Design and preparation of an artificial vascular scaffold with internal surface modification

BACKGROUND

Advances in regeneration methods have brought us improved vascular scaffolds with small diameters (φ < 6 mm) for enhancing biological suitability that solve their propensity for causing intimal hyperplasia post-transplantation.

METHODS

The correlation between the rehydration ratio of the hydrogel and its material concentration is obtained by adjusting the material ratio of the hydrogel solution. The vascular model with helical structure has been established and analyzed to verify the effect of helical microvascular structure on thrombosis formation by the fluid simulation methods. Then, the helical structure vascular has been fabricated by self-developed 3D bioprinter, the vascular scaffolds are freeze-dried and rehydrated in polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution.

RESULTS

The experimental results showed that the hybrid hydrogel had a qualified rehydration ratio when the content of gelatin, sodium alginate, and glycerol was 5, 6, and 3 wt%. The established flow channel model can effectively reduce thrombus deposition and improve long-term patency ratio. After PEG solution modification, the contact angle of the inner wall of the vascular scaffold was less than 30°, showing better hydrophilic characteristics.

CONCLUSION

In study, a small-diameter inner wall vascular scaffold with better long-term patency was successfully designed and prepared by wrinkling and PEG modification of the inner wall of the vascular scaffold. This study not only creates small-diameter vascular scaffolds with helical structure that improves the surface hydrophilicity to reduce the risk of thrombosis but also rekindles confidence in the regeneration of small caliber vascular structures.

Controlling Surface Structure and Primary Particle Size to Enhance Performance and Reduce Gas Evolution in Lithium- and Manganese-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes

Practical application of lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide cathodes has been hindered despite their high performance and low cost owing to high gas evolution accompanying capacity loss even in a conservative voltage window. Here, we control the surface structure and primary particle size of lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide cathodes not only to enhance the electrochemical performance but also to reduce gas evolution. Sulfur-coated Fm3̅m/R3̅m double reduced surface layers and Mo doping dramatically reduce gas evolution, which entails the improvement of electrochemical performance. With the optimization, we prove that it is competitive enough to conventional high-nickel cathodes in the aspects of gas evolution as well as electrochemical performance in the conservative voltage window of 2.5-4.4 V. Our findings provide invaluable insights on the improvement of electrochemical performance and gas evolution properties in lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide cathodes.

Engineering Magnetic Nanoclusters for Highly Efficient Heating in Radio-Frequency Nanowarming

Effective thawing of cryopreserved samples requires rapid and uniform heating. This is achievable through nanowarming, an approach that heats magnetic nanoparticles by using alternating magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate the synthesis and surface modification of magnetic nanoclusters for efficient nanowarming. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoclusters with an optimal diameter of 58 nm exhibit a high specific absorption rate of 1499 W/g Fe under an alternating magnetic field at 43 kA/m and 413 kHz, more than twice that of commercial iron oxide cores used in prior nanowarming studies. Surface modification with a permeable resorcinol-formaldehyde resin (RFR) polymer layer significantly enhances their colloidal stability in complex cryoprotective solutions, while maintaining their excellent heating capacity. The Fe3O4@RFR nanoparticles achieved a high average heating rate of 175 °C/min in cryopreserved samples at a concentration of 10 mg Fe/mL and were successfully applied in nanowarming porcine iliac arteries, highlighting their potential for enhancing the efficacy of cryopreservation.

Manipulating Stem Cell Fate with Disordered Bioactive Cues on Surfaces: The Role of Bioactive Ligand Selection

The development of 2D or 3D bioactive platforms for rapidly isolating pure populations of cells from adult stem cells holds promise for advancing the understanding of cellular mechanisms, drug testing, and tissue engineering. Over the years, methods have emerged to synthesize bioactive micro- and nanostructured 2D materials capable of directing stem cell fate. We introduce a novel method for randomly micro- or nanopatterning any protein/peptide onto both 2D and 3D scaffolds via spray technology. Our goal is to investigate the impact of arranging bioactive micropatterns (ordered vs disordered) on surfaces to guide human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) differentiation. The spray technology efficiently coats materials with controlled, cost-effective bioactive micropatterns in various sizes and shapes. BMP-2 mimetic peptides were covalently grafted, individually or in combination with RGD peptides, onto activated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) surfaces through a spraying process, incorporating nano/microscale parameters like size, shape, and composition. The study explores different peptide distributions on surfaces and various peptide combinations. Four surfaces were homogeneously functionalized with these peptides (M1 to M4 with various densities of peptides), and six surfaces with disordered micro- and nanopatterns of peptides (S0 to S5 with different sizes of peptide patterns) were synthesized. Fluorescence microscopy assessed peptide distribution, followed by hMSC culture for 2 weeks, and evaluated osteogenic differentiation via immunocytochemistry and RT-qPCR for osteoblast and osteocyte markers. Cells on uniformly peptide-functionalized surfaces exhibited cuboidal forms, while those on surfaces with disordered patterns tended toward columnar or cuboidal shapes. Surfaces S4 and S5 showed dendrite-like formations resembling an osteocyte morphology. S5 showed significant overexpression of osteoblast (OPN) and osteocyte markers (E11, DMP1, and SOST) compared to control surfaces and other micropatterned surfaces. Notably, despite sharing an equivalent quantity of peptides with a homogeneous functionalized surface, S5 displayed a distinct distribution of peptides, resulting in enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs.

Concerted Effect of Ion- and Electron-Conductive Additives on the Electrochemical and Thermal Performances of the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode Material Synthesized by a Taylor-Flow Reactor for Lithium-Ion Batteries

To address the issue that a single coating agent cannot simultaneously enhance Li+-ion transport and electronic conductivity of Ni-rich cathode materials with surface modification, in the present study, we first successfully synthesized a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode material by a Taylor-flow reactor followed by surface coating with Li-BTJ and dispersion of vapor-grown carbon fibers treated with polydopamine (PDA-VGCF) filler in the composite slurry. The Li-BTJ hybrid oligomer coating can suppress side reactions and enhance ionic conductivity, and the PDA-VGCFs filler can increase electronic conductivity. As a result of the synergistic effect of the dual conducting agents, the cells based on the modified NCM811 electrodes deliver superior cycling stability and rate capability, as compared to the bare NCM811 electrode. The CR2032 coin-type cells with the NCM811@Li-BTJ + PDA-VGCF electrode retain a discharge specific capacity of ∼92.2% at 1C after 200 cycles between 2.8 and 4.3 V (vs Li/Li+), while bare NCM811 retains only 84.0%. Moreover, the NCM811@Li-BTJ + PDA-VGCF electrode-based cells reduced the total heat (Qt) by ca. 7.0% at 35 °C over the bare electrode. Remarkably, the Li-BTJ hybrid oligomer coating on the surface of the NCM811 active particles acts as an artificial cathode electrolyte interphase (ACEI) layer, mitigating irreversible surface phase transformation of the layered NCM811 cathode and facilitating Li+ ion transport. Meanwhile, the fiber-shaped PDA-VGCF filler significantly reduced microcrack propagation during cycling and promoted the electronic conductance of the NCM811-based electrode. Generally, enlightened with the current experimental findings, the concerted ion and electron conductive agents significantly enhanced the Ni-rich cathode-based cell performance, which is a promising strategy to apply to other Ni-rich cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Design of Modified Polymer Membranes Using Machine Learning

Surface modification is an attractive strategy to adjust the properties of polymer membranes. Unfortunately, predictive structure-processing-property relationships between the modification strategies and membrane performance are often unknown. One possibility to tackle this challenge is the application of data-driven methods such as machine learning. In this study, we applied machine learning methods to data sets containing the performance parameters of modified membranes. The resulting machine learning models were used to predict performance parameters, such as the pure water permeability and the zeta potential of membranes modified with new substances. The predictions had low prediction errors, which allowed us to generalize them to similar membrane modifications and processing conditions. Additionally, machine learning methods were able to identify the impact of substance properties and process parameters on the resulting membrane properties. Our results demonstrate that small data sets, as they are common in materials science, can be used as training data for predictive machine learning models. Therefore, machine learning shows great potential as a tool to expedite the development of high-performance membranes while reducing the time and costs associated with the development process at the same time.

