Prospects of Plant Derived Bioactive Compounds as Nanoparticles for Biotechnological Applications

Nanoparticles bestow beneficial impacts on plants, specifically in increasing photosynthetic capacity and germination rate, pesticide delivery, managing pathogenicity and enhancing nutrient supply. The nanoparticles produced from the medicinal plant extracts are identified as an exceptional applicant in nanomedicine, cosmetics, and agriculture for the treatment of diseases as antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer agents, etc. Plant extracts actually have bioactive metabolites that provide therapeutic potential against a variety of diseases. Herein, we review the production of bioactive compounds from leaves, roots, seeds, flowers and stems. We further summarize the different methods for obtaining plant extracts and the green technologies for the synthesis of nanoparticles of plant derived bioactive compounds. Biotechnological aspects of these synthesized nanoparticles are also added here as highlights of this review. Overall, plant derived nanoparticles provide an alternative to conventional approaches for drug delivery as well and present exciting opportunities for future research on novel areas.

Facile green synthesis of a novel NiO and its catalytic effect on methylene blue photocatalytic reduction and sodium borohydride hydrolysis

NiO nanoparticles were synthesized from pine cone extract by green synthesis method, which is a simple, cost-effective, environmentally friendly and sustainable method. The particle size of NiO nanoparticles was determined to be in the range of 10-25 nm by X-diffraction differential and transmission electron microscope analysis, and the bandgap energy of NiO nanoparticles was determined to be 2.66 eV. The catalytic effect of NiO nanoparticles in both microwave-assisted sodium borohydride hydrolysis and photocatalytic reduction of methylene blue was examined and it was determined that they had a high catalytic effect in both applications. It was determined that the hydrogen production rate in sodium borohydride hydrolysis was 1135 mL/g/min. The activation energy of sodium borohydride hydrolysis is 29.69 kJ/mol and 29.59 kJ/mol for the nth-order and Langmuir Hinshelwood kinetic models, respectively. In the photocatalytic reduction of methylene blue with NaBH4, it was determined that the reduction did not occur in the absence of a catalyst, but in the presence of the catalyst, the reduction occurred 98% in 3 min. It was determined that NiO nanoparticles were used five times in the photocatalytic reduction of methylene blue and the reduction efficiency for the fifth time was 93%. It was determined that the photocatalytic reduction of methylene blue was pseudo-first order and the rate constant was 1.63 s-1. It was determined that NiO nanoparticles synthesized by the environmentally friendly green synthesis method can be used as catalysts for two different applications.

Green Synthesis of Ceria Nanoparticles from Cassava Tubers for Electrochemical Aptasensor Detection of SARS-CoV-2 on a Screen-Printed Carbon Electrode

Green synthesis approaches for making nanosized ceria using starch from cassava as template molecules to control the particle size are reported. The results of the green synthesis of ceria with an optimum calcination temperature of 800 °C shows a size distribution of each particle of less than 30 nm with an average size of 9.68 nm, while the ratio of Ce3+ to Ce4+ was 25.6%. The green-synthesized nanoceria are applied to increase the sensitivity and attach biomolecules to the electrode surface of the electrochemical aptasensor system for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The response of the aptasensor to the receptor binding domain of the virus was determined with the potassium ferricyanide redox system. The screen-printed carbon electrode that has been modified with green-synthesized nanoceria shows 1.43 times higher conductivity than the bare electrode, while those modified with commercial ceria increase only 1.18 times. Using an optimized parameter for preparing the aptasensors, the detection and quantification limits were 1.94 and 5.87 ng·mL-1, and the accuracy and precision values were 98.5 and 89.1%. These results show that green-synthesized ceria could be a promising approach for fabricating an electrochemical aptasensor.

Green-Synthesized Amino Carbons for Impedimetric Biosensing of E. coli O157:H7

This study describes the synthesis of amino-functionalized carbon nanoparticles derived from biopolymer chitosan using green synthesis and its application toward ultrasensitive electrochemical immunosensor of highly virulent Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7). The inherent advantage of high surface-to-volume ratio and enhanced rate transfer kinetics of nanoparticles is leveraged to push the limit of detection (LOD), without compromising on the selectivity. The prepared carbon nanoparticles were systematically characterized by employing CO2-thermal programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-visible), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The estimated limit of detection of 0.74 CFU/mL and a sensitivity of 5.7 ((ΔRct/Rct)/(CFU/mL))/cm2 in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) affirm the utility of the sensor. The proposed biosensor displayed remarkable selectivity against interfering species, making it well suited for real-time applications. Moreover, the chitosan-derived semiconducting amino-functionalized carbon shows excellent sensitivity in a comparative analysis compared to highly conducting amine-functionalized carbon synthesized via chemical modification, demonstrating its vast potential as an E. coli sensor.

Development of phytosterol-loaded silver nanoparticles for ameliorating haemorrhoidal complications via the AMPK pathway-a mechanistic approach

The aim of the current study was to synthesize silver nanoparticles (PLSNPs) using green technology by means of phytosterol-enriched fractions fromBlumea laceraextracts (EAF) and evaluate their toxicological and anti-haemorrhoidal potential. The average size of the synthesized particles was found to be 85.64 nm by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive spectroscopy showed the elemental composition of PLSNPs to be 12.59% carbon and 87.41% silver, indicating the capping of phytochemicals on the PLSNPs. The PLSNPs were also standardized for total phytosterol content using chemical methods and high-perfromance liquid chromatography. The PLSNPs were found to be safe up to 1000 mg kg-1as no toxicity was observed in the acute and sub-acute toxicity studies performed as per OECD guidelines. After the induction of haemorrhoids, experimental animals were treated with different doses of EAF, PLSNPs and a standard drug (Pilex) for 7 d, and on the eighth day the ameliorative potential was assessed by evaluating the haemorrhoidal (inflammatory severity index, recto-anal coefficient) and biochemical (tumour necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6) parameters and histology of the recto-anal tissue. The results showed that treatment with PLSNPs and Pilex significantly (p< 0.05) reduced haemorrhoidal and biochemical parameters. This was further supported by restoration of altered antioxidant status. Further, a marked reduction in the inflammatory zones along with minimal dilated blood vessels was observed in the histopathological study. The results of molecular docking studies also confirmed the amelioration of haemorrhoids via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-mediated reduction of inflammation and endothelin B receptor modification by PLSNPs. In conclusion, PLSNPs could be a good alternative for the management of haemorrhoids.

An Eco-friendly Approach to ZnO NP Synthesis Using Citrus reticulata Blanco Peel/Extract: Characterization and Antibacterial and Photocatalytic Activity

Emission of greenhouse gases and infectious diseases caused by improper agro-waste disposal has gained significant attention in recent years. To overcome these hurdles, agro-waste can be valorized into valuable bioactive compounds that act as reducing or stabilizing agents in the synthesis of nanomaterials. Herein, we report a simple circular approach using Citrus reticulata Blanco (C. reticulata) waste (peel powder/aqueous extract) as green reducing and capping/stabilizing agents and Zn nitrate/acetate precursors to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with efficient antimicrobial and photocatalytic activities. The obtained NPs crystallized in a hexagonal wurtzite structure and differed clearly in their morphology. UV-vis analysis of the nanoparticles showed a characteristic broad absorption band between 330 and 414 nm belonging to ZnO NPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of ZnO NPs exhibited a Zn-O band close to 450 cm-1. The band gap values were in the range of 2.84-3.14 eV depending on the precursor and agent used. The crystallite size obtained from size-strain plots from measured XRD patterns was between 7 and 26 nm, with strain between 16 and 4%. The highly crystalline nature of obtained ZnO NPs was confirmed by clear ring diffraction patterns and d-spacing values of the observed lattice fringes. ZnNPeelMan_400 and ZnNExtrMan showed good stability, as the zeta potential was found to be around -20 mV, and reduced particle aggregation. Photoluminescence analysis revealed different defects belonging to oxygen vacancies (VO+ and VO+2) and zinc interstitial (Zni) sites. The presence of oxygen vacancies on the surface of ZnAcExtrMan_400 and ZnAcPeelMan_400 increased antimicrobial activity, specifically against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis). ZnNExtrMan with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.156 mg/mL was more effective against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), revealing a high influence of particle size and shape on antimicrobial activity. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO NPs was examined by assessing the degradation of acid green dye in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation. ZnAcPeelMan_400 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity (94%) within 90 min after irradiation compared to other obtained ZnO NPs.

