Abstract
Even with optimally fitted hearing aids, many individuals with hearing impairment struggle to hear in situations with difficult listening conditions. Active Communication Education (ACE) is an interactive group rehabilitation program aimed at helping people with hearing loss communicate more effectively using communication strategies to better cope with everyday life. To increase accessibility and allow more people to benefit from the ACE program, a modified individualized version was created. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of providing the Swedish Individualized Active Communication Education (I-ACE) program via an online platform and to explore hearing impaired persons' experiences with the program. For five weeks, ten participants completed the Swedish I-ACE through an online platform. The participants were assigned a new chapter to complete each week and later received individual feedback on their work via the platform. The participants were asked to complete an evaluation form regarding the content and their experiences during and after completing the I-ACE. They were later interviewed to provide more detailed information on their experiences with the program. The program completion rate was 80 %. Participants found the I-ACE program to be informative and relevant but somewhat repetitive. However, only a few participants thought of the repetitiveness as negative. Few participants reported difficulties using the platform. This study indicated that it is feasible to provide the I-ACE program via an online platform and that the content of the program is informative, relevant, and comprehensible. Further research evaluating the effects of the I-ACE is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current research lacks examination of the relationship between different subtypes of hearing loss (HL) and cognitive decline (CD). Additionally, the co-effects of HL and depression on CD remain unexplored. This study aims to investigate the relationship between HL, various types of HL, and CD, as well as the combined impact of HL and depression on CD. METHODS Data from a total of 5218 older adults who participated in the most recent three waves of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) (2011-2012, 2014, and 2018) were included. HL was assessed through self-report and objective measures. CD was defined as a decrease in MMSE score of≥3 between any two survey periods for older adults. Cox proportional hazards model was applied to analyzed. RESULTS Among Chinese older adults, bilateral HL (HR = 1.202, 95%CI = 1.093-1.322, P < 0.001), onset of HL after the age of 40 (HR = 1.155, 95%CI = 1.056-1.264, P = 0.002), and chronic HL (HR = 1.143, 95%CI = 1.040-1.255, P = 0.005) posed a greater risk. HL (HR = 1.146, 95%CI = 1.048-1.254, P = 0.003) and depression (HR = 1.162, 95%CI = 1.038-1.301, P = 0.009) were independently or jointly associated with CD. Participants who were simultaneously exposed to both HL and depression experienced the highest risk of CD (HR = 1.314, 95%CI = 1.117-1.545, P = 0.001). LIMITATIONS Given the observational design, unidentified confounding variables may still be present, such as whether to wear a hearing aid. CONCLUSION This study emphasizes the high risk of specific types of HL for CD and the importance of implementing health interventions that address both physiological and psychological aspects to enhance cognitive function and prevent CD in older adults.

Abstract
AIMS We aimed to evaluate the association of occupational noise with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components, and to assess the potential role of miRNAs in occupational noise-associated MetS. METHODS A total of 854 participants were enrolled in our study. Cumulative noise exposure (CNE) was estimated in conjunction with workplace noise test records and research participants' employment histories. Logistic regression models adjusted for potential confounders were used to assess the association of CNE and miRNAs with MetS and its components. RESULTS We observed linear positive dose-response associations between occupational noise exposure and the prevalence of MetS (OR: 1.031; 95 % CI: 1.008, 1.055). And linear and nonlinear relationship were also found for the association of occupational noise exposure with high blood pressure (OR: 1.024; 95 % CI: 1.007, 1.041) and reduced high-density lipoprotein (OR: 1.051; 95 % CI: 1.031, 1.072), respectively. MiR-200a-3p, miR-92a-3p and miR-21-5p were inversely associated with CNE, or the prevalence of MetS and its components (all P < 0.05). However, we did not find any statistically significant mediation effect of miRNAs in the associations of CNE with MetS. Furthermore, the prevalence of bilateral hearing loss in high-frequency increased (OR: 1.036; 95 % CI: 1.008, 1.067) with CNE level rising, and participants with bilateral hearing loss in high-frequency had a significantly higher risk of MetS (OR: 1.727; 95 % CI: 1.048, 2.819). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that occupational noise exposure is associated with MetS and its components, and the role of miRNAs in noise-induced increasing MetS risk needs to be confirmed in future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence of new hearing losses in patients with acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) and to start to evaluate its diagnostic value for the differentiation between peripheral and central causes. DESIGN We performed a cross-sectional prospective study in AVS patients presenting to our Emergency Department (ED) from February 2015 to November 2020. All patients received an MRI, Head-impulse test, Nystagmus test and Test of skew ('HINTS'), caloric testing and a pure-tone audiometry. RESULTS We assessed 71 AVS patients, 17 of whom had a central and 54 a peripheral cause of dizziness. 12.7% had an objective hearing loss. 'HINTS' had an accuracy of 78.9% to diagnose stroke, whereas 'HINTS' plus audiometry 73.2%. 'HINTS' sensitivity was 82.4% and specificity 77.8% compared to 'HINTS' plus audiometry showing a sensitivity of 82.4% and specificity of 70.4%. The four patients with stroke and minor stroke had all central 'HINTS'. 55% of the patients did not perceive their new unilateral hearing loss. CONCLUSIONS We found that almost one-eighth of the AVS patients had a new onset of hearing loss and only half had self-reported it. 'HINTS' plus audiometry proved to be less accurate to diagnose a central cause than 'HINTS' alone. Audiometry offered little diagnostic accuracy to detect strokes in the ED but might be useful to objectify a new hearing loss that was underestimated in the acute phase. Complete hearing loss should be considered a red flag, as three in four patients suffered from a central cause.

Abstract
Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is one of the most common diseases in otolaryngology. Its etiology remains unknown. Furthermore, there is only a low level of evidence for the efficacy of established treatment modalities. In addition to systemic glucocorticoids, intratympanic corticosteroid treatment (ICT) has become increasingly important for treatment of ISSNHL. Different application strategies and treatment regimens have been described; however, uniform standards do not yet exist. ICT may be used for primary treatment as well as salvage therapy. Current data from meta-analyses show no benefit of intratympanic versus systemic primary therapy for sudden hearing loss (moderate evidence) but suggest a benefit of intratympanic secondary treatment over no treatment or placebo (high effect size, low evidence). Regarding combination of systemic and local glucocorticoid therapy in primary treatment of hearing loss, there may be a small benefit over systemic treatment alone (low effect size, low evidence).

Abstract
Between 1 to 2 of every 1,000 children are born deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and, of those, 30-50% have additional disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Most measures assessing ASD characteristics rely on some degree of behavioral response to sound (e.g., responding to name, listening response), and may not be appropriate for use with children who are DHH. Further, ASD specific measures do not provide information on a child's functional abilities across developmental domains. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis comparing mean T-scores on a standardized multidimensional measure, the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition, Parent Rating Scale (BASC-3 PRS), across three groups matched for age and sex: children who are DHH and diagnosed with ASD (DHH + ASD; n = 16); children who are DHH without ASD (DHH-ASD; n = 16); and children who are typically hearing with ASD (H + ASD; n = 16). Analyses revealed statistically significant differences across scales of Attention Problems, Atypicality, Withdrawal, Behavioral Symptoms Index, Social Skills, Leadership, Functional Communication, Activities of Daily Living, Adaptive Skills, Autism Probability Indices, and Developmental Social Disorders. Pairwise comparisons showed DHH + ASD and H + ASD mean T-scores were statistically similar and distinct from DHH-ASD mean T-scores on all these scales except for Withdrawal, Leadership, Functional Communication, and Activities of Daily Living, where pairwise comparisons varied. The findings add to the literature on ASD and DHH children and call for further exploration of the BASC-3 as a tool for both evaluation of ASD and the development of individualized treatment plans in this unique population.

