Knowledge, attitude, and practice toward herpes zoster (HZ) and HZ vaccination: Concept elicitation findings from a multi-country study in the Asia Pacific

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a prevalent disease characterized by a painful rash. A multi‑country study was conducted to elicit public and physician knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) toward HZ disease and vaccination for the assessment of local factors influencing HZ vaccine perceptions in four Asian-Pacific countries/territories One-to-one qualitative interviews were conducted in 2022, among the public (people aged ≥ 50 years, adults with parents aged ≥ 50 years, zoster vaccine live-vaccinated individuals aged ≥ 50 years in Republic of Korea, and HZ patients; n = 78) and physicians (general practitioners and specialists; n = 24). Themes surrounding KAP toward HZ and HZ vaccination were summarized using a thematic analysis. A substantial knowledge gap related to HZ was observed among the public, including its causes, long-term impacts, and the at-risk population. There was a low perceived risk of HZ and low general awareness of HZ vaccine availability, although country/territory-specific differences existed. Fear of HZ-associated pain contributed toward vaccination intent among HZ patients and adults with parents aged ≥ 50 years. HZ-naïve adults who were encouraged to receive the vaccine by others were not motivated to do so due to optimism bias. Physicians were perceived to be a reliable source of information. However, physicians did not always proactively discuss HZ vaccination due to time constraints and a perceived need to prioritize other vaccinations including influenza and pneumococcal vaccines. Initiatives are needed to improve public awareness of HZ and its complications, in terms of overall impact on individuals and society, and highlight the important role of physicians in recommending vaccination.

Awareness, knowledge, disease prevention practices, and immunization attitude of hepatitis E virus among food handlers in Klang Valley, Malaysia

Concern about the zoonotic Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is rising. Since, food handlers are at greater risk in contracting HEV, the present study aims to determine awareness, knowledge, prevention practices against HEV, and immunization attitudes. A cross sectional study was conducted among 400 food handlers in Klang Valley, Malaysia from December 2021 to March 2022. A structured questionnaire was employed for data collection and analysis with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 29. Approximately 4.5% of the respondents (18) reported having heard of HEV, while the median scores for the knowledge and practice domains were 0/10 and 1/5, respectively. A total of 316 (79%) respondents expressed willingness to obtain vaccination if made available. This study also found that those respondents who completed their tertiary education were significantly possessed better knowledge of the disease [odd ratio (OR) = 8.95, and 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.98-16.10]. Respondents with HEV awareness reported considerably better practices (OR = 8.24, 95% CI 1.72-39.63). Food handlers with one to five years of experience in the industry expressed notable willingness to take vaccination (OR = 7.71, 95% CI 1.79-33.18). Addressing poor HEV awareness and knowledge and poor practices against the disease is crucial in enlightening the policy makers about awareness among food handlers and general population. Nonetheless, a good immunization attitude, significant acceptance toward vaccination even with the vaccine being unavailable in Malaysia, and limited awareness of HEV highlight a promising development.

Respiratory syncytial virus knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions among adults in the United States

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality among older adults (aged ≥60 years) and adults with certain chronic conditions in the United States (US). Despite this burden, no previous studies have assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) of RSV among these populations. This study evaluates RSV-related KAP among US adults at increased risk of severe RSV infection. A cross-sectional, web-based survey was administered from May to June 2022 to better understand respiratory infection- and RSV-related KAP among US adults who are at risk of severe RSV infection. The survey included ≥200 adults in each of 4 subgroups: adults aged 60-89 years, and adults aged 18-59 years with ≥1 chronic cardiovascular condition, chronic pulmonary condition, or diabetes mellitus. Survey responses were analyzed descriptively overall and by subgroup, with exploratory logistic regression modeling used to evaluate characteristics associated with RSV awareness and concern. Among the 827 survey respondents, only 43.3% had ever heard of RSV (n = 358/827). The study identified key knowledge gaps (e.g. bacterial vs. viral nature of respiratory infections, RSV seasonality, common RSV symptoms, extent to which RSV causes respiratory infections in specific patient populations). Although 33.7% of RSV-aware adults (n = 120/356) reported being worried/very worried about RSV, 67.3% (n = 241/358) rarely consider RSV as a potential cause of their cold/flu-like symptoms. Results from this study highlight important knowledge gaps related to RSV, perceived risk, and severity of RSV. Findings can be used to support the development of tailored education efforts to support RSV prevention.

Opportunities and challenges for human papillomavirus vaccination in China

Current estimates of the HPV infection rate in China vary by geographic region (9.6-23.6%), with two age peaks in prevalence in women ≤20-25 years of age and 50-60 years of age. HPV-16, 52 and 58 are the most commonly-detected HPV genotypes in the Chinese population. In China, five HPV vaccines are licensed and several others are undergoing clinical trials. Multiple RCTs have shown the efficacy and safety of the bvHPV (Cervarix), Escherichia coli-produced bvHPV (Cecolin), Pichia pastoris-produced bvHPV (Walrinvax), qvHPV (Gardasil) and 9vHPV (Gardasil-9) vaccines in Chinese populations, including two studies showing long-term efficacy (≥8 years) for the bvHPV and qvHPV vaccines. Real-world data from China are scarce. Although modeling studies in China show HPV vaccination is cost-effective, uptake and population coverage are relatively low. Various policies have been implemented to raise awareness and increase vaccine coverage, with the long-term aim of eliminating cervical cancer in China.

Understanding healthcare providers' preferred attributes of pediatric pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in the United States

As higher-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) become available for pediatric populations in the US, it is important to understand healthcare provider (HCP) preferences for and acceptability of PCVs. US HCPs (pediatricians, family medicine physicians and advanced practitioners) completed an online, cross-sectional survey between March and April 2023. HCPs were eligible if they recommended or prescribed vaccines to children age <24 months, spent ≥25% of their time in direct patient care, and had ≥2 y of experience in their profession. The survey included a discrete choice experiment (DCE) in which HCPs selected preferred options from different hypothetical vaccine profiles with systematic variation in the levels of five attributes. Relative attribute importance was quantified. Among 548 HCP respondents, the median age was 43.2 y, and the majority were male (57.9%) and practiced in urban areas (69.7%). DCE results showed that attributes with the greatest impact on HCP decision-making were 1) immune response for the shared serotypes covered by PCV13 (31.4%), 2) percent of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) covered by vaccine serotypes (21.3%), 3) acute otitis media (AOM) label indication (20.3%), 4) effectiveness against serotype 3 (17.6%), and 5) number of serotypes in the vaccine (9.5%). Among US HCPs, the most important attribute of PCVs was comparability of immune response for PCV13 shared serotypes, while the number of serotypes was least important. Findings suggest new PCVs eliciting high immune responses for serotypes that contribute substantially to IPD burden and maintaining immunogenicity against serotypes in existing PCVs are preferred by HCPs.

Assessment of the knowledge and attitudes of the Iranian medical faculty toward plagiarism

This study is among the few investigations that assesses knowledge and attitudes of faculty members of medical sciences universities regarding plagiarism. This investigation focused on the relationship between personal factors and knowledge and attitudes toward plagiarism among Iranian faculty members of medical sciences affiliated with the Ministry of Health. This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 247 participants using demographic questionnaires that collected data on attitudes toward plagiarism and knowledge of plagiarism. The questionnaires were uploaded on Porsline. The subjects were provided with the purpose of the study, informed consent, and the link to the questionnaire through WhatsApp. The mean scores of knowledge variables and different domains of attitude were calculated, and then, the obtained averages were compared in terms of age, gender, and participation in ethics workshop using univariate tests. Finally, the MANCOVA was used considering five dimensions of the questionnaire to assess attitude, as multiple response variables, and independent variables, including gender and participation in the ethics workshop and control of knowledge and age. The mean age of the subjects in this study was 38.9 ± 8.4. 79.4% of the participants were women. Overall, 79.8% of people participated in ethics workshops, of whom 78% were women, and 86.5% were men. The mean score of knowledge in men and women was 1.35 ± 0.19 and 1.56. ± 0.24, respectively, which was higher in women than men (PV <0.001). The mean score of total attitudes was 3.19 ± 0.46. There was a high level of knowledge of plagiarism and positive attitudes toward plagiarism avoidance or prevention among participants in this study, which may spread to students, and help to promote integrity in the educational and clinical environment in Iran.

Sport-related concussion attitudes and knowledge in elite English female footballers

BACKGROUND

Sport-related concussions (SRC) are more common and more severe in women's football than men's yet the knowledge and attitudes of SRC in the women's game are not well understood. The objective of this study was to assess the SRC knowledge and attitude in elite female footballers.

METHODS

An online questionnaire was sent to all registered players in the English Football Association Women's Super League (WSL) and Championship. Respondents completed an amended version of the Rosenbaum Concussion Knowledge and Attitudes Survey (RoCKAS). Concussion Knowledge Index (CKI) and Concussion Attitudes Index (CAI) scores were derived for all respondents.

