Trends in polysaccharide-based hydrogels and their role in enhancing the bioavailability and bioactivity of phytocompounds

Over the years, polysaccharides such as chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, k-carrageenan, xanthan gum, carboxymethyl cellulose, pectin, and starch, alone or in combination with proteins and/or synthetic polymers, have been used to engineer an extensive portfolio of hydrogels with remarkable features. The application of polysaccharide-based hydrogels has the potential to alleviate challenges related to bioavailability, solubility, stability, and targeted delivery of phytocompounds, contributing to the development of innovative and efficient drug delivery systems and functional food formulations. This review highlights the current knowledge acquired on the preparation, features and applications of polysaccharide/phytocompounds hydrogel-based hybrid systems in wound management, drug delivery, functional foods, and food industry. The structural, functional, and biological requirements of polysaccharides and phytocompounds on the overall performance of such hybrid systems, and their impact on the application domains are also discussed.

A fingerprint-like supramolecular-assembled Ag3PO4/polydopamine/g-C3N4 heterojunction nanocomposite for enhanced solar-driven oxygen evolution in vivo

Biocompatible photocatalytic water-splitting systems are promising for tissue self-oxygenation. Herein, a structure-function dual biomimetic fingerprint-like silver phosphate/polydopamine/graphitic carbon nitride (Ag3PO4/PDA/g-C3N4) heterojunction nanocomposite is proposed for enhanced solar-driven oxygen (O2) evolution in vivo in situ. Briefly, a porous nitrogen-defected g-C3N4 nanovoile (CN) is synthesized as the base. Dopamine molecules are controllably inserted into the CN interlayer, forming PDA spacers (4.28 nm) through self-polymerization-induced supramolecular-assembly. Ag3PO4 nanoparticles are then in situ deposited to create Ag3PO4/PDA/CN. The fingerprint-like structure of PDA/CN enlarges the layer spacing, thereby accelerating mass transfer and increasing reaction sites. The PDA spacer roles as excellent light harvester, electronic-ionic conductor, and redox pair through conformational changes, resulting in tailored electronic band structure, optimized carrier behavior, and reduced electrochemical impedance. In physiological conditions, Ag3PO4/PDA/CN exhibits O2 evolution rate of 45.35 μmol⋅g-1⋅h-1, 9-fold of bulk g-C3N4. The biocompatibility and in vivo oxygen supply effectiveness for biomedical applications have been verified in animal models.

Plant-Derived Coumarins: A Narrative Review Of Their Structural And Biomedical Diversity

Plant-derived coumarin (PDC) is a naturally occurring heterocyclic backbone that belongs to the benzopyrone family. PDC and its based products are characterized by low toxicity and high distribution in a variety of herbal treatments that have numerous therapeutic potentials. These include anticoagulants, antibacterials, anti-inflammatory agents, anticancer agents, antioxidants, and others. So, it may be appropriate to investigate the qualities and potential bioactivities of PDCs. This article provides an overview of the biomedical potentials, availability, and clinical use possibilities of PDCs, with a focus on their important modes of action, using information on various pharmacological qualities discovered. The data used in this study came from published research between 2015 and 2023. We reviewed a selection of databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, during that period. In conclusion, because of their abundance in medicinal plants, the clinical biochemistry attributes of PDCs are currently of interest. In a variety of medical specialties, PDCs serve a useful role as therapeutic agents.

Biomedical applications of stimuli-responsive "smart" interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels

In recent years, owing to the ongoing advancements in polymer materials, hydrogels have found increasing applications in the biomedical domain, notably in the realm of stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels. Nonetheless, conventional single-network stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels frequently exhibit deficiencies, including low mechanical strength, limited biocompatibility, and extended response times. In response, researchers have addressed these challenges by introducing a second network to create stimuli-responsive "smart" Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) hydrogels. The mechanical strength of the material can be significantly improved due to the topological entanglement and physical interactions within the interpenetrating structure. Simultaneously, combining different network structures enhances the biocompatibility and stimulus responsiveness of the gel, endowing it with unique properties such as cell adhesion, conductivity, hemostasis/antioxidation, and color-changing capabilities. This article primarily aims to elucidate the stimulus-inducing factors in stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels, the impact of the gels on cell behaviors and their biomedical application range. Additionally, we also offer an in-depth exposition of their categorization, mechanisms, performance characteristics, and related aspects. This review furnishes a comprehensive assessment and outlook for the advancement of stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels within the biomedical arena. We believe that, as the biomedical field increasingly demands novel materials featuring improved mechanical properties, robust biocompatibility, and heightened stimulus responsiveness, stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels will hold substantial promise for wide-ranging applications in this domain.

Current status of development and biomedical applications of peptide-based antimicrobial hydrogels

Microbial contamination poses a serious threat to human life and health. Through the intersection of material science and modern medicine, advanced bionic hydrogels have shown great potential for biomedical applications due to their unique bioactivity and ability to mimic the extracellular matrix environment. In particular, as a promising antimicrobial material, the synthesis and practical biomedical applications of peptide-based antimicrobial hydrogels have drawn increasing research interest. The synergistic effect of peptides and hydrogels facilitate the controlled release of antimicrobial agents and mitigation of their biotoxicity while achieving antimicrobial effects and protecting the active agents from degradation. This review reports on the progress and trends of researches in the last five years and provides a brief outlook, aiming to provide theoretical background on peptide-based antimicrobial hydrogels and make suggestions for future related work.

Innovations in hydrogel-based manufacturing: A comprehensive review of direct ink writing technique for biomedical applications

Direct ink writing (DIW) stands as a pioneering additive manufacturing technique that holds transformative potential in the field of hydrogel fabrication. This innovative approach allows for the precise deposition of hydrogel inks layer by layer, creating complex three-dimensional structures with tailored shapes, sizes, and functionalities. By harnessing the versatility of hydrogels, DIW opens up possibilities for applications spanning from tissue engineering to soft robotics and wearable devices. This comprehensive review investigates DIW as applied to hydrogels and its multifaceted applications. The paper introduces a diverse range of printing techniques while providing a thorough exploration of DIW for hydrogel-based printing. The investigation aims to explain the progress made, challenges faced, and potential trajectories that lie ahead for DIW in hydrogel-based manufacturing. The fundamental principles underlying DIW are carefully examined, specifically focusing on rheological attributes and printing parameters, prompting a comprehensive survey of the wide variety of hydrogel materials. These encompass both natural and synthetic variations, all of which can be effectively harnessed for this purpose. Furthermore, the review explores the latest applications of DIW for hydrogels in biomedical areas, with a primary focus on tissue engineering, wound dressing, and drug delivery systems. The document not only consolidates the existing state of DIW within the context of hydrogel-based manufacturing but also charts potential avenues for further research and innovative breakthroughs.