Biosynthesis and antibacterial activity of ZnO nanoparticles usingBuchanania obovatafruit extract and the eutectic-based ionic liquid

The fruit extract ofBuchanania obovataand the eutectic-based ionic liquid were utilized, in an eco-friendly, inexpensive, simple method, for synthesizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The influence of the reducing, capping and stabilizing agents, in both mediums, on the structure, optical, and morphological properties of ZnO NPs was extensively investigated. The surface plasmon resonance peaks were observed at 340 nm and 320 nm for the fruit-based and the eutectic-based ionic liquid mediums, respectively, indicating the formation of ZnO NPs. XRD results confirmed the wurtzite structure of the ZnO NPs, exhibiting hexagonal phases in the diffraction patterns. The SEM and TEM images display that the biosynthesized ZnO NPs exhibit crystalline and hexagonal shape, with an average size of 40 nm for the fruit-based and 25 nm for the eutectic-based ionic liquid. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, revealed a value ∼13 m2g-1for ZnO NPs synthesized using the fruit extract and ∼29 m2g-1for those synthesized using the eutectic-based ionic liquid. The antibacterial activity of the biosynthesized ZnO NPs was assessed against clinically isolated Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacterial strains using the inhibition zone method. The ZnO NPs produced from the eutectic-based ionic liquids confirmed superior antibacterial activity against bothS. aureusandE. colicompared to those mediated by the utilized fruit extract. At a concentration of 1000, the eutectic-based ionic liquid mediated ZnO NPs displayed a maximum inhibition zone of 16 mm againstS. aureus, while againstE. coli, a maximum inhibition zone of 15 mm was observed using the fruit extract mediated ZnO NPs. The results of this study showed that the biosynthesized ZnO NPs can be utilized as an efficient substitute to the frequently used chemical drugs and covering drug resistance matters resulted from continual usage of chemical drugs by users.

Green synthesized Cu-doped CeO2nanoparticles for Congo red dye adsorption and antibacterial action

The removal of pollutants from water bodies is crucial for the well-being of humanity and is a topic of global research. Researchers have turned their attention to green synthesized nanoparticles for wastewater treatment due to their eco-friendly nature, biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness. This work demonstrates the efficient removal of organic dye and both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria from water bodies using copper-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized withMurraya Koenigiiextract. Characterized via various methods, the 15% copper doped cerium oxide nanoparticles (Cu 15% NPs) exhibited maximum Congo red dye adsorption (98% degradation in 35 min). Kinetic analysis favoured a pseudo-second-order model, indicating the chemical nature of adsorption. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms aligned with the Langmuir model, indicating homogenous monolayer dye adsorption on the doped adsorbent. The maximum uptake of adsorbate,Qmobtained from Langmuir model for Cu 15% NPs was 193 mg g-1. The study also showed enhanced antibacterial activity againstBacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosafor Cu-doped ceria, attributed to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by the redox cycling between Ce3+and Ce4+. This substantiated that the green synthesized copper doped cerium oxide nanoparticles are potential candidates for adsorptive removal of Congo red dye and as antibacterial agents.

Green Synthesis of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Based on a Novel Thiophene-Derivative for Electrochemical Sensing

An environmentally friendly and sustainable approach was adopted to produce a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) via electropolymerization, with remarkable electrochemical sensing properties, tested in tyrosine (tyr) detection. The 2,2'-bis(2,2'-bithiophene-5-yl)-3,3'-bithianaphtene (BT2-T4) was chosen as functional monomer and MIP electrosynthesis was carried out via cyclic voltammetry on low-volume (20 μL) screen-printed carbon electrodes (C-SPE) in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ((BMIM) TFSI). An easy and rapid washing treatment allowed us to obtain the resulting MIP film, directly used for tyr electrochemical detection, carried out amperometrically. The sensor showed a linear response in the concentration range of 15-200 μM, with LOD of 1.04 µM, LOQ of 3.17 μM and good performance in selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. Tyrosine amperometric detection was also carried out in human plasma, resulting in a satisfactory recovery estimation. The work represents the first use of BT2-T4 as a functional monomer for the production of a molecularly imprinted polymer, with a green approach afforded by using a few microliters of a room temperature ionic liquid as an alternative to common organic solvents on screen-printed carbon electrodes, resulting in a valuable system that meets the green chemistry guidelines, which is today an essential criterion in both research and application field.

Gold Nanoparticles (AuNPs)-Toxicity, Safety and Green Synthesis: A Critical Review

In recent years, the extensive exploration of Gold Nanoparticles (AuNPs) has captivated the scientific community due to their versatile applications across various industries. With sizes typically ranging from 1 to 100 nm, AuNPs have emerged as promising entities for innovative technologies. This article comprehensively reviews recent advancements in AuNPs research, encompassing synthesis methodologies, diverse applications, and crucial insights into their toxicological profiles. Synthesis techniques for AuNPs span physical, chemical, and biological routes, focusing on eco-friendly "green synthesis" approaches. A critical examination of physical and chemical methods reveals their limitations, including high costs and the potential toxicity associated with using chemicals. Moreover, this article investigates the biosafety implications of AuNPs, shedding light on their potential toxic effects on cellular, tissue, and organ levels. By synthesizing key findings, this review underscores the pressing need for a thorough understanding of AuNPs toxicities, providing essential insights for safety assessment and advancing green toxicology principles.

Highly Stable Self-Cleaning Paints Based on Waste-Valorized PNC-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles

Adding photocatalytically active TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) to polymeric paints is a feasible route toward self-cleaning coatings. While paint modification by TiO2-NPs may improve photoactivity, it may also cause polymer degradation and release of toxic volatile organic compounds. To counterbalance adverse effects, a synthesis method for nonmetal (P, N, and C)-doped TiO2-NPs is introduced, based purely on waste valorization. PNC-doped TiO2-NP characterization by vibrational and photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, diffraction, and thermal analysis suggests that TiO2-NPs were modified with phosphate (P=O), imine species (R=N-R), and carbon, which also hindered the anatase/rutile phase transformation, even upon 700 °C calcination. When added to water-based paints, PNC-doped TiO2-NPs achieved 96% removal of surface-adsorbed pollutants under natural sunlight or UV, paralleled by stability of the paint formulation, as confirmed by micro-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) surface analysis. The origin of the photoinduced self-cleaning properties was rationalized by three-dimensional (3D) and synchronous photoluminescence spectroscopy, indicating that the dopants led to 7.3 times stronger inhibition of photoinduced e-/h+ recombination when compared to a benchmark P25 photocatalyst.

Nanoremediation and Antioxidant Potential of Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Leucena's Leaves, Stem, and Fruits

Synthetic dyes are persistent organic environmental pollutants that can cause extensive damage to living beings and to the ecosystem as a whole. Cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient strategies to deal with this type of pollution are necessary as it commonly resists conventional water treatment methods. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using the aqueous extract from the leaves, stem, and fruits of Leucaena leucocephala (Leucena) were produced and characterized through UV-vis, TEM, EDS, SDL, XPS, XRD, and zeta potential, and they proved to be able to promote adsorption to remediate methylene blue and tartrazine pollution in water. The nanoremediation was performed and did not require direct exposure to sunlight or any special lamp or a specific reduction agent. The AgNPs produced using the extract from the leaves exhibited the best performance in nanoremediation and also presented antioxidant activity that surpassed the one from butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Consequently, it is an interesting nanotool to use in dye nanoremediation and/or as an antioxidant nanostructure.

Solid-State Synthesis of Liquorice-Stabilized Copper-Based Nanoparticles: Structural and Catalytic Studies

A large-scale quantity of copper oxalate nanoparticles were successfully obtained via a facile and green solid-state chemical reaction. Copper oxalate nanoparticles were obtained by ball-milling between copper chloride, Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), and ascorbic acid at ambient conditions. The size and morphology of copper oxalate nanoparticles powder were studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The prepared nanoparticles were semi-spherical in shape and ranged from 5 to 15 nm in size. UV/Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were carried out to characterize the prepared samples. Copper oxalate nanoparticles were evaluated as a catalyst in the catalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol, bromophenol blue, reactive yellow, and a mixture of the three pollutants. The present study combined solid-state reaction and green requirements for the mass production of nanomaterials. The proposed reaction is performed in simple steps, inexpensive, low energy consuming, solvent-free, and minimizes the emission of secondary wastes.

