Visualization of Porous Composite Battery Electrode Fabrication Dynamics for Different Formulations and Conditions Using Hard X-ray Microradiography

Porous composite battery electrode performance is influenced by a large number of manufacturing decisions. While it is common to evaluate only finished electrodes when making process adjustments, one must then make inferences about the fabrication process dynamics from static results, which makes process optimization very costly and time-consuming. To get information about the dynamics of the manufacturing processes of these composites, we have built a miniature coating and drying apparatus capable of fabricating lab-scale electrode laminates while operating within an X-ray beamline hutch. Using this tool, we have collected the first radiography image sequences of lab-scale battery electrode coatings in profile, taken throughout drying processes conducted under industrially relevant conditions. To assist with interpretation of these image sequences, we developed an automated image analysis program. Here, we discuss our observations of battery electrode slurry samples, including stratification and long-term fluid flow, and their relevance to composite electrode manufacturing.

Controlling Anti-Penetration Performance by Post-Grafting of Fluorinated Alkyl Chains onto Polystyrene-block-poly(vinyl methyl siloxane)

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been widely used as a surface coating material, which has been reported to possess dynamic omniphobicity to a wide range of both polar and nonpolar solvents due to its high segmental flexibility and mobility. However, such high flexibility and mobility also enable penetration of small molecules into PDMS coatings, which alter the chemical and physical properties of the coating layers. To improve the anti-penetration properties of PDMS, a series of fluorinated alkyl segments are grafted to a diblock copolymer of polystyrene-block-poly(vinyl methyl siloxane) (PS-b-PVMS) using thiol-ene click reactions. This article reports the chemical characterization of these model fluorosilicone block copolymers and uses fluorescence measurements to investigate the dye penetration characteristics of polymer thin films. The introduction of longer fluorinated alkyl chains can gradually increase the anti-penetration properties as the time to reach the maximum fluorescence intensity (tpeak) gradually increases from 11 s of PS-b-PVMS to more than 1000 s of PS-b-P(n-C6F13-VMS). The improvement of anti-penetration properties is attributed to stronger inter-/intrachain interactions, phase segregation of ordered fluorinated side chains, and enhanced hydrophobicity caused by the grafting of fluorinated alkyl chains.

Impact of Impedance Levels on Recording Quality in Flexible Neural Probes

Flexible neural probes are attractive emerging technologies for brain recording because they can effectively record signals with minimal risk of brain damage. Reducing the electrode impedance of the probe before recording is a common practice of many researchers. However, studies investigating the impact of low impedance levels on high-quality recordings using flexible neural probes are lacking. In this study, we electrodeposited Pt onto a commercial flexible polyimide neural probe and investigated the relationship between the impedance level and the recording quality. The probe was inserted into the brains of anesthetized mice. The electrical signals of neurons in the brain, specifically the ventral posteromedial nucleus of the thalamus, were recorded at impedance levels of 50, 250, 500 and 1000 kΩ at 1 kHz. The study results demonstrated that as the impedance decreased, the quality of the signal recordings did not consistently improve. This suggests that extreme lowering of the impedance may not always be advantageous in the context of flexible neural probes.

High-Performance Single-Crystal Lithium-Rich Layered Oxides Cathode Materials via Na2WO4-Assisted Sintering

Single-crystal lithium-rich layered oxides (LLOs) with excellent mechanical properties can enhance their crystal structure stability. However, the conventional methods for preparing single-crystal LLOs, require large amounts of molten salt additives, involve complicated washing steps, and increase the difficulty of large-scale production. In this study, a sodium tungstate (Na2WO4)-assisted sintering method is proposed to fabricate high-performance single-crystal LLOs cathode materials without large amounts of additives and additional washing steps. During the sintering process, Na2WO4 promotes particle growth and forms a protective coating on the surface of LLOs particles, effectively suppressing the side reactions at the cathode/electrolyte interface. Additionally, trace amounts of Na and W atoms are doped into the LLOs lattice via gradient doping. Experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that Na and W doping stabilizes the crystal structure and enhances the Li+ ions diffusion rate. The prepared single-crystal LLOs exhibit outstanding capacity retention of 82.7% (compared to 65.0%, after 200 cycles at 1 C) and a low voltage decay rate of 0.76 mV per cycle (compared to 1.80 mV per cycle). This strategy provides a novel pathway for designing the next-generation high-performance cathode materials for Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Abrasive Wear Behavior of Batch Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings

In recent decades, batch hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel has proven itself in practical applications due to the good corrosion resistance of its components. Despite the importance of the mechanical-load-bearing capacity of these coatings, the wear behavior has, so far, only been investigated very sporadically and not systematically, so a quantification of the wear behavior and statements on the mechanisms are vague. Therefore, two body wear tests with bonded abrasive grain were carried out. Varying the friction rolls, load, and total number of cycles, the wear behavior was investigated. The mass loss and the layer thickness reduction were measured at different intervals. After the test, the microstructure in the cross-section and the hardness according to Vickers (0.01 HV) were evaluated. The results showed that the wear behavior of HDG coatings against abrasive loads can be characterized with the selected test conditions. Initially, the applied load removed the soft η-phase. As the total number of cycles increases, the η- and ζ-phases deform plastically, resulting in a lower mass reduction compared to that expected from the measured layer thickness. The characteristic structure of a batch HDG coating with hard intermetallic Zn-Fe phases and an outer pure zinc phase has demonstrated effective resistance to abrasion.

Wear Behavior of Epoxy Resin Reinforced with Ceramic Nano- and Microparticles

Cavitation erosion poses a significant challenge in fluid systems like hydraulic turbines and ship propellers due to pulsed pressure from collapsing vapor bubbles. To combat this, various materials and surface engineering methods are employed. In this study, nano and micro scale particles of silicon carbide (SiC) or boron carbide (B4C) were incorporated as reinforcement at 6% and 12% ratios, owing to their exceptional resistance to abrasive wear and high hardness. Microparticles were incorporated to assess the damage incurred during the tests in comparison to nanoparticles. Wear tests were conducted on both bulk samples and coated aluminum sheets with a 1mm of composite. Additionally, cavitation tests were performed on coated aluminum tips until stability of mass loss was achieved. The results indicated a distinct wear behavior between the coatings and the bulk samples. Overall, wear tended to be higher for the coated samples with nanocomposites than bulk, except for the nano-composite material containing 12% SiC and pure resin. With the coatings, higher percentages of nanometric particles correlated with increased wear. The coefficient of friction remained within the range of 0.4 to 0.5 for the coatings. Regarding the accumulated erosion in the cavitation tests for 100 min, it was observed that for all nanocomposite materials, it was lower than in pure resin. Particularly, the composite with 6% B4C was slightly lower than the rest. In addition, the erosion rate was also lower for the composites.

pH-Responsive, Thermoset Polymer Coatings for Active Protection against Aluminum Corrosion

This paper describes the synthesis and use of multifunctional methacrylic monomers, which contain basic (amine) functional groups, including an example in which an acid-labile tert-butylcarbamate-protected glycine is used to form a novel methacrylic monomer. The "protected" amino acid-derived functional monomer (BOC-Gly-MA) is copolymerized with an epoxide functional methacrylic monomer (GMA), to deliver novel multifunctional polymers, which are processed into powder coatings and used to study filiform corrosion at the surface of an aluminum substrate. The BOC-Gly-MA-containing copolymers were shown to improve a coating's anticorrosion performance, presenting the lowest average filiform corrosion (FFC) track length, total FFC number, and total corroded surface area (CSA) of the coatings investigated. Further to this, a mode of action for the role of BOC-Gly functional polymers in corrosion protection is proposed, supported by both solution and polymer-aluminum interface studies, delivering new insights into the mode of action of pH-responsive polymer coatings.

