Gestational diabetes mellitus enhances cobalt placental transfer efficiency between mother and infant

Background: The fetal stage is pivotal for growth and development, making it susceptible to the adverse effects of prenatal metal(loid)s exposure. This study evaluated the influence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on the placental transfer efficiency (PTE) of metal(loid)s and thus assessed the associated risks of prenatal metal(loid)s exposure.

Materials and method: Designed as a case-control study, it incorporated 114 pregnant participants: 65 without complications and 49 diagnosed with GDM. We utilized inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to quantify seven metal(loid)s - manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), gallium (Ga), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) - in both maternal venous blood and umbilical cord blood.

Result: We compared metal(loid)s concentrations and their PTE in the maternal and cord blood between the two groups. Notably, Cu, Ga, As, and Co levels in the umbilical cord blood of the GDM group (657.9 ± 167.2 μg/L, 1.23 ± 0.34 μg/L, 5.19 ± 2.58 μg/L, 1.09 ± 2.03 μg/L) surpassed those of the control group, with PTE of Co showing a marked increase in GDM group (568.8 ± 150.4 μg/L, 1.05 ± 0.31 μg/L, 4.09 ± 2.54 μg/L, 0.47 ± 0.91 μg/L), with PTE of Co showing a marked increase in GDM group (p < 0.05). The PTE of Ni exhibited a reduction in the GDM group relative to the control group, yet this decrease did not reach statistical significance.

Conclusion: This study indicates that GDM can influence the placental transfer efficiency of certain metal(loid)s, leading to higher concentrations of Co, Cu, Ga, and As in the umbilical cord blood of the GDM group. The marked increase in the PTE of Co suggests a potential link to placental abnormal angiogenesis due to GDM.

adult population: results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

PURPOSE

Heavy metal exposure can cause impaired or reduced pathology in the kidneys, lungs, liver, and other vital organs. However, the relationship between heavy metal exposure and kidney stones has not been determined. The goal of this research was to determine the association between heavy metal exposure and kidney stones in a population of American adults in general.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We evaluated 29,201 individuals (≥20 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The association between heavy metal exposure and kidney stones was verified by multiple logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression. Dose-response curves were generated to analyze the relationship between heavy metal concentrations and the occurrence of kidney stones. Moreover, we used propensity score matching (PSM) to exclude the effect of confounding variables.

RESULTS

After a rigorous enrollment screening process, we included 8518 participants. Logistic regression showed that urinary cadmium (U-Cd) and urinary cobalt (U-Co) concentrations were significantly different in the kidney stone group before PSM (p < 0.001). Dose-response curves revealed that the occurrence of kidney stones increased significantly with increasing U-Cd and U-Co concentrations. After adjustment for covariates, only biomarkers of U-Co were linked to the occurrence of kidney stones. When the lowest quartile was used as a reference, the 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for kidney stones across the other quartiles were 1.015 (0.767-1.344), 1.409 (1.059-1.875), and 2.013 (1.505-2.693) for U-Cos (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

In the U.S. population, high U-Co levels are positively correlated with the potential risk of kidney stones.

High-performance, stable CoNi LDH@Ni foam composite membrane with innovative peroxymonosulfate activation for 2,4-dichlorophenol destruction

In this study, the cobalt-nickel layered double hydroxides (CoNi LDH) were synthesized with a variety of Co/Ni mass ratio, as CoxNiy LDHs. In comparison, Co1Ni3 LDH presented the best peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation efficiency for 2,4-dichlorophenol removal. Meanwhile, CoNi LDH@Nickel foam (CoNi LDH@NF) composite membrane was constructed for enhancing the stability of catalytic performance. Herein, CoNi LDH@NF-PMS system exerted high degradation efficiency of 99.22% within 90 min for 2,4-DCP when [PMS]0 = 0.4 g/L, Co1Ni3 LDH@NF = 2 cm × 2 cm (0.2 g/L), reaction temperature = 298 K. For the surface morphology and structure of the catalyst, it was demonstrated that the CoNi LDH@NF composite membrane possessed abundant cavity structure, good specific surface area and sufficient active sites. Importantly, ·OH, SO4·- and 1O2 played the primary role in the CoNi LDH@NF-PMS system for 2,4-DCP decomposition, which revealed the PMS activation mechanism in CoNi LDH@NF-PMS system. Hence, this study eliminated the stability and adaptability of CoNi LDH@NF composite membrane, proposing a new theoretical basis of PMS heterogeneous catalysts selection.

Nanozyme-assisted molecularly imprinted polymer-based indirect competitive ELISA for the detection of marine biotoxin

Saxitoxin (STX), which is produced by certain dinoflagellate species, is a type of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin that poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. Therefore, developing a technology for the convenient and cost-effective detection of STX is imperative. In this study, we developed an affinity peptide-imprinted polymer-based indirect competitive ELISA (ic-ELISA) without using enzyme-toxin conjugates. AuNP/Co3O4@Mg/Al cLDH was synthesized by calcining AuNP/ZIF-67@Mg/Al LDH, which was obtained by combining AuNPs, ZIF-67, and flower-like Mg/Al LDH. This synthesized nanozyme exhibited high catalytic activity (Km = 0.24 mM for TMB and 132.5 mM for H2O2). The affinity peptide-imprinted polymer (MIP) was imprinted with an STX-specific template peptide (STX MIP) on a multi-well microplate and then reacted with an STX-specific signal peptide (STX SP). The interaction between the STX SP and MIP was detected using a streptavidin-coated nanozyme (SA-AuNP/Co3O4@Mg/Al cLDH). The developed MIP-based ic-ELISA exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity, with a limit of detection of 3.17 ng/mL (equivalent: 0.317 μg/g). Furthermore, the system was validated using a commercial ELISA kit and mussel tissue samples, and it demonstrated a high STX recovery with a low coefficient of variation. These results imply that the developed ic-ELISA can be used to detect STX in real samples.

Zeolitic imidazole framework-derived rich-Zn-Co3O4/N-doped porous carbon with multiple enzyme-like activities for synergistic cancer therapy

Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-centered chemodynamic therapy (CDT) holds significant potential for tumor-specific treatment. However, insufficient endogenous H2O2 and extra glutathione within tumor microenvironment (TME) severely deteriorate the CDT's effectiveness. Herein, rich-Zn-Co3O4/N-doped porous carbon (Zn-Co3O4/NC) was fabricated by two-step pyrolysis, and applied to build high-efficiency nano-platform for synergistic cancer therapy upon combination with glucose oxidase (GOx), labeled Zn-Co3O4/NC-GOx for clarity. Specifically, the multiple enzyme-like activities of the Zn-Co3O4/NC were scrutinously investigated, including peroxidase-like activity to convert H2O2 to O2∙-, catalase-like activity to decompose H2O2 into O2, and oxidase-like activity to transform O2 to O2∙-, which achieved the CDT through the catalytic cascade reaction. Simultaneously, GOx reacted with intracellular glucose to produce gluconic acid and H2O2, realizing starvation therapy. In the acidic TME, the Zn-Co3O4/NC-GOx rapidly caused intracellular Zn2+ pool overload and disrupted cellular homeostasis for ion-intervention therapy. Additionally, the Zn-Co3O4/NC exhibited glutathione peroxidase-like activity, which consumed glutathione in tumor cells and reduced the ROS consumption for ferroptosis. The tumor treatments offer some constructive insights into the nanozyme-mediated catalytic medicine, coupled by avoiding the TME limitations.

Ultrasensitive and label-free electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of the ovarian cancer biomarker CA125 based on CuCo-ONSs@AuNPs nanocomposites

Cancer antigen 125 (CA125) is pivotal as a tumor marker in early ovarian cancer prevention and diagnosis. In this work, we introduced an ultrasensitive label-free electrochemical immunosensor tailored for CA125 detection, leveraging nanogold-functionalized copper-cobalt oxide nanosheets (CuCo-ONSs@AuNPs) as nanocomposites. For the inaugural application, copper-cobalt oxide nanosheets delivered the requisite DPV electrochemical response for the immunosensors. Their large specific surface area and commendable electrical conductivity amplify electron transfer and enable significant gold nanoparticle loading. Concurrently, AuNPs offer a plethora of active sites, facilitating easy immobilization of biomolecules via the bond between amino groups and AuNPs. We employed scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize the nanomaterials' surface morphology and elemental composition. The electrochemical sensor response signals were ascertained using differential pulse voltammetry. Under optimal conditions, the immunosensor exhibited a linear detection range from 1×10-7 U/mL to 1×10-3 U/mL and a detection limit of 3.9×10-8 U/mL (S/N=3). The proposed label-free electrochemical immunosensor furnishes a straightforward, dependable, and sensitive approach for CA125 quantification and stands as a promising method for clinical detection of other tumor markers.