Structure-activity relationships of bioactive polysaccharides extracted from macroalgae towards biomedical application: A review

Macroalgae are valuable and structurally diverse sources of bioactive compounds among marine resources. The cell walls of macroalgae are rich in polysaccharides which exhibit a wide range of biological activities, such as anticoagulant, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antitumor activities. Macroalgae polysaccharides (MPs) have been recognized as one of the most promising candidates in the biomedical field. However, the structure-activity relationships of bioactive polysaccharides extracted from macroalgae are complex and influenced by various factors. A clear understanding of these relationships is indeed critical in developing effective biomedical applications with MPs. In line with these challenges and knowledge gaps, this paper summarized the structural characteristics of marine MPs from different sources and relevant functional and bioactive properties and particularly highlighted those essential effects of the structure-bioactivity relationships presented in biomedical applications. This review not only focused on elucidating a particular action mechanism of MPs, but also intended to identify a novel or potential application of these valued compounds in the biomedical field in terms of their structural characteristics. In the last, the challenges and prospects of MPs in structure-bioactivity elucidation were further discussed and predicted, where they were emphasized on exploring modern biotechnology approaches potentially applied to expand their promising biomedical applications.

Exploring nanocellulose frontiers: A comprehensive review of its extraction, properties, and pioneering applications in the automotive and biomedical industries

Material is an inseparable entity for humans to serve different purposes. However, synthetic polymers represent a major category of anthropogenic pollutants with detrimental impacts on natural ecosystems. This escalating environmental issue is characterized by the accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic materials, which pose serious threats to the health of our planet's ecosystem. Cellulose is becoming a focal point for many researchers due to its high availability. It has been used to serve various purposes. Recent scientific advancements have unveiled innovative prospects for the utilization of nanocellulose within the area of advanced science. This comprehensive review investigates deeply into the field of nanocellulose, explaining the methodologies employed in separating nanocellulose from cellulose. It also explains upon two intricately examined applications that emphasize the pivotal role of nanocellulose in nanocomposites. The initial instance pertains to the automotive sector, encompassing cutting-edge applications in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, while the second exemplifies the use of nanocellulose in the field of biomedical applications like otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, and wound dressing. This review aims to provide comprehensive information starting from the definitions, identifying the sources of the nanocellulose and its extraction, and ending with the recent applications in the emerging field such as energy storage and biomedical applications.

Citric acid cross-linked β-cyclodextrins: A review of preparation and environmental/biomedical application

The β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) are biocompatible macrocyclic candidates for the preparation of various composites with enhanced functions. While nontoxic and biodegradable citric acid (CA) is the favorite crosslinking agent for fabricating hierarchical advanced structures. The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on CA can serve as "structural bridges" and enhance the solubility of β-CD. Leading to the construction of CA cross-linked β-CD with marvelous complicated structures and targeted functions. Here, we directly categorized the grafted composite materials into two main types such as organic and inorganic materials. Particularly, some representative composite materials are listed and analyzed in detail according to their preparation, advantages of unique characteristics, as well as the possible applications in environmental and biomedical fields such as adsorption of pollutants, sensors, and biomedical applications.

Protein/polysaccharide-based hydrogels loaded probiotic-mediated therapeutic systems: A review

The natural characteristics of protein/polysaccharide-based hydrogels, as a potential drug delivery platform, have attracted extensive attention. Probiotics have attracted renewed interest in drug research because of their beneficial effects on host health. The idea of using probiotics loaded on protein/polysaccharide-based hydrogels as potential drugs to treat different diseases has been put forward and shows great prospects. Based on this, in this review, we highlight the design strategy of hydrogels loaded probiotic-mediated therapy systems and review the potential diseases that have been proved to be treatable in the laboratory, including promoting wound healing and improving intestinal health and vaginal health, and discuss the challenges existing in the current design.

Dialdehyde carbohydrates - Advanced functional materials for biomedical applications

Dialdehyde carbohydrates (DCs) have found applications in a wide range of biomedical field due to their great versatility, biocompatibility/biodegradability, biological properties, and controllable chemical/physical characteristics. The presence of dialdehyde groups in carbohydrate structure allows cross-linking of DCs to form versatile architectures serving as interesting matrices for biomedical applications (e.g., drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine). Recently, DCs have noticeably contributed to the development of diverse physical forms of advanced functional biomaterials i.e., bulk architectures (hydrogels, films/coatings, or scaffolds) and nano/-micro formulations. We underline here the current scientific knowledge on DCs, and demonstrate their potential and newly developed biomedical applications. Specifically, an update on the synthesis approach and functional/bioactive attributes is provided, and the selected in vitro/in vivo studies are reviewed comprehensively as examples of the latest progress in the field. Moreover, safety concerns, challenges, and perspectives towards the application of DCs are deliberated.

Microneedle-based cell delivery and cell sampling for biomedical applications

Cell-based therapeutics are novel therapeutic strategies that can potentially treat many presently incurable diseases through novel mechanisms of action. Cell therapies may benefit from the ease, safety, and efficacy of administering therapeutic cells. Despite considerable recent technological and biological advances, several barriers remain to the clinical translation and commercialization of cell-based therapies, including low patient compliance, personal handling inconvenience, poor biosafety, and limited biocompatibility. Microneedles (MNs) are emerging as a promising biomedical device option for improved cell delivery with little invasion, pain-free administration, and simplicity of disposal. MNs have shown considerable promise in treating a wide range of diseases and present the potential to improve cell-based therapies. In this review, we first summarized the latest advances in the various types of MNs developed for cell delivery and cell sampling. Emphasis was given to the design and fabrication of various types of MNs based on their structures and materials. Then we focus on the recent biomedical applications status of MNs-mediated cell delivery and sampling, including tissue repair (wound healing, heart repair, and endothelial repair), cancer treatment, diabetes therapy, cell sampling, and other applications. Finally, the current status of clinical application, potential perspectives, and the challenges for clinical translation are also highlighted.

Biohybrid magnetic microrobots: An intriguing and promising platform in biomedicine

Biohybrid magnetic microrobots (BMMs) have emerged as an exciting class of microrobots and have been considered as a promising platform in biomedicine. Many microorganisms and body's own cells show intriguing properties, such as morphological characteristics, biosafety, and taxis abilities (e.g., chemotaxis, aerotaxis), which have made them attractive for the fabrication of microrobots. For remote controllability and sustainable actuation, magnetic components are usually incorporated onto these biological entities, and other functionalized non-biological components (e.g., therapeutic agents) are also included for specific applications. This review highlights the latest developments in BMMs with a focus on their biomedical applications. It starts by introducing the fundamental understanding of the propulsion system at the microscale in a magnetically driven manner, followed by a summary of diverse BMMs based on different microorganisms and body's own cells along with their relevant applications. Finally, the review discusses how BMMs contribute to the advancements of microrobots, the current challenges of using BMMs in practical clinical settings, and the future perspectives of this exciting field. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biohybrid magnetic microrobots (BMMs), composed of biological entities and functional parts, hold great potential and serve as a novel and promising platform for biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent advancements in BMMs for biomedical applications, mainly focused on the representative propulsion modalities in a magnetically propelled manner and diverse designs of BMMs based on different biological entities, including microorganisms and body's own cells. We hope this review can provide ideas for the future design, development, and innovation of micro/nanorobots in the field of biomedicine.