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of the osseointegration capacity of a polycarbonate-urethane zirconium-oxide composite material for application in a focal knee resurfacing implant

Currently available focal knee resurfacing implants (FKRIs) are fully or partially composed of metals, which show a large disparity in elastic modulus relative to bone and cartilage tissue. Although titanium is known for its excellent osseointegration, the application in FKRIs can lead to potential stress-shielding and metal implants can cause degeneration of the opposing articulating cartilage due to the high resulting contact stresses. Furthermore, metal implants do not allow for follow-up using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).To overcome the drawbacks of using metal based FKRIs, a biomimetic and MRI compatible bi-layered non-resorbable thermoplastic polycarbonate-urethane (PCU)-based FKRI was developed. The objective of this preclinical study was to evaluate the mechanical properties, biocompatibility and osteoconduction of a novel Bionate® 75D - zirconium oxide (B75D-ZrO2 ) composite material in vitro and the osseointegration of a B75D-ZrO2 composite stem PCU implant in a caprine animal model. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the B75D-ZrO2 composite were characterized through in vitro mechanical tests under ambient and physiological conditions. In vitro biocompatibility and osteoconductivity were evaluated by exposing human mesenchymal stem cells to the B75D-ZrO2 composite and culturing the cells under osteogenic conditions. Cell activity and mineralization were assessed and compared to Bionate® 75D (B75D) and titanium disks. The in vivo osseointegration of implants containing a B75D-ZrO2 stem was compared to implants with a B75D stem and titanium stem in a caprine large animal model. After a follow-up of 6 months, bone histomorphometry was performed to assess the bone-to-implant contact area (BIC). Mechanical testing showed that the B75D-ZrO2 composite material possesses an elastic modulus in the range of the elastic modulus reported for trabecular bone. The B75D-ZrO2 composite material facilitated cell mediated mineralization to a comparable extent as titanium. A significantly higher bone-to-implant contact (BIC) score was observed in the B75D-ZrO2 implants compared to the B75D implants. The BIC of B75D-ZrO2 implants was not significantly different compared to titanium implants. A biocompatible B75D-ZrO2 composite approximating the elastic modulus of trabecular bone was developed by compounding B75D with zirconium oxide. In vivo evaluation showed an significant increase of osseointegration for B75D-ZrO2 composite stem implants compared to B75D polymer stem PCU implants. The osseointegration of B75D-ZrO2 composite stem PCU implants was not significantly different in comparison to analogous titanium stem metal implants.

In vitro and in vivo study of antibacterial and anti-encrustation coating on ureteric stents

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the ability of propolis-coated ureteric stents to solve complications, especially urinary tract infections (UTIs) and crusting, in patients with long-term indwelling ureteric stents through antimicrobial and anti-calculus activities.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Polyurethane (PU) ureteric stents were immersed in the ethanol extract of propolis (EEP), a well-known antimicrobial honeybee product, and subjected to chemical, hydrophilic, and seismic tests. The antimicrobial activity of the EEP coating was then examined by in vitro investigation. Proteus mirabilis infection was induced in rats within uncoated and EEP-coated groups, and the infection, stone formation, and inflammation were monitored at various time points.

RESULTS

The characterisation results showed that the hydrophilicity and stability of the EEP surface improved. In vitro tests revealed that the EEP coating was biocompatible, could eliminate >90% of bacteria biofilms attached to the stent and could maintain bacteriostatic properties for up to 3 months. The in vivo experiment revealed that the EEP-coating significantly reduced the amount of bacteria, stones, and salt deposits on the surface of the ureteric stents and decreased inflammation in the host tissue.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with clinically used PU stents, EEP-coated ureteric stents could better mitigate infections and prevent encrustation. Thus, this study demonstrated that propolis is a promising natural dressing material for ureteric stents.

A bioinspired approach for the modulation of electroosmotic flow and protein-surface interactions in capillary electrophoresis using silylated amino-amides blocks and covalent grafting

We explore a bioinspired approach to design tailored functionalized capillary electrophoresis (CE) surfaces based on covalent grafting for biomolecules analysis. First, the approach aims to overcome well-known common obstacles in CE protein analysis affecting considerably the CE performance (asymmetry, resolution, and repeatability) such as the unspecific adsorption on fused silica surface and the lack of control of electroosmotic flow (EOF). Then, our approach, which relies on new amino-amide mimic hybrid precursors synthesized by silylation of amino-amides (Si-AA) derivatives with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane, aims to recapitulate the diversity of protein-protein interactions (π-π stacking, ionic, Van der Waals…) found in physiological condition (bioinspired approach) to improve the performance of CE protein analysis (electrochromatography). As a proof of concept, these silylated Si-AA (tyrosinamide silylation, serinamide silylation, argininamide silylation, leucinamide silylation, and isoglutamine silylation acid) have been covalently grafted in physiological conditions in different amount on bare fused silica capillary giving rise to a biomimetic coating and allowing both the modulation of EOF and protein-surface interactions. The analytical performances of amino-amide functionalized capillaries were assessed using lysozyme, cytochrome C and ribonuclease A and compared to traditional capillary coatings poly(ethylene oxide), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), and sodium poly(styrenesulfonate). EOF, protein adsorption rate, protein retention factor k, and selectivity were determined for each coating. All results obtained showed this approach allowed to modulate the EOF, reduce unspecific adsorption, and generate specific interactions with proteins by varying the nature and the amount of Si-AA in the functionalization mixture.

Spray dried acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC) juice particles to produce phytochemical-rich starch-based edible films

This study aimed to produce spray dried acerola juice microparticles with different protein carriers to be incorporated into edible starch films. The microparticles were evaluated for solids recovery, polyphenol retention, solubility, hygroscopicity, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction, phytochemical compounds and antioxidant activity. Acerola microparticles produced with WPI/hydrolysed collagen carriers (AWC) with higher solids recovery (53.5 ± 0.34% w/w), polyphenol retention (74.4 ± 0.44% w/w), high solubility in water (85.2 ± 0.4% w/w), total polyphenol content (128.45 ± 2.44 mg GAE/g) and good storage stability were selected to produce starch-based films by casting. As a result, cassava films with water vapour permeability of 0.29 ± 0.07 g mm/m2 h KPa, polyphenol content of 10.15 ± 0.22 mg GAE/g film and DPPH radical scavenging activity of 6.57 ± 0.13 μM TE/g film, with greater migration of polyphenol to water (6.30 ± 0.52 mg GAE/g film) were obtained. Our results show that the incorporation of phytochemical-rich fruit microparticles is a promising strategy to create biodegradable edible films.

Plasma-Activated Polydimethylsiloxane Microstructured Pattern with Collagen for Improved Myoblast Cell Guidance

We focused on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a substrate for replication, micropatterning, and construction of biologically active surfaces. The novelty of this study is based on the combination of the argon plasma exposure of a micropatterned PDMS scaffold, where the plasma served as a strong tool for subsequent grafting of collagen coatings and their application as cell growth scaffolds, where the standard was significantly exceeded. As part of the scaffold design, templates with a patterned microstructure of different dimensions (50 × 50, 50 × 20, and 30 × 30 μm2) were created by photolithography followed by pattern replication on a PDMS polymer substrate. Subsequently, the prepared microstructured PDMS replicas were coated with a type I collagen layer. The sample preparation was followed by the characterization of material surface properties using various analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To evaluate the biocompatibility of the produced samples, we conducted studies on the interactions between selected polymer replicas and micro- and nanostructures and mammalian cells. Specifically, we utilized mouse myoblasts (C2C12), and our results demonstrate that we achieved excellent cell alignment in conjunction with the development of a cytocompatible surface. Consequently, the outcomes of this research contribute to an enhanced comprehension of surface properties and interactions between structured polymers and mammalian cells. The use of periodic microstructures has the potential to advance the creation of novel materials and scaffolds in tissue engineering. These materials exhibit exceptional biocompatibility and possess the capacity to promote cell adhesion and growth.

Effect of Low-Temperature Oxygen Plasma Treatment of Titanium Alloy Surface on Tannic Acid Coating Deposition

In this study, the effect of low-temperature oxygen plasma treatment with various powers of a titanium alloy surface on the structural and morphological properties of a substrate and the deposition of a tannic acid coating was investigated. The surface characteristics of the titanium alloy were evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. Following this, the tannic acid coatings were deposited on the titanium alloy substrates and the structural and morphological properties of the tannic acid coatings deposited were subject to characterization by XPS, SEM, and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) measurements. The results show that the low-temperature oxygen plasma treatment of titanium alloys leads to the formation of titanium dioxides that contain -OH groups on the surface being accompanied by a reduction in carbon, which imparts hydrophilicity to the titanium substrate, and the effect increases with the applied plasma power. The performed titanium alloy substrate modification translates into the quality of the deposited tannic acid coating standing out by higher uniformity of the coating, lower number of defects indicating delamination or incomplete bonding of the coating with the substrate, lower number of cracks, thinner cracks, and higher thickness of the tannic acid coatings compared to the non-treated titanium alloy substrate. A similar effect is observed as the applied plasma power increases.

