Abstract
The present prospective cohort study aimed to determine whether dietary antioxidants were associated with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Another objective was to find out whether such associations could be modified by the BMI status. A total of 2188 Tehranian adults aged 21-84 years, free of T2DM with the validated FFQ, was entered in the study. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for confounders were used to assess the association between dietary antioxidants and incident T2DM in total population, as well as in subjects with various BMI statuses. During 8·9 (8·1-9·6) years of follow-up, dietary vitamin E significantly decreased the incident T2DM, after adjustment for confounders. However, other dietary antioxidants were not shown to be significantly associated with incident T2DM. The interaction between dietary vitamin E, Mg and BMI status was found to influence the risk of T2DM (Pfor interaction < 0·05). After stratification of subjects based on BMI status, it was found that vitamin E and Mg decreased the risk of T2DM only among normal-weight individual. Also, an inverse association was found among dietary vitamin C, dietary Zn and the risk of T2DM in individuals with normal weight but not in overweight and obese individuals; however, the interaction test tended to be significant for these dietary variables. Dietary antioxidants including vitamin E, vitamin C, Zn and Mg when accompanied by healthy weight, may bring benefits to the prevention of T2DM.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the longitudinal association between seaweed and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Korean population. Data from 148 404 Korean adults aged 40 years and older without a history of T2DM, cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline were obtained from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study data. The participants' seaweed intake was obtained using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and the diagnosis of T2DM was surveyed through a self-reported questionnaire during follow-up. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) for T2DM were calculated using the Cox proportional hazard regression, and the dose-response relationship was analysed using a restricted cubic spline regression. Participants had a mean follow-up period of 5 years. Participants with the highest seaweed intake had a 7 % lower risk of T2DM compared with the group with the lowest intake (95 % CI (0·87, 0·99)). Interestingly, this association was stronger in those with normal weight (HR: 0·88, 95 % CI (0·81, 0·95)), while no association was observed in participants with obesity. Spline regression revealed an inverse linear relationship between seaweed intake and T2DM risk in participants with normal weight, showing a trend where increased seaweed intake is related to lower instances of T2DM (Pfor nonlinearity = 0·48). Seaweed intake is inversely associated with the onset of T2DM in Korean adults with normal weight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is the most common type of diabetes. However, research on the relationship between blue light exposure and diabetes development is limited. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between blue light exposure and T2D incidence and whether it is affected by sleep duration, physical activity, outdoor activity time, and genetic susceptibility. METHODS A total of 471,686 participants without diabetes were recruited from the UK Biobank cohort. T2D incidence was assessed using hospital inpatient records. Blue light exposure was calculated based on the time spent watching TV, using a computer, and playing computer games, which was determined using an online questionnaire. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the survival relationship between blue light exposure and T2D, as well as the potential modification effects. RESULT A total of 18,738 cases of T2D were documented during the median follow-up of 13.04 years. After adjusting for potential confounders, the participants with heavy blue light exposure had a greater risk of T2D compared to those with mild blue light exposure (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12-1.23). A significant association between blue light exposure and T2D risk was observed among the participants with heavy physical activity (HR = 1.39, 95%CI: 1.25-1.55), healthy sleep habits (HR = 1.23, 95%CI: 1.10-1.36), higher outdoor activity time (HR = 1.14, 95%CI: 1.07-1.22), or high genetic susceptibility (HR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.14-1.35). However, this association became non-significant among the participants with low genetic susceptibility (HR = 1.05, 95%CI: 0.97-1.15). CONCLUSION The present study showed that blue light exposure is associated with a greater risk of T2D independent of classical T2D risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2D) is a chronic disease with a high prevalence worldwide. Human literature suggests factors beyond well-known risk factors (e.g., age, body mass index) for T2D: cytomegalovirus serostatus, season of birth, maternal age, birth weight, and depression. Nothing is known, however, about whether these variables are influential in primate models of T2D. METHODS Using a retrospective methodology, we identified 22 cases of spontaneously occurring T2D among rhesus monkeys at our facility. A control sample of n = 1199 was identified. RESULTS Animals born to mothers that were ≤5.5 years of age, and animals that showed heightened Activity and Emotionality in response to brief separation in infancy, had a greater risk for development of T2D in adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Knowledge of additional risk factors for T2D could help colony managers better identify at-risk animals and enable diabetes researchers to select animals that might be more responsive to their manipulations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The multicentre randomised trial YOMEGA (NCT02139813) comparing the one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) with the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) confirmed the non-inferiority of OAGB on weight loss outcomes at 24 months. We aimed to report weight loss, metabolic, and safety outcomes at 5 years. METHODS YOMEGA is a prospective, open-label, non-inferiority, randomised trial conducted at nine centres in France. Inclusion criteria were BMI of 40 kg/m2 or more, or 35 kg/m2 or more with comorbidities. Key exclusion criteria were severe gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or Barrett's oesophagus and previous bariatric surgery. Patients were randomly assigned (1 :1) to OAGB (one gastrojejunal anastomosis with a 200 cm biliopancreatic limb) or RYGB (with a 150 cm alimentary limb and a 50 cm biliary limb), stratified by centre, with blocks of variable size. The primary endpoint of this extension study was percentage excess BMI loss and was analysed in the per-protocol population, including patients with data who were operated on with the technique randomly assigned to them and excluding patients with major deviations from the protocol during the follow-up (change of surgical technique, death, or withdrawal of consent). Non-inferiority was concluded for the primary endpoint if the upper bound of the CI was less than the non-inferiority limit (7 percentage points). YOMEGA is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02139813, and the 5-year follow-up of YOMEGA is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05549271. FINDINGS Between May 13, 2014, and March 2, 2016, 253 patients were randomly assigned to OAGB (n=129) or RYGB (n=124), and from these patients 114 in the OAGB group and 118 in the RYGB group were included in the per-protocol analysis. In the per-protocol population, at baseline, mean age was 43·0 years (SD 10·8), mean BMI was 44·0 kg/m2 (5·6), 54 (23%) patients were male and 178 (77%) were female; 55 (27%) of 207 patients had type 2 diabetes. After 5 years, mean percentage excess BMI loss was -75·6% (SD 28·1) in the OAGB group versus -71·4% (SD 29·8) in the RYGB group, confirming non-inferiority (mean difference -4·1% [90% CI -12·0 to 3·7], p=0·0099). Remission of type 2 diabetes was similar in both groups. Nutritional status did not differ; the most common adverse event was clinical gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, occurring in 27 (41%) of 66 patients in the OAGB group versus 14 (18%) of 76 patients in the RYGB group (p=0·0030). Among serious adverse events, ten (8%) of 127 patients converted from OAGB to RYGB. 171 (68%) of 253 patients were followed up. INTERPRETATION OAGB was not inferior to RYGB regarding percentage excess BMI loss at 5 years with similar metabolic outcomes. The high rate of clinical gastro-oesophageal reflux disease after OAGB raises questions about its long-term consequences, which need to be further investigated. FUNDING Medtronic.