A triple read-out visible biosensing platform based on multifunctional nanozyme and bipolar electrode for multi-mode detection and imaging of CEA

In this paper, a proposal of closed bipolar electrode (BPE) and nanozyme based multi-mode biosensing platform is first presented. As a novel integrated chip, multi-mode-BPE (MMBPE) combines enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), electrochemiluminescence (ECL), ECL imaging and light emitting diode (LED) imaging, enabling highly sensitive triple read-out visible detection of cancer embryonic antigen (CEA). The ECL probe Ab2@Au@Co3O4/CoFe2O4 hollow nanocubes (HNCs) with excellent peroxidase (POD) activity is introduced into the BPE cathode through immune adsorption. The Au@Co3O4/CoFe2O4 HNCs can increase the rate of hydrogen peroxide oxidation of TMB, thus promoting the reaction, and can be used for ELISA detection of CEA at different concentrations. The modification of the BPE sensing interface and reporting interface involved the introduction of the luminescent reagent Ru(bpy)32+ to the BPE anode. The decomposition rate of H2O2 increased under the catalytic action of Au@Co3O4/CoFe2O4 HNCs nanozyme, leading to an accelerated electron transfer rate in the MMBPE system and an enhanced ECL signal from Ru(bpy)32+. The LED imaging technology further provides a convenient and visible approach for CEA imaging in which no additional chemicals are needed. The integration of nanoenzymes as the catalytic core in MMBPE system provides impetus, while the combination of nanozymes with BPE expands the application of nanoenzymes in the field of biological analysis. The integration of intelligent chips with multiple modes of detection shows portable, miniaturized, and integrated excellent properties which meets the requirements of modern detection devices and thus offers a flexible approach for determination of nucleic acids, proteins, and cells.

The association between trace metals in both cancerous and non-cancerous tissues with the risk of liver and gastric cancer progression in northwest China

Liver cancer and gastric cancer have extremely high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. It is well known that an increase or decrease in trace metals may be associated with the formation and development of a variety of diseases, including cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the contents of aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in cancerous liver and gastric tissues, compared to adjacent healthy tissues, and to investigate the relationship between trace metals and cancer progression. During surgery, multiple samples were taken from the cancerous and adjacent healthy tissues of patients with liver and gastric cancer, and trace metal levels within these samples were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). We found that concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn in tissues from patients with liver cancer were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (P < 0.05). Similarly, patients with gastric cancer also showed lower levels of Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Zn-but higher levels of Cu and Se-compared to the controls (P < 0.05). In addition, patients with liver and gastric cancers who had poorly differentiated tumours and positive lymph node metastases showed lower levels of trace metals (P < 0.05), although no significant changes in their concentrations were observed to correlate with sex, age, or body mass index (BMI). Logistic regression, principal component analysis (PCA), Bayesian kernel regression (BKMR), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and quantile-based g computing (qgcomp) models were used to analyse the relationships between trace metal concentrations in liver and gastric cancer tissues and the progression of these cancers. We found that single or mixed trace metal levels were negatively associated with poor differentiation and lymph node metastasis in both liver and gastric cancer, and the posterior inclusion probability (PIP) of each metal showed that Cd contributed the most to poor differentiation and lymph node metastasis in both liver and gastric cancer (all PIP = 1.000). These data help to clarify the relationship between changes in trace metal levels in cancerous liver and gastric tissues and the progression of these cancers. Further research is warranted, however, to fully elucidate the mechanisms and causations underlying these findings.

Elucidating the impacts of cobalt (II) ions on extracellular electron transfer and pollutant degradation by anodic biofilms in bioelectrochemical systems during industrial wastewater treatment

Electrogenic biofilms in bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are critical in wastewater treatment. Industrial effluents often contain cobalt (Co2+); however, its impact on biofilms is unknown. This study investigated how increasing Co2+ concentrations (0-30 mg/L) affect BES biofilm community dynamics, extracellular polymeric substances, microbial metabolism, electron transfer gene expression, and electrochemical performance. The research revealed that as Co2+ concentrations increased, power generation progressively declined, from 345.43 ± 4.07 mW/m2 at 0 mg/L to 160.51 ± 0.86 mW/m2 at 30 mg/L Co2+. However, 5 mg/L Co2+ had less effect. The Co2+ removal efficiency in the reactors fed with 5 and 10 mg/L concentrations exceeded 99% and 94%, respectively. However, at 20 and 30 mg/L, the removal efficiency decreased substantially, likely because of reduced biofilm viability. FTIR indicated the participation of biofilm functional groups in Co2+ uptake. XPS revealed Co2+ presence in biofilms as CoO and Co(OH)2, indicating precipitation also aided removal. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests revealed that 5 mg/L Co2+ had little impact on the electrocatalytic activity, while higher concentrations impaired it. Furthermore, at a concentration of 5 mg/L Co2+, there was an increase in the proportion of the genus Anaeromusa-Anaeroarcus, while the genus Geobacter declined at all tested Co2+ concentrations. Additionally, higher concentrations of Co2+ suppressed the expression of extracellular electron transfer genes but increased the expression of Co2+-resistance genes. Overall, this study establishes how Co2+ impacts electrogenic biofilm composition, function, and treatment efficacy, laying the groundwork for the optimized application of BES in remediating Co2+-contaminated wastewater.

Fenton-like membrane reactor assembled by electron polarization and defect engineering modifying Co3O4 spinel for flow-through removal of organic contaminants

The application of Fenton-like membrane reactors for water purification offers a promising solution to overcome technical challenges associated with catalyst recovery, reaction efficiency, and mass transfer typically encountered in heterogeneous batch reaction modes. This study presents a dual-modification strategy encompassing electron polarization and defect engineering to synthesize Al-doped and oxygen vacancies (OV)-enriched Co3O4 spinel catalysts (ACO-OV). This modification empowered ACO-OV with exceptional performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of organic contaminants. Moreover, the ACO-OV@polyethersulfone (PES) membrane/PMS system achieved organic contaminant removal through filtration (with a reaction kinetic constant of 0.085 ms-1), demonstrating outstanding resistance to environmental interference and high operational stability. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the exceptional catalytic performance of this Fenton-like membrane reactor stemmed from the enrichment of reactants, exposure of reactive sites, and enhanced mass transfer within the confined space, leading to a higher availability of reactive species. Theoretical calculations were conducted to validate the beneficial intrinsic effects of electron polarization, defect engineering, and the confined space within the membrane reactor on PMS activation and organic contaminant removal. Notably, the ACO-OV@PES membrane/PMS system not only mineralized the targeted organic contaminants but also effectively mitigated their potential environmental risks. Overall, this work underscores the significant potential of the dual-modification strategy in designing spinel catalysts and Fenton-like membrane reactors for efficient organic contaminant removal.

Constructing surface oxygen defects at CuO-Co3O4 interface to boost toluene oxidation over CuO/Co3O4 catalysts

As a typical heterogeneous catalytic process, the catalytic combustion of toluene over Co3O4-based catalysts is strongly depends on the surface properties of catalysts, especially the concentration of surface oxygen defects. Here, a novel way was proposed to construct chemically bonded CuO-Co3O4 interface by chemical deposition of CuO onto Co3O4 nanoflowers. The interfacial refinement effect between CuO and Co3O4 support disrupted the ordered atomic arrangement and created countless unsaturated coordination sites at CuO-Co3O4 interface, inducing a significant generation of surface oxygen defects. Surface-rich oxygen vacancies enhanced the capacity of 20%CuO/Co3O4-R to adsorb and activate oxygen species. Benefiting from this, 90 % toluene conversion was reached at 228 °C over 20%CuO/Co3O4-R, which was much lower than that over 20%CuO/Co3O4-S prepared by impregnation method and CuO/Co3O4-mix obtained by mechanically mixing way. In-situ DRIFTS analysis revealed that toluene could be directly decomposed into benzaldehyde at the highly defective CuO-Co3O4 interface, leading to toluene oxidation following the path of toluene → benzaldehyde → benzoate → maleic anhydride → water and carbon dioxide over 20%CuO/Co3O4-R, which was significantly different from decomposition mechanism over 20%CuO/Co3O4-S. Additionally, 20%CuO/Co3O4-R displayed terrific recyclability and outstanding stability, showing good application potential.

Cationic regulation of specificity and activity of defective MCo2O4 nanozyme (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) for colorimetric detection of caffeic acid

Spinel oxide has great promise in constructing highly active nanozymes due to its tunable crystal structure. However, it still faces the problems of poor specificity and insufficient enzyme activity, which limits its application in the field of analysis. Herein, a series of transition metal spinel oxides were synthesized by cation regulation strategy, and their enzymatic activity and catalytic mechanism were analyzed. Interestingly, FeCo2O4, Co3O4 and NiCo2O4 had oxidase-like activity and peroxidase-like activity, while CuCo2O4 had specific and high oxidase-like activity. Their oxidase-like activities follow the order of FeCo2O4 < Co3O4 < NiCo2O4 < CuCo2O4, which is consistent with their cation radius. The smaller the cation radius of tetrahedral site, the more beneficial it is to increase the oxidase-like activity. The high oxidase-like activity of CuCo2O4 may be attributed to the production of 1O2, •O2- and •OH. EPR results showed the presence of abundant oxygen vacancies in CuCo2O4. Upon the introduction of EDTA, TMB color reaction fades because of oxygen vacancies elimination by EDTA, indicating that oxygen vacancies played an important role in the reaction. Based on the inhibition effect of caffeic acid on the high oxidase-like activity of CuCo2O4, a simple and sensitive caffeic acid colorimetric sensing platform was developed. The linear range for the detection of caffeic acid is 0.02-15 μM, with a detection limit as low as 13 nM. The constructed sensor enables the detection of caffeic acid in caffeic acid tablets and actual water samples, providing a new strategy for the detection of caffeic acid and drug quality control.

