Instantaneous Q10 of night-time leaf respiratory CO2 efflux - measurement and analytical protocol considerations

The temperature sensitivity (e.g. Q10) of night-time leaf respiratory CO2 efflux (RCO2) is a fundamental aspect of leaf physiology. The Q10 typically exhibits a dependence on measurement temperature, and it is speculated that this is due to temperature-dependent shifts in the relative control of leaf RCO2. Two decades ago, a review hypothesized that this mechanistically caused change in values of Q10 is predictable across plant taxa and biomes. Here, we discuss the most appropriate measuring protocol among existing data and for future data collection, to form the foundation for a future mechanistic understanding of Q10 of leaf RCO2 at different temperature ranges. We do this primarily via a review of existing literature on Q10 of night-time RCO2 and only supplement to a lesser degree with own original data. Based on mechanistic considerations, we encourage that instantaneous Q10 of leaf RCO2 to represent night-time should be measured: only at night-time; only in response to short-term narrow temperature variation (e.g. max. 10°C) to represent a given midpoint temperature at a time; in response to as many temperatures as possible within the chosen temperature range; and on still attached leaves.

The power threat meaning framework 5 years on - A scoping review of the emergent empirical literature

Since its release the Power Threat Meaning Framework (PTMF) has received considerable interest and uptake. However, there have not yet been any attempts to review the scope of this emergent literature. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesize: (1) all empirical research which utilized the PTMF in their methodologies, (2) the characteristics of these studies, (3) the different ways in which these studies utilized the PTMF, and (4) the key findings of these studies. This review was conducted in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) scoping review extension (PRISMA-ScR). Following systematic searches of academic databases and grey literature, 17 studies meeting eligibility criteria were included. These papers were subject to critical appraisal, data charting, and narrative synthesis. This review identified four uses of the PTMF: (1) PTMF-informed data collection, (2) PTMF-informed data analysis, (3) Experiences of/views on the PTMF, and (4) PTMF-informed psychological practices. This evidence-base demonstrated the merits of utilizing the PTMF across a range of disciplines, settings, and populations. This heterogeneity also presents challenges for evidence synthesis. Implications for research (e.g. importance of the coherent and consistent approach to research) and practice/policy (e.g. professional training, collaboration, service-level barriers) are considered.

A systematic review exploring healthcare professionals' perceptions of take-home naloxone dispensing in acute care areas

AIMS

To explore healthcare professionals' perceptions and experiences of take-home naloxone initiatives in acute care settings to gain an understanding of issues facilitating or impeding dispensing.

DESIGN

Systematic literature review.

DATA SOURCES

Cochrane, MEDLINE and CINAHL were searched from 15/03/2021 to 18/03/2021, with a follow-up search performed via PubMed on 22/03/2021. The years 2011 to 2021 were included in the search.

REVIEW METHODS

A systematic literature review focused on qualitative studies and quantitative survey designs. Synthesis without meta-analysis was undertaken using a thematic analysis approach.

RESULTS

Seven articles from the United States of America (5), Australia (1) and Canada (1) with 750 participants were included in the review. Results indicate ongoing stigma towards people who use drugs with preconceived moral concerns regarding take-home naloxone. There was confusion regarding roles and responsibilities in take-home naloxone dispensing and patient education. Similarly, there was a lack of clarity over logistical and financial issues.

CONCLUSION

Take-home naloxone is a vital harm reduction initiative. However, barriers exist that prevent the optimum implementation of these initiatives.

IMPACT

What is already known: Deaths due to opioid overdose are a global health concern, with take-home naloxone emerging as a key harm reduction scheme. Globally, less than 10% of people who use drugs have access to treatment initiatives, including take-home naloxone. An optimum point of distribution of take-home naloxone is post-acute hospital care.

WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS

There is role confusion regarding responsibility for the provision of take-home naloxone and patient education. This is exacerbated by inconsistent provision of training and education for healthcare professionals. Logistical or financial concerns are common and moral issues are prevalent with some healthcare professionals questioning the ethics of providing take-home naloxone. Stigma towards people who use drugs remains evident in some acute care areas which may impact the use of this intervention. Implications for practice/policy: Further primary research should examine what training and education methods are effective in improving the distribution of take-home naloxone in acute care. Education should focus on reduction of stigma towards people who use drugs to improve the distribution of take-home naloxone. Standardized care guidelines may ensure interventions are offered equally and take-home naloxone 'champions' could drive initiatives forward, with support from harm reduction specialists.

A Review of Human Performance Models for Prediction of Driver Behavior and Interactions With In-Vehicle Technology

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the use of human performance modeling (HPM) approach for prediction of driver behavior and interactions with in-vehicle technology.

BACKGROUND

HPM has been applied in numerous human factors domains such as surface transportation as it can quantify and predict human performance; however, there has been no integrated literature review for predicting driver behavior and interactions with in-vehicle technology in terms of the characteristics of methods used and variables explored.

METHOD

A systematic literature review was conducted using Compendex, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. As a result, 100 studies met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed by the authors. Model characteristics and variables were summarized to identify the research gaps and to provide a lookup table to select an appropriate method.

RESULTS

The findings provided information on how to select an appropriate HPM based on a combination of independent and dependent variables. The review also summarized the characteristics, limitations, applications, modeling tools, and theoretical bases of the major HPMs.

CONCLUSION

The study provided a summary of state-of-the-art on the use of HPM to model driver behavior and use of in-vehicle technology. We provided a table that can assist researchers to find an appropriate modeling approach based on the study independent and dependent variables.

APPLICATION

The findings of this study can facilitate the use of HPM in surface transportation and reduce the learning time for researchers especially those with limited modeling background.

A Systematic Review of Neurophysiology-Based Localization Techniques Used in Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery of the Subthalamic Nucleus

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review is conducted to identify, compare, and analyze neurophysiological feature selection, extraction, and classification to provide a comprehensive reference on neurophysiology-based subthalamic nucleus (STN) localization.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The review was carried out using the methods and guidelines of the Kitchenham systematic review and provides an in-depth analysis on methods proposed on STN localization discussed in the literature between 2000 and 2021. Three research questions were formulated, and 115 publications were identified to answer the questions.

RESULTS

The three research questions formulated are answered using the literature found on the respective topics. This review discussed the technologies used in past research, and the performance of the state-of-the-art techniques is also reviewed.

CONCLUSION

This systematic review provides a comprehensive reference on neurophysiology-based STN localization by reviewing the research questions other new researchers may also have.

The impact of digital technology use on nurses' professional identity and relations of power: a literature review

AIM

This study seeks to review how the use of digital technologies in clinical nursing affects nurses' professional identity and the relations of power within clinical environments.

DESIGN

Literature review.

DATA SOURCES

PubMed and CINAHL databases were searched in April 2023.

METHODS

We screened 874 studies in English and German, of which 15 were included in our final synthesis reflecting the scientific discourse from 1992 until 2023.

RESULTS

Our review revealed relevant effects of digital technologies on nurses' professional identity and power relations. Few studies cover outcomes relating to identity, such as moral agency or nurses' autonomy. Most studies describe negative impacts of technology on professional identity, for example, creating a barrier between nurses and patients leading to decreased empathetic interaction. Regarding power relations, technologically skilled nurses can yield power over colleagues and patients, while depending on technology. The investigation of these effects is underrepresented.

CONCLUSION

Our review presents insights into the relation between technology and nurses' professional identity and prevalent power relations. For future studies, dedicated and critical investigations of digital technologies' impact on the formation of professional identity in nursing are required.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION

Nurses' professional identity may be altered by digital technologies used in clinical care. Nurses, who are aware of the potential effects of digitized work environments, can reflect on the relationship of technology and the nursing profession.

IMPACT

The use of digital technology might lead to a decrease in nurses' moral agency and competence to shape patient-centred care. Digital technologies seem to become an essential measure for nurses to wield power over patients and colleagues, whilst being a control mechanism. Our work encourages nurses to actively shape digital care.

Understanding strategies that foster nurses to act as clinical leaders in hospitals: A realist review

AIM

To identify strategies that develop clinical nursing leadership competencies among staff nurses, and to explain the contextual elements and mechanisms that underpin the development of clinical nursing leadership competencies.