Abstract
The social and economic constructs of the United Kingdom (UK) provide a fertile food environment for the dramatic expansion in the ultra-processed food (UPF) market, driving increased UPF consumption. This has coincided with the significant increase in the incidence and prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, with an inherent impact on morbidity and mortality. Our review aims to assess the current epidemiological and public health trends in the United Kingdom, specifically examining consumption of UPFs and subsequent development of NCDs, summarizing existing meta-analytical and experimental approaches. First, we address important socioeconomic and psychosocial domains that may contribute to increased availability and consumption of UPF. Additionally, we explore the putative mechanistic basis for the association between UPFs and NCDs: partly attributable to their energy density, the macro- and micronutrient composition (including high refined carbohydrate, saturated, and trans fats composition, in addition to low fiber and protein content), and artificially engineered additives and other compounds that adversely affect health in inadequately researched pathophysiological pathways. This review highlights the importance of promoting minimally processed diets to both clinical and political decision makers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The perception among healthcare workers is that the Indian tribal (indigenous) population are less affected by diabetes. This paper reports the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and its associated factors among tribal populations from six districts across India. METHODOLOGY Random blood glucose (RBG) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) were measured for 8486 and 3131 adults, respectively, with a glucose meter. FBG ≥ 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) and RBG ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) were used to diagnose diabetes. In addition, blood pressure, anthropometric (height, weight, waist and hip circumferences), socio-demographic (age, gender, education, type of tribe and type of village) and behavioural data (tobacco smoking, non-smoking tobacco use and alcohol consumption) were collected. RESULTS The overall prevalence of type 2 diabetes, based on RBG, was 4.77% (95% CI: 4.33-5.25). The prevalence of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, based on FBG, was 6.80% (95% CI: 5.95-7.74) and 8.69% (7.72-9.73), respectively. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes was significantly associated with age (p<0.001), smokeless tobacco use (p < 0.05), hypertension (p < 0.001) and obesity (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION The prevalence of type 2 diabetes among the Indian tribal population reported in this study is less than the national average of 7.3% for the general population. Hypertension and obesity were the major risk factors. Due to changing behavioural patterns, including dietary behaviour, there is likely to be an increase in the prevalence of hypertension and obesity, which further leads to increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Hence, appropriate interventions are to be initiated by the primary healthcare system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous research has shown that pulse pressure (PP) has a significant role in the start and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, there is little proof that PP and pre-diabetes mellitus (Pre-DM) are related. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between PP and incident pre-DM in a substantial cohort of Chinese participants. DESIGN The 'DATADRYAD' database (www.Datadryad.org) was used to retrieve the data for this secondary retrospective cohort analysis. PARTICIPANTS Data from 182 672 Chinese individuals who participated in the medical examination programme were recorded in this retrospective cohort study between 2010 and 2016 across 32 sites and 11 cities in China. SETTING PP assessed at baseline and incident pre-DM during follow-up were the target-independent and dependent variables. The association between PP and pre-DM was investigated using Cox proportional hazards regression. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES The outcome was incident pre-DM. Impaired fasting glucose levels (fasting blood glucose between 5.6 and 6.9 mmol/L) were used to define pre-DM. RESULTS After controlling for confounding variables, PP was positively correlated with incident pre-DM among Chinese adults (HR 1.009, 95% CI 1.007 to 1.010). Additionally, at a PP inflection point of 29 mm Hg, a non-linear connection between the PP and incident pre-DM was discovered. Increased PP was an independent risk factor for developing pre-DM when PP was greater than 29 mm Hg. However, their association was not significant when PP was less than 29 mm Hg. According to subgroup analyses, females, never-smokers and non-obesity correlated more significantly with PP and pre-DM. CONCLUSION We discovered that higher PP independently correlated with pre-DM risk in this study of Chinese participants. The connection between PP and incident pre-DM was also non-linear. High PP levels were related to a higher risk of pre-DM when PP was above 29 mm Hg. ARTICLE FOCUS Our study investigated the relationship between PP and incident pre-DM in a secondary retrospective cohort of Chinese participants.

Abstract
To analyze the effects of high ligation plus endovenous laser therapy on intraoperative blood loss, postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score, and complications in patients with varicosis of great saphenous vein and type 2 diabetes. About 61 patients with varicosis of great saphenous vein and type 2 diabetes treated at our hospital were included. About 32 patients (37 affected limbs) receiving conventional surgery were included in control group, while 29 patients (34 affected limbs) receiving high ligation plus endovenous laser therapy were included in study group. The intraoperative blood loss, operation time, length of postoperative hospital stay, postoperative VAS scores, blood glucose levels, Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS), and incidence of complications were compared between the two groups. Compared with the control group, there were less intraoperative blood loss (P < .05), shorter operation time (P < .05), and shorter length of postoperative hospital stay in the study group (P < .05). Besides, there was also lower VAS scores at different time points after surgery in the study group than in the control group (P < .05). Blood glucose levels were decreased in both groups after surgery (P < .05). Moreover, VCSS was decreased in either group at 3 months after surgery (P < .05). Blood glucose levels of patients in the study group were lower than those of the control group after surgery (P < .05). The VCSS was also lower in the study group at 3 months after surgery than in the control group (P < .05). High ligation with endovenous laser therapy for varicosis of great saphenous vein in patients with type 2 diabetes was safe and feasible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this analysis was to investigate whether habitual intake of total dairy (TD) or different dairy types (liquid, solid, fermented, non-fermented, low-fat, high-fat, low-sugar and high-sugar dairy) during adolescence is associated with biomarkers of low-grade inflammation as well as risk factors of type 2 diabetes in young adulthood. DESIGN Multivariable linear regression analyses were used to investigate prospective associations between estimated TD intake as well as intake of different types of dairy and a pro-inflammatory score, based on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, IL-6, IL-18, leptin and adiponectin, and insulin resistance assessed as Homeostasis Model Assessment Insulin Resistance in an open-cohort study. SETTING Dortmund, Germany. PARTICIPANTS Data from participants (n 375) of the DOrtmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) study were included, for whom at least two 3-d weighed dietary records during adolescence (median age: 11 years) and one blood sample in young adulthood (>18 years) were available. RESULTS There was no statistically significant association between TD intake or intake of any dairy type and the pro-inflammatory score (all P > 0·05). TD intake as well as each dairy type intake and insulin resistance also showed no association (all P > 0·05). CONCLUSIONS The habitual intake of dairy or individual types of dairy during adolescence does not seem to have a major impact on low-grade systemic inflammation and insulin resistance in the long term. There was no indication regarding a restriction of dairy intake for healthy children and adolescents in terms of diabetes risk reduction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between walking speed and the risk of type 2 diabetes. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Scopus, CENTRAL and Web of Science to 30 May 2023. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES We included cohort studies that explored the association between walking speed and the risk of type 2 diabetes in adults. We used random-effects meta-analyses to calculate relative risk (RR) and risk difference (RD). We rated the credibility of subgroup differences and the certainty of evidence using the Instrument to assess the Credibility of Effect Modification ANalyses (ICEMAN) and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) tools, respectively. RESULTS Ten cohort studies were included. Compared with easy/casual walking (<3.2 km/hour), the RR of type 2 diabetes was 0.85 (95% CI 0.70 to 1.00); RD=0.86 (95% CI 1.72 to 0) fewer cases per 100 patients; n=4, GRADE=low) for average/normal walking (3.2-4.8 km/hour), 0.76 (95% CI 0.65 to 0.87); RD=1.38 (95% CI 2.01 to 0.75) fewer cases per 100 patients; n=10, GRADE=low) for fairly brisk walking (4.8-6.4 km/hour) and 0.61 (95% CI 0.49 to 0.73; RD=2.24 (95% CI 2.93 to 1.55) fewer cases per 100 patients; n=6, GRADE=moderate) for brisk/striding walking (>6.4 km/hour). There was no significant or credible difference across subgroups based on adjustment for the total volume of physical activity and time spent walking per day. Dose-response analysis suggested that the risk of type 2 diabetes decreased significantly at a walking speed of 4 km/h and above. CONCLUSIONS Low to moderate certainty evidence, mainly from studies with a high risk of bias, suggests that walking at faster speeds is associated with a graded decrease in the risk of type 2 diabetes. Abstract
BACKGROUND Interactions between risk factors may influence disease severity. Knowing this relationship is important for preventive interventions and disease control. The purpose of this study was to determine the interactions effects of obesity and hypertension on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS The data of 9,283 adults 35 to 65 years were examined from the cohort study of Ravansar Non-Communicable Disease (RaNCD). Waist circumference (WC) was used to identify both general and abdominal obesity based on body mass index (BMI). To assess the interaction between hypertension and obesity (general/abdominal) and the risk of T2DM, the additive interaction was calculated. RESULTS The adjusted odds ratios for T2DM were 2.38 (1.67, 3.41) in men and 4.02 (2.47, 6.47) in women for the combinations of hypertension and abdominal obesity. The adjusted odds ratios for T2DM were 2.53 (1.63, 3.82) in men and 2.66 (1.92, 3.70) in women for the combinations of hypertension and general obesity. The results of the additive interaction indicators were inconsistent with gender. The relative excess risk due to interaction (interaction between hypertension and central obesity) (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) and synergy index (SI) were0.27 (-1.01, 1.54), 0.11 (-0.41, 0.63) and 1.23 (0.41, 3.68) in male and were 0.61 (-1.12, 2.33), 0.23 (0.08, 0.37) and 1.26 (0.60, 2.61) in female, respectively. CONCLUSION General/abdominal obesity and hypertension have a synergistic effect on the risk of T2DM. The recommendation for preventing T2DM is lifestyle modification. Large longitudinal studies are necessary to investigate causal relationships.