In vitro neuronal and glial response to magnetically stimulated piezoelectric poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)/cobalt ferrite (CFO) microspheres

Polymer biomaterials are being considered for tissue regeneration due to the possibility of resembling different extracellular matrix characteristics. However, most current scaffolds cannot respond to physical-chemical modifications of the cell microenvironment. Stimuli-responsive materials, such as electroactive smart polymers, are increasingly gaining attention once they can produce electrical potentials without external power supplies. The presence of piezoelectricity in human tissues like cartilage and bone highlights the importance of electrical stimulation in physiological conditions. Although poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is one of the piezoelectric polymers with the highest piezoelectric response, it is not biodegradable. Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a promising copolymer of poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) for tissue engineering and regeneration applications. It offers biodegradability, piezoelectric properties, biocompatibility, and bioactivity, making it a superior option to PVDF for biomedical purposes requiring biodegradability. Magnetoelectric polymer composites can be made by combining magnetostrictive particles and piezoelectric polymers to further tune their properties for tissue regeneration. These composites convert magnetic stimuli into electrical stimuli, generating local electrical potentials for various applications. Cobalt ferrites (CFO) and piezoelectric polymers have been combined and processed into different morphologies, maintaining biocompatibility for tissue engineering. The present work studied how PHBV/CFO microspheres affected neural and glial response in spinal cord cultures. It is expected that the electrical signals generated by these microspheres due to their magnetoelectric nature could aid in tissue regeneration and repair. PHBV/CFO microspheres were not cytotoxic and were able to impact neurite outgrowth and promote neuronal differentiation. Furthermore, PHBV/CFO microspheres led to microglia activation and induced the release of several bioactive molecules. Importantly, magnetically stimulated microspheres ameliorated cell viability after an in vitro ROS-induced lesion of spinal cord cultures, which suggests a beneficial effect on tissue regeneration and repair.

Toxic metals and essential trace elements in placenta and their relation to placental function

INTRODUCTION

Placental function is essential for fetal development, but it may be susceptible to malnutrition and environmental stressors.

OBJECTIVE

To assess the impact of toxic and essential trace elements in placenta on placental function.

METHODS

Toxic metals (cadmium, lead, mercury, cobalt) and essential elements (copper, manganese, zinc, selenium) were measured in placenta of 406 pregnant women in northern Sweden using ICP-MS. Placental weight and birth weight were obtained from hospital records and fetoplacental weight ratio was used to estimate placental efficiency. Placental relative telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) were determined by quantitative PCR (n = 285). Single exposure-outcome associations were evaluated using linear or spline regression, and joint associations and interactions with Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), all adjusted for sex, maternal smoking, and age or BMI.

RESULTS

Median cadmium, mercury, lead, cobalt, copper, manganese, zinc, and selenium concentrations in placenta were 3.2, 1.8, 4.3, 2.3, 1058, 66, 10626, and 166 μg/kg, respectively. In the adjusted regression, selenium (>147 μg/kg) was inversely associated with placental weight (B: -158; 95 % CI: -246, -71, per doubling), as was lead at low selenium (B: -23.6; 95 % CI: -43.2, -4.0, per doubling). Manganese was positively associated with placental weight (B: 41; 95 % CI: 5.9, 77, per doubling) and inversely associated with placental efficiency (B: -0.01; 95 % CI: -0.019, -0.004, per doubling). Cobalt was inversely associated with mtDNAcn (B: -11; 95 % CI: -20, -0.018, per doubling), whereas all essential elements were positively associated with mtDNAcn, individually and joint.

CONCLUSION

Among the toxic metals, lead appeared to negatively impact placental weight and cobalt decreased placental mtDNAcn. Joint essential element concentrations increased placental mtDNAcn. Manganese also appeared to increase placental weight, but not birth weight. The inverse association of selenium with placental weight may reflect increased transport of selenium to the fetus in late gestation.

MITF regulates the subcellular location of HIF1α through SUMOylation to promote the invasion and metastasis of daughter cells derived from polyploid giant cancer cells

High concentrations of cobalt chloride (CoCl2) can induce the formation of polyploid giant cancer cells (PGCCs) in various tumors, which can produce daughter cells with strong proliferative, migratory and invasive abilities via asymmetric division. To study the role of hypoxia‑inducible factor (HIF) 1α in the formation of PGCCs, colon cancer cell lines Hct116 and LoVo were used as experimental subjects. Western blotting, nuclear and cytoplasmic protein extraction and immunocytochemical experiments were used to compare the changes in the expression and subcellular localization of HIF1α, microphthalmia‑associated transcription factor (MITF), protein inhibitor of activated STAT protein 4 (PIAS4) and von Hippel‑Lindau disease tumor suppressor (VHL) after treatment with CoCl2. The SUMOylation of HIFα was verified by co‑immunoprecipitation assay. After inhibiting HIF1α SUMOylation, the changes in proliferation, migration and invasion abilities of Hct116 and LoVo were compared by plate colony formation, wound healing and Transwell migration and invasion. In addition, lysine sites that led to SUMOylation of HIF1α were identified through site mutation experiments. The results showed that CoCl2 can induce the formation of PGCCs with the expression level of HIF1α higher in treated cells than in control cells. HIF1α was primarily located in the cytoplasm of control cell. Following CoCl2 treatment, the subcellular localization of HIF1α was primarily in the nuclei of PGCCs with daughter cells (PDCs). After treatment with SUMOylation inhibitors, the nuclear HIF1α expression in PDCs decreased. Furthermore, their proliferation, migration and invasion abilities also decreased. After inhibiting the expression of MITF, the expression of HIF1α decreased. MITF can regulate HIF1α SUMOylation. Expression and subcellular localization of VHL and HIF1α did not change following PIAS4 knockdown. SUMOylation of HIF1α occurs at the amino acid sites K391 and K477 in PDCs. After mutation of the two sites, nuclear expression of HIF1α in PDCs was reduced, along with a significant reduction in the proliferation, migration and invasion abilities. In conclusion, the post‑translation modification regulated the subcellular location of HIF1α and the nuclear expression of HIF1α promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion abilities of PDCs. MITF could regulate the transcription and protein levels of HIF1α and participate in the regulation of HIF1α SUMOylation.

Elevated cobalt levels in metal-on-polyethylene knee megaprostheses: a prospective 1-year cohort study of 56 patients with hip and knee megaprostheses

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Concerns have emerged regarding elevated levels of cobalt and chromium in patients with metal-on-metal megaprostheses. This prospective study aims to identify systemic cobalt and chromium levels in metal-on-polyethylene knee and hip megaprostheses and their associations with other factors.

METHODS

56 patients underwent knee or hip megaprosthesis surgery at 2 sarcoma centers. Serum cobalt and chromium levels were measured preoperatively and thrice within the first year using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

RESULTS

A statistically significant difference in serum cobalt levels (1.4 ppb; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.0-3.3) was observed 1 year after knee megaprosthesis surgery compared with preoperative levels. In contrast no difference in chromium levels was observed after 1 year compared with preoperative levels (0.05 ppb; CI 0.0-0.8). An association between younger age, higher eGFR, and increased cobalt levels was observed. No significant correlations were found between ion levels and resection length or the number of modular connections.

CONCLUSION

We found elevated serum ion levels in metal-on-polyethylene knee megaprostheses in contrast to metal-on-polyethylene hip megaprostheses. Furthermore, a positive correlation between cobalt and chromium levels, and between cobalt and eGFR was identified, along with a negative correlation between cobalt and age. This study highlights the importance of monitoring systemic cobalt and chromium levels in patients with megaprostheses.

MOF-based Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme for colorimetric detection of thiophanate-methyl based on analyte-enhanced sensing mechanism

Silver nanoparticles supported on metal-organic framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co3O4 nanostructures (Ag NPs/Co3O4) were synthesized via a facile in situ reduction strategy. The resulting materials exhibited pH-switchable peroxidase/catalase-like catalytic activity. Ag NP doping greatly enhanced the catalytic activity of Ag NPs/Co3O4 towards 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation and H2O2 decomposition which were 59 times (A652 of oxTMB) and 3 times (A240 of H2O2) higher than that of ZIF-67, respectively. Excitingly, thiophanate-methyl (TM) further enhanced the peroxidase-like activity of Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme due to the formation of Ag(I) species in TM-Ag NPs/Co3O4 and generation of more radicals resulting from strong interaction between Ag NPs and TM. The TM-Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme exhibited lower Km and higher Vmax values towards H2O2 when compared with Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme. A simple, bioelement-free colorimetric TM detection method based on Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme via analyte-enhanced sensing strategy was successfully established with high sensitivity and selectivity. Our study demonstrated that hybrid noble metal NPs/MOF-based nanozyme can be a class of promising artificial nanozyme in environmental and food safety applications.