RESULTS

One hundred and twenty-three players completed the survey with 111 fitting the inclusion criteria. The mean CKI score was 20.5 ± 2.3 and the mean CAI score was 63.3 ± 6.3. A weak positive correlation was shown between the CKI and CAI (r = 0.20; p = 0.03). Previous concussion education had a significant impact on increased knowledge (U = 1198; p = 0.04). There was no significant difference in concussion attitudes and knowledge between the WSL and Championship or in those with a previous concussion history and no previous concussion (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Previous SRC education demonstrated an increased knowledge around concussion but a limited impact towards concussion attitudes. It is suggested that concussion education should be mandated across the professional game to enhance player welfare.

Health behaviors, knowledge, screening, and attitudes toward colorectal cancer among Iraqi adults

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the Iraqi population's health behaviors, knowledge, screening, attitudes toward colorectal cancer (CRC), and possible predictors that may affect their knowledge level.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SAMPLE

One thousand three hundred sixty-one Iraqi adults from Sulaymaniyah/Iraq.

MEASUREMENTS

The odds ratio (OR) was used to find the association between knowledge of CRC and associated factors.

RESULTS

Among participants, 6.1% had a colonoscopy, 4.0% had a sigmoidoscopy, and 60.8% heard CRC screening. Participants had low knowledge level of CRC risk factors (5.52 ± 1.39), and symptoms (3.73 ± 1.16) and had a medium knowledge of screening (4.35 ± 1.02). Respondents who retired (OR = 1.30; p = .00) and who had graduated from university (OR = 0.86; p = .01) had a high knowledge of CRC, while those who were aged 70 and above (OR = -1.08; p = .00) had a low knowledge of CRC. Furthermore, it was found that Iraqi adults who answered "no idea" to questions related to attitude and who answered incorrectly questions related to risk factors were likely to have low knowledge (p = .00).

CONCLUSIONS

We found a lack of knowledge, screening, and misconceptions about CRC and screening among Iraqi adults. Thus, health training and screening programs should target Iraqi populations.

Knowledge of community pharmacists on infantile haemangioma: Gaps and lack confidence to deliver propranolol still need to be filled

AIM

To evaluate the knowledge, practices and self-confidence of community pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students about infantile haemangioma (IH) and propranolol treatment.

METHODS

A national survey was conducted in France from May 2022 to October 2022. A 42-item online questionnaire was used to assess pharmacists' knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical features and management of IH and propranolol treatment.

RESULTS

The survey included 255 participants. The mean age was 34.9 years (±9.0); 225 (88%) were women. In all, 193 (76%) practised in urban pharmacies. Altogether, 83 participants (33%) had delivered oral propranolol solution for IH in the last 6 months. Participants' median score for self-confidence regarding propranolol dispensing was five (interquartile range, 2.5-6) on a scale of 1 to 10. Overall, 96 (38%) had more than 50% correct answers on the questionnaire. Multinomial regression models showed high scores on the questionnaire associated with high self-confidence when delivering oral propranolol solution, low number of years since graduation and having already delivered propranolol treatment.

CONCLUSION

This study highlights a lack of knowledge of IH and modalities of propranolol treatment by community pharmacists and slight self-confidence when delivering propranolol. Greater cooperation between healthcare professionals could improve the proper use of medicine.

Zoonoses-specific resources, collaborative networks, and enhanced communication can help US veterinarians tackle zoonotic diseases: results from a national survey

Increased incidence of zoonoses, coupled with veterinarians' occupational exposure, led to this study examining the knowledge of licensed US veterinarians on zoonoses and their disease prevention practices. This online survey supported by the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians received 466 responses from 36 US states; 67% of the respondents were female, and 72.5% were small animal medicine practitioners. The One Health concept was familiar among 82% of respondents, 51.3% knew of continuing education training on zoonoses, and 68% had attended such a training in the last 5 years. Respondents were unaware of which zoonoses to report to public health departments. For 3 out of 8 questions on standard operating procedures, statistically significant differences in protocols followed among small, large, and mixed animal medicine practitioners were observed. Most respondents believed they play a critical role in zoonoses prevention but would like more information on zoonotic diseases. Results indicate that assisting veterinarians with regularly updated information on zoonoses, providing targeted education and training to adhere to standardized infection control measures, and increasing communication with public health agencies and physicians may help prevent and reduce incidence of zoonoses.

Development and psychometric evaluation of the asthma Action plan questionnaire (AAPQ)

OBJECTIVE

To develop a practical and psychometrically sound tool to evaluate caregiver knowledge of their child's asthma action plan (AAP).

METHODS

A pilot study was conducted in a sample of 40 caregivers of children with asthma to assess the content validity, item difficulty, and item discrimination of the Asthma Action Plan Questionnaire (AAPQ). The inter-rater and intra-rater agreement of the AAPQ's scoring rubric were also examined. Subsequently, a large-scale study was conducted in a sample of 80 caregivers of children with asthma and 40 caregivers of children without current asthma and no prior exposure to patients with asthma to evaluate the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and known-groups validity of the AAPQ.

RESULTS

The 7-item AAPQ demonstrated acceptable content validity (a scale-content validity index of 0.98) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha =.63 and mean inter-item correlation coefficient of.20) and very strong test-retest reliability over a two-to-four-week period (r = .88, p < .001). The AAPQ discriminated between caregivers of children with asthma and caregivers of children without asthma (M ± SD 8.3 ± 1.6 vs. 4.3 ± 1.7, p < .001, respectively).

CONCLUSION

The AAPQ is a valid and reliable questionnaire that provides an assessment of caregivers' knowledge of their child's AAP and can guide educational interventions by healthcare providers.

Effect of a Nutritional Education Program on Children's Undernutrition in Indonesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial

INTRODUCTION

To assess effects of a nutritional education program on improving mothers' undernutrition knowledge, self-efficacy, and complementary feeding practices, and reducing undernutrition in children aged <2 years.

METHOD

A randomized controlled trial was conducted at a community healthcare center in Indonesia. The intervention group participated in a 4-week nutritional education program; the control group received standard care (n = 80; 1:1 ratio). Measurements consisted of mothers' knowledge of undernutrition, self-efficacy, and complementary feeding practices, and children's anthropometric indicators.

RESULTS

Intervention group mothers improved their understanding of undernutrition, self-efficacy, and complementary feeding practices compared to the control group. Additionally, children in the intervention group exhibited increased mean Z-scores for stunting, wasting, and being underweight at 12 and 24 weeks following the intervention.

DISCUSSION

Healthcare professionals can regularly provide nutritional education programs related to managing undernutrition and complementary feeding practices for mothers with children aged <2 years to prevent and improve undernutrition.

Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, and Lifestyle Practices That May Lead to Breast Cancer Risk Reduction among Female University Students in Lebanon

Research has identified both nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors for breast cancer (BC), with accumulating evidence showing that adopting adequate dietary practices could decrease the risk of this disease. This study aimed to assess nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and lifestyle practices (KAP) that may lead to BC risk reduction among female university students in Lebanon and examine the determinants of their practices. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sampling method, comprising 356 (response rate: 71.2%) female students at the American University of Beirut aged 18 to 25 years with no history of BC. Participants completed a pre-tested questionnaire addressing the objectives of the study. The modified Bloom's cut-off of 75% was used to categorize knowledge and practice scores as poor or good and attitudes as negative or positive. Large proportions of students had poor knowledge (68.3%), negative attitudes (65.4%), and poor practices (98.0%) scores. Pursuing a health-related major and having a higher GPA were associated with better knowledge and attitudes while being older and having a lower degree of stress were associated with positive attitudes only. Having a lower body mass index (BMI) was associated with better practice scores. Better knowledge significantly predicted higher intake of fruits and vegetables. Overall knowledge and attitudes were significantly correlated with each other, but neither was significantly correlated with overall practice. These findings underscore the importance of implementing public health programs geared towards improving nutrition KAP that may lead to BC risk reduction.

Nurses' knowledge and beliefs on pain management practices with hospitalised persons living with dementia: A qualitative descriptive study

AIM

To understand nurses' knowledge, beliefs and experiences affect pain management practices in hospitalised persons living with dementia (PLWD).

DESIGN

Naturalistic inquiry using qualitative descriptive design.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 registered nurses who worked in one acute care hospital in Southern California from October to November 2022. Data were analysed using content analysis to identify themes.

RESULTS

Two themes were developed: improvising pain assessment, which included how pain was documented, and administration hesitancy referring to nurse's concerns about PLWD's confusion. Nurses described the challenges of assessing pain in hospitalised PLWD particularly if they were non-verbal and/or demonstrating responsive behaviours. Nurse's years of experience, dementia stigma, and their unconscious biases affected nurses' pain management practices.

CONCLUSIONS

The study findings highlight the complex challenges of pain management in hospitalised PLWD that are exacerbated by nurses' knowledge deficits, negative stereotypical beliefs, dementia stigma and unconscious biases towards older people that contributes to undermanaged pain in hospitalised PLWD.

IMPLICATIONS

A comprehensive strategy using an implementation framework is needed to address nurse's knowledge gaps, unconscious bias, dementia stigma and techniques that enhance communication skills is suggested. Building a foundation in these areas would improve pain management in hospitalised PLWD.

IMPACT

Improving pain management in hospitalised PLWD would improve the quality of life, decrease hospital length of stay, prevent readmissions, and improve nurse satisfaction.