DESIGN

Realist review according to the Realist and Meta-narrative Evidence Syntheses-Evolving Standards (RAMESES).

DATA SOURCES

PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Wiley Online Library, PsycInfo and ProQuest were searched from January 2000 until October 2022.

REVIEW METHODS

Three iterative phases: (1) development of initial programme theory, (2) structured searches for relevant published and grey literature and (3) data synthesis and interpretation by researchers and theory triangulation, and discussions within the research group.

RESULTS

Multiple context-mechanism-outcome configurations were extracted from 10 reports that explain how, under what circumstances and why strategies can facilitate (or discourage) staff nurses to act as clinical leaders. Reports were both quantitative and qualitative in design, originating from English-speaking countries only.

CONCLUSIONS

A logic model was developed and suggests four contexts and five mechanisms underlying the development of clinical nursing leadership. Growth in clinical nursing leadership was mainly experienced through experiential learning, which was enhanced by a supportive relationship with a coach or mentor, the use of reflective practices and modelling from other leaders. Furthermore, a supportive work environment triggers ownership, confidence and motivation, and thereby growth in clinical nursing leadership competencies.

IMPACT

Fostering competencies for clinical leadership among staff nurses requires multifaceted strategies. Strategies are successful if, and only if, they combine learning by doing, by knowing and by observing, and establish a responsive work environment. Hospital policy should ensure that staff nurses have access to reciprocal relationships with role models or a coach. In order to grow as clinical nurse leader, ownership and self-reflection on own leadership behaviour need to be facilitated.

Racial Disparities in Head and Neck Cancer: It's Not Just About Access

OBJECTIVE

Medical literature identifies stark racial disparities in head and neck cancer (HNC) in the United States, primarily between non-Hispanic white (NHW) and non-Hispanic black (NHB) populations. The etiology of this disparity is often attributed to inequitable access to health care and socioeconomic status (SES). However, other contributors have been reported. We performed a systematic review to better understand the multifactorial landscape driving racial disparities in HNC.

DATA SOURCES

A systematic review was conducted in Covidence following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Guidelines. A search of PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL for literature published through November 2022 evaluating racial disparities in HNC identified 2309 publications.

REVIEW METHODS

Full texts were screened by 2 authors independently, and inconsistencies were resolved by consensus. Three hundred forty publications were ultimately selected and categorized into themes including disparities in access/SES, treatment, lifestyle, and biology. Racial groups examined included NHB and NHW patients but also included Hispanic, Native American, and Asian/Pacific Islander patients to a lesser extent.

RESULTS

Of the 340 articles, 192 focused on themes of access/SES, including access to high-quality hospitals, insurance coverage, and transportation contributing to disparate HNC outcomes. Additional themes discussed in 148 articles included incongruities in surgical recommendations, tobacco/alcohol use, human papillomavirus-associated malignancies, and race-informed silencing of tumor suppressor genes.

CONCLUSION

Differential access to care plays a significant role in racial disparities in HNC, disproportionately affecting NHB populations. However, there are other significant themes driving racial disparities. Future studies should focus on providing equitable access to care while also addressing these additional sources of disparities in HNC.

Diverse elements comprising studies of peer support complicate evidence synthesis

BACKGROUND

Innovative approaches to care, such as peer support, are needed to address the substantial and frequently unmet needs of people with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. Although peer support services continue to expand in mental healthcare, findings of effectiveness from systematic reviews are mixed. However, the studies evaluated in these reviews consisted of diverse elements which the review methods neglected to consider.

AIMS

This review aims to demonstrate the substantial diversity in intervention components and measured outcomes among studies of peer support and lay the groundwork for more focused reviews of individual intervention components.

METHODS

As part of a realist review of the literature, here we synthesize evidence in a way that examines the substantial diversity in intervention components and measured outcomes comprising studies of peer support.

RESULTS

Seven categories of outcomes were represented, including recovery, symptoms and functioning, and care utilization. Importantly, seven distinct intervention components were represented in 26 studies: "being there," assistance in self-management, linkage to clinical care and community resources, social and emotional support, ongoing support, explicit utilization of shared lived experience or peer support values, and systems advocacy. Reflecting diversity in approaches, no study reported all intervention components, and no component was found among all studies.

IMPLICATIONS

Peer support services constitute a category of intervention approaches far too varied to evaluate as a single entity. Results suggest intervention components deserving more focused research, including assistance in self-management, "being there," and explicit utilization of shared lived experience or peer support values.

PRISMA/PROSPERO

As this article reports results from a realist review of the literature, we did not follow the PRISMA guidance which is suitable for systematic reviews. We did follow the Realist and Meta-narrative Evidence Syntheses: Evolving Standards (RAMESES) guidelines.This review was not registered on PROSPERO as it is not a systematic review.

Is there evidence for factorial invariance of the COVID Stress Scales? an analysis of North American and cross-cultural populations

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental health of more citizens globally than any previous modern viral outbreak. In response to the psychological challenges associated with COVID-19, the COVID Stress Scales (CSS) were developed to assess the presence and severity of COVID-related distress. The initial North American validation study of the CSS identified that the scale comprised five factors: danger and contamination fears, fear of socioeconomic consequences, xenophobia, checking and reassurance seeking, and traumatic stress symptoms. The CSS have since been validated across a multitude of international populations. However, findings support a five- and six-factor model. Methodological issues make interpreting most studies supporting a five-factor model challenging. The purpose of this study was to re-evaluate the factor structure of the CSS using data from North American samples, to assess for potential factorial invariance, and compare these results to cross-cultural findings. Multiple confirmatory factor analyses (mCFA) were conducted across 28 different groups (e.g., age, ethnicity/race, sex) from two large independent North American samples from 2020 (n = 6827) and 2021 (n = 5787), assessing the fit indices of the five-, six-, and alternative-factor model of the CSS. The current results provide evidence for factorial invariance of the six-factor model of the CSS across different North American demographics and highlight potential challenges in interpreting the results of studies that have supported a five-factor model of the CSS.

Effects of electroacupuncture on postoperative cognitive dysfunction and its underlying mechanisms: a literature review of rodent studies

With the aging of the population, the health of the elderly has become increasingly important. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common neurological complication in elderly patients following general anesthesia or surgery. It is characterized by cognitive decline that may persist for weeks, months, or even longer. Electroacupuncture (EA), a novel therapy that combines physical nerve stimulation with acupuncture treatment from traditional Chinese medicine, holds potential as a therapeutic intervention for preventing and treating POCD, particularly in elderly patients. Although the beneficial effects of EA on POCD have been explored in preclinical and clinical studies, the reliability of EA is limited by methodological shortcomings, and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Therefore, we have synthesized existing evidence and proposed potential biological mechanisms underlying the effects of EA on neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, autophagy, the microbiota-gut-brain axis, and epigenetic modification. This review summarizes recent advances in EA and POCD, provides a theoretical foundation, explores potential molecular mechanisms for the prevention and treatment of POCD, and offers a basis for conducting relevant clinical trials.

The use of ultrasonography in education for undergraduate nursing students: A literature review

AIM

The incorporation of ultrasonography into nursing practice is becoming more common, but how ultrasonography is used or applied in nursing student education is still unclear. This study aimed to review and synthesize relevant literature on the use of ultrasonography in education for undergraduate nursing students.

METHODS

An electronic literature search was conducted in June 2022 (updated in June 2023) using MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, and Ichushi-Web databases. Two researchers independently screened/assessed the eligibility of the studies, synthesized extracted data using a narrative synthesis (due to anticipated heterogeneity across studies), and evaluated the methodological quality of quantitative studies using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument.

RESULTS

Thirteen peer-reviewed articles were included in the review. All of the studies were conducted in high-income countries, and the majority of them employed an uncontrolled single-group design. Ultrasonography was used mainly for visualizing the vascular system to improve students' puncture skills, but it was also used with various other applications. The included studies were predominantly of moderate quality and heterogeneous, but all of them reported at least some benefits in nursing student education, such as enhancing knowledge and understanding of subcutaneous anatomical structures, and improving confidence in and/or skills of venipuncture and other visualization/assessment methods.