Green Synthesis and Biosafety Assessment of MXene

The rise of MXene-based materials with fascinating physical and chemical properties has attracted wide attention in the field of biomedicine, because it can be exploited to regulate a variety of biological processes. The biomedical applications of MXene are still in its infancy, nevertheless, the comprehensive evaluation of MXene's biosafety is desperately needed. In this review, the composition and the synthetic methods of MXene materials are first introduced from the view of biosafety. The evaluation of the interaction between MXene and cells, as well as the safety of different forms of MXene applied in vivo are then discussed. This review provides a basic understanding of MXene biosafety and may bring new inspirations to the future applications of MXene-based materials in biomedicine.

Antibacterial and phytotoxicological properties assessment of Momordica charantia extract-based ZnO nanoparticles

BACKGROUND

Utilizing the fruit extract of bitter melon (Momordica charantia), zinc nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized through a green approach, a novel endeavor in current literature. The primary objective was to evaluate the phytotoxic and growth-promoting effects of these ZnO-NPs on wheat, chosen as a test plant. Structural characterization using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed the hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure of ZnO-NPs and identified spherical M. charantia-produced (MC)-ZnO-NPs ranging in size from 48 to 150 nm.

RESULTS

At a concentration of 2000 mg L-1 , both MC- and raw-ZnO-NPs augmented wheat germination percentages. Furthermore, raw-ZnO-NPs at 4000 mg L-1 demonstrated the highest chlorophyll content. Despite the plant's increased accumulation of MC-ZnO-NPs, no statistically significant toxic effects were observed. The antibacterial efficacy of ZnO-NPs was assessed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. MC-ZnO-NPs exhibited a 67.9% inhibition zone against Escherichia coli at 0.04 mg L-1 , while raw-ZnO-NPs exhibited 75.6% inhibition at the same concentration.

CONCLUSION

The study suggests that ZnO-NPs synthesized from M. charantia exhibit both growth-promoting effects on wheat without significant phytotoxicity and potent antibacterial properties, particularly against Escherichia coli. However, further investigations are warranted to comprehensively understand the interactions between ZnO-NPs and plants. Future research should focus on M. charantia, exploring its enhanced effects on plant growth, development and antibacterial attributes. These findings hold promise for potential agricultural applications, emphasizing the need for detailed phytotoxicological assessments of ZnO-NPs. © 2023 The Authors. Long-Lasting Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized with Tagetes erecta and Their Antibacterial Activity against Erwinia amylovora, a Serious Rosaceous Pathogen

A rapid, eco-friendly, and simple method for the synthesis of long-lasting (2 years) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is reported using aqueous leaf and petal extracts of Tagetes erecta L. The particles were characterized using UV-Visible spectrophotometry and the analytical and crystallographic techniques of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The longevity of the AgNPs was studied using UV-Vis and high-resolution TEM. The antibacterial activity of the particles against Erwinia amylovora was evaluated using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. The results were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (p ≤ 0.05). Both the leaf and petal extracts produced AgNPs, but the leaf extract (1 mL) was long-lasting and quasi-spherical (17.64 ± 8.87 nm), with an absorbance of UV-Vis λmax 433 and a crystalline structure (fcc, 111). Phenols, flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids which are associated with -OH, C=O, and C=C were identified in the extracts and could act as reducing and stabilizing agents. The best antibacterial activity was obtained with a nanoparticle concentration of 50 mg AgNPs L-1. The main contribution of the present research is to present a sustainable method for producing nanoparticles which are stable for 2 years and with antibacterial activity against E. amylovora, one of most threatening pathogens to pear and apple productions.

Rapid, Massive, and Green Synthesis of Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks to Fabricate POMOF/PAN Nanofiber Membranes for Selective Filtration of Cationic Dyes

Developing high-efficiency membrane materials for the rapid removal of organic dyes is crucial but remains a challenge. Polyoxometalates (POMs) clusters with anionic structures are promising candidates for the removal of cationic dyes via electrostatic interactions. However, their shortcomings, such as their solubility and inability to be mass-produced, hinder their application in water pollution treatment. Here, we propose a simple and green strategy utilizing the room temperature stirring method to mass produce nanoscale polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs) with porous rhomboid-shaped dodecahedral and hexagonal prism structures. The products were labeled as POMOF1 (POMOF-PW12) and POMOF2 (POMOF-PMo12). Subsequently, a series of x wt% POMOF1/PAN (x = 0, 3, 5, and 10) nanofiber membranes (NFMs) were prepared using electrospinning technology, where polyacrylonitrile (PAN) acts as a "glue" molecule facilitating the bonding of POMOF1 nanoparticles. The as-prepared samples were comprehensively characterized and exhibited obvious water stability, as well as rapid selective adsorption filtration performance towards cationic dyes. The 5 wt% POMOF1/PAN NFM possessed the highest removal efficiency of 96.7% for RhB, 95.8% for MB, and 86.4% for CV dyes, which realized the selective separation over 95% of positively charged dyes from the mixed solution. The adsorption mechanism was explained using FT-IR, SEM, Zeta potential, and adsorption kinetics model, which proved that separation was determined via electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. Moreover, the POMOF1/PAN membrane presented an outstanding recoverable and stable removal rate after four cycles. This study provides a new direction for the systematic design and manufacture of membrane separation materials with outstanding properties for contaminant removal.

A Study on the Antibacterial, Antispasmodic, Antipyretic, and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of ZnO Nanoparticles Using Leaf Extract from Jasminum sambac (L. Aiton)

The green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using plants has grown in significance in recent years. ZnO NPs were synthesized in this work via a chemical precipitation method with Jasminum sambac (JS) leaf extract serving as a capping agent. These NPs were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, and DTA. The results from UV-vis and FT-IR confirmed the band gap energies (3.37 eV and 3.50 eV) and the presence of the following functional groups: CN, OH, C=O, and NH. A spherical structure and an average grain size of 26 nm were confirmed via XRD. The size and surface morphology of the ZnO NPs were confirmed through the use of SEM analysis. According to the TEM images, the ZnO NPs had an average mean size of 26 nm and were spherical in shape. The TGA curve indicated that the weight loss starts at 100 °C, rising to 900 °C, as a result of the evaporation of water molecules. An exothermic peak was seen during the DTA analysis at 480 °C. Effective antibacterial activity was found at 7.32 ± 0.44 mm in Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus) and at 15.54 ± 0.031 mm in Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria against the ZnO NPs. Antispasmodic activity: the 0.3 mL/mL sample solution demonstrated significant reductions in stimulant effects induced by histamine (at a concentration of 1 µg/mL) by (78.19%), acetylcholine (at a concentration of 1 µM) by (67.57%), and nicotine (at a concentration of 2 µg/mL) by (84.35%). The antipyretic activity was identified using the specific Shodhan vidhi method, and their anti-inflammatory properties were effectively evaluated with a denaturation test. A 0.3 mL/mL sample solution demonstrated significant reductions in stimulant effects induced by histamine (at a concentration of 1 µg/mL) by 78.19%, acetylcholine (at a concentration of 1 µM) by 67.57%, and nicotine (at a concentration of 2 µg/mL) by 84.35%. These results underscore the sample solution's potential as an effective therapeutic agent, showcasing its notable antispasmodic activity. Among the administered doses, the 150 mg/kg sample dose exhibited the most potent antipyretic effects. The anti-inflammatory activity of the synthesized NPs showed a remarkable inhibition percentage of (97.14 ± 0.005) at higher concentrations (250 µg/mL). Furthermore, a cytotoxic effect was noted when the biologically synthesized ZnO NPs were introduced to treated cells.