REPORTING METHOD

The study adhered to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ).

PATIENT CONTRIBUTIONS

Improving pain management in hospitalised PLWD would prevent long term confusion, episodes of delirium and improve quality of life as they recover from their acute illness for which they required hospital care.

Evaluating the Knowledge, Practice, and Regulatory Situation of Veterinary Experts Regarding Counterfeit Veterinary Medications in the Selected Districts of Central Gondar Zone, Ethiopia

Background

The intentional and illegal misrepresentation of fake medications involves falsely indicating their source. These fraudulent medications can include products that contain either accurate or incorrect ingredients, lack proper labeling, have insufficient quantities of ingredients, and are packaged with counterfeit packaging. This unlawful activity has led to treatment failures, the development of antibiotic resistance, adverse effects, and even deaths. Hence, the objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, practice, and regulatory status of veterinary drug experts in the central Gondar zone of Ethiopia regarding counterfeit veterinary medications.

Methods

From January 2023 to July 2023, a self-administered structured questionnaire was utilized to conduct a cross-sectional study in Central Gondar Zone, Ethiopia. The analysis of the data involved the application of descriptive and chi-square tests.

Results

The study revealed that the majority of professionals possessed a work experience ranging from 5 to 9 years (23; 56.1%). Additionally, a total of 25 individuals (61.0%) who participated in the research had not undergone any kind of training. It was observed that a significant proportion of participants (82.9%) possessed knowledge about counterfeit veterinary drugs. Only about 63% and 36% of respondents had high knowledge and good practice concerning veterinary counterfeit drugs, respectively. Only 29.3% of participants have reported practices. Furthermore, a poor regulatory level of coordination was detected (85.4%). The study revealed a significant (χ2 =7.6165; p = 0.022) disparity between the respondents' practice levels and training. Respondents' regulatory levels were also significantly associated (p < 0.05) with their sex (χ2 = 13.34; p = 0.001) and work experience (χ2 = 13.64; p = 0.033). The research findings also revealed a noteworthy correlation between practice and regulatory activity (χ2 = 15.0463; p = 0.005).

Conclusion

The study outlines the necessity of awareness initiatives, with a focus on the significance of veterinary experts' knowledge, practice, and regulatory efforts in addressing the issue of counterfeit veterinary medications.

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices Towards Psoriasis Among Patients and Their Family Members

Purpose

KAP studies serve to enhance health consciousness and furnish foundational data for appraising, strategizing, and enacting disease management and prejudice eradication initiatives. There remains a dearth of published studies elucidating the dimensions of knowledge, attitudes, and practices among psoriasis patients in China. To investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) towards psoriasis among patients and their family members in Northern China.

Methods

This web-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among psoriasis patients and their family members through a self-administered questionnaire.

Results

Among patients (n=260), their mean KAP scores were 9.76±5.69 (range: 0-19), 35.64±11.48 (range: 14-70), and 56.73±10.98 (range: 16-80), respectively. Among family members (n=237), their mean KAP scores were 11.93±5.34 (range: 0-19), 35.80±4.34 (range: 8-40), and 37.04±4.38 (range: 8-40), respectively. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis for patients indicated significant and negative path relations between knowledge and attitudes (β=-2.271, P<0.001), and between knowledge and practice (β=-0.398, P<0.001). Extended SEM analysis, which divides knowledge into K1, K2, and K3 parts, showed negative path relations between K3 and attitude (β=-1.300, P=0.002), between attitude and practice (β=-0.634, P<0.001). Moreover, SEM for family members showed positive path relations between knowledge and attitude (β=1.536, P<0.001), between attitude and practice (β=0.682, P<0.001).

Conclusion

Patients in Northern China demonstrated insufficient knowledge, negative attitude, and proactive practice, while their family members had insufficient knowledge, positive attitude, and proactive practice toward psoriasis. It is recommended to implement educational interventions addressing knowledge gaps among patients and families.

The Diverse Utility of Contrast Media Delivery and Dosing During Computed Tomography: An International Assessment of Knowledge and Practices

BACKGROUND

Despite the escalated production rate, the Iodinated Contrast Media (ICM) shortage continues, and demand outweighs supply.

AIM

The aim of this study is to investigate the knowledge and practice of ICM delivery in computed tomography (CT) among radiographers and radiologic technologists worldwide.

METHODS

An IRB-approved cross-sectional survey used Google Forms for data collection. It involved 94 CT radiographers from 27 countries and was divided into five sections. The first section gathered demographic information, followed by sections on experience, self-assessment of ICM reactions, and delivery technique. The third section explored ICM knowledge and its relation to CT parameters. The fourth and fifth sections focus on practices during pulmonary angiography CT and renal CT scans. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, the Chi- Square test, and ANOVA.

RESULTS

Knowledge was assessed with seven questions, and a score of at least 3.5 was needed for categorization. The median score was two, indicating low knowledge. Specifically, 64.9% of the participants scored lower than the two scores. Years of experience are strongly correlated with the level of knowledge, with 51.6% of radiographers having more than 10 years of experience demonstrating adequate knowledge. 41.7% of respondents demonstrated adequate knowledge when their duty was focused on CT. Furthermore, wide practice variability exists in all CT pulmonary angiography protocols among radiographers with adequate and inadequate knowledge.

CONCLUSION

Inexperienced individuals showed knowledge gaps, leading to varied practices and highlighting the need for educational programs. The study underscores establishing standardized Protocols and Practice Guidelines (PPGs) for contrast media administration in Radiology Departments. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of regular training programs, and international knowledge sharing. The potential for self-selection bias in the online survey sample is highlighted.

Health Protection And Improvement Sensitivity For Covid-19 Pandemic: Turkey's Case

This descriptive study was aimed at identifying the anxiety levels of Turkish people in the first three months of the pandemic, the coping methods they use to control this anxiety, and their knowledge and behavior about protection and prevention against COVID-19. The data were collected from 571 individuals. Of the individuals, 84.6% had anxiety. The anxiety levels of those who kept working during the pandemic were significantly higher than were the anxiety levels of those who did not (p < .05). The participants experienced a moderate level of anxiety, and they mostly used relaxation techniques, music therapy, and prayer/worship to cope with anxiety. The knowledge level of the individuals about COVID-19 was moderate.

Behavior Analysis of the Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Workers at PT. Maruki International Indonesia

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a set of tools used by workers to protect all or part of their body against the potential danger of work accidents in the work area. The use of personal protective equipment is often considered unimportant by workers, especially those working in dangerous and risky areas. The discipline of workers in using personal protective equipment is still low, so the risk of work accidents that can endanger workers is quite large. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between perception, motivation, knowledge and supervision of the behavior of using PPE at PT. Maruki International Indonesia, Tamalanrea District, Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province. This type of research is analytical research with a cross-sectional study approach with a total sample of 41 people. The results showed that there was a relationship between perceptions and the behavior of using PPE (p = .004), there was a relationship between motivation and behavior in using PPE (p = .002), there was no relationship between knowledge and behavior in using PPE (p = .814), there was a relationship between supervision and usage behavior. PPE (p = .008). It is recommended that workers be obedient and disciplined to use PPE (personal protective equipment) according to the regulations and make it a work norm, provide IEC PPE in all work locations, and increase supervision of the use of PPE through improved management.

The Knowledge and Practices Toward Food Safety Measures at Home in the Lebanese Community

Hygienic measures practiced at home are highly related to the occurrence of food-borne diseases during food production, storage, and handling. Contaminated food remains a major cause of several diarrheal diseases, hospitalizations, and spikes in medical expenses. In our current study, we aimed to assess the knowledge of food safety and the food safety and hygiene practices at home among the Lebanese population. A cross-sectional study was conducted through an online questionnaire including two sections. The first section included socio-demographic characteristics of participants, whereas the second section included questions related to practices and knowledge about food safety, divided into five parts; personal hygiene practices, dry and cold storage, sanitizing and cleaning and food intoxication. A total of 1101 Lebanese above 18 years participated and provided their responses to the questionnaire. Overall, the majority of participants had fair knowledge about food safety where 96.8% of the participants answered correctly about preventing microbial growth on food. 77.9% of those participants acquired their knowledge about food safety from articles, workshops, or the internet. Moreover, females, people with children and those who cook for themselves scored significantly higher than others (68.8, 70.6, and 70%, respectively). In comparison to younger participants (67.8%), older participants (50+ and 30-49) scored higher at 69.7% and 68.9%, respectively. Higher scores were obtained for questions related to storing dried foods/meat and poultry products with percentages 91.4 and 87.8%, respectively. However, lower scores were noticed on questions related to washing raw chicken before handling and storing eggs (9.7 and 12.3%, respectively). Altogether, our results revealed the need for directed food safety awareness campaigns at the national level to educate the Lebanese community about domestic food handling practices. We believe these campaigns can significantly reduce related diseases and hospitalizations.