In situ anchored ternary hierarchical hybrid nickel@cobaltous sulfide on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-reduced graphene oxide for highly efficient non-enzymatic glucose sensing

A ternary hierarchical hybrid Ni@CoxSy/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-reduced graphene oxide (Ni@CoxSy/PEDOT-rGO) is rationally designed and in situ facilely synthesized as electrocatalyst to construct a binder-free sensing platform for non-enzymatic glucose monitoring through traditional electrodeposition procedure. The as-prepared Ni@CoxSy/PEDOT-rGO presents unique hierarchical structure and multiple valence states as well as strong and robust adhesion between Ni@CoxSy/PEDOT-rGO and GCE. Profiting from the aforementioned merits, the sensing platform constructed under optimal conditions achieved a wide detection range (0.2 μM ~ 2.0 mM) with high sensitivity (1546.32 μA cm-2 mM-1), a rapid response time (5 s), an ultralow detection limit (0.094 μM), superior anti-interference performance, excellent reproducibility and considerable stability. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates an acceptable accuracy and appreciable recoveries ranging from 90.0 to 102.0% with less than 3.98% RSD in human blood serum samples, indicating the prospect of the sensor for the real samples analysis. It will provide a strategy to rationally design and fabricate ternary hierarchical hybrid as nanozyme for glucose assay.

Mechanical activation induced treatment for the synergistic recovery of valuable elements from spent NdFeB magnets

The efficient and sustainable recovery of rare earth resources from spent NdFeB magnets has received considerable and increasing attention. However, the currently prevalent NdFeB magnets recovery techniques focus only on the recovery for rare earth elements (REEs), some of which also recover cobalt (Co) or boron (B). Herein, a simple mechanochemical strategy was proposed to recover REE, Co, and B from spent NdFeB magnets by mixing the NdFeB magnets powder and FeCl3 6H2O through the grinding-roasting-water leaching technological route. The results indicated high leaching efficiencies of 98.94 % for REEs, 99.99 % for Co, and 93.36 % for B from the NdFeB magnets. Additionally, iron remains in the leaching residue as iron oxide (96.73 wt %), achieving the complete separation of REEs, Co, B, and Fe. This mechanochemical based technology offers a green and efficient recovery process, facilitating more effective synergistic recovery of valuable elements from spent NdFeB magnets.

Paper-based colorimetric sensor using bimetallic Nickel-Cobalt selenides nanozyme with artificial neural network-assisted for detection of H2O2 on smartphone

Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) integrated with smartphones have shown great potential in various fields, but they also face challenges such as single signal reading, complex data processing and significant environmental impacting. In this study, a colorimetric PAD platform has been proposed using bimetallic nickel-cobalt selenides as highly active peroxidase mimic, smartphone with 3D-printing dark-cavity as a portable detector and an artificial neural network (ANN) model as multi-signal processing tool. Notably, the optimized nickel-cobalt selenides (Ni0.75Co0.25Se with Ni to Co ratio of 3/1) exhibit excellent peoxidase-mimetic activities and are capable of catalyzing the oxidation of four chromogenic reagents in the presence of H2O2. Using a smartphone with image capture function as a friendly signal readout tool, the Ni0.75Co0.25Se based four channel colorimetric sensing paper is used for multi-signal quantitative analysis of H2O2 by determining the Grey, red (R), green (G) and blue (B) channel values of the captured pictures. An intelligent on-site detection method for H2O2 has been constructed by combining an ANN model and a self-programmed easy-to-use smartphone APP with a dynamic range of 5 μM to 2 M. Noteworthy, machine learning-assisted smartphone sensing devices based on nanozyme and 3D printing technology provide new insights and universal strategies for visual ultrasensitive detection in a variety of fields, including environments monitoring, biomedical diagnosis and safety screening.

Evaluation of soil pollution by heavy metal using index calculations and multivariate statistical analysis

This study aims to assess the extent of heavy metals (HMs) pollution in soil and identify its potential sources using single and integrated pollution index calculations, and multivariate statistical analysis. The HM concentrations of soil samples were analyzed using ICP-MS. The concentrations (mg/kg) of arsenic (As) ranged from 2.8 to 208.1, cadmium (Cd) from 0.1 to 0.3, cobalt (Co) from 1.9 to 20.5, copper (Cu) from 3.7 to 17.7, nickel (Ni) from 14.7 to 110.6, and lead (Pb) from 6.7 to 37.3. High levels of As contents and physicochemical parameters were found in the northeastern parts of the study area, while levels of other HMs were high in the remaining parts. The HM contents of some soil samples exceeded the average values of basalt and limestone in the study area, as well as the upper, bulk, and lower continental crusts, shale, and soil (worldwide). Multiple index methods were used to assess the pollution risk, and it was determined that some soil samples were moderately to considerably contaminated with varying levels of As, Cd, Co, Ni, and Pb. Multivariate statistical analyses provided that the source of HMs contamination in the soil was a result of geogenic and/or anthropogenic activities. Geogenic sources were associated with weathering rock units, while anthropogenic sources were linked to industrial activities, traffic emissions, and agricultural applications. The findings are useful for detecting contamination by HMs in soil, and they could contribute to future monitoring programs to prevent soil contamination and protect the health of living organisms.

Hypoxia enhances autophagy level of human sperms

The relationship between oxygen sensing and autophagy in human sperms was explored in this study. Health semen and asthenozoospermia (astheno) semen were incubated with hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) interferents, i.e., lificiguat (YC-1) or cobalt chloride (CoCl2), respectively. Label-free quantitative proteomic technology was used to identify the differentially expressed proteins in human semen under the hypoxia condition. Selected proteins were detected with ELISA. It was found that the autophagy levels of sperm in the YC-1 + health group or CoCl2 + astheno group increased while the vitality decreased. A total of 17, 34 and 35 differentially expressed proteins were observed in the Astheno group, the YC-1 + health group and the CoCl2 + astheno group, respectively. These proteins were primarily associated with protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum, Th17 cell differentiation, progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, HIF-1 signaling pathway, biosynthesis of amino acids, and carbon metabolism. The expression levels of protein HIF-1α, LC3B, histone H4, cathepsin L and ENO1 changed significantly in the groups. The study suggests that hypoxia can increase sperm autophagy level and reduce their vitality through HIF-1 signaling pathway and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis signaling pathway. Furthermore, proteins histone H4, cathepsin L, glutathione synthetase and ENO1 are proposed as potential biomarkers of autophagy and vitality in asthenozoospermia sperm.

Assessment of chitosan-coated zinc cobalt ferrite nanoparticle as a multifunctional theranostic platform facilitating pH-sensitive drug delivery and OCT image contrast enhancement

Colorectal cancer (CC) is one of the most predominant malignancies in the world, with the current treatment regimen consisting of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Chemotherapeutic drugs, such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), have gained popularity as first-line antineoplastic agents against CC but have several drawbacks, including variable absorption through the gastrointestinal tract, inconsistent liver metabolism, short half-life, toxicological reactions in several organ systems, and others. Therefore, herein, we develop chitosan-coated zinc-substituted cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CZCFNPs) for the pH-sensitive (triggered by chitosan degradation within acidic organelles of cells) and sustained delivery of 5-FU in CC cells in vitro. Additionally, the developed nanoplatform served as an excellent exogenous optical coherence tomography (OCT) contrast agent, enabling a significant improvement in the OCT image contrast in a CC tissue phantom model with a biomimetic microvasculature. Further, this study opens up new possibilities for using OCT for the non-invasive monitoring and/or optimization of magnetic targeting capabilities, as well as real-time tracking of magnetic nanoparticle-based therapeutic platforms for biomedical applications. Overall, the current study demonstrates the development of a CZCFNP-based theranostic platform capable of serving as a reliable drug delivery system as well as a superior OCT exogenous contrast agent for tissue imaging.

Nickel-cobalt metal-organic frameworks based flexible hydrogel as a wearable contact lens for electrochemical sensing of urea in tear samples

A flexible, wearable, non-invasive contact lens sensor utilizing nickel-cobalt metal-organic framework (Ni-Co-MOF) based hydrogel is introduced for urea monitoring in tear samples. The synthesized Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel exhibits a porous structure with interconnected voids, as visualized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Detailed structural and vibrational properties of the material were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The developed Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel sensor showcases a detection limit of 0.445 mM for urea within a linear range of 0.5-70 mM. Notably, it demonstrates exceptional selectivity, effectively distinguishing against interfering species like UA, AA, glucose, dopamine, Cl-, K+, Na+, Ca2+, and IgG. The enhanced electrocatalytic performance of the Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel electrode is attributed to the presence of Ni and Co, fostering Ni2+ oxidation on the surface and forming a Co2+ complex that acts as a catalyst for urea oxidation. The fabricated sensor exhibits successful detection and retrieval of urea in simulated tear samples, showcasing promising potential for bioanalytical applications. The binder-free, non-toxic nature of the Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel sensor presents exciting avenues for future utilization in non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing, including applications in wearable devices, point-of-care diagnostics, and personalized healthcare monitoring.

