Application of texture signatures based on multiparameter-magnetic resonance imaging for predicting microvascular invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma: Retrospective study

BACKGROUND

Despite continuous changes in treatment methods, the survival rate for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients remains low, highlighting the importance of diagnostic methods for HCC.

AIM

To explore the efficacy of texture analysis based on multi-parametric magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) in predicting microvascular invasion (MVI) in preoperative HCC.

METHODS

This study included 105 patients with pathologically confirmed HCC, categorized into MVI-positive and MVI-negative groups. We employed Original Data Analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Non-LDA (NDA) for texture analysis using multi-parametric MR images to predict preoperative MVI. The effectiveness of texture analysis was determined using the B11 program of the MaZda4.6 software, with results expressed as the misjudgment rate (MCR).

RESULTS

Texture analysis using multi-parametric MRI, particularly the MI + PA + F dimensionality reduction method combined with NDA discrimination, demonstrated the most effective prediction of MVI in HCC. Prediction accuracy in the pulse and equilibrium phases was 83.81%. MCRs for the combination of T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), arterial phase, portal venous phase, and equilibrium phase were 22.86%, 16.19%, 20.95%, and 20.95%, respectively. The area under the curve for predicting MVI positivity was 0.844, with a sensitivity of 77.19% and specificity of 91.67%.

CONCLUSION

Texture analysis of arterial phase images demonstrated superior predictive efficacy for MVI in HCC compared to T2WI, portal venous, and equilibrium phases. This study provides an objective, non-invasive method for preoperative prediction of MVI, offering a theoretical foundation for the selection of clinical therapy.

Differential diagnosis of cemento-osseous dysplasia and periapical cyst using texture analysis of CBCT

BACKGROUND

Radiolucencies found at the root apex in patients with cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) may be mistaken for periapical cysts (PC) of endodontic origin. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of quantitative texture analysis using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to differentiate between COD and PC.

METHODS

Patients who underwent CBCT at Wonkwang University Daejeon Dental Hospital between January 2019 and December 2022 and were diagnosed with COD and PC by clinical, radiologic, and, if necessary, histopathologic examination were included. Twenty-five patients each were retrospectively enrolled in the COD and PC group. All lesions observed on axial CBCT images were manually segmented using the open-access software MaZda version 4.6 to establish the regions of interest, which were then subjected to texture analysis. Among the 279 texture features obtained, 10 texture features with the highest Fisher coefficients were selected. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U-test, Welch's t-test, or Student's t-test. Texture features that showed significant differences were subjected to receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis to evaluate the differential diagnostic ability of COD and PC.

RESULTS

The COD group consisted of 22 men and 3 women, while the PC group consisted of 14 men and 11 women, showing a significant difference between the two groups in terms of sex (p=0.003). The 10 selected texture features belonged to the gray level co-occurrence matrix and included the sum of average, sum of entropy, entropy, and difference of entropy. All 10 selected texture features showed statistically significant differences (p<0.05) when comparing patients with COD (n=25) versus those with PC (n=25), osteolytic-stage COD (n=11) versus PC (n=25), and osteolytic-stage COD (n=11) versus cementoblastic-stage COD (n=14). ROC curve analysis to determine the ability to differentiate between COD and PC showed a high area under the curve ranging from 0.96 to 0.98.

CONCLUSION

Texture analysis of CBCT images has shown good diagnostic value in the differential diagnosis of COD and PC, which can help prevent unnecessary endodontic treatment, invasive biopsy, or surgical intervention associated with increased risk of infection.

Texture analysis using short-tau inversion recovery magnetic resonance images to differentiate squamous cell carcinoma of the gingiva from medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw

OBJECTIVES

Despite the difficulty in distinguishing between squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) on the basis of medical imaging examinations, the two conditions have completely different treatment methods and prognoses. Therefore, differentiation of SCC from MRONJ on imaging examinations is very important. This study aimed to distinguish SCC from MRONJ by performing texture analysis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) short-tau inversion recovery images.

METHODS

This retrospective case-control study included 14 patients with SCC of the lower gingiva and 35 with MRONJ of the mandible who underwent MRI and computed tomography (CT) for suspected SCC or MRONJ. SCC was identified by histopathological examination of tissues excised during surgery. The radiomics features of SCC and MRONJ were analyzed using the open-access software MaZda version 3.3 (Technical University of Lodz, Institute of Electronics, Poland). CT was used to evaluate the presence or absence of qualitative findings (sclerosis, sequestrum, osteolysis, periosteal reaction, and cellulitis) of SCC and MRONJ.

RESULTS

Among the 19 texture features selected using MaZda feature-reduction methods, SCC of the gingiva and MRONJ of the mandible revealed differences in two histogram features, one absolute gradient feature, and 16 Gy level co-occurrence matrix features. In particular, the percentile, angular second moment, entropy, and difference entropy exhibited excellent diagnostic performance.

CONCLUSION

Non-contrast-enhanced MRI texture analysis revealed differences in texture parameters between mandibular SCC and mandibular MRONJ. MRI texture analysis can be a new noninvasive quantitative method for distinguishing between SCC and MRONJ.

Smooth muscle tumours of the uterus: MR imaging malignant predictive features-a 12-year analysis in a referral hospital in Portugal

PURPOSE

To evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that may help distinguish leiomyosarcomas from atypical leiomyomas (those presenting hyperintensity on T2-W images equal or superior to 50% compared to the myometrium).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors conducted a retrospective single-centre study that included a total of 57 women diagnosed with smooth muscle tumour of the uterus, who were evaluated with pelvic MRI, between January 2009 and March 2020. All cases had a histologically proven diagnosis (31 Atypical Leiomyomas-ALM; 26 Leiomyosarcomas-LMS). The MRI features evaluated in this study included: age at presentation, dimension, contours, intra-tumoral haemorrhagic areas, T2-WI heterogeneity, T2-WI dark areas, flow voids, cyst areas, necrosis, restriction on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, signal intensity and heterogeneity after contrast administration in T1-WI, presence and location of unenhanced areas. The association between the MRI characteristics and the histological subtype was evaluated using Chi-Square and ANOVA tests.

RESULTS

The MRI parameters that showed a statistically significance correlation with malignant histology and thus most strongly associated with LMS were found to be: irregular contours (p < 0.001), intra-tumoral haemorrhagic areas (p = 0.028), T2-WI dark areas (p = 0.016), high signal intensity after contrast administration (p = 0.005), necrosis (p = 0.001), central location for unenhanced areas (p = 0.026), and ADC value lower than 0.88 × 10-3 mm2/s (p = 0.002).

CONCLUSION

With our work, we demonstrate the presence of seven MRI features that are statistically significant in differentiating between LMS and ALM.

Retina images classification based on 2D empirical mode decomposition and multifractal analysis

Diabetic retinopathy is an ocular disease caused by long-term damage to the retina due to high blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar can impair the microvasculature in the retina, leading to vascular abnormalities and the formation of abnormal new blood vessels. These changes can manifest in the retina as hemorrhages, leaks, vessel dilation, retinal edema, and retinal detachment. The retinas of individuals with diabetes exhibit different morphologies compared to those without the condition. Most histological images cannot be accurately described using traditional geometric shapes or methods. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate and classify the morphology of retinas with varying degrees of severity using multifractal geometry. In the initial experiments, two-dimensional empirical mode decomposition was employed to extract high-frequency detailed features, and the classification process was based on the most relevant features in the multifractal spectrum associated with disease factors. To eliminate less significant features, the random forest algorithm was utilized. The proposed method achieved an accuracy of 96%, sensitivity of 96%, and specificity of 95%.

Magnetic resonance imaging-based radiomics analysis of the differential diagnosis of ovarian clear cell carcinoma and endometrioid carcinoma: a retrospective study

PURPOSE

To retrospectively evaluate the diagnostic potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based features and radiomics analysis (RA)-based features for discriminating ovarian clear cell carcinoma (CCC) from endometrioid carcinoma (EC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-five patients with 40 ECs and 42 patients with 43 CCCs who underwent pretherapeutic MRI examinations between 2011 and 2022 were enrolled. MRI-based features of the two groups were compared. RA-based features were extracted from the whole tumor volume on T2-weighted images (T2WI), contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images (cT1WI), and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression with tenfold cross-validation method was performed to select features. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to construct the discriminating models. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were performed to predict CCC.

RESULTS

Four features with the highest absolute value of the LASSO algorithm were selected for the MRI-based, RA-based, and combined models: the ADC value, absence of thickening of the uterine endometrium, absence of peritoneal dissemination, and growth pattern of the solid component for the MRI-based model; Gray-Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM) Long Run Low Gray-Level Emphasis (LRLGLE) on T2WI, spherical disproportion and Gray-Level Size Zone Matrix (GLSZM), Large Zone High Gray-Level Emphasis (LZHGE) on cT1WI, and GLSZM Normalized Gray-Level Nonuniformity (NGLN) on ADC map for the RA-based model; and the ADC value, spherical disproportion and GLSZM_LZHGE on cT1WI, and GLSZM_NGLN on ADC map for the combined model. Area under the ROC curves of those models were 0.895, 0.910, and 0.956. The diagnostic performance of the combined model was significantly superior (p = 0.02) to that of the MRI-based model. No significant differences were observed between the combined and RA-based models.

CONCLUSION

Conventional MRI-based analysis can effectively distinguish CCC from EC. The combination of RA-based features with MRI-based features may assist in differentiating between the two diseases.