Abstract
Importance Understanding the interplay between sleep duration, dietary habits, and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) is crucial for public health and diabetes prevention strategies. Objective To investigate the associations of type of diet and duration of sleep with the development of T2D. Design, Setting, and Participants Data derived from the UK Biobank baseline investigation (2006-2010) were analyzed for this cohort study between May 1 and September 30, 2023. The association between sleep duration and healthy dietary patterns with the risk of T2D was investigated during a median (IQR) follow-up of 12.5 (11.8-13.2) years (end of follow-up, September 30, 2021). Exposure For the analysis, 247 867 participants were categorized into 4 sleep duration groups: normal (7-8 hours per day), mild short (6 hours per day), moderate short (5 hours per day), and extreme short (3-4 hours per day). Their dietary habits were evaluated based on population-specific consumption of red meat, processed meat, fruits, vegetables, and fish, resulting in a healthy diet score ranging from 0 (unhealthiest) to 5 (healthiest). Main Outcomes and Measures Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for the development of T2D across various sleep duration groups and healthy diet scores. Results The cohort comprised 247 867 participants with a mean [SD] age of 55.9 [8.1] years, of whom 52.3% were female. During the follow-up, 3.2% of participants were diagnosed with T2D based on hospital registry data. Cox regression analysis, adjusted for confounding variables, indicated a significant increase in the risk of T2D among participants with 5 hours or less of daily sleep. Individuals sleeping 5 hours per day exhibited a 1.16 adjusted HR (95% CI, 1.05-1.28), and individuals sleeping 3 to 4 hours per day exhibited a 1.41 adjusted HR (95% CI, 1.19-1.68) compared with individuals with normal sleep duration. Furthermore, individuals with the healthiest dietary patterns had a reduced risk of T2D (HR, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.63-0.88]). The association between short sleep duration and increased risk of T2D persisted even for individuals following a healthy diet, but there was no multiplicative interaction between sleep duration and healthy diet score. Conclusions and Relevance In this cohort study involving UK residents, habitual short sleep duration was associated with increased risk of developing T2D. This association persisted even among participants who maintained a healthy diet. To validate these findings, further longitudinal studies are needed, incorporating repeated measures of sleep (including objective assessments) and dietary habits.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the association between long-term use of antibiotics during childhood and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using a prospective cohort from the UK Biobank. METHODS Participants in the UK Biobank who completed the online survey for digestive health were included in this prospective cohort study. A Cox regression model adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, general health factors, mental health, lifestyle factors, comorbidities, and medication use was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and confidence interval (CI) of the association between long-term use of antibiotics in the childhood and incident T2DM. RESULTS The final analyses included 152,992 participants and 22,133 of them received long-term/recurrent antibiotics as children or teenagers. During the follow-up, 3370 and 681 incident T2DM cases occurred in the non-exposed and exposed groups respectively. Long-term use of antibiotics in childhood was associated with an increased risk of T2DM, with an HR of 1.16 (95 % CI, 1.07-1.27) after adjusting for potential confounders. Results in the subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were highly consistent with the primary analyses. CONCLUSIONS Long-term use of antibiotics in childhood is associated with the risk of T2DM in middle and old age in the UK Biobank population.

Abstract
The global burden of type 2 diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate, fuelled by the obesity epidemic, with significant associated health and economic consequences and apparent inequalities. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a major source of added sugars in diets worldwide and have been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes through a variety of mechanisms, including excess weight. Taxing SSBs has become a promising public health strategy to reduce consumption and mitigate the burden of type 2 diabetes. A substantial body of evidence suggests that SSB taxes lead to increased prices and subsequent reduced consumption, with a potentially greater effect among lower socioeconomic groups. This highlights the potential for tax policies to have an impact on type 2 diabetes and address health inequalities. Evidence from several ongoing SSB tax schemes, including sales and excise taxes, indicates positive effects on improving consumption patterns, and modelling studies point to health gains by averting type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases. In contrast, evidence from empirical evaluation of the impact of SSB tax is scarce. Continued monitoring and the strengthening of evaluation research to develop context-tailored policies are required. In addition, there is a need to implement complementary efforts to amplify the impact of SSB taxation and effectively address the global burden of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
The Global Burden of Disease assessment estimates that 20% of global type 2 diabetes cases are related to chronic exposure to particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of 2·5 μm or less (PM2·5). With 99% of the global population residing in areas where air pollution levels are above current WHO air quality guidelines, and increasing concern in regard to the common drivers of air pollution and climate change, there is a compelling need to understand the connection between air pollution and cardiometabolic disease, and pathways to address this preventable risk factor. This Review provides an up to date summary of the epidemiological evidence and mechanistic underpinnings linking air pollution with cardiometabolic risk. We also outline approaches to improve awareness, and discuss personal-level, community, governmental, and policy interventions to help mitigate the growing global public health risk of air pollution exposure.

Abstract
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a large number of heterogeneous compounds formed by the glycation of proteins, fats or nucleic acids. Endogenous AGEs have been associated with various health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation is thought to be one of the main mechanisms in the development of these disorders. Although AGEs are produced endogenously in the body, exogenous sources such as smoking and diet also contribute to the body pool. Therefore, when the AGE pool in the body rises above physiological levels, different pathological conditions may occur through various mechanisms, especially inflammation. While the effects of endogenous AGEs on the development of inflammation have been studied relatively extensively, and current evidence indicates that dietary AGEs (dAGEs) contribute to the body's AGE pool, it is not yet known whether dAGEs have the same effect on the development of inflammation as endogenous AGEs. Therefore, this review aimed to evaluate the results of cross-sectional and intervention studies to understand whether dAGEs are associated with inflammation and, if there is an effect on inflammation, through which mechanisms this effect might occur.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevention policies against type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) focus solely on individual healthy lifestyle behaviours, while an increasing body of research recognises the involvement of environmental determinants (ED) (cultural norms of land management and planning, local foodscape, built environment, pollution, and neighbourhood deprivation). Precise knowledge of this relationship is essential to proposing a prevention strategy integrating public health and spatial planning. Unfortunately, issues related to the consistency and synthesis of methods, and results in this field of research limit the development of preventive strategies. This systematic review aims to improve knowledge about the relationship between the risk of developing T2DM in adulthood and long-term exposure to its ED during childhood or teenage years. METHODS This protocol is presented according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) tools. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, EBSCO, and grey literature from the Laval University Libraries databases will be used for data collection on main concepts such as 'type 2 diabetes mellitus', 'zoning' or 'regional, urban, or rural areas land uses', 'local food landscape', 'built environment', 'pollution', and 'deprivation'. The Covidence application will store the collected data for selection and extraction based on the Population Exposure Comparator Outcome and Study design approach (PECOS). Studies published until December 31, 2023, in English or French, used quantitative data about individuals aged 18 and over that report on T2DM, ED (cultural norms of land management and planning, local foodscape, built environment, and neighbourhood deprivation), and their association (involving only risk estimators) will be included. Then, study quality and risk of bias will be conducted according to the combined criteria and ratings from the ROBINS-E (Risk of Bias in Non-randomised Studies-of Exposures) tools and the 'Effective Public Health Practice Project' (EPHPP). Finally, the analytical synthesis will be produced using the 'Synthesis Without Meta-analysis' (SWiM) guidelines. DISCUSSION This systematic review will summarise available evidence on ED associated with T2DM. The results will contribute to improving current knowledge and developing more efficient cross-sectoral interventions in land management and public health in this field of research. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To verify the association between early-life nutrition and chronic adult diseases. DATA SOURCES Medline, Embase, Cochrane Database, and Lilacs. SUMMARY OF FINDS The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis postulates that a mismatch between early-life circumstances and later-life situations may have an impact on chronic diseases. In this review, the authors emphasize the research supporting the impact of early nutrition on the origins of adult height, obesity and metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and reproductive outcomes. CONCLUSION Even though this is a new topic and there are still many research questions to be answered, there is strong evidence that both deficiency and excess nutrition in early life can cause epigenetic changes that have effects that last a lifetime and contribute to the development of chronic diseases. Public health efforts to protect adults from getting chronic diseases should focus on nutrition in the first 1000 days of life, from conception to the end of the second year of life.