Abstract
Mitochondrial transfer RNA mutation is one of the most important causes of hereditary hearing loss in humans. Mitochondrial transfer RNASer (UCN) gene is another hot spot for mutations associated with non-syndromic hearing loss, besides the 12S ribosomal RNA gene. In this study, we assessed the clinical phenotype and the molecular characteristics of two Chinese families with non-syndromic hearing loss. Mutational analysis revealed that 7445A > G and 7510T > C mutations in the mitochondrial transfer RNASer (UCN) gene were the molecular etiology of Family 1 and Family 2, respectively. However, the clinical and genetic characteristics of the two families carrying the above mutations in the transfer RNASer (UCN) gene exhibited a variable expression of hearing loss and an incomplete penetrance. Sequencing analysis of the complete mitochondrial genome showed the presence of transfer RNATrp 5568A > G and NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase chain 4 11696G > A mutations in Family 1. The mitochondrial haplotype analysis showed that the two families belonged to Asian D4 and M80'D haplotypes, respectively, and no pathogenic variations were found in the nuclear genes. To our knowledge, our study is the first to report 7445A > G and 7510T > C mutations in the mitochondrial transfer RNASer (UCN) gene, in multi-generation non-syndromic hearing loss pedigrees from China. Our study suggests that 5568A > G and 11696G > A mutations may enhance the penetrance of hearing loss in Chinese Family 1, while mitochondrial haplotypes and known nuclear genes may not be modifiers for the phenotypic expression of 7445A > G and 7510T > C mutations in these Chinese families.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to provide an updated European narrative review spanning the last decade, focusing on the cost-effectiveness of cochlear implants (CIs) for adults with severe to profound post-lingual hearing loss. METHODS This review encompasses both prospective and retrospective approaches, as well as cross-sectional and longitudinal trials conducted on CIs in adults. All studies related to European countries (Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and Poland) were conducted in English and were published between 2012 and June 2023. RESULTS Nine studies were included in the analysis. The patients' ages ranged from 18 years to over 67 years, with sample sizes ranging from 20 to 100 patients; two of these studies were focused on single-sided deafness in adults. The Markov model was identified as the most commonly utilized analysis method. CONCLUSIONS This review identified a general consensus on CI cost-effectiveness, despite substantial variability among countries in factors such as observation time horizons, cost-effectiveness thresholds, methods of cost collection, discount rates, CI eligibility criteria and country-specific health systems. Generally, CIs yield positive societal benefits for working-age individuals, potentially less for seniors. Early unilateral CI enhances cost-effectiveness, highlighting the importance of prompt candidate identification. A consistent undersupply of CIs relative to the percentage of potential recipients emerged across countries. Therefore, further investigation into subcategories such as single-sided deafness is warranted, along with country-specific cost analyses. Emphasizing the significance of detailed information on health systems and associated costs and benefits is crucial for facilitating comparisons across different settings.

Abstract
Meniere disease is a complex inner ear disorder with significant familial aggregation. A differential prevalence of familial MD (FMD) has been reported, being 9-10% in Europeans compared to 6% in East Asians. A broad genetic heterogeneity in FMD has been described, OTOG being the most common mutated gene, with a compound heterozygous recessive inheritance. We hypothesize that an OTOG-related founder effect may explain the higher prevalence of FMD in the European population. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the allele frequency (AF) and distribution of OTOG rare variants across different populations. For this purpose, the coding regions with high constraint (low density of rare variants) were retrieved in the OTOG coding sequence in Non-Finnish European (NFE).. Missense variants (AF < 0.01) were selected from a 100 FMD patient cohort, and their population AF was annotated using gnomAD v2.1. A linkage analysis was performed, and odds ratios were calculated to compare AF between NFE and other populations. Thirteen rare missense variants were observed in 13 FMD patients, with 2 variants (rs61978648 and rs61736002) shared by 5 individuals and another variant (rs117315845) shared by two individuals. The results confirm the observed enrichment of OTOG rare missense variants in FMD. Furthermore, eight variants were enriched in the NFE population, and six of them were in constrained regions. Structural modeling predicts five missense variants that could alter the otogelin stability. We conclude that several variants reported in FMD are in constraint regions, and they may have a founder effect and explain the burden of FMD in the European population.

Abstract
The case study explores COVID-19 vaccination connection to tinnitus and hyperacusis, considering its onset and exacerbation post vaccination. The subject is a 47-year-old woman with a history of bilateral tinnitus, and her hearing history was tracked from 2014 to 2023. An intense episode of tinnitus occurred in 2021, distinct from previous experiences post COVID-19 vaccination, second dose. Symptoms manifested as sudden onset of hyperacusis, pronounced "roar" type tinnitus, and a sudden decline in hearing. Audiometric results showed reduce thresholds in low frequencies and lower speech scores in the left ear. This escalation significantly affects speech understanding in group conditions and noisy environments. There was a gradual improvement in tinnitus and hyperacusis severity, but the subject has a greater problem with speech understanding. The subject's journey involved visits to specialists, multiple testing including neuroimaging, naturopath consultations, and anxiety medication. It emphasizes the importance of healthcare practitioners recognizing and documenting these issues and need for timely multidisciplinary intervention and support. Further research is necessary to better understand the relationship between COVID-19, vaccination, and auditory symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health care providers must be aware of the choices in aural rehabilitation methods and assessment procedures available presently to those with hearing impairment in order to facilitate early identification and intervention and ensure quality of care to those hearing impaired individuals. The referrals from the medical fraternities for the audiological services are not uniform across India. Part of reason may be that awareness about the roles of and responsibilities of audiologist's is poor among medical practitioners. In some regions of India medical practitioners may be only grossly be aware of audiologists per se. They may not know enough to refer all individuals with hearing or balance disorders for the required audiological services. AIM To evaluate changes in pre survey and post survey after education intervention specifically planned for medical practitioners in the state of Sikkim, India. Education intervention included awareness about hearing impairment and its assessment and management by audiologists. METHOD A pre and post survey comparison research design with purposive convenient sampling technique was applied. Participants were medical practitioners working in geographical area of Sikkim at the time of the study. Inspection of demographic data of respondents showed that they were in their age range of 24 and 60 years and with work experience ranging 1-40 years. Participants were invited for an awareness talk which included, information about hearing loss, early identification and early intervention, tests and management of hearing loss in different age groups, need for hearing aids/cochlear implants, auditory training, and the role of an audiologist in the management of hearing loss and ways to prevent hearing loss. A pre and post awareness program responses were collected from all the participants using a customized questionnaire tool. RESULTS Respondents exhibited, in the pre-survey questionnaire, lack of awareness in many aspects of audiology, including assessing hearing impairment, diagnosing hearing loss, and the role of an audiologist. There was an overall, statistically significant difference in the level of performance on the pre-awareness and post-awareness responses. CONCLUSION Following an awareness campaign among the medical professionals in Sikkim, there was a considerable change in their level of awareness of hearing impairment, its assessment, and management by audiologists. The reach of the awareness campaign was significant as around 70% of subjects showed significant change in their knowledge and attitude towards hearing impairment, its management.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evidence regarding audiovestibular adverse events post COVID-19 vaccination to date has been inconclusive regarding a potential association. This study aimed to determine if there was an increase in audiovestibular events following COVID-19 vaccination in South-eastern Australia during January 2021-March 2023. METHODS A multi-data source approach was applied. First, a retrospective observational analysis of spontaneous reports of audiovestibular events to a statewide vaccine safety surveillance service, SAEFVIC. Second, a self-controlled case series analysis using general practice data collected via the POpulation Level Analysis and Reporting (POLAR) tool. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to demonstrate an increase in general practice presentations of vertigo following mRNA vaccines (RI = 1.40, P <.001), and tinnitus following both the Vaxzevria® adenovirus vector and mRNA vaccines (RI = 2.25, P <.001 and 1.53, P <.001 respectively). There was no increase in hearing loss following any COVID-19 vaccinations. Our study, however, was unable to account for the potential of concurrent COVID-19 infections, which literature has indicated to be associated with audiovestibular events. Healthcare providers and vaccinees should be alert to potential audiovestibular complaints after COVID-19 vaccination. Our analysis highlights the importance of using large real-world datasets to gather reliable evidence for public health decision making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite numerous studies that have explored the association between individual antioxidants or specific combinations and the risk of hearing loss, there is lack of information regarding the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) and hearing loss. The conflicting results on this association further highlight the need for more research in this area. This study aims to investigate the association between overall dietary antioxidant intake and the risk of hearing loss among Iranian adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited 3443 adult participants aged between 19 and 67 years (with an average age of 41.4 years ± 8.8) who were employed at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Participants underwent dietary assessment using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The hearing status of each participant was evaluated by a licensed audiologist in a soundproof room, using diagnostic audiometry that adhered to American National Standards specifications and followed standard audiometric clinical procedures. The dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) was calculated using the Ferric Reducing-Antioxidant Power (FRAP) values. RESULTS 43.6% of male participants had hearing loss, while 26.8% among female participants. After accounting for various confounding factors, no significant association was observed between higher levels of dTAC and reduced odds of hearing loss in the overall population. However, among men under the age of 40, higher levels of dTAC were associated with decreased odds of hearing loss, even after adjusting for several covariates (OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.31-1.02, Ptrend = 0.02). This relationship was not evident in men over 40 years of age or among women. CONCLUSION The study found an inverse relationship between higher antioxidant intake in the diet and lower odds of hearing loss, specifically among men who were 40 years old or younger. However, this relationship was not observed in the overall population or among women. Additional prospective studies are necessary to validate these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with Turner syndrome (TS, ORPHA 881) experience barriers in communication throughout life as they navigate both early conductive, and progressive sensorineural hearing loss amid other healthcare needs. Hearing loss is self-identified as one of the largest unmet healthcare needs. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of treatment for hearing loss on communication confidence and quality of life measures for individuals with TS. RESEARCH DESIGN We employed a prospective cross-sectional study design that included both online survey data and audiometric data for a subset of participants. STUDY SAMPLE We recruited 179 adults with TS at the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States (TSSUS) Conference, and through a variety of regional TS organizations' social media platforms. Audiological data was collected onsite at the conference for a subset of 67 participants; 8 of which who were followed after receiving subsequent treatment with hearing aids. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS The online survey design included demographic questions, the Communication Confidence Profile (CCP), and the RAND 36-Item Health Survey 1.0. Audiometric data included tympanometry, puretone air, and puretone bone conduction thresholds. Descriptive statistics, parametric, and non-parametric tests were used to analyze both survey and audiometric data. RESULTS 74% of participants had a self-reported diagnosis of hearing loss, of which 61% were previously recommended amplification. Only 38% of participants reported using hearing aids. For those participants who wore hearing aids, Total CCP Score, 'Confidence in Ability to Hear Under Various Conditions', and 'Energy/Vitality' metrics were significantly greater than those with untreated hearing loss warranting a hearing aid. Collectively, Total CCP Score and 'Confidence in Ability to Hear Under Various Conditions' increased significantly when participants were fit with hearing aids. CONCLUSION The results support previous data where hearing loss is a self-identified healthcare concern among women with Turner syndrome, yet many fail to receive appropriate hearing evaluation or treatment. Additionally, the use of hearing aids may improve communication confidence and quality of life in women with Turner syndrome. Furthermore, this study confirms the need for long-term audiological care and monitoring in women with Turner syndrome.

