Abstract
Studies in cows have reported that ovulation, steroidogenesis and angiogenesis are affected by stress and consequently fertility decreases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ACTH administration during the preovulatory period on the expression of growth factors (CD-31, PDGF-A, PDGF-B, VEGFA-164, VEGFA-164b, VEGF-R1 and VEGF-R2) associated with the angiogenic process by immunohistochemistry in cows (n = 14). Results evidenced the expression of these growth factors in theca and granulosa cells from antral, atretic and dominant preovulatory follicles of ACTH-treated cows, suggesting that, under stress conditions, their expression continues to be required. VEGFA-164, VEGF-R1 and VEGF-R2 expression was greater in theca cells of dominant preovulatory follicles of the ACTH-treated group than in those of the control group. CD-31 protein expression was lower in the dominant preovulatory follicles of the ACTH-treated group than in those of the control group. PDGF-A and PDGF-B expression did not differ between groups, either in granulosa or in theca cells. These results suggest that VEGFA-164, its receptors and CD-31 are actors in the normal cycle of the ovaries and could have greater pathophysiological importance in the altered angiogenic process and other events that occur during anovulation and stress conditions. This dysregulation reinforces the importance of the angiogenic process in the pathophysiology of cystic ovarian disease in cows. This is the first report on the expression and localization of components of the VEGF and PDGF systems and CD-31 in cells from dominant preovulatory follicles after ACTH administration.

Abstract
Objective Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease that delays the healing process, including the interruption of the processes of angiogenesis and vasculogenesis. The etiology of most angiogenic-related diseases, such as diabetes complications, includes the presence of hypoxia caused by declined vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF) and CD-31. d-limonene, one of the main constituents of Citrus limon, is considered to have angiogenic, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the exact mechanism of this process remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the potential of C. limon as a medication for diabetic ulceration. Methods A total of 30 Wistar rats (Rattus novergicus) induced with DM and traumatic ulcers on the lower lip mucosa were divided into six groups-three each for control and treatment groups. Control groups were treated with CMC 5% gel, and treatment groups were administered with C. limon peel essential oil gel. The expression of VEGF and CD-31 was observed on days 5, 7, and 9. Immunohistochemical examinations were performed with the monoclonal antibodies anti-VEGF and anti-CD-31. ANOVA was conducted to analyze the differences between the groups (p < 0.05). Result An increase in VEGF and CD-31 expression in the treatment group was observed compared with that of the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion Citrus limon peel essential oil gel increased VEGF and CD-31 expression during the healing process of traumatic ulcers in diabetes-afflicted Wistar rats.

Abstract
Background We have previously reported that the free fatty acid extract (FFAE) of krill oil (KO) significantly inhibits the proliferation and migration, and induces apoptosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. This study aimed to investigate the in vivo efficacy of various doses of KO supplementation on the inhibition of CRC tumour growth, molecular markers of proliferation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its downstream molecular signalling. Methods Male Balb/c mice were randomly divided into four groups with five in each group. The control (untreated) group received standard chow diet; and other three groups received KO supplementation at 5%, 10%, and 15% of their daily dietary intake respectively for three weeks before and after the orthotopic implantation of CT-26 CRC cells in their caecum. The expression of cell proliferation marker Ki-67 and angiogenesis marker CD-31 were assessed by immunohistochemistry. The expression of EGFR, phosphorylated EGFR (pEGFR), protein kinase B (AKT), pAKT, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2), pERK1/2, cleaved caspase-7, cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), and DNA/RNA damage were determined by western blot. Results KO supplementation reduced the CRC tumour growth in a dose-dependent manner; with 15% of KO being the most effective in reduction of tumour weight and volume (68.5% and 68.3% respectively, P < 0.001), inhibition of cell proliferation by 69.9% (P < 0.001) and microvessel density by 72.7% (P < 0.001). The suppressive effects of KO on EGFR and its downstream signalling, ERK1/2 and AKT, were consistent with our previous in vitro observations. Furthermore, KO exhibited pro-apoptotic effects on tumour cells as indicated by an increase in the expression of cleaved PARP by 3.9-fold and caspase-7 by 8.9-fold. Conclusions This study has demonstrated that KO supplementation reduces CRC tumour growth by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and blood vessel formation and inducing apoptosis of tumour cells. These anti-cancer effects are associated with the downregulation of the EGFR signalling pathway and activation of caspase-7, PARP cleavage, and DNA/RNA damage. Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to compare subepithelial angiogenesis developing within the perimatrix of the cholesteatoma between pediatric and adult patients. Methods Sixty-one patients who underwent mastoidectomy for the first intent because of chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma between 1993 and 2013 and from whom appropriate tissue specimens were taken were included in the study. The patients were classified in the pediatric patient group if they were under the age of 18 years and the adult patient group if they were 18 years and older. Immunohistochemical staining for CD-31 was performed on new sections taken during surgery and sections prepared from archived tissues in paraffin blocks. Results were compared between the groups. Results A total of 61 patients, of whom 25 were pediatric and 36 were adult patients, were included in the study. The mean CD-31 immunopositive microvessel rates were 8.8 (3-15) and 6.61 (2-14) for the pediatric and adult patient groups, respectively. The difference between the groups was statistically significant (p=0.037). Correlation analysis showed a statistically significant negative correlation between the CD-31 immunopositive microvessel rates and age (p=0.036). Conclusion Subepithelial angiogenesis developing within the perimatrix of the cholesteatoma of the pediatric patients was more expressed than that of the adult patients.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3 (VEGFR3) and CD31 and assess their associations with grade, stage and survival in patients with renal cell cancer (RCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Our study included 224 consecutive patients who received treatment during the years 1985-1995 in Tampere Finland but had not been treated with modern anti-angiogenesis drugs. All tumor samples were re-classified and investigated using immunohistological techniques. Data were collected from patient records and the Finnish Cancer Registry. RESULTS In total, 54.2% and 98.2% of the tumor samples tested positive for VEGFR3 and CD31 expression, respectively. CD31 expression levels were classified into two groups according to the median level revealing that its high expression was nearly significantly associated with low tumor stage (p=0.069). In an age- and gender-adjusted analysis, low expression of CD31 associated with poorer survival. Grade 3 and grade 4 tumors had significantly higher mortality rates compared to those of grades 1-2 (hazard ratio (HR)=4.91; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.12-20.4; p=0.029 for grade 3 and HR=9.31; 95% CI=2.23-38.8; p=0.002 for grade 4). In addition, stage 2, 3 and 4 tumors revealed that they possessed significantly higher mortality hazard ratios compared to those of stage 1 tumors (HR=2.62; 95% CI=1.27-5.41; p=0.009 for stage 2, HR=4.37;95% CI=2.29-8.3; p<0.001 for stage 3 and HR 13.8; 95% CI=7.18-26.7; p<0.001 for stage 4). CONCLUSION High CD31 expression associated significantly with better survival and VEGFR3 had no association with survival. Both higher tumor grade and stage were associated with a decreased survival time.