Organic functional substance engineered living materials for biomedical applications

Modifying living materials with organic functional substances (OFS) is a convenient and effective strategy to control and monitor the transport, engraftment, and secretion processes in living organisms. OFSs, including small organic molecules and organic polymers, own the merit of design flexibility, satisfying performance, and excellent biocompatibility, which allow for living materials functionalization to realize real-time sensing, controlled drug release, enhanced biocompatibility, accurate diagnosis, and precise treatment. In this review, we discuss the different principles of OFS modification on living materials and demonstrate the applications of engineered living materials in health monitoring, drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue regeneration.

Recent advances in bacterial cellulose-based antibacterial composites for infected wound therapy

Wound infection arising from pathogenic bacteria brought serious trouble to the patient and medical system. Among various wound dressings that are effective in killing pathogenic bacteria, antimicrobial composites based on bacterial cellulose (BC) are becoming the most popular materials due to their success in eliminating pathogenic bacteria, preventing wound infection, and promoting wound healing. However, as an extracellular natural polymer, BC is not inherently antimicrobial, which means that it must be combined with other antimicrobials to be effective against pathogens. BC has many advantages over other polymers, including nano-structure, significant moisture retention, non-adhesion to the wound surface, which has made it superior to other biopolymers. This review introduces the recent advances in BC-based composites for the treatment of wound infection, including the classification and preparation methods of composites, the mechanism of wound treatment, and commercial application. Moreover, their wound therapy applications include hydrogel dressing, surgical sutures, wound healing bandages, and patches are summarized in detail. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of BC-based antibacterial composites for the treatment of infected wounds are discussed.

Advances in Intelligent Stimuli-Responsive Microneedle for Biomedical Applications

Microneedles (MNs) are a new type of drug delivery method that can be regarded as an alternative to traditional transdermal drug delivery systems. Recently, MNs have attracted widespread attention for their advantages of effectiveness, safety, and painlessness. However, the functionality of traditional MNs is too monotonous and limits their application. To improve the efficiency of disease treatment and diagnosis by combining the advantages of MNs, the concept of intelligent stimulus-responsive MNs is proposed. Intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs can exhibit unique biomedical functions according to the internal and external environment changes. This review discusses the classification and principles of intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs, such as magnet, temperature, light, electricity, reactive oxygen species, pH, glucose, and protein. This review also highlights examples of intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs for biomedical applications, such as on-demand drug delivery, tissue repair, bioimaging, detection and monitoring, and photothermal therapy. These intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs offer the advantages of high biocompatibility, targeted therapy, selective detection, and precision treatment. Finally, the prospects and challenges for the application of intelligent stimuli-responsive MNs are discussed.

Advances in preparation and application of antibacterial hydrogels

Bacterial infections, especially those caused by drug-resistant bacteria, have seriously threatened human life and health. There is urgent to develop new antibacterial agents to reduce the problem of antibiotics. Biomedical materials with good antimicrobial properties have been widely used in antibacterial applications. Among them, hydrogels have become the focus of research in the field of biomedical materials due to their unique three-dimensional network structure, high hydrophilicity, and good biocompatibility. In this review, the latest research progresses about hydrogels in recent years were summarized, mainly including the preparation methods of hydrogels and their antibacterial applications. According to their different antibacterial mechanisms, several representative antibacterial hydrogels were introduced, such as antibiotics loaded hydrogels, antibiotic-free hydrogels including metal-based hydrogels, antibacterial peptide and antibacterial polymers, stimuli-responsive smart hydrogels, and light-mediated hydrogels. In addition, we also discussed the applications and challenges of antibacterial hydrogels in biomedicine, which are expected to provide new directions and ideas for the application of hydrogels in clinical antibacterial therapy.

Metal/metal oxide-carbohydrate polymers framework for industrial and biological applications: Current advancements and future directions

Recently, the development and consumption of metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites (M/MOCPNs) are withdrawing significant attention because of their numerous salient features. Metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites are being used as environmentally friendly alternatives for traditional metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites exhibit variable properties that make them excellent prospects for a variety of biological and industrial uses. In metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites, carbohydrate polymers bind with metallic atoms and ions using coordination bonding in which heteroatoms of polar functional groups behave as adsorption centers. Metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites are widely used in woundhealing, additional biological uses and drug delivery, heavy ions removal or metal decontamination, and dye removal. The present review article features the collection of some major biological and industrial applications of metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites. The binding affinity of carbohydrate polymers with metal atoms and ions in metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites has also been described.

Evolution of biomimetic ECM scaffolds from decellularized tissue matrix for tissue engineering: A comprehensive review

Tissue engineering is essentially a technique for imitating nature. Natural tissues are made up of three parts: extracellular matrix (ECM), signaling systems, and cells. Therefore, biomimetic ECM scaffold is one of the best candidates for tissue engineering scaffolds. Among the many scaffold materials of biomimetic ECM structure, decellularized ECM scaffolds (dECMs) obtained from natural ECM after acellular treatment stand out because of their inherent natural components and microenvironment. First, an overview of the family of dECMs is provided. The principle, mechanism, advances, and shortfalls of various decellularization technologies, including physical, chemical, and biochemical methods are then critically discussed. Subsequently, a comprehensive review is provided on recent advances in the versatile applications of dECMs including but not limited to decellularized small intestinal submucosa, dermal matrix, amniotic matrix, tendon, vessel, bladder, heart valves. And detailed examples are also drawn from scientific research and practical work. Furthermore, we outline the underlying development directions of dECMs from the perspective that tissue engineering scaffolds play an important role as an important foothold and fulcrum at the intersection of materials and medicine. As scaffolds that have already found diverse applications, dECMs will continue to present both challenges and exciting opportunities for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

Preparation of lignin-based hydrogels, their properties and applications

Polymers obtained from biomass are a concerning alternative to petro-based polymers because of their low cost of manufacturing, biocompatibility, ecofriendly and biodegradability. Lignin as the second richest and the only polyaromatics bio-polymer in plant which has been most studied for the numerous applications in different fields. But, in the past decade, the exploitation of lignin for the preparation of new smart materials with improved properties has been broadly sought, because lignin valorization plays one of the primary challenging issues of the pulp and paper industry and lignocellulosic biorefinery. Although, well suited chemical structure of lignin comprises of many functional hydrophilic and active groups, such as phenolic hydroxyls, carboxyls and methoxyls, which provides a great potential to be applied in the preparation of biodegradable hydrogels. In this review, lignin hydrogel is covered with preparation strategies, properties and applications. This review reports some important properties, such as mechanical, adhesive, self-healing, conductive, antibacterial and antifreezing properties were then discussed. Furthermore, herein also reviewed the current applications of lignin hydrogel, including dye adsorption, smart materials for stimuli sensitive, wearable electronics for biomedical applications and flexible supercapacitors. Overall, this review covers recent progresses regarding lignin-based hydrogel and constitutes a timely review of this promising material.