Abstract
Hearing loss is a common disability in infants that significantly impacts their cognitive, language, and literacy development. This study aimed to systematically assess the risk factors for the early identification and intervention in infant hearing loss. Databases were searched for meta-analyses of observational studies until November 2023. The quality assessment was performed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the certainty of the evidence. A meta-analysis identified 14 risk factors significantly associated with infant hearing loss. According to the GRADE approach, there were four factors with moderate-certainty evidence (low birth weight(LBW), congenital anomalies, craniofacial anomalies, intracranial hemorrhages), seven factors with low-certainty evidence (ototoxic medications, family history of hearing loss, mechanical ventilation > 5 days, intrauterine infection, admission to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) > 5 days, mechanical ventilation and asphyxia) and six with extremely-low-certainty evidence (very low birth weight < 1500 g (VLBW), hyperbilirubinemia, sepsis or meningitis, male sex, premature birth, small for gestational age (SGA)). Nevertheless, no significant association was found between infant hearing loss and factors such as small for gestational age (SGA), male sex, and premature birth (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The identification of these 14 interrelated risk factors can prove advantageous in clinical practice, as these findings could guide hearing screening and parental counseling. Furthermore, prospective research could be conducted to develop risk-based scoring systems based on these factors. What is Known: • Infant hearing loss is a worldwide issue. • Risk factors for this condition are debated. What is New: • This is the first meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate perinatal and postnatal risk factors for hearing loss in infants. • Intracranial hemorrhage, mechanical ventilation, and low birth weight are associated with infant hearing loss. However, no evidence of an association was found between premature birth, being small for gestational age, or male sex and hearing loss.

Abstract
Isolated malleus fractures are a rare occurrence with few reported cases in the literature. Symptoms include sudden otalgia, hearing loss, tinnitus and aural fullness. Work-up and diagnosis are based on a combination of thorough anamnesis and careful otoscopic evaluation or high-resolution computer tomography. We present two cases of isolated malleus handle fractures who were diagnosed based on a combination of pneumatic otoscopy and tympanometry. Both fractures were surgically repaired using hydroxyapatite bone cement as showcased in the supplemental video material. Post-operative audiometry showed improvement in the pure-tone-average of both patients as well as normalisation of tympanometry. Isolated malleus fracture should be suspected in cases of sudden hearing loss and tinnitus following digital manipulation of the outer ear canal together with a conductive hearing loss with a mostly high-frequent air-bone-gap and hypercompliant tympanometry with hypermobility of the tympanic membrane on pneumatic insufflation. Surgical repair of the fracture using bone cement has good hearing outcomes and leads to improvement in auditory symptoms.

Abstract
V-ATPase is an ATP hydrolysis-driven proton pump involved in the acidification of intracellular organelles and systemic acid-base homeostasis through H+ secretion in the renal collecting ducts. V-ATPase dysfunction is associated with hereditary distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA). ATP6V1B1 encodes the B1 subunit of V-ATPase that is integral to ATP hydrolysis and subsequent H+ transport. Patients with pathogenic ATP6V1B1 mutations often exhibit an early onset of sensorineural hearing loss. However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We employed morpholino oligonucleotide-mediated knockdown and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to generate Atp6v1ba-deficient (atp6v1ba-/-) zebrafish as an ortholog model for ATP6V1B1. The atp6v1ba-/- zebrafish exhibited systemic acidosis and significantly smaller otoliths compared to wild-type siblings. Moreover, deficiency in Atp6v1ba led to degeneration of inner ear hair cells, with ultrastructural changes indicative of autophagy. Our findings indicate a critical role of ATP6V1B1 in regulating lysosomal pH and autophagy in hair cells, and the results provide insights into the pathophysiology of sensorineural hearing loss in dRTA. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the atp6v1ba-/- zebrafish model is a valuable tool for further investigation into disease mechanisms and potential therapies for acidosis-related hearing impairment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study assessed the direct medical costs of the cochlear implantation pathway from the healthcare payer's perspective, in children with bilateral severe to profound hearing loss, from diagnosis to 3 years' follow-up after first implantation. We also compared costs between two populations: congenital and progressive deafness. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective costs analysis was performed for 56 children who received a cochlear implant in one French pediatric ENT center. The children had severe to profound hearing loss, and were implanted before the age of 10 years. We calculated direct medical costs in 3 phases: diagnosis to pre-implantation assessment, surgical and hospital management of implantation, and 3 years' follow-up. RESULTS Mean costs were €64,675 (range, €38,709-113,954) per child from diagnosis to 3 years after first implantation. Mean costs in congenital deafness detected on neonatal screening and on progressive deafness were respectively €65,420 and €63,930 (P=0.7). CONCLUSION The global cost was €64,675 per child from diagnosis to 3 years after first implantation. There was no difference in cost according to congenital versus progressive hearing loss.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the impact of occupational noise on hearing loss among healthcare workers using audiometry. A longitudinal study was conducted with a six-month follow-up period in a hospital with 21 participants, divided into high-noise-exposure (HNE) and low-noise-exposure (LNE) groups. Mean noise levels were higher in the HNE group (70.4 ± 4.5 dBA), and hearing loss was measured using pure-tone audiometry at baseline and follow-up. The HNE group had significantly higher mean threshold levels at frequencies of 0.25 kHz, 0.5 kHz, 4.0 kHz, and an average of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz (all p-values < 0.05) after the follow-up period. After adjusting for confounding factors, the HNE group had significantly higher hearing loss levels at 0.25 kHz, 0.5 kHz, and average frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz compared to the LNE group at the second measurement. Occupational noise levels above 65 dBA over six months were found to cause significant threshold changes at frequencies of 0.25 kHz, 0.5 kHz, and an average of 0.5-4.0 kHz. This study highlights the risk of noise-induced hearing loss among healthcare workers and emphasizes the importance of implementing effective hearing conservation programs in the workplace. Regular monitoring and assessment of noise levels and hearing ability, along with proper use of personal protective equipment, are crucial steps in mitigating the impact of occupational noise exposure on the hearing health of healthcare workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to determine how prevalent suspected cognitive impairment is in older people visiting hearing aid dispensers, and to assess whether hearing aid dispensers' judgment on cognition was in accordance with the outcome of a cognitive screening. DESIGN This observational study was conducted between April and May 2022. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Four private hearing aid retail stores in the Netherlands, where cognitive impairment was screened in people aged ≥60 years. METHODS The Mini-Cog was used for cognitive screening. In addition, hearing aid dispensers were asked to provide their professional judgment if they suspected cognitive impairment. RESULTS Of the total 239 older individuals screened, 133 were men [56%, mean age: 79 years (SD 8.6)], and 51 (21.3%) had abnormal outcomes on the Mini-Cog test. The recognition of possible cognitive impairment by the hearing aid dispensers compared to the outcome of the Mini-Cog resulted in correct predictions for 183 of the 239 individuals. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Cognitive screening in hearing-impaired older adults who visit a hearing aid dispenser suggests that cognitive impairment might be present in approximately 1 in 5 individuals. Hearing aid dispensers' response to the presence of a cognitive impairment was in 2 of 3 in accordance with an abnormal outcome on cognitive screening. To improve hearing care for people with cognitive impairment, it might be important to enhance hearing care professionals' recognition of cognitive impairment in older individuals.