Preoperative assessment of grade, T stage, and lymph node involvement: machine learning-based CT texture analysis in colon cancer

PURPOSE

To investigate whether texture analysis of primary colonic mass in preoperative abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans of patients diagnosed with colon cancer could predict tumor grade, T stage, and lymph node involvement using machine learning (ML) algorithms.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This retrospective study included 73 patients diagnosed with colon cancer. Texture features were extracted from contrast-enhanced CT images using LifeX software. First, feature reduction was performed by two radiologists through reproducibility analysis. Using the analysis of variance method, the parameters that best predicted lymph node involvement, grade, and T stage were determined. The predictive performance of these parameters was assessed using Orange software with the k-nearest neighbor (kNN), random forest, gradient boosting, and neural network models, and their area under the curve values were calculated.

RESULTS

There was excellent reproducibility between the two radiologists in terms of 49 of the 58 texture parameters that were subsequently subject to further analysis. Considering all four ML algorithms, the mean AUC and accuracy ranges were 0.557-0.800 and 47-76%, respectively, for the prediction of lymph node involvement; 0.666-0.846 and 68-77%, respectively, for the prediction of grade; and 0.768-0.962 and 81-88%, respectively, for the prediction of T stage. The best performance was achieved with the random forest model in the prediction of LN involvement, the kNN model for the prediction of grade, and the gradient boosting model for the prediction of T stage.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study suggest that the texture analysis of preoperative CT scans obtained for staging purposes in colon cancer can predict the presence of advanced-stage tumors, high tumor grade, and lymph node involvement with moderate specificity and sensitivity rates when evaluated using ML models.

CT and MRI radiomics of bone and soft-tissue sarcomas: an updated systematic review of reproducibility and validation strategies

OBJECTIVE

To systematically review radiomic feature reproducibility and model validation strategies in recent studies dealing with CT and MRI radiomics of bone and soft-tissue sarcomas, thus updating a previous version of this review which included studies published up to 2020.

METHODS

A literature search was conducted on EMBASE and PubMed databases for papers published between January 2021 and March 2023. Data regarding radiomic feature reproducibility and model validation strategies were extracted and analyzed.

RESULTS

Out of 201 identified papers, 55 were included. They dealt with radiomics of bone (n = 23) or soft-tissue (n = 32) tumors. Thirty-two (out of 54 employing manual or semiautomatic segmentation, 59%) studies included a feature reproducibility analysis. Reproducibility was assessed based on intra/interobserver segmentation variability in 30 (55%) and geometrical transformations of the region of interest in 2 (4%) studies. At least one machine learning validation technique was used for model development in 34 (62%) papers, and K-fold cross-validation was employed most frequently. A clinical validation of the model was reported in 38 (69%) papers. It was performed using a separate dataset from the primary institution (internal test) in 22 (40%), an independent dataset from another institution (external test) in 14 (25%) and both in 2 (4%) studies.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared to papers published up to 2020, a clear improvement was noted with almost double publications reporting methodological aspects related to reproducibility and validation. Larger multicenter investigations including external clinical validation and the publication of databases in open-access repositories could further improve methodology and bring radiomics from a research area to the clinical stage.

CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT

An improvement in feature reproducibility and model validation strategies has been shown in this updated systematic review on radiomics of bone and soft-tissue sarcomas, highlighting efforts to enhance methodology and bring radiomics from a research area to the clinical stage.

T2WI-based texture analysis predicts preoperative lymph node metastasis of rectal cancer

BACKGROUND

To prospectively develop and validate the T2WI texture analysis model based on a node-by-node comparison for improving the diagnostic accuracy of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in rectal cancer.

METHODS

A total of 381 histopathologically confirmed lymph nodes (LNs) were collected. LNs texture features were extracted from MRI-T2WI. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were used for feature selection to construct the LN rad-score. Then the clinical risk factors and LN texture features were combined to establish combined predictive model. Model performance was assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). Decision curve analysis (DCA) and nomogram were used to evaluate the clinical application of the model.

RESULTS

A total of 107 texture features were extracted from LN-MRI images. After selection and dimensionality reduction, the radiomics prediction model consisting of 8 texture features showed well-predictive performance in the training and validation cohorts (AUC, 0.676; 95% CI 0.582-0.771) (AUC, 0.774; 95% CI 0.648-0.899). A clinical-radiomics prediction model with the best performance was created by combining clinical and radiomics features, 0.818 (95% CI 0.742-0.893) for the training and 0.922 (95% CI 0.863-0.980) for the validation cohort. The LN Rad-score in clinical-radiomics nomogram obtained the highest classification contribution and was well calibrated. DCA demonstrated the superiority of the clinical-radiomics model.

CONCLUSION

The lymph node T2WI-based texture features can help to improve the preoperative prediction of LNM.

MRI-based Texture Analysis in Differentiation of Benign and Malignant Vertebral Compression Fractures

INTRODUCTION

The diagnosis and characterization of vertebral compression fractures are very important for clinical management. In this evaluation, which is usually performed with diagnostic (conventional) imaging, the findings are not always typical or diagnostic. Therefore, it is important to have new information to support imaging findings. Texture analysis is a method that can evaluate information contained in diagnostic images and is not visually noticeable. This study aimed to evaluate the magnetic resonance images of cases diagnosed with vertebral compression fractures by the texture analysis method, compare them with histopathological data, and investigate the effectiveness of this method in the differentiation of benign and malignant vertebral compression fractures.

METHODS

Fifty-five patients with a total of 56 vertebral compression fractures were included in the study. Magnetic resonance images were examined and segmented using Local Image Feature Extraction (LIFEx) software, which is an open-source program for texture analysis. The results were compared with the histopathological diagnosis.

RESULTS

The application of the Decision Tree algorithm to the dataset yielded impressively accurate predictions (≈95% in accuracy, precision, and recall).

CONCLUSION

Interpreting tissue analysis parameters together with conventional magnetic resonance imaging findings can improve the abilities of radiologists, lead to accurate diagnoses, and prevent unnecessary invasive procedures. Further prospective trials in larger populations are needed to verify the role and performance of texture analysis in patients with vertebral compression fractures.

Correlation of microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties of friction stir welded Joints of AA7075-T6 plates using a flat tool pin profile

This study investigates the influence of square and hexagon tool pin profiles on the butt joint of AA7075-T6 plates through friction stir welding. In contrast to the AA7075-T6 base metal with a grain size of 32.736 μm, both square (4.43 μm) and hexagon (5.79 μm) pin profiles led to a significant reduction in grain size within the stir zone (SZ) of the weld cross-section. The SZ region exhibited a gradient in recrystallization and a notable fraction of high angle grain boundaries, attributed to continuous dynamic recrystallization influenced by variations in temperature and strain rate. Pole figure analysis revealed predominant shear texture elements (B/ B ‾ and C) with minor A1*/A2* and A/ A ‾ , indicating elevated strains within the SZ. Orientation distribution function (ODF) analysis identified recrystallization texture elements such as Goss {110} <001>, cube {001} <101>, and P {011} <112>, along with shear texture components F {111} <112> and rotating cube (H) {001} <110>. Tensile and nanoindentation analyses demonstrated that the weld joint using a square-shaped pin profile exhibited higher strength, elongation, and elastic modulus compared to other weld joints. These findings suggest that the square tool pin geometry enhances material flow and grain refinement during welding, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the joint.

Effects of Interobserver Segmentation Variability and Intensity Discretization on MRI-Based Radiomic Feature Reproducibility of Lipoma and Atypical Lipomatous Tumor

Segmentation and image intensity discretization impact on radiomics workflow. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of interobserver segmentation variability and intensity discretization methods on the reproducibility of MRI-based radiomic features in lipoma and atypical lipomatous tumor (ALT). Thirty patients with lipoma or ALT were retrospectively included. Three readers independently performed manual contour-focused segmentation on T1-weighted and T2-weighted sequences, including the whole tumor volume. Additionally, a marginal erosion was applied to segmentations to evaluate its influence on feature reproducibility. After image pre-processing, with included intensity discretization employing both fixed bin number and width approaches, 1106 radiomic features were extracted from each sequence. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 95% confidence interval lower bound ≥ 0.75 defined feature stability. In contour-focused vs. margin shrinkage segmentation, the rates of stable features extracted from T1-weighted and T2-weighted images ranged from 92.68 to 95.21% vs. 90.69 to 95.66% after fixed bin number discretization and from 95.75 to 97.65% vs. 95.39 to 96.47% after fixed bin width discretization, respectively, with no difference between the two segmentation approaches (p ≥ 0.175). Higher stable feature rates and higher feature ICC values were found when implementing discretization with fixed bin width compared to fixed bin number, regardless of the segmentation approach (p < 0.001). In conclusion, MRI radiomic features of lipoma and ALT are reproducible regardless of the segmentation approach and intensity discretization method, although a certain degree of interobserver variability highlights the need for a preliminary reliability analysis in future studies.

Effectiveness of CT radiomic features combined with clinical factors in predicting prognosis in patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer

BACKGROUND

The prognosis of SCLC is poor and difficult to predict. The aim of this study was to explore whether a model based on radiomics and clinical features could predict the prognosis of patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC).