Biofabrication of biomimetic undulating microtopography at the dermal-epidermal junction and its effects on the growth and differentiation of epidermal cells

The undulating microtopography located at the junction of the dermis and epidermis of the native skin is called rete ridges (RRs), which plays an important role in enhancing keratinocyte function, improving skin structure and stability, and providing three-dimensional (3D) microenvironment for skin cells. Despite some progress in recent years, most currently designed and manufactured tissue-engineered skin models still cannot replicate the RRs, resulting in a lack of biological signals in the manufactured skin models. In this study, a composite manufacturing method including electrospinning, 3D printing, and functional coating was developed to produce the epidermal models with RRs. Polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers were firstly electrospun to mimic the extracellular matrix environment and be responsible for cell attachment. PCL microfibers were then printed onto top of the PCL nanofibers layer by 3D printing to quickly prepare undulating microtopography and finally the entire structures were dip-coated with gelatin hydrogel to form a functional coating layer. The morphology, chemical composition, and structural properties of the fabricated models were studied. The results proved that the multi-process composite fabricated models were suitable for skin tissue engineering. Live and dead staining, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) as well as histology (haematoxylin and eosin (HE) methodology) and immunofluorescence (primary and secondary antibodies combination assay) were used to investigate the viability, metabolic activity, and differentiation of skin cells forin vitroculturing.In vitroresults showed that each model had high cell viability, good proliferation, and the expression of differentiation marker. It was worth noting that the sizes of the RRs affected the cell growth status of the epidermal models. In addition, the unique undulation characteristics of the epidermal-dermal junction can be reproduced in the developed epidermal models. Overall, thesein vitrohuman epidermal models can provide valuable reference for skin transplantation, screening and safety evaluation of drugs and cosmetics.

Benchmarking of Coatings for Cathode Active Materials in Solid-State Batteries Using Surface Analysis and Reference Electrodes

Fast and reliable evaluation of degradation and performance of cathode active materials (CAMs) for solid-state batteries (SSBs) is crucial to help better understand these systems and enable the synthesis of well-performing CAMs. However, there is a lack of well-thought-out procedures to reliably evaluate CAMs in SSBs. Current approaches often rely on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for the evaluation of degradation. Unfortunately, XPS sensitivity is not very high, and minor but relevant degradation products may not be detected and distinguished. Furthermore, degradation caused by the current collector (CC) itself is usually not distinguished from CAM-induced degradation. This study uses a modified CC, which allows us to separate electrochemical degradation caused by the CC from degradation at the CAM itself. Using this CC, we present an approach using time-of-flight secondary ions mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) that offers high sensitivity and reliability. Principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to differentiate secondary ions as well as identify those mass fragments that correlate with degradation products. This approach also enables distinguishing between different pathways of degradation. To evaluate the kinetic performance of the samples, three-electrode rate tests are performed. Electrochemical characterization evaluates the kinetic performance of the samples under investigation. The samples are finally rated with a score that allows a reliable comparison between the different materials and offers a complete picture of the materials' characteristics in terms of electrochemical performance and degradation.

Scaled Production of Functionally Gradient Thin Films Using Slot Die Coating on a Roll-to-Roll System

Polymer thin films with a cross-web gradient structure is a burgeoning area of research, having received more attention in the last two decades, for improvements in the performance and material properties. Such patterned films have been fabricated using several techniques, but in practice these techniques are non-scalable, material-dependent, wasteful, and not highly efficient. Slot die coating, a well-known scalable manufacturing process, is used to fabricate gradient polymer thin films which will be investigated herein. By incorporating slot die with the custom roll-to-roll imaging system, gradient thin films are successfully fabricated by forcing two fluidic materials into the slot die simultaneously and by manipulating the viscous, diffusive, and inertial forces. The materials will be allowed to intermix, with the aim of having approximately a 50% mix along the centerline of any two contiguous stripes. Moreover, several characterizations such as FTIR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and SEM are performed to assess the quality of the gradient polymer thin films. The gradient structure fabricated using functional and nonfunctional materials has successfully improved the functional properties compared to fully blended two materials. This work will provide an understanding of the mechanisms to obtain gradient polymer thin-film structures that exhibit the desired geometric structure and performance.

Reactive Amine Functionalized Microelectrode Arrays Provide Short-Term Benefit but Long-Term Detriment to In Vivo Recording Performance

Intracortical microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are used for recording neural signals. However, indwelling devices result in chronic neuroinflammation, which leads to decreased recording performance through degradation of the device and surrounding tissue. Coating the MEAs with bioactive molecules is being explored to mitigate neuroinflammation. Such approaches often require an intermediate functionalization step such as (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), which serves as a linker. However, the standalone effect of this intermediate step has not been previously characterized. Here, we investigated the effect of coating MEAs with APTES by comparing APTES-coated to uncoated controls in vivo and ex vivo. First, we measured water contact angles between silicon uncoated and APTES-coated substrates to verify the hydrophilic characteristics of the APTES coating. Next, we implanted MEAs in the motor cortex (M1) of Sprague-Dawley rats with uncoated or APTES-coated devices. We assessed changes in the electrochemical impedance and neural recording performance over a chronic implantation period of 16 weeks. Additionally, histology and bulk gene expression were analyzed to understand further the reactive tissue changes arising from the coating. Results showed that APTES increased the hydrophilicity of the devices and decreased electrochemical impedance at 1 kHz. APTES coatings proved detrimental to the recording performance, as shown by a constant decay up to 16 weeks postimplantation. Bulk gene analysis showed differential changes in gene expression between groups that were inconclusive with regard to the long-term effect on neuronal tissue. Together, these results suggest that APTES coatings are ultimately detrimental to chronic neural recordings. Furthermore, interpretations of studies using APTES as a functionalization step should consider the potential consequences if the final functionalization step is incomplete.

Antibiofilm Activity of Eugenol-Loaded Chitosan Coatings against Common Medical-Device-Contaminating Bacteria

The formation of pathogenic biofilms on medical devices is a major public health concern accounting for over 65% of healthcare-associated infections and causing high infection morbidity, mortality, and a great burden to patients and the healthcare system due to its resistance to treatment. In this study, we developed a chitosan-based antimicrobial coating with embedded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to load and deliver eugenol, an essential oil component, to inhibit the biofilm formation of common bacteria in medical-device-related infections. The eugenol-loaded MSNs were dispersed in a chitosan solution, which was then cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and drop-casted to obtain coatings. The MSNs and coatings were characterized by dynamic light scattering, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, attenuated-total-reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 3D optical profilometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The release behavior of eugenol-loaded MSNs and coatings and the antibiofilm and antimicrobial activity of the coatings against adherent Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were investigated. Eugenol was released from the MSNs and coatings in aqueous conditions in a controlled manner with an initial low release, followed by a peak release, a decrease, and a plateau. While the chitosan coatings alone or with unloaded MSNs demonstrated limited antimicrobial effects and still supported biofilm formation after 24 h, the coating containing eugenol not only reduced biofilm formation but also killed the majority of the attached bacteria. It also showed biocompatibility in indirect contact with NIH/3T3 fibroblasts and a high percentage of live cells in direct contact. However, further investigations into cell proliferation in direct contact are recommended. The findings indicated that the chitosan-based coating with eugenol-loaded MSNs could be developed into an effective strategy to inhibit biofilm formation on medical devices.

