Abstract
Fire emissions in Southeast Asia transported to southern China every spring (March-May), influencing not only the air quality but also the weather and climate. However, the multi-year variations and magnitude of this impact on aerosol radiation forcing in southern China remain unclear. Here, we quantified the multi-year contributions of fire emissions in Indo-China Peninsula (ICP) region to aerosol radiation forcing in the various southern Chinese provinces during the fire season (March-May) of 2013-2019 combining the 3-dimension chemical transport model and the Column Radiation Model (CRM) simulations. The models' evaluations showed they reasonably capture the temporal and spatial distribution of surface aerosol concentrations and column aerosol optical properties over the study regions. The fire emissions over the ICP region were found to increase the aerosol optical depth (AOD) value by 0.1 (15 %) and reduce the single scattering albedo (SSA) in three southern regions of China (Yunnan-YN, Guangxi-GX, and Guangdong-GD from west to east), owing to increases in the proportions of black carbon (BC, 0.4 % ± 0.1 %) and organic carbon (OC, 3.0 % ± 0.9 %) within the aerosol compositions. The transported smoke aerosols cooled surface but heated the atmosphere in the southern China regions, with the largest mean reduction of -5 Wm-2 (-3 %) in surface shortwave radiation forcing and the maximum daily contributions of about -15 Wm-2 (-15 %) to the atmosphere radiation forcing in the GX region, followed by the GD and YN regions. The impacts of ICP fire emissions on aerosol optical and radiative parameters declined during 2013-2019, with the highest rate of 0.393 ± 0.478 Wm-2 yr-1 in the GX for the shortwave radiation forcing in the atmosphere. Besides, their yearly changes in the contribution were consistent with the annual fire emissions in the ICP region. Such strong radiative perturbations of ICP fire emissions were expected to influence regional meteorology in southern China and should be considered in the climate simulations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lowe syndrome is characterized by the presence of congenital cataracts, psychomotor retardation, and dysfunctional proximal renal tubules. This study presents a case of an atypical phenotype, investigates the genetic characteristics of eight children diagnosed with Lowe syndrome in southern China, and performs functional analysis of the novel variants. METHODS Whole-exome sequencing was conducted on eight individuals diagnosed with Lowe syndrome from three medical institutions in southern China. Retrospective collection and analysis of clinical and genetic data were performed, and functional analysis was conducted on the five novel variants. RESULTS In our cohort, the clinical symptoms of the eight Lowe syndrome individuals varied. One patient was diagnosed with Lowe syndrome but did not present with congenital cataracts. Common features among all patients included cognitive impairment, short stature, and low molecular weight proteinuria. Eight variations in the OCRL gene were identified, encompassing three previously reported and five novel variations. Among the novel variations, three nonsense mutations were determined to be pathogenic, and two patients harboring novel missense variations of uncertain significance exhibited severe typical phenotypes. Furthermore, all novel variants were associated with altered protein expression levels and impacted primary cilia formation. CONCLUSION This study describes the first case of an atypical Lowe syndrome patient without congenital cataracts in China and performs a functional analysis of novel variants in the OCRL gene, thereby expanding the understanding of the clinical manifestations and genetic diversity associated with Lowe syndrome.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soil is a global concern for soil health and food sustainability because it can cause Cd accumulation in cereal grains. An in-situ stabilizing technology (using organic amendments) has been widely used for Cd remediation in arable lands. Therefore, the current study examined the influence of vermicompost (VC) on soil biochemical traits, bacterial community diversity and composition, Cd uptake and accumulation in rice plants and grain yield in a Cd-contaminated soil during the late growing season in 2022. Different doses of VC (i.e., V1 = 0 t ha-1, V2 = 3 t ha-1 and V3 = 6 t ha-1) and two concentrations of Cd (i.e., Cd1 = 0 and Cd2 = 50 mg Cd Kg-1 were used. We performed high-throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicons to characterize soil bacterial communities. The addition of VC considerably affected the diversity and composition of the soil bacterial community; and increased the relative abundance of phyla Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota, Plantomycetota, Gemmatimonadota, Patescibacteria and Firmicute. In addition, VC application, particularly High VC treatment, exhibited the highest bacterial diversity and richness (i.e., Simpson, Shannon, ACE, and Chao 1 indexes) of all treatments. Similarly, the VC application increased the soil chemical traits, including soil pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), available nitrogen (AN), total nitrogen (TN), total potassium (TK), total phosphorous (TP) and enzyme activities (i.e., acid phosphatase, catalase, urease and invertase) compared to non-VC treated soil under Cd stress. The average increase in SOC, TN, AN, TK and TP were 5.75%, 41.15%, 18.51%, 12.31%, 25.45% and 29.67%, respectively, in the High VC treatment (Pos-Cd + VC3) compared with Cd stressed soil. Redundancy analysis revealed that the leading bacterial phyla were associated with SOC, AN, TN, TP and pH, although the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidata, and Acidobacteria on a phylum basis and Actinobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Myxococcia on a class basis, were highly correlated with soil environmental factors. Moreover, the VC application counteracted the adverse effects of Cd on plants and significantly reduced the Cd uptake and accumulation in rice organs, such as roots, stem + leaves and grain under Cd stress conditions. Similarly, applying VC significantly increased the fragrant rice grain yield and yield traits under Cd toxicity. The correlation analysis showed that the increased soil quantities traits were crucial in obtaining high rice grain yield. Generally, the findings of this research demonstrate that the application of VC in paddy fields could be useful for growers in Southern China by sustainably enhancing soil functionality and crop production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a severe cardiovascular disease. The mortality rate for an AAA rupture is very high. Understanding the risk factors for AAA rupture would help AAA management, but little is known about these risk factors in the Chinese population. METHODS This retrospective study included patients that were diagnosed with AAA during the last 5 years in a large national hospital in southern China. AAA patients were divided into a rupture and non-rupture group. Clinical data were extracted from the hospital medical record system. Clinical features were compared between the rupture and non-rupture groups. The associations between potential risk factors and rupture risk were evaluated using a multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 337 AAA patients were included for analysis in the present study. AAA diameter was significantly larger, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and serum creatinine levels were both significantly higher in AAA rupture patients. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) levels were significantly lower in AAA rupture patients. After adjustment, the multivariate logistic analysis found that AAA diameter and hs-CRP were independently positively associated with AAA rupture, and HDL-C level was adversely associated with AAA rupture. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggests that larger AAA diameter and higher hs-CRP level are associated with a higher risk of AAA rupture, and higher HDL-C level is associated with a lower risk of AAA rupture. The results of this study may be helpful for the management of AAA patients in southern China.

Abstract
The surface ozone pollution is strongly coupled with ozone variations above the ground. Using sufficient airborne ozone profiles during 2012-2018, this study reveals the tropospheric ozone distributions over four cities located in coastal regions of southern China. The 7-year mean tropospheric ozone profiles in the four cities consistently show a double-maxima profile, with a local maximum at 1 km altitude and the other in the middle-to-upper troposphere. Seasonally, springtime ozone is larger than the annual mean throughout the troposphere, while ozone in summer is high in the middle-to-upper troposphere, leading to largest vertical variations among seasons. Ozone in the middle-to-upper troposphere is lower in autumn than in spring and summer. The winter ozone is characterized with a minimum in the lower troposphere, and low values in the middle-to-upper troposphere, leading to least vertical variations among seasons. We untangle the causes for these complicated vertical ozone variations using the GEOS-Chem model. The tropospheric ozone over southern China is partitioned into locally produced ozone, regionally transported native ozone, imported ozone from outside of China (foreign ozone) and natural stratospheric ozone. The results suggest that the springtime ozone abundance is due to the enhanced import of foreign and stratospheric ozone and the intensified regional transport processes of native ozone. In summer, local ozone production is enhanced and regional transport of ozone in the middle-to-upper troposphere is strengthened due to upward air motions, while such transport becomes weaker in autumn leaving low ozone in the middle-to-upper troposphere. In winter, the intensive westerly jets promote foreign and stratospheric ozone again in the middle-to-upper troposphere, but the local ozone production and regional transport are sharply reduced, resulting in low ozone near the surface. This study provides new insights into regional ozone profiles and reveals the significance of vertical ozone variations on surface ozone prevention strategy.