Green synthesis of silver and iron nano composites using aqueous extract of zanthoxylum armatum seeds and their application for removal of acid black 234 dye

Green nanotechnology has gained attraction in recent years due to the growing awareness of the environmental and health risks associated with traditional methods of nanomaterial synthesis. In the present study, nanocomposite (NCs) of silver and Iron were prepared using Zanthoxylum Armatum seeds aqueous extract which acts as a reducing, stabilizing, and capping agent. The synthesized NCs were characterized using UV/Vis Spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and EDX. The UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis of the NCs revealed the presence of a surface plasmonic resonance band occurring at 420 nm. Examination of the NCs through SEM demonstrated that they exhibited a nearly spherical morphology, with an average particle diameter measuring 54.8 nm. The crystalline nature of these NCs was verified through X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the calculation of crystallite size using the Scherrer-Debye equation yielded a value of 12.6 nm. The adsorption ability of newly synthesized nanocomposites was investigated against Acid Black 234 Dye. The results showed that a 0.5 g of NCs dose at pH 4 removed 99.3% of 10 mg/L of Acid Black 234 Dye within 60 min. Based on the findings of this research, it can be inferred that the that Ag-Fe NCs synthesized from Zanthoxylum Armatum seeds aqueous extract hold significant potential for addressing environmental pollution caused by Acid Black 234 Dye. The NCs were used as adsorbent for the removal of Acid Black 234 dye from the wastewater sample and showed 98% removal of dye from the commercial sample within 60 min. In this context, the research highlights that the environmentally friendly synthesis of Ag-Fe nanocrystals (Ag-Fe NCs) using Zanthoxylum Armatum as a mediator offers an efficient and cost-effective solution for mitigating environmental pollution.

Synthesis of Pseudostellaria heterophylla polysaccharide-gold nanocomposites and their antitumor effect through immunomodulation

Polysaccharides from natural sources have an excellent immune function and low toxicity; however, their limitations such as short half-life and instability limit their sustained pharmacological activity. In this context, the combination of polysaccharides and nanotechnology have been developed to promote the stability and prolong the immune activities of polysaccharides. To synthesize and explore the antitumor effect and immunomodulatory activity of PHP-AuNPs. Polysaccharides extracted from Pseudostellaria heterophylla were used to synthesize gold nanocomposites (PHP-AuNPs), and their physicochemical properties and immunoregulatory effect in vitro and in vivo were analyzed. The PHP-AuNPs were green synthesized with high biosafety. PHP-AuNPs can activate macrophages in vitro and decrease the tumor weight and volume, whereas they increase the immune organ index in vivo. Besides, PHP-AuNPs showed a beneficial effect for maintaining the immune balance of CD4+ /CD8+ T cells and modulating the release of cytokines such as TNF-α increase and IL-10 decrease in mice. All these results suggested that PHP-AuNPs exhibit a remarkable antitumor effect and stronger immunomodulatory activity than that of free PHP-1. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The P. heterophylla polysaccharide-gold nanocomposites (PHP-AuNPs) were synthesized and physicochemical properties were characterized. The cytotoxicity in vitro and immunomodulatory effects of PHP-AuNPs on macrophages were analyzed. The immune-antitumor effects in vivo of PHP-AuNPs have also been confirmed.

Evaluation of Free Radical Scavenging and Antimicrobial Activity of Coleus amboinicus-Mediated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Background In this research, iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using Coleus amboinicus stem extract, which is used for various diseases such as throat infection, cough, fever, nasal congestion, and digestive problems.  Aim This study aimed to formulate a green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles mediated by Coleus amboinicus (known as karpuravalli in Tamil) and assess its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.  Materials and methods Iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized, and then their antimicrobial properties were tested against two specific pathogens, i.e., Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, using the agar well diffusion technique. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging (H2O2) assay, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay were conducted to check the free radical scavenging activity.  Result The results obtained showed that these iron oxide nanoparticles showed better antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans when compared to Candida albicans, and the antioxidant activity showed a very close efficacy when compared to the standard.  Conclusion The research has demonstrated the high antioxidant activity and high antibacterial activity of iron oxide nanoparticles using Coleus amboinicus stem, a natural and cheaper antimicrobial drug compared to the drugs present on the market.

Herbal-Based Green Synthesis of TB-ZnO-TiO(II) Nanoparticles Composite From Terminalia bellirica: Characterization, Toxicity Assay, Antioxidant Assay, and Antimicrobial Activity

Background Terminalia bellirica leaf extract was used as an herbal to get an aqueous extract of Tb-ZnO-TiO2 (zinc and titanium dioxide) nanoparticles composite, and this was subsequently subjected to an analysis of its antioxidant properties and possible antimicrobial activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Employing the 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and hydrogen peroxide assay techniques for antioxidant properties. In addition to their biocompatibility, rapid biodegradability, and low toxicity, herbal-based nanoparticles (Tb-ZnO-TiO2 NPs composite) synthesized by T. bellirica have drawn a lot of interest as promising options for administering drugs and effective antimicrobial applications. Materials and methods The form and dimensions of the dispersion of the synthesized nanoparticles were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and UV-visible for particle characterization. Nanoparticles were analyzed for antimicrobial activity using the well diffusion method. Ascorbic acid and vitamin E were used as two separate controls for antioxidant assay with different concentrations, and also toxicity assay was done by using zebrafish embryos. Results Tb-ZnO-TiO2 NPs composite were obtained as a powder, the X-beam diffraction (XRD) result revealed a small quantity of impurities and revealed that the structure was spherical in nature. A unique absorption peak for Tb-ZnO-TiO2 NPs composite may be seen in UV-Vis spectroscopy which is in the region of 260 to 320 nm. The Tb-ZnO-TiO2 NPs composite antibacterial efficacy was evaluated and showed noted antibacterial activity and free radical scavenging activity with less toxicity. Conclusion The results demonstrated the Tb-ZnO-TiO2 NPs composite has strong antioxidant qualities and enormous antibacterial activity obtained from T. bellirica extract. Therefore, the Tb-ZnO-TiO2 NPs composite synthesized nanoparticles can be used in biomedical applications as an effective antioxidant and antibacterial reagent.

Comparative Bioactivity Analysis of Green-Synthesized Metal (Cobalt, Copper, and Selenium) Nanoparticles

Aim This study involves synthesizing metal nanoparticles (NPs) via the green synthesis method using Millettia pinnata leaf, Acacia auriculiformis bark, and Citrus sinensis peel and comparatively evaluating their antibacterial activity in vitro through the analysis of cobalt oxide NPs (CoNPs), copper NPs (CuNPs), and selenium NPs (SeNPs). This research contributes to eco-friendly approaches for producing functional nanomaterials with potential applications in medicine and environmental remediation. Materials and methods The metal NPs were synthesized using M. pinnata leaf, A. auriculiformis bark, and C. sinensis peel. These leaf extracts act as self-reducing and stabilizing agents. The antibacterial activity was assessed by the well diffusion method. Cultures of pathogenic bacteria species such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were prepared. NPs were applied to the culture, and zones of inhibition (ZOIs) were measured. The data were statistically analyzed to compare the antibacterial efficacy of the different NPs. Results The successfully synthesized CoNPs, CuNPs, and SeNPs showed distinctive phytochemical properties. CoNPs exhibited the highest ZOI against most bacterial strains, with CuNPs and SeNPs following. CoNPs consistently showed superior performance compared to CuNPs and SeNPs. Conclusion Our study analyzed the bioactivity of metal NPs produced using green synthesis with plant extracts. CoNPs have shown superior antibacterial effectiveness against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria when compared to CuNPs and SeNPs. This may be due to their larger surface area, smaller size, unique electrical, magnetic, and catalytic properties, as well as their improved contact with the bacterial cell wall and membrane.

Green Synthesis of Selenium Nanoparticles From Clove and Their Toxicity Effect and Anti-angiogenic, Antibacterial and Antioxidant Potential

Introduction  Nanoparticles, owing to their minuscule size, have become pivotal in diverse scientific endeavors, presenting unique characteristics with applications spanning medicine to environmental science. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) exhibit potential in diverse biomedical uses. Aim This research investigates the potential anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties of SeNPs, which are synthesized using the green synthesis method. This eco-friendly approach aligns with sustainable practices and utilizes clove extract (Syzygium aromaticum). Materials and methods Clove extract facilitates SeNP synthesis via sodium selenite reduction. The characterization methods comprised Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Assessments covered antioxidant properties, chorioallantoic membrane assay (CAM) assay for antiangiogenic effects, toxicity evaluation, and antibacterial assays. Results Successful synthesis of SeNPs was verified by a UV-visible absorption peak at 256 nm and FTIR peaks around 3500-500 cm -1, and the spherical morphology was confirmed by SEM analysis with EDAX, which indicated the presence of SeNPs and their unique properties. Phytochemical substances are active chemicals that contribute to the properties of SeNPs. The SeNPs exhibited antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 0.437 µg/mL and antibacterial properties against bacterial pathogen Salmonella species, with a zone of inhibition measuring 19 mm. The CAM assay demonstrated possible antiangiogenic actions, and toxicity testing on Artemia nauplii showed biocompatibility. Conclusion This study underscores the efficient synthesis of SeNPs using clove extract, emphasizing their potential applications. The notable properties of SeNPs emphasize their promise for diverse biomedical and environmental uses.