In Situ Metallic Coating of Atom Probe Specimen for Enhanced Yield, Performance, and Increased Field-of-View

Atom probe tomography requires needle-shaped specimens with a diameter typically below 100 nm, making them both very fragile and reactive, and defects (notches at grain boundaries or precipitates) are known to affect the yield and data quality. The use of a conformal coating directly on the sharpened specimen has been proposed to increase yield and reduce background. However, to date, these coatings have been applied ex situ and mostly are not uniform. Here, we report on the controlled focused-ion beam in situ deposition of a thin metal film on specimens immediately after specimen preparation. Different metallic targets e.g. Cr were attached to a micromanipulator via a conventional lift-out method and sputtered using Ga or Xe ions. We showcase the many advantages of coating specimens from metallic to nonmetallic materials. We have identified an increase in data quality and yield, an improvement of the mass resolution, as well as an increase in the effective field-of-view. This wider field-of-view enables visualization of the entire original specimen, allowing to detect the complete surface oxide layer around the specimen. The ease of implementation of the approach makes it very attractive for generalizing its use across a very wide range of atom probe analyses.

Long-term detection of Hartmannibacter diazotrophicus on winter wheat and spring barley roots under field conditions revealed positive correlations on yield parameters with the bacterium abundance

Monitoring of bioinoculants once released into the field remains largely unexplored; thus, more information is required about their survival and interactions after root colonization. Therefore, specific primers were used to perform a long-term tracking to elucidate the effect of Hartmannibacter diazotrophicus on wheat and barley production at two experimental organic agriculture field stations. Three factors were evaluated: organic fertilizer application (with and without), row spacing (15 and 50 cm), and bacterial inoculation (H. diazotrophicus and control without bacteria). Hartmannibacter diazotrophicus was detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction on the roots (up to 5 × 105 copies g-1 dry weight) until advanced developmental stages under field conditions during two seasons, and mostly in one farm. Correlation analysis showed a significant effect of H. diazotrophicus copy numbers on the yield parameters straw yield (increase of 453 kg ha-1 in wheat compared to the mean) and crude grain protein concentration (increase of 0.30% in wheat and 0.80% in barley compared to the mean). Our findings showed an apparently constant presence of H. diazotrophicus on both wheat and barley roots until 273 and 119 days after seeding, respectively, and its addition and concentration in the roots are associated with higher yields in one crop.

Investigating the Behavior of Thin-Film Formation over Time as a Function of Precursor Concentration and Gas Residence Time in Nitrogen Dielectric Barrier Discharge

This study aims to establish a correlation between the fragmentation process and the growth mechanisms of a coating deposited on a fluoropolymer. Deposition was carried out using dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure, employing an oxygen-containing organic precursor in a nitrogen environment. The findings reveal that the impact of precursor concentration on the formation of specific functionalities is more significant than the influence of treatment time. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results obtained indicate a reduction in the N/O ratio on the coating's surface as the precursor concentration in the discharge increases. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, conducted in the spectral range of 1500 cm-1 to 1800 cm-1, confirmed the connection between the chemical properties of plasma-deposited thin films and the concentration of organic precursors in the discharge. Furthermore, the emergence of nitrile moieties (C≡N) in the FTIR spectrum at 2160 cm-1 was noted under specific experimental conditions.

The Effect of Polyacrylate Emulsion Coating with Unmodified and Modified Nano-TiO2 on Weathering Resistance of Untreated and Heat-Treated Wood

In this research, the influence of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and their modifications on the weathering resistance of untreated and heat-treated wood was studied. The wood samples were coated with polyacrylate waterborne emulsion coatings that contain nano-TiO2 in the amount of 0.75 wt.%. Two types of modifiers were used to modify the nano-TiO2 surface: 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride (AIBA) and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (AMPTS). Coated and uncoated wood samples were exposed to accelerated weathering by application of sunlight, water and moisture for 360 h. During the research, the dry film thickness, color, gloss and hardness of the surface of the samples were measured. The obtained results showed that the effect of the addition and surface modification of nano-TiO2 on the color and gloss stability was different on untreated and heat-treated ash wood, and that accelerated weathering causes an increase in surface hardness and a decrease in thickness of the dry coating.

Tribological Properties of a Sliding Joint with an a-C:H:W Coating under Lubrication Conditions with PAO8 Oil and the Addition of 2% MoS2 Nanoparticles

One of the promising methods for improving the durability and reliability of friction joints in combustion engines is the use of thin and hard coatings, including coatings based on amorphous DLC. The a-C:H:W coating was produced using the commercial PVD method. The tested tribological joints were made of AISI 4337 steel and SAE-48 bearing alloy (conformal contact) and AISI 4337 steel and valve shims (non-conformal contact). The contact area was lubricated with SAE 5W40 engine oil and PAO8 oil + 2 wt.% MoS2 nanoparticles. The objective of this work is to explore the influence of PAO8 + MoS2 on the tribological properties of a sliding joint with an a-C:H:W coating and the change in the properties of the oils. In the conformal contact, the lubrication of the a-C:H:W coating with PAO8 + MoS2 caused a significant increase in the friction resistance (than in) as compared to the joints with a quenching and tempering surface layer and lubricated SAE 5W40, while in the non-conformal contact, the lubrication of the a-C:H:W coating with PAO8 + MoS2 caused a decrease in the friction resistance and temperature of the contact area. The joints with the a-C:H:W coating were characterized by higher wear of the SAE-48 bearing alloy, as compared to the joints with the surface layer without coating (lubricated with SAE 5W40 oil-11-fold increase, PAO8 + MoS2-46-fold increase). The wear of valve shims with the a-C:H:W coating was significantly lower as compared to the wear of the commercial version of the valve shims (the difference between joints lubricated with SAE 5W40 oil and PAO8 + MoS2 was 12%, 36% and 29% for unit pressures of 10, 15 and 20 MPa). Lubrication of the a-C:H:W coating with PAO8 oil + MoS2 protected the sliding joints against seizing in non-conformal contact.

A One-Step Approach for a Durable and Highly Hydrophobic Coating for Flax Fabrics for Self-Cleaning Application

Highly hydrophobic flax fabrics with durable properties were prepared using the "dip-coating" method for self-cleaning application. Flax fabrics were coated with a polysiloxane coating via a hydrosilylation reaction with a Karstedt catalyst at room temperature. The coated fabrics displayed highly and durable hydrophobic properties (contact angle and sliding angle of about 145° and 23°, respectively) with good self-cleaning ability for certain pollutants and excellent durability. Moreover, the influence of the coating process on the mechanical properties of fabrics was investigated. A decrease in E modulus and an increase in tensile stress at maximum force and elongation at maximum force has been observed. Furthermore, this influence of the coating process can be easily controlled by adjusting the proportion of curing agent in the treatment solution.

Comparison of Superhydrophilic, Liquid-Like, Liquid-Infused, and Superhydrophobic Surfaces in Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection and Encrustation

Over the past decade, superhydrophilic zwitterionic surfaces, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces, covalently attached liquid-like surfaces, and superhydrophobic surfaces have emerged as the most promising strategies to prevent biofouling on biomedical devices. Despite working through different mechanisms, they have demonstrated superior efficacy in preventing the adhesion of biomolecules (e.g., proteins and bacteria) compared with conventional material surfaces. However, their potential in combating catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) remains uncertain. In this research, we present the fabrication of these four coatings for urinary catheters and conduct a comparative assessment of their antifouling properties through a stepwise approach. Notably, the superhydrophilic zwitterionic coating demonstrated the highest antifouling activity, reducing 72.3% of fibrinogen deposition and over 75% of bacterial adhesion (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) when compared with an uncoated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) surface. The zwitterionic coating also exhibited robust repellence against blood and improved surface lubricity, decreasing the dynamic coefficient of friction from 0.63 to 0.35 as compared with the PVC surface. Despite the fact that the superhydrophilic zwitterionic and hydrophobic liquid-like surfaces showed great promise in retarding crystalline biofilm formation in the presence of Proteus mirabilis, it is worth noting that their long-term antifouling efficacy may be compromised by the proliferation and migration of colonized bacteria as they are unable to kill them or inhibit their swarming. These findings underscore both the potential and limitations of these ultralow fouling materials as urinary catheter coatings for preventing CAUTI.