Biobased natural deep eutectic system as versatile solvents: Structure, interaction and advanced applications

The increasing emphasis on the development of green replacements to traditional organic solvents and ionic liquids (ILs) can be attributed to the rising concerns over human health and detrimental impacts of conventional solvents towards the environment. A new generation of solvents inspired by nature and extracted from plant bioresources has evolved over the last few years, and are referred to as natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES). NADES are mixtures of natural constituents like sugars, polyalcohols, sugar-based alcohols, amino acids and organic acids. Interest in NADES has exponentially grown over the last eight years, which is evident from an upsurge in the number of research projects undertaken. NADES are highly biocompatible as they can be biosynthesized and metabolized by nearly all living organisms. These solvents pose several noteworthy advantages, such as easy synthesis, tuneable physico-chemical properties, low toxicity, high biodegradability, solute sustainability and stabilization and low melting point. Research on the applicability of NADES in diverse areas is gaining momentum, which includes as - media for chemical and enzymatic reactions; extraction media for essential oils; anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent; extraction of bioactive composites; as chromatographic media; preservatives for labile compounds and in drug synthesis. This review gives a complete overview of the properties, biodegradability and toxicity of NADES which we propose can assist in further knowledge generation on their significance in biological systems and usage in green and sustainable chemistry. Information on applications of NADES in biomedical, therapeutic and pharma-biotechnology fields is also highlighted in the current article along with the recent progress and future perspectives in novel applications of NADES.

Alginate: Microbial production, functionalization, and biomedical applications

Alginates are natural polysaccharides widely participating in food, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications due to their excellent gelling capacity. Their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability further extend their application to biomedical fields. The low consistency in molecular weight and composition of algae-based alginates may limit their performance in advanced biomedical applications. It makes microbial alginate production more attractive due to its potential for customizing alginate molecules with stable characteristics. Production costs remain the primary factor limiting the commercialization of microbial alginates. However, carbon-rich wastes from sugar, dairy, and biodiesel industries may serve as potential substitutes for pure sugars for microbial alginate production to reduce substrate costs. Fermentation parameter control and genetic engineering strategies may further improve the production efficiency and customize the molecular composition of microbial alginates. To meet the specific needs of biomedical applications, alginates may need functionalization, such as functional group modifications and crosslinking treatments, to achieve enhanced mechanical properties and biochemical activities. The development of alginate-based composites incorporated with other polysaccharides, gelatin, and bioactive factors can integrate the advantages of each component to meet multiple requirements in wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. This review provided a comprehensive insight into the sustainable production of high-value microbial alginates. It also discussed recent advances in alginate modification strategies and alginate-based composites for representative biomedical applications.

DNA-directed assembly of nanomaterials and their biomedical applications

In the past decades, DNA has been widely used in the field of nanostructures due to its unique programmable properties. Besides being used to form its own diverse structures such as the assembly of DNA origami, DNA can also be used for the assembly of nanostructures with other materials. In this review, different strategies for the functionalization of DNA on nanoparticle surfaces are listed, and the roles of DNA in the assembly of nanostructures as well as the influencing factors are discussed. Finally, the biomedical applications of DNA-assembled nanostructures were summarized. This review provided new insight into the application of DNA in nanostructure assembly.

Green synthesis of nano silver-embedded carboxymethyl starch waste/poly vinyl alcohol hydrogel with photothermal sterilization and pH-responsive behavior

Bacterial wound infections remain a significant health issue of great concern. Hence, there is a need to develop a novel material with antibacterial properties and smart functions. In this study, the effects of silver nanoparticles content (AgNPs) on properties of photothermal and pH-responsive nanocomposite hydrogels were investigated. The nanocomposite hydrogel samples were prepared using cassava starch waste modified by carboxymethylation (CMS), and mixed with poly vinly alcohol (PVA) and tannic acid (TA). The presence of AgNPs in the hydrogel samples enhanced antibacterial activities and photothermal conversion ability. The use of as-prepared hydrogel using 200 mM silver nitrate (H-AgNPs-200) combined with near infrared (NIR) radiation produced 100 % antibacterial efficiency for Escherichia coli (E.coli) and 98.2 % for Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus). Furthermore, the H-AgNPs-200 also provided the highest storage modulus at 87.9 kPa. The obtained nanocomposite hydrogel was shown to exhibit pH-responsive release of TA. Under NIR radiation, higher release of TA at different pH was observed. The cytotoxicity study indicated that the nanocomposite hydrogels had good biocompatibility. Hence, the development of nanocomposite hydrogel-based CMS from cassava starch waste/PVA/AgNPs is a promising and sustainable approach where agro-waste product is used as the base material for medical application in wound dressing.

Green and facile synthesis of lignin/HKUST-1 as a novel hybrid biopolymer metal-organic-framework for a pH-controlled drug release system

This manuscript describes the synthesis and characterization of a hybrid polymer/HKUST-1 composite for oral drug delivery. A green, one-pot approach was employed to synthesize the modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composite using alkali lignin as a novel pH-responsive biopolymer carrier for the simulated oral delivery system. Several analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the chemical and crystalline structure of HKUST-1 and L/HKUST-1 composite. The drug loading capacity and drug-controlled release behavior of HKUST-1 and L/HKUST-1 were examined using ibuprofen (IBU) as an oral drug model. L/HKUST-1 composite demonstrated a pH-controlled drug release behavior by advancing the drug stability at low pHs such as the gastric medium and controlling drug release in the pH range of 6.8-7.4, similar to intestinal pH. The results suggest that the L/HKUST-1 composite is a promising candidate for oral medication delivery.

Application of plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles in drug delivery

Exosomes are one type of extracellular vesicles with size ranging from 30 to 150 nm, which are involved in intercellular communication by transporting specific proteins, nucleic acids, and low molecular weight metabolites. The size and competence of exosomes to transfer biological materials to recipient cells have made them suitable for biomedical use. Therefore, exosomes have been studied as drug delivery systems for various diseases due to low immunogenicity, preferred tumor homing, innate and acquired targetability, and stability. They are secreted by almost all cells from multivesicular endosomes and retrieved in all body fluids including bile, saliva, blood, lymph, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, milk, and etc. Plants' organs also secrete exosomes (Plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (PELNs)) which have been considered as an economical and affordable source of production. PELNs are pharmacologically rich in active molecules because of owning unique compositional and morphological features and they can be used as natural nano-carrier for transporting exogenous molecules. In this review, the bio-component and the applications of PELNs as drug delivery systems in neural disorders, tumor-targeted delivery, and gene delivery have been reviewed in different plants such as aloe, turmeric, ginger, lemon, grapefruit, grape, and strawberry.