Energy Transfer-Based Recognition of Membrane Cholesterol by Controlling Intradistance of Linker

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are good candidates for donor material in energy transfer systems and can easily be functionalized with various ligands on the surface with Au-S bonding. Cyclodextrin (CD) forms inclusion complexes with fluorophores due to its unique structure for host-guest interaction. In this study, we fabricated βCD-functionalized AuNPs using different lengths of thiol ligands and recognized cholesterol to confirm the energy-transfer-based turn-on fluorescence mechanism. AuNP-βCD conjugated with various thiol ligands and quenched the fluorescein (Fl) dye, forming βCD-Fl inclusion complexes. As the distance between AuNPs and βCD decreased, the quenching efficiency became higher. The quenched fluorescence was recovered when the cholesterol replaced the Fl because of the stronger binding affinity of the cholesterol with βCD. The efficiency of cholesterol recognition was also affected by the energy transfer effect because the shorter βCD ligand had a higher fluorescence recovery. Furthermore, we fabricated a liposome with cholesterol embedded in the lipid bilayer membrane to mimic the cholesterol coexisting with lipids in human serum. These cellular cholesterols accelerated the replacement of the Fl molecules, resulting in a fluorescence recovery higher than that of pure lipid. These discoveries are expected to give guidance towards cholesterol sensors or energy-transfer-based biosensors using AuNPs.

Dual Decoration of Ferritin Nanocages by Caffeic Acid and Betanin with Covalent and Noncovalent Approaches: Structure and Stability Analyses

Ferritin is a cage-like protein with modifiable outer and inner surfaces. To functionalize ferritin with preferable carrier applications, caffeic acid was first covalently bound to the soybean ferritin outer surface to fabricate a caffeic acid-ferritin complex (CFRT) by alkali treatment (pH 9.0). A decreased content of free amino acid (0.34 μmol/mg) and increased polyphenol binding equivalent (63.76 nmol/mg) indicated the formation of CFRT (ferritin/caffeic acid, 1:80). Fluorescence and infrared spectra verified the binding of caffeic acids to the ferritin structure. DSC indicated that the covalent modification enhanced the thermal stability of CFRT. Besides, CFRT maintained the typically spherical shape of ferritin (12 nm) and a hydration radius of 7.58 nm. Moreover, the bioactive colorant betanin was encapsulated in CFRT to form betanin-loaded CFRT (CFRTB), with an encapsulation rate of 15.5% (w/w). The betanin stabilities in CFRTB were significantly improved after heat, light, and Fe3+ treatments, and its red color retention was enhanced relative to the free betanin. This study delves into the modifiable ferritin application as nanocarriers of dual molecules and gives guidelines for betanin as a food colorant.

Air-Stable Prussian White Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries Enabled by ZnO Surface Modification

Iron-based Prussian white (PW) is one of the promising cathodes for sodium-ion batteries, owing to its high capacity and low cost. However, the practical application of PW is hindered by its poor air stability. The metal-oxide coating has been proven to be an effective way to improve the air stability of electrode materials. Whereas, the target electrode materials conventionally need to be dissolved in the aqueous solution to obtain precursor composites and subsequently calcined at a high temperature during the metal-oxide coating process, which could destroy the phase structure of PW as a result of the sodium leaching into the water and thermal decomposition at the high temperature. In this work, we propose a facile method to construct a ZnO surface layer on PW by utilizing ethanol as a solvent and a mild post-treatment temperature. The ZnO coating layer effectively enhances the air stability of PW and induces the formation of the stable interface on PW. The PW-5 wt % ZnO-E (exposed in 60% humidity air after 30 days) cathode demonstrates a much higher capacity retention (94.1%) at 1 C after 200 cycles than that of PW-E (54%). This work lays a solid foundation for further application of PW.

Advances of Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Materials for Tumor Imaging and Therapy

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are a class of functional anionic clays that typically consist of orthorhombic arrays of metal hydroxides with anions sandwiched between the layers. Due to their unique properties, including high chemical stability, good biocompatibility, controlled drug loading, and enhanced drug bioavailability, LDHs have many potential applications in the medical field. Especially in the fields of bioimaging and tumor therapy. This paper reviews the research progress of LDHs and their nanocomposites in the field of tumor imaging and therapy. First, the structure and advantages of LDH are discussed. Then, several commonly used methods for the preparation of LDH are presented, including co-precipitation, hydrothermal and ion exchange methods. Subsequently, recent advances in layered hydroxides and their nanocomposites for cancer imaging and therapy are highlighted. Finally, based on current research, we summaries the prospects and challenges of layered hydroxides and nanocomposites for cancer diagnosis and therapy.

First United States multicenter experience with the new-generation FRED X surface-modified flow diversion stent: feasibility, safety, and short-term efficacy

OBJECTIVE

Flow diversion created a paradigm shift in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. The new flow redirection endoluminal device with X technology (FRED X) is the latest update of the recent Food and Drug Administration-approved FRED. The FRED X is engineered to reduce material thrombogenicity and enhance vessel healing. In this study, the authors aimed to evaluate the feasibility and early safety and efficacy of the new FRED X.

METHODS

The authors retrospectively collected and analyzed data from patients who had undergone flow diversion with the new FRED X at four tertiary cerebrovascular centers in the United States from February 2022 through July 2022.

RESULTS

Forty-four patients with 45 aneurysms treated using 46 devices comprised the overall study cohort and were divided into two groups: 39 patients with unruptured aneurysms and 5 patients with ruptured aneurysms. The mean patient age was 57.7 ± 9.1 years, and most patients were female (84%). Ninety-one percent of the aneurysms were saccular, with the majority (93%) located in the anterior circulation, specifically the posterior communicating (27%) and carotid ophthalmic (27%) territories. The mean maximum aneurysm diameter was 5.6 ± 4.6 mm, and 20% of the lesions had been previously treated. The mean procedure time was 61.6 minutes, with a mean cumulative fluoroscopy time of 24.6 minutes. Additionally, 7% of the lesions received adjunct treatment. Stent placement was successful in 100% of cases, achieving good wall apposition and complete neck coverage. Further, immediate aneurysm contrast stasis > 90% was observed in 61% of cases. Symptomatic postoperative complications occurred in 3 patients in the unruptured cohort and 1 patient in the ruptured cohort. All patients in the study were discharged on dual antiplatelet regimens with a modified Rankin Scale score of 0. At 6 months after treatment, 89% of cases had adequate occlusion, with < 6% of cases having asymptomatic in-stent stenosis. All patients had excellent functional outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

FRED X for the treatment of an intracranial aneurysm is technically feasible alone or in conjunction with intrasaccular embolization. In addition, the study results showed very promising early safety and efficacy. Follow-up studies should establish the long-term safety and efficacy profiles of this new stent.

Surface Modification of Lignite with Alkyl and Mixed Alkyl-Aryl Films Generated from an Aryl Diazonium Salt and Alkyl Halides: Experimental Results and Theoretical Analyses

In search of new possible uses of cheap lignite from the Kosova Bassin, the surface of lignite powders is modified with alkyl or mixed alkyl-aryl layers. Modification is performed in aqueous acid solution containing an aryl diazonium salt and an alkyl halide compound in millimolar concentration, in the presence of potassium iodide as a reducing agent at equimolar concentration. Attachment of alkyl films substituted with carboxylic groups and aryl films with nitro or bis-trifluoromethyl groups is characterized by IRATR and XPS spectroscopy. The formation of a stable interface during the grafting reactions of alkyl and aryl moieties with lignite surface has been confirmed by theoretical calculations. Aryl diazonium salts once chemically or spontaneously reduced are a source of aryl radicals, able to attach chemically to the material surface or to react with alkyl halides by abstracting the halogen atom. If the aryl diazonium salts are unable to graft to the coal surface due to steric hindrance, they can, nevertheless, abstract an iodine or bromine atom to generate alkyl radicals that react with the material surface.