Dual-Protection Inorganic-Protein Coating on Mg-Based Biomaterials through Tooth-Enamel-Inspired Biomineralization

Biocompatible magnesium alloys represent revolutionary implantable materials in dentistry and orthopedics but face challenges due to rapid biocorrosion, necessitating protective coatings to mitigate dysfunction. Directly integrating durable protective coatings onto Mg surfaces is challenging because of intrinsic low coating compactness. Herein, inspired by tooth enamel, a novel highly compact dual-protection inorganic-protein (inorganicPro) coating is in situ constructed on Mg surfaces through bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein-boosted reaction between sodium fluoride (NaF) and Mg substrates. The association of Mg ions and BSA establishes a local hydrophobic domain that lowers the formation enthalpy of NaMgF3 nanoparticles. This process generates finer nanoparticles that function as "bricks," facilitating denser packing, consequently reducing voidage inside coatings by over 50% and reinforcing mechanical durability. Moreover, the incorporation of BSA in and on the coatings plays two synergistic roles: 1) acting as "mortar" to seal residual cracks within coatings, thereby promoting coating compactness and tripling anticorrosion performance, and 2) mitigating fouling-accelerated biocorrosion in complex biosystems via tenfold resistance against biofoulant attachments, including biofluids, proteins, and metabolites. This innovative strategy, leveraging proteins to alter inorganic reactions, benefits the future coating design for Mg-based and other metallic materials with tailored anticorrosion and antifouling performances.

pH-Responsive Graphene Oxide-Based 2D/3D Composite for Enhancing Anti-Corrosion Properties of Epoxy Coating

The functionalized graphene oxide (GO)-based composites as fillers added into organic coatings are desired for realizing the longstanding corrosion protection of carbon steel. Here, the pH-responsive two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) GO-based composite (ZIF-90-AAP/GO) was developed by environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor 4-aminoantipyrine (AAP) anchored on the in situ growth of zeolite imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) on the GO surface (ZIF-90/GO) through the Schiff base reaction. The active filler (ZIF-90-AAP/GO) was incorporated into an epoxy coating (EP) to obtain a high-performance self-healing coating on the surface of carbon steel. ZIF-90-AAP can greatly improve dispersion and compatibility of GO in EP. The low-frequency impedance modulus of ZIF-90-AAP/GO-EP can still reach up to 1.35 × 1010 Ω⋅cm2 after 40 days, which is about three orders of magnitude higher than that of the EP containing GO (GO-EP) relying on its passive and active corrosion protection. Meanwhile, ZIF-90-AAP/GO-EP exhibits excellent self-healing performance. The self-healing rate of ZIF-90-AAP/GO changes from negative to positive after 24 h, which results from the effective corrosion inhibition activity of ZIF-90-AAP for carbon steel based on the pH-triggered controlled release of AAP. The developed pH-responsive 2D/3D GO-based composite coating is very attractive for the corrosion protection of carbon steel.

Silicone-geranium essential oil blend for long-term antifouling coatings

This study explores the potential of geranium essential oil as a natural solution for combating marine biofouling, addressing the environmental concerns associated with commercial antifouling coatings. Compounds with bactericidal activities were identified by 13Carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed minimal impact on film thermal stability, maintaining suitability for antifouling applications. The addition of essential oil induced changes in the morphology of the film and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis indicated that oil remained within the film. Optical microscopy showed an increase in coating porosity after immersion in a marine environment. A total of 18 bacterial colonies were isolated, with Psychrobacter adeliensis and Shewanella algidipiscicola being the predominant biofilm-forming species. The geranium essential oil-based coating demonstrated the ability to reduce the formation of Psychrobacter adeliensis biofilms and effectively inhibit macrofouling adhesion for a duration of 11 months.

Rapid Prototyping of Thermoplastic Microfluidic 3D Cell Culture Devices by Creating Regional Hydrophilicity Discrepancy

Microfluidic 3D cell culture devices that enable the recapitulation of key aspects of organ structures and functions in vivo represent a promising preclinical platform to improve translational success during drug discovery. Essential to these engineered devices is the spatial patterning of cells from different tissue types within a confined microenvironment. Traditional fabrication strategies lack the scalability, cost-effectiveness, and rapid prototyping capabilities required for industrial applications, especially for processes involving thermoplastic materials. Here, an approach to pattern fluid guides inside microchannels is introduced by establishing differential hydrophilicity using pressure-sensitive adhesives as masks and a subsequent selective coating with a biocompatible polymer. Optimal coating conditions are identified using polyvinylpyrrolidone, which resulted in rapid and consistent hydrogel flow in both the open-chip prototype and the fully bonded device containing additional features for medium perfusion. The suitability of the device for dynamic 3D cell culture is tested by growing human hepatocytes in the device under controlled fluid flow for a 14-day period. Additionally, the study demonstrated the potential of using the device for pharmaceutical high-throughput screening applications, such as predicting drug-induced liver injury. The approach offers a facile strategy of rapid prototyping thermoplastic microfluidic organ chips with varying geometries, microstructures, and substrate materials.

Nano-Topographically Guided, Biomineralized, 3D-Printed Polycaprolactone Scaffolds with Urine-Derived Stem Cells for Promoting Bone Regeneration

Currently, biomineralization is widely used as a surface modification approach to obtain ideal material surfaces with complex hierarchical nanostructures, morphologies, unique biological functions, and categorized organizations. The fabrication of biomineralized coating for the surfaces of scaffolds, especially synthetic polymer scaffolds, can alter surface characteristics, provide a favorable microenvironment, release various bioactive substances, regulate the cellular behaviors of osteoblasts, and promote bone regeneration after implantation. However, the biomineralized coating fabricated by immersion in a simulated body fluid has the disadvantages of non-uniformity, instability, and limited capacity to act as an effective reservoir of bioactive ions for bone regeneration. In this study, in order to promote the osteoinductivity of 3D-printed PCL scaffolds, we optimized the surface biomineralization procedure by nano-topographical guidance. Compared with biomineralized coating constructed by the conventional method, the nano-topographically guided biomineralized coating possessed more mineral substances and firmly existed on the surface of scaffolds. Additionally, nano-topographically guided biomineralized coating possessed better protein adsorption and ion release capacities. To this end, the present work also demonstrated that nano-topographically guided biomineralized coating on the surface of 3D-printed PCL scaffolds can regulate the cellular behaviors of USCs, guide the osteogenic differentiation of USCs, and provide a biomimetic microenvironment for bone regeneration.

Preparation of Ceramic Fiber Threads with Enhanced Abrasion Resistance Performance

Ceramic fiber thread is one of the key components in flexible external thermal insulation blankets, and it has been applied in various fields as a flexible ceramic fibrous material with excellent deformability and high-temperature resistance. However, ceramic fiber threads are often subjected to reciprocating friction motion at specific bending angles, making them highly susceptible to abrade and fracture. Enhancing the abrasion resistance performance of ceramic fiber threads under bending conditions is the future trend and remains a significant challenge. Hence, we design and construct a novel polyurethane-modified coating on the ceramic fiber threads to improve their abrasion resistance performance. The effects of the types and concentrations of modifiers on the microstructure, abrasion resistance property, and tensile property of ceramic fiber threads are systematically investigated. The ceramic fiber threads, after modification with hexamethylene diisocyanate waterborne polyurethane (HDI-WPU) with a concentration of 3%, exhibit excellent abrasion resistance properties. The number of friction cycles at fracture of the modified ceramic fiber thread is more than three times, and the tensile strength is more than one and a half times, that of the original ceramic fiber thread, demonstrating the great potential of the HDI-WPU modifier for enhancing the abrasion resistance performance of ceramic fiber threads.

Construction and Curing Behavior of Underwater In Situ Repairing Coatings for Offshore Structures

The development of polymeric materials for the repair and reinforcement of damaged sites in water has many practical applications, especially in ocean engineering. However, it is difficult to construct an anticorrosion coating in water. In addition, curing kinetics, which are the key to enhance the performance of coatings, seem to hardly be observed and regulated in an underwater condition. Herein, a novel underwater in situ repairing coating was prepared. Meanwhile, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was applied to observe its curing behavior underwater. Adhesion tests showed that the coatings cured underwater had good adhesion to different substrate surfaces and the ideal ratio of curing agent to epoxy resin was 0.6. Long-term anticorrosive tests demonstrated that the coatings had an excellent anti-corrosion performance. The viscosity changes in different curing stages were well reflected by frequency response characteristics from Bode and Nyquist curves by EIS. Two equivalent electrical circuits were selected to simulate the impedance date at the initial and final curing stage. A formula was put forward to evaluate the curing degree during the curing process. Finally, the effects of temperature and the ingredient ratio on the reaction rate and curing degree were also investigated here. This underwater in situ repairing coating may find applications in many offshore engineering structures in marine environments, and the EIS technique has attractive development and application prospects when observing the curing information of thermosetting resin systems under special circumstances.