Nanoarchitectonics of nitric oxide releasing supramolecular structures for enhanced antibacterial efficacy under visible light irradiation

Light-controlled therapies offer a promising strategy to prevent and suppress infections caused by numerous bacterial pathogens. Excitation of exogenously supplied photosensitizers (PS) at specific wavelengths elicits levels of reactive oxygen intermediates toxic to bacteria. Porphyrin-based supramolecular nanostructure frameworks (SNF) are effective PS with unique physicochemical properties that have led to their widespread use in photomedicine. Herein, we developed a nitric oxide (NO) releasing, biocompatible, and stable porphyrin-based SNF (SNF-NO), which was achieved through a confined noncovalent self-assembly process based on π-π stacking. Characterization of the SNFs via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed the formation of three-dimensional, well-defined octahedral structures. These SNF-NO were shown to exhibit a red shift due to the noncovalent self-assembly of porphyrins, which also show extended light absorption to broadly cover the entire visible light spectrum to enhance photodynamic therapy (PDT). Under visible light irradiation (46 J cm^-2), the SNF generates high yields of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) radicals, hydroxyl radicals (HO), superoxide radicals (O₂), and peroxynitrite (ONOO^-) radicals that have shown potential to enhance antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) against Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli). The resulting SNFs also exhibit significant biofilm dispersion and a decrease in biomass production. The combination of robust photosensitizer SNFs with nitric oxide-releasing capabilities is dynamic in its ability to target pathogenic infections while remaining nontoxic to mammalian cells. The engineered SNFs have enormous potential for treating and managing microbial infections.

Nanoengineering of biohybrid micro/nanobots for programmed biomedical applications

Biohybrid micro/nanobots have emerged as an innovative resource to be employed in the biomedical field due to their biocompatible and biodegradable properties. These are tiny nanomaterial-based integrated structures engineered in a way that they can move autonomously and perform the programmed tasks efficiently even at hard-to-reach organ/tissues/cellular sites. The biohybrid micro/nanobots can either be cell/bacterial/enzyme-based or may mimic the properties of an active molecule. It holds the potential to change the landscape in various areas of biomedical including early diagnosis of disease, therapeutics, imaging, or precision surgery. The propulsion mechanism of the biohybrid micro/nanobots can be both fuel-based and fuel-free, but the most effective and easiest way to propel these micro/nanobots is via enzymes. Micro/nanobots possess the feature to adsorb/functionalize chemicals or drugs at their surfaces thus offering the scope of delivering drugs at the targeted locations. They also have shown immense potential in intracellular sensing of biomolecules and molecular events. Moreover, with recent progress in the material development and processing is required for enhanced activity and robustness the fabrication is done via various advanced techniques to avoid self-degradation and cause cellular toxicity during autonomous movement in biological medium. In this review, various approaches of design, architecture, and performance of such micro/nanobots have been illustrated along with their potential applications in controlled cargo release, therapeutics, intracellular sensing, and bioimaging. Furthermore, it is also foregrounding their advancement offering an insight into their future scopes, opportunities, and challenges involved in advanced biomedical applications.

Sustainable approaches on industrial food wastes to value-added products - A review on extraction methods, characterizations, and its biomedical applications

The concept of zero waste discharge has been gaining importance in recent years towards attaining a sustainable environment. Fruit processing industries generate millions of tons of byproducts like fruit peels and seeds, and their disposal poses an environmental threat. The concept of extracting value-added bioactive compounds from bio-waste is an excellent opportunity to mitigate environmental issues. To date, significant research has been carried out on the extraction of essential biomolecules, particularly polysaccharides from waste generated by fruit processing industries. In this review article, we aim to summarize the different extraction methodologies, characterization methods, and biomedical applications of polysaccharides extracted from seeds and peels of different fruit sources. The review also focuses on the general scheme of extraction of polysaccharides from fruit waste with special emphasis on various methods used in extraction. Also, the various types of polysaccharides obtained from fruit processing industrial wastes are explained in consonance with the important techniques related to the structural elucidation of polysaccharides obtained from seed and peel waste. The use of seed polysaccharides as pharmaceutical excipients and the application of peel polysaccharides possessing biological activities are also elaborated.

A critical review on the bio-mediated green synthesis and multiple applications of magnesium oxide nanoparticles

Nowadays, advancements in nanotechnology have efficiently solved many global problems, such as environmental pollution, climate change, and infectious diseases. Nano-scaled materials have played a central role in this evolution. Chemical synthesis of nanomaterials, however, required hazardous chemicals, unsafe, eco-unfriendly, and cost-ineffective, calling for green synthesis methods. Here, we review the green synthesis of MgO nanoparticles and their applications in biochemical, environmental remediation, catalysis, and energy production. Green MgO nanoparticles can be safely produced using biomolecules extracted from plants, fungus, bacteria, algae, and lichens. They exhibited fascinating and unique properties in morphology, surface area, particle size, and stabilization. Green MgO nanoparticles served as excellent antimicrobial agents, adsorbents, colorimetric sensors, and had enormous potential in biomedical therapies against cancers, oxidants, diseases, and the sensing detection of dopamine. In addition, green MgO nanoparticles are of great interests in plant pathogens, phytoremediation, plant cell and organ culture, and seed germination in the agricultural sector. This review also highlighted recent advances in using green MgO nanoparticles as nanocatalysts, nano-fertilizers, and nano-pesticides. Thanks to many emerging applications, green MgO nanoparticles can become a promising platform for future studies.

The clinical significance of 4D printing

4D printing is the next step on from 3D printing involving the fourth dimension of 'time'. The programmed 4D-printed objects are capable of changing their shape in response to external stimuli, such as light, heat, or water, differentiating them from 3D-printed static objects. This technique promises new possibilities for cancer treatment, drug delivery, stent development, and tissue engineering. In this review, we focus on the development of 4D-printed objects, their clinical use, and the possibility of 5D printing, which could revolutionize the fields of biomedical engineering and drug delivery.

Highly porous bio-glass scaffolds fabricated by polyurethane template method with hydrothermal treatment for tissue engineering uses

Objectives

Bioglass scaffolds, which contain a significant percentage of porosity for tissue engineering purposes, have low strength. For increasing the strength and efficiency of such structures for use in tissue engineering, fabrication of hierarchical meso/macro-porous bioglass scaffolds, developing their mechanical strength by hydrothermal treatment and adjusting pH method, and achieving the appropriate mesopore size for loading large biomolecules, were considered in this study.