Effectiveness of health education in improving knowledge, attitude and practice related to foodborne zoonotic trematodes in Vietnam, with a particular focus on Clonorchis sinensis

OBJECTIVE

Foodborne zoonotic trematodes (FZT), which infect the liver, lungs and intestines of humans, are an emerging public health concern in tropical countries including Vietnam. In northern Vietnam, Clonorchis sinensis is recognised as the most important species of the FZT. Up to now, small-scale studies conducted in the country have indicated that health education could improve participants' knowledge and practices related to clonorchiasis, however strong evidence is still lacking. We conducted an intervention trial between 2020 and 2021 in four communes in Yen Bai and Thanh Hoa province, aiming to evaluate the impact of an extended educational package on knowledge, attitude and practices related to clonorchiasis, as well as on knowledge on the large liver fluke and minute intestinal flukes.

METHODS

To this end, baseline and post-intervention questionnaires were conducted. Generalised estimating equations models were run to analyse the impact of the intervention on knowledge, attitudes and practices over time in the intervention versus control group. Finally, 172 people in the intervention group and 162 in the control group were included for analysis.

RESULTS

Results demonstrated that the intervention significantly improved clonorchiasis knowledge, attitudes and practices, with higher odds for a correct knowledge response (odds ratio (OR) = 2.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.84-4.27, p-value < 0.001), increased average mean attitude score (mean = 0.363, 95%CI = 0.182-0.544, p-value < 0.001), and a reduced odds of consuming raw fish (OR = 0.15, 95%CI = 0.06-0.40, p = 0.002) in the intervention group compared to the control group post-intervention versus baseline. Additionally, participants in the intervention group exhibited enhanced basic knowledge of the large liver fluke and minute intestinal flukes post-intervention.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings demonstrate the potential of health education programs in preventing clonorchiasis in endemic areas, emphasising the importance of continued health education as a critical component of integrated control programs for clonorchiasis.

Evaluation of Breast Health Promotion Intervention Among Catholic Nuns in Lake Zone 'Tanzania

Objective

Despite facing unique barriers, Catholic nuns in Tanzania require accessible breast health promotion. This study explores interventions to empower nuns through knowledge, improved attitudes, and positive practices, ultimately promoting well-being and early detection for better breast cancer outcomes.

Materials and Methods

A quasi-experimental design study guided by the Health Belief Model was conducted to monitor the implementation of a breast health intervention program aimed at increasing breast cancer screening knowledge among 385 Catholic nuns aged 20 to over 60 years old within Lake Zone, Tanzania. Data were collected at two-time points: pre-intervention (baseline) and implementation phase intervention (after three months). The intervention consisted of a 2-hour educational session. Participants had opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback.

Results

The breast health promotion intervention was well-received by Catholic nuns, with 339 (88%) expressing strong motivation to learn and promote awareness. The training effectively increased knowledge and positive attitudes towards breast cancer screening. Researcher assistants successfully delivered the program, and 354 (92%) of participants expressed interest in continued education and support. The intervention addressed cultural barriers and empowered nuns to take charge of their health, though some challenges remain meanwhile 158 (41%) had limited prior knowledge, 81 (21%) hesitated to discuss breast health due to religious beliefs, and some faced difficulty applying the learnings.

Conclusion

Overall, the breast health promotion intervention had a positive outcome on the Catholic nuns' awareness and knowledge of breast health. However, addressing the identified barriers and challenges is crucial to further enhance the intervention's effectiveness and sustainability.

Awareness, attitudes, and beliefs of dementia in Indonesia

INTRODUCTION

Tackling dementia stigma is a policy priority. In Indonesia, we have little insight into the general public's knowledge and attitudes about dementia.

METHODS

Cross-sectional study of 4430 Indonesian adults recruited from Jakarta and North Sumatra, Indonesia. Measures included dementia knowledge and attitudes.

RESULTS

A total of 86.3% (n = 3,803) of adults had not heard of the terms dementia or Alzheimer's disease, and commonly viewed dementia as a normal part of aging. Being older, incorrect knowledge about etiology, not having heard of the terms dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease, having less than primary education, and being from North Sumatra were associated with more negative attitudes (p-values < 0.05).

DISCUSSION

Misconceptions and lack of awareness about dementia are common in Indonesia. Attitudes tended not to be negative, but our research highlights factors associated with dementia attitudes. Future research should use this information to better tailor and target potential anti-stigma strategies.

Validation of an educational comic book to guide conducts in situations of dental trauma

BACKGROUND/AIM

Childhood dental trauma poses a prevalent concern, and the limited knowledge of lay caregivers toward the needed immediate actions can adversely affect a child's well-being. This study aimed to create and validate an educational comic book for lay individuals, designed to guide immediate actions in dental trauma cases, and assess its effects toward enhancing reader knowledge.

METHODOLOGY

The four-stage study involved: (1) Literature review and script development; (2) Version 1 of the comic book creation (including illustrations, layout, and design) and Flesch Readability Index (FI) calculation; (3) Version 1 validation by expert judges, assessed by the Content Validity Index (CVI); (4) Version 1 refinement based on the judges' feedback, recalculation of FI, and a pilot test (CVI) involving lay individuals who validated the final material (Version 2). The validation process involved 67 participants, including 13 specialist judges and 54 elementary school teachers.

RESULTS

The CVI for Version 1 was calculated at 0.89 (89%), indicating a favorable level of agreement on the evaluated criteria. The FI was determined as 91.1%, indicating a high level of readability. The FI for Version 2 was 92.1% (indicating a very easy level of comprehension). The CVI calculated for the target audience after the pilot test was 0.99 (99%), denoting a substantial agreement among the participants. In assessing the level of knowledge, a significant increase was observed in the rate of correct answers after the comic book was read by lay individuals (p < 0.05), inasmuch as the percentage rose from 50.5% before to 81.2% after reading it.

CONCLUSION

The educational comic book proved valid in terms of readability, appearance, and content. Furthermore, it had a positive impact on gaining the knowledge needed to take the appropriate actions, thus making it a valuable tool for guiding the lay population in cases of dental trauma.

Knowledge, attitude, and practice of critical care nurses and their influence on acute skin failure patients in China: A multicenter cross-sectional study

AIM

Acute skin failure (ASF) can happen in critically ill patients. Therefore, adequate knowledge and skills regarding ASF are essential to manage this disorder. The aim of this work was to investigate the nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding ASF patients and to analyze its influencing factors in the intensive care unit.

METHODS

A multicenter cross-sectional study was performed in 10 tertiary hospitals in March 2022. Eligible nurses received a survey with a self-designed questionnaire about their KAP regarding ASF, which included three dimensions and a maximum score of 120. A higher score corresponded to better KAP.

RESULTS

A total of 255 nurses participated in this study. The mean KAP score was 75.6 ± 16.9. The mean scores of the knowledge, attitude, and practice dimensions were 26.2 ± 10.6, 38.2 ± 6.1, and 11.3 ± 4.3, respectively. The dimensions were ranked according to score (from low to high) as follows: knowledge (2.6 ± 1.1), practice (2.8 ± 1.1), and attitude (3.8 ± 0.6). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that more training sessions and an advanced professional title were associated with higher KAP scores.

CONCLUSIONS

The overall KAP score on ASF was low in nurses. Nurses had a positive attitude towards ASF, but their knowledge and practice required significant improvement. Those who had received more training and held a more advanced professional title exhibited higher KAP scores regarding ASF. Therefore, nurse managers should establish a relevant knowledge training system, strengthen relevant training, and improve nursing practices for ASF in order to achieve a high level of KAP in nurses who treat ASF patients.

Knowledge and attitudes toward gene therapy of a cohort of Italian patients with hemophilia

BACKGROUND

Gene therapy (GT) has recently become a new therapeutic option for hemophilia A and B. However, patient levels of knowledge and attitudes toward it are poorly understood. A general lack of knowledge and education has been highlighted in previous studies. To date, no studies focused on patient attitudes toward GT, priorities, concerns, and information needs, nor how these factors might influence their willingness to accept it.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate knowledge and attitudes toward GT of an Italian cohort of patients with hemophilia.

METHODS

A questionnaire was administered to patients with hemophilia A and B to evaluate: (1) clinical data; (2) GT knowledge; (3) willingness to accept GT, perceived benefits and concerns, and information needs.

RESULTS

Eighty-five patients participated in the study; 64 with severe hemophilia A and 4 with severe hemophilia B. Participants appeared to know only general information on GT, but little about its detailed functioning. The avoidance of frequent infusions and the reduction of bleeding episodes seem to be the most relevant expected benefits. The possibility of failing or losing effectiveness of GT over time was the main concern. Regarding willingness to undergo GT, 54.4% of respondents gave a negative response, mainly due to fear that treatment will lose effectiveness over time, fear of side effects, and lack of GT knowledge. Greater knowledge increased the acceptability of this disruptive therapy among patients with severe hemophilia.

CONCLUSION

Overall, Italian patients with hemophilia showed poor knowledge of GT. However, it seems that greater knowledge was associated with a greater willingness to have GT.

Assessing the impact of an online dementia awareness initiative co-created with and for English, Arabic and Vietnamese speaking communities: A case study

BACKGROUND

Awareness and understanding of dementia remain limited in ethnically diverse populations in multicultural societies due to culturally inappropriate and inaccessible information.

OBJECTIVE

To establish the impact, helpers and hinderers of an online multilingual dementia awareness initiative co-created with and for English, Arabic and Vietnamese speaking people.