Development of a UiO-66 Based Waterborne Flame-Retardant Coating for PC/ABS Material

The flame-retardancy of polymeric materials has garnered great interest. Most of the flame retardants used in copolymers are functionalized additives, which can deteriorate the intrinsic properties of these materials. As a new type of flame retardant, functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used in surface coatings of polymers. To reduce the flammability, a mixture of phytic acid, multi-wall carbon nanotubes, zirconium-based MOFs, and UiO-66 was coated on a PC/ABS substrate. The structure of the UiO-66-based flame retardant was established by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, and SEM. The flammable properties of coated PC/ABS materials were assessed by LOI, a vertical combustion test, TGA, CCT, and Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a UiO-66-based coating on the PC/ABS surface resulted in a good flame-retardant performance. Heat release and smoke generation were significantly reduced. Importantly, the structure and mechanical properties of PC/ABS were less impacted by the presence of the flame-retardant coating. Hence, this work presents a new strategy for the development of high-performance PC/ABC materials with both excellent flame-retardancy and good mechanical properties.

Effect of Immersion Time of Chicken Breast in Potato Starch Coating Containing Lysine on PhIP Levels

This study investigated the effect of immersion time of chicken breasts in potato starch (PS) coating containing amino acids (AAs) on the formation of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo [4,5-b] pyridine (PhIP) and to evaluate a possible mechanism to inhibit the formation of PhIP in chicken breasts during frying. The chicken breasts with standardized dimensions were dipped in the potato starch (PS) coating solution containing 0.25% w/v lysine (Lys) for different times (15 min, 30 min, 1 h, 3 h, and 6 h). After drying the coating on the chickens, samples were fried at 195 °C for 7.5 min on each side. Results showed that the immersion time does not significantly decrease (p < 0.05) the PhIP level, suggesting that 15 min immersion time is enough for PhIP reduction compared to the control chicken samples (without coating). Phenylacetaldehyde (PheAce) was increased in chicken breast coated with PS-0.25% Lys after frying, suggesting that there should be another pathway to prevent the formation of PhIP by the addition of PS-0.25% Lys. Volatile compound analysis also confirmed this and showed increases in many aroma compounds in the coated chicken. Moreover, no significant differences (p < 0.05) were shown between the cooking loss percentage, color parameters, texture profile, and tenderness of chicken with the PS-0.25% coating and chicken without coating.

Characterization of Tannic Acid-Coated AZ31 Mg Alloy for Biomedical Application and Comparison with AZ91

Magnesium alloys are promising materials for bioresorbable implants that will improve patient life and reduce healthcare costs. However, their clinical use is prevented by the rapid degradation and corrosion of magnesium, which leads to a fast loss of mechanical strength and the formation of by-products that can trigger tissue inflammation. Here, a tannic acid coating is proposed to control the degradation of AZ31 and AZ91 alloys, starting from a previous study by the authors on AZ91. The coatings on the two materials were characterized both by the chemical (EDS, FTIR, XPS) and the morphological (SEM, confocal profilometry) point of view. Static degradation tests in PBS and electrochemical measurements in different solutions showed that the protective performances of the tannic acid coatings are strongly affected by the presence of cracks. The presence of fractures in the protective layer generates galvanic couples between the coating scales and the metal, worsening the corrosion resistance. Although degradation control was not achieved, useful insights on the degradation mechanisms of coated Mg surfaces were obtained, as well as key points for future studies: it resulted that the absence of cracks in protective coatings is of uttermost importance for novel biodegradable implants with proper degradation kinetics.

Polyaniline Microspheres with Corrosion Inhibition, Corrosion Sensing, and Photothermal Self-Healing Properties toward Intelligent Coating

A smart coating integrating functions of corrosion inhibition, self-healing, and corrosion-sensing was developed based on a polyaniline (PANI) microsphere-loading corrosion sensing probe (8-hydroxyquinone, 8-HQ). The PANI microsphere was prepared in a facile one-pot process via the combination of photopolymerization and an emulsion template. The 8-HQ-loaded PANI microsphere achieved three synergetic effects simultaneously: corrosion inhibition, corrosion sensing, and photothermal self-healing abilities. Benefiting from the corrosion inhibition effect of PANI, the coating with the PANI microsphere exhibited significantly enhanced anticorrosion behavior. After soaking in NaCl solution for 35 days, its impedance was maintained at 1.26 × 109 Ω·cm2, nearly 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure resin coating. Meanwhile, the encapsulated 8-HQ exhibited pH-responsive release behavior thanks to the pH-responsive characteristics of PANI, which could chelate with Al3+ ions to form 8-HQ-Al3+ coordinates with a conspicuous fluorescence, achieving a real-time corrosion diagnosing function. Moreover, benefiting from the photothermal property of PANI, the coating with the PANI microsphere displayed rapid crack closure behavior under NIR light irradiation, and the healing efficiency could reach 83.56% under near-infrared irradiation. This work presents an innovative strategy for fabricating an intelligent self-healing, self-reporting, and anticorrosion coating, which provides a new vision to prolong the lifetime of metals.

Effect of Liquid Glass-Modified Lignin Waste on the Flammability Properties of Biopolyurethane Foam Composites

Water-blown biopolyurethane (bioPUR) foams are flammable and emit toxic gases during combustion. Herein, a novel approach suggested by the current study is to use different amounts of lignin waste (LigW), which increases the thermal stability and delays the flame spread and sodium silicate (LG), which has foaming ability at high temperatures and acts as a protective layer during a fire. However, there have been no studies carried out to investigate the synergy between these two materials. Therefore, two different ratios, namely 1/1 and 1/2 of LigW/LG, were used to prepare bioPUR foam composites. The obtained bioPUR foam composites with a 1/2 ratio of LigW/LG exhibited inhibition of flame propagation during the ignitability test by 7 s, increased thermal stability at higher temperatures by 40 °C, reduced total smoke production by 17%, reduced carbon monoxide release by 22%, and increased compressive strength by a maximum of 123% and 36% and tensile strength by a maximum of 49% and 30% at 100 °C and 200 °C, respectively, compared to bioPUR foam composites with unmodified LigW. Additionally, thanks to the sufficient compatibility between the polymeric matrix and LigW/LG particles, bioPUR foam composites were characterised by unchanged or even improved physical and mechanical properties, as well as increased glass transition temperature by 16% compared to bioPUR foam composites with unmodified LigW particles, making them suitable for application as a thermal insulating layer in building envelopes.

Colloidal Phenol-Amine Coating on Implants for Improved Anti-Inflammation and Osteogenesis

Phenol-amine coatings have attracted significant attention in recent years owing to their adjustable composition and multifaceted biological functionalities. The current preparation of phenol-amine coatings, however, involves a chemical reaction within the solution or interface, resulting in lengthy preparation times and necessitating specific reaction conditions, such as alkaline environments and oxygen presence. The facile, rapid, and eco-friendly preparation of phenol-amine coatings under mild conditions continues to pose a challenge. In this study, we use a macromolecular phenol-amine, Tanfloc, to form a stable colloid under neutral conditions, which was then rapidly adsorbed on the titanium surface by electrostatic action and then spread and fused to form a continuous coating within several minutes. This nonchemical preparation process was rapid, mild, and free of chemical additives. The in vitro and in vivo results showed that the Tanfloc colloid fusion coating inhibited destructive inflammation, promoted osteogenesis, and enhanced osteointegration. These remarkable advantages of the colloidal phenol-amine fusion coating highlight the suitability of its future application in clinical practice.