METHODS

Simulated positioning CT images and clinical features were retrospectively collected from 200 patients with histological diagnosis of LS-SCLC admitted between 2013 and 2021, which were randomly divided into the training (n = 140) and testing (n = 60) groups. Radiomics features were extracted from simulated positioning CT images, and the t-test and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were used to screen radiomics features. We then constructed radiomic score (RadScore) based on the filtered radiomics features. Clinical factors were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox proportional hazards model was used for further analyses of possible prognostic features and clinical factors to build three models including a radiomic model, a clinical model, and a combined model including clinical factors and RadScore. When a model has prognostic predictive value (AUC > 0.7) in both train and test groups, a nomogram will be created. The performance of three models was evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and Kaplan-Meier analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 1037 features were extracted from simulated positioning CT images which were contrast enhanced CT of the chest. The combined model showed the best prediction, with very poor AUC for the radiomic model and the clinical model. The combined model of OS included 4 clinical features and RadScore, with AUCs of 0.71 and 0.70 in the training and test groups. The combined model of PFS included 4 clinical features and RadScore, with AUCs of 0.72 and 0.71 in the training and test groups. T stages, ProGRP and smoke status were the independent variables for OS in the combined model, whereas T stages, ProGRP and prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) were the independent factors for PFS. There was a statistically significant difference between the low- and high-risk groups in the combined model of OS (training group, p < 0.0001; testing group, p = 0.0269) and PFS (training group, p < 0.0001; testing group, p < 0.0001).

CONCLUSION

Combined models involved RadScore and clinical factors can predict prognosis in LS-SCLC and show better performance than individual radiomics and clinical models.

Robustness of [18F]FDG PET/CT radiomic analysis in the setting of drug-induced cardiotoxicity

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Standardization of radiomic data acquisition protocols is still at a very early stage, revealing a strong need to work towards the definition of uniform image processing methodologies The aim of this study is to identify sources of variability in radiomic data derived from image discretization and resampling methodologies prior to image feature extraction. Furthermore, to identify robust potential image-based biomarkers for the early detection of cardiotoxicity.

METHODS

Image post-acquisition processing, interpolation, and volume of interest (VOI) segmentation were performed. Four experiments were conducted to assess the reliability in terms of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of the radiomic features and the effects of the variation of voxel size and gray level discretization. Statistical analysis was performed separating the patients according to cardiotoxicity diagnosis. Differences of texture features were studied with Mann-Whitney U test. P-values <0.05 after multiple testing correction were considered statistically significant. Additionally, a non-supervised k-Means clustering algorithm was evaluated.

RESULTS

The effect of the variation in the voxel size demonstrated a non-dependency relationship with the values of the radiomic features, regardless of the chosen discretization method. The median ICC values were 0.306 and 0.872 for absolute agreement and consistency, respectively, when varying the discretization bin number. The median ICC values were 0.678 and 0.878 for absolute agreement and consistency, respectively, when varying the discretization bin size. A total of 16 first order, 6 Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), 4 Gray Level Dependence Matrix (GLDM) and 4 Gray Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM) features demonstrated statistically significant differences between the diagnosis groups for interim scans (P<0.05) for the fixed bin size (FBS) discretization methodology. However, no statistically significant differences between diagnostic groups were found for the fixed bin number (FBN) discretization methodology. Two clusters based on the radiomic features were identified.

CONCLUSIONS

Gray level discretization has a major impact on the repeatability of the radiomic features. The selection of the optimal processing methodology has led to the identification of texture-based patterns for the differentiation of early cardiac damage profiles.

Radiomics and liver: Where we are and where we are headed?

Hepatic diffuse conditions and focal liver lesions represent two of the most common scenarios to face in everyday radiological clinical practice. Thanks to the advances in technology, radiology has gained a central role in the management of patients with liver disease, especially due to its high sensitivity and specificity. Since the introduction of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiology has been considered the non-invasive reference modality to assess and characterize liver pathologies. In recent years, clinical practice has moved forward to a quantitative approach to better evaluate and manage each patient with a more fitted approach. In this setting, radiomics has gained an important role in helping radiologists and clinicians characterize hepatic pathological entities, in managing patients, and in determining prognosis. Radiomics can extract a large amount of data from radiological images, which can be associated with different liver scenarios. Thanks to its wide applications in ultrasonography (US), CT, and MRI, different studies were focused on specific aspects related to liver diseases. Even if broadly applied, radiomics has some advantages and different pitfalls. This review aims to summarize the most important and robust studies published in the field of liver radiomics, underlying their main limitations and issues, and what they can add to the current and future clinical practice and literature.

Investigating the feasibility of differentiating MS active lesions from inactive ones using texture analysis and machine learning methods in DWI images

BACKGROUND

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used in conjunction with a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) to distinguish active multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions. However, recent studies have raised concerns regarding the long-term effects of the accumulation of GBCA in the body. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of using texture analysis in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and machine learning algorithms to discriminate active from inactive MS lesions without the use of GBCA.

METHODS

To achieve this purpose, we introduce an image processing pipeline. In the proposed pipeline, following registration and alignment of slices, MS lesions from DWI images are segmented and quantized. Next, different texture analysis methods are employed to extract texture features from the lesions. Then, a two-stage feature reduction method is applied, in which the first stage involves a statistical t-test and the second stage relies on principal component analysis (PCA), sequential forward selection (SFS), sequential backward selection (SBS), and ReliefF algorithms. Finally, we use five classifiers logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), K nearest neighbor (KNN), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in a 5-fold cross-validation procedure to determine active and inactive MS lesions.

RESULTS

In this study, we collected and prepared 255 active/inactive MS lesions from MRI scans of 34 patients diagnosed with MS, with a mean age of 35.56±10.89. Among 89 texture features extracted, 63 features showed statistically significant differences between the means of active and inactive lesions (P<0.05). The SVM classifier with the PCA feature reduction algorithm demonstrated the best performance with an average accuracy of 0.960 (±0.024), specificity and precision of 1.0, sensitivity of 0.913 (±0.053), and AUC of 0.957 (±0.027).

CONCLUSION

Our study indicates that DWI changes detected using texture analysis-based machine learning models can precisely differentiate active from inactive MS lesions. This finding provides valuable clinical information for the early diagnosis and effective monitoring of MS disease.

Application of radiomics and machine learning to thyroid diseases in nuclear medicine: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

In the last years growing evidences on the role of radiomics and machine learning (ML) applied to different nuclear medicine imaging modalities for the assessment of thyroid diseases are starting to emerge. The aim of this systematic review was therefore to analyze the diagnostic performances of these technologies in this setting.

METHODS

A wide literature search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science databases was made in order to find relevant published articles about the role of radiomics or ML on nuclear medicine imaging for the evaluation of different thyroid diseases.

RESULTS

Seventeen studies were included in the systematic review. Radiomics and ML were applied for assessment of thyroid incidentalomas at 18 F-FDG PET, evaluation of cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules, assessment of thyroid cancer and classification of thyroid diseases using nuclear medicine techniques.

CONCLUSION

Despite some intrinsic limitations of radiomics and ML may have affect the results of this review, these technologies seem to have a promising role in the assessment of thyroid diseases. Validation of preliminary findings in multicentric studies is needed to translate radiomics and ML approaches in the clinical setting.

Mismatch between clinically defined classification of ALS stage and the burden of cerebral pathology

This study aimed to investigate the clinical stratification of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients in relation to in vivo cerebral degeneration. One hundred forty-nine ALS patients and one hundred forty-four healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from the Canadian ALS Neuroimaging Consortium (CALSNIC). Texture analysis was performed on T1-weighted scans to extract the texture feature "autocorrelation" (autoc), an imaging biomarker of cerebral degeneration. Patients were stratified at baseline into early and advanced disease stages based on criteria adapted from ALS clinical trials and the King's College staging system, as well as into slow and fast progressors (disease progression rates, DPR). Patients had increased autoc in the internal capsule. These changes extended beyond the internal capsule in early-stage patients (clinical trial-based criteria), fast progressors, and in advanced-stage patients (King's staging criteria). Longitudinal increases in autoc were observed in the postcentral gyrus, corticospinal tract, posterior cingulate cortex, and putamen; whereas decreases were observed in corpus callosum, caudate, central opercular cortex, and frontotemporal areas. Both longitudinal increases and decreases of autoc were observed in non-overlapping regions within insula and precentral gyrus. Within-criteria comparisons of autoc revealed more pronounced changes at baseline and longitudinally in early- (clinical trial-based criteria) and advanced-stage (King's staging criteria) patients and fast progressors. In summary, comparative patterns of baseline and longitudinal progression in cerebral degeneration are dependent on sub-group selection criteria, with clinical trial-based stratification insufficiently characterizing disease stage based on pathological cerebral burden.

Imaging Genomics and Multiomics: A Guide for Beginners Starting Radiomics-Based Research

Radiomics uses advanced mathematical analysis of pixel-level information from radiologic images to extract existing information in traditional imaging algorithms. It is intended to find imaging biomarkers related to the genomics of tumors or disease patterns that improve medical care by advanced detection of tumor response patterns in tumors and to assess prognosis. Radiomics expands the paradigm of medical imaging to help with diagnosis, management of diseases and prognostication, leveraging image features by extracting information that can be used as imaging biomarkers to predict prognosis and response to treatment. Radiogenomics is an emerging area in radiomics that investigates the association between imaging characteristics and gene expression profiles. There are an increasing number of research publications using different radiomics approaches without a clear consensus on which method works best. We aim to describe the workflow of radiomics along with a guide of what to expect when starting a radiomics-based research project.