Abstract
The widespread use of neonicotinoid (neonic) insecticides in China's agricultural sector has led to high residual concentrations in the agroecosystem. Since soil is the primary source of direct pesticide exposure, soil contamination is a significant concern, particularly in regions with extensive agricultural production. This study aims to determine the spatial distribution of neonics in farmlands from four southern provinces that are home to China's crucial commercial grain bases. By combining eight neonics into imidacloprid-equivalent total neonics (IMIRPF) using the relative potency factor method, the ecological risks to humans were also assessed. The results showed that imidacloprid had the highest detection rate (96%-100%), followed by thiamethoxam and clothianidin, which ranged from 44% to 64%. Maximum and average IMIRPF values in soil samples from Zhejiang Province were 277.02 and 46.05 μg kg-1 (dry weight), respectively. Guangdong (maximum = 191.62 μg kg-1, mean = 39.70 μg kg-1) and Jiangxi (maximum = 199.13 μg kg-1, mean = 28.95 μg kg-1) had comparable IMIRPF while Jiangsu had the lowest level of total neonics, with a maximum of 86.07 μg kg-1 and a mean of 19.49 μg kg-1. A significant positive correlation between IMIRPF and total organic carbon in soils was also found. The average daily doses of neonics from soil-borne exposure through food intake, soil ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact calculated for adults and children in each province were all lower than the reference dose (RfD, 57 μg kg-1 d-1) of imidacloprid. However, the potential health risk to human health cannot be disregarded, given their increasing use and pervasiveness in the environment. Our results help to raise concerns about the safety of the agroecological environment under neonic exposure in the major agricultural provinces of southern China.

Abstract
Sarcocheilichthys parvus (Cypriniformes: Gobionidae) is a stream fish which is endemic to sub-tropical coastal drainages in southern China, thus offering a valuable model for understanding how genetic divergence arises in stream-adapting freshwater fishes in this region. Using the mitochondrial Cyt b gene, integrative analyses of phylogeny, population demography, and ancestral area and paleo-drainage reconstructions are carried out to explicitly explore the role of landscape evolution in genetic diversification of S. parvus. The time-calibrated phylogeny of S. parvus indicates the splitting of two major lineages (A and B) at ∼3.66 Ma. Lineage A inhabits the Poyang Lake sub-drainage of the middle Yangtze River, Han River and Pearl River, and can be split into two sub-lineages (A-I and A-II), where sub-lineage A-II can be further sub-divided into three infra-sub-lineages (A-IIa, A-IIb and A-IIc). Except for the infra-sub-lineage A-IIc, which is restricted to the Han River and Pearl River, the other sub-lineages and infra-sub-lineages live exclusively in the Poyang Lake sub-drainage. Lineage B lives in the lower Yangtze River, Qiantang River, Jiaojiang River and Ou River, displaying close genetic relationships among the drainages. Rapid population expansion has occurred since the Late Pleistocene. Our findings indicate that the splitting of lineages A and B could be attributed to geographic isolation due to the Zhe-Min Uplift, acting as a biogeographic barrier before the late Early Pleistocene. Furthermore, the strong genetic divergence within Lineage A could be explained by the isolation role of the Nanling Mountains and Poyang Lake acting as an ecological barrier; while the lack of phylogenetic structure within Lineage B may have been the result of paleo-drainage connections or episodic freshwater connections during the eustatic low stand of sea level in the late Middle-Late Pleistocene.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rice (Oryza sativa L.) production, such as farmers' livelihood and the soil quality, has been identified to be strong influenced by climate change in China. However, the benefits of low carbon technologies (LCTs) are still debatable in rice production for farmers, which have been identified to tackle agricultural challenges. The choice of potential LCTs relevant to the case study is based on a literature review of previous empirical studies. Thus, the objectives of the study were to (1) investigate the public perception and preferences of LCTs in rice production of China, and (2) analyze the influences of the factors on farmer's decision in adopting LCTs in rice production. There were 555 farmer surveys from eight representative rice production counties in HP province of southern China, both the Poisson estimators and multivariate probit (MVP) approach were applied in the study. RESULTS Our results show that water-saving irrigation, integrated pest management techniques and planting green manure crops in winter season were the three major LCTs adapted by farmers in rice production. The intensity and probability of LCTs adoptions were influenced by the main factors including farmers' education level, climate change awareness, machinery ownership, technical support and subsidies. There is a significant correlation among the LCTs, and the adoption of the technologies is interdependent, depicting either complementarities or substitutabilities between the practices. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that policies enhance the integration of LCTs would be central to farmers' knowledge, environmental concerns, technical service and financial support in rice production systems in China.

Abstract
Background Human apolipoprotein E (APOE) polymorphisms are attributable to the presence of three common alleles, namely, ε2, ε3, and ε4, which generate six genotypes, viz, E2/E2, E2/E3, E3/E3, E3/E4, E4/E4, and E2/E4. APOE polymorphisms are associated with all types of tumors and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, the relationship between the type of APOE polymorphisms and tumorigenesis remains debatable. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of APOE polymorphisms on the tumor with or without CVD in southern China. Methods A total of 1438 participants were categorized into 4 groups: 409 patients with tumor, 369 patients with CVD, 338 patients with both tumor and CVD, and 322 controls. APOE polymorphisms were determined by genotyping assay. The factors influencing tumor patients with or without CVD were also analyzed by logistic regression analysis. Results The present study involved different types of solid tumors. Lung cancer was the most common cancer (20.2%, 151/747), followed by colorectal (17%, 127/747), esophageal (9.8%, 73/747), and liver (8.7%, 65/747) cancers. E3/E3 was the most frequent genotype, and ɛ3 was the greatest allele frequency in our study population. The frequencies of the E3/E3, E3/E4, E2/E3, E2/E4, E4/E4, and E2/E2 genotypes in tumor patients were 76.97% (575/747), 14.19% (106/747), 6.83% (51/747), 1.2% (9/747), 0.4% (3/747), and 0.4% (3/747), respectively. Tumor patients carrying ε3 with or without CVD showed higher levels of TG, TC, and LDL-C and lower levels of HDL-C compared to the controls carrying ε3. On the other hand, the tumor patients carrying ε4 with or without CVD showed higher levels of TG and LDL-C and lower levels of HDL-C (all P < 0.05). The frequency of APOE ε4 allele and the E3/E4 genotype was relatively greater in tumor or CVD patients (P < 0.001). In addition, ε4 allele acted as an independent risk factor for tumor patients group (P = 0.037, adjusted OR = 1.92, 95% CI 1.04–3.55) and tumor + CVD patients group (P = 0.012, adjusted OR = 2.53, 95% CI 1.22–5.23). Conclusions Individuals carrying ε4 are at a higher risk of tumor with or without CVD, and APOE polymorphisms affect the serum lipid profiles.

Abstract
The historical atmospheric heavy metal pollution of southern China over the past 200 years was explored by analyzing radiometric dating, heavy metals, and Pb isotopes from a sediment core in Huguangyan Maar Lake. Zn, Cd, Sb, Tl, and Pb in the lake are closely related to anthropogenic activities, while Cr and Ni are mainly derived from the weathering of basalt surrounding the lake. Atmospheric Zn, Cd, Sb, and Tl increased rapidly after 1980, consistent with the local industrial development. The increase of atmospheric Pb in southern China occurred earlier than in other regions of China, with the increase after 1850. War and the use of leaded gasoline were the main causes for the rapid increase in atmospheric Pb during 1910-1950. From 1950 to 2000, the input of Pb from anthropogenic activities decreased gradually due to the stable social environment. After 2000, atmospheric Pb continued to rise due to continued industrial development. The three-end-member model of Pb isotopes indicates that coal combustion is the main source of current atmospheric Pb. The proportion of Pb derived from vehicle exhaust emissions reached a peak in the 1960s, then gradually decreased and further reduced with the ban on leaded gasoline after 2000. These results are important in identifying the sources of atmospheric heavy metal pollution and in formulating pollution control strategies.