Abstract
Exposure to brief, intense sound can produce profound changes in the auditory system, from the internal structure of inner hair cells to reduced synaptic connections between the auditory nerves and the inner hair cells. Moreover, noisy environments can also lead to alterations in the auditory nerve or to processing changes in the auditory midbrain, all without affecting hearing thresholds. This so-called hidden hearing loss (HHL) has been shown in tinnitus patients and has been posited to account for hearing difficulties in noisy environments. However, much of the neuronal research thus far has investigated how HHL affects the response characteristics of individual fibres in the auditory nerve, as opposed to higher stations in the auditory pathway. Human models show that the auditory nerve encodes sound stochastically. Therefore, a sufficient reduction in nerve fibres could result in lowering the sampling of the acoustic scene below the minimum rate necessary to fully encode the scene, thus reducing the efficacy of sound encoding. Here, we examine how HHL affects the responses to frequency and intensity of neurons in the inferior colliculus of rats, and the duration and firing rate of those responses. Finally, we examined how shorter stimuli are encoded less effectively by the auditory midbrain than longer stimuli, and how this could lead to a clinical test for HHL.

Abstract
Background Occupation-related noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has both negative economic and quality of life implications. The risk spine surgeons undertake in regards to NIHL during operative intervention is unknown. Governing bodies, including the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, have recommended exposure limits not to exceed 85 decibels (dB) over 8 hours. The purpose of this study is to characterize noise exposure to spine surgeons in the operating room (OR). Methods Prospective collection of intraoperative recordings of spinal surgeries (cervical and thoracic/lumbar) was undertaken. Data gathered included procedure, operative duration, presence of background music, and noise information. Noise information included maximum decibel level (MDL), Peak level (LCPeak), Equivalent continuous sound pressure level, time weighted average (TWA), dose, and projected dose. Noise measurements were compared with baseline controls with and without music (empty ORs). Results Two hundred seven noise recordings were analyzed. One hundred eighteen of those being spinal surgeries, 49 baseline recordings without music, and 40 with music. Maximum decibel level reached a maximum value of 111.5 dBA, with an average amongst surgical recordings of 103 dBA. Maximum decibel level exceeded 85 dBA in 100% of cases and was greater than 100 dBA in 78%. The maximum LCPeak recorded was 132.9 dBC with an average of 120 dBC. Furthermore, the average dose was 7.8% with an average projected dose of 26.5%. The highest dose occurred during a laminectomy at 72.9% of daily allowable noise. Maximum projected dose yielded 156% during a 3-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Conclusions Spine surgeons are routinely exposed to damaging noise levels (>85 dBA) during operative intervention. With spine surgeons often performing multiple surgeries a day, the cumulative risk of noise exposure cannot be ignored. The synergistic effects of continuous and impact noise places spine surgeons at risk for the development of occupation-related NIHL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this multicentric cross-sectional study was to collect phenotypes and clinical variability on a large sample of 244 patients enrolled in different university centers in Italy, trying to differentiate subtypes of VM. BACKGROUND VM is one of the most frequent episodic vertigo characterized by a great clinical variability for duration of attacks and accompanying symptoms. Diagnosis is based only on clinical history of episodic vertigo in 50% of cases associated with migrainous headache or photo/phonophobia. METHODS We enrolled in different university centers 244 patients affected by definite VM according to the criteria of the Barany Society between January 2022 and December 2022. An audiometric examination and a CNS MRI were performed before inclusion. Patients with low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss were not included, as well as patients with an MRI positive otherwise that for microischemic lesions. Patients were asked to characterize vestibular symptoms choosing among (multiple answers were allowed): internal vertigo, dizziness, visuo-vestibular symptoms/external vertigo; onset of vertigo and duration, neurovegetative, and cochlear accompanying symptoms (hearing loss, tinnitus, and fullness during attacks) were collected as well as migrainous headache and/or photo/phonophobia during vertigo; autoimmune disorders were also analyzed. A bedside examination was performed including study of spontaneous-positional nystagmus with infrared video goggles, post head shaking ny, skull vibration test, and video head impulse test. RESULTS We included 244 subjects, 181 were females (74.2%). The age of onset of the first vertigo was 36.6 ± 14.5 while of the first headache was 23.2 ± 10.1. A positive correlation has been found between the first headache and the first vertigo. The mean duration of vertigo attacks was 11 ± 16 h. We carried on a cluster analysis to identify subgroups of patients with common clinical features. Four variables allowed to aggregate clusters: age of onset of vertigo, duration of vertigo attacks, presence of migrainous headache during vertigo, and presence of cochlear symptoms during vertigo. We identified 5 clusters: cluster 1/group 1 (23 subjects, 9.4%) characterized by longer duration of vertigo attacks; cluster 2/group 2 (52 subjects, 21.3%) characterized by absence of migrainous headache and cochlear symptoms during vertigo; cluster 3/group 3 (44 subjects, 18%) characterized by presence of cochlear symptoms during vertigo but not headache; cluster 4/group 4 (57 subjects, 23.4%) by the presence of both cochlear symptoms and migrainous headache during vertigo; cluster 5/group 5 (68 subjects, 27.9%) characterized by migrainous headache but no cochlear symptoms during vertigo. CONCLUSION VM is with any evidence a heterogeneous disorder and clinical presentations exhibit a great variability. In VM, both symptoms orienting toward a peripheral mechanism (cochlear symptoms) and central ones (long lasting positional non-paroxysmal vertigo) may coexist. Our study is the first published trying to characterize subgroups of VM subjects, thus orienting toward different pathophysiological mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sudden hearing loss is a common presentation to ENT. In the authors' practice, patients often wait many weeks for formal hearing testing. This study aimed to assess whether a tablet-based hearing test, hearTest, could aid clinical decision-making within secondary care ENT. METHOD This was a multi-centre, prospective, non-randomised study to assess the feasibility, usability and accuracy of hearTest. RESULTS In the sample, hearTest was shown to be an acceptable method of testing for hearing loss by both patients and clinicians. The 0.5-4 kHz range had an average clinical agreement rate of 95.1 per cent when compared with formal pure tone audiometry, deeming it an accurate test to diagnose hearing loss. CONCLUSION The authors propose that hearTest can be used within ENT as a clinical decision support tool when manual audiometry is not immediately available. Within the authors' practice, hearTest is used to aid diagnosis and management of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this study we investigated the effect of cisplatin-based chemotherapy on hearing loss in children with cancer. MATERIAL AND METHOD In this retrospective study, 20 children aged 6 to 17 years with cancer who were treated with cisplatin and had normal results on initial audiometry test were included. The demographic, clinical, and medical information of all children was extracted and recorded. The hearing thresholds were determined for the frequency of >8 kHz by an audiometrist two weeks after receiving the last course of cisplatin. Finally, all data was analyzed. RESULTS In this study, 20 children with cancer were included of who 9 were girls (45 %) and 11 were boys (55 %). The patients' mean age at the time of diagnosis was 6.65 years. Results showed that children who received cisplatin ≥70 mg/m2 (P.value = 0.09) and ≥ 7 courses of cisplatin (P.value = 0.01), and a cumulative dose higher than 400 mg/m2 (P.value = 0.02) had higher chance of hearing loss. CONCLUSION According to the results it can be concluded that since higher doses caused higher risk of hearing loss and also since lower doses were effective for treatment of the cancer in children therefore to preventing the hearing loss, lower doses of cisplatin are recommended for cancer treatment in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Prior studies on severe maternal morbidity (SMM) have often excluded women who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), even though they are at increased risk of pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes. This study compared rates of SMM during delivery and postpartum among DHH and non-DHH women. METHODS This nationally representative retrospective cohort study used hospital discharge data from the 2004-2020 Health Care and Cost Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample. The risk of SMM with and without blood transfusion during delivery and postpartum among DHH and non-DHH women were compared using modified Poisson regression analysis. The study was conducted in the United States in 2022-2023. RESULTS The cohort included 9351 births to DHH women for the study period, and 13,574,382 age-matched and delivery year-matched births to non-DHH women in a 1:3 case-control ratio. The main outcomes were SMM and non-transfusion SMM during delivery and postpartum. Relative risks were sequentially adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, hospital-level characteristics, and clinical characteristics. In unadjusted analyses, DHH women were at 80% higher risk for SMM (RR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.63-2.02, p < 0.001) during delivery and postpartum compared to non-DHH women. Adjustment for socio-demographic and hospital characteristics attenuated risk for SMM (RR = 1.54, 95% CI 1.38-1.72, p < 0.001). Adjustment for the Elixhauser comorbidity score further attenuated the risk of SMM among DHH women (RR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.01-1.26, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The findings of this study demonstrate a critical need for inclusive preconception, prenatal, and postpartum care that address conditions that increase the risk for SMM among DHH people.