Individualized Texture Similarity Network in Schizophrenia

BACKGROUND

Structural covariance network disruption has been considered an important pathophysiological indicator for schizophrenia. Here, we introduced a novel individualized structural covariance network measure, referred to as a texture similarity network (TSN), and hypothesized that the TSN could reliably reveal unique intersubject heterogeneity and complex dysconnectivity patterns in schizophrenia.

METHODS

The TSN was constructed by measuring the covariance of 180 three-dimensional voxelwise gray-level co-occurrence matrix feature maps between brain areas in each participant. We first tested the validity and reproducibility of the TSN in characterizing the intersubject variability in 2 longitudinal test-retest healthy cohorts. The TSN was further applied to elucidate intersubject variability and dysconnectivity patterns in 10 schizophrenia case-control datasets (609 schizophrenia cases vs. 579 controls) as well as in a first-episode depression dataset (69 patients with depression vs. 69 control participants).

RESULTS

The test-retest analysis demonstrated higher TSN intersubject than intrasubject variability. Moreover, the TSN reliably revealed higher intersubject variability in both chronic and first-episode schizophrenia, but not in depression. The TSN also reproducibly detected coexistent increased and decreased TSN strength in widespread brain areas, increased global small-worldness, and the coexistence of both structural hyposynchronization in the central networks and hypersynchronization in peripheral networks in patients with schizophrenia but not in patients with depression. Finally, aberrant intersubject variability and covariance strength patterns revealed by the TSN showed a missing or weak correlation with other individualized structural covariance network measures, functional connectivity, and regional volume changes.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings support the reliability of a TSN in revealing unique structural heterogeneity and complex dysconnectivity in patients with schizophrenia.

The forgotten method? Pulsed electric field thresholds from the perspective of texture analysis

Pulsed electric field (PEF) technology has found applications in various industrial food sectors, including the potato industry, winemaking, biorefinery, and juice extraction, among others. The practical implementation of PEF technology in the food industry is however still hindered by several challenges. The detection and quantification of PEF effects are complex due to the variable characteristics and properties of raw materials, including cellular composition, structural organization, textural properties, and tissue porosity. Moreover, the PEF treatment parameters (e.g., pulse amplitude, duration, shape, rate), and process parameters (e.g., temperature, pH, medium conductivity) further complicate the optimization of PEF protocols, requiring a case-by-case approach. Knowledge of treated material properties and their functional dependence on PEF is a crucial prerequisite to informed, intelligent design of treatment protocols. We present an experimental study designed to gain insights into the mechanism behind the changes in textural properties induced by PEF in both plant and animal tissues. These changes in texture are then compared with findings from our previous study on electrical impedance, to highlight how different methods of detection of PEF-induced changes in tissue can yield vastly different results based on the method of analysis used depending on tissue properties. Furthermore, texture analysis unveiled the less-explored effects of PEF treatment on electroosmosis phenomena in both plant and animal tissues. We provide a comparative analysis between plant and animal tissues to elucidate the differences in deformation resulting from PEF treatment. We thus demonstrate how important it is, be it in the development phase or for process control during industrial operation, to choose an appropriate method of characterising PEF-induced changes in tissue to avoid under- or overtreatment.

Intravoxel Incoherent Motion Diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging combined with Texture Analysis in Predicting the Histological Grades of Rectal Adenocarcinoma

PURPOSE

To evaluate the predictive value of 3.0T MRI Intravoxel Incoherent motion diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (IVIM-DWI) combined with texture analysis (TA) in the histological grade of rectal adenocarcinoma.

METHODS

Seventy-one patients with rectal adenocarcinoma confirmed by pathology after surgical resection were collected retrospectively. According to pathology, they were divided into a poorly differentiated group (n=23) and a moderately differentiated group (n=48). The IVIM-DWI parameters and TA characteristics of the two groups were compared, and a prediction model was constructed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. ROC curves were plotted for each individual and combined parameter.

RESULTS

There were statistically significant differences in D and D* values between the two groups (P < 0.05). The three texture parameters SmallAreaEmphasis, Median, and Maximum had statistically significant differences between groups (P = 0.01, 0.004, 0.009, respectively). The logistic regression prediction model showed that D*, the median, and the maximum value were significant independent predictors, and the AUC of the regression prediction model was 0.860, which was significantly higher than other single parameters.

CONCLUSION

3.0T MRI IVIM-DWI parameters combined with TA can provide valuable information for predicting the histological grades of rectal adenocarcinoma one week before the operation.

Fractal-Based Analysis of Histological Features of Brain Tumors

The structural complexity of brain tumor tissue represents a major challenge for effective histopathological diagnosis. Tumor vasculature is known to be heterogeneous, and mixtures of patterns are usually present. Therefore, extracting key descriptive features for accurate quantification is not a straightforward task. Several steps are involved in the texture analysis process where tissue heterogeneity contributes to the variability of the results. One of the interesting aspects of the brain lies in its fractal nature. Many regions within the brain tissue yield similar statistical properties at different scales of magnification. Fractal-based analysis of the histological features of brain tumors can reveal the underlying complexity of tissue structure and angiostructure, also providing an indication of tissue abnormality development. It can further be used to quantify the chaotic signature of disease to distinguish between different temporal tumor stages and histopathological grades.Brain meningioma subtype classifications' improvement from histopathological images is the main focus of this chapter. Meningioma tissue texture exhibits a wide range of histological patterns whereby a single slide may show a combination of multiple patterns. Distinctive fractal patterns quantified in a multiresolution manner would be for better spatial relationship representation. Fractal features extracted from textural tissue patterns can be useful in characterizing meningioma tumors in terms of subtype classification, a challenging problem compared to histological grading, and furthermore can provide an objective measure for quantifying subtle features within subtypes that are hard to discriminate.

Predictive value of texture analysis on lumbar MRI in patients with chronic low back pain

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to determine whether MRI texture analysis could predict the prognosis of patients with non-specific chronic low back pain.

METHODS

A prospective observational study was conducted on 100 patients with non-specific chronic low back pain, who underwent a conventional MRI, followed by rehabilitation treatment, and revisited after 6 months. Sociodemographic variables, numeric pain scale (NPS) value, and the degree of disability as measured by the Roland-Morris disability questionnaire (RMDQ), were collected. The MRI analysis included segmentation of regions of interest (vertebral endplates and intervertebral disks from L3-L4 to L5-S1, paravertebral musculature at the L4-L5 space) to extract texture variables (PyRadiomics software). The classification random forest algorithm was applied to identify individuals who would improve less than 30% in the NPS or would score more than 4 in the RMDQ at the end of the follow-up. Sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the ROC curve were calculated.

RESULTS

The final series included 94 patients. The predictive model for classifying patients whose pain did not improve by 30% or more offered a sensitivity of 0.86, specificity 0.57, and area under the ROC curve 0.71. The predictive model for classifying patients with a RMDQ score 4 or more offered a sensitivity of 0.83, specificity of 0.20, and area under the ROC curve of 0.52.

CONCLUSION

The texture analysis of lumbar MRI could help identify patients who are more likely to improve their non-specific chronic low back pain through rehabilitation programs, allowing a personalized therapeutic plan to be established.

The Role of Radiomics in Rectal Cancer

PURPOSE

Radiomics is a promising method for advancing imaging assessment in rectal cancer. This review aims to describe the emerging role of radiomics in the imaging assessment of rectal cancer, including various applications of radiomics based on CT, MRI, or PET/CT.

METHODS

We conducted a literature review to highlight the progress of radiomic research to date and the challenges that need to be addressed before radiomics can be implemented clinically.

RESULTS

The results suggest that radiomics has the potential to provide valuable information for clinical decision-making in rectal cancer. However, there are still challenges in terms of standardization of imaging protocols, feature extraction, and validation of radiomic models. Despite these challenges, radiomics holds great promise for personalized medicine in rectal cancer, with the potential to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning. Further research is needed to validate the clinical utility of radiomics and to establish its role in routine clinical practice.

CONCLUSION

Overall, radiomics has emerged as a powerful tool for improving the imaging assessment of rectal cancer, and its potential benefits should not be underestimated.

Magnetic susceptibility and R2*-based texture analysis for evaluating liver fibrosis in chronic liver disease

PURPOSE

To explore potential feasibility of texture features in magnetic susceptibility and R2* maps for evaluating liver fibrosis.

METHODS

Thirty-one patients (median age 46 years; 22 male) with chronic liver disease were prospectively recruited and underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), blood tests, and liver biopsy. Susceptibility and R2* maps were obtained using a 3-dimensional volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination sequence with a 3T MRI scanner. Texture features, including histogram, gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), gray-level dependence matrix (GLDM), gray-level run length matrix (GLRLM), gray-level size zone matrix (GLSZM), and neighboring gray tone difference matrix (NGTDM) features, were extracted. Texture features and blood test results of non-significant (Ishak-F < 3) and significant fibrosis patients (Ishak-F ≥ 3) were compared, and correlations with Ishak-F stages were analyzed. Areas under the curve (AUCs) were calculated to determine the efficacy for evaluating liver fibrosis.