DESIGN

A case study using mixed methods to assess the impact and implementation of an information session on dementia knowledge.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

The study was conducted with English, Arabic and Vietnamese speaking individuals in Canterbury-Bankstown, Australia.

INTERVENTION STUDIED

A dementia alliance co-created an online multilingual dementia information session, which was delivered synchronously in English, Arabic and Vietnamese by trained facilitators.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

In-session group discussions, quizzes and a postsession survey assessed the impact on dementia knowledge. A postimplementation focus group explored the factors that helped and hindered the initiative.

RESULTS

The online dementia information session successfully supported participants understanding of dementia causes, impacts and care strategies. The initiative was hindered by competing priorities and limited accessibility to target audiences, while it was helped by the support of an established organisation and feedback mechanisms.

DISCUSSION

Ongoing dementia education and awareness-raising campaigns that are culturally sensitive are needed in communities to promote dementia literacy and help-seeking.

CONCLUSIONS

An online multilingual dementia information session can be an effective way to improve dementia literacy and advocate for change in multicultural communities.

Measure of Caregiver Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Knowledge Is Responsive to Decision Aid on Treatment for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

OBJECTIVE

Adapt and test a measure of knowledge for caregivers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and evaluate the impact of the information component of a decision aid (DA) on participant knowledge.

METHODS

A set of seven knowledge items were created based on prior knowledge measures and clinical guidelines. As part of a larger cross-sectional survey study of caregivers of children diagnosed with ADHD, caregivers were randomized to one of two arms: 1) a DA arm, where participants reviewed the information component of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital's DA, and 2) a control arm, where participants were not shown a DA. All participants completed the seven knowledge items. Knowledge items were assessed for difficulty, quality of distractors, acceptability, and redundancy. Total knowledge scores (0-100) for the DA and control arm were compared.

RESULTS

Caregivers were assigned to the DA arm (n = 243) or the control arm (n = 260). All 7 knowledge items were retained as no items were too difficult or too easy, all response options were used, there were little missing data, and no items were redundant. The overall knowledge score was normally distributed, and almost covered the full range of scores (5-100). Those who received the DA component had higher knowledge scores (M=68, SD=23) than those who did not receive the DA component (M=60, SD=19, P < .01, d=0.4).

CONCLUSIONS

The Caregiver ADHD Knowledge (CAKe) measure was acceptable and demonstrated construct validity as those who were assigned to review the DA component demonstrated greater knowledge than those who were not assigned to review the DA component.

Conceptual framework of mental health literacy: Results from a scoping review and a Delphi survey

Mental health literacy (MHL) has been identified as a factor influencing early help-seeking for mental health problems (MHPs) and stigmatizing attitudes. However, the lack of consensus on its definition has led to considerable heterogeneity in measurement and, consequently, methodological challenges in comparing data. In this way, the present study was conducted with the following objectives: in Phase I, mapping the existing literature through a scoping review; in Phase 2, 28 experts in the field of mental health participated to develop a consensus statement on the relevance and importance of the findings from Phase 1. A total of 37 articles were included for review. Notable nuances were identified in the conceptualization of MHL, particularly with regard to the fact that it should not be limited to mental disorders but should also encompass mental health. Furthermore, the sociocultural influence was highlighted as shaping MHL, recognizing it as a modifiable competence that adapts to different contexts and life stages, involving both individual and collective levels. The experts deemed the findings pertinent and relevant with a high degree of consensus, except for factors related to MHL. This framework provides a refined definition of MHL and related factors that should be taken into account to guide nursing and other disciplines' studies and interventions on MHL. The evolution of this concept includes dimensions to be considered in future research, especially when developing new measurement instruments or implementing educational programmes. This knowledge and skills cannot be determined globally without considering the context and development of the individual.

Development and psychometric properties of a questionnaire about knowledge of lay people about traumatic dental injury

BACKGROUND/AIMS

The level of knowledge about traumatic dental injuries (TDI) of lay people from a national point of view has never been studied and there is currently a lack of validated research instruments on this issue. The present study aims to develop and validate a questionnaire (TDI-Q) to assess the knowledge of lay people about TDI, including participants from the five regions of Brazil.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

TDI-Q was drafted, in Brazilian Portuguese, based on the recommendations of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT). Before its application, TDI-Q was evaluated by dentists, lay people, linguists, and psychometrists. The questionnaire was applied to measure temporal stability at two distinct times, with an interval of 15-20 days between the two applications: test (n = 110) and retest (n = 50). The presence of floor and ceiling effects were investigated by analyzing the frequency of responses of the questionnaire; convergent construct validity was tested through Spearman's correlation; the Mann-Whitney test was applied to discriminant construct validity. Temporal stability and internal consistency were evaluated through intraclass correlation coefficient and Cronbach's alpha, respectively.

RESULTS

The floor and ceiling effects were not observed (0.9% and 2.7%, respectively); convergent validity analysis indicated a positive and strong correlation (r = 0.50; p < .001). Significant discriminant construct validity (p < .05) was observed. Satisfactory internal consistency (α = 0.7) and temporal stability (ICC = 0.82, p < .001) were also achieved.

CONCLUSION

TDI-Q proved to have good psychometric properties and to be a reliable tool for evaluating the knowledge of lay people regarding TDI in the Brazilian population.

Prevalence and Correlates of Cervical Cancer Prevention Knowledge Among High School Students in Ghana

INTRODUCTION

Cervical cancer is a preventable yet highly prevalent disease in Africa. Despite female adolescents and young women being a target group for cervical cancer prevention strategies, little research has examined their knowledge of how to prevent the disease. The study aimed to describe: (a) knowledge about cervical cancer prevention and (b) sociodemographic, social, and systemic factors associated with and interacting with knowledge among female senior high school students in Ghana.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey assessed knowledge about (a) risk factors and (b) primary and secondary prevention of cervical cancer among 2,400 female students from 17 public senior high schools in the Ashanti region, Ghana. Descriptive statistics were used to describe knowledge. Linear mixed-effects regression models were used to examine factors associated with knowledge scores.

RESULTS

Knowledge gaps were observed for at least two-thirds (>65%) of students. Most students (mean age = 17) did not know that early sexual debut (before 18 years) is a risk factor for cervical cancer (72%) and that a blood test cannot detect cervical cancer (71%). Students in later stages of senior high school education and those who received sexual health education from teachers and parents had significantly greater cervical cancer knowledge scores than their counterparts. Interactive effects showed that school-based sexual health education was associated with higher knowledge scores than home-based education among students.

CONCLUSIONS

Most female senior high school students had gaps in knowledge about cervical cancer prevention. Finding new ways to strengthen the capacity of schools and parents to deliver accurate cervical cancer prevention information is warranted.

Deficient knowledge in patients with heart failure: A study of diagnostic accuracy and etiological relationships

PURPOSE

To evaluate the accuracy of defining characteristics and causal relationships of the etiological factors of the nursing diagnosis deficient knowledge in individuals with heart failure .

DATA SOURCES

An analytical, cross-sectional study on the diagnostic accuracy of the defining characteristics and causal relationships of the etiological factors of the nursing diagnosis. The sample consisted of 140 patients with chronic HF and in outpatient follow-up. The latent class analysis method was used to test the accuracy of measurements and estimate the prevalence of the diagnosis. The calculation of subsequent probabilities and the odds ratio ( were also parameters employed. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Pernambuco.

DATA SYNTHESIS

The diagnosis had an estimated prevalence of 38.57% in the sample. The inaccurate statements about the disease and/or therapy, self-care deficient performance, and inadequate behavior were the clinical indicators that best predicted the presence of the diagnosis and demonstrated the same sensitivity value (1.0000), specificity (1.0000), and 95% confidence interval (0.9999-1.0000) for all. The populations at risk was elderly (OR = 2.12, confidence interval 95% = 1.05-4.27), and illiterate individuals (OR = 2.07, confidence interval 95% = 1.03-4.16) had an approximately twofold great chance of developing havening deficient knowledge.

CONCLUSION

The evaluation of the accuracy of clinical indicators, corresponding to the defining characteristics in the study, contributed to screening and diagnostic establishment capacity in clinical practice, and to the translation of theoretical and practical knowledge.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Accurate clinical indicators of the nursing diagnosis deficient knowledge facilitate the clinical reasoning of nurses and favor the professional's role in the development of health education strategies focused on the acquisition of knowledge about the disease by patients, family members, and caregivers.

Impact of virtual education based on health belief model on cervical cancer screening behavior in middle-aged women: A quasi-experimental study

BACKGROUND

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide and a cause of high mortality among people. Pap smear screening is an appropriate method to prevent cervical cancer and reduce its mortality.

AIM

This study aimed to determine the effect of web-based education based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) on cervical cancer screening behavior in middle-aged women.