Abstract
Long-term outcomes of persistent pulmonary hypertension of newborn (PPHN) depend on disease severity, duration of ventilation, and associated anomalies. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia survivors may have respiratory morbidities and developmental delay. The presence of PPHN is associated with increased mortality in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, though the effects on neurodevelopment are less clear. Preterm infants can develop pulmonary hypertension (PH) early in the postnatal course or later in the setting of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). BPD-PH is associated with higher mortality, particularly within the first year. Evidence suggests that both early and late PH in preterm infants are associated with neurodevelopmental impairment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is extremely important to assess speech perception skills in children with hearing loss, since these skills are essential to guide the rehabilitation process. OBJECTIVE Update and validate the Early Speech Perception test in Spanish in normal-hearing children. METHOD Different drawings were selected from children's books used daily in the work of teachers and speech therapists. 69 children aged between 3 and 8 years old participated in the study, divided into 6 groups by age (group 1, 3 years of age (n = 13); group 2, 4 years of age (n = 15); group 3, 5 years of age (n = 12); group 4, 6 years of age (n = 8); group 5, 7 years of age (n = 10); group 6, 8 years of age (n = 11)). For each category of the test, the children had to name and point to the corresponding drawing. RESULTS The difference between age and gender groups was statistically evaluated. For the naming phase, a significant difference was observed between groups 1 and group 5; and between group 1 and group 6. For the pointing phase there was no difference between the groups, and in all groups, there was a score greater than 98%. In relation to gender, there was no difference between the groups. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrates that the material developed to assess auditory reception in normal-hearing children from 3 to 8 years old is appropriate.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study is a systematic review of the literature which seeks to evaluate auditory and quality of life (QOL) outcomes of cochlear implantation in patients with Usher syndrome. METHODS Systematic review of studies indexed in Medline via PubMed, Ovid EMBASE, Web of Science, CENTRAL and clinicaltrials.gov was performed up to March 9th 2022, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement. Patient demographics, comorbidity, details of cochlear implantation, auditory, and QOL outcomes were extracted and summarized. RESULTS 33 studies reported over 217 cochlear implants in 187 patients with Usher syndrome, comprising subtypes 1 (56 patients), 2 (9 patients), 3 (23 patients), and not specified (99 patients). Auditory outcomes included improved sound detection, speech perception, and speech intelligibility. QOL outcomes were reported for 75 patients, with benefit reported in the majority. CONCLUSIONS Many patients with Usher syndrome develop improved auditory outcomes after cochlear implantation with early implantation being an important factor.

Abstract
Spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) transmit sound signals received by hair cells to the auditory center to produce hearing. The quantity and function are important for maintaining normal hearing function. Limited by the regenerative capacity, SGNs are unable to regenerate spontaneously after injury. Various neurotrophic factors play an important role in the regeneration process. Neuritin is a neurite growth factor that plays an important role in neural plasticity and nerve injury repair. In this study, we used bioinformatics analysis to show that neuritin was negatively correlated with cochlear damage. Then, we aimed to establish a cochlear spiral ganglion-specific sensorineural deafness model in gerbils using ouabain and determine the effects of exogenous neuritin protein in protecting damaged cochlear SGNs and repairing damaged auditory nerve function. The provides a new research strategy and scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of sensorineural deafness caused by the loss of SGNs. We were discovered that neuritin is expressed throughout the development of the gerbil cochlea, primarily in the SGNs and Corti regions. The expression of neuritin was negatively correlated with the sensorineural deafness induced by ouabain. In vitro and in vivo revealed that neuritin significantly maintained the number and arrangement of SGNs and nerve fibers in the damaged cochlea and effectively protected the high-frequency listening function of gerbils.