Materials and Methods

Mesoporous bioglass (MBG) powders were synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a surfactant, with different amounts of calcium sources to obtain the appropriate size of the mesoporous scaffolds. Then MBG scaffolds were fabricated by a polyurethane foam templating method, and for increasing scaffold strength hydrothermal treatment (90 ^°C, for 5 days) and adjustment pH (pH=9) method was used to obtain hierarchical meso/macro-porous structures. The sample characterization was done by Simultaneous thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning electron microscopy, small and wide-angle X-ray powder diffractions, transmission electron microscopy, and analysis of nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. The mechanical strength of scaffolds was also determined.

Results

The MBG scaffolds based on 80.28 (wt.) % SiO₂- 17.89 (wt.) % CaO- 1.81 (wt.) % P₂O₅ presented interconnected large pores and pores in the range of 100-150 μm and 6-18 nm, respectively and 0.4 MPa compressive strength.

Conclusion

The total pore volume and specific surface area were obtained from the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller theory, 0.709 cm³ g^-1 and 213.83 m² g^-1, respectively. These findings could be considered in bone-cartilage tissue engineering.

Three-dimensional printing of smart constructs using stimuli-responsive biomaterials: A future direction of precision medicine

Three-dimensional (3D) printing, which is a valuable technique for the fabrication of tissue-engineered constructs and biomedical devices with complex architectures, has brought about considerable progress in regenerative medicine, drug delivery, and diagnosis of diseases. However, because of the static and inanimate properties of conventional 3D-printed structures, it is difficult to use them in therapies for active and precise medicine, such as improved tissue regeneration, targeted or controlled drug delivery, and advanced pathophysiological monitoring. The integration of stimuli-responsive biomaterials into 3D printing provides a potential strategy for designing and building smart constructs that exhibit programmed functions and controllable changes in properties in response to exogenous and autogenous stimuli. These features make 3D-printed smart constructs the next generation of tissue-engineered products. In this review, we introduce the prevalent 3D printing techniques (with an emphasis on the differences between 3D printing and bioprinting, and biomaterials and bioink), the working principle of each technique, and the advantages of using 3D printing for the fabrication of smart constructs. Stimuli-responsive biomaterials that are widely used for 3D printing of smart constructs are categorized, followed by a summary of their applications in tissue regeneration, drug delivery, and biosensors. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of 3D-printed smart constructs are discussed.

Recombinant protein polymers as carriers of chemotherapeutic agents

Chemotherapy is the standard of care for the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases. However, its use is associated with severe toxicity and resistance arising mainly due to non-specificity, resulting in disease progression. The advancement in recombinant technology has led to the synthesis of genetically engineered protein polymers like Elastin-like polypeptide (ELP), Silk-like polypeptide (SLP), hybrid protein polymers with specific sequences to impart precisely controlled properties and to target proteins that have provided satisfactory preclinical outcomes. Such protein polymers have been exploited for the formulation and delivery of chemotherapeutics for biomedical applications. The use of such polymers has not only solved the limitation of conventional chemotherapy but has also improved the therapeutic index of typical drug delivery systems. This review, therefore, summarizes the development of such advanced recombinant protein polymers designed to deliver chemotherapeutics and also discusses the key challenges associated with their current usage and their application in the future.

A Model of Normality Inspired Deep Learning Framework for Depression Relapse Prediction Using Audiovisual Data

BACKGROUND

Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is one of the most common mental illnesses. According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people in the world are affected. A first depressive episode can be solved by a spontaneous remission within 6 to 12 months. It has been shown that depression affects speech production and facial expressions. Although numerous studies are proposed in the literature for depression recognition using audiovisual cues, depression relapse using audiovisual cues has not been studied in the literature.

METHOD

In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based approach for depression recognition and depression relapse prediction using audiovisual data. For more versatility and reusability, the proposed approach is based on a Model of Normality inspired framework where we define depression relapse by the closeness of the audiovisual patterns of a subject after a symptom-free period to the audiovisual patterns of depressed subjects. A model of Normality is an anomaly detection distance-based approach that computes a distance of normality between the deep audiovisual encoding of a test sample and a learned representation from audiovisual encodings of anomaly-free data.

RESULTS

The proposed approach shows a very promising results with an accuracy of 87.4% and a F1-score of 82.3% for relapse/depression prediction using a Leave-One-Subject-Out training strategy on the DAIC-Woz dataset.

CONCLUSION

The proposed model of normality-based framework is accurate in detecting depression and in predicting depression relapse. A prospective monitoring system is proposed for assisting depressed patients. The proposed framework is easily extensible and others modalities will be integrated in future works.

Promoted mechanical properties and functionalities via Ta-tailored Ti-Au-Cr shape memory alloys towards biomedical applications

In view of the urgent demands of shape memory alloys (SMAs) for biomedical applications due to the world population aging issue, the mechanical properties and functionalities of the biocompatible Ti-Au-Cr-based SMAs, which are tailored by Ta additions, have been developed in this study. The quaternary SMAs were successfully manufactured by physical metallurgy techniques and their mechanical properties and functionalities were examined. In the continuous tensile tests, it was found that the correlation between the yielding strength and phase stability followed a typical trend of mechanical behavior of SMAs, showing the lowest yielding strength at the metastable β-parent phase. Functional mappings between the alloy strength and elongation revealed that compared to the Ta-free specimen, the ductility was promoted 50% while the strength remained intact through the 4 at.% introduction of Ta. Slight shape recovery was observed in the cyclic loading-unloading tensile tests during the unloading process and the highest shape recovery was found in the Ti-4 at.% Au-5 at.% Cr-4 at.% Ta specimen. This indicates that the 4 at.% Ta tailored Ti-Au-Cr SMAs could be a promising material for biomedical applications.

Prospects of ultrasonically extracted food bioactives in the field of non-invasive biomedical applications - A review

Foods incorporated with bioactive compounds, called nutraceuticals, can fight or prevent or alleviate diseases. The contribution of nutraceuticals or phytochemicals to non-invasive biomedical applications is increasing. Although there are many traditional methods for extracting bioactive compounds or secondary metabolites, these processes come with many disadvantages like lower yield, longer process time, high energy consumption, more usage of solvent, yielding low active principles with low efficacy against diseases, poor quality, poor mass transfer, higher extraction temperature, etc. However, nullifying all these disadvantages of a non-thermal technology, ultrasound has played a significant role in delivering them with higher yield and improved bio-efficacy. The physical and chemical effects of acoustic cavitation are the crux of the output. This review paper primarily discusses the ultrasound-assisted extraction (USAE) of bioactives in providing non-invasive prevention and cure to diseases and bodily dysfunctions in human and animal models. The outputs of non-invasive bioactive components in terms of yield and the clinical efficacy in either in vitro or in vitro conditions are discussed in detail. The non-invasive biomedical applications of USAE bioactives providing anticancer, antioxidant, cardiovascular health, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial benefits are analyzed in-depth and appraised. This review additionally highlights the improved performance of USAE compounds against conventionally extracted compounds. In addition, an exhaustive analysis is performed on the role and application of the food bioactives in vivo and in vitro systems, mainly for promoting these efficient USAE bioactives in non-invasive biomedical applications. Also, the review explores the recovery of bioactives from the less explored food sources like cactus pear fruit, ash gourd, sweet granadilla, basil, kokum, baobab, and the food processing industrial wastes like peel, pomace, propolis, wine residues, bran, etc., which is rare in literature.