Abstract
The increasing age of patients receiving renal replacement therapy (RRT) in Turkey, coupled with a shortage of kidney donors, has led to longer waiting times for transplants and an escalation in mortality rates. This retrospective study aimed to assess the effect on transplant outcomes of accepting kidneys from donors ≥70 years of age, given the rising number of older patients in the population. In all, 1400 patients were transplanted with kidneys from donors >50 years, with patient and graft survival as primary endpoints. Our results demonstrated that the most significant risk factors for graft function were recipient age >65 years, male sex, and presence of type 2 diabetes. Moreover, kidneys from donors ≥75 years of age achieved a half-life of 5 years. These findings suggest that donor age does not necessarily correlate with graft failure and that transplantation from older donors could help alleviate the organ shortage. Further research is needed to substantiate these conclusions.

Abstract
Overconsumption of energy-rich foods that disrupt caloric balance is a fundamental cause of overweight, obesity and diabetes. Dysglycemia and the resulting cardiovascular disease cause substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide, as well as high societal cost. The prevalence of obesity in childhood and adolescence is increasing, leading to younger diabetes diagnosis, and higher severity of microvascular and macrovascular complications. An important goal is to identify early life conditions that increase future metabolic risk, toward the goal of preventing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. An ample body of evidence implicates prenatal and postnatal childhood growth trajectories in the programming of adult metabolic disease. Human epidemiological data show that accelerated childhood growth increases risk of type 2 diabetes in adulthood. Type 2 diabetes results from the combination of insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell failure, but specific mechanisms by which accelerated postnatal growth impact one or both of these processes remain uncertain. This review explores the metabolic impact of overnutrition during postnatal life in humans and in rodent models, with specific attention to the connection between accelerated childhood growth and future adiposity, insulin resistance, β-cell mass and β-cell dysfunction. With improved knowledge in this area, we might one day be able to modulate nutrition and growth in the critical postnatal window to maximize lifelong metabolic health.

Abstract
AIM We aimed to evaluate the metabolite ratios that could predict the clinical incidence or remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). METHODS The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to assess 1813 individuals without T2D to test the predictive value of metabolite ratios for T2D incidence and 451 newly diagnosed T2D for remission. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to determine the best cut-off values for the metabolite ratios. Survival analyses were performed to compare the four subgroups defined by baseline metabolite ratios and clinical status of obesity. RESULTS The alanine/glycine was the most significant marker for T2D incidence (hazard ratio per SD: 1.24; p < .001). On the other hand, metabolite hydroxy sphingomyelin C22:2 was most specific for T2D remission (hazard ratio per SD: 1.32; p = .029). Survival analysis of T2D incidence among the subgroups defined by the combination of alanine/glycine and obesity showed the group with a high alanine/glycine and obesity had the highest risk of T2D incidence (p < .001). The alanine/glycine as a T2D risk marker was also validated in the independent external data. CONCLUSIONS The combination of obesity and the alanine/glycine ratio can be used to evaluate the diabetes risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Air pollution may be a risk factor for physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour (SED) through discouraging active lifestyles, impairing fitness and contributing to chronic diseases with potentially important consequences for population health. METHODS Using generalized estimating equations, we examined the associations between long-term particulate matter with diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), ≤10 μm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and annual change in accelerometer-measured SED, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and steps in adults at risk of type 2 diabetes within the Walking Away from Type 2 Diabetes trial. We adjusted for important confounders including social deprivation and measures of the built environment. RESULTS From 808 participants, 644 had complete data (1605 observations; 64.7% men; mean age 63.86 years). PM2.5, NO2 and PM10 were not associated with change in MVPA/steps but were associated with change in SED, with a 1 ugm-3 increase associated with 6.38 (95% confidence interval: 0.77, 12.00), 1.52 (0.49, 2.54) and 4.48 (0.63, 8.34) adjusted annual change in daily minutes, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Long-term PM2.5, NO2 and PM10 exposures were associated with an annual increase in SED: ~11-22 min/day per year across the sample range of exposure (three standard deviations). Future research should investigate whether interventions to reduce pollution may influence SED.

Abstract
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing in middle- and low-income countries, and this disease is a burden on public health systems. Notably, dietary components are crucial regulatory factors in T2DM. Plant-based dietary patterns and certain food groups, such as whole grains, legumes, nuts, vegetables, and fruits, are inversely correlated with diabetes incidence. We conducted the present study to determine the association between adherence to a plant-based diet and the risk of diabetes among adults. We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based RaNCD cohort study involving 3401 men and 3699 women. The plant-based diet index (PDI) was developed using a 118-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between the PDI score and the risk of T2DM. A total of 7100 participants with a mean age of 45.96 ± 7.78 years were analysed. The mean PDI scores in the first, second, and third tertiles (T) were 47.13 ± 3.41, 54.44 ± 1.69, and 61.57 ± 3.24, respectively. A lower PDI was significantly correlated with a greater incidence of T2DM (T1 = 7.50%, T2 = 4.85%, T3 = 4.63%; P value < 0.001). Higher PDI scores were associated with significantly increased intakes of fibre, vegetables, fruits, olives, olive oil, legumes, soy products, tea/coffee, whole grains, nuts, vitamin E, vitamin C, and omega-6 fatty acids (P value < 0.001). After adjusting for confounding variables, the odds of having T2DM were significantly lower (by 30%) at T3 of the PDI than at T1 (OR = 0.70; 95% CI = 0.51, 0.96; P value < 0.001). Our data suggest that adhering to plant-based diets comprising whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, vegetable oils, and tea/coffee can be recommended today to reduce the risk of T2DM.

Abstract
Obesity and obesity-related conditions today constitute a public health problem worldwide. Obesity is an "epidemic" chronic disorder, which is defined by the WHO as normal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. It is also defined for adults as a BMI that is greater than or equal to 30. The most common obesity-related diseases are type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and certain types of cancer. It has been also proven that obesity can have a negative effect on hair. It can lead to hair thinning. Patients with obesity can undergo bariatric surgery if they meet the inclusion criteria. The four common types of weight loss surgery include a duodenal switch with biliopancreatic diversion, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and sleeve gastrectomy. Bariatric surgery can affect skin and hair and is associated with telogen effluvium due to weight loss, microelement deficiency, anesthesia, low calorie intake, and low protein intake. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery can experience post-bariatric surgery depression. Hair loss can have a major impact on self-esteem, negatively affecting one's self-image. The purpose of this narrative review is to critically review how obesity, obesity-related diseases, and bariatric surgery affect hair health in general and the hair development cycle, and how they influence hair loss.

Abstract
Background Body mass index (BMI) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) are known risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but data on the prospective association of the combination of BMI and FPG with T2DM are limited. This study sought to characterize the association of the combination of BMI and FPG (ByG) with T2DM. Methods The current study used the NAGALA database. We categorized participants by tertiles of ByG. The association of ByG with T2DM was expressed with hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) after adjustment for potential risk factors. Results During a median follow-up of 6.19 years in the normoglycemia cohort and 5.58 years in the prediabetes cohort, the incidence of T2DM was 0.75% and 7.79%, respectively. Following multivariable adjustments, there were stepwise increases in T2DM with increasing tertiles of ByG. After a similar multivariable adjustment, the risk of T2DM was 2.57 (95% CI 2.26 - 2.92), 1.97 (95% CI 1.53 - 2.54) and 1.50 (95% CI 1.30 - 1.74) for a per-SD change in ByG in all populations, the normoglycemia cohort and the prediabetes cohort, respectively. Conclusion ByG was associated with an increased risk of T2DM in Japan. The result reinforced the importance of the combination of BMI and FPG in assessing T2DM risk.