RESULTS

Nine texture features of susceptibility maps and 19 features of R2* maps were significantly different between non-significant and significant fibrosis groups (all P < 0.05). Large dependence high gray-level emphasis (LDHGLE) of GLDM and long run high gray-level emphasis (LRHGLE) of GLRLM in R2* maps showed significantly negative and good correlations with Ishak-F stages (r = -0.616, P < 0.001; r = -0.637, P < 0.001). Busyness (NGTDM) in susceptibility maps, LDHGLE of GLDM and LRHGLE of GLRLM in R2* maps yield the highest AUCs (AUC = 0.786, P = 0.007; AUC = 0.807, P = 0.004; AUC = 0.819, P = 0.003).

CONCLUSION

Texture characteristics of susceptibility and R2* maps revealed possible staging values for liver fibrosis. Susceptibility and R2*-based texture analysis may be a useful and noninvasive method for staging liver fibrosis.

Differentiation of benign and malignant vertebral fractures using a convolutional neural network to extract CT-based texture features

PURPOSE

To assess the diagnostic performance of three-dimensional (3D) CT-based texture features (TFs) using a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based framework to differentiate benign (osteoporotic) and malignant vertebral fractures (VFs).

METHODS

A total of 409 patients who underwent routine thoracolumbar spine CT at two institutions were included. VFs were categorized as benign or malignant using either biopsy or imaging follow-up of at least three months as standard of reference. Automated detection, labelling, and segmentation of the vertebrae were performed using a CNN-based framework ( https://anduin.bonescreen.de ). Eight TFs were extracted: Varianceglobal, Skewnessglobal, energy, entropy, short-run emphasis (SRE), long-run emphasis (LRE), run-length non-uniformity (RLN), and run percentage (RP). Multivariate regression models adjusted for age and sex were used to compare TFs between benign and malignant VFs.

RESULTS

Skewnessglobal showed a significant difference between the two groups when analyzing fractured vertebrae from T1 to L6 (benign fracture group: 0.70 [0.64-0.76]; malignant fracture group: 0.59 [0.56-0.63]; and p = 0.017), suggesting a higher skewness in benign VFs compared to malignant VFs.

CONCLUSION

Three-dimensional CT-based global TF skewness assessed using a CNN-based framework showed significant difference between benign and malignant thoracolumbar VFs and may therefore contribute to the clinical diagnostic work-up of patients with VFs.

Investigating the dietary niches of fossil Plio-Pleistocene European macaques: The case of Macaca majori Azzaroli, 1946 from Sardinia

The genus Macaca includes medium- to large-bodied monkeys and represents one of the most diverse primate genera, also having a very large geographic range. Nowadays, wild macaque populations are found in Asia and Africa, inhabiting a wide array of habitats. Fossil macaques were also present in Europe from the Late Miocene until the Late Pleistocene. Macaques are considered ecologically flexible monkeys that exhibit highly opportunistic dietary strategies, which may have been critical to their evolutionary success. Nevertheless, available ecological information regarding fossil European species is very sparse, limiting our knowledge of their evolutionary history in this geographic area. To further our understanding of fossil European macaque ecology, we investigated the dietary ecology of Macaca majori, an insular endemic species from Sardinia. In particular, we characterized the dental capabilities and potential dietary adaptations of M. majori through dental topographic and enamel thickness analyses of two M2s from the Early Pleistocene site of Capo Figari (1.8 Ma). We also assessed its diet through dental microwear texture analysis, while the microwear texture of M. majori was also compared with microwear textures from other European fossil macaques from mainland Europe. The dental topographic and enamel thickness analyses suggest that M. majori frequently consumes hard/mechanically challenging and/or abrasive foods. The results of the dental microwear analysis are consistent with this interpretation and further suggest that M. majori probably exhibited more durophagous dietary habits than mainland Plio-Pleistocene macaques. Overall, our results indicate that M. majori probably occupied a different dietary niche compared to its mainland fossil relatives, which suggests that they may have inhabited different paleoenvironments.

Utility of texture analysis for objective quantitative ex vivo assessment of meningioma consistency: method proposal and validation

BACKGROUND

Tumor consistency is considered to be a critical factor for the surgical removal of meningiomas and its preoperative assessment is intensively studied. A significant drawback in the research of predictive methods is the lack of a clear shared definition of tumor consistency, with most authors resorting to subjective binary classification labeling the samples as "soft" and "hard." This classification is highly observer-dependent and its discrete nature fails to capture the fine nuances in tumor consistency. To compensate for these shortcomings, we examined the utility of texture analysis to provide an objective observer-independent continuous measure of meningioma consistency.

METHODS

A total of 169 texturometric measurements were conducted using the Brookfield CT3 Texture Analyzer on meningioma samples from five patients immediately after the removal and on the first, second, and seventh postoperative day. The relationship between measured stiffness and time from sample extraction, subjectively assessed consistency grade and histopathological features (amount of collagen and reticulin fibers, presence of psammoma bodies, predominant microscopic morphology) was analyzed.

RESULTS

The stiffness measurements exhibited significantly lower variance within a sample than among samples (p = 0.0225) and significant increase with a higher objectively assessed consistency grade (p = 0.0161, p = 0.0055). A significant negative correlation was found between the measured stiffness and the time from sample extraction (p < 0.01). A significant monotonic relationship was revealed between stiffness values and amount of collagen I and reticulin fibers; there were no statistically significant differences between histological phenotypes in regard to presence of psammoma bodies and predominant microscopic morphology.

CONCLUSIONS

We conclude that the values yielded by texture analysis are highly representative of an intrinsic consistency-related quality of the sample despite the influence of intra-sample heterogeneity and that our proposed method can be used to conduct quantitative studies on the role of meningioma consistency.

Radiographic texture analysis of the hard tissue changes following socket preservation with allograft and xenograft materials for dental implantation: a randomized clinical trial

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to assess the hard tissue changes following socket preservation with allograft and xenograft materials for dental implantation by texture analysis (TA) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This prospective clinical trial was conducted on 25 patients who required the extraction of carious mandibular posterior teeth and their subsequent replacement with dental implants. The patients were categorized into three groups: (I) no socket preservation, (II) socket preservation with xenograft material, and (III) socket preservation with allograft material. Four months after tooth extraction, the patients were recalled for preoperative assessment before dental implantation, and CBCT scans were obtained (Kvp:110, mA:1.94, S:3.6). MaZda software was used to compare homogeneity, contrast, and texture complexity on axial CBCT sections among the three groups.

RESULTS

Significant differences existed among the three groups in all parameters (P < 0.05) except for the mean correlation parameter (P > 0.05). The results showed no significant difference between the no graft and xenograft groups regarding contrast and differential (dif.) entropy (P > 0.05). Also, no significant difference was found between the xenograft and allograft groups regarding the dif. variance and also between the no graft and allograft groups regarding the inverse difference moment(InvDfMom) and dif. variance parameters (P > 0.05). All other pairwise comparisons revealed significant differences (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

TA can be used for the quantification of radiographic changes of bone following socket preservation and potentially accelerate the process of decision-making for dental implant treatment.

CT radiomics analysis of primary colon cancer patients with or without liver metastases: a correlative study with [18F]FDG PET uptake values

PURPOSE

Utilizing [18F]Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography ([18F]FDG PET/CT) scans on primary colon cancer (CC) patients including with liver metastases (LM), we aimed to determine the relationship between structural CT radiomic features and metabolic PET standard uptake value (SUV) in these patients.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

A retrospective analysis was performed on 60 patients with primary CC, of which 40 had liver metastases that were more than 2 cm in diameter. [18F]FDG PET/CT was used to calculate SUVmax, and 42 CT radiomic characteristics were extracted from non-enhanced CT images. Tumors were manually segmented on fused PET/CT scans by two experienced nuclear medicine physicians. Sixty primary CC and forty LM lesions were segmented accordingly. In the cases of multiple LM lesions, the lesion with the largest diameter was chosen for segmentation. In a univariate analysis approach, we used Spearman correlation with multiple testing correction (Benjamini-Hutchberg false discovery rate (FDR), α = 0.05) to ascertain the relationship between SUVmax and CT radiomic features.

RESULT

Twenty-two (52.3%) and twenty-six (61.9%) CT radiomic features were found to be significantly correlated with SUVmax values of primary CC (n = 60) and LM (n = 40) lesions, respectively (FDR-corrected p value < 0.05 and 0.6 < |ρ| < 1). GLCM_homogeneity (ρ = 0.839), GLCM_dissimilarity (ρ = - 0.832), GLZLM_ZLNU (ρ = 0.827), and GLCM_contrast (ρ = - 0.815) were the 4 features most correlated with SUVmax in CC. On the other hand, in LM, the 4 features most correlated with SUVmax were GLRLM_LRHGE (ρ = 0.859), GLRLM_LRE (ρ = 0.859), GLRLM_LRLGE (ρ = 0.857), and GLRLM_RP (ρ = - 0.820).

CONCLUSION

We investigated the relationship between SUVmax of preoperative primary CC lesions and their LM with CT radiomic features. We found some CT radiomic features having relationships with the metabolic characteristics of lesions. This work suggests that non-invasive predictive imaging biomarkers for precision medicine can be derived from CT radiomic.

Assessing bone mineral density in non-weight bearing regions of the body: a texture analysis approach using abdomen and pelvis computed tomography Hounsfield units-a cross-sectional study

Background

Highlighting a gap in comprehending bone microarchitecture's intricacies using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), this study aims to bridge this chasm by analyzing texture in non-weight bearing regions on axial computed tomography (CT) scans. Our goal is to enrich osteoporosis patient management by enhancing bone quality and microarchitecture insights.