Applications of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles in Theranostics

Nanotechnology sculptures the current scenario of science and technology. The word nano refers 'small' which ranges from 10 to 100 nm in size. Silver and gold nanoparticles can be synthesized at nanoscale and have unique biological properties like antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activity. In this mini review, we shall discuss the various applications of silver and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the field of therapy, imaging, biomedical devices and in cancer diagnosis. The usage of silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) in dentistry and dental implants, therapeutic abilities like wound dressings, silver impregnated catheters, ventricular drainage catheters, combating orthopedic infections, and osteointegration will be elaborated. Gold nanoparticles in recent years have garnered large importance in bio medical applications. They are being used in diagnosis and have recently seen a surge in therapeutics. In this mini review, we shall see about the various applications of AuNP and AgNP, and highlight their evolution in theranostics.

Nano/Microcarriers in Drug Delivery: Moving the Timeline to Contemporary

Treatment of various diseases, especially cancer treatment, includes the potential use of different types of nanoparticles and nanostructures as drug carriers. However, searching for the less toxic and more efficient therapy requires further progress wherein recent developments in medicine increasingly include the use of various advanced nanostructures. Their more successful application might be achieved by leveling imbalances between the potentiality of different nanostructures and demands required for their safe use. Biocompatibility, biodegradability, prolonged circulation time and enhanced accumulation and uptake by cells are some of the key preconditions for their usage in efficient drug delivery. Thanks to their greatly tunable functions, they are major building blocks for manufacturing novel materials. Nevertheless, given that their toxicity is questionable their practical application is challenging. Hereof, before entering in the sphere of human consumption it is of critical importance to perform more studies regarding their toxicity and drug distribution. This review emphasizes some recent advances in the field of nanomedicine employing different kinds of conventionally used nanoparticles as well as novel nanoparticles and nanostructures. Special emphasis is placed on micro/nanomotors (MNMs) discussing their opportunities, limitations, challenges and possible applications in drug delivery and outlining some perspectives in nanomedicine area.

An overview of polyallylamine applications in gene delivery

A chief objective of gene transportation studies is to manipulate clinically accepted carriers that can be utilized to combat incurable diseases. Despite various strategies, efficiency and application of these vectors have been hindered, owing to different obstacles. Polyallylamine (PAA) is a synthetic water-soluble, weak base cationic polymer with different properties that could be administrated as an ideal candidate for biomedical applications such as gene delivery, drug delivery, or even tissue engineering. However, some intrinsic properties of this polymer limit its application. The two associated problems with the use of PAA in gene delivery are low transfection efficiency (because of low buffering capacity) and cytotoxic effects attributed to intense cationic character. Most of the strategies for structural modification of the PAA structure have focused on introducing hydrophobic groups to the polymeric backbone that target both cytotoxicity and transfection. In this perspective, we concentrate on PAA as a gene delivery vehicle and the existing approaches for modification of this cationic polymer to give insight to researchers for exploitation of PAA as an efficient carrier in biomedical applications.

Harnessing immune response using reactive oxygen Species-Generating/Eliminating inorganic biomaterials for disease treatment

With the increasing understanding of various biological functions mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the immune system, a number of studies have been designed to develop ROS-generating/eliminating strategies to selectively modulate immunogenicity for disease treatment. These strategies potentially exploit ROS-modulating inorganic biomaterials to harness host immunity to maximize the therapeutic potency by eliciting a favorable immune response. Inorganic biomaterial-guided in vivo ROS scavenging can exhibit several effects to: i) reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors, ii) induce the phenotypic transition of macrophages from inflammatory M1 to immunosuppressive M2 phase, iii) minimize the recruitment and infiltration of immune cells. and/or iv) suppress the activation of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) pathway. Inversely, ROS-generating inorganic biomaterials have been found to be capable of: i) inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD), ii) reprograming tumor-associated macrophages from M2 to M1 phenotypes, iii) activating inflammasomes to stimulate tumor immunogenicity, and/or iv) recruiting phagocytes for antimicrobial therapy. This review provides a systematic and up-to-date overview on the progress related to ROS-nanotechnology mediated immunomodulation. We highlight how the ROS-generating/eliminating inorganic biomaterials can converge with immunomodulation and ultimately elicit an effective immune response against inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and/or cancers. We expect that contents presented in this review will be beneficial for the future advancements of ROS-based nanotechnology and its potential applications in this evolving field.

Functional Xeno Nucleic Acids for Biomedical Application

Functional nucleic acids(FNAs) refer to a type of oligonucleotides with functions over the traditional genetic roles of nucleic acids, which have been widely applied in screening, sensing and imaging fields. However, the potential application of FNAs in biomedical field is still restricted by the unsatisfactory stability, biocompatibility, biodistribution and immunity of natural nucleic acids(DNA/RNA). Xeno nucleic acids(XNAs) are a kind of nucleic acid analogues with chemically modified sugar groups that possess improved biological properties, including improved biological stability, increased binding affinity, reduced immune responses, and enhanced cell penetration or tissue specificity. In the last two decades, scientists have made great progress in the research of functional xeno nucleic acids, which makes it an emerging attractive biomedical application material. In this review, we summarized the design of functional xeno nucleic acids and their applications in the biomedical field.

Microbial originated surfactants with multiple applications: a comprehensive review

Microbial synthesized surfactants are used in contaminated soil bioremediation processes and have multiple applications in various industries. These compounds minimize the negative influences in soil via absorption by detoxifying the toxic metals or compounds. Further, applications of biosurfactants are detected in treating chronic diseases or synthetic drugs alternatives in current periods. Various surfactant molecules can provide many benefits due to their diversities in structural and functional groups. These compounds showed a wide array of applications in multiple sectors such as biomedical or pharmaceutical fields. Agricultural, food processing, laundry, or other sectors. Many microbial systems or plant cells are utilized in biosurfactant production as confirmed by biochemical analysis of genome sequencing tools. Biosurfactant compounds can alter drug transport across the cell membrane. Different nature of biosurfactant compounds exhibited their antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral activities, or antiadhesive coating agents used in reduction of many hospital infections. These distinct properties of biosurfactants pushed their broad spectrum applications in biomedical, agriculture sectors and bioremediation tasks. Additionally, many strains of fungi or bacteria are utilized for biosurfactant synthesis involved in the detoxification of soil/other components of the environment. In these reviews, authors explained various biosurfactants molecules and their mode of actions. Also, applications of microbial originated biosurfactants along with their process technologies are described. Future perspectives of biosurfactants and their scope are also critically explained so that this review paper can be used as a showcase for production and application of biosurfactants.