Influence of Dilution on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Polyurethane-Cement Based Composite Surface Coating

Polyurethane-cement composite are widely used in modern civil engineering, and the method of adding diluent is often used to adjust the construction process to adapt to the engineering environment. Studies have shown that the addition of diluent impacts the performance of polyurethane-cement based composite surface coatings, but there have been few reports on the influence of diluent content on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the coatings. To address this, polyurethane coatings with different diluent contents were prepared, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was used to test the microstructure of the coatings. The tensile strength and elongation at rupture were tested using a universal material testing machine, and the fracture interface morphology of each coating was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Finally, the correlation between the microstructure parameters and the mechanical properties of the coating was analyzed using grey relation theory. The results demonstrated that with the increase in diluent content, (i) the average radius of the free volume hole (R) and the free volume fraction (FV) of the coating both showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing. The value of R was between 3.04 and 3.24 Å, and the value of FV was between 2.08 and 2.84%. (ii) The tensile strength of the coating increased first and then decreased, while the elongation at rupture decreased first and then increased. Among them, the value of tensile strength was between 3.23 and 4.02 MPa, and the value of elongation at fracture was between 49.34 and 63.04%. In addition, the free volume in polymers plays a crucial role in facilitating the migration of molecular chain segments and is closely related to the macroscopic mechanical properties of polymers. A correlation analysis showed that the R value of the coating had the greatest influence on its tensile strength, while FV showed a higher correlation with the elongation at rupture.

Large-Area Soluble Covalent Organic Framework Oligomer Coating for Organic Solution Nanofiltration Membranes

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a family of engaging membrane materials for molecular separation, which remain challenging to fabricate in the form of thin-film composite membranes due to slow crystal growth and insoluble powder. Here, an additive approach is presented to construct COF-based thin-film composite membranes in 10 min via COF oligomer coating onto poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK）ultrafiltration membranes. By the virtue of ultra-thin liquid phase and liquid-solid interface-confined assembly, the COF oligomers are fast stacked up and grow along the interface with the solvent evaporation. Benefiting from the low out-plane resistance of COFs, COF@PEEK composite membranes exhibit high solvent permeances in a negative correlation with solvent viscosity. The well-defined pore structures enable high molecular sieving ability (Mw = 300 g mol-1 ). Besides, the COF@PEEK composite membranes possess excellent mechanical integrities and steadily operate for over 150 h in the condition of high-pressure cross flow. This work not only exemplifies the high-efficiency and scale-up preparation of COF-based thin-film composite membranes but also provides a new strategy for COF membrane processing.

Antifungal edible coatings for fruits based on zein and chitosan nanowhiskers

Fresh produce have a more limited shelf life than processed ones. Their sensory attributes such as appearance and surface texture are important features in consumer perception and liking. The decomposition of fresh produce, which is caused by enzymes, chemical reactions, and microbial infections, often caused by Colletotrichum species, is inevitable. However, it can be slowed down. Several materials have been developed for this purpose, with an emphasis on active coatings using nanomaterials. In this study, the protective effects of a zein coating containing chitosan nanowhiskers (CSW) for the maintenance of fruit quality were investigated using guava (Psidium guajava L.) as a model fruit. CSW were previously characterized, and their antifungal effects against distinct Colletotrichum species (Colletotrichum asianum, Colletotrichum tropicale, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Colletotrichum brevisporum) were proven. Coatings were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, optical profilometry, and mechanical properties. Total soluble solids, pH, mass loss, and visual inspection of uncoated and coated guava fruits were also verified during 9 days. Results show that CSW length and aspect ratio decreased for longer extraction times. A similar behavior was found for x-ray diffraction in which peak intensity decreases under the same conditions. CSW degradation (ca. 250-400°C) also depends on extraction time in which more crystalline whiskers are the most thermally stable ones. The addition of CSW did not significantly (p < 0.05) modify the homogeneity and continuity of coating but prevented microbial growth assuring fruit quality during storage. In summary, coatings protected guava fruits from post-harvest spoilage while preserving quality and extending shelf life. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables have a more limited shelf life than processed ones.

Research progress of absorbable stents

Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammation of blood vessel walls, is a progressive pathophysiological process characterized by lipid deposition and innate adaptive immune responses. Arteriosclerosis often leads to narrowing of blood vessels. At present, interventional stent therapy is the main treatment method for vascular stenosis, which has the advantages of less trauma, less risk and faster recovery. However, atherosclerosis occurs in a complex pathophysiological environment. Stenting inevitably causes local tissue damage, leading to complications such as inflammation, intimal hyperplasia, late thrombosis, stent restenosis and other complications. It is urgent to optimize interventional therapy program. This article summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of absorbable metal scaffolds and the research progress of absorbable polymer scaffolds. The optimization strategy of stent is proposed. The status quo of drug coating was summarized. The prospect of new stent. To improve the therapeutic effect of arteriosclerosis.

Optimized and Scalable Precoating-Free Reprogramming of Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells into iPSCs

Human disease modeling has been profoundly transformed by the introduction of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), marking the onset of a new era. This ground-breaking development offers a tailored framework for generating pluripotent cells from any individual, effectively enabling the development of cellular models for the study of human physiology and diseases on an unprecedented scale. Although technologies for iPSCs generation have advanced rapidly over the past two decades, protocols for reprogramming patient-derived somatic cells into stem cells still pose a major challenge for the development of automated pipelines capable of generating iPSCs at scales that are cost-effective, reproducible, and easy to implement. Most methods commonly rely on extracellular matrix protein mixtures or synthetic substrates to promote efficient proliferation of iPSCs. Nonetheless, employing these substances entails a laborious and time-consuming process, as the culture surface requires coating treatments before cell seeding. Here we describe a method for reprogramming blood-derived mononucleated cells that eliminates the need to precoat culture surfaces for the entire experimental flow. This procedure is suitable for fresh or frozen purified peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and allows seeding of reprogrammed cells in a culture medium containing a fragment of laminin-511, regardless of the method of reprogramming employed. Our protocol incorporates a streamlined workflow that optimizes key factors, including cell density, culture medium composition, and iPSC culture propagation techniques. Using a precoating-free approach, we eliminate the time-consuming steps, while our optimized subcloning method improves the scalability of the protocol, making it suitable for large-scale applications. Additionally, the automation-friendly nature of our protocol allows for high-throughput processing, reducing the labor and costs associated with manual handling. © 2024 The Authors. Robust and Transparent Silver Oxide Coating Fabricated at Room Temperature Kills Clostridioides difficile Spores, MRSA, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Antimicrobial coatings can inhibit the transmission of infectious diseases when they provide a quick kill that is achieved long after the coating application. Here, we describe the fabrication and testing of a glass coating containing Ag2O microparticles that was prepared from sodium silicate at room temperature. The half-lives of both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa on this coating are only 2-4 min. The half-life of Clostridioides difficile spores is about 9-12 min, which is extremely short for a spore. Additional tests on MRSA demonstrate that the coating retains its antimicrobial activity after abrasion and that an increased loading of Ag2O leads to a shorter half-life. This coating combines the properties of optical transparency, robustness, fast kill, and room temperature preparation that are highly desirable for an antimicrobial coating.

The Role of APTES as a Primer for Polystyrene Coated AA2024-T3

(3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) silane possesses one terminal amine group and three ethoxy groups extending from each silicon atom, acting as a crucial interface between organic and inorganic materials. In this study, after APTES was deposited on the aluminum alloy AA2024-T3 as a primer for an optional top coating with polystyrene (PS), its role with regard to stability as a protection layer and interaction with the topcoat were studied via combinatorial experimentation. The aluminum alloy samples primed with APTES under various durations of concentrated vapor deposition (20, 40, or 60 min) with an optional post heat treatment and/or PS topcoat were comparatively characterized via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and surface energy. The samples top-coated with PS on an APTES layer primed for 40 min with a post heat treatment revealed excellent performance regarding corrosion impedance. A primed APTES surface with higher surface energy accounted for this higher corrosion impedance. Based on the SEM images and the surface energy calculated from the measured contact angles on the APTES-primed surfaces, four mechanisms are suggested to explain that the good protection performance of the APTES/PS coating system can be attributed to the enhanced wettability of PS on the cured APTES primer with higher surface energy. The results also suggest that, in the early stages of exposure to the corrosion solution, a thinner APTES primer (deposited for 20 min) enhances protection against corrosion, which can be attributed to the hydrolytic stability and hydrolyzation/condensation of the soaked APTES and the dissolution of the naturally formed aluminum oxide pre-existing in the bare samples. An APTES primer subjected to additional heat treatment will increase the impedance of the coating system significantly. APTES, and silanes, in general, used as adherent agents or surface modifiers, have a wide range of potential applications in micro devices, as projected in the Discussion section.