A ratiometric fluorescence platform based on WS2 QDs/CoOOH nanosheet system for α-glucosidase activity detection

In this study, we have constructed a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for sensitive sensing of α-glucosidase activity based on WS2 QDs/ CoOOH nanosheet system. In this system, as an oxidase-imimicking nanomaterial, CoOOH nanosheet could convert o-phenylenediamine into 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP), which had a high fluorescence emission at 575 nm. The DAP subsequently could quench the fluorescence of WS2 QDs via the inner filter effect (IFE). L-Ascorbic acid-2-O-α-D-glucopyranose could be hydrolyzed by α-glucosidase to yield ascorbic acid. CoOOH nanosheet can be converted to Co2+ ions by ascorbic acid, leading to the fluorescence decrease of DAP and the fluorescence recovery of WS2 QDs. Therefore, a novel ratio fluorescence sensing strategy was established for α-glucosidase detection based on WS2 QDs/CoOOH nanosheet system. This WS2 QDs/CoOOH nanosheet system has a low detection limit of 0.009 U/mL for α-Glu assay. The proposed strategy succeeded in detecting α-Glu in human serum samples.

Loading of Single Atoms of Iron, Cobalt, or Nickel to Enhance the Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction of Two-Dimensional Titanium Carbide

The rational design of advanced electrocatalysts at the molecular or atomic level is important for improving the performance of hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) and replacing precious metal catalysts. In this study, we describe the fabrication of electrocatalysts based on Fe, Co, or Ni single atoms supported on titanium carbide (TiC) using the molten salt method, i.e., TiC-FeSA, TiC-CoSA, or TiC-NiSA, to enhance HER performance. The introduction of uniformly distributed transition-metal single atoms successfully reduces the overpotential of HERs. Overpotentials of TiC-FeSA at 10 mA cm-2 are 123.4 mV with 61.1 mV dec-1 Tafel slope under acidic conditions and 184.2 mV with 85.1 mV dec-1 Tafel slope under alkaline conditions, which are superior to TiC-NiSA and TiC-CoSA. TiC samples loaded with transition-metal single atoms exhibit high catalytic activity and long stability under acidic and basic conditions. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the introduction of transition-metal single atoms effectively reduces the HER barrier of TiC-based electrocatalysts.

Schottky Barrier-Based Built-In Electric Field for Enhanced Tumor Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy's antitumor efficacy is hindered by the inefficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to the photogenerated electron-hole pairs recombination of photosensitizers (PS). Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient PSs with enhanced carrier dynamics. Herein, we designed Schottky junctions composed of cobalt tetroxide and palladium nanocubes (Co3O4@Pd) with a built-in electric field as effective PS. The built-in electric field enhanced photogenerated charge separation and migration, resulting in the generation of abundant electron-hole pairs and allowing effective production of ROS. Thanks to the built-in electric field, the photocurrent intensity and carrier lifetime of Co3O4@Pd were approximately 2 and 3 times those of Co3O4, respectively. Besides, the signal intensity of hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen increased to 253.4% and 135.9%, respectively. Moreover, the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Pd also enhanced the photothermal conversion efficiency of Co3O4@Pd to 40.50%. In vitro cellular level and in vivo xenograft model evaluations demonstrated that Co3O4@Pd could generate large amounts of ROS, trigger apoptosis, and inhibit tumor growth under near-infrared laser irradiation. Generally, this study reveals the contribution of the built-in electric field to improving photodynamic performance and provides new ideas for designing efficient inorganic PSs.

Combined exposure to multiple metals on abdominal aortic calcification: results from the NHANES study

Exposure to metals increases the risk of many diseases and has become a public health concern. However, few studies have focused on the effect of metal on abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), especially the combined effects of metal mixtures. In this study, we aim to investigate the combined effect of metals on AAC risk and determine the key components in the multiple metals. We tried to investigate the relationship between multiple metal exposure and AAC risk. Fourteen urinary metals were analyzed with five statistical models as follows: generalized linear regression, weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), quantile g-computation (Qgcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models. A total of 838 participants were involved, of whom 241 (28.8%) had AAC. After adjusting for covariates, in multiple metal exposure logistic regression, cadmium (Cd) (OR = 1.364, 95% CI = 1.035-1.797) was positively associated with AAC risk, while cobalt (Co) (OR = 0.631, 95% CI = 0.438-0.908) was negatively associated with AAC risk. A significant positive effect between multiple metal exposure and AAC risk was observed in WQS (OR = 2.090; 95% CI = 1.280-3.420, P < 0.01), Qgcomp (OR = 1.522, 95% CI = 1.012-2.290, P < 0.05), and BKMR models. It was found that the positive association may be driven primarily by Cd, lead (Pb), uranium (U), and tungsten (W). Subgroups analysis showed the association was more significant in participants with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, abdominal obesity, drinking, and smoking. Our study shows that exposure to multiple metals increases the risk of AAC in adults aged ≥ 40 years in the USA and that Cd, Pb, U, and W are the main contributors. The association is stronger in participants who are obese, smoker, or drinker.

Effect of lamination layer thickness and abutment preparation on the fit of Co-Cr multi-unit prostheses fabricated by additive manufacturing: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Selective laser melting has been increasingly used in the fabrication of metal-ceramic prostheses. The lamination layer thickness may influence the fit of the restoration. However, data regarding its impact remain scarce.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the marginal and internal fit of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) 3-unit frameworks fabricated by additive manufacturing with different melting layer thicknesses on different abutments.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The first right maxillary premolar and molar from a typodont were prepared with a circumferential 1.2-mm chamfer, 2-mm occlusal reduction, and total taper of 8 degrees to receive 3-unit fixed partial dentures. After framework design, the data were sent to a laser machine, and 30 specimens were fabricated from Co-Cr metal powder (Mediloy S-Co) by selective laser melting. Specimens were assigned to 3 groups (n=10) with different lamination layer thicknesses of 25 (L25), 50 (L50), and 100 (L100) μm. Marginal fit and internal fit were evaluated. Results were compared among layer thickness groups and abutments. Data were compared by using the Levene test, t test, and ANOVA (α=.05).

RESULTS

A statistical difference was found between different layer thickness groups (P=.016), but not between abutments (P=.429). On the abutment level, significant difference was found in the gap values for the molars (P=.049) between layer thickness groups, but not for the premolars (P=.126). Group L25 reported the smallest mean discrepancy values, and group L100 reported the highest, with statistical difference found between group L100 and groups L25 (P<.001) and L50 (P<.025), but not between groups L25 and L50 (P=.094).

CONCLUSIONS

The lamination layer thickness affected the adaptation of the metal frameworks. Framework fit did not significantly differ between abutments.

Investigation of cell-accelerated corrosion (CAC) on the CoCrMo alloy with segregation banding: Hip implant applications

Metal alloy microstructure plays a crucial role in corrosion associated with total hip replacement (THR). THR is a prominent strategy that uses metal implants such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys due to their advantageous biological and mechanical properties. Despite all benefits, these implants undergo corrosion and wear processes in-vivo in a synergistic manner called tribocorrosion. Also, the implant retrieval findings reported that fretting corrosion occurred in-vivo, evidenced by the damage patterns that appeared on the THR junction interfaces. There is no scientific data on the studies reporting the fretting corrosion patterns of CoCrMo microstructures in the presence of specific biological treatments to date. In the current study, Flat-on-flat fretting corrosion set-up was customized and used to study the tribocorrosion patterns of fretting corrosion to understand the role of alloy microstructure. Alloy microstructural differences were created with the implant stock metal's longitudinal and transverse cutting orientations. As a result, the transverse created the non-banded, homogenous microstructure, whereas the longitudinal cut resulted in the banded, non-homogenous microstructure on the surface of the alloy (in this manuscript, the terms homogenous and banded were used). The induced currents were monitored using a three-electrode system. Three different types of electrolytes were utilized to study the fretting corrosion patterns with both homogeneous and banded microstructures: 1. Control media 2. Spent media (the macrophage cell cultured media) 3. Challenged media (media collected after the macrophage was treated with CoCrMo particles). From the electrochemical results, in the potentiostat conditions, the banded group exhibited a higher induced current in both challenged and spent electrolyte environments than in control due to the synergistic activity of CoCrMo particles and macrophage demonstrating more corrosion loss. Additionally, both Bode and Nyquist plots reported a clear difference between the banded and homogeneous microstructure, especially with challenged electrolytes becoming more corrosion-resistant post-fretting than pre-fretting results. The banded microstructure showed a unique shape of the fretting loop, which may be due to tribochemical reactions. Therefore, from the electrochemical, mechanical, and surface analysis data results, the transverse/homogenous/non-banded alloy microstructure groups show a higher resistance to fretting-corrosion damage.

