disease activity by multivariable linear regression analyses, FBD symptoms and chronic diarrhea had positive associations with assessments of AS respectively.

Conclusion

Patients with AS had frequent symptoms compatible with FBD, IBS, and chronic diarrhea, proportions of which were lower in those with NSAID-use. The improvement of FBD symptoms, especially chronic diarrhea, might be conducive to disease status of AS patients.

Computed Tomography Imaging-Based Radiogenomics Analysis Reveals Hypoxia Patterns and Immunological Characteristics in Ovarian Cancer

Purpose

The hypoxic microenvironment is involved in the tumorigenesis of ovarian cancer (OC). Therefore, we aim to develop a non-invasive radiogenomics approach to identify a hypoxia pattern with potential application in patient prognostication.

Methods

Specific hypoxia-related genes (sHRGs) were identified based on RNA-seq of OC cell lines cultured with different oxygen conditions. Meanwhile, multiple hypoxia-related subtypes were identified by unsupervised consensus analysis and LASSO–Cox regression analysis. Subsequently, diversified bioinformatics algorithms were used to explore the immune microenvironment, prognosis, biological pathway alteration, and drug sensitivity among different subtypes. Finally, optimal radiogenomics biomarkers for predicting the risk status of patients were developed by machine learning algorithms.

Results

One hundred forty sHRGs and three types of hypoxia-related subtypes were identified. Among them, hypoxia-cluster-B, gene-cluster-B, and high-risk subtypes had poor survival outcomes. The subtypes were closely related to each other, and hypoxia-cluster-B and gene-cluster-B had higher hypoxia risk scores. Notably, the low-risk subtype had an active immune microenvironment and may benefit from immunotherapy. Finally, a four-feature radiogenomics model was constructed to reveal hypoxia risk status, and the model achieved area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.900 and 0.703 for the training and testing cohorts, respectively.

Conclusion

As a non-invasive approach, computed tomography-based radiogenomics biomarkers may enable the pretreatment prediction of the hypoxia pattern, prognosis, therapeutic effect, and immune microenvironment in patients with OC.

First Measurement of Energy-Dependent Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report a measurement of the energy-dependent total charged-current cross section σ(E_{ν}) for inclusive muon neutrinos scattering on argon, as well as measurements of flux-averaged differential cross sections as a function of muon energy and hadronic energy transfer (ν). Data corresponding to 5.3×10^{19} protons on target of exposure were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping between the true neutrino energy E_{ν} and reconstructed neutrino energy E_{ν}^{rec} and between the energy transfer ν and reconstructed hadronic energy E_{had}^{rec} are validated by comparing the data and Monte Carlo (MC) predictions. In particular, the modeling of the missing hadronic energy and its associated uncertainties are verified by a new method that compares the E_{had}^{rec} distributions between data and a MC prediction after constraining the reconstructed muon kinematic distributions, energy, and polar angle to those of data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well modeled and underpins first-time measurements of both the total cross section σ(E_{ν}) and the differential cross section dσ/dν on argon.

Assessment of left ventricular systolic synchrony by peak strain dispersion in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical value of the peak strain dispersion (PSD) in evaluating left ventricular (LV) systolic synchrony in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

58 SLE patients without cardiovascular diseases and 60 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Both groups were examined by transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography. Traditional parameters were measured by conventional echocardiography. Two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging (2D-STI) was used to analyze the PSD and LV global longitudinal strain (LVGLS). Related ultrasound and blood test results were analyzed and compared.

RESULTS

The PSD was significantly higher in SLE patients than in controls (p<0.05). The LVGLS was significantly lower in SLE patients than in controls (p<0.05). The PSD was negatively correlated with the LVGLS.

CONCLUSIONS

LV systolic synchrony is impaired in patients with SLE disease. The PSD can be used as a new reliable index to evaluate LV systolic synchrony.

High-Performance Photodetectors Based on MoTe2-MoS2 van der Waals Heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have got extensive attention for multifunctional device applications in advanced nanoelectronics and optoelectronics, such as field-effect transistors, photodiodes, and solar cells. In our work, we fabricated MoTe₂-MoS₂ van der Waals heterostructure photodetectors with great performance using the mechanical exfoliation method and restack technique. It is demonstrated that our MoTe₂-MoS₂ heterostructure photodetector device can operate without bias voltage, possessing a low dark current (10 pA) and high photocurrent on/off ratio (>10⁴). Importantly, the room temperature photoresponsivity of the MoTe₂-MoS₂ photodetector can reach 110.6 and 9.2 mA W^-1 under λ = 532 and 1064 nm incident laser powers, respectively. Our results indicate that the van der Waals heterostructure based on 2D semiconducting materials is expected to play an important role in nanoscale optoelectronic applications.