Abstract
Previous studies demonstrated that short-term exposure to gaseous pollutants (nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3)) had a greater adverse effect on cardiovascular disease. However, little evidence exists regarding the synergy between gaseous pollutants and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, we aimed to estimate the effect of individual gaseous pollutants on hospital admissions for CVD and to explore the possible synergistic effects between gaseous pollutants. Daily hospitalization counts for CVD were collected from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2015. We also collected daily time series on gaseous pollutants from the Environment of the People's Republic of China, including NO2, SO2, and O3. We used distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNMs) to assess the association of individual gaseous pollutants on CVD hospitalization, after controlling for seasonality, day of the week, public holidays, and weather variables. Then, we explored the variability across age and sex groups. In addition, we analyzed the synergistic effects between gaseous pollutants on CVD. Extremely low NO2 and SO2 increase the risk of CVD in all subgroup at lag 7 days. The greatest effect of high concentration of SO2 was observed in male and the elderly (≥ 65 years) at lag 3 days. Greater effects of high concentration of O3 were more pronounced in the young (< 65 years) and female at lag 3 days, while the effect of low concentration of O3 was greater in male and the young (< 65 years) at lag 0 day. We found a synergistic effect between NO2 and SO2 for CVD, as well as between SO2 and O3. The synergistic effects of NO2 and SO2 on CVD were stronger in the elderly (≥ 65) and female. The female was sensitive to synergistic effects of SO2-O3 and NO2-O3. Interestingly, we found that there was a risk of CVD in the susceptible population even for gaseous pollutant concentrations below the National Environmental Quality Standard. The synergy between NO2 and SO2 was significantly associated with cardiovascular disease hospitalization in the elderly (≥ 65). This study provides evidence for the synergistic effect of gaseous pollutants on hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
The southern China coast areas are often invaded by typhoons, probably causing the redistribution of heavy metals in sediments. The knowledge of the influence of typhoons on the redistribution of heavy metals along the coasts is limited. The sea-floor sediments from the Leizhou Peninsula (LP) coast, southern China, were sampled to test the spatial distribution of the heavy metal before and after typhoons Barijat and Mangkhut in 2018. Results indicated that the coast suffered from varying levels of As contamination, while only minor enrichments were found in a few locations for other heavy metals. The pollution level on the western LP coast seemed to be higher than on the eastern coast. All heavy metals were mainly provided by terrigenous materials from the natural processes and were less affected by grain sizes. After the typhoon landings, more oxidation conditions promoted the deposits of As and the adsorption of Mo by MnO2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human adenovirus (HAdV) infection can cause a variety of diseases. It is a major pathogen of pediatric acute respiratory tract infections (ARIs) and can be life-threatening in younger children. We described the epidemiology and subtypes shifting of HAdV among children with ARI in Guangzhou, China. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study of 161,079 children diagnosed with acute respiratory illness at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center between 2010 and 2021. HAdV specimens were detected by real-time PCR and the hexon gene was used for phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS Before the COVID-19 outbreak in Guangzhou, the annual frequency of adenovirus infection detected during this period ranged from 3.92% to 13.58%, with an epidemic peak every four to five years. HAdV demonstrated a clear seasonal distribution, with the lowest positivity in March and peaking during summer (July or August) every year. A significant increase in HAdV cases was recorded for 2018 and 2019, which coincided with a shift in the dominant HAdV subtype from HAdV-3 to HAdV-7. The latter was associated with a more severe disease compared to HAdV-3. The average mortality proportion for children infected with HAdV from 2016 to 2019 was 0.38% but increased to 20% in severe cases. After COVID-19 emerged, HAdV cases dropped to 2.68%, suggesting that non-pharmaceutical interventions probably reduced the transmission of HAdV in the community. CONCLUSION Our study provides the foundation for the understanding of the epidemiology of HAdV and its associated risks in children in Southern China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide. This study aimed to provide prevalence and associated factors data among patients seeking clinic-based STI services for estimating the disease burden of CT. STUDY DESIGN AND METHOD A cross-sectional survey was conducted among patients attending clinics for STI services. Patients' social-demographic and behavioral information was collected and CT infection was determined by nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) with self-collected urine specimens. Associated factors were identified using logistic regression. RESULTS Among the 8,324 participants, the overall prevalence was 9.0% with 10.7% for males and 8.3% for females respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that aged < 24 [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01-1.59], being unmarried (aOR = 1.64, 95%CI = 1.35-2.00), having junior high school or below education level (aOR = 1.47, 95%CI = 1.13-1.91), having no access to health insurance (aOR = 1.27, 95%CI = 1.07-1.51), and being positive for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG, aOR = 4.49, 95%CI = 3.25-6.21) were significantly associated with CT infection. CONCLUSION We found that CT infection is prevalent among patients seeking clinic-based STI services in Southern China. Targeted interventions could be implemented for patients with a higher risk of CT infection including those aged < 24, being unmarried, having junior high school or below education level, having no access to health insurance, and being positive for NG. In addition, routine CT screening could be considered a public health strategy by the government.

Abstract
Background Lipid metabolism disorders play a critical role in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the number of studies on the relationships among blood lipid-related indexes and NAFLD is limited, and few studies have emphasized the comparison of blood lipid-related indexes in the same population to identify the optimal index for NAFLD screening. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among several blood lipid-related indexes and NAFLD, and to find the index with the best screening value for NAFLD. Methods Based on a general health examination at community health service agencies in the Pearl River Delta region of China in 2015, 3239 women were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The relationships among blood lipid-related indexes and NAFLD were assessed separately by constructing multivariate logistic regression models. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate and compare the screening abilities of the indexes for NAFLD. All data analyses were conducted in SPSS and MedCalc software. Results Whether in the crude model or each model adjusted for possible confounding factors, the risk of NAFLD significantly rose with increasing cardiometabolic index (CMI), triglyceride glucose index (TyG), triglycerides (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (TG/HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC) to HDL-C ratio (TC/HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) to HDL-C ratio (LDL-C/HDL-C). Moreover, the area under the curve (AUC) of CMI was 0.744, which was better than that of TyG (0.725), TG/HDL-C (0.715), TC/HDL-C (0.650), and LDL-C/HDL-C (0.644) (P < 0.001). In addition, the optimal cut-off points were 0.62 for CMI, 8.55 for TyG, 1.15 for TG/HDL-C, 4.17 for TC/HDL-C, and 2.22 for LDL-C/HDL-C. Conclusions CMI is easy to obtain, is a recommended index in the screening of NAFLD in women and may be useful for detecting populations that are at high risk of NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but the conclusions of studies are inconsistent in different regions. The present study aims to investigate the role of ApoE genotypes on NAFLD in southern China. METHODS A total of 1064 subjects including 372 NAFLD patients and 692 controls who attended Meizhou People's Hospital located in southern China from March 1, 2016 to April 30, 2020 were enrolled in this study. The ApoE genotypes were detected and the laboratory parameters were examined. RESULTS Significant differences were observed between NAFLD patients and controls in the prevalence of ε3/ε3 (p < 0.001) and ε3/ε4 (p = 0.004). NAFLD patients presented higher frequency of ε4 allele than controls (p = 0.013). Logistic regression analysis suggested that ε3/ε3 was an independent risk factor (OR: 1.435, 95% CI: 1.084-1.891, p = 0.010), while ε3/ε4 was an independent protective factor (OR: 0.578, 95% CI: 0.404-0.828, p = 0.003) for development of NAFLD. In addition, allele ε4 showed a protective effect on NAFLD with an adjusted OR of 0.588 (95% CI: 0.420-0.824, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Our results suggested that ApoE genotype was associated with the development of NAFLD in the population of southern China. Individuals carrying ε3/ε3 were at higher risk of NAFLD, while those carrying ε3/ε4 were at lower risk of NAFLD.

Abstract
Background The relationship between the APOE gene polymorphism and lipid profiles and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains controversial. The current study purposed to investigate how the APOE gene SNPs (rs429358 and rs7412) and lipid profile are associated with the risk for AF among the Hakka population in southern China. Methods Finally, 1367 patients were enrolled in this study, including 706 participants with AF (41 ~ 98 years old, 58.64 % male) and 661 non-AF subjects (28 ~ 95 years old, 59.46 % male). The collected data included baseline characteristics, medical history, laboratory tests and echocardiography parameters. A general linear model (two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA)) and Tukey post-hoc tests were applied to identify an APOE allele, AF group, and interaction effect on lipid profiles. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for AF. Results For AF group, the most common genotype was E3/E3 (53.82 %), followed by E3/E4 (28.19 %), E2/E3 (13.60 %), E4/E4 (1.98 %), E2/E4 (1.84 %) and E2/E2 (0.57 %). The two-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey procedure showed the following: the lipid levels depended significantly on AF and APOE allele groups for TG, TC, LDL-C and Apo-B (all P < 0.001), and statistically significant interactions between AF and APOE allele were observed in the above 4 variables (all P < 0.05). Multivariate regression analysis indicated that age ≥ 65years (P < 0.001), high diastolic blood pressure (DBP ≥ 90mm Hg, P = 0.018), a high levels of total cholesterol (TC ≥ 5.2mmol/L, P < 0.001) and triglyceride (TG ≥ 1.7mmol/L, P = 0.028), but not the two SNPs of the APOE gene (rs7412 and rs429358) (OR 1.079, P = 0.683), were significant independent risk factors for AF in the study population. Conclusions The principal findings of this study showed that individuals at high risk for AF were those over 65 years of age, higher DBP as well as high levels of TC and TG among the southern China Hakka population. The levels of TG, TC, LDL-C and Apo-B depended significantly on AF and APOE allele groups, and statistically significant interactions between AF and APOE allele were observed in the above 4 variables, although the APOE gene SNPs (rs429358 and rs7412) were no significant risk for AF incidence. Further investigation is needed to elucidate whether other SNPs of the APOE gene have a bearing on AF incidents.