Selective production of phenolic monomer via catalytic depolymerization of lignin over cobalt-nickel-zirconium dioxide catalyst

The utilization of lignin, an abundant and renewable bio-aromatic source, is of significant importance. In this study, lignin oxidation was examined at different temperatures with zirconium oxide (ZrO2)-supported nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) and bimetallic Ni-Co metal catalysts under different solvents and oxygen pressure. Non-catalytic oxidation reaction produced maximum bio-oil (35.3 wt%), while catalytic oxidation significantly increased the bio-oil yield. The bimetallic catalyst Ni-Co/ZrO2 produced the highest bio-oil yield (67.4 wt%) compared to the monometallic catalyst Ni/ZrO2 (59.3 wt%) and Co/ZrO2 (54.0 wt%). The selectively higher percentage of vanillin, 2-methoxy phenol, acetovanillone, acetosyringone and vanillic acid compounds are found in the catalytic bio-oil. Moreover, it has been observed that the bimetallic Co-Ni/ZrO2 produced a higher amount of vanillin (43.7% and 13.30 wt%) compound. These results demonstrate that the bimetallic Ni-Co/ZrO2 catalyst promotes the selective cleavage of the ether β-O-4 bond in lignin, leading to a higher yield of phenolic monomer compounds.

A Polished Cobalt-Chrome Baseplate is not Associated With a Lower Revision Rate Than Matt Titanium in a Single Total Knee Arthroplasty Implant System With Identical Baseplate Design

BACKGROUND

Polished baseplates were introduced into total knee arthroplasty (TKA) systems to reduce the incidence of backside wear. In 2004, a fixed-bearing knee arthroplasty system underwent a change in baseplate material from matt titanium to polished cobalt-chrome (CoCr) with the intention to reduce backside wear. Other design aspects were left unchanged. The aim of this study was to compare these implants with each baseplate using data from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry.

METHODS

Primary TKA procedures performed between January 2010 and December 2021 for osteoarthritis, using a single design with cross-linked polyethylene inserts and matt titanium or polished CoCr baseplates, were analyzed. The primary outcome was all-cause revision, summarized using Kaplan-Meier estimates, with age- and sex-adjusted hazard ratios estimated from Cox proportional hazards models. In total, there were 2,091 procedures with matt titanium and 2,519 procedures with polished CoCr baseplates.

RESULTS

The 9-year cumulative percent revision was 2.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.8 to 3.5%) and 4.2% (95% CI 3.1 to 5.6%) for the matt titanium and CoCr groups, respectively. Compared to matt titanium, the revision rate of CoCr baseplates was not significantly higher (hazard ratio 1.44; 95% CI 0.96 to 2.15; P = .076).

CONCLUSIONS

Polished CoCr baseplates in a single TKA system were not associated with reduced all-cause revision rates compared to matt titanium up to 11 years post-TKA. Our results suggest that the predicted reduction in wear particle debris production from polished CoCr baseplates may not correlate with reduced revision rates in vivo, but further evaluation is required.

Size-controlled synthesis of La and chitosan doped cobalt selenide nanostructures for catalytic and antibacterial activity with molecular docking analysis

Co-precipitation method was adopted to synthesize ternary heterostructure catalysts La/CS-CoSe NSs (lanthanum/chitosan‑cobalt selenide nanostructures) without the use of a surfactant. During synthesis, a fixed amount (3 wt%) of CS was doped with 2 and 4 wt% La to control the growth, recombination rate and stability of CoSe NSs. The doped samples served to enhance the surface area, porosity and active sites for catalytic degradation of rhodamine B dye and antibacterial potential against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Additionally, the synthesized catalysts were examined for morphological, structural and optical characteristics to assess the influence of dopants to CoSe. XRD spectra verified the hexagonal and cubic structure of CoSe, whereas the porosity of the undoped sample (CoSe) increased from 45 to 60 % upon incorporation of dopants (La and Cs). Among the samples analyzed during this study, 4 % La/CS-CoSe exhibited significant bactericidal behavior as well as the highest catalytic reduction of rhodamine B dye in a neutral environment. Molecular docking analysis was employed to elucidate the underlying mechanism behind the bactericidal activity exhibited by CS-CoSe and La/CS-CoSe NSs against DHFRS. aureus and DNA gyraseS. aureus.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by nanocomposites towards the removal of sulfamethoxazole: Performance and mechanism

Heterogeneous activation of peroxomonosulfate (PMS) has been extensively studied for the degradation of antibiotics. The cobalt ferrite spinel exhibits good activity in the PMS activation, but suffers from the disadvantage of low PMS utilization efficiency. Herein, the nanocomposites including FeS, CoS2, CoFe2O4 and Fe2O3 were synthesized by hydrothermal method and used for the first time to activate PMS for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The nanocomposites showed superior catalytic activity in which the SMX could be completely removed at 40 min, 0.1 g L-1 nanocomposites and 0.4 mM PMS with the first order kinetic constant of 0.2739 min-1. The PMS utilization efficiency was increased by 29.4% compared to CoFe2O4. Both radicals and non-radicals contributed to the SMX degradation in which high-valent metal oxo dominated. The mechanism analysis indicated that sulfur modification, on one hand, enhanced the adsorption of nanocomposites for PMS, and promoted the redox cycles of Fe2+/Fe3+ and Co2+/Co3+ on the other hand. This study provides new way to enhance the catalytic activity and PMS utilization efficiency of spinel cobalt ferrite.

Regeneration from three cellular sources and ectopic mini-retina formation upon neurotoxic retinal degeneration in Xenopus

Regenerative abilities are not evenly distributed across the animal kingdom. The underlying modalities are also highly variable. Retinal repair can involve the mobilization of different cellular sources, including ciliary marginal zone (CMZ) stem cells, the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE), or Müller glia. To investigate whether the magnitude of retinal damage influences the regeneration modality of the Xenopus retina, we developed a model based on cobalt chloride (CoCl2 ) intraocular injection, allowing for a dose-dependent control of cell death extent. Analyses in Xenopus laevis revealed that limited CoCl2 -mediated neurotoxicity only triggers cone loss and results in a few Müller cells reentering the cell cycle. Severe CoCl2 -induced retinal degeneration not only potentializes Müller cell proliferation but also enhances CMZ activity and unexpectedly triggers RPE reprogramming. Surprisingly, reprogrammed RPE self-organizes into an ectopic mini-retina-like structure laid on top of the original retina. It is thus likely that the injury paradigm determines the awakening of different stem-like cell populations. We further show that these cellular sources exhibit distinct neurogenic capacities without any bias towards lost cells. This is particularly striking for Müller glia, which regenerates several types of neurons, but not cones, the most affected cell type. Finally, we found that X. tropicalis also has the ability to recruit Müller cells and reprogram its RPE following CoCl2 -induced damage, whereas only CMZ involvement was reported in previously examined degenerative models. Altogether, these findings highlight the critical role of the injury paradigm and reveal that three cellular sources can be reactivated in the very same degenerative model.

Constructing core-shell structured Co3O4-MnWO4 composite photoelectrode with superior PEC water purification performance

Semiconductor photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) technology is one of the most effective methods for removing organic pollutants from wastewater in advanced oxidation processes(AOPs). The selection of suitable semiconductor materials as photoanodes is a crucial factor for achieving superior PEC performance. Here, a core-shell structured Co3O4-MnWO4 architecture is created by enveloping MnWO4 nanoparticles onto the surface of Co3O4 nanowires through a two-step hydrothermal process. The optimized Co3O4-MnWO4-5 photoelectrode showed superior PEC degradation efficiency for KN-R (∼91.2% in 2 h) and durable stability (the accelerated lifetime reached ∼9100 s at a current density of 50 mA cm-2). Three actual wastewaters were also collected to verify the practical applicability of the photoelectrode.The energy consumption was measured at 4.48 kWhm-3, with a COD removal efficiency of 83% and a decolorization rate of 98%. These results demonstrate the excellent performance and promising application of the photoelectrode. The enhancement of PEC performance for the core-shell structured Co3O4-MnWO4 architecture can be attributed to the suitable energy band structure of the Co3O4-MnWO4 composite, higher OEP, larger electrochemical active surface area, accelerated transport of interface carriers, and lower charge transfer resistance. The energy band structure of the Co3O4-MnWO4 composite showed a strong redox ability to induce electrons/holes (e-/h+), which enhances the generation of intermediate active species (hydroxyl radical ·OH and superoxide radicals ·O2-). Therefore, the rationally designed core-shell structured Co3O4-MnWO4 architecture exhibited excellent practical applicability in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Preparation of Cobalt-Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Activated Peroxymonosulfate Degradation of Carbamazepine

Cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3@NCNT-800) were synthesized via a facile and economical approach to investigate the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments. This material demonstrated high catalytic efficiency in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The experimental data revealed that at a neutral pH of 7 and an initial CBZ concentration of 20 mg/L, the application of Co3@NCNT-800 at 0.2 g/L facilitated a degradation rate of 64.7% within 60 min. Mechanistic investigations indicated that the presence of pyridinic nitrogen and cobalt species enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species. Radical scavenging assays and electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirmed that radical and nonradical pathways contributed to CBZ degradation, with the nonradical mechanism being predominant. This research presents the development of a novel PMS catalyst, synthesized through an efficient and stable method, which provides a cost-effective solution for the remediation of organic contaminants in water.