CONCLUSIONS

This review provides a broad perspective and highlights the potential use of ultrasonography in education for undergraduate nursing students. Further research is needed to develop standardized teaching methods/curriculum and competency assessments in order to ensure minimum competency standards for students and to improve clinical outcomes for patients.

Early respiratory interventional therapy combined with antifungal agent for endobronchial cryptococcosis: A case report and literature review

RATIONALE

Cryptococcosis presenting as endobronchial obstruction and lung collapse is an extremely rare occurrence. While these patients were treated with antifungal agents, unfortunately, half of them showed a suboptimal response.

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 45-year-old immunocompetent male was admitted to the hospital due to a cough, yellow phlegm, and dyspnea persisting for 5 months. Chest computer tomography revealed a mass in the right main bronchus accompanied by right lower lobe atelectasis.

DIAGNOSES

Endobronchial cryptococcosis presenting as endobronchial obstruction and lung collapse.

INTERVENTIONS

Early rigid bronchoscopic therapy was performed to resect endobronchial obstruction, which combined with antifungal agent.

OUTCOMES

The patient recovered well with completely clinical and radiologic resolution at 1 year follow-up.

LESSONS

This case provides a good example of successful utilization of the early respiratory interventional therapy combined with antifungal agent in obstructive endobronchial cryptococcosis.

Designing Chinese hospital emergency departments to leverage artificial intelligence-a systematic literature review on the challenges and opportunities

Artificial intelligence (AI) has witnessed rapid advances in the healthcare domain in recent years, especially in the emergency field, where AI is likely to radically reshape medical service delivery. Although AI has substantial potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and operational efficiency in hospitals, research on its applications in Emergency Department building design remains relatively scarce. Therefore, this study aims to investigate Emergency Department facility design by identifying the challenges and opportunities of using AI. Two systematic literature reviews are combined, one in AI and the other in sensors, to explore their potential application to support decision-making, resource optimisation and patient monitoring. These reviews have then informed a discussion on integrating AI sensors in contemporary Emergency Department designs for use in China to support the evidence base on resuscitation units, emergency operating rooms and Emergency Department Intensive Care Unit (ED-ICU) design. We hope to inform the strategic implementation of AI sensors and how they might transform Emergency Department design to support medical staff and enhance the patient experience.

Reducing Loneliness and Social Isolation of Older Adults Through Voice Assistants: Literature Review and Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Loneliness and social isolation are major public health concerns for older adults, with severe mental and physical health consequences. New technologies may have a great impact in providing support to the daily lives of older adults and addressing the many challenges they face. In this scenario, technologies based on voice assistants (VAs) are of great interest and potential benefit in reducing loneliness and social isolation in this population, because they could overcome existing barriers with other digital technologies through easier and more natural human-computer interaction.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to investigate the use of VAs to reduce loneliness and social isolation of older adults by performing a systematic literature review and a bibliometric cluster mapping analysis.

METHODS

We searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases for articles that were published in the last 6 years, related to the following main topics: voice interface, VA, older adults, isolation, and loneliness. A total of 40 articles were found, of which 16 (40%) were included in this review. The included articles were then assessed through a qualitative scoring method and summarized. Finally, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer software (Leiden University's Centre for Science and Technology Studies).

RESULTS

Of the 16 articles included in the review, only 2 (13%) were considered of poor methodological quality, whereas 9 (56%) were of medium quality and 5 (31%) were of high quality. Finally, through bibliometric analysis, 221 keywords were extracted, of which 36 (16%) were selected. The most important keywords, by number of occurrences and by total link strength; results of the analysis with the Association Strength normalization method; and default values were then presented. The final bibliometric network consisted of 36 selected keywords, which were grouped into 3 clusters related to 3 main topics (ie, VA use for social isolation among older adults, the significance of age in the context of loneliness, and the impact of sex factors on well-being). For most of the selected articles, the effect of VA on social isolation and loneliness of older adults was a minor theme. However, more investigations were done on user experience, obtaining preliminary positive results.

CONCLUSIONS

Most articles on the use of VAs by older adults to reduce social isolation and loneliness focus on usability, acceptability, or user experience. Nevertheless, studies directly addressing the impact that using a VA has on the social isolation and loneliness of older adults find positive and promising results and provide important information for future research, interventions, and policy development in the field of geriatric care and technology.

The Potential of Exercise on Lifestyle and Skin Function: Narrative Review

BACKGROUND

The skin is an important organ of the human body and has moisturizing and barrier functions. Factors such as sunlight and lifestyle significantly affect these skin functions, with sunlight being extremely damaging. The effects of lifestyle habits such as smoking, diet, and sleep have been studied extensively. It has been found that smoking increases the risk of wrinkles, while excessive fat and sugar intake leads to skin aging. Lack of sleep and stress are also dangerous for the skin's barrier function. In recent years, the impact of exercise habits on skin function has been a focus of study. Regular exercise is associated with increased blood flow to the skin, elevated skin temperature, and improved skin moisture. Furthermore, it has been shown to improve skin structure and rejuvenate its appearance, possibly through promoting mitochondrial biosynthesis and affecting hormone secretion. Further research is needed to understand the effects of different amounts and content of exercise on the skin.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to briefly summarize the relationship between lifestyle and skin function and the mechanisms that have been elucidated so far and introduce the expected effects of exercise on skin function.

METHODS

We conducted a review of the literature using PubMed and Google Scholar repositories for relevant literature published between 2000 and 2022 with the following keywords: exercise, skin, and life habits.

RESULTS

Exercise augments the total spectrum power density of cutaneous blood perfusion by a factor of approximately 8, and vasodilation demonstrates an enhancement of approximately 1.5-fold. Regular exercise can also mitigate age-related skin changes by promoting mitochondrial biosynthesis. However, not all exercise impacts are positive; for instance, swimming in chlorinated pools may harm the skin barrier function. Hence, the exercise environment should be considered for its potential effects on the skin.

CONCLUSIONS

This review demonstrates that exercise can potentially enhance skin function retention.

Using social media to recruit research participants: a literature review

BACKGROUND

It may be challenging for researchers to recruit enough participants to have a diverse and representative sample for their studies. Usual recruitment methods that were historically effective can be difficult to use because of high costs, time constraints and geographical limitations. Social media is a low-cost, time-saving alternative.

AIM

To summarise the benefits and challenges of using social media for recruitment.

DISCUSSION

This article provides an overview of social media. It considers the advantages of social media for recruitment, including its cost-effectiveness, accessibility, speed and potential exposure for researchers. It also discusses the challenges of using social media for recruitment, including ethical ambiguity, homogenous sampling and questionable validity of information gathered.

CONCLUSION

Using social media for research saves time and reduces costs, increasing access to hard-to-reach populations and the reach of recruitment efforts.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Options for researchers wishing to use social media for study recruitment are outlined, as are strategies for managing some of the challenges involved in this recruitment method.

Quality of life of family carers of people living with dementia: review of systematic reviews of observational and intervention studies

INTRODUCTION

Family members are the primary source of support for the growing number of people living with dementia (PLWD) worldwide. However, caring for a person living with dementia can have detrimental impacts on the carer quality of life (QoL). This review of systematic reviews explored the factors associated with the QoL of family carers of PLWD and interventions aimed at improving their QoL.

SOURCES OF DATA

Several health-related databases (PUBMED, Psychinfo, Google Scholar and COCHRANE) were consulted in November 2022. Nineteen systematic reviews were included, and their methodological quality was assessed via AMSTAR-2.

AREAS OF AGREEMENT

Better carer physical and mental health, provision of formal support, relationship quality between carers and PLWD, as well as positive psychological traits were associated with better carer QoL. There is no one-size-fits-all intervention that can improve the QoL of all carers, but promising results were found in most of the interventions.

AREAS OF CONTROVERSY

There is inconsistency in evidence on the association between the carer age and QoL. The use of a wide range of QoL measures, particularly generic QoL scales, has contributed to inconsistencies when comparing the efficacy of interventions.

GROWING POINTS

Evidence suggests the need for a person-centred approach to improving carer QoL, considering individual and contextual needs as well as the continuum and progressive nature of dementia care.