Evaluation of biological potential of UV-spectrophotometric, SEM, FTIR, and EDS observed Punica granatum and Plectranthus rugosus extract-coated silver nanoparticles: A comparative study

Recent developments in the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) using phytoconstituents have attracted the attention of the global scientific community. The present study was designed to synthesize silver NPs (AgNPs) using Punica granatum and Plectranthus rugosus plant extracts. The fabricated AgNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The shift in the color of the silver nitrate (AgNO3 ) solution after the addition of P. granatum and P. rugosus extracts indicated the synthesis of AgNPs. The effect of AgNO3 concentrations and pH on the synthesis of AgNPs was also evaluated. The findings of this study suggest that AgNO3 concentration of 1 mM, reaction time of 1 h, and pH of 7 at room temperature were the best suited conditions for the synthesis of AgNPs. According to the FTIR analysis, amidic and carbonyl compounds were primarily responsible for the encapsulation of AgNPs. SEM investigations have shown irregularly shaped geometry with sizes of 35 nm (P. granatum) and 33 nm (P. rugosus) with low agglomeration. The prepared AgNPs exhibited good potential for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging, with values of 70% (P. granatum) and 68% (P. rugosus). Hence, we conclude that the leaves of P. granatum and P. rugosus are excellent material for designing of different plant-extracted-conjugated AgNPs for biomedical applications. In Situ Preparation of Dehydrodieugenol-Loaded Silver Nanoparticles and their Antischistosomal Activity

Schistosomiasis is a major neglected disease that imposes a substantial worldwide health burden, affecting approximately 250 million people globally. As praziquantel is the only available drug to treat schistosomiasis, there is a critical need to identify new anthelmintic compounds, particularly from natural sources. To enhance the activity of different natural products, one potential avenue involves its combination with silver nanoparticles (AgNP). Based on this approach, a one-step green method for the in situ preparation of dehydrodieugenol (DHDG) by oxidation coupling reaction using silver and natural eugenol is presented. AgNP formation was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy due to the appearance of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 430 nm which is characteristic of silver nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were spherical with sizes in the range of 40 to 50 nm. Bioassays demonstrated that the silver nanoparticles loaded with DHDG exhibited significant anthelmintic activity against Schistosoma mansoni adult worms without toxicity to mammalian cells and an in vivo animal model (Caenorhabditis elegans), contributing to the development of new prototypes based on natural products for the treatment of schistosomiasis.

Facile One-Pot Synthesis and Anti-Microbial Activity of Novel 1,4-Dihydropyridine Derivatives in Aqueous Micellar Solution under Microwave Irradiation

The current study describes a novel and eco-conscious method to synthesize 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives utilizing an aqueous micellar solution containing aluminum dodecyl sulfate, Al(DS)3, using readily available starting material. The final products were synthesized with excellent yields within remarkably quick reaction durations, promoting remarkable atom economy and minimizing environmental impacts. The present protocol has several advantages over other methodologies in terms of high yield (up to 97%) with excellent purity. Further, the synthesized 1,4-DHPs exhibit favorable to excellent resistance against examined bacterial and fungal species. Intriguingly, polar groups on the phenyl ring (5b, 5c, 5i and 5j) make the 1,4-DHPs equally potent against the microbes as compared to the standard drugs.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles from Euphorbia milii plant extract for enhanced antibacterial and enzyme inhibition effects

Objectives

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are gaining increasing attention in biomedical applications due to their unique properties. Green synthesis methods are environmentally friendly and have demonstrated potential for AgNP production. This study explores the green synthesis of AgNPs using the methanolic extract of Euphorbia milii, a plant known for its medicinal properties. The primary objectives of this research were to synthesize AgNPs using E. milii extract, characterize the nanoparticles (NPs) using various techniques, and evaluate their antibacterial and enzyme inhibitory activities.

Methods

E. milii plant extract was utilized for the green synthesis of AgNPs. The characterization of the NPs was performed through ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Antibacterial activity was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus, while enzyme inhibitory assays were conducted against urease, α-glucosidase, carbonic anhydrase II, and xanthine oxidase.

Results

The synthesized AgNPs exhibited significant antibacterial effects, with a remarkable 20-mm zone of inhibition against S. aureus, surpassing the efficacy of the plant extract alone. Furthermore, the AgNPs demonstrated remarkable enzyme inhibition, achieving impressive percentages of 77.98% against α-glucosidase and 88.54% against carbonic anhydrase II. Half-maximal inhibitory concentration values for enzyme inhibition were highly promising, including 78.09 ± 1.98 μM for α-glucosidase, 0.22 ± 0.10 μM for carbonic anhydrase II, and 7.11 ± 0.55 μM for xanthine oxidase.

Conclusion

In this study, AgNPs were successfully synthesized using E. milii extract and characterized using various techniques. The AgNPs exhibited significant antibacterial and enzyme-inhibitory activities, showcasing their potential for biomedical applications.

Green Synthesis of Selenium Nanoparticles using Green Coffee Beans: An Optimization Study

In this study, ultrasonication extraction of some bioactive compounds from green coffee beans was optimized with the response surface method using Box-Behnken experimental design. The best condition was selected as 90.90 W ultrasonic power, 33.63 min sonication time and 30 % solid concentration. The responses obtained under optimum conditions had TPC, DPPH and CUPRAC values identified as 6603.33±2025.94 ppm GAE, 9638.31±372.17 ppm TE and 98.83 mmol, respectively. Microwave-assisted selenium nanoparticle production was carried out using the extract obtained under optimized conditions. The produced selenium nanoparticles showed absorbance between 350-400 nm. The surface morphology and size of the nanoparticles were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and spherical nanoparticles of about 100 nm were produced. Functional groups affecting the reduction were determined by FTIR analysis. In addition, the produced selenium nanoparticles had amorphous (non-uniform) structure and could maintain their stability at high temperatures.

Synthesis of PEDOT/CNTs Thermoelectric Thin Films with a High Power Factor

In this study, we have improved the power factor of conductive polymer nanocomposites by combining layer-by-layer assembly with electrochemical deposition to produce flexible thermoelectric materials based on PEDOT/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-films. To produce films based on CNTs and PEDOT, a dual approach has been employed: (i) the layer-by-layer method has been utilized for constructing the CNTs layer and (ii) electrochemical polymerization has been used in the synthesis of the conducting polymer. Moreover, the thermoelectric properties were optimized by controlling the experimental conditions including the number of deposition cycles and electropolymerizing time. The electrical characterization of the samples was carried out by measuring the Seebeck voltage produced under a small temperature difference and by measuring the electrical conductivity using the four-point probe method. The resulting values of the Seebeck coefficient S and σ were used to determine the power factor. The structural and morphological analyses of CNTs/PEDOT samples were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The best power factor achieved was 131.1 (μWm-1K-2), a competitive value comparable to some inorganic thermoelectric materials. Since the synthesis of the CNT/PEDOT layers is rather simple and the ingredients used are relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly, the proposed nanocomposites are a very interesting approach as an application for recycling heat waste.

Padina boergesenii mediated synthesis of Se-ZnO bimetallic nanoparticles for effective anticancer activity

Introduction

Evaluating the anticancer property of Padina boergesenii mediated bimetallic nanoparticles.

Methods

The present study focuses on synthesizing Se-ZnO bimetallic nanoparticles from an aqueous algal extract of brown algae Padina boergesenii.Synthesized Se-ZnO NPs were characterized by UV, FTIR, SEM-EDS and HRTEM for confirmation along with the anticancer activity by MTT assay.

Results

The UV gave an absorbance peak at 342 and 370 nm, and the FTIR showed functional groups involved in synthesizing Se-ZnO NPs. The TEM micrographs indicated the crystalline nature and confirmed the size of the Se-ZnO NPs to be at an average size of 26.14 nm. Anticancer efficacy against the MCF-7 breast and HepG2 (hepatoblastoma) cell lines were also demonstrated, attaining an IC50 value of 67.9 µg and 74.9 µg/ml respectively, which caused 50% cell death.

Discussion

This work aims to highlight an effective method for delivering bioactive compounds extracted from brown algae and emphasize its future therapeutic prospects. The potential of Selenium-Zinc oxide nanoparticles is of great interest due to the biocompatibility and low toxicity aspects of selenium combined with the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of zinc metal. The presence of bioactive compounds contributed to the stability of the nanoparticles and acted as capping properties.