Methods

Conducted at Busan Medical Center from March 1, 2013, to August 30, 2022, 1,320 cases (782 patients) were screened. After applying exclusion criteria, 458 samples (296 patients) underwent bone mineral density (BMD) assessment with both CT and DXA. Regions of interest (ROIs) included spine pedicle's maximum trabecular area, sacrum Zone 1, superior/inferior pubic ramus, and femur's greater/lesser trochanters. Texture features (n=45) were extracted from ROIs using gray-level co-occurrence matrices. A regression model predicted BMD, spotlighting the top five influential texture features.

Results

Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.709 (lowest for total femur BMD) to 0.804 (highest for femur intertrochanter BMD). Mean squared error (MSE) values were also provided for lumbar and femur BMD/bone mineral content (BMC) metrics. The most influential texture features included contrast_32, correlation_32_v, and three other metrics.

Conclusions

By melding traditional DXA and CT texture analysis, our approach presents a comprehensive bone health perspective, potentially revolutionizing osteoporosis diagnostics.

Enhanced CT combined with texture analysis for differential diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma and adenolymphoma

OBJECTIVE

This study sought to evaluate the worth of the general characteristics of enhanced CT images and the histogram parameters of each stage in distinguishing pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and adenolymphoma (AL).

METHODS

The imaging features and histogram parameters of preoperative enhanced CT images in 20 patients with PA and 29 patients with AL were analyzed. Tumor morphology and histogram parameters of PA and AL were compared. Area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and subject operational feature specificity (ROC) analysis were used to determine the differential diagnostic effect of single-stage or multi-stage parameter combinations.

RESULTS

The difference in CT value and net enhancement value of arterial phase (AP) were significant (p < 0.05); Flat sweep phase (FSP), AP mean, percentiles, 10th, 50th, 90th, 99th and arterial period variance and venous phase (VP) kurtosis in the nine histogram parameters of each period (p < 0.05). An analysis of the ROC curve revealed a maximum area beneath the curve (AUC) in the 90th percentile of FSP for a single-parameter differential diagnosis to be 0.870. The diagnostic efficacy of the mean value of FSP + The 90th percentile of AP + Kurtosis of VP was the best in multi-parameter combination diagnosis, with an AUC of 0.925, and the sensitivity and specificity of 0.900 and 0.850, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The histogram analysis of enhanced CT images is valuable for the differentiation of PA and AL. Moreover, the combination of single-stage parameters or multi-stage parameters can improve the differential diagnosis efficiency.

A novel higher order appearance texture analysis to diagnose lung cancer based on a modified local ternary pattern

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Lung cancer is an important cause of death and morbidity around the world. Two of the primary computed tomography (CT) imaging markers that can be used to differentiate malignant and benign lung nodules are the inhomogeneity of the nodules' texture and nodular morphology. The objective of this paper is to present a new model that can capture the inhomogeneity of the detected lung nodules as well as their morphology.

METHODS

We modified the local ternary pattern to use three different levels (instead of two) and a new pattern identification algorithm to capture the nodule's inhomogeneity and morphology in a more accurate and flexible way. This modification aims to address the wide Hounsfield unit value range of the detected nodules which decreases the ability of the traditional local binary/ternary pattern to accurately classify nodules' inhomogeneity. The cut-off values defining these three levels of the novel technique are estimated empirically from the training data. Subsequently, the extracted imaging markers are fed to a hyper-tuned stacked generalization-based classification architecture to classify the nodules as malignant or benign. The proposed system was evaluated on in vivo datasets of 679 CT scans (364 malignant nodules and 315 benign nodules) from the benchmark Lung Image Database Consortium and Image Database Resource Initiative (LIDC-IDRI) and an external dataset of 100 CT scans (50 malignant and 50 benign). The performance of the classifier was quantitatively assessed using a Leave-one-out cross-validation approach and externally validated using the unseen external dataset based on sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.

RESULTS

The overall accuracy of the system is 96.17% with 97.14% sensitivity and 95.33% specificity. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve was 0.98, which highlights the robustness of the system. Using the unseen external dataset for validating the system led to consistent results showing the generalization abilities of the proposed approach. Moreover, applying the original local binary/ternary pattern or using other classification structures achieved inferior performance when compared against the proposed approach.

CONCLUSIONS

These experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model as a novel tool to assist physicians and radiologists for lung nodules' early assessment based on the new comprehensive imaging markers.

Assessment and risk prediction of frailty using texture-based muscle ultrasound image analysis and machine learning techniques

The purpose of this study was to evaluate texture-based muscle ultrasound image analysis for the assessment and risk prediction of frailty phenotype. This retrospective study of prospectively acquired data included 101 participants who underwent ultrasound scanning of the anterior thigh. Participants were subdivided according to frailty phenotype and were followed up for two years. Primary and secondary outcome measures were death and comorbidity, respectively. Forty-three texture features were computed from the rectus femoris and the vastus intermedius muscles using statistical methods. Model performance was evaluated by computing the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) while outcome prediction was evaluated using regression analysis. Models developed achieved a moderate to good AUC (0.67 ≤ AUC ≤ 0.79) for categorizing frailty. The stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that they correctly classified 70-87% of the cases. The models were associated with increased comorbidity (0.01 ≤ p ≤ 0.18) and were predictive of death for pre-frail and frail participants (0.001 ≤ p ≤ 0.016). In conclusion, texture analysis can be useful to identify frailty and assess risk prediction (i.e. mortality) using texture features extracted from muscle ultrasound images in combination with a machine learning approach.

Noninvasive assessment of significant liver fibrosis in rabbits by spectral CT parameters and texture analysis

PURPOSE

Noninvasive assessment of significant liver fibrosis in rabbits by spectral CT parameters and texture analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-three rabbits were randomly divided into 27 carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis group and 6 control group. Spectral CT contrast-enhanced scan was performed in batches, and the liver fibrosis was staged according to the histopathological results. The portal venous phase spectral CT parameters [70 keV CT value, normalized iodine concentration (NIC), spectral HU curve slope (λHU)] were measured, and MaZda texture analysis was performed on 70 keV monochrome images. Three dimensionality reduction methods and four statistical methods in B11 module were used to perform discriminant analysis and calculate misclassified rate (MCR), and ten texture features under the lowest combination of MCR were statistically analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to calculate the diagnostic performance of spectral parameters and texture features for significant liver fibrosis. Finally, the binary logistic regression was used to further screen independent predictors and establish model.

RESULTS

A total of 23 experimental rabbits and 6 control rabbits were included, of which 16 had significant liver fibrosis. Three spectral CT parameters with significant liver fibrosis were significantly lower than those of non-significant liver fibrosis (p < 0.05), and the AUC ranged from 0.846 to 0.913. The combination analysis of mutual information (MI) and nonlinear discriminant analysis (NDA) had the lowest MCR, which with 0%. In the filtered texture features, four were statistically significant and AUC > 0.5, ranges from 0.764 to 0.875. The logistic regression model showed that Perc.90% and NIC could be used as independent predictors, the overall prediction accuracy of the model was 89.7% and the AUC was 0.976.

CONCLUSION

Spectral CT parameters and texture features have high diagnostic value for predicting significant liver fibrosis in rabbits, and the combination of the two can improve its diagnostic efficiency.

Diagnostic value of machine learning-based computed tomography texture analysis for differentiating multiple myeloma from osteolytic metastatic bone lesions in the peripheral skeleton

OBJECTIVES

To report the diagnostic performance of machine learning-based CT texture analysis for differentiating multiple myeloma from osteolytic metastatic bone lesions in the peripheral skeleton.

METHODS

We retrospectively evaluated 172 patients with multiple myeloma (n = 70) and osteolytic metastatic bone lesions (n = 102) in the peripheral skeleton. Two radiologists individually used two-dimensional manual segmentation to extract texture features from non-contrast CT. In total, 762 radiomic features were extracted. Dimension reduction was performed in three stages: inter-observer agreement analysis, collinearity analysis, and feature selection. Data were randomly divided into training (n = 120) and test (n = 52) groups. Eight machine learning algorithms were used for model development. The primary performance metrics were the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and accuracy.

RESULTS

In total, 476 of the 762 texture features demonstrated excellent interobserver agreement. The number of features was reduced to 22 after excluding those with strong collinearity. Of these features, six were included in the machine learning algorithms using the wrapper-based classifier-specific technique. When all eight machine learning algorithms were considered for differentiating multiple myeloma from osteolytic metastatic bone lesions in the peripheral skeleton, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and accuracy were 0.776-0.932 and 78.8-92.3%, respectively. The k-nearest neighbors model performed the best, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and accuracy values of 0.902 and 92.3%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Machine learning-based CT texture analysis is a promising method for discriminating multiple myeloma from osteolytic metastatic bone lesions.