TIMELY AREAS FOR DEVELOPING RESEARCH

Future research should be focused on understanding how to best implement and measure person-centred care approaches to carer QoL, including cost-effectiveness. More qualitative studies are necessary to explore carer negative and positive experiences of QoL.

Case Report: Minocycline-induced drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms syndrome: a case report and literature review

Minocycline is a tetracycline commonly used for several dermatological diseases. Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a rare but severe adverse event which can be caused by minocycline. An 18-year-old male patient developed fever, acute rash, pharyngeal pain, lymphadenopathy, hematologic abnormalities, increased creatinine level, elevated liver enzyme levels, and splenomegaly 4 weeks after the oral treatment of minocycline, 100 mg daily, for acne. Once diagnosed with DRESS syndrome, intravenous methylprednisolone was applied and his clinical manifestations and laboratory results remarkably improved. Then, a total of 13 DRESS syndrome cases induced by minocycline were reviewed and their clinical characteristics were summarized. In these cases, only two patient (15.4%) was present with pharynx involved. In conclusion, we reported a rare minocycline-induced DRESS syndrome who developed fever, eosinophilia, acute rash, pharyngitis, lymphadenopathy, acute kidney injury, hepatitis, and splenomegaly. Our report provides detailed clinical features of minocycline-induced DRESS syndrome, which helps us further understand this severe adverse event.

Machine Learning-Based Approach for Identifying Research Gaps: COVID-19 as a Case Study

BACKGROUND

Research gaps refer to unanswered questions in the existing body of knowledge, either due to a lack of studies or inconclusive results. Research gaps are essential starting points and motivation in scientific research. Traditional methods for identifying research gaps, such as literature reviews and expert opinions, can be time consuming, labor intensive, and prone to bias. They may also fall short when dealing with rapidly evolving or time-sensitive subjects. Thus, innovative scalable approaches are needed to identify research gaps, systematically assess the literature, and prioritize areas for further study in the topic of interest.

OBJECTIVE

In this paper, we propose a machine learning-based approach for identifying research gaps through the analysis of scientific literature. We used the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study.

METHODS

We conducted an analysis to identify research gaps in COVID-19 literature using the COVID-19 Open Research (CORD-19) data set, which comprises 1,121,433 papers related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our approach is based on the BERTopic topic modeling technique, which leverages transformers and class-based term frequency-inverse document frequency to create dense clusters allowing for easily interpretable topics. Our BERTopic-based approach involves 3 stages: embedding documents, clustering documents (dimension reduction and clustering), and representing topics (generating candidates and maximizing candidate relevance).

RESULTS

After applying the study selection criteria, we included 33,206 abstracts in the analysis of this study. The final list of research gaps identified 21 different areas, which were grouped into 6 principal topics. These topics were: "virus of COVID-19," "risk factors of COVID-19," "prevention of COVID-19," "treatment of COVID-19," "health care delivery during COVID-19," "and impact of COVID-19." The most prominent topic, observed in over half of the analyzed studies, was "the impact of COVID-19."

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed machine learning-based approach has the potential to identify research gaps in scientific literature. This study is not intended to replace individual literature research within a selected topic. Instead, it can serve as a guide to formulate precise literature search queries in specific areas associated with research questions that previous publications have earmarked for future exploration. Future research should leverage an up-to-date list of studies that are retrieved from the most common databases in the target area. When feasible, full texts or, at minimum, discussion sections should be analyzed rather than limiting their analysis to abstracts. Furthermore, future studies could evaluate more efficient modeling algorithms, especially those combining topic modeling with statistical uncertainty quantification, such as conformal prediction.

Systemic lupus erythematosus with chronic persistent intracranial hypertension: A case report

OBJECTIVE

The aim is to investigate the clinical characteristics of systemic lupus erythematosus with intracranial hypertension.

METHODS

The clinical characteristics of one case of systemic lupus erythematosus with chronic persistent intracranial hypertension were analyzed, and related literature was reviewed by searching Medline and Wanfang databases.

RESULTS

Intracranial hypertension in SLE patients may occur at the onset or during the course of the disease. Our patient was diagnosed with IH 3 years after the onset of SLE. Headache and papilledema were the most common symptoms of intracranial hypertension, followed by nausea or vomiting, vision changes, and cerebral palsy. Our patient had a headache and cranial hypertension that lasted for years, but no papilledema was found. Corticosteroid is currently the mainstay of the treatment of IIH in patients with SLE, and immunosuppressive agents, acetazolamide, intravenous mannitol and furosemide are also used. However, our patient did not respond to these treatments and presents the characteristics of chronic persistent intracranial hypertension.

CONCLUSION

Systemic lupus erythematosus with intracranial hypertension is a rare manifestation of SLE, which is not completely parallel to SLE activity. Headache and papilledema were the most common presenting symptoms. Different from previous reported cases, our patient had poor response to treatments, showing chronic and persistent characteristics.

Care relationship and interaction between patients and ambulance clinicians: A qualitative meta-synthesis from a person-centred perspective

BACKGROUND

Ambulance care is characterised by disaster medicine, traumatology and care for acute illnesses and accidents. The focus of ambulance care is clearly on medical care, whereas interpersonal interaction between patients and ambulance clinicians appears less prioritised. A patient within ambulance care needs to be listened to, be taken seriously, be treated with empathy and be seen as a unique person. These are fundamental to delivering Person-centred care.

AIM

The purpose is to describe how the care relationship and interaction between patients and ambulance clinicians in prehospital emergency care are described in the literature and how they can be interpreted from a person-centred perspective.

DATA SOURCES AND REVIEW METHODS

A qualitative meta-synthesis was used. Data collection was carried out with PubMed, CINAHL Plus and Web of Science in September-October 2022 and in August-September 2023. The first article searching applied a timeline 1990-2022 and the second applied a timeline 2022-2023. A total of 13 studies employing a qualitative approach were evaluated and included in the interpretive analysis.

RESULTS

Three themes were identified: A good care relationship, Decision-making and Hindrances to practising person-centred care in ambulance care. Trust, good communication and respect for patients' dignity were the most important parts of the good care relationship between patients and ambulance clinicians. Decision-making regarding the examination of patients, medical treatment and transport to the receiving care unit was one of the tasks that ambulance clinicians do independently but in cooperation with patients and family members. Person-centred care within ambulance care may be hindered due to environmental factors, attitudes and behaviour of ambulance clinicians and patient-related factors.

CONCLUSION

Many ambulance clinicians have already adopted Person-centred care, but several factors can hinder Person-centred care in interactions with patients. Although the results build on a limited number of studies, they indicate that person-centred care needs to be further developed and studied for high-quality ambulance care.

The Use of Thoracic Segmental Spinal Anaesthesia for Thoracoscopic Diaphragmatic Hernia Repair in an Adult With Cardiac Compromise

Morgagni hernias are uncommon diaphragmatic defects and are commonly found incidentally as a congenital defect. Acquired Morgagni hernias have been documented in the pediatric population, making them extremely uncommon. Thoracic segmental spinal anesthesia (TSSA) may be used as a successful substitute for general anesthesia, especially in cardiovascularly compromised patients like our patient who had heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), and this is one of the very few documented cases of acquired Morgagni hernia laparoscopic repair surgery done by this anesthesia method. An 80-year-old woman presented with a complaint of left lower chest and left upper quadrant pain. Acute coronary artery syndrome was ruled out. She underwent a coronary artery bypass graft in 2009, complicated two months later by mediastinitis, which is believed to be the cause of the acquired diaphragmatic defect in our patient. Chest and abdominal CT showed a large anterior Morgagni-type diaphragmatic hernia, in which the left hemithorax and anterior mediastinum were both occupied by a herniated transverse colon. Under regional anesthesia, which was done by injecting anesthesia in the spinal space between thoracic spinal vertebrae T8 and T9 and second injections in the epidural space at the level between thoracic epidural T9 and T10, which is neuraxial anesthesia. The repair of the diaphragmatic hernia was done by suturing the mesh into the proper position. We report the first known case of laparoscopic repair of a Morgagni hernia in an adult patient with HFrEF and other comorbidities.