Abstract
During a routine test, we identified a 38-year-old man who had a positive hematology screening result but was negative for hot spot variants of his thalassemia gene. Further analysis identified β-50 (HBB: c.-100G>A). It was first suggested that β-50 was a β+ -thal allele, and some research groups suggested this allele was a silent β-thal allele. To fully understand the hematological phenotype of the β-50 allele, we screened for individuals carrying β-50 in the general population and performed hematology analysis on these carriers. A real-time PCR detection system was designed to verify samples carrying β-50 . Twenty-one thousand samples and 43 pedigree samples were screened, and 86 β-50 carriers were detected. We performed hematological analysis on 65 individuals older than 3 years who had normal serum ferritin and analyzed the data. A total of 34.62% of the β-50 /βN individuals had mean cellular volume (MCV) or mean cellular hemoglobin (MCH) values slightly lower than the positive cutoff value of screening; the β-50 carriers' Hb A2 value was slightly elevated. According to the test results, β-50 carriers have slight changes in hematology parameters, including slight decreases in MCV and MCH and slight increases in Hb A2 ; however, these effects do not reach the degree of traditional β+ alleles. Females with genotype β-50 /β0 show a degree of decline in hematological indicators during pregnancy. Therefore, we should describe β-50 as a β++ thalassemia allele, and identification of β-50 can explain slight changes in hematological indicators in some carriers.

Abstract
Beta (β)-thalassemia is one of the most common hemoglobinopathies worldwide, creating major public health problems and social burdens in many regions. Screening for β-thalassemia carriers is crucial for controlling this condition. To investigate the effectiveness of mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) for screening β-thalassemia, retrospective data were analyzed for 6,779 β-thalassemia carriers subjected to genetic testing following thalassemia screening in Guangdong province between January 2018 and December 2019. Prevalent mutations observed included CD41/42 (-TTCT) (38.43%), IVS-II-654 (C > T) (25.71%), -28 (A > G) (15.78%), CD17 (AAG > TAG) (10.03%), and β E (GAG > AAG) (3.13%). In the β 0, β +, and HbE groups, MCV values were 63.8 ± 4.2 fL, 67.0 ± 5.5 fL, and 75.8 ± 5.6 fL, while MCH values were 20.1 ± 1.4 pg, 21.2 ± 1.9 pg, and 24.8 ± 2.0 pg, respectively. Among β-thalassemia carriers, 85 (1.25%) and 28 (0.41%) individuals had MCV ≥ 80 fL and MCH ≥ 27 pg, respectively. Using a combination of MCV and MCH reduced the number of false negative screenings to 15 (0.22%). Therefore, evaluating both MCV and MCH is strongly recommended for screening β-thalassemia carriers.

Abstract
Human death and life span are closely related to the geographical environment and regional lifestyle. These factors considerably vary among counties and regions, leading to the geographical disparity of disease. Quantitative studies on this phenomenon are insufficient. Cerebrovascular and heart diseases are the leading causes of death. The mortality rate of cerebrovascular and heart diseases is statistically higher in northern China than in southern China; the p-value of t-test for cerebrovascular and heart diseases was 0.047 and 0.000, respectively. The population attribution fraction of 12 major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in each province was calculated based on their exposure and relative risk. The results found that residents in northern China consume high sodium-containing food, fewer vegetables, and less sea food products, and tend to be overweight. Fine particulate matter is higher in northern China than in southern China. Cold temperatures also cause a greater number of deaths than hot temperatures. All these factors have resulted in a higher CVD mortality rate in northern China. The attributive differential for sodium, vegetable, fruit, smoking, PM2.5, omega-3, obesity, low temperature, and high temperature of heart disease between the two parts of China is 9.1, 0.7, -2.5, 0.1, 1.4, 1.3, 2.0, 4.7, and -2.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the attributive differential for the above factors of cerebrovascular disease between the two parts of China is 8.7, 0.0, -5.2, 0.1, 1.0, 0.0, 2.4, 4.7, and -2.1%. Diet high in sodium is the leading cause of the north-south differential in CVD, resulting in 0.71 less years of life expectancy in northern compared with that in southern China.

Abstract
A new ellimmichthyiform, Guiclupea superstes, gen. et sp. nov., from the Oligocene Ningming Formation of Ningming Basin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, South China is described herein. With relatively large body size, parietals meeting at the midline, anterior ceratohyal with a beryciform foramen in the center, a complete predorsal scutes series of very high number and about equally-size scutes with radiating ridges on dorsal surface, first preural centrum unfused with first uroneural but fused with the parhypural, and first ural centrum of roughly the same size as the preural centrum, Guiclupea superstes cannot be assigned to the order Clupeiformes. The phylogenetic analyses using parsimony and Bayesian inference methods with Chanos/Elops as outgroup respectively suggests that the new form is closer to ellimmichthyiform genus Diplomystus than to any other fishes, although there are some discrepancies between the two criteria and different outgroups used. It shares with Diplomystus the high supraoccipital crest, pelvic-fin insertion in advance of dorsal fin origin, and the number of predorsal scutes more than 20. The new form represents the youngest ellimmichthyiform fish record in the world. Its discovery indicates that the members of the Ellimmichthyiformes had a wider distribution range and a longer evolutional history than previously known.

Abstract
Aims The aim of the present study was to investigate mutation status of the cKit and PDGFRA genes in patients with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Methods In total, 96 patients with a GIST were included in the study, in which polymerase chain reaction amplification and gene sequencing were used to detect the sequences of exons 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, and 18 in KIT and exons 12, 14, and 18 in PDGFRA. Results KIT mutations were detected in 65 cases (67.71%), of which 81.54% (53/65) were located on exon 11, 12.31% (8/65) were located on exon 9, 4.61% (3/65) were located on exon 17, which included a concomitant mutation of exon 9 and 11, and 4.08% (2/65) were located on exon 13, which included a concomitant mutation on exon 11. The most common mutation in exon 11 was deletion, which accounted for 77.36% (41/53) of the cases, followed by a point mutation observed in 22.64% (12/53) of the cases. Among the 31 GIST cases without a KIT mutation, a mutation in PDGFRA was detected in 5 cases (5.21%, 5/96; 16.13%, 5/31). With respect to gender, age, tumor max diameter, tumor position, and mitotic index, there were no significant differences between KIT/PDGFRA mutations and non-mutations. Conclusions GIST mainly occurs in the stomach, and the cytological morphology is mainly spindle cells, and the mutations mainly occur in KIT genes. We need a large sample size to analyze the regularity of GIST gene mutations in Hakka population and understand the independent prognostic correlation of all KIT/PDGFRA genotypes.

Abstract
Suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) and sedimentary total organic carbon (TOC) in coastal areas play critical roles in the global carbon cycle, yet sources and dynamics of coastal POC and TOC have been affected by various anthropogenic activities such as aquaculture, sewage discharge, dam construction and land reclamation. To better understand the anthropogenic impacts on coastal organic carbon, this study was carried out in a representative semi-enclosed bay, Dongshan Bay, Southeast China. Through analyses of stable isotopic compositions of both POC (δ13CPOC and δ15NPN) and TOC (δ13CTOC and δ15NTN), the ratio of total organic carbon vs. total nitrogen (C/N), grain size, Chl-a concentrations and hydrological parameters, our study led to the following main findings: 1) During flood season, the distribution of δ13CPOC, δ13CTOC, δ15NPN and δ15NTN values within the bay did not follow the conventional land-sea transition pattern. This distribution pattern indicated more terrestrial organic matter input seaward, which contrasts with the conventional organic matter distribution along the estuarine gradient. 2) Using the organic δ13C, δ15N and C/N signatures of different endmembers, we found that the sources of organic matter deposited in the bay were strongly related to anthropogenic activities, including municipal wastewater discharge, aquaculture, land reclamation and sluice-dyke construction. Furthermore, 3) by applying the Grain Size Trend Analysis Model and the previously-estimated residual current directions, we suggested that human activities have not only altered the sources of organic matter to the semi-enclosed bays, but also significantly modified their transportation and deposition patterns, and might influence the ultimate fate of organic matter into and out of Dongshan Bay. The conclusions of this study should be applicable to similar coastal bays around the world.