METHODS AND RESULTS

This study is a quasi-experimental interventional research that was conducted on 240 middle-aged women aged 40-59 years in Isfahan, Iran, in 2022. An online educational intervention based on the constructs of the Health Belief Model was conducted for the intervention group using the Triple-B platform. The information on the intervention and control groups was collected before, immediately after the intervention, and 2 months later using a valid questionnaire. The gathered Data was analyzed using ANOVA and LSD post-hoc, independent samples t test, chi-square, and MANCOVA statistical tests in SPSS 26 software. After the intervention, the mean scores of knowledge, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, self-efficacy, and internal cues to action in the intervention group increased and the mean score of perceived barriers decreased (p < .001). The mean score of the external cues to action did not show a significant difference between the intervention and control groups before, immediately, and 2 months after the intervention. Two months after the intervention, 32 women (26.2%) in the intervention group and two women (1.7%) in the control group performed the Pap smear test.

CONCLUSION

Web-based educational intervention based on HBM using different strategies such as question and answer, presentation of infographics, lectures, brainstorming, showing videos and numerous educational images can be an effective way for increasing knowledge and cognitive variables of women and doing Pap smear test.

Knowledge of and Attitudes Toward Hearing Loss Among Primary Care Physicians in the Public Health Sector of Mauritius

Introduction  Primary care physicians are essential first points of contact for patients with hearing loss. Thus, knowledge of hearing loss and related aspects is essential to ensure the optimal management of individuals with suspected hearing loss. Objective  This study aimed to determine the knowledge of and attitudes toward hearing loss among primary care physicians in the public health sector in Mauritius. Methods  In this cross-sectional descriptive cohort study, 320 primary care physicians completed an online questionnaire adapted from previous questionnaires on knowledge of and attitudes toward hearing loss. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and cross-sectional analyses. Results  Primary care physicians showed limited knowledge of hearing loss in areas such as early identification and intervention, professionals responsible for hearing assessments, and hearing tests used for assessing hearing sensitivity. However, the responses also showed positive attitudes toward hearing loss. Significant associations between knowledge of and attitudes toward hearing loss were obtained regarding the type of physician, length of practice, and department posted in. Ear, nose, and throat specialists, as well as pediatricians, demonstrated significantly higher scores for both knowledge of and positive attitudes toward hearing loss. Conclusions  The findings highlight a strong need for ongoing medical education to spread awareness about hearing loss among primary care physicians in the public health sector of Mauritius.

A co-designed evaluation study to identify Breastfeeding Knowledge of General Practitioners' and Practice Nurses'

The World Health Organization and American Academy of Paediatrics recommend exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with complementary solid foods for up to 2 years and beyond. Despite the well-established importance of breastfeeding, Irish rates remain the lowest in Europe. Healthcare professionals' breastfeeding knowledge and skills have a positive impact on increasing breastfeeding rates. There is limited evidence of the knowledge, attitudes or practices of general practitioners (GPs) and general practice nurses (GPNs), which is essential to breastfeeding in Ireland. The aim of this study was to evaluate the breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes and practices of GPs and GPNs in one community healthcare organisation (CHO) in Ireland. A co-designed evaluation study was used following low-risk ethical exemption (LS-LR-22-161). A modified version of a validated breastfeeding questionnaire was developed. A Project Steering Committee was established that included patient, and public involvement stakeholders. The anonymised survey was distributed via online Qualtrics platform (November 2022-February 2023). STROBE Guidelines were utilised. The overall response rate was 25.9% (n = 121) and valid responses were reported in the article. The total population size was n = 468 (GPs n = 290 and GPNs n = 178). Our pilot study identified that 42.7% (n = 47/110) of respondents never attended a breastfeeding education programme, and 53.9% (n = 55/102) identified that their knowledge could be improved. The majority of respondents, 92.9% (n = 92/99) wish to complete further education in breastfeeding. The results of this pilot study in one CHO in Ireland indicate a gap in knowledge and a need for specific breastfeeding and lactation theoretical and skills training for GPs and GPNs working in primary care to support, promote and protect breastfeeding.

The knowledge and attitude on the prevention of pressure ulcers in Chinese nurses: A cross-sectional study in 93 tertiary and secondary hospitals

Although pressure ulcers are related to substantial health burdens, they may be preventable. Since nurses play a fundamental role in pressure ulcer prevention, their knowledge and attitude are of great importance. This study aims to investigate the current situation and associated factors of nurses' knowledge and attitude on the prevention of pressure ulcers from both tertiary and secondary hospitals. A total of 11 347 nurses were recruited including 7108 nurses (62.6%) from tertiary hospitals and 4239 nurses (37.4%) from secondary hospitals. The median (interquartile range) of the pressure ulcer knowledge score was 51% (38%, 90%) for all the participants with the lowest scores on prevention of pressure ulcers (51.33%). The mean (standard deviation) of attitude towards pressure ulcer prevention was 39.64 (4.65) with the lowest scores on personal competency to prevent pressure ulcers (mean 3.09). The results of multivariate linear regression showed that hospital level, nurses' age, years of work experience, initial education level at work and time of last training significantly associated with nurses' knowledge of pressure ulcer prevention. Meanwhile, hospital level, job title, previous training, time of last training and subjective needs for further training had significant association with nurses' attitude towards pressure ulcer prevention (all p < 0.05). Results showed inadequate knowledge but relative positive attitudes in nurses indicating the importance to deliver continuing education and training regarding pressure ulcer prevention in practice to improve the quality of care.

Improving CRNAs' Confidence and Perceived Knowledge of Endosurgical Patients Who Use Marijuana: A Quality Improvement Project

Although some researchers have reported health-related benefits of marijuana, others have reported adverse side effects in nearly every organ system. Patterns of marijuana use are evolving, as is researchers' understanding of marijuana use for healthcare. Despite these findings and developments, nurse anesthetists are inadequately educated about marijuana's perioperative effects on endosurgical patients. As a result, many nurse anesthetists lack confidence in and knowledge of the perioperative care of endosurgical patients under the influence of marijuana. This lack of confidence and knowledge limits the ability of nurse anesthetists to provide optimal care, threatens patient safety, and potentially impairs surgical outcomes. To improve the confidence and perceived knowledge of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) regarding perioperative care of endosurgical patients who use marijuana, a quality improvement project was conducted in a metropolitan endosurgical center in California. After the project, participating CRNAs (N = 15) reported increased confidence (z = -0.982; P = .325, > .05) and significantly improved perceived knowledge (z = -3.04; P = .002, < .05) regarding care of patients who use marijuana. For endosurgical patients who used marijuana prior to their procedure, knowledgeable and confident anesthesia care for the side effects of marijuana substantially improved the quality of care, communication, and reduced cancellations.

Knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of physical therapists towards conventional physical therapy-across-sectional study

Background

Conventional physical therapy (CPT) is widely used in clinical practice and known to contribute beneficially to patient's health conditions but remains loosely defined. Research has shown inconsistency in the definition and utilization of CPT among physical therapists in clinical and research settings, limiting its generalisability and reproducibility. Therefore, this study evaluates physical therapists' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions toward CPT.

Methods

A cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire containing 36 questions was distributed among 238 licensed physical therapists. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to measure the physical therapists' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards CPT.

Results

Physical therapists showed limited knowledge of CPT in rehabilitation (4.09±1.698, 51%). However, the knowledge scores were significantly associated with age (P=0.002), educational levels (P=0.006), and years of work experience (P=0.001). Nevertheless, physical therapists showed an overall positive attitude towards CPT and perceived it as essential to rehabilitation.

Conclusion

Most physical therapists have low knowledge about CPT but positive attitudes and perceptions. Therefore, customized medical education is necessary to incorporate CPT theories and applications into physical therapists' rehabilitation programs.

Knowledge of risk factors and early detection methods toward breast cancer among healthcare workers in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

BACKGROUND

Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent cancer among women, and it typically presents late in developing countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), leading to higher mortality rates. Late detection at advanced stages of breast cancer can be attributed to the absence of appropriate screening programs and low levels of awareness.

AIMS

To evaluate the level of BC knowledge among healthcare workers (HCWs) and identify determinants of good BC knowledge.

METHODS AND RESULTS

An analytical cross-sectional survey was conducted from March 1 to 31, 2022 involving HCWs practicing in Kinshasa, DRC. Data were collected using a questionnaire administered through direct interviews. Bivariate and multivariate regression techniques were applied. The study interviewed 543 HCWs, with a median age of 35 years (interquartile range: 29-43). Of these, 61% had good BC knowledge, while 39% had poor BC knowledge. Multivariate analysis revealed that HCWs aged 50 years and over (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.3 [1.2-4.5]), female HCWs (aOR = 1.8 [1.1-2.4]), HCWs working in public healthcare facilities (aOR = 1.5 [1.1-2.5]), and HCWs who had received training on BC (aOR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.5-3.3) were determinants of good BC knowledge.

CONCLUSION

This study found that 61% of the surveyed HCWs had good BC knowledge. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of knowledge dissemination. Therefore, it is important to implement continuing medical education programs that focus on raising awareness and improving BC knowledge among HCWs.

Energy drink consumption among medical students in Jordan - prevalence, attitudes, and associated factors: a cross-sectional study

Background

Energy drinks (ED) are popular beverages that contain high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other supplements, such as vitamins, which are marketed to enhance mental alertness and physical performance. Studies have shown that energy drink consumption is prevalent among medical students. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence, attitudes, and factors associated with energy drink consumption among medical students in Jordan.