Evaluation of calcification distribution by CT-based textural analysis for discrimination of immature teratoma

BACKGROUND

Mature and immature teratomas are differentiated based on tumor markers and calcification or fat distribution. However, no study has objectively quantified the differences in calcification and fat distributions between these tumors. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic potential of CT-based textural analysis in differentiating between mature and immature teratomas in patients aged < 20 years.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-two patients with pathologically proven mature cystic (n = 28) and immature teratomas (n = 4) underwent transabdominal ultrasound and/or abdominal and pelvic CT before surgery. The diagnostic performance of CT for assessing imaging features, including subjective manual measurement and objective textural analysis of fat and calcification distributions in the tumors, was evaluated by two experienced readers. The histopathological results were used as the gold standard. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

We evaluated 32 patients (mean age, 14.5 years; age range, 6-19 years). The mean maximum diameter and number of calcifications of immature teratomas were significantly larger than those of mature cystic teratomas (p < 0.01). The mean number of fats of immature teratomas was significantly larger than that of mature cystic teratomas (p < 0.01); however, no significant difference in the maximum diameter of fats was observed. CT textural features for calcification distribution in the tumors showed that mature cystic teratomas had higher homogeneity and energy than immature teratomas. However, immature teratomas showed higher correlation, entropy, and dissimilarity than mature cystic teratomas among features derived from the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in the CT features of fats derived from GLCM.

CONCLUSION

Our results demonstrate that calcification distribution on CT is a potential diagnostic biomarker to discriminate mature from immature teratomas, thus enabling optimal therapeutic selection for patients aged < 20 years.

Differentiation of neurogenic tumours and pleomorphic adenomas in the parapharyngeal space based on texture analysis of T2WI

BACKGROUND

The purpose of this study was to identify neurogenic tumours and pleomorphic adenomas of the parapharyngeal space based on the texture characteristics of MRI-T2WI.

METHODS

MR findings and pathological reports of 25 patients with benign tumours in the parapharyngeal space were reviewed retrospectively (13 cases with pleomorphic adenomas and 12 cases with neurogenic tumours). Using PyRadiomics, the texture of the region of interest in T2WI sketched by radiologists was analysed. By using independent sample t-tests and Mann‒Whitney U tests, the selected texture features of 36 Gray Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Gray Level Dependence Matrix (GLDM) were tested. A set of parameters of texture features showed statistically significant differences between the two groups, which were selected, and the diagnostic efficiency was evaluated via the operating characteristic curve of the subjects.

RESULTS

The differences in the three parameters - small dependence low level emphasis (SDLGLE), low level emphasis (LGLE) and difference variance (DV) of characteristics - between the two groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). No significant difference was found in the other indices. ROC curves were drawn for the three parameters, with AUCs of 0.833, 0.795, and 0.744, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a difference in the texture characteristic parameters based on magnetic resonance T2WI images between neurogenic tumours and pleomorphic adenomas in the parapharyngeal space. For the differential diagnosis of these two kinds of tumours, texture analysis of significant importance is an objective and quantitative analytical tool.

Predictive role of radiomics features extracted from preoperative cross-sectional imaging of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma in detecting lymph node metastasis: a systemic review and meta-analysis

Lymph node metastases are associated with poor clinical outcomes in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). In preoperative imaging, conventional diagnostic modalities do not provide the desired accuracy in diagnosing lymph node metastasis. The current review aims to determine the pooled diagnostic profile of studies examining the role of radiomics features in detecting lymph node metastasis in PDAC. PubMed, Google Scholar, and Embase databases were searched for relevant articles. The quality of the studies was examined using the Radiomics Quality Score and Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 (QUADAS-2) tools. Pooled results for sensitivity, specificity, likelihood, and odds ratios with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effect model (DerSimonian-Liard method). No significant publication bias was detected among the studies included in this meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity of the validation datasets included in the study was 77.4% (72.7%, 81.5%) and pooled specificity was 72.4% (63.8, 79.6%). The diagnostic odds ratio of the validation datasets was 9.6 (6.0, 15.2). No statistically significant heterogeneity was detected for sensitivity and odds ratio (P values of 0.3 and 0.08, respectively). However, there was significant heterogeneity concerning specificity (P = 0.003). The pretest probability of having lymph node metastasis in the pooled databases was 52% and a positive post-test probability was 76% after the radiomics features were used, showing a net benefit of 24%. Classifiers trained on radiomics features extracted from preoperative images can improve the sensitivity and specificity of conventional cross-sectional imaging in detecting lymph node metastasis in PDAC.

Periaortic adipose radiomics texture features associated with increased coronary calcium score-first results on a photon-counting-CT

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular diseases remain the world's primary cause of death. The identification and treatment of patients at risk of cardiovascular events thus are as important as ever. Adipose tissue is a classic risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, has been linked to systemic inflammation, and is suspected to contribute to vascular calcification. To further investigate this issue, the use of texture analysis of adipose tissue using radiomics features could prove a feasible option.

METHODS

In this retrospective single-center study, 55 patients (mean age 56, 34 male, 21 female) were scanned on a first-generation photon-counting CT. On axial unenhanced images, periaortic adipose tissue surrounding the thoracic descending aorta was segmented manually. For feature extraction, patients were divided into three groups, depending on coronary artery calcification (Agatston Score 0, Agatston Score 1-99, Agatston Score ≥ 100). 106 features were extracted using pyradiomics. R statistics was used for statistical analysis, calculating mean and standard deviation with Pearson correlation coefficient for feature correlation. Random Forest classification was carried out for feature selection and Boxplots and heatmaps were used for visualization. Additionally, monovariable logistic regression predicting an Agatston Score > 0 was performed, selected features were tested for multicollinearity and a 10-fold cross-validation investigated the stability of the leading feature.

RESULTS

Two higher-order radiomics features, namely "glcm_ClusterProminence" and "glcm_ClusterTendency" were found to differ between patients without coronary artery calcification and those with coronary artery calcification (Agatston Score ≥ 100) through Random Forest classification. As the leading differentiating feature "glcm_ClusterProminence" was identified.

CONCLUSION

Changes in periaortic adipose tissue texture seem to correlate with coronary artery calcium score, supporting a possible influence of inflammatory or fibrotic activity in perivascular adipose tissue. Radiomics features may potentially aid as corresponding biomarkers in the future.

MRI-based breast cancer radiogenomics using RNA profiling: association with subtypes in a single-center prospective study

BACKGROUND

There are few prospective studies on the correlations between MRI features and whole RNA-sequencing data in breast cancer according to molecular subtypes. The purpose of our study was to explore the association between genetic profiles and MRI phenotypes of breast cancer and to identify imaging markers that influences the prognosis and treatment according to subtypes.

METHODS

From June 2017 to August 2018, MRIs of 95 women with invasive breast cancer were prospectively analyzed, using the breast imaging-reporting and data system and texture analysis. Whole RNA obtained from surgical specimens was analyzed using next-generation sequencing. The association between MRI features and gene expression profiles was analyzed in the entire tumor and subtypes. Gene networks, enriched functions, and canonical pathways were analyzed using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. The P value for differential expression was obtained using a parametric F test comparing nested linear models and adjusted for multiple testing by reporting Q value.

RESULTS

In 95 participants (mean age, 53 years ± 11 [standard deviation]), mass lesion type was associated with upregulation of CCL3L1 (sevenfold) and irregular mass shape was associated with downregulation of MIR421 (sixfold). In estrogen receptor-positive cancer with mass lesion type, CCL3L1 (21-fold), SNHG12 (11-fold), and MIR206 (sevenfold) were upregulated, and MIR597 (265-fold), MIR126 (12-fold), and SOX17 (fivefold) were downregulated. In triple-negative breast cancer with increased standard deviation of texture analysis on precontrast T1-weighted imaging, CLEC3A (23-fold), SRGN (13-fold), HSPG2 (sevenfold), KMT2D (fivefold), and VMP1 (fivefold) were upregulated, and IGLC2 (73-fold) and PRDX4 (sevenfold) were downregulated (all, P < 0.05 and Q < 0.1). Gene network and functional analysis showed that mass type estrogen receptor-positive cancers were associated with cell growth, anti-estrogen resistance, and poor survival.

CONCLUSION

MRI characteristics are associated with the different expressions of genes related to metastasis, anti-drug resistance, and prognosis, depending on the molecular subtypes of breast cancer.

Magnetic resonance imaging in naso-oropharyngeal carcinoma: role of texture analysis in the assessment of response to radiochemotherapy, a preliminary study

OBJECTIVE

Identifying MRI texture parameters able to distinguish inflammation, fibrosis, and residual cancer in patients with naso-oropharynx carcinoma after radiochemotherapy (RT-CHT).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In this single-centre, observational, retrospective study, texture analysis was performed on ADC maps and post-gadolinium T1 images of patients with histological diagnosis of naso-oropharyngeal carcinoma treated with RT-CHT. An initial cohort of 99 patients was selected; 57 of them were later excluded. The final cohort of 42 patients was divided into 3 groups (inflammation, fibrosis, and residual cancer) according to MRI, 18F-FDG-PET/CT performed 3-4 months after RT-CHT, and biopsy. Pre-RT-CHT lesions and the corresponding anatomic area post-RT-CHT were segmented with 3D slicer software from which 107 textural features were derived. T-Student and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were performed, and features with p-value < 0.01 were considered statistically significant. Cut-off values-obtained by ROC curves-to discriminate post-RT-CHT non-tumoural changes from residual cancer were calculated for the parameters statistically associated to the diseased status at follow-up.

RESULTS

Two features-Energy and Grey Level Non-Uniformity-were statistically significant on T1 images in the comparison between 'positive' (residual cancer) and 'negative' patients (inflammation and fibrosis). Energy was also found to be statistically significant in both patients with fibrosis and residual cancer. Grey Level Non-Uniformity was significant in the differentiation between residual cancer and inflammation. Five features were statistically significant on ADC maps in the differentiation between 'positive' and 'negative' patients. The reduction in values of such features between pre- and post-RT-CHT was correlated with a good response to therapy.