Additive-Derived Surface Modification of Cathodes in All-Solid-State Batteries: The Effect of Lithium Difluorophosphate- and Lithium Difluoro(oxalato)borate-Derived Coating Layers

Sulfide-based electrolytes, with their high conductivity and formability, enable the construction of high-performance, all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). However, the instability of the cathode-sulfide electrolyte interface limits the commercialization of these ASSBs. Surface modification of cathodes using the coating technique has been explored as an efficient approach to stabilize these interfaces. In this study, the additives lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) are used to fabricate stable cathode coatings via heat treatment. The low melting points of LiDFP and LiDFOB enable the formation of thin and uniform coating layers by a low-temperature heat treatment. All-solid-state cells containing LiDFP- and LiDFOB-coated cathodes show electrochemical performances significantly better than those comprising uncoated cathodes. Among all of the as-prepared coated cathodes, LiDFP-coated cathodes fabricated using a slightly lower temperature than the phase-transition temperature of LiDFP (320 °C) show the best discharge capacity, rate capability, and cyclic performance. Furthermore, cells comprising LiDFP-coated cathodes showed significantly low impedance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirm the effectiveness of the LiDFP coating. LiDFP-coated cathodes minimized side-reactions during cycling, resulting in a significantly low cathode-surface degradation. Hence, this study highlights the efficiency of the proposed coating method and its potential to facilitate the commercialization of ASSBs. Overall, this study reports an effective technique to stabilize the cathode-electrolyte interface in sulfide-based ASSBs, which could expedite the practical implementation of these advanced energy-storage devices.

Antimicrobial Cu-Doped TiO2 Coatings on the β Ti-30Nb-5Mo Alloy by Micro-Arc Oxidation

Among the different surface modification techniques, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is explored for its ability to enhance the surface properties of Ti alloys by creating a controlled and durable oxide layer. The incorporation of Cu ions during the MAO process introduces additional functionalities to the surface, offering improved corrosion resistance and antimicrobial activity. In this study, the β-metastable Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy was oxidated through the MAO method to create a Cu-doped TiO2 coating. The quantity of Cu ions in the electrolyte was changed (1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 mMol) to develop coatings with different Cu concentrations. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, contact angle, and Vickers microhardness techniques were applied to characterize the deposited coatings. Cu incorporation increased the antimicrobial activity of the coatings, inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria strains, and Candida albicans fungus by approximately 44%, 37%, 19%, and 41%, respectively. Meanwhile, the presence of Cu did not inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli. The hardness of all the deposited coatings was between 4 and 5 GPa. All the coatings were non-cytotoxic for adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSC), promoting approximately 90% of cell growth and not affecting the AMSC differentiation into the osteogenic lineage.

Thermal Contact Response of a Transversely Isotropic Magneto-Electro-Elastic Coating

The magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) medium is a typical intelligent material with promising application prospects in sensors and transducers, whose thermal contact response is responsible for their sensitivity and stability. An effective thermal contact model between a moving sphere and a coated MEE medium with transverse isotropy is established via a semi-analytical method (SAM) to explore its thermal contact response. First, a group of frequency response functions for the magneto-electro-thermo-elastic field of a coated medium are derived, assuming that the coating is perfectly bonded to the substrate. Then, with the aid of the discrete convolution-fast Fourier transform algorithm and conjugate gradient method, the contact pressure and heat flux can be determined. Subsequently, the induced elastic, thermal, electric and magnetic fields in the coating and substrate can be obtained via influence coefficients relating the induced field and external loads. With the proposed method, parametric studies on the influence of the sliding velocity and coating property are conducted to investigate the thermal contact behavior and resulting field responses of the MEE material. The sliding velocity and thermal properties of the coating have a significant effect on the thermal contact response of the MEE material; the coupled multi-field response can be controlled by changing the coating thickness between ~0.1 a0 and a0.

The Influence of Nitrogen Flow on the Stoichiometric Composition, Structure, Mechanical, and Microtribological Properties of TiN Coatings

Utilizing reactive DC magnetron sputtering method, TiN coatings were deposited on the silicon substrates at different nitrogen flows and powers. A study of the X-ray phase composition of the coatings was carried out. The stoichiometric composition of the coatings was determined using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The structure of the surface, cross-section, and thickness of the coatings were determined using scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A significant change in the surface structure of TiN coatings was established with changes in deposition power and nitrogen flow. SEM images of cross-sections of all coated samples showed that the formation of coatings occurs in the form of a columnar structure with a perpendicular orientation relative to the silicon substrate. The mechanical properties (elastic modulus E and microhardness H) of TiN coatings of the first group demonstrate a maximum at a nitrogen flow of 3 sccm and are 184 ± 11 GPa and 15.7 ± 1.3 GPa, respectively. In the second group, the values of E and H increase due to a decrease in the size of the structural elements of the coating (grains and crystallites). In the third group, E and H decrease. Microtribological tests were carried out in 4 stages: at a constant load, multi-cycle for 10 and 100 cycles, and with increasing load. The coefficient of friction (CoF) and specific volumetric wear ω depend on the roughness, topology, and mechanical properties of the resulting coatings. Fracture toughness was determined using nanoscratch and depends on the mechanical properties of TiN coatings. Within each group, coatings with the best mechanical and microtribological properties were described: in the first group-TiN coating at 3 sccm (with (29.6 ± 0.1) at.% N), in the second group-TiN coating at 2 sccm (with (40.8 ± 0.2) at.% N), and in the third group-TiN coating at 1 sccm (c (37.3 ± 0.2) at.% N).

Microstructure and Wear Behavior of Ti-xFe-SiC In Situ Composite Ceramic Coatings on TC4 Substrate from Laser Cladding

Titanium alloys are widely used in various structural materials due to their lightweight properties. However, the low wear resistance causes significant economic losses every year. Therefore, it is necessary to implement wear-resistant protection on the surface of titanium alloys. In this study, four types of in situ composite ceramic coatings with two-layer gradient structures were prepared on a Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) substrate using laser cladding. In order to reduce the dilution rate, a transition layer (Ti-40SiC (vol.%)) was first prepared on TC4 alloy. Then, a high-volume-fraction in situ composite ceramic working layer (Ti-xFe-80SiC (vol.%)) with different contents of Fe-based alloy powder (x = 0, 5, 10 and 15 vol.%) was prepared. The working surface of Ti-40SiC (TL) exhibited a typical XRD pattern of Ti, TiC, Ti5Si3, and Ti3SiC2. In comparison, both Ti-80SiC (WL-F0) and Ti-5Fe-80SiC (WL-F5) exhibited similar phase compositions to the TL coating, with no new phase identified in the coatings. However, the TiFeSi2 and SiC phases were presented in Ti-10Fe-80SiC (WL-F10) and Ti-15Fe-80SiC (WL-F15). It is proven that the addition of the Fe element could regulate the in situ reaction in the original Ti-Si-C ternary system to form the new phases with high hardness and good wear resistance. The hardness of the WL-F15 (1842.9 HV1) is five times higher than that of the matrix (350 HV1). Due to the existence of self-lubricating phases such as Ti5Si3 and Ti3SiC2, a lubricating film was presented in the WL-F0 and WL-F5 coatings, which could block the further damage of the friction pair and enhance the wear resistance. Furthermore, a wear-transition phenomenon was observed in the WL-F10 and WL-F15 coatings, which was similar to the friction behavior of structural ceramics. Under the load of 10 N and 20 N, the wear volume of WL-F15 coating is 5.2% and 63.7% of that in the substrate, and the depth of friction of WL-15 coating is only 14.4% and 80% of that in the substrate. The transition of wear volume and depth can be attributed to the wear mechanism changing from oxidation wear to adhesive wear.