Ultrasound in cellulose-based hydrogel for biomedical use: From extraction to preparation

As the most abundant natural polymer on the pl anet, cellulose has a wide range of applications in the biomedical field. Cellulose-based hydrogels further expand the applications of this class of biomaterials. However, a number of publications and technical reports are mainly about traditional preparation methods. Sonochemistry offers a simple and green route to material synthesis with the biomedical application of ultrasound. The tiny acoustic bubbles, produced by the propagating sound wave, enclose an incredible facility where matter interact among at energy as high as 13 eV to spark extraordinary chemical reactions. Ultrasonication not only improves the efficiency of cellulose extraction from raw materials, but also influences the hydrogel preparation process. The primary objective of this article is to review the literature concerning the biomedical cellulose-based hydrogel prepared via sonochemistry and application of ultrasound for hydrogel. An innovated category of recent generations of hydrogel materials prepared via ultrasound was also presented in some details.

Chitosan-based hydrogel crosslinked through an aza-Michael addition catalyzed by boric acid

Polysaccharide-based hydrogels are particularly attractive materials for biomedical applications. However, their use is restricted due to their brittleness and poor mechanical properties. Here, to overcome such limitations, we report an original, green, simple, and efficient strategy to synthesize a polysaccharide-based hydrogel of chitosan (Cht) and a vinyl-functionalized PVA (PVA-MA), a non-toxic synthetic polymer that is widely known to improve the mechanical properties and stability of materials containing polysaccharides. The hydrogel was crosslinked through an aza-Michael addition among the amino groups of Cht with the vinyl moieties of PVA-MA catalyzed by boric acid (B(OH)₃), an eco-friendly inorganic compound. Characterization analyses revealed that the prepared hydrogel has a porous-like morphology, an outstanding liquid uptake capacity (>665%), and improved stability in a physiological fluid for long periods. In summary, this original and simple strategy showed to be efficient in the synthesis of hydrogels with attractive properties for the biomedical field application.

Recent development of metal-organic framework nanocomposites for biomedical applications

Albeit metal-organic framework (MOF) composites have been extensively explored, reducing the size and dimensions of various contents within the composition, to the nanoscale regime, has recently presented unique opportunities for enhanced properties with the formation of MOF-based nanocomposites. Many distinctive strategies have been used to fabricate these nanocomposites such as through the introduction of nanoparticles (NPs) into a MOF precursor solution or vice versa to achieve a core-shell or heterostructure configuration. As such, MOF-based nanocomposites offer seemingly limitless possibilities and promising solutions for the vast range of applications across biomedical disciplines especially for improving in vivo implementation. In this review, we focus on the recent development of MOF-based nanocomposites, outline their classification according to the type of integrations (NPs, coating materials, and different MOF-derived nanocomposites), and direct special attention towards the various approaches and strategies employed to construct these nanocomposites for their prospective utilization in biomedical applications including biomimetic enzymes and photo, chemo, sonodynamic, starvation and hyperthermia therapies. Lastly, our work aims to highlight the exciting potential as well as the challenges of MOF-based nanocomposites to help guide future research as well as to contribute to the progress of MOF-based nanotechnology in biomedicine.

Partially purified actinomycetes compounds enhance the intracellular damages in multi-drug resistant P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae

Based on the excellent nutrient level, the current study was focused on isolation and anti-bacterial activity of the actinomycetes from marine mangrove soil samples. As result, 10 different strains of actinomycetes strains were identified on actinomycetes isolation agar plates. The identified strains were shown with white, clear, uncontaminated well matured spore producing ability. Based on the initial observation, the isolated colonies were actinomycetes. The partially extracted crude compound shown excellent anti-bacterial activity against P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae with 15 mm and 13 mm zone of inhibitions were observed at 500 μL concentrations. The minimum inhibition concentration result was also confirmed the 500 μL concentration against both the tested concentration with high inhibition rate. Then, the intracellular damages, decreased cell growth of the crude actinomycetes extract treated bacterial strains were clearly observed by confocal laser scanning electron microscope. The extracellular damages of bacterial cell wall and shape of the both the pathogens were clearly shown by scanning electron microscope. Therefore, all the results were clearly supported to the partially extracted crude compound and it has excellent anti-bacterial activity against tested multi drug resistant bacteria.

Synergistic effect of sericin and keratin in gelatin based nanofibers for in vitro applications

Protein-based nanomaterials are gaining growing interest in biomedical field. The present paper evaluates the physico-chemical properties of electrospun nanofibers resulting from the combination of gelatin with keratin (from wool) and sericin (from silk) to validate their use for in vitro interaction studies. We demonstrated that that presence of sericin influences the fiber morphology at macroscopic level - i.e., wide diameter distributions by SEM and image analysis - with effects on chemical - i.e., a decrease of hydrogen bonds of NH groups verified by infrared spectroscopy - and thermal behavior of electrospun nanofibers, in comparison with gelatin-based ones. Moreover, we verified that sericin, in combination with keratin macromolecules, can amplify the biochemical signal of gelatin, improving the in-vitro stability of gelatin-based nanofibers. In vitro results confirm a synergistic effect of sericin and keratin on human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hMSC) proliferation - increase over 50% respect to other types - associated to the enhancement of in vitro stability directly ascribable to the peculiar physical interaction among the proteins. These findings suggest the use of sericin/keratin/gelatin enriched electrospun fibers as nanostructured platforms for interface tissue engineering.

A state-of-the-art review of the fabrication and characteristics of titanium and its alloys for biomedical applications

Abstract

Commercially pure titanium and titanium alloys have been among the most commonly used materials for biomedical applications since the 1950s. Due to the excellent mechanical tribological properties, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties of titanium, it is getting much attention as a biomaterial for implants. Furthermore, titanium promotes osseointegration without any additional adhesives by physically bonding with the living bone at the implant site. These properties are crucial for producing high-strength metallic alloys for biomedical applications. Titanium alloys are manufactured into the three types of α, β, and α + β. The scientific and clinical understanding of titanium and its potential applications, especially in the biomedical field, are still in the early stages. This review aims to establish a credible platform for the current and future roles of titanium in biomedicine. We first explore the developmental history of titanium. Then, we review the recent advancement of the utility of titanium in diverse biomedical areas, its functional properties, mechanisms of biocompatibility, host tissue responses, and various relevant antimicrobial strategies. Future research will be directed toward advanced manufacturing technologies, such as powder-based additive manufacturing, electron beam melting and laser melting deposition, as well as analyzing the effects of alloying elements on the biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties of titanium. Moreover, the role of titania nanotubes in regenerative medicine and nanomedicine applications, such as localized drug delivery system, immunomodulatory agents, antibacterial agents, and hemocompatibility, is investigated, and the paper concludes with the future outlook of titanium alloys as biomaterials.