Abstract
Afferent inputs from the cochlea transmit auditory information to the central nervous system, where information is processed and passed up the hierarchy, ending in the auditory cortex. Through these brain pathways, spectral and temporal features of sounds are processed and sent to the cortex for perception. There are also many mechanisms in place for modulation of these inputs, with a major source of modulation being based in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Neurons of the rodent mPFC receive input from the auditory cortex and other regions such as thalamus, hippocampus and basal forebrain, allowing them to encode high-order information about sounds such as context, predictability and valence. The mPFC then exerts control over auditory perception via top-down modulation of the central auditory pathway, altering perception of and responses to sounds. The result is a higher-order control of auditory processing that produces such characteristics as deviance detection, attention, avoidance and fear conditioning. This review summarises connections between mPFC and the primary auditory pathway, responses of mPFC neurons to auditory stimuli, how mPFC outputs shape the perception of sounds, and how changes to these systems during hearing loss and tinnitus may contribute to these conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Chronic obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction (OETD) can lead to tympanic membrane (TM) retraction and middle ear effusion (MEE) which can cause conductive hearing impairment, which among other ear symptoms can lower the quality of life (QoL). In this prospective study we assess hearing results and subjective changes in QoL following balloon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) in treatment of OETD. METHODS Totally 25 ears with TM retraction and 18 ears with MEE due to chronic OETD underwent BET as the sole intervention. Outcomes including otoscopy, ability to perform the Valsalva maneuver, tympanometry, audiometry, Eustachian tube inflammation scale and the Glasgow Benefit Inventory questionnaire (GBI) were obtained on all patients preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS Hearing thresholds improved statistically significantly (p < 0.05) with means of 3 dB in the TM retraction group and 9 dB in the MEE group. Total GBI results indicated a positive influence on patients' QoL. Valsalva success rate was 80% in patients with TM retraction and 67% in patients with MEE. Tympanometry results improved in 50% of TM retraction patients and in 33% of MEE patients. CONCLUSIONS Here we demonstrated that the BET has a positive impact on patients' conductive hearing loss and QoL in patients with TM retraction or MEE. Results were better in TM retraction group than in MEE group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The comprehensive description of hearing loss in China and the shifting pattern remain unclear. We conducted the study to estimate the burden of hearing loss in China and project the trends from 2020 to 2034. STUDY DESIGN AND METHOD Data on the disease burden of hearing loss were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to quantify the trends of the age-standardized rates. Projections of hearing loss burden were made until 2034 using Bayesian age-period-cohort analysis. RESULTS In China, prevalent cases of hearing loss increased from 224.4 million in 1990 to 426.5 million in 2019, representing an increase of 90.1 %. The age-standardized prevalence rate of hearing loss ranged from 22,592.8/100,000 in 1990-22,612.4/100,000 in 2019, with an EAPC of 0.003 %, representing a stable trend. Of the category of hearing loss, mild hearing loss accounted for the highest proportion, with 331.4 million people. More than 95 million people had moderate-to-complete hearing loss. Moreover, hearing loss was mostly attributable to age-related and other factors for adults and otitis media for children younger than 10 years. Based on the projection results, there will be 561 million people (40.1 % of the total population) have hearing loss by 2034. CONCLUSIONS The prevalent cases of hearing loss in China substantially increased over the last 30 years. Over two in five Chinese people will have hearing loss by 2034, thus suggesting more solutions should be established to reduce the burden of hearing loss.

Abstract
Deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing (DDBHH) individuals experience barriers to accessing cancer screening, including ineffective patient-physician communication when discussing screening recommendations. For other underserved communities, culturally and linguistically aligned community health navigators (CHNs) have been shown to improve cancer screening and care. A needs assessment study was conducted to identify barriers and gather recommendations for CHN training resources. A community-based participatory needs assessment was conducted from May 2022 to June 2022 using three focus groups. Eight were cancer survivors, six advocates/navigators, and three clinicians. All questions were semi-structured and covered screening barriers, observations or personal experiences, perceived usefulness of having a CHN to promote cancer screening adherence, and training resources that may be useful to American Sign Language (ASL)-proficient CHNs, who are also culturally and linguistically aligned. Out of 20 focus group participants, seven self-identified as persons of color. Data highlighted systemic, attitudinal, communication, and personal-level barriers as recurrent themes. The most frequently cited barrier was access to training that supports the role and competencies of CHNs, followed by cultural considerations, access to cancer guidelines in ASL, dialect diversity in sign language, and the health system itself. Unaddressed barriers can contribute to health disparities, such as lower preventive cancer screening rates amongst DDBHH individuals. The next step is to translate recommendations into actionable tasks for DDBHH CHN training programs. As a result, CHNs will be well-equipped to help DDBHH individuals navigate and overcome their unique barriers to cancer screening and healthcare access.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Benzene, ethylbenzene, meta/para-xylene, and ortho-xylene, collectively referred to as benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BEX), constitute the main components of volatile organic aromatic compounds (VOACs) and can have adverse effects on human health. The relationship between exposure to BEX and hearing loss (HL) in the adult U.S. population was aimed to be assessed. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 2003-2004, 2011-2012, and 2015-2016 were analyzed. This dataset included complete demographic characteristics, pure-tone audiometry measurements, and volatile organic compound detection data from the NHANES database. A weighted multivariate logistic regression model was employed to investigate the associations between blood BEX concentrations HL, low-frequency hearing loss (SFHL), and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL). RESULTS 2174 participants were included, with weighted prevalence rates of HL, SFHL, and HFHL being 46.81%, 25.23%, and 45.86%, respectively. Exposure to benzene, ethylbenzene, meta/para-xylene, and ortho-xylene, and cumulative BEX concentrations increased the risk of hearing loss (odds ratios [ORs] were 1.36, 1.22, 1.42, 1.23, and 1.31, respectively; all P < 0.05). In the analysis with SFHL as the outcome, ethylbenzene, m-/p-xylene, o-xylene, benzene, and overall BEX increased the risk (OR 1.26, 1.21, 1.28, 1.20, and 1.25, respectively; all P < 0.05). For HFHL, exposure to ethylbenzene, m-/p-xylene, o-xylene, benzene, and overall BEX increased the risk (OR 1.36, 1.22, 1.42, 1.22, and 1.31, respectively; all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our study indicated that a positive correlation between individual or cumulative exposure to benzene, ethylbenzene, meta/para-xylene, and ortho-xylene and the risk of HL, SFHL, and HFHL. Further research is imperative to acquire a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms by which organic compounds, notably BEX, in causing hearing loss and to validate these findings in longitudinal environmental studies.

Abstract
Hearing loss is considered one of the most common sensory neurological defects, with approximately 60% of cases attributed to genetic factors. Human pathogenic variants in the TBC1D24 gene are associated with various clinical phenotypes, including dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss DFNA65, characterized by progressive hearing loss after the development of language. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the causative gene and mutations in a family with hereditary deafness. We recruited a three-generation family with autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss (ADNSHL) and conducted detailed medical histories and relevant examinations. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was used to identify genetic variants in the proband, which were then validated using Sanger sequencing. Multiple computational software tools were employed to predict the impact of the variant on the function and structure of the TBC1D24 protein. A series of bioinformatics tools were applied to determine the conservation characteristics of the sequence, establish a three-dimensional structural model, and investigate changes in molecular dynamics. A detailed genotype and phenotype analysis were carried out. The family exhibited autosomal dominant, progressive, postlingual, and nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss. A novel heterozygous variant, c.1459C>T (p.His487Tyr), in the TBC1D24 gene was identified and confirmed to be associated with the hearing loss phenotype in this family. Conservation analysis revealed high conservation of the amino acid affected by this variant across different species. The mutant protein showed alterations in thermodynamic stability, elasticity, and conformational dynamics. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated changes in RMSD, RMSF, Rg, and SASA of the mutant structure. We computed the onset age of non-syndromic hearing loss associated with mutations in the TBC1D24 gene and identified variations in the hearing progression time and annual threshold deterioration across different frequencies. The identification of a new variant associated with rare autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hereditary hearing loss in this family broadens the range of mutations in the TBC1D24 gene. This variant has the potential to influence the interaction between the TLDc domain and TBC domain, thereby affecting the protein's biological function.

Abstract
The relationship between the reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy or refusal among people with sensory disabilities and mental health conditions (MHCs) are unclear. Data from the Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey were analyzed to examine reasons for COVID-19 vaccination refusal among persons with sensory disabilities. Multivariable logistic and polytomous regression were used to examine the relationships among sensory disability status, MHC, and reasons for vaccine refusal and hesitancy. Individuals with sensory disabilities had higher proportion of anxiety and depression than those without a sensory disability. Individuals with a sensory disability and MHCs were less likely to obtain a vaccine and have a general distrust in the COVID-19 vaccine and the government than those without a disability or a MHC. These findings can assist in tailoring messages and developing programs to increase COVID-19 vaccination trust and uptake among individuals with disabilities and MHCs.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are low-intensity sounds generated by the cochlea and associated with the function of the outer hair cells. Since OAE measurements do not require active participation of a listener, OAEs are considered an objective measure of cochlear function. While distortion-product OAEs (DPOAEs) are commonly used in clinical practice, limited information is available on the performance of various clinical devices. This study compared two commercial clinical devices, Titan and Eclipse from Interacoustics, and collected normative data for DPOAEs in people with normal hearing. The data collection and analysis were focused on signal and noise amplitudes as well as signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Subjects and Methods Sixty-three participants with normal hearing (age 23.2±2.0 years) were included in the study. DPOAEs were measured at 31 frequencies ranging from 500 to 10,000 Hz. Results DPOAE amplitude differed across frequencies. Additionally, a high number of unreliable responses were observed at the edge frequencies (<828 Hz and >6,072 Hz). There were no significant differences between the two devices in terms of DPOAE amplitudes, but the recorded-noise levels (amplitude) differed significantly. SNRs of the recorded OAEs were frequency dependent (higher frequencies showed larger SNRs), and significant differences in terms of SNR were found between the two devices. Conclusions Despite the above-mentioned differences, the OAEs recorded with both devices met the pass criteria for the SNR (≥6 dB) consistently across frequencies, and thus the differences do not compromise the test outcomes. The frequency dependence of the OAE amplitudes and the corresponding SNRs may be relevant for clinical practice.