One-Pot Microfluidics to Engineer Chitosan Nanoparticles Conjugated with Antimicrobial Peptides Using "Photoclick" Chemistry: Validation Using the Gastric Bacterium Helicobacter pylori

Surface bioconjugation of antimicrobial peptides (AMP) onto nanoparticles (AMP-NP) is a complex, multistep, and time-consuming task. Herein, a microfluidic system for the one-pot production of AMP-NP was developed. Norbornene-modified chitosan was used for NP production (NorChit-NP), and thiolated-AMP was grafted on their surface via thiol-norbornene "photoclick" chemistry over exposure of two parallel UV LEDs. The MSI-78A was the AMP selected due to its high activity against a high priority (level 2) antibiotic-resistant gastric pathogen: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). AMP-NP (113 ± 43 nm; zeta potential 14.3 ± 7 mV) were stable in gastric settings without a cross-linker (up to 5 days in pH 1.2) and bactericidal against two highly pathogenic H. pylori strains (1011 NP/mL with 96 μg/mL MSI-78A). Eradication was faster for H. pylori 26695 (30 min) than for H. pylori J99 (24 h), which was explained by the lower minimum bactericidal concentration of soluble MSI-78A for H. pylori 26695 (32 μg/mL) than for H. pylori J99 (128 μg/mL). AMP-NP was bactericidal by inducing H. pylori cell membrane alterations, intracellular reorganization, generation of extracellular vesicles, and leakage of cytoplasmic contents (transmission electron microscopy). Moreover, NP were not cytotoxic against two gastric cell lines (AGS and MKN74, ATCC) at bactericidal concentrations. Overall, the designed microfluidic setup is a greener, simpler, and faster approach than the conventional methods to obtain AMP-NP. This technology can be further explored for the bioconjugation of other thiolated-compounds.

Ultra-Thin GaAs Single-Junction Solar Cells for Self-Powered Skin-Compatible Electrocardiogram Sensors

GaAs thin-film solar cells have high efficiency, reliability, and operational stability, making them a promising solution for self-powered skin-conformal biosensors. However, inherent device thickness limits suitability for such applications, making them uncomfortable and unreliable in flexural environments. Therefore, reducing the flexural rigidity becomes crucial for integration with skin-compatible electronic devices. Herein, this study demonstrated a novel one-step surface modification bonding methodology, allowing a streamlined transfer process of ultra-thin (2.3 µm thick) GaAs solar cells on flexible polymer substrates. This reproducible technique enables strong bonding between dissimilar materials (GaAs-polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) without high external pressures and temperatures. The fabricated solar cell showed exceptional performance with an open-circuit voltage of 1.018 V, short-circuit current density of 20.641 mA cm-2, fill factor of 79.83%, and power conversion efficiency of 16.77%. To prove the concept, the solar cell is integrated with a skin-compatible organic electrochemical transistor (OECT). Competitive electrical outputs of GaAs solar cells enabled high current levels of OECT under subtle light intensities lower than 50 mW cm-2, which demonstrates a self-powered electrocardiogram sensor with low noise (signal-to-noise ratio of 32.68 dB). Overall, this study presents a promising solution for the development of free-form and comfortable device structures that can continuously power wearable devices and biosensors.

Stoichiometrically Optimized Electrochromic Complex [V2 O2+ξ (OH)3-ξ ] Based Electrode: Prototype Supercapacitor with Multicolor Indicator

The systematic structure modification of metal oxides is becoming more attractive, and effective strategies for structural tunning are highly desirable for improving their practical color-modulating energy storage performances. Here, the ability of a stoichiometrically tuned oxide-hydroxide complex of porous vanadium oxide, namely [V2 O2+ξ (OH)3-ξ ]ξ = 0:3 for multifunctional electrochromic supercapacitor application is demonstrated. Theoretically, the pre-optimized oxide complex is synthesized using a simple wet chemical etching technique in its optimized stoichiometry [V2 O2+ξ (OH)3-ξ ] with ξ = 0, providing more electroactive surface sites. The multifunctional electrode shows a high charge storage property of 610 Fg-1 at 1A g-1 , as well as good electrochromic properties with high color contrast of 70% and 50% at 428 and 640 nm wavelengths, faster switching, and high coloration efficiency. When assembled in a solid-state symmetric electrochromic supercapacitor device, it exhibits an ultrahigh power density of 1066 mWcm-2 , high energy density of 246 mWhcm-2 , and high specific capacitance of 290 mFcm-2 at 0.2 mAcm-2 . A prepared prototype device displays red when fully charged, green when half charged, and blue when fully discharged. A clear evidence of optimizing the multifunctional performance of electrochromic supercapacitor by stoichiometrical tuning is presented along with demonstrating a device prototype of a 25 cm2 large device for real-life applications.

Evaluation of Corrosion Performance of AZ31 Mg Alloy in Physiological and Highly Corrosive Solutions

Resorbable Mg and Mg alloys have gained significant interest as promising biomedical materials. However, corrosion of these alloys can lead to premature reduction in their mechanical properties, and therefore their corrosion rate needs to be controlled. The aim of this study is to select an appropriate environment where the effects of coatings on the corrosion rate of the underlying Mg alloy can be discerned and measured in a relatively short time period. The corrosion resistance of uncoated AZ31 alloy in different solutions [Hank's Balanced Salt Solution, 1× phosphate buffered solution (PBS), 4× PBS, 0.9%, 3.5%, and 5 M sodium chloride (NaCl)] was determined by measuring the weight loss over a 2 week period. Upon exposure to physiological solutions, the uncoated AZ31 alloys exhibited a variable weight increase of 0.4 ± 0.4%. 3.5% and 5 M NaCl solutions led to 0.27 and 9.7 mm/year corrosion rates, respectively, where the compositions of corrosion products from AZ31 in all saline solutions were similar. However, the corrosion of the AZ31 alloy when coated by electrochemical oxidation with two phosphate coatings, one containing fluorine (PF) and another containing both fluorine and silica (PFS), showed 0.3 and 0.25 mm/year corrosion rates, respectively. This is more than 30 times lower than that of the uncoated alloy (7.8 mm/year), making them promising candidates for corrosion protection in severe corrosive environments. Cross-sections of the samples showed that the coatings protected the alloy from corrosion by preventing access of saline to the alloy surface, and this was further reinforced by corrosion products from both the alloy and the coatings forming an additional barrier. The information in this paper provides a methodology for evaluating the effects of coatings on the rate of corrosion of magnesium alloys.

Aromatic Ethers Induced Electronic Structure Reconstruction on Encapsulated Nickel Catalysts for High-Performance Catalytic Hydrogenation

Carbon-encapsulated metal (CEM) catalysts effectively address supported metal catalyst instability by protecting the active metal with a shell. However, mass transfer limitations lead to reduced activity for catalytic hydrogenation reaction over most CEM catalysts. Herein, we introduce a dopant strategy aimed at incorporating nickel metal within graphene-like shells (GLS) featuring oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs). The core of this strategy involves precise control of GLS modification and the demonstrated pivotal influence of aromatic ether linkages (═C-O-C) in GLS for significant enhancement of catalytic performance. The introduction of ═C-O-C into GLS with stability was beneficial to improve the work function of the catalyst and promoted electron transmission from Ni metal core to GLS, further elevating the catalytic activity, based on the Mott-Schottky effect. In addition, the experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showcased that the ═C-O-C reconstructed the electronic state of GLS, imparting it highly specific for the adsorption of hydrogen and para-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB) to obtain para-chloroaniline (p-CAN) with high selectivity. This work manifested a feasible direction for the precise modulation and design of the OFGs in CEM catalysts to achieve highly efficient catalytic hydrogenation.

External Stimuli-Responsive Strategies for Surface Modification of Orthopedic Implants: Killing Bacteria and Enhancing Osteogenesis

Bacterial infection and insufficient osteogenic activity are the main causes of orthopedic implant failure. Conventional surface modification methods are difficult to meet the requirements for long-term implant placement. In order to better regulate the function of implant surfaces, especially to improve both the antibacterial and osteogenic activity, external stimuli-responsive (ESR) strategies have been employed for the surface modification of orthopedic implants. External stimuli act as "smart switches" to regulate the surface interactions with bacteria and cells. The balance between antibacterial and osteogenic capabilities of implant surfaces can be achieved through these specific ESR manifestations, including temperature changes, reactive oxygen species production, controlled release of bioactive molecules, controlled release of functional ions, etc. This Review summarizes the recent progress on different ESR strategies (based on light, ultrasound, electric, and magnetic fields) that can effectively balance antibacterial performance and osteogenic capability of orthopedic implants. Furthermore, the current limitations and challenges of ESR strategies for surface modification of orthopedic implants as well as future development direction are also discussed.