Materials and methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students from six public universities in Jordan. A total of 307 students were included in the study, and data were collected using an expert-validated questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.

Results

The study found that 50% of the sample had consumed ED, half of them started consuming them at the age of 16-18, and learned about them from friends. The primary reasons for consuming ED were to stay awake at night and the majority of them increase their consumption during exams to increase alertness. Regular energy drink consumption was significantly associated with being a student at the university located in the south governorate of Jordan (P=0.021), living alone (P=0.000), drinking alcohol (P=0.049), drinking coffee daily (P=0.043), and consuming more than 10 cans of soft drinks weekly (P=0.001). However, sex, age, academic achievement, and smoking status had no significant association with regular energy drink consumption. Students with regular energy drink consumption experienced daytime sleepiness, decreased concentration, fatigue, and reduced performance more than students with no regular energy drink consumption.

Conclusion

The prevalence of energy drink consumption among medical students in Jordan is high, with factors such as social influences, lifestyle behaviors, and academic pressure being significant contributors. This study highlights the need for interventions to promote healthy behaviors and raise awareness about the potential harms of ED among medical students.

Hemodialysis nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practices in managing vascular access: A cross-sectional study in Saudi Arabia

Hemodialysis continues to be the primary approach for renal replacement therapy. Vascular access (VA), particularly arteriovenous fistula or arteriovenous graft, is the preferred technique for establishing hemodialysis access due to its lower risk of infection and central venous stenosis compared to catheters. The aim of this cross-sectional investigation was to examine hemodialysis nurses' knowledge, confidence, and practices in managing VA in Saudi Arabia. This is an online cross-sectional survey study that was conducted in Saudi Arabia between June and August 2023. This study utilized a previously validated questionnaire. Examined dialysis nurses' knowledge, attitude, practice, and self-efficacy pertaining to VA cannulation and evaluation. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of better knowledge of dialysis VA. A total of 197 participants were involved in this study. Around one-third of the study participants (37.0%) reported that they have received specialized training in managing VA. Participants agreement (answered agree or strongly agree) on statements that examined attitudes toward dialysis VA cannulation and management was high and ranged between 75.0% and 93.0%. The majority of participants (97.5%) reported that they perform this assessment. Most nurses (65%) preferred the rope-ladder technique. Participants agreement on statements that examined self-efficacy on dialysis VA cannulation and management was high and ranged between 72.1% and 98.0%. The most commonly agreed upon statement was that "they have confident in performing hemodialysis access (arteriovenous fistula and arteriovenous graft) assessment before cannulation." With 98.0% (answered agree and strongly agree). The mean knowledge score for our study sample was 6.4 (SD: 2.0) out of 12 (53.3%); which reflects marginal-level of knowledge on dialysis VA. Binary logistic regression analysis identified that nurses who have undergraduate degree are 92% more likely to be knowledgeable on dialysis VA compared to others (P < .05). Concerning VA, the level of knowledge among hemodialysis nurses working in Saudi Arabia was inadequate. Nurses who hold an undergraduate degree are presumed to have a more extensive understanding of dialysis VA. Further education programs are necessary for HD nurses to enhance their knowledge of VA, thereby optimizing their professional practices and enhancing the outcomes for their patients.

Knowledge of non-communicable diseases and access to healthcare services among adults before and during COVID-19 pandemic in rural Tanzania

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected access to healthcare services, particularly among individuals living with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) who require regular healthcare visits. Studies suggest that knowledge about a specific disease is closely linked to the ability to access services for that condition. In preparation for the future, we conducted the study to assess knowledge of NCDs and access to healthcare services among adults residing in rural areas before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study in rural Tanzania in October 2022, a few months after the end of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 689 community residents participated in the study. The level of knowledge of NCDs was assessed using an 11-item Likert questionnaire, which was later dichotomized into adequate and inadequate levels of knowledge. In addition, access to healthcare was assessed before and during the pandemic. We summarized the results using descriptive statistics and logistic regression was applied to determine factors associated with adequate levels of knowledge of NCDs. All statistical tests were two-sided; a p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. All data analyses were performed using SPSS.

Results

Among 689 participants, more than half 369 (55%) had adequate knowledge of whether a disease is NCD or not; specifically, 495 (73.8%), 465 (69.3%), and 349 (52%) knew that hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and stroke are NCDs while 424 (63.2%) know that UTI is not NCD. Of the interviewed participants, 75 (11.2%) had at least one NCD. During the COVID-19 pandemic the majority 57 (72.2%) accessed healthcare services from nearby health facilities followed by traditional healers 10 (12.7%) and community drug outlets 8 (10.1%). Residence and education level were found to be significantly associated with knowledge of NCDs among participants.

Conclusion

The study revealed that the community has a moderate level of knowledge of NCDs, and during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks, people living with NCD (s) relied on nearby health facilities to obtain healthcare services. Health system preparedness and response to pandemics should take into account empowering the community members to understand that NCD care is continuously needed even during pandemic times. We further advocate for a qualitative study to explore contextual factors influencing the knowledge of NCDs and access to healthcare services beyond the big domains of education and residence.

Clinical Decision Support Requirements for Ventricular Tachycardia Diagnosis Within the Frameworks of Knowledge and Practice: Survey Study

BACKGROUND

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) diagnosis is challenging due to the similarity between VT and some forms of supraventricular tachycardia, complexity of clinical manifestations, heterogeneity of underlying diseases, and potential for life-threatening hemodynamic instability. Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) have emerged as promising tools to augment the diagnostic capabilities of cardiologists. However, a requirements analysis is acknowledged to be vital for the success of a CDSS, especially for complex clinical tasks such as VT diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE

The aims of this study were to analyze the requirements for a VT diagnosis CDSS within the frameworks of knowledge and practice and to determine the clinical decision support (CDS) needs.

METHODS

Our multidisciplinary team first conducted semistructured interviews with seven cardiologists related to the clinical challenges of VT and expected decision support. A questionnaire was designed by the multidisciplinary team based on the results of interviews. The questionnaire was divided into four sections: demographic information, knowledge assessment, practice assessment, and CDS needs. The practice section consisted of two simulated cases for a total score of 10 marks. Online questionnaires were disseminated to registered cardiologists across China from December 2022 to February 2023. The scores for the practice section were summarized as continuous variables, using the mean, median, and range. The knowledge and CDS needs sections were assessed using a 4-point Likert scale without a neutral option. Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to investigate the relationship between scores and practice years or specialty.

RESULTS

Of the 687 cardiologists who completed the questionnaire, 567 responses were eligible for further analysis. The results of the knowledge assessment showed that 383 cardiologists (68%) lacked knowledge in diagnostic evaluation. The overall average score of the practice assessment was 6.11 (SD 0.55); the etiological diagnosis section had the highest overall scores (mean 6.74, SD 1.75), whereas the diagnostic evaluation section had the lowest scores (mean 5.78, SD 1.19). A majority of cardiologists (344/567, 60.7%) reported the need for a CDSS. There was a significant difference in practice competency scores between general cardiologists and arrhythmia specialists (P=.02).

CONCLUSIONS

There was a notable deficiency in the knowledge and practice of VT among Chinese cardiologists. Specific knowledge and practice support requirements were identified, which provide a foundation for further development and optimization of a CDSS. Moreover, it is important to consider clinicians' specialization levels and years of practice for effective and personalized support.

Blood Transfusion Procedure: Assessment of Serbian Intensive Care Nurses' Knowledge

Many patients require administering one or more blood components during hospitalisation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Therefore, nurses' knowledge of who is responsible for immediately administering blood transfusions, monitoring patients, and identifying and managing transfusion reactions is crucial. This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study aimed to assess the knowledge of ICU nurses in tertiary healthcare institutions about blood transfusion procedures. The questionnaire about the transfusion procedure was designed and reviewed by experts. The questionnaire consisted of 29 items divided into three domains. The scores on the knowledge test ranged from 10 to 27. Generally, 57.7% of nurses had moderate, 23.4% low, and 18.9% high levels of knowledge about the transfusion procedure. Most nurses answered correctly about refreezing fresh frozen plasma, verifying the transfusion product, and identifying the patient. Of the nurses, 91.0% would recognise mild allergic reactions, and 98.2% knew about the supervision of sedated patients. Nurses showed poor knowledge of the length of usage of the same transfusion system for red blood cells, labelling, and transfusion administration in febrile patients. Nurses with higher education and longer working experience had significantly better outcomes (p = 0.000) on the knowledge test. Continuous education of ICU nurses on safe transfusion usage is recommended.

Midwifery Students' Knowledge and Perceptions of a Midwifery-Led Model of Care in North Karnataka, India

OBJECTIVE

To assess the knowledge and perceptions of midwifery students regarding a midwifery-led model of care.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING

A nursing college in North Karnataka, India. The midwifery-led care model is a relatively new concept in India. In 2018, guidelines on midwifery services in India were released during the Partners Forum held in New Delhi as the initiation of the model and with the support of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The initiative began with the training of nurse practitioners in midwifery and is progressing.

PARTICIPANTS

Final-year diploma and bachelor's degree students.