Abstract
Cisplatin (CisPt)-induced ototoxicity (CIO) is delineated as a consequence of CisPt-induced intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can be circumvented by Bucillamine (BUC; an antioxidant drug with sulfhydryl groups) and Diltiazem (DLT, L-type calcium channel blocker). However, its effective accumulation in the Organ of Corti and cell cytoplasm is desired. Therefore, a biocompatible BUC- and DLT-nanoparticles (NPs)-impregnated dual stimuli-responsive formulation (NanoSensoGel) presented here with ROS- and thermo-responsive properties for the sustained and receptive delivery of drugs. The ROS-responsive polypropylene sulfide- methyl polyethylene glycol-2000 (PPS-mPEG2000) polymer was rationally designed, synthesized, and characterized to fabricate BUC- and DLT-loaded PPS-mPEG2000-NPs (BUC- and DLT-NPs). The fabricated BUC- and DLT-NPs showed efficient cellular uptake, intracellular delivery, ROS responsiveness, and cytoprotective effect which was characterized using cellular internalization, intracellular ROS, mitochondrial superoxide, and Caspase 3/7 assays on the House Ear Institute-Organ of Corti-1 (HEI-OC1) cells. The composite NanoSensoGel (i.e., ROS-responsive BUC- and DLT-NPs suspended in the thermo-responsive hydrogel) present in a sol state at room temperature and turned to gel above 33°C, which could be essential for retaining the formulation at the target site for long-term release. The NanoSensoGel showed sustained release of BUC and DLT following Fickian release diffusion kinetics. Overall, a novel NanoSensoGel formulation developed in this study has demonstrated its great potential in delivering therapeutics in the inner ear for prophylactic treatment of CIO, and associated hearing loss.

Abstract
Van der Hoeve's syndrome, also known as osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), is a genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by fragile, fracture-prone bone and hearing loss. The disease is caused by a gene mutation in one of the two type I collagen genes COL1A1 or COL1A2. In this study, we identified a novel frameshift mutation of the COL1A1 gene (c.1607delG) in a family with OI using whole-exome sequencing, bioinformatics analysis and Sanger sequencing. This mutation may lead to the deletion of a portion of exon 23 and the generation of a premature stop codon in the COL1A1 gene. To further investigate the impact of this mutation, we established two induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of OI patients carrying a novel mutation in the COL1A1 gene. Osteoblasts (OB) derived from OI-iPSCs exhibited reduced production of type I collagen and diminished ability to differentiate into osteoblasts. Using a CRISPR-based homology-directed repair strategy, we corrected the OI disease-causing COL1A1 novel mutations in iPSCs generated from an affected individual. Our results demonstrated that the diminished expression of type I collagen and osteogenic potential were enhanced in OB induced from corrected OI-iPSCs compared to those from OI-iPSCs. Overall, our results provide new insights into the genetic basis of Van der Hoeve's syndrome and highlight the potential of iPSC technology for disease modeling and therapeutic development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine the prevalence of vestibular schwannoma (VS) among patients presenting with sudden hearing loss (SHL) and to characterize the clinical features of individuals diagnosed with both VS and SHL. METHODS We conducted an observational retrospective review at a tertiary referral center, spanning a 30-year period, focusing on patients diagnosed with SHL where VS was confirmed as the underlying cause. We included patients meeting these criteria while excluding those lacking imaging or with a pre-existing diagnosis of VS. We evaluated the audiological characteristics at the time of diagnosis and assessed clinical outcomes following treatment. RESULTS Among the 403 patients presenting with SHL during the study period, 9 (2.2%) were diagnosed with VS, aged between 25 and 72 years. Although audiometric profiles varied, high-frequency hearing loss predominated, mostly categorized as mild to moderate. Six patients (66%) had Koos grade I-II schwannomas. Only 2 patients achieved complete hearing recovery post-treatment, while 4 showed no improvement. CONCLUSIONS VS is a rare etiology of SHL, accounting for slightly over 2% of cases. Its symptomatology, severity, and audiometric patterns do not significantly differ from SHL caused by other factors. Tumor size does not correlate with hearing characteristics. Treatment modalities resemble those for other SHL cases, and hearing improvement does not obviate the necessity for follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to determine the association between cardiometabolic diseases, including metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and diabetes, and the type and degree of hearing loss in noise-exposed workers. Methods A total of 237,028 workers underwent air conduction pure tone audiometry in 2015 to assess their health and diagnose cardiometabolic diseases. The study defined metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and diabetes using blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Mid-frequency hearing loss was defined as ≥ 30 dB at 2,000 Hz, whereas high-frequency hearing loss was ≥ 40 dB at 4,000 Hz. The average air conduction hearing thresholds at these frequencies were used to determine hearing loss degrees. Results The odds ratio (OR) of combined exposure to noise and night-shift work in all cardiometabolic diseases was higher than that of noise exposure alone. The risk of cardiometabolic diseases was dose-response, with higher hearing loss causing higher ORs. The ORs of hypertension compared with the normal group were 1.147 (1.098-1.198), 1.196 (1.127-1.270), and 1.212 (1.124-1.306), and those of diabetes were 1.177 (1.119-1.239), 1.234 (1.154-1.319), and 1.346 (1.241-1.459) for mild, moderate, and moderate-severe hearing loss, respectively. Conclusions Workers who are exposed to noise tend to demonstrate high risks of hearing loss and cardiometabolic diseases; thus, bio-monitoring of cardiometabolic diseases, as well as auditory observation, is necessary.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to comprehensively investigate the prevalence and distribution patterns of three common genetic variants associated with hearing loss (HL) in Chinese neonatal population. Methods: Prior to June 30, 2023, an extensive search and screening process was conducted across multiple literature databases. R software was utilized for conducting meta-analyses, cartography, and correlation analyses. Results: Firstly, our study identified a total of 99 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Notably, provinces such as Qinghai, Tibet, Jilin, and Heilongjiang lack large-scale genetic screening data for neonatal deafness. Secondly, in Chinese newborns, the carrier frequencies of GJB2 variants (c.235delC, c.299_300delAT) were 1.63 % (95 %CI 1.52 %-1.76 %) and 0.33 % (95 %CI 0.30 %-0.37 %); While SLC26A4 variants (c.919-2A > G, c.2168A > G) exhibited carrier rates of 0.95 % (95 %CI 0.86 %-1.04 %) and 0.17 % (95 %CI 0.15 %-0.19 %); Additionally, Mt 12S rRNA m.1555 A > G variant was found at a rate of 0.24 % (95 % CI 0.22 %-0.26 %). Thirdly, the mutation rate of GJB2 c.235delC was higher in the east of the Heihe-Tengchong line, whereas the mutation rate of Mt 12S rRNA m.1555 A > G variant exhibited the opposite pattern. Forthly, no significant correlation exhibited the opposite pattern of GJB2 variants, but there was a notable correlation among SLC26A4 variants. Lastly, strong regional distribution correlations were evident between mutation sites from different genes, particularly between SLC26A4 (c.919-2A > G and c.2168A > G) and GJB c.299_300delAT. Conclusions: The most prevalent deafness genes among Chinese neonates were GJB2 c.235delC variant, followed by SLC26A4 c.919-2A > G variant. These gene mutation rates exhibit significant regional distribution characteristics. Consequently, it is imperative to enhance genetic screening efforts to reduce the incidence of deafness in high-risk areas.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is the most common tumour of the cerebellopontine angle. The greater accessibility to radiological tests has increased its diagnosis. Taking into account the characteristics of the tumour, the symptoms and the age of the patient, three therapeutic strategies have been proposed: observation, surgery or radiotherapy. Choosing the most appropriate for each patient is a frequent source of controversy. MATERIAL AND METHODS This paper includes an exhaustive literature review of issues related to VS that can serve as a clinical guide in the management of patients with these lesions. The presentation has been oriented in the form of questions that the clinician usually asks himself and the answers have been written and/or reviewed by a panel of national and international experts consulted by the Otology Commission of the SEORL-CCC. RESULTS A list has been compiled containing the 13 most controversial thematic blocks on the management of VS in the form of 50 questions, and answers to all of them have been sought through a systematic literature review (articles published on PubMed and Cochrane Library between 1992 and 2023 related to each thematic area). Thirty-three experts, led by the Otology Committee of SEORL-CCC, have analyzed and discussed all the answers. In Annex 1, 14 additional questions divided into 4 thematic areas can be found. CONCLUSIONS This clinical practice guideline on the management of VS offers agreed answers to the most common questions that are asked about this tumour. The absence of sufficient prospective studies means that the levels of evidence on the subject are generally medium or low. This fact increases the interest of this type of clinical practice guidelines prepared by experts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is the most frequent malformation of the inner ear associated with sensorineural hearing loss (5-15%). It exists when the diameter in imaging tests is greater than 1.5 mm at its midpoint. The association between hearing loss and EVA has been described in a syndromic and non-syndromic manner. It can appear as a familial or isolated form and the audiological profile is highly variable. The gene responsible for sensorineural hearing loss associated with EVA is located in the same region described for Pendred syndrome, where the SCL26A4 gene is located. OBJECTIVE To describe a series of children diagnosed with EVA in order to study their clinical and audiological characteristics, as well as the associated genetic and vestibular alterations. METHOD Retrospective study of data collection of children diagnosed with EVA, from April 2014 to February 2023. RESULTS Of the 17 cases, 12 were male and 5 were female. 5 of them were unilateral and 12 bilateral. In 5 cases, a cranial traumatism triggered the hearing loss. Genetic alterations were detected in 3 cases: 2 mutations in the SCL26A4 gene and 1 mutation in the MCT1 gene. 13 patients (76.5%) were rehabilitated with hearing aids and 9 of them required cochlear implantation. DISCUSSION The clinical importance of AVD lies in the fact that it is a frequent finding in the context of postneonatal hearing loss. It is convenient to have a high suspicion to diagnose it with imaging tests, to monitor its evolution, and to rehabilitate early.