Facile cost-effective green synthesis of carbon dots: selective detection of biologically relevant metal ions and synergetic efficiency for treatment of cancer

A facile cost-effective green synthesis approach has been used to synthesize carbon-dot (CDs) from the Kernel part of theAzadirachta Indicaseeds and investigated their fluorescent and metal ions sensing capability and also used for the delivery of drugs. Metallic ions such as Ca2+, K+, Na+, Fe3+,and Zn2+which are biologically important for many reactions and are selectively detected through the novel CDs. The resultant dot size of CDs (∼4 nm) is useful to eliminate the 'Achilles heel' problems, which is associated with the Zn2+in the body and its detection is a very challenging task. It is found that the sensitivity of CDs for the detection of Zn2+can be regulated by using different solvents. These CDs can also be used as a sensing probe for the selective detection of Fe3+at a very low concentration of solution (∼5 μM). The synthesis method of CDs reported here is cost-effective, very fast and it is highly selective towards Fe3+and Zn2+. Due to the fast response capability of these CDs, logic gate operation is achieved and it provides a new understanding to construct potential next-generation molecular devices for the detection of different biomolecules with high selectivity. Additionally, these CDs are biocompatible against normal healthy cells, capable of loading small biomolecules and drugs due to their porous nature, and exhibited potential impact for breast cancer therapy. It is observed that a significant synergic therapeutic effect of CDs loaded with doxorubicin against breast cancer cells is very promising. Thus, the CDs reported herein in this work have been synthesized through a green synthesis approach and can be used as a molecular probe for the detection of metal ions as well as for drug delivery applications.

Diamino-Substituted Quinones as Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

This study introduces a sustainable approach to designing organic cathode materials (OCMs) for lithium-ion batteries as a potential replacement for traditional metal-based electrodes. Utilizing green synthetic methodologies, we synthesized and characterized five distinct quinone derivatives and investigated their electrochemical attributes within Li-ion battery architectures. Notably, the observed specific capacities were lower than the theoretical predictions, suggesting limitations in achieving efficient redox reactions in a coin-cell configuration. Among the quinone derivatives studied, one variant derived from natural vanillin showed superior cycle stability, maintaining 58% capacity retention over 95 charge-discharge cycles, and achieving a Coulombic efficiency of 90%. Importantly, we discovered that the commonly used Super-P conductive carbon did not yield any measurable battery performance; instead, these quinones necessitated the incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets as the conductive matrix. Through a facile one-step synthesis in ethanol or water, we have demonstrated a viable synthetic route for producing OCMs, albeit with moderate performances, which have attempted to address common concerns of high solubility and poor redox reactivity of previous OCMs, thereby offering a sustainable pathway for the development of organic-based energy storage devices.

Rapid, sensitive, inexpensive, portable and reliable devices are needed for diagnosis related to drug exposure, treatment, and prognosis of diseases. Electrochemical sensors are useful for drug monitoring due to their high sensitivity and fast response time. Also, they can be combined with portable signal read-out devices for point-of-care applications. In recent years, nanomaterials such as carbon-based, carbon-metal nanocomposites, noble nanomaterials have been widely used to modify electrode surfaces due to their outstanding features including catalytic abilities, conductivity, chemical stability, biocompatibility for development of electrochemical sensors. This review paper presents the most recent advances about nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors including the use of green assessment approach for detection of drugs including anticancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotics covering the period from 2019 to 2023. The sensor characteristics such as analyte interactions, fabrication, sensitivity, and selectivity are also discussed. In addition, the current challenges and potential future directions of the field are highlighted.

Biosynthesis, Characterization, and Biomedical Applications of Gold Nanoparticles with Cucurbita moschata Duchesne Ex Poiret Peel Aqueous Extracts

In this study, AuNPs were biosynthesized from Cucurbita moschata fruit peel extracts. Biosynthesized AuNPs exhibited maximum absorbance at a 555 nm wavelength, and XRD analysis indicated that the CM-AuNPs had a particle size of less than 100 nm and a cubic crystal structure. TEM scans revealed that the gold particles exhibited a spherical morphology, with an average size of 18.10 nm. FTIR analysis revealed strong peaks indicating the presence of functional groups involved in the reduction reactions. The surface charge of the biosynthesized AuNPs was determined to be -19.7 mV. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of AuNPs against pathogen strains were assessed by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. The cytotoxic effects of CM-AuNPs on cancer cell lines (Sk-Ov-3, CaCo2, and A549) and healthy cell lines (HUVEC) were investigated using the MTT method. The findings indicated that AuNPs biosynthesized by the green synthesis method using C. moschata peel aqueous extract had high inhibition on the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and effective cytotoxic activity against cancerous cell lines at low doses. As a result, it can be concluded that CM-AuNPs will be eminently effective in the production of antibacterial and/or anticancer drugs in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries.

Synthesis of Bioactive Nickel Nanoparticles Using Bacterial Strains from an Antarctic Consortium

Marine microorganisms have been demonstrated to be an important source for bioactive molecules. In this paper we report the synthesis of Ni nanoparticles (NiSNPs) used as reducing and capping agents for five bacterial strains isolated from an Antarctic marine consortium: Marinomonas sp. ef1, Rhodococcus sp. ef1, Pseudomonas sp. ef1, Brevundimonas sp. ef1, and Bacillus sp. ef1. The NiSNPs were characterized by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. The maximum absorbances in the UV-Vis spectra were in the range of 374 nm to 422 nm, corresponding to the Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Nickel. DLS revealed NiSNPs with sizes between 40 and 45 nm. All NiSNPs were polycrystalline with a face-centered cubic lattice, as revealed by XRD analyses. The NiSNPs zeta potential values were highly negative. TEM analysis showed that the NiSNPs were either spherical or rod shaped, well segregated, and with a size between 20 and 50 nm. The FTIR spectra revealed peaks of amino acid and protein binding to the NiSNPs. Finally, all the NiSNPs possess significant antimicrobial activity, which may play an important role in the management of infectious diseases affecting human health.

Anticandidal effectiveness of greenly synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles against candidal pathogens

Drug resistance of pathogenic candidal strains to conventional antifungal agents represents a significant health issue contributing to high morbidity worldwide. Hence, the aim of the current study focused on evaluating the antifungal and synergistic activities of the green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles formulated using Laurus nobilis leaf extract. The biogenic ZnONPs were hexagonal in shape with average particle size diameter of 37.98 nm and pure crystalline structure as detected by XRD data. The highest antifungal activity of biogenic ZnONPs was detected against Candida parapsilosis strain demonstrating relative inhibitory zone diameters of 17.13 ± 0.74 and 25.78 ± 0.47 mm, at the concentrations of 100 and 200 µg/disk, respectively. Moreover, the biogenic ZnONPs demonstrated the highest synergistic activity with clotrimazole antifungal agent against Candida glabrata followed by Candida auris strains. MTT assay revealed that the biogenic ZnONPs showed low toxicity demonstrating relative IC50 value of 774.45 µg/mL against normal lung fibroblast cells which further affirmed their biosafety for application. In conclusion, the bioinspired ZnONPs could be utilized for the formulation of effective antifungal agents against drug resistant candidal strains and also could be combined with antifungal agents to boost their antifungal efficiency.

Synthesis of Sustainable Lignin Precursors for Hierarchical Porous Carbons and Their Efficient Performance in Energy Storage Applications

Lignin-derived porous carbons have great potential for energy storage applications. However, their traditional synthesis requires highly corrosive activating agents in order to produce porous structures. In this work, an environmentally friendly and unique method has been developed for preparing lignin-based 3D spherical porous carbons (LSPCs). Dropwise injection of a lignin solution containing PVA sacrificial templates into liquid nitrogen produces tiny spheres that are lyophilized and carbonized to produce LSPCs. Most of the synthesized samples possess excellent specific surface areas (426.6-790.5 m2/g) along with hierarchical micro- and mesoporous morphologies. When tested in supercapacitor applications, LSPC-28 demonstrates a superior specific capacitance of 102.3 F/g at 0.5 A/g, excellent rate capability with 70.3% capacitance retention at 20 A/g, and a commendable energy density of 2.1 Wh/kg at 250 W/kg. These materials (LSPC-46) also show promising performance as an anode material in sodium-ion batteries with high reversible capacity (110 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1), high Coulombic efficiency, and excellent cycling stability. This novel and green technique is anticipated to facilitate the scalability of lignin-based porous carbons and open a range of research opportunities for energy storage applications.