Pioneering electrochemical detection unveils erdafitinib: a breakthrough in anticancer agent determination

The successful fabrication is reported of highly crystalline Co nanoparticles interconnected with zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-12) -based amorphous porous carbon using the molten-salt-assisted approach utilizing NaCl. Single crystal diffractometers (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirm the codoped amorphous carbon structure. Crystallite size was calculated by Scherrer (34 nm) and Williamson-Hall models (42 nm). The magnetic properties of NPCS (N-doped porous carbon sheet) were studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The NPCS has a magnetic saturation (Ms) value of 1.85 emu/g. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that Co/Co3O4 nanoparticles are homogeneously distributed in the carbon matrix. While a low melting point eutectic salt acts as an ionic liquid solvent, ZIF-12, at high temperature, leading cobalt nanoparticles with a trace amount of Co3O4 interconnected by conductive amorphous carbon. In addition, the surface area (89.04 m2/g) and pore architectures of amorphous carbon embedded with Co nanoparticles are created using the molten salt approach. Thanks to this inexpensive and effective method, the optimal composite porous carbon structures were obtained with the strategy using NaCl salt and showed distinct electrochemical performance on electrochemical methodology revealing the analytical profile of Erdatifinib (ERD) as a sensor modifier. The linear response spanned from 0.01 to 7.38 μM, featuring a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.36 nM and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 11.2 nM. The developed sensor was examined in terms of selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility. The fabricated electrode was utilized for the quantification of Erdafitinib in urine samples and pharmaceutical dosage forms. This research provides a fresh outlook on the advancements in electrochemical sensor technology concerning the development and detection of anticancer drugs within the realms of medicine and pharmacology.

Sensitivity Enhancement of CO2 Sensors at Room Temperature Based on the CZO Nanorod Architecture

Cobalt-doped ZnO (CZO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates at room temperature by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering of a single target prepared with ZnO and Co3O4 powders. Changes in the crystallinity, morphology, optical properties, and chemical composition of the CZO thin films were investigated at various sputtering powers of 45, 60, and 75 W. All samples presented a hexagonal wurtzite-type structure with a preferential c-axis at the (002) plane, along with a distinct change in the strain values through X-ray diffraction patterns. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy revealed uniform and dense deposition of nanorod CZO samples with a high surface roughness (RMS). The Hall mobility and carrier concentration increased with the introduction of Co+ ions into the ZnO matrix, as seen from the Hall effect study. The gradual increase of the power applied on the target source significantly affected the morphology of the CZO thin film, which is reflected in the CO2-sensing performance. The best gas response to CO2 was recorded for CZO-60 W with a response of 1.45 for 500 ppm CO2, and the response/recovery times were 72 and 35 s, respectively. The distinguishing feature of the CZO sensor is its ability to effectively and rapidly detect the CO2 target gas at room temperature (∼27 °C, RT).

Efficient Photothermal Catalytic Oxidation Enabled by Three-Dimensional Nanochannel Substrates

Photothermal catalysis exhibits promising prospects to overcome the shortcomings of high-energy consumption of traditional thermal catalysis and the low efficiency of photocatalysis. However, there is still a challenge to develop catalysts with outstanding light absorption capability and photothermal conversion efficiency for the degradation of atmospheric pollutants. Herein, we introduced the Co3O4 layer and Pt nanoclusters into the three-dimensional (3D) porous membrane through the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, leading to a Pt/Co3O4/AAO monolithic catalyst. The 3D ordered nanochannel structure can significantly enhance the solar absorption capacity through the light-trapping effect. Therefore, the embedded Pt/Co3O4 catalyst can be rapidly heated and the O2 adsorbed on the Pt clusters can be activated to generate sufficient O2- species, exhibiting outstanding activity for the diverse VOCs (toluene, acetone, and formaldehyde) degradation. Optical characterization and simulation calculation confirmed that Pt/Co3O4/AAO exhibited state-of-the-art light absorption and a notable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectrometry (in situ DRIFTS) studies demonstrated that light irradiation can accelerate the conversion of intermediates during toluene and acetone oxidation, thereby inhibiting byproduct accumulation. Our finding extends the application of AAO's optical properties in photothermal catalytic degradation of air pollutants.

Removal of sulfonamide antibiotics by non-free radical dominated peroxymonosulfate oxidation catalyzed by cobalt-doped sulfur-containing biochar from sludge

The reuse of activated sludge as a solid waste is severely underutilized due to the limitations of traditional treatment and disposal methods. Given that, the sulfur-containing activated sludge catalyst doped with cobalt (SK-Co(1.0)) was successfully prepared by one-step pyrolysis and calcinated at 850 ℃. The generation of CoSx was successfully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating that the sulfur inside the sludge was the anchoring site for the externally doped cobalt. Cobalt (Ⅱ) (Co2+), as the main adsorption site for peroxymonosulfate(PMS), formed a complex (SK-Co(1.0)-PMS* ) and created the conditions for the generation of surface radicals. The SK-Co(1.0)/PMS system showed high degradation efficiency and apparent rate constants for Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (91.56% and 0.187 min-1) and Sulfadiazine (SDZ) (90.73% and 0.047 min-1) within 10 min and 30 min, respectively. Three sites of generation of 1O2, which played a dominant role in the degradation of SMX and SDZ in the SK-Co(1.0)/PMS system, were summarized as：sulfur vacancies (SVs), the Co3+/Co2+ cycles promoted by sulfur(S) species, oxygen-containing functional groups (C-O). The degradation mechanisms and pathways had been thoroughly investigated using DFT calculations. In view of this, a new idea for the resource utilization of activated sludge solid waste was provided and a new strategy for wastewater remediation was proposed.

A self-activating electron transfer antibacterial strategy: Co3O4/TiO2 P-N heterojunctions combined with photothermal therapy

Implant-associated infections are significant impediments to successful surgical outcomes, often resulting from persistent bacterial contamination. It has been hypothesized that bacteria can transfer electrons to semiconductors with comparable potential to the biological redox potential (BRP). Building on this concept, we developed an antibiotic-free bactericidal system, Co3O4/TiO2-Ti, capable of achieving real-time and sustainable bactericidal effects. Our study demonstrated that Co3O4/TiO2-Ti, possessing an appropriately set valence band, initiated charge transfer, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and membrane damage in adherent Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Notably, in vivo experiments illustrated the remarkable antibacterial activity of Co3O4/TiO2-Ti, while promoting soft-tissue reconstruction and demonstrating excellent cytocompatibility. Transcriptomic analysis further revealed a down-regulation of aerobic respiration-associated genes and an up-regulation of ROS-associated genes in S. aureus in the presence of Co3O4/TiO2-Ti compared to Ti. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) identified alterations in respiratory metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, and the synthesis of amino acid in S. aureus cultured on Co3O4/TiO2-Ti. Furthermore, when combined with near-infrared (NIR) irradiation and photothermal therapy (PTT), Co3O4/TiO2-Ti eliminated 95.71% of floating and adherent S. aureus in vitro. The findings suggest that this antibiotic-free strategy holds substantial promise in enhancing implant sterilization capabilities, thereby contributing to the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections through bandgap engineering of implants and NIR irradiation.