CONCLUSIONS

Texture analysis on post-gadolinium T1 images and ADC maps can differentiate residual cancer from fibrosis and inflammation in early follow-up of naso-oropharyngeal carcinoma treated with RT-CHT.

Mapping Tumor Heterogeneity via Local Entropy Assessment: Making Biomarkers Visible

Advanced imaging and analysis improve prediction of pathology data and outcomes in several tumors, with entropy-based measures being among the most promising biomarkers. However, entropy is often perceived as statistical data lacking clinical significance. We aimed to generate a voxel-by-voxel visual map of local tumor entropy, thus allowing to (1) make entropy explainable and accessible to clinicians; (2) disclose and quantitively characterize any intra-tumoral entropy heterogeneity; (3) evaluate associations between entropy and pathology data. We analyzed the portal phase of preoperative CT of 20 patients undergoing liver surgery for colorectal metastases. A three-dimensional core kernel (5 × 5 × 5 voxels) was created and used to compute the local entropy value for each voxel of the tumor. The map was encoded with a color palette. We performed two analyses: (a) qualitative assessment of tumors' detectability and pattern of entropy distribution; (b) quantitative analysis of the entropy values distribution. The latter data were compared with standard Hounsfield data as predictors of post-chemotherapy tumor regression grade (TRG). Entropy maps were successfully built for all tumors. Metastases were qualitatively hyper-entropic compared to surrounding parenchyma. In four cases hyper-entropic areas exceeded the tumor margin visible at CT. We identified four "entropic" patterns: homogeneous, inhomogeneous, peripheral rim, and mixed. At quantitative analysis, entropy-derived data (percentiles/mean/median/root mean square) predicted TRG (p < 0.05) better than Hounsfield-derived ones (p = n.s.). We present a standardized imaging technique to visualize tumor heterogeneity built on a voxel-by-voxel entropy assessment. The association of local entropy with pathology data supports its role as a biomarker.

Identification of triple-negative breast cancer and androgen receptor expression based on histogram and texture analysis of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI

BACKGROUND

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is highly malignant and has a poor prognosis due to the lack of effective therapeutic targets. Androgen receptor (AR) has been investigated as a possible therapeutic target. This study quantitatively assessed intratumor heterogeneity by histogram analysis of pharmacokinetic parameters and texture analysis on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to discriminate TNBC from non-triple-negative breast cancer (non-TNBC) and to identify AR expression in TNBC.

METHODS

This retrospective study included 99 patients with histopathologically proven breast cancer (TNBC: 36, non-TNBC: 63) who underwent breast DCE-MRI before surgery. The pharmacokinetic parameters of DCE-MRI (K^trans, K_ep and V_e) and their corresponding texture parameters were calculated. The independent t-test, or Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare quantitative parameters between TNBC and non-TNBC groups, and AR-positive (AR+) and AR-negative (AR-) TNBC groups. The parameters with significant difference between two groups were further involved in logistic regression analysis to build a prediction model for TNBC. The ROC analysis was conducted on each independent parameter and the TNBC predicting model for evaluating the discrimination performance. The area under the ROC curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity were derived.

RESULTS

The binary logistic regression analysis revealed that K_{ep_Range} (p = 0.032) and V_{e_SumVariance} (p = 0.005) were significantly higher in TNBC than in non-TNBC. The AUC of the combined model for identifying TNBC was 0.735 (p < 0.001) with a cut-off value of 0.268, and its sensitivity and specificity were 88.89% and 52.38%, respectively. The value of K_{ep_Compactness2} (p = 0.049), K_{ep_SphericalDisproportion} (p = 0.049), and V_{e_GlcmEntropy} (p = 0.008) were higher in AR + TNBC group than in AR-TNBC group.

CONCLUSION

Histogram and texture analysis of breast lesions on DCE-MRI showed potential to identify TNBC, and the specific features can be possible predictors of AR expression, enhancing the ability to individualize the treatment of patients with TNBC.

Thermal gelation and digestion properties of hen egg white: Study on the effect of neutral and alkaline salts addition

In this study, the thermal gelation and digestion properties of hen egg white (hen EW) proteins with different salts were investigated. Results show that the addition of neutral salt - sodium chloride (NaCl) decreased the gel hardness/resilience, increased gel lightness, aggregated particle size and digestibility of hen EW proteins significantly. In contrast, alkaline salts - phosphate and carbonate addition increased the gel resilience and strain tolerance as well as reduced the aggregated particle size and gel lightness of hen EW proteins due to the increase of solution pH and negative charge. Correlation analysis shows that the digestibility of hen EW gels was affected by gel viscoelasticity, molecule forces and texture. In conclusion, thermal gelation properties of hen EW proteins could be modulated by salts with different pH/ionic strength, and thus affected the protein digestion and peptide released.

Diagnostic performance of texture analysis in the differential diagnosis of perianal fistulising Crohn’s disease and glandular anal fistula

BACKGROUND

Perianal fistulising Crohn's disease (PFCD) and glandular anal fistula have many similarities on conventional magnetic resonance imaging. However, many patients with PFCD show concomitant active proctitis, but only few patients with glandular anal fistula have active proctitis.

AIM

To explore the value of differential diagnosis of PFCD and glandular anal fistula by comparing the textural feature parameters of the rectum and anal canal in fat suppression T2-weighted imaging (FS-T2WI).

METHODS

Patients with rectal water sac implantation were screened from the first part of this study (48 patients with PFCD and 22 patients with glandular anal fistula). Open-source software ITK-SNAP (Version 3.6.0, http://www.itksnap.org/) was used to delineate the region of interest (ROI) of the entire rectum and anal canal wall on every axial section, and then the ROIs were input in the Analysis Kit software (version V3.0.0.R, GE Healthcare) to calculate the textural feature parameters. Textural feature parameter differences of the rectum and anal canal wall between the PFCD group vs the glandular anal fistula group were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test. The redundant textural parameters were screened by bivariate Spearman correlation analysis, and binary logistic regression analysis was used to establish the model of textural feature parameters. Finally, diagnostic accuracy was assessed by receiver operating characteristic-area under the curve (AUC) analysis.

RESULTS

In all, 385 textural parameters were obtained, including 37 parameters with statistically significant differences between the PFCD and glandular anal fistula groups. Then, 16 texture feature parameters remained after bivariate Spearman correlation analysis, including one histogram parameter (Histogram energy); four grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) parameters (GLCM energy_all direction_offset1_SD, GLCM entropy_all direction_ offset4_SD, GLCM entropy_all direction_offset7_SD, and Haralick correlation_all direction_ offset7_SD); four texture parameters (Correlation_all direction_offset1_SD, cluster prominence _angle 90_offset4, Inertia_all direction_offset7_SD, and cluster shade_angle 45_offset7); five grey level run-length matrix parameters (grey level nonuniformity_angle 90_offset1, grey level nonuniformity_all direction_offset4_SD, long run high grey level emphasis_all direction_offset1_SD, long run emphasis_all direction_ offset4_ SD, and long run high grey level emphasis_all direction_offset4_SD); and two form factor parameters (surface area and maximum 3D diameter). The AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of the model of textural feature parameters were 0.917, 85.42%, and 86.36%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The model of textural feature parameters showed good diagnostic performance for PFCD. The texture feature parameters of the rectum and anal canal in FS-T2WI are helpful to distinguish PFCD from glandular anal fistula.

Drought stress detection technique for wheat crop using machine learning

The workflow of this research is based on numerous hypotheses involving the usage of pre-processing methods, wheat canopy segmentation methods, and whether the existing models from the past research can be adapted to classify wheat crop water stress. Hence, to construct an automation model for water stress detection, it was found that pre-processing operations known as total variation with L1 data fidelity term (TV-L1) denoising with a Primal-Dual algorithm and min-max contrast stretching are most useful. For wheat canopy segmentation curve fit based K-means algorithm (Cfit-kmeans) was also validated for the most accurate segmentation using intersection over union metric. For automated water stress detection, rapid prototyping of machine learning models revealed that there is a need only to explore nine models. After extensive grid search-based hyper-parameter tuning of machine learning algorithms and 10 K fold cross validation it was found that out of nine different machine algorithms tested, the random forest algorithm has the highest global diagnostic accuracy of 91.164% and is the most suitable for constructing water stress detection models.

A discriminative shape-texture convolutional neural network for early diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis from X-ray images

Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of physical disability worldwide associated with a significant personal and socioeconomic burden. Deep Learning approaches based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) achieved remarkable improvements in knee OA detection. Despite this success, the problem of early knee OA diagnosis from plain radiographs remains a challenging task. This is due to the high similarity between the X-ray images of OA and non-OA subjects and the disappearance of texture information regarding bone microarchitecture changes in the top layers during the learning process of the CNN models. To address these issues, we propose a Discriminative Shape-Texture Convolutional Neural Network (DST-CNN), which automatically diagnoses early knee OA from X-ray images. The proposed model incorporates a discriminative loss to improve class separability and deal with high inter-class similarities. In addition, a new Gram Matrix Descriptor (GMD) block is embedded in the CNN architecture to compute texture features from several intermediate layers and combine them with the shape features in the top layers. We show that merging texture features with deep ones leads to better prediction of the early stages of OA. Comprehensive experimental results on two large public databases, Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) and Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) demonstrate the potential of the proposed network. Ablation studies and visualizations are provided for a detailed understanding of our proposed approach.