Meaning of wellness in caring science based on Rodgers's evolutionary concept analysis

BACKGROUND

Wellness is a holistic, multidimensional, and process-oriented property on a continuum. It has been used interchangeably with and is undifferentiated from concepts such as health and well-being without an in-depth clarification of its theoretical foundations and a reflection on its meaning. The concept of wellness is frequently used, but its definition remains unclear.

AIM

To conceptually and theoretically explore the concept of wellness to contribute to a deeper understanding in caring science.

METHOD

Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis was applied to the theoretical investigation of data from publications of international origins. The focus was on antecedents, attributes, consequences, surrogate and related terms, and contextual references. A literature search was performed through a manual review of reference lists and an online search in CINAHL and PubMed via EBSCO, and in ProQuest. Abstracts were examined to identify relevant studies for further review. The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed papers in English; papers published in scientific journals using the surrogate terms 'wellness', 'health', 'health care', and 'health care and wellness'; and papers discussing and/or defining the concept of wellness. Twenty-six studies met the inclusion criteria.

RESULTS

Based on the findings from this concept analysis, a definition of wellness was developed: 'a holistic and multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well that goes beyond health'. Implications for nursing practice were correspondingly presented.

CONCLUSION

Wellness is defined as a holistic and comprehensive multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well, that goes beyond health. It calls attention by applying the salutogenic perspective to health promotion in caring science. It is strongly related to individual lifestyle and health behaviour and is frequently used interchangeably with health and well-being without an in-depth clarification of its theoretical foundation.

Automated data analysis of unstructured grey literature in health research: A mapping review

The amount of grey literature and 'softer' intelligence from social media or websites is vast. Given the long lead-times of producing high-quality peer-reviewed health information, this is causing a demand for new ways to provide prompt input for secondary research. To our knowledge, this is the first review of automated data extraction methods or tools for health-related grey literature and soft data, with a focus on (semi)automating horizon scans, health technology assessments (HTA), evidence maps, or other literature reviews. We searched six databases to cover both health- and computer-science literature. After deduplication, 10% of the search results were screened by two reviewers, the remainder was single-screened up to an estimated 95% sensitivity; screening was stopped early after screening an additional 1000 results with no new includes. All full texts were retrieved, screened, and extracted by a single reviewer and 10% were checked in duplicate. We included 84 papers covering automation for health-related social media, internet fora, news, patents, government agencies and charities, or trial registers. From each paper, we extracted data about important functionalities for users of the tool or method; information about the level of support and reliability; and about practical challenges and research gaps. Poor availability of code, data, and usable tools leads to low transparency regarding performance and duplication of work. Financial implications, scalability, integration into downstream workflows, and meaningful evaluations should be carefully planned before starting to develop a tool, given the vast amounts of data and opportunities those tools offer to expedite research.

Interprofessional clinical decision-making process in health: A scoping review

AIMS

To describe the key elements of the interprofessional decision-making process in health, based on published scientific studies. To describe the authors, reviews and subject matter of those publications.

DESIGN

Scoping review of the literature.

DATA SOURCES

MEDLINE, APA Psycinfo OpenGrey, Lissa and Cochrane databases were searched in December 2019 and January 2023.

REVIEW METHODS

References were considered eligible if they (i) were written in French or English, (ii) concerned health, (iii) studied a clinical decision-making process, (iv) were performed in an interprofessional context. 'PRISMA-scoping review' guidelines were respected. The eligible studies were analysed and classified by an inductive approach RESULTS: We identified 1429 sources of information, 145 of which were retained for the analysis. Based on these studies, we identified five key elements of interprofessional decision-making in health. The process was found to be influenced by group dynamics, the available information and consideration of the unique characteristics of the patient. An organizational framework and specific training favoured improvements in the process.

CONCLUSION

Decision-making can be based on a willingness of the healthcare organization to promote models based on more shared leadership and to work on professional roles and values. It also requires healthcare professionals trained in the entire continuum of collaborative practices, to meet the unique needs of each patient. Finally, it appears essential to favour the sharing of multiple sources of accessible and structured information. Tools for knowledge formalization should help to optimize interprofessional decision-making in health.

IMPACT

The quality of a team decision-making is critical to the quality of care. Interprofessional decision-making can be structured and improved through different levels of action. These improvements could benefit to patients and healthcare professionals in every settings of care involving care collaboration.

IMPACT STATEMENT

Interprofessional decision-making in health is an essential lever of quality of care, especially for the most complex patients which are a contemporary challenge. This scoping review article offers a synthesis of a large corpus of data published to date about the interprofessional clinical decision-making process in healthcare. It has the potential to provide a global vision, practical data and a list of references to facilitate the work of healthcare teams, organizations and teachers ready to initiate a change.

Updates on Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris: A Scoping Review

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare, inflammatory papulosquamous skin disease with unknown exact etiology. Historically, PRP has been challenging to diagnose, especially during the acute phase, and to treat, due to its unclear pathogenesis. To better inform clinical practice, a literature review was conducted employing a broad search strategy to capture PRP-related published studies between January 1, 2012 to October 31, 2022. Two hundred twenty-one studies were identified, which were categorized into 9 themes: (1) potential causes and triggering factors, (2) comorbidities, (3) diagnostic difficulties, (4) genetics, (5) clinical manifestations and laboratory values, (6) treatment, (7) treatment-related adverse events, (8) quality of life, and (9) other. COVID-19 infection, COVID-19 vaccination, and malignancy were the most commonly reported potential triggering factors. Misdiagnosis is very common during the early acute stages. Pathogenesis and genetic studies have further implicated caspase recruitment domain family member 14 (CARD14) mutations in the development of familial PRP (Type V) and have underlined the overlap between psoriasis and PRP. To date, there are currently no specific and validated scoring systems or tools to assess the severity of PRP. While large, randomized trials are still lacking, biologic agents remain the most effective therapy.

Behavioural outcomes of interprofessional education within clinical settings for health professional students: A systematic literature review

Interprofessional education facilitates collaborative practice, which promotes high-quality patient care and patient safety. Interprofessional education (IPE) experiences within clinical settings provide an opportunity for the development of interprofessional collaborative practice competence. The aim of this systematic review was to review the literature evaluating interprofessional education for health professional students within clinical settings and summarize the behavioral outcomes. Databases searched were PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Taylor & Francis Online, ERIC and PsycINFO. Full-text articles were independently screened by two reviewers and included if agreed. Outcomes were analyzed using Kirkpatrick's model modified for IPE. Studies with behavioral change outcomes were analyzed and synthesized using narrative methods. Included studies provided evidence that IPE experiences in clinical settings can enable students to develop and integrate interprofessional collaborative practice competencies, across diverse types of settings. Key tasks enabling students to achieve these learning outcomes included synchronous patient consultations, collaborative development of integrative health-care plans outside of patient consultations, and participation in socialization with health-care teams. There were limitations in the methodological design of the included studies, with limited use of comparator groups and validated tools, high usage of self-report data and serious risk of bias identified across all quantitative included studies. In conclusion, high-quality research designed to measure the construct of behavioral change is lacking. Such research could further investigate the key tasks in IPE experiences in clinical settings that are necessary for students to develop the range of required collaborative practice competencies and integrate these. This could provide clarification regarding if and how this could be achieved across different types of clinical placements.

Incidental pulmonary nodule management in Canada: exploring current state through a narrative literature review and expert interviews

Background and Objective

Incidental pulmonary nodules (IPNs) are common and increasingly detected with the overall rise of radiologic imaging. Effective IPN management is necessary to ensure lung cancer is not missed. This study aims to describe the current landscape of IPN management in Canada, understand barriers to optimal IPN management, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Methods

We performed a narrative literature review by searching biomedical electronic databases for relevant articles published between January 1, 2010, and November 22, 2023. To validate and complement the identified literature, we conducted structured interviews with multidisciplinary experts involved in the pathway of patients with IPNs across Canada. Interviews between December 2021 and May 2022 were audiovisual recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed.