Synthesis, characterization, and cancer cell-selective cytotoxicity of mixed-ligand cobalt(III) complexes of 8-hydroxyquinolines and phenanthroline bases

Transition metal complexes exhibiting selective toxicity towards a broad range of cancer types are highly desirable as potential anticancer agents. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and cytotoxicity studies of six new mixed-ligand cobalt(III) complexes of general formula [Co(B)2(L)](ClO4)2 (1-6), where B is a N,N-donor phenanthroline base, namely, 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1, 2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 3, 4), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 5, 6), and L is the monoanion of 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ in 1, 3, 5) and 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline (CQ in 2, 4, 6). The X-ray single crystal structures of complexes 1 and 2 as PF6- salts revealed a distorted octahedral CoN5O coordination environment. Complexes demonstrated good stability in an aqueous buffer medium and in the presence of ascorbic acid as a reductant. Cytotoxicity studies using a panel of nine cancer cell lines showed that complex 6, with the dppz and CQ ligands, was significantly toxic against most cancer cell types, yielding IC50 values in the range of 2 to 14 μM. Complexes 1, 3, and 5, containing the HQ ligand, displayed lower toxicity compared to their CQ counterparts. The phenanthroline complexes demonstrated marginal toxicity towards the tested cell lines, while the dpq complexes exhibited moderate toxicity. Interestingly, all complexes demonstrated negligible toxicity towards normal HEK-293 kidney cells (IC50 > 100 μM). The observed cytotoxicity of the complexes correlated well with their lipophilicities (dppz > dpq > phen). The cytotoxicity of complex 6 was comparable to that of the clinical drug cisplatin under similar conditions. Notably, neither the HQ nor the CQ ligands alone demonstrated noticeable toxicity against any of the tested cell lines. The Annexin-V-FITC and DCFDA assays revealed that the cell death mechanism induced by the complexes involved apoptosis, which could be attributed to the metal-assisted generation of reactive oxygen species. Overall, the dppz complex 6, with its remarkable cytotoxicity against a broad range of cancer cells and negligible toxicity toward normal cells, holds significant potential for cancer chemotherapeutic applications.

Concomitant [18F]F-FAZA and [18F]F-FDG Imaging of Gynecological Cancer Xenografts: Insight into Tumor Hypoxia

BACKGROUND/AIM

Herein we assessed the feasibility of imaging protocols using both hypoxia-specific [18F]F-FAZA and [18F]F-FDG in bypassing the limitations derived from the non-specific findings of [18F]F-FDG PET imaging of tumor-related hypoxia.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

CoCl2-generated hypoxia was induced in multidrug resistant (Pgp+) or sensitive (Pgp-) human ovarian (Pgp- A2780, Pgp+ A2780AD), and cervix carcinoma (Pgp- KB-3-1, Pgp+ KB-V-1) cell lines to establish corresponding tumor-bearing mouse models. Prior to [18F]F-FDG/[18F]F-FAZA-based MiniPET imaging, in vitro [18F]F-FDG uptake measurements and western blotting were used to verify the presence of hypoxia.

RESULTS

Elevated GLUT-1, and hexokinase enzyme-II expression driven by CoCl2-induced activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α explains enhanced cellular [18F]F-FDG accumulation. No difference was observed in the [18F]F-FAZA accretion of Pgp+ and Pgp- tumors. Tumor-to-muscle ratios for [18F]F-FAZA measured at 110-120 min postinjection (6.2±0.1) provided the best contrasted images for the delineation of PET-oxic and PET-hypoxic intratumor regions. Although all tumors exhibited heterogenous uptake of both radiopharmaceuticals, greater differences for [18F]F-FAZA between the tracer avid and non-accumulating regions indicate its superiority over [18F]F-FDG. Spatial correlation between [18F]F-FGD and [18F]F-FAZA scans confirms that hypoxia mostly occurs in regions with highly active glucose metabolism.

CONCLUSION

The addition of [18F]F-FAZA PET to [18F]F-FGD imaging may add clinical value in determining hypoxic sub-regions.

Metal levels and glomerular filtration rate after unilateral Birmingham Hip Resurfacing

Aims

The first aim of this study was to evaluate whether preoperative renal function is associated with postoperative changes in whole blood levels of metal ions in patients who have undergone a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) arthroplasty with a metal-on-metal bearing. The second aim was to evaluate whether exposure to increased cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) levels for ten years adversely affected renal function.

Methods

As part of a multicentre, prospective post-approval study, whole blood samples were sent to a single specialized laboratory to determine Co and Cr levels, and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The study included patients with 117 unrevised unilateral BHRs. There were 36 females (31%). The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery of 51.3 years (SD 6.5), and they all had preoperative one-, four-, five-, and ten-year laboratory data. The mean follow-up was 10.1 years (SD 0.2).

Results

Median Co levels at one year postoperatively increased significantly compared with the preoperative values, by a factor of 9.7, from 0.13 to 1.26 ppb (p < 0.001), and the median Cr levels increased significantly by a factor of 2.5, from 0.60 to 1.50 ppb (p < 0.001). Lower preoperative eGFRs were associated with significantly larger increases in Co at one year compared with the preoperative levels (ρ = -0.26; p = 0.005), but there was no relationship between preoperative eGFRs and changes in Cr at one year (ρ = -0.13; p = 0.153). Metal levels remained relatively constant with the passage of time, with a median ten-year value of 1.12 ppb for Co and 1.29 ppb for Cr. There was no significant relationship between the Co and Cr levels at ten-year follow-up and the change in eGFR from the preoperative level to that at ten years (ρ = -0.02; p = 0.827 for Co; ρ = -0.008; p = 0.933 for Cr).

Conclusion

Although patients with lower preoperative eGFRs tended to have larger increases in Co levels at one year, increased metal levels for patients who underwent unilateral BHR did not adversely affect renal function during the first ten postoperative years.

Development of efficient and economic Bi2O3/BN/Co3O4 composite photocatalyst: Degradation mechanism, pathway and toxicity study of norfloxacin

The production of cheap, efficient, and stable photocatalysts for degrading antibiotic contaminants remains challenging. Herein, Bi2O3/boron nitride (BN)/Co3O4 ternary composites were synthesized using the impregnation method. The morphological characteristics, structural features, and photochemical properties of the prepared photocatalysts were investigated via X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible (Vis) diffuse reflectance spectrum techniques. BN was used as a charge transfer bridge in the ternary composites, which afforded a heterojunction between the two semiconductors. The formation of the heterojunction substantially enhanced the charge separation and improved the photocatalyst performance. The degradation activity of the Bi2O3/BN/Co3O4 ternary composites against norfloxacin (NOR) under Vis light irradiation was investigated. The degradation rate of NOR using 5-wt% Bi2O3/BN/Co3O4 reached 98% in 180 min, indicating excellent photocatalytic performance. The ternary composites also exhibited high photostability with a degradation efficiency of 88.4% after five cycles. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (•O2-), and holes (h+) played a synergistic role in the photocatalytic reaction, where h+ and •O2- were more important than •OH. Consequently, seven intermediates and major photocatalytic degradation pathways were identified. Toxicity experiments showed that the toxicity of the degradation solution to Chlorella pyrenoidosa decreased. Finally, the ecotoxicity of NOR and its intermediates were analyzed using the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool, with most intermediates exhibiting low toxicity.

The contribution of hypoxia to the pathophysiology of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) has not yet been fully elucidated. This study evaluated the effect of hypoxia on the phenotype and function of SMCs derived from the human normal great saphenous veins (NGSVs).

METHODS

Fifteen NGSV tissue samples were collected. SMCs were isolated and cultured. Proliferation, migration, adhesion, senescence, and the structure of cytoskeletal filaments in SMCs were observed. mRNA and protein expression of Bax, Bcl-2, caspase-3, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2, MMP-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1, and TIMP-2 was detected by fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunoblotting in the cobalt chloride (CoCl2) and the control groups.

RESULTS

A decrease in the number of cytoskeletal filaments was observed. mRNA and protein expression of Bas and caspase-3 was significantly decreased, while the quantity of proliferation, migration, adhesion, senescence, and mRNA and protein expression of Bcl-2, MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 in SMCs in the CoCl2 group were significantly increased compared with the control group.

CONCLUSION

Under hypoxic conditions, the phenotype and function of SMCs derived from the human NGSVs were dysregulated, suggesting that VSMCs switch from the contractile phenotype to the secretory or synthetic phenotype, and more dedifferentiate, resulting in extracellular matrix deposition and apoptotic decrease through the intrinsic pathway.

Selective electrophilic attack towards organic micropollutants with superior Fenton-like activity by biochar-supported cobalt single-atom catalyst

The global shortage of freshwater and inadequate supply of clean water have necessitated the implementation of robust technologies for wastewater purification, and Fenton-like chemistry is a highly-promising approach. However, realizing the rapid Fenton-like chemistry for high-efficiency degradation of organic micropollutants (OMs) remains challenging. Herein, one novel system was constructed by a Co single-atom catalyst activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and the optimal system (SA-Co-NBC-0.2/PMS) achieved unprecedented catalytic performance towards a model OM [Iohexol (IOH)], i.e., almost 100% decay ratio in only 10 min (the observed rate constant: 0.444 min-1) with high electrophilic species 1O2 (singlet oxygen) generation. Theoretical calculations unveiled that Co-N4 sites preferred to adsorb the terminal-O of PMS (more negative adsorption energy than other O sites: -32.67 kcal/mol), promoting the oxidation of PMS to generate 1O2. Iodine (I)23 (0.1097), I24 (0.1154) and I25 (0.0898) on IOH with higher f- electrophilic values were thus identified as the main attack sites. Furthermore, 16S ribosomal RNA high-throughput sequencing and quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis illustrated the environmentally-benign property of the SA-Co-NBC-0.2 and the tapering ecological risk during IOH degradation process. Significantly, this work comprehensively checked the competence of the SA-Co-NBC-0.2/PMS system for organics abatement in practical wastewater.