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral-Current Δ Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess under a Single-Photon Hypothesis

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a ⟨0.8⟩  GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE's first three years of operations (6.80×10^{20} protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in situ high-purity measurement of NC π^{0} events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5±3.65(syst) and 145.1±13.8(syst) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (C.L.). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% C.L., in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world's best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

[Efficacy analysis of Venetoclax combined with TKI and dexamethasone-containing low-dose chemotherapy for relapsed/refractory Ph+acute B-lymphoblastic leukemia]

The clinical data of five cases of relapsed/refractory (R/R) Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute B-lymphocytic leukaemia (Ph⁺B-ALL) treated with Bcl-2 inhibitor venetoclax combined with tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) and dexamethasone-containing low-dose chemotherapy regimen at Zhengzhou University Cancer Hospital were analyzed, and the efficacy and safety were evaluated. Ponatinib was used in two of the five patients with T315I mutation, and flumatinib was used in other three patients. The results showed that, of the four minimal residual disease (MRD) positive patients, three achieved complete molecular remission (CMR) in the short term and one was ineffective. Another patient with morphological recurrence reached CR in one month. The overall response rate was 80%. Treatment related adverse reactions included mild skin pigmentation, gastrointestinal reactions, fatigue, and grade Ⅰ-Ⅱ bone marrow suppression.

Joint Measurement of the ^{235}U Antineutrino Spectrum by PROSPECT and STEREO

The PROSPECT and STEREO collaborations present a combined measurement of the pure ^{235}U antineutrino spectrum, without site specific corrections or detector-dependent effects. The spectral measurements of the two highest precision experiments at research reactors are found to be compatible with χ^{2}/ndf=24.1/21, allowing a joint unfolding of the prompt energy measurements into antineutrino energy. This ν[over ¯]_{e} energy spectrum is provided to the community, and an excess of events relative to the Huber model is found in the 5-6 MeV region. When a Gaussian bump is fitted to the excess, the data-model χ^{2} value is improved, corresponding to a 2.4σ significance.

Integrated clinical characteristics and omics analysis identifies a ferroptosis and iron-metabolism-related lncRNA signature for predicting prognosis and therapeutic responses in ovarian cancer

Background

Ferroptosis and iron-metabolism are regulated by Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in ovarian cancer (OC). Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of ferroptosis and iron-metabolism related lncRNAs (FIRLs) in OC is crucial for proposing therapeutic strategies and survival prediction.

Methods

In multi-omics data from OC patients, FIRLs were identified by calculating Pearson correlation coefficients with ferroptosis and iron-metabolism related genes (FIRGs). Cox-Lasso regression analysis was performed on the FIRLs to screen further the lncRNAs participating in FIRLs signature. In addition, all patients were divided into two robust risk subtypes using the FIRLs signature. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve, Kaplan–Meier analysis, decision curve analysis (DCA), Cox regression analysis and calibration curve were used to confirm the clinical benefits of FIRLs signature. Meanwhile, two nomograms were constructed to facilitate clinical application. Moreover, the potential biological functions of the signature were investigated by genes function annotation. Finally, immune microenvironment, chemotherapeutic sensitivity, and the response of PARP inhibitors were compared in different risk groups using diversiform bioinformatics algorithms.

Results

The raw data were randomized into a training set (n = 264) and a testing set (n = 110). According to Pearson coefficients between FIRGs and lncRNAs, 1075 FIRLs were screened for univariate Cox regression analysis, and then LASSO regression analysis was used to construct 8-FIRLs signature. It is worth mentioning that a variety of analytical methods indicated excellent predictive performance for overall survival (OS) of FIRLs signature (p < 0.05). The multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that FIRLs signature was an independent prognostic factor for OS (p < 0.05). Moreover, significant differences in the abundance of immune cells, immune-related pathways, and drug response were excavated in different risk subtypes (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

The FIRLs signature can independently predict overall survival and therapeutic effect in OC patients.