A Comparative Analysis of the Antibacterial Spectrum of Ultrasmall Manganese Ferrite Nanozymes with Varied Surface Modifications

Bacterial infectious diseases pose a significant global challenge. However, conventional antibacterial agents exhibit limited therapeutic effectiveness due to the emergence of drug resistance, necessitating the exploration of novel antibacterial strategies. Nanozymes have emerged as a highly promising alternative to antibiotics, owing to their particular catalytic activities against pathogens. Herein, we synthesized ultrasmall-sized MnFe2O4 nanozymes with different charges (MnFe2O4-COOH, MnFe2O4-PEG, MnFe2O4-NH2) and assessed their antibacterial capabilities. It was found that MnFe2O4 nanozymes exhibited both antibacterial and antibiofilm properties attributed to their excellent peroxidase-like activities and small sizes, enabling them to penetrate biofilms and interact with bacteria. Moreover, MnFe2O4 nanozymes effectively expedite wound healing within 12 days and facilitate tissue repair and regeneration while concurrently reducing inflammation. MnFe2O4-COOH displayed favorable antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, with 80% bacterial removal efficiency against MRSA by interacting with phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and cardiolipin (CL) of the membrane. By interacting with negatively charged bacteria surfaces, MnFe2O4-NH2 demonstrated the most significant and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, with 95 and 85% removal efficiency against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and P. aeruginosa, respectively. MnFe2O4-PEG dissipated membrane potential and reduced ATP levels in MRSA and P. aeruginosa, showing relatively broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. To conclude, MnFe2O4 nanozymes offer a promising therapeutic approach for treating wound infections.

Advanced TiO2/Al2O3 Bilayer ALD Coatings for Improved Lithium-Rich Layered Oxide Electrodes

Surface modification is a highly effective strategy for addressing issues in lithium-rich layered oxide (LLO) cathodes, including phase transformation, particle cracking, oxygen gas release, and transition-metal ion dissolution. Existing single-/double-layer coating strategies face drawbacks such as poor component contact and complexity. Herein, we present the results of a low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for creating a TiO2/Al2O3 bilayer on composite cathodes made of AS200 (Li1.08Ni0.34Co0.08Mn0.5O2). Electrochemical analysis demonstrates that TiO2/Al2O3-coated LLO electrodes exhibit improved discharge capacities and enhanced capacity retention compared with uncoated samples. The TAA-5/AS200 bilayer-coated electrode, in particular, demonstrates exceptional capacity retention (∼90.4%) and a specific discharge capacity of 146 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 1C within the voltage range of 2.2 to 4.6 V. The coated electrodes also show reduced voltage decay, lower surface film resistance, and improved interfacial charge transfer resistances, contributing to enhanced stability. The ALD-deposited TiO2/Al2O3 bilayer coatings exhibit promising potential for advancing the electrochemical performance of lithium-rich layered oxide cathodes in lithium-ion batteries.

Nanopatterned Monolayers of Bioinspired, Sequence-Defined Polypeptoid Brushes for Semiconductor/Bio Interfaces

The ability to control and manipulate semiconductor/bio interfaces is essential to enable biological nanofabrication pathways and bioelectronic devices. Traditional surface functionalization methods, such as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), provide limited customization for these interfaces. Polymer brushes offer a wider range of chemistries, but choices that maintain compatibility with both lithographic patterning and biological systems are scarce. Here, we developed a class of bioinspired, sequence-defined polymers, i.e., polypeptoids, as tailored polymer brushes for surface modification of semiconductor substrates. Polypeptoids featuring a terminal hydroxyl (-OH) group are designed and synthesized for efficient melt grafting onto the native oxide layer of Si substrates, forming ultrathin (∼1 nm) monolayers. By programming monomer chemistry, our polypeptoid brush platform offers versatile surface modification, including adjustments to surface energy, passivation, preferential biomolecule attachment, and specific biomolecule binding. Importantly, the polypeptoid brush monolayers remain compatible with electron-beam lithographic patterning and retain their chemical characteristics even under harsh lithographic conditions. Electron-beam lithography is used over polypeptoid brushes to generate highly precise, binary nanoscale patterns with localized functionality for the selective immobilization (or passivation) of biomacromolecules, such as DNA origami or streptavidin, onto addressable arrays. This surface modification strategy with bioinspired, sequence-defined polypeptoid brushes enables monomer-level control over surface properties with a large parameter space of monomer chemistry and sequence and therefore is a highly versatile platform to precisely engineer semiconductor/bio interfaces for bioelectronics applications.

Modification of Al Surface via Acidic Treatment and its Impact on Plating and Stripping

Amorphous Al2 O3 film that naturally exists on any Al substrate is a critical bottleneck for the cyclic performance of metallic Al in rechargeable Al batteries. The so-called electron/ion insulator Al oxide slows down the anode's activation and hinders Al plating/stripping. The Al2 O3 film induces different surface properties (roughness and microstructure) on the metal. Al foils present two optically different sides (shiny and non-shiny), but their surface properties and influence on plating and stripping have not been studied so far. Compared to the shiny side, the non-shiny one has a higher (~28 %) surface roughness, and its greater concentration of active sites (for Al plating and stripping) yields higher current densities. Immersion pretreatments in Ionic-Liquid/AlCl3 -based electrolyte with various durations modify the surface properties of each side, forming an electrode-electrolyte interphase layer rich in Al, Cl, and N. The created interphase layer provides more tunneling paths for better Al diffusion upon plating and stripping. After 500 cycles, dendritic Al deposition, generated active sites, and the continuous removal of the Al metal and oxide cause accelerated local corrosion and electrode pulverization. We highlight the mechanical surface properties of cycled Al foil, considering the role of immersion pretreatment and the differences between the two sides.

Plasma Surface Treatment of Cu Current Collectors for Improving the Electrochemical Performance of Si Anodes

The practical utilization of Si electrodes is hindered by their substantial volume expansion during alloying and dealloying processes, which causes mechanical damage and separation from Cu current collectors. To alleviate the problem of Si composite detachment from Cu current collectors, the surface of the Cu current collectors is modified using atmospheric oxygen plasma. Plasma treatment improves the wetting ability of the Cu current collectors and, consequently, the coating quality of the Si electrodes. The uniform distribution of the Si electrode components reduces the sheet resistance and improves the adhesion properties of the Si electrodes containing surface-modified Cu current collectors. As a result, the volume expansion of Si during alloying and dealloying is reduced; this results in an excellent rate capability of 1584 mA h g-1 at a current density of 3.6 A g-1 (135% that of bare Cu) and excellent cycle performance of 1545 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles (Si electrodes with bare Cu exhibit 930 mA h g-1). Therefore, the developed plasma treatment method for Cu current collectors is expected to be an economical and efficient approach for improving the Li-ion battery performance.

Shear Bond Strength to Enamel, Mechanical Properties and Cellular Studies of Fiber-Reinforced Composites Modified by Depositing SiO2 Nanofilms on Quartz Fibers via Atomic Layer Deposition

Introduction

Poor interfacial bonding between the fibers and resin matrix in fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) is a significant drawback of the composites. To enhance the mechanical properties of FRC, fibers were modified by depositing SiO2 nanofilms via the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. This study aims to evaluate the effect of ALD treatment of the fibers on the mechanical properties of the FRCs.

Methods

The quartz fibers were modified by depositing different cycles (50, 100, 200, and 400) of SiO2 nanofilms via the ALD technique and FRCs were proposed from the modified fibers. The morphologies, surface characterizations of nanofilms, mechanical properties, and cytocompatibility of FRCs were systematically investigated. Moreover, the shear bond strength (SBS) of FRCs to human enamel was also evaluated.

Results

The SEM and SE results showed that the ALD-deposited SiO2 nanofilms have good conformality and homogeneity. According to the results of FTIR and TGA, SiO2 nanofilms and quartz fiber surfaces had good chemical combinations. Three-point bending tests with FRCs showed that the deposited SiO2 nanofilms effectively improved FRCs' strength and Group D underwent 100 deposition cycles and had the highest flexural strength before and after aging. Furthermore, the strength of the FRCs demonstrated a crescendo-decrescendo tendency with SiO2 nanofilm thickness increasing. The SBS results also showed that Group D had outstanding performance. Moreover, the results of cytotoxicity experiments such as cck8, LDH and Elisa, etc., showed that the FRCs have good cytocompatibility.

Conclusion

Changing the number of ALD reaction cycles affects the mechanical properties of FRCs, which may be related to the stress relaxation and fracture between SiO2 nanofilm layers and the built-up internal stresses in the nanofilms. Eventually, the SiO2 nanofilms could enhance the FRCs' mechanical properties and performance to enamel by improving the interfacial bonding strength, and have good cytocompatibility.