Abstract
The UK Biobank is a cohort study that collects data on diet, lifestyle, biomarkers, and health to examine diet-disease associations. Based on the UK Biobank, we reviewed 36 studies on diet and three health conditions: type 2 diabetes (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. Most studies used one-time dietary data instead of repeated 24 h recalls, which may lead to measurement errors and bias in estimating diet-disease associations. We also found that most studies focused on single food groups or macronutrients, while few studies adopted a dietary pattern approach. Several studies consistently showed that eating more red and processed meat led to a higher risk of lung and colorectal cancer. The results suggest that high adherence to "healthy" dietary patterns (consuming various food types, with at least three servings/day of whole grain, fruits, and vegetables, and meat and processed meat less than twice a week) slightly lowers the risk of T2DM, CVD, and colorectal cancer. Future research should use multi-omics data and machine learning models to account for the complexity and interactions of dietary components and their effects on disease risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including childhood maltreatment, have been linked with increased risk of diabetes and obesity during adulthood. A comprehensive assessment on the associations between childhood maltreatment and all major endocrine diseases, as well as the relative importance of different proposed mechanistic pathways on these associations, is currently lacking. METHODS Based on the UK Biobank, we constructed a cohort including 151,659 participants with self-reported data on childhood maltreatment who were 30 years of age or older on/after January 1, 1985. All participants were followed from the index date (i.e., January 1, 1985, or their 30th birthday, whichever came later) until the first diagnosis of any or specific (12 individual diagnoses and 9 subtypes) endocrine diseases, death, or the end of follow-up (December 31, 2019), whichever occurred first. We used Cox models to examine the association of childhood maltreatment, treated as continuous (i.e., the cumulative number of experienced childhood maltreatment), ordinal (i.e., 0, 1 and ≥ 2), or binary (< 2 and ≥ 2) variable, with any and specific endocrine diseases, adjusted for multiple covariates. We further examined the risk of having multiple endocrine diseases using Linear or Logistic Regression models. Then, sequential mediation analyses were performed to assess the contribution of four possible mechanisms (i.e., suboptimal socioeconomic status (SES), psychological adversities, unfavorable lifestyle, and biological alterations) on the observed associations. RESULTS During an average follow-up of 30.8 years, 20,885 participants received a diagnosis of endocrine diseases. We observed an association between the cumulative number of experienced childhood maltreatment and increased risk of being diagnosed with any endocrine disease (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) = 1.10, 95% confidence interval 1.09-1.12). The HR was 1.26 (1.22-1.30) when comparing individuals ≥ 2 with those with < 2 experienced childhood maltreatment. We further noted the most pronounced associations for type 2 diabetes (1.40 (1.33-1.48)) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis-related endocrine diseases (1.38 (1.17-1.62)), and the association was stronger for having multiple endocrine diseases, compared to having one (odds ratio (95% CI) = 1.24 (1.19-1.30), 1.35 (1.27-1.44), and 1.52 (1.52-1.53) for 1, 2, and ≥ 3, respectively). Sequential mediation analyses showed that the association between childhood maltreatment and endocrine diseases was consistently and most distinctly mediated by psychological adversities (15.38 ~ 44.97%), while unfavorable lifestyle (10.86 ~ 25.32%) was additionally noted for type 2 diabetes whereas suboptimal SES (14.42 ~ 39.33%) for HPA-axis-related endocrine diseases. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates that adverse psychological sequel of childhood maltreatment constitutes the main pathway to multiple endocrine diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes and HPA-axis-related endocrine diseases. Therefore, increased access to evidence-based mental health services may also be pivotal in reducing the risk of endocrine diseases among childhood maltreatment-exposed individuals.