The Brown Sugar Mediated Carbon Quantum Dots as a Novel Fluorescence Sensor for Sensitive Detection of Gentamicin and Its Application in Foods

In this work, a novel fluorescence sensing strategy was proposed for the detection of gentamicin based on fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Herein, the CQDs were green-synthesized for the first time via a one-step hydrothermal method utilizing brown sugar as the precursor. In the presence of citrate-stabilized AuNPs, the fluorescence of CQDs was quenched efficiently. Gentamicin, on the other hand, had a higher affinity for AuNPs and was able to compete with CQDs for a preferential binding to AuNPs, which ultimately led to the aggregation of AuNPs and freeing of CQDs in solution, causing the fluorescence recovery of CQDs. Based on the above phenomenon, the concentrations of gentamicin could be ascertained by detecting the variations in fluorescence intensity of CQDs. This sensing strategy exhibited excellent selectivity in various antibiotics. At the same time, the method displayed outstanding sensitivity for gentamicin, which was successfully applied to real samples detection.

Critical Evaluation of Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles-Kaempferol for Antibacterial Activity Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Introduction

This study aimed to characterize silver nanoparticles-kaempferol (AgNP-K) and its antibacterial activities against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Green synthesis method was used to synthesize AgNP-K under the influence of temperature and different ratios of silver nitrate (AgNO3 and kaempferol).

Methods

AgNP-K 1:1 was synthesized with 1 mM kaempferol, whereas AgNP-K 1:2 with 2 mM kaempferol. The characterization of AgNP-K 1:1 and AgNP-K 1:2 was performed using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Zetasizer, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The antibacterial activities of five samples (AgNP-K 1:1, AgNP-K 1:2, commercial AgNPs, kaempferol, and vancomycin) at different concentrations (1.25, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/mL) against MRSA were determined via disc diffusion assay (DDA), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assay, and time-kill assay.

Results

The presence of a dark brown colour in the solution indicated the formation of AgNP-K. The UV-visible absorption spectrum of the synthesized AgNP-K exhibited a broad peak at 447 nm. TEM, Zetasizer, and SEM-EDX results showed that the morphology and size of AgNP-K were nearly spherical in shape with 16.963 ± 6.0465 nm in size. XRD analysis confirmed that AgNP-K had a crystalline phase structure, while FTIR showed the absence of (-OH) group, indicating that kaempferol was successfully incorporated with silver. In DDA analysis, AgNP-K showed the largest inhibition zone (16.67 ± 1.19 mm) against MRSA as compared to kaempferol and commercial AgNPs. The MIC and MBC values for AgNP-K against MRSA were 1.25 and 2.50 mg/mL, respectively. The time-kill assay results showed that AgNP-K displayed bacteriostatic activity against MRSA. AgNP-K exhibited better antibacterial activity against MRSA when compared to commercial AgNPs or kaempferol alone.

Advancements in biosurfactant production using agro-industrial waste for industrial and environmental applications

The adverse effects of waste generation on the environment and public health have raised global concerns. The utilization of waste as a raw material to develop products with enhanced value has opened up novel prospects for promoting environmental sustainability. Biosurfactants obtained from agro-industrial waste are noteworthy due to their sustainability and environmental friendliness. Microorganisms have been employed to generate biosurfactants as secondary metabolites by making use of waste streams. The utilization of garbage as a substrate significantly reduces the expenses associated with the process. Furthermore, apart from reducing waste and offering alternatives to artificial surfactants, they are extensively employed in bioremediation, food processing, agriculture, and various other industrial pursuits. Bioremediation of heavy metals and other metallic pollutants mitigated through the use of bacteria that produce biosurfactants which has been the more recent research area with the aim of improving its quality and environmental safety. Moreover, the production of biosurfactants utilizing agricultural waste as a raw material aligns with the principles of waste minimization, environmental sustainability, and the circular economy. This review primarily focuses on the production process and various types of biosurfactants obtained from waste biomass and feedstocks. The subsequent discourse entails the production of biosurfactants derived from various waste streams, specifically agro-industrial waste.

Green Synthesis of Narrow-Size Silver Nanoparticles Using Ginkgo biloba Leaves: Condition Optimization, Characterization, and Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Activities

Natural products derived from medicinal plants offer convenience and therapeutic potential and have inspired the development of antimicrobial agents. Thus, it is worth exploring the combination of nanotechnology and natural products. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized from the leaf extract of Ginkgo biloba (Gb), having abundant flavonoid compounds. The reaction conditions and the colloidal stability were assessed using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the AgNPs. AgNPs exhibited a spherical morphology, uniform dispersion, and diameter ranging from ~8 to 9 nm. The FTIR data indicated that phytoconstituents, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and terpenoids, could potentially serve as reducing and capping agents. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized AgNPs was assessed using broth dilution and agar well diffusion assays. The results demonstrate antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains at low AgNP concentrations. The cytotoxicity of AgNPs was examined in vitro using the CCK-8 method, which showed that low concentrations of AgNPs are noncytotoxic to normal cells and promote cell growth. In conclusion, an environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing AgNPs from Gb leaves yielded antibacterial AgNPs with minimal toxicity, holding promise for future applications in the field of biomedicine.

Therapeutic evaluation of titanium dioxide nanoparticles based herbal dental varnish derived from rosemary and ginger extracts:A comprehensive investigation into anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

BACKGROUND

Titanium nanoparticles (NPs) offer promising applications in the treatment and prevention of inflammatory disorders due to their unique physicochemical characteristics. However, additional research is necessary to attain a thorough comprehension and validate the efficacy of this approach in dental practice.

OBJECTIVE

This study scrutinizes the anti-inflammatory properties of a dental varnish infused with ginger and rosemary extracts mediated by titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles.

METHODS

A herbal dental varnish was formulated by integrating ginger and rosemary extracts with titanium dioxide nanoparticles at concentrations of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 μL. Anti-inflammatory properties were assessed through Bovine Serum Albumin denaturation and membrane stabilization assays, comparing results with a control group.

RESULTS

The results reveal concentration-dependent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in the test group when compared to the control group. The BSA assay corroborates increased percent inhibition with rising titanium dioxide nanoparticle concentrations. In line with existing literature, titanium dioxide nanoparticles enhance dental material properties.

CONCLUSION

The bioactive compounds in ginger and rosemary, such as phenolic compounds and terpenes, contribute to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of the varnish. Additionally, the therapeutic potential of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in addressing inflammatory diseases underscores their significance in this formulation.

Novel anti-dandruff shampoo incorporated with ketoconazole-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles using green tea extract

BACKGROUND

Dandruff caused by Malassezia furfur is a prevailing fungal infection. Although ketoconazole (KTZ) is widely intended for anti-dandruff treatment, poor solubility, and epidermal permeability limits its use and the marketed KTZ shampoo adversely effects scalp and hair.

OBJECTIVE

To prepare a novel shampoo loaded with KTZ-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles using green tea extract and evaluate its antifungal activity.

METHODS

The KTZ-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles was prepared by green synthesis and was characterized by UV, FTIR, XRD, and the drug entrapment efficiency was investigated. The antifungal activity of the nanoparticles with respect to standard drug, KTZ was tested against Malassezia furfur. Further, a novel antidandruff shampoo was developed by incorporating the prepared nanoparticles into the shampoo base.

RESULTS

The formation of KTZ-coated ZnO nanoparticles was confirmed by UV and FTIR analysis. XRD analysis confirmed the amorphous phase of KTZ in nanoparticles. The drug entrapment efficiency was found to be 91.84%. The prepared nanoparticles showed enhanced activity against Malassezia furfur compared to drug of choice, KTZ (1%). The evaluation of shampoo showed an ideal result.

CONCLUSION

KTZ-coated ZnO nanoparticles loaded novel shampoo in comparison to marketed anti-dandruff shampoo could be an effective alternate for the treatment of dandruff.