Abstract
GJB2 gene mutations are the most common causes of autosomal recessive non-syndromic hereditary deafness. For individuals suffering from severe to profound GJB2-related deafness, cochlear implants have emerged as the sole remedy for auditory improvement. Some previous studies have highlighted the crucial role of preserving cochlear neural components in achieving favorable outcomes after cochlear implantation. Thus, we generated a conditional knockout mouse model (Cx26-CKO) in which Cx26 was completely deleted in the cochlear supporting cells driven by the Sox2 promoter. The Cx26-CKO mice showed severe hearing loss and massive loss of hair cells and Deiter's cells, which represented the extreme form of human deafness caused by GJB2 gene mutations. In addition, multiple pathological changes in the peripheral auditory nervous system were found, including abnormal innervation, demyelination, and degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons as well as disruption of heminodes in Cx26-CKO mice. These findings provide invaluable insights into the deafness mechanism and the treatment for severe deafness in Cx26-null mice.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hypoparathyroidism, deafness, and renal dysplasia (HDR) syndrome, also known as Barakat syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant disease characterized by the triad of hypoparathyroidism, deafness, and renal abnormalities. The disorder is caused by the haploinsufficiency of the zinc finger transcription factor GATA3 and exhibits a great clinical variability with an age-dependent penetrance of each feature. We report two unrelated kindreds whose probands were referred to our outpatient clinic for further evaluation of hypoparathyroidism. METHODS The proband of family 1, a 17-year-old boy, was referred for severe hypocalcemia (5.9 mg/dL) incidentally detected at routine blood tests. Abdomen ultrasound showed bilateral renal cysts. The audiometric evaluation revealed the presence of bilateral moderate hearing loss although the patient could communicate without any problem. Conversely, the proband of family 2, a 19-year-old man, had severe symptomatic hypocalcemia complicated by epileptic seizure at the age of 14 years; his past medical history was remarkable for right nephrectomy at the age of 4 months due to multicystic renal disease and bilateral hearing loss diagnosed at the age of 18 years. RESULTS Based on clinical, biochemical, and radiologic data, HDR syndrome was suspected and genetic analysis of the GATA3 gene revealed the presence of two pathogenetic variants in exon 3, c.404dupC and c.431dupG, in the proband of family 1 and 2, respectively. CONCLUSION HDR syndrome is a rare cause of hypoparathyroidism and must be excluded in all patients with apparently idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. A correct diagnosis is of great importance for early detection of other HDR-related features and genetic counseling.

Abstract
Substantial efforts have been made for local administration of small molecules or biologics in treating hearing loss diseases caused by either trauma, genetic mutations, or drug ototoxicity. Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) naturally secreted from cells have drawn increasing attention on attenuating hearing impairment from both preclinical studies and clinical studies. Highly emerging field utilizing diverse bioengineering technologies for developing EVs as the bioderived therapeutic materials, along with artificial intelligence (AI)-based targeting toolkits, shed the light on the unique properties of EVs specific to inner ear delivery. This review will illuminate such exciting research field from fundamentals of hearing protective functions of EVs to biotechnology advancement and potential clinical translation of functionalized EVs. Specifically, the advancements in assessing targeting ligands using AI algorithms are systematically discussed. The overall translational potential of EVs is reviewed in the context of auditory sensing system for developing next generation gene therapy.

Abstract
Senile deafness and hearing loss in adults over 50 are major public health issues as a result of the population's ageing demographic. Menopausal women tend to develop hearing loss, while no clear link has been found between the two. The purpose of this study was to determine how menopause and diabetes mellitus affects hearing loss. We assessed 158 menopausal women in total. Pure Tone Audiometry and HbA1c levels was measured, along with appropriate clinical history and examination. The association between those levels and hearing was researched by chi-square test. There were 158 study participants. Mean age of the study population was 50.5 (± 2.49) years. Onset and duration of hard of hearing was assessed in 41 patients (25.9%). 33% (N = 53) of the patients had history of Diabetes mellitus, of which 52.8% offered history of the disease for more than or equal to five years. On audiological assessment, 74.1% had no hearing loss (N = 117), 4.4% had unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (N = 7) and 21.5% had bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (N = 34). Statistics show that hearing loss is statistically connected with ageing and poor glycemic management. With chi square values of 9.629 and P value 0.002 found a significant correlation between ageing and hearing loss. Poor glycemic control is significantly associated with hearing loss with a chi-square value of 4.304 and P value 0.038. Poor glycemic control and menopause is found to be strongly associated with sensorineural hearing loss. Further prospective, hormonal studies including larger population is recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, it was aimed to compare parents of children with hearing impairment (with cochlear implant (CI) or hearing aid) and parents of children with normal hearing (NH) in terms of care burden, self-efficacy and psychological resilience levels. METHODS The study participants were parents of children aged 3-12 years. Zarit Care Burden Scale (ZCBS), Parental Self-Efficacy Scale (PSES) and Brief Psychological Resilience Scale (BPRS) were administered to the parents. RESULTS The mean BPRS score was statistically significantly higher for the NH group than for the hearing impairment groups. It was found that the mean ZCBS score was statistically significantly higher for CI group than for the other groups (p < 0.05). A statistically significant and positive correlation was found between the PSES and BPRS scores of the CI group. CONCLUSION It is thought that the results of this study will contribute to the creation of case-specific intervention/rehabilitation programs.