Key Content and Findings

A total of 1,299 records were identified, of which 37 studies were included for analysis. Most studies were conducted in Canada and the United States and highlighted variability in radiology reporting of IPNs and patient management, and limited adherence to recommended follow-up imaging. Twenty experts were interviewed, including radiologists, respirologists, thoracic surgeons, primary care physicians, medical oncologists, and an epidemiologist. Three themes emerged from the interviews, supported by the literature, including: variability in radiology reporting of IPNs, suboptimal communication, and variability in guideline adherence and patient management.

Conclusions

Despite general awareness of guidelines, there is inconsistency and lack of standardization in the management of patients with IPNs in Canada. Multidisciplinary expert consensus is recommended to help overcome the communication and operational barriers to a safe and cost-effective approach to this common clinical issue.

Metabolic changes in fibroblast-like synoviocytes in rheumatoid arthritis: state of the art review

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) are important components of the synovial membrane. They can contribute to joint damage through crosstalk with inflammatory cells and direct actions on tissue damage pathways in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Recent evidence suggests that, compared with FLS in normal synovial tissue, FLS in RA synovial tissue exhibits significant differences in metabolism. Recent metabolomic studies have demonstrated that metabolic changes, including those in glucose, lipid, and amino acid metabolism, exist before synovitis onset. These changes may be a result of increased biosynthesis and energy requirements during the early phases of the disease. Activated T cells and some cytokines contribute to the conversion of FLS into cells with metabolic abnormalities and pro-inflammatory phenotypes. This conversion may be one of the potential mechanisms behind altered FLS metabolism. Targeting metabolism can inhibit FLS proliferation, providing relief to patients with RA. In this review, we aimed to summarize the evidence of metabolic changes in FLS in RA, analyze the mechanisms of these metabolic alterations, and assess their effect on RA phenotype. Finally, we aimed to summarize the advances and challenges faced in targeting FLS metabolism as a promising therapeutic strategy for RA in the future.

Psychosocial impacts of being nil-by-mouth as an adult: A scoping review

AIM

To map existing evidence and identify gaps in the literature concerning psychosocial impacts of being nil by mouth (NBM) as an adult.

DESIGN

A scoping review of the literature was undertaken using JBI guidance. A protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework (osf.io/43g9y). Reporting was guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR).

METHODS

A comprehensive search of six databases (CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, SCOPUS and Web of Science) was performed for studies published up to February 2023, with no restriction to study type. A scope of the grey literature was also undertaken. Two authors independently assessed eligibility and extracted data. Descriptive statistical analysis and narrative synthesis were used, and patient and public involvement included in funding discussions.

RESULTS

A total of 23 papers were included in the review, consisting of 14 primary studies (7 qualitative and 7 quantitative) and 9 grey literature. Both global psychological distress and distress specific to being NBM (thirst, missing food and drink) were reported. Caregivers also experience distress from their family member being NBM. Furthermore, social impacts were reported for both patient and caregiver, primarily social isolation and subsequent low mood.

CONCLUSION

Furthermore, research is needed to understand the prevalence of this population, how best to measure psychosocial impacts and to explore whether (and how) psychosocial impacts change over time. Advancement in this area would enable better service development to optimize care for this patient group. WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Eating and drinking provides more than nutrition and hydration. A wide range of conditions can lead to recommendations for no longer eating and drinking (nil by mouth). Being nil by mouth (NBM) for short periods such as pre-operative fasting causes distress; however, little is understood about impact on longer-term abstinence from eating and drinking. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS?: Psychosocial consequences of being nil by mouth (NBM)have been investigated by both quantitative and qualitative studies. Being NBM impacts both patients and caregivers in various psychosocial aspects, including distress and social isolation. Several gaps remain, however, regarding ways to measure psychosocial impact of being NBM.

Ceramic fragmentation after total hip arthroplasty: two case reports and literature review

Background

Ceramic fragmentation is a rare but serious complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). We reviewed the PubMed literature from 1990 to 2023 and found only 31 case reports of ceramic fragmentation after THA. Our case reports help to expand understanding of this rare complication. We shared our surgical experience and identified an ideal material for revision surgery, which can serve as a useful reference for other orthopedic surgeons to perform ceramic fragmentation revision surgery in the future. We also analyzed the possible causes, diagnosis, and treatment opinions of ceramic fragmentation.

Case presentation

This study presents two cases of ceramic fragmentation after THA. One patient had ceramic head fragmentation 10 years after the primary THA, and one patient had ceramic liner fragmentation 5 years after the primary THA. Both patients presented with pain, and one patient also reported a clicking sound in the hip. The two patients described here had BMIs of 23.7 and 23.1, respectively. Both patients' ceramic fragmentation were due to aseptic loosening, not periprosthetic joint infections, as confirmed by negative microbiological cultures. Radiographic examinations of both patients revealed radio-opaque wear debris around the hip joint prostheses and we describe the surgical protocols and intraoperative findings in both cases in detail.

Conclusion

Our cases and the literature suggest that ceramic fragmentation can occur at any time after THA. The most immediate symptoms are pain and noise, but some patients may be asymptomatic. Ceramic on polyethylene bearings is recommended for revision surgery whenever possible; metal bearings should be avoided.

New-onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Manifestation Following COVID-19: A Case Report and Literature Review

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory viral disease, and several cases of autoimmune diseases have been reported after infection. This report presents the case of a 38-year-old Japanese woman who developed systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) following COVID-19. Clinical manifestations included dermatological complications, joint pain, and positive autoantibodies. The patient met the SLE classification criteria, and renal involvement was observed. Her symptoms improved with immunosuppressive therapy. A literature review identified 10 similar cases, those with lymphopenia and renal involvement. SLE should be considered in patients with persistent nonspecific symptoms after COVID-19 infection, particularly when hematologic and renal involvement are present.

Mechanical Thrombectomy via Transbrachial Approach in the Emergency Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients with Aortic Pathologies: Our Experience and Literature Review

STUDY DESIGN

Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) via the transbrachial approach (TBA) is a very rare option used in cases of patients with aortic pathologies and acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to the insufficient evidence in the literature, the difficulty from a technical point of view and the result of this technique influenced by the complications that frequently accompany it.

BACKGROUND

Only a few cases of patients with aortic pathologies and acute ischemic stroke where MT via TBA were reported in the literature, and its application in the emergency management of AIS has still not been dealt with in detail.

OBJECTIVES

Out of a need to clarify and clearly emphasize the effectiveness of this approach in emergency MT via TBA in patients with AIS and aortic pathologies, this literature review and case report has the following objectives: the first one is the presentation of an emergency MT via transbrachial approach performed in a 44-year-old patient with AIS and diagnosed aortic coarctation during transfemural approach (TFA), with successful reperfusion in our department and the second one is to review the cases reports of patients with different aortic pathologies and AIS reperfusion therapy performed by MT via TBA from the literature.

METHODS

A total of nine cases (one personal case and eight published cases) were revised in terms of aortic pathologies type, reperfusion therapy type, and the complication of both mechanical thrombectomy and local transbrachial approach.

RESULTS

Mechanical thrombectomy through the transbrachial approach was the first choice in more than half of these cases (55.55%, n = 5 cases) in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke in the presence of previously diagnosed aortic pathologies. In one-third of all cases (33.33%, n = 3, our case and 2 case reports from the literature), the transbrachial approach was chosen after attempting to advance the guiding catheter through the transfemoral approach and intraprocedural diagnosis of aortic pathology. In only one case, after an ultrasound evaluation of the radial artery that showed a monophasic flow, MT was performed via TBA. Local transbrachial complication was reported in one case, and in two other cases, it was not stated if there were such complications. Hemorrhagic transformation of AIS was reported in two cases that underwent MT-only cerebral reperfusion via TBA, one with acute aortic dissection type A and our case of previously undiagnosed aortic coarctation. In the cases in whom short and long-term follow-up was reported, the outcome of treatment, which was not exclusively endovascular (77.77% cases with only MT and 33.33% with association of first thrombolysis and after MT), was good (six from nine patients). In two case reports, the outcomes were not stated, and one patient died after a long hospitalization in the intensive care unit from respiratory complications (our patient).

CONCLUSIONS

Being a clinical emergency, acute ischemic stroke requires urgent medical intervention. In patients with aortic pathologies, where acute ischemic stroke emergency care is a challenge, mechanical thrombectomy via the transbrachial approach is a safe alternative method for cerebral reperfusion.