Abstract
Background: Emerging third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (3GCR-EB) pose global healthcare concern. This study assessed the in-hospital mortality attributed to 3GCR-EB.Methods: The study cohort comprised inpatients with community-onset or healthcare-associated infection caused by Enterobacteriaceae in three tertiary-care public hospitals in 2017. In-hospital mortality was compared between 3GCR-EB infected patients and third-generation cephalosporin-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae (3GCS-EB) infected patients using competing risk survival models.Results: Of 2,343 study patients (median age 60 years; 45.2% male), 1,481 (63.2%) had 3GCS-EB and 862 (36.8%) 3GCR-EB infection. 494 (57.0%) 3GCR-EB isolates were co-resistant to fluoroquinolones and 15 (1.7%) to carbapenems. In-hospital mortality was similar in 3GCS-EB and 3GCR-EB infections (2.4% vs. 2.8%; p = 0.601). No increase in the hazard of in-hospital mortality was detected for 3GCR-EB compared to 3GCS-EB infection (sub-distribution hazard ratio [HR] 0.80; 95%CI, 0.41-1.55) adjusting for patient age, sex, intensive care admission, origin of infection and site of infection. Analysis of cause-specific hazards showed that 3GCR-EB infections significantly decreased the daily rate of hospital discharge (cause-specific HR = 0.84; 95%CI, 0.76-0.92) leading to lengthier hospitalizations.Conclusion: 3GCR-EB infection per se was not associated with increased in-hospital mortality in this study, but placed significant healthcare burden by increasing the length of hospitalization.

Abstract
Background Nowadays, the heterogeneity of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has attracted extensive attention. The histological patterns and clinical characteristics may vary greatly in different areas and among different groups of people. Prior studies found a shift from the neutrophilic inflammatory pattern to the eosinophilic inflammatory pattern in Asian cities. This study set out with the aim of investigating the changes that have occurred in the past 18 years of southern China and exploring the causes. Methods Tissues, clinical, and demographic characteristics were obtained from 473 patients (91 in 2000–2001, 170 in 2010–2011, 212 in 2017–2018) who satisfied the criteria of diffuse (bilateral) chronic rhinosinusitis. The clinical characteristics, including the previous history of allergic rhinitis and asthma, and the major symptoms of rhinosinusitis, were collected. Formalin-fixed nasal tissue was obtained from each patient for calculating inflammatory cells. We also performed immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression levels of eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP), IgE, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and other Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 related inflammatory cytokines. Results The comorbidity of asthma and atopic disease was higher in 2017–2018 compared to 2000–2001. The histological characteristics revealed a significant increase in tissue eosinophils and decrease in neutrophils in 2017–2018 as compared with 2000–2001. Meanwhile, the proportion of eosinophilic CRS (eCRS) increased significantly from 2000 to 2001 to 2017–2018 (P = 0.03). The tissue eosinophil increase was higher in overweight patients (Body Mass Index, BMI≥24) as compared with non-overweight. There was an increasing trend of ECP, IL-13 and IL-17. Besides, IFN-γ and TNF-α decreased. Conclusions There was an eosinophilic shift of diffuse rhinosinusitis inflammatory pattern in southern China over the last 18 years. The proportion of eCRS and difficult-to-treat rhinosinusitis has steadily increased, which is associated with the increase of Type 2, Type 3 cytokines and the decrease of Type 1 cytokines. This study also provided firstly evidence of a strong relationship between overweight and eosinophil shift in the southern Chinese population.

Abstract
Species invasion is an important cause of global biodiversity decline and is often mediated by shifts in environmental conditions such as climate change. To investigate this relationship, a mechanistic Dynamic Energy Budget model (DEB) approach was used to predict how climate change may affect spread of the invasive mussel Mytilopsis sallei, by predicting variation in the total reproductive output of the mussel under different scenarios. To achieve this, the DEB model was forced with present-day satellite data of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), and SST under two warming RCP scenarios and decreasing current Chl-a levels, to predict future responses. Under both warming scenarios, the DEB model predicted the reproductive output of M. sallei would enhance range extension of the mussel, especially in regions south of the Yangtze River when future declines in Chl-a were reduced by less than 10%, whereas egg production was inhibited when Chl-a decreased by 20-30%. The decrease in SST in the Yangtze River may, however, be a natural barrier to the northward expansion of M. sallei, with colder temperatures resulting in a strong decrease in egg production. Although the invasion path of M. sallei may be inhibited northwards by the Yangtze River, larger geographic regions south of the Yangtze River run the risk of invasion, with subsequent negative impacts on aquaculture through competition for food with farmed bivalves and damaging aquaculture facilities. Using a DEB model approach to characterise the life history traits of M. sallei, therefore, revealed the importance of food availability and temperature on the reproductive output of this mussel and allowed evaluation of the invasion risk for specific regions. DEB is, therefore, a powerful predictive tool for risk management of already established invasive populations and to identify regions with a high potential invasion risk.

Abstract
Ticks and tick-borne rickettsial diseases have been gaining greater attention in China over the past decade. However, most published studies to date have occurred in Northern China, with limited investigations occurring in China's southern provinces. As part of larger surveillance efforts, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in six sites at Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan investigating rickettsial infection in ticks. A total of 581 ticks were collected from hosts and screened via PCR, targeting rrs, gltA, ompB, sca4, and ompA gene fragments. Two of 12 Haemaphysalis formosensis ticks were infected with novel Rickettsia strain GD01, which was closest phylogenetically (97.3-98.9 % identity) to Rickettsia tamurae strain AT-1, but not within the same clade. Another detected strain (GD02) shared similar identity, 99-100 % across four gene targets, to recently detected Candidatus Rickettsia longicornii isolate ROK-HL727, with an overall prevalence of 12.5 % (71/569). The presence of such pathogens calls for increased public health attention and active surveillance in patients reporting recent tick bites.

Abstract
Blastocystis is one of the most common causative agents of intestinal diseases, which can cause enteric diseases in animals and humans. However, limited data is available on the prevalence or subtypes of Blastocystis infections in farmed pigs in southern China. In this study, a total of 396 fecal samples were collected from farmed pigs in three provinces in southern China in 2016, and screened for Blastocystis by PCR amplification of the small subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA) gene fragment. One hundred and seventy (42.93%) of the examined fecal samples were detected Blastocystis-positive, and two known zoonotic subtypes ST1 and ST5 were identified, with ST5 being the predominate subtype. Moreover, gender, age and region were considered as risk factors that associated with Blastocystis infection in farmed pigs. The present study revealed the prevalence and subtypes of Blastocystis infections in farmed pigs in southern China, which provided essential data for the control of Blastocystis infections in pigs, other animals and humans in China.