Impact of surface characteristics on the peri-implant microbiome in health and disease

BACKGROUND

Because little is known about the impact of implant surface modifications on the peri-implant microbiome, we aimed to examine peri-implant communities in various surface types in order to better understand the impact of these surfaces on the development of peri-implantitis (PI).

METHODS

One hundred and six systemically healthy individuals with anodized (AN), hydroxyapatite-coated (HA), or sandblasted acid-etched (SLA) implants that were >6 months in function were recruited and categorized into health (H) or PI. Peri-implant biofilm was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and compared between health/disease and HA/SLA/AN using community-level and taxa-level metrics.

RESULTS

Healthy implants did not demonstrate significant differences in clustering, alpha- or beta-diversity based on surface modification. AN and HA surfaces displayed significant differences between health and PI (p < 0.05); however, such a clustering was not evident with SLA (p > 0.05). AN and HA surfaces also differed in the magnitude and diversity of differences between health and PI. Six species belonging to the genera Shuttleworthia, Scardovia, and Prevotella demonstrated lower abundances in AN implants with PI, and 18 species belonging to the genera Fretibacterium, Tannerella, Treponema, and Fusobacterium were elevated, while in HA implants with PI, 20 species belonging to the genera Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, Veillonella, Rothia, and family Ruminococcaceae were depleted and Peptostreptococcaceae, Atopobiaceae, Veillonellaceae, Porphyromonadaceae, Desulfobulbaceae, and order Synergistales were enriched.

CONCLUSIONS

Within the limitations of this study, we demonstrate that implant surface can differentially modify the disease-associated microbiome, suggesting that surface topography must be considered in the multi-factorial etiology of peri-implant diseases.

Ozone-Induced Rapid and Green Synthesis of Polydopamine Coatings with High Uniformity and Enhanced Stability

The development of green, controllable, and simplified pathways for rapid dopamine polymerization holds significant importance in the field of polydopamine (PDA) surface chemistry. In this study, a green strategy is successfully devised to accelerate and control the polymerization of dopamine through the introduction of ozone (O3 ). The findings reveal that ozone serves as an eco-friendly trigger, significantly accelerating the dopamine polymerization process across a broad pH range, spanning from 4.0 to 10.0. Notably, the deposition rate of PDA coatings on a silicon wafer reaches an impressive value of ≈64.8 nm h-1 (pH 8.5), which is 30 times higher than that of traditional air-assisted PDA and comparable to the fastest reported method. Furthermore, ozone exhibits the ability to accelerate dopamine polymerization even under low temperatures. It also enables control over the inhibition-initiation of the polymerization process by regulating the "ON/OFF" mode of the ozone gas. Moreover, the ozone-induced PDA coatings demonstrate exceptional characteristics, including high homogeneity, good hydrophilicity, and remarkable chemical and mechanical stability. Additionally, the ozone-induced PDA coatings can be rapidly and effectively deposited onto a wide range of substrates, particularly those that are adhesion-resistant, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

A 2.4 V Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery Enabled by the Photoelectrochemical Effect of a Modified BiOI Photocathode: Shattering the Shackle of the Electrochemical Window of an Aqueous Electrolyte

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries emerge as a promising energy storage system with merits of high security, abundance, and being environmentally benign. But the low operating voltages of aqueous electrolytes restrict their energy densities. Previous reports have mostly focused on modifying the electrolytes to enlarge the operating voltages of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. However, either extra-expensive salts or potential safety hazards of organic additives are considered to be adverse for practical large-scale applications. Here, a proof-of-concept to enlarge the operating voltage of an aqueous zinc-ion battery by incorporating a well-designed semiconductor photocathode is proposed, which produces a photovoltage (Vph) across the semiconductor/liquid junction (SCLJ) interface to elevate the output voltage of zinc-ion battery under irradiation. The operating voltage of an aqueous zinc-ion battery can be markedly raised from 1.78 (thermodynamic limit) to 2.4 V when a BiOI nanoflake array photocathode with good surface modification is introduced, achieving a round-trip efficiency of 114.3% and a 34.8% increase of energy density compared to the theoretical value. The successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction modified surface effectively passivates surface trap defects of the BiOI photocathode and thus enlarges its Vph from 60 to 240 mV under irradiation. This study provides a design to enlarge the output voltages of aqueous zinc-ion batteries and other energy storage systems, providing insight into widening the voltage window, which is that the operating voltages are determined by photocathode under irradiation and not restricted by the electrochemical stability window of dilute aqueous electrolytes.

Efficient Approach for Direct Robust Surface Grafting of Polyethyleneimine onto a Polyester Surface during Moulding

This paper uses a very effective way for surface modification of thermoplastic polymers during moulding. It is based on a grafting reaction between a thin layer of a functional polymer, deposited on a substrate in advance, and a polymer melt. In this paper, a glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) that was brought in contact with a polyethyleneimine layer during fused filament fabrication is investigated. The focus of this paper is the investigation of the reaction product. Grafting was realised by the formation of stable amide bonds by amidation of ester groups in the main chain of a PETG. XPS investigations revealed that the conversion of amino groups was very high, the distribution was even, and the quantity of amino groups per polyester surface area was still very high. The surface properties of the produced polyester part were mainly characterised by polyethyleneimine. The grafting was able to resist several cycles of extraction in alkaline solutions. The stability was only limited by saponification of the polyester. The degree of surface modification was dependent on the molar mass of polyethyleneimine. This could be rationalised, because grafting only occurred with the one polyethyleneimine molecule that is in close vicinity to the polyester surface when both components come in contact. Fused deposition modelling was chosen as the model process with control over each processing step. However, any other moulding process may be applied, particularly injection moulding for mass production.

Surface treatment of PET multifilament textile for biomedical applications: roughness modification and fibroblast viability assessment

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of tuning the topography of textile surfaces for biomedical applications towards modified cell-substrate interactions.

METHODS

For that purpose, a supercritical Nitrogen N2 jet was used to spray glass particles on multi-filament polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarns and on woven fabrics. The influence of the jet projection parameters such as the jet pressure (P) and the standoff distance (SoD) on the roughness was investigated.

RESULTS

The impact of the particles created local filament ruptures on the treated surfaces towards hairiness increase. The results show that the treatment increases the roughness by up to 17 % at P 300 bars and SoD 300 mm while the strength of the material is slightly decreased. The biological study brings out that proliferation can be slightly limited on a more hairy surface, and is increased when the surface is more flat. After 10 days of fibroblast culture, the cells covered the entire surface of the fabrics and had mainly grown unidirectionally, forming cell clusters oriented along the longitudinal axis of the textile yarns. Clusters were generated at yarn crossings.

CONCLUSIONS

This approach revealed that the particle projection technology can help tuning the cell proliferation on a textile surface.

Effect of Low-Temperature Oxygen Plasma Treatment of Titanium Alloy Surface on Tannic Acid Coating Deposition

In this study, the effect of low-temperature oxygen plasma treatment with various powers of a titanium alloy surface on the structural and morphological properties of a substrate and the deposition of a tannic acid coating was investigated. The surface characteristics of the titanium alloy were evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. Following this, the tannic acid coatings were deposited on the titanium alloy substrates and the structural and morphological properties of the tannic acid coatings deposited were subject to characterization by XPS, SEM, and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) measurements. The results show that the low-temperature oxygen plasma treatment of titanium alloys leads to the formation of titanium dioxides that contain -OH groups on the surface being accompanied by a reduction in carbon, which imparts hydrophilicity to the titanium substrate, and the effect increases with the applied plasma power. The performed titanium alloy substrate modification translates into the quality of the deposited tannic acid coating standing out by higher uniformity of the coating, lower number of defects indicating delamination or incomplete bonding of the coating with the substrate, lower number of cracks, thinner cracks, and higher thickness of the tannic acid coatings compared to the non-treated titanium alloy substrate. A similar effect is observed as the applied plasma power increases.