Risks of Drone Use in Light of Literature Studies

This article aims to present the results of a bibliometric analysis of relevant literature and discuss the main research streams related to the topic of risks in drone applications. The methodology of the conducted research consisted of five procedural steps, including the planning of the research, conducting a systematic review of the literature, proposing a classification framework corresponding to contemporary research trends related to the risk of drone applications, and compiling the characteristics of the publications assigned to each of the highlighted thematic groups. This systematic literature review used the PRISMA method. A total of 257 documents comprising articles and conference proceedings were analysed. On this basis, eight thematic categories related to the use of drones and the risks associated with their operation were distinguished. Due to the high content within two of these categories, a further division into subcategories was proposed to illustrate the research topics better. The conducted investigation made it possible to identify the current research trends related to the risk of drone use and pointed out the existing research gaps, both in the area of risk assessment methodology and in its application areas. The results obtained from the analysis can provide interesting material for both industry and academia.

Cerebellar encephalitis associated with anti-mGluR1 antibodies: a case report and comprehensive literature review

Anti-metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 encephalitis is an uncommon autoimmune condition characterized by a subacute onset of cerebellar syndrome. Frequently, it also manifests as sleep disorders and cognitive or behavioral changes. While immunotherapy is the primary treatment approach, the disease remains poorly understood. Herein, we present a case of anti-metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 encephalitis, highlighting its primary cerebellar syndrome manifestation. The first magnetic resonance imaging scan showed no obvious abnormality. Lumbar puncture showed increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure, increased white blood cell count and protein level. The next-generation sequencing of cerebrospinal fluid showed Epstein-Barr virus infection, and the patient was diagnosed with viral cerebellar encephalitis. However, antiviral therapy was ineffective. Finally, anti-metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 was measured at 1:1,000, and the patient was definitely diagnosed with anti-metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 encephalitis. Therefore, clinicians should pay attention to such diseases to avoid misdiagnosis.

Current advancements in therapeutic approaches in orthopedic surgery: a review of recent trends

Recent advancements in orthopedic surgery have greatly improved the management of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. This review discusses the latest therapeutic approaches that have emerged in orthopedics. We examine the use of regenerative medicine, including stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, to accelerate healing and promote tissue regeneration. Additionally, we explore the application of robotic-assisted surgery, which provides greater precision and accuracy during surgical procedures. We also delve into the emergence of personalized medicine, which tailors treatments to individual patients based on their unique genetic and environmental factors. Furthermore, we discuss telemedicine and remote patient monitoring as methods for improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Finally, we examine the growing interest in using artificial intelligence and machine learning in orthopedics, particularly in diagnosis and treatment planning. Overall, these advancements in therapeutic approaches have significantly improved patient outcomes, reduced recovery times, and enhanced the overall quality of care in orthopedic surgery.

Hemoptysis caused by Parvimonas micra: case report and literature review

Background

Parvimonas micra (P. micra), a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, exhibits colonization tendencies on oral mucosal and skin surfaces, potentially evolving into a pathogenic entity associated with diverse diseases. The diagnostic trajectory for P. micra-related diseases encounters delays, often with severe consequences, including fatality, attributed to the absence of symptom specificity and challenges in culture. The absence of a consensus on the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to P. micra exacerbates the complexity of addressing associated conditions. This study aims to elucidate and scrutinize the clinical manifestations linked to P. micra, drawing insights from an extensive literature review of pertinent case reports.

Case presentation

A 53-year-old male sought medical attention at our institution presenting with recurrent hemoptysis. Empirical treatment was initiated while awaiting pathogen culture results; however, the patient's symptoms persisted. Subsequent metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) analysis revealed a pulmonary infection attributable to P. micra. Resolution of symptoms occurred following treatment with piperacillin sulbactam sodium and moxifloxacin hydrochloride. A comprehensive literature review, utilizing the PubMed database, was conducted to assess case reports over the last decade where P. micra was identified as the causative agent.

Conclusion

The literature analysis underscores the predilection of P. micra for immunocompromised populations afflicted by cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, orthopedic conditions, and tumors. Risk factors, including oral and periodontal hygiene, smoking, and alcohol consumption, were found to be associated with P. micra infections. Clinical manifestations encompassed fever, cough, sputum production, and back pain, potentially leading to severe outcomes such as Spondylodiscitis, septic arthritis, lung abscess, bacteremia, sepsis, and mortality. While conventional bacterial culture remains the primary diagnostic tool, emerging technologies like mNGS offer alternative considerations. In terms of treatment modalities, β-lactam antibiotics and nitroimidazoles predominated, exhibiting recovery rates of 56.10% (46/82) and 23.17% (19/82), respectively. This case report and literature review collectively aim to enhance awareness among clinicians and laboratory medicine professionals regarding the intricacies of P. micra-associated infections.

Cat Scratch Disease of the Breast/Axilla: Recognition of a Rare Disease and Approaches for Differential Diagnosis

Cat scratch disease rarely presents as a breast or axillary mass mimicking carcinoma both clinically and radiologically. Diagnosing breast/axillary cat scratch disease is challenging due to its rarity and nonspecific findings. Here, we reported 2 patients with breast cat scratch disease and reviewed 14 patients with cat scratch disease involving breast/axilla from the past 30 years. It mainly affects women (median age: 48), consistently presenting as axillary lymphadenopathy, and demonstrates ipsilateral breast mass in half of patients (50%, 8/16). The breast mass was most commonly located in the upper outer quadrant (88%, 7/8), indicating the possibility of disease extension from axillary adenopathy. Around half of patients (56%, 9/16) reported cat exposure. Histologically, most patients (93%, 14/15) presented as necrotizing granulomas, with characteristic stellate-shaped necrosis in 5 patients. Although pathologic differential diagnoses between cat scratch disease and cancer are straightforward, distinguishing cat scratch disease from other granulomatous mastitis poses diagnostic challenges. Silver stains should be included in the diagnostic workup panel when highly suspecting cat scratch disease clinically. However, they were only able to highlight the causative microorganism in 54% (7/18) patients, and the gram stain was negative in all 12 tested patients. In contrast, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the causative microorganism was consistently positive in all 3 tested patients, while serologic test confirmed diagnosis in 85% (11/13) patients; 1 patient with negative serology showed a positive PCR result. Therefore, upfront PCR tests with or without serologic study should be considered to confirm the diagnosis of cat scratch disease in a timely manner.

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformation with severe hemoptysis in advanced age: a case report and literature review

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformation (BPFM) is a rare developmental malformation disease due to embryonic defects, with an even rarer occurrence in adults. We report a diagnosed case in an adult patient, and notably, this is the first reported case of such advanced age. Additionally, she experienced coughing up approximately 1 liter of blood and partial lung tissue, accompanied by respiratory failure and shock. Following treatment with transcatheter arterial embolization, her condition improved, and she has remained stable during follow-up. We present a case report and conducted a systematic review on this particular case.

Pseudolycoriella hygida (Sauaia and Alves)-An Overview of a Model Organism in Genetics, with New Aspects in Morphology and Systematics

Pseudolycoriella hygida (Sauaia & Alves, 1968) is a sciarid that has been continuously cultured in the laboratory for nearly 60 years. Studies on this species have contributed to the understanding of DNA puffs, which are characteristic of Sciaridae, and to the knowledge of more general aspects of insect biology, including cell death, nucleolar organization, and the role of the hormone ecdysone during molting. The genome of Psl. hygida has now been sequenced, and it is the third publicly available sciarid genome. The aim of this work is to expand the current knowledge on Psl. hygida. The morphology of the adults is revisited. The morphology of larvae and pupae is described, together with the behavior of immature stages under laboratory conditions. Cytogenetic maps of the salivary gland polytene chromosomes are presented, together with a comparative analysis of the mitotic chromosomes of six different sciarid species. Pseudolycoriella hygida was originally described as a species of Bradysia and recently moved to Pseudolycoriella. We examine here the systematic position of Psl. hygida in the latter genus. Our results extend the characterization of an unconventional model organism and constitute an important resource for those working on the cytogenetics, ecology, taxonomy, and phylogenetic systematics of sciarids.