Abstract
Emerging artemisinin resistance in Southeast Asia poses a significant risk to malaria control and eradication goals, including China’s plan to eliminate malaria nationwide by 2020. Plasmodium falciparum was endemic in China, especially in Southern China. Parasites from this region have shown decreased susceptibility to artemisinin and delayed parasite clearance after artemisinin treatment. Understanding the genetic basis of artemisinin resistance and identifying specific genetic loci associated with this phenotype is crucial for surveillance and containment of resistance. In this study, parasites were collected from clinical patients from Yunnan province and Hainan island. The parasites were genotyped using a P. falciparum-specific single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray. The SNP profiles examined included a total of 27 validated and candidate molecular markers of drug resistance. The structure of the parasite population was evaluated by principal component analysis by using the EIGENSOFT program, and ADMIXTURE was used to calculate maximum likelihood estimates for the substructure analysis. Parasites showed a high prevalence of resistance haplotypes of pfdhfr and pfdhps and moderate prevalence of pfcrt. There was no mutation identified on pfmdr1. Candidate SNPs on chromosomes 10, 13, and 14 that were associated with delayed parasite clearance showed a low prevalence of mutants. Parasites from Southern China were clustered and separated from those from Southeast Asia. Parasites from Yunnan province were substructured from parasites from Hainan island. This study provides evidence for a genomic population with drug resistance in Southern China and also illustrates the utility of SNP microarrays for large-scale parasite molecular epidemiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stripe rust, caused by the fungal pathogen Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a serious foliar disease of wheat. Identification of novel stripe rust resistance genes and cultivation of resistant cultivars are considered to be the most effective approaches to control this disease. In this study, we evaluated the infection type (IT), disease severity (DS) and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) of 143 Chinese wheat landrace accessions for stripe rust resistance. Assessments were undertaken in five environments at the adult-plant stage with Pst mixture races under field conditions. In addition, IT was assessed at the seedling stage with two prevalent Pst races (CYR32 and CYR34) under a controlled greenhouse environment. RESULTS Seventeen accessions showed stable high-level resistance to stripe rust across all environments in the field tests. Four accessions showed resistance to the Pst races CYR32 and CYR34 at the seedling stage. Combining phenotypic data from the field and greenhouse trials with 6404 markers that covered the entire genome, we detected 17 quantitative trait loci (QTL) on 11 chromosomes for IT associated with seedling resistance and 15 QTL on seven chromosomes for IT, final disease severity (FDS) or AUDPC associated with adult-plant resistance. Four stable QTL detected on four chromosomes, which explained 9.99-23.30% of the phenotypic variation, were simultaneously associated with seedling and adult-plant resistance. Integrating a linkage map of stripe rust resistance in wheat, 27 QTL overlapped with previously reported genes or QTL, whereas four and one QTL conferring seedling and adult-plant resistance, respectively, were mapped distantly from previously reported stripe rust resistance genes or QTL and thus may be novel resistance loci. CONCLUSIONS Our results provided an integrated overview of stripe rust resistance resources in a wheat landrace diversity panel from the southern autumn-sown spring wheat zone of China. The identified resistant accessions and resistance loci will be useful in the ongoing effort to develop new wheat cultivars with strong resistance to stripe rust.

Abstract
China has been performing nationwide social lockdown by releasing the Level 1 response to major public health emergencies (RMPHE) to struggle against the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak since late January 2020. During the Level 1 RMPHE, social production and public transport were maintained at minimal levels, and residents stayed in and worked from home. The universal impact of anthropogenic activities on air pollution can be evaluated by comparing it with air quality under such extreme conditions. We investigated the concentration of both gaseous and particulate pollutants and aerosol light absorption at different levels of (RMPHE) in an urban area of southwestern China. During the lockdown, PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NOx, and BC decreased by 30-50%, compared to the pre-Level 1 RMPHE period. Meanwhile, the decrease of NOx caused the rise of O3 by up to 2.3 times due to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) limitation. The aerosol light absorption coefficient at multiple wavelengths decreased by 50%, and AAE decreased by 20% during the Level 1 RMPHE. BrC played essential roles in light absorption after the RMPHE was announced, accounting for 54.0% of the aerosol absorption coefficient at 370 nm. Moreover, the lockdown down-weighted the fraction of fossil fuel in BC concentrations to 0.43 (minima). This study characterizes air pollution at the most basic level and can provide policymakers with references for the "baseline."

Abstract
The association between inflammatory properties of diet and ovarian cancer risk has been investigated in some Western populations. However, little evidence is available from Asian women whose ovarian cancer incidence rates are low and dietary and lifestyle patterns are very different from their Western counterparts. We aimed to examine whether more pro-inflammatory diets, as indicated by higher dietary inflammatory index (DII®) scores, are associated with increased odds of epithelial ovarian cancer in southern China. A case-control study was conducted during 2006-2008 in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) scores were calculated based on dietary intake assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire administered to 500 incident epithelial ovarian cancer patients and 500 hospital-based controls. Logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between E-DII scores and odds of ovarian cancer. Positive associations were observed between higher E-DII scores and ovarian cancer odds, using both continuous DII scores (odds ratio (OR) 1.87; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.65, 2.13) and by DII tertiles (ORtertile3vs1 7.04, 95% CI: 4.70, 10.54, p for trend < 0.001). Likewise, a more pro-inflammatory diet was associated with a higher chance of serous and mucinous ovarian tumors. Our results suggest that a pro-inflammatory diet was associated with increased odds of developing epithelial ovarian cancer in southern Chinese women. The findings add to epidemiological evidence for the role of dietary inflammatory potential in ovarian cancer development.

Abstract
PURPOSE X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most common inherited renal phosphate wasting disorder and is often misdiagnosed as vitamin D deficiency. This study aims to provide clinical and mutational characteristics of 65 XLH pediatric patients in southern China. METHODS In this work, a combination of DNA sequencing and qPCR analysis was used to study the PHEX gene in 80 pediatric patients diagnosed with hypophosphatemia. The clinical and laboratory data of confirmed 65 XLH patients were assessed and analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS In 65 XLH patients from 61 families, 51 different variants in the PHEX gene were identified, including 23 previously reported variants and 28 novel variants. In this cohort of XLH patients, the c.1601C>T(p.Pro534Leu) variant appears more frequently. Fourteen uncommon XLH cases were described, including four boys with de novo mosaic variants, eight patients with large deletions and a pair of monozygotic twins. The clinical manifestations in this cohort are very similar to those previously reported. CONCLUSION This study extends the mutational spectrum of the PHEX gene, which will contribute to accurate diagnosis. This study also suggests a supplementary qPCR or MLPA assay may be performed along with classical sequencing to confirm the gross insertion/deletion.

Abstract
A previously unidentified chicken parvovirus (ChPV) and turkey parvovirus (TuPV) strain, associated with runting-stunting syndrome (RSS) and poultry enteritis and mortality syndrome (PEMS) in turkeys, is now prevalent among chickens in China. In this study, a large-scale surveillance of parvoviruses in chickens and turkeys using conserved PCR assays was performed. We assessed the prevalence of ChPV/TuPV in commercial chicken and turkey farms in China between 2014 and 2019. Parvoviruses were prevalent in 51.73% (1,795/3,470) of commercial chicken and turkey farms in Guangxi, China. The highest frequency of ChPV positive samples tested by PCR occurred in chickens that were broiler chickens 64.18% (1,041/1,622) compared with breeder chickens 38.75% (572/1,476) and layer hens 38.89% (112/288), and TuPV was detected in 70/84 (83.33%). Native and exotic chicken species were both prevalent in commercial farms in southern China, and exotic broiler chickens had a higher positive rate with 88.10% (148/168), while native chickens were 50.00% (1,465/2,930). The environmental samples from poultry houses tested positive for ChPV and TuPV were 47.05% (415/874). Samples from open house flocks had higher prevalence rates of ChPV than those of closed house flocks (Table 5), among which those from the open house showed 84.16% (85/101) positivity, those from litter showed 62.86% (44/70) positivity, and those from drinking water showed 50.00% (56/112) positivity, whereas those from the closed house litter were 53.57% (60/112), those from swabs were 50.18% (138/275), and those from drinking water were 15.69% (32/204). Samples collected during spring were more frequently ChPV/ TuPV positive than those collected during other seasons. This study is the first report regarding the epidemiological surveillance of ChPV and TuPV in chicken/turkey flocks in Guangxi, China. Our results suggest that ChPV and TuPV are widely distributed in commercial fowl in Guangxi. These findings highlight the need for further epidemiological and genetic research on ChPV and TuPV in this area.

Abstract
In Southern China, rice-oil rotations occur on soils with high levels of cadmium (Cd) and low levels of available boron (B). Boron can alleviate Cd toxicity, as it affects the plant cell wall structures and the components that block the entry of Cd into the cytoplasm; however, these mechanisms are not well understood. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), fluorescent probe dye, electron microscope, ion abundance (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), metabonomics and transcriptomics were used in the study, and we found that under Cd stress, B increased root pectin content by affecting the biosynthesis pathways and decreasing the activity of pectinase and the expression levels of related genes. The increased pectin content and pectin demethylation increased the chelation of Cd onto the cell walls and reduced the levels of Cd entering the organelles. Application of B to the roots decreased the amounts of cellulose and hemicellulose in the cell walls to normal levels and promoted the expression of genes from the expansin, xyloglucan endotransglucosylase, and α-xylosidase families. This contributed to cell wall integrity and root flexibility. Consequently, the accumulation of reactive oxygen species was inhibited and cell viability in the roots was increased, which reduced the destruction of root surface structures. These results have improved our understanding of how B participates in chelation of Cd onto cell walls and in maintaining cell wall integrity, thereby improving Cd toxicity resistance in rapeseed roots.