Drug release control and anti-inflammatory effect of biodegradable polymer surface modified by gas phase chemical functional reaction

The plasma technique has been widely used to modify the surfaces of materials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the probability of controlling the prednisolone delivery velocity on a polylactic acid (PLA) surface modified by plasma surface treatment. Surface modification of PLA was performed at a low-pressure radio frequency under conditions of 100 W power, 50 mTorr chamber pressure, 100-200 sccm of flow rate, and Ar, O2, and CH4gases. The plasma surface-modified PLA was characterized using scanning emission microscope, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurements.In vitroevaluations were performed to determine cellular response, drug release behavior, and anti-inflammatory effects. The PLA surface morphology was changed to a porous structure (with a depth of approximately 100 μm) and the surface roughness was also significantly increased. The XPS results demonstrated higher oxygenized carbon contents than those in the non-treated PLA group. The prednisolone holding capacity increased and the release was relatively prolonged in the surface-modified PLA group compared to that in the non-treated PLA group. In addition, cell migration and proliferation significantly increased after PLA treatment alone. The activity of cytokines such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α), interleukin (IL-1β), and IL-6 were considerably reduced in the plasma-treated and prednisolone holding group. Taken together, surface-modified PLA by plasma can provide an alternative approach to conventional physicochemical approaches for sustained anti-inflammatory drug release.

Nitrogen Plasma Treatment of Composite Materials Based on Polylactic Acid and Hydroxyapatite

The effect of surface modification by an arc discharge plasma in a nitrogen flow with treatment durations of 5 and 10 min on the physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of the surface of composites based on polylactic acid and hydroxyapatite (PLA/HA) with different mass ratios (80/20, 70/30, 60/40) has been investigated. The aim of this work was to show the correlation between the changes of the physicochemical characteristics (chemical compound, morphology, wettability) of the surface layer of the PLA/HA composites and the cell viability (macrophages) in the presence of the plasma-modified materials. The dependence of alterations of the functional properties (wettability, biocompatibility) on the change in the chemical composition under the plasma exposure has been established. The chemical composition was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the surface morphology was researched with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the wettability of the composite's surface was analyzed by measuring the contact angle and surface energy calculation. In addition, the viability of macrophages was investigated when the macrophages from three donors interacted with a modified PLA/HA surface. It was found that the formation of the new functional groups, -C-N and N-C=O/C=O, improves the wettability of the surface of the composites and promotes the viability of macrophages in the presence of the composite materials. The fundamental principles for obtaining promising materials with the required properties for eliminating bone defects have been created.

Oral Delivery of the Vancomycin Derivative FU002 by a Surface-Modified Liposomal Nanocarrier

Oral delivery of peptide therapeutics faces multiple challenges due to their instability in the gastrointestinal tract and low permeation capability. In this study, the aim is to develop a liposomal nanocarrier formulation to enable the oral delivery of the vancomycin-peptide derivative FU002. FU002 is a promising, resistance-breaking, antibiotic which exhibits poor oral bioavailability, limiting its potential therapeutic use. To increase its oral bioavailability, FU002 is incorporated into tetraether lipid-stabilized liposomes modified with cyclic cell-penetrating peptides on the liposomal surface. This liposomal formulation shows strong binding to Caco-2 cells without exerting cytotoxic effects in vitro. Pharmacokinetics studies in vivo in rats reveal increased oral bioavailability of liposomal FU002 when compared to the free drug. In vitro and in vivo antimicrobial activity of FU002 are preserved in the liposomal formulation. As a highlight, oral administration of liposomal FU002 results in significant therapeutic efficacy in a murine systemic infection model. Thus, the presented nanotechnological approach provides a promising strategy for enabling oral delivery of this highly active vancomycin derivative.

Reactive Amine Functionalized Microelectrode Arrays Provide Short-Term Benefit but Long-Term Detriment to In Vivo Recording Performance

Intracortical microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are used for recording neural signals. However, indwelling devices result in chronic neuroinflammation, which leads to decreased recording performance through degradation of the device and surrounding tissue. Coating the MEAs with bioactive molecules is being explored to mitigate neuroinflammation. Such approaches often require an intermediate functionalization step such as (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), which serves as a linker. However, the standalone effect of this intermediate step has not been previously characterized. Here, we investigated the effect of coating MEAs with APTES by comparing APTES-coated to uncoated controls in vivo and ex vivo. First, we measured water contact angles between silicon uncoated and APTES-coated substrates to verify the hydrophilic characteristics of the APTES coating. Next, we implanted MEAs in the motor cortex (M1) of Sprague-Dawley rats with uncoated or APTES-coated devices. We assessed changes in the electrochemical impedance and neural recording performance over a chronic implantation period of 16 weeks. Additionally, histology and bulk gene expression were analyzed to understand further the reactive tissue changes arising from the coating. Results showed that APTES increased the hydrophilicity of the devices and decreased electrochemical impedance at 1 kHz. APTES coatings proved detrimental to the recording performance, as shown by a constant decay up to 16 weeks postimplantation. Bulk gene analysis showed differential changes in gene expression between groups that were inconclusive with regard to the long-term effect on neuronal tissue. Together, these results suggest that APTES coatings are ultimately detrimental to chronic neural recordings. Furthermore, interpretations of studies using APTES as a functionalization step should consider the potential consequences if the final functionalization step is incomplete.

Enhancing Essential Oil Extraction from Lavandin Grosso Flowers via Plasma Treatment

This study explores the impact of plasma treatment on Lavandin Grosso flowers and its influence on the extraction of essential oils (EOs) via hydrodistillation. Short plasma treatment times enhance the yield of EO extraction from 3.19% in untreated samples to 3.44%, corresponding to 1 min of plasma treatment, while longer treatment times (10 min) show diminishing returns to 3.07% of yield extraction. Chemical characterization (GC/MS and ATR-FTIR) indicates that plasma treatments do not significantly alter the chemical composition of the extracted EOs, preserving their aromatic qualities. Investigations into plasma-surface interactions reveal changes at the nanometer level, with XPS confirming alterations in the surface chemistry of Lavandin Grosso flowers by reducing surface carbon and increasing oxygen content, ultimately resulting in an increased presence of hydrophilic groups. The presence of hydrophilic groups enhances the interaction between the surface membrane of the glandular trichomes on Lavandin Grosso flowers and water vapor, consequently increasing the extraction of EOs. Furthermore, microscopic SEM examinations demonstrate that plasma treatments do not affect the morphology of glandular trichomes, emphasizing that surface modifications primarily occur at the nanoscale. This study underscores the potential of plasma technology as a tool to enhance EO yields from botanical sources while maintaining their chemical integrity.

Lithiophilic Chemistry Facilitated Ultrathin Lithium for Scalable Prelithiation

Prelithiation plays a crucial role in advancing the development of high-energy-density batteries, and ultrathin lithium (UTL) has been proven to be a promising anode prelithiation reagent. However, there remains a need to explore an adjustable, efficient, and cost-effective method for manufacturing UTL. In this study, we introduce a method for producing UTL with adjustable thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 10 μm through blade coating of molten lithium on poly(vinylidene fluoride)-modified copper current collectors. By employing the transfer-printing method, prelithiated graphite and Si-C composite electrodes are prepared, which exhibit significantly improved initial Coulombic efficiencies of 99.60% and 99.32% in half-cells, respectively. Moreover, the energy densities of Li(NiCoMn)1/3O2 and LiFePO4 full cells assembled with the prelithiated graphite electrodes increase by 13.1% and 23.6%, respectively.

Facile Bond Exchanging Strategy for Engineering Wet Adhesion and Antioxidant/Antibacterial Thin Layer over a Dynamic Hydrogel via the Carbon Dots Derived from Tannic Acid/ε-Polylysine

Adhesive hydrogels, playing an essential role in stretchable electronics, soft robotics, tissue engineering, and so forth, upon functioning often need to adhere to various substrates in wet conditions and simultaneously exhibit antibacterial/antioxidant properties while possessing the intrinsic stretchability and elasticity of the hydrogel network intact. Therefore, simple approaches to conveniently access adhesive hydrogels with multifunctional surfaces are being pursued. Herein, a facile strategy has been proposed to construct multifunctional adhesive hydrogels via surface engineering of a multifunctional carbon dot (CD)-decorated polymeric thin layer by dynamic bond exchange. By this strategy, a double cross-linked network hydrogel of polyacrylamide (PAM) and oxidized dextran (ODA) was engineered with a unique dense layer over the Schiff base hydrogel matrix by aqueous solution immersion of PA-120, versatile CDs derived from tannic acid (TA) and ε-polylysine (PL). Without any additional agents, the PA-120 CDs with residual polyphenolic/catechol and amine moieties were incorporated into the surface structure of the hydrogel network by the combined action of the Schiff base and hydrogen bonds to form a dense surface layer that can exhibit high wet adhesive performance via the amine-polyphenol/catechol pair. The armor-like dense architecture also endowed hydrogels with considerably enhanced tensile/compression properties and excellent antioxidant/antibacterial abilities. Besides, the single-sided modified Janus hydrogel and completely surface-modified hydrogel can be flexibly developed through this approach. This strategy will provide new insights into the preparation and application of surface-modified hydrogels featuring multiple functions and tunable interfacial properties.