Abstract
Introduction Hypertriglyceridemia and its derivatives are independent predictors of diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM). However, the relationship between triglyceride concentrations within the normal range and the incidence of T2DM remains to be clarified. This study investigated the potential relationship between variations in plasma triglyceride levels within the normal range and T2DM onset using data from a longitudinal study of health and retirement in China. Methods Between, 2010 and, 2016, we conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 36,441 individuals with normal triglyceride levels. Using a Cox proportional hazards regression model, we examined the connection between normal triglyceride levels and T2DM incidence. We employed this method with smooth curve fitting to investigate potential nonlinear associations. Subgroup analyses were performed based on age, sex, body mass index, smoking and drinking status, hypertension, and family history of diabetes. Results A significant linear relationship was observed between normal triglyceride levels and the incidence of T2DM. The hazard ratio for T2DM in individuals with normal triglycerides was 1.81 (95% confidence interval: 1.39, 2.36); P<0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis further demonstrated a prospective association between the higher tertiles of normal triglyceride levels and the development of T2DM (P<0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed a stronger positive correlation between normal triglyceride levels in females and the risk of T2DM. Discussion An increase in triglyceride levels within the normal range is related to a continuous increase in the incidence of T2DM in the general population. These findings show that almost everyone can benefit from reducing triglyceride levels, further emphasizing the importance of lifestyle changes in the general population.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a growing health concern with an estimated 462 million people having been diagnosed worldwide. T2D is characterized by chronically elevated blood glucose and insulin resistance, which culminate in a diminished function of the β-cell mass in its later stages. This can be perpetuated by and result in inflammation, excess reactive oxygen species production, obesity, and the dysregulation of multiple cellular pathways. Many naturally occurring small molecules have been investigated in terms of their roles in modulating glucose homeostasis and β-cell function. Many of these compounds can be found in commonly used sources of food and drink. Interestingly, a correlation has been observed between coffee consumption and T2D incidence. However, the specific compounds responsible for this correlation and their mechanisms are still somewhat undetermined. This paper reviews recent research findings on the effects of several polyphenols that are either found in coffee or are metabolites of compounds found in coffee (enterodiol, enterolactone, matairesinol, secoisolariciresinol, kaempferol, quercetin, and chlorogenic acid) on glucose homeostasis and health complications associated with glucose dysregulation, with a special emphasis on their potential anti-diabetic effects. The factors that affect polyphenol content in coffee are also addressed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate potential interactions between maternal smoking around birth (MSAB) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) pathway-specific genetic risks in relation to the development of T2D in offspring. Additionally, it seeks to determine whether and how nutritional factors during different life stages may modify the association between MSAB and risk of T2D. METHODS This study included 460,234 participants aged 40 to 69 years, who were initially free of T2D from the UK Biobank. MSAB and breastfeeding were collected by questionnaire. The Alternative health eating index(AHEI) and dietary inflammation index(DII) were calculated. The polygenic risk scores(PRS) of T2D and pathway-specific were established, including β-cell function, proinsulin, obesity, lipodystrophy, liver function and glycated haemoglobin(HbA1c). Cox proportion hazards models were performed to evaluate the gene/diet-MSAB interaction on T2D. The relative excess risk due to additive interaction (RERI) were calculated. RESULTS During a median follow-up period of 12.7 years, we identified 27,342 cases of incident T2D. After adjustment for potential confounders, participants exposed to MSAB had an increased risk of T2D (HR=1.11, 95%CI:1.08-1.14), and this association remained significant among the participants with breastfeeding (HR= HR=1.10, 95%CI: 1.06-1.14). Moreover, among the participants in the highest quartile of AHEI or in the lowest quartile of DII, the association between MSAB and the increased risk of T2D become non-significant (HR=0.94, 95%CI: 0.79-1.13 for AHEI; HR=1.09, 95%CI:0.99-1.20 for DII). Additionally, the association between MSAB and risk of T2D became non-significant among the participants with lower genetic risk of lipodystrophy (HR=1.06, 95%CI:0.99-1.14), and exposed to MSAB with a higher genetic risk for β-cell dysfunction or lipodystrophy additively elevated the risk of T2D(RERI=0.18, 95%CI:0.06-0.30 for β-cell function; RERI=0.16, 95%CI:0.04-0.28 for lipodystrophy). CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that maintaining a high dietary quality or lower dietary inflammation in diet may reduce the risk of T2D associated with MSAB, and the combination of higher genetic risk of β-cell dysfunction or lipodystrophy and MSAB significantly elevate the risk of T2D in offspring.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of individuals with prediabetes who developed type 2 diabetes despite undergoing interventions, and to evaluate the performance of urinary myo-inositol (UMI) as a noninvasive indicator for the risk of developing diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 51 individuals with prediabetes who underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, ΔUMI (the difference in the UMI : creatinine ratio between before and 120 min after 75-g glucose loading), fasting plasma glucose, insulin, hemoglobin A1c, noninvasive testing (age, body mass index, blood pressure) and general blood tests were measured at baseline, and underwent dietary/exercise guidance for 8 years were studied. RESULTS A total of 31 participants developed diabetes in 8 years. At baseline, the group that developed diabetes was characterized by high ΔUMI, hemoglobin A1c, fasting plasma glucose and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and insulinogenic index (I.I.). I.I and ΔUMI showed a higher correlation than fasting plasma glucose and hemoglobin A1c. Regarding diabetes onset within 8 years, Cox regression analysis of diabetes onset showed the baseline ΔUMI is an independent predictor, adjusted for the result of not only noninvasive markers, but also that of noninvasive and general blood markers. The log-rank test showed that all glycemic indicators were significantly associated with diabetes onset. CONCLUSION Participants who developed type 2 diabetes from prediabetes despite undergoing interventions were characterized by high glycemic control markers and low I.I. As noninvasive measurement of ΔUMI is associated with I.I. and diabetes onset, it could be a useful indicator for identifying individuals with a high risk of diabetes onset.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence has shown that early-life famine exposure and obesity in adulthood are independently associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, few studies had revealed the combined effect of these risk factors. METHODS Two sets of groups from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were selected. The fetal-exposure group born in 1959-1961 from 2011 wave (N = 958) and nonexposure group born in 1963-1965 from 2015 wave (N = 1540) were selected as Comparison 1. The early childhood-exposure group born in 1955-1957 from 2011 wave (N = 1510) and fetal-exposure group born in 1959-1961 from 2015 wave (N = 943) were Comparison 2. Logistic regressions were applied to examine the associations of different famine exposure periods and obesity patterns with T2DM risk. RESULTS Compared with nonexposed participants without central overweight/obesity in adulthood, central overweight/obesity in adulthood together with nonexposure (odds ratio [OR]: 1.89, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.19-3.00) or fetal-exposure (OR: 1.99, 95% CI: 1.23-3.23) was associated with higher risks of T2DM. Compared with the early childhood-exposure group, the fetal-exposed participants showed higher risks of T2DM (OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.02-1.66). The coexistence of fetal famine exposure and central overweight/obesity in adulthood was associated with higher risks of T2DM (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.19-2.79). Consistent associations were observed among males and participants from less severely affected areas. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, central overweight/obesity in adulthood is associated with the increased risk of T2DM, but the effect of early-life famine exposure is not very clear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Epidemiologic studies have examined the association between dietary fatty acids and type 2 diabetes risk in general populations. Evidence regarding their associations with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate prepregnancy fatty acids intake in relation to GDM risk. METHODS 3,725 pregnant women from the Xi'an Birth Cohort Study who were free of previous GDM or pre-existing chronic diseases were included. Dietary intake of total fat and individual fatty acids (including saturated fatty acids [SFA], monounsaturated fatty acids [MUFA], polyunsaturated fatty acids [PUFA], and trans fatty acids) during the year preceding pregnancy was assessed by a validated food-frequency questionnaire before 16 weeks of gestation. GDM was confirmed based on the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Log-binomial or modified Poisson regression models were applied to estimate the relative risks (RRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (95%CIs) of GDM for fatty acids intake. Generalized linear regression was adopted for blood glucose levels with fatty acids intake. RESULTS 644 (17.3 %) incident GDM cases were confirmed in our study. Participants in the highest intake of total fat substituting for carbohydrates had a 33 % reduced risk of GDM than those in the lowest intake (RR:0.67; 95%CI:0.55,0.81). For individual fatty acids, only PUFA intake was associated with a lower risk of GDM, with RR comparing extreme tertiles of 0.61 (95%CI:0.49,0.76). Each 2 % increase in energy from total fat and PUFA replacing carbohydrates decreased the risk of GDM by 6 % (95%CI:3 %,9 %) and 15 % (95%CI:9 %,21 %), respectively. Similar inverse associations with intake of total fat and PUFA were observed for blood glucose levels. Further analyses of SFA substitution showed that replacement of 2 % energy from SFA with PUFA and MUFA was associated with 26 % (RR:0.74; 95%CI:0.62,0.88) and 30 % (RR:0.70; 95%CI:0.50, 0.98) decreased risk of GDM, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Greater intake of total fat and PUFA before pregnancy was associated with lower risk of GDM when replacing carbohydrates. Substitution SFA with PUFA and MUFA was also inversely associated with GDM risk. These findings support the important role of optimal dietary fatty acids composition in the prevention of GDM.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery has become a recognized and effective procedure for treating obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Our objective was to directly compare the caloric intake-independent effects of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and single anastomosis duodenoileal bypass with SG (SADI-S) on glucose tolerance in rats with diet-induced obesity (DIO) and to elucidate the differences between bariatric surgery and caloric restriction.A total of 120 adult male Wistar rats with DIO and insulin resistance were randomly assigned to surgical (sham operation, SG, and SADI-S) and dietary (pair-feeding the amount of food eaten by animals undergoing the SG or SADI-S surgeries) interventions. Body weight and food intake were weekly monitored, and 6 weeks after interventions, fasting plasma glucose, oral glucose and insulin tolerance tests, plasma insulin, adiponectin, GIP, GLP-1, and ghrelin levels were determined.The body weight of SADI-S rats was significantly (p < 0.001) lower as compared to the sham-operated, SG, and pair-fed groups. Furthermore, SADI-S rats exhibited decreased whole body fat mass (p < 0.001), lower food efficiency rates (p < 0.001), and increased insulin sensitivity, as well as improved glucose and lipid metabolism compared to that of the SG and pair-fed rats.SADI-S was more effective than SG, or caloric restriction, in improving glycemic control and metabolic profile, with a higher remission of insulin resistance as well as long-term weight loss.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to examine whether cumulative exposure to hypertriglyceridemia is associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in young adults. METHODS The study included 1,840,251 participants aged 20-39 years who had undergonefourconsecutiveannualhealth checkups and had no history of type 2 diabetes. Participants werecategorized into five groups (exposure score 0-4) based on the frequencies of hypertriglyceridemia diagnosis over a four-year period. The primary outcome was newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Exploratory analyses were performed for the different subgroups. RESULTS During a follow-up period of 6.53 years, 40,286 participants developed type 2 diabetes. The cumulative incidence of type 2 diabetes significantly increased with higher exposure scores for hypertriglyceridemia (log-rank test, P < 0.001). The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios for incident diabetes were 1.674 (95 % CI, 1.619, 1.732), 2.192 (95 % CI, 2.117, 2.269), 2.637 (95 % CI, 2.548, 2.73), and 3.715 (95 % CI, 3.6, 3.834) for participants with scores of 1-4, respectively, compared with those with an exposure score of 0. CONCLUSIONS In this large-scale prospective cohort study of young adults, cumulative exposure to hypertriglyceridemia was significantly associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, independent of lifestyle-related factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite numerous observational studies, the causal relationship between obesity-measured by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)-as well as type 2 diabetes (T2D), lifestyle habits, and susceptibility to low back pain (LBP) remains obscure. METHODS This investigation employed two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore causality, using genetic variants linked to relevant factors from genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Specifically, we selected independent genetic variants related to BMI, WC, T2D, smoking, alcohol consumption, and coffee intake from established GWASs, all of which demonstrated genome-wide significance. The comparative data for LBP were derived from a GWAS involving European subjects, under the auspices of the renowned MRC-IEU (Medical Research Council Integrative Epidemiology Unit) consortium. RESULTS Elevated BMI and WC were associated with odds ratios of 1.002 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.001-1.004, p < 0.001) and 1.003 (95% CI = 1.002-1.004, p < 0.001) for LBP per standard deviation (SD) increase, respectively. Regarding smoking initiation and coffee consumption, the odds ratios stood at 1.002 (95% CI = 1.001-1.004, p = 0.001) and 1.004 (95% CI = 1.001-1.008, p = 0.034) for LBP, respectively. However, an augmented log odds ratio for T2D and each SD rise in alcohol consumption frequency revealed no significant causal impact on LBP risk. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate a potential causal link between obesity, smoking, and coffee intake in the genesis of LBP, suggesting that mitigating these factors could contribute to LBP prevention.