Abstract
In southern China, Brassica napus (rapeseed) is a widely planted oilseed crop in rice-rapeseed rotation systems with characteristically high levels of cadmium (Cd) and low levels of available boron (B). Current knowledge of the ameliorative effects of B on Cd toxicity in plants mainly concerns plant growth, Cd uptake, and Cd translocation, while little attention has been paid to the role of B on plant antioxidant enzyme systems and cell wall chelation of Cd. We explored the mechanisms whereby B improves rapeseed Cd resistance. Application of B alleviated Cd-induced oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the shoots of Cd-treated plants, by increasing the activity of the major antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase. Moreover, the shoots of rapeseed plants supplied with B under Cd toxicity had higher ionic soluble pectin (ISP) content, thereby providing more Cd-binding sites in pectin, as well as higher methylesterase activity. However, no changes in covalent soluble pectin were observed. In addition, B also induced higher cellulose in Cd-toxic shoots, thus promoting Cd chelation onto cell walls. Fourier infrared spectrum analysis confirmed that the addition of B increased protein, pectin, cellulose, and carbohydrate content in the cell walls of Cd-toxic leaves. In conclusion, B can mitigate Cd phytotoxicity by alleviating oxidative stress and immobilizing Cd on the ISP and cellulose of shoot cell walls, thereby playing a potential role in improving the growth potential of crops and Cd phytoremediation. The results also provide a theoretical basis for alleviating Cd toxicity in crops and development of Cd-tolerant varieties.

Abstract
Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), induced by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes acute diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and high mortality in neonatal piglets, resulting in significant economic losses in the pig industries. In this study, an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) based on a EuNPs-mAb fluorescent probe was developed and optimized for rapid detection of PEDV. The limit of detection (LOD) of the ICA was 0.218 μg/mL (2.725 × 103 TCID50/mL) and its linear detection range was 0.03125-8 μg/mL (3.91 × 102-105 TCID50/mL). The ICA was also validated for the detection of PEDV in swine stool samples. 60 swine stool samples from southern China were analyzed by the ICA and RT-PCR, and the results showed that the coincidence rate of the ICA to RT-PCR was 86.67%, which was significantly higher than that of AuNPs based ICA. The ICA is sensitive and specific and can achieve on-site rapid detection of swine stool samples. Therefore, the ICA has a great potential for PED diagnosis and prevention.

Abstract
Different types of fish taxa generally seem to present diverse phylogeographic structures and show different responses to environmental changes. In southern China, however, a large number of phylogeographic studies have been employed for small and/or benthic fish species, while phylogeographic patterns of larger and migratory species are not well understood. In this study, we chose Megalobrama terminalis, an endemic cyprinid from Southern China with a median size and relatively high migratory potential as a candidate to explore the phylogeographic structure and to seek the relevant driving forces using a multilocus approach (two mitochondrial markers and three nuclear markers). Our results show that M. terminalis exhibits three mtDNA genetic groups, each presenting genetic structure to the local geography, but the differentiation level was much weaker than that of small and/or benthic fish species reported in earlier studies. Nuclear loci did not observe pronounced genetic group subdivision, but did examine noteworthy genetic differentiation between the Hainan Island population and the mainland populations. Divergence time estimation and demographic analyses suggest that sea-level changes associated with the Late Pleistocene glacial cycles have exerted pronounced effects on the divergence of the three groups and the expansion of M. terminalis populations. Above all, our study provides important knowledge that can be used to improve monitoring programs and develop a conservation strategy for this endemic organism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dengue has been a serious public health burden and dengue virus-1 (DENV-1) is the predominant strain in Guangdong province, China. Differences exist in the transmission dynamics amongAedes albopictus and DENV in different geographical regions. However, little is known about the vector competence of indigenous Aedes albopictus for the predominant dengue strain in Guangdong province, China. METHODOLOGY In this study, the field-derivedAedes albopictus collected from Guangzhou city, Guangdong province were infected with the predominant DENV endemic strain DENV-1 GZ201401 by feeding on serially diluted artificial infectious blood or infected suckling mice. DENV-infected mosquitoes were evaluated for viral load at five-time intervals in three tissues, the head, body and legs using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). The vertical transmission of DENV in Ades albopictus was also analysed. Suckling mice were used to assess the transmission of DENV by Aedes albopictus. RESULTS There was no difference in infection rates between mosquitoes infected by infected suckling mice or by artificial infectious blood. The proportion of DENV-1 positive mosquitoes increased over time after an infectious blood meal, but there was no difference in the positive rate beyond 7days after the blood meal. The positive rate of DENV-1 infected mosquitoes increased with the DENV titer in the blood meal. Most of the infections the infected mosquitoes were disseminated more than 7 days after imbibing the artificial infectious blood. The median infective doses (MID50) at 7,14,21 and 28 days after artificial infectious blood meal [7, 14, 21 and 28 days post-infection (dpi)] were 7.86 × 107, 1.57 × 107, 6.39 × 106 and 4.96 × 106 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose)/ml, respectively. The mosquitoes can spread DENV-1 GZ201401 to hosts as early as 3 dpi. The vertical transmission of DENV-1 was documented with a cumulative rate of 17.61%. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are competent vectors for DENV-1, and are capable of maintaining autochthonous dengue outbreaks in Guangdong province, China, which may have been promoted by vertical transmission.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE According to several studies, liver enzymes levels are associated with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels. However, the association stratified by body mass index (BMI) remains to be elucidated, especially in Southern China. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between liver enzymes levels and FPG levels stratified by BMI in Southern China. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING 3056 individuals participated in real-time interviews and blood tests in Southern China. Participants were divided into three groups (underweight, normal weight and overweight or obesity) based on BMI cut-offs. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURED Partial correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between FPG levels and liver tests. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to calculate the adjusted ORs for FPG levels based on liver enzymes levels. RESULTS There was no association between liver enzymes and FPG either in the underweight group or in the normal weight group; however, a significant correlation was observed in the overweight or obesity group (alanine transaminase (ALT), p<0.01; aspartate aminotransferase (AST), p<0.05). After adjusting for confounding factors, the highest tertiles of ALT still remained significantly positively related to FPG levels in the overweight or obesity group, with an OR of 2.205 (95% CI 1.442 to 3.371) for the 5.56≤FPG<7.00 mmol/L vs the FPG<5.56 mmol/L group and with an OR of 2.297 (95% CI 1.017 to 5.187) for the FPG≥7.00 mmol/L vs the FPG<5.56 mmol/L group, but this correlation was not found for AST. CONCLUSIONS The association of liver enzymes levels with FPG levels differed based on different BMI cut-offs. ALT levels were significantly positively associated with FPG levels in the overweight or obesity group, but not in the other two groups; AST levels were not associated with FPG levels in any group.

Abstract
Notodasus Fauchald, 1972 is a small genus of the polychaete family Capitellidae, including 10 described species worldwide. The genus is unusual in the Central Indo-Pacific, and there is no taxonomic record of Notodasus in this region. In this study, two new species of Notodasus are described and illustrated, namely Notodasus celebensis sp. nov. and N. chinensis sp. nov. The former species, collected from the mixed-species seagrass beds in the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, is mainly characterized by the longitudinally striated epithelium on thoracic segments and the completely separated notopodial lobes. The latter species, obtained from coastal waters off southern China, differs from its congeners with the following characters: tessellated epithelium present on anterior thorax as well as on the dorsum of chaetigers 11 and 12, notopodial lobes fused and chaetal fascicles almost touching each other on anterior abdomen, and branchial pores evident from anterior abdomen. Comparisons are made with closely related species in this paper, and a revised key is provided to all described Notodasus species. The descriptions of the two new species represent the first record of Notodasus in this region and expand the geographical distribution of the genus.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a major constraint to the survival and productivity of animals. In southern China, goats are the most important small domestic ruminants. METHODS From May 2013 to May 2017, we conducted a longitudinal study of hircine GIN infections in Huangshantou Town, Gongan County, Hubei Province, China, using fecal egg counts. RESULTS Our investigation revealed that the GINs of goats in Hubei Province have changed significantly. Over 90% of eggs detected in the first month of investigation, May 2013, belonged to the species Haemonchus contortus and Chabertia sp. There was no seasonal variation in positive rates (PRs) of GINs, but the mean eggs per gram (EPG) of GINs were higher between April and July than between September and November (P < 0.05). The gradual increase in the percentage of H. contortus eggs among all detected eggs during our research and the low cure rate of IVM mass treatment revealed the emergence of IVM resistance in H. contortus. After the implementation of an integrated GIN control strategy, which included two mass treatments (one in April/May with ABZ and another in September/October with IVM + ABZ), in 2016 and 2017, both the PRs and EPG of GINs were significantly reduced. CONCLUSION The results presented here reveal that controlling GINs of small ruminants in small farms in southern China requires an integrated control strategy that should include monitoring of infection and anthelmintic resistance, and increased farmer education on the importance of using the appropriate drugs at the correct dose.