Cyanuric Acid-Functionalized Perovskite Nanocrystals toward Low Interface Impedance, High Environmental Stability, and Superior Electrochemiluminescence

Perovskite nanocrystals (PNs) have received much attention as luminescence materials in the field of electrochemiluminescence (ECL). However, as one key factor for determining the optoelectronic properties of the surface state of PNs, the surface passivation layer of PNs has enormous difficulty in simultaneously meeting the requirements of high ECL efficiency, conductivity, and stability. Herein, an effective surface modification strategy with cyanuric acid (CA) is used to solve such issue. As confirmed, the CA molecules are chemically anchored onto the surface of PNs via the Lewis interaction between π electrons of the triazine ring and the empty orbit of Pb2+. Benefiting from the above interaction, the electrochemical impedance of PNs is decreased greatly without the loss of light-emitting efficiency. Moreover, the stability of PNs under O2 exposure is improved by almost sixfold. These improvements are confirmed to be beneficial for enhancing the ECL behaviors of PNs under electrochemical operation. Upon cathode ECL driving conditions in aqueous media, the ECL intensity and efficiency of PNs are increased to 200 and 170%, respectively. This work provides a new modification strategy to holistically improve the ECL performance of PNs, which is instructive to exploring robust perovskite nanomaterials for electrochemical applications.

Surface Modification of Silicon Nanowires with Siloxane Molecules for High-Performance Hydrovoltaic Devices

Hydrovoltaic devices (HDs) based on silicon nanowires (SiNWs) have attracted significant attention due to their potential of high output power and good compatibility with Si-based photovoltaic devices for integrated power systems. However, it remains a major challenge to further improve the output performance of SiNW HDs for practical applications. Here, a new strategy to modify the surface of SiNWs with siloxane molecules is proposed to improve the output performance of the SiNW HDs. After modification, both the open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current density (Jsc) of n-type SiNW HDs can be improved by approximately 30%, while the output power density can be greatly increased by over 200%. With siloxane modification, Si-OH groups on the surface of typical SiNWs are replaced by Si-O-Si chemical bonds that have a weaker electron-withdrawing capability. More free electrons in n-type SiNWs are liberated from surface bound states and participate in directed flow induced by water evaporation, thereby improving the output performance of HDs. The improved performance is significant for system integration applications as it reduces the number of required devices. Three siloxane-modified SiNW HDs in series are able to drive a 2 V light-emitting diode (LED), whereas four unmodified devices in series are initially needed for the same task. This work provides a simple yet effective strategy for surface modification to improve the output performance of SiNW HDs. Further research into the effect of different surface modifications on the performance of SiNW HDs will greatly promote their performance enhancement and practical applications.

Electrografting of Phenyl Phosphate Layers onto Glassy Carbon for Tuning Catalytic Activity toward the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

In this study, we explored the surface modification of a glassy carbon electrode through the electrografting of 4-Aminophenyl phosphate, which features heteroatoms and ionic properties. The electrochemical grafting process involves reducing in situ-generated diazonium derivatives. The primary objective of this research was to immobilize organic layers and assess their electrochemical and surface properties. Subsequently, the generated surface serves as a template for the electrochemical growth of Pd and Co nanoparticles on functionalized electrodes. The electrocatalytic performances of these hybrid electrodes in driving the hydrogen evolution reaction were investigated. The obtained results indicate an enhancement in the electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrodes, where lower overpotential and higher stability were observed when the catalyst was electrodeposited onto the attached ionic layer. These findings highlight the synergistic effect between the attached phenyl phosphate moieties and electrocatalysts.

A Facile Surface Modification Scheme for Medical-Grade Titanium and Polypropylene Using a Novel Mussel-Inspired Biomimetic Polymer with Cationic Quaternary Ammonium Functionalities for Antibacterial Application

Medical device-associated infection remains a critical problem in the healthcare setting. Different clinical- or device-related methods have been attempted to reduce the infection rate. Among these approaches, creating a surface with bactericidal cationic functionality has been proposed. To do so, a sophisticated multi-step chemical procedure would be needed. Instead, a simple immersion approach was utilized in this investigation to render the titanium and polypropylene surface with the quaternary ammonium functionality by using a mussel-inspired novel lab-synthesized biomimetic catechol-terminated polymer, PQA-C8. The chemical oxidants, CuSO4/H2O2, as well as dopamine, were added into the novel PQA-C8 polymer immersion solution for one-step surface modification. Additionally, a two-step immersion scheme, in which the polypropylene substrate was first immersed in the dopamine solution and then in the PQA-C8 solution, was also attempted. Surface analysis results indicated the surface characteristics of the modified substrates were affected by the immersion solution formulation as well as the procedure utilized. The antibacterial assay has shown the titanium substrates modified by the one-step dopamine + PQA-C8 mixtures with the oxidants added and the polypropylene modified by the two-step scheme exhibited bacterial reduction percentages greater than 90% against both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli and these antibacterial substrates were non-cytotoxic.

Development of Taste Sensor with Lipid/Polymer Membranes for Detection of Umami Substances Using Surface Modification

A taste sensor employs various lipid/polymer membranes with specific physicochemical properties for taste classification and evaluation. However, phosphoric acid di(2-ethylhexyl) ester (PAEE), employed as one of the lipids for the taste sensors, exhibits insufficient selectivity for umami substances. The pH of sample solutions impacts the dissociation of lipids to influence the membrane potential, and the response to astringent substances makes accurate measurement of umami taste difficult. This study aims to develop a novel taste sensor for detecting umami substances like monosodium L-glutamate (MSG) through surface modification, i.e., a methodology previously applied to taste sensors for non-charged bitter substance measurement. Four kinds of modifiers were tested as membrane-modifying materials. By comparing the results obtained from these modifiers, the modifier structure suitable for measuring umami substances was identified. The findings revealed that the presence of carboxyl groups at para-position of the benzene ring, as well as intramolecular H-bonds between the carboxyl group and hydroxyl group, significantly affect the effectiveness of a modifier in the umami substance measurement. The taste sensor treated with this type of modifier showed excellent selectivity for umami substances.

Topographically and Chemically Enhanced Textile Polycaprolactone Scaffolds for Tendon and Ligament Tissue Engineering

The use of tissue engineering to address the shortcomings of current procedures for tendons and ligaments is promising, but it requires a suitable scaffold that meets various mechanical, degradation-related, scalability-related, and biological requirements. Macroporous textile scaffolds made from appropriate fiber material have the potential to fulfill the first three requirements. This study aimed to investigate the biocompatibility, sterilizability, and functionalizability of a multilayer braided scaffold. These macroporous scaffolds with dimensions similar to those of the human anterior cruciate ligament consist of fibers with appropriate tensile strength and degradation behavior melt-spun from Polycaprolactone (PCL). Two different cross-sectional geometries resulting in significantly different specific surface areas and morphologies were used at the fiber level, and a Chitosan-graft-PCL (CS-g-PCL) surface modification was applied to the melt-spun substrates for the first time. All scaffolds elicited a positive cell response, and the CS-g-PCL modification provided a platform for incorporating functionalization agents such as drug delivery systems for growth factors, which were successfully released in therapeutically effective quantities. The fiber geometry was found to be a variable that could be manipulated to control the amount released. Therefore, scaled, surface-modified textile scaffolds are a versatile technology that can successfully address the complex requirements of tissue engineering for ligaments and tendons, as well as other structures.

Advancements and Challenges in High-Capacity Ni-Rich Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Nowadays, lithium-ion batteries are undoubtedly known as the most promising rechargeable batteries. However, these batteries face some big challenges, like not having enough energy and not lasting long enough, that should be addressed. Ternary Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMnz]O2 and Li[NixCoyAlz]O2 cathode materials stand as the ideal candidate for a cathode active material to achieve high capacity and energy density, low manufacturing cost, and high operating voltage. However, capacity gain from Ni enrichment is nullified by the concurrent fast capacity fading because of issues such as gas evolution, microcracks propagation and pulverization, phase transition, electrolyte decomposition, cation mixing, and dissolution of transition metals at high operating voltage, which hinders their commercialization. In order to tackle these problems, researchers conducted many strategies, including elemental doping, surface coating, and particle engineering. This review paper mainly talks about origins of problems and their mechanisms leading to electrochemical performance deterioration for Ni-rich cathode materials and modification approaches to address the problems.