Relationship between stress and coronary artery disease: A comprehensive review

Coronary artery disease (CAD) poses a substantial public health challenge. This review examines the intricate relationship between psychological stress and CAD, drawing from recent research spanning the last 5 to 10 years. The literature review is organized around critical themes. It includes an analysis of genetic loci in CAD susceptibility and underscores the role of green environments in reducing cardiovascular risk. A quantitative analysis presents numerical findings for clarity, while pathophysiological mechanisms are elucidated through informative figures and diagrams. The review engages with controversies and disparities in the literature, offering a balanced perspective. A tabular comparative analysis outlines the strengths and limitations of existing approaches, emphasizing conflicting findings, and environmental factors. The review concludes by distilling key takeaways for healthcare professionals and researchers. Practical implications are explored, and lessons learned from the research process are reflected upon. The conclusion also suggests avenues for further study in understanding stress's impact on CAD.

Integrated Theory-Based Health and Development Interventions for Young People: A Global Scoping Review

BACKGROUND

Most health and developmental issues affecting young people are interrelated. However, few interventions address multiple behavioral domains simultaneously or are based on theories that encompass a holistic perspective of youth development.

AIM

The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and describe the range of theory-based, multibehavioral health interventions aimed at improving two or more of the following behavioral youth outcomes: (1) sexual and reproductive health; (2) education and employment; (3) violence; and (4) substance use.

METHODS

Interventions conducted worldwide and published in English or Spanish between January 2000 and July 2020 were identified using four databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, LILACS, and SciELO.

RESULTS

A total of 11,084 articles were identified, of which 477 were retrieved and assessed for eligibility. Twenty-three articles (evaluating 21 interventions) ultimately met the inclusion criteria. Most interventions were conducted in the United States and addressed two behavioral domains of interest, although seven interventions incorporated three domains, and one incorporated all four. Substance use was the most common domain (16 interventions) but only in the United States/Canada, followed by sexual and reproductive health (14 interventions). All produced significant improvement in at least one outcome or for at least one subgroup of youth. The most common theoretical foundations were positive youth development and social learning theory.

CONCLUSION

Integrated interventions that are theory based and evidence informed can support positive development and empower youth to make healthy decisions. Further efforts are needed to address structural and policy issues that affect young people's developmental opportunities and health outcomes.

Postpartum Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare acute-onset neurological disease with significant morbidity and mortality. The risk of GBS increases after delivery. Labor and delivery presents many possible risk factors for GBS. However, risk factors and prognosis of postpartum GBS remain unclear due to its low incidence. Here, we first present a patient with a history of postpartum GBS who returned for an elective repeat cesarean section (C-section). For her previous delivery, the patient received spinal anesthesia for an urgent C-section. She presented postpartum with jaw pain, facial palsy, respiratory difficulty, progressive bilateral lower extremity weakness, and areflexia. The diagnosis of GBS was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination, nerve conduction studies (NCS), and electromyography (EMG). Her symptoms of GBS improved after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment. The patient also had an Escherichia coli-positive urinary tract infection (UTI), which was treated with nitrofurantoin. For her repeat elective C-section, we performed a dural puncture epidural (DPE) anesthesia. After delivery, she was discharged to home uneventfully. She did not report any new neurological symptoms at her three-week follow-up. Here, we also review published cases of postpartum GBS and discuss peripartum anesthetic considerations for patients with GBS, aiming to inform clinical management of postpartum GBS in the future.

Complications of lymphangioleiomyomatosis in pregnancy: a case report and review of the literature

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare cystic lung disease primarily affecting premenopausal females and may be exacerbated by pregnancy. We conducted a literature review of lymphangioleiomyomatosis during pregnancy with a specific focus on related maternal morbidity and obstetrical outcomes. We also report a case of lymphangioleiomyomatosis that presented as an acute spontaneous pneumothorax in the third trimester of pregnancy, followed by significant maternal morbidity. A 37-year-old primigravid woman who presented at 29 weeks 5 days gestation with chest pain was diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax. Further imaging demonstrated cystic lung lesions and renal angiomyolipomas. She developed severe abdominal pain concerning for placental abruption that led to an urgent cesarean delivery at 30 weeks 2 days gestation. Her course was complicated by recurrent pneumothorax, superimposed preeclampsia, and significant ileus and bowel dilation complicated by bowel perforation. For patients with a clinical suspicion of lymphangioleiomyomatosis in pregnancy, prompt recognition, diagnosis, and referral to appropriate multidisciplinary subspecialists is critical to mitigate complications and optimize outcomes both during and after pregnancy.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus: a case report and review of the literature

Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) use has been associated with numerous autoimmune side effects, known as immune related adverse events (irAEs). Cutaneous irAEs are common and affect up to 50% of patients treated with ICIs. There have been an increasing number of cases reported in the literature regarding ICI-induced subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE). ICI-induced SCLE is important to recognize as it can result in a delayed and/or prolonged skin reaction despite treatment discontinuation. We describe a patient with gastro-esophageal adenocarcinoma who developed SCLE following one cycle of nivolumab treatment. A 75-year-old man presented to our clinic with a new photo-distributed rash composed of oval scaly pink papules and plaques involving his chest and arms. Despite treatment with topical corticosteroids, he presented to the emergency department 1 week later with worsening rash. Skin biopsy showed vacuolar interface pattern, along with superficial perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate, consistent with a drug eruption. The clinicopathological presentation was consistent with ICI-induced SCLE. Nivolumab treatment was discontinued due to the severity of the rash. The rash remitted with systemic corticosteroids, high potency topical steroids, and hydroxychloroquine. Unfortunately, the patient developed intraperitoneal metastatic disease, and was enrolled in hospice care. In this paper, we highlight the importance of early identification and treatment of this irAE. A review of the literature, including a discussion on the management of ICI-induced SCLE is also provided.

Coping strategies and social support in nursing students during clinical practice: A scoping review

To identify the coping strategies and social support received by nursing students during clinical practice.

Scoping review.

METHODS

Primary studies on coping strategies and social support, in full text, in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese and published in 2018 or later were included. Search was carried out in January 2023 on EBSCOhost, PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, OpenAIRE, MedNar Search, WorldWideScience and the references of previously selected articles.

RESULTS

A total of 24 studies were identified. Seven studies mentioned social support as a useful strategy and several instruments were identified that allow measurement.

CONCLUSIONS

Few studies establish a direct relationship between the effectiveness of coping strategies with stressful situations. Positive coping strategies are associated with effective stress management. The relationship between social support and stress reduction is scarcely addressed.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE

Stressful situations can have an impact on students' health and on the quality of care. Nursing schools and healthcare institutions must work together in programmes to improve students coping abilities.

IMPACT

This review addressed coping strategies used by nursing students during clinical practice. A set of relevant coping strategies were identified that can be used by teachers to improve students' outcomes.

Augmented reality in brachytherapy: A narrative review

Brachytherapy (BRT) plays a pivotal role in the treatment of tumors, offering precise radiation therapy directly to the affected area. However, this technique demands extensive training and skills development, posing challenges for widespread adoption and ensuring patient safety. This narrative review explored the utilization of augmented reality (AR) in BRT, seeking to summarize existing evidence, discuss key findings, limitations, and quality of research as well as outline future research directions. The review revealed promising findings regarding the integration of AR in BRT. Studies have suggested the feasibility and potential benefits of AR in education, training, intra-operative guidance, and treatment planning. However, the evidence remains limited and heterogeneous, with most studies in preliminary phases. Standardization, prospective clinical trials, patient-centered outcomes assessment, and cost-effectiveness analysis emerge as critical areas for future research. Augmented reality holds transformative potential for BRT by enhancing precision, safety, and training efficiency. To fully implement these benefits, the field requires standardized protocols, rigorous clinical trials, and in-depth patient-centered investigations. Policy-makers and healthcare providers should closely monitor developments in AR and consider its implementation in clinical practice, contingent and robust evidence, and cost-effectiveness analysis. The pro-active pursuit of evidence-based practices will contribute to optimizing patient care in BRT.