Abstract
Accurate quantification of the emission of CO2 from streams and rivers is one of the primary challenges in determining the global carbon budget because our knowledge of the spatial and seasonal heterogeneity on these CO2 emissions is limited. In karst areas, the groundwater-stream continuum is likely ubiquitous because the carbon-rich groundwater discharges into some of the streams through springs or subterranean streams, which results in more complex spatial and seasonal variations in the CO2 emissions. To address this issue, the spatial and seasonal characteristics of partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), the δ13CDIC, and the CO2 emission flux of the Guancun surface stream (GSS) karst groundwater-stream continuum in southern China were investigated from the stream head (groundwater outlet) to the downstream mouth during the 2014-2017 period. Our results reveal that the pCO2 and CO2 emissions exhibit high spatial and seasonal heterogeneities over ~ 1300 m in the GSS. Spatially, the pCO2 and CO2 emissions decrease sharply from the stream head (mean 8818.4 μatm for pCO2 and mean 423.4 mg m-2 h-1 for CO2 emission) to the site farthest downstream (mean 2752.7 μatm for pCO2 and 257.0 mg m-2 h-1 for CO2 emission). Except for the dates when extreme rainfall occurred, the pCO2 and CO2 emission values were higher in the rainy season than in the dry season. This suggests that in a groundwater-stream continuum, CO2 emission occurs very soon after the water is transferred from the karst groundwater to the surface water. We estimate that the total amount of CO2 released to the atmosphere from the GSS is 21.75 t CO2/year, which is only 1.71-5.62% of the dissolved inorganic carbon loss flux in the GSS during the study period. It is important to note that the measured CO2 emission and pCO2 levels decrease farther downstream, so carbon loss is underestimated when it is calculated using downstream sampling points. Therefore, accurate assessments of the CO2 emission flux need to take into consideration the high spatio-temporal heterogeneity in order to reduce the bias of the entire CO2 emission flux.

Abstract
Human interaction with animals has been implicated as a primary risk factor for several high impact zoonoses, including many bat-origin viral diseases. However the animal-to-human spillover events that lead to emerging diseases are rarely observed or clinically examined, and the link between specific interactions and spillover risk is poorly understood. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted biological-behavioral surveillance among rural residents in Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong districts of Southern China, where we have identified a number of SARS-related coronaviruses in bats. Serum samples were tested for four bat-borne coronaviruses using newly developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Survey data were used to characterize associations between human-animal contact and bat coronavirus spillover risk. A total of 1,596 residents were enrolled in the study from 2015 to 2017. Nine participants (0.6%) tested positive for bat coronaviruses. 265 (17%) participants reported severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and/or influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms in the past year, which were associated with poultry, carnivore, rodent/shrew, or bat contact, with variability by family income and district of residence. This study provides serological evidence of bat coronavirus spillover in rural communities in Southern China. The low seroprevalence observed in this study suggests that bat coronavirus spillover is a rare event. Nonetheless, this study highlights associations between human-animal interaction and zoonotic spillover risk. These findings can be used to support targeted biological behavioral surveillance in high-risk geographic areas in order to reduce the risk of zoonotic disease emergence.

Abstract
Background Allergic diseases are increasing yearly. We aimed to evaluate the difference in allergen sensitization pattern between adults and children in southern China by analyzing a large sample size of real-life data, and to provide the evidence for formulating the prevention and management strategies. Methods Retrospective analysis was conducted on 39,813 serum allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) results collected in southern China from January to December in 2017. Sensitization patterns and how these allergens could lead to the allergic diseases were analyzed for adults and children respectively. The difference of allergen positive rate between groups was calculated using the Chi square test. Results The top five most sensitized allergens in southern China were house dust mite (28.1%), cockroach (24.3%), shrimp (19.2%), crab (15.5%) and egg white (9.9%). While cockroach had the highest positive rate in adults (29.2%), the most sensitized allergen in children was house dust mite (29.7%). The positive rates of egg white and cow’s milk in children were higher than in adults for the whole year (p < 0.001); whereas for adults, the positive rate to cockroach, shrimp and crab were higher than in children (p < 0.001). The positive rate of house dust mite in coastal cities (32.4%) was higher than that in landlocked cities (24.0%) in children, but in adults, the rate in landlocked cities (31.1%) was higher than that in coastal cities (25.3%). Optimal scaling analysis showed that the sIgEs of crab and shrimp had the closest correlation with cockroach-sIgE (Cronbach’s α = 0.891). The positive rate to mold allergens increased from summer to autumn, reaching its plateau in October (6.2%). Patients with skin diseases were found to receive the highest sIgE prescription from doctors (56.9%). Conclusions Doctors tend to prescribe more sIgE tests for patients with skin disorders in southern China. In addition to house dust mite, cockroach was found to be another important allergen. Adults with multiple sensitization always showed co-sensitization with shrimp, crab and house dust mite. These should be taken into consideration when giving allergen avoidance advice to patients. Abstract
A new highly virulent swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS‐CoV) emerged in Guangdong province in 2017 followed by fatal diarrhoea that involved the death of 24,693 piglets. And yet from May 2017 to January 2019, there were no new SADS cases arising in pig herds in Guangdong. In this study, we reported the recent diarrhoea outbreak of SADS‐CoV in Southern China on February 2019. Intestinal samples collected from diarrhoeal piglets were detected for common swine virus and confirmed that SADS‐CoV was responsible for the diarrhoea case. Meanwhile, serological investigation of sows’ sera implied that SADS‐CoV has existed in the farm and PEDV antibody may not directly contribute to the amplification of SADS‐CoV. Homology and phylogenetic analysis of the whole genome showed that the re‐emerging SADS‐CoV strain shared high sequence identities with existing SADS‐CoV strains and all strains clustered together in Alpha coronavirus. All in all, the report herein emphasized the re‐emerging of SADS‐CoV and highlights continuous monitoring for this virus.

Abstract
Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) is an RNA virus newly discovered from swine in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. This novel virus has been confirmed as the cause of congenital tremor (CT) in piglets, which causes extensive economic losses to the swine industry. To investigate the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationship of APPV in China, 83 piglet samples with severe CT clinical signs were obtained from 12 commercial swine farms in 3 provinces of Southern China. RT-PCR revealed that the positive rates of APPV were as high as 100% (12/12) for the swine farms and 90.4% (75/83) for the samples. Subsequently, 21 positive samples and 3 positive samples were selected for partial E2 gene and complete polyprotein gene sequencing, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that 62.5% of the sequences belonged to a novel APPV clade provisionally named genotype 3, which showed 81.0–82.1% sequence identity to genotypes 1 and 2. Amino acid sequence alignment showed that E2 protein of genotype 3 has three specific mutation sites, namely I19V, Y82F, and N107G. The results of the present study demonstrate that a novel APPV subgenotype, which is widely distributed in severe CT clinical samples in Southern China, was genetically diverse. We advocate for the inclusion of genotype 3 during revision of the APPV typing method.

Abstract
Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with many epithelial malignancies. A few reports on the association between EBV and thyroid tumorigenesis have been investigated. However, the conclusion is highly contradictory. We aimed to explore the role of EBV in thyroid nodule development and its clinical significance in a cohort from southern China. Method: We conducted a retrospective data abstraction study of patients who underwent thyroidectomy between December 2017 and June 2018. We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological parameters and EBV infection status (serological antibodies and in situ hybridization). Result: The cohort comprised 384 patients with newly diagnosed thyroid diseases, including 261 papillary thyroid carcinomas, 87 nodular goiters, 21 follicular adenomas, 12 follicular thyroid carcinomas, and 3 medullary thyroid carcinomas. Forty-two (10.9%) patients were identified as being serological antibody positive. However, there was no association between the clinicopathological parameters and serological antibody positivity. Additionally, none of the patients showed EBER expression in thyroid normal/cancer cell nuclei in in situ hybridization. Conclusion: In this study, no correlation between EBV and thyroid diseases was found in a cohort from southern China.