Bioinspired Organic Porous Coupling Agent for Enhancement of Nanoparticle Dispersion and Interfacial Strength

Composite materials have significantly advanced with the integration of inorganic nanoparticles as fillers in polymers. Achieving fine dispersion of these nanoparticles within the composites, however, remains a challenge. This study presents a novel solution inspired by the natural structure of Xanthium. We have developed a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM)-based porous coupling agent, named PCA. PCA's rigid backbone structure enhances interfacial interactions through a unique intermolecular interlocking mechanism. This approach notably improves the dispersion of SiO2 nanoparticles in various organic solvents and low-polarity polymers. Significantly, PCA-modified SiO2 nanoparticles embedded in polyisoprene rubber showed enhanced mechanical properties. The Young's modulus increases to 30.7 MPa, compared to 5.4 MPa in hexadecyltrimethoxysilane-modified nanoparticles. Further analysis shows that PCA-modified composites not only become stiffer but also gain strength and ductility. This research demonstrates a novel biomimetic strategy for enhancing interfacial interactions in composites, potentially leading to stronger, more versatile composite materials.

Annealing Ti3C2Tz MXenes to Control Surface Chemistry and Friction

Although surface terminations (such as ═O, -Cl, -F, and -OH) on MXene nanosheets strongly influence their functional properties, synthesis of MXenes with desired types and distribution of those terminations is still challenging. Here, it is demonstrated that thermal annealing helps in removing much of the terminal groups of molten salt-etched multilayered (ML) Ti3C2Tz. In this study, the chloride terminations of molten salt-etched ML-Ti3C2Tz were removed via thermal annealing at increased temperatures under an inert (argon) atmosphere. This thermal annealing created some bare sites available for further functionalization of Ti3C2Tz. XRD, EDS, and XPS measurements confirm the removal of much of the terminal groups of ML-Ti3C2Tz. Here, the annealed ML-Ti3C2Tz was refunctionalized by -OH groups and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES), which was confirmed by FTIR. The -OH and APTES surface-modified ML-Ti3C2Tz are evaluated as a solid lubricant, exhibiting ∼70.1 and 66.7% reduction in friction compared to a steel substrate, respectively. This enhanced performance is attributed to the improved interaction or adhesion of functionalized ML-Ti3C2Tz with the substrate material. This approach allows for the effective surface modification of MXenes and control of their functional properties.

In Situ Constructing Ultrastable Mechanical Integrity of Single-Crystalline LiNi0.9 Co0.05 Mn0.05 O2 Cathode by Interior and Exterior Decoration Strategy

Planar gliding along with anisotropic lattice strain of single-crystalline nickel-rich cathodes (SCNRC) at highly delithiated states will induce severe delamination cracking that seriously deteriorates LIBs' cyclability. To address these issues, a novel lattice-matched MgTiO3 (MTO) layer, which exhibits same lattice structure as Ni-rich cathodes, is rationally constructed on single-crystalline LiNi0.9 Co0.05 Mn0.05 O2 (SC90) for ultrastable mechanical integrity. Intensive in/ex situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations and finite element analysis suggest that the uniform MTO coating layer prevents direct contact between SC90 and organic electrolytes and enables rapid Li-ion diffusion with depressed Li-deficiency, thereby stabilizing the interfacial structure and accommodating the mechanical stress of SC90. More importantly, a superstructure is simultaneously formed in SC90, which can effectively alleviate the anisotropic lattice changes and decrease cation mobility during successive high-voltage de/intercalation processes. Therefore, the as-acquired MTO-modified SC90 cathode displays desirable capacity retention and high-voltage stability. When paired with commercial graphite anodes, the pouch-type cells with the MTO-modified SC90 can deliver a high capacity of 175.2 mAh g-1 with 89.8% capacity retention after 500 cycles. This lattice-matching coating strategy demonstrate a highly effective pathway to maintain the structural and interfacial stability in electrode materials, which can be a pioneering breakthrough in commercialization of Ni-rich cathodes.

Evaluation of Osteoconductive and Antimicrobial Properties of Novel Graphene on Dental Implants: An In Vitro Study

Introduction Graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a promising material in dentistry, leveraging its exceptional properties. This study evaluates the physicochemical attributes of GO and elucidates its derived biological properties. These encompass biocompatibility, antibacterial efficacy, as well as its influence on osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation processes. Understanding the intricate interplay between the physicochemical and biological aspects of GO provides valuable insights into its potential applications in various dental contexts. Materials and methods The study group (so; titanium discs surface coated with GO) and the control group (co; plain/uncoated machined titanium discs) were divided based on cell attachment and cell proliferation assays (n=60). These groups were further divided into subgroups (n=30) based on the tested time intervals, specifically 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours. The study and controlgroups were further subdivided into three subgroups (n=10) based on the microorganisms tested i.e Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia and Fusobacteria nucleatum. Results The results of this in vitro study suggest that GO-coated titanium dental implants have both increased osteogenic potential and antimicrobial efficacy. Graphene has good potential as a promising alternative to traditional surface treatments, and a graphene-coated implant can be used for enhanced osseointegration.  Conclusion The osteogenic potential and the cell attachment were higher on titanium surfaces coated with GO nanoparticles when compared to plain titanium discs at 24, 48 and 72 hours respectively.

Healthcare Monitoring Sensors Based on Organic Transistors: Surface/Interface Strategy and Performance

Organic transistors possess inherent advantages such as flexibility, biocompatibility, customizable chemical structures, solution-processability, and amplifying capabilities, making them highly promising for portable healthcare sensor applications. Through convenient and diverse modifications at the material and device surfaces or interfaces, organic transistors allow for a wide range of sensor applications spanning from chemical and biological to physical sensing. In this comprehensive review, the surface and interface engineering aspect associated with four types of typical healthcare sensors is focused. The device operation principles and sensing mechanisms are systematically analyzed and highlighted, and particularly surface/interface functionalization strategies that contribute to the enhancement of sensing performance are focused. An outlook and perspective on the critical issues and challenges in the field of healthcare sensing using organic transistors are provided as well.

Comparison of PED/PED Flex and PED Shield in the treatment of unruptured intracerebral aneurysms

OBJECTIVE

The object of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety profile of the Pipeline embolization device (PED)/Pipeline Flex embolization device (PED Flex) with that of the Pipeline Flex embolization device with Shield Technology (PED Shield). After introducing the first-generation PED and the second-generation PED Flex with its updated delivery system, the PED Shield was launched with a synthetic layer of phosphorylcholine surface modification to reduce thrombogenicity.

METHODS

This is a retrospective review of unruptured aneurysms treated with PED/PED Flex versus PED Shield between 2017 and 2022 at the authors' institution. Patients with ruptured aneurysms, adjunctive treatment, failed flow diverter deployment, and prior treatment of the target aneurysm were excluded. Baseline characteristics were collected for all patients, including age, sex, past medical history (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus), smoking status, aneurysm location, and aneurysm dimensions (neck, width, height) and morphology (saccular, nonsaccular). The primary outcome was procedural and periprocedural complication rates.

RESULTS

The study cohort comprised 200 patients with 200 aneurysms, including 150 aneurysms treated with the PED/PED Flex and 50 treated with the PED Shield. With respect to intraprocedural and periprocedural complications, length of stay, length of follow-up, and functional outcome at discharge, there was no significant difference between the two cohorts. At the midterm follow-up, the rate of in-stent stenosis (PED/PED Flex: 14.2% vs PED Shield: 14.6%, p = 0.927), aneurysm occlusion (complete occlusion: 79.5% vs 80.5%, respectively; neck remnant: 4.7% vs 12.2%; dome remnant: 15.7% vs 7.3%; p = 0.119), and the need for retreatment (5.3% vs 0%, p = 0.097) were comparable between the two cohorts.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that, as compared to first- and second-generation PED and PED Flex, the third-generation PED Shield offers similar rates of complications, aneurysm occlusion, and in-stent stenosis at the midterm follow-up.