Abstract
This study aimed to prospectively explore the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake (FVI) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk amongst 13,175 Chinese adults. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) of T2D events in relation to FVI. Results showed that the highest quintile of FVI was inversely associated with T2D risk in men (HR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.50, 0.98) and women (HR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.55, 0.97), whereas no such associations were observed between total vegetable intake and T2D in either men (HR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.65, 1.26) or women (HR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.77, 1.38). In addition, greater fruit intake was inversely associated with T2D risk in men (HR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.28, 0.63) and women (HR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.45, 0.90). Overall, FVI and total fruit intake were inversely associated with T2D risk amongst Chinese adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE People living with diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease can have difficulty attending multiple appointments to receive DM care. We developed and studied the utility of a DM outreach program to offer in the hemodialysis (HD) unit. METHODS We conducted a quality improvement project in a satellite HD unit in London, Ontario, Canada, between August 1, 2019, and July 31, 2022. We assessed for baseline gaps in DM care among those with DM, performed root-cause analysis with key stakeholders to identify critical drivers of gaps, and conceptualized a certified diabetes educator-led outreach program to offer in the HD unit. We aimed to improve DM self-monitoring, hypo- and hyperglycemia, and DM-related screening. We used run and control charts to track outcome measures over time and modified our outreach program iteratively. RESULTS Fifty-eight persons with DM receiving HD participated in our program. Support spanned multiple waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. With 4 tests of change, we observed improvement in DM self-monitoring with a modest decline in self-reported hyperglycemia. There were no adverse consequences, and satisfaction with our program was high. CONCLUSIONS Although we did not meet all measures of success during the pandemic, outreach DM support in the HD unit appeared to improve self-monitoring and self-reported hyperglycemia. Similar programs could be modified and implemented in other centres.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Although the significance of diet in preventing or managing diabetes complications is highlighted in current literature, there is insufficient evidence regarding the correlation between nutrient patterns and these complications. The objective of this case-control study is to investigate this relationship by analyzing the dietary intake of nutrients in participants with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS A case-control study was conducted at the Tabriz Center of Metabolism and Endocrinology to investigate the relationship between nutrient patterns and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The study enrolled 225 newly diagnosed cases of T2D and 225 controls. The dietary intake of nutrients was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Principal component analysis using Varimax rotation was used to obtain nutrient patterns. Logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the risk of T2D. RESULTS The participants' mean (SD) age and BMI were 39.8 (8.8) years and 27.8 (3.6) kg/m2, respectively. The results identified three major nutrient patterns. The first nutrient pattern was characterized by high consumption of sucrose, animal protein, vitamin E, vitamin B1, vitamin B12, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and potassium. The second nutrient pattern included fiber, plant protein, vitamin D, Riboflavin, Vitamin B5, copper, and Magnesium. The third nutrient pattern was characterized by fiber, plant protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. Individuals in the highest tertile of nutrient pattern 3 (NP3) had a lower risk of T2D compared to those in the lowest tertile after adjusting for confounders. The odds ratio was 0.52 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.30-0.89 and a P_trend of 0.039. CONCLUSION This study found that conforming to a nutrient pattern consisting of plant protein, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B2, potassium, and calcium is linked to a lower likelihood of developing T2D.The initial results suggest that following a nutrient pattern that includes these nutrients may reduce the risk of T2D. However, further research is required to confirm the relationship between nutrient patterns and T2D.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes (GDM) changes the maternal metabolic and uterine environment, thus increasing the risk of short- and long-term adverse outcomes for both mother and child. Children of mothers who have GDM during their pregnancy are more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), early-onset cardiovascular disease and GDM when they themselves become pregnant, perpetuating a multigenerational increased risk of metabolic disease. The negative effect of GDM is exacerbated by maternal obesity, which induces a greater derangement of fetal adipogenesis and growth. Multiple factors, including genetic, epigenetic and metabolic, which interact with lifestyle factors and the environment, are likely to contribute to the development of GDM. Genetic factors are particularly important, with 30% of women with GDM having at least one parent with T2D. Fetal epigenetic modifications occur in response to maternal GDM, and may mediate both multi- and transgenerational risk. Changes to the maternal metabolome in GDM are primarily related to fatty acid oxidation, inflammation and insulin resistance. These might be effective early biomarkers allowing the identification of women at risk of GDM prior to the development of hyperglycaemia. The impact of the intra-uterine environment on the developing fetus, "developmental programming", has a multisystem effect, but its influence on adipogenesis is particularly important as it will determine baseline insulin sensitivity, and the response to future metabolic challenges. Identifying the critical window of metabolic development and developing effective interventions are key to our ability to improve population metabolic health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common chronic disease that disproportionally affects disadvantaged groups. People with a low socioeconomic position (SEP) have increased risk of T2DM and people with a low SEP and T2DM have higher HbA1c-levels compared to people with T2DM and high SEP. The aim of this study is to analyze longitudinal socioeconomic differences in health-related functioning in people with T2DM. METHODS Longitudinal data from 1,537 participants of The Maastricht Study with T2DM were used (32.6% female, mean (SD) age 62.9 (7.7) years). SEP was determined by baseline measures of education, occupation and income. Health-related functioning (physical, mental and social) was measured with the Short-Form Health Survey and the Impact on Participation and Autonomy survey (all scored from 0 to 100). Associations of SEP and health-related functioning were studied annually over a 10-year period (median (IQR) 7.0 (5.0) years, baseline 2010-2018) using linear mixed methods adjusting for demographics, HbA1c-levels and lifestyle factors. RESULTS Participants with a low SEP had significantly worse health-related functioning compared to those with a high SEP. For example, participants with low income had lower scores for physical (-4.49[CI -5.77;-3.21]), mental (-2.61[-3.78,-1.44]) and social functioning (-9.76[-12.30;-7.23]) compared to participants with high income on a scale from 0 to 100. In addition, participants with a low education significantly declined more over time in mental (score for interaction education with time - 0.23[-0.37;-0.09]) and social functioning (-0.44[-0.77;-0.11]) compared to participants with high education. Participants with low and intermediate incomes significantly declined more over time in physical functioning (-0.17 [-0.34, -0.01 and - 0.18 [-0.36, 0.00]) compared to participants with high income. CONCLUSIONS Among people with T2DM, those with a lower SEP had worse health-related functioning in general than people with a higher SEP. Additionally, people with T2DM and low education developed poorer mental and social functioning over time compared to people with T2DM and high education. People with T2DM and low or intermediate income declined more in physical functioning over time than those with high incomes. In addition to HbA1c-levels and lifestyle patterns, more attention is needed for socioeconomic differences in health-related functioning for people living with T2DM.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Many studies using metabolomics have tried to unravel the metabolic signature of obesity and understand the pathophysiology of this complex and heterogeneous disease. Circulating levels of the amino acid glutamate have been consistently associated with obesity and more specifically with measurements of abdominal fat accumulation. The purpose of this narrative review is to highlight recent studies documenting this association. RECENT FINDINGS Circulating glutamate concentrations have been positively correlated with measurements of central fat accumulation such as waist circumference and visceral adipose tissue area. Moreover, elevated glutamate levels have been linked to a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The association with adiposity is detected in early life, and genetic predisposition does not appear as a major driver. Glutamate levels reflect in vivo synthesis rather than dietary intake. However, interventions generating metabolic improvements such as incretin receptor agonist treatment or dietary improvements may reduce plasma levels of this amino acid. SUMMARY Recent findings confirm the consistent association between circulating glutamate and abdominal obesity and its cardiometabolic complications. The pathophysiological pathways underlying this phenomenon are still unclear. Furthermore, studies are needed to establish the usefulness of this analyte as a biomarker of abdominal obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When specific nutrients are inadequate, vulnerability to cardiovascular and metabolic illnesses increases. The data linking dietary nutrition with these illnesses, however, has been sparse in the past observational research and randomized controlled trials. OBJECTIVES A Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to assess the influence of macronutrients (fat, protein, sugar, and carbohydrates) and micronutrients (β-carotene, folate, calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B, and vitamin B12) on the susceptibility to cardiovascular metabolic disorders, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, ischemic stroke, and type 2 diabetes. METHODS We employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, utilizing inverse variance weighting and conducting comprehensive sensitivity assessments. We obtained publicly accessible summary data from separate cohorts comprising individuals of European ancestry. The level of statistical significance was established at a threshold of P < 0. 00074. RESULTS Based on our research findings, we have established a causal association between the consumption of circulating fat and the development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The study found that an increase of one standard deviation in fat consumption was associated with a decreased risk of heart failure, with an odds ratio of 0. 56 (95 % CI: 0. 40-0. 79; p = 0. 0007). Notably, various sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of this association. Conversely, we did not find any significant correlation between other dietary components and the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. CONCLUSION Our research findings demonstrate a conspicuous impact of dietary fat consumption on the susceptibility to heart failure, independent of coronary artery disease, diabetes, and stroke. Consequently, it is indicated that dietary factors are unrelated to the predisposition to cardiovascular metabolic disorders.