Gold Nanoparticles in Parkinson's Disease Therapy: A Focus on Plant-Based Green Synthesis

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects approximately 1% of people over the age of 60 and 5% of those over the age of 85. Current drugs for Parkinson's disease mainly affect the symptoms and cannot stop its progression. Nanotechnology provides a solution to address some challenges in therapy, such as overcoming the blood-brain barrier (BBB), adverse pharmacokinetics, and the limited bioavailability of therapeutics. The reformulation of drugs into nanoparticles (NPs) can improve their biodistribution, protect them from degradation, reduce the required dose, and ensure target accumulation. Furthermore, appropriately designed nanoparticles enable the combination of diagnosis and therapy with a single nanoagent. In recent years, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been studied with increasing interest due to their intrinsic nanozyme activity. They can mimic the action of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase. The use of 13-nm gold nanoparticles (CNM-Au8®) in bicarbonate solution is being studied as a potential treatment for Parkinson's disease and other neurological illnesses. CNM-Au8® improves remyelination and motor functions in experimental animals. Among the many techniques for nanoparticle synthesis, green synthesis is increasingly used due to its simplicity and therapeutic potential. Green synthesis relies on natural and environmentally friendly materials, such as plant extracts, to reduce metal ions and form nanoparticles. Moreover, the presence of bioactive plant compounds on their surface increases the therapeutic potential of these nanoparticles. The present article reviews the possibilities of nanoparticles obtained by green synthesis to combine the therapeutic effects of plant components with gold.

Exploring the In Vitro Antidiabetic Potential of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Lemongrass and Mint Formulation

Aim This study aimed to compare the antidiabetic effect of metal oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs and ZnONPs) prepared using lemongrass and mint herbal formulations. Introduction The study explores green-synthesized nanoparticles for potential applications in diabetes management, emphasizing sustainable synthesis methods, particularly zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) produced from lemongrass and mint herbal formulations. The study was prompted by the increasing importance of innovative therapeutic strategies, responding to emerging health challenges, and leveraging advancements in nanotechnology and eco-friendly practices to explore the potential of green-synthesized nanoparticles in diabetes management. Methods The methods involve herbal formulation preparation, CuONPs and ZnONPs synthesis, and UV-visible spectrophotometry for characterization. In vitro antidiabetic activity is assessed through α-amylase and β-glucosidase enzyme assays using varied nanoparticle concentrations (10-50 µL). Results Visual observations confirm successful synthesis, with distinct color changes observed in both CuONPs and ZnONPs after 24 hours. UV-visible spectrophotometry reveals absorption peaks at 440 nm and 380 nm for CuONPs and ZnONPs, respectively. In the α-amylase assay, both nanoparticles exhibit concentration-dependent inhibition, with CuONPs ranging from 40% to 77% and ZnONPs ranging from 36% to 80%. The β-glucosidase assay demonstrates similar concentration-dependent inhibition patterns, highlighting significant differences. Conclusion The study concludes that CuONPs and ZnONPs synthesis using lemongrass and mint herbal formulations show concentration-dependent antidiabetic activity. The comparative analysis underscores the need for tailored approaches based on nanoparticle composition. These findings contribute valuable insights into the therapeutic potential of green-synthesized nanoparticles, paving the way for future nanomedicine research and development in diabetes management.

Biosynthesis of Zinc Nanoparticles From Actinobacterium Streptomyces Species and Their Biological Potential

BACKGROUND

In today's world, antibiotic-resistant microorganisms are a major concern. There is solid evidence that metal nanoparticles (NPs) tend to have antimicrobial properties. The most effective substitute for antibiotic resistance is the incorporation of metal NPs. The antibacterial properties of NPs are currently being explored and shown to be successful. Zinc (Zn) NPs that are biosynthesized from marine Actinobacterium proved to be more biocompatible, bioactive, and affordable.  Aim: This study aims to investigate the synthesis of ZnNPs from Actinobacterium Streptomyces species and their antimicrobial effects against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The current study uses natural, considerably safer processes to synthesize ZnNPs from marine Actinobacteria with little to no negative side effects. It involves sample collection, identification, and isolation of Actinobacterium Streptomyces species. The isolated sample was air-dried, and extracts of ZnNPs were taken. Among the isolates from marine sediment, two Actinobacteria that generate bioactive secondary metabolites-Streptomyces species (MOSEL-ME28) and Rhodococcus rhodochrous (MOSEL-ME29)-were selected for extracellular synthesis of ZnNPs. The antimicrobial activity of the biosynthesized ZnNPs from marine Actinobacteria was analyzed against Staphylococcus (MRSA), Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Streptococcus mutans. The results were statistically analyzed and graphs were created.

RESULTS

ZnNPs obtained from Actinobacterium Streptomyces species exhibited antimicrobial effects against Staphylococcus (MRSA), Klebsiella, and Streptococcus mutans. At 280 nm wavelength, analysis of the UV spectrum showed a notable absorbance value of 1.8. The antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus MRSA, Klebsiella species, and Streptococcus mutans was assessed by measuring the zone of inhibition in diameter. The zones of inhibition were 8, 8, and 7 mm on the evaluation for Streptococcus mutans, S. aureus, and Klebsiella species, respectively, at a dose of 75 μg/mL. When the dosage was increased to 100 μg/mL, the inhibition zones were found to be 9.5, 9, and 7.5 mm for the respective bacterial strains.

CONCLUSION

ZnNPs are biosynthesized from marine Actinobacterium Streptomyces species in this research study. They have a significant antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive and negative bacteria. This indicates that ZnNPs have enormous antimicrobial potential and have an extensive spectrum of applications. However, clinical trials must be completed before it can be used safely on patients.

Cytotoxicity and Characterization of Zinc Oxide and Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Ocimum tenuiflorum and Ocimum gratissimum Herbal Formulation

Background Toxicological assessments of nanoparticles are becoming more and more necessary due to the current rapid increase in interest in them for biomedical applications. This study aimed to synthesize and characterize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Ocimum tenuiflorum (black tulsi) and Ocimum gratissimum (African basil) herbal formulation extracts and to evaluate their cytotoxic effects. Methods The synthesis of AgNPs and ZnONPs was monitored using UV-visible spectra analysis at different time intervals. The nanoparticles' morphology and elemental composition were examined via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Furthermore, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra analysis was employed to identify the functional groups within the nanoparticles. The cytotoxic effects of the nanoparticles were evaluated using the brine shrimp lethality assay. Results The UV-visible spectra analysis revealed the successful synthesis of AgNPs and ZnONPs, with maximum absorption peaks observed at 430 nm and 380 nm, respectively. SEM images showed that AgNPs were spherical in shape and tended to agglomerate, while ZnONPs displayed a unique rod-like to short prism shape, and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of both silver and zinc in these nanoparticles, alongside other elements from the herbal extracts. FT-IR analysis indicated the existence of diverse functional groups on the nanoparticles' surfaces. The brine shrimp lethality assay results demonstrated a concentration-dependent cytotoxic effect of the nanoparticles. Conclusion The study successfully synthesized and characterized AgNPs and ZnONPs using Ocimum tenuiflorum and Ocimum gratissimum herbal formulation extracts. The nanoparticles exhibited significant cytotoxic effects, suggesting their potential applications in various fields. Our results highlight the need for a more discrete use of nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Further studies are needed to explore their potential uses and ensure their safe and effective application.

Antimicrobial Activity of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Ocimum Tenuiflorum and Ocimum Gratissimum Herbal Formulation Against Oral Pathogens

Background This study deals with the antimicrobial efficacy of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) synthesized through green methods employing extracts from Ocimum tenuiflorum and Ocimum gratissimum and assessed for their antimicrobial properties against a range of oral pathogens. Methods Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were synthesized using extracts from Ocimum tenuiflorum and Ocimum gratissimum through a green synthesis approach. Antimicrobial activity was determined using the agar-well diffusion assay to evaluate the consistency of inhibition zones against oral pathogens. Variations in sensitivity were assessed through the time-kill curve assay, quantifying the response of oral pathogens to zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) exposure over time. Results The agar-well diffusion assay revealed uniform 9-mm zones of inhibition against all oral pathogens, signifying consistent antimicrobial activity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). In the time-kill curve assay, Candida albicans exhibited the highest sensitivity, followed by Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. Enterococcus faecalis and Lactobacillus species displayed lower sensitivity, suggesting potential selectivity. Discussion The observed variation in sensitivity implies the potential selectivity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) against specific oral pathogens, which may have significant implications for oral health applications. These findings underscore the versatility of green-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) as promising antimicrobial agents, particularly for oral health applications. Conclusion This study provides promising results for the antimicrobial potential of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) synthesized using Ocimum tenuiflorum and Ocimum gratissimum. The consistent antimicrobial activity and variations in sensitivity among oral pathogens highlight their promising utility in oral health care.