METHODS

Participants completed an online survey, which consisted of a 20-item questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale to collect their knowledge and perceptions of the midwifery-led model of care. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the knowledge and perceptions of the students, including the mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage. Chi-square analysis and the Pearson's correlation coefficient were used to assess relationships between variables of interest.

RESULTS

Among the 165 participants, 85.5% (n = 141) had a poor level of knowledge of the midwifery-led care model, and only 14.5% (n = 24) showed average knowledge, with none possessing adequate knowledge. Notably, gender was significantly associated with knowledge (p < .05), with female participants demonstrating lower knowledge levels compared to male participants. A substantial portion (76.4%, n = 126) had a negative perception of the midwifery-led care model, 23.6% (n = 39) had a neutral perception, and none had a positive perception. There was no significant correlation between students' knowledge and perceptions of the midwifery-led model of care.

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that there is an urgent need for awareness, knowledge, and educational initiatives to help nursing students in India better comprehend the midwifery-led model of care and to strengthen the midwifery training in nursing colleges.

Prevalence of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antimicrobial resistance in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

One of the main threats to public health today is antibiotic resistance. This resistance leads to the persistence of infections in the body. It poses an increased risk of transmission to humans and animals through various routes, such as food, water, and the environment.

Objectives

This study aimed to ascertain the overall prevalence of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antimicrobial resistance in Africa.

Methods

A systematic review and meta-analysis of published and unpublished studies was conducted in Africa according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Searches were conducted using appropriate search terms in PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, African Journals Online, and the Cochrane Library. Data were extracted using Microsoft Excel, and STATA version 14 was used for analysis. Publication bias was checked by funnel plot, Egger, and Begg regression tests. A p-value of 0.05 was regarded to indicate potential publication bias. Using I2 statistics, the heterogeneity of the studies was evaluated. Using forest plots, the random effect model was used to present the pooled prevalence with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of meta-analysis.

Results

This review included 39 studies, with 18,769 study participants. Among these 39 studies, 38 were on knowledge assessment, 28 on attitude assessment, and 25 on good practice assessment towards antimicrobial resistances. The overall pooled prevalence level of knowledge regarding antimicrobial resistance in Africa was 55.33% (95% CI: 47.48, 63.18). The overall pooled prevalence of positive attitudes toward antimicrobial resistance in Africa was 46.93% (95% CI: 35.10, 58.76), and the overall pooled prevalence of good practice of antimicrobial resistance in Africa was 51.05% (95% CI: 45.24, 56.87). In addition, sub-group statistical analysis was performed in this meta-analysis, stratified by population sub-region and study design types.

Conclusion

In Africa, the pooled prevalence of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antimicrobial drug resistance among different groups, including the general population, patients, tertiary school students, healthcare workers, and animal owners was found to be low level. Therefore, it is imperative to enhance the education and training programs regarding antibiotic resistance for various groups including the general public, patients, students, healthcare workers, and individuals responsible for the well-being of animals.

Nursing experiences and knowledge of paediatric delirium: Analysing knowledge-practice gaps

BACKGROUND

Delirium commonly occurs in paediatric patients with acute critical illness and negatively affects clinical outcomes. Variations in delirium knowledge levels and its management have been noted among nurses.

AIMS

This study investigated nurses' experiences and knowledge levels regarding paediatric delirium. Additionally, we aimed to assess the gap between knowledge levels and practical experiences with paediatric delirium.

STUDY DESIGN

This cross-sectional descriptive study conveniently sampled paediatric nurses from a university hospital in South Korea between September 2022 and March 2023. Nursing experiences with paediatric delirium and delirium knowledge levels were measured using structured survey questionnaires. Delirium knowledge was scored 0 to 47, and higher scores indicated higher levels of delirium-related knowledge. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and presented as mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage.

RESULTS

A total of 127 paediatric nurses participated in this study; 40.2% had experience with 1-5 delirium cases in the previous year, and 86.6% (n = 110) had never used assessment tools for paediatric delirium assessment. The mean total delirium knowledge score was 34.45 ± 5.4; the mean scores of knowledge regarding aetiology, signs and symptoms and nursing management of delirium were 8.93 ± 1.31, 13.24 ± 2.81 and 12.3 ± 2.7, respectively. Interventions associated with a lower level of delirium-related knowledge and a lower performance rate included avoiding restraint use and maintaining hydration and electrolyte levels. Interventions associated with a higher level of delirium-related knowledge but a lower rate of performance comprised providing orientation, offering emotional support, allowing participants to stay with family members and administering medications to manage delirium.

CONCLUSIONS

Although nurses working in paediatric units exhibited high rate of delirium nursing care, there was the gap between their delirium-related knowledge and practice. Nurses need to be aware of the insufficient part of delirium care, and paediatric delirium education should be reinforced.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Preventing, assessing and systematically managing paediatric delirium is crucial, and considering the study results, delirium education among nurses is needed.

Does coping style mediate the relationship between knowledge and psychosocial outcomes in women with atrial fibrillation?

Introduction

In patients affected by atrial fibrillation (AF) disease-specific knowledge and coping style may be associated with psychosocial well-being. This study aimed to determine if coping style (problem-focused, emotion-focused, avoidance-focused) mediated the relationship between patient knowledge and three psychosocial outcomes (anxiety, depression and life satisfaction).

Methods

In 2021 a total of 188 women with reported AF, and ages ranging from 18 to 83 years (mean 48.7, sd 15.5 years), completed an online questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic, clinical and AF knowledge questions and psychosocial instruments (Anxiety and depression, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HADS) scale; life satisfaction, Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS); and coping style (Brief COPE). Using Jamovi statistical software three individual mediational models (for anxiety, depression and life satisfaction) were constructed assessing the direct and indirect relationships between knowledge, coping style and each psychosocial outcome. Age was a covariate in each model.

Results

The mediation analyses demonstrated significant direct negative associations between AF knowledge and HADS anxiety and depression and positive associations with SWLS. There were also direct associations between each of the three coping styles and the three psychosocial outcomes. There were significant indirect effects of coping style between AF knowledge and each of the three outcomes confirming partial mediation effects.

Discussion

These findings highlight the crucial role of coping style in mediating the association between AF knowledge and psychosocial outcomes. As such, interventions aimed at increasing patient knowledge of AF may be more effective if adaptive problem-solving coping strategies are also demonstrated to these patients. Additionally, modification of maladaptive coping strategies as part of the psychological management of patients with AF is highly recommended.

Assessing Students' Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding the Risks and Prevention of Consanguineous Marriage: A Cross-Sectional Online Survey

Background

Several studies indicate a correlation between consanguinity and genetic disorders, congenital malformations, harm to reproductive health, and increased child mortality.

Objective

To assess students' knowledge and attitudes about risks and prevention of consanguineous marriage.

Methods

Demographic details of the participants and data on knowledge and attitudes concerning the risks and prevention of consanguineous marriage were obtained using an online self-administered questionnaire. The factors associated with good knowledge and attitude toward consanguineous marriage were investigated by logistic regression analysis.

Results

A total of 667 participants enrolled in the study. The average knowledge score about consanguineous marriage risk and prevention was 78.6% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) [77.3, 79.8], and the average attitude was 79.7% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) [79, 80.6]. A better knowledge score was observed in older participants (OR 1.01; 95% CI 1.004-1.024), females (OR 1.69; 95% CI 1.48-1.94), participants with parental history of consanguinity (OR 1.33; 95% CI 1.17-1.52), participants with family history of consanguineous marriage (OR 5.18; 95% CI 2.19-7.10), and participants with family history of inherited disease (OR 1.52; 95% CI 1.25-1.86).

Conclusion

In general, the overall level of knowledge and attitudes toward consanguineous marriage risk and prevention was good among university students. To efficiently control and manage the adverse health impacts associated with consanguineous marriage, there is an urgent need to develop and implement evidence-based counseling and screening programs for consanguineous marriage that would significantly reduce the number of at-risk marriages.

Analysis of Self-Care Activities in Type 2 Diabetes in Brazil: Protocol for a Scoping Review

BACKGROUND

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that is growing worldwide. It is estimated that 15.7 million people aged between 20 and 79 years live with diabetes in Brazil, and the majority of cases are type 2 diabetes (T2D). To successfully manage diabetes, the patient needs to develop self-care activities. However, there is limited understanding of what self-care activities are performed by people with T2D in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to identify and map studies that evaluate self-care activities in T2D in Brazil.

METHODS

This is a scoping review protocol structured according to the methodological guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Six databases and gray literature were used. The process of searching, identifying, and evaluating the papers was carried out by 2 independent reviewers, guided by the assumptions established by the Joanna Briggs Institute. We sought to answer the following guiding question: How are self-care activities for people with T2D evaluated in Brazil? We included papers and publications in any language, from public and private domains, and with different methodological approaches.

RESULTS

Initial database searches produced a total of 681 results. These papers will be critically analyzed, and relevant information will be extracted. Quantitative and qualitative results of the papers reviewed will be presented to respond to the study's objective. We intend to publish the scoping review in the first half of 2024.

CONCLUSIONS

The protocol for this scoping review will evaluate the main self-care activities carried out by adults and older people with T2D in Brazil. The results may help identify knowledge gaps and contribute to future research and diabetes education interventions.