Abstract
SCOPE To identify metabolites associated with habitual dairy consumption and investigate their associations with type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk. METHODS AND RESULTS Metabolomics assays were conducted in the Fenland (n = 10,281) and EPIC-Norfolk (n = 1,440) studies. Using 82 metabolites assessed in both studies, we developed metabolite scores to classify self-reported consumption of milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, and total dairy (Fenland Study-discovery set; n = 6035). Internal and external validity of the scores was evaluated (Fenland-validation set, n = 4246; EPIC-Norfolk, n = 1440). The study assessed associations between each metabolite score and T2D incidence in EPIC-Norfolk (n = 641 cases; 16,350 person-years). The scores classified low and high consumers for all dairy types with internal validity, and milk, butter, and total dairy with external validity. The scores were further associated with lower incident T2D: hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) per standard deviation: milk 0.71 (0.65, 0.77); butter 0.62 (0.57, 0.68); total dairy 0.66 (0.60, 0.72). These associations persisted after adjustment for known dairy-fat biomarkers. CONCLUSION Metabolite scores identified habitual consumers of milk, butter, and total dairy products, and were associated with lower T2D risk. These findings hold promise for identifying objective indicators of the physiological response to dairy consumption.

Abstract
AIM Obesity is a worldwide health issue, associated with development of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of consumption of two hypercaloric diets on metabolic disturbance and beta cells damage. MAIN METHODS Male Wistar rats were subjected to twelve months consumption of three diets: a Control balanced diet (CTD, carbohydrates 58 %, proteins 29 %, lipids 13 %) and two hypercaloric diets, high in sucrose (HSD, carbohydrates 68 %, proteins 22 %, lipids 10 %) or high in fat (HFD, carbohydrates 31 %, proteins 14 %, lipids 55 %). Serum levels of glucose, triglycerides and free fatty acids were measured after zoometric parameters determination. Antioxidant enzymes activity and oxidative stress-marker were measured in pancreas tissue among histological analysis of Langerhans islets. KEY FINDINGS Although diets were hypercaloric, the amount of food consumed by rats decreased, resulting in an equal caloric consumption. The HSD induced hypertriglyceridemia and hyperglycemia with higher levels in free fatty acids (FFA, lipotoxicity); whereas HFD did not increased neither the triglycerides nor FFA, nevertheless the loss of islets' cell was larger. Both diets induced obesity with hyperglycemia and significant reduction in Langerhans islets size. SIGNIFICANCE Our results demonstrate that consumption of HSD induces more significant metabolic disturbances that HFD, although both generated pancreas damage; as well hypercaloric diet consumption is not indispensable to becoming obese; the chronic consumption of unbalanced diets (rich in carbohydrates or lipids) may lead to abdominal obesity with metabolic and functional disturbances, although the total amount of calories are similar.

Abstract
This study discusses the relationship between Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and diabetes in women, which has become increasingly prevalent due to changing lifestyles and environmental factors. The characteristic that distinguishes women with PCOS is hyperandrogenism which results from abnormal ovarian or adrenal function, which leads to the overproduction of androgens. Excessive androgens in women increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and insulin resistance (IR). Nowadays, diabetes affects people of all ages and is linked to factors such as lifestyle, genetics, stress, and aging. Diabetes, the uncontrolled high blood sugar level can potentially harm kidneys, nerves, eyes, and other organs and there is no cure, making it a concerning disease in developing nations. This research tried to submit the evidence through feature-wise correlation analyses between PCOS and diabetes. Hence, this model utilized the Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and the Elbow clustering algorithms for the experimental purpose in which the EDA deeply analyzed the features of PCOS and diabetes and recorded a positive correlation of 95%. The Elbow clustering technique is employed for verifying the correlations identified through EDA. Although limited research exists on this specific disease, this work provides potential evidence for the research community by evaluating the clustering results using Silhouette Score, Calinski-Harabasz Index, and Davies-Bouldin Index.

Abstract
AIMS To assess the long-term risk of developing type 2 diabetes in patients with obesity who have undergone gastric bypass surgery compared to non-operated patients with obesity and the general population. METHODS This study included 71,495 patients aged 20-65 years with a principal diagnosis of obesity in the Swedish Patient Register in 2001-2013. Of these, 23,099 had undergone gastric bypass and 32,435 had not. Each patient was matched by age, sex and geographic region with two controls from the general population without obesity diagnosis, i.e., 44,735 controls for the gastric bypass cohort and 62,522 controls for the non-operated cohort with obesity. Operated and non-operated patients with obesity were also directly compared using Cox regression analysis, providing hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusted for age, education, and sex. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 4.3 years (interquartile range [IQR] 2.4, 7.0 years), 3792 (11.7%) non-operated patients with obesity developed type 2 diabetes (incidence rate 22.8/1000 person-years, 95% CI 22.1-23.6) compared to 394 (1.7%) among gastric bypass patients (incidence rate 4.0/1000 person-years, 95% CI 3.6-4.5). The latter incidence was comparable to population controls (3.5/1000 person-years, 95% CI 3.2-3.8). Gastric bypass patients had 85% lower risk of diabetes compared to non-operated patients with obesity during the first six years of follow-up (HR 0.15; 95% CI 0.13-0.17). CONCLUSION Gastric bypass surgery for obesity seems to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes to levels similar to that of the general population during the first six years of follow-up but not thereafter.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies from the United States and European countries reported a positive association between ultra-processed food intake and diabetes risk. However, little is known about the association in Asian populations. It is also unknown about the individual ultra-processed food items that are most unfavorably associated with diabetes risk. OBJECTIVE We examined the associations of ultra-processed food intake (combined, as well as individual ultra-processed food items) with the risk of type 2 diabetes. METHODS This prospective analysis included 7438 participants aged 40-69 y from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study Ansan-Ansung cohort. Dietary intake was assessed at baseline using a 103-item semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Ultra-processed foods were classified using the Nova definition. Incident type 2 diabetes cases were identified via follow-up interviews and health examination. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS During the follow-up (2001-2019; median: 15 y), a total of 1187 type 2 diabetes cases were identified. Compared with the lowest quartile of ultra-processed food intake, the highest quartile was positively associated with diabetes risk [HR (95% CI) = 1.34 (1.13, 1.59), P-trend = 0.002]. The association did not change after additional adjustment for diet quality or BMI. Among individual ultra-processed food items, a higher consumption of ham/sausage [per 1% increase in the weight ratio: HR (95% CI) = 1.40 (1.05, 1.86)], instant noodles [1.07 (1.02, 1.11)], ice cream [1.08 (1.03, 1.13)], and carbonated beverages [1.02 (1.00, 1.04)] were associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas a higher intake of candy/chocolate was associated with a decreased risk [0.78 (0.62, 0.99)]. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that the high intake of ultra-processed foods, particularly ham/sausage, instant noodles, ice cream, and carbonated beverages, is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in Korean adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-based diets are becoming increasingly popular due to favourable environmental footprints and have been associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Here, we investigated the potential mechanisms to explain the lower T2DM risk observed among individuals following plant-based diets. METHODS Prospective data from the UK Biobank, a cohort study of participants aged 40 to 69 years at baseline, was evaluated. Associations between healthful and unhealthful plant-based indices (hPDI and uPDI) and T2DM risk were analysed by multivariable Cox regression models, followed by causal mediation analyses to investigate which cardiometabolic risk factors explained the observed associations. RESULTS Of 113,097 study participants 2,628 developed T2DM over 12 years of follow-up. Participants with the highest hPDI scores (Quartile 4) had a 24 % lower T2DM risk compared to those with the lowest scores (Quartile 1) [Hazard Ratio (HR): 0.76, 95 % Confidence Interval (CI): 0.68-0.85]. This association was mediated by a lower BMI (proportion mediated: 28 %), lower waist circumference (28 %), and lower concentrations of HBA1c (11 %), triglycerides (9 %), alanine aminotransferase (5 %), gamma glutamyl transferase (4 %), C-reactive protein (4 %), insulin-like growth factor 1 (4 %), cystatin C (4 %) and urate (4 %). Higher uPDI scores were associated with a 37 % higher T2DM risk [HR: 1.37, 95 % CI:1.22- 1.53], with higher waist circumference (proportion mediated: 17 %), BMI (7 %), and higher concentrations of triglycerides (13 %) potentially playing mediating roles. CONCLUSION Healthful plant-based diets may protect against T2DM via lower body fatness, but also via normoglycaemia, lower basal inflammation as well as improved kidney and liver function.
